Eleventh day On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Upwey-Belgrave RSL welcomed members and guests to honour those who have fought and lost their lives for Remembrance Day. Alongside President Anthony Stewart, Senior Vice President Fred Schmager welcomed guests, RSL members and veterans to the service on Friday 11 November.

“They went to songs to the battle, they were young, straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow,” Mr Fred Schmager said, reading a part of the poem For the Fallen.

“They were staunch to the end against odds

uncounted, they fell with their faces to the foes.”

Mr Schmager welcomed Minister Matt Cutler from the Tecoma Uniting Church to lead those in attendance in the Lord’s Prayer.

“In the scripture, we hear the lines no one has greater love than this, than he who would lay their life down for their friends,” Minister Cutler said.

“Today we remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, so I ask you to join me in a prayer known to many of you even if not used that would have been on the lips of many of our friends and family who have gone before us.”

Following The Last Post, Mr Schmager read the poem the Inquisitive Mind of a Child.

“I think you’ll find this poem is very apt given our current world events that we’re experiencing at the moment,” he said.

“We will now lay the wreaths in Remembrance and therefore call upon President Anthony Stewart to lay a wreath on behalf of the RSL and all veterans.”

Wreaths were laid on behalf of Casey MP Aaron Violi and the Merchant Navy, and by Streeton Ward Councillor Andrew Fulligar on behalf of Yarra Ranges Council and Monbulk MP James Merlino on behalf of the state government.

Millions for major works

By Tyler Wright Sherbrooke’s historical Burnham Beeches, first owned by philanthropist Alfred Nicholas, is finally set to be restored to its former glory through a $100 million development after decades of false starts.

Owner Trenerry Consortium has gained the support from global hospitality company Six Senses in its first Australian venture to deliver a masterplan for the historic site, detailing three experiential zones; the mansion and spa, the village green and the hilltop retreat.

The village green will boast a steakhouse, bake house, brew house and providore around a central gathering space, with 82 glamping spots for visitors in a non-permanent site tucked into the topography of the area.

The masterplan also includes plans for the nicholas hall and library, a restaurant, wellness retreat, pool house and guestrooms, with the Alfred Nicholas mansion and surrounding gardens being refurbished in accordance with the existing permit.

A heritage permit application currently sits with Heritage Victoria, approval of which is essential to delivering the long term conservation of the property, including the historic mansion.

Since 1982, the property has had nine previous owners who each have sold the property after five years or less due to a lack of commercial viability as a consequence of the hefty restoration cost of the mansion and existing permit limitations.

According to Yarra Ranges Tourism CEO Simon O’Callaghan, this investment into Burnham Beeches has come at “absolutely the right time”.

“When you get a new hotel of critical mass like what’s planned here at Burnham Beeches, you not only see a really big pool in the visitor market for that hero product, but you see a really strong flow on to all the surrounding accommodation as well,” he said.

“Evidence would tell us, from other hotel developments in other regions, that when you get a new anchor drawcard hotel, everyone benefits; so the whole economy should get a boost from a development of this scale.”

Trenerry Director Robert Dicintio said a key strategy of the consortium continues to be “to

“We are looking forward to presenting the plans to our passionate neighbours on the 14th of November, where there will be an opportunity to discuss the elements of the plans,” Mr Dicintio said.

“With the commitment by Six Senses firmly in place, and a vision and masterplan which reflects feedback from stakeholders, the only hold up to construction commencement will be with awaiting the review process by the various authorities.”

The principal architect from Woods Bagot and local resident Bronwyn McColl envision a design direction that rejoices in the spirit of the Dandenong Ranges and architect Harry Norris’ original vision, creating an authentic country experience for both the public and hotel guests.

“The design, programming and activation will be influenced by Burnham Beeches’ historical, social and ecological traits and patterns, as well as respond to feedback from the local community,” Ms McColl said.

“As a family, we are so excited at the prospect of our beloved family home finally being restored. “Alfred Nicholas was all about giving back to others. He was passionate about his gardens and local fauna, his Jersey herd, and the beautiful Art Deco design of his home. We are more than delighted that new plans are underway for this project to bring Burnham Beeches back to life.”

Australian builders Hamilton Marino will manage the restoration and build.

Halloween on the Green makes return in all its glory Halloween on the Green made a triumphant return to Ferny Creek Reserve on Sunday the 30th of October, after a two-year hiatus.

Hosted by the Philanthropic Collective, the day was a roaring success with close to five thousand costume clad patrons returning Highlights included rock royalty, Dave Graney and Clare Moore hitting the main stage along with hills favorites, Charlie Bedford, and local legends Daisy West. Fletchers and Bendigo Bank hosted the best dressed competition with over 10K of prizes on offer with winners announced by James Merlino MP. Event Director and festival creator, Andrew Fillip-Gautier said “mother nature heard our call and came out to shine after the proceeding two weeks were fraught with rain”.

“Over 160 volunteers came through the site on the day while just about all vendors sold out. We introduced a waste management system which saved 460kg of wastage from landfill on the day, something we should all be extremely proud of,” Mr FillipGautier said.

The show stopping crowd favourite was without doubt the mayor’s parade sponsored

by Le Pine funerals, Ferntree Gully.

The parade was led by Los Torros mariachi band, with Yarra Ranges Council proxy mayor, Councillor Tim Heenan cheered on from inside the horse draw vintage hearse.

The parade was a true sceptical of movement and colour as it made its way around the reserve followed by stilt walkers, circus acts and the fantastical Tanbura Belly Dancers.

Total blood eclipse

By Tyler Wright Yarra Ranges locals took out their cameras to capture a red tinge in the sky on the night of Tuesday 8 November, as the moon entersed its last total blood eclipse until 2025.

Mount Burnett Observatory Society committee member Jacquie Milner said while there is an eclipse season every five months, we do not always get to experience a total lunar eclipse where the earth, moon and sun align, with the only light reaching the moon’s surface passing first through Earth’s atmosphere.

“There was a total lunar eclipse back in May, but Australia was on the wrong side of the world to see it, and there won’t be another one for another three years as it turns out, so we’re making an effort to see this one” Ms Milner said.

“It’s not that we won’t see any lunar eclipses ever again, it’s just a bit of a break in between seeing a total one; and that’s where we get the nice colour as it passes through the full shadow of the earth.”

Some Yarra Ranges residents were able to enjoy the total lunar eclipse, also known as the blood eclipse due to its hue, from around 9.15pm to 10.40pm, when the moon was fully shadowed (also known as umbra).

However Ms Milner said umbra would be low in the sky for people watching from the north east horizon.

Ms Milner said statistics show there are more solar eclipses compared to lunar events, but we are more likely to see a lunar eclipse in our lifetime because it covers more of the earth.

Passengers are asked to allow extra time for their journey as trains get back into position to resume the normal timetable.

The CFA undertook planned burns in Kalorama between 5.30pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday 9 November.

Firefighters ignited candling burn at Kalorama Oval, burning tree bark to reduce an ember attack during a bushfire, in partnership with Yarra Ranges Council.

CFA vegetation management officer Joshua Hodges said the planned burns are an attempt to reduce the amount of infrastructure damage in the case of a bushfire, with Kalorama Oval being an informal evacuation area.

“If a fire were to start and move into that area, candling, which is burning off the bark, would actually prevent a lot of that bark burning and showering embers down onto the infrastructure,” Mr Hodges said.

“We are planning next autumn to undertake some burning.”

If you don’t fancy a democracy sausage and want to skip the lines ahead of Election Day on Saturday 26 November, there are several options for early voting.

Early voting opened on Monday 14 November and ends Friday 25 November, with no reason required to vote early.

VEC Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately said early voters in every district will still be able to vote at an early voting centre from 9am Monday morning, despite ballot paper printing delays and wet weather affecting a small number of voting centres.

