Summer is halfway through, but there’s plenty of beach weather to come. The temperature pushed into the mid-30s in Geelong on Tuesday before cooling off for the rest of the week. But the forecast for the weekend is promising, with the mercury expected to push back to the mid-20s.

Rebecca Page and son Max from Ballarat took advantage of the warm conditions on Tuesday with a visit to Eastern Beach to cool off.

Epworth maternity rally The race to save Epworth Hospital’s maternity unit is showing no signs of slowing down, with concerned residents holding a rally in Armstrong Creek this week.

More than 100 people attended the event at Armstrong Creek East Community Hub on Tuesday, January 17 to help save the unit, which could close on March 1.

On November 28, the hospital announced it would stop taking maternity bookings due to staff shortages, and there are fears the department will close its doors altogether on March 1 although the hospital says it is still in the consulting stage.

Organisers of the event said they were disappointed Epworth failed to send a representative to the rally.

Dr Elise Davey, whose petition to save the maternity ward has garnered nearly 14,000 signatures, said the Armstrong Creek East Community Hub was packed.

“We were thrilled with the turn out and how many people were able to come considering it’s school holidays and such a hot day,” she said on Wednesday. “We were really impressed with the speakers of the panel. Obviously the glaring problem of the day was that Epworth didn’t send anyone to attend.

“I haven’t had any contact from Epworth today and still my emails remain unanswered.”

Barwon Health spokesperson Kate Bibby said the growing region’s two other hospitals – the public University Hospital and the private St John of God – had the capacity to accept more patients if Epworth closed its maternity department doors.

However, Dr Davey said anonymous midwives had come forward, issuing statements that contradicted Ms Bibby’s comments.

“I do not see how that is a realistic possibility,” she said. “Although it feels like a decision has already been made, just never underestimate the power we have in expressing our concerns because when this all started I was told the unit would be closed before Christmas, so I think we’ve managed to push the decision out to now.

“Let’s keep that pressure on and see if we can get them to keep the unit open for the remainder of the year.”

An Epworth spokesperson said the hospital was continuing to consult with impacted staff.

“Consultation has included regular forums and one-on-one discussions with staff, obstetricians and paediatricians,” the spokesperson said.

“We have also regularly communicated to the referring general practice community throughout the consultation period.

“We expect consultation to be completed later this month, with a decision to be made soon after. We will extensively communicate the decision at the time.”

Wurriki Nyal throws doors open Wurriki Nyal, Greater Geelong’s new Civic Precinct, will throw open its doors to the public for an open day on Saturday, February 18.

The state-of-the-art building at 137-149 Mercer Street, Geelong features 2550 square metres of new public space and a centrally located customer service area to help the community access city services.

A smoking ceremony by Wadawurrung Traditional Owners will welcome residents to Wurriki Nyal at 9.30am, where the City of Greater Geelong will hold free half-hourly

tours from 10am to 1.30pm.

Mayor Trent Sullivan said the council’s new headquarters delivers on the aspirations of the community.

“I encourage community members to book a guided tour to learn about Wurriki Nyal’s cultural and sustainability features and how the community and Wadawurrung Traditional Owners helped shape the building,” he said.

“Wurriki Nyal is a significant council investment in Greater Geelong and will serve the community for decades to come.”

The 45-minute guided tours will cover the building’s links to the region’s Wadawurrung culture and its sustainability attributes and include a visit to the end-of-trip facilities.

Bookings are on a first come first serve basis at geelong.link/wurriki-nyal-open-daytickets, Construction on the city building began in mid-2020 and was completed in August 2022, with customer service opening to the public in September last year and more than 850 employees moving over.

The name Wurriki Nyal (pronounced: WUU-ruh-kih nee-YAHL) comes from Wadawurrung words meaning ‘speak and talk together’, and was decided through close engagement with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners.

A culturally significant scarred tree, believed to predate European settlement of the Geelong region, has been restored and relocated to Wurriki Nyal.

Call to save maternity units

Lions launch Good Friday Appeal Torquay Lions are hoping the club can beat its 2022 Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH) Good Friday Appeal tally of $13,000.

The club’s RCH appeal regional co-ordinator, Peter McMahon, said $13,000 was raised during a relatively short campaign last year.

“For the Good Friday Appeal this year, between now and Good Friday 2023, we believe we can raise close to $20,000,” he said.

“The dearth of funds for research and equipment for the RCH is understandable in this year of fires and floods where communities have been supporting those in distress with physical help, equipment and funds from

generous donors.

“Between now and Good Friday 2023, we will have tin shakers out and about in shopping centres around Torquay, caravan parks and wherever we think we can raise donations.”

Mr McMahon said the club is building teams of volunteers from Torquay Lions Club, Torquay RSL members and other community groups who have already leapt into action.

According to Mr McMahon, donating funds for the Good Friday Appeal, resonates with many families who have had some contact or contacts with the Royal Children’s Hospital over the years.

“Almost every family has been touched in some way or other by the Children’s Hospital which has helped so many youngsters,” he said.

“To put in a dollar or two to help the hospital with research, care and rehabilitation comes very easily for most donors.

“I recognise that times have not been so good for some people over the past few years, but it is so often the ones who can spare the least that are the most generous.”

The club has a QR code on its Facebook page that leads to a virtual tin for donors.

As the public campaign to save Epworth’s maternity ward in Geelong continues, the Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) called for federal and state governments to act urgently to prevent the closure of regional and rural maternity units.

The warning comes as a growing number of maternity units in regional and rural areas across the country remain on bypass or have announced their potential closure.

The RDAA reported these units cite shortages of midwives, specialist or rural generalist obstetricians as the reason for bypass or closure, while an “extensive number” of maternity wards have vacancies for obstetrics staff.

RDAA president Dr Megan Belot said enough was enough.

“In a wealthy country like Australia, we should be able to guarantee that when a woman needs to go to hospital to give birth – either for a planned delivery or an emergency delivery – she should be able to access the care she needs,” Dr Belot said.

“Unfortunately, this is clearly not the case, and these recent examples are sadly the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the continuing erosion of regional and rural birthing services across Australia.

“But there is a solution, and governments just need to be more active in implementing it.”

Dr Belot said an influx of rural generalist doctors provide an “effective and economical option”, and those with advanced skills in obstetrics could make “a huge difference” in regional, rural and remote locations.

A National Rural Generalist Pathway was announced in December 2018, but remains only half-implemented.

Not-for-profit donation platform GIVIT is asking for donations to help people and families across the Geelong region reach their education goals.

The GIVIT Ready to Learn Appeal gives donors the opportunity to help by donating or funding specific items and tools required to support the education of people in need.

GIVIT chief executive Sarah Tennant said education needs can arise at any time and can include stationary, digital devices or uniforms.

“GIVIT is calling for donations of educational materials for students and families in need of support,” she said.

“This includes traditional back to school items for primary and high school children but also needs for TAFE and university students, international students or refugees looking to improve their skills.”

Donation requests include school essentials for a mother and her child who are experiencing financial hardship after escaping domestic violence and are struggling to afford essential school supplies to allow the child to continue with their education.

The donation of a laptop is also requested for a Geelong woman who left a violent relationship and is completing an online course to further her education and work prospects.

There are more than 100 items currently needed in the Geelong region.

“Education is key to breaking the cycle of poverty,” Ms Tennant said.

