The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) has granted Cranbourne landfill operator SBI a stay of the EPA’s licence suspension decision.

The stay means that SBI returned to accepting solid inert waste at their Ballarto Road facility on Monday 24 October.

It can continue to operate until a full hearing can be held, or until the outcome of its

merits review challenge to the suspension of its landfill operating licence is decided.

SBI’s operating licence was suspended by the EPA on Monday 3 October until 30 January 2023 due to significant and ongoing odour issues and compliance concerns.

The stay was granted on Thursday 20 October.

EPA chief executive Lee Miezis said the organisation did not agree with the decision.

Pushing for better mobile coverage

By Marcus Uhe The City of Casey is advocating for stronger mobile connectivity throughout the municipality to accommodate the needs of the evergrowing community, ahead of the State Election.

The council is seeking priority roll-out of mobile towers and improved connectivity as part of the Connecting Victoria program.

Connecting Victoria is a $550 million State Government initiative fast-tracking better mobile coverage and broadband across the state.

The Labor Party announced in June partnerships with Optus and TPG Telecom to deliver four new mobile towers and upgrade 11 towers from 4G to 5G across Melbourne’s outer South East, with residents and businesses in Beaconsfield, Berwick, Botanic Ridge, Cardinia, Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Cranbourne North, Cranbourne West, Dandenong South, Endeavour Hills, Eumemmerring, Hallam and Hampton Park all set to benefit.

“Outer Melbourne suburbs like Cranbourne and tourism hotspots like the Mornington Peninsula need mobile services that can keep up with increasing demand and keep Victorians connected,” Minister for Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy Jaala Pulford said on 30 June.

The investment was welcomed by chair of administrators Noelene Duff, who at the time said high-speed internet and reliable mobile infrastructure are critical to accelerating economic and social opportunities in Casey.

Liberal candidate for Cranbourne, Jagdeep Singh, noted the stark difference between those living in Clyde North, and those living in neighbouring suburbs.

“It’s not an issue for people living in Cranbourne, so it shouldn’t be an issue for people living in Clyde and Clyde North in 2022,” Mr Singh said.

“Only the Liberals and Nationals will get on with delivering this important service.”

Road fix promise

By Marcus Uhe The intersection at Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road in Clyde North will be one of three major Melbourne roads redeveloped under a reelected Labor Government as part of a suburban roads blitz.

Traffic lights would be installed to make the busy crossing safer for pedestrians, and help traffic move through the area more quickly, at a cost of $70 million.

Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said the upgrade will benefit the residents of her electorate. “Thousands of Cranbourne families use Thompsons Road every single day,” Ms Richards said.

The Liberal Party last week committed $175 million to upgrading BerwickCranbourne Road, between Thompsons Road in Berwick through to Sladen Street in Cranbourne.

The upgrades of Thompsons Road and the Clyde Road Corridor are key advocacy projects for the City of Casey.

Warneet wants its jetties

By Marcus Uhe Tensions over the future of the Warneet jetties are threatening to spill overboard.

The North jetty was closed in June 2020 due to safety concerns, as was a section of the South jetty, before it was completely shut by Parks Victoria on 20 September.

Parks Victoria believe the North jetty needs to be replaced, however, locals believe the existing structure can be restored.

Commodore of the Warneet Motor Yacht Club Alex Stroud said the club and the Warneet Foreshore Committee of Management secured the services of an independent engineer to inspect the North jetty in June, who presented a report that determined it could be repaired at a significantly lower cost than what had been suggested by Parks Victoria.

They claim that the plans were rejected by Better Boating Victoria, to the dismay of Mr Stroud.

“The heart and soul of the community has been ripped out,” he said.

“Land-based fisherman cannot fish off of either jetty.

“We’re not getting anywhere. We’ve spent money ourselves on engineering reports but they still won’t work with us.”

The committee and the club have requested engineering reports from Better Boating Victoria but say they have not received them.

Club member and Foreshore Committee of Management member Keith Williams said it was “ludicrous” that the Southern Jetty had been closed.

“Parks Victoria closed it entirely and we have no idea why,” Mr Williams said.

“We think there are alternatives available but we need to see the engineer’s report.

“We’re just trying to help. We believe that if the main structure is still in good condition, that we can repair it for less than $350,000.”

Now situated in the seat of Bass, the issue is shaping as a key topic ahead of November’s State Election.

Liberal candidate Aaron Brown said he was attempting to secure $500,000 in funding from the party to repair the North jetty, based on quotes received from the Foreshore Committee of Management.

“If I am elected in November I will advocate for both jetties to be repaired and re-opened,” Mr Brown said.

“I am disappointed that the government has chosen to not maintain the Warneet jetties adequately over many years. This lack of maintenance of jetties has occurred all over Victoria

ria reiterated their stance that the jetties were closed to ensure public safety.

“We understand the importance of Warneet jetties to the local community and we are working with Parks Victoria to progress detailed designs as part of the Warneet Boating Precinct Plan,” the spokesperson said.

Ahead of summer, the importance of the jetties cannot be understated.

Jetties became a life-saving resource during the deadly Black Summer fires in 2019-20, as many used the jetties at Mallacoota to escape the flames.

Should Warneet, a town only accessible via Warneet Road, face similar circumstances and Warneet Road become inaccessible, the jetties

and has most likely been used as a justification to close these important community assets.

“That the Warneet and surrounding community has been left with no jetty access for an undefined period of time is unacceptable.

“The Liberal Party recognises some of these state-wide issues and has introduced a policy to return fishing and boating licence revenue to fishing and boating assets, which could be up to $40 million per year.”

Independent candidate Jeni Jobe said she would advocate for the maintenance and responsibility of jetty infrastructure to be a matter for Better Boating Victoria as opposed to Parks Victoria as a “more logical” option, and for the community to be actively included in a “transparent and meaningful consultation process” on the future of the jetties.

“I support Alex Stroud’s call to have the community infrastructure restored as soon as possible,” Ms Jobe said.

“I am currently advocating for the jetties to be restored and sharing Warneet’s situation with other waterline townships.”

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said the government is continuing to work with the parties involved.

“I want to emphasise that we continue to work to progress the next steps, with Better Boating Victoria, as part of the Warneet Boating Precinct Plan,” Ms Crugnale said.

“A priority of this work, is that detailed designs for the North and South jetties are expected in the coming weeks. I have no doubt that we can all work productively, and collectively, towards getting them funded.”

Nationals candidate Brett Tassari said he is also advocating for the jetties to be repaired and reopened.

Detailed designs for the Warneet boating precinct, including engineering reports, are set to be released in late 2022 when they are finalised.

Work on track Level Crossing Removal Project staff expect works to be completed at Merinda Park Station in November.

Station access and the lifts will be periodically out of service as crews complete work on the access ramps and undertake landscaping.

“While crews work on the finishing touches, both platforms remain fully accessible via lifts installed as part of the new station build,” Level Crossing Removal Project program d0irector, Steve Brown said.

Merinda Park Station opened to passengers in February as part of the upgrade to the Cranbourne train line.

The line is expected to be level crossing free by 2025.