“It’s disappointing that printing delays, combined with the wet weather has impacted our ability to open every early voting centre on time. However, the 21 early voting centres affected are supplementary early voting centres we added to our standard complement this year,” Mr Gately said.

“Importantly, there will still be at least one early voting centre in every district throughout the State opening as normal at 9 am.”

Bayswater EVC is located at the 2nd/3rd Bayswater Scouts Hall, Station Street, Bayswater.

It has limited or no wheelchair access.

235-237 Stud Road, Wantirna South will be open as a voting centre from 8.30am to 6pm on most days, aside from the following: 8.30am to 8pm on Tuesday 15, Thursday 17 and Thursday 24 November.

It has wheelchair access with assistance.

Residents of the above electorates can vote in different electorates, but it may take longer than usual.

Police seize stolen vehicle Two people were arrested after the warrant was executed at a Canterbury Road address in Bayswater just after 4.30pm Tuesday 8 November.

The warrant follows an investigation into an alleged burglary that occurred at a Wantirna home last month. Police seized a stolen vehicle located on the property.

A 31-year-old woman was arrested and is currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Whilst police were executing the search warrant, a man arrived at the home in another allegedly stolen vehicle.

The male driver was subsequently arrested.

The vehicle was allegedly stolen during a burglary in Dandenong North late October.

Yarra Ranges Council elects mayor and deputy

By Tyler Wright Sassafrass resident and founder of Mums of the Hills Belinda Young has received the title of Victoria Local Hero in the 2023 Australian of the Year awards.

Four Victorian award recipients were announced on Tuesday 8 November in a ceremony at Melbourne’s Government House in the presence of Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau AC, Governor of Victoria.

Ms Young received the award for her connecting mothers in the Yarra Ranges, both online and face-to-face, during 2021’s storm and events and the pandemic.

With around 5,000 members, Mums of the Hills has been a platform for shared resources and communications during the 2020 and 2021 pandemic lockdowns for local businesses, including mental health and food directories.

Ms Young has also advocated for better NBN, infrastructure and childcare services, and collaborated with key agencies, organisations and groups to help her community

respond to and recover from natural disasters.

Victoria’s award recipients included paediatrician and co-founder of the Health Awareness Society of Australia Dr Angraj Khillan who was named Victoria Australian of the Year, and Young Australian of the Year Darcy McGauleyBartlett who was recognised for his work as as an advocate for Indigenous health care in prisons.

Victoria’s Senior Australian of the Year was paediatrician and founding director of the Centre for Community Child Health Professor Frank Oberklaid AM. National Australia Day Council CEO Karlie Brand congratulated the Victorian award recipients.

“The Victorian award recipients show inspirational leadership and care for others,” said Ms Brand.

“We look forward to welcoming them to Canberra for the national Australian of the Year Awards to be announced on 25 January 2023.”

Jim Child has been re-elected as Mayor of Yarra Ranges Council after a council meeting on Tuesday 8 November, with Cr Sophie Todorov serving as his Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Child, Councillor of O’Shannassy Ward, said it an honour to serve his fourth term after being re-elected unanimously by his fellow councillors.

“I’m proud to be given the role again with unanimous support from the counsellors, I think what that reflects is that we’ve got a strong council that works together collaboratively,” he said.

“It put us in a great space to push forward with our council plan which we’ve put a lot of work into and will create benefit to the community.”

Mayor Child was first elected to Yarra Ranges Council in 2012, serving as mayor for the first time from 2012 to 2013. Previously he was elected to the now-defunct Shire of Upper Yarra in 1982 and was shire president in 1985.

He said Yarra Ranges Council has achieved significant accomplishments since he first joined a decade ago.

“We had the introduction of rate capping, we’ve managed through that and it shows you what we can do and we’ve done some magnificent things on the

ground,” he said.

“The rivers and ridges project, the mountain bike destination and the Yarra Valley trail are significant achievements that are progressing into the future.”

Mayor Child said once the projects are delivered, council is “looking at an annual return of $48 million.”

“That’s a tremendous boost to business, but also gives jobs to local people,” he said.

“Those visitations that come into the Yarra Ranges because we are the lungs of Melbourne, the largest green wedge and I believe our future is tourism.”

Cr Todorvov was elected as deputy mayor and is serving in the role for the first time.

Deputy Mayor Todorov said in a statement she looked forward to working even more closely with the community and taking on the challenges that lay ahead.

“Thank you everyone and thank you for my nomination …it means so much,” Cr Todorov said.

“I look forward to having a more visible presence across the municipality and collaborating with our traditional owners and custodians of Yarra Ranges, our residents and also our State and Federal Government representative to ensure we do make the best decision and what’s in the best interests of our community.”

Yarra Ranges Council works will include additional footpath, curb and channel, drainage, tree planting and landscaping, integrated safety barriers and seating, supported by $275,000 from the Victorian Government’s Outdoor Activation Program.

Owner of restaurant Tin Pan Alley Foodsmiths Mark Filgate said he hopes the new precinct creates a “positive space, not just for the businesses but for the community itself” that will “encourage more and more people to utilise the facilities”.

“That will have knock on effects to our businesses as well because it gives us better exposure... when it’s a nice night, and everyone’s sitting out there, it really creates an atmosphere that people want to be involved in,” Mr Filgate said.

With a yearly fee and a Footpath Trading Permit, businesses adjacent to the dining precinct will be able to access its facilities during their operating hours, each requesting a certain number of seats, tables, barriers, heating and shade.

Outside of these designated hours, the area will be accessible to the general public.

According to Yarra Ranges Council’s Acting Director of Planning, Design and Development Damian Closs, the Upwey township was selected as the location for a permanent outdoor precinct after “highly successful community outcomes achieved in their outdoor spaces”.

“Council realised early that the restrictions placed on businesses during COVID required some innovation to help traders keep operating,” Mr Closs said.

“The Upwey township took a particular lead in Yarra Ranges, with traders quickly adapting their service model to take advantage of ex-

Council have promoted this creative thinking in Upwey as great examples that demonstrate to other businesses in the municipality how they could similarly respond.”

“Our community have enthusiastically embraced these temporary installations and celebrated the atmosphere and life brought back

into our centres. They have been great for enjoying food, catching up with friends and adding vitality to the township.”

Mr Closs said locations for the outdoor dining precincts are focus on areas that have flatter ground to maximise accessibility and align well with where outdoor dining has flourished.

Works commenced on the precinct on 19 September and are expected to be completed in November, weather permitting.

Gembrook restaurant damaged in wild weather

By Tyler Wright The Independent in Gembrook is one of the businesses hit with heavy rain due to weather in past weeks, with a roof collapse damaging part of the kitchen preparation area and part of the female toilets, along with damage to a private dining area.

“It’s annoying because with everything that we’ve been going through, [it’s] another problem that have to tackle another thing that we have to do,” chef and one of the restaurant’s owners Mauro Callegari said.

“In the private dining room we have to wait until they do an assessment to see if there is any damage...we have to make sure the plaster is not about to fall down.

“Everything seems to be moving very quickly, so hopefully in the next couple of weeks we’ll have it all sorted and we can utilise the back room again and the kitchen area and the toilets.”

While there is no figure Mr Callegari could provide on the cost of the repairs, he said the weather has cost The Independent thousands of dollars through cancelled reservations, with around 45 reservations cancelled on one recent Friday night.

“Definitely a good three, four or five thousand dollars that you don’t take on revenue, and then weeks after it’s the same story because the storms continue,” Mr Callegari said.

“You try to manage everything as much as you can, and control your viable costings as much as you can; cancelling staff, sending people home early, giving them a longer break... it affects not only us, it affects everyone.” mailcommunity.com.au

The kitchen preparation area was shut for a day for cleaning.

