David Farrelly, Liberal candidate for Pakenham.

Emma Vulin, Labor candidate for Pakenham.

Jordan Crugnale, Labor candidate for Bass.

Aaron Brown, Liberal candidate for Bass.

On a knife’s edge Labor is narrowly in front of the Liberal Party in the seats of Pakenham and Bass following Saturday’s state election. Labor’s Emma Vulin is only eight votes ahead of the Liberal Party’s David Farrelly in the new Pakenham electorate. On a two-candidate preferred basis, Ms Vulin currently has 15,939 votes (50.01 per cent), while Mr Farrelly is just eight votes behind on 15,931 (49.99 per cent). Both candidates said they felt confident they could come through with the win.

Meanwhile, in the new seat of Berwick, long-serving MP Brad Battin received 48 per cent of first preference votes and claimed victory with 56.3 per cent of the two-party preferred vote, based on counted votes as of 4pm, Tuesday 29 November. The former Gembrook MP said he was “strongly considering” running for the Liberal leadership position, after Matt Guy stepped down from the position following a second failed election campaign. In Bass, all but three Bass Coast Shire towns favoured Ms Crugnale on a two-party preferred basis. The towns were Rhyll, San Remo and Bass. Ms Crugnale was a Bass Coast Shire councillor and mayor. But the Liberals’ Aaron Brown received the majority of votes in all of the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire towns which fall under the electorate - except for Clyde.

Pakenham Upper and Toomuc Valley were the only two voting centres to see the Liberal Party come out on top on a two-party preferred basis. The other 10 centres saw voters favour Labor.