The most requested items include exercise books, stationery, school bags, lunch boxes, drink bottles and laptops. School shoes, school uniforms, and vouchers to purchase these items are also often requested.

Property market ‘normal’: Agent

By Matt Hewson House prices in the Greater Geelong region corrected somewhat in the last quarter of 2022, with many suburbs experiencing negative growth, according to new data from the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV).

Overall, house prices in Geelong dropped by 1.9 per cent during the October-December quarter, with the majority of areas seeing less than two per cent movement in prices in either direction.

Thomson had the biggest median price drop in the last quarter of 2022, falling by 7.5 percent, closely followed by Drysdale (-7.4 per

cent ) and Newtown (-7.2 per cent).

Suburbs with the largest growth in quarter were Portarlington (5.9 per cent), Manifold Heights (5.6 per cent) and Barwon Heads (4 per cent).

Overall, Portarlington recorded 15.3 per cent growth through 2022, while Manifold Heights and Barwon Heads prices improved by 21.4 and 22 per cent, respectively.

REIV president Andrew Meehan said the market self-correction was to be expected after a period of such huge growth.

“We’ve gotten so used to increase upon increase of prices, I think this report says we’re in a normal market now,” Mr Meehan said.

“If you look across the suburbs in the Greater Geelong area, you have suburbs that went up in the last quarter, and also some that went down, and to me that all points to a normal market.

“I think most people have forgotten what normal is, really. We’ve had growth on growth for a very, very long time.”

Mr Meehan said infrastructure and lifestyle were two factors that continued to drive performance in areas like Geelong.

“The properties that have performed the best have been what you would call lifestyle properties,” he said.

“Some reasonably sized land, good

proximity to services and everything else. And slightly aspirational, too, would be the other factor.”

The market is expected to remain fairly stable for some time, Mr Meehan said, at least until around the middle of the year.

“My view is that once these interest rate rises are behind us – everything’s indicating that we’re going to see a reduction in the size of those rises and people seem to be factoring in those rises too – the prices will rebound again,” he said.

“I think we’ll see that in the spring market.

But I’m not expecting prices to do anything significant between now and then.”

Aussie stars set to race Three of Australia’s top-ranked cyclists will return to the 2023 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, with Giro d’Italia winner Jai Hindley set to compete for team Bora-hansgrohe, while Michael Matthews and Alex Manly will ride for Jayco AIUIa. Hindley, currently Australia’s top-ranked male cyclist, finished 34th in the 2020 edition of the event and said he was keen to better his previous result.

“I’m very excited to be back racing in the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race, I think it’s a great event and a great way to showcase a different part of Australia to the rest of the cycling world,” Hindley said.

“I think I’ve come a long way since I raced in 2020. I’ve had some results here and there, and grown a lot as a rider. I have a lot more experience and I’ll look to use that where I can in the race.”

Matthews and Manly will represent the Australian-based UCI World Tour team in their respective elite men’s and women’s squads, with the one-day classic format suiting both cyclists’ strengths.

Matthews, a four-time stage winner at the Tour de France, said he is looking forward to returning to the Great Ocean Road.

“I always have great memories returning to Geelong after winning the Under-23 UCI Road World Championships back in 2010. It’s a special place for me to race,” Matthews said.

“Everybody is so motivated, and we have a great team so it’s going to be a good day out and I can’t wait to race again in front of all the fans in Geelong.”

Manly, the second-highest ranked female rider in Australia, said she was thrilled to join top-ranked Aussie Grace Brown on the list of stars competing in the event.

while since I last raced there and it was sad that the race wasn’t able to go ahead the last couple of years,” Manly said.

“It’s such a beautiful, yet hard race that has a bit of everything. It’s a hard course that will suit our team well.”

The UCI WorldTour Deakin University Elite Women’s and UCI WorldTour Elite Men’s races are feature events over the three-day cycling showcase, which weaves its way through the scenic roads of the Geelong, Bellarine and Surf Coast regions from Friday, January 27 to Sunday, January 29.

River health is a priority The Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action together with the Corangamite Catchment Management Authority and Barwon Water are working to support the health of Anglesea River.

The work aims to protect the environment, benefit local communities and ensure the river remains a popular destination.

In recent weeks the level of the Anglesea River has dropped, creating a significant risk of activating acid sulfate soils at Coogoorah Park and releasing metals and acids into the river system.

While the river remains safe for water-based recreation, to prevent a significant impact on Anglesea’s aquatic environment, DEECA has requested Barwon Water to release stored water into the Anglesea River to reduce the risk of activating acid sulfate soils in Coogoorah Park.

While the stored water may contribute to increasing the acidity of the river, the risk of continued low water levels in the estuary is considered a greater risk due to its potential to activate additional areas of acid sulphate soils – a more significant and irreversible overall risk to the health of the Anglesea River.

DEECA said it has also worked with the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority, and Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria to minimise risks to native fish in the estuary.

By Cr Trent Sullivan It was wonderful to see the Melbourne Renegades in action at Kardinia Park in the BBL recently.

While the Geelong Cats occupy the stadium and the hearts of many in our region during winter, seeing this venue used for other purposes is always nice, as it shows its clear versatility.

The work on the northern end of the stadium is progressing well and soon we will have the premier regional venue in the country at full capacity once again.

In the meantime, council is keen to hear from residents about their thoughts on what can be done to make the entire Kardinia Park precinct even better.

We are in the process of developing a masterplan for this important space and want to hear from you.

Some people might be surprised to learn that Kardinia Park spans more than 22 hectares, which is a very big space.

The city manages 65 per cent of this, including the open space, community sports fields, aquatic centre, and the senior citizens building.

The Kardinia Park Stadium Trust manages the other 35 per cent including the Kardinia Park Stadium and plaza areas and the new northern plaza, as well as some of the cricket facilities currently under construction.

The stadium attracts more than 400,000 people annually and will soon have capacity for 40,000 spectators.

But it is important that people understand while the stadium and new development

The park’s assets will be assessed to ensure they remain relevant and fit for purpose moving forward.

Many people use Kardinia Park to park and walk into the city for work, and as it stands there is capacity for nearly 1300 car parks across the formal and informal parking areas.

This will be a key consideration in the development of the draft master plan, and once this has been developed, user groups and key stakeholders – as well as the wider community – will once again be invited to provide feedback before the final masterplan is considered by council.

Heroic teen saves drowning man

By Justin Flynn An Ocean Grove teenager who saved a Melbourne man from drowning last week has described the incident as “full on”.

Roo Robinson, 17, was walking along the beach between Raafs and Main Beach in Ocean Grove with his girlfriend Caity O’Leary on Wednesday, January 11, when a woman started screaming for help.

Her 26-year-old brother had been caught in a rip and was struggling to stay afloat.

“I heard this lady screaming ‘help, help my brother’ and I just looked up and saw her and my girlfriend said ‘just go’,” Roo said.

“She just pointed in a vague direction. I had a full adrenaline rush so I swam out there. I kept seeing seaweed and I thought I was going to be bringing in a dead body.

“He was about 250 to 300 metres out, fully panicking and fighting it all the way and out of energy.

“I got to him and told him ‘hey I’m a lifeguard and I’m here to save you and it’s going to be OK’.”

Roo, who had no flotation devices to assist with the rescue, stayed with the man for about five minutes to calm him down before attempting to bring him to shore. By then a quick-thinking Caity had alerted lifeguards.

“I got him back to the break and one of the boys came up to me on his board,” Roo said.