The climate outlook up to January suggests this three-month period will be “wetter than average,” BOM meteorologist Hannah Marsh said.

“It looks like a high pressure system will move in on Wednesday [16 November], but it’s looking like that shower activity should ease and clear as we start heading towards the second half of the week” she said.

Mr Callegari said he will continue monitoring the forecast in coming weeks.

“I’m hoping it won’t get as bad as it was,” he said.

Plan forward for Kallista

By Tyler Wright The Kallista Floodwatch Group has received notice that the Department of Transport will work toward plans for long-term drainage solutions along Monbulk Road, after three incidents of flash flooding this year alone.

It is understood the Department of Transport is assessing long-term solutions for Kallista, with a time frames dependant on varying factors.

“We are extremely grateful for the Department’s concern and interest in working with the community to solve these issues that have impacted our area for more than 40 years,” Kallista Flood Watch Group member Karen Kestigian said.

“It’s also a very positive sign to be getting support from both the Department of Transportation and Yarra Ranges Shire infrastructure teams in the meantime for ongoing maintenance issues.”

Substantial temporary work has been undertaken including regular cleaning of drains and culverts along Monbulk Road, and DoT will continue to carry out regular inspections of Monbulk Road and undertake drain cleaning works as part of its maintenance program.

This comes after Monbulk’s Labor candidate in the upcoming state election, Daniela De Martino, and Liberal candidate Gareth Ward came together to supply around 50 sandbags for Kallista residents amid concerns of flash flooding damage after heavy rainfall in October.

“The Storm Water Drainage Improvement Project is so important to the impacted residents. Their valuable assets and peace of mind. We look forward to working with DoT and the Yarra Ranges Shire for both short term remedial support and for the long-term resolution to the flash flooding,” Ms Kestigian said.

A DoT spokesperson said as the state copes with “above average rainfall,” crews are “continuing to inspect and clear the drainage system around Kallista”.

“We’re also working with the Shire of Yarra Ranges and the local community to develop potential long-term drainage improvements

on Monbulk Road,” the DoT spokesperson said.

“We’ll continue to monitor the area and thank the community for their patience.”

If a flood warning is issued via VicEmergency there are four simple steps you can take to plan and stay safe.

Businesses in Olinda were left without power for nearly 48 hours after an ancient oak tree split and severed power lines twice on two different occasions.

After the English Oak tree split on Thursday 3 November with a large section of it falling and damaging a nearby power line, businesses in the surrounding area lost power.

Owner of Rubies and Rust Marquita Telford said her business lost two days of trading after losing power on two different occasions.

“We had to take all of our stock homes and put in in our freezes, we are lucky because we don’t live in Olinda and aren’t on the same grid,” she said.

“The first part of the tree came down on Thursday, on the Friday there was a gentleman who ran out on onto the road after the rest started creaking and stopped a school bus from going under the tree as the second half was coming down.”

Ms Telford said it took 48 hours for power to be restored to her business, with

part of the work taking place at 2am in the morning.

“It was a very messy and dangerous thing,” she said.

“All my staff are casuals and couldn’t work, we still have to pay rent and all our outgoings. Nothing stops as far as that is concerned, but we had no income coming in for two days.”

Other businesses went online to encourage people to shop locally to help the Olinda businesses that were impacted by the power outages.

It’s definitely triggering for us all when a huge tree comes down and takes out powerlines and this monumental oak is no different,” Emma Jennings, who owns a gallery in Olinda wrote.

“We lost two days of trading in the busy lead-up to Christmas, so even though we’ve all heard it a thousand times, it’s really important and meaningful to shop locally.”

Road sealing plan axed

By Shelby Brooks La Trobe MP Jason Wood has slammed the Federal Government for “scrapping” a $300m road sealing project for the hills in the 2022-23 budget.

In parliament, Mr Wood claimed the Federal Government must “hate the people of the Dandenong Ranges and the hills” for cutting future funding for the project, which was first announced in 2019.

“It is totally unfair that hills residents are subjected to second rate roads, with potholes in winter and dust in summer,” Mr Wood told Star Mail.

“The council has advised me that without Federal funding, it would take 80-100 years to seal these roads.”

110 kilometres of unsealed roads in Cardinia Shire and 187 kilometres in the Yarra Ranges would have been sealed between 2020 and 2029 as part of the Sealing the Hills Road Project and Roads for Community Initiative.

The funding of $300 million was the result of an advocacy partnership between Cardinia Shire Council and Yarra Ranges Council to improve unsealed roads.

The project was to be co-funded by property owners via a special charge scheme.

A spokesperson for the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts said some existing infrastructure projects had been reviewed, and in some cases, reduced or discontinued in the October budget.

“This includes the Sealing Roads projects in the Dandenong Ranges for the Yarra Ranges and Cardinia Shire councils, where future projects have been discontinued,” they said.

“A number of projects have already been delivered and we will continue to work with both councils to deliver works that are currently under construction or have tender process-

They said current economic conditions were affecting the delivery of infrastructure investments and increasing the pressure on the Commonwealth budget.

A spokesperson for Cardinia Shire Council said the Federal funding subsidised about 85 per cent of the total cost of works.

“Without this funding, council and residents will be unable to cover the cost of this alone,” they said.

Cardinia Shire Council has had $41 million of federal funding approved for the Sealing the Hills’ current and upcoming works.

They have received $22 million towards the

works, with $128 million outstanding to complete the entire Sealing the Hills program.

Since commencing in mid-2021, Cardinia Shire Council has completed or is nearing completion on seven roads, with construction set to ramp-up shortly with works on 32 roads expected to start in early 2023.

Cardinia Shire Council has already progressed designs, environmental investigations, and community consultations for an additional $45 million of works.

There are a total of 42 packages outstanding in the Sealing the Hills program across more than 160 roads and 102 km in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounds.

“On behalf of our communities, we would be extremely disappointed should federal funding not be available for the entirety of this vitally important road safety program,” Cardinia Shire Mayor Tammy Radford said.

Ranges ward councillor Jeff Springfield said the funding program was vital to delivering improved safety and amenities for thousands of residents.

“The reported news that the entirety of this program may no longer be funded has caused great distress and concern for many of our residents,” he said.

“I sincerely hope that the responsible Federal authorities can understand the vital importance of this program and heed the calls of our community to continue to deliver this program.

“It would be devastating for our community if this program was no longer delivered as it was promised.”

Yarra Ranges Council did not respond in time for publication.

Tony Stevenson, who was the Yarra Ranges mayor at the time of the original announcement in 2019, shared his dismay at the situation.

“In the run up to the 2019 Federal Election, Yarra Ranges Council worked hard to achieve bipartisan support for Federal Government funding to help seal dirt roads within townships across Yarra Ranges,” he said.

“Cancelling this funding will once again put road upgrades out of the reach of ordinary Australians and will cost local jobs. This road funding is even more urgently needed now given the heightened risks of fires and storms as experienced in the 2020 Black Summer bushfires and 2021 Dandenong Ranges storms.

“It is simply not acceptable in 2022 that people in towns, often only 50km from the centre of Melbourne, suffer from third-world roads and drains.”

Poppies fill Monbulk RSL

By Tyler Wright Over 300 knitted poppies lined the fence and entrance to Monbulk RSL this Remembrance Day, with the community gathering for a minute silence to remember those fallen in the first and second world wars, and in the following conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and Korea among others.

Veterans, locals and emergency service personnel stood in unified silence at Monbulk RSL on the morning of Friday 11 November, as RSL president Bill Ford Last Post played into Monbulk’s Main Street, followed by the Australian national anthem.

