Questions over street plan

By Shelby Brooks Concerns have been raised by Pakenham candidates surrounding the plan to permanently block Station Street in Officer at the train line.

Pakenham Independent candidate Brett Owen has called for another road connection in Officer to replace the soon-to-be closed Station Street.

As part of the State Government’s Level Crossing Removal Works, the rail crossing will be closed by 2025, directing traffic to re-route to Siding Avenue and Brunt Road as alternative crossing points.

This will add to motorist’s journeys and create new congestion points, Mr Owen said.

“We need an alternate route over the railway line - it can’t just be Siding Avenue and Brunt Road,” he said.

“The Officer Structure Plan talks about a new North/South arterial road. An extension of Bayview Road to Bridge Road/Officer South Road intersection and then on to the Monash Freeway on/off ramps.

“This is a State Government responsibility, and I will be advocating that this new road connection from the intersection of Bayview Road though to Officer South Road be constructed before the Station Street level crossing is removed.”

Mr Owen said it was necessary to create an alternative route to cross the railway given the increasing traffic in the area due to ongoing population growth and development.

He said it was also coupled with the fact traffic will be drawn off the Monash Freeway via the new on/off ramps to the freeway.

Works are still underway on the Monash Freeway ramps at Officer South Road, with the ramps expected to open in late-2022.

“This amazing duplicated road that is being built right now will not have access to the Princes Highway. You will have to weave around all the suburban streets to get to the other side,” he said.

“That is insane.

“We need to have a proper approach for planning the Officer community to have easy access to our roads.”

Labor candidate Emma Vulin was contacted for comment.

According to the State Government, Station Street in Officer will be closed permanently at the rail line as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project.

For locals who use this level crossing regularly, access north and south of the Pakenham line via the Siding Avenue underpass will remain open - around 450 metres east of Station Street.

The 1.9km detour takes approximately four minutes.

Drivers can access Princes Highway and Princes Freeway via Brunt Road, where the State Government is also removing the level crossing to improve traffic flow and increase safety.

This 2.8km detour takes approximately five minutes for drivers.

According to the Level Crossing Removal Project, the road closure in Officer was decided as the best option to remove the level crossing because it was the fastest solution and would be less disruptive for road and rail users during construction.

There has been six near-misses at the Officer crossing since 2012.

The closure removes the risk of incidents between cars, trains and pedestrians.

Major construction on the Station Street level crossing project will begin in 2024.

The community is invited to provide feedback on the proposed closure at Station Street Officer through engage.vic.gov.au by 11.59pm on Sunday 30 October.

$30,000 horse riding boost

By Hugh Pearson Riding for Disabled Australia was presented with a cheque on Tuesday 25 October to continue developing their facilities.

Personal training company Bfirm raised $30,000 from their inaugural charity golf day earlier this month.

“We came out and had a look at the facilities not too long ago and we thought it needs a bit of help,” Bfirm co-founder Michael Harold said.

“It’s obviously in its infancy stages so we want to be a part of it and help it grow to what it can be but it definitely needs the support of the community to get it up and running,” Bfirm co-founder Jarrod Matthews said.

The money raised will contribute to a new undercover area at the RDA’s riding centre.

“It’s going towards an undercover area where people dropping participants of the program off are able to safely sit in the area and watch their kids or who they’re looking after participate in the program,” RDA vicepresident Paul Beck said.

The charity golf day took months of preparation for all involved.

RDA volunteers and horses stand in the show ring. the event and gathering support from the local community.

“There were 23 businesses that got involved in the golf day and then we had other businesses who sponsored holes and were a part of auction items,” Mr Matthews said.

“I think in total there were around 40 businesses that were involved in the whole day.”

Mr Harold and Mr Matthews said they’re

excited to continue supporting RDA and have their sights set on next year’s golf day.

“We can see there’s a fair bit of work we’d like to help them do down here to get it up to where they’d like it to be,” Mr Matthews said.

“It’ll be an annual thing for RDA, the response was phenomenal,” Mr Harold said.

“We’ll learn from this one and we’ll make it even better next year.”

Ernie reclaims his culture

By Sahar Foladi Ernie Rijs, teacher at St Peter’s College Clyde campus, published his first novel, The Crossing, in September.

Coming from migrant Dutch parents who fled their country in the ‘50s after the Second World War for a better future, Mr Rijs, eldest of nine siblings, paved the way just for that.

“They wanted us to have a good future, they wanted us to have a good time. But at the same time, it meant that I lost some of my Dutch culture,” he said.

