A woman in California even reached out to Rineke sharing that she had inspired her to create a similar initiative overseas.

“It can be a bit overwhelming... you’re not alone on this journey, but it is a very lonely journey [and] It’s, it’s quite individual how people manage their grief,” Rineke said.

“I feel like all these children are now in my care... I make sure that I do the right thing by them.” Jacinda lost her ten-year-old son Harper and his father Matt in 2019 in a tragic accident after a tree fell on their car while driving through the Dandenongs.

Jacinda said she shares Rineke’s sentiment that their kids still live on in spirit and they want to talk about them and say their names.

On special occassions like Christmas, grieving the loss of a child can be particularly difficult for parents who feel others may not relate to their loss.

This year, Upwey local Rineke Leigh and Cockatoo local Jacinda Erich have teamed up to help bereaved parents remember and honour their child’s spirit by using an Oak Tree to hang Balls with the image of their child, or an important symbol related to their child, in time for Christmas.

Rineke’s son Chris passed away 18 months ago in a skateboarding incident, and each birthday or significant date since has marked the occasion.

“I thought ‘I’m just going to event my way through this right now,’” Rineke said.

After discussions with Jacinda, Rineke decided she would create the Tree of Souls in the yard of her Upwey home.

“I wanted other parents to have an opportunity to have something for their child, because I think as bereaved parents, we know that we will never forget our child, but it’s very hard to watch them fade away from the world so to speak,” Rineke said.

“Each year passes and people forget that we’ve had that loss in our life, and it’s about ways of keeping the memory alive and keeping them shining.”

Since posting the Tree of Souls initiative on Facebook, hundreds of people have followed the page, and the first print run after the launch in early November contained 35 images, with another 30 sent in a print run just days ago.

Avoid Xmas sparks As Yarra Ranges residents adorn their homes with festive fairy lights in the lead up to the Christmas and holiday season, firefighters are reminding people to check the wiring and placement of their lights.

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan urged Victorians to take simple precautionary steps to be sure it’s only Santa’s sleigh that visits this Christmas, and not a fire truck.

“Before setting your lights up, make sure the wiring is intact, check there are no missing bulbs or frayed cords and the lights are in good, working order,” he said.

“When plugging in your lights, remember not to overload power boards, and make sure electrical cords are not covered by a rug or mat.

“Tinsel and other festive decorations will be abundant but placing lights too close to these items can present a fire risk.

“Remember to turn your Christmas lights off when leaving the house or before going to bed to ensure they don’t overheat.”

In September, CFA responded to an electrical fire caused by fairy lights at a Ferntree Gully house which caused significant damage to the brick veneer property.

Jacinda is getting more comfortable being called ‘brave’ three and a half years after the accident, but that wasn’t always the case.

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told a stranger that I’ve lost a child, and in the moment, I feel like I’m having to be the person holding the space because someone’s so uncomfortable with what I’m saying,” she said.

“I know that for some people, grief is a really private matter, and I completely understand that, but there are a whole raft of people who feel lost, that there’s nothing holding that space of ‘how do you remember a child?”

“There is a unity in bringing that voice... you’ll see just how much other parents are so grateful for what Rin and I are doing.”

Rineke will also be holding a vigil at her home in Upwey, where the tree is located, on Wednesday 21 December at 8pm, for people to come together in remembrance of their children and loved ones who have passed.

You can also send an image of your child who has passed, or a symbol relevant to you, to Rineke through the Tree of Souls Facebook page and messenger function.

The Tree of Souls will be alight for the 12 days of Christmas.

Man dies after Montrose collision A 59-year-old Kalorama man has died in hospital after a collision in Montrose last month.

Police believe a white-four-wheel drive and a motorcycle collided at the intersection of Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and Leith Road Montrose in the late hours of 24 November.

The Kalorama man riding the motorcycle was taken to hospital with serious injuries, where he died on 29 November.

The driver of the four-wheel-drive, a 23-year-old man from Ferntree Gully, did not sustain any injuries.

Police said the exact circumstances of the collision are yet to be determined and detectives from the Major Collision Unit are investigating.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.

Cold weather expected and snow a possibility The weekend’s warm weather will be a fleeting memory this week, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning it is the last across Victoria “for a while.”

The BoM tweeted on Sunday 11 December that we will see “a sequence of Winter-type cold fronts crossing the state this week. Snowfalls developing above 1400m Monday, lowering to 1000m late Tuesday and only lifting to 1200m Wednesday.”

Some areas of the Dandenong Ranges could see snow during this period.

Council warns of scam calls Yarra Ranges Council has been alerted to a potential phone scam where an unknown caller has been posing as a Council officer and asking for personal information.

Council is alerting residents to the calls, saying this caller is not a member of staff and please be wary about sharing any information over the phone.

Council said it would never ask residents to share personal financial information over the phone.

Upwey collision Police officers from Belgrave Police Station responded to reports of a collision in Upwey on Saturday 3 December, where they discovered a car had collided with a street pole before the driver allegedly drove down the wrong side of the road and collided with an oncoming car.

Police said the driver was taken to Belgrave Police Station for a breath test, with his result being 0.253, and that the man had driven two hours from country Victoria to Upwey with his two children.

No one was injured during the collision with the pole and the other vehicle. The man’s licence was cancelled on the spot and will appear in court later.

Lost dirt bike

The Tree of Souls has enabled parents to publicly remember their children who have passed.

Michelle shares her story

By Tyler Wright Just before Christmas 20 years ago Monbulk local Michelle Hall made the trip to what would have been a normal day as an apprentice hairdresser, without knowing her fate would soon be changed at the hands of a distracted driver.

On Thursday 5 December 2002, as Michelle reached Silvan, the then 19-year-old was hit head on by a car who swerved onto her side of the road, resulting in a crash which left her with two broken arms, two broken legs and no memory of the crash.

Monbulk, Wandin, Silvan CFA fire brigade crews and paramedics attended the scene, with a helicopter landing in the Tesselaar Packing Shed car park airlifting Michelle to the Alfred Hospital.

After hours of theatre, Michelle spent five days in an induced coma with a bleed to the brain, and then would spend six and a half months as an inpatient at two rehabilitation hospitals, and one year as an outpatient.

“I could lift [my legs] up but I couldn’t bend them. Each day was this tiniest bit and I’d be so excited, they’d be looking at me going ‘that’s really good,’ but me I was like ‘oh my god’, it was huge you could move that tiniest bit more each time,” Michelle said.

“My left leg had a compound dislocation, so that had to be put back into place, the right heel was smashed... they had to shoot things into it and hope that it healed; I broke my femur so they had a rod put in...my lip was cut right through,” she said.

Michelle’s family was able to bring Christmas to her hospital room that year, and she was granted leave in January to attend her grandparents’ 50th wedding anniversary.

She was even able to attend her hairdressing graduation ceremony despite the venue not having wheelchair access; with her dad, uncle and now brother-in-law carrying her up the stairs with her chair close behind.

Up until five years ago, Michelle was still taking glass out of her face which had resurfaced years after her incident.

She still sees an osteopath for pain in her knees, back and neck and has had a headache ever since the crash, having not been able to pursue her passion for hair-dressing full time because of the inability to stand on her feet for long periods of time.

And the wait times for medical care have been long.

“It’s been a rough ride; you lose weight, you gain weight, you try and lose weight, then you end up injuring yourself with joining the gym and the physio, then that goes around in a vicious cycle,” she said.

Monbulk CFA Fire Brigade captain Simon Schroder attended Michelle’s car accident as a young firefighter, and said the impacts of road

trauma extends well beyond the patient.

“You’ve got bystanders and other people involved in accidents, right through the medical fraternity and the police and ambos [who have] got to be exposed to it,” captain Schroder said.

“What you would think is just one person in a head on can affect dozens and dozens of people.”

Captain Schroder said over the past six weeks, Monbulk Fire Brigade crews have attended five road accidents, with “no rhyme or reason” to them.

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s wet or dry; If you’re on your phone, or texting or changing a radio station, it can happen in any weather,” he said.

“From my experience, we probably get more accidents in the rain, but less involvement from us because people are generally slowing down in wet weather, so the impacts of accidents are less because they’re more fender benders.”

Fatigue is a big issue over the Christmas period, he said, for people who may not be familiar with ‘towing fatigue’ as they travel with caravans.

“A reminder to take breaks and have power naps...[It’s] better to get there 10 minutes late and be alive than not at all.”

Michelle now works in administration and is a leader at Monbulk Girl Guides working with young women and girls in the community, and now shares her story each year during the Christmas period to encourage others to be as aware as they can while driving.

“It’s not always your driving that is the issue, it’s other people [that] drive drunk, people that are tired, people that are aren’t concentrating, so you’ve got to be on the ball,” she said.

“There are times when you get that feeling occasionally where it’s all a bit much, but you wouldn’t have it any other way either.”

Grassfires move so quickly, it’s impossible to outrun them.

Rural grassfires can be just as dangerous as bushfires, and can actually spread even faster, travelling at speeds of up to 25km/h. If you live close to open paddocks or grasslands, you could be at risk and need to be prepared. On Extreme or Catastrophic Fire Danger Rated days, the safest option is to leave early.

Advocating to Canberra

By Tyler Wright Yarra Ranges Council and Cardinia Shire Council are awaiting confirmation on whether two major road projects in the municipalities will be able to fully continue, after the federal government confirmed funding cuts to the ‘Sealing the Hills’ and ‘Roads for the Community’ programs in the October budget.

The programs were due to run until 2029 after $300 million of funding was announced in 2019 to seal 187 kilometres of unsealed roads in the Yarra Ranges and 110 kilometres of unsealed roads in Cardinia Shire.

One of the major roads now in question is the Kallista’s Gleghorn Road which was listed in the Yarra Ranges Council’s Roads for the Community Program, expected to be sealed with associated underground drainage improvements and completed in the 2022-23 financial year.

The other is works on Emberson Street which was included in the program for 2025-26.

The Star Mail understands Yarra Ranges Council received approval for funding of $98,577,380 in 2021 to help deliver the first six years of the Roads for the Community program.

Cardinia Shire Council has had $41 million of federal funding approved for the Sealing the Hills’ current and upcoming works, the Star Mail understands.

There are a total of 42 packages outstanding in the Sealing the Hills program across more than 160 roads and 102 km in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounds.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jim Child and Cardinia Shire Council Mayor Tammy Radford went to Canberra last week to meet with the federal government about their commitment to fund the remaining unsealed roads projects.

“However, we are expecting significant cuts to funding which will impact community members right across Yarra Ranges,” Mr Millard said.

