By Tyler Wright Disruptions on the Belgrave line are already increasing travel times for commuters, with buses are set to replace trains between Camberwell and Box Hill stations until late May 2023.

Monbulk resident Marjorie Hau travels into the city twice a week to work as a teacher, and said fewer trains and bus delays have left her with a three hour long commute.

“I’ve always used the line, and when the disruptions were happening I heard about the express bus and I thought ‘oh, look, it might be an extra half an hour, and I’ll just take an early everything and I should be fine,’” Ms Hau said.

“It takes me an hour and a half, so it’s double the time, which is not what I expected; and the main problem has been the fact that there were fewer trains running from Belgrave in the morning and also the fact that the buses in the hills are consistently late.”

Ms Hau decided to try an alternative route; taking a bus to Oakleigh and catching the train on the uninterrupted line; leaving her home at 5.50am and arriving at work at 8.30am.

“It’s becoming like the weather. We talk about train problems and delays and frustration shared,” she said.

“It shouldn’t be like this.”

On her commute into Parkville from Mount Dandenong, Samantha Corbin said Monday and Friday commutes are smooth, with traffic volumes “progressively worse” on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

New round of cash Local residents will be able to claim another round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus in late March, even if they have previously received the payment last year.

From 24 March, all eligible Victorian households will be able to claim the payment when they visit the Victorian Energy Compare website.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the government knows Victorians are doing it tough with the rising cost of energy.

“That’s why we’ll have a new round of the $250 Power Saving Bonus, putting money in families’ pockets and making sure they’re on the best deal,” he said.

“We’re driving down bills and putting power back in Victorians’ hands by bringing back the SEC and delivering cheap, clean, sustainable energy.”

Applications for the payment are made through the website, which also offers people the ability to compare energy offers in their area.

More than 1.7 million homes have claimed the bonus since the first round launched in July 2022.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the discovery of a man’s body in Lysterfield on Saturday 4 March.

The body was found after emergency services responded to reports that a man had gone missing in water off Logan Park Road.

The man, believed to have been using a paddle board, was last seen in the water by passers-by just after 2.30pm. After a search of the lake was conducted with the assistance of Air Wing, divers from Search and Rescue, Water Police and SES, the 38-year-old Clayton man was located deceased just before 9pm.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Council lauds fine advice

The Disability Advisory Committee for 2022-2026. were involved in external advocacy such as the Eastern Community Legal Centre’s Hidden Voices project or the Art and Sole project.

A report on the achievements of Yarra Ranges Council’s Disability Advisory Committee (DAC) was tabled at the Tuesday 28 February Council meeting, receiving plaudits and appreciation from councillors.

The DAC is made up of community members with a disability, service providers and community organisations for people with a disability and unpaid carers of people with a disability. A fantastic example is legally blind Wesburn resident Marie Pleuger whose struggles have been covered in the Star Mail, who applied and was appointed as part of the DAC’s 2022 intake.

The DAC is chaired by Walling Ward Councillor Len Cox OAM who has been involved with the committee since its inception in 2014 and he said the new committee appointed in 2022 are very keen and anxious to try to improve the life of so many people with a disability.

“It gives a good cross-section of the issues of disability and the committee clearly understands the difficulties and the problems that people with a disability do suffer from. Council has changed the way it does a lot of things in the community, because of the advice that’s been given to them by this committee,” he said.

“So many of these people also spend their life caring for somebody with a disability, which let’s face it, it’s a lot of work and is very difficult for some of them.”

In the last year, the DAC has provided input into council plans and strategies such as the 10-year Economic Development Strategy, Monbulk Urban Design Framework and Warburton Place Plan, been consulted on four accessible play spaces that opened in the last year, advised on recreation space upgrades such as at the new Coldstream Pump Track and at the Belgrave South Netball Club and

Yarra Ranges Council is seeking input from the community on how they use their local pools and water parks, and what aquatic services they might need in the future.

Feedback from the survey will help inform the council’s draft Aquatic Strategy, which is due to come out later this year and will feature another round of community consultation.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Jim Child, said the council recognised its aquatic services played an important role in the health and wellbeing of the community.

“Our facilities have come a long way over the years. We’ve gone from diving boards and outdoor baths to now having some modern indoor pools and water parks, but we need to continue to evolve these in line with the community’s needs,” Cr Child said.

“What this survey will do is help us better understand the current and future needs of our community when it comes to our aquatics services.

“The feedback we receive on our services will also help us determine how they add to the health and wellbeing of our community.

“This feedback will then be combined with the environmental and financial impacts of how we maintain our facilities which will all feed into the upcoming draft Aquatic Strategy.

“This is just step one of a multi-staged approach towards creating an Aquatic Strategy, so I really encourage every resident to take part in this survey to give us the strongest data possible.”

Yarra Ranges residents have until Wednesday, 26 April to complete the survey.

There will also be multiple opportunities for community members to have a chat with Council staff about aquatics and the survey at upcoming drop-in sessions.

Knox ends year in the red “All in all, this is predominantly an administrative report out on how we’re tracking and as you’ll read as you go through it,” she said.

“It’s a pretty comfortable report.”

Of the 51 initiatives included in the 2022/23 council plan, five have been completed and 41 are on schedule.

The report states the overall financial position was “satisfactory,” with the council seeing a $700,000 increase in supplementary rates income, a $600,000 reduction in child care parent fees and $900,000 in gran income “due to lower utilisation and kindergarten being offered to families for free in 2023,” and a $700,000 decrease in traffic enforcement fines due to delays in the council’s parking strategy being implemented.

For the financial year, the council is forecasting revenue to reduce by $1.5 million and expenditure to decrease by $3.4 million compared to the amended budget.

The quarterly performance report, prepared by the council finance operations and business intelligence staff, covers the last three months of 2022.

Cr Nicole Seymour said it is well worth the community having a look at the report to see how the council is progressing.

“The bottom line of the report though is that tells us that we are in a sustainable position. Although we’re still walking a very fine edge,” she said.

“It’s not an easy landscape for us financially going forward, which is a constant theme that we’ve been having meeting after meeting and this report, which is at the end of December,

Knox City Council’s cash and financial assets were $13.473 million as of 31 December 2022.

Community panel recruited for ‘next stage’ of kinders

By Parker McKenzie A community panel will support Knox City Council as it considers the future of its kindergarten services in the local area, after councillors voted on a report offering three options at a meeting on Monday 27 February.

At the meeting, Cr David Pearce said the purpose of the report is for the council to approve the next phase of the kindergarten services review in an open and transparent manner.