One of the characters in Mr Rijs’ novel is South Sudanese, which adds a fascinating twist to the whole concept of the story.

His narrative was also derived from his own personal experience as a Hollander. Mr Rijs went back to visit his country after 30 years to reclaim his culture and all that his parents had shared with him about their home country.

“Trying to reclaim who you are is a key part in the story,” he said.

Working in a school environment and meeting different people and students from all walks of life, Mr Rijs has seen adults and students alike make decisions without thinking of consequences, thus the motivation to write.

However, the thought of writing a novel wasn’t always front of mind for Mr Rijs.

“I just wanted to achieve writing something,” he said. But that determination alone did not drive him. Mr Rijs started to encounter students from refugee backgrounds, which changed the entire plot.

“It wasn’t until I arrived in a school in Tarneit, west of Melbourne, where I came in contact with more and more South Sudanese young people, some of them from refugee backgrounds - not all of them,” he said.

“I got inspiration to include a South Sudanese character in the book from a couple of South Sudanese men that I was teaching while

I was there who had really harrowing but interesting stories,” he said.

Mr Rijs has been teaching for 45 years, and has taught a variety of subjects including Hu-

manities, Geography, and Psychology and is teaching English and English Language.

He is working on his second novel with the working title being ‘Coal’ and will also start

work to the sequel of The Crossing next year.

“I had an overall idea, but the story told itself - these people that I got to know, they told the story,” he said.

TikTok warning TikTok users are being warned against participating in dangerous beautification trends and strategies including inhaling tanning products, undertaking contouring using knives and using illegal sun beds, due to devastating side effects and potential health conditions.

Slater and Gordon Public Liability Lawyer Lily Boskovski said young people, especially women, are falling prey to social media influencers promoting inhaling or snorting the synthetic hormone Melanotan to fast-track their summer glow.

“Melanotan is being pushed as a quick way to tan your skin but it’s actually an incredibly unsafe and unregulated product,” Ms Boskovski said.

“There have been previous warnings issued by the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) following reports of people injecting melanotan and other related tanning products, due to the serious side effects.

“Buying a product like this online is extremely dangerous as melanotan is a prescription-only medicine and you do not know what other chemicals the product may contain.

No one should be risking their health and wellbeing for the perfect tan. It pays to question what is being promoted online and to only use a drug if it has been prescribed by a health professional for a specific health condition.”

Side-effects of melanotan include darkened skin, increased moles and freckles, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, flushing of the face, involuntary stretching and yawning and spontaneous erections, according to the TGA. In the UK, side effects such as acne, kidney, brain and heart problems have been reported.

Ms Boskovski said millennials and Gen Z should be cautious when trying out risky beauty trends promoted on social media platforms.

“Some women have been badly scarred and left with permanent injuries as a result of fat freezing procedures gone wrong, both in clinics and at home,” Ms Boskovski said.

Watch for snakes

By Hugh Pearson Two copperhead snakes were found at a school in the City of Casey on Friday 21 October.

Snakebusters snake catcher Raymond Hoser was called to the school by the principal to remove the fully grown, pregnant snakes from the property.

Mr Hoser said it was unusual to see both snakes under the same rock during mating season since the snakes were both female.

Victorian residents can expect to see more snakes in their local areas as it starts to warm up.

Mr Hoser said, on average, he typically receives three to five calls a day from people needing snakes caught and removed from their properties or public areas.

The main snakes that populate the Pakenham, Berwick and the surrounding areas are Tiger and Copperhead snakes.

Always exercise caution and try to avoid snakes if you see one in public.

“If seen, let them move on,” Mr Hoser said.

“If they hang around for some days, call a snake catcher.”

Mr Hoser also advises those with pets to train them to avoid snakes.

“They only bite when they are attacked,” Mr Hoser said.

VCAT grants SBI a stay

By Marcus Uhe The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has granted Cranbourne landfill operator SBI a stay of the EPA’s licence suspension decision.

The stay means that SBI returned to accepting solid inert waste at their Ballarto Road facility on Monday 24 October.

It can continue to operate until a full hearing can be held, or until the outcome of its merits review challenge to the suspension of its landfill operating licence is decided.

SBI’s operating licence was suspended by the EPA on Monday 3 October until 30 January 2023 due to significant and ongoing odour issues and compliance concerns.

The stay was granted on Thursday 20 October.

EPA chief executive Lee Miezis said the organisation did not agree with the decision.