Monbulk RSL Vice President and Vietnam War veteran John Surridge recited The Poppy

by D Rothwell, with secretary Craig Vandenberg reading the powerful In Flanders Fields in tribute to fallen soldiers and veterans, with wreaths laid at the RSL’s shrine.

“Remembrance Day is just as important as Anzac Day,” Monbulk RSL President Bill Ford said.

“You remember all people lost in war, whether It’s in England, New Zealand, South Africa, the Middle East, Gallipoli...and you remember colleagues who have passed away in recent years.”

The community outpour of support for Monbulk RSL and neighbouring leagues in Upwey, Yarra Junction, Warburton and Healesville and Lilydale has been nothing short of incredible, with locals buying poppies and backing their veteran’s charities “to the hilt”.

“It doesn’t matter where I sit...I had people come in last night and this morning to get a poppy - a special effort,” Mr Ford said.

“We have people who buy poppies, and they visit the cemetery today a 11 o’clock and put a poppy on their loved one’s grave; that’s what it means right throughout the community.”

Monbulk RSL Vice President Craig Vandenberg said through the RSL he was able to meet a fellow Vietnam War veterans who served in the same transport platoon as him, only two years prior.

Mr Vandenberg also said numbers of RSL members are dwindling.

But despite this, the ability to remember the fallen continues to bring the community together for Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. “Everyone has a common interest, remembering family members from previous wars, so it’s really good to see everyone getting involved,” Monbulk RSL secretary John Surridge said.

“We all rally around each other... in times of need, you can always bank on the Monbulk RSL to come forward and help anyone out.”

It seems the tradition of knitted poppies an emblem of honouring the dead and helping the living - will continue on in years to come. “[Wendy] had a band of ladies crocheting and knitting poppies and they’ve already started knitting for next year, she’s got something else in mind,” Mr Ford said.

Cockatoo RSL remembers fallen servicemen & women

By Hugh Pearson Cockatoo RSL commemorated Australian servicemen and women who died and were injured in the line of duty for Remembrance Day. Cockatoo RSL President and Cardinia Shire citizen of the year Carol Thompson commenced proceedings and welcomed those in attendance.

Students from Cockatoo Primary School made up the majority of those in attendance.

The students’ hats were adorned with paper modifications to resemble the poppies and the symbol of remembrance of war.

“It was wonderful to once again see the sea of red hats looking like poppies from the children of the Cockatoo Primary School,” Ms Thompson said.

Cockatoo school captains recited “In Flanders Field” which was accompanied by sign language of the poem for those who are hearing impaired.

Rudy Van Den Bovenkamp graced the audience’s ears with his performance of “I was only 19”, before performing Advance Australia Fair and God Save the King.

After the performance from Mr Van Den Bovenkamp, a wreath was laid and attendees were invited to pay their respects to fallen and injured service men and women by laying a poppy at the cenotaph.

Attendees also paid their respects by standing and removing their hats during the minute silence at 11AM. After raising the Australian flag, attendees were invited to enjoy a tea or coffee and a bite to eat.

Emerald RSL commemorated the day by unveiling seven new plaques honouring the lives lost in the seven main conflicts after World War II in countries including Iraq, Vietnam and East Timor.

Emerald RSL President Peter Maloney and Vice President Kane Falconer spoke about Australia’s involvement in conflicts and peacekeeping and their time as servicemen.

I’ve been a tradesman most of my working life. The COVID lockdown made me determined to live my values, so I hung up the tools to take up studying a diploma in Community Service and I’ve also gone back to complete a bachelor’s degree studying human rights, economics, and sustainability. Contracting to property managers doing maintenance work I noticed the large number of good people struggling to make rent and deal with the cost of living. On city jobs, I’d take homeless people to lunch and dinner in the cold of winter and listen and learn from them. I can see there are major cracks in our system right now which need more than a coat of paint. It is in dire need of renovation. I can see what’s broken, and the tools needed to fix it. After reviewing party policies thoroughly, the greens stood out as daylight ahead of the others. They are integrated and enhance one another. They deal with complexity, are inclusive, and create jobs. The Greens have a legitimate policy platform. Like me its not about popularity, Its about addressing why our system keeps repeating its failures.

2. Why do you believe you’re the best candidate for Monbulk?

The candidates for Monbulk bring a variety of experience to the seat. We all see problems. Our philosophies differ. The trickledown model has failed extensively. We absolutely need somebody with the strongest instinct and understanding for this moment in time. Inevitable change can be confronting but this is not a dress rehearsal. It’s nearly 2023 and how far have we really come? The election will decide whether this state is a leader or a pariah on the road to renewables.

We must implement innovative opportunities or we can leave it to our kids to do the inevitable heavy lifting and come 2027 and beyond. It’s on us right now to confront the environment, equity, new opportunities and incentivise new ways of dealing with modern problems. It’s not going to somehow all be fine unless we do what’s right. I believe in the underdog, and right now, we are the underdog. The environment and the economy is the underdog. People’s disillusionment in parliament and health care is the underdog.

The old way of doing things just isn’t keeping people off the streets, costs down and food production stable. We need to be addressing the environment’s needs and giving our kids a fair start without the impending fear of a planet too hot to live on and species dying out.

3. What are your party policies and values you stand by?

The key policies for me are: Moving to 100% renewable energy –A full-scale transition to renewables can create tens of thousands of jobs, set an example to the rest of the world, and build investor confidence.

Fix the housing crisis – everyone deserves the dignity of a bed to sleep in at night and renters should not have to bid for properties. Affordable housing is achievable through various measures that again will help to create jobs Establish a regenerative agriculture research and education facility for farmers and future generations to achieve genuine sustainable food production. We are currently using the world’s annual regenerative capacity up by April each year I want democracy to be it’s absolute best so giving IBAC more teeth to remove corruption and clean up parliament will clear the path for a meaningful democracy.

I will push to integrate strong critical thinking into schools to enable children to build an intellectual Self Defence mechanism against tenuous and misleading information. Understanding logic and interpreting rhetoric is only part of a vast toolkit to ultimately preserve a true democracy.

With extreme weather events occurring more and more, the Greens have pledged $50 million to State Emergency Services.

I will push hard to stand alongside these warriors to prioritise Monbulk its rightful share. This Spring we have also seen pothole repairs a high priority and I will consult for an emergency response mechanism for major damaged surfaces. Keeping the show on the road keeps businesses running and people connected. These services are a high priority for our community.

I have been living in Ferntree Gully, as a renter since the start of this year. I grew up in the hills so I have always been a part of the outer-eastern Melbourne community.

2. Why did you decide to run for the seat of Bayswater?

Young people, women, members of the LGBTQIA+ community and people of diverse backgrounds are not represented enough in the political world. Partially because they aren’t offered the same opportunities and often because they are disempowered by a system dominated by people who are not like them and don’t justly represent them. I have felt this way for a long time and as an artist, I can see that my industry does not have the governmental support that is required for it to thrive. I decided to run for Bayswater because I know The Greens have policies and plans to give diverse groups more opportunities and create real change when it comes to the climate crisis.

3. Why do you believe you’re the best candidate for Bayswater?

I experience the rising cost of living, exorbitant rent and as a frequent user of public transport, I understand how much of a struggle it can be. Living in the east my whole life, I have observed much unnecessary environmental destruction and I understand how sacred our natural spaces are to the community. As a young person, I am passionate about creating a liveable future and as a woman, I see that we need more diverse political representation.

I live in Boronia, where I’ve been for 5 years. I grew up in Ringwood, and have also lived in Croydon and Upper Ferntree Gully. I have always lived in the outer East suburbs of Melbourne.

2.Why did you decide to run for the seat of Bayswater?

I was frustrated seeing our politicians fail to create policy and legislation that can adequately decrease environmental degradation in Victoria, and move us toward sustainable development and clean energy, while protecting our precious native ecosystem and wildlife. I wanted to get involved locally to protect the environment I live in. Local grassroots community groups sought an independent candidate to represent them, and in the shortest term to specifically help save Lake Knox. I stepped forward so that I could be an advocate for these issues.