Watch for snakes

By Hugh Pearson Two copperhead snakes were found at a school in the City of Casey on Friday 21 October.

Snakebusters snake catcher Raymond Hoser was called to the school by the principal to remove the fully grown, pregnant snakes from the property.

Mr Hoser said it was unusual to see both snakes under the same rock during mating season since the snakes were both female.

Victorian residents can expect to see more snakes in their local areas as it starts to warm up.

Mr Hoser said, on average, he typically receives three to five calls a day from people needing snakes caught and removed from their properties or public areas.

The main snakes that populate the Pakenham, Berwick and the surrounding areas are Tiger and Copperhead snakes.

Always exercise caution and try to avoid snakes if you see one in public.

“If seen, let them move on,” Mr Hoser said.

“If they hang around for some days, call a snake catcher.”

Mr Hoser also advises those with pets to train them to avoid snakes.

“They only bite when they are attacked,” Mr Hoser said.

Meagan Carter has been a foster carer for the last 12 months and is currently looking after her sixth foster pet, Jackson.

She said fostering suited her life circumstances better than undertaking a bigger challenge of adopting.

“I wanted a dog but wasn’t sure if I was ready for the commitment,” Ms Carter said.

“I know a dog is a big commitment and I wasn’t sure if I could give it everything it needed.

“If I did want to travel, I know that it’s not an issue.”

Not only does the fosterer benefit from having a four-legged friend in the house, but the dog will appreciate the new surrounds and being able to live outside of a cage.

“One of my fosters, I picked her up because she was self-harming in her pen.

“Seeing her relax when I got her home and see her calm and happy was amazing.

“It gives you a sense of satisfaction helping to work them and find their forever home.”

Her advice to anyone considering offering a temporary home?

“Just do it. The Lost Dogs’ Home is really supportive and if you feel overwhelmed, there’s a wealth of knowledge and support available. There’s absolutely no reason not to, there’s a dog for everyone.”

Shelter manager at the Cranbourne Lost Dogs’ Home, Allie Small said the home needs the support of the community.

“We’ve had a sustained increase in dogs coming as strays and surrenders and a massive decrease in the number of people adopting or interested in adopting,” Ms Small said.

“The number is increasing faster than we can home the dogs.

“The community are telling us they want dogs to be adopted. Regardless of why they come in, we will do everything to work with dogs that are suitable for community. But we need community to engage with the dogs.”

Ms Small attributed the swell in surrenders at the organisation to a number of factors including cost of living pressures, a return to pre-Covid living conditions and travel, and a high number of dogs that were bred in recent years unmatched by community desires.

Child predator jailed for grooming girls

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A “relentless” Cranbourne East predator has been jailed for grooming two girls aged about 12 and 14.

Mohammad Jan Azimy, 23, was found guilty by a Victorian County Court jury of five counts of encouraging children under 16 to engage in sex.

He was also found guilty of stalking and persistently breaching an intervention order as well as two charges of grooming for sexual conduct.

In sentencing on 18 October, Judge Trevor Wraight said Azimy pursued the girls with messages for months in 2019 and 2020, even after an intervention order was served to protect the younger girl.

“The text messages and your conduct demonstrated a determined and relentless plan to engage in sexual activity with the victims.”

In defiance of the order, Azimy stalked the girl around a library and later repeatedly contacted her on Facebook Messenger, Snapchat and Instagram with lewd messages.

He has been remanded since his arrest on 14 January 2020.

At trial, Azimy pleaded not guilty, arguing that he believed the girls were over 16, and that he didn’t understand the nature of the intervention order.

But the jury found he knew enough about the order to know not to approach or contact the victim, Judge Wraight noted.

Azimy, who was 21-22 at the time of his offending, had no prior convictions, was “immature for his age” and with a “compromised”

Cars seized Two Clyde North drivers had their cars impounded in Greater Dandenong on the night of Friday 14 October as part of an ongoing police operation targeting hoons.

About 10.57pm, Operation Sumatra police allegedly detected a 19-year-old driver speeding at 127km/h in a 80km/h speed zone on Princes Highway, Springvale.

Police allege the probationary driver, who held his licence for less than a month, was leaving a hoon gathering at the time.

His VW Polo GTI was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $969.80.

His driver’s licence was immediatedly suspended and was expected to be charged.

About 12.30am, a 28-year-old disqualified driver was allegedly intercepted in her friend’s BMW in Noble Park.

The car’s registered owner was a passenger at the time. He was also disqualified from driving, allegedly found with a flick-knife and arrested over an “outstanding matter”, police said.

The BMW was impounded for 30 days. The driver was expected to be charged.

Driver arrest A man was found guilty by a Victorian County Court jury of five counts of encouraging children under 16 to engage in sex. intellect.

Judge Wraight rated his rehabilitation prospects as “good” with strong family support.

His insight into his crimes had improved with professional counselling.

Born in Afghanistan, Azimy and his family have been living in Australia since 2016 on a permanent resident visa.

Still a non-citizen, he is now at risk of deportation for his crimes.

Judge Wraight said Azimy’s “very serious”

offences could be “highly damaging” to his victims.

The sentence must serve as a “strong reminder” to Azimy, as well as primarily protect the community.

Azimy was jailed for 10 months plus a twoyear community corrections order.

The CCO includes 200 hours of unpaid work, sexual offender treatment and supervision.

He must report as a registered sex offender for life.

A driver has been arrested after fleeing from police across the South East on Friday 24 October.

Police said they tried to intercept a silver Nissan Pulsar believed to be linked to a recent attempted armed robbery in Dandenong North.

The Nissan allegedly sped off on Western Port Highway at Hastings about 10.25am.

Followed by the Air Wing, the car was driven erratically in Cranbourne and Dandenong, police said. It continued despite striking stop sticks in Dandenong South. The car stopped at the corner of Wellington and Stud Roads, Rowville. The 19-year-old driver from Dandenong fled on foot and was arrested nearby.

Emilija’s destiny awaits

Dean Kinsman knows what it takes to make it to the elite level.

Currently the Head Basketball Coach of Rowville Secondary College’s Rowville Sports Academy, Mr Kinsman represented the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL during the 1980s and has been involved in coaching at various levels, including the Australian Institute of Sport.

He’s overseen the development of many protégés over the years, but current student Emilija Dakic has him excited.

And rightly so; Emilija will achieve a lifelong dream in Guam next month when she dons the green and gold for her country at the Under 15 FIBA Oceania Basketball Tournament.

“You always think that’s the major goal (playing for Australia) every time you go into the gym or onto the court,” Emilija said.

“It’s just where you want to get to and I think it’s amazing to have that opportunity and the people around you to be able to do that, it’s such a privilege.”

Emilija’s love of basketball began at the Narre Magic Basketball Club as a seven-yearold and was strengthened through fiercely competitive games in the backyard with her siblings Marko, Danika and Ava, under the watchful eye of her step-father, Damien Mizzi.

Playing the role of floor-general, a lot is asked of her on the offensive end. But it’s her tenacity without the ball that stand-outs on the court, according to Mr Kinsman.