According to Mr Millard, the Roads for Community Program has delivered significant road construction projects, with associated drainage, that otherwise may not have been possible.

Feedback from residents - particularly those on constructed roads - has also been

“We are extremely disappointed that the program will not be completed in full, but we are expecting more information on funding commitments by the end of the year,” Mr Millard said.

“We will inform the community of the result, including residents on roads currently flagged for future construction.”

Mayor Radford said the funding is vital to support community and council to seal hundreds of kilometres of roads.

“We’re continuing to advocate strongly for funding towards the entirety of this program.

On behalf of our communities, we’d be extremely disappointed should federal funding not be available for the entirety of this vitally important road safety program,” she said.

Both councils are awaiting an official response from the responsible Minister.

A spokesperson for the Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government told the Star Mail the October budget honoured the Albanese Government’s election commitments, and sought to deliver infrastructure projects in a sustainable way.

“The current economic conditions which are affecting the delivery of infrastructure investments, and increasing pressure on the Commonwealth Budget, so existing infrastructure projects have been reviewed, and in some cases, reduced or discontinued,” the spokesperson said.

“This includes the Sealing Roads projects in the Dandenong Ranges for the Yarra Ranges and Cardinia Shire councils, where future projects have been discontinued. A number of projects have already been delivered and we will continue to work with both councils

to deliver works that are currently under construction or have tender processes underway to ensure minimal disruption.”

The spokesperson said the federal government is investing in road infrastructure that will support a better connected future for the Dandenong Ranges and surrounding region, including a $1.75 billion investment in the North East Link and $21.55 million in the Princes Highway Intersection Upgrades – Pakenham to Beaconsfield projects, both already underway.

“We are also continuing to roll out the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) program, which is providing funds to all Australian councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects, supporting jobs and the resilience of local communities,” they said.

Across the first three phases of LRCI, Yarra Ranges Shire Council is receiving around $12.06 million, Cardinia Shire Council nearly $9.15 million, and the City of Greater Dandenong just over $8.15 million.

“To continue this support, the Government has committed an additional $250 million to Phase 4 of the LRCI program, on top of the previously announced $500 million – taking the total commitment to this program to $3.25 billion. Councils will be able to access funding through Phase 4 from 1 July 2023, with projects to be delivered by 30 June 2025.”

Rate rises and inflation contribute to cost of living The Reserve Bank of Australia has raised interest rates for the final time in 2022 by .25 basis points to 3.10 per cent, as Australians continue to find making ends meet more difficult.

After a meeting by the RBA board on Tuesday 6 December, Governor Phillip Lowe said the rate of inflation in Australia is too high.

“A further increase in inflation is expected over the months ahead, with inflation forecast to peak at around 8 per cent over the year to the December quarter,” he said.

“Inflation is then expected to decline next year due to the ongoing resolution of global supply-side problems, recent declines in some commodity prices and slower growth in demand.”

Governor Lowe also said the unemployment rate declining to 3.4 per cent in October was the lowest rate since 1974. The cash rate is at its highest since November 2022.

Youth take to the streets

By Mikayla van Loon With the closure of the Lilydale Youth Hub pending at the end of this year, young people and adult allies gathered to rally and march against the ceasing of funding for the service in 2023.

Organised by members of the Yarra Ranges Council Youth Advisory Group (YAG) and young people from the Hub, people came out in numbers to support the march on Saturday 10 December.

“Today, we gather outside the front of the Lilydale Youth Hub for a reason, to raise our voices for youth mental health support and to stand against this closure,” YAG member and rally organiser Candice said.

“The loss of the Lilydale Youth Hub will lead to the forced abandonment of hundreds of young people who access these services. It will lead to the loss of a vital safe space that young people have used to escape to when nowhere else has felt quite like home.”

Lilydale Youth Hub staff member Emma said if you were to fill a football oval with the number of young people, their parents, carers and friends, that’s how many people the Hub has been able to support in three years.

“The Yarra Ranges has the highest amount of youth mental health issues in the region... and we have the least services available,” she said.

As a partnering body with Cire, Anchor, Oonah and Eastern Community Legal, as well as headspace, Emma said the Hub has become an instrumental part of the region’s response to mental health support services.

“We take the pressure off of a lot of the other systems, the hospital system. We provide an early intervention and prevention service where you can walk in and get immediate help.

Where else can you get that kind of support?”

The heart wrenching truth of the closure was quite emotional for Inspiro CEO Sue Sestan who said “we’ve done everything we can.”

“When you see people interacting, so much effort went into it, together. It’s not easy to do this stuff and it’s going to go to waste,” she said.

Holding out hope the evaluation will be positive, Sue said however, scientific evaluation doesn’t share the human impact and “all these kids are testimony. They’re the case studies.”

“We’re not going to give up on the model, the model is amazing. People may not be listening but we’ll keep advocating and at least I know this actually makes a difference.”

For YAG member and as someone who used the Hub during a difficult time in her life, Charley said “I’m honestly more than frustrated.”

“In my own experience, the Hub ensured I was able to focus back on my university studies when I’d almost given up,” she said.

“All we did was give them a space where they felt safe, where they felt supported and where they felt heard…The initial tender was about youth voice being present in the model. Today (10 Dec), it was demonstrated,” she said.

Hub staff have found other positions within the local area to hopefully continue benefiting young people. The Hub space on Clarke Street will stand empty.

“All we need is someone who can fund the Hub. Even if for any reason this is within your means and you’re thinking about it, please don’t remain silent.”

Calls for added safety precautions on Paternoster Rd

By Tyler Wright Residents and business owners along Paternoster Road in Emerald are calling for more safety measures along a deceptive bend between Bailey Road and Beaconsfield-Emerald Road after a three-car accident on Saturday 3 December.

While there were no injuries and none of the drivers were taken to hospital after the incident, resident Maurizio Toneatto said the number of vehicles using the road has increased considerably over the more than 10 years he has lived in the area.

“There’s a lot of young families in the area; myself, I’ve got two young kids, the family across the road have two young kids, next door to me there’s three or four young children,” Mr Toneatto said.

“We all have pets; as well as dogs I have horses, I’ve had a dog killed in front of my house when he got out one morning and crossing the road with horses is quite a stress for us.

“There’s a lot of riders in the area that are often going up and down the road, and it’s a real concern when you see them out because of the speed of these cars.”

Mr Toneatto said he has been writing to Cardinia Shire Council for around ten years expressing his concerns and requesting a traffic study and engineering study along the strip, but no action has come from his requests.

He also wants the speed limit along the strip to be changed from 80 km/hr to 60 km/ hr.

“It’s a perfect hooning section, because you can basically go flat out up or down this hill, and why some people lose control in the process, so those strips would add to the 60km restriction or limit.”

Owner of Paternoster Wines Phil Hession also said vehicles need to be forced to slow down, with the 80 km/hr limit “way too fast” on the corner.

He also said the corner needs to be widened, although current guard rails along the strip do provide some protection.

“We’re on the east side of the property, and that’s particularly dangerous because there’s

a house in the firing line,” Mr Hession said.

“Most people probably think the top of the hill’s quite flat, but it isn’t...It’s a tighter than 90 degree bend, which means the unknowing driver is caught by surprise without realising it’s going to drop and it’s going to be tighter than 90 degrees...that’s when they freak out and lose control.”

A Cardinia Shire Council spokesperson said the council has undertaken a “number of safety improvements along Paternoster Road in recent years based on discussions with the Department of Transport, Victoria Police and the Cardinia Highway Patrol”.

According to the spokesperson, the safety improvement measures undertaken have resulted in a considerable number of treatments at various locations along Paternoster Road.

“In 2014, Council undertook the speed limit reduction from 100km/h to 80km/h for the entire length of the road,” the spokesperson said.

“In both 2009/10 and again in 2019/20 Federal BlackSpot funded improvement works were undertaken involving signage and line marking changes, several sealed shoulders, selected tree removals and selected crash barriers.

“In 2019, Safer Road Countermeasures, funded by Council and VicRoads, were implemented involving additional signage, audio tactile edge line marking and selected crash barriers.”

The spokesperson said the current speed limit of 80 km/hr has been reviewed, and the current posted speed is considered the most appropriate, “given the environment that this road sits within and the current Department of Transport State Speed Zoning Guidelines”.

“While the ongoing crash history of Paternoster Road has significantly declined over the past 10 years, Council’s traffic engineers will continue to review safety and monitor our roads in accordance with our responsibilities under the Road Management Act and the Road Safety Regulations.” mailcommunity.com.au

Recognising local youth

By Callum Ludwig 2022 has been a big year for youth in the Yarra Ranges, as they got out and made significant community contributions as we emerged from two years of interruptions.

The 15th edition of the Celebrating YOUth awards was held at the Mooroolbark Community Centre on Wednesday 7 December to recognise some of the fine efforts of local young people.

There were 31 nominations in six categories: Resilience, Passionate Advocate, Creative Arts, Young Entrepreneurs, Environmental Sustainability, Community Improvement and special recognition for a local winner of ABC’s TakeOver Melbourne competition.

The Resilience award was first and it went to Burmese refugee Byak Hlei Par Kang. Byak missed a fair portion of her formal education in the time it took for her and her family to make it to Australia, but she knuckled down and the award recognises her academic efforts.

Byak said learning English fluently has been her biggest challenge and she is still learning so that she can speak fluently and confidently with her friends. Byak’s advice to other young people in a tough spot was to never be negatively affected by their surroundings.

The Passionate Advocate award went to Telita Lenore, who was involved in the Victorian Youth Parliament’s push to mandate a Reconciliation Action Plan for all schools in Victoria.

Local schools had taken notice with Mount Lilydale Mercy College having previously enquired how the school can use the information provided in the RAP to address the upcoming compulsory teaching of cultural connection to the land in science.

Hayden Pierson took out the Creative Arts award for his work with the MISFIT Project, a peer-to-peer initiative with young people in the YarraRanges offering options to be involved in theatre groups, hangouts, writing

Hayden couldn’t attend in person as he was involved in the MISFIT end-of-year performance but left a powerful video message encouraging adults to get on a similar level as young people and let them speak while listening to hear, rather than respond.

The Young Entrepreneurs Award was presented to Blaise, Oskar and Geordie from OBG Productions, who started up their video production company over the last two years to fill a gap in local talent. They have exceeded their

customer expectations while also working and meeting a lot of cool different people. The three boys encouraged any young person with a passion to follow it, bring their skills together with others and bring it to life, and they wantto see the perception that young people are lazy and unmotivated change.

