To complete works safely, there will be traffic management, lane closures and speed reductions to 40km/h.

The Pakenham Roads Upgrade project will see three major roads in Pakenham upgraded, including Racecourse Road, McGregor Road and the Princes Freeway.

The project will be delivered in three stages, with upgrades to the Princes Freeway the first to get underway.

Early works for Stage 1 to upgrade the Princes Freeway started in November, with pothole restoration works scheduled to start in early January.

In January, 300 tonnes of asphalt will be spread to repair potholes within the project

Recycle paper, cardboard Cardinia Shire will be hosting a free drop-off event where people can recycle their cardboard boxes and gift-wrapping paper from Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 December.

The Pakenham Waste and Resource Recovery Centre will be open from 9am to 4pm to accept flattened and dry cardboard and gift wrapping paper but ask for as much sticky tape to be removed as possible.

Items such as soft plastic packaging, wet cardboard, plastic gift wrapping, cellophane, ribbons, bows and other Christmas decorations won’t be accepted.

Event participants will be required to show an ID card proving they are a resident of Cardinia Shire.

In Australia, five million tonnes of leftovers, wasted food and packaging will end up in landfill after Christmas.

The council has provided residents with a few tips to reduce Christmas waste.

Choose reusable plates and cutlery if you can – plastic plates and cutlery cannot be recycled and must be disposed of in your kerbside rubbish bin.

Plan your meals and write out shopping lists to avoid unnecessary waste – you may consider opting into council’s residential food and garden waste fortnightly collection service for a fee.

Drop off your old/broken electronic waste (anything with a battery, cord, or plug) at your local transfer station – e-waste cannot be put in kerbside bins.

Hold onto and reuse cardboard boxes, gift bags and wrapping paper for next year, flatten and de-sticky tape and place in your recycling bin (yellow lid), or if you have too many larger boxes visit Cleanaway Lysterfield for free dropoffs.

Reuse tinsel for crafts or donate it to a cause that needs more decorations – tinsel is a type of plastic that cannot be recycled in your kerb-

Seal of approval for roads Road upgrade works are now complete on McGregor Road and Soldiers Road in Rythdale.

The entire length of the roads, spanning from McGregor Road to Hobson Road were sealed as a part of Cardinia Shire’s $25 million Better Local Roads Strategic Sealed Roads project.

“The Strategic Sealed Roads project creates strategic links to existing sealed roads in locations where they are needed most, such as McGregor and Soldiers Roads, which are hightraffic areas,” Cardinia councillor Kaye Cameron said.

“Sealing these roads should reduce traffic on the local unsealed road network and improve comfort and service level for drivers.”

Completed works on the roads includes road pavement construction, kerb and channel construction, drainage works and signage and guardrails and line markings.

More than 1500 tonnes of recycled glass were used in the crushed rock pavement along McGregor and Soldiers Roads, decreasing the amount of quarried materials required in the pavement.

Councillor Cameron said the finished pro-

ject would play a significant part in building a better Cardinia Shire.

Wildlife Cardinia Council is also trialling wildlife sensitive lighting in selected locations, including McGregor and Soldiers Roads.

The trial will aim to reduce the impact of artificial lighting on wildlife native to the area such as the Crescent Honeyeater, Gould’s wattle bat and the Australian Painted Lady Butterfly.

The majority of the shire’s current lights have cool-white LED globes, and while they

can enhance human sight and perceptions of safety and security, the light can have negative effects on humans and wildlife.

New wildlife sensitive lighting which will be implemented by the council will use warm, amber-coloured LED globes with reduced blue-white light to maintain natural bodily processes. The technology is similar to turning on a blue-light filter on a smartphone.

Warm, amber coloured lights have been found to improve and regulate sleep, behaviour, feeding, growth, development and reproduction in wildlife.

A quick drive around the estates on any given night will yield results, however, there’s no shortage of Facebook pages and websites which list where to find the best displays.

There are some crackers in Lakeside, as well as along Balmoral Way, so before Christmas Day, spend some time with family or friends and walk or drive around the area.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus worked to extinguish the blaze, before declaring it under control almost 40 minutes later, at 5.16am.

The scene was declared safe at 5.52am, with crews remaining on scene blacking out and mopping up.

One person was assessed at the scene according to Ambulance Victoria, but no treatment or transport was required for them.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined by fire investigators.

Plumes of smoke could be seen in Berwick early on Sunday morning, after a house caught fire in Hackberry Place, in between Soldiers Road and Grices Road.

Eight CFA vehicles responded to reports of a housefire at 4.38am on Sunday 18 December, with Fire Rescue Victoria, Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria crews also in attendance.

Upon arrival, crews found a two-storey brick dwelling with the top floor engulfed with flames, according to a CFA spokesperson.