“She was the captain of the Vic Metro and she stood out with her elite capabilities, defensively in particular,” Mr Kinsman said.

“Her court coverage and her speed is elite, and that held her in good stead to be picked in this team.

“She’s a great distributor, great decision maker, knows how to get people the ball at the right time, and plays with the right tempo.”

Emilija likens her style of game to Australian and Brooklyn Nets point guard Patty Mills and Portland Trailblazers six-time NBA All-star Damian Lillard, while her Serbian background draws her eyes towards Denver Nuggets Serbian Superstar and back-to-back NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.

“I like the way they (Lillard and Mills) come off screens and their ability to create for other people,” she said.

“I like to play a quick but composed match; set up the plays, call the shots, and I love the defensive side of the game.”

Unsurprisingly, all three of those players listed are highly regarded leaders within their respective basketball programs.

No Aussie basketball fan will forget watching Mills lead the Boomers to their historic Bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, capped by a 42-point performance as they overcame Slovenia to clinch their first Olympic medal.

Steering the ship as her team’s primary ballhandler, she said she admires Jokic’s approach to supporting his teammates.

“I think your team has to be like your family, you have each other’s back all the time and I think that’s what he does very well.”

It’s her attitude towards the game that has Mr Kinsman seeing her enjoying a long and successful career on the hardwood.

“Emelija’s really well grounded and mature for her age and I think that leadership comes through when she plays that position on the court, which is really critical.

“She has a lot of empathy for people and that comes out in that point guard position, because you’re that controlling player on the floor, distributing the ball and organising the group. I think to feed off your point guard, you need a good relationship with each other.

“She definitely has the maturity, mindset and the work ethic needed.”

Regardless of her achievements later in her career, the Dakic name will go down in folklore at the Cavs, as she has become the first Casey Basketball Association representative to be selected for the national team.

While her fierce loyalty to the Cavs will remain, she has her sights set on a professional career overseas.

“I want to see how far I can go, and keep taking things as they come.

“Basketball teaches you a life lesson for 40

minutes. You can go from being frustrated, to happy, to sad, to having to make decisions and it just brings everyone together, this one game.”

Kids in for a fright

By Marcus Uhe Halloween enthusiast Brooke McGowan-Grills is in readiness for the big day with her front garden display coming to fruition once again.

The theme of this year’s display is Lego, with Ms McGowan-Grills taking a different path from her ‘Goosebumps’ inspired arrangement in 2021.

Among the creations ahead of 31 October are a giant pumpkin, a six-foot high scarecrow overlooking the pumpkin patch and a giant spider with piercing red eyes.

It’s the culmination of four months of work, the exhibit’s curator said.

“I love it,” Ms McGowan-Grills said.

“I’ll be inside and I can hear kids giggling and squeaking, ringing the little door bells. I want the kids to run around and touch things.

I want it to be interactive and to be enjoyed.”

With the display all but complete and the outfit settled, all that’s left is the final – and arguably most important – aspect of the big day: the lollybags, for those brave enough to trickor-treat.

In their ruling, VCAT deputy president Teresa Bisucci and senior member Ian Potts accepted that SBI would suffer “serious financial impacts” including the loss of employees if the stay was not granted. The financial implications would raise issues with the future viability of the applicant, they found.

SBI is still subject to a number of improvement notices regarding leachate management and stormwater management, and an audit of their landfill operations. The VCAT panel determined that these improvement notices and the “active management with oversight” provided by the EPA would provide low risks of fire and adverse odours.

In opposing the stay, the EPA argued there was significant public interest in protection of the amenity of the community around the licensed premises.

This was a case where community safety outweighed any risk of prejudice to the applicant, the EPA submitted.

SBI argued that a failure to grant a stay of the suspension would render the merits proceeding futile as the merits proceeding could not be listed for hearing before the end of the suspension period of four months. This appeared to be accepted by the EPA, however, it argued the stay may be refused due to the element of community safety and the need to protect the public.

Bike ‘superhighways’ call

By Marcus Uhe Greens Upper House candidate for South-East Metropolitan Alex Breskin used last week’s Metropolitan Transport Forum held at Bunjil Place to put forward his vision for an environmentally-friendly transport network in the South East.

Coinciding with National Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 19 October, Mr Breskin announced plans for the party’s Big Bike Build, which will see $2.5 billion invested in hundreds of kilometres of safe and separated bike ‘superhighways’ across the state, if the Greens win government at the upcoming election.

It was one of four solutions he put forward on the night to combat rising numbers of emissions caused by cars and trucks on the roads, in the hopes that cycling would provide a valid alternative to driving.

“Transport is victoria’s biggest growing source of carbon emissions,” Mr Breskin said.

“We in the South East suburbs are in a major growth corridor for Greater Melbourne and no council is bearing that brunt more than the City of Casey.

“There are some serious challenges we need to address, so I come her with a very clear message for the council on transport.

“To tackle the climate crisis, Victoria needs to rapidly cut emissions from the transport sector, and at the heart of our transport policies.

“The State Government needs to support people to make that shift out of polluting petrol vehicles and into cleaner, cheaper climatefriendly forms of transport.”

Along with the funding for bike paths, Mr Breskin suggested an upgrade of the current public transport network, a push for more electric vehicles and a clean transport action plan, that would set “mandated targets” for emissions reduction targets.

Alex Breskin wants to see more bike paths, electric vehicles and an upgraded public transport system.

“Without (a clean transport action plan), we’re seeing billions spent on transport projects, which means 200 kilometres of new widened freeways that are going to lock in more carbon pollution, put thousands more cars into our suburbs, and that is simply not compatible with dealing with the climate crisis.”

In contrast, Liberals have commmitted $10 billion to improving Victoria’s roads over 10 years and $175 million to the upgrade of

Berwick-Cranbourne Road, which was announced by Gembrook MP Brad Battin at the forum.

He did, however, commend the council’s advocacy for the Clyde Rail extension, which the Liberals committed to completing, if they win government.

The Labor Party completed an upgrade of the Cranbourne line in February 2022 and continue to forge ahead with their level cross-

ing removal project, with plans to make the Pakenham line level-crossing free by 2025.

The forum was attended by Mr Breskin, Mr Battin and Labor South-East Metropolitan candidate Michael Galea. Each representative was given six minutes to address their party’s stance on the topic before fielding questions from the audience.

‘Well past time for change’: Greens candidate Moore

Seagulls flying high A re-elected Labor Government will invest $2.15 million to upgrade the Tooradin Recreation Reserve.

The funding will be put towards the development of the pavilion and the delivery of a skate park.

The reserve is the home of Tooradin Dalmore Football Club, who claimed this year’s West Gippsland Football and Netball League

premiership for the first time in 25 years, and Tooradin Cricket Club.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said the government is backing local sporting clubs.

“As a parent of two children, I know we want to all see our kids active and engaged,” Ms Crugnale said.

“Sports clubs are the heart of our local community.”

Affordable housing, climate action and integrity in government are forming the backbone of Greens candidate Susanna Moore’s decision to stand for the seat of Narre Warren South.

The single mother of two has called the South East home for the last decade, and acutely understands the cost of living pressures endured by the community.