“EPA opposed the granting of a stay of the suspension decision and put a strong case forward about protecting the local community from harms caused at the site, but VCAT has granted one which effectively puts the suspension on hold until its broader merits can be decided in some months’ time,” Mr Miezis said.

“The step to suspend SBI’s licence was taken to ensure SBI would concentrate solely on fixing the issues that are still allowing odour to impact on the Cranbourne community.

“The VCAT decision means SBI can now continue landfill operations at the Cranbourne West inert landfill but must operate in accordance with Victoria’s Environment Protection Act 2017.

“Our notices will ensure that remediation of the factors causing the odour still need to be acted on.”

SBI director Simon Williamson said they will continue to work “diligently” with the EPA to close out the existing improvement notices.

“We once again appreciate the community’s patience in working through these issues and apologise for the inconvenience caused,” Mr Williamson said.

In their ruling, VCAT deputy president Teresa Bisucci and senior member Ian Potts accepted that SBI would suffer “serious financial impacts” including the loss of employees if the stay was not granted.

The financial implications would raise issues with the future viability of the applicant, they found.

The VCAT panel determined that these improvement notices and the “active management with oversight” provided by the EPA would provide low risks of fire and adverse odours.

In opposing the stay, the EPA argued there was significant public interest in protection of the amenity of the community around the licensed premises.

This was a case where community safety outweighed any risk of prejudice to the applicant, the EPA submitted.

SBI argued that a failure to grant a stay of the suspension would render the merits proceeding futile as the merits proceeding could not be listed for hearing before the end of the suspension period of four months.

This appeared to be accepted by the EPA, however, it argued the stay may be refused due to the element of community safety and the need to protect the public.

A coroner is investigating how a newborn baby came to be found dead inside a Coles shopping bag in Melbourne’s South East.

The baby’s body was found in the backyard of a home in Clyde North in May last year, the Coroners Court in Melbourne heard on Thursday 13 October.

Police have not laid charges over the incident. The infant’s mother, who lived in a neighbouring home, has denied being pregnant or giving birth to the baby.

Forensic examinations found the infant was aged between 37 and 38 weeks’ gestation at death, the court heard.

Coroner Katherine Lorenz said the evidence before her showed the baby may have been born alive.

The mother took laxatives and other over-the-counter medication after she began experiencing abdominal pains in the days before 28 May 2021, counsel assisting the coroner said.

She spoke to a GP the following day, over the phone, but denied she was pregnant.

She told police she began experiencing increase abdominal pressure on 30 May, and she went to the toilet where she passed blood.

Her partner gave her a Coles plastic shopping bag, where the woman claimed she placed soiled clothing and slippers and then took a bath. The woman said she washed some of the clothing in the shower and left the slippers inside the bag.

She reported feeling weak and lying down after her bath, before she cleaned the toilet area and disposed of the Coles bag in a garbage bin. She couldn’t recall how she disposed of the bag or which bin she placed it in.

The woman’s housemate came home and urged her to go to hospital. Upon arrival at the emergency department, she was found to be fully dilated and appeared to have delivered a baby.

Medical staff said she was surprised and denied any knowledge of pregnancy symptoms, or having given birth to a baby. Police searched her Clyde North property later that evening, but no baby was found.

Her neighbours found a Coles shopping bag in their backyard with a dead baby inside, about 11.30am on 31 May 2021.

An inquest into the matter has been listed to begin on 5 June, 2023.

Ideal time to foster a dog

By Marcus Uhe If you’ve ever considered fostering a large dog in need of some tender loving care, the Lost Dogs’ Home of Cranbourne need your support now more than ever.

A letter-box drop campaign is set to begin shortly, encouraging people to provide a temporary home for dogs larger than 15 kilograms as the home struggles to keep up with demand for their services.

Shelter manager at the Cranbourne Lost Dogs’ Home, Allie Small said the home needs the support of the community.

“We’ve had a sustained increase in dogs coming as strays and surrenders and a massive decrease in the number of people adopting or interested in adopting,” Ms Small said.

“The number is increasing faster than we can home the dogs.

“The community are telling us they want dogs to be adopted. Regardless of why they come in, we will do everything to work with dogs that are suitable for community. But we need community to engage with the dogs.”

Ms Small attributed the swell in surrenders at the organisation to a number of factors including cost of living pressures, a return to preCovid living conditions and travel, and a high number of dogs that were bred in recent years unmatched by community desires.

Those who do decide to foster will be supported by the Lost Dogs’ Home, with bedding, food, toys and vet care all supplied, along with wellbeing support for the animal itself.