Five decades of service After 50 years of service to Catholic education, Ms Maria Kirkwood, chief executive and director of Catholic education in the Diocese of Sale will retire on 23 December.

Ms Kirkwood has held her current role with Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL) since 2012, leading 38 Catholic primary and five Catholic secondary schools in the diocese which spans from the outer Melbourne suburbs of Narre Warren and Cranbourne throughout Gippsland to Orbost in the east of Victoria.

Prior to this, Ms Kirkwood held various executive positions with the then Catholic Education Office Melbourne, now Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS), as well as principalship, leadership and teaching positions at Catholic schools in Victoria.

A thank you mass and dinner were held to bring together parish clergy, DOSCEL board directors, and education leaders to honour Ms Kirkwood who has been a champion of innovation and change in Catholic education.

Video messages from two former Bishops of Sale, Archbishop Christopher Prowse and Archbishop Patrick O’Regan were played during the evening along with messages from many Catholic primary and secondary schools.

Speaking at the dinner, Bishop of Sale, Most Reverend Greg Bennet, said Catholic school communities throughout the diocese had benefitted enormously from Maria’s giftedness as an educator, her competence as an administrator and her dynamism as a faith leader.

“Maria’s collaboration with the previous Bishops of Sale, in preparing an innovative and creative way of governing Catholic education in the Diocese of Sale, has now been replicated in the other three dioceses in Victoria,” Reverend Bennet said.

“Her contribution to the process of incorporation and to ensuring that schools and their communities are appropriately funded and supported by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) is acknowledged and respected by the education community.”

Her commitment to Catholic education has inspired colleagues, Parish Priests, clergy, staff of the Catholic Education office, school personnel and enriched the lives of all those with whom she has worked over many years.

Reflecting on five decades in Catholic education, Ms Kirkwood said her time in the Diocese of Sale was the happiest personally, and the most fulfilling professionally.

“The role of director has been enormously supported and valued by the Bishop and clergy, our dynamic board of directors and committee members, and the many talented teams and individuals in our schools and Catholic education office,” Ms Kirkwood said.

Ms Kirkwood said she has been asked on numerous occasions over the years to talk

about her ‘career’ but stated, “I don’t believe I have had a career, what I have had is a life in which my work was a major part and the vast majority of that work-life has been with Catholic education and the Catholic Church more broadly”.

Reflecting on leadership opportunities over the years, Ms Kirkwood’s said she learned to ignore negative voices about what women can and cannot do, having been told on several occasions not to apply for positions to which she was ultimately appointed.

Ms Kirkwood said it had been a great pleasure to work with so many passionate and committed leaders and staff throughout her working life.

“My sincere thanks to everyone I have had the privilege to work with.

“Our Catholic schools have such a strong

and assured future because of the passionate leaders and staff and the wonderful work they do every day.”

Following her last day on 23 December, Mr Paul Velten will commence in the role as chief executive/director of Catholic education from December 24.

Mr Velten is known to many in the diocese through his current work as a member of the DOSCEL executive team in the role of chief finance, information and infrastructure officer.

He has held a number of roles within the Catholic Church and its agencies in the Diocese of Sale and the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Mr Velten is also a member of several committees of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria (CECV) and a board member of the Catholic Development Fund Archdiocese of Melbourne.

This includes the removal of the level crossings at Racecourse Road, McGregor Road and Main Street, two new train stations in Pakenham and upgrades to Healesville-Kooweerup Road between Southeast Boulevard/Livestock Way and Manks Road.

Together, authorities hope these projects will create a more efficient transport network throughout Pakenham.

Fire prompts investigation

A fire at an unoccupied home in Hampton Park last week has caught the attention of police.

The Hampton Park Fire Brigade responded to the incident just before midnight on Thursday 15 December on Hampton Drive.

“Crews arrived to find significant smoke issuing from the roof. Initial internal searches were conducted and fortunately no one was inside and the property was abandoned,” the brigade said on its Facebook page.

“With help from our supporting crews we were able to contain the spread and extinguish the fire quickly, ensuring there were no injuries or risk to surrounding properties.”

An arson chemist attended the property on Friday 16 December to inspect the scene. Police confirmed on Tuesday 20 December that the investigation into the cause remains ongoing.

Melbourne Demons AFLW fans got up close and personal with the 2022 Premiership Cup at Bunjil Place on Monday 19 December.

The Dees won their maiden premiership in late November in a nail-biter against Brisbane, coming from behind to vanquish the Lions on their home ground.

General manager of Melbourne’s AFLW program, Marcus Wagner said bringing the cup to Bunjil Place was a special occasion.

“Casey is home for our AFLW program, and the local community has shown immense support since the beginning of the competition – particularly this year, with back-to-back seasons,” Mr Wagner said.