3.Why do you believe you’re the best candidate for Bayswater?

I was chosen by a section of the community to represent them at this election.

My policy platform and focus come from the community itself, rather than parties.

As an independent, I will work directly for my constituents and champion the issues they care about. If elected, I would also provide a fresh approach to Parliament, carrying a scientific expertise and a unique perspective as a transgender woman.

4.What are your party policies and values you stand by?

There are many reasons people in Bayswater and Knox care about saving Lake Knox, including concerns for the threatened Blue Billed Duck, losing vital open space for recreation and health, and unsustainable development practices. I believe I have a proven track record of not only delivering for the community but more importantly standing up and fighting for the community. We believe we need a new government, a government that listens to the community, engages with the community and represents the community. My party stands for up for small businesses, reducing taxes where you

If you look specifically at our electorate, the three issues that we’ve been strongly campaigning on which clearly differentiate us from Labor are: 1. Lake Knox, where we will work with the community to save Lake Knox. The Labor Party is not willing to work with local residents to find solutions, we will, and I think Lake Knox is emblematic of the bigger picture that this government refuses to engage with the community.

2. We’re going to deliver a brand new 250-bed public hospital in Knox, which is identified in the future Wantirna Health Precinct. It is vitally needed for residents in the community, we’ve got people waiting in tents outside public hospitals and it isn’t good enough. We need extra beds in Knox and the Liberal Party will deliver that.

3. The third is getting better public transport, including trams. We’ve not only committed to a study to look at expanding the tram network to Bayswater and Upper Gully, but we’ve now put $134 million on the table in committed dollars to deliver the tram to Knox, something Labor promised 23 years ago and never delivered.

Ferntree Gully. I grew up here, went to Kent Park Primary School then to Aquinas College in Ringwood. In the last couple of years, I have managed to purchase my first home in the area.

As a medically prescribed user, it is about ending discrimination. I want to make a positive change for the community by continuing to speak the truth and help to break down the stigma and shame associated with this plant. I see this as a huge opportunity for the area. I was one of the premierships captains at Lysterfield Cricket Club and I would like to continue to serve and be a leader. Every day I go to work I run the risk of losing my licence, my career and then my home.

All because a law wants to deny my basic human right to self-medicate with a prescribed medication used as directed. No other medicine has this hanging over it. I also advocate for personal use as it should be freedom of choice for the individual.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It is time to vote for normal accountable people like myself to advocate for change rather than continue to divide.

I am just a normal member of society, I put myself, my brand which is my name at great risk by going public on this. I believe I am the best candidate because I am a true local. My family has good standing in the community and through this particular

passion of mine, I would like to help bring change. With the “re-legalisation” of Cannabis, we will bring new jobs and new industries. This is a health issue and the benefits once we are honest about its use will extend to every community member, both direct and indirect.

Truth, Accountability and Fairness. The party policies are all about ending discrimination and helping out the most vulnerable. We need to change driving laws to represent the actual real-world data. Jobs - New Industry, opportunities for small business, Community Cannabis Clubs - a safe way to consume and interact and educate. Health - After the last few years especially we need to be more honest and transparent. If someone has the option to use a medication with a lower harm profile then that should be their choice. Alcohol, Ice, Heroin and other substances continue to cause more harm than benefit in our community, this should be about giving people the freedom to make safer, educated choices about their life. There is no healthcare without THC. Confidence - I see our home as broken. I see a community divided by a lack of accountability. I have been very frustrated at politicians and how every election it seems to be “pick me, am nowhere near as bad as the other guy” This has to stop, it doesn’t serve any of us stakeholders. I want our area to be the leader in this and make it into a vibrant happy and most importantly safe place to live.

By Parker McKenzie With early voting opening and Election Day on November 26 fast approaching, candidates in Bayswater and Monbulk have been busy making their final pitches to their constituents.

In Monbulk, Liberal candidate Gareth Ward announced $400,000 in funding towards upgrading the Ferntree Gully Village, Belgrave, Cockatoo and Gembrook shopping strips as a part of a $30 million plan by his party.

In a statement, Mr Ward said getting Monbulk residents to stay and shop local is the pri-

mary focus of the community.

The Labor Party announced a statewide neighbourhood battery program, which Monbulk candidate Daniela De Martino said would see them installed in every LGA in the electorate.

On Facebook, Ms De Martino said the state would invest in batteries throughout Cardinia, Knox and Yarra Ranges.

Bayswater MP Jackson Taylor made two funding commitments for Boronia, promising $2.1 million for St Joseph’s Primary School and $1.2 million for an upgrade of Tormore Reserve if the Labor Party returns to government.

“Boronia Hawks Football Netball and Boronia Cricket Clubs are amazing community groups who deserve the best facilities to grow and play in,” Mr Taylor said.

“I’m stoked to be backing in our grassroots sporting clubs and I can’t wait to watch a premiership win from the new pavilion when it’s complete.”

Ferntree Gully CFA hosts first community open day

By Parker McKenzie If you’ve ever wanted an inside look at how your local police operate, Belgrave Police Station is hosting a family-friendly Open Day for the community on Sunday 27 November.

The free event will be held from 10am, featuring station tours from 11am to 2pm, a highway patrol car for children to look in, fingerprinting demonstrations and the police canine unit.

Senior Sergeant Michelle Davis said they wanted to remind people that Belgrave Police Station is an operation station after being closed to the public during large parts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It won’t just be coming through and looking at the station,” she said.

“We want the public to know we are here and everyone is welcome.”

The Open Day will also have representatives from other emergency services like the SES, CFA, Ambulance Victoria, Police Legacy and St John’s Ambulance’s CPRlab present.

Sgt. Davis said the Open Day was an oppor-

tunity for the station to give back to the community.

“We want people to come and meet us and get to know us, we are their police,” she said.

“Belgrave Footy Club will be cooking a BBQ for a gold coin donation, with proceeds being divvied up between the club, the Blue Ribbon Foundation and Police Legacy.”

The event has been sponsored by several local businesses, including Bills of Belgrave, The Basin Bakery, Woolworths Belgrave and Chandler and Co Real Estate.

Bills of Belgrave owner Bill Woolnough said he has donated 20kg of sausages for the sizzle.

“It’s a good community event to be involved in,” he said.

“It’ll be great to see the police dogs, I’ll be going up to have a look.”

Sgt. Davis said the station was grateful to Chandler and Co for donating the advertising boards for the Open Day and to all the other sponsors for their generosity.

Belgrave Police Station will publish the best parking instructions on social media ahead of the event.

Ferntree Gully CFA will hold its first open day since before the Covid-19 pandemic on Saturday 26 November, with local groups participating in bringing community spirit back to The Avenue.

Held at 5 The Avenue, Ferntree Gully and running from 10am to 2pm, the open day will feature the Rotary Club of Ferntree Gully, Knox Historical Society, the Ferntree Gully Girl Guides, Friends of Koolunga and the Ferntree Gully Art Society.

CFA Community Safety Manager Graham Crichton said the CFA will have fire prevention demos and educational information about smoke alarms and fires.

“This is all about educating the community because without the community we wouldn’t have a CFA brigade,” he said.

“People don’t know what they don’t know and smoke alarms are a classic example. We expect smoke alarms in every living area and bedroom, but we still have people who’ve got just one in their hallway.”

The SES will present with a rescue truck and an artisan market and an art show will be hosted by the Mountain District learning centre and the Uniting Church in Ferntree Gully respectively.

ciety said the day was about the community empowering each other.

“It’s lovely that there will be all these community groups here on the day and hopefully people will come out,” she said.