“There are three options going up to the community: One, remaining a sessional

kindergarten provider in a more sustainable service model, options two to remain a provider only with the two early years hubs, and option three exit the services altogether,” he said.

“The option of status quo as we are is not in this report and the reason for that is that we’ve had already begun the path of doing some rationalisation of service facilities that are underutilized dramatically.”

Cr Pearce said the Victorian Government is providing a subsidy of $2500 per child to service providers and there is no discretion on fees charged, so operators must try to

run a financially viable service within those parameters.

The three options in the report would be a choice between reducing the number of sites where it offers kindergarten and increasing to 15 hours a week for all three and four-yearolds, providing sessional kindergarten only at the Knox Children and Family Centres in Bayswater and Wantirna South and no longer providing any sessional kindergarten services.

Cr Yvonne Allred said the introduction of two-year-old kindergarten funding was the largest reform of the early years sector.

“Council needs to consider the best way

to support the state government’s changes whilst remaining sustainable and delivering the best value for our community,” she said.

“To do this we’re consulting with the community through what’s called the Community panel. I’m comfortable with the three options found in tonight’s report that will be considered and assessed by the community panel in coming months.”

An independent consultant recruited a “demographically representative community panel to provide input to Council.”

Independent in Aston poll

By Parker McKenzie Maya Tesa is running as an independent candidate in the Aston by-election on a libertarian platform of lower taxes and less government oversight.

The Eltham-based business owner said she decided to nominate as a candidate because she didn’t see anyone she would vote for.

“Libertarianism means living your life the way you want, without causing harm,” she said.

“We believe in free markets and small government.”

Ms Tesa, who was born in Lebanon but grew up in Victoria, previously ran in the 2022 state election as a Liberal Democrats candidate in

the Upper House and received 4.16 per cent of the first preference votes She said she wants to reduce the amount of taxes being taken out of everyone’s purse and let people live their lives.

“Right now, we can’t turn around or move without the government being in our lives.”

Policies listed on her website include lower taxes, education reform, reducing the cost of living, affordable and reliable energy, voluntary superannuation contributions and legalising cannabis.

Ms Tesa said Australia is currently nearly one trillion dollars in debt and something needs to change.

“We know most of that is coming from unwanted and unneeded government bureaucracy,” she said.

“An electorate like Aston is highly diverse, and a lot of people come to Australia to get an opportunity and the government is offering them handouts instead of a hand up.”

She said as a mother of four, she has always been involved in the local community.

The Aston by-election will be held on Saturday 1 April. The Aston electorate covers Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Knoxfield, Rowville, Scoresby, The Basin, Wantirna and Wantirna South, and parts of Lysterfield, Sassafras and Upper Ferntree Gully.

Peter Dutton attacks Labor on infrastructure cuts

By Parker McKenzie Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has continued to attack the Labor government on cuts to funding in the Aston electorate ahead of the by-election, downplaying that only a portion of the project’s total cost had been committed by the previous Coalition government.

During a visit to a local business on Thursday 2 March, Mr Dutton said the government’s decision to “rip funding out of Aston, out of important infrastructure projects,” was made during the October 2022 budget.

“There’s a budget coming up in May and you note Catherine King yesterday, the minister confirmed that the Government will not even consider putting funds into infrastructure projects,” he said.

“That spending profile is no different to many other infrastructure projects. The claim is complete nonsense.”

On Friday 17 February, Prime Minister An-

thony Albanese, when asked by the Star Mail during a visit to Bayswater to announce Mary Doyle as Labor’s candidate for the by-election, said the funding was only a small portion of what was required to complete the projects.

“Alan Tudge committed to spending $50 million to upgrade Napoleon Road but the costing was more than $220 million more than he offered. He committed to the Dorset Road extension, which would have needed more than $120 million than they proposed to spend,” Mr Albanese said.

“The Wellington Road duplication where they offered $110 million would have needed six times more — $640 million — to actually deliver it, so these were just fake promises done in an election.”

Mr Dutton said the by-election is about a choice that the people of Aston have to make about “the sort of local champion that they want for their local area.”

“Roshena has demonstrated in her work as a counsellor, in her work as a solicitor and barrister, in her work as a mum of three children, the ability to balance and to juggle all of that and to achieve significant outcomes for the local community,” he said.

Ms Campbell said her move to the electorate was “underway,” and she has heard from the community that former member for Aston Alan Tudge delivered support for community groups and she would like to continue this.

“I’m going to use my experience as a counsellor, listening to the community, and as a barrister, fighting for people,” she said.

The Aston by-election will be held on Saturday 1 April.

The electorate covers Bayswater, Boronia, Ferntree Gully, Knoxfield, Rowville, Scoresby, The Basin, Wantirna and Wantirna South, and parts of Lysterfield, Sassafras and Upper Ferntree Gully.

Queensland fruit fly alert

By Tyler Wright A local organisation is working to mitigate the impact of the Queensland fruit fly after seven flies were detected in Silvan in February.

Regional fruit fly project coordinator at Agribusiness Yarra Valley, Bronwyn Koll, alerted the public through social media and urged landowners and fruit growers in both central Silvan and the Mount Evelyn side of Silvan to work through their emergency response plan for the insect, which uses crops as a breeding ground.

“The detections are showing up in places where the the Queensland Fruit Fly Awareness Project has surveillance traps in place, so we’re catching these fruit flies and then we’re immediately contacting those that are nearby and asking them for their cooperation in investigating further to look at their practises, and those who have the ability to do so have been applying fruit fly bait,” Ms Koll said.

Landowners are encouraged to use nets to keep the fly away from ripening fruit and remove or destroy collected fruit waste by boiling or freezing their produce.

“The number one message for the non fruit growing areas or for the non fruit producing backyards is to get rid of the wild blackberry,” Ms Koll said.

“I believe that our biggest influx of fruit fly detections usually is close to the ripening period of our wild blackberries.

“The areas with uncontrolled blackberries that are in fruit right now are potentially hosting Queensland fruit fly.”

There are over 100 different host fruits for the Queensland fruit fly, including all tree fruit and lower ground crops like strawberries, capsicums and tomatoes.

Ms Koll said prior to 2018 there was no detection of Queensland fruit fly in the Yarra Valley, with some discovered since in Belgrave, Cockatoo, Yarra Glen, Healesvilee, Coldstream and Woori Yallock and Hoddles Creek, right through to Melbourne peri-urban areas including Warrandyte and Park Orchards and further towards the city.