“We love our connection with the City of Casey and look forward to supporting each other in the years to come.”

The AFLW side play home games at Casey Fields while the men’s side train there during the week.

The VFL and VFLW affiliated sides, the Casey Demons, are also based at Casey Fields.

Freeway ramps delay

By Eleanor Wilson Berwick MP Brad Battin will be forced to work from Melbourne’s CBD for the indefinite future, after Parliament was unable to find him an appropriate office in his electorate.

Mr Battin is currently working from temporary parliamentary offices in St Andrews Place, Melbourne, while Parliament Victoria’s Department of Parliamentary Services continues its search for a permanent location in his South East seat.

Mr Battin, who has served the Gembrook district since 2010, moved out of his office in Officer last week after he was officially declared as the member for Berwick.

The Gembrook District was abolished as part of the 2021 redistribution, with constituents divided into the new seats of Pakenham and Berwick.

The Officer office space has now been occupied by new Pakenham MP Emma Vulin.

Despite the move, Mr Battin assured the community he will still be readily available to service the community.

“I do find it frustrating not being in my electorate, the residents have voted for me to represent them and they expect me to be there for that representation,” he said.

To combat the issue, the shadow minister said he is planning to collaborate with local cafes and community hubs in Berwick to remain accessible to the community until a local office is found.

“From January we will set up a couple of locations in the electorate where we’ll be at the same time each week, for those people who want to pop in for a discussion.

“I’ll spend more time in cafes in Berwick in the next couple of months then I will in my Melbourne office.”

Commuters are still waiting for freeway entrance ramps to open, despite project timelines stating they would be ready to use in late 2022.

Construction of new freeway ramps (inbound and outbound) at Officer South Road, to create new freeway interchange, have been underway all year.

In October, the Department of Transport said the ramps were “expected to open in late-2022”. On the Cardinia Shire Council website, it says “the Officer South Road freeway ramps will be open by late December 2022”.

A Department of Transport spokesperson told Star News on 21 December additional works were taking place on safety barriers near the Officer South Road ramps to the Monash Freeway, which must be completed before remaining asphalt and linemarking works can be undertaken to then open these ramps safely.

“We’re installing new safety barriers around these on-ramps, before completing the final asphalt and linemarking work, so that we can ensure journeys on and around the new ramps are safe and reliable,” they said.

“We will never compromise on safety, and will open these freeway entrances as soon as it is safe to do so.”

The Department of Transport will continue to work with Major Road Projects Victoria and the developers of the nearby estate through early 2023 to ensure that these ramps are safe to open as soon as possible.

Oakgrove marks 25 years

By Mary Amalraj* It was a magical day for Oakgrove Community Centre as we celebrated our 25th anniversary on Sunday 4 December which seemed to be a fantastic event with a great turnout.

Community members were treated to various market stalls, performing groups, face painting, pony rides, jumping castle, door prizes, a sausage sizzle and food vans.

A Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony were performed by individuals from Bunurong Country as a sign of respect for Traditional Custodians past and present.

Oakgrove welcomed Holt MP Cassandra Fernando and Bruce MP Julian Hill as special guests.

The event paved a way to meet new community members and listen to their wants and needs.

The Oakgrove Community is very much multicultural from diverse backgrounds and age groups, so we would like to welcome everyone to the centre where you can always feel inclusive and safe.

As we age, our bones naturally lose mass and therefore become more prone to certain osteal (bone-related) conditions. One of the most common problems experienced by older people is a condition called osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is not a rare disease by any stretch. In fact, approximately 1.2 million Australians have an osteoporosis diagnosis, with a further 6.3 million experiencing low bone density.

The disease aids the deterioration of bone tissue, causing a decrease in bone mass and a higher risk of fracture and pain. It most commonly affects over 50s but has been known to be present in younger populations too.

As with many diseases, early diagnosis and treatment helps you to manage the disease more effectively, maximising quality of life and minimising discomfort.

Unfortunately, osteoporosis is known as a ‘silent disease’. Many people don’t experience early symptoms or even realise they have the condition until after their first fracture. In some cases, the fracture itself can cause the disease.

It is therefore imperative that you remain proactive in understanding the subtle signs of osteoporosis and go for screening regardless of whether you have symptoms or not.

What are the signs?

The most obvious sign of osteoporosis is a fracture. This might occur from simply knocking yourself on a hard surface or tripping over. It could be that you’ve even had a fracture without realising it and experience discomfort and pain without understanding the root cause.

Another subtler sign of osteoporosis is a change in posture or a shortening in height.

Therefore, measuring yourself regularly and assessing your posture in the mirror is helpful.

