Cancer challenge Two Ferntree Gully based-riders have set out to cycle 976km in 40 days, representing the 976 operating beds at the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Sri Lanka they are fundraising for.

Dhanu Perera and Anurudda Yatawara are a part of a group of cyclists who have already raised nearly $40,000 through Ride for Apeksha, with their eyes set on a fundraising total of $100,000.

Mr Perera said the pair would soon participate in the United Energy Around the Bay, a 210km ride around Port Phillip Bay on Sunday 9 October.

“The longest one I’ve done so far is the one

I did on the weekend which was 150 kilometres, starting from Mordialloc, up to Port Melbourne and then back to Dromana,” he said.

“I try to do 50km a day on the trainer and on weekends I try to do at least 100 or 150kms.

I’m going to be testing myself doing the 210km ride.”

The ride starts and finishes at Albert Park Lake while also crossing the Westgate Bridge, with riders choosing between 20, 50, 100, 200, 210 and 300km distances.

Mr Yatawara said the furthest ride he has done is 110km.

“I’m looking forward to it, it’s going to be a milestone in my riding career,” he said.

“Since the beginning of the campaign in September I’ve ridden about 600km. Hopefully, I can make it to the end.”

Both men said they’ve lost family members to cancer, inspiring them to take part and fund the hospital in their country of birth.

“My aunt passed away from this deadly disease around 20 years ago,” Mr Yatawara said.

“I have experienced that in my family environment, which attracted me to this fundraiser.”

“My uncle had liver cancer around 10 years ago when I was back in Sri Lanka,” Mr Perera said.

“He passed away, so I do have a personal

fight against cancer.”

Around the Bay attracts more than 10,000 riders each year, with more than 250,000 taking part since the vent was first held in 1993.

Mr Yatawara said plenty of people have supported their fundraising efforts for a great cause.

“I would like to say thank you to all of them, there have been people from all over the world and in the local community,” he said.

Mr Perera said he is hoping the fundraiser will promote the fundraiser to a large audience and raise as much money as possible.

By Parker McKenzie Cardinia Council was finally able to celebrate the opening of the Gembrook Skate park with the community after the park was officially reopened in 2019.

After being postponed and cancelled because of Covid, the council held a “skate and scoot jam” celebrating under clear skies and sunshine on Thursday 29 September, featuring competitions, a free BBQ and prizes for young people to get involved.

Coordinator for parks planning at Cardinia Council Sam Cross said they first tried to have a community opening when the upgrades were finished, but major weather events and Covid stopped it from happening.

“It’s been almost three years in the making, it’s awesome to see how busy it is here,” she said.

“It’s really great to have organisations like the YMCA here and involved in running the event for us.”

The skate park received a $1.5 million upgrade co-funded by the council, and state and federal governments, which included an adventure playground, shelters, barbeques, a multi-use sports court and an upgrade to the skate park itself.

YMCA Action Sports skate coach Mark Khalil said events and investment in skateparks help create a good environment for young people to grow.

“If there is a safe place for kids to go and have fun, and it’s somewhere like they where everyone is skating, it’s just going to keep kids out of trouble to begin with,” he said.

“It’s really important that the government invests and does more because the community it builds is priceless.”

Action Sports runs skateboarding lessons and workshops alongside competitions and events in partnership with local councils.

Mr Khalil said it has been “really positive to see this many people on scooters, bikes and skateboards.”

“Skateboarding has always been a bit of an outcast and it’s not really seen as a traditional sport,” he said.

“Now that it’s in the Olympics, there’s been way more acceptance. The tides have changed.”

The event was well attended by local children, who competed for prizes in competitions ran by the YMCA. Bernard Tyers, whose son got involved in the skate competitions, said investment in facilities like skate parks is important to the community.

“We travelled down from Pakenham for this, we saw it a month ago and decided to register for it. He’s been pumped to get involved and it’s good to be here,” he said.

“It’s very important to have access to stuff like this and it allows parents to have a break.”

The Skate Park is located at 4 Gembrook Road, Gembrook.

Candidate debate

By Tyler Wright Dandenong Ranges businesses and tradespeople will be able to have their say on issues that matter to them in a Q&A with Monbulk electorate Liberal candidate Gareth Ward and Labor candidate Daniela De Martino this month.

The Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association (EDRA), which represents small businesses in the area, will be holding the event on Friday October 21 at the Hills Hub in Emerald from 7am to 9am.

“It’s appropriate that we ensure that our not only our members, but those in the small business world are well understood as far as their concerns, and also have a good idea on what the plans are, for potentially the incumbent of the election,” EDRA chairperson John Wall said.

