“Our immediate priorities are to minimise disruption to students while they complete their studies at the school this year, and to support our staff and students as they seek alternative employment and education for 2023 and beyond. We are doing everything possible to assist and support them,” Mountain District Christian School board chair Gill Birkett said.

In a statement, the board said the school will continue to work closely with staff and families, offering counselling and support from their broader school networks.

The board also said the months remaining until the end of the 2022 school year will allow for smooth transitions.

“I’ve visited all the classes, talked to as many students as possible, and one of the interesting things was when one of the students got off the bus, he just came over and gave me a big hug; another Year 9 boy came and gave me a big hug as well,” Mr Riding said.

“The sense of community has been overwhelming in what’s been a very sad situation, and I think the community should be proud of the way in which they operate as a community... I think that’s one thing that’s probably going to be missed the most.”

Students at a Monbulk Prep to Year 12 school will be looking to find a new school next year, with the Mountain District Christian School board announcing the school’s closure on Monday 17 October.

Principal Jason Riding said a gradual decline of enrolments over the years led to the board’s decision to close the school’s doors at the end of the 2022 school year. Roughly 155 students are enrolled at Mountain District Christian School, with an approximate enrolment decline of five to 10 students yearly.

With the financial impact expected to hit the school around May or June 2023, Mr Rid-

ing said the school wanted to avoid an “unexpected closure” for staff, parents and students.

“It was significant enough that the issue was highlighted by our business manager and we had to make sure we addressed it appropriately,” Mr Riding said.

After external expert consultants ratified Mountain District School’s financial position, Mr Riding said he met with the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority, the Department of Education and Independent Schools Victoria to develop a list of alternative school opportunities for students, including a range of Christian schools, independent schools and nearby government schools in Olinda, Emerald, Monbulk, Cockatoo, Yarra

Local toilets a ‘disgrace’

By Tyler Wright One resident has expressed concerns over the state of public toilets in Monbulk, Belgrave and Belgrave Heights’ Birdsland Reserve, slamming the council-owned amenities as “embarrassing” and “disgusting”.

Monbulk local Leharna Black said she has reported the Monbulk public toilets to Yarra Ranges Council three times over three years, and said she has never seen anyone mop the floor of Monbulk toilets, wipe cobwebs off the walls, with the taps covered in “dirt and grime”.

“The toilet bowls don’t get cleaned, the floors don’t get cleaned, the walls don’t get cleaned,” Ms Black said.

Ms Black said the toilets stink of urine, with sanitary bins overflowing with rubbish and sanitary items, leaving the Monbulk, Belgrave and Birdsland toilets as a place of last resort.

“For older people, sometimes needing to go to the toilet can be an immediate thing [and] it’s not like they can choose to hold on,” Ms Black said.

“Having older members of their community forced to deal with that is pretty gross.”

Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Environment and Infrastructure, Bill Millard, said the council is aware of a number of complaints made in relation to the toilets in Monbulk, Birdsland Reserve and Belgrave, which have focused on a “short supply of toilet paper and lack of external waste bins”.

“Council recently installed secondary toilet paper dispensers in these toilets, and clean the toilets regularly during the week and both days of the weekend,” Mr Millard said.

“We plan on increasing cleaning services during the peak summer season for these, and

Ms Black raised question of whether it was Yarra Ranges Council, or the contractor’s, responsibility to clean the toilets - and to what extent they were obliged to do so.

Mr Millard confirmed an agreed scope of work has been established with a contractor through council inspection and contractor inspection programs, which includes the cleaning of “rubbish, paths, syringes, floors, walls and doors, toilet pans and hand basins, toilet bins and most importantly, reporting damage, vandalism and graffiti”.

“Yarra Ranges Council maintenance programs also support public toilet standards, this includes the support of the Council graffiti removal team,” Mr Millard said.

From Ms Black’s perspective, Yarra Ranges Council does not do what it needs to do, which is “organise to have those toilets properly cleaned”.

“They need to ensure that these toilets are properly cleaned once a week as well, not just turn up with toilet paper,” she said.

“They either need to employ a different party to do this, or they need to require the existing contractor to add this to their schedule.

But it can’t be left the way that it is.”

selected townships, with a Cardinia Shire Council spokesperson confirming the location of the back-up power systems and the technology options going to be used are yet to be determined, as well as the timing of the works.

In a study of 24 towns, the government identified 24 towns to install the energy hubs, and will now begin to work with energy providers, local governments and emergency services organisations to deliver the new energy solutions.

Ms D’Ambrosio said with climate change set to increase the frequency and intensity of storms and bushfires, the state government is “developing energy resilience solutions to protect Victorian communities during extreme weather events”.

“We’re delivering renewable energy solutions to communities across the state – securing energy supply, driving down power bills and slashing emissions to combat climate change and mitigate its impact on Victorians,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

Towns across the Yarra Ranges and Cardinia Shire are set to become home to new energy systems providing power to selected community hubs in the case of a widespread outage.

Healesville, Warburton, Kallista, Monbulk and Olinda have been named as locations for energy hubs, providing a place for residents to shower, heat food and charge their devices in the case of a widespread outage.

Minister for Energy Lily D’Ambrosio last week announced $7.5 million for crucial back-up power systems in 24 towns hit by major storms in 2021 – including batteries and rooftop solar on community buildings.

Yarra Ranges Council’s Director of Environment and Infrastructure Bill Millard said more than 3,000 homes were without power and internet for more than a month after the June 2021 storm event, with 34 communities losing internet service and unable to call triple-0 for assistance.

IN BRIEF Teen taken to hospital after car accident in Sassafras A man in his late teens has been taken to the Alfred Hospital in a stable condition after a car accident in Sassafras on Thursday 20 October.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene for serious but non-life threatening injuries just after 11:20pm on Basin-Olinda Road, before taking the man to hospital via air ambulance helicopter.

CFA crews from Kalorama, Olinda and Monbulk fire brigades worked to extricate the man from the vehicle.

Olinda Fire Brigade Captain Philip Skiller said it took over two hours for crews to complete the rescue, having to winch the vehicle out of the tree to access the man and use battery operated ‘Jaws of Life’ to secure the vehicle.

“This guy’s very lucky,” Captain Skiller said.

“The message is beware of the road conditions...you’ve got to drive to the conditions at all times.”

Victoria Police was also on the scene, with the incident declared under control at around 2am.

Abandoned house goes up in flames

By Parker McKenzie A house in Boronia caught fire in the early hours of Friday 21 October, with the cause yet to be determined as police continue investigating.

Fire Rescue Victoria crews responded to the fire at a property on Boronia Road after calls to Triple Zero reported the sound of explosions.

Firefighters arrived at the scene to find the 15-metre by 25-metre brick home in flames, with FRV and CFA firefighters containing the fire by 3.09pm.

FRV said the home sustained significant

damage “with most of the internal structure involved in the flames.”

“Three neighbouring homes were evacuated by Victoria Police with the incident deemed suspicious,” FRV said in an online statement.