Ms Koll said it is hard to pin point the reason for their migration to the area.

“Fruit fly generally move from region to region, either in fruit that people carry or they migrate from one town or one region to the next over time if they’re left unaddressed,” Ms Koll said.

“Because the fruit fly larvae are inside the fruit and there’s very little damage on the outside of the fruit, it’s really hard to tell whether something’s damaged or infested or not, because you don’t find out until you actually open the fruit up.”

There are currently over 200 fruit fly traps in the Yarra Valley, Ms Koll said, with Agribusiness Yarra Valley deploying extra traps with funding from Agriculture Victoria and the cooperation

“It’s all about early detection, rapid response, and then we provide free support to anyone that is affected,” she said.

In an online statement, Yarra Ranges Council said it has also undertaken measures to control the spread of Queensland fruit fly including trapping and the removal of fruit trees on public land that are susceptible to infestation.

“Following a confirmed detection of Queensland Fruit Fly, Agribusiness Yarra Valley requested that we assess nearby fruit trees on public land, which may be susceptible to infestation and remove them if necessary,”

Councillor Child said.

“We have removed several trees on Council land – as we did in 2017-2020 to reduce the risk of fruit fly spreading.

“Fruit trees on public land are beloved by the community but can pose a risk when fruit fly is detected. We work with landowners and Agribusiness Yarra Valley to help owners eradicate fruit flies when detected, but sometimes extra measures are necessary.”

Cr Child said the agricultural industry in the Yarra Ranges is the fourth biggest industry in the industry and worth over $700 million.

“It is imperative that we maintain and act swiftly in stopping this invasive species from getting a foothold in the Yarra Ranges,” he said.

“We’re asking all community members who have backyard fruit trees to prune trees to manageable sizes, pick fruit when it is ripe – not letting it fall to the ground and spoil – to keep an eye out for fruit flies, reporting any sightings to Agribusiness Yarra Valley.”

Following a confirmed detection, Council works with residents and businesses in the affected area by providing information and guidance on how to prevent or reduce spread in their gardens, the statement read.

Meeting hears road conditions ‘desperate’ in Kallista

By Tyler Wright Kallista residents came together on Thursday 2 March to discuss funding sources to seal dirt roads in the area, after it was announced more than $100 million would be cut from the local Roads for the Community program in January.

Kallista resident and local floodwatch group member Karen Kestigian said some 50 people met at the Kallista Tea Rooms to discuss funding sources for road sealing with Casey MP Aaron Violi, Monbulk MP Daniela De Martino and Lyster Ward councillor Johanna Skelton.

“They all got the understanding that those roads are in a very desperate state,” Ms Kestigian said.

Gleghorn Road was one of the roads set to be sealed under the Roads for the Community program, with the Star Mail previously reporting Yarra Ranges Council would only receive $47.7 million of the original $150 million promised by the Federal liberal government in 2019 after funding was cut in the Federal government’s October budget.

ous deluge, as has happened previously, the water coming down from Baringa [Avenue], Norton [Road], St James [Avenue] is just going to make that surface even worse.”

Mr Violi said the Kallista township experiences “devasting flooding caused by unsealed roads and drainage problems”.

“Not only are the unsealed roads a safety hazard for residents and tourists, the stormwater run-off is polluting local creeks,” he said.

“The Kallista residents should not have to stress about sandbagging or having damaged homes every time we get a downpour. The Albanese Government need to understand the importance of road sealing to our communities.”

Mr Violi also said it was “great to see such a large turnout of so many communityminded residents from the Hills who are fighting for improvements to local roads and drains”.

“I will continue to work with the Kallista Flood Watch Group as we fight to get this funding reinstated so we can get these dangerous roads sealed,” he said.

Ausnet works a switch off

By Tyler Wright A Selby family say they had to move out of their rental due to the disruption being caused by an Ausnet construction next door to their home.

Ella Hamilton lived in the Belgrave-Gembrook Road property for three years before she says their daily life was affected by the construction of a Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter (REFCL).

REFCL are structures designed to protect high bushfire risk communities from bushfire; limiting the amount of energy released when an earth fault occurs, including a fallen tree or wildlife touching the pole and powerline at the same time.

Preliminary work began in February 2022, with the site expected to house two prefabricated buildings, each one about the size of a 20-foot shipping container.

One building will enclose the isolation transformer, the other electronic equipment that enables the REFCL to operate.

Ms Hamilton said the works over this time have caused her family too much stress and ultimately forced them to make the decision to move out of the home and in with family interstate.

“They had all sorts of machinery coming in and out,” Ms Hamilton said.

“They had a generator out the front that was so loud...We were constantly having to negotiate getting out of our driveway...the fence was down for a week, so we had zero privacy.”

Unable to cope and unable to find a rental in the Dandenong Ranges, Ms Hamilton and her partner Edryan decided to move in with family in Brisbane with their infant daughter in January 2023.

“We have spent over $10,000 moving up here to get away from it...It’s just devastating, nobody wants to have to go through that.”

A landowner told the Star Mail they expect the value of their property to be lowered due to construction.

“It’s four doors away from the general store.

It’s prime real estate location; people drive through Selby now; that is what they’re going to remember that Selby is,” the landowner said.

“Real estate agents have said people move to the hills for a tree change and for the scenery and for the wildlife.

“Who’s going to want to live next to that?”

An Ausnet spokesperson told the Star Mail

the company has been “working on the planning and installation of bushfire mitigation technology in the Belgrave area” and the system has protected “over 12,000 residents over the summer”.

“In 2021 we identified the need for a REFCL system to be built at Selby to better protect the area. We have been keeping neighbouring residents informed about our activities at the Selby site since August 2021,” the spokeperson said.

“AusNet has complied with all applicable statutory planning and environmental requirements and laws, including the removal of

asbestos, and will continue to do so.”

The spokesperson said Ausnet is currently working to address noise from the site, and has engaged an independent consultant to undertake an acoustic study to ensure that emitted noise meets allowable levels as set by the Environment Protection Authority.

“We will undertake remedial actions if needed.

“Security cameras do not overlook properties, and lighting has been turned off until cowling can be installed to prevent it affecting neighbours.”

Ausnet is also working on screening and vegetation planting around the site to improve visual aesthetics, the spokesperson said.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused during construction.”

Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Planning and Sustainable Futures Kath McClusky said no planning permit was required from the council for the facility.

“One of the recommendations from the Bushfire Royal Commission was that electricity suppliers should install REFCL technology across the network to better protect residents from bushfires that are started by powerline faults and failures. This recommendation was then mandated by the State Government,” Ms McClusky said.