Candice Farrugia-Roberts was the winner of the Environmental Sustainability award, as she studies botany and is making the effort to be a ‘litter fairy who endeavours to keep rubbish off our streets and out of the environment, hosting clothes swaps and with plans for

an organised rubbish pick up event. Candice said she has learnt the power of asking, by just posing the question or idea to someone often enough to get them on board and involved.

She wants to see the perception changed that young people can’t be entrusted with power and that she enjoys the energy of a community coming together.

The lead volunteers of the Rural rainbows group, Harry, Teddy, Jessy, Kirsten and Razz were honoured with the Community Improvement award for creating a safe space among the local LGBTQIA+. Harry was in attendance to accept the award and said he has enjoyed hanging out with the people who have joined the group and connecting with them on the base level of just having a conversation. Harry said the group has been very popular and he encourages anyone with a similar idea for safe space to do so, and wants to change the perception that young people are apathetic.

Klarissa is boarding at the Worawa Aboriginal College in Healesville, leaving her friends and family in the Tiwi Islands to learn in the Yarra Ranges. Klarissa shared her story for the ABC’s Takeover Melbourne and told of her desire to keep culture strong, something which she does by speaking three Indigenous languages and her artwork. Klarissa said she enjoys camping on country and watching the stars at night, remembering the stories her grandma told her. This year, Klarissa won first prize for her get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! poster and got to paint the boots of Hawthorn AFL players for the Indigenous Round.

Representatives of the Yarra Ranges Youth Advisory Group, Yarra Ranges Youth ambassadors and FreeZa committee members attended the event.

The entire event was organised and run by the Celebrating YOUth committee and all award winners received a certificate, a $200 gift voucher and a framed piece of artwork from Indigenous artist Billy-Jay O’Toole.

Kabloom’s golden award

By Tyler Wright Silvan’s Tesselaar Kabloom Festival took out the top spot in the Victorian Tourism Awards last week, joining other local events and businesses who also took home accolades for their contribution to delivering memorable experiences.

Tessealaar Kabloom 2022 won gold in the major festivals and events category at the annual awards ceremony held by the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) at Centrepiece Melbourne Park on Thursday 1 December.

The Kabloom Festival kicked off in Autumn 2018, but has only run for three years since due to the pandemic.

Fields of autumn flowers brighten Tesselaar’s fields during the festival for 28 days in March and April, with entertainment, culinary delights, souvenir shops, lawn games, a guided tractor ride or a pleasant fresh mountain air stroll around the fields also available for punters to enjoy.

With 70,000 visitors in 2022, Tesselaar’s Managing Director Paul Tesselaar predicts Kabloom will give the famed and long-running Tulip Festival, held around September, a “run for its money”.

“It was unexpected because we go to those we go to those events having made a submission, but without knowing what award we would win… we’re absolutely ecstatic that we’ve got it, and I think it’s a fantastic event, so it should be picked up there with the best of them,” Mr Tesselaar said.

“Like the Tulip Festival, what we provide here is an opportunity for Melburnians to have a special day out up in the hills... they can escape their daily lives of the grind of being down there - and their concrete jungles.

“Once you get inside the gates, you experience a totally different utopian world, because we’ve got the fields full of colour, have some special entertainment... the crux of it is is giving them the opportunity to come and enjoy nature and all the special area up here has to offer.”

111 submissions were made to the Victorian Tourism Awards this year, all vying to be recognised as a bronze, silver or gold award recipient across 31 various categories.

Healesville Sanctuary received gold in the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Island Tourism Experiences category, with silver nod to Yering Gorge Cottages and Balgownie Estate in the Self Contained Accommodation category and Business Event Venue categories respectively.

Four Pillars Distillery was named a finalist in the Tourism Wineries, Distilleries & Breweries category.

Mr Tesselaar said it is “wonderful” to know others in the Yarra Ranges region are having success as well.

“The more attractive we can make the region, the better and the more prosperous everyone in the region will be,” Mr Tesselaar said.

Visitors to the Tesselaar Kabloom Festival in 2023 can also expect more wild flower displays and more sunflowers as festival organisers continue to add more elements to the event each year.

“All the roles are important from management right through to the person that makes the coffee, the person that clears the table, or the farmer that actually plants the plants and tends to them,” Mr Tesselaar said.

“It’s a win for the entire team.”

Tourism bodies optimistic for strong Christmas trade

By Parker McKenzie Tourism bodies are confident that 2022 will be without much of the pain experienced by the industry in 2020 and 2021, however, it isn’t without challenges for Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges businesses.

Yarra Ranges Tourism CEO Simon O’Callaghan said the tourism industry is expecting a strong summer period of trade.

“We are balancing that with a lot of businesses still recovering from the pandemic, a lot of things haven’t quite got back to normal,” he said.

“The whole industry is optimistic but we also have workforce challenges at the current time, which will make maximizing patronage difficult.”

According to the Victoria Tourism Industry Council, 4.2 million domestic travellers will pass through Melbourne airport over the Christmas period.

Mr O’Callaghan said it is an important period for the region because people have time off to visit for extended periods.

“We are encouraging people to stay longer, that’s one thing we’ve been working to speak to our visits and make sure they make the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges more than just a day trip,” he said.

“Our industries have had goods and facilities impacted by the recent floods, which we need to be conscious of. There are businesses out there that have been delivering great services, but there is still a shortage of supply.

“The great news is that we are full of over 80

different wineries and distilleries; most of their production has been well kept so we can put it on show for visitors.”

Victoria Tourism Industry Council CEO Felicia Mariani supported O’Callaghan’s optimism and said the holiday period looks very different than it did 12 months ago.

“December 2021 saw the emergence of Omicron along Australia’s eastern coast, triggering border restrictions and throwing holiday plans into chaos,” she said.

“This year will be the first Christmas travel period without border restrictions since 2019, and consumer travel demand is at an all-time high.”

1.7 million international travellers are forecasted to pass through Melbourne airport, representing 95 per cent of pre-Covid travel.

“At our lowest point in March 2021, total tourism spend in our state had fallen from the lofty height of $32.5 billion to just $9.8 billion,” Ms Mariani said.

“Fast forward 12 months to March 2022, and that number had climbed to $16.5 billion; and three months later to June, total tourism spend had more than doubled to $20.7 billion.”

Mr O’Callaghan said locals to the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley play a key role as ambassadors for the region.

“When you see a visitor, help make their day and point them in the direction of our hidden secrets,” he said.

“We are trying to get them to visit as many different businesses as possible, to spread their spending around the region.”

Plan for reconciliation

By Parker McKenzie Kallista Primary School launched its new Reconciliation Action Plan on Friday 9 December with a special assembly to celebrate the moment with the school’s community.

Principal Christine Finighan welcomed students, teachers and parents to the assembly and said the school had worked for years to form the action plan.

“I’d like to welcome you all, I feel a little bit nervous today because this is such an important assembly,” she said.

“We’ve been working towards this for some time.”

Wurundjeri woman Stacie Piper, who is also a member of the school community, gave a Welcome to Country and said she congratulates the school for “getting the plan across the line.”

“It is a very special assembly because for the committee —and I’ve been in and out of the committee for the past two years — it’s been a lot of hard work,” she said.

“A reconciliation plan is essentially something that recognizes the country that the school is on, where we all live and work and play, and it’s a way for us to embed the values of the local custodians into everything we do.”

Students sang the Inclusive Australian Anthem, with parents and guests invited to join in.

School captains Aimee, who also gave an Acknowledgement to Country, and Ferg explained to those in attendance what the reconciliation plan meant to the school.

“It is an important document as it sets out how an organisation like our school is coming to terms with reconciliation,” Ferg said.

“We are learning more about indigenous peoples throughout the year and the fact our school is doing this is an amazing thing,” Aimee said.

Benches a group effort

By Parker McKenzie Two community groups have collaborated on a project for the Upwey Community Garden, making use of local woodworking skills.

The Upwey Men’s Shed was contacted by The Upwey Community Group to create two benches for the garden, delivering the gift to the community despite having no permanent home of their own.

President of Upwey Men’s Shed Gerran Wright said a member of the group constructed the benches at his own home.

“A couple of other guys visited him, including me, to help assemble,” he said.

“We did an initial model that they liked and we’ve made improvements to that and constructed the two benches.”

The Men’s Shed raised $250,000 through grants and fundraising efforts to for the construction of a permanent home within the Upwey community but has been unable to find a suitable or available location for the past three years after several proposed sights were knocked back.

Upwey Community Group’s Andrew Peterson said both groups are local, communityfocused not-for-profit organisations.

“They’re a group of gentlemen looking for companionship and activity to keep themselves mentally and physically fit,” he said.

“This was a task they took on for us to build two new benches for the garden next to Main Street, and they’ve done a wonderful job.”

Mr Peterson said the Men’s Shed would be able to do much more work for the local community if they had a place to call their own.

“Upwey revolves around community connection, it’s a great community and lots of people contribute to it,” he said.

“It’s a little town off the side of the highway with a population of around 6000 and the community is a huge part of it.

The Men’s Shed continues to meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Upwey Township Hall for coffee and chat sessions but would like a home of their own to support future projects for the community.

Mr Wright said the people continue to support the organisation and he is hopeful 2023 will be the year they find a permanent home.

“We got some really good help from DEMAK Timber in Ferntree Gully, who donated the timber for the benches to the Men’s Shed,” he said.

“It’s difficult when individual members are doing the work themselves and we all have

limited space to accommodate projects in our own garages or sheds.” The Upwey Community Garden — where the benches will be installed — is located at 72-76 Main Street, Upwey.

While the Festival itself runs from December 1st until December 24th, the Eagle Twilight Christmas is a once off community Christmas event held onsite at the Eagle to raise money for Mums Supporting Families in Need (MSFIN).

MSFIN is a grass roots, local charity working to support local families doing it tough. Working with over 80 welfare agencies to provide material aid support for families in crisis, the charity aims to ensure no family is living without their basic daily needs being met, and that no

child goes without essentials.

For a community minded business like the Eagle, it was the perfect charity to support.

“The Eagle is a business run by locals with deep roots in our community” explains Sarah Cottrill, Eagle Marketing Manager, “and it’s wonderful to be able to open up our world class facilities for the community, in support of the community. Supporting MFSIN is something that we are very proud to be able to do.”

The Eagle Twilight Christmas will be held on 20th December from 5pm until 9pm. “We chose the 20th December because it’s the date when all the locals schools

break up for the holidays!” Sarah enthuses. “We thought – what better way to finish up the school term than with a family friendly Christmassy celebration!”