CFA had three vehicles from the Boronia and Bayswater brigades supporting FRV. Boronia CFA Fire Station is located across the road from the scene of the fire.

The house, which is abandoned and set to be demolished, is known to be regularly occupied by squatters and CFA crews were worried there was still somebody inside after they arrived.

Ambulance Victoria attended the scene, but there were no patients requiring treatment or transport.

Construction workers at a set of units next door confirmed the damage was contained to the property and Victoria Police Forensic Services Department members were at the scene to investigate around 2pm.

Police said the cause of the fire is yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing.

Nominations for Australia Awards open Residents are encouraged to nominate those doing amazing work in the community ahead of the 2023 Australia Day Awards.

People can be nominated for Yarra Ranges Council’s 2023 Australia Day Awards if they are Australian citizens — unless there are exceptional circumstances — and must be residents of Australia.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Cr Jim Child said the annual awards give the community a chance

to recognise the outstanding work of individuals.

“There are so many people in the Yarra Ranges who give back so much to their community, and the Australia Day Awards are a great opportunity for them to be congratulated and celebrated,” Mayor Child said.

“We’d love to receive as many nominations as we can to highlight anyone who is

making a positive impact in our region.”

The award categories are Citizen of the Year (above 26 years old), Young Citizen of the Year (under the age of 26), Environmental Achiever of the Year, Ken McIntosh Memorial Award (under the age of 26), Community Group of the Year, Mayor’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Ian De La Rue Award for Community Leadership.

A Knoxfield-based business was sentenced without conviction in Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 18 October, after earlier pleading guilty to one charge of failing to provide or maintain systems of work that were safe and without risk to health.

High-Fire Heating Pty Ltd was fined $30,000 and ordered to pay costs of $2,509 after a worker’s hand was crushed in a power press machine in 2019, resulting in him needing five operations and suffering from numbness and loss of function.

In September 2019, a worker was attempting to free a jam inside a press without having switched the machine off, when he accidentally pressed the foot pedal while reaching into the stamping bed which activated the machine, the court heard.

A WorkSafe investigation found that the company had fitted a guard onto the machine around two years before the incident, but due to the frequency of jams, it was held open by a hook.

The court heard the company had prior knowledge of the risk because a Worksafe inspector had attended the workplace in 2015 and issued compliance notices.

Monbulk CFA supports rescue effort Four Monbulk CFA rope operators were called out for a high-angle rope rescue in Weburn on Saturday 22 October.

The brigade was alerted at 9.38pm to assist an injured hiker in an old quarry, where they set up a rope system to bring the hiker down.

“This was a complex task which took some time to perform safely with crew safety paramount in the planning and undertaking of the rescue,” Monbulk CFA said on Facebook.

“Thanks to Wandin CFA, FRV high angle technicians, Wesburn CFA, SES for all the lighting assistance as well as the mule, Ambulance Vic members incl MICA, VicPol and Yellingbo CFA for rehab. A great result with no additional injuries to anyone involved.”

Foothills support

By Parker McKenzie Foothills Community Care will receive a $50,000 grant from the state government if the Labor Party is re-elected at the November state election.

The election promise was announced on Wednesday 19 October by Labor candidate for Monbulk Daniela De Martino.

Meals coordinator for Foothills Community Care Shannon Kay said the funding would allow Foothills to further build its programs, outreach and new initiatives.

It’s really validating of the work that we do and particularly of Stephen as the founder and CEO of foothills for over 20 years,” she said.

“He’s really built something that has such a strong and well-known reputation in the com-

munity to attract this kind of support.”

Foothills Community Care was established in 2002 to provide a space where people can connect and engage with each other, as they address challenges like family and domestic violence, homelessness, addiction, poverty, mental health issues and social isolation.

Ms Martino said for many people, Foothills Community Care is more than just a meal.

“It’s about being welcomed at the table and sharing conversations in a safe and inclusive space. Which is why we’re supporting this wonderful not-for-profit organisation,” she said.

“Labor is doing what matters because no one should have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.”

The grant money can be used wherever

needed throughout the organization, which runs community meal nights in Ferntree Gully and Upwey alongside other services.

Ms Kay said it costs roughly $1000 a week to cover all the food programs run by Foothills Community Care without considering “behind the scenes” and administrative costs.

“We also recognise that we are one of many organisations, and there are a lot of wonderful projects going on throughout the community,” she said.

“We really appreciate being noticed and we recognise that it takes a whole community approach to respond to the needs as well as create the connections and build a healthy, wellconnected community overall.”

Liberal Party’s $280,000 pledge for youth group

By Parker McKenzie Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. will receive a “lifechanging” $280,000 if the Liberal Party is elected to form government after the November 26 state election.

Liberal Party candidate for Monbulk Gareth Ward announced the election promise on Friday 14 October at a Youth Voices event held by the organisation.

“Tribe Youth Group does such important work supporting our most vulnerable younger Victorians here in Monbulk,” he said.

“I’m proud to be part of a team that helps back them.”

Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. is an independent non-religious youth organisation aiming to create an inclusive space for teens and

kids to meet and make friends.

Founder of Tribe Belinda Grooby said the funding, if it comes to fruition, would make a massive difference in the lives of young people.

“We’ve got young people that are really struggling at the moment and have been for the last few years particularly since the pandemic and Tribe Youth Inc. continues to grow with them,” she said.

“Hundred of kids have come through Tribe in the last four and a half years. We continue to grow weekly, so for us, that kind of funding will be life-changing.”

Ms Grooby founded the organisation in 2018 because of a concern about the lack of opportunities for young teens to connect with each other outside school and sports.

Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. is a volunteer organisation and is funded by community partners and Yarra Ranges Council.

She said part of the funding would be used for a social enterprise with the aim of “supporting young people into getting proper training.”

“We’re hosting a coffee them and then we try to get young people to be qualified which will support our ongoing sustainability, but also give young people the opportunity to learn a real skill that they could take anywhere,” she said.

“Funding will go towards supporting young people in areas such as mental health, social connection, and connecting young people with each other to build social skills.”

Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. hosts regu-

lar youth meetings at Monbulk Living and Learning Centre on Fridays, with food provided for those attending.

Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs Dr Matt Bach said Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. is an example of a not-for-profit organisation supporting hundreds of vulnerable people.

“Over the course of the last two years, we’ve seen first-hand the impact Covid has had on our youngest and most vulnerable Victorians,” he said.

“The Liberals and Nationals will always assist organisations like Tribe Youth Group who do amazing work supporting young people in accessing counselling services, work experience and even permanent housing.”

Big pledges for schools

By Tyler Wright The Labor party has planned to spend big on schools in the Dandenong Ranges if re-elected in November, with almost $9 million pledged to upgrade and modernise Emerald Secondary College, and install electronic speed signs near Gembrook Primary School.

Emerald Secondary College principal James Barut said the promised funding will give the school the capacity to build a middle school space used by Year 9s and Year 10s who now have access to more elective subjects.