“After that the jet skis came and the IRB and paramedics.

“I would have given him another 30 seconds and he would have drowned. It was super full on. I wasn’t thinking about the risks, it was just an adrenaline rush.”

The rescued man’s mother, who was also at the beach, sent Roo a “very generous gift and a card” to thank the Kardinia International College student.

Roo Robinson’s heroic actions helped save the life of a drowning man.

Roo is a lifesaver with Ocean Grove Surf Lifesaving Club, but was off duty that day.

He has been involved since he was eight years old, when he started Nippers.

“I’m really glad I have the training because I don’t think a normal beachgoer would have had the endurance and know how to get them

to calm down,” he said. “It was very lucky I was there. The mother said ‘you saved my son’s life’.

“It didn’t hit me until a day or two after.

Mum said they could have gone home without a son and that’s when it really hit me. I got a bit emotional.”

Roo has some simple, but important, advice

for beachgoers.

“Stay between the flags,” he said. “They are there for a reason and if you do have the time, try and educate yourself on rips as well. The most important thing in that situation is to stay calm. Also learn how to signal for help to be rescued.”

New course reversed for 2023 elite races between Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove and Portarlington Rd (see map for details).

Victoria Police will facilitate a rolling road closure for these races, which reduces the impact of the event. Vehicles will not be able to travel on or cross the route while the rolling road closure passes through. Delays of 15–20 minutes are expected.

All towns will remain open and accessible including Barwon Heads, Ocean Grove, Torquay and Moriac, with the exception of when the race passes through for a maximum of 15–20 minutes.

The course roads must be free of traffic as the race approaches. Therefore, vehicle access on the busier course roads on the Geelong Circuit will be restricted to local access only. With the exception of when the race comes through.

All other traffic will be directed to use alternate routes or side roads.

The rolling road closure will be supported by some fixed road closures to assist in keeping the course roads free of traffic when the race is coming through.

All major intersections remain open, except when the race passes by.

Latrobe Terrace (Princes Hwy) in Geelong and the Geelong Ring Road will remain open at all times during the weekend to ensure north/south traffic movements through the City of Greater Geelong are maintained.

Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times during the event via existing footpaths.

Where roads are closed for short periods, access across roads will be via marshalled course crossing points.

It is advised to allow extra travel time during the weekend in case you experience short delays whilst travelling near the course.

If you are travelling along a course road as a rolling road closure comes through, you will be stopped by the lead police vehicle and asked to park in a safe area on the side of the road.

Once the race has passed the rear police car will inform you that it is safe for you to move off.

This is a recreation ride that takes riders on the same roads that the worlds elite will be racing on. This is not a race and cyclists will be adhering to normal road rules. While this is disappointing news, it’s also a good opportunity to think about what we can all do differently to avoid soft plastics in the first place.

Belmont Dog Park re-opens for our furry friends The Belmont Dog Park has re-opened, with dog owners and their four-legged friends making the most of the opportunity to enjoy reconnecting with the much-loved facility.

We thank the community for being patient as the park underwent significant remediation work.

We were already undertaking routine maintenance works before the series of flood events late last year led to a threemonth closure of the Park.

During this time, flood repair works included pumping water out of the site on three occasions, replacing 350 metres of kikuyu turf, reinstating all gravel paths, repairing the irrigation system, replacing dead trees and shrubs, re-mulching garden beds, reinstating large logs that had floated around the park, planting 200 new native grasses, and the laying new sand in the sand pit, including the installation of large mudstones as a border.

The Belmont Dog Park is one of three dedicated dog parks across the region, including Lara and Corio that provide a fantastic social play space for humans and dogs alike.

By Matt Hewson The Vic Open returns to 13th Beach Golf Links at Barwon Heads this February, with top male, female and all-abilites players competing concurrently.

Australian golfing icon Karrie Webb will headline the women’s field, competing alongside the likes of Grace Kim and Stephanie Kyriacou.

The men’s field includes three of the Australasian Tour PGA’s last six Order of Merit winners in Jake McLeod, Brett Rumford and Matthew Griffin.

Tournament director Nick Dastey said the tournament was shaping up very positively, with players, organisers and spectators alike looking forward to the event.

“Players have had a great break, they’re refreshed and ready to go,” he said.

“The location down at 13th Beach this time of year has a great atmosphere, and I know it’s certainly one of the players’ favourite events.

“Anytime you’re down by the beach on a golf course it always feels pretty good, and both golf courses are top quality and offer something a little bit different.

“And the crowd can be very involved as well; walking the fairways, getting up close and personal with the players. It’s just a great atmosphere. It’s one that all the players make sure they have on their schedule.”

The Vic Open has been held at Barwon Heads since 2013, and in all that time the men’s and women’s events have been played side by side in alternating groups, competing for equal prize money pools of $420,000.

For some years now the All Abilities Championship has also been held alongside the men’s and women’s competitions, and this year Australian All Abilities champion Kipp Popert will make his debut at the Vic Open.

“Back in the day David Greenhill was the brains behind that change to go to a men’s and women’s event, playing alongside each other for the same prize money,” Dastey said.

“And since then we’ve seen a lot of tournaments around the world follow that.

“It just shows what golf can do with equality, and now especially so with the All Abilities section as well.”

The Vic Open runs from February 9-12.

Entry is free, with parking provided at a cost of $10 per car.

Aireys Inlet children had the chance to experience first-hand the feeling of being behind a CFA tanker last week when the Aireys Inlet Fire Brigade held its first community engagement event of 2023.

Local kids had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the tanker and try on the fire brigade’s slip on units as well as learn more about fire safety in the region.

Captain Adam Gilliver and five other CFA members brought the tanker to Aireys Inlet’s popular riverside skatepark, where around 30 enthusiastic kids met their local fireys.

“We just thought we would do something mainly for the kids to come and have a look at, so we got two of our vehicles down at the skatepark,” Mr Gilliver said. “They loved

climbing all over the back of (the tanker), and just being in it sitting behind the wheel.

“We were there for around an hour and a half, including a demonstration of our fire hoses.”

The brigade took the opportunity to engage local parents and encourage membership, as well as spread key safety tips for preparing fire safety plans as the summer heats up.

“We want everyone to be aware that we will be in and around town and ready for what is to challenge us in the future,” he said.

“We just want to make sure people get to know who we are and what our faces look like.”

The brigade will look to host similar sessions each summer to communicate with the community directly.

Historic mansion is Mia’s muse Mia de Rauch’s short film, Barwon Mansion, filmed at Inverleigh’s Barwon Park Mansion, has received a number of laurels, most recently being named a semi-finalist in the Best First Short Film category at Italy’s Venice Independent Film Festival 2023. Mia, who wrote, directed, and produced Barwon Mansion, spoke to Matt Hewson about the film and her creative journey so far.

F

or many years, Mia de Rauch’s focus has been her production and marketing company Flipswitch Media, based in Torquay.

A quick look at the testimonials on Flipswitch’s website – “Mia and her team have helped create content that speaks directly to the desired market and always hits the spot” – suggests her hard work is paying off.

And yet Mia’s most recent success, the short film Barwon Mansion, is a return to the aspirations she had as a young person.

As a child, Mia always wanted to be an actor, which then led into theatre directing and, later on, production.

“I ended up behind the scenes; I started at a production company in Melbourne when I was about 16,” Mia said.

“I just kept going from there and ended up doing a few feature films, producing my own feature film and doing bits and pieces with the TV and film industries.”