Ms McClusky said the council is aware of concerns in the community and sympathise with their frustrations and concerns regardining the proposal, however the council has “no authority to influence or change the outcome”.

“We encourage community members to reach out directly to AusNet if they have concerns about the project,” she said.

“No planning permit is required for the demolition of the buildings on the site or to install a Rapid Earth Fault Current Limiter, which is classed as a “Minor Utility Installation,” therefore Council did not have an opportunity to respond to either the proposal or the design.”

60-year member recognised among 20 Yellingbo firies

By Callum Ludwig The Yellingbo Fire Brigade was finally able to host its first Awards Night in three years to recognise the longtime service of its members.

The brigade gathered for dinner at the Home Hotel on Wednesday 15 February, with awards recognising milestones from five years all the way up to 60.

Yellingbo CFA Captain Jeremy Hardy said it was obviously really appreciated the members were still able to be committed and help out where they can over the last few years.

“It was harder for us in that we were restricted in what we could do, but certainly it was still important for us to be there for the community in their time of need and turn out vehicles for emergency situations,” he said.

“It’s good for newer members as well to see that there are members here that have been around for many, many years, have a lot of experience and have seen changes to the CFA over the years. It gives stability to the brigade and the community.”

Bruce Logan was recognised for 60 years of service to Yellingbo CFA. Mr Logan said he was one of the founding members of the brigade.

“We used to meet under a tree, only about half a dozen of us with a knapsack each. It grew from there to have a trailer unit which was pulled by someone with a tractor or heavy vehicle and then to a Willys fourwheel-drive. Eventually, we pushed for a tin shed from the CFA and it was put up by our own members,” he said.

“I’m the longest-serving active CFA member now but the members we have now at

Yellingbo Fire Brigade are very keen. I’ve enjoyed it, it’s something very important to do for the community, to protect the community’s lives and homes.”

During Mr Logan’s time, he even took the Willy’s four-wheel-drive to Parliament House to meet the Governor of Victoria.

Mr Logan said his strongest memories of volunteering with the brigade were in helping fight fires at Cann River in 1983 and locally on Ash Wednesday the same year.

“The fire down there at Cann River was

10 year award recipients. a massive backburn, the Forestry Commission had bulldozers and were clearing the line, the army we’re using flamethrowers to light the backburn and it was the CFA’s job to maintain it and make sure it didn’t burn back over,” he said.

“Ash Wednesday was the biggest one, I had about 100 men under me, but never lost a fireman. Eventually, we couldn’t do much with it because it was so big, so we went out to Kurth Kiln [Regional Park] and stopped it there when the wind slowed down. mailcommunity.com.au

Skill opportunities expand

By Mikayla van Loon Knoxbrooke is looking to expand one of its Mount Evelyn based disability support and employment opportunities with a long term vision of doubling in size.

Outsource, the social enterprise’s packaging and distribution warehouse located on Clancy Road, currently employs around 42 people with a disability who may have never been considered for work.

With the main arm of the social enterprise, the Yarra View and Bushland Nursery, flourishing over the last couple of years, Knoxbrooke Group CEO Kristian Dauncey said it’s now time to turn the focus to Outsource to provide more employment opportunities for local people.

“We want to bring some of that excitement over here and give it the same love, care and attention because the nursery is not for everybody, not everyone likes to work in the great outdoors, in the sun or rain,” he said.

“Some people like noisy machinery, wearing high-vis and PPE, others like packaging and the camaraderie and talking with people so it’s a different type of work and what we’re trying to do is accommodate all people with disabilities.”

Joining Outsource six months ago as general manager to help grow the organisation’s reach, Abdul Bakhach said for workers, each day can be different, with so much variety in tasks and customers using their services.

From packaging bonsai kits to essential oils and lollies, to chopping wood for kindling, Mr Bakhach said “that’s why a lot of our employees here love it because they’re never bored”.

With 20 odd customers already using Outsource on a regular and loyal basis, Mr Bakhach said the work is there ready for more supported employees to come on board.

“We’re looking to grow and our strategy and our wish is to be 100 employees within 12

months. We’ve started now to try and recruit new employees and then with that, new staff as well,” he said.

As more and more manufacturing is done onshore by Australian companies, Mr Dauncey said there is an opportunity there for people with a disability to have secure work.

“We’ve come out of the Covid lockdowns and there’s a supply shortage and so people are understanding the importance of onshoring their work.

“There’s this real push for onshoring whatever they can, having that security of supply and that’s worked out really well for our business because for many years it’s gone the other way, offshoring whatever they can.

“We’re not about packaging and we’re not here about profit, although profits are important, we’re really here to create opportunities for people with disabilities…and ultimately, we’ll stop growing when every person who has a disability, who wants to work, has a job.”

“We know there’s a good number of people in our community who have finished school, may have attempted work, become despondent by that experience and haven’t worked since.

“It’s those individuals we’d love to reactivate and give them that opportunity because we know often in mainstream employment, it can be a really isolating experience, there isn’t any support around that individual.”

20 open years of artfulness

By Tyler Wright The Dandenong Ranges Open Studios will mark 20 years in the community this year, showcasing the work of more than 50 local artists.

Over the years, the event has seen over 7500 studio visitations each weekend.

Tracey Roberts has been a part of the program for 14 years, showcasing visual art from her studio in The Patch.

“I have a garden full of banged up old musical instruments which I plant...some of the things are still playable, but they’re well past their use by date. Some are damaged beyond repair, but it’s a really beautiful place for them to see out their life and to return from the place they came from.,” Roberts said.

“It’s a metaphor for life, if you like...people of all ages can enjoy my open studios experience; there’s concerts, they can sit and talk to me, have a look at all the artwork that I have all around the dome and in the windows of the dome as well.”

The annual open studios group exhibition, ‘Transcend,’ will run from Friday 31 March to Saturday 13 May at Burrinja Gallery, showcasing artists’ takes on nature, community spirituality and interior worlds.

“The other thing that’s interesting about this year is that it’s the 20th anniversary of Open Studios, there are a few additional things happening, including a really beautiful art book [Hidden in the Hills: the artists of the Dandenong Ranges]... which will be launched before Open Studios in middle of April,” Roberts said.

“It’s a limited edition book that represents over 50 artists all across the hills, many of whom are Open Studios artists; and it’s going to be a really beautiful coffee table art book for

people to get an insight into the artists that live up here in the Dandenong Ranges and how we became to be artists and what inspires us and how we produce our work and a general ethos.”