“The new vision of engagement will correlate well with capacity to teach, to run introductory lectures or to facilitate a differentiation where we have different groups working at different levels,” Mr Barut said.

“By being able to open up those larger learning spaces, we move away from the traditional classrooms…[it] gives us more options to spread out.”

The $8.77 million investment is set to complete Emerald Secondary College’s master plan, which has already seen a refurbished administrative block, a new resource centre with an attached careers hub and technology upgrades for textiles and food technology areas.

“Flowing on from that we now have the capacity to modernise some of the older buildings in the school… and the money will go a long way into making that happen,” Mr Barut said.

Gembrook Primary School principal Brendan Fitzpatrick said the potential installation of electronic variable speed signs outside the school is a “big win” for the community.

“In 2019 we collected 800 signatures that were presented to VicRoads as part of a campaign to have them installed,” Mr Fitzpatrick said.

“There’s been a big increase in enrolments... enrolments have gone from about 160 to 250 kids [in six years], so that means more families [and] more vehicles on the road.”

Mr Fitzpatrick also said rainy weather and

fog are also an added safety concern.

“Add to that - our school crossing is probably 50 metres of the crest of a blind hill,” he said.

“There was a clear need for those signs… and thank goodness we’ve got that commitment now.”

Labor candidate for Monbulk Daniela De Martino said upgrades to Emerald Secondary College will provide students with the “worldclass facilities they deserve”.

“As a former teacher, I know that students thrive when they have the best teachers delivering their education in excellent facilities,” Ms De Martino said.

“That’s why the Andrews Labor Government has invested more than $12.8 billion to build and upgrade schools in every corner of the state – making sure every student has every chance.”

Ms De Martino also said a Labor government “will deliver safer roads for families and school children in Gembrook”.

“We’re doing what matters – delivering safer, better roads for communities in Monbulk with electronic variable signs at Gembrook Primary School,” Ms De Martino said.

Liberal candidate for Monbulk, Gareth Ward said the coalition will be making an “exciting announcement” about Emerald Secondary College during the election campaign, and “unlike Labor – the commitment we make will be honoured, and it will be delivered on budget”.

“A Liberal government will deliver for the school, while reining in Labor’s runaway state debt,” Mr Ward said.

Mr Ward also said the Liberal party has committed to installing electronic speed sings out the from of Gembrook Primary School, with $1 million for the entrance of the school to have its own dedicated entrance lane.

Mr Ward also expessed concerns the state government has not delivered on the issue over the last term, despite community concerns being raised.

Education funding ramps up in Bayswater electorate

By Parker McKenzie Both the Labor and Liberal Parties have committed to upgrading Kent Park Primary School if elected to government at the November 26 state election, albeit with a $400,000 difference.

On Monday 17 October, Bayswater MP Jackson Taylor announced a re-elected Labor government would invest $900,000 into the school for a new synthetic oval, running track and playground.

Mr Taylor said the primary is an amazing local school that deserves the best facilities.

“I’m proud that a re-elected Andrews Labor Government deliver a new synthetic oval, running track and playground so everyone gets a fair go,” he said.

“I’ve been proud to advocate not just on behalf of Kent Park Primary but each and every one of our local schools by delivering over $70 million in upgrades – to ensure every kid gets the best start in life.”

On Friday September 16, Shadow Minister for Education David Hodgett and Ferntree Gully MP Nick Wakeling announced a Coalition government would invest $500,000 into the Primary School for a new synthetic oval, new asphalting on a play area, upgraded prep play equipment and school maintenance work.

Mr Wakeling, who is the Liberal candidate for Baywater after the Ferntree Gully electorate was abolished ahead of the election, said he knows the school has been “longing to tackle its maintenance list.”

Groups get grants More than 60 community groups will share in over $480,000 in grant funding through Yarra Ranges Council’s Grants for Community Program.

Grants of up to $10,000 were available to not-for-profit groups and creatives to help

build mental and physical health, support sustainable community connections and help local places thrive.

Streeton Ward Councillor Andrew Fullagar said the program was one of the Council’s most loved initiatives.

“It’s fantastic how our grant programs empower the community and allow local groups and individuals to do what they do best, and the shining example of that,” Cr Fullagar said.

Archive storm stories with funding help

By Tyler Wright The Hills Creative Alliance (HCA) will look to archive stories from those involved in the recovery from the June 2021 storm event, with a $2,000 boost from Yarra Ranges Council’s Grants for Community 2023 round.

A team of community members will be established to collate information on the unusual ferocity of the winds in the storm event, the trauma of trees falling, devastation to property, stories of emergency services that provided immediate relief as well as the weeks without power following and impacts felt the year after.

‘Stories of the Storm - June 2021’ will be in operation in 2023, with hopes the stories will be archived with help from the Public Record Office of Victoria for researchers to access in the future.

“We want to understand the stories from the people who helped us; the stories about what the CFA did, what the SES did...we’ll be including the story of the wonderful Kalorama collective... local people in Kalorama who responded immediately to provide

warm drinks and support to people whose homes had been devastated,” HCA secretary Liz Millman said.

The ‘Stories of the Storm’ project is a continuation of the work the HCA has been doing throughout 2022, including storytelling sessions on Fridays at Olinda Community House and an art exhibition at Kalorama’s Karwarra Gardens.

“We need to be looking at emergency planning...so that all the families who are living in the area along the [Mount Dandenong Tourist] road in the hills have clear direction as to the safest plan that will take them off the hill and where they need to register in turn of another emergency...

“Because it could be [fallen] trees, or it could be landslides, if the roads become impassable, we need to have a plan for the community to respond to that eventuality.”

More than 60 local community groups will share in more than $480,000 in grant funding after being announced as successful applicants for the 2023 Grants for Community program.

agar said the program which has been running for many years, was one of Yarra Ranges Council’s most loved initiatives.

“It’s fantastic how our grant programs empower the community and allow local groups and individuals to do what they do best, and the Grants for Community program in particular is a shining example of that,” Cr Fullagar said.

Three funding streams make up the Grants for Community program, including Community Development, Arts and Heritage, and Festivals and Events.

Grant applications were assessed by two independent assessment panels made up of five people each, with a mixture of community members and a Yarra Ranges Council staff member on each panel.

“To be able to support their endeavours and their vision through a program such as this is a real privilege, and I can’t wait to see the great outcomes from it,” Cr Fullagar said.

“To those who were not successful on this occasion, I hope we can do all we can to help you be successful next time as well.”

Plans for veggie garden and dining area

The Belgrave Food Garden will continue to grow both inside and outside of its home after receiving 12 months of funding from Yarra Ranges Council’s Grants for Community program.

Head of the Belgrave Food Garden Committee Ellie McSheedy said the $10,000 in funding — the most available to organisations through the grants program — will be used to continue existing programs while creating new ones.

“One is continuing the work we’ve already done around putting on free or low-cost workshops, to empower and educate the community to grow their own vegetables. We’ll do that all through next year,” she said.

“We’re also broadening some of our activities to bring in children’s workshops during school holidays; hopefully it’s appealing to a broader community again.”

