By Callum Ludwig In a heartwarming show of friendship, Kane Williams is set to run 100km to raise awareness and support for his friend Lauren Sneddon.

Ms Sneddon, aged only 34, is a Wandin East mum of two and was diagnosed with RRMS, relapse-remitting multiple sclerosis, which results in unexpected ‘attacks’ and periods of ‘recovery’ and remission afterwards.

Ms Sneddon said it all started in early September 2021 when she began to suffer from a significant migraine that left her bedridden for a week.

“From there, it was clear things weren’t getting better. My husband encouraged me to sit up and eat and when I did so, I lost all vision in my left eye. I had no spatial awareness, I was reaching for a water bottle and was 30 centimetres away. I lost my ability to speak properly, I was slurring my speech and impaired to the degree you couldn’t understand me,” she said.

“I went to the hospital and was treated with steroids for severe migraine, did a CT scan but unfortunately in that first visit, they didn’t give me an MRI. I was released after a week and was picking up my kids from daycare and after all of half an hour at home, my symptoms got much worse.”

Groups join the call

By Renee Wood Healesville community groups are throwing their support behind Services for Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG), urging the state health minister to establish an Urgent Care Centre locally.

The groups are advocating to the minister’s office to add weight to the community’s needs and desires for a facility.

The Healesville Rotary Club Board said, “Healesville is a crucial location for delivery of urgent care services.”

The Lions Club wrote in its letter to the minister’s office that it believes this issue needs to be addressed and rectified.

“We wish to formally express our belief that an Urgent Care facility is an essential service for Healesville and surrounding communities, and urge that such a facility, based at Healesville Hospital, be authorised and implemented,“ Gary Butler Club Secretary, Healesville Lions Club wrote.

Healesville Action Group (HAG) and Healesville U3A also advocate for the establishment.

“Maroondah is too far to seek urgent treatment and the emergency facility there is overloaded with long delays for treatment, it makes so much sense to have this facility here, to improve the outcomes for this community,” HAG said.

It will be an item for discussion at the next Healesville U3A meeting as the committee believes it is an important issue for the community and they would like to support the needs of retirees and seniors in the community.

Another letter of support will be sent from Mayor Jim Child after Councillor Fiona McAllister requested this, raising the item through the chair at the Tuesday 11 October Council Meeting.

There’s hope an urgent care centre would be established at Healesville Hospital and Yarra Valley Health.

Cr McAllister highlighted the needs for the 30,000 plus population locally and surrounding and the influx of six million visitors to the valleys.

“The fact that it takes nearly an hour to travel to the nearest urgent care or emergency services - you can start to see the logic for urgent care,” Cr McAllister said.

SHHAG Chairperson Jane Judd said the committee welcomes and thanks the community for its support over the ten year campaign for better services which first started in December 2012.

“This has been community speaking up for 10 years and I’m grateful to everyone who’s followed the issues and helped support us and workers services to the hospital. It’s just been a sensation,” Ms Judd said.

The issue has been gaining traction after the

State Government announced 25 Urgent Care Service Centres would be delivered across the state.

Ten locations are yet to be determined, with SHHAG recently meeting with the minister’s office to advocate for Healesville to be named in the next roll out.

Ms Judd said the meeting was successful and they were able to deliver the seven key reasons behind the need which included health disadvantages, Healesville being a rural environment, high population demographics and the town having high health needs.

Ms Judd is also encouraged that following this meeting, a member of the Department of Health made contact and is interested in speaking with Ms Judd to hear of the community’s concerns and needs for services in the area.

Forest shut to cars due to bridge works Locals and visitors will not have access to the Redwoods Forest in Warburton as Cement Creek Bridge Road will be closed while Council performs necessary bridge upgrade works to Cement Creek Bridge.

It is expected that access will be closed from Monday 17 October to late December while construction to replace the existing bridge deck takes place.

The forest will still be able to be accessed by bike or on foot via the O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail, with variable message signs (VMS) in place to notify motorists of the works.

The upgrades will provide improved safety for visitors to the forest by increasing the load capacity of the bridge, as well as the addition of a new accessway for pedestrians alongside the bridge.

The $1.3 million project is being funded by the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program, Bridge Renewal Program,

Yarra Ranges Mayor and O’Shannassy Ward Councillor, Jim Child, said that the

upgrades were required to ensure ongoing community safety when visiting the Redwoods Forest.

“The Redwoods Forest is one of the most visited locations in our municipality, so having the bridge upgraded to accommodate the increased traffic to the area is a necessity,” Cr Child said.

“The closure is obviously going to cause some disruption to the usual method that locals and visitors would use to visit the Redwoods, but it’s a necessary measure we need to take to ensure the upgrades are completed as efficiently and safely as possible.”

Following the upgrade to the bridge, Parks Victoria are also planning improvements to the Redwoods Forest to enhance the visitor experience and protect the forest’s unique natural and cultural values.

Victorian Government’s flood recovery A $351 million package has been announced by the Victorian Government to give communities the immediate support they need as the state’s recovery from the floods begins.

A $165 million emergency road repair blitz is underway to begin finding and fixing potholes, asphalting and repairing road surfaces damaged by the recent weather event to get Victorians in flood-affected areas back on the road. The package will also cover larger-scale works like the rebuilding of roads, bridges and culverts.

Up to $15 million will deliver support for the most-affected Victorians with housing, health and wellbeing, financial and legal counselling alongside practical assistance with accessing grants and completing paperwork, and advice for business owners whose livelihoods have been affected by the floods. $6 million will station Community Recovery Officers in affected LGAs to help identify the recovery needs of individuals and families – making sure communities are getting appropriate support for their unique requirements, and support government to identify if any further support is needed.

Up to $15 million will be dedicated to boosting the capability of Emergency Management Victoria, the State Control Centre and Emergency Response Victoria – organisations that play a critical role in coordinating emergency responses and helping the recovery from disasters like floods.

Since the beginning of the flood emergency, 509 roads have been closed, with 150 already reopened. Where water levels have subsided to safe levels and emergency services deem it safe to do so, crews are working around the clock to restore access.

In just a few days, hundreds of crews have already undertaken more than 500 individual inspections, found and fixed 10,000 potholes and attended more than 20 landslips right across Victoria.

Downpour in Upper Yarra

By Callum Ludwig The Upper Yarra did not escape the wrath of the weather on Thursday 13 October, with a number of road closures, damage and floods.

The bridge over Parslows Road in Yellingbo was completely flooded, resulting in the road being closed to drivers.

Community Safety Coordinator at Yellingbo CFA Jo Hardy said it was also flooded on nearby Macclesfield Road.

“There’s a lot of rapids coming from the creek, and they are pretty strong but there’s still a lot of people trying to drive through the floodwaters and it’s really annoying when we are retying to keep the public safe,” she said.

“We have signs out stating that there is water over the road and that it is closed. We ask people to just abide by the signs and not try to drive through because it is very dangerous.”

Signs were put up over the night of Thursday 13 October. Water partially covered Parslows Road at around 7am the morning of Friday 14 October, and the road was engulfed by 12pm.

Ms Hardy said drivers who would’ve planned to use Parslows Road should use Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and head to the Warburton Highway to go around.

“About 12 years ago, we had really bad flooding in Yellingbo like this, and we had a car actually bobbing down the river after getting caught in the floodwaters,” she said.