The Eagle will be offering heavily discounted $50 Family Tickets during the Twilight Christmas event, enabling more local families to ride, and with all profits being donated to MSFIN. Gondola rides will be available until 9pm, including the new green and red ‘Christmas’ gondolas!

A sausage sizzle will complement the Eagle café’s delicious menu: festive sweets and treats to get even the grouchiest grinch into the spirit of the season! Kids activities

will run throughout the evening, along with free face painting and roving entertainment. A Christmas concert will be held under the gondolas, with local performers eager to get together to support this fantastic event.

Even Santa himself is coming to visit during the evening! He knows there’s always something on at the Arthurs Seat Eagle this Christmas!

Th e Eagle is open every day until Christmas. It will be closed on Christmas Day, before reopening for a jam-packed Summer Festival from December 26th until January 26th.

BELGRAVE CHRISTMAS CAROLS

First carols to touchdown Belgrave’s very first Carols will touchdown in the township, on December 21.

Staged in St Thomas More Primary (Reynolds Lane), the inaugural event is headlined by some of the hills most beloved artists, including headline act, Lily and King.

They will be supported by Spotify chart toppers, Velvet Bloom, with solo artists Molly Cormack and a coterie of young emerging artists adding their voices to the celebration.

The Big Dreams Market is running alongside this event from 4pm, with artisan, sustainable and hand made goods ready to be added to the Christmas stocking.

There will also be plenty of food, coffee, sweets and ice cream to go around. Expect special appearances by Santa who, on good authority, is delighted to see Belgrave spreading the Christmas cheer in 2022.

The main street of Belgrave will also be humming and open for shoppers and diners.

In all, Belgrave Carols sounds like your one stop shop for food, last minute gifts and entertainment this Christmas.

The event has been made possible with the generous support of the Belgrave Traders Association, in conjunction with event partners, Bendigo Bank and Bell Real Estate.

The holiday spirit spreads

By Tyler Wright Businesses throughout the Dandenong Ranges are giving big for the third Christmas in the Hills hamper project, with 45 prizes up for grabs in a raffle to be drawn on Friday 16 December at the Royal Hotel in Upper Ferntree Gully.

The idea to create a raffle for the Christmas in the Hills hamper project began in 2020 when Ferntree Gully local Lisa Rodek saw a need to ignite some holiday spirit in the area after lockdown.

Lisa also saw the chance to support local support service Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief (DRERS), with the proceeds from the raffle tickets injected into their vital work.

And the Royal Hotel got on board as well, decorating its exterior with decorations and setting up a Christmas tree at its stair case.

Sooki Lounge and Cameo Cinema in Belgrave, Treetops Adventures, Upwey Pizza and Upwey Groomers and The Butcher Club in Ferntree Gully were some of the first businesses on board when the initiative began, and have contributed each year.

“I’m so appreciative and so flabbergasted at the response,” Lisa said.

“Last year I called someone to tell her she’d won a voucher in the raffle, and she was a single Mum and so grateful because it meant she could put on a nice lunch for her kids.”

The Upwey-Tecoma Cricket Club has donated a B-reserve family pass to the Boxing Day test for this year’s raffle.

“It’s all just about a love of Christmas and the local community, that’s the driver,” Lisa said.

DRERS CEO Tania Bevan said the proceeds from ticket sales will go towards supporting those who need the service.

“Hundreds of people go without. People need food, especially essentials,” Ms Bevan said.

“There is an increased demand this year due to the rising cost of living...emergency relief, especially assistance with payment of utility bills, rent, fuel and food.”

Where you can meet Santa with your local CFAs Thousands of locals across the Dandenong Ranges are expected to come together on their town’s street to be able to see Santa and enjoy lollies as various fire brigades take part in the Santa Run this Christmas.

The Monbulk Fire & Rescue crew will be driving throughout the township on Christmas Eve (Saturday 24 December) as part of the the popular decades-long tradition, and with live tracking from the Monbulk Fire & Rescue (CFA) Facebook page, locals will be able to see where they can spot the CFA tanker, and Santa, as the vehicle travels throughout the streets.

“It’s great to see the looks on the kids faces, and it brings a lot of joy,” Monbulk Fire & Rescue Brigade Captain Simon Schroder said.

“There’s a few hundred dollars worth of lollies around town... It’s good to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and give the kids a bit of a moment...they do like the lollies, that’s for sure,” Schroder said.

For Silvan Fire Brigade, the annual Santa Run is one of its bigger community engagements.

Sunday 18 December is the date that Santa will travel throughout the town, with a command vehicle sounding a few minutes before Saint Nick’s arrival to alert keen kids and adults alike.

“We’ve only been doing for roughly seven years and it gets better every year,” Silvan Fire Brigade 1st Lieutenant Scott Houlder said.

“We’ve got members that look forward to it and go ‘righto, we’re on for Santa this year’ and we’ve got community the same,” he said.

Gembrook Fire Brigade’s tanker will be at Gembrook Skate Park at 5pm on Wednesday 21 December, and will arrive at J.A.C Russell Park at around 5.30pm.

Santa and one of his elves will then take a walk up Gembrook’s Main Street, calling in on businesses including the local pizza shop, mailcommunity.com.au

Foothills, the local Santa

By Parker McKenzie Foothills Community Care’s Christmas toy drive is entering its 21st year, and the organisation is asking the public to help those less fortunate to have a great festive season.

Foothills founder Stephen Barrington said while for some people Christmas is a time for family, festivities and joy, for others it can be a weird time.

“For a lot of people that we connect with each week, it’s actually a really sad time of the year and it’s something that people don’t look forward to it all,” he said.

“We like to remind people that we are here for everyone and that everyone has somebody to be with over this time.”

Mr Barrington said the gifts are handed out at Foothills events, like a market last Friday where 60 mums received donated toys, and at the Foothills Christmas eve lunch.

“Christmas Eve is a great time to support people who normally have nowhere else to go,” he said.

“We have entertainment, we have face painting, we have a photo booth and we have the Christmas Angel that comes along.”

300 people are currently booked in for the Christmas Eve lunch, including 50 to 60 children who will attend and be able to receive gifts from the toy drive.

Mr Barrington said the best items to donate are gifts for children between 10 and 17 because they often receive gifts for younger children.

“We find that is the hardest group to cater for and we have a lot in that age group,” he said.

“Things like games, puzzles, even vouchers like movie vouchers, sporting equipment like basketballs and footballs, those types of

He said there are multiple ways people can contribute to the toy drive.

“We have a few giving trees around the place. Bendigo Bank in Ferntree Gully is the best way to get things to us, they’ve supported us the whole 21 years this has been running which is fantastic,” Mr Barrington said.

“They can contact us directly or at the Toy World in Mountain Gate is doing a pay-it-forward program where you can buy toys at the shop and leave them there for us.”

Give to those in need and support Yarra Ranges trees Yarra Ranges Council is working to make Christmas a little brighter for all, but it needs the help of the community to do it.

Several Christmas wishing trees have been set up at Community Links across the Yarra Ranges to give back to those who are doing it tough.

Donations of toys, non-perishable goods and pet food will go toward supporting local charities including Holy Fools, local food banks and Animal Aid. Yarra Ranges Holy Fools CEO Neal Taylor said the appeal was even more important this year, given the financial difficulties brought on

by Covid-19, and the storms and floods.

“This year we’re aiming to hand out 500 food hampers because we know the demand for help is higher than ever.

Understandably it’s a tough time for everyone, but this is a great way to give back to the community and make a difference for people who really need it and we’re really trying to meet that growing demand.”

“Next time you’re out shopping, please consider picking up some items and dropping them off at your local Community Link or charity.”

Wishing Trees are up in the Civic Centre and in the Community Links at Yarra Junction, Monbulk, Healesville, Upwey, and Lilydale.

Yarra Ranges Council Deputy Mayor, Sophie Todorov said that Council is a proud supporter of this initiative and thanked the community for their continued generosity.

“To make sure families in the Yarra Ranges have a good Christmas, we have set up several Wishing Trees at our Community Links so our community can donate gifts for those families,” Cr Todorov said.

“Donating a gift can change a life and bring a smile to the faces of children and their families at this special time of year.”

“Our links are open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, so just come in and talk to the team here, let them know and leave food under the tree.”

Place your window votes This year’s Yarra Ranges Council Christmas Window Competition is celebrating the Yarra Ranges’ beautiful communities, resilient businesses, and all things merry and bright.

First year entrants, Rob and Judy Thompson from Vintage & Collectables Marketplace in Lilydale said it was great opportunity to spread the Christmas cheer.

“For us it’s our first Christmas in Lilydale and we wanted to bring some joy to Clark Street,” Rob said.

“We have so many Christmas things in our shop here that we were able to do a really nice display and brighten up our windows.

We’ve designed our window decoration to embrace a combination of craft and retail and have shaped some timber coat hangers into a Christmas tree to represent the vintage clothing available and the selection of retail items available to purchase.”

“We also have a metre tall Christmas elf to watch over festivities. It’s a great bit of fun and just a great wholesome way to spread the Christmas cheer and promote our township and make it look nice for visitors.”

Residents who vote for their favourite window go into the running to win prizes all while supporting local businesses.

There are four local prizes up for grabs

from the Urban, Hills, Valley and Upper categories.

The businesses with the most votes from each category will also receive a hamper of locally sourced goodies.

“Every year, our businesses make a great effort to dress their windows and get involved with the competition and each year we see the number of entries becoming more creative,” Cr Todorov said.

$45k raised for sick kids

By Parker McKenzie Rotary Club of Emerald’s annual Kid’s Fun Run raised over $45,000 for the Monash Children’s Hospital in 2022, in an event that saw hundreds of children race Puffing Billy around the township.

Held on Sunday 4 December, the Fun Run — which won Cardinia Council’s community event of the year for 2021 — saw children aged three to 12 raise funds for charity while running alongside the iconic Puffing Billy at Gembrook Railway Station.

Emerald Rotary Club President Shalini Penny said the Fun Run has been supporting the children’s hospital two times previously.

“It’s very heartwarming to know they’ll get this money and put it to good use,” she said.

“Normally people don’t register to the last minute, but this year they were registering quickly which was a nice bonus.”

The fundraiser has donated over $671,250 to children’s charities since it first started in 2002.

Event organizer John Henderson said it was a great turnout on a “very hot day.”

“We haven’t had the event for a couple of years because of Covid-19, the event was in 2019,” he said.

“The kids each received a certificate and a show bag donated by local businesses, that was brilliant as well.”

Over 100 volunteers made the event possible, with 500 children taking part in the fun run.

Mr Henderson said it wouldn’t have been possible without the work of Rotarians and volunteers.