Mia studied professional communication at RMIT in Melbourne, focusing on TV, radio and journalism.

This soon led to content creation and the establishment of her own company, Flipswitch.

“We’re a small company based in Torquay, there are four of us at the moment but we work with a lot of local freelancers as well, depending on the project,” she said.

“We’re really about creating video production, copy and video content, Instagram, and anything that businesses need to be able to get their brand and name out there.

“We do marketing strategies for our clients to make sure they’ve got all the right content and they’re using it across their ads and

websites in a good way.”

However, around the beginning of 2020, Mia felt the tug of more personal creative work, inspired by Barwon Park Mansion.

“We were there filming a corporate video for the shire council, and I’ve always loved Barwon Park Mansion,” she said.

“I’ve found the place to have such a warm and protective kind of feel to it, even though it’s a massive bluestone building. It felt beautiful.

“And I had this thought in my mind – “What kind of short film could I make here?”

– when I was driving home.”

The mansion’s previous owner, pioneer and philanthropist Elizabeth Austin, also served as a creative prompt for Mia. “Obviously Elizabeth Austin did a lot of philanthropic work for women and children in the Geelong region, along with starting the Austin hospital,” she said.

“She had that kind of caring nature about

her and that drive to help other people.

“That combined with so many of the stories that I’d been hearing from the news, from people close to me, about the traumas they were going through via domestic violence and emotional violence.

“And it all kind of intertwined from there; could there be a space where you could go to take yourself out of that picture and heal in the way you needed to? And the house could potentially be that.”

Barwon Mansion follows the post-trauma recovery of Claire (Clare Hayes), who needs space to find herself again after finding the strength to leave an unsafe environment.

Barwon Mansion provides that place, giving her the time and space to repair.

“One in four women are experiencing emotional trauma in a domestic setting in Australia; it’s a stat that is not okay,” Mia said.

“I wanted to explore just one example of the amount of work the process of recovery can take after such an experience, how we can help those that have hidden scars.”

Mia said beginning a purely personal project like Barwon Mansion required engaging creative muscles that hadn’t been used in a while.

“It was super weird; I did the project because I wanted to do something different,” she said.

“Most of the stuff I’ve written and produced and directed has been focused on the corporate and small business.

“It’s been 15 years between creative projects, and you have to have thick skin to be able to put yourself forward again.

“But the idea and the script came to me, and I thought, I’ve got the script, now I want to film this, I want to see where it goes.”

Mia praised her cast for what they brought

to the film, both as actors and as storytellers.

“I’d worked with Alice Howell before on a few different corporate videos, and she automatically came to mind when I was writing Patricia and working on that character,” she said.

“She actually had a lot to say in a few of the edits as we were writing it. She and I did a lot of research around the psychology of manipulation and things like that as well, so she had a lot to do with it right from the beginning.

“COVID being COVID, we did Zoom auditions, so I used an online platform to cast (lead actor) Clare (Hayes). She came across amazingly well.

“And she had her own story that she was able to build into the script as well, so it became an incredibly collaborative process.”

Barwon Mansion has done remarkably well so far, chosen as the North Bellarine Film Festival’s closing night film, winning Best Film at the Toronto Feedback Female Film Festival 2022 and receiving an honourable mention at Silk Road Film Awards Cannes 2022.

“It’s just gone so much further than I expected,” Mia said.

“And I enjoy the process a lot more than I thought I would, so I’ll definitely keep going.

I didn’t expect to love directing as much as I did.”

When asked about whether she would continue writing, directing and producing original creative works, Mia simply replied “Yes”, but wouldn’t be drawn on what her next film might be.

“There are a lot of people that I’m hoping to collaborate with in the future,” she said.

“But I think it’s a secret at this stage.”

The Spirit announced the fixture this week with the backing of the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the City of Greater Geelong.

The community engagement opportunities will encourage students in years 9 to 12 to make good choices as road users and reiterate the importance of extensive supervised practice prior to licensing.

Spirit co-captain Kelly Wilson said the team

was proud to represent all of regional Victoria and work closely with the TAC in the build up to this match.

“We as players understand the influence we can have not only in Bendigo but right throughout regional Victoria,” she said.

“We are really looking forward to connecting with the Geelong community and promoting road safety awareness alongside the TAC. “They have such an important message and we take our responsibility very seriously to do everything possible to help deliver it.”

Fatalities on roads in the Barwon South West region increased last year, with 27 lives lost, compared with 24 in 2021.

Regional roads continue to be a concern for road safety authorities in 2023, with 12 lives lost across regional Victoria already this year.

High-speed roads are a major concern, with more than 40% of fatalities occurring in speed zones of 100km/h or more over the past five years.

A bittersweet diagnosis for Tess

By Justin Flynn Tess Swift never contemplated that a family holiday to Thailand would be the beginning of seven years of hell.

The then 20-year-old Ocean Grover was in the final year of her nursing degree in Geelong when she took a family holiday with her mum and sister in 2015 to the Kata Beach area in Southern Thailand.

Soon after arriving home Tess became ill with severe abdominal pain and nausea causing her to be admitted to her local hospital.

Suspecting appendicitis, the doctors removed her appendix, and she was discharged after a few days.

The surgery did not relieve the severe abdominal pain and extreme nausea and over the next three years her health continued to decline.

Tess spent many months in various Victorian hospitals, consulted a range of medical specialists, had multiple tests and surgeries with no definitive answers.

Tess was fitted with a feeding tube, initially through a tube in her nose and then through a tube placed in her stomach. She was unable to work for many years and spent many months in hospital with medical specialists searching for answers as to why a perfectly healthy 20-year-old would suddenly become so unwell.

weeks. It was during this long stay that doctors took more blood tests that would later turn up the answers she had been searching for.

After many years of living with a debilitating chronic illness a letter from the infectious diseases unit at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne arrived in November 2022 outlining that she has tested positive for gnathostomiasis (a rare parasite) endemic in Thailand that had migrated into her abdomen

‘leading to permanent damage in bowel, stomach and colon’.

Although the blood test that would confirm the presence of the parasite was taken in 2019 all tests to confirm the presence of the parasite have to be carried out in Thailand.

Due to the pandemic that effectively shut down international airports, it would be September 2022 before Tess’s blood sample would finally make it to Thailand.

The positive test identified that Tess has Gnathostoma spinigerum, a rare parasitic worm found in Thailand and can live in the body for up to 20 years.

Tess is now undergoing treatment with the aim of killing the parasite, but it is unlikely that she will recover from the significant nerve damage it has caused throughout her body.

Tess is just the 68th person in Australia to be diagnosed with the infection.

Tess, now 28, said the diagnosis was “bittersweet”.

“It’s nice to finally know what happened to me,” she said.

“It’s bittersweet because it means I’m not going to recover. Because I have had it for seven years, it’s done a lot of damage.

“Now it’s just managing the symptoms.

I have a feeding tube and a spinal cord stimulator to manage my pain.

“I was a perfectly healthy 20-year-old when I went to Thailand.”

Tess is now a registered nurse and works as a disability support worker, which she says she “absolutely loves”.

“I feel like I have two full-time jobs,” she said.

Managing my health is a full-time job on its own. We’d never heard of this parasite before the diagnosis. No one could figure out what was wrong with me.

“It got to the point where we never thought we’d get an answer as to why I was so sick.”

