Plans have been unveiled for a large Sikh temple on the border of Pakenham’s green wedge. Sikh Sewaks Australia (SSA), a not-for-profit organisation, is hoping to build a 2900sqm building with internal courtyard on a 9ha property, with 89 car spaces and 47 informal car spaces. The site, 195 Dore Rd Pakenham, is 380 metres north of the urban growth boundary which contains established residential areas and developing residential precincts of the Pakenham East Precinct Structure Plan (PSP).

Some residents in the green wedge have expressed concern about over-development in their rural area. The permit, which is currently being advertised on Cardinia Shire Council’s website, proposes opening hours for the assembly/ prayer hall to be Monday to Sunday 5.30am to 10pm as well as guided meditations 6.30pm to 9.30pm Fridays and Saturdays and 6am, 10am and 2pm Sundays. SSA received honours in the 2021 and 2022 Holt Australia Day Awards for services they provided during the 2019 bushfires and the Covid-19 pandemic. The spokesperson said the group was, “excited to be part of the community that lives along Dore Road”. “[We] do not want to create any uneasiness for the existing residents and for ourselves and as such have complied with every request for added information posed by the council,” the spokesperson said. It also lists meetings associated with organising accommodation and financial support for vulnerable individuals and families, providing spiritual counselling in person or through a hotline, horse riding classes and organic farming. In a letter provided by SSA, a spokesperson said the main function of the proposed use was for worship and charity work for the Sikh Sewak community.