Under a Greens government, she has pledged to end “out-of-control” rent rises, replace coal and gas power sources with 100 per cent renewable energy by 2030, and hold the major parties to account. She feels she can represent the people of her constituency more accurately without being influenced by corporate stakeholders.

“I want to ensure that local families have access to affordable housing,” Ms Moore said.

“I’d love to be able to make a difference to people’s lives by offering them an improved standard of living, more affordable housing, and cheaper energy, education and transport.

“Instead of looking after people, Labor and the Liberals give special treatment to big corporate interests, like gas corporations and property developers.”

No stranger to the Greens, Ms Moore says she has been heavily involved in policy development at a local level with a focus on protecting “invaluable” green wedges throughout the community.

“The Covid-19 pandemic showed us we can’t live without these outdoor areas for recreation and wellbeing, as well as to protect and improve biodiversity,” she said.

Refugee’s road to safety

“We had no option but to leave, no matter how difficult it was. Life under the Taliban was impossible for us. As a woman I had no rights, I could not even go out shopping or do anything,” Ms Amina said.

Her story’s happy denouement came two weeks ago when the family arrived in Australia and was reunited in emotional scenes in Melbourne after 12 long, painful years.

Their names have been changed to protect their identities over safety concerns for loved ones still in Afghanistan.

Amina’s son, Hussain, 19, said he and his sisters are desperate to start school.

He recalled how they missed out on school in Afghanistan.

“Many times we were told not to go to school. Most of the students were Hazara so it was a target and also it taught English. I was learning English because I was hoping to go to

Australia,” he said.

The family is looking forward to a better future and education for their children and contributing to the Australian society.

“I have been away from my family for 12 years and now we are reunited and will remain so and build a new life together,” Baqir said.

That’s one of the many reunion stories of refugees here in Australia.

The book also celebrates the achievements of refugees, the hopes for the future and recognises the contribution of refugees to Australian society.

Refugees like Mustafa Ayobi and Barat Ali Batoor make a real contribution to the Australian society and its future.

Mr Ayobi fled his homeland, Afghanistan with his family and arrived in Australia in 2008.

He’s an example of the thousands of refugees

Heart-wrenching and inspirational stories of refugees are told in a compelling book ‘Refugee Stories: In their own words,’ by Laurie Nowell.

The book includes hair-raising stories of refugee struggles, journeys of people who had to leave behind everything they had built throughout their lives and flee their country, and it reveals hopes and dreams for their future.

A journalist and a writer for 25 years, Mr Nowell said: “Many of the refugees who settle in Australia have experienced trauma, torture or the loss of loved ones. They bring with them memories, traditions, culture and history.

“They also bring with them hopes, dreams and ambitions for their children.

“They are, by definition, resilient and ingenious people who have overcome challenges and dangers just to get here.”

Amina’s story is just one of many.

After the takeover of the capital of Kabul, the world watched in disbelief as thousands of Afghans rushed to the city’s airport, most of them without any documents, in a desperate attempt to escape life under the Taliban rule. Amina and her three children were among them.

Like many, the family survived suicide bombing attacks, tear gas bombardment and human stampedes to make it to the safety of the airport terminal.

“It was very disheartening and difficult when the Taliban took over, everything fell apart very quickly,” Amina said.

“Everything we had hoped and dream of vanished. The Taliban were going door to door looking for people who had worked for western governments or military, and people with ties overseas.”

Amina showed documents that her husband Baqir was living in Australia as a citizen, and was able to get her family onto a military flight to freedom without an update from their visa application.

It took Mr Ayobi 12 tough years to make his dream of being an electrical engineer come true.

Being the first person to attend University, Mr Ayobi graduated from La Trobe University and just four weeks ago landed himself a job with Melbourne’s Metro Trains to design and build electrical substations in what he calls his “dream job”.

“I wanted to become an engineer to help make things better and be part of the country’s future development, especially in technological aspects,” Mr Ayobi said.

He’s married with two children and loves his job despite the 50km drive from Noble Park to West Sunshine.

Barat Ali Batoor is a professional freelance photographer from Afghanistan and a former refugee. He made his way to Australia by boat and arrived in 2013 and has been making a living for himself here in Australia as the program coordinator at Asylum Seeker Resource Centre.

The Afghan filmmaker and photojournalist also won the 2013 ‘Photo of the Year’ in the prestigious Nikon-Walkley Press Photography awards for his still image taken on the voyage from Indonesia to Australia.

“I’m pleased to have been able to show the real story behind these journeys – to show how people are risking their lives and enduring perils to escape persecution and the threat of death in their home countries,” Mr Batoor said.

Mr Nowell, the book’s author, has long worked as a media adviser with refugee settlement agency AMES Australia.

AMES chief executive Cath Scarth said the book was a reminder of the contributions refugees made to Australia.

“Refugees bring with them resilience, optimism and a deep work ethic. Australia is fortunate to have people with these qualities,” Ms Scarth said.

Go purple to help beat brain cancer

By Eleanor Wilson The Casey community is invited to paint Berwick Springs Lake purple next month, with the Berwick Walk4BrainCancer.

Berwick Business Group president Magda Dabaco said she decided to organise the walk after brain cancer impacted her family.

“Unfortunately, my mother has recently been diagnosed with brain cancer.

“It is one of the rarer cancers, but I noticed that when it happens to you, you started hearing about other locals that are also suffering.

“So after Mum was diagnosed I started hearing about people in Clyde and Narre Warren and Berwick who were also diagnosed with the disease.”

The five kilometre walk will be hosted by the Berwick and Narre Warren Business Groups, who have set an ambitious fundraising goal of $10,000.

So far the group has raised almost $1400.

“We decided as a business to try and get the community and the traders together to host a really big walk and chose Walk4BrainCancer to raise awareness and money to help try to find a cure,” Ms Dabaco said.

“I don’t want anyone to have to go through what my family has been through, so it would be great to put some money towards finding a cure.”

Current statistics show just one in five people with brain cancer survive longer than five years.

Liberals’ $150,000 pledge Hallam’s Nathdwara centre is the latest community centre to receive a funding pledge from the Liberals and Nationals ahead of the State Election.

On Monday 17 October, the LNP announced it would provide $150,000 towards upgrades for the centre if elected.

The Nathdwara Centre has over 400 members, and more than 2500 people who attend the centre on holy days.

In addition to being a place of worship and cultural education, the centre provides free food to those in need, including pensioners in the area.

The upgrades will allow the Nathdwara Centre to expand its shelter and increase its current ability to provide food relief to the wider community.

Gembrook MP and Liberal candidate for Berwick, Brad Battin said the centre provides a crucial role in the community and this commitment recognised that.

“The Liberals and Nationals acknowledge the critical role the Nathdwara Centre offers and we’re proud to be able to support that.”

Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North, Timothy Dragan, said it was a meaningful announcement that would deliver widespread benefits for the Nathdwara Centre and the wider community.

Top award for Botanic Park

By Eleanor Wilson Greens Upper House candidate for South-East Metropolitan Alex Breskin used last week’s Metropolitan Transport Forum held at Bunjil Place to put forward his vision for an environmentally-friendly transport network in the South East.