The grant will also be used for a community compost scheme established by collaborating with the Belgrave Traders Association and Living and Learning Pakenham.

Ms McSheedy said the grant covers 12 months of activities and will ensure programs at the food garden are funded for the next year.

“We will also be fortunate enough to bring on a project officer for a few hours a week, which is going to really help with coordinating those extra workshops and activities for the community,” she said.

“We are continuing to grow the profile of the garden, recruit more volunteers and really try to make the garden space a real focal point of the Belgrave township, where people can come and meet and be together.”

Located at 1624 Burwood Highway, Belgrave, the Food Garden was set up by volunteers in November 2021.

Ms McSheedy said securing the grant was only possible with the support and partnership of the local community.

“That’s absolutely critical in the success of the garden ongoing,” she said.

“We really truly want to work together.”

By Tyler Wright The Kalorama Collective will look to forge ahead with its plan to create a communal veggie garden and an outdoor meal and seating area for locals in 2023 with a $8,000 injection from Yarra Ranges Council’s latest Grants for Community round.

Kalorama Collective treasurer Paige Kelsall said the funds would be put towards organising skills based events or social gatherings for locals, and a space to hold emergency response equipment and extra furniture to hire near Kalorama Oval.

Ms Kelsall said the Kalorama Collective has helped more than 500 residents since the June 2021 storm event, holding monthly community dinners, which have until now been entirely self-funded by the group.

“With the funding we can we can provide good food, some entertainment, really enhancing the space for people to get together,” Ms Kelsall said.

“It’s a high risk bushfire area, and now as we know that with storms, it’s really important that people know who is living near them, and what their needs might be,” Ms Kelsall said.

Ms Kelsall said with some people still not in their homes after the storm event and battling with insurance, it can help to provide a space of social support.

“Because after the storm, as horrible as it was, everyone got together and spent a lot of time together at the oval, sharing meals and talking, and it was reliable....so with the community dinners, it’s providing that ongoing connection.”

Ms Kelsall said an ultimate goal of the Kalorama Collective is to create a permanent, versatile space for the community with internet access, a kitchen and rooms.

“Things will change and evolve, more people will come in, and then you get different ideas [and] different projects to look at,” she said.

The $10,000 in funding — the most available to organisations through the grants program — will be used to continue existing programs while creating new ones.

Sound art show spreads

By Parker McKenzie Artist Peter Mcilwain’s Bird Child Spirit exhibition will feature in three new locations throughout the Yarra Ranges, thanks to a $9,955 grant from the Grants for Community Program.

The sound art installation was launched in Selby on March 6 2022, where recordings of children imitating birds could be heard as visitors walked across a short trail.

Mr Mcilwain said the installation, which ended on April 19, had around 600 visits.

“The community got on board with it and were quite supportive,” he said.

“The idea is that when I go to a particular region, the sounds will comprise of the children from that area.”

Funding from the grant will be used by Mr Mcilwain to work with interest groups, families and children to create recordings before the installation.

“That’s how you know you get the community engaged in the project, so it’s not just parachuted in,” he said.

“It’s really encouraging is supported at the community level and Yarra Ranges Council should be congratulated for that.”

He flagged Warburton and Healesville as two potential locations, alongside potentially taking the project interstate to Townsville.

Mr Mcilwain said there are several requirements to consider when choosing the location for the three new installations.

“It doesn’t have traffic, it has the right kinds of trees to name a few,” he said.

“It’s going to be a bit of a process but what I’m hoping to do is have them evenly spread around the Shire.”

Film festival receives essential grant funding for future

By Parker McKenzie A grant from Yarra Ranges Council has ensured the Lantern and Light International Children’s Film Festival will return in 2023, after the success of this year’s festival.

The Grants for Community program awarded $9,280 to the not-for-profit organisation Ranges Academy of Performing Arts Inc. for the three-day film festival, held at the CAMEO cinema in Belgrave.

RAPA founding director Rainsford Towner said the success of the 2022 film festival has made them reconsider how the 2023 version will be run.

“It was probably a bigger success than we had anticipated in some ways. It was our first serious festival effort after Covid,” he said.

“We need to stretch the festival over a few more days to accommodate people who want to see more of the festival.”

The festival started in 2019 and features

short films made by people aged six to 18, returning in person to CAMEO cinema after a disrupted two years during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Towner said this year’s festival saw a

record number of international entries.

“The importance is what we’re doing for our young filmmakers in the area and that’s increasingly exciting,” he said.

The festival will also include a free best of the Lantern and Light International Children’s Festival Regional Tour in four Yarra Valley Regional Communities during the 2023 September school holidays.

Mr Towner said the funding from Yarra Ranges is vital to the future of the festival.

“It’s probably the most important partnership we have because the grant provided seed funding for the festival and without it, it wouldn’t happen,” he said.

“It allows us to confirm with various parties the festival is going ahead, it allows us to open submission and gives us the confidence to work on it for next year. Without the grant, we don’t have the confidence to know whether we’re going to be able to do a festival.”

It will be spooktacular

By Tyler Wright Around 20 shops in Upwey’s main street will be participating in a new Trick or Treat trail on Saturday 29 October, with residents encouraged to get dressed up and enjoy a photo booth and games this Halloween.

‘Upwey Halloween Spectacular’ organiser and resident Tamara Thompson said she wants to see “kids smiling faces, kids having fun, but also families connecting within that community as well”.

“Even though we are part of Melbourne, we are that little outer community and we have a really sweet family orientated community here,” Ms Thompson said.

“What we want to see is this to be the start of many to come…we want to be able to draw in families and celebrate little things in and around Upwey, and kickstart something fun.”

With the Upwey Community Group supporting the event, Ms Thompson approached each trader in the town’s Main Street, seeing who would like to put treats and even some ‘tricks’ outside their store.

The result has led to a map of all participating stores, drawing an adventure past the playground, where families may even be able to get crafty with the local scouts group.

“We’re hoping that the shops really come [as] a part of Halloween…dress up and participate really well,” Ms Thompson said.

“We’re hoping to get a reasonable crowd [so] that this can be an ongoing event too…so other shops that aren’t participating or are closed for [the] weekend see the benefits in it too.”

‘Upwey Halloween Spectacular’ will be held from 10am to 1pm with no registration required - just some spooky outfits.

Halloween on the Green returns to support schools

By Tyler Wright Iconic Hills tradition ‘Halloween on the Green’ will be returning to the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve this year, raising funds for local schools.

Held by the Philanthropic Collective on Sunday 30 October, Halloween on the Green creator Andrew Fillip-Gautier, said almost $10,000 worth of prizes have been donated from the community for this year’s event.

“Businesses aren’t able to support us financially like they once did pre-Covid… post-Covid they still wanted the event to go ahead, and they’ve shown that in spades by all the vouchers that people have donated from their businesses,” Mr Fillip-Gautier said.

“Whether a voucher is big or small, it is a testament to the resilience of our community.”

For Mr Fillip-Gautier, Halloween on the Green is all about connection and inclusion of each other.