Meagan Carter has been a foster carer for the last 12 months and is currently looking after her sixth foster pet, Jackson.

She said fostering suited her life circumstances better than undertaking a bigger challenge of adopting.

“I wanted a dog but wasn’t sure if I was ready for the commitment,” Ms Carter said.

Meagan Carter is encouraging anyone interested in fostering a dog to contact the Lost Dogs’ Home in Cranbourne.

“I know a dog is a big commitment and I wasn’t sure if I could give it everything it needed. If I did want to travel, I know that it’s not an issue.”

Not only does the fosterer benefit from having a four-legged friend in the house, but the dog will appreciate the new surrounds and being able to live outside of a cage.

“One of my fosters, I picked her up because she was self-harming in her pen.

“Seeing her relax when I got her home and see her calm and happy was amazing.

“It gives you a sense of satisfaction helping to work them and find their forever home.”

Emilija’s destiny awaits

Dean Kinsman knows what it takes to make it to the elite level.

Currently the Head Basketball Coach of Rowville Secondary College’s Rowville Sports Academy, Mr Kinsman represented the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL during the 1980s and has been involved in coaching at various levels, including the Australian Institute of Sport.

He’s overseen the development of many protégés over the years, but current student Emilija Dakic has him excited.

And rightly so; Emilija will achieve a lifelong dream in Guam next month when she dons the green and gold for her country at the Under 15 FIBA Oceania Basketball Tournament.

“You always think that’s the major goal (playing for Australia) every time you go into the gym or onto the court,” Emilija said.

“It’s just where you want to get to and I think it’s amazing to have that opportunity and the people around you to be able to do that, it’s such a privilege.”

Emilija’s love of basketball began at the Narre Magic Basketball Club as a seven-yearold and was strengthened through fiercely competitive games in the backyard with her siblings Marko, Danika and Ava, under the watchful eye of her step-father, Damien Mizzi.

Playing the role of floor-general, a lot is asked of her on the offensive end. But it’s her tenacity without the ball that stand-outs on the court, according to Mr Kinsman.

“She was the captain of the Vic Metro and she stood out with her elite capabilities, defensively in particular,” Mr Kinsman said.

“Her court coverage and her speed is elite, and that held her in good stead to be picked in this team.

“She’s a great distributor, great decision maker, knows how to get people the ball at the right time, and plays with the right tempo.”

Emilija likens her style of game to Australian and Brooklyn Nets point guard Patty Mills and Portland Trailblazers six-time NBA All-star Damian Lillard, while her Serbian background draws her eyes towards Denver Nuggets Serbian Superstar and back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.

“I like the way they (Lillard and Mills) come off screens and their ability to create for other people,” she said.

“I like to play a quick but composed match; set up the plays, call the shots, and I love the defensive side of the game.”

Unsurprisingly, all three of those players listed are highly regarded leaders within their respective basketball programs.

No Aussie basketball fan will forget watching Mills lead the Boomers to their historic Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, capped by a 42-point performance as they overcame Slovenia to clinch their first Olympic medal.

Similarly, Jokic and Lillard have transformed their respective teams from under-

Steering the ship as her team’s primary ballhandler, she said she admires Jokic’s approach to supporting his teammates.

“I think your team has to be like your family, you have each other’s back all the time and I think that’s what he does very well.”

It’s her attitude towards the game that has Mr Kinsman seeing her enjoying a long and successful career on the hardwood.

“Emelija’s really well grounded and mature for her age and I think that leadership comes through when she plays that position on the court, which is really critical.

“She has a lot of empathy for people and that comes out in that point guard position, because you’re that controlling player on the floor, distributing the ball and organising the group. I think to feed off your point guard, you need a good relationship with each other.

“She definitely has the maturity, mindset and the work ethic needed.”

Regardless of her achievements later in her career, the Dakic name will go down in folklore at the Cavs, as she has become the first Casey Basketball Association representative to be selected for the national team.

While her fierce loyalty to the Cavs will remain, she has her sights set on a professional career overseas.

“I want to see how far I can go, and keep taking things as they come.

“Basketball teaches you a life lesson for 40

minutes. You can go from being frustrated, to happy, to sad, to having to make decisions and it just brings everyone together, this one game.”

Successful tech business

The husband and wife run company was recently awarded the Best Complex Electronic Technology Business 2022 at the Australian Made Awards - an award the company’s managing director Ray Keefe said is “right up our alley”.

