Cop hits heights A Detective Leading Senior Constable at Victoria Police’s major collision unit, Leigh Miller understands how PTSD - and mental health issues - can impact former members of the police force. “One day I go to a collision and it bothers me, and then when I retire or I leave the job and I’m walking down the street and I see something and it’s a flashback to that memory, and all of a sudden I’m a mess and I need help and I don’t know where to go, it can be just one incident which puts you over and just makes you suffer,“ Constable Miller said. By doing something he loves, Constable Miller raised money for Police Veterans Victoria by riding a 1.5 kilometre stretch of Kallista-Emerald Road on Saturday 11 March, reaching a vertical gain of 9,036 metres1; higher than Mount Everest. In the process, he raised almost $10,000; supporting an organisation that provides counselling and services to police veterans and their families. Turn to page 2 for more on the story

Trek for poverty Oxfam’s Trailwalker has run in Australia for 24 years, with participants raising more than $98.5 million to challenge poverty. This year, the trail for thousands of participants will begin at Puffing Billy Railway Station in Gembrook on Friday 24 March, with people given 40 hours to journey through a 100 kilometre, 50 kilometre or 30 kilometre bush trail. Father-daughter pair from The Patch, War-
ren and Ebony Miller, will be trekking 100 kilometres in a group of six, passing by stops including SkyHigh Mount Dandenong, before finishing their walk at Lysterfield Lake on Sunday 26 March. “It is a bit daunting knowing that we’re going to be covering such distance with little to no sleep and very short breaks, but I think we’ll be all right; if dad can do it, I can do it,” Ebony said.
So far, the group, named ‘Legends and Apprentices,’ has raised $2,384 through donations. “It’s been really good. We’ve done the Melbourne ones, and then there’s Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and we’ve done some in New Zealand as well,” Warren added. Another group, made up of Kathryn Eames from Sassafras, Judy Friguglietti from Menzies Creek and Katerina Volny from Upwey, joined
Sue Filmer from Lara for the New Zealand Oxfam Trailwalk at New Plymouth on the North Island earlier this month. “We started in the dark at 6am Saturday and walked through the night to finish at 6.05am on Sunday, achieving our goal of 100km in 24 hours with the help of our excellent support crew,” Judy said.