“People are looking forward to having that opportunity to all come together again, and dress up and have some fun in our Hills flavour.”

The Philanthropic Collective has also teamed up with social enterprise B-Alternative this year to facilitate reusable vessels made out of compostable rice husks for food service, with $2 from each entry fee going towards the initiative.

Halloween on the Green will run from 11am to 5pm at 16 Clarkmont Road in Sassafras, with tickets available through the event’s website.

Creating art with Breslin

By Parker McKenzie Every so often in life, you meet somebody who changes your perspective.

Anthony Breslin has that effect. Despite the obvious pain he is enduring, kindness and self-reflection resonate around him and through his art.

“I’ve probably cost myself time here by doing this show in my condition,” he says candidly, two days before the exhibition’s opening day.

“That may sound dramatic, but it isn’t. I want to hang around, but I’m aware of the fact that I’m not going to be around for a long while.”

Breslin, dressed in a bandana, fuzzy blue pyjama bottoms and paint-splattered slippers, looks every bit the artist you’d expect. His walking cane is always close by, as the toll of his long-term illness makes moving around a Herculean feat.

“When I was in the hospital with leukemia initially, my friends bought in drawing tables for me to use in the isolation and transplant rooms,” he says.

“I started doing all these figures, I had bones, blood and cells in them without even thinking about it.”

Those images Breslin drew after being diagnosed with leukemia in 2014 still hang in the Alfred Hospital today, a long way from Burrinja Cultural Centre, where his first major show in over a decade will be held.

His career has taken many turns, from writing and producing stage plays to working in the film industry and owning a gallery of his own in Carnegie. He’s filled his days creating works for communities, raising thousands of dollars for charity selling art in the Myer windows and meeting lifelong friends along the way.

Creating art is living for Breslin and it’s clear the physical, spiritual and mental anguish caused by his illness won’t stop him from creating.

“There were studios here and when I approached them, they were really happy to have me so they gave me the studio,” Breslin says.

“It was really quiet when I got here because of Covid and they were a bit blown away by me bringing all my assistants and just doing this huge project. They offered me the show and it was a privilege to be offered all the main galleries, which doesn’t happen very often.”

Like his art, Breslin connects with people.

In one quiet moment in the art studio, he discusses the intuitive connection between people who have had organ transplants after a chance conversation, seemingly oblivious to

Breslin says he is grateful towards what 30 years as a full-time artist has done for him, from making a good income to travelling the world doing what he loves.

“For me to produce a couple of hundred pieces a year to supply all the galleries and then do the shows overseas, I was working around the clock,” he says.

“The more you’re working the faster and the better you get at developing styles.”

Those styles — developed over decades of putting his hands to work — create a psychedelic and surreal variety of work that lives up to the name of the exhibition, taken from old French and meaning ‘a set of diverse elements,’ with pencil drawings he created throughout his travels in the early 1990s vividly contrasting with painted chairs, ukuleles and original works created for Melange.

At the entry, a video plays of Breslin’s TRYBE: An Opera in Paint, where you catch sight of the man in a very different time in his life. Eclectic performance and powerful movements of art-

istry create a vivid contrast to his later works, where mortality takes centre stage.

“I realised a long time ago that I don’t make the work. I think everyone has this experience in their own way, whether they acknowledge it or not: it comes through me, not from me,” he says.

“I’ve been so ill for so long, I know about out-of-body experiences myself because I’ve been so close to dying a few times. I’ve had a lot of interesting experiences with letting go of my mortality.”

Within the main gallery, there his recent works — gigantean art pieces combining sculpting and painting — dominate the walls alongside animations of his art, while a stack of intricately painted chairs is positioned centrally within the room.

Next comes his early art, created while travelling to places like Israel and the UK, where he planned to pursue a career in acting, which would form part of his application for formal art education at RMIT University.

The final room in the gallery displays painted ukuleles and frog sculptures, paintings of

Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS horses and kangaroos and a giant jigsaw puzzle, adorned with a distinctive style prevalent, although not universal, throughout his work.

“Even if people walk in and go, I don’t like this guy’s work, that doesn’t really affect me because I didn’t really make it in the first place,” he says.

“Even that is an experience for them. It’s telling them something about themselves because you can’t really look at a painting and see the artist, yet you can see a reflection of yourself.

“That’s how life is.”

The opening of Melange on Saturday 15 October saw friends laud over his achievements, his collaboration with the Coalition for the Protection of Race Horses highlighted and the impact he has had on those around him lamented to a packed house at Burrinja.

A tired Breslin, feeling all the years he has struggled with illness and the toll of creating Melange, didn’t take the time to shuffle through the gallery alongside his audience. It wasn’t his art after all; it was merely created through him.

‘Man Overboard’ exhibition at Selby Community House

By Tyler Wright ‘Man Overboard’ is a phrase seafarers yell when one of their peers has fallen into deep waters below; a plea for help when one of their own is in dire straits.

It is also the title of a new exhibition coming to Selby Community House on Friday 28 October, encouraging men in the Yarra Ranges to call for support when they are struggling with their mental and physical health.

Seven local male artists aged between 30 and 70 have created multimedia works; ranging from collage, oil paintings and illustrations to copper and brass sculptures, showcasing a wide range of experiences including one man’s journey of chemotherapy treatment for facial cancer and an emerging artist who has found solace within art therapy.

The idea for ‘Man Overboard’ came from Artspace Selby’s engagement with people who were impacted by Covid-19, and statistics from a free Mental Health First Aid course on men’s mental health and suicide rates from Yarra Ranges Council.

In these statistics was a “huge discrepancy” between how men speak about their mental heath in comparison to women; and recognise the “fatal effects” of poor mental health, Selby Community House community engagement coordinator Jordan Sibley said.

have less mental health issues, it’s that our culture doesn’t provide an atmosphere for that discussion,” Sibley said.

“Having more things that provide a platform that encourages people to really look at the value of men’s mental and physical health, will assist in that ongoing discussion.”

High resolution photos of the artworks created by men in the Yarra Ranges will be for sale, with 100 per cent of the proceeds injected into the Belgrave Men’s Shed.

“That’s our way of: one, supporting the Men’s Shed, but also reflecting on how important these hubs are for men to meet together, have companionship and also share information about their health and well being,” Sibley said.

Selby CFA members will be providing sausages at the ‘Man Overboard’ exhibition opening on Friday 28 October from 6pm to 7pm, with local male act ‘Yee-Haw’ performing live music and a light platter of food provided.

Artists from the exhibition will also be giving a free 20 minute presentation on Saturday 12 November from 11am to 12pm Belgrave Library, discussing their artistic practice and how their work relates to the topic of men’s health.

Small and caring school St Thomas More Catholic Primary School is situated in Belgrave in the Shire of Yarra Ranges bordered by Sherbrooke Forest.

It attracts enrolments from a wide geographical area throughout the southern part of the Dandenong Ranges and serves the communities of Belgrave, Tecoma, Upwey, Selby, Menzies Creek, Clematis, Emerald, Avonsleigh and Cockatoo.

