Taking a stand against hate Eastern Victoria MP Harriet Shing has called out “abhorrent acts of hate” seen on the steps of Victorian Parliament over the weekend. It comes after National Socialist Movement members repeatedly performed the Nazi salute on the steps of the Victorian parliament on Saturday at an anti-transgender rights rally. Ms Shing, who also serves as Equality Minister, said the events caused a lot of trauma and hurt to members of the LGBTIQ+ community. “Trans-Victorians have a really hard time of it. They experience stigma and discrimination every day in countless ways,” she said. STORY PAGE 3

The State Government has vowed not to demolish the old Beaconsfield railway house. The announcement was made on Thursday 16 March, after questions by the Gazette to Premier Daniel Andrews about the government’s plans for the property. The Old Beaconsfield Railway House property is set to be acquired by the government as part of level crossing removal works. However, there was community concern the house would be demolished. Earlier this year, the government said it was “working through how aspects of the building may be retained”. STORY PAGE 5
Restoring tribute By Corey Everitt Two Bunyip locals are doing the valiant job of restoring the memorial of a tragedy that rocked the community 55 years ago. The memorial stands at Bunyip Football Club and commemorates five local men who
tragically died in a light aircraft accident in 1967. All men were well known in Bunyip and madly part of the local football club. The tragedy is still remembered today, inspiring life members of the Bunyip Football
Club, Dave Papley and Peter Dowie, to restore the memorial and show the respect the community still has for it. Dave and Peter have organised an event to open the restored memorial that will include a member of each of the five men’s families
planting a rose around the memorial. Their hope is that the restoration will carry on the respect to others and future generations as time goes by for both the families and the town of Bunyip. STORY PAGE 3