If a family member mentions you’re walking or standing differently, it’s important that you listen to them and take action.

A vitamin D deficiency is also a sign that you might have osteoporosis. If you have been told by a health professional to take vitamin D supplements, this should act as a warning sign that you are at higher risk of developing the condition.

Casey sticks with tradition

By Eleanor Wilson The City of Casey will continue to hold its Australia Day citizenship ceremony on 26 January, despite Federal Government giving local councils flexibility to choose which day they hold the ceremonies.

On Friday, 16 December, Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles announced local councils could hold Australia Day citizenship ceremonies between 23 and 29 January.

The change overrides a controversial rule by the former Morrison Government, which meant any council that didn’t hold ceremonies on January 26 could be stripped of their right to hold citizenship events, as a number of Melbourne local governments refused to recognise the national holiday.

Despite the changes made available to councils, City of Casey’s director community life Callum Pattie confirmed its citizenship ceremonies would go ahead on the public holiday.

“We are currently reviewing and developing a Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) that will be informed by extensive consultation with the local Indigenous community, as well as broader Casey community,” he said.

“The RAP will inform council’s position on this, and all other related matters.”

In 2017, Yarra and Darebin councils were stripped of their power to hold citizenship ceremonies after both councils voted not to hold the ceremonies on 26 January, in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

The City of Casey will continue to hold citizenship ceremonies on 26 January, despite changes in legislation. 203538 Both councils would have their ability to hold the ceremonies restored, Mr Giles said.

Mr Giles said his government was “removing red tape” around the ceremonies, although he added it remained a “strong expectation” they were held on 26 January.

“Australian citizenship is an important common bond for all Australians, whether by birth or by choice, and lies at the heart of a unified, cohesive and inclusive Australia,” he said.

“The government’s priority is to ensure that, where people have made the choice to become Australian citizens, they are afforded that opportunity in their own communities, with friends and family, in a timely way.”

The federal government says there are less than 100,000 citizenship applications on hand for the first time in five years.

Two arrested following foray Detectives from the Dandenong-based Youth Gang Team have arrested and charged two teenagers as part of Operation Alliance, following a serious assault at a Hallam fast food restaurant earlier this month.

Detectives executed two warrants in Narre Warren South and Lynbrook on Wednesday 14 and Monday 19 December respectively, in relation to an incident on Tuesday 6 December.

Police will allege the males were part of a group of youths who boarded a Narre Warren bus and sat behind a 16-year-old boy about 3.45pm on Tuesday 6 December.

Investigators have been told the victim overheard the youths talking about attacking him so when the bus stopped near the corner of Hallam Road and Princes Highway, he ran and was chased by the youths.

The boy sought refuge at a nearby fastfood outlet, jumping over the front counter to hide in the back.

However the group pursued and cornered the victim before allegedly punching and kicking him to the ground behind the counter, police said.

The youths allegedly continued to beat the victim while on the ground until workers intervened and chased the offenders from the store. The 16-year-old victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An 18-year-old Narre Warren South man was arrested and charged with affray, assault in company and unlawful assault. He was bailed to appear before the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 25 May 2023.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested and charged with affray, assault in company, unlawful assault, and commit an indictable offence while on bail. He has been bailed to appear before a children’s court at a later date.

An 18-year-old from Narre Warren South and a 16-year-old were arrested on Monday 19 December following a frightening incident at a fast-food outlet in Hallam.

Police continue to investigate the assault and are searching for several other offenders.

In the year leading up to the start of December, Operation Alliance has made more than 1350 arrests, resulting in almost 3000 charges being laid.

Since the operation commenced in September 2020, the overall number of youth gang members has reduced by 103 people.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Nossal reaching new heights

By Eleanor Wilson Despite disruptions to classroom learning born out of the Covid pandemic, Nossal High School has recorded some of its best VCE results since the school was established 13 years ago.

The select entry government school is often regarded as one of the best in the state, yet its 2021 and 2022 VCE results show it is reaching new heights.

The Berwick school recorded a median ATAR of 93.6 and a median study score of 36 the latter being the best in its history, according to principal Roger Page.

“Our students will always perform well, we’re a select entry school so they come in with high levels of aspiration and capability.

But last year we received our best results in our 13-year history and this year was our best median study score… and these are the kids that have been most impacted by Covid.”

While the students’ pandemic resilient performance may be surprising to many, Mr Page said the Berwick school was acquainting students with an online learning model before Covid was a blip on the radar.

“I’m very pleased [with the results] but not really surprised, because the kids are very well motivated and prepared for online learning,” he said.

“Prior to Covid lockdown, about five or six years ago we began to establish a set of digital days for the students to complete their learning online.

“The concept for that came from research we were hearing which showed that students were not aptly prepared for university, which takes on more of an online learning approach with online lectures and so forth.