The fact that Open Studios is still going after 20 years, Roberts said, is a testament to the event’s quality and success as an experience for people from all over Melbourne.

“It’s good to be able to have people think about things in a different way. And that’s the role of an artist, really, is to try and create work to encourage people to discuss, think about different ways of seeing the world; the good, bad and the ugly, to promote conversation and discussion, and not just to make life more beautiful and interesting, but to actually encourage people to think a little bit outside of the box and to appreciate that people do see the world in different ways and it can be quite intriguing and unifying as well.”

Dandenong Ranges Open Studios will be held Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 April 2023, with painters, sculptors and videographers alike sharing their work with the public.

Burrinja Gallery is located at the corner of Glenfern Road and Matson Drive in Upwey.

It will be Tracey Roberts’ 14th year participating in Dandenong Ranges Open Studios.

Dennis’s market time pays

By Parker McKenzie The last time the Star Mail spoke to Dennis Luke in early 2022, he was busy selling his self-published book at the Upper Gully Market.

Now, the ‘Aussie truckie’ turned author has republished the retitled Wild Night at McKenzie’s Bridge, after landing a deal with Aurora Publishing.

Mr Luke said he couldn’t put into words how exciting it was to have his mystery thriller book published.

“It’s very difficult to get your book published, especially if you’re not known. People will get their book published because they’re politicians or sports stars,” he said.

“Someone like me who has come from obscurity, I guess you could say, has difficulty.

When I first published the book as Aussie Fury: a Truckee’s Tale, I got two responses from publishers, but they wanted an exorbitant amount of money to publish it.”

He said after self-publishing his book, he began selling it at local markets.

“Since then, I’ve sold over 730 copies at markets and to friends, family and work colleagues,” Mr Luke said.

“After being published with Aurora, it was given professional editing and around 10,000 words were removed.”

The novel is set after Cyclone Yasi in 2011 and follows three families, a murder and a search for the truth in Queensland.

Mr Luke said after a two-week promotional period with Amazon, the results looked positive.

“I got to number one in disaster fiction, number one in conspiracy thrillers and number two in psychological thrillers during that two weeks,” he said.

“You could say I’ve been a bit overwhelmed by that, I’m not going to find out for a few months as to how many sales though because they only give out numbers like that quarterly.”

He said if sales are strong and the novel is successful, he plans to continue writing a sequel he has begun work on.

Music council to host first youth awards since 2019

The Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) will host its Youth Music Awards Concert on Sunday 2 April from 2pm, the first time the event has been able to run since 2019.

Held at the DRMC, Upwey High School, the concert will feature the winners of the Bill Borthwick Young Musicians Encouragement Prize, the Ann and Chris Krans Music Award and the Jesse Exiner Instrumental Musical Encouragement Award winners for 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023.

DRMC Arts Administrator Karen Noonan said the entire organisation is excited to be able to finally host the event again.

“We’ve got some wonderful young talent who will have the opportunity to perform for other people,” she said.

“There’s the Bill Bothwick Prize, which is for musicians grade six and under, and the Ann and Chris Krans Music Award for 18 and under.”

She said it is important to give young people in the hills the opportunity to perform locally.

“It’s taking a while to rebuild back up again, but we’re getting back there,” she said.

“All our ensembles are back rehearsing and we’re gradually increasing our numbers, which is really great.”

The event will feature performances from all the winners of the awards since 2020.Ms Noonan said there are some “very high-standard performers.”

“I enjoy performing live because you have that interaction and creativity that’s created, and usually your audience is incredibly supportive,” she said.

“It’s a performance opportunity for these young people to continue to grow.”

Newest medicos in town The Medical Clinic Belgrave South is delighted to welcome two new doctors who have recently joined the family practice - Dr Swagat Shrestha and Dr Hnin P Aung.

Sandra Romero was overjoyed to receive the cheque from Mandy Burns.

Lab’s all fun and games Upper Ferntree Gully’s Coonara Community House has received a boost of $6,757 from Variety the Children’s Charity, to create a computer lab designed to help youth who are on the spectrum with computer gaming coding and programming skills.

Coonara Community House manager Sandra Romero said the lab network has been running for a long time, but new funding has provided three hard drives with more capability for graphics.

“There’s a lot of bullying, there’s a lot of ignorance and perhaps lack of education around what being on the spectrum means and how to develop a relationship with someone on the spectrum, and that’s really hard because of their social difficulties,” Ms Romero said.

“What we love about here is not only do we have access to gaining and consoles everything that goes around with coding as well, but the relationships that are formed are fantastic.

“We have young teenagers presenting really withdrawn or really antisocial because they don’t have those techniques. And a week, two weeks, three weeks later, they’re high-fiving their colleagues because they can’t wait to come here, and their parents are driving from up from whoop whoop just to come to this particular class.”

Coonara Community House was the first stop of Variety the Children’s Charity’s Rally Around Victoria on Friday 3 March, with some 25 motorists with various types of vehicles hitting the roads to raise funds for children living with disability, disadvantage or illness.

“We’re making lots of stops in the coming four days, granting to kids and communities along the way, as well as also spending money in regional communities,” Variety the Children’s Charity CEO Mandy Burns said.

“Variety as a children’s charity recognises that kids and communities sometimes face challenges, that, despite being a lucky country, we have gaps, particularly left by NDIS or Medicare or education, and Variety raises money to fill those gaps.

“The people that are coming along today on the rally around Victoria are part of that fund-

raising effort to help to raise funds for communities and kids and to help make a difference.”

With two classes running on a Tuesday and Thursday each week for youth aged 10 to 16,

with around 10 to 15 participants, Ms Romero said she expects demand for programming workshops to keep increasing.

“We were so grateful to be able to receive

three brand new hard drives to accommodate the needs of the lab network, and it’s just to start with; if we can take another class, the demand is just going to keep increasing.”

Funding shortfall

By Michael Smith Sadly, when community members contact Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) for legal help, family violence is most often the problem they need support with.

In 2022, an alarming 84 per cent of Yarra Ranges residents receiving assistance were experiencing or at risk of family violence.

A key resource in addressing this issue is the work of the Ringwood Court, particularly in considering Family Violence Intervention Order applications, made by from Victoria Police of people directly affected.

A new Specialist Family Violence Court was established at Ringwood in late 2022, but unfortunately ECLC remains extremely concerned that it has only been partially established, with a lack of sufficient resources.