“I set the business up with the aim to design products that could be made in Australia,” Mr Keefe said.

“That was 25 years ago and since then we’ve worked on more than 300 products.”

There is no doubt Mr Keefe knows the manufacturing business - and the impact it can have on the entire workforce.

“The reason we focus on products made in Australia is that manufacturing creates lots of other jobs around it and it also creates fundamental value.

“If you look at some of the most successful modern economies, such as Japan and Germany, they are all heavily invested in manufacturing.

“Manufacturing creates lots of jobs and lots of leverage for other businesses and the other important thing is that we spread wealth throughout the economy, because that way it employs people at every level.”

With its head office in Narre Warren, Successful Endeavours works on a range of projects in the technology and software design field.

“We’ve added Bluetooth to it to add to an app on your phone, so a shift supervisor can be notified and can respond more effectively to the hazard and log it to the internet web ser-

vice so you have traceability,” he said.

The winners of the Manufacturer’s Monthly 2022 Endeavour Awards are due to be announced on 3 November, but Mr Keefe said being a finalist is already a win for the business.

While Mr Keefe heads the technological side of the business, there is no underestimating the contribution of wife Junette to the Successful Endeavours team.

“She doesn’t consider herself to be technologically minded, but she does a great deal,” Mr Keefe said.

“She does the websites, accounts, she also does custom coding, she solders and assembles products, she’s proofread software and fixed it.

“Working as a husband and wife team has been really useful for us because she covers my blindspots really well.”

For Mr and Mrs Keefe, being businessminded isn’t about profiteering.

“Business needs a purpose beyond making money; the idea that business is just about making money is a lie.

“Business is the modern partnership for working together to change the world for the better.”

Together, Mr and Mrs Keefe decided they would only commit to projects they believe would make the world a better place, Mr Keefe said.

“We’ve got grandchildren and I want to continue to leave them an economy full of value.

“Manufacturing is a strategically important component in being able to achieve that, which is why I picked it in the first place.”

Wominjeka: Art students unite over their love of books

By Eleanor Wilson Bookworms at Berwick Lodge Primary School can rejoice as a community-minded library box hits the school’s main office.

A set of two library boxes were kindly built and donated to the school by the Akoonah Park Men’s Shed, who have spent several weeks making them in the shed’s woodwork room.

Once the boxes were donated, Year 5/6 students from the school’s art club got hard at work to bring the boxes to life.

An Indigenous theme was chosen for the first box, which saw the box covered in traditional dot paintings, animals and a welcoming message reading ‘Wominjeka’ - welcome in the Woi wurrung language of the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.

“I’m trying to bring a lot more Indigenous art into the classroom,” art teacher Jo Zammit said.

“They all had a go, we’ve used acrylic paint and Posca pens for the details. They designed the drawings and everything by themselves.”

Akoonah Park Men’s Shed member Phil Lardner, who helped build the boxes, said he was impressed with the painting.

Students at Berwick Lodge Primary School’s art club spent their lunchtimes painting the box.

“I think all the kids deserve a good pat on the back,” he said.

The students will now turn their attention to painting the second library box, which will be located on the school grounds for students to borrow from and donate books.

The second box will be inspired by art by Australian artist Peter Cromer, famous for his contemporary work depicting Australian animals.

Spontaneous Broadway act

By Hugh Pearson Spontaneous Broadway improv group is making its way to the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday 4 November to perform their hit show.

Spontaneous Broadway pays tribute to musical theatre while simultaneously satirising it through improvised renditions of famous musicals.

“It’s a lot of fun, it reaches a really broad audience and we love it because of that,” Spontaneous Broadway cast member Russell Fletcher said.

Mr Fletcher said he’s excited to be coming back to Pakenham.

“I really love that theatre, I’ve performed there a few times and it’s good to be in theatres that’s for sure,” Mr Fletcher said.

“We’ve got a pretty solid fan base here. We’ve performed our Spontaneous Broadway show here before and it was really well received.”

The acclaimed improv actors lean heavily on input from audience members during the show.

Audience members will provide the stars of the show with a random title which will be turned into an improvised song.

After a number of pitches, the audience will vote to choose the improvised musical they want to see on the night.

Mr Fletcher said the style of the show makes it feel fresh every time they perform and keeps them on their toes.

“They don’t care if they make mistakes or look silly. It’s all part of the fun. We’re not too precious,” Mr Fletcher said.

“Every show is an opening night and a closing night as well.”