“Too often, we find that there’s not enough focus on the small business people and they get neglected, which is kind of difficult because we represent such an important part of the economy,” Mr Wall said.

The issues of paramount concern for small businesses in the eastern Dandenong Ranges are power, telecommunications and the availability of labor, according to Mr Wall.

“Personally, we were affected by collectively nine days without power in June, and in October... but there were other people in the area that were affected much longer than that,” Mr Wall said.

“Our property is now underground power, but the vast majority of the area, beyond just the the local limits of the suburbs, are not.

So there’s quite a few people - and that includes a lot of businesses - that either have to have power generators, or do without, and when you’re in business, you can’t open unless you’ve got electricity. “ The Victorian Government supplied generators to households in need last year, but Mr Wall said EDRA wants the Monbulk candidates to understand the financial costs businesses have to wear.

Man charged after attempted abduction

“We also need to understand where the state political system is going to drive that because if we’re going to continue to be expected to provide that sort of replacement, we need to understand what we’re going to be compensated as well.

Mr Wall said the Railway Dog, a wine bar in Emerald, recently had to close due to a lack of staff; also a major issue in the eastern Dandenong Ranges.

“Normal people were working, and they needed some time off, but they had to close because they just don’t have enough staff to be able to continue working,” he said.

A man has been charged by police after an attempted abduction in Lysterfield on 18 June.

The man has been charged with two counts of sexual assault, two counts of assault with intent to commit a sexual act and two counts of common law assault.

It is alleged by police the woman was walking through the Churchill National Park when she was approached by the man around 4.15pm.

He allegedly grabbed her by the waist and put a hand over her mouth before attempting to drag her to the ground.

Police said the woman managed to struggle free and ran from the area before calling triple zero. It is also alleged a second woman was assaulted at the same location on the same day.

The man will face Dandenong Magistrates Court.

Police are investigating a fatal crash on 1 October in Seville East.

Emergency services attended the single-car crash and believe the vehicle left the roadway on Warburton Highway and struck a pylon around 8.30pm. Police said the yet-to-be formally identified person was located deceased outside the vehicle nearby.

Covid isolation period ends this month

By Parker McKenzie People with Covid-19 — outside of healthcare — will no longer be required to isolate themselves from 14 October, after a meeting of the National Cabinet abolished the fiveday isolation period.

At a press conference on 30 September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the premiers and chief ministers had agreed “unanimously” on the decision.

“We have agreed today that we will end states and territories will end their respective mandatory isolation requirements on 14 October,” he said.

“The pandemic leave disaster payments will end at that time as well with the exception of people in high-risk settings, which

need to be given particular support.”

He flagged aged care, health care and disability care as previously identified areas to be included in the exception.

Federal Chief Medical Officer Professor Paul Kelly said the decision was made in the context of low community transmission in Australia.

“It does not in any way suggest that the pandemic is finished, we will almost certainly see future peaks of the virus into the future as we have seen earlier in this year,” he said.

“At the moment, we have very low rates of both cases, hospitalizations, intensive care, admissions, aged care outbreaks and various other measures that we’ve been following very closely.”

Prof. Kelly said in isolation itself cannot

be seen in isolation and if there is pressure on the healthcare system a different decision may be introduced.

“It needs to be seen in the context of that high vaccination rate, high previous infection, giving further protection, the availability of treatments, the availability of vaccines, including the new Bivalent vaccines and all of the other measures we have in place, particularly to protect vulnerable people close to where they are,” he said.

“It’s time to move away from Covid exceptionalism in my view, and we should be thinking about what we do to protect people from any respiratory disease.”

The isolation period was slashed from seven days to five last month.

New recycling reforms Victorian households will be able to recycle everything from soft plastics to used pizza boxes in the coming years, as part of the Andrews Labor Government’s massive transformation of Victoria’s recycling systems.

Minister for the Environment and Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio today announced Australian-first changes to recycling that will mean more things can be recycled in the four household bins rolled out across the state by 2030.

“Whether through household recycling, the container deposit scheme or banning single use plastics, we are reducing waste, creating jobs and building new economy that is better for the planet,” Ms D’Ambrosio said.

“We’re the first state in Australia to roll-out the same bins to every household, and the first to include soft plastics and pizza boxes in those bins – leading the way as we divert 80 per cent of waste from landfill by 2030.”

By making recycling consistent throughout Victoria with four bins – purple for glass, green for food and garden organics, yellow for mixed recyclables and red for household rubbish - the Labor Government is supporting households to easily sort waste and recycling and reduce landfill.

In the coming years, the four bins will be able to recycle soft plastics such as plastic bags and wrappers and soiled food containers, in line community need and the consultation with industry.