ECH has received 2 solar grants in 2022 which include additional battery storage from the Commonwealth government, thanks to Jason Wood’s support. We also received solar panel funding from the Victorian government to install a 5kw system which will increase our operational capacity especially when there is a power outage as well as reduce our utility bills. Candidate wants action

By Parker McKenzie Local business owner Leah Folloni isn’t new to a political campaign, having run as a candidate for the Animal Justice Party three times before nominating as their candidate for Monbulk.

Her animal welfare advocacy goes beyond politics too, running the self-funded Sacred Hearts Animal Sanctuary, where she cares for around 45 rescued animals, and alongside business Emerald Gardens Nursery.

Ms Folloni said the people of Monbulk want “a real solution to introduced animals in our natural environment.”

“As far as animal issues go the list is endless really, we need to do so much better to help animals,” she said.

“People want to see change for non-human animals.”

She said she advocates for the ending of duck shooting, ensuring pigs aren’t kept in sow stalls and farrowing crates, the banning of 1080 poison, ending greyhound racing due

“In my years of being an animal advocate I have seen gut-wrenching cruelty, most of it legal and often standard practice,” she said.

“I’ve seen many dead, starving, suffering animals on farms with little-to-no conse-

quence or change ever occurring. We need a publicly-funded Independent Animal Protection Agency and laws to recognize and protect animals’ rights and sentience.”

Ms Folloni, who lives in Emerald with her husband and two sons, is passionate about educating people about and advocating for the benefits of a vegan lifestyle, bringing awareness to the impact of animal agriculture on climate change.

She said she believes in the Animal Justice Party’s values of kindness, equality, rationality and non-violence.

“The state government needs to listen and get with the times in terms of animal welfare, we have fallen behind in so many areas and we need to do more. As a collective species, we are better and we need to do better,” she said.

Musicians gather to fundraise for crisis relief service

By Tyler Wright Local musicians will head to Emerald’s Gemco Theatre on Friday 18 November to raise funds for Support Act, a crisis relief service for workers in the music industry.

The Reiltin Collective; made up of internationally acclaimed Irish-born singersongwriter Maria Forde, violin-mandolin virtuoso Greg Hunt and Dandenong Ranges local pianist and vocalist Jules Vines, will join the Victorian Irish Dance Academy and RRR storyteller and poet Ian Bland to present an evening of Celtic entertainment.

CDs will be on sale, supporting the ‘Melbourne in 60 Seconds’ project; a collection of 60 second original songs capturing the essence of Melbourne - from the ‘G,’ Moomba, laneways and the suburbs.

Vocalist and Macclesfield local Jules Vines said the Reiltin Collective is “delighted’ to be able to perform together once again.

“It’s expensive to make music… anywhere up to $15,000 to $18,000 to make an album and then you need to be able to sell it, so people who were musicians and had no gigs at all and they were on the breadline perhaps

beforehand, through Covid really struggled; and that’s what [Support Act] supports,” Vines said.

Vines said the traditional tunes, storytelling and dancing will hopefully get people singing along, tapping their feet and “enjoying life the way it’s meant to be... with music, warmth and joy amongst friends”.

“We’re setting up a format to be able to host another concert with some of the other musicians on [the Melbourne in 60 seconds] CD going forward,” Vines said.

“If it goes well, we should be able to help build live music back here in the hills and help the Gemco at the same time.”

Store inspired by travel After a discovery trip to Egypt in the late ‘80s, Ingrid Wilde returned to the humble town of Olinda only to begin her own unique shopping experience inspired by travel.

What evolved was her business Where The Wilde Things Are, offering an array of treasures, gifts, jewellery pieces and textiles.

“I returned from an archaeology trip to Egypt in 1989 fuelled with a passion to start my own jewellery design business which eventually grew into the shop and online store you see today,” Ingrid said.

Having been designing and making jewellery for over 30 years, Ingrid’s array stretches from heirloom bridal accessories to special occasion and costume jewellery.

“My jewellery designs largely feature Swarovski Crystal and freshwater pearls and I love bringing my clients’ jewellery dreams to life.”

Ingrid was able to bring her own beach wedding jewellery dream to life earlier this year when she and her partner married at Wategos Beach in Byron Bay.

While travelling the world to locate ethical and sustainable items has been a highlight for Ingrid, there is one thing in her career that stands out above them all.

How to pick out a scam With people using digital technology and accessing the online environment more than ever, the risk of exposure to scams has increased dramatically over the past few years.

Put simply, a scam is someone trying to trick people for their own personal gain. This includes direct financial gain, identity theft or infecting devices with malicious software.

Scams can be very sophisticated and well-organised, and anyone can be a victim of a scam.

There are many different types of scams.

Some examples include: requests to confirm details with a financial service provider, a text or email message with a link to track a package you might be expecting, or a phone call from the Australian Tax Office. Many scams are online through platforms such as email, online messaging and the internet, however they can also happen in person. For example, someone at the front door purporting to offer home maintenance services that require up-front payment could be a scam.

The good news is that there are ways we can protect ourselves from being scammed.

It’s important to always question unexpected communications – even from people we know. Some scams replicate email addresses and phone numbers we are familiar with, so if something seems out of place, follow up with the person to check. If you receive a message on social media from someone you haven’t heard from for a while – ring them first to check in. This could include someone trying to “add” or “follow” you or a message saying “It’s been a while..”.

If you receive communication from a business, ask yourself is the person contacting you an official representative? If you are unsure, check with the company or authority by searching details online and calling their main number.

by Kate Holden Authored by journalist Kate Holden, The Winter Road is the winner of the 2021 Walkley Book Award. It also won the 2022 NSW Premier’s Literary Awards – Douglas Stewart Nonfiction Prize, 2022 NSW Premier’s History Awards – Community and Regional History Prize, and 2022 Sisters in Crime Davitt Award for Nonfiction Crime.

The book has a chilling subtitle: “A story of legacy, land and a killing at Croppa Creek.” Specifically, the cold-blooded murder took place on a dirt road in the farming country near Moree in northwest New South Wales.

On July 29, 2014, 80-year-old farmer Ian Turnbull shot environmental compliance officer Glen Turner in the back. The old man clearly knew what he was doing. He was a good shooter, too, the four bullets from his .22 targeting the officer’s neck. Afterwards, he dropped the gun and went home to wait for the police.

Turnbull was sentenced to 35 years in jail and a non-parole period of 22 years, but the case is much, much more about the killing. It is about a farmer’s desire to secure his family’s legacy on the richest agricultural soil in Australia. It is about his sense of entitlement over the land that he lived and worked on.

That sense of entitlement is perhaps best conveyed through the following words from English philosopher John Locke in 1860, which were quoted in The Sydney Morning Herald in 1839 to justify European posses-

sion of the Australian continent: “Whatsoever, then, he removes out of the state that Nature hath provided and left it in, he hath mixed his Labour with it, and joined to it something that is his own, and thereby makes it his property.”