“I watched a person this morning trying to get through, and about halfway through his car started skidding and he just made it to the other side of the river in his small four-wheel drive. His face just showed ‘Oh thank God I

By Saturday 15 October, water has receded from the road but was still high on the road edges and some branches and debris were sticking out.

Drummond, Station and Seymour streets in Seville and Glenview Road, Mathers and Deans Road, Corduroy and Settlement roads in Launching Place, Donna Buang Road from Ben Cairn Road to Donna Buang Summit Road in Warburton and Ewen Road in Yellingbo were also closed due to flooding.

The consistent concerns over potholes on the Warburton Highway have also reemerged as they were affected by the rain, with a large one forming between Wandin and Seville.

If it’s flooded - forget it

By Renee Wood and Mikayla van Loon Several roads were flooded and road closures were put in place to ensure the safety of residents in the Yarra Valley following the down pour received on Thursday 13 October.

The Yarra Glen and Yering area was affected making it difficult for drivers to get in and out with the Melba Highway, MacIntyre Lane, St Huberts Road and Healesville-Yarra Glen Road closed for periods of time.

Police and Yarra Ranges Council workers were monitoring and guiding traffic accordingly allowing for safe crossing as the water eased throughout the morning.

Coldstream roads such as Station Street were also inundated by water but that subsided by Friday morning.

Healesville also saw several roads flooded,

including River Street.

Melba Highway was again closed over the weekend with traffic being diverted with the threat of flooded roads still an ongoing issue for the region.

Drivers are urged to take care and monitor the conditions and remember driving on flooded roads can pose a risk to your safety and vehicle damage.

Many pot holes are also appearing as the surfaces have deteriorated from the water.

VicEmergency issued Moderate Flood Warnings of Watch and Act alerts however, they have now been downgraded to a minor flood warning.

The Yarra River catchment recorded rainfall averaging about 49mm in the upper part and 46mm in the lower part since 9am Wednesday 12 October.

Ms Sneddon said it is a very different experience to have so much support made for her.

I’ve definitely had to lean into the support that I’ve gotten and accept it,” she said.

In the 5 months following her hospitalisation, she underwent 2 lumber punctures, 3 CT scans, 4 MRIs and 10 blood tests before being diagnosed on 23 March 2022.

Ms Sneddon said the disease moved rapidly.

“In January I had another MRI and was told in the three months between the MRIs I’d incurred a further 12 lesions on my brain. Since then, there have been some issues in just in terms of my ability to do things day to day. I have limited use of my hands, I can’t pick up my kids properly and the fatigue is significant,” she said.

“I also have a constant feeling of bugs crawling down my back, which is a common MS symptom, the little things like a particular symptom called MS hugs, which is pain and tightening around your torso.”

If allowed to keep deteriorating, MS patients like Ms Sneddon can end up with symptoms from attacks being left permanent. Due to her fears regarding trying to raise her children in a wheelchair or with other ailments, Ms Sneddon applied and was accepted for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) at a clinic in Monterrey, Mexico. HSCT is available for MS patients in Australia but under very strict circumstances and Ms Sneddon is worried about letting her health reduce to the point she is eligible in Australia.

A Wandin East mum of two has been struck with the devastating diagnosis of the chronic neurological disease Multiple Sclerosis, or MS. Lauren Sneddon, at the age of only 34, was diagnosed with RRMS, relapse-remitting multiple sclerosis which results in unexpected ‘attacks’ and periods of ‘recovery’ and remission afterwards.

A good friend, Kane Williams, is set to run 100km to raise awareness and support for her.

Ms Sneddon said she met Mr Williams through her lifelong friend Kim, who she befriended in Year 9.

“She transferred to the same school as I and I remember distinctly that we were in a graphic class and started talking about Big Brother, which was the first ever Big Brother here in Australia, which is how we bonded,” she said.

“She became my best friend through high school and beyond, and she met Kane in Daisy’s nightclub back in the day and now he and I are good friends and he is good friends with my husband too and our kids are fairly close too. She was my bridesmaid and I was hers,” she said.

“I was very overwhelmed by his proposal, especially as I like to work out but am not much of a runner, so for me the idea that he would do something so impactful on his body, spending 12 hours straight running is a testament to the very thoughtful and caring person he is.”

In MS, the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks and damages the fatty material – called myelin – around the nerves. This results in a process called demyelination where patches of nerves become exposed and then scarred, which renders the nerves unable to communicate messages properly and at risk of further degeneration.

Council shares priorities

By Mikayla van Loon Yarra Ranges Council hosted an advocacy breakfast on Tuesday 11 October where local State election candidates could hear about what the council’s priorities were leading into November.

Both sides of the political spectrum were represented with Labor’s Evelyn candidate Lorna Dent and Monbulk’s Daniela De Martino there and Liberal candidate for Evelyn Bridget Vallence and Monbulk’s Gareth Ward joining the session. Eildon has not yet had a Labor candidate announced, seeing only Liberal member Cindy McLeish in attendance.

Mayor Jim Child said the document the council produced indicated not only what councillors and council officers see as the priorities but was a reflection of what the community needs.

“Our agenda is much more than a document of a list of projects. It’s quite easy to draw up a list of projects and wants to lead into an election. I’ve been down that trail before but here at Yarra Ranges, we’ve done it differently, and it reflects the priorities of our community,” he said.

“The projects that we’ve identified are ones that will strengthen our region’s livability, resilience and capacity and contribute to the state economy well into the future.”

Some items raised were the Ridges and Rivers development, telecommunications, roads and natural disaster preparedness.

Sports and recreation spaces fit for the entire community was also a big item on the agenda, whether that be as a gathering point after a storm event or all inclusive facilities for different genders and abilities.

“When disaster hits our communities, these are the places that people naturally gather to take shelter and support one another as such important facilities,” Cr Child said.

“They also become incredibly valuable spaces for support services to utilise, so it’s critical that we have facilities that are fit for diverse uses and purposes.”

The message of storm recovery support was heard loud and clear, making up a large part of the council’s agenda, including a greening suburbs initiative to plant what was lost.

Yarra Ranges Council staff, councillors and State candidates joined for an advocacy breakfast briefing hosted by the council about its priorities coming in the election.

Picture: MIKAYLA VAN LOON “That devastating storm affected thousands in the era and is causing significant damage to the landscape and built environment. It also left a mark on our community with many suffering significant trauma, and that trauma continues.”

Cr Child said “a $19 million gap” in funding still remains for the council in achieving the storm recovery plan it has set out but these types of events could potentially happen more often so a long term plan needs to be devised.

“We live in an environment that is incident, disaster prone and that’s why we have to build resilience within our communities,” he said.

Three major projects have been raised for Lilydale alone, with the bypass, rail duplication and support for the Lilydale Youth Hub all making it to the council’s agenda.

“It’s time something was done. It is the gateway to the Yarra Valley and the Warburton Valley and it should be recognised as such,” Cr Child said.

Having endorsed the Lilydale Structure Plan just months ago, advocating for these infrastructure projects, Cr Child said was the next step in achieving these outcomes for the town.

The final item identified as a key priority for the council was the peri-regional classification to allow the Yarra Ranges to apply for both metropolitan and regional funding opportunities.

“We have the vision, ambition and capacity to submit Yarra Ranges as the best place to live, work and visit but we can only deliver this vision by working with the Victorian govern-

ment,” Cr Child said.

Evelyn Labor and Liberal candidates Lorna Dent and Bridget Vallence respectively said it was great to have all candidates in one room to hear what matters to the local people and council.