“It’s not just a fundraiser. It’s a really good community event, promoting the town of Gembrook,” he said.

“The local CFA came down for a sausage sizzle and lots of locals came by to lend their

One participant Byron was the top fundraiser with $1060 raised for charity, with the top five fundraisers gifting $3736 to Monash Children’s Hospital. Mr Penny said the event wouldn’t have been possible without the support of Puffing Billy Railway and the event’s sponsors.

“They funded a lot of things towards the event, provided the train for the day and the grounds as well,” she said.

“Community events bring out the best in everyone.”

The Patch based author publishes

By Parker McKenzie An author from The Patch has released her second book, taking readers on a trip to Venice in a “psychological mystery with a historical background.”

Dolores Bellemo’s The Autumn of Letting Go was published on 24 November and follows an Australian journalist reluctantly returning to Venice to face her past, finding rumours of blackmail and murder in the iconic city as she investigates the death of an old woman.

Ms Bellemo said her writing has been inspired by writers like Pascal Mercer, Robert Dessaix and Philip Roth.

“I started writing a short story and as I progressed I thought this could be a good book,” she said.

“I just kept writing a story that was quite personal to me and being realistic about it.”

Her first book, a memoir titled Crazy for Italy, detailed her time spent within her husband’s country of birth.

Ms Bellemo said the difference between writing fiction and non-fiction is that the latter is more restrictive.

“You’ve got to be careful of what you’re saying because it’s coming from the truth with a memoir, whereas with fiction, you’ve got all the liberty to say whatever you like,” she said.

“I always say to people fiction is the real truth, especially when I’m talking about something I know a lot about. It’s something I had to get out; it’s sort of been both exciting for me and cathartic.”

Ms Bellemo retired from secondary school

teaching to pursue her passion for writing and has written several published short stories alongside her two books.

She said despite a similar setting between The Girl From Venice by Martin Cruz Smith and The Autumn of Letting Go, her own novel isn’t a love story.

“Within the setting of Venice, I do write about its fascist past,” she said.

“I feel that I do speak a lot about women and women that don’t have a voice. That is quite relevant to what’s happening at the moment.”

Autumn Of Letting Go can be purchased online and Ms Bellemo hopes to have the book stocked in local Dandenong Ranges bookstores soon.

New public art installation coming for the village

By Parker McKenzie Last week, The Star Mail showcased the first in a series of public art pieces installed throughout Ferntree Gully Village.

Located along the wall of Horologist Lane, artists Joanna Mott and John Powell collaborated with local school children to create murals of native animals made from pressings of native plants.

Through the Ferntree Gully Creative Placemaking Plan, Knox City Council will continue to expand and install new public art throughout the area with lightbox galleries, creative play elements and murals to active public spaces.

Knox City Mayor Marcia Timmers-Leitch said the plan is a direct response to feedback from traders and residents “who considered the village to be in a poor state with significant vandalism, graffiti and empty shops.”

“Council has developed a plan in consultation with community members who told us they want to see the return of this oncevibrant, historic township,” she said.

“This plan will help Ferntree Gully Village realise its potential as a tourism destination and gateway to the Dandenong Ranges.”

The $240,000 project has been funded through $130,000 from the council and $110,000 from the Victorian Government’s Liv-

ing Local fund Suburban Grants.

Mayor Timmers-Leitsh said the council’s plan uses art to “beautify and create interest in the village and improve community safety along key pedestrian walkways with artworks installed within light boxes.”

“We will build on the unique identity of the village with community and public art installations reflecting the community-elected themes of nature and the environment, local history, First Nations and diversity to bring back the unique character of the village,” she said.

“This plan supports the long-term cultural, social and economic wellbeing of Ferntree Gully Village for local residents, traders and visitors, and forms part of Council’s broader work to support suburban renewal and retail activation of key precincts in Knox.”

Ms Mott told the Star Mail on 5 December that local councils are increasingly supporting artists to engage with the community and create public art.

“As an artist, I make my own work but I also feel like it’s valuable to create opportunities for people in the community that might not have access to be invited to contribute,” she said.

“They’ll feel a lot of pride I hope and a greater sense of belonging when they see their artwork out in the world.”

A showcase of local talent is looking for performers, artists and everything in between, ahead of the family-friendly show at The Basin Theatre at 2pm on Sunday 12 March.

Organiser Lynette Hayhurst said the volunteer-led event is focused on bringing the community together to celebrate the multitalented broader community.

“This is at The Basin Theatre, but we are looking at people who are from the eastern side of Melbourne who want to come and be a part of this,” she said.

“It’s going to be the young and the old, teenagers all the way up to a 70-year-old poet busting to come along.”

Submissions to perform at The Basin Talent Showcase close on Saturday 14 January or as soon as 20 acts have signed up.

Ms Hayhurst said she is looking for a wide variety of performers, from circus performers to singers.

“I want a broad range and a variety of different genres like country and western

blues, but also other skits and comedy,” she said.

“If we don’t have enough comedy I’ll certainly be doing some myself.”

ABC Radio presenter Jacinta Parsons will be MC for the showcase and a dress rehearsal will be held prior to the event.

Ms Hayhurst said the idea to host the showcase came to her after she organised two community picnics within the local community.

“I’ve done a talent show with a friend when we worked together in South Africa, and did that successfully two years in a row,” she said.

We went through those two years and all I want to do is just put together a positive event that showcases the best.”

New home for Kapi Art

By Tyler Wright Kalorama’s Kapi Art space has found a new home after suffering thousands of dollars worth of damage in August when a stolen Audi ploughed through the front of its gallery.

Kapi Art Space’s managing director Heather Bradbury decided to move into a smaller space on 7 Olinda-Monbulk Road in Olinda for three months after visiting the space with a friend a couple of weeks ago.

“I rang them up and said ‘I’m interested’... and straightaway, within ten minutes, they said, ‘yes, that’s fine, you can come in on Friday,” Heather said.

“That was Monday... that’s just changed my world.”

The new space will hold Heather’s art along with a couple of other artists, and will promote the classes held in Kalorama, including Pain and Pinot nights and masterclass workshops in photo realistic painting.

“The crazy thing is I’ve even got signage that was sitting at the back; I did double up, I don’t know why, when we first opened...so I can put some signs up that are just sitting there,” she said.

“I feel like there’s been a higher power looking after us.”

Friends and community members gathered last weekend to help Heather move tools from the Kalorama gallery and clean the new space in Olinda, with the support not going unnoticed.

Snakes start to slither in

By Callum Ludwig With warmer weather arriving (albeit in fits and spurts), the snakes of the Yarra Ranges are beginning to emerge.

A large snake was spotted in a Warburton backyard over the weekend and there have been three reports of dogs being bitten and occasionally killed by snakes in Wesburn, Wandin and Montrose so far this year.

Founder of wildlife conservation and education business Blacksnake Productions Michael Alexander said while snakes in the area are venomous and dangerous, they are an important part of the wildlife of the region.

“The animals have as much of a right to live here as we do, and it is actually illegal to remove or kill a snake yourself, with fines from $2000 to $5000, as well as being the number one reason for snake bites in Australia with more than 80 per cent of bites caused by people intentionally interacting with snakes,” he said.

“The equivalent of someone trying to catch or relocate a snake because it’s dangerous is like looking at a power point and thinking that’s dangerous, I will stick a fork in it. The best thing to do is either leave it alone if it’s near a bush block or call a snake catcher and if there is a dog involved, make sure they have snake avoidance training from professionals.”

If you find yourself in a situation where a snake is presenting a direct risk to you, an animal or others, or has remained in a location close to your home or business that is dangerous, it is best to call the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) wildlife emergency number at 136 186 and they will refer you on to your nearest local snake catcher. Avoid calling for a snake catcher unless absolutely necessary as snakes will likely leave you alone.

Mr Alexander said one of the best things to do to avoid being surprised by a snake is to keep your property nice and tidy.

“Try and make sure that you’re not providing habitat for snakes or leaving tarps, sheet metal wood lying about and if you have those and are trying to move them, always try and pull them towards you or drag it out so if there is a snake underneath, you aren’t standing over it,” he said.

“Always wear elbow-length gloves if you are putting your hands in and around vegetation or large bits of material so that all the way up your forearm is protected, as well as good

single time they are frightened or threatened.”

The small-eyed snake and white-lipped snake can also be found all throughout the Yarra Valley, with the former found around Launching Place in particular and the latter known to make a home of Lilydale Lake as well as in the Dandenong Ranges.

There has only been one fatal snake bite so far this year in Australia in Gayndah, Queensland and there were five in 2020 and 2021, including that of an 11-year-old boy who died after his father failed to seek medical attention.

Mr Alexander said if you find yourself very close to a snake, stay still.

“Watch the snake’s reaction because it will most try to get away, they are terrified of us. If it doesn’t move away, move back slowly and avoid sudden movements. If further away, still leave slowly and call a snake catcher,” he said.

“Before a bite even occurs, you need to be prepared. Have a mobile phone on you, and have snakebite bandages around, in your car, on your person if away from your car or house.

A first aid kit and a minimum of two pressure bandages are required for an adult’s leg.”

Mr Alexander recommends having SMART

bandages, invented specifically for snake and funnel-web spider bites. The extremely durable SMART Bandage is 2 metres long and 10cm wide, with a rectangle pictogram that stretches to a square to show when optimal tension has been reached.

“Don’t touch, wash or do anything to the bite site, especially if there is venom on the skin because that’s good and will help identify the type of snake, so don’t worry about chasing after and taking a photo of the snake to identify it,” Mr Alexander said.

“Start applying the bandage from the bottom of the limb if the bite is on the lower end of the limb, if you’re bitten above the joint, start up from the top of the limb, such as from the top and down to the elbow or from the ankle up the limb. Then immobilise it and stay as still as possible to help prevent the venom from spreading.”

Back in early March 2022, a Melbourne Water worker conducting maintenance work was winched through the air to hospital after being bitten by a snake in difficult terrain just outside Healesville.

Mr Alexander described four of the six different types of snake likely to be encountered throughout the Yarra Ranges.

“North of the old railway line from Yarra Glen to Healesville, and up through Dixons Creek is the only place you will get red-bellied black snakes, in alpine mountainous areas like the Black Spur, Kinglake, Warburton and Powelltown you’ll find highland copperheads and in low-lying areas such as Yarra Glen, Woori Yallock, Launching Place, Coldstream, Mt Evelyn, Montrose or Monbulk areas you’ll have the lowland copperhead,” he said.