But there is an important distinguishment to make between “land” and “property”. As Holden explains, our ownership of a property does not and should not mean we have every right to destroy the plants and animals living on the land. Even more fundamentally flawed is our taking for granted of the land as properties that can be owned and “improved”.

The author’s argument is compelling: At the heart of European colonisation is violence against the land. By claiming this continent as “terra nullius”, land is seen as an opportunity for seizure and personal advantage. “The strongest, the first, the most vigorous or powerful take the spoils. Once seized, it is theirs. Anyone who wants something of it will have to pay.”

The Winter Road is an intense and confronting read, as it draws on multiple philosophical, cultural and environmental sources to illustrate the history of our nation’s violence against native ecologies.

There is much to digest, but the overwhelming impression is haunting.

Sadly, in the same way that Turnbull said he was sorry to kill Turner but it did not amount to remorse, such haunting impression is perhaps mixed with a sense of powerlessness in the face of an agricultural tradition that we have long been told inspires a sense of achievement and pride. This is indeed a quintessential Australian story.

The Rock turned superhero Black Adam Starring Dwayne Johnson, Pierce Brosnan and Aldis Hodge Rated M 3.5/5 Black Adam is an exciting superhero film burdened with muddled themes.

In the city of Khandaq, the vengeful, godlike being Teth-Adam (Dwayne Johnson) awakens after five thousand years.

The plot is driven by yet another frustrating Macguffin – a crown imbued with demonic power – but the narrative is more concerned with Adam’s personal growth, as he comes to temper his brutality and place selflessness over vengeance. Johnson is an engaging, intimidating lead as a stolid antihero who gradually comes out of his shell.

Several of the action scenes utilise stunning slow-motion and particle effects, with the highlight being a sequence of Adam casually obliterating a mercenary troop, shrugging off bullets and redirecting mortars. The fight scenes are well-composed and graphic without being bloody, but less interesting when they default to the DC Comics template of

mid-air punch-ups.

Black Adam strangely conflates the killing of active aggressors with the murder of innocents, and despite bringing this issue up, the film has little to say about the Justice Society of America – a team of superpowered peacekeepers – being foreign interlopers in Khandaq.

The pacing is erratic, frequently returning to the same location for dour dialogue, but features a couple of effective twists and character threads. The climax also pulls a new monster antagonist out of nowhere.

The Justice Society is an uneven bunch of supporting characters.

Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan) is a noble, wry man hiding the torment from his prophetic powers, and the haughty Hawkman (Aldis Hodge) is a fun counterpoint to Adam’s own ego.

Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) have endearing personalities but very little to do in the plot.

Black Adam is a thrilling, affecting superhero adventure that fumbles its own themes, and is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

with visual artist Tracey Samios

TRACEY SAMIOS is a visual artist, working mainly in acrylics, pastels and linocut printmaking. Her artwork is a mixed bag varying in styles from naive to abstract, using bright colours and inspiration from real life and her imagination. Her art studio is at the Burrinja Cultural Centre and art gallery in Upwey. Her work is inspired by wonderful painters such as Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, L.S. Lowry, Joan Miro, Margaret Olley, Gary Bunt, Anders Hultman, Vuillard, Cedric Morris, Joan Eardley and many others.

What is something people don’t know about you?

When I was in my late 20s, I lived and worked on Norfolk Island for a year. It was a great experience, living like a local and it certainly ignited my passion for travel. I worked as a secretary for the ‘All Seasons Resorts - South Pacific Resort Hotel’ and during that time participated in lots of their local groups and events. The island is very picturesque, with beautiful areas of sub-tropical rainforests. My two favourite spots were Kingston Beach area and the view from on top of Mountt Bates; where you had a magnificent 360 degree view of the island and the surrounding water.

Tell us about your role as an artist.

I started painting when Covid-19 hit. I had finally retired after 16 years of office work and decided to do something I had always dreamt of doing. I came across an online art challenge and decided to join. I began to paint daily and before long I was listing my paintings on the Bluethumb Art website for sale. https://bluethumb.com.au/tracey-samios In May this year, I applied for a studio at the Burrinja Cultural Centre and much to my delight, I was accepted. I now work at Studio number 16 in the aerie artist area of the Burrinja Cultural Centre. I can be found there on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, midday to 4pm and Saturday by appointment.

I would have to say my first art sale on the Bluethumb Art website - it gave me a real buzz! It also gave me the confidence to apply for a Studio space at the Burrinja Cultural Centre. Being accepted & working alongside other very talented creative artists makes me feel very grateful & privileged to have this new artistic world open up to me.

What do you love most about working and living in the Dandenong Ranges?

I love the vibe of the whole area; it is unique, arty, quirky and enveloping. I love the village style towns of Upwey, Tecoma, Belgrave, Kallista, Sassafras and Olinda to name a few. The lovely view of the rolling green hills when I drive along Glenfern Road in Upwey; I often stop and park my car on the side of the road and take photos of the hills dotted with sheep and cows, with Melbourne city buildings

shimmering on the horizon. I also love seeing the ever changing colours of the trees over the seasons. The Dandenong Ranges has a wonderful influence on my art.

What are some of your hobbies?

Painting, of course. I also enjoy doing pottery, sewing, reading and travelling. In 2008, our family joined a home exchange website called (homeexchange.com) and have completed numerous overseas trips by exchanging homes and cars with people from overseas. I think it’s the best way to experience living overseas like a local and better still at no cost. We only needed to pay for our airfares. I highly recommend it.

What event, past, present, or future, would you like to witness?

That scientists have found the cure for all cancers. I am also looking forward to our UK trip next year, which will by luck coincide with King Charles’s Coronation. And I am really looking forward to having an Art Exhibition on display at Burrinja at some stage in mid 2023.

Who do you admire the most?

Apart from my husband and our girls, I have always admired my beautiful mum. She was an elegant, caring and stylish lady. She was a wonderful mother, always supportive and great company. I miss her dearly and loved our time together chatting, going to see a film or play, shopping, travelling and family get togethers.

What is an important issue in the region you think needs exposure?

I think that Covid-19 and other factors have seen a huge increase in people suffering from anxiety. If there could be more mental health services made available to help people young and old, deal with these crippling symptoms, to enable them to cope better.

Women’s season begins Sunday 23 October was a momentous day for the FTGDCA, with the inaugural Women’s League kicking off their season.

Olinda Cricket Club’s senior women’s team played Upwey-Tecoma Cricket Club at Upwey.

Making her debut as on-field Captain, Martha Box won the toss and elected to field first, however the girls fell just short of runs after bowling and a fantastic batting chase.

With accurate bowling by the whole team, they kept the batting team to 3-121.

Massive congrats to Kath Eames, Trina Paevere and Hannalize Human for a fantastic first game, and Hannalize’s first catch and wicket.

In the second innings batting for 18 overs was dream team Stella Thornton and Caz Bates, who made a combined total of 67 (not including byes) and put in a massive effort towards the final score of 2-113.