Since Ringwood Court is the closest court to the Yarra Ranges, this lack of funding has a direct effect on victims of family violence in the Yarra Ranges who are seeking help and support at a particularly vulnerable time of their lives.

Although the vision of the Specialist Family Violence Courts to provide easier access to court and promote the “safety of people affected by violence” according to the Magistrates Court of Victoria is, admirable and welcome, the resourcing of the recent Specialist Family Violence Courts established in late October 2022 falls well short of this model.

Unlike the first five Specialist Family Violence Courts locations established in 2019/2020, no increased funding has been provided to Community Legal Centres, including ECLC or to Victoria Legal Aid, despite the increased demand and complexity of the new model.

In October, ECLC extremely reluctantly placed a limit on the number of community members, predominantly women, that the team could assist each day at court. Since then, ECLC has consistently had to turn away people seeking legal advice at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court due to the lack of resources to staff this appropriately.

ECLC will continue to advocate for more funding to be allocated but until this is re-

Picture: GOOGLE MAPS solved, family violence victim-survivors who are in the most vulnerable positions, are left unsupported in an already complex and overwhelming system.

Specialist Family Violence Courts were designed to hear intervention order cases at the same time as other matters, including bail applications and pleas in criminal cases, family law parenting order matters and victims of crime applications related to family violence.

Until more funding is provided by the State Government to ECLC and other services, victim survivors in the Yarra Ranges and eastern suburbs will be left unsupported and let down by a system that is supposed to protect them.

Cruel Intentions The Musical: A review Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre was the venue for Cruel Intentions the Musical, based on Les Liaisons Dangereuses from the novel written by Pierre Choderios de Laclos in 1782.

The story of the musical is where we enter the manipulative world of Manhattan’s most dangerous liaisons: Sebastian Valmont and Katherine Merteuil. Fuelled by revenge and passion, the diabolically charming stepsiblings place a bet on whether or not Sebastian can deflower their incoming headmaster’s daughter.

The production is magnificent theatre.

The show was sparkling, Music very good, lighting a good standard and overall, a very interesting evening of theatre.

Kemp’s curtain call The performers were outstanding with Kirby Burgess as Kathy Merteuil giving an outrageous and sterling performance. Her stepbrother, Sebastian Valmont, played by Drew Weston, dominated the stage in his scenes, catching the fine nuances of such a character. The other players lived up to the standard set by these two giving an interest-

ing evening of theatre.

The show had a standing ovation, well deserved by such a production, but one would not recommend it to the over 50s as it is definitely a show for the younger generation and Sir Arthur Rylah would not approve.

The 1812 Theatre presents The Shorehorn Sonata In 1945 Sheila and Birdie were freed from a Japanese POW camp.

Now after a half-century separation, the filming of a TV documentary forces them to relive the past. Woven into the 50 years of separation are a shoe-horn and the threads of loyalty and love which form their uncommon bond.

Season: March 23 – April 22.

Jung-e is exciting, moving and inventive JUNG_E Starring Kang Soo-yeon, Kim Hyun-joo and Ryu Kyung-soo Rated M 4.25/5 Jung_e is an enthralling South Korean science fiction character drama about love and identity.

In a dystopian future, a research team tests a groundbreaking combat AI, JUNG-E (Kim Hyun-joo), based on project lead Yun Seohyun’s (Kang Soo-yeon) mother, but can’t get it to pass a deadly test.

Jung_e has an engrossing, poignant slow build of discovery, as tests and board meetings boil down to a daughter reconnecting with her lost mother, with Seo-hyun (and us) coming to realise the human reality of the AI being she is working on. The plot also contains some clever satire of corporate culture and the commodification of human identities.

Family saga

Hyun-joo portrays a formidable but often heartbreaking figure, Soo-yeon plays Seohyun with sombre grace, and Ryu Kyung-soo is a very fun antagonist as Kim Sang-Hoon, a ruthless and theatrical lab director.

The visual design and cinematography are stunning, and the short but sweet action sequences are easy to follow, well-composed and very tense.

With its juxtaposition of industrial, often biomechanical sci-fi imagery with bright colours and lighting, Jung_e’s visual design feels like a moving Simon Stalenhag book. Jung_e feels like a far better live-action Ghost in the Shell movie than the one from 2017, with several scenes and plot-points that pay clear tribute to Masamune Shirow’s manga and Mamoru Oshii’s anime.

Jung_e also has tonal similarities with Alien: Covenant, in that both films shift from low-key, contemplative conflict to breakneck action in the climax. The action climax is both a thrilling spectacle and a satisfying emotional culmination, but some viewers may find this shift jarring.

Exciting and deeply moving, and inventive despite its many clear influences, Jung_e is available for streaming on Netflix.

A review of The Fig Tree by Goran Vojnovi The Fig Tree, written by Slovenian poet, columnist, screenwriter and film director Goran Vojnovi? and brilliantly translated into English by Olivia Hellewell, is recommended to our readers by Ljubljana UNESCO City of Literature.

The novel won the prestigious Kresnik Award in 2017, distinguished as the best Slovenian novel of that year. It also received a Župan?i? Award, the highest recognition of the City of Ljubljana for outstanding creation in the field of art and culture.

As praised by the award judges, Vojnovi? asks “questions about human identity in our wider geographical space”.

“The characters in the novel go in and out of the area of Ljubljana to speak even more harshly and maturely about foreignness and borders, about being destined to be an external refugee because of national, urban and generational prejudices.”

This is an important observation because the novel’s first-person narrator Jadran tries to understand not just the stories of his grandparents and parents, but also the extent to which his own identity and life story is shaped by them.

In this sense, through the eyes of Jadran, Vojnovi? explores the nature and significance of storytelling as an (often voluntary) act that enables and even empowers the forming of one’s (self-) identity.

In the character’s words: “The whole story was put together so that within it I might find what I was looking for. Justification for my actions, for my fears, disappointments and longing; reasons for my sadness, for the anger...

“In this story, in this beautiful, orderly world, I understand myself; I understand what I feel and I understand how I behave. This story enables me to be what I am; to be me.”

Along the process, the stories of Aleksander, Jana, Safet and Vesna are captivating, thanks to Vojnovi?’s powerful illustration of how personal and public tensions can intertwine and impact at the individual level as a result of deliberate manipulation of carefully selected historical events and identities (read: ethnic, cultural and even linguistic pigeonholes).

As these characters experienced the breakdown of Yugoslavia, they became both a product and the victims of their time.

The shared past of Serb, Croat, Slovene and Bosnian people became a source of comfort as well as constant conflict.