The Labor Government today also announced $1 million in funding for a new facility that will turn hard-to-recycle materials like beverage cartons and coffee cups into sustainable building products and $175,000 for a facility to process oversized green waste into provide organic, carbon rich, soil additives for the farming industry.

Dining and entertainment cash back rebates open

By Tyler Wright Yarra Ranges residents can once again get money off the bill at their favourite restaurants, cafes, bars and live entertainment venues with the Victorian Dining and Entertainment Program returning after its success earlier this year.

The program was first launched in March, with more than $32 million claimed

by Victorians across food and entertainment venues within three months.

More than 40,000 claims were made in the Yarra Ranges Shire and Greater Dandenong City municipalities, and more than $6 million was spent on dining and entertainment in the region.

The latest round of the program, which opened on Monday 19 September, has already had strong uptake with customers able to secure 25 per cent cash back on purchases over $40.

While cost of living pressures put extra pressure on punters’ hip pockets Belgrave’s Babaji’s Kerala Kitchen co-owner Billy Crombie hopes the return of the dining and entertainment program will boost customers’ spend once again. “[People are] still eating out, but their spend per head is less, so this is going to help that increased spend per head… and it will help our events business up here,” Ms Crombie said.

She has been using social media to alert customers to the scheme, and said the initial period of the program encouraged customers to add more items onto their bill.

“When you said to them ‘did you know you can claim back 25 per cent?’ they were spending more; they were buying that glass of wine or they were they were having dessert,” Ms Crombie said.

Stocks hit 25 year high

By Callum Ludwig The third straight summer of predicted La Niña events has led to Melbourne Water’s advice to halt any desalinated water ordered by the Victorian Government to be accepted, with the state’s water storage over 94 per cent as of 27 September.

This is the first time in 25 years it’s been near capacity and is positive news for Melbourne’s water security and the environment ahead of spring and summer.

Melbourne Water’s Acting Managing Director Gavan O’Neill said because of high storage levels, if required, rainfall in Melbourne Water’s supply catchments in the Yarra Ranges can be released as additional flows from the Thomson Dam into the Thomson and Yarra rivers.

“At certain rates, these managed flows can provide environmental and recreational benefits. The Thomson Dam does not receive any water from the desalination plant and is nearing capacity because of the significant amount of rain it has received,” he said.

“Without regular desalination orders, storages will not be able to meet Melbourne’s water demands under most conditions. Demand from rainfall-dependent sources is already outstripping supply – so there is a reliance on desalinated water to fill this gap and to keep storages topped up. “ Minister for Water and Eastern Victoria MP Harriet Shing accepted the advice on 23 September and the desalination order was immediately halted.

To date, the Victorian Desalination Plant had delivered 3.4 gigalitres (GL) of this year’s 15 GL order – 110 GL lower than last year’s order.

Ms Shing said the desalination plant is a critical part of our long-term water supply.

“We keep our water storages as high as pos-

“We are acting on the best advice about our resource position – adapting to the very rare event of three successive La Niña events.”

Melbourne retail water corporations in-

cluding Yarra Valley Water will ensure households only pay for the water which has already been delivered, and families can expect their next bills to be slightly lower with desalination costs removed.

Mr O’Neill said 15 GL would have supplied

about 3 per cent of Greater Melbourne’s annual water use, which represents about 1 per cent of the volume currently stored in Melbourne’s water supply system.

“Greater Melbourne’s water levels are in the best shape they have been in 25 years because of a combination of above-average rainfall and the use of the Victorian Desalination Plant since 2017. However, while our storages are high, if conditions turn dry, which we know can happen very quickly, levels can drop swiftly,” he said.

“In a severe drought, storage levels can drop by 20 per cent in just 12 months, so having storage levels high creates a much-needed buffer. Without water contributions from the desalination plant since 2016/17, Melbourne’s storage levels would be 25 per cent lower than they are now. On September 13 the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a forecast that shows Melbourne will experience wetter La Nina weather patterns for a third consecutive year.”

The storage levels are around 65 per cent higher than the lowest levels experienced in June 2009 at the end of the Millennium Drought when levels were just 25.6 per cent.

Mr O’Neill said with both BoM and CSIRO projections pointing to long-term trends of less rainfall, less run-off into rivers and storages and more severe and prolonged droughts, it is beneficial to keep dams and reservoirs as full as possible.

“This is just the fourth time since records began in 1900 there have been three La Nina years in a row, so it is very unusual, but beneficial for Greater Melbourne’s drinking water reservoirs and catchments,” he said.