Upwey-Tecoma played host to Olinda, with the Olinda skipper Martha Box winning the toss and electing to field in overcast conditions.

The Upwey-Tecoma opening pair of Jacqui Cooke and Bernie Black started well, compiling a partnership of 67 before Black was out caught for a well-made 22. Cooke played a true captain’s knock, finishing unbeaten on 45 at the completion of Upwey-Tecoma’s innings. The Tigers ended up on 3/121 off their 20 overs.

The Upwey-Tecoma bowlers maintained enough pressure throughout the innings to keep the target just out of reach, with Olinda falling 8 runs short to finish on 2/113. The pick of the Tiger bowlers was first-gamer Kaitlyn Roleff, who finished with 1/14 off 3 overs and a run-out.

A nice moment occurred when Trav Selby played the match with his dad Trevor.

Hopefully Trav gets to play with his son Archie one day soon, who loves his cricket also and plays in Monbulk’s Fast 9s.

Junior Monbulk cricketers reach success There was some action the local cricket scene of the weekend, with Monbulk Cricket Club’s U14s and U12s getting a match in on Friday night versing Johnson Park and Rowville respectively.

Coaches Brad Trinnick and Sean Arnott got the teams organised and playing some great cricket so early in the season, with both teams enjoyed good wins with some amazing individual performances.

In the U14’s Eamon Dawson took 3/5 off his 3 overs, before Will Blenkiron (18*) and Bailey Trinnick (27*) got us off to a great start before Mads Peacock smashed 52* from 34 balls in his first match for the Hawks.

The U12’s batted first with Quintin Kelly getting off to a flyer and ended up making 71 (that’s right 71) off 34 balls. All batters contributed nicely before Cooper Doyle in his debut for the Hawks made 22*.

Trav coaches Monbulk’s Fast 9s junior team and made 44* in this match and Trevor has been a super cricketer for many years, good enough to play in the Victorian over 60s team recently.

The team today also including three of our junior coaches: Trav Selby, Braden Grigg and Brad Trinnick.

Mid-week pennant saw Monbulk 1 playing Lilydale at home.

Jim Bras’ rink started well and led by 11 shots after four ends. They maintained control of the game and by the thirteenth end had increased the lead to 17 shots. They dropped a couple of ends in the back half of the game to win by 13 shots, 24 to 11.

Eric Markham’s rink trailed by two shots at the break. They then won 9 of the last 11 ends to win by 10 shots, 21 to 11.

Brian Smith’s rink held a 3-shot lead after 10 ends but then lost the next 5 ends to fall behind by 8 shots. They were unable to make inroads into the deficit and lost by 9 shots, 15 to 24.

Monbulk won overall by 14 shots, 60 to 46.

Monbulk 2 travelled to Berwick and met some stiff opposition. Peter Koomen’s rink found the going tough early and were 12 shots down after 8 ends.

They were unable to threaten at any stage eventually losing by 21 shots, 6 to 27. Graeme Goller’s rink struggled to win the mat winning only 4 ends, but to their credit only gave away one multiple losing by 17 shots, 5 to 22. Don Barnetson’s rink did not trouble the scorers on the first 5 ends and trailed by 7 shots. They

then won 5 of the next 6 ends including a couple of multiples to lead by 3 shots after 11 ends.

They then lost the next 4 ends to be 6 shots behind. They then picked up 5 shots on the next end and levelled the scores on the seventeenth end. However, they lost 3 of the last 4 ends to lose by 3 shots, 18 to 21.

Monbulk 2 lost overall by 39 shots, 31 to 70.

Monbulk 3 travelled to Lilydale and this turned out to be a close contest across all rinks. Graeme Seymour’s rink trailed by 5 shots after 10 ends.

They then rallied and levelled the scores by the seventeenth end, but just went down in the finish by one shot, 19 to 20.

Mike Harris’ rink picked up 5 shots on the second end to lead by 6 shots. By the tenth end, they still led by 5 shots.

They then lost the next 7 ends to fall behind by 7 shots, eventually losing by 5 shots, 19 to 24.

Ray Pike’s rink fell 7 shots behind, but by the eleventh end had reduced this to one shot. By the eighteenth end, they had moved two shots clear but lost the last three ends to go down by 2 shots, 19 to 21.

Monbulk 3 lost overall by 8 shots, 57 to 65.

Brian Smith’s rink won five of the first seven ends and led by 4 shots. They lost the next three ends but kept these to just one shot.

They then won the next 5 ends to open up a lead of ten shots and kept control to the end winning by 14 shots, 21 to 7. Karen Rice’s rink was just one shot in front after 7 ends but then won the next three ends to open up a 7 shot lead. They were able to win the majority of ends in the run home to win by 10 shots, 22 to 12.

They then turned the match around winning 5 of the next 6 ends to take the lead by one shot, with 3 ends to play. The rinks then went shot for shot over the next two ends with the Monbulk rink still holding a slender one-shot lead going into the last end.

The Monbulk rink held the shot, but this was taken away by the Ferntree Gully skip with the match finishing a draw, 19 shots each.

Calvin Connell’s rink was four shots down after 7 ends, but then levelled the match by picking up 4 shots on the eighth end and going one shot ahead on the next end. They held this lead until the fifteenth end, but then lost 3 of the next 4 ends to fall behind by 4 shots with three ends to play. They were unable to make any inroads into this margin

losing by 5 shots, 17 to 22.

Monbulk won the overall by 19 shots, 79 to 60 to make it two wins from two starts this season.

Monbulk 2 played Narre Warren at home looking to bounce back from the previous week’s defeat.

Don Barnetson’s rink was level after 4 ends but then lost the next 4 ends to trail by 4 shots. They then won 6 of the next 8 ends to have the scores tied after seventeen ends.

Even though they lost the next end by two shots they finished strongly winning the last 3 ends to win by 3 shots, 17 to 14.

Peter Lee’s rink started well and when they picked up 4 shots on the tenth end they led by 9 shots. They increased this lead by picking up a number of multiples and eventually

won by 13 shots, 27 to 14.

Graeme Goller’s rink was well placed after eleven ends leading by 3 shots. They then fell away in the second half of the game-winning just 2 of the last 10 ends to lose by 5 shots, 17 to 22.

Alan Hamilton’s rink started slowly and found themselves 7 shots down without a shot on the board after 3 ends. They then clawed their way back winning the next 7 ends to lead by two shots.

The Monbulk rink then lost the next 4 ends including a number of multiples to trail by 9 shots. They moved within 4 shots after 17 ends but were not able to further bridge the gap losing by 8 shots, 15 to 23. Monbulk was able to claim their first win of the season winning overall by 3 shots, 76 to 73.

Terry Miller from Terry Miller Concrete Tanks has been in the concrete tank building business for nearly 30 years. Being from country Victoria himself, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems.

Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because our tanks have 130mm walls and a 300mm base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days of curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo (metal) roof, concrete top or open top tanks.

The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or in fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, you will keep your home cool and wet. Or if need be, you can jump into the tank to keep cool and be protected from flames and radiant heat.