While it is generally safe for pets to accompany their owners in the car, RSPCA Victoria urges people never to leave their animals unattended in a vehicle. Temperatures inside cars can rapidly reach unsafe levels - owners should be aware that it only takes six minutes for a dog or other animal to die in a hot car.

Treatment for heatstroke If you suspect your animal is suffering from heatstroke, RSPCA Victoria recommends emergency first aid is applied immediately to help normalise the

animal’s body temperature: 1. SPRAY or apply tepid/cool water onto their fur or skin.

2. Do not use ice or ice-cold water on your pet as it can potentially worsen the situation.

3. FAN the animal to maximise heat loss.

4. If possible, wet down the area around your pet to lower environmental temperatures.

5. Take your animal to the nearest VET immediately - even if it looks like they have recovered. The vet can assess for organ damage and provide life-saving treatment in serious situations.

Symptoms of Heatstroke The signs of heatstroke in animals are varied and may include: Relentless panting (increases as heatstroke progresses) Drooling or salivating Agitation or restlessness Very red or pale gums Bright red tongue Increased heart rate Breathing distress Vomiting, diarrhoea (possibly with blood) Signs of mental confusion, delirium Dizziness, staggering Lethargy, weakness Muscle tremors Seizures Collapsing and lying down Little to no urine production Coma

Dive in swimming skills

By Callum Ludwig According to a new survey conducted by the Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), almost half (47 per cent) of children missed out on swimming lessons and opportunities to develop water safety skills due to the Covid pandemic.

The National Child Health Poll, titled Water safety warning: Australian kids at risk, raises large concerns about the safety of children around water heading into this summer.

Life Saving Victoria (LSV)’s 2021-22 drowning report also shows that between 2012-13 to 2021-22, most drowning incidents within the Yarra Ranges local government area occurred at private swimming pools, and most in the Maroondah local government area occurred in bathtubs or spas.

LSV’s manager – research and evaluation Dr Hannah Calverley expressed sympathies to those whose loved ones were represented in this year’s drowning report.

“Despite slightly fewer fatalities than last year’s record-breaking toll of 61, the reality is that 53 lives were lost to drowning this year – that’s 53 too many. We’d like to send our sincere condolences to everyone affected,” she said.

“This is the second consecutive year that the Victorian drowning toll has bucked what had otherwise been a downward trend. We’re urging Victorians to be vigilant around water to help put an end to drownings and prevent further tragedy.”

The most at-risk age group for the Yarra Ranges were people aged 25 - to 64-years-old, and the main activities preceding death by drowning were walking or playing near water, Yarra Ranges Area Manager for Belgravia Leisure Darren Allen, which owns and operates pools such as the Yarra Centre, Monbulk Aquatic Centre, Kilsyth Centenary Pool and the Lilydale, Healesville and Belgrave outdoor pools, said swimming lessons have never been more important.

“We’ve missed millions of swimming lessons since the start of the pandemic, an extraordinary amount of opportunities for kids, as well as adults to learn the life skill that is swimming. People are aware that they’ve lost confidence in or entirely lost that skill over this time, ” he said.

“Thankfully in the Yarra Ranges, we have seen participation rates return really strong since we have really valued it. We have had our lessons booked out since September in the most popular timeslots for our classes.”

Mr Allen said the Yarra Ranges is really passionate about swimming, particularly in our pools.

“The damage that was sustained to the Monbulk Aquatic Centre during the storm event of June last year meant that the pool was closed for 15 months and it had a really huge impact on the community, but when we reopened on 1 September, we saw extraordinary rates of the local community reconnecting with the facility,” he said.

“We just really encourage parents in particular to be really engaged with their children’s swimming. The best thing they can do is participate and the second best thing they can do is make sure that they supervise their children whilst they’re in the water. If children are under five, they’ve got to be within arm’s reach and if they are under 10, they still have to be actively supervised.”

Half of the 2036 parents surveyed (49 per cent) were not aware that young children should always be within arm’s reach of an adult in the water and 44 per cent were not aware that drowning is often silent.

Paediatrician and Poll Director Dr Anthea Rhodes said the findings show there is a critical need to improve water safety knowledge among Australian parents.

“With drowning the leading cause of death in children aged less than 15 years in Australia, water safety and swimming skills are critically important. Our report found that while most Australian parents believe that children are never too young to start learning about water safety, there were some concerning gaps in parents’ knowledge about drowning risks,” she said.

“Half of the parents surveyed (49 per cent) falsely believe it takes more than 20 seconds for a child to drown. There were also misconceptions around flotation devices with a third of parents mistakenly believing that a lilo or inflated toy will prevent a child from drowning.”

According to the polling, one in five preschoolers (21 per cent) have ‘no swimming skills at all’, and almost a third of primary school-aged children have either ‘no swimming skills at all’ (4 per cent) or ‘beginner skills only’ (27 per cent) and one in 10 teenagers have ‘no swimming skills at all’ (2 per cent) or only beginner skills (7 per cent).

Dr Rhodes said they had found that one in six Australian children have never had a swimming lesson.

“The leading barrier was cost, followed by convenience and family logistics. Only half of children have accessed catch-up swimming lessons following the pandemic, leaving many children vulnerable and at risk of water-related accident and injury,” she said.

“As we enter summer, many families will be planning to have fun around the water. Supervision is the single most important protective action parents and carers can take to keep their children safe. We encourage all parents to remain vigilant and stay close to their children when around water this summer, for young children that means staying within arm’s reach.”

Be aware of river safety before taking a dip in summer

By Callum Ludwig With the weather warming up, the cool rivers around the Yarra Ranges can be an attractive prospect for a dip.

The Yarra River through Warburton, the Pound Bend Reserve in Warrandyte and Laughing Waters Swimming Hole in Eltham are all popular nearby spots for a swim but it’s important to stay safe in the water this summer.

Sean Marler spends a lot of time on the river as a kayaker from the Warburton and Alexandra River Dogs group (WARD) and said the key concern for people entering the water over the summer is a lack of understanding of the dangers that our inland rivers and lakes present.

“This is especially for people who are inexperienced, or who don’t have a basic swimming education. I can’t encourage you enough to go and learn how to swim, there are some great swimming schools in the area, doesn’t matter if you are three years old or 33 years old,” he said.

“Sadly, there are a lot of people who drown every year, and a lot of those deaths will be entirely preventable.”

According to Royal Life Saving Australia National Drowning Report 2022, 339 people lost their lives to drowning between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022. An estimated 686 further people experienced a non-fatal drowning incident. mailcommunity.com.au

“Logs and trees in moving waters present a real hazard to swimmers and paddlers because if you get swept onto those logs, the force of the water can hold you in those posi-

tions and once you tire you can be held under the water and drown,” he said.

“At the end of the day, all the experience in the world won’t save you if you do end up in the wrong place. Try to mitigate the risks and be conscious of where you’re choosing

to swim, check the water first by walking out and probing with a stick and try not to swim in moving water because of the risks of what’s under the water that you can’t see and keep out of those dangerous areas.”

Rivers and creeks had the highest percentage of the death count, at 34 per cent, with beaches miles off with 21 per cent in second.

Swimming and recreating were the top activity at the time of a drowning incident at 22 per cent.

Mr Marler said the third consecutive La Nina event also continues to make river conditions more dangerous.

“We’ve got really saturated soils and lots of inflows in our high alpine streams like the Yarra River, which is great for kayakers, but definitely poses big problems with more water and stronger river currents,” he said.

“Find an eddy, where the water is still and guarded upstream by some sort of barrier, whether it’s a log or a rock, that is deflecting the flow into the centre of the stream into the deepest part of the river, never swim alone, always in groups and avoid alcohol or a big feed right before swimming as well.”

An eddy is an area of swirling water that forms behind an obstacle like a boulder in a river. Often the water in the eddy will reverse the direction of flow and will flow upstream. Eddies are almost always formed on the inside of the corner when a river turns a corner.

Shop making a difference

By Tyler Wright An Op Shop in Belgrave has made a massive difference in the community after in its first full year of trading.

Carlottas Treasures was opened by Selby’s All Saints Anglican Church in 2020 to increase Christian connection within the Hills community, and since then has distributed $19,500 to 13 different charities including the Belgrave and Selby CFAs and the Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service.

By selling homewares, clothes and knickknacks the store has also been able to distribute clothing to the homeless through Upwey’s ‘Soupees’ organisation, has provided children’s clothing and bedding to St Kilda Mums in Clayton and donated old towels and blankets to a dog rescue group.

Store manager Judy deBruyn said the shop has been able to facilitate work experience for three students this year.

“We weren’t able to pay them, but they were still able to get that experience of being amongst people and working in a shopping environment...not that it’s high powered, but for some kids it’s a good start,” Ms deBruyn said.

Those looking for Christmas gifts this year can browse children’s toys, books and kitchen appliances available for purchase at a bargain price.

The group was also involved in a push in 2018 against Yarra Ranges Council’s decision to sell what was an old grammar school on 1632 Burwood Highway in Belgrave.

wood-Downward was still pleased with the outcome. “[The owners] found it was also an infant welfare centre at one stage, and they found panels with Disney characters on it... they had to remove those, so they asked us if we would like them and we have the historical society now,” she said.

At the centennary Shire of Ferntree Gully in 1989, local groups gathered over a weekend to show displays of the area to mark the occasion.

But to then councillor Peter Marke’s dismay, while there were historical groups in the area, there were none is his riding or in the south riding of the municipality.

Two years later, the South Riding Group, which would later be known as the Southern Sherbrooke Historical Society, would be formed, beginning a 30-year stint of collecting and sharing the history of the Belgrave, Belgrave Heights and South, Selby, Menzies Creek, Lysterfield and Narre Warren East areas.

“To begin with, we’d have a person each month talking about their history in the area, and we always recorded those,” Southern Sherbrooke Historical Society president Susan Heywood-Downard said.

“We’ve got about 170 tapes of those records, including one of the very elderly lady who was at the primary school in the First World War, so that when the school centennary occurred, they asked us if we’d write the history, and we had tape recording talking about sewing handkerchiefs to send to the soldiers,” Ms Heywood-Downard said.

She said local history happens in various ways; through community groups, schools, and even new people who move into, or are curious about, the area.

“People link their local history to their family history, and if they buy an old house, they want to know more about it, and and that leads to ‘well, what was the place like?’ so we spend quite a bit of time talking to people.”

The society is also looking to take photos of the Belgrave shops to track how they have changed throughout time.

The digitised information is available though Victorian Collections, and the group also has information stored at their site at 127 Colby Drive in Belgrave Heights.

Prepping your body Many people in the community feel anxious at the prospect of repeat immune challenges.