“Getting back to the grassroots, community-led fun and supporting the local traders is what it is about.”

The art show is being held at 6 The Avenue, directly across from the CFA, and the artisan market will be located at 13-15 The Avenue.

Rotary Ferntree Gully co-president Christine Anderson said they will be providing a free sausage sizzle for people in attendance.

“We’re also going to be having free crafts for the children in the shape of bush animals,” she said.

“We are going to paint and put glitter on them so they can hang on the Christmas tree.”

Moyra Farrington from Friends of Koolunga Native Reserve said she hopes the open day will encourage people to join them for a walk through the reserve.

“Maybe even come and join us sometime for a working day,” she said.

“We just want to showcase Koolunga and the work the friend’s group do there.”

The CFA Open Day — held on Election Day — will feature a variety of community groups from the local area.

Help Friends of Sassafras Creek build a wildlife corridor

By Tyler Wright Friends of Sassafras Creek (FOSC) is calling for volunteers to help build a wildlife corridor at the Perrins Creek headwaters in a working bee on Sunday 27 November.

Attendees will be able to get advice on how to effectively get rid of weeds including English Ivy, Holly and aliminium weeds, while also learning how to spot Indigenous plants common to the area.

FOSC president Jane Hollands said the group has already began works within the ‘secret garden’ after receiving a state government and DELWP, planting native vegetation and mother shield ferns to support a wildlife habitation area for local fauna such as the lyrebird, the powerful owl and the burrowing crayfish.

“The big thing with this area is it provides an important corridor for animals; we see lyrebirds that have been banded in Sherbrooke Forest in the secret garden, and that’s because the birds have moved through,” Ms Hollands said.

“We need these wildlife corridors for the birds and animals so they can move, and this wildlife corridor starts to link up towards Olinda... it’s a very important area to get back healthy with native plants.”

And the environment is seemingly already reaping the benefits of the growing amount of native shrubbery like mother shield fern, mutton wood and musk daisies, with FOSC recently finding new bird nests in the secret garden.

A feat all the more important after a challenging period of storms and lockdown in 2021.

“We had a big branch of Mountain Ash come down and just smash the whole area in the storm,” Ms Hollands said.

“It’s a significant area and it’s very challenged, so [the secret garden] is an ongoing project.”

FOSC’s working bee will take place from 9.30am to 12.30pm, with those involved encouraged to bring sturdy gloves, shoes and a water bottle.

Car parking is available opposite 13 Perrins Creek Road, Olinda.

Feeling inundated We have been flooded out recently to various degrees and with varied consequences. An unnamed ‘river’ took its course through the main street of Lilydale like a herd of cattle would have done if they had escaped from the cattle yards in 1939. However, that ‘river’ did by far the greater damage and created more inconvenience.

Floods of this nature affect to a greater degree those who are inundated by them and not so much for those who see it on TV. The latter don’t experience the personal pain, anxiety and financial cost.

‘Inundated’ meaning being overwhelmed with things or people that we are forced to deal with.

An overwhelming thing that we have been forced to deal with started in early ’20 and it, ‘Covid-19’ has in a certain sense kept us prisoners for nearly three years, and reveals itself in new variants just when we think we have got it cornered. It inundated our home life, jobs, our children’s schooling and our ability to travel.

Recently the dominant inundation has been by water – whether you had to leave your homes due to damage caused, or having said goodbye to your once nice and tidy gravel driveway.

All of this is without doubt depressing to say the least and the house may not be habitable for quite some time either.

Talking of delays in responses we need to have a look at our fire victims and their dilemmas.

Many people have been inundated by fires in Victoria, deemed the worst fire state in Australia.

Since 2002 it has been almost a biennial event - ’02, ’03, ‘05/’06 summer, ’09, ‘012/ ‘013 summer, ‘015, then the devastating East Gippsland fires of ‘019/20.

Named by authorities as the worst fires in Australian history, the ’09 fires wiped out complete towns like Marysville and Narbethong and all the way along the Maroondah highway to Alexandra and affecting the towns of Yarra Glen and Healsville to the west.

With the shear number of properties lost, it took many years to get homes rebuilt - if the owners had insurance – if not, over ten years or more. Some uninsured ones just sold their land.

Those fires resulted in 173 deaths and 43,000 hectares burnt, including homes sheds and livestock lost.

Those fires arrived so quickly that most had to run for their lives.

Fear struck the towns and panic itself caused many deaths.

I had lived and dairy farmed in Buxton for years and knew all these people but had sold up prior to the fires.

This is where grief and depression sets in.

While these men were comfortable with me, by now a clinical counsellor as well, they didn’t want anyone to see them in an emotional state so we would meet down behind a burnt out shed or leaning on a burnt out tractor.

A great guy I had befriended ventured to sit outside a half burnt coffee shop at a little two man table.

As he told me the story of losing his house, and having cried all his tears, he would put his hand up effectively needing a pause and with his fingers indicated that he was really crying on the inside with dry eyes and when that emotional moment had passed, he would signal to continue. What a brave man – a former soldier.

Whatever we are dealing with that is overwhelming and is inundating our lives, help is available – talk to your doctor first for a referral to a helpful psychologist.

Sunburnt Veils: strong own-voices debut A review of Sunburnt Veils by Sara Haghdoosti This is the second in a series of six reviews featuring the 2022 Readings Young Adult Book Prize.

Question: What is wrong with the following paragraph?

“The [cross], for me, was a redirection, even a second chance and because of that it was a reminder that what made us worthy, special even as humans was our imperfection.

That I would make mistakes and still be loved. I needed that reassurance to think about changing the world, to believe that I could do big, bold, scary things – and that even if none of it worked out, I’d still be worthy, still be loved.”

More importantly, Tara wears the hijab to honour her faith and family, even when her own parents choose not to in order to survive in a society where those with different appearances are so often alienated, abused and attacked that victim-blaming becomes common.

On her first day as student of a prestigious university, Tara is accused of being a potential terrorist and causing a bomb threat. While her accuser tearfully claims “I was just scared and I shouldn’t have to be worried that I’m not safe all the time”, it is Tera who is publicly interrogated and has to claim back her personal be-

longings from the police station.

Instead of putting her head down and waiting for all the humiliation and gossip to go away, Tara decides to run for Student Union Board and make the university a better place.

In her words: “The promise of this place is that when you walk in the gates, this community will help you become the best you can be.”

That is, the university – as a microcosm of our society – is supposed to be about “learning and curiosity”, where you can “show up, stand up for what’s important, even if you’re not sure how it’ll turn out”.

Tara’s journey is one of self-discovery, of searching for and finding connection without ever doubting her own sense of worth. Like the other strong female characters in this story, she chooses to create change rather than waiting for someone else to make it happen for them.

Sunburnt Veils is also a critique of our “natural” ways of seeing the IDEA of others – what we IMAGINE they represent – rather than who they really are. Thanks to debut author Sara Haghdoosti, we get to better understand the true nature and significance of diversity as much more than a politically correct word.

Highly recommended.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever Starring Letitia Wright, Tenoch Huerta and Dominique Thorne Rated M 3.5/5 Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a poignant, exciting superhero film that sadly fumbles its action.

A year after the death of King T’Challa, the hyper-advanced African nation of Wakanda clashes with the underwater kingdom of Talokan over the security of their lands. Chadwick Boseman, who played T’Challa/Black Panther in the 2018 Black Panther film and the later Avengers films, died of cancer in 2020, and Wakanda Forever succeeds in mourning the actor and character while moving forward with an engaging new conflict.

T’Challa’s sister, the headstrong genius Shuri (Letitia Wright), anchors the film with an affecting arc, as she learns to deal with her grief and not let vengeance consume her. The plot has strong forward momentum despite its 2.5-hour runtime, the characters are compelling and nuanced, and much of the tension comes from good people in desperate circumstances making their situation worse through pride or bad choices.