Coinciding with National Ride to Work Day on Wednesday 19 October, Mr Breskin announced plans for the party’s Big Bike Build, which will see $2.5 billion invested in hundreds of kilometres of safe and separated bike ‘superhighways’ across the state, if the Greens win government at the upcoming election.

It was one of four solutions he put forward on the night to combat rising numbers of emissions caused by cars and trucks on the roads, in the hopes that cycling would provide a valid alternative to driving.

“Transport is victoria’s biggest growing source of carbon emissions,” Mr Breskin said.

“We in the South East suburbs are in a major growth corridor for Greater Melbourne and no council is bearing that brunt more than the City of Casey.

“There are some serious challenges we need to address, so I come her with a very clear message for the council on transport.

“To tackle the climate crisis, Victoria needs to rapidly cut emissions from the transport sector, and at the heart of our transport policies.

“The State Government needs to support people to make that shift out of polluting petrol vehicles and into cleaner, cheaper climatefriendly forms of transport.”

Along with the funding for bike paths, Mr Breskin suggested an upgrade of the current public transport network, a push for more electric vehicles and a clean transport action plan, that would set “mandated targets” for emissions reduction targets.

Wilson Botanic Park Berwick was awarded National Park of the Year for its revitalisation during Covid.

“Without (a clean transport action plan), we’re seeing billions spent on transport projects, which means 200 kilometres of new widened freeways that are going to lock in more carbon pollution, put thousands more cars into our suburbs, and that is simply not compatible with dealing with the climate crisis.”

In contrast, Liberals have commmitted $10 billion to improving Victoria’s roads over 10 years and $175 million to the upgrade of

Berwick-Cranbourne Road, which was announced by Gembrook MP Brad Battin at the forum.

He did, however, commend the council’s advocacy for the Clyde Rail extension, which the Liberals committed to completing, if they win government.

Artists celebrate 30 years

By Eleanor Wilson On 28 September, members of the Berwick Artists Society gathered to celebrate 30 years of its artistic engagement and making an impact in the Berwick Community.

One of the foundling members, Tony Purcell was there to reminisce and celebrate.

Berwick Artists Society president Rosemary Stayner said the benefits of the society stretch beyond flexing their creative muscles.

“We have a group of about 30 members that regularly comes on a Thursday to paint and what I think is most satisfactory is the painting is a vehicle for everyone to get together,” she said.

“The painting is something everyone has in common, but we also chatter and laugh and I think it’s good to have that sort of thing, it’s good for the soul.”

The society offers members the opportunity to grow as an artist, to be inspired by other

artists and demonstrators and to have their artworks displayed in public venues.

Over her time in the group, Mrs Stayner said she had seen great improvement in the members’ art.

“We’ve all definitely improved and so has our confidence, because we all help each other out and give each other tips,” she said.

The Berwick Artists Society meets at the Old Cheese Factory each Thursday from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

All ages and capabilities are welcome.

Smiling can trigger the release of endorphins: Study when the positioning of one’s facial muscles feeds information to the brain and chemicals are released accordingly.

Running until Friday October 30, there’s a variety of events across Cardinia and surrounds to recognise the fabulous talents of local children, nurture their developing minds and better support them in our community.

Cardinia Council will be hosting an event at the ParentZone Hub, 75 Army Road, Pakenham on Friday, October 28 from 3pm to 5pm.

The event, in collaboration with Angilcare Victoria, is free and for children aged 12 and under to come along with their families. The afternoon includes a bundle of fun activities including arts and crafts, face painting, sausage sizzle and much more.

The team at Cockatoo Community House is offering free, immersive dance and creative expression classes for children aged 6 to 12.

Children will be encouraged to experiment with creative movement and creation by making a piece of art or their own dance routine.

Classes will run on October 26 and 27 between 4pm and 6pm. Bookings for this event are essential. The event will take place at 23 Bailey Road, Cockatoo.

This year’s theme is “Children have the right to a standard of living that supports their wellbeing and healthy development”, which comes from the United Nations Convention on the rights of the child. Highlighting the importance of ensuring every child has the best opportunity to excel in life.

CRANBOURNE - THROUGH THE YEARS

Celebrating 100 years The St. Peter’s College Chapel was originally the mass centre of the Catholic Church of Tooradin.

The Archbishop of Melbourne, Daniel Mannix blessed St. Peter’s Church on Sunday 3 December, 1922 and it remained the centre for mass for some 80 years, hosting thousands of liturgies, as well as baptisms, weddings, funerals and other sacramental celebrations during this time.

By 2002, the worshipping community of Tooradin had diminished in size and the declining number of vocations to the priesthood meant that the Diocese of Sale could no longer appoint a Priest to minister to the small Tooradin community. As such, the building became redundant.

The Tooradin Catholic Community did not want to see their Church just fall into disrepair or, even worse, decay and be neglected. So in 2002, they invited Mr. Terry Feely, the College Principal of St. Peter’s College to meet with them, and they offered him the building for use as a school Chapel.

He was immediately taken with the building as it was dedicated to St. Peter, the patron of our College.

He was particularly pleased with the symbolism within the building, especially the stained glass windows which not only contain Petrine symbols such as the Keys to the Kingdom and the symbol of Peter’s martyrdom - an upside down cross, but also the colours used in the windows were the same as the St. Peter’s College colours: maroon and gold.

The side windows and the exterior of the building also echo the grey that is part of the St. Peter’s College badge. The large statue of St. Peter that has pride of place in the foyer was also an attractive asset of the building. Con-

The building was moved, via the South Gippsland Highway on the back of two trucks and it was delivered to the Cranbourne Campus in February 2003. It was re-dedicated by Fr. Andrew Wise on 14 September, 2003. Today,

the building is commonly referred to as the St. Peter’s Chapel and is used regularly for House Feast Days, ‘Chapel masses’, Year 7 Orientation sessions, RE classes, lunchtime prayer and other special events such as the recent visit of our Bishop of Sale, Greg Bennet (who sends his best wishes today, as he was unable to attend in person).

On Tuesday 11 October, 2022, members of the community of St. Peter’s College, Priests and dignitaries gathered in the Chapel at St. Peter’s College Cranbourne Campus in thanksgiving and celebration to commemorate our Chapel’s centenary, and all that it has been over the past 100 years to the Tooradin and Cranbourne communities.

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

Ernie reclaims his culture

By Sahar Foladi Ernie Rijs, teacher at St Peter’s College Clyde campus, published his first novel, The Crossing, in September.

Coming from migrant Dutch parents who fled their country in the ‘50s after the Second World War for a better future, Mr Rijs, eldest of nine siblings, paved the way just for that.

“They wanted us to have a good future, they wanted us to have a good time. But at the same time, it meant that I lost some of my Dutch culture,” he said.

One of the characters in Mr Rijs’ novel is South Sudanese, which adds a fascinating twist to the whole concept of the story.

His narrative was also derived from his own personal experience as a Hollander. Mr Rijs went back to visit his country after 30 years to reclaim his culture and all that his parents had shared with him about their home country.