“Despite the past few years of wet weather, Melbourne has experienced below long-term average inflows into water storages in 16 of the past 20 years and our population has grown 20 per cent since 2007.”

Reserve receives $300k

By Tyler Wright Yarra Ranges Council has welcomed a $300,000 funding boost for the Belgrave South Recreation Reserve as part of the second round of the state government’s Building Safer Communities program.

The project, called Belgrave South ‘Create, Protect, Love,’ was born from a Creating Safer Places grant and was announced on Tuesday 27 September at the Belgrave South Recreation Reserve park on Gilmore Court.

It will see a new youth space with hard court areas, skate-able elements, artwork and lighting as part of increased security in Belgrave South.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Councillor Jim Child said the project will deliver improved connections for people walking through the park, with paving and lighting for accessibility and added security at the netball clubrooms.

“We know that young people need engaging spaces close to home,” Cr Child said.

“This project will utilise design principles which help make the environment safer, it will: Increase visibility and natural surveillance, improve access and sightlines, provide a new space that encourages social interaction, generate a stronger sense of ownership through empowerment of youth.”

Yarra Ranges Council’s Youth Advisory Group will assist in consulting young people from the area to develop a purposebuilt under-cover area, an art mural design, a skate park and half-sized basketball court for young people to socialise and play, Cr Child said.

“It’s heartening to see teams at Council take the approach of nothing about us, without us and apply it to projects – if a space is being made for young people, getting them involved is one of the best ways we can make sure we’ve got it right,” Cr Child said.

“The end result of that is a space that young people will be keen to use, and one that helps them build pride in their community.”

“The Building Safer Communities Program has supported local initiatives right across the state that not only work to keep locals safe and connected but support locals to feel safer in public places - which is also incredibly important,” Mr Carbines said.

“These grants support local communities to create and deliver solutions to local problems because locals know their communities best.”

Cr Child said he hopes when the ‘Create, Protect, Love’ project is completed, it will “be a space that every young person in our community is excited to come to and becomes a space where they can spend time with friends, grow their skills and make their life in the hills the best it can be.”

Since 2015, the state government has provided more than $763,000 to Yarra Ranges Council for 15 crime prevention projects, including a $26,000 grant for a public art project to prevent graffiti, increase pride in public places and deter crime from the community.

Off to VCAT after delay

By Parker McKenzie VCAT will decide on a planning application to subdivide a plot of land in Ferntree Gully 15 times after Knox City Council failed to make a decision.

The developers of the site at 17 Allora Avenue appealed to VCAT after the council failed to determine the application within the “prescribed timeframes of the Planning and Environment Act 1987.

Cr Meagan Baker, who called for a report of the proposed development at a previous council meeting, said the development is inconsistent with the local area.

“The proposal will not provide an appropriate balance between the need for additional housing while respecting and positively responding to the site and its local context within the local Dandenong foothills,” she said.

“I’m seeking for my fellow colleagues to support this evening to form the view of sup-

porting the officer’s recommendation and the report to refuse this planning application due to the number of inconsistencies outlined.”

The report recommended that if the council were in a position to make a decision in the prescribed timeframe, it would have issued a “notice of decision to refuse to grant a planning permit” for the development because it fails to satisfy relevant planning policy framework strategies and objectives, fails to comply with local planning policy, is consistent with the neighbourhood residential zone and the design and development overlay and does not avoid the removal, destruction or lopping of native vegetation.

The application received 13 objections, with various concerns raised when it was referred to the council’s asset officer, stormwater engineer, transport and traffic engineer and arborist.

Knox City Council releases Capital Works Program

By Parker McKenzie Knox City Council’s annual capital works program report has been handed down for 2021/2022, showing 92 per cent of total projects were completed out of 201 and spending on maintenance matched the deterioration of assets.

The report highlighted the following achievements for the council over the last year: 15 road reconstruction projects completed, in excess of 100 streets re-surfaced, oval renewal works completed at Windermere Reserve, renewal of cricket nets at three grounds, Tennis court renewals at Glenfern Park, Millers Reserve and Eildon Park, Floodlighting upgrades at Gilbert Park, new shared paths around the municipality, upgrades to the Knox Park Athletics change rooms, the completion of the Knox Express Library facility and the planting of 2,425 trees.

Cr Jude Dwight said the Capital Works Program is the biggest service the council delivers to the community.

“Although I have little to no involvement with most of the projects in the program, I really enjoy being able to celebrate them and let people in my area know when something’s been replaced, improved or made safer,” she said.

“To see that more than 100 streets across Knox have been resurfaced, 2435 street trees have been planted, we have drainage and pipe renewal to the value of $2.68 million, essential

work to support our stormwater system which is under a massive load at the moment, this is all fantastic and for me it’s worth celebrating.”