While some chose to escape, others retreated into a “homeland” to which they did not and would never belong, and still others could only concentrate on “survival without humiliation or oppression”.

Thus The Fig Tree reminds us of Sri Lankan-born Canadian author Michael Ondaaje’s 1992 novel The English Patient, whose protagonist László de Almásy, a desert explorer, knows only too well that geopolitical boundaries are little more than lines drawn on paper.

Still, these fabricated lines have irrevocably changed real lives.

As Vesna laments: “It’s like someone’s drawn a border through me. They’ve drawn borders through us, through all of us. They’ve drawn borders between me, my mother and my father. It’s now up to someone else to decide if I can see my parents.”

Honing students’ skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Humanities, the new programs aim to inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, and inventors through the steam locomotive, a mode of transport which gave the world many of the technological advances we benefit from today.

Puffing Billy Railway’s Endless Discovery program invites students from Foundation to VCE on board the discovery train with the addition of three new programs and a virtual excursion experience.

Launched in 2022, Endless Discovery is linked to the Victorian Early Years Learning Framework and the Victorian curriculum and is led by Puffing Billy Railway Education Officers.

Each program combines the Puffing Billy train journey with interactive learning activities that engage students in a diverse set of topics such as probability and statistics, environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability at the railway and how technological advances have impacted work roles in the community.

Turning the wheels in engines and students’ minds, excursions also include an immersive guided workshop at the Lakeside Visitor Centre as they experience the inner workings of the Puffing Billy Railway steam train and learn about engineering systems, sustainability, community, history, materials, tools, design and technology.

The introduction of the Endless Discovery

virtual excursion program will also welcome a new cohort of students to experience the Puffing Billy journey from afar. Schools who opt for the virtual experience will have access to the same range of education programs as the guided tours, from Early Years through to VCE. For both options, teachers are provided with pre and post learning resources for students to complete in the classroom before and after the excursion.

Up to $10,000 in funding is available to leisure and sporting organisations who want to improve their facilities with projects on land owned or managed by Knox City Council.

By Tyler Wright As regional football and netball clubs across the state shut their doors ahead of the upcoming season, the Outer East Football Netball League (OEFNL) has been looking to help clubs that are struggling.

“So far in metropolitan country footy, there’s eight clubs that have gone into recess this year, and that would be a record high; and there’ll be more,” OEFNL chairman Tony Mitchell said.

“Struggles have been financial for clubs; we reimbursed all clubs, all fees and charges back in 2020, in [2021] we only had half the season, we had the full season last year but the biggest challenges for the clubs, the real challenge of

footy and netball is particularly footy reserves players because a lot of those guys can earn money on a Saturday working that are playing sport,” Mr Mitchell said.

Impacted by floods in October 2022, Mr Mitchell said the league committee has been focusing on Yarra Glen Football and Netball Club.

“We’re actually going to give them three sets of football jumpers, which we’ll pay for,” Mr Mitchell said.

“They’ve lost everything...they can’t do anything to get the club rooms up so they can be functional,” Mr Mitchell said.

“The other thing is how’s it going to leave them financially because they can’t have functions and events.”

Mr Mitchell said clubs in the OEFNL are sitting at an appropriate amount of players registered, with some needing to hunt down more registrations.

He also said clubs in the southeast corridor and western corridor including Pakenham, Berwick Springs and Narre Warren are set to grow.

“We’re at three years of consolidation and then other areas might grow, like southeast corridor and the western corridor,” he said.

“There’s a lot of population down there; we’ve just got to make sure that there’s an opportunity to develop new clubs and assist people to get into the sport.”

The 2023 OEFNL season will begin on 15 April.

Former Collingwood premiership winner and Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan will make a one-off appearance for The Basin Football Netball Club on 29 April.

Club President Alex Winters said having Swan play for the club was an opportunity to make some money and get some publicity for the team.

“It just sets you up for the future. The Clubs going pretty well financially, we don’t have drama with that, but you can never have enough funds because you don’t know what’s going to happen the next year,” he said.

“We’re excited to have him down and we look forward to as many people coming down and supporting the club, enjoying the day and we hope it’s a big thing for the community.”

Swan, who won the premiership with Collingwood in 2010 and the Brownlow Medal in 2011, played 258 AFL games and kicked 211 goals.

Swan isn’t the first former AFL star to appear for the Bears after Barry Hall pulled on the green and red jersey in 2017.

Winters said the club had around 3000 people down for Hall’s appearance.

“If you are in the premiership window, you probably don’t want to get any of the players offside by bringing in someone from outside the club for one game,” he said.

“We’re middle of the pack at the moment and a lot of our kids are young, we think they’d be able to learn a fair bit just by playing one game with Dane, so this is probably the right time to do it.”

Swan will appear against Templestowe at Batterham Reserve on Saturday 29 April.

Batterham Reserve is located at 10 Miller Road, The Basin.

Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club’s sweep of success

By Parker McKenzie Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club can look back on a season full of success, with every senior team and the under 18s qualifying for finals.

Club President Dwayne Richardson said the 2022/23 season was the most successful in recent history.

“Last year, we won the Division One Cup and that’s the first time in 20 years we’ve won it,” he said.

“To have our ones, twos, threes, fours, and women’s, 18s and both masters’ teams in finals this year is a huge overall success for the club.”

The club won the Division One Premiership after going on a 12-game undefeated streak, before winning the finals series and their first title since 2002.

Richardson said a long-term focus on building the community around the club has been the major factor in the successful season.

“When you enjoy yourself, you perform better whatever you’re doing. I really do believe

that, and the great coaching we’ve got at the moment has contributed too.”

The club now has over 100 junior players, with four u12 teams, an under 14s and an under 18s.

Richardson said while the club isn’t as large as during the 1980s when he first joined and had 500 junior players, it is “on the rise again.”

“We’re going to continue to build our community, build the culture that we have down there and hopefully be able to continue to attract new people to the sport,” he said.

“That’s the big thing for us, getting more kids out the hills and getting them down to play our sport and hopefully then be able to continue to see the success that we are seeing on-field.”

The club also has a high chance of winning the Club Championships, which is the total tally of the top four teams at the club, after finishing second behind Essendon Royals last season.

Richardson said the biggest success of the year is the women’s team, which was established the previous season after 15 years without one at Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club.

“I think they won one game last year, they won one game before Christmas and then they’ve just gone five games in a row after Christmas to scrape themselves into the four and make finals,” he said.

“Two years after coming back into a women’s competition, that’s just if we can continue to grow all of those aspects that I’ve mentioned there, that would be what I would like to continue to see.”