“I’m appreciative as a candidate because they’ve laid the groundwork for what we can take and really promote and try to champion for. There’s lots of good opportunities here,” Ms Dent said.

“Yarra Ranges Council putting on this event for all the candidates demonstrates how connected they are to the community and how passionate they are about making the Yarra Ranges the best it can be,” Ms Vallence said.

By Callum Ludwig A pair of important community roads that service the Seville Primary School are set to be resurfaced soon under the Yarra Ranges Council’s Roads for Community Initiative, as discussed in the Tuesday 11 October Council meeting.

A contractor has been approved from seven submissions based on a weighted ability to deliver the project in regards to price (80 per cent), capability and capacity (5 per cent), timeframes (10 per cent) and a commitment to quality and sustainability (5 per cent).

Chandler Ward Councillor David Eastham forwarded the motion, which was seconded

by Councillor Tim Heenan, and he said while the Council does get a number of special charges motions, the significance of this one is clear in the name.

“It’s important to call out as the name suggests, it is School Road. Part of the prioritisation process when the Council put forward the list of roads to the Federal Government was around safety. This road does run right adjacent to the school and the community house, it’s quite an active area,” he said.

“School Road and Valley Road are some of the very few left in that precinct that haven’t been sealed. This one will help with a lot of drainage issues as well so it’s great to see this one getting to this stage and being awarded.”

Works are anticipated to commence this month and are expected to reach practical completion by 30 June 2023.

The proposed works will require the removal of 14 native trees and 4 exotic trees, but will significantly reduce dust in the area.

Manager Sonja Mazar said it will be a great afternoon filled with plenty of free activities for the kids.

“These events are extremely important because so many people are stuck in routines and haven’t had the opportunity to go outside of that. It’s a valuable service that we are offering in something that’s free to the whole community.”

Alongside the circus workshops, there will be market stalls, performers, a sausage sizzle, an art class from 4pm to 5pm, a free raffle with prizes every hour and other children’s activities.

The event is in a prime location for Woori

Yallock Primary School students and their families, only a short walk from the school to the carpark at 1385 Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road, Woori Yallock, but all kids from the Upper Yarra are welcome.

Ms Mazar said Woori Yallock is a popular and ideal area for young families.

“At the moment, we are seeing a different demographic in this area, with a lot of young families who might have been here for a couple of years, but who really don’t have a connection with the community because of lockdowns,” she said.

“This will be a really good way to get out and make that connection. Woori Yallock is an attractive town because we are not too far from main services but is also affordable for families and younger buyers.”

The event runs from 3pm to 6pm on Thursday 27 October.

Great return for field day

Wandin Silvan Field Days was back with clouds parting and the sun shining to welcome the first visitors for the first time in three years.

Despite heavy rains on Thursday 13 October leaving the ground a bit soft and muddy underfoot, any poor weather held off for the two-day event.

Vice President of the Wandin Silvan Field Days Committee Casey Kosterman said it was great to be back with a good turnout of spectators and trade stores.

“The weather has been in our favour today, so there is a bit of excitement and buzz in the air, everyone’s really keen to get back out there and start promoting their equipment and their services,” he said.

“It was a lot of work putting the event together, getting people back in the rhythm of doing field days and all that sort of thing.

We’ve all pulled together as a committee and the community really stepped up and made it happen.”

The weather, unfortunately, resulted in a few traders, particularly coming from along the Melba Highway in Yarra Glen or Yea, being blocked from attending to their set-up sites on Friday 14 October due to road closures.

Mr Kosterman said between the weather and Covid concerns they were a few attendees who had to pull out.

“We’ve had a couple of them who were keen to come out and who do so all the time who have had to miss out. It is disappointing for us and disappointing for them,” he said.

“Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do, Mother Nature is Mother Nature. Wednesday, and Thursday, the weather wasn’t looking great but it looks like we just got the tail end of it all and hopefully it holds off for another day so it is smooth sailing.”

Wide range of exhibitors

By Callum Ludwig A unique display of wares, trades and businesses was out on show at the Wandin Silvan Field Days.

Everything from agribusiness tools, machines and vehicles, cars, pool heating, beds, plants, emergency services and even snakes!

Co-owner of Home Gardening products business Biolink Kevin Beecroft said the Wandin Silvan Field Days were a great opportunity to put themselves out there.

“You can put products out there that are new or a little bit different, that’s where we’ve come into it, with our products are able to use for conventional or organic agriculture. We want agriculture to be sustainable into the future, not only from a nutritional point of view, but we’ve got to be able to have soils here for hundreds and hundreds of years,” he said.

Biolink was founded in the last 10 years by Kevin and his wife Lisa, alongside fellow organic dairy farmers Graham and Melissa Clay to provide a microbial-based range of natural fertilisers, soil stimulants, and animal probiotics.

Yarra Valley Gas owner Michael Alexandrou was also in attendance to proudly showcase the 100 per cent locally owned and operated independent business.

“We buy direct from our suppliers, there’s no more middleman to what we do in order to support locals with LPG, industrial gases, barbecue bottles, bulk bottles, everything,” he said.

“We were first here five to six years ago, unsure what to expect and we got so much out of it to the point two of us are now Committee Members. Tomorrow [Saturday 15 October], we will get absolutely smashed, people are hanging out to get out to every live event.

People will come and ask others what they do, we’ve been around since 1975 and I just had a gentleman say he only found out about us in the paper this week.”

Yarra Valley Gas is known in the community for ‘Stanley’, a free portable BBQ trailer loaned out to charity events.

The Ranges Tec College was represented by Maintenance Manager and teaching Assistant Russell Knoll, with a range of plants available that were grown by students.

“We have a farm in Monbulk, where students are involved in the process of propagation, growing cuttings, growing plants by seed, growing them on putting them up fertilisation, learning about spraying, learning about different weeds, and all the processes that are involved in, in horticulture,” he said.

“We also set them up on our work placement to get experience in their field. Ranges Tec was established because we recognised that there was a need within schools to offer a different kind of learning programme, a different way of learning to allow these students to realise their intelligence is much more handson and practical, maybe going from someone who doubts themselves to blossoming in a learning environment.”

As well as horticulture, Ranges Tec also offers hospitality, engineering, furniture-making electro-technology and building and construction courses.

“We do wildlife conservation education throughout the whole of Victoria. As well as snake catching, we’ve got breeding programmes for endangered species like bandicoots, bettongs, curlews and gliders and work with lots of other species. We have about 400 native animals at our private zoo in East Warburton,” he said.

“Knowledge of snake safety can literally save people’s lives but the most important thing is that we leave them alone. People do all sorts of things to snakes that if you did to a koala for example would cause an uproar, and think it is okay but they are just as important to the environment, probably more of a contribution to the ecosystem than a koala.”

Mr Alexander performed a 40-minute show from 10.30am where he showed and spoke about a range of snakes including a copperhead, tiger snake, red-belly black snake, eastern brown snake and mulga snake. Blacksnake Productions was founded by Mr Alexander in 2006 after he learnt his skills volunteering at Healesville Sanctuary and working at The Australian Reptile Park and Melbourne Zoo.

Honouring Howard Jones

By Renee Wood Healesville Primary School held a special ceremony on Friday 14 October for the naming of the school’s hall in honour of late principal Howard Jones.

Mr Jones was a well-respected and muchloved principal who led the school in his position from 1997 to 2008 when he retired.