Like Scarlet Witch in Doctor Strange 2, Namor (Tenoch Huerta), the king of Talokan, is an excellent example of the difference between antagonist and villain: he is a ruthless foe, but driven by loyalty and protectiveness toward his people rather than a desire for violence or conquest, and Huerta has a very charismatic presence. Riri Williams/Ironheart (Dominique Thorne), a young inventor who built her own Iron Man suit, has fun friction with Shuri, but she is mostly a Macguffin, as the largely-passive focus of Namor’s brutal campaign. The film’s biggest flaw is its action: the fights and battles carry emotional weight, but are tangles of motion shot too close and cut too quickly (which is a common problem in the Marvel Cinematic Universe).

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a moving, character-rich superhero drama burdened with unfulfilling action, and is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

Remarkable and poignant Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre Moving On LAT decided to close the year with Moving On, a play with words and music by Cenarth Fox. A play that covers humour, nostalgia, songs, pathos and drama.

A one-woman play with a lady clearing up her mother’s home after the mother had passed away.

This is something most of the opening night audience could relate to judging by the comments heard across the theatre.

Angela Glennie was Maggie, the daughter trying to clean up by spending most of the time reminiscing over each item she found.

One scene that did stand out was when she found her old teddy bear. She was very emotional in this scene and was talking to Teddy the rest of the evening.

Originally Maggie was talking to her deceased mother and then through Teddy.

A great performance by Angela Glennie who captured the essence of such a character with acting ranging from light comedy to when as Maggie she found a photo of her deceased son where she completely changed and sowed the tragic side of her life Glennie also had a very pleasant singing

Nice tribute

Kemp’s curtain call voice which added to the enjoyment of the evening. There were several scenes off stage where Maggie was up in the attic or in the kitchen making a cup of tea. She didn’t stop talking to the audience in these scenes so being off stage does not interrupt the play. When in the kitchen there was a small trapdoor between the kitchen and lounge room through which she appeared whilst doing her kitchen duties.

LAT had a great set of the mother’s lounge room, stuck drawers that happens all the time, There were doorways leading to the other rooms which one could see part of.

All in all a great finish to the year by Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre and a wonderful performance by Angela Glennie who was on stage the whole performance with a long script to remember. Excellently done.

All abilities cricket team

By Parker McKenzie Belgrave Cricket Club will be launching a new all-abilities cricket program to further local community engagement, diversity, equity and inclusion, starting with an online information night on Zoom at 7.30pm on Monday 21 November.

After a meeting between the club and The Melbourne All Abilities Cricket Association on Tuesday 8 November where the club expressed formal interest in launching a side in the 2023/24 season, Belgrave will begin information sessions and come and try days over the summer to “identify what division they could a team in.”

Belgrave Cricket Club Sean Connolly said launching the program was “the responsible thing to do when you’re trying to provide for the local community.”

“It’s something there isn’t a lot of in our area, particularly in the hills. We see it as an opportunity to be leaders in the local community,” he said.

“There is a team in Croydon and also Ferntree Gully, but we already have a few juniors and seniors playing in mainstream sides that are eligible.”

The team will compete in a formal competition run by MAACA, with games played every second Sunday over the summer for a total of six games with a final series to cap off the season.

Mr Connolly said the club is trying really hard to provide for everyone in the community.

“We liked the idea that we’re going to be able to offer cricket to even more people in our local area,” he said.

“The all abilities program is definitely helping us extend that and show we are a club

Match winning century for Upwey-Tecoma club It was a big weekend of cricket , as the weather finally allowed some matches to be played. Up until Saturday, Upwey-Tecoma had played only one senior men’s game while the juniors were yet to take the field.

A stunning Jules Whetstone century powered Upwey-Tecoma’s 1st XI to a win over Ferntree Gully at Upwey Recreation Reserve.

Asked to bowl in overcast conditions, the Tigers started well with Steve Collard claiming 2 early scalps to have the Blues on the back foot at 2/11. A steady partnership threatened to take the game away from Upwey-Tecoma but a constant flow of wickets late in the innings stymied Ferntree Gully’s progress, seeing them finish their 40 overs at 9/168.

With the bat, the Tigers found the early going tough and the game was well and truly in the balance at 3/64.

Enter Whetstone, with a flurry of boundaries from the Eglish import taking the game away from the Blues. Needing 5 runs for a win and 6 runs for his hundred, Whetstone pounced on a legside delivery, clipping a maximum over the legside to send the Tiger crowd into a frenzy as he brought up his century and delivered a memorable victory in one fell swoop. The 2nd XI recorded a win against Ferntree Gully, with Liam Dunning and Chris Jewell half-centuries crucial to setting a winning score. The wickets were shared around, with young spinner Darcy Whitten the best of bowlers with 2/4 off his 8 overs.

The 3rd XI lost narrowly to Lysterfield despite the heroics of Steve Atherton, who finished with the incredible figures of 5/11.

The 4th XI had a solid win against Mountain Gate, with stand-in skipper Rhett Chapman leading from the front with a quickfire 33 to set up a comfortable run chase.

In his first game for the club, Kasey Richarsdson claimed 4/8 in a masterclass of swing bowling to help restrict the Hawks to 95. The batting never really got going, with the Tigers finishing on 8/93, just 2 runs shy of the target.

The undefeated Women’s XI had the bye and will be keen to continue their undefeated start to the season at South Belgrave next weekend.

Monbulk Cricket Club restarts its season All Monbulk teams finally got on the park this weekend, most for their first match of the season.

The highlight of this round was definitely our junior results. The U16’s had an exciting win which came down to the last ball. Playing Upwey-Tecoma at home, we batted first and managed to make 95 highlighted by an amazing innings of 64 not out from 54 balls by Lucas McIntosh. Monbulk then bowled tightly to begin with. Ethan Knight took 2/11 and we got 3 run outs to win by 2 runs.

The U14’s and Fast 9’s also had wins with our brand new Super 7’s team starting their first ever match on Wednesday night until they were unfortunately washed out when a big storm rolled through.

Great winning conditions

By Jack Rollings The BOM predicted rain and possible thunderstorms. Instead, it was a cloud-covered sky, jackets off for most of the day, no wind and not much to complain about if you were playing bowls for Monbulk.

Monbulk 1 travelled to Healesville which hadn’t been able to use its greens during the recent floods. The floodwater didn’t make it onto their greens or into the clubroom, but bowlers just couldn’t get in there because the access road was flooded in a big way. On the way to Healesville, some of the paddocks in the low-lying areas near the rivers and creeks were still covered in what looked like an enormous lake on both sides of the road.

Monbulk went into this round without a loss. This matchup, on an away ground, was going to be a test, with Healesville sitting in third place on two wins. Just before the game started, the Monbulk side captain prepared the side for a tough one. Focus was the main strategy.

The Healesville main green is a sand-filled synthetic that has been recently professionally cleaned. Each rink had a very narrow side and a very wide side. The Monbulk bowlers had all arrived early for a few practice rollups, but even so, the rink sides were so different that it took a few ends into the games for some of the Monbulk bowlers to really trust their own aiming lines.

Eric Markham’s team had a strong start, only giving away four singles in the front half and taking the lead to an 11-shot margin. Marg O’Brien, as Lead, put in some tight shots to give Monbulk an early upper hand on several ends.

After the cuppa break, Healesville won six ends in a row including a 3 shotter to get within 3 shots. Monbulk steadied, focused, with the finish in sight, and grabbed the important mats.

Monbulk won the rink 18 shots to 13.

Karen Rice’s team won the first end but then dropped the next four ends including a 3 and a 4, to trail by 7 shots on the fifth end. Then they won two 3s in a row, and after that, were level pegging up till the cuppa break. After the break, the Monbulk team was all about focus.