“Trying to reclaim who you are is a key part in the story,” he said.

Working in a school environment and meeting different people and students from all walks of life, Mr Rijs has seen adults and students alike make decisions without thinking of consequences, thus the motivation to write.

However, the thought of writing a novel wasn’t always front of mind for Mr Rijs.

“I just wanted to achieve writing something,” he said. But that determination alone did not drive him. Mr Rijs started to encounter students from refugee backgrounds, which changed the entire plot.

“It wasn’t until I arrived in a school in Tarneit, west of Melbourne, where I came in contact with more and more South Sudanese young people, some of them from refugee backgrounds - not all of them,” he said.

“I got inspiration to include a South Sudanese character in the book from a couple of South Sudanese men that I was teaching while

I was there who had really harrowing but interesting stories,” he said.

Mr Rijs has been teaching for 45 years, and has taught a variety of subjects including Hu-

manities, Geography, and Psychology and is teaching English and English Language.

He is working on his second novel with the working title being ‘Coal’ and will also start

work to the sequel of The Crossing next year.

“I had an overall idea, but the story told itself - these people that I got to know, they told the story,” he said.

How to price your product TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH One of the issues that I see businesses struggle with is how to price their products or services.

Charge too much and you run the risk of being seen as gouging or ripping customers off and price too low, customers may ask ‘where’s the catch?’ or ‘what short-cuts have been taken?’. Pricing is indeed a highly sensitive topic and getting it wrong can literally cost your business thousands, but in their book ‘The Discipline of Market Leaders’, Michael Treacy and Fred Wiersema give some insights as to how to think about this.

According to the authors, a business can be associated with only one of three different categories: 1. Product Leadership.

2. Customer Intimacy.

3. Operational Excellence.

At first sight it may be tempting to think that your business is in two of these or perhaps even all three!

However, in reality, no business can really be in more than one category without confusing its customers and itself about where it belongs and where its primary focus should be.

The definitions of each category shed some light on this, so let’s just focus on products; although, the same holds true for services.

If you are a product leader, then you are one of the best in class and you charge accordingly.

You are highly innovative, typically unique and invest heavily all of which are expensive and so you charge accordingly.

Are you charging your customers the correct amount for your products?

You are the business people go to if they want the best and don’t mind paying for it.

If you focus on customer intimacy, then ensuring the customer gets what they want is your primary objective.

You don’t claim to have the best products, but you offer value for money and are willing to be very flexible in order to satisfy customer needs.

Businesses in this category really care about looking after their customers and building great relationships so that the customers keep coming back.

You are not the cheapest but neither are your products high price.

Those businesses in the ‘operational excellence’ space typically offer the cheapest products.

This does not necessarily mean poor qual-

ity, but their focus is on volume and achieving margins through great efficiencies in their production.

Highly systemised with predictable and reliable results, these businesses rely on sound processes and practices to ensure that higher demand can be met and attract through lower prices.

To illustrate the point, let’s take the example of furniture stores. Stores that fit into the ‘product leadership’ category might include James Said, Cocolea and Gainsville furniture.

These companies have unique furniture that are unashamedly expensive and buyers from these stores want the best.

Stores that fit the ‘customer intimacy’ space might include Harvey Norman and Focus on Furniture.

Their approach is highly customer-centric,

and they will often use ‘special offers’ to attract people in.

Operational excellence stores may well include companies like Amart and Fantastic Furniture.

Although they will indeed have sales, their prices are universally low so no need for big sales events.

It is important to note that there is nothing wrong or especially right about being in any particular one of these categories.

However, knowing where your primary focus is as a business will really help sharpen your marketing, enable you to attract the right kind of customers for your business and determine how your company needs to be run operationally for best results.

A ceremony was conducted to mark the centenary of the Cranbourne Freemasons Lodge on Saturday 15 October, founded in October 1921, followed by the installation of a new Worshipful Master.

This cannot be compared to a ‘change-over’ dinner function, which some communitybased organisations have.

An extensive ceremony was performed, followed by a banquet at Amberlee Receptions.

The ceremonies were conducted as ‘open’ which meant members of the public were in attendance, enabling them to see for themselves some of the ceremonial aspects of Freemasonry.

The Ceremony of Re-consecration was conducted by a Past Grand Master of Victorian Freemasonry, accompanied by his team of Grand Officers, who came from all parts of Victoria.

The Installation of the new Worshipful Master, Maurice Carter, was carried out by the Senior Grand Warden (the term ‘Worshipful’ is used by Freemasons as a mark of respect for merit, and has no religious connotations whatsoever).

Although ceremonial activity is a very important part of Freemasonry, it is only a small part of being a Freemason.

For example, Freemasons are active in charitable causes, and over the past few years have raised funds for the Royal Freemasons Homes, the Freemasons Hospital, the Royal Children’s Hospital Easter appeal, the Royal Flying Doctor’s Service, along with donating scholarships to the Cranbourne Secondary College and special wheelchairs to children with physical disabilities.

Freemasons admit good men and good men only, irrespective of race, colour or creed and strive to improve them.

Hasty Harla’s in a hurry

By David Nagel Power-packed Harla Sinclair is simply a rocket on two wheels who loves nothing better than putting her head down and riding fast.

The eight-year-old Pearcedale Primary School student showed her practice and training sessions are improving her power and skills after blowing away her rivals to win the recent Victorian BMX Championships.

More than 600 riders converged on Bendigo for the AusCycling BMX State Championships earlier this month, a pre-cursor to the National Championships to be held in Launceston in November.

And Harla has earned a trip to Tasmania after using her extremely fast-start to dominate the Girls-8 category in Bendigo.

Harla won all three heats, before putting an early gap on her rivals in the final…casting aside some early nerves and self-doubts to race away for an impressive victory.

Harla, who calls Frankston her home track but also rides out of Casey, has been honing her craft since she could barely walk.

She started by riding ‘Striders’, a balancebike for toddlers with no pedals.

“I started riding when I was two because my brother (Hudson) was riding BMX and I wanted to do it too,” Harla said.

“When you go around the corners it’s a bit scary, because of the concrete, but when you’re on the dirt part of the track it’s really fun.

“I like lots of things about BMX, I like going fast and I like that there are lots of people that know me.

“Riding BMX makes me feel really happy and excited.”

Harla has been practising and training hard

and working on her skills with her coach Bella May, an elite-level BMX rider herself who has recently competed in the US. “I practice a lot and then I train with my coach once a week,” Harla said excitedly.

“It’s more about technique, how I pump, how my pedals are on the start gate, how I sit, my position on the track, staying on the inside and not getting passed, all of that type of stuff.

“We do races, where I have to try and catch her, it’s lots of fun.”

Harla was excited before her races, but a bout of nerves at the starting gate gave her the biggest adrenaline rush of her blossoming young career.

“I was really, really nervous at the start and when I got on the gate my whole body was shaking,” she said giggling.

“But when I got off the gate I was like, wow, I can do this.

“The whole crowd was screaming and that gave me even more power.

“I’m really excited because I had to finish top eight in my group to be invited to go to Tasmania.

