Local mum leads Mail PERSON OF THE YEAR
2022 By Tyler Wright Throughout 2022 there has been one local who’s stood out for their community advocacy and being a voice for local mums and projects. Sassafras local Belinda Young has been chosen as the ‘Person of the Year’ for campaigning strongly throughout 2022 on key issues such as storm recovery and NBN services. Ms Young was also named Victoria Local Hero in the 2023 Australian of the Year awards for her work in community advocacy and connecting mothers in the Dandenong Ranges through the group she founded in 2015; Mums of the Hills. Ms Young has worked on helping the community heal after the June 2021 storm event by organising trauma informed care for children, bush play groups, women’s rewilding groups, a storm recovery walk and a tree planting morning through Mums of the Hills. With her role of Victoria Local Hero in 2023, Ms Young is planning to push for the NBN to be classified as an essential service in Victo-