Especially the recurrence of Covid. We hear mixed reports from mild illness to extreme disease with fatal outcomes for some. But this need not make us afraid. In fact there is a lot one can do to bolster the immune response in a safe and integrative manner.

Let me share with you some effective tips.

Your immune system will respond well if your underlying health can be as robust as possible. If this is not the case it would be worth your while to improve your vitality in the following ways.

Eat brilliantly. Now is the best time to prioritise your diet and eat an array of nutritious whole foods. Aim for 15 different foods every day, all colours of the rainbow as this will give you an array of macro and micro nutrients to support health and vitality. Keep your hydration high with pure filtered water and utilise herb teas, cold pressed juices

The top 10 worst films of 2022 Every year has some film-related bad news and disappointments, but you might say that this year’s incidents were more provocative than most.

In March we had the slap heard across the world: Will Smith assaulted Chris Rock live on stage at the Oscars (and won Best Actor for King Richard a few minutes later). Rock cautiously discussed the slap in public, and Smith issued a slightly stiff apology over social media and received a ten-year ban from the Oscar Academy.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore star Ezra Miller has been indicted or accused of multiple felonies, including harassment, burglary, assault, running a compound full of drugs and guns, and an inappropriate, controlling relationship with a young Native American woman. Warner Bros is proceeding with the Flash movie (despite Miller as its problematic lead), and yet they cancelled the Batgirl movie, wasting $70 million in the process.

Don’t Worry Darling was fraught with behind-the-scenes drama: director Olivia Wilde and star Florence Pugh reportedly did not get along, Wilde may be lying about a major casting decision, and Harry Styles is rumoured to have spat on Chris Pine at a promotional event (this didn’t actually happen).

Morbius was universally panned as one of the worst superhero movies ever made, but memes from trolls and ironic fans (“It’s Morbin’ time”) somehow convinced Sony to rerelease Morbius in cinemas, where it bombed to nobody’s surprise but Sony’s.

The Netflix drama Blonde was widely condemned for its heavily-fictionalised and exploitative portrayal of Marilyn Monroe’s life.

with an inverse severe flaw: the former has a bad opening, the latter a bad ending.

On a sadder note, actor Kevin Conroy died of intestinal cancer on November 10. With his formidable gravitas and sensitivity, Conroy’s voice performances in Batman: The Animated Series and the Arkham video games are widely regarded as the definitive portrayal of Batman, and he is deeply missed.

Here are my picks for the top ten worst films of 2022.

10.The Wonder. A prime example of how one bad decision can crash an otherwise great film. The Wonder is tense, well-acted and beautifully shot, but a prologue explicitly describing The Wonder as a film instantly kills any engagement with the plot, as we are now acutely aware of its fakeness.

9. BigBug. A painful inclusion, as I love director Jean-Pierre Jeunet. BigBug is charming and vibrant, but it’s very sitcommy, far too long and a bit too silly for its own good.

8. Jurassic World: Dominion. Features some cool set-pieces and very impressive practical creature effects, but the characters are cardboard cut-outs, the pacing is disjointed, and the plot muddies its own lore and

carries very little real tension.

7. Mother/Android. Features strong performances, sound design and suspense, but also generic designs for its robot antagonists, excessive exposition and yet flimsy worldbuilding.

6. Dual. Has some clever ideas and funny moments, but the overall film is punishingly flat and low-energy. In her double-role as Sara and her clone, Dual wastes Karen Gillan twice.

5. Morbius. A joyfully over-the-top performance from Matt Smith is the only source of life in a dry, meandering thriller with empty characters and incoherent action.

4. Moonfall. A work of disaster porn too hollow to amaze, the characters are bland or obnoxious (or both) and the plot barely makes any sense (and is full of tremendously bad science).

3. Loveland. A tedious sci-fi drama with glacial pacing, no chemistry between the leads, a criminal misuse of Hugo Weaving and an incredibly light, vague sense of conflict. The best part is the cyberpunk cityscape, which feels ripped wholesale from Blade Runner.

2. The Next 365 Days, and 1. 365 Days: This Day. It feels appropriate to discuss these films – sequels to the worst film of 2020 – together. Both are staggeringly vain, poorly-acted slogs in which almost nothing ever happens, choked with pop songs and devoid of passion despite the explicit sex scenes. They’re basically the same boring yet infuriating movie, and are together the worst movie of 2022.

A story of healing PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN A review of The Museum of Broken Things

by Lauren Draper This is the fourth in a series of six reviews featuring the 2022 Readings Young Adult Book Prize.

The Museum of Broken Things, by Melbourne-based author Lauren Draper, is a story of healing from loss and grief.

The protagonist Reece is in her final year of high school. She has recently lost her grandmother, a former renowned surgeon who once inspired her dream of pursuing a medical career.

Worse, having moved from the metropolis to a small country town, Reece desperately misses her old life. We learn that something occurred, causing the teenager to have left her best friend Nina without saying goodbye. As she struggles to make new friends, The Terrible Thing That Happened remains a secret.

Another unknown is what Reece intends to do with the large collection of historical medical books left by her grandmother. Now that she sees herself failing school and having no clear future and career, not to mention becoming a brilliant physician, she contemplates giving away the incredibly rare and valuable medical texts.

But the story’s backbone lies in the mystery surrounding an unusual artefact among Reece’s inheritance. In the process of trying to find out what it is – and why her beloved Nan specifically gifted it to her – the teenager discovers a series of clues that connect her grandmother to the death of some young women in the 1940s.

Reece’s investigation not only unravels a dark page of the town’s history, but also reveals how the past can and continues to impact on the present. More importantly, the journey helps her realise The Terrible Thing That Happened is not her fault. That she is perfectly capable of forging a new life ahead, thanks to the love and support of her family and friends.

The Museum of Broken Things is a fine and fluent read, conveying a sense of humour and resilience even when Reece feels emotionally distraught. Her friends are some of the most colourful and endearing characters in the book, each with their own unique problems to deal with in terms of family and future.

Perhaps the cleverest bit of writing is that Reece persistently tries to contact her other friend Willow, which can appear as a flaw in the plot. When The Terrible Thing That Happened is finally revealed, any careless reader would think it unplausible that Reece is so desperate for a response from Willow.

But when one examines the text really, really carefully – which this reviewer eventually learned to do – it becomes clear that the “flaw” only exists to illustrate the overwhelming sense of loneliness and isolation that Reece experiences. It is moments like her pleading for Willow’s help that demonstrate her powerlessness to either go back or move forward.

The Museum of Broken Things is a heartfelt and heart-warming debut, about young adults losing their way yet somehow finding the courage to map it again. A great example of how something that looks like a “curse” can turn out to be a blessing. mailcommunity.com.au

Family affair for Monbulk Cricket is a great sport for many reasons, one is that it enables people of all ages to play together including family members.

On the weekend Monbulk Cricket Club had many examples, including: ‘Blenkiron Big Bash at The Basin:’ Dan Blenkiron got to play in the 4ths with his three sons Ethan, Sammy and Will. They all batted in the top 4 and all made runs. Father/ Son- Brendan and Connor Hooker got to play in the 1st XI which is a rare and special occasion. Brothers Jake and Todd Mackay played their first se-

nior game together in the 3rds. Another special moment in the 5ths when Grace Emmett got to bat with her big brother Brodie for the first time.

Another great weekend of cricket for the Hawks with five out of six wins on Saturday to the 16s, 2s, 3s, 4s and 5s.

Solid weekend for Upwey-Tecoma cricket players It was a solid weekend of results for the Upwey-Tecoma Cricket Club, with three of the men’s teams tasting victory, along with the Under 16s side.

The 1st XI travelled to the Ferntree Gully Footballers, looking to make it three wins on the trot.

Captain Jackson Waters won the toss and elected to bowl first, with Steve Collard breaking through early with a sharp caught and bowled.

The Footballers batted patiently to build a platform from which to launch at 1/60 after 20 overs. However some tight Tiger bowling and the regular fall of wickets through the back half of their innings saw them all out for a below-par 125 in the final over.

English import Jules Whetstone finished best of the bowlers with 4/22, while Cameron Wheeler claimed 2/17.

The Tigers were never really troubled in their chase of the small target, reaching 3/126 with 5 overs to spare. Wheeler finished on 47 not out and Waters was unbeaten on 40 to help cement Upwey-Tecoma’s spot in the top four.

The Women’s XI headed up the hill to take on Olinda. The Tigers could only manage 54 with the bat, with Nic Wachter top-scoring with 19.

Olinda passed the total easily, losing only 4 wickets, with Kaitlyn Roleff the best of the bowlers finishing with 2/13.

The 2nd XI hosted the Footballers, romping to a comfortable victory on the back of a Chris Jewell masterclass.

Jewell finished with 4/17 and 55 not out for the match, with the Footballers all out for 104 and the Tigers passing the score without loss. Young spinner Darcy Whitten was also influential with 3/20.

The 3rd XI chalked up their second win for the year defeating the Ferntree Gully Blues.

Tiger openers Rhett Chapman (60) and Bon Sullivan (65*) combined for an 130 run partnership to make light work of the run chase.

Big win by any standard

By Jack Rollings It was round 8 for the midweek pennant and the weather was in-betweenish, with jackets on, off and on again. The breeze was at times refreshingly cool then biting cold.

Monbulk 1 played at home against Upwey/Tecoma. Monbulk lost to them in the first round by one lousy shot. Not this time.

Jim Bras’ team dropped a 3 on the first end and then shook themselves into the game. By the fifth end, they had a 7-shot lead. After that, Upwey won some ends, including some multiples, but the Monbulk wins were bigger. In the back half, the margin doubled and Monbulk won the rink 31 shots to 17.

Brian Smith’s team had the close one. Any time that one team grabbed a multiple, the other team would reciprocate the next end.

Scores were level on several occasions. With just two ends to go, Monbulk was down by 3 shots. Then Brian’s team picked up a 2, to be just 1 shot down with one end to go. On the last end, they managed to snare a big 4-shotter, and there were no ends left for Upwey. Monbulk won the rink 28 shots to 25.

Eric Markham’s team picked up a big 5-shotter on the first end and that set their tone for the day. The Monbulk team dropped only four ends, and yes, they included clangers of a 3 and a 5, but the Monbulk wins included one 3, four 4s, and four 5s. Monbulk won the rink with a huge 49 shots to 11.

Overall Monbulk won 108 shots to 53 with all three rinks up. A big win by any standard.

Monbulk has now jumped to the second spot on the ladder, just one point above Lilydale who they play next week, at Lilydale. There’ll be a lot riding on that match.