They only dropped four ends, all for minor scores and picked up some doubles and a 3.

The Healesville skip resorted to killing the final ends in an attempt to make up the numbers, but Monbulk replayed the ends, with focus, and won the rink 21 shots to 15.

Brian Smith’s team never looked in danger.

They won thirteen ends including a couple of doubles and a couple of 3s. One 2 shotter was the worst they lost. Halfway they were 5 shots up and they grew the margin in the back half.

Monbulk won the rink 18 shots to 10.

Jim Bras’ team had a tough start. They

Eric Furby takes his shot. picked up only two ends in the front half and trailed by 10 shots at halfway. After the break, with renewed focus, they gave away only three more ends. But one loss was a 3 shot-clanger.

With six ends to go, they were still trailing by 10 shots, but Monbulk managed to win each of those six ends and almost topple their opponents. They certainly had them worried. Monbulk lost the rink 16 shots to 18.

Overall, Monbulk won 73 shots to 56, with three rinks up. They are undefeated and well on top of the ladder, 26 ladder points ahead of second, and a massive 90-shot score difference ahead of second. Next week there is no play because the Vic Open is on, but the following week Monbulk plays at home against Lilydale 3 who are fourth on the ladder. With only two matches to go, to complete the front half of the season, the pressure is on Monbulk to maintain good form.

Alan Hamilton’s team had a huge front half.

The wins included a 3, a 4 and two 6s. At the halfway break they were 22 shots up. In the back half the opponents won five ends including one 5 shot clanger that Monbulk let slip, but Monbulk also picked up a 4 and a 5. They increased the lead and took the rink 40 shots to 13.

Don Barnetson’s team has had mixed results recently so it was great to see such a steady game from the crew today. They dropped only six ends for the day. Yes, one of those was a 6 shot clanger, but they already had a big lead, on the rink and overall. Monbulk wins included four 3s, a 4, and a lot of doubles. Monbulk won the rink 32 shots to 10.

Graeme Goller’s team took a few ends to settle in and was down by 6 shots going into

the eighth end. Then, in a massive turnaround, they picked up the next six ends, including two 4s and two 5s, to lead by 16 shots. That fruit cake at break time must have done the trick.

In the race home, Upwey/Tecoma won more ends than Monbulk, but the Monbulk wins were all doubles, so they held onto the margin and won the rink 29 shots to 13.

Peter Lee’s team won thirteen ends and didn’t drop any clangers. The wins included two 4s and several doubles. Upwey made a good showing in the final third, but Monbulk nailed the last end with a big 4-shotter to finish on a high note. Monbulk won the rink 22 shots to 10.

Overall Monbulk won with a massive 123 shots to 46 and four rinks up. They are now fourth on the ladder with three wins and two losses. But, they are more than 10 ladder points below third spot, so they have some catching up to do. After the one-week break, Monbulk plays the next match against Dandenong RSL Rec 1 at the Keysborough Bowls Club. Dandenong RSL is yet to score a win this season.

Cockatoo/Monbulk played at home against Eastwood Golf. They played on the Monbulk bottom green, which isn’t too bad with all the recent rain. It was a huge win today for the combined team. But, as the lead kept growing throughout the day, the combined scoreboard actually ran out of numbers – they were in lofty new territory. It was the first side’s outright win for the season, so the celebrations went on for a while afterwards.

Allan Brooke’s team had a close front half, with Eastwood’s noses just in front at the break. Then the combined side fired up in the back half, collecting a 3, a 4, and a 5. They won the rink 31 shots to 18.

Mark Coulter’s team took a few ends to feel comfortable on the bottom green, but, after the fifth end, they were all over it, only dropping four more ends. Their collects included two 3s, a 4, and a 5. They won the rink 29 shots to 10.

Case Broekhof’s team was 5 shots all going into the ninth end. After that, they only dropped three ends, for minor scores, while the wins included good multiples. They won the rink 25 shots to 10.

Anthony Young’s team had a day out. They dropped only seven ends, with only one double. The wins included four 3s, three 4s, and a 5. They won the rink by a huge 35 shots to 8.

Overall, Cockatoo/Monbulk won the day 120 shots to 46 with four rinks up. Today the line was drawn in the sand, and this side successfully defended it. They are still sixth on the ladder but now they are within one game of the fourth spot. After the one-week break, they play away against Lilydale 4 who are third on the ladder.

Close games for Monbulk in the midweek pennant

By Jack Rollings Round 5 Monbulk 1 played away against Mooroolbark 1 The Mooroolbark green was flooded in the recent rainstorms. The flood water flowed from the football oval at the back of the bowling club. It lifted the synthetic carpet – unplayable apart from a couple of rinks in the centre – insurance job. The ditch walls of the two grass greens showed the level of the flood water with a ring of debris stuck to the carpet like a dirty bathtub. Luckily the clubroom was spared any damage. Before today Mooroolbark 1 was on top of the ladder with four wins and no losses. After today, a similar situation but with five wins. Still the only side with no losses. But Monbulk gave them a decent scare today. And the big board showed Monbulk in front, not far from the finish line.

Jim Bras’ team went into the lunch break with a 3-shot lead. After the break, the opposition won more ends, but Monbulk players were able to claim a few good multiples. They hung on and won the rink 23 shots to 20.

Eric Markham’s team struck an ex-Premier league player, Frank Limb. Frank and his team proved to be a challenge for the Monbulk bowlers. They dropped three 3s, a 5 and a 6, while also picking up a 4 and a 6. mailcommunity.com.au

Brian Smith’s team started slowly but managed to level on the seventh end. Then they picked up a 5 shotter and were looking good.

In the back half they could only pick up four singles and Mooroolbark edged closer. In the end, Monbulk just held Mooroolbark out to take the win 16 shots to 15.

Overall, Monbulk lost a close one 60 shots to 65 with two rinks up. They are still third on the ladder. The next match is at home against Croydon 2 who are only a few points below.

Monbulk 2 played at home against Noble Park 2 Eric Furby’s team had level scores several times. With two ends to go, they were 2 shots down, and that’s when they won a beautiful 5 shotter. Noble Park won a double on the last end but not enough to kick Monbulk off the perch. They won the rink 21 shots to 19.

Graeme Goller’s rink also traded the lead spot several times. With two ends to go, they won a big 4-shotter and looked home and hosed, but Noble Park managed to grab 3 shots on the last end to take the game to a draw 24 shots all.

Peter Koomen ‘s team won thirteen ends including five 3s. On the tenth end, they were 10 shots all. In the back half, Monbulk took the lead and grew the margin. They won the rink 28 shots to 16.

Overall, Monbulk won 73 shots to 59 with two and a half rinks up. They are now second on the ladder, less than a game below top spot. Next week they play at home against Mulgrave CC 6 who are down near the bottom of the ladder. This could be Monbulk’s chance to shoot for the top spot.

Monbulk 3 played away against Yarra Junction 1 It was a close one but Monbulk was pipped on the big board. Monbulk lost 55 shots to 69 with two rinks up.

Barry Adshead’s team struck some tough opponents. They took several clangers off Monbulk and seemed to have answers for everything. Monbulk lost the rink 12 shots to 38.

Bruce Cockerill’s team led for most of the day. They were able to bounce back whenever the opposition won the mat. The end was close, but Monbulk hung on to win the rink 20 shots to 18.

Mike Harris had a strong lead all day, picking up a 3, a 4 and a 5, and only giving away one clanger. Monbulk won the rink 23 shots to 13.

Monbulk is now fourth on the ladder. Next week they play away to Ferntree Gully, who is at the bottom of the ladder. The game will be played on woven carpet, similar to Monbulk’s home ground.