Most plays and musicals are very meticulous when they perform and practise for months or years to nail every little thing.

Mr Fletcher said he likes to encourage chaos in the show to make it more entertaining for those attending.

“Things can go off the rails which we love, and if things are going too easily I kind of challenge them and put them out of their comfort zone and in the moment,” Mr Fletcher said.

Attendees will be treated to the performance of a lifetime from some of Australia’s best and brightest improv actors.

“They’re going to see some of Australia’s most experienced, beloved and passionate improvisation performers,” Mr Fletcher said.

Performers on the night include Amanda Buckley, Rik Brown, Andrew McClelland and Louisa Fitzhardinge.

Coinciding with National Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 19 October, Mr Breskin announced plans for the party’s Big Bike Build, which will see $2.5 billion invested in hundreds of kilometres of safe and separated bike ‘superhighways’ across the state, if the Greens win government at the upcoming election.

It was one of four solutions he put forward on the night to combat rising numbers of emissions caused by cars and trucks on the roads, in the hopes that cycling would provide a valid alternative to driving.

“Transport is victoria’s biggest growing source of carbon emissions,” Mr Breskin said.

“We in the South East suburbs are in a major growth corridor for Greater Melbourne and no council is bearing that brunt more than the City of Casey.

“There are some serious challenges we need to address, so I come her with a very clear message for the council on transport.

“To tackle the climate crisis, Victoria needs to rapidly cut emissions from the transport sector, and at the heart of our transport policies.

“The State Government needs to support people to make that shift out of polluting petrol vehicles and into cleaner, cheaper climatefriendly forms of transport.”

Along with the funding for bike paths, Mr Breskin suggested an upgrade of the current public transport network, a push for more electric vehicles and a clean transport action plan, that would set “mandated targets” for emissions reduction targets.

“Without (a clean transport action plan), we’re seeing billions spent on transport projects, which means 200 kilometres of new widened freeways that are going to lock in more carbon pollution, put thousands more cars into our suburbs, and that is simply not compatible with dealing with the climate crisis.”

In contrast, Liberals have commmitted $10 billion to improving Victoria’s roads over 10 years and $175 million to the upgrade of

Berwick-Cranbourne Road, which was announced by Gembrook MP Brad Battin at the forum.

He did, however, commend the council’s advocacy for the Clyde Rail extension, which the Liberals committed to completing, if they win government.

The Labor Party completed an upgrade of the Cranbourne line in February 2022 and continue to forge ahead with their level cross-

ing removal project, with plans to make the Pakenham line level-crossing free by 2025.

The forum was attended by Mr Breskin, Mr Battin and Labor South-East Metropolitan candidate Michael Galea. Each representative was given six minutes to address their party’s stance on the topic before fielding questions from the audience.

To illustrate the point, let’s take the example of furniture stores. Stores that fit into the ‘product leadership’ category might include James Said, Cocolea and Gainsville furniture.

These companies have unique furniture that are unashamedly expensive and buyers from these stores want the best.

Stores that fit the ‘customer intimacy’ space might include Harvey Norman and Focus on Furniture.

Their approach is highly customer-centric,

You are the business people go to if they want the best and don’t mind paying for it.

If you focus on customer intimacy, then ensuring the customer gets what they want is your primary objective.

You don’t claim to have the best products, but you offer value for money and are willing to be very flexible in order to satisfy customer needs.

Businesses in this category really care about looking after their customers and building great relationships so that the customers keep coming back.

You are not the cheapest but neither are your products high price.

Those businesses in the ‘operational excellence’ space typically offer the cheapest products.

One of the issues that I see businesses struggle with is how to price their products or services.

Charge too much and you run the risk of being seen as gouging or ripping customers off and price too low, customers may ask ‘where’s the catch?’ or ‘what short-cuts have been taken?’. Pricing is indeed a highly sensitive topic and getting it wrong can literally cost your business thousands, but in their book ‘The Discipline of Market Leaders’, Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema give some insights as to how to think about this.

According to the authors, a business can be associated with only one of three different categories: 1. Product Leadership.

2. Customer Intimacy.

3. Operational Excellence.

At first sight it may be tempting to think that your business is in two of these or perhaps even all three!

However, in reality, no business can really be in more than one category without confusing its customers and itself about where it belongs and where its primary focus should be.

The definitions of each category shed some light on this, so let’s just focus on products; although, the same holds true for services.

If you are a product leader, then you are one of the best in class and you charge accordingly.

You are highly innovative, typically unique and invest heavily all of which are expensive and so you charge accordingly.