“I’ve never seen dad (Mick) cry before, but they were happy tears.”

Harla explained that her hard work practising at the starting gates had provided her with a big advantage.

“I’ve practised on those gates before, like the ones at Bendigo, some gates just go straight down but these ones you start off flat then go down,” she said.

“I pedal down the gates, where some of the girls in my age-group didn’t do that.”

And Harla doesn’t have to look far for inspiration, with her coach Bella May riding a similar path to stardom from a young age.

The young pocket-rocket looks the part too, having her helmet specially designed by a family friend.

She will certainly look the part when mum (Kristy) and dad join her for the trip to Launceston, where a place in the world championships in Scotland next year goes up for grabs.

“I need to finish top-eight in nationals to get invited, but I’m going to try and get top three,” Harla said confidently.

“The girls in my group, I’m not afraid of them, but I’ll be racing girls from all over Australia and I haven’t met any of those girls yet… so I don’t know how good they might be.”

Uncle Bryn unleashes burst in Sale Cup domination

By David Nagel Cranbourne trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young will head to Sydney with their five-year-old gelding Uncle Bryn after the talented import produced a demolition job in Sunday’s $200,000 Listed Sale Cup (1600m).

Ridden patiently by Daniel Moor, Uncle Bryn unleashed a withering burst at the 200-metre mark to stroll clear of a high-quality field to win by two-and-half-lengths on the line.

The son of Sea The Stars/Wall of Sound will now head north to compete in ‘The Five Diamonds’, a $2million, 1800-metre feature, for five-year-olds, to be run at Rosehill Gardens on 5 November.

Uncle Bryn was having his fifth start this preparation, in his second prep for the Busuttin/Young camp after having three runs earlier this year.

The UK-import last raced at Newmarket in England in September last year, before having his first Australian start at Sandown in a BenchMark-78 in March. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Uncle Bryn then had his second start at Sale, where he showed glimpses of his talent with a dominant performance in the rich $150,000 Up and Comers Handicap (1717m) on Good Friday.

He was spelled a short-time later, before beginning his second campaign with a solid sixth, beaten less than three lengths by Cox Plate contender Mr Brightside in the Group-2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m).

Uncle Bryn then ran second at The Valley, before running second to Smokin’ Romans in the Group-3 MRC Foundation Cup (2000m), beating home Gold Trip and Geelong Cup winner Emissary.

Uncle Bryn’s last start was an abject failure behind Tuvalu in the $1m Group-1 Toorak Handicap (1600m) at Caulfield.

“Obviously we’ve thrown him in the deep end and we think he’s up to that grade, but he just went terrible (in the Toorak) last start and we just couldn’t find any reason why,” Busuttin said after the Sale Cup victory.

“The only thing to do was press on, we thought we’d just drop him back a peg and

try and get some confidence into him.

“We thought if we turned up he’s probably better than them, but it’s never that easy, but it worked out today.

“I’ve still got full belief in him, he just got beat in the Naturalism, which swerved our path because we were heading to a Caulfield Cup. “He probably just gets on the steel a bit much to get over a bit of ground, and he just went terrible last start, which dented things, but everyone’s allowed a bad day and thankfully he bounced back today.”

Busuttin confirmed a trip across the border was now top priority.

“There’s a nice race in Sydney worth a couple of million dollars, that’s reserved for five-year-olds, so I think we’ll be up in Sydney next start,” he said with a wry smile.

Moor said Uncle Bryn was a completely different proposition to the one he encountered at Caulfield.

“He was in a foul mood at Caulfield, he was grumpy and wanted to get on with it and pull, but today he was perfect,” Moor

said post-race.

“He was in a better mood today and it showed.

“I was really disappointed that things didn’t pan out for him in the Toorak, because we went to that race off the back off the Smokin Romans form, but he was just really below par.

“He’s shown glimpses of really nice ability.

“Today he put away a handy field in the space of three strides and when he won here on Good Friday it was an exceptional win, he came from well back and I was really impressed with the way he won then.

“We saw something similar today.

“If he stays sound and in good order, and in a good frame of mind, a very good race is well within his keeping.”

The Busuttin-Young team trained the quinella in the Sale Cup, with Flash Aah returning to something like his best form in second place.

Flash Aah will now likely head to the $500,000 Ladbrokes Cranbourne Cup (1600m) on Saturday 12 November.

Weather causing havoc

By Jonty Ralphsmith The Dandenong District Cricket Association (DDCA) put the make-up of the season’s fixture to a president’s vote on Tuesday.

Inclement weather has so far prevented any turf cricket from being played this season and the weather forecast for Saturday again looks gloomy.

Clubs were asked to choose between keeping the season as is, with that option leaving no room for back up days or flexibility if there are more washouts; or play a full 14-game oneday home and away fixture starting on 5 November.

With a maximum of 20 weeks of cricket remaining in the season, the concept would allow a full 14 round home and away season, plus two weeks of finals with five weeks up their sleeves if weather issues persist.

The mood among turf two and three clubs on Monday was mixed: there was much excitement about getting the creams back on in preseason, but some clubs suggested the proposal ahead of the DDCA email, noting that only a full home-and-away fixture would preserve the fairness and integrity of the competition.

“I think they should scrap the fixture and go to a one-day fixture,” one coach said on Monday, a view corroborated by multiple clubs.

Other clubs were more sceptical, with one president noting that once one starts trying to manipulate a fair fixture is when you generally encounter trouble.

Sources within some teams said they had already shifted back to more of a one-day focus.

It appears that more turf two and three clubs will favour a full one-day fixture, but it is unknown whether the DDCA would be willing for the different turf competitions to have different fixtures if the preferences vary.

Never have local cricketers been so free to enjoy the spring racing carnival and if, as expected, there is no cricket this weekend, the first ball of men’s DDCA turf competitions would clash with the final day of the official carnival.

Cranbourne player-coach Mick Sweeney has learned the hard way to be careful what you wish for.

Many local voices would have echoed him when he said that he was craving a full preseason in 2022/23 after the pandemic has interrupted the last two.

“I addressed the group last Thursday in regards to the mental challenge,” Sweeney said.

“We don’t train to train, we train to play and unfortunately we’re not getting the payoff.

“We train to win, to sing the song, to spend time with your mates and all the good things that come about.

“I commented on personally finding it hard because you put so much time and preparation and effort to getting the season up and going and you’re excited to get it started and it is an anticlimax at the moment.”

“Everyone’s frustrated,” said Berwick Springs president Russell Collier through wry laughter.

“We’re coming in expecting we’re going to play, trying to keep our training up and be prepared for a weekend and come in mentally ready on Saturday so when we do start, we’re ready.

“I think a concern is that once we do kick off the season, because we have had so many false starts that you’re not switched on so we want to stay ready.

Another issue of the month-long cricket absence that was highlighted was the reduced revenue for the clubs.

Each washout is another usually steady source of income lost, as stubbies aren’t being cracked open in the clubroom post-game.

The silver-lining for some footballer-dominant clubs has been that there is a greater break between seasons, ensuring all players are switched on for cricket before starting.

At the time of publication, the outcome of the vote is unknown.