Tess said visitors to Thailand should be careful of what they eat as the parasite is picked up via fresh water.

“People most commonly pick it up from eating freshwater fish,” she said.

“You could get it from pork or chicken that might have drunk the parasite.

“But the food in Asia is amazing. It’s a risk you take when you travel.”

YOUR SAY Perspective on duck shooting Let’s get some perspective on the duck shooting comments from Trent Leen of Geelong Field & Game (Independent, ‘Call to end duck hunt’, January 13, 2023).

Professor Richard Kingsford of UNSW has conducted aerial surveys across eastern Australia for 40 years. His results show serious, sustained decline for the duck species that are shot in Victoria. Two species are now on Victoria’s threatened list.

Shooters love to claim Kingsford thinks duck shooting has no effect on sustainability.

That view was based on last-century studies before climate change really hit. But in 2015 Kingsford said: “When you’re down at the bottom of the trough, which is where ducks are … if you have a duck shooting season you are really only going to be shooting adults which will reduce the capacity of the population to bounce back.” His latest survey in October-November 2022 shows that game duck abundance is even lower now than in 2015, despite the record rains we’ve had lately.

As for the conservation work done by Geelong Field & Game, they recently won a taxpayer grant to build 300 duck nesting boxes at a cost of $160 each. Do these boxes have vogue interiors, or are we paying Field & Game for its altruism? Will they continue building nesting boxes when duck shooting is finally banned, or is this really about producing gun fodder?

To argue for the environment whilst supporting those that kill ducks, seriously limits the credibility of his argument.

I suggest that we give up finding excuses that prolong an unwanted duck season, and work together to leave these creatures in peace.

Show me the money If Senator Sarah Henderson thinks the state government should keep Epworth Hospital’s maternity ward open she owes it to her constituents to tell us where the money is coming from.

Epworth Hospital is a private business. Is the senator suggesting that money should be diverted from the public University Hospital to prop up Epworth?

What did the senator do while she was a member of the party in government? Why wasn’t she ahead of this issue?

End duck hunting Matt Hewson’s front page story in the Geelong Independent on Tuesday, January 13 (‘Call to end duck hunt’) sums up the concern that most members of the public

In each case the federal government of

Australia Day is presently a subject of debate, but this should not supress the teaching of our history and heritage after 1788.

When my children attended Torquay Primary School, Australiana Day was held in March each year; which gave teachers time to give lead-up information on history and folklore prior to the event. Now, in this more inclusive time, this could also unclude more information and consideration of our Indigenous people.

On this very popular day everyone, children and teachers, dressed in historical costumes – there were troopers and convicts from early times, noted characters from the days of Cobb & Co, with bushrangers, stockmen, swagmen, gold miners . . . and more than one Ned Kelly amongst them. Also gentlemen in top hats with ladies wearing elegant long skirts.

The school oval became the classroom with various demonstrations given, including blacksmithing, dogs rounding up sheep, gold panning, the art of cooking with camp ovens and the making of damper and billy tea.

Old-time games such as tug-of-war were played, and children tried drawing with charcoal.

Australiana Day is something that schools could embrace today and may include some local achievements as well; thus keeping Australia’s unique and unfolding nationality alive for future generations.

Five vie to be named top citizen Five Golden Plains residents are in the running to be named the shire’s Citizen of the Year next Tuesday.

Smythesdale’s Jaymee-Lin Ellis, Meredith’s Leah Phillips and Bannockburn’s Shona Eland, Melissa Gillett and Stuart McCallum were nominated for the award by fellow community members.

Jaymee-Lin was nominated for her work supporting the Smythesdale Country Market while Leah was nominated for her work as manager of the Meredith Community Centre.

Shona was nominated for her involvement

in the Golden Plains Shire Council CCTV steering committee and the Bannockburn YMCA. Melissa’s efforts to beautify Bannockburn secured her a nomination, while Stuart was nominated for being a long-term protector of the Bannockburn Bush and advocate for environmental issues.

The Citizen of the Year Award is one of four community awards presented by Golden Plains Shire Council each year. The other awards are Senior Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Community Impact Award.

Rokewood’s Heather Butler has been nominated for the Senior Citizen of the Year Award for her volunteering efforts over the past 35 years. Also nominated is Linton’s Jill Wheeler who is president of the Linton and District Historical Society.

Moolap-based GAWS is offering a reduced adoption fee of $29 during its Feline Frenzy promotion this weekend in the hope to rehome as many cats as possible and ease pressure on the shelter, staff, resources and the animals.

GAWS chief executive Helen Cocks said both the shelter and foster care program are inundated with cats needing loving forever homes.

“We have laidback seniors deserving of a relaxing retirement home and young playful cats looking for their forever family. We have affectionate cats, chatty cats and shy cats, and our friendly staff will be on hand to assist in finding the perfect match.”

The Feline Frenzy provides a saving of almost $100 – cat adoption fees are usually $120. Despite the low price, the usual GAWS adoption procedures will apply during the weekend promotion to ensure animals are matched to the right home. All adoption animals are de-sexed, microchipped, vaccinated and flea and worm treated.

We asked Musculoskeletal Podiatrist, Dr David Kavanagh from Foot & Leg Pain Clinics, for some tips: 1. Evaluate footwear. Choose shoes with straps or laces that hold to the feet, especially for prolonged activity, whenever possible. Shoes like thongs and slips-ons can be very stressful to the feet and legs. If you need to wear high heels, try a lower heel or wedges to assist tissue stress.

2. Don’t rely on technological advances in footwear to treat pain & discomfort. The purpose of good footwear is to provide comfort whilst helping to support foot and leg function, not to treat pain or concerns. 3. Be wary of off-the-shelf foot products like mass produced orthotics, innersoles and arch supports to assist pain. Only devices individually prescribed by an experienced musculoskeletal podiatrist should be used to ensure effective outcomes.

4. If you’ve been prescribed surgery or medications, get a second opinion. The latest medical research and natural regenerative treatments make many surgeries, cortisone injections, and even joint replacements avoidable, if caught in time. You should be aware that cortisone injections can delay healing and contribute to further tissue damage in some cases and things like arthroscopes are now considered outdated often with poor

Agatha Christie led a life as intriguing as her work. Historian Lucy Worsley (pictured) discovers the origins of Christie’s storytelling magic through the compelling characters and secrets of the author’s life. After looking at the little girl with the “unsettling imagination” and the troubles of her early adult life, in part three, Worsley examines Christie’s later life and discovers how the turbulent change of the ’30s and ’40s ushered in the golden age of her writing.

Christie penned some of her most famous works during this time, including Murder on the Orient Express. Worsley explores how Christie found happiness and global celebrity, but still remained the anonymous observer.

In this episode, feisty jazz singer Alberta’s (Danielle Pinnock) Prohibition-era expertise comes in handy when Sam and Jay run into complications during a whiskey tasting soiree.

“Innovation drives our business. We now work globally with companies in the USA and Europe, all from a company developed right here at home in Geelong,” Ms Drzewucki said.

As well as an innate motivation to succeed, the HPS Tech team has an extremely solid culture that contributes greatly to the success of the business.

“Our staff culture is really strong and has been built by so many people in the company.

We have fantastic staff retention,” Ms Drzewucki said.

Ms Drzewucki explained that internally, the business generally views itself in relation to a client or project. However, she said that involvement in the Geelong Business Excellence Awards allowed the team to see HPS Tech in relation to other Geelong businesses and the region as a whole.

community involvement,” Ms Drzewucki explained.