Sadly he died in 2020 and to honour his legacy and all he achieved; the school hall has now been unveiled as the Howard Jones Hall.

The fitting tribute comes after Mr Jones fought tirelessly to get major funding for the school’s strategic plan after a devastating fire destroyed a historic school building in 2000 which housed several classrooms.

Past Deputy Principal Rod Hysted worked alongside Mr Jones and said he truly cared about the school and welfare of all students, teachers and parents.

“Howard was a wonderful man, a man of compassion and a man of real vision,” Mr Hysted said.

From the time he began as principal, Mr Jones pushed to bring forward a positive future for the school and its students by delivering the strategic plan.

Following the fire, this was something that needed to be delivered immediately and the battle for funding and works began.

Mr Jones lobbied government to get funding to see works commence and was instrumental in seeing a new hall built, knocking back the idea that a ‘multi-purpose classroom’ was all that was needed.

“His love for the kids flowed to the wonderful staff and parents and families and students at the school and he wanted Healesville Primary School to be the best possible school,” Mr Hysted said.

Past student Nelson Aldridge shared his respect and admiration for Mr Jones, which so many other students shared, and said diversity, inclusion and respecting others were his values which are still present today.

“As an indigenous student, Howard made sure that myself and other indigenous students had the chance to connect to culture and have every opportunity to engage in cultural activities,” Mr Aldridge said.

Mr Jones’ family, Sheree, Damian and Troy Jones attended for the occasion to unveil the sign in honour of their husband and father. “it’s an amazing tribute to Howard and we just think it’s wonderful that the school has thought to do that,” Ms Jones said.

The sign is detailed and shares the story of Mr Jones’ time there so that students for generations to come will know of his great efforts and why his legacy is so important.

Wandin Yallock Primary School prepares for 150 years

By Callum Ludwig The historic Wandin Yallock Primary School (WYPS) is set to celebrate their belated birthday on Saturday 5 November, recognising 150 (plus 2!) years of history.

The initial anniversary was delayed due to Covid over the last two years but finally, the school community will be able to gather for the occasion.

Nicole Hartley WYPS Council President Nicole Hartley said they are keeping it simple for the event, a nostalgic nod to the school’s history.

“We are putting on a Devonshire Tea with scones and all sorts, welcoming all members of the community. We’ve reached out to past students and staff from across the state, with some even set to come down from as far as Wodonga and Wangaratta,” she said.

“We’re also working closely with the Mont de Lancey Historic Homestead to pull out as much of our historical memorabilia over the last 150 years and to turn our old schoolhouse into a makeshift museum, broken up into 10-year blocks.”

The event will be held from 1pm to 4pm and will also mark the official opening of the newly restored Jubilee gates.

Ms Hartley said for whatever reason, the school has a way of dining its way into the soul of those who have passed through it.

Wandin Yallock Primary School is celebrating its 150th year in November.

“I don’t know what it is about our school but it just captures you. It puts his arms around you and it gives you a hug and it makes you feel at home,” she said.

“We have staff who attended as students who have come back to teach and we’ve got parents like me, my boys are second-generation Wandin Yallock kids, multi-generational

families who keep coming back through the school. We just have this connection to the school and to each other.”

There will be an opportunity for attendees to write about their experiences or memories of the school in a collective book on the day, or they can reach out and write in it earlier.

Ms Hartley said the only way that the his-

tory of the school stays alive is if we continue to pass on our stories and our memories to future generations.

“A massive part of it is sharing our stories and memories so that our kids can then continue that legacy on through their children.

My boys may choose to send their kids to school in the future, you never know. 150 years of history is pretty incredible,” she said.

“I’ve got no doubt in my mind that the school is on an upward trajectory, our numbers have been steadily growing over the last seven years since I’ve been back at the school. I definitely think that our school will continue on its journey.”

First festival in person

By Callum Ludwig Warburton Environment’s Tall Trees Festival is set for its first in-person event on Friday 21 October since it was established in 2020.

Held online, musicians, artists, scientists and speakers are set to unite at the Yarra Valley ECOSS site to celebrate music and the beauty of our forests.

President of Warburton Environment Nic Fox said the initiative began to fundraise for Warburton Environment’s Supreme Court case against VicForests.

“Our aim is to protect the tall trees of the Central Highlands, the mountain ash forests, which are a critically endangered ecosystem.

The Tall Trees Festival was a great opportunity to raise funds and create some engagement with the community,” she said.

“It was meant to be a live festival, but Covid hit us and we went online. After having no idea what we were doing the first time, the second was incredibly successful. We still have some expenses coming up from the trial, so we are still needing to raise some funds.”

The festival will run alongside the regular Valley Market from 4pm to 10pm with a number of food vans and stalls.

Ms Fox said more than anything, they are really looking forward to having a live event this year, getting all the community together and having a good dance and a lot of fun.

“We are so excited, it can’t come quick enough. It will be good before the State Election for showing what Warburton Environment stand for too. The event has been a community mobilisation over the last couple of years,” she said.

“Bringing people together during Covid was also really beneficial. We were all going through some pretty hard times, so to have some music coming through to them at home, people were very grateful for that. It’s been a wonderful experience in many ways.”

Nicki Bomba is headlining the Tall Trees Festival.

The lineup is headlined by ARIA Awardwinning Melbourne Ska Orchestra musician and singer-songwriter Nicki Bomba, who was also the former drummer and percussionist of John Butler Trio.

He is being joined by South Australian folk artist Loren Kate, 2020 Archie Roach Foundation Award winner Kee’Ahn, local Warburton exotic grunge band Sooty Owls and more.

Dreaming Space will also be providing children’s entertainment.

Aunty Kim Wandin will conduct the Welcome to Country for the donation-entry event.

Signs voice for Wurundjeri Five new interpretive signs using Woiwurrung language have been installed along the Lilydale to Warburton Trail to connect community to Wurundjeri culture and language.

The signs featuring text, images and audio were developed by Yarra Ranges Council in consultation with Wurundjeri woman, Brooke Wandin as a way to tell Wurundjeri stories in their own tongue and to promote and preserve the Woiwurrung language.

Both Wurundjeri women, Mandy Nicholson and Brooke Wandin contributed voiceovers for some of the signs and Brooke said they have been designed to bring Woiwurrung language into the fabric of Yarra Ranges communities.

“Our language holds a lot of information about the past and is extremely important because it carries more than just words, but also law, family, connection to country, dance, and song.”

“All Victorian Indigenous languages are endangered and run the risk of vanishing, so hopefully these signs will help to raise awareness and peak people’s curiosity that they might go find out more about our language themselves.”

The audio signs which are also solar powered have been designed to be easily

accessible with an interactive audio push button delivering pre-recorded stories, songs and language in the Woiwurrung language.

Located along the Warburton Rail trail, these signs are in Woori Yallock, Launching Place, and Mount Evelyn.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor, Jim Child said these signs highlight and bring to life Wurundjeri histories and stories.

“These signs are not only a great addition to the trail, but an insight of some of our land’s most ancient and important stories, giving trail users a special opportunity to learn about Wurundjeri culture and the Woiwurrung language in a beautiful natural environment and in a very accessible way.

“The five interpretive signs bring local stories to interpret and strengthen our connection to the original custodians of this land and their rich cultural heritage and spiritual connection to this land.”