185 projects were either started or completed in the 2021/2022 period.

Cr Marshia Leitch said the capital works program is always “juicy and fun” to look at.

“It’s probably one of the most visual things that we deliver for our community,” she said.

“If you haven’t read it yet, I absolutely encourage you to do so to celebrate the work that we’re delivering for our community and the services that we’re providing for health, safety and wellbeing in the capital works space.”

The total budget for the Capital Works Program was $68.9 million, of which 98 per cent was expended.

Cr Nicole Seymour said when running a big budget and when there are fiscal restraints, it is easy to cut maintenance.

“This council decided not to do that, we’ve held firm and kept investment in critical spend categories,” she said.

“We’re now funding maintenance at a level that matches deterioration. Same with road surfacing, the same with footpaths, the same with our shared paths and so on. That is absolutely critical that we’re not creating a legacy problem for future generations and future councils.”

The asset renewal program revised budget for 2021/22 was $27.9 million, of which 85 per cent or $23.6 million was spent.

Report on councillors running in state election

By Parker McKenzie Knox City Council has delivered a report considering the issues associated with councillors who are standing as candidates in elections, with two current councillors currently set to be on the ballot ahead of the November 26 state election.

The original resolution, bought at the August 2022 meeting, was passed to deliver a report at the September meeting to provide “information regarding the Governance issues associated with Councillors campaigning in state and federal elections, having particular regard to decision-making, advocacy and Councillor allowances.”

Cr Nicole Seymour, who is running as an independent candidate in the Rowville electorate, said she acknowledged some of her colleagues had concerns about the impact of her candidacy “from a local government act perspective.”

“I’m absolutely pleased that Councillor Grasso and myself have actually gone over and above the requirements of what is expected of us, both of us have done our research beforehand and had put in for a leave of absence longer than we’re expected or needed to,” she said.

“By all accounts are doing our utmost to ensure the integrity of this council is upheld and protected, so I’m very confident with the report as presented.”

Cr Sorina Grasso, who is the nominated Labor candidate for Croydon, said an earlier defeated motion to delay the report by Cr Jude Dwight on behalf of an absent Cr

Cooper “didn’t make sense.”

“I knew already that what Councillor Seymour and myself have done was above and beyond the minimum legal requirements,” she said.

“Let’s make a decision on it tonight and let’s support it.”

The report states the Local Government Act 2020 doesn’t require a candidate to take a leave of absence at any period in the leadup to an election or limit their capacity to perform the role of councillor, however, the Municipal Association of Victoria Guidelines state a candidate should take a leave of absence from the nomination date from the relevant commission, concluding no earlier than the close of voting.

Cr Seymour requested will take a leave of absence from 31 October until 28 November, while Cr Grasso will also take leave during the election period.

Cr Jude Dwight said unfortunately there is “no black and white text and it appears open to interpretation” regarding the report.

“I’m going to quote MAV guidelines eight: a counsellor who is a prospective candidate or a nominated candidate should not use counsellor resources including Council staff, equipment and facilities in relation to their candidacy,” she said.

“Guideline nine: a counsellor who is a prospective candidate or a nominated candidate should not use counsel activities including council meetings, events, networking meetings and council related activities in relation to their candidacy.” mailcommunity.com.au

Action against potholes

By Shelby Brooks Cardinia Shire Council will investigate its own response to deteriorating roads following a 91 per cent increase in pothole defects in recent months.

The staggering statistic was determined by looking at long-term averages for sealed roads in the shire during June, July and August, Councillor Kaye Cameron said at the September meeting.

Cr Cameron requested a report be made outlining the impact of recent weather patterns on the performance of the council’s roads.

The report will also look into what measures have been undertaken by the council to respond to the conditions and how it has impacted the timeliness of repair work.

Voting unanimously for Cr Cameron’s notice of motion, the council will also write to the Minister for Roads asking for action and a reduction in the delay in the completion of repairs to defects in the state-owned and managed arterial road network.

Cr Cameron said increased feedback from the community had sparked the need for a report.

“In the report that will come back to council, hopefully it will highlight that council has been responsive to the issue and that the Department of Transport (DOT) will give us some information on how they plan to manage their road system,” she said.

Councillor Stephanie Davies agreed with the need for a letter to the Minister for Roads Ben Carroll and hoped it would be received in good faith.

“I hear numerous concerns from residents and commuters about the roads within the shire, as I presume all councillors do,” she said.

Potholes, like this one on the Kooweerup bypass, have been an issue over winter. 295066 that potholes [on council roads] are assessed and completely repaired within four days.