Marion’s amazing journey

By David Nagel Marion Stevens arrived in Australia in May 1973 - a month short of her 30th birthday with a set of English wooden bowls part of her limited possessions.

It’s remarkable to think that almost 50 years later, the now Cardinia Waters resident – a world champion and Commonwealth Games gold medallist - has been inducted into the Bowls Australia Hall of Fame.

Originally from Hayes, Middlesex, the daughter of a bricklayer lived an ordinary childhood before moving to the country, Yately, near the Sandhurst Military Academy.

It was there she met her future husband Bryan, who worked in a factory before joining Marion’s dad on the trowel.

Bryan also worked at his brother’s coal yard, living attached to the grounds that provided much-needed resources for people when the big winter hit in 1962/63.

“People would line up down the street, with a pram, a bag, whatever they could carry coal in, there was always people there, and it wasn’t normal for kids,” Marion explained.

“The rest of the family was settled, but we had young kids (daughters Julie and Debbie) and wanted to do something different…we said ‘let’s go to Australia’.

“Friends picked us up at the airport and within two weeks of arriving we had bought a car, put a deposit on a house, found somewhere to rent, got some furniture together, and we’ve called Australia home ever since, we’ve never been homesick once.”

Bryan, Marion and the two kids lived in Keysborough, their house within a stone’s throw of the now Parkmore Shopping Centre with the Keysborough Bowling Club on the other side of Cheltenham Road.

“We just walked in one day and sat on a seat, it was the weekend and they were playing pennant, a member of the club came over and asked if we were with the visiting team,” Marion recalled.

“He chatted to us a bit more and then called the secretary over and said ‘get these people a nomination form’.

“We had nothing, a set of wooden bowls - that were illegal in Australia anyway – no uniform, and a little knowledge of bowls from some loose and relaxed games in England.

“But we were made so welcome at Keysborough, they were some of the happiest days, our kids were made welcome and the bowls club, and our neighbours, became our family.”

Marion showed natural talent from the outset, winning the first of a staggering 19 club championships in 1976.

“The first year I got beaten in the first round, the next year I won two rounds and the third year went to finals.

“I won the club championship and then the State Champion of Champions.

“When that happened, I got invited to trial for state teams.

“My first trial was at Karingal, in a howling wind, so I took Bryan’s bowls which were heavier than mine, bowled well, got selected, and was a constant member of the state team for 19 years.

“I was selected for 20, but had laryngitis one year.”

Marion wasn’t fully prepared for her first taste of representing Victoria.

“It’s a whole lot of emotions, you’re nervous, you’re excited, the adrenaline gets going, it’s a massive step up,” she said.

“I would love to have played now, where men and women are virtually equal, because ladies club bowls back then was nothing like state bowls.

“If we could play against the men, like they do today, we would have been more prepared for the step up.

“But nerves are good, they keep you on your toes and get you thinking about playing bowls.”

Being a bricklayer Bryan always had grander plans, with the family moving from Keysborough to Rowville, then to Berwick, before settling 12 years ago at the Cardinia Waters village in Pakenham.

Those moves corresponded with Marion’s club career, with stints at Keysborough, Mitcham, Berwick, Dandenong Club and now at Cardinia Waters.

The elevation from club level, through state, to international bowls came in 1988 for Marion.

After a successful event with Victoria, she was selected to represent Australia in the Bicentennial International Tournament at Tweed Heads, winning gold in the Triples and silver in the Fours.

It was then off to Auckland for the 1988 World Championships, and what Marion considers her greatest achievement, winning gold in the Triples and repeating the dose in the Fours.

“In the Triples we were a long way behind against England,” Marion reflected.

“I played lead, against Norma Shaw, the English champion, which was quite daunting in itself.

“I think we were 10 shots behind with six ends to play.

“It wasn’t looking good for us, and then Norma Shaw rolled the jack into the ditch.

“I rolled a shorter end and that was our opportunity to pounce.

“Gradually we pegged it back and you could tell by their body language that they weren’t comfortable with it.

“The scores were close to level coming to the last end.

“I rolled the jack, but left my first bowl probably four or five feet short (grimaces).

“I put my next one six inches from the jack, and the nearest anyone came to shifting it was our second, who bowled it a little bit heavy and narrow and it just missed my bowl.

“That’s how it stayed…I held the shot that won the game and the gold medal.

“It’s all about the team, but to play my role was very satisfying.”

Marion then returned to Auckland in 1990, winning gold in the Fours at a tense Commonwealth Games.