“We wanted to start to prepare our students beyond their secondary education.

“Our focus is not just about the ATAR score, it’s about preparing our students for university and the outside world, broadening their horizons and ensuring they become better citizens as well.”

Of the 2022 Nossal cohort, 11 students achieved an ATAR score of 90 or above, including Shashini Kandamulla, who woke up on Monday 12 December to a score of 99.15.

“I was so nervous to click that button, but I did it because my Dad was standing right behind me,” she said.

“I think my parents were more nervous than I was because they work so hard to support me and my education so there was a lot riding on it for them too.

“I was aiming for above 99 so I was really happy and so relieved to see my score and know all the hard work paid off.”

The Cranbourne resident said she took a bus, two trains and walked a kilometre on foot to get to and from school each day, but maintains the commute was worth it to attend the school.

Shashini hopes to study medicine at Monash University, but dentistry and engineering are also potential career paths for her.

Fellow student Harejen Pasupathidasan said he wasn’t overly confident walking out of his exams, but was pleasantly surprised to discover he had obtained a score of 99.10.

He said subject choice was an important contributor to his final ATAR score.

“Try not to focus on the subjects people say will get you a high score, just do the subjects you enjoy. For me, the subjects I really liked turned out to be my highest scoring subjects.”

Like Shashini, Harejen hopes to study medicine at Monash University, but the pair still need to undertake a series of interviews before they find out if they have been accepted into the course.

Dog adoption fees slashed

“We can offer a foster-to-adopt situation as well, where you bring them home, and it’s not set in stone.”

“She was surrendered to us because the owners couldn’t look after her anymore and I fell in love with her,” she said.

“A dog always needs a home and we’re always going to have dogs in shelters because there are so many people buying puppies now.

“Shelter dogs, they give you love that you can’t really explain.

“I think because some of them have been hard done by, they’ve got that resilience and they do want to show you that love that a puppy may not have the capacity for.”

Elise Bennell, animal care team leader at RSPCA Peninsula in Pearcedale, believes summer holidays are ideal for welcoming a new four-legged family member, with more people around to help shoulder the load.

It comes at a critical time for the animal rescue industry, as demand for their services has soared in recent years, in part due to the pandemic and cost of living pressures.

“We don’t hold as many dogs as Burwood does but we’re pretty much at capacity,” Ms Bennell said.

“We’re trying to get them out so that we can bring more in.

“I’d say Covid-19 has been a big factor.

“We’re seeing a lot of the one-to-two year olds come in now that haven’t been socialised, are fearful of strangers, that type of thing. So when they come in here we have to start from scratch and then get people who are willing to take them on as well.”

All available dogs have been desexed, microchipped, and health and behaviour checked by the RSPCA, but there are still a number of factors that must be considered before making the decision to adopt, including whether the dog and the breed suits your household.

Ms Bennell issued a reminder that their team is available to assist with the settling-in process.

“Be prepared to call the trainer out as well if you do need some help,” she said.

“We’re always willing to call and check-up and see how you’re going.

How has 2022 been for you and your business?

Did you achieve everything you had set out to at the beginning of the year or did the scourge of Covid-19 or any other external factors derail your plans?

One thing’s for sure, New Year’s Eve resolutions don’t cut it.

Statistics show that your chance of success in achieving a New Year’s resolution is around 10 per cent, i.e. there’s a 90 per cent chance of missing it!

In previous articles we have discussed the value in setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific) goals and as well as the importance of having an ‘accountability partner’ (someone that will hold you accountable to your defined objective(s)), so as we near the end of the year, this is the perfect time to be thinking about your goals for 2023 so that you can hit the road running next year.

How do you go about setting your goals?

People do this in different ways, but there are some approaches that will significantly improve success, so let’s discuss these using the SMART principle: Specific There is no doubt that the better defined the goal, the more likely you are to hit it. ‘Improving profitability’ is nowhere near specific enough since quite different approaches will be required in making a 5 per cent profit as opposed to 50 per cent, so a defined number or percentage should be specified.

Set your 2023 business goals now!

Measurable The more specific your target, the easier it will be to measure it. The benefit in doing this is that you can review your progress periodically to see if you are on track. For example, if your target is to make an annual profit of $60,000, then on average you would need to make

$5000 each month to hit the target. There is an important point to be made here, when tracking financial data, determine first if there is a level of seasonality to your income so that you can vary your periodic expectations accordingly by month. Retail stores should expect much higher income in December and Janu-

ary whereas the construction and manufacturing sectors should typically expect less in these months and hence the expectations on other months should allow for this accordingly.