“We’re extremely grateful for the advice and support from Wurundjeri women Brooke Wandin and Mandy Nicholson whose knowledge of the Woiwurrung language and contribution to this project will hopefully bring more attention to the Woiwurrung language and assist in its revitalisation.”

How to help local youth

By Mikayla van Loon Discussions around youth mental health and how best to approach those conversations was the theme of the day at the Lilydale Youth Hub’s mental health forum.

Held on Sunday 9 October, the Hub brought together members of the consortium’s team, as well as young people to talk all things mental health support.

Inspiro CEO Sue Sestan opened the session speaking of the unique structure of the Hub combining the expertise of five different Yarra Ranges services.

“The Lilydale Hub would not have achieved the remarkable impact that it has to date if it wasn’t for the combined efforts of our organisations and our staff,” she said.

While a positive day for youth mental health discussions, the overshadowing of a lack of State or Federal government funding to continue the service did appear throughout the discussions.

“The hub closing in 2022 at the end of December would be a huge loss for the community and a significant waste of resources given we are fully operational and have capacity right now to keep delivering services,” Sue said.

The Hub has decided to close referrals to use the service on 1 November, with the vision of the 31 December closure date.

Sue touched on the absolute need for mental health services to be increasing in the Yarra Ranges area, not decreasing, by sharing some statistics released in the 2021 Census.

There are 26,000 young people in the shire and 13.3 per cent of 13-25 year olds identified as having a mental health condition, while the Yarra Ranges ranked the seventh highest in all residents reporting a mental health condition.

This, for Sue, showed the importance of such services in the region and said it’s “telling us there is a lot of work ahead of us”.

Hearing from the young people themselves and giving them a voice was a key part of the forum.

“I think what is really underestimated is that youth voice because we make assumptions about what young people need,” Sue said.

the way young people speak about mental health issues, taking on an almost ‘joking’ dialogue.

Having an open and safe space for young people to go to where they can discuss the things they see online was something Jol suggested as being the best solution to this larger problem.

Stigma around mental health was also discussed frequently at the forum, with both Jol and Yashna suggesting young people often don’t feel worthy of support, that perhaps there are others who need help more than them.

“I think the biggest thing in all these mental health discussions is stigma. If you can get rid of some of the stigma around mental health support then even the kids who feel like ‘there are more people more deserving of this than me’ are more likely to reach out for help anyway,” Jol said.

“Because of that added barrier of stigma they feel like it’s an extra layer they have to fight through to be able to get mental health support.”

This led the discussion to the generational differences between parents/caregivers and

children, with Jol saying that if parents were to share their own mental health struggles would open the dialogue and that sharing stories may be more beneficial.

“We at the hub have a saying ‘there is strength in vulnerability’ and I think young people with needing to feel connected, this could be a way for parents, caregivers and young people to connect and show strength in vulnerability,” Yashna said.

“I think young people often feel like they may not be able to connect because maybe they aren’t aware of parents’ mental health struggles or caregiver mental health struggles and they might not get it.”

Starting these discussions and the opportunity to share stories was one of the aims of the Youth Hub in hosting this event, as well as passing on important messages or teachings about mental health support.

“We thank everyone who attended or watched the live-stream. The more the community comes together to have these kinds of discussions, the more we can provide better support to young people when they need it,” the Youth Hub team said.

Giving that youth voice was Year 10 student Jol, who was accompanied by the Hub’s youth engagement officer Yashna Poorun.

Answering a series of questions, Jol was very open about the current mental health perspective being adopted by young people and the experiences they are facing.

Although Jol said it was hard to pinpoint where young people are at with mental health because it is such a broad topic, he was able to give an overview of how the pandemic impacted many of his friends.

“Young people are struggling with increased feelings of depression and anxiety and also not being able to connect with other people socially because of the lockdowns,” he said.

Returning from the pandemic lockdowns, Jol said even he, someone who is an extrovert, struggled with social anxiety and being unable to hold conversations in person.

Coldstream Fire Brigade to hold new station open day

By Renee Wood The community is invited to join the Coldstream Fire Brigade for the new station’s open day being held on Sunday 23 October.

The Coldstream crew moved into the site earlier this year and would like the opportunity to introduce locals to the facilities.

The fire brigade has a long history of supporting the region after the first station opened on Killara Road in 1965.

As the years went by, the brigade continued to build new areas at the old site to accommodate the needs and trucks however, they quickly outgrew the area and the desire for the new station arose.

The CFA first bought the land for the new station 12 years ago and the brigade are now celebrating the completion of the project.

Captain Sean Bethell said the move has provided plenty of room to grow with space for their trucks, better safety during turnouts plus more training and meeting areas.

“It’s also given us good accessibility onto the road, rather than being so close to the highway, but also being next to the brewery we’re far enough away that their patrons don’t use that car park,” Cpt Bethell said.

The Coldstream Primary School will be running a sausage sizzle fundraiser on the day and there will be activities for children to enjoy.

Anyone interested in recruiting is also encouraged to attend to meet other members and learn more about volunteering.

By Callum Ludwig A brave bunch of conservationists were unphased by the poor weather, committed to their cause rain, hail or shine.

Zoos Victoria staff and Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater (FoHH) volunteers teamed up to begin planting new vegetation for the Burrungma Biik site at the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area.

Environmental Coordinator of Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater Eliza Lamb said they rely heavily on volunteer support to achieve what they do.

“We need volunteers to come and help us with these kinds of events and to get plants in the ground, otherwise we couldn’t do what we do,” she said.

“It’s wonderful also that we can have Zoos Victoria staff coming out and joining us at Yellingbo because they’ve worked on their Totes for Wildlife program where we’re getting this funding to plant these trees and it’s great they can see the full circle of where the money is going.”

Zoos Victoria’s Totes for Wildlife program identifies a local threatened species each year and raises funds for vital conservation projects to protect them through the sale of themed tote bags.

Zoos Victoria Conservation Campaigner Estelle Van Hoeydonck said they were able to sell 10,000 bags for the Helmeted Honeyeater over 2020-21.

“Those bag sales were able to have 10,000 plants during the day I’m here at Yellingbo to support Helmeted Honeyeaters,” she said.

“We’re very excited that by having our zoo members and visitors interested in contributing by buying a bag we’re able to directly have an impact on the Helmeted Honeyeater, with the help of the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater.”

10,000 plants and funding for weed management are being dedicated to reinstating swampy riparian woodland at the site this year. The first 4000 plants were planted in September, supplied by the FoHH Indigenous nursery, and made possible by the efforts of staff and volunteers.

Ms Lamb said the hope is that the site will be a future release site for both the Helmeted Honeyeater and Leadbeater’s Possum.

“Both species are critically endangered and they need more space for additional populations in order for both species to survive and thrive,” she said.

“We’re planting this sight out with species that are crucial to their habitat and we hope to have Helmeted Honeyeaters breeding in those sites after four years.”

Burrungma Biik means ‘misty lands’ in the Woiwurrung language and the name was given to the site by Wurrundjeri Elder Aunty Gail Smith. The 2.3-hectare site was added to the 14 MAIL

Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area through the combined efforts of Trust for Nature, FoHH and the Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (which have since integrated into Melbourne Water) in 2017.

Ms Lamb said this kind of change can’t be done without community support.

“It’s really great having school groups and different community groups coming out onto site and working with us and taking that message back to their communities and their social networks,” she said.