“We generally sponsor a few industry events throughout the year, as well as things such as a Christmas food drive, the Biggest Morning Tea, and other initiatives in the Warrnambool and Shepparton region.”

RAW Comedy looking for talent

By Matt Hewson RAW Comedy is putting out the call to aspiring comedians to take the plunge and take part in the Geelong heat of Australia’s largest and most prestigious open mic comedy competition on Saturday, February 11 at Geelong West Town Hall.

Presented by Melbourne International Comedy Festival and LGF Comedy, RAW Comedy 2023 aims to discover the best and brightest new comedic talent in the country.

All entrants need is five minutes of material and a whole lot of chutzpah, and they could see themselves performing in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival

LFG Comedy founder Tim Young, who has experienced participating in RAW Comedy himself, said the experience was an unforgettable one.

“I understand it may be daunting, but I can guarantee that once you get that first laugh it’s one of the best feelings in the world,” he said.

Young said RAW had been a pivotal experience in his life.

“You can expect it’s your first time in front of a big crowd, we usually get pretty good crowds for RAW Comedy,” he said.

“It can be a real gateway to bigger and better things. It’s a chance to meet other people in your area who are doing comedy, and that’s one of the ways we started LGF Comedy.

“I met a bunch of people in a heat years ago in Ballarat. You get to know them, you start doing gigs together.

“It’s a massive opportunity to progress your career or hook into comedy in any way, shape or form that you want.”

The Geelong heat will also feature live

music by Luke Biscan before the show, full dining and bar facilities and will be emceed by comedian Kirsty Webeck.

Young said RAW Comedy nights were always a winner with audiences and participants alike.

“It’s just huge energy and great fun,” he said.

“There’s always massive nervous energy from the competitors; some will be really good and there will be some that aren’t.

“But at the same time you have to acknowledge that they’re getting up and having a crack.

“It’s always a great night, everyone’s always up for a good laugh.”

German chamber ensemble returns to Geelong Germany’s Chamber Philharmonia Cologne will perform at St George’s Church, Queenscliff, and St Mary of the Angels Basilica, Geelong as part of its Australian 2023 tour.

The lauded chamber group returns to Australia after a series of successful European tours to present a program of well-known and much-loved works from classical masters, including Antonio Vivaldi, W.A. Mozart, Camille Saint-Saëns and Niccolo Paganini.

A spokesperson for the ensemble said their motto was “classical music around the world”.

“It is irrelevant for our musicians whether they are playing in a little village church, open air, in a cathedral, big theatre, in their hometown Cologne or in Sydney,” the spokesperson said. “Their enthusiasm to bring music to the people’s life stays the same every time. The objective is simple – we want to inspire as many people as possible through all generations to enjoy classical music.

group Music at the Basilica, said she was excited to see the ensemble return to St Mary’s.

“It’s an amazing group and they play a lovely

range of orchestral music,” Mrs Johnston said.

“They’ve been coming to St Mary’s for around 10 years, but they’ve been coming to Queenscliff for perhaps 25 years.

“They play popular music that people would know, it’s always a very good concert.”

Mrs Johnston said tickets were now only available at the door for the St Mary’s concert.

“They’re very popular and they always draw a large audience of several hundred people,” she said. “Working with Music at the Basilica, we think we’re doing well if we get 200 at a concert and they always get 200-plus. People really look forward to it, I’ve already had a couple of calls asking where people can get tickets.

“At this stage tickets are only available at the door, but people will have no trouble getting a ticket. There’s plenty of room at the Basilica.”

Chamber Philharmonia Cologne will perform at St George’s Church, Queenscliff on Sunday, January 22 and St Mary’s Basilica, Geelong on Tuesday, February 21.

Hyundai Palisade is big and bold

By Alistair Kennedy, Marque Motoring Palisade is the largest model in Hyundai’s SUV range. At a smidgen under five metres, it’s around the same size and price as competitors such as Toyota Kluger and Mazda CX-9.

Launched in late 2020 it was given an upgrade in May 2022 with updated exterior and interior design elements, improved safety and tech features.

Palisade comes in two equipment levels, Elite and Highlander, each with the choice of 3.8-litre petrol FWD or 2.2-litre diesel AWD. Prices range from $65,900 for the Elite petrol 2WD to $79,900 for our test vehicle, the Highlander diesel AWD.

Styling Not only is Palisade a large vehicle but it has styling that accentuates its bulk, starting from the front with a huge version of the parametric grille that’s being progressively rolled out across the Hyundai range.

The grille is flanked by vertically stacked triple LED headlights, together with similarly shaped taillights, that emphasise the height of the Palisade.

The Highlander variant that we tested came with exclusive design touches, including a satin chrome finish for the grille with matching badge and skid plate finishes. There are hidden-type turn signals, body-coloured cladding and exclusive 20-inch wheels with a 15-spoke turbine design.

Engines / transmissions The 3.8-litre petrol V6 generates 217 KW of power at 6000 rpm and 5200 NM of torque with standard unleaded fuel. The 2.2-litre CRDI diesel has less power (147 kW at 3800 rpm) but extra torque (440 NM between 1750

and 2750 revs).

Both have a recently updated eight-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

The diesel AWD uses an active on-demand HTRAC system.

Interior Inside, Palisade comes with a full-width front air vent and a great-looking and feeling four-spoke steering wheel capped off in Highlander with a two-tone finish.

A floating centre console angles up to merge with the dashboard, with a large space below for out-of-sight storage as well as a USB-C and 12V sockets. There’s plenty of additional storage space at the rear of the centre console with two adjustable drink holders and another pair of USB and 12V jacks.

Palisade comes with two seating options, the more conventional 3-3-2 eight-seat family-focused arrangement or an executive 3-2-2 seven-seater with a pair of individual captain chairs in the middle row.

Safety All variants come with seven airbags including one between the front seats, full-length curtain ‘bags, and lap-sash safety belts for all occupants rather than the normal lap-only belt in the centre-rear spot.

Other advanced safety features come with the Hyundai SmartSense system and include Blind Spot View and Collision-Avoidance Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Forward and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Following and Lane Keeping Assist, and Safe Exit Assist.

Summing up Hyundai Palisade is an impressive vehicle that combines the practicality of an SUV while coming close to being car-like in the way it drives.

It’s reasonably priced and comes with plenty of safety and tech equipment.

Palisade comes with Hyundai’s standard five-year, unlimited warranty. Bluelink is also free for the same five-year period but incurs a charge from then onwards.

it felt that it would have no trouble coping with the maximum eight people.

The steering is well-weighted and gives good feedback.

Combined cycle fuel consumption is listed at 10.7 litres per 100 kilometres with the petrol engine and 7.3 L/100km from the diesel. We averaged 8.7 L/100km during our test.

Initially, the large dimensions can be a bit intimidating when you first get into the Palisade but the various assistance features together with its high driving position and excellent visibility help to quickly overcome these concerns.

Also, with its comparatively tight turning circle of 11.8 metres it can handle the average shopping centre with room to spare although the backside tends to jut out.

While other eight-seat SUVs are based on a heavy-duty four-wheel-drive ’ladder frame’ chassis, the Hyundai Palisade is built like a car.

That means its centre of gravity is lower and steering and suspension should be more like the average passenger vehicle. Travelling in stop-start city low-speed conditions, this is the case.

