Two contend Libs’ top job A Victorian Liberal leadership contender has dropped out of the race, setting up a two-way battle between hopefuls Brad Battin and John Pesutto. Polwarth MP Richard Riordan confirmed last Thursday 1 December he would withdraw his candidacy and throw his support behind Mr Battin to replace Matthew Guy after Saturday’s crushing election defeat. “The Liberal Party needs to appeal to our metropolitan growth areas and regional cities,” he wrote on social media. Plea for funds Cardinia Shire Council and Yarra Ranges Council sent its mayors to Canberra last week to meet with the Federal Government about the commitment to fund $300 million to seal roads in the hills. Cardinia Shire Council mayor Tammy Radford and Yarra Ranges Council mayor Jim Child called for the Federal Government to confirm its commitment to fully fund the ‘Sealing the Hills’ and ‘Roads for our Community’ programs across the two municipalities. In November, Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood slammed the Federal Government for “scrapping” the $300m road sealing project for the hills in the 2022-23 budget. STORY PAGE 7

Local service providers and organisations are working hard to provide for struggling families in the lead up to Christmas. Cost of living pressures have left many families scraping the bottom of the bank for Christmas, as more people turn to the Pakenham Salvation Army and Windermere Child

and Family Services in Pakenham for help. Salvation Army case worker Sam Gardiner said one of the main stressors in the community was rental increases. “That’s really impacting people to meet their everyday financial needs,” Ms Gardiner said. “The cost of gas, fuel and electricity has also gone up, so there’s nothing left in the kitty at the end of the week.”