“School groups have been so passionate about supporting the threatened species and doing what they can to get out and then spread that message to their peers and to their families and to their local community. Since the acquisition of the site, a further

1.2 hectares were included in the Burrungma Biik restoration project with FoHH together with Parks Victoria and Yarra4life undertaking habitat restoration works with around 51,000 plants being put into the area before Covid.

Since the easing of the pandemic, over 7000 plants have been added into this space in the last 6 months.

Ms Van Hoeydonck said through Totes for Wildlife, Zoos Victoria hopes not only to have a biological impact but a human one.

“We’re always trying to encourage people to have increased care and recognition of our local threatened species. As a result of Totes for Wildlife, we saw a 16 per cent increase in recognition and care for the Helmeted Honeyeater throughout our zoo populations, which is great,” she said.

“We’ve currently got a new tote bag, highlighting the Golden-rayed Blue butterfly, which is another threatened species.”

The Greens have selected the Lead Greens Northern Region Candidate for the Upper House with Castlemaine resident Cate Sinclair to be first on the ballot box.

The northern victorian representative will look over a vast area as far as Mildura right down through to Healesville and Warburton.

Dr Sinclair said although it’s a vast area the key issues in need of addressing run parallel such as housing, mental health and building stronger communities.

“That starts with secure housing for people and also looking at cost of living and wages, particularly for women working in the community sectors, I think a really important aspect of caring for families is making sure that people have a living wage and that’s something that hasn’t been maintained,” Dr Sinclair said Dr Sinclair said rents skyrocketing, holiday rentals, and an influx of city residents to these areas have affected the property market.

“We’ve got people who are living in tents and have no access to housing at all. And that’s right throughout the northern region, but also in the city.”

If elected, these are the key issues Dr Sinclair would lobby for as well as climate action and concerns of logging.

“Logging is something that’s really important for the areas in around Healesville as well and Warburton… logging is an issue that’s very important to a lot of local people and we need to stop logging by 2023.”

The candidate has worked as a health clinician for over 30 years and is also a health researcher.

After seeing a rise in children and adolescent distress and mental health conditions, Dr Sinclair wanted to do something more broadly to prevent some of the conditions affecting children, which led her aspiration in representing the community in the state government.

Dr Sinclair said her values strongly align with the Greens’ policies as someone who’s always been very passionate about the environment and is concerned that climate action.

“We need to preserve our natural environment and live with it rather than using it as a resource.”

A postcard delivery The society recently received a wonderful collection of early coloured postcards of Lilydale dating around 1910.

Thankfully, a couple of the postcards had a note written in the back which changed the story from being locally significant to being internationally significant.

The postcard with the caption Shire buildings Lilydale featured the former Lillydale Shire Offices and the Athenaeum Hall. In front of the hall was a large car to the left was a group of people and to the right the members of the Lilydale Brass Band.

It was not until I turned the postcard over and read the note that it was in fact Madame Melba visiting the hall. The question then became: when was it and for what event? Knowing Melba did not return to Australia until 1902 and working on the 1910 date, I turned

Several concerts were given in that time but only one was in the daytime and for that event Melba motored up from Melbourne. We can now give the exact date of that postcard as I now know that the image was September

25, 1907 and the occasion was Melba opening the Lilydale Brass Band’s Bazaar. The Lilydale Express of September 27, 1907 noted the bazaar which was held over two days raised £80 ($160) which was a lot of money for that time.

Interestingly, Miss Jessie Tait presented Melba with a basket of flowers. After the opening, in typical style, Melba went to the doll store and bought up most of the dolls which she then gave to the children present.

When Melba arrived in Lilydale she had her party lunch at the Crown Hotel. Then it was a “a flying visit” to Cave Hill before the Athenaeum opening.

The Express reported the bazaar in great detail listing the stalls, people and the activities. It just goes to show much can be learned from a signed postcard.

A tragic accident turns Corey (Rohan Campbell) into a pariah, and the town of Haddonfield descends into chaos once again under the spectre of masked serial killer Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney).

Halloween Ends explores how hate and fear can corrupt us, with themes of radicalisation and an engrossing arc of growth through darkness. Campbell plays a reserved but kind young man who is ostracised after accidentally killing a child he was babysitting.

Harassment from the community causes Corey’s resentment to erupt, and he grows more

confident and assertive as he lashes out and Michael’s killer instinct rubs off on him. Corey forms a touching relationship with Allyson (Andi Matchik), but their bond puts you on edge as Corey’s violence escalates.

Michael and franchise mainstay Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), who survived Michael’s killing sprees in 1978 and 2018, both have relatively limited roles in the narrative,

with Michael serving almost as a mentor to Corey. Curtis still has her steely edge from Halloween 2018 and Halloween Kills, but conveys a more upbeat, relaxed persona as Laurie attempts to leave her trauma behind.

Halloween Ends has some heavy-handed dialogue on the persistence of evil, but the plot has a steady build of brutality and bitterness, culminating in a harrowing climax as Laurie confronts Michael and his disciple once and for all.

For a grim, grounded horror movie, Halloween Ends occasionally uses stereotypes – fifties greaser bullies, a seventies-style black DJ, a ditzy nurse having an affair with her boss – for its supporting characters, and Allyson and other characters blaming Laurie for Michael’s atrocities feels like hollow conflict.

Halloween Ends is a compelling character-driven horror film, and is screening in most Victorian cinemas.

Book of oral history PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN A review of South Flows the Pearl: Chinese Australian Voices

by Mavis Gock Yen South Flows the Pearl: Chinese Australian Voices is a book of oral history. The word “pearl” refers to China’s Pearl River, as the history of Chinese Australia started in the 1850s with gold diggers arriving from the Pearl River Delta in today’s Guangdong Province.

The twelve individuals interviewed for this book were “everyday people from the Australian Chinese community” under the White Australia policy. Designed to forbid people of non-European ethnic origin from immigrating here, the policy reduced our Chinese population from 30,000 in 1901 to around 10,000 after 1949. Compare that to the 2021 census results, where 1,390,637 Australian residents or 5.5% of our population identified themselves as having Chinese ancestry. The average Australian would most likely know a Chinese person as a friend, neighbour, colleague or family member.

Which is why this book is unique, as it documents the stories of Chinese Australians – as told by themselves – from a bygone era and one of the darker chapters in our nation’s history. Like her interviewees, the author Mavis Gock Yen was herself a dinki-di Australian. Born in Perth in 1916 to a Chinese immigrant and his Australian wife, she had lived in China and Australia, attending high school in Shanghai and receiving her teaching qualification in Sydney. In 1939 she moved to Hong Kong as a teacher.

Following the arrival of Japanese troops in December 1941, she escaped via a 3,000-kilometre journey on foot and by river boat, truck and train to Chongqing, China’s wartime capital, in March 1942.

Mavis helped the British Embassy in Chongqing look after refugees from Hong Kong. After the war, she stayed to help reviving China’s manufacturing industries and to teach English to matureaged students, many of whom were journalists in Beijing.

When Mao Zedong unleashed the Cultural Revolution in 1966, Mavis was expelled to the countryside for “re-education”. Due to her Australian background, she was forced to self-criticise as a “suspected foreign counter-revolutionary” – despite the fact that she had been conscientiously helping to build the New China during the previous 20 years.

It was then that Mavis began to critically examine her identity. Australia or China – where did she fit in? Why was it that she was considered a foreigner in both the countries she called home?

These questions inspired her interest in the life stories of other Chinese Australians after her return to Canberra at the age of 65 in 1981.