Achievable A great way to determine if a particular goal is attainable is to look at the results for the previous year. It was Confucius (551 BC – 479 BC) who said: “Study the past if you would define the future” and so by looking at what happened previously (and understanding why), your ability to predict results for the coming year will be greatly enhanced. For example, if your business turned over $1m last year, then a target of $3m may well be bordering on unrealistic, but by thinking about what is possible and how, you should be able to define what a reasonable increase might be.

Relevant Only set goals that you need and are prepared to work towards. There is no point in setting goals that you neither believe in nor will provide a measurable benefit for your business.

This is especially true if you will be delegating achievement of a goal to another staff member. It is essential that they have responsibility for achieving it and are committed to what they see as a realistic goal.

Time-specific This is an element that is often overlooked in goal-setting but as for the ‘Specific’ item above, it is very important to be completely unambiguous about the actual deadline. A goal to be achieved “by the end of the year” is simply not specific enough since it is not clear whether this is financial or calendar year and if the latter, before Christmas or by 31 December, so be precise about the end date.

Hospital works underway

By Marcus Uhe Construction is ramping up on the Cranbourne Community Hospital.

When complete, the hospital will provide a range of day services intended to ease the pressure on major hospitals such as Casey Hospital and expanding on services currently offered at Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre.

“Led by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Lendlease Build-

ing, major construction on the multi-milliondollar Cranbourne Community Hospital is underway,” a Department of Health Spokesperson said.

“Construction on the Cranbourne Community Hospital is expected to be completed in 2024.”

The Balla Balla Community Centre has been forced to make way for the hospital - one of 10 to be built across the state - but City of Casey manager growth and investment, Kath-

ryn Seirlis said none of the other facilities in the precinct would be impacted by the construction.

“The Cranbourne Community Hospital will be a great addition to the Casey Complex as it will provide much-needed services for the local community,” Ms Seirlis said. “No works are proposed to occur to the buildings of surrounding facilities, including Cranbourne Library and Casey Stadium at this point.

“The City of Casey has, and will be work-

ing closely with, the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) to ensure that construction impacts to surrounding facilities (including car parking) and their users are minimal.”

Sutton, one of the preeminent players in the competition – and a Team of the Year member of the last two seasons – has quietly gone about his business while the spotlight has pointed elsewhere.

This was only the fifth time he had batted in nine rounds, and this was his first visit to the middle since making 11 against Carlisle Park in early November!

But on Saturday, wow-wee…didn’t he remind us all of what he’s capable of.

Sutton is not just a talented cricketer; he seems to do it when it matters most and the Seagulls needed him on Saturday when he walked to the crease after Tom Hussey (0) and Cal O’Hare (0) had both blobbed up and the score was 2/5.

Fast-forward 94 balls, and just over two hours later, and Sutton had smashed 13 fours and two sixes on a wonderful day at the crease.

He saw off Josh Lownds (9) and Tyler Evans (9) before sharing a 71-run partnership with Aaron Avery (29) …before things got really interesting with Brad Butler (66 not out).

The pair put on 91 at record-setting pace, with Butler continuing his outstanding hardhitting form of late.

In his four most recent visits he’s compiled scores of 37, 47, 73 and 66, and doesn’t he do it quickly!

Saturday’s 66, off just 38 balls, was littered with five boundaries and three towering sixes.

The Bullants were never a chance in reply, but Nick McLennan (47) continued his resurgence and Chathura Imbulagoda (37), Ash Smith (23), Sam McDavitt (21) and Cooper Pursell (21) all got starts against one of the best bowling attacks going around.

The pick of that attack was Kallan BraidBall (4/29 off 8), while O’Hare (2/27) broke the promising partnership of 79 between Imbulagoda and McLennan to remove any threat of an unlikely Bullants victory.

Tooradin heads to Carlisle Park after the break, while the Bullants host Pakenham in what’s sure to be a hotly-contested clash at Starling Road.

The only CCCA Premier Division team to chase runs on the weekend and win was Kooweerup (6/155) who overcame some early hiccups to edge past Cardinia (8/153) at Gunton Oval.

The Demons were desperate to turn their form around, after losing three of their last four matches, and in a promising sign for the future threw Mitch Davey the new rock.

Davey was one of the most talented young quicks in the region, but injury not only prevented him from showing his best, but from bowling a ball at all.

His return to the crease over the last fortnight is great reward for persistence and a huge boost for the Demons moving forward.

Davey (1/20) got the ball rolling for the Demons, trapping the out-of-form Morteza Ali (3) in front – who has now made just 60 runs from seven visits to the middle after opening his season with an even 50.

Alex Nooy (31) and Bradey Welsh (32) then consolidated for the Bulls before Jess Mathers (4/21 off 8) ripped the heart out of the Bulls top-to-middle order.