The club also has two junior players who could potentially represent Australia at the u18 World Cup. Upwey makes grand final The Upwey-Tecoma first XI has booked their spot in a home grand final after downing Ferntree Gully in the Norm Reeves Shield semi final on Saturday at Knox Gardens Reserve.

In steamy conditions, Ferntree Gully captain Josh Henry won the toss and elected to bat first. It didn’t take long for young seamer Jay Colee to pierce the defence of Blues opener Andri Berenger, giving the Tigers the perfect start. Another quick wicket to Steve Collard reduced the Blues to 2/27, the Tigers grabbing the early ascendency.

A fifty run stand between Henry and Victoria County representative Jake Toohey threatened to wrest control back for Ferntree Gully. before an astonishing middle order collapse saw the Blues lose 4/9. Tigers off-spinner Steve Gannell claimed 3/3 in 3 overs, with Cameron Wheeler taking the other wicket, to have the Blues teetering at 6/87.

The Ferntree Gully tail set about a rescue mission but regular wickets saw them all out in the 39th over for 147. Collard was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with 2/20, while Gannell (3/29), Wheeler (2/25) and Jules Whetstone (2/20) were all solid contributors for the Tigers.

Chasing 148 for victory, freshly-promoted Tiger opener Laurence Jansby burst out of the blocks with some aggressive stroke-making to get Upwey-Tecoma’s chase off to a flyer. The opening partnership between Andrew Evans and Jansby ended on 54 when Jansby holed out off Blues spinner Rory Bailey for a boundaryladen 38 of 40 balls.

Tiger captain Jackson Waters joined Evans, as they advanced the score past the 100 mark with some steady batting against some disciplined Blues bowling. The loss of Evans (22) and Waters (34) in quick succession gave the Blues a glimmer of hope, before some late hitting from Hunter Greenall snuffed out any chance of a miracle victory for Ferntree Gully.

The Upwey-Tecoma Under 16s before their semi-final against Eildon Park. on 4/148 to book their ticket to the big dance against either Ferntree Gully or Lysterfield in a fortnight at Upwey Reserve.

The season is over for the second XI, losing their semi-final to Lysterfield at Eildon Park.

The Tigers lost the toss and were invited to field.

The Beavers were largely stifled by some tight Tiger bowling throughout their innings, crawling their way to 9/138 off their 40 overs.

Young left arm orthodox spinner Darcy Whitten continued his superb run of form, capturing 4/10 off 7 overs.

As is so often the case in finals, the added pressure can make a seemingly simple chase all the more tricky. Despite a bright start to the

chase, none of the Tiger batters ever got going. They were all out for 95 in reply, with Chris Jewell top scoring with 24.

It was heartbreak for the 3rd XI in their semifinal against Lysterfield, with a tie not enough to see them through as the lower ranked team in the contest.

Fielding first, the Tigers bowled brilliantly to restrict the Beavers to 147, with opener Aidan Beattie the pick of the bowlers with 3/24.

It was a see-sawing run chase with both sides looking like winners at various stages of the innings. With the Tigers needing one run to win off three balls, the Beavers claimed the last wicket to send them through to a grand final

The Under 16s were also bundled out of the finals, losing their semi-final away to Eildon Park.

It was a nightmare start for the Tigers, reeling at 4/4 at one stage before Asher Caldow (25) and Harry Burrows (30 retired) added some respectability to the scoreline. The Tigers were dismissed for 95, which was well below par.

The Panther chase started well and they were never really troubled, finishing on 5/97 for a comfortable 5 wicket win. Zach Seal was the Tiger’s best bowler with 1/10 off four overs.

Clever shots seen for round five of pennant Monbulk 2 gets close

A high overcast greeted players for round five of the Eastern Suburbs Senior Pennant.

No one stayed under the blankets, and everyone gravitated to the Box Hill golf club for the now customary 7.30am start.

A few coffees and light pullovers were needed until the warming sun and swinging arms had the blood moving.

The well-manicured course was set up for great contests to be had regardless of handicaps. Fast greens were commented on by many players and well grassed and clipped fairways gave value for good shots. Quite a few shots which were not good also benefited from a good long roll.

Casual observation of matches saw some remarkable highlights.

Terry Payne (Heritage) scraping the hole with his tee shot on the par3 ninth.

Bob Morgan (Yering Meadows) hitting the flag and stopping 30cm away to get in the hole and match on the 18th over Terry Payne.

The hoo doo on Dave Martin (Heritage) watching his ball enter hazards on different holes.

Graham Cush (Box Hill) putting in from 10 meters several times to win holes from Rod Ashton (Eastern).

Joe Sykes (Box Hill green manager) did an excellent job preparing for the day. Joe was rewarded for this with a 2 and 1 win despite hitting the hazard with his first shot off the first tee.

A terrific golfing day was topped by a generous lunch and lots of gossip. The leaders are being challenged with two rounds to go before the finals.

Gold group has a race between three for the top and in green group the top four are separated by 3 points.

Monbulk 2, in division 4, was the last surviving Monbulk side in the Midweek competition and they travelled to Berwick to play against the top side, Pakenham. The game started as expected, with the strong Pakenham side getting some early points and taking a seven-shot lead on the big board after the fifth end. Then Monbulk bowlers started finding their range and staged an impressive fightback. By the halfway mark Monbulk was five shots up, looking sharp, and their opponents were getting narky with each other. Then the lunch break came, and as sometimes happens, switches get flicked.

Klaus Eisele’s team, who had been leading by four shots, dropped a 4, then a 5, and then five ends in a row, to finish the twenty-one ends with a 10-shot deficit, 17 shots to 27.Peter Lee’s team had been trailing, but, after a cuppa, they swung into action, only dropping three ends in the back half, and collecting some good multiples to finish the twenty-one ends with nine shots up, 21 to 12.

Alan Hamilton’s team had a close match until, in sight of the finish, Monbulk stacked on a few ends in a row to take a seven-shot lead with just two ends to go. But then they dropped a 1 and a 5 to finish with a minimal lead 18 shots to 17.

A quick calculation will show that the scores were then level, and that meant all three rinks had to play a one end sudden death playoff – a rare sight that gets all the hearts racing.It was close, but Pakenham ultimately came away with the chocolates. Overall Monbulk 2 lost 57 shots to 59. Yes, it was frustrating to be so close to the premiership and see it slip away, but it was a mighty effort against a side that has been on top all season. It was a season for Monbulk to be proud of.