As a personal project – with neither professional nor academic support – Mavis preserved approximately 45 hours of precious Chinese Australian history on some 41 cassette tapes between 1987 and 1995. Then, using a manual typewriter, she meticulously transcribed those tapes and edited the responses of her interviewees into first-person narratives.

Sadly, Mavis died in 2008 before this book was produced. But her work remains invaluable as a record of the voices of those members of our Australian Chinese community who had direct links to the first wave of Chinese immigration to Australia since the mid-19th century.

Major morel breakthrough

By Renee Wood A Healesville based mushroom grower has made history becoming the first producer to grow ‘morel’ mushrooms commercially in the southern hemisphere.

Morels are an exclusive and sought-after mushroom generally only found when foraging in the wild however, Gramco Fungi has cracked the code to growing them in Australia.

Gramco Fungi has been working with a consultant from China who’s assisted the business in cultivating the variety.

Gramco Fungi owner Wes Arnott won’t be giving the secret away but said it’s taken them two years to get to this stage of a successful crop.

“The market for morel mushrooms is $1 to $2 billion a year and 95 per cent of it and more than that would be wild harvest,” Mr Arnott said.

“Even the colder climate ones in China and France and America are going to produce at a different time to ours, so they produce when the prices are low - we produce when the price is higher.”

Mr Arnott is looking to perfect the growing conditions and look to try indoor morel production like the many other varieties they currently grow indoors.

While the demand is hot for the variety, Mr Arnott intends to sell the technology to other growers once it’s fully established to bring a new industry to the country.

“We couldn’t produce enough on this farm, so what we intend to do is to proof of concept and then sell the technology to other people who want to grow. Okay, and show them how to do it. So there we go. develop an export market. So it’s sort of like it’s potentially a new industry for Australia.”

The variety is highly valued with local wholesale pricing around $80 a kilo, while retail reaches up to $150/kg.

“We know we can sell them in Canada, America, Europe all over, because it’s one of the world’s favourite mushrooms.”

The inclusive event for young people was held at the Mooroolbark Community Centre.

The dance floor saw 110 young people descend on it for the night.

Pride Formal celebrated Young people from all over the Yarra Ranges were invited to the first Pride formal over the weekend hosted by the Lilydale Youth Hub. The Mooroolbark event saw 110 young people hit the dance floor and get dressed up for a safe, welcoming event just for them on Saturday 15 October.

“We are really fortunate and proud to have been able to hold the first ever Pride Formal for young people in the Yarra Ranges,” Youth Engagement Officer Yashna Poorun said.

“It was incredible to see so many Yarra Ranges young people out celebrating who they are and having a great time.

“LGBTQIA+ support and services are pretty rare in the Yarra Ranges, so to have gathered 110 young people to celebrate who they are is enormous.”

For those needing a break from the energy of the dance floor, a special sensory area was set up where young people could chill out.

The event came together with support from FReeZA, Yarra Ranges Council, Lilydale High School, Burrinja, Headspace and Queer Arts Collective, with the help of some dedicated youth ambassadors.

“It’s a credit to all of the young LGBTQIA+ people in the Yarra Ranges and their friends, families and allies. They have made tonight (15 October) a truly unforgettable night, we hope they had a blast.”

The Lilydale Youth Hub team were proud to host the first Pride Formal in the Yarra Ranges over the weekend.

First womens win

By Callum Ludwig The first-ever Wandin Women’s Cricket side got their first-ever win in Round 1, heading up the highway to defeat Yarra Junction.

After winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Doggies got off on the front foot in a tidy bowling and yielding effort.

Wandin President and Women’s Coach Bryce Edwards said the team’s captain Olivia Edwards chose to bowl as she thought it might relax the nervous players and ease them into the game.

“They went out there they got one of the better bats out cheap, and then they bowled and fielded really well keeping them to 92 runs off their 20 overs,” he said.

“Two girls were on hat tricks at different stages as well, Dannie Ewart and Olivia Edwards which was really cool for them. Chasing 92 with some inexperienced and experienced players in there was never going to be easy.”

Olivia Edwards finished with 3 wickets for 10 runs off her 2 overs and Dannie Ewart with 2 for 12 off 2. The other wicket-takers for Wandin were Emm-Lee Curwood (1 for 3 off 2) and Nyree George (1 for 11 off 2). Charlotte Edwards also bowled tightly, only going for 3 runs off her 2 overs.

Mr Edwards said after going in to bat, the team lost a couple of wickets early, but in the end batted really well.

“Skye Wilson made 40 runs off 54 balls, Olivia Edwards made 14 off 16 but they also had the other girls chip in; Kerrie Edwards made 8, Dannie Ewart and Charlotte made five,” he said.

“Everyone involved has probably never been so excited, it was a great win and very unexpected, it was an absolutely unbelievable day. But whether they would have won or lost anyway, they just had a ball.”

“It was an amazing feeling, we’ve got parents there playing with their kids, and the interaction that comes with playing a team sport. Everyone was buzzing as we did the presentations, it was pure excitement,” he said.

“Afterwards for some of the women, it sunk in a little bit that is the first-ever women’s team to play for Wandin, and their names will be there for 50 or 100 years. They can’t wait to play again this week and they are feeling confident, even with a lot of improvement to come as the season goes on.”

The Wandin Cricket Club is still welcoming any new players who wish to get involved with their women’s, over 60s, over 70s or three men’s side for the 2022/23 season and encourages any players to get in touch with the club.

Round 2 Results: Wandin vs St Andrews In Round 2, the Wandin Women’s team was able to play on Sunday after many other games were cancelled due to last week’s weather.

They had their first home game, and were taking on St Andrews.

Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence came down to show her support of women in sport and flipped the coin, Captain Olivia Edwards won the toss and elected to bowl. Sending Saint Andrews in to bat Wandin knew they were going to have to stay clean with the ball.

The opening bowlers executed well and kept them to 63 at the 10th over. Tangi Clancy and Nyree George got their first wickets ever which brought the crowd alight.

Wandin kept Saint Andrews to 2-120 off 20 overs.

Wandin was ready for the challenge ahead, opening the batting Sky Wilson batted alongside first gamer Dionne Wilson!

Two early wickets fell from Saint Andrews’ tight bowling. Sky Wilson made a very handy 24 off 18.

Charlotte Edwards was outstanding, retiring on 51 from 45 balls. The match came down to the wire with Wandin needing 12 off the last two overs.

Unfortunately, Wandin just fell short lost by 2 runs.

The game was played in great sprits and both teams shared good laughs together after the game.

There was only one winner today; Women’s cricket.

Bring on next week, the Doggies will only get better every week.

The Ringwood District Cricket Association (RDCA) made the call to cancel all senior cricket and Friday night junior cricket. However, Saturday morning Junior cricket games could still be played if ground conditions were suitable.

Healesville’s U16 team was the clubs only team that got some cricket played.

Healesville 4/72 versus Laburnum 5/103 (Week 1 of a 2 day game) A new experience for the Under 16 team playing their first-ever split innings game where each team bats and bowls for 25 overs in the first week then both teams bat and bowl 25 overs again in the second week. It was an early start needing to make the trip to Laburnum.