“But we don’t have as much information about the arterial roads [DOT roads] as we don’t have the jurisdiction.

“Unfortunately, I’ve heard numerous escalations from residents, that their complaints on the arterial road network [DOT roads] aren’t being actioned. When this happens, I can only ask council staff to advocate on their behalf, which they do by the agreed channels. But it’s triple handling. It’s a huge problem for Cardinia’s residents and commuters.”

Councillor Jack Kowarzik pointed out more needed to be done to make the community aware that different roads fall under the different authority’s responsibility.

“Information surrounding which roads are a responsibility of the Department of Transport verses the council is important in this discussion and we need to do a better job of that,” he said.

“But the fact of the matter is people don’t necessarily care a great deal whose responsibility is what, they just want the condition of the roads they drive on to improve.”

He also defended the shire’s response to the poor condition of its roads over winter.

“Despite appearances, and despite what the community sentiment is, I think the report will come back in November and reflect positively on the actions of this council,” he said.

“Traffic officers and customer service are logging complaints already that fall under the

maintenance responsibility of the DOT and passing them on so residents don’t have to ring up twice and waste more time on the phone.

“And also by procuring another truck to respond to potholes maintenance so now we have two crews doing that.”

Councillor Graeme Moore wanted to make clear the criticism wasn’t directed at the shire’s own staff.

“I know they do a fantastic job,” he said.

“But our community doesn’t see it that way.

They get confused as to who owns and who is responsible for what road. That’s where the major problem comes from.

“I see some pretty bad DOT roads that only get patched and get worse and worse.”

Monbulk netballers will be able to enjoy new shelter as part of Yarra Ranges Council’s capital development grant program.

Capital works approved

By Tyler Wright Monbulk Recreation Reserve Development Group has welcomed $25,000 from Yarra Ranges Council’s capital development grant program, which will go towards new netball courts and cricket nets, storage and alfresco finishing touches.

The $70,380 project has also been partially funded by the state government and the Monbulk Recreation Reserve Development Group.

Monbulk Recreation Reserve Development Group president Paul Utting, who represents the Monbulk Cricket Club, Monbulk Junior Football Club and the Monbulk Football Netball Club, said netballers will have access to covered shelters to avoid getting “saturated” on match days. “[Players are] all waiting for it. They keep asking me, ‘when are these things going to happen?” Mr Utting said.

“We’ve had the quotes and a lot of it’s in place. But I’ll be very excited when I when I get the formal email and forward that through to the club presidents and then they dish that out to their members.”

Monbulk Recreation Reserve Development Group was one of 11 local clubs to receive funding for projects to benefit the community, including Ferny Creek Tennis Club and Hilltop Recreation Association.

In a Yarra Ranges Council meeting on Tuesday 27 September, where the capital development grant program recipients were announced, Ryrie ward councillor Fiona McAllister said unlike other programs, this round was focused on infrastructure.

“They are a real mix, from BMX, to bowls...but I think the thing that always stands out to me, is now more than ever, a lot of our community groups - which are fuelled by volunteers - are struggling,” Cr McAllister said.

“They are doing it hard...in terms of getting volunteers, resilience is low, people are really worn out, and also doing it hard in terms of money.

A huge thank-you goes out to probably hundreds, if not thousands, of volunteers that keep those 11 clubs alive and all the others across Yarra Ranges.”

Streeton Ward councillor Andrew Fullagar seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously.

Mr Utting said Monbulk Recreation Reserve subcommittees have been fortunate to secure $11 million since their establishment in 2010, funding various projects.

“This one will really help us just finish those final little things that the big projects tend to miss,” he said.

Works are set to be completed with the next two to three months.

By Tyler Wright Upwey locals should keep an eye out for portraits hanging in local shop fronts as the local Upwey Archies exhibition returns for another year of celebrating residents’ creativity.

Run by the Upwey Community Group with help from Burrinja Cultural Centre and local traders, this year’s showcase of local’s portrait works will be available for public viewing from Thursday 13 October to Thursday 10 November.

Upwey Community Group member and head of the Upwey Archies team, Linda Fullugar, said more than 100 works are expected to be entered into this year’s exhibition, with the newly introduced ‘community vote’ returning once again after last year’s success.

“Burrinja were out to help us do a click and collect for the art boards last year, which worked really well... we moved the exhibition closer to Christmas when things were opening up a bit,” Ms Fullagar said.

“That’s how we coped during lockdown, but it’s pretty much back to normal this year.”

Last year’s open category winner Paul Miller was celebrated for a portrait of his daughter’s eyes peering over her face mask, while Poppy Hayler won in the 14 years old and under category for her self portrait.