Out on the motorway the Palisade cruises smoothly and quietly with little clue that it is powered by a diesel. Most of our time was spent with either one or two occupants on board but

Lexus IS 2013 - 2021

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Lexus IS is a relatively minor player in the Lexus range of upmarket cars. It can be an excellent used car buy, particularly if it has been maintained by the book and driven sensibly – many are.

Quite a few used ones are sold by Lexus dealers which may make them more expensive, but it’s usually worth any added cost as the dealers will pick and choose which ones they keep, and which ones they move onto other car yards.

Having been relatively sedate in their shape for many years Lexus launched the third generation of its IS sedan range in July, 2013 and went way out in styling. The Lexus IS was designed from the start to have sporty, balanced dynamics and the new shape echoes that.

As well as the upgrades in styling, all models had the option of the F Sport package with an adaptive suspension system. They are well worth hunting down if you like to pedal your cars hard.

The Lexus IS got a major makeover in September, 2020. Its body is 30mm wider thanks to bolder wheel arch flares. The front and rear tracks are 45mm and 50mm wider respectively. It also received a new grille, larger wheels and a technology update.

The bonnet is more sharply raked towards its leading edge and the slimmer headlamps are positioned 43mm lower. The new rear roofline is 15mm lower and the boot-line is 31mm lower.

These changes combined to give the MY21 IS a much squatter and more muscular appearance than before.

Not many are on the used market yet, but it’s worth looking out for them as they are significantly better than their predecessors.

The quality of materials and workmanship makes all Lexus models a delight in which to travel.

Lexus Remote Touch controller (joystick) on the centre console looks after audio, climate control and satellite navigation. Lexus has an excellent Mark Levinson audio system in its upscale vehicles. For example, the IS Sports Luxury has no fewer than 15 speakers carefully

placed around the cabin for optimum sound reproduction.

Interior space is good for a rear-drive car, but this Lexus has less room than a front-wheel-drive of this size. In its earlier generations it’s possibly best to regard it as being a two-plus-two rather than a four-seater if you’re intending to transport adults. Try the back seat for size if adults will be frequently using it. IS models being covered here are better for interior space than the first ones, but check for yourself to be sure.

The boot is a surprisingly good size. Any Japanese car maker who doesn’t provide space for golf clubs is likely to suffer severely in sales.

However, the sporty shape of the rear makes for a relatively slim boot opening and a high loading lip.

The rear seat backs fold almost flat to provide room for longer objects.

In most cases the model number of the Lexus engines refer to their capacity, 200 is a 2.0-litre and so on. The Lexus IS Line is available as the IS 200t with a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, the IS 350 has a 3.5-litre V6 engine.

The 300h petrol-electric hybrid has a four-cylinder petrol 2.5-litre assisted by an electric motor. The ‘300’ indicates the hybrid

provides the sort of performance normally requiring a 3.0-litre unit.

Spare parts and servicing are reasonably priced for a car in this class. Lexus dealers in the earlier years were fairly scarce in rural areas. However, that has significantly changed in recent years as major country cities are now being serviced.

Some senior Toyota technicians are trained in most aspects of the car. Toyota is, of course, the parent company of Lexus.

Insurance is generally moderate in price for a car in this price and social class and we haven’t seen any big variations between the major companies.

What to look for Prior to calling for a professional inspection look over the complete vehicle, preferably with the owner’s handbook in front of you, as these are complex cars. You may weed out obvious duds by doing this.

At the very least, test each of the functions on the stereo, climate-control, windows and door locking.

Listen for squeals from the brake discs, even when you’re braking gently. This could indicate they are near the end of their life, but there

could be other troubles. Go to a brake specialist to have this checked.

Look for damage to the bodywork and the interior trim as it should be close to immaculate in all areas.

We have heard a few complaints about the dash top deteriorating if the car has been out in the sun all the time. One that’s been garaged or parked under a building is a better bet.

Make sure the engine starts virtually instantaneously, idles smoothly and doesn’t hesitate when accelerated.

During your test drive check for anything out of the ordinary in the way the car drives, sounds and feels.

The automatic transmission should operate almost imperceptibly and not hold onto any gears unnecessarily.

Daisy joins Geelong as a coach Melbourne premiership captain Daisy Pearce says an unusual feeling of contentment prompted the end of her trailblazing AFLW career.

Pearce says she retires with a “very full heart” after leading the Demons to the premiership last November and will head into a coaching role with Geelong men’s team.

“There was an assumption that it was ‘win it and I am done, or lose it and I might have to consider going again’,” Pearce told reporters on Wednesday.

“It mostly came down to the fact that I just had this feeling of contentment inside me – that is a new feeling for me as a football player.

“No matter what has happened over the journey, content has never been something that I have felt.

“So as the weeks ticked by post-season, whilst

there was definitely little spurs of thinking about going back-to-back … there was also an element of an overall satisfaction and feeling like that chapter of my life is a full one.”

The 34-year-old, along with Adelaide

and Port Adelaide’s Erin Phillips, was the highest-profile player in the AFLW since its 2017 inception.

Pearce took a season off to give birth to twins but returned to action in 2020 and retires after

captaining Melbourne for six seasons and winning three club champion awards and three All-Australian selections.

Also a respected commentator on the AFL, Pearce will now join the coaching ranks of AFL premiers Geelong.

“I have finished with the emotions of losing a big part of me and something I have loved so much,” Pearce said. “But grateful that I have worked really hard to maintain balance in the rest of my life so I am not in a period of great uncertainty and wondering who I am now.

“I have got wonderful opportunities ahead of me.”

Pearce said spending more time with her young family was also a factor.

“I am still going to be an ambitious person but I want to redirect some of that ... give a bit back to the family,” she said.

“I am not pinning it (retirement) on the need to go and be a good mum because I feel like I have hopefully been able to do that anyway.

“It was just that overall contentedness.

“I am someone that has always given 110 per cent and I didn’t want to be floating around the footy club content with where I am at ... I don’t think I could have quite met my own personal standards.”

Night Pennant play to start in Feb LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers Preparations are well underway for the upcoming Night Pennants of Thursday Triples and Monday Women’s competitions, due to start the week of February 13.

Triples is now in its fourth full year and the number of teams continues to build. Last season saw 22 teams compete across four sections, and entries are now open for the new season.

Teams are enjoying the six- to eight-week seasons compared to the traditional 17-week Saturday competition, and the flexibility of being able to enter as a single player, a team or a club team, and how much easier the process

is to join in.

The success of the Triples framework has now led into a new night competition option of Women’s Doubles, which was piloted at the end of 2022, with 11 teams testing out clubs, travel, format and length of season.

The pilot was hampered by the weather with a number of matches unable to go ahead due to the unusually high instances of heavy rain, but outside of that, the feedback from the pilot was encouraging, so the new season is open with a few small changes, which will help guide the finalised format going forward.

As Tennis Geelong president I am confident that the competition will be successful.

We have had great feedback from the Triples players about what worked and what didn’t

when we introduced the Triples competition.

We waited until the competition was bedded in before setting out for our next play option, and I think that has helped us with the positive response we have had from the players.

We still have some adjustments to make, but we are looking forward to Monday Women’s becoming a staple of Tennis Geelong competition.

Ocean Grove 2 and Drysdale fought out a thrilling tie as Geelong Bowls Region Saturday Pennant resumed on January 14.

The result was unexpected with Drysdale in good form before the break and was predicted to account for the Grovers.