Healesville won the toss and chose to bat first. The Bloods lost an early wicket but Lucas Parker (14) and Ethan Nikcevich (24) steadied the innings with a partnership of 37 before the next wicket fell and Healesville were 2/41 after 10 overs. Sam Drummond (11) and Denzel Parsons (13*) built a partnership of 26 runs leaving Healesville 4/72 at the end of their 25 overs. Denzel Parsons and Amelia English are not out and will be back to the crease next week to continue the batting innings. It was Healesville’s turn to bowl, Riley Cameron (1/12) and Megan Schelfhout (1/9) opened the bowling taking two early wickets and Laburnum were 2/16 off 5 overs. Within the next 5 overs, Sam Drummond (1/14) took a wicket and they were 3/34 off 10 overs.

Debutant Tyler Braden (1/10) took his first wicket in cricket and Ella Amore (1/8) also got a wicket to have Laburnum at 5/71. Laburnum finished their innings on 5/103. Good job to everyone on Saturday and Healesville will return next week to finish off the split innings match, with Laburnum continuing to bat first before Healesville embark on the run chase.

Yarra Junction women nab strong win

By Rob Boxell Yarra Junction skipper Carly Millar lost the toss and was sent onto a very wet Warrandyte high school oval to bowl first.

Two great bits of fielding from Lisa Hilton and Anelise McCracken reduced Warrandyte to 2/1. The bowling unit of Bec Brown, Alannah Bomford, Millie Kuth and Tara Wilson then all struck in quick succession to leave Warrandyte 6/22 at the halfway mark.

The bowling group stuck to their tasks ably supported by some great fielding to bowl Warrandyte out for 40 with Rachel Pilton wrapping the innings up with a double wicket maiden.

Bec Brown was the stand-out bowler bagging 2fa in a great spell of opening bowling. Special mention goes to Maddy Bennett who bowled her first-ever over in competitive cricket.

Millie Kuth and Lisa Hilton opened up looking to get the game over as quick as possible with both finding the boundary with ease.

Kuth was run out for 11 and Tara Wilson soon followed, run out for 3. Hilton batted through for 16* and Bomford 1* as we passed the target 2 wickets down in the 9th over.

Season rolls on in

By Ian Milgate With the start of Healesville Bowls Pennant season this week, the club raised the new First Nation’s flag for the first time.

Club Chairman and proud first nation man Robert Ayres, along with Bowls President Adrian Beales, Bowls Vice President John Clark and long standing club member and proud First Nations man Russell Smith proudly raised the flag alongside the Australian and Club flags.

“We are a community based sporting organisation that takes great pride in its membership and the great diversity that it has, flying this flag on game days is just a small but very important part to recognise all members and their history,” they said.

Tuesday pennant Tuesday saw the start of the 2022-23 Bowling Season with Healesville fielding two Pennant teams on a Tuesday in Division2 and Division 6 and on Saturday in Division 3 and Division 8.

Warburton Bowls Club claims one win

By Garry Lewis The Warburton Bowls Club had a mixed start to the start of the 2022/ 23 Metropolitan Pennant Season with the Weekend Warburton 2 side the only victor.

The Midweek Warburton 1 team played away against Lilydale 1 and went down, 56 to 66, in a disappointing start to the season.

Rink scores were G. Walsh 24/ 17; S. Lord 19/ 20 and S. Freestone 13/ 29. They look forward to regrouping this week at home against Healesville 1.

The Weekend Warburton 1 team played Mulgrave C.C. 1 away in round 1 on Saturday. Mulgrave quickly grabbed a handy lead before the Burras fought back. However, the home side was too consistent overall to win 90 to 70 shots. Rink scores for the Burras were: A. Donohue 13/ 21; P. Caneva 16/ 18; C. Neale 16/ 22 and J. Brookes 25/ 29. They look forward to this week’s game at home against Essendon 1.

Full credit to every rink for not giving up, particularly Steve Darwall’s rink which fought back from a huge deficit in the second half to win by 2 shots. Rink scores were: G. Lewis 28/ 14; S. Darwall 20/ 18; P. Summers 21/ 30 and R. Bartlett 24/ 23. They face another challenging away game against Ferntree Gully 3 this week.

Club for hosting the first Bankers’ Competition on Saturday! The Eagles won the first contest by 12 shots. The Burras look forward to hosting the competition this Saturday.

Intra Club Competitions will also commence shortly, with good numbers entered.

Members are urged to organise their matches as soon as possible to get events going.

One of the club’s new members, Damian Key, who has reached the Final of the Eastern Ranges Bowls Region Novice Men’s Singles Championship, will play the final at Warburton Bowls Club on Wednesday November 2 at 6pm.

Hence, the Wednesday Night Barefoot Bowls Triples Competition will now commence on November 9. Any interested new teams are encouraged to contact Glenys Lewis 0473653137 for further details.

The club welcomes any new or beginning members to join our small but progressive community club. Social Bowls continues to be played on Mondays from 12 midday with excellent numbers regularly participating.

Rain holds out for weekend season starter

By Peter Brennan The Pennant season is finally upon bowlers, with both the midweek and weekend competitions starting last week. On Tuesday the Yarra Junction Bowling Club travelled to Ferntree Gully for the opening game, played on a fast green in beautiful weather, with a tricky wind to make it interesting. The Junction bowlers adapted well to the conditions and scores were neck and neck throughout the day. In an exciting finish, Yarra Junction won two out of three rinks, and won overall by a single point. Away wins are valuable, and this one was very satisfying.

On Saturday, after storms, heavy rain, and floods, the weather gods smiled upon Yarra Junction and delivered another fine day for the opening weekend game, played at home against Yarra Glen. There were contrasting results on the four rinks, but Yarra Junction ultimately registered an impressive win, opening the season in fine style.

Owing to an influx of new members there is now a surplus of players, though not quite enough to field a second team. Hopefully, this trend will continue, so a second team becomes viable. In the meantime, in the interests of fairness, a rotational system has been introduced.

Wednesday 12 October, Stableford: Steuart Hawke has been playing very consistent golf recently. ( Must be a “wettracker!”) But this week he has outdone himself, by beating his age. Hawkey has posted a superb 41 points, off a 14-handicap, to easily win the day,( and pip the age barrier!) Junior Garside can be pleased with his 38 points and took home the runner-up prize. Balls extended all the way down to 32. NTP winners were Ken Barratt (3rd), Happy Gilmore (5th), Hatty (9th), Mr. Scotland Leckenby (12th) and Maxwell Carvill (15th).

This week, there was no Twilight due to the conditions on-course, and also no carts!

Saturday 15 October, 4-person Ambrose: The much-anticipated Back-to-Warbie day saw fine conditions ensue, and a “drying” course to challenge the BIG field of 120. It was great to see many ex-members come back to sup[port the day, PLUS a large number of visitors all of which made for a very profitable event! The Ambrose winners comprised Darryl Ward, Rob and Kyle Ferguson and Jeff Sharp, whose Nett score of 50.87 easily took home the major prizes. The runner-up team, of Mick and John Danaher, Deanne Rasmusson and Howard McDonald posted a very creditable 53.25. Finally, coming in 3rd were Paul Osbourne, Willo, Tony Hicks and Terry McNee, who posted a 53.37! NTP daily winners were Ben Davies (3rd), the ever-consistent Gary Frankovic (5th), Peter Fox (9th), Darryl Ward, (12th) and A.J. (15th). Longest Drive prizes went to Meredith,(naturally!), Willo and Aaron Toole. Sandra Reidy and Danny Fox hit the straightest drives on the day. Finally, The General and Match Committees would like to publicly thank both the members and the many visitors who supported this day. No doubt, there will be another one being planned right now for 2023!