Both winners will be judging entires in their respective categories for this year’s ‘Archies.’

The Upwey Community Group does a letterbox drop before the Upwey Archies each year, hoping to gather artists and residents alike to celebrate art in the Hills community.

“It gives a real vibrancy to Upwey...a real buzz; you see lots of people walking up and down the streets, pointing at portraits, [and] artists proudly showing their works off to the rest of their family,” Ms Fullagar said.

“For some artists, this is the first time they’ve had their works publicly displayed, so there is

a real buzz in the town, and it’s worth visiting.”

Artists will return their canvases to the Upwey Township Hall on Thursday 6 September, where they will be judged before nine winners are announced on Friday 11 November.

Winners will secure mystery prizes including theatre tickets and meals in the Upwey township.

Artists connect in Upwey

By Tyler Wright Artists are enjoying each other’s company in a monthly group at Upwey’s The Fat Goat bar, sharing their experiences of life as a creative in the Hills.

Performer Toni Main started Where Artists Meet, or ‘WAM’ sessions, back in 2019 when she discovered artists were struggling to socialise outside of exhibition openings.

“Exhibition openings have a whole different social engagement in them, and you’re quite often talking more about the art than about being an artist in general,” Main said.

“I decided to have a play around with making a space where artists can come together and just be social, that there’s no kind of professional development involved, there’s no expectations involved, that it’s just a really casual space.”

After its initial success, WAM was brought to a halt throughout pandemic restrictions and was not moved online, but has once again returned this year to a an intimate crowd of artists.

“It’s really lovely to have artists from all different mediums come together and talk about what life is like as a creative... there’s so much variation,” Main said.

“Last time I was there we had an author, a painter, a musician, and installation artists, and it was just really nice to have those commonalities of how hard it is to do your artwork, how to have that artwork, life balance and income balance, and then also sharing inspiration.”

“A lot of us were on our phones out and like sharing images or sounds of things that we’ve gone and experienced or our own work, talking about what we have in common in that aspect, or what is different between us all as well.”

While conversation can sometimes get political, group members also discuss performances they have experienced together or simply chat about what they have been up to.

“The other week, [WAM] coincided with an exhibition opening of local artists....then they came afterwards, joining in a little bit at the end of the day,” Main said.

“Sometimes the sessions are a bit smaller, but the intimate ones are really nice as well because you get to really know the other people at the table.”

Whether you are “crocheting socks or painting the next Renoir,” you are welcome to step out of your studio space and connect with fellow artists.

“You’re making art in your own little bubble, so it’s really nice to step out of that bubble and find other people that are in a similar situation as you, and just have you ‘Friday night drinks’.”

WAM sessions are held on the last Thursday of every month at The Fat Goat, at 2 Morris Rd, Upwey.

Young people’s storm trauma told through virtual show

By Tyler Wright 21-year-old Willow Swaneveld’s family home in Cockatoo was completely destroyed by a fallen tree during a storm event on October 29 last year.

The Star Mail previously reported on the show of community support for Willow’s family, helping raise funds for rental accommodation.

But to this day, the house and its remains sit un-demolished on the property, “rotting away” and looking “less and less like a house every day,” Willow said.

“Being able to share my story through this art, and through this festival, it’s kind of taking the power away from the event and given me a little bit of control, which is huge.”

Along with other young people in the Yarra Ranges, Willow participated in the augmented reality project Hard Place/Good Place; inviting the viewer into the lived experience of the June and October storm events in the area.

3D scans were taken of Willow’s family home, and she was able to share the story of trauma she wanted told as part of the process.

“I’m appreciative of the chance to tell it.

I think that letting people know that it happened and it’s not just wood that needs to be cleaned up, but it’s people’s lives that are affected, not just their houses,” Willow said.

“So much happens behind the scenes that you don’t even think about, so to be able to spread the word, or awareness towards

the people behind the catastrophe...it’s a lot deeper than just smashed windows and bricks and mortar.”

Launching on Friday 30 September at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum in Lilydale, The Big Anxiety is set to have a significant impact on Yarra Ranges residents as they work through the mental health and wellbeing impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic combined with the damaging storms of 2021.

“I just hope that people feel that this festival is a chance to be heard...to know that they’re not alone,” Willow said.

“And that no matter which exhibition that they’re going to go see, they’re going to get something out of it because it’s beautifully done.”

The launch of The Big Anxiety, showcasing projects that ask cultural, social and philosophical questions about what helps

and hinders our collective mental health, coincides with National Mental Health Month.

The 2022 festival program is also co-directed by Scientia Professor Jill Bennett from UNSW Sydney and Professor Renata Kokanovi? from RMIT University.