Mathers was back to grand final-winning best, rocking the castle of Nooy before having Bulls’ skipper Jake Prosser (4) caught by Steven Dillon.

Mathers then had Travis Wheller (3) dismissed via an LBW shout, before capping off a brilliant spell of bowling by knocking over the stumps of Welsh.

Nathan Volpe (43 not out) then made double-figures for the sixth consecutive occasion, sharing a vital 48-run stand with Dean Henwood (15) to give the Bulls a defendable target.

The Bulls were 7/99 at one stage and did well to post a competitive score.

Dylan Sutton was in a bludgeoning mood on Saturday, making 133 off just 94 balls against Officer. 313250 Miller (1) and Luke McMaster (16) all back in the sheds with just 35 runs on the board.

Davey (41) and Gamini Kumara (51 not out) then partook in a vital 56-run partnership that stopped the Bulls in their tracks.

Henwood (2/21 off 8) then stood tall for the Bulls, trapping both Davey and Mathers (1) in front before Matt Welsh (1/20) had Demons’ skipper Michael Giles (11) caught by Wheller.

The Demons were 6/113, still requiring 41 runs for victory, and on the brink of losing a third game on the trot.

Kumara, a big-name recruit who had made just one score over 14 (63) this season, showed his importance to the Demons line-up with a steadying knock that decided the outcome of the match.

Alongside Dillon (16 not out), Kumara hit three fours and a six to share in an unbeaten 42-run partnership that put the Demons’ season back on track.

Henwood and Josh Grogan (2/26) – who removed the two big guns Bright and McMaster – were the pick of the Bulls’ trundlers.

Both teams take on last-start winners after Christmas, with the Demons heading to Clyde and the Bulls looking to bounce back to the winners list against Merinda Park at Donnelly Reserve.

A stylish half-century from skipper Brett Reid (75) has breathed new life into the season of Clyde (4/210), who caused the upset of the season against Pakenham (8/200) at Ramlegh Reserve.

Anytime the bottom team in the competition rolls the undefeated ladder-leaders it should be big news, but the Cougars aren’t your run-of-the-mill cellar-dwellers.

They have some real talent running through their list, with a fair proportion of that talent still yet to fire.

With the Cougars still on the bottom of the ladder, but just one game and percentage behind fourth-placed Cardinia, it makes for a fascinating last five rounds of the season.

Pakenham, Tooradin and Kooweerup look safe, but any one of the five remaining sides could realistically feature in the 2022/23 finals series.

Reid and Trevor Bauer (52) set the scene for the hosts, sharing a 112-run stand that built confidence within a group that had not tasted success for two months.

Fortunately for Bauer and Reid, James North (41 not out) and Zac Davis (21 not out) decided to cash in on the great start, coming together for an unbroken 63-run stand that gave the Lions something to think about, despite making 1/247 the last time the two sides met!

The Lions had their chances, with partnerships of 36, 33, 30 and 35 being built, but the Cougars kept themselves in the hunt by not allowing the Lions to build a significant stand.

Opener Jack Anning (42) continued his push to being the most improved player in the competition, while the reliable Rob Elston (46) gave the Lions hope until the latter part

Luck at last! Merinda Park skipper Andrew Martin was finally on the right side of a close one against Carlisle Park on Saturday. 311881 of their innings.

Nera Wanniarachchi claimed three wickets for the Cougars, while Max Adams and Nick Miles made crucial breakthroughs at exactly the right time for the winners.

The Cougars host Kooweerup first-up after Christmas, while the Lions make the short trip to Officer.

And Merinda Park (5/199) has denied Carlisle Park (7/194) a third-consecutive victory in a thrilling contest at Donnelly Reserve.

The Cobras have been unlucky in a couple of close finishes this season, and with a bit of luck could be well entrenched in the top four.

The Cobras best player of the last decade, Dan McCalman (70 not out), guided the hosts through a roller-coaster 40-over journey, sharing partnerships with Cambell Bryan (53) and Sas Perera (29) along the way.

After a rusty start to the season, ‘Danners’ has regained his shine with knocks of 41, 70, 66, 28 and 70 in his last five innings.

McCalman has made 70 in the Cobras last two victories to rubber-stamp his huge importance to his side.

Not surprisingly the talented Vikings made a good fist of their reply, with batting something they’re much better at than filling out their online scorecards.

At the time of going to press, there was no batting or bowling information provided by the Vikings from the weekend.

Josh Phillips (2/33) was the main protagonist for the Cougars with the ball, while the economical spell of skipper Andy Martin (8-01-28) should not be underestimated in such a tight contest. The Vikings now have three consecutive games at home after Christmas, with Tooradin, Officer and Pakenham on the horizon, while the Cobras will break into the topfour if they can douse Cardinia’s fire at Donnelly Reserve.