“We played New Zealand in the final and Daphne Shaw was in our team, a beautiful

lady, beautiful bowler, and we held the winning shot,” Marion said.

“But New Zealand killed it and we had to play the last end again…my legs were actually shaking.

“I’ve never had it happen before…it was that tense.

“Daphne had the caravan park in Lake Cathie at the time and she turned to me and said, ‘I’d rather be at home cleaning toilets than watching this bowl come down’ (laughs).

“I thought that was a very funny thing to say, but that’s how tense it was.”

Marion Stevens has achieved so much in the game of bowls, being a state and national selector and is still playing pennant bowls for Cardinia Waters on weekends.

But her induction to the Bowls Australia Hall of Fame caught her a little off guard.

“Bryan rang me and said Bowls Australia are looking for you, and I haven’t had anything to do with them for 20 years,” Marion said excitedly.

“They asked me on the phone if I would accept induction into the Hall of Fame.

“I said, wow, that’s wonderful.

“It was a wonderful night, one that I will never forget, meeting people that I haven’t seen for 20 years.

“I was dreading making a speech, but I spoke about the game and how great it is and how much the game had changed.

“It’s evolved, and I’ve loved every minute of it.

“Everything has to evolve to survive.”

Marion said things had now started to sink in since her induction on the Gold Coast earlier this month.

She also, typically, but inaccurately, downplayed her stature in the game.

“Bryan printed out the Bowls Australia Hall of Fame list and I’ve played with or against probably 75-percent of them,” Marion said.

“It’s not until you look at something like that that you realise how special it is.

“I know it’s happened, but there is still a bit of disbelief.

“It’s a little bit dream like because in many ways I think I’ve been quite insignificant to other people in bowls.

“I’ve just plodded along, competing well, not a singles player or skip who get most of the kudos.

“I’ve just plodded along and done the best I can and been part of many successful teams.”

Melbourne Cup double-header weekend at Nyora

By Dean Thompson This weekend, the now traditional Nyora Raceway Melbourne Cup weekend doubleheader, will see the terrific little entertainment venue in Nyora kick start the season for Speedway competitors and motorsport fans.

The Wingless Sprint category heads into town on Saturday night for a round of the state wide super series, with more than forty five entries in that class alone.

Other action will come from Open Standard Saloon’s with their annual 20/20 feature event and supporting action from Victorian Speedway Council Junior 1200cc Sedans, Speedway Sedans Victoria Junior Sedans, Unlimited Sedans, and Sports Sedans and on Sunday – the addition of Division 2 Hot Rods is also planned.

Not only will the Wingless Sprints compete in a state series round on Saturday, they will return on Sunday for a local feature event, which is putting up $5000 in prize money, including a decent winners cheque at the end of the night.

Motorsport fans will see plenty of Nyora’s local heroes that include the likes of Kiarna Barton and Chase Doherty in the 1200s.

Racing begins at 5:00pm on both nights at Grundy Avenue Nyora at the recreational reserve.

Finals fever in the darts

By David Nagel It’s time for finals to begin in the South West Gippsland Dart League (SWGDL) after a thrilling conclusion to the home-and-away season last week.

In one of the standout performances of the season, Dean Gibbs from Snipers threw a fantastic 14-dart leg as the second-placed Snipers took care of third-placed Warriors with an emphatic 10-5 victory.

Gibbs finished the home-and-away season with 124 tons, a whopping 31 clear of his nearest pursuer.

Snipers will now take on top-team Just Social in this week’s division one second-semifinal, full of confidence after their last-round triumph.

Meanwhile Just Social lost its first game of the season in round 18, 9-6 to fifth-placed Wizards, but there were extenuating circumstances.

Just Social had just four players on the night, giving the Wizards the opportunity to inflict the biggest upset of the season.

Just Social will be back to its best for this week’s first round of finals, while the Wizards will take a huge confidence boost into their division two semi-final against Gembrook.

In other round-18 results, Paky One defeated Rebels 9-6, Gembrook overcame Bullseyes 10-5, and Mud Rats defeated Fore 9-6 in a battle of the bottom two teams on the ladder.

The SWGDL now splits into two divisions for finals, with teams one to four – Just Social, Snipers, Warriors and Paky One – making up division one and teams five to eight – Wizards, Rebels, Bullseyes and Gembrook – fighting for the division two title.

In division one, Just Social and Snipers have earned a double-chance but all other finals this week are cut-throat eliminators.