Compounding frustrations for the Eagles is that they would have played some cricket if there was not a blanket call to abandon all matches, as their Casey ground has been ready to play on.

Getting away from the monotony of weekly training sessions is a route that several clubs have taken.

Anticipating another washout, one club has already sought to organise a gathering with players to keep the squad together, while Parkfield raised $300 for Beyond Blue at a function after training last week.

The situation could therefore galvanise clubs with a stronger culture as they could savour their time together and translate their tightness on-field.

While frustrated, Berwick Springs has relished the lengthened preseason, as it has given them time to prepare for the new challenge of turf three cricket, after winning the turf four premiership last season.

After last weekend’s action was called off for Berwick Springs, it organised an unofficial scratch match against Berwick Strikers on synthetic, among the measures clubs are taking to give players competition.

Corrigan departs Casey

By Jonty Ralphsmith Casey premiership coach Mark Corrigan has departed the club to take on the role as Geelong’s VFL coach.

Geelong announced his arrival last week, with Corrigan accepting the role at the club he represented throughout his playing career to be closer to family.

Corrigan, colloquially known as ‘Harry’, this season took the Demons to their first premiership since 1999, winning the grand final by 32 points in soggy conditions against Southport.

Casey has been the clear pace-setter in the state league, winning 20 of 21 matches, the only loss coming to preliminary finalists Brisbane in the last round of the home and away season.

Captain Mitch White highlighted the strong system that Corrigan put in place and how it allowed the squad to flourish.

“He put a lot of trust in players like myself and Jimmy to go about our stuff, but when implementing messages about what we needed to focus on, we collaborated so we got the right messages across instead of mixed messages so it was just a mutually respectful relationship,” White said.

“He provides a great platform and puts trust in the program – here’s what we’re going to give you but it is up to you to make the most of it and if you want to get better, you’ve got the tools, so you have to be happy to use them.”

Several mechanisms were also put in place

to nourish relationships between AFL and VFL-listed players, something Corrigan emphasised during his tenure.

White added that it was a discussion he had in a 2021 exit meeting with Corrigan which catalysed his move to the midfield in 2022, a position he thrived in, being named in the VFL Team of the Year and winning Casey’s best and fairest.

“He saw a bit of growth in my game and ability to use some of the attributes I had more often, which you get playing midfield with the contested ball and ability to win one on one contests,” White said.

“He saw that potential and it got thrown up to get a bit fitter and we’ll see how we go because we knew I had forward to fall back on if it didn’t work.”

Strong start for a rampant Cranbourne CRANBOURNE BOWLS Cranbourne’s number-one side continued its winning streak by defeating Berwick away while side two had a good win at home and side four had a massive win away.

Club chief Tony Collins was happy with the results as he gave out the match report back at the club room after returning home from Berwick.

SATURDAY PENNANT – ROUND 2 Side 1: Division 2 Sec 8 Cranbourne was confident from the start against Berwick but it had to fight to the end to eventually win by nine shots and took away 15 valuable points which now places them high on the ladder with two wins out of two.

The team of Gwen Scott, John Stanley, Tony Collins and skip Shane Jakins won by 10 shots which was the difference between the two sides.

Once again in the excitement of the day Joe ‘Rowdy’ Byrne left half of his bowling equipment at Berwick club and had to send out a SOS to retrieve it.

Cranbourne 83 (15 points) defeated Berwick 74 (3 points) Side 2: Division 3 Sec 8 A win at home by 12 shots was a great result.

Skip Steve Hickson and his team of Vic Butera, Bill Bradbury and Bill Sherriff won by nine shots and team member Bill Bradbury was all praise for his skipper, claiming that Steve played his best game in three years.

The winning rink of the day was Chris Rea, John Keen, Gerry Dudink and Allen Skurrie who won by a massive 44 shots.

Cranbourne 143 (18 points) defeated Cranbourne RSL 52 (0 points) Side 5: Division 8 Sec 7 (12 a side) Club Legend and life member Stan Burnett and his team of Jeanne Tomlin, Roger Roscoe, and Bruce Harper won by four shots but the team still went down by nine shots.

Cranbourne 41 (2 points) lost to Churchill Waverley Golf 50 (14 points) Side 6: Division 8 Sec 6 (12 a side) Skip Sofio Raiti and his team of Monica Peers, Bruce Canavan and Olive Stanley won by six shots but unfortunately they could not bridge the gap.

Cranbourne 50(2 points) lost to South Oakleigh 66 (14 points) MID-WEEK PENNANT Side 1: Division 2 Sec 6 It was a strange day for the Cranbourne Midweek Pennant teams with the two away teams having a struggle but the two home teams had comfortable wins.

play indoors and for most of our players this was a first time experience.

Unfortunately they ran into a very talented Brighton team who knew their green very well and just outplayed our team.

Cranbourne 1 (39) 0 points, lost to Brighton 1 (92) Cranbourne (2) played Berwick (3) at Cranbourne on grass.

In a game played in great spirit, this contest saw Cranbourne win all three rinks and gain maximum points on the day.

Cranbourne 2 (66) 16 points, defeated Berwick 3 (45) Cranbourne (3) playing at home against Noble Park (2) also had a great encounter with their opponents, but got the chocolates winning by two rinks to one.

The sun again shone on the team of Frank Male, Sandra Mueller, Rob Sorensen and Skip Peter Colthup who rink won by 17 shots.

Cranbourne 3 (67) 14 points, defeated Noble Park 2 (48).

Cranbourne (4) played away at Churchill Waverley Golf (2) and battled hard, but one rink just couldn’t match their opponents.

Considering this team has many new bowlers and some with little bowling experience, their efforts were admirable.

They’ll be better for the experience.

The result doesn’t really show the overall picture.

Cranbourne-trained sprinter Bella Nipotina broke through for a well-deserved maiden Group-1 victory when claiming a comprehensive victory in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

The $2million feature over 1200m was scheduled for Friday night but was moved to the Saturday Cox Plate program after lightning saw the abandonment of the Friday card.

The five-year-old mare showed no ill-effects from the change, relishing the heavy conditions to score by almost five lengths.

“She didn’t quite muster all that well, but when they came off the fence she got a saloon run,” said co-trainer David Eustace.

“She so deserves this – the whole team has put so much into her.

“She’s so tough and it’s just great to reward the owners, they’re huge supporters of the stable and to reward them with a group 1 is very special.

“I can’t stress how much of a team result this is, it’s just really special.”

Bella Nipotina ran second in the same race in 2021 and had run in seven group 1 races since, never beaten more than 3.5 lengths.

It was her sixth career victory and has now earned connections over $3.2m in prize money.

She is the sixth group 1 winner produced out of the Cranbourne Training Centre in the three months of the current season, eclipsing the record five group 1 winners that called Cranbourne home during the 2021/22 season.

It was the highlight of a big weekend of racing for Cranbourne based trainers, with 11 trainers combining to win 14 races across five meetings including four at Moonee Valley as well as the Sale Cup on Sunday.

The spring carnival continues at Flemington on Saturday with Cranbourne trainers again set to be prominent with a number of leading chances in the group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