Steenholdt sets hot pace

By Dean Thompson Nyora Raceway has held its last event before Christmas on Saturday night and families and fans were entertained on track with some great racing.

There were also Christmas shenanigans from the Grinch and Santa Claus whilst one lucky fan was given a bicycle from Nyora Raceway Inc. In racing the main events were the visiting Sprintcars and the Junior Sedan Promotional Association series round.

The Sprintcars were fast, very fast, and the eventual winner Shane Steenholdt scorched around the track in 13.5 seconds during the final.

Steenholdt won the feature event that originally ran 17 laps without stoppage from Steven Horton, Alistair Bastian, Adam Greenwood, and Peter Laity.

Junior Sedan competition in the Top Star and New Star Junior Sedan series events for Speedway Sedan Australian Junior 1500cc cars was frenetic, especially in the Top Stars.

Alexandra members Bree Simpson, River Paterson and his brother Linken, won the three heat races in races that had the fastest kids getting around mostly in the low 18-second times.

In the final the Paterson brothers went at it head-to-head at the front after starting from the front row.

Younger brother River, 14, held the lead for most of the race before Linken passed his brother on the last lap to take the win with Bree Simpson in third spot.

Continuing his dominance of the New Star class so far this season Cruz Farrell from Pakenham took his third successive feature win in the class.

He has won both events at Nyora so far this season and the first show at Alexandra last

Braiden Webster came out on top at Nyora Raceway on Saturday night.

Shane Steenholdt scorched around Nyora in under 14 seconds on Saturday night.

Farrell won the three qualifying races and then the final where Tyson Heaphy finished in second place with James Peacock third.

Junior competition continued into the Junior Standard Saloon class also.

Nyora members Harry Cecil from Poowong - who won two heats - and Chase Ingram from Warragul won another.

Cecil was given a run for the trophy in the final from Beau Stuchbery and Jack Braz.

Eventually Cecil won from Stuchbery, Braz, Ingram, and Cooper Joynson.

Further Junior Sedan competition came from the Victorian Speedway Council Junior 1200cc Sedan class.

Braiden Webster from Wonthaggi and Bryce Leek took heat race victories before Webster picked up the win from Leek, Ella Sheedy, Xander Baxter and Chase Doherty.

Trish Dike, a former two-time Victorian champion in Ladies Standard Saloons, and the current back-to-back champion Ally Morrison, then shared a heat race each before going head-to-head in the final.

A great battle lasted 10 laps when the che-

quered flag resulted in Morrison winning from Dike, Stacey Sheedy, and Kylie Lansdown the last of the finishers.

Kacey Ingram, Wayne Sheerman and then Rhys Lansdown won the three Open Standard Saloon heat races with Sheerman reducing lap times to below the eighteen second mark at his fastest.

Starting from first position in the feature event Sheerman held Ingram at bay, winning from Ingram, Ardley, Lansdown, and Matt Leek.

Rounding out all the action was the Sports Sedan class, with Lee Beach from Lysterfield able to record a lap of 16.9 during the qualifiers.

But Caleb Lincoln would come through from the second row and take the big win. Lincoln beat Beach, Knight, Ray Gould, and Felicity Roycroft.

Van Strien shines bright as star of Deep Creek DEEP CREEK GOLF The start of summer has seen no let up to the shocking weather of the last few months with heavy rains falling at the Deep Creek Golf Club last week.

Fortunately, due to improved weather later in the week – and the great efforts of Course Superintendent Rick McHugh and his ground staff – players enjoyed a competition round played in Par format on Saturday.

Suzanne van Strien (8) had a fantastic week at Deep Creek, capping off her win in the Ladies competition on Thursday with another great round on Saturday.

Van Strien finished with a score of one up to claim a one-shot victory in A Grade over the consistent Glenn Rees (10), who finished square with the card.

Shane Franzi (18) matched the score of Van Strien, finishing one up, to record a two-shot win over John Curtin (18), who continues to play some great golf of late.

Some big names won balls down the line on Saturday including Geoff Percival (square), Michael Anlanger and Grant Wilson (-1), and Bodhi Leguier, Peter Reilly, Royce Thompson, Stephen Van Ingen and John McDonald (-2).

Nearest the pins went to; 2nd: Peter Reilly (2.10m) and 16th: Suzanne Van Strien (2.38m).

Van Strien (9) won the aforementioned ladies stableford competition on Thursday with a score of 35 points.

Leah Barker won a ball down the line while Van Strien had her irons dialled in on the 16th, winning nearest the pin with a close 0.56cm.

And players enjoyed sunny but windy conditions on Sunday, with Lyriq Bester (21) handling the conditions best to post 34 points to take out the top prize.