Monbulk 2 played away against Narre Warren 3 Graeme Goller’s team trailed early in the day but picked up a massive 7-shotter on the fifth end to get back in the game. By the lunch break, they were in front with a useful margin.

In the back half, Narre Warren won more ends, but Monbulk won a 5-shotter to maintain the lead to the finish line. Monbulk won the rink 27 shots to 20.

Peter Lee’s team had a close game all day.

With three ends to go, they were leading by two shots and Monbulk was holding a narrow lead on the big overall board. Monbulk dropped a 3 and then a 2 so that the big board then had Monbulk leading by just 2 shots, with one end to go and the other rinks all finished. A loss of more than 1 shot would have meant an overall draw, or worse, a loss. On the last end, Monbulk managed to contain the loss to just a single shot which meant a win for Monbulk on the big board even though they lost this rink 15 to 19.

Tim Stapleton’s team won twelve ends and looked to be the stronger team for most of the day. However, they dropped a 6 and a 3 in the front half and both times that meant they gave up the lead. The race home was close and Monbulk finished with momentum but could pick up only singles on the final ends. Mon-

Overall Monbulk won 58 shots to 57 with one rink up. They have also jumped into the second spot on the ladder, but it is very close between all the top four spots. They will be aiming for a home-ground final, so the run home will be crucial. Next week Monbulk plays at home against Berwick 4. They have had only two wins this season, so it may be a chance to solidify Monbulk’s position.

Monbulk lost five ends in a row, then won seven ends in a row. Going into the seventeenth end, Monbulk trailed by 6 shots. But they managed to win the remaining ends, including a big 6-shotter. Monbulk took the lead and then sealed the win with a couple of doubles to finish. Monbulk won the rink 21 shots to 15.

Graeme Seymour‘s team dropped a 5-shot

clanger on the first end and that proved to be the difference in the final scores. After that start, Monbulk won more ends and, with two ends to go, had a 1 shot lead. Unfortunately, Boronia finished strongly and won a couple of 3s. Monbulk lost the rink 16 to 21.

Peter Donders’ team had a low-scoring match, with neither side conceding big numbers. Scores were level around the lunch break.

Then Monbulk scored the only multiple for the day with a 3-shotter. In the run home, Monbulk took more ends and maintained the lead to win the rink 17 shots to 13.

Overall Monbulk won 54 shots to 49 with two rinks up. They are fourth on the ladder with equal wins and losses. Next week they play at home against Lilydale 3 who are undefeated on top of the ladder. But this time the game is on Monbulk’s home turf.

Monbulk’s Saturday team slips off the top of the ladder

By Jack Rollings It was a hot high 20s, and the bowlers weren’t used to it. It was a day for sunblock and sun hats and drinking lots of water.

Monbulk 1 played away against Donvale.

Before this round, Donvale had won just one game and was sitting on the bottom of the ladder. Monbulk was on top. The Donvale green is a sand-filled synthetic with a base as hard as concrete. It is not an easy green to play with finesse but the home side played it well and it wasn’t straightforward for Monbulk.

Brian Smith’s team had a close game for most of the day and won ten ends. They led in the first quarter, then dropped three big ends in the second quarter, to trail by 6 shots.

They stayed in touch in the third quarter, then came back strongly in the last quarter to level the scores on the sixteenth and eighteenth ends. Unfortunately, the last three ends went Donvale’s way and Monbulk lost the rink 16 shots to 20.

Jim Bras’ team won nine ends in a lowscoring game where no clangers were given by either side. Just before the cuppa break, Donvale snared five ends in a row to take a 7 shot lead at the halfway mark. After the break, Monbulk won more ends but Donvale had managed to grab six doubles to Monbulk’s three doubles and Monbulk couldn’t make up the difference. Monbulk lost the rink 12 shots to 18.

Karen Rice’s team has had a dream run so far this season. But the Donvale team weren’t intimidated by that reputation. In the first third, Monbulk was just 2 shots down. They tried short ends when they won the mat, but Donvale knew their green very well and played competitively at any length.

Monbulk won eight ends but the losses included two 3s, two 4s and a nightmare 7-shot clanger on the last end. Monbulk lost 34 MAIL

It was a day for sunblock and sun hats and drinking lots of water over the weekend for Monbulk bowlers.

Eric Markham’s team had a close tussle in the front half but drew away in the run home, winning the final four ends. They won twelve ends all together and, in their losses, gave away mainly singles, with just one double.

Their wins included five doubles and a couple of 3s. Monbulk won the rink 21 shots to 10.

Overall, Monbulk lost 66 shots to 80 with just one rink up. Monbulk has now slipped off the top position into the second spot.

Next week Monbulk plays at home against Ferntree Gully in the final round before the summer break. Monbulk won at their previous meeting at Ferntree Gully so they will be trying hard to repeat the result on their

own Monbulk ground.

Monbulk 2 played at home against Willow Lodge 1. The recently deep-washed greens at Monbulk were behaving differently for a couple of weeks, but now the home sides have settled into the refreshed surface and are happy to take the home-ground advantage whenever possible.

Peter Lee’s team had a strong day out.

They dropped only seven ends and lost nothing more than 2s. Their wins included three 3s, three 4s and a 5. At the halfway mark they were already 14 shots up, and in the run home, they broke right away, winning the final five ends with 12 shots. Monbulk won the rink 35 shots to 11.

Alan Hamilton’s team struggled in the front half and trailed by 7 shots at the break.

But they staged a good comeback after the break to level on the twelfth end. Then Willow Lodge grabbed 10 shots over the next four ends to again leave Monbulk trailing.

Then Alan’s team won the final five ends to almost get over the line, but not quite. They lost the rink 23 shots to 24.

Don Barnetson’s team had a close contest all day. The scores were level several times and the lead changed hands several times.

With two ends to go, Monbulk was leading by a single shot. Then Willow Lodge managed to grab the final two ends and Monbulk had to settle for a loss on the rink 17 shots to 19.

Graeme Goller’s team continued their strong performances. They won fourteen ends including two 3s and four 4s. At the break, they were already 15 shots up and in the back half and they grew the margin and won the rink 31 shots to 10.

Overall Monbulk won with a good margin of 106 shots to 64, with two rinks up. They are still third on the ladder. Next week they play away under the roof against Narre Warren who is just 8 ladder points above, in second place. Both sides have six wins and two losses, so this will be a battle for the second spot.

Cup shot for baseballers

By Parker McKenzie 16-year-old Jack Ratcliffe has had a huge year of baseball — winning a division one senior premiership and representing Australia in the United States to name a few achievements — and he will cap off the year by playing in the u18 World Cup Qualifiers for Team Australia Baseball.

When the Star Mail spoke to Ratcliffe on Friday 9 December, he was preparing to fly to New Zealand for the qualifiers, where he will play Guam and New Zealand.

He said he grew up watching his father Simon play the game and his aim is to play college baseball in the United States before going professional.

“Qualifying for the under-18s World Cup would mean playing with the best players in Australia, against the best players in the world,” he said.

“It’s been my dream to play for Australia.”

Ratcliffe plays for the seniors at Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club, cementing himself in the team’s starting lineup this season as the club won its first premiership in 20 years.

He said there are challenges when playing against adults as a teenager.

“They’ve got much more muscle than you, but you’ve got to know what you can and can’t do and stick with the basics,” he said.

“I’d say the strongest parts of my game are my fielding and batting, hitting is a lot harder than fielding I find.”

In August, Ratcliffe qualified to represent Australia at the Senior League World Series in South Carolina after winning the National Championships with Eastern Athletics. The Australian representative side finished 5th in the tournament, beating Guam and Canada before losing to Panama in the semi-final.

Ratcliffe said it was one of three moments to remember in 2022 for him.

“Winning MVP at the u16 national tournament in July and getting to play with my mates in the World Series in the United States were two of my best moments,” he said.

Ratcliffe is aiming to play college baseball before going professional.

Ratcliffe qualified to represent Australia at the Senior League World Series in South Carolina after winning the National Championships with Eastern Athletics.

Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club first team coach Donovan Hendricks, a former Major League Baseball player, said Ratcliffe is one of the best players in Australia at his age level.

“Playing seniors at his age isn’t big of a

thing, but I suppose the uncommon part for Jacky is that he’s playing division one firsts,” he said.

“A lot of kids his age are playing in the second division, still learning their craft and increasing their ability. In his case, he’s playing in the best competition and level in Victoria.”

Ratcliffe said there one thing playing under Hendricks has taught him is to stay composed.

“His biggest thing is you need to stay composed and know what you are going to do,” he said.

“It’s all about getting the job done.”

Hendricks said Ratcliffe has the ability to play Major League Baseball if he continues to apply himself.

“I think he’s on his way, he’s obviously still very young and has a lot of maturing to do physically and learning for his game,” he said.

“We are all just really proud of him. He’s very coachable, he’s always asking questions and trying to learn. He’s come a long way and it’s a huge achievement, but we are also looking forward to where he’s taking this.”

Calls for Council to repair lights at Emerald Tennis Club

By Tyler Wright The Emerald Tennis Club is calling for Cardinia Shire Council to act urgently on lighting upgrades at their courts at Worrell Reserve, amid fears the club will struggle to entice new members throughout the Summer season.

In the 2022/23 Capital Works Budget, the council allocated $312,000 towards upgrading the lights at the Emerald Tennis Club, with the State Government announcing that they will be contributing an additional almost $150,000 towards the tennis court upgrade works. But after an initial assessment following a Tennis Victoria facility audit in late 2021, the club is still waiting for new lights to be installed after some were removed as part of this assessment, with five courts now unusable at night due to a lack of lighting.

Emerald Tennis Club’s night tennis convenor Michael Owens said being without the lights for at least 12 months makes it “ difficult for [the] club to survive”.

With around nine teams competing in the Knox City Night Tennis Association, and 36 players, a large amount of Emerald competitors have had to relocate to Monbulk Tennis Club or Selby Tennis Club to play their weekly matches. For Owens, it’s not the loss of club revenue that is his main concern, but the inability to be able to promote the club coming into Summer.

“It’s not the money, It’s more the the issue that we can’t promote the club for anyone that wants to come and play…I’ve done a lot of ringing around and everyone’s been supportive and helped us out, but I just don’t think it needs to happen if council was more proactive,” he said.

“This funding application was successful, which was then announced in October 2022,” the spokesperson said. “A draft of the

detailed design for the project is expected to be provided to both the Emerald Tennis Club and Worrell Reserve Community Asset Committee for consultation early in the new year, with the project put out to tender soon after.

“Council understands the impact that these works are having on the Hills community and on the tennis club, and is working hard to ensure that the project is completed in a timely manner.”