Both sides finished on 61 shots each.

Grove took nine points from the match and Drysdale seven.

Ashley Rees was Drydale’s most prolific winner while Rick Webb won by eight for Ocean Grove.

The result sees Drysdale two points behind Bareena in sixth place on the ladder.

Eastern Park defeated Bareena by nine and is in fourth spot.

Glenn Slattery prevailed for the Parkers by 11 while Ben Wilding made sure two points went Bareena’s way.

Queenscliff took a while to shrug off Bell Post Hill to hold onto third spot on the ladder.

Ben Toner won a rink for Bell Post Hill, but Benjamin Russell and Steve Sullivan made sure the majority of the points headed Queenscliff’s way.

Top side Highton thrashed City of Geelong, almost doubling their score for a 65 to 33 win.

Dan Priddle’s rink of Robin Chambers, Craig Elliott and Adam Lee won big.

Ocean Grove 1 returned to the winner’s list with a hard-fought triumph over Lara.

One rink was tied while Matt Flapper’s rink won by eight and Brad Pavey’s won by seven to give the Grovers 15 of the 16 points on offer.

This week’s match of the round sees Queenscliff (3rd) host Eastern Park (4th).

Drysdale needs to beat top side Highton, Ocean Grove 2 travels to Lara, Bareena hosts Ocean Grove 1 in what should be a good match and Bell Post Hill and City of Geelong meet in what should be a close game.

Clay’s ton wasn’t dreary

By Justin Flynn A magnificent century by Clay Dreary kept Newtown & Chilwell inside the Geelong Cricket Association top four on Saturday, January 13.

Dreary made a stunning 116 from 94 deliveries and bludgeoned 10 fours and five sixes against St Joseph’s.

Newtown & Chilwell made an imposing 7-302 after winning the toss and eagerly batting first at Queen’s Park, Highton.

Tom Meredith made a classy 78 from 99 balls and shared a 150-run partnership with Dreary.

St Joseph’s were superb during their run chase, but fell 36 runs short despite a beautiful 102 from 115 deliveries by opener Luke Ibbs

and 93 from 116 from Jackson Bye. The pair shared a 185-run second wicket partnership.

East Belmont defeated Grovedale at Winter Reserve and moved level on points with the Tigers.

East Belmont batted first with Josh Lacey making 52 out of the final total of 182.

Sam Coutts (4-26) and Clinton Ford (3-29) proved difficult to get away.

However, Grovedale fell for 110 with Michael McNeel (56) getting more than half the runs himself as new-ball pair Dylan Moroney (4-39) and Jack Jenkins (3-11) did the damage.

North Geelong gave its percentage a boost with a huge win against Lara.

Curtly Balshaw (65) continued his fine season with the willow and Sam Hall (63 from

50) played with freedom.

A late 48 not out from 31 balls from Tom Mathieson pushed the final total up to 8/283 with Lara’s Robert Pehar (3-39 from 10 overs) bowling very well.

Lara started disastrously in its run chase and continued to lose wickets regularly, being all out for 67 as Bradley Apps (3-13) helped get rid of the top order.

South Barwon defeated a gutsy Highton by 49 runs.

Nick Butters (85 from 89 balls) and Pat Richards (68) helped the Swans get to 7-285 and Alex Jennings contributed with 42.

Half-centuries from Jack Cook (63) and James Gillard (51) gave Highton a sniff, but three wickets from Clinton Place ensured South Barwon got home.

Anglesea stay on top of the table Anglesea sent a warning to the rest of the Bellarine Peninsula Cricket Association with a seven-wicket win against Ocean Grove on Saturday January 13.

Ocean Grove batted first and was 3-5 with paceman Darcy Elliott doing the early damage.

Elliott bowled eight overs straight and finished with 2-6, which included six maidens.

Dylan Taylor grabbed three wickets of his own with only Mick Thornton (40) offering much resistance with the bat for the Grubbers.

A final total of 9-117 was always going to be hard to defend and when Tyron Norman (44) and Simon Umbers (26) put on 66 for the opening wicket, the game was as good as won for the Seas.

Brett Venables hit an unbeaten 37 to make sure of it for the ladder leaders.

Barrabool held onto second spot after an impressive run chase against Inverleigh.

Lachie Platt (88) and Kobe George (49) were largely responsible for the Kookaburras’ total of 7-172.

Kane Pickering (39), Aaron Pickering (35) and Jack Purcell (33) made sure the Bulls got the points with six wickets and three overs up their sleeve.

Jan Juc returned to the winner’s list with a thrilling win against Armstrong Creek.

Nick Hyden (78 not out) was in top form for the Sharks in their score of 7/152.

At 2-104 the Titans were on track run the total down. Chris Marsiglio (64) played well at the top of the order.

But spinner Tom Kearney (3-19) entered the fray and Jan Juc got home by eight runs.

Tim Frankenburg (70) and Frank Mileto (54) spearheaded Queenscliff’s total of 6/206 against St Leonards.

Mitch Potter (3-34), Jordan Monahan (3-6) and Thomas Kidd (3-10) then made sure the Coutas would win by 97 runs despite a 56-run opening stand between Saints’ pair Troy Griffin (34) and Brian White (24).

Hawks home in a thriller Drysdale replaced Barwon Heads on top of the BPCA A2 Grade ladder with a thrilling win on Saturday January 13.

The competition’s two best sides fought out a high-scoring game at RT Fuller Oval, Barwon Heads, with Drysdale getting home with one wicket and one delivery in hand.

Earlier, Heads’ young gun Charlie Hurst made a brilliant unbeaten 113 from 104 deliveries in his side’s total of 3-200 from 40 overs.

Brent McMinn made 31, but the innings belonged to Hurst, who hit 11 boundaries and two sixes.

Drysdale lost hard-hitting opener Charlie Clode early, but captain Nick Hallam and Jason Malcolm (43) played beautifully until Hallam top edged a ball into his right eye.

Hallam was forced to retire hurt on 63 and was taken to hospital and discharged overnight.

Drysdale looked to be cruising, but a flurry of wickets meant it needed 11 from the final over with one wicket in hand.

Hayden Eddy stepped up to hit the penultimate ball for four over mid-on to give the Hawks a stirring win.

Slow bowlers Matt High (3-30) and Sam Schaller (1-19 from eight overs) delivered for Barwon Heads.

Hallam said he was cleared of any fracture to his eye socket and was feeling sore on Sunday morning, but was pleased with the win. “(It) was a good game in the heat from both sides and a really positive win from our guys,” he said.

“Barwon Heads batted very well and Charlie Hurst’s hundred was a very classy knock.

“I was really proud of our guys to push through and take the game as deep as possible and not to panic.

“We’ve been able to adapt quite well from one-day cricket back to two-day cricket as well as the stop start nature to the first half of the year. “(The) most pleasing aspect is how we took the game deep and how our lower order then brought it home. Great belief.

“Our group is very close and has built a strong culture of backing each other in and being really positive.”

Hallam was particularly happy with 15-year-old seamer Eddy.

“For Hayden Eddy to come in and bowl first change into the wind along with hitting the winning runs in a partnership with Will Ritchie was very exciting for the future,” he said.

For Barwon Heads, the only chink in its armour seems to be the lack of a strike quick bowler.

The batting is deep and powerful and the side will be more suited to the 75-over format where its slow bowlers can operate without any restrictions in overs.