“The arts are the best means we have for sharing complex experiences. It is a pathway that can show us what we may not know about ourselves and others, and it also shines a light on relationships and social settings that help or hinder mental health. We have seen evidence that the arts can make real and meaningful transformations and change,” Professor Bennett said.

The AR works are published online, and exhibited via The Big Anxiety Festival and The Big Reach in various locations.

“It’s nice to have a space that is about mental health awareness,” Willow added.

The Block hits Monbulk

By Tyler Wright Known as down-to-earth and partial to a fiery debate on reality TV show The Block, married couple social worker Sarah-Jane and plumber Tom made the trip from their home in Gladstone Park to Monbulk’s Murphy’s Mitre 10 on Saturday 1 October for the store’s grand opening to the reception of hundreds of locals and visitors.

The farmhouse the pair built on The Block, in Gisborne, complete with a ‘dream’ fireplace in the living and dining area, seemed to appeal to locals who came along to meet the contestants.

Upwey-based couple Georgia and Jarryd Hicks are currently building their own property in Clyde, have taken inspiration from SarahJane’s beautiful accents.

“I was just telling [Sarah-Jane] I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from her,” Georgia said.

“Step outside your comfort zone and things don’t have to be traditional to last a long time... doing the colour and stuff... that’s good, It’s what makes your house warm.”

Montrose resident Howard Jones visited Mitre-10 with son Arthur, who snapped a photo with Sarah-Jane and Tom sporting tradie gear, said The Block being ‘countrified’ this season made it more relatable to different communities. “[We’re doing] some renovations the back of the house with the deck area and lots of stuff so that’s where we’re trying to get tips and tricks on the process and procedures for going through that,” Howard said.

After chatting to and snapping photos and selfies with fans, Sarah-Jane said the best part about being on The Block has been meeting people.

“We love this side of town, so it was a good excuse to get some fresh air,” Sarah-Jane said.

“I think that’s why the ratings have been so big this year, because it’s so refreshing to be on acreage, and in a regional/rural setting,” Sarah-Jane said.

“I think it appeals to a lot broader people because now it’s like ‘well, John down on his cattle farm 200 kms away is like ‘oh yeah, I live on land, and that’s cool.’

It’s more relatable and refreshing.”

Living about 25 kilometres out from the Macedon Ranges area, Sarah-Jane and Tom also got involved in The Block to fund their move out further up north.

And the journey has not come without its funny moments, with Sarah-Jane jack-knifing a car during a challenge and ruining the trailer.

“I jack-knifed that three times - they only show the one, but once I jac-knifed and then accelerated and the trailer went airborne and the whole crew was like, ‘Sarah-Jane! SarahJane!, and I was like, ‘Oh my God’.

“It was a hot mess, I hated that challenge.

But challenge days were actually normally the best day.

A helicopter ride over the Yarra Valley was one of her highlights for the season, among getting three tens from the judges for a kitchen reveal, totalling a ‘perfect 30’.

“I’ve learned that I can push myself hard-

“I’m very nervous but just excited to see if we make any money and see what happens,” Sarah-Jane said.

“I’m cool now but I reckon the day before I’ll be crapping my pants,” she said.

Tools day to help women find a new career in a trade

By Parker McKenzie A diverse group of women had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience at a Tools Skills Day, hosted by the Box Hill Institute and Empowering Women in Trades on Tuesday 27 September.

Held at the Box Hill TAFE Trade Centre in Lilydale and sponsored by Workforce Australia, the 22 women in attendance had the opportunity to try their hand at plumbing, electrical work, virtual welding and more.

Founder and CEO of Empowering Women in Trades Hacia Atherton said alongside practical skills, participants also had the opportunity to learn positive psychology and human skills.

“Understanding how to overcome their own self-doubt, tap into their courage and really lean into discomfort: I call it failing forward, failing fast and making mistakes, not beating themselves up about that,” she said.

“All of that mindset stuff to really get them into a space where they can thrive in these industries.”

Participants learned how to strip wires, wire up a power point, join pipes and watched a farrier work metal into a horseshoe in rotating workshops with industry professionals.

Breakfast menu expands

By Parker McKenzie Every weekday, volunteers from Knox Infolink put on breakfast in Boronia where members of the community can receive a warm meal, a cup of tea or coffee and stay for a chat.

Thanks to a $7,700 grant from Australian Post, they’ll soon be launching a gentle fitness program alongside the breakfast for guests to get active once a week.

Knox InfoLink Centre Manager Denise Budge said guests who attend the breakfast regularly had requested the exercise program and they were excited to be able to offer it to them.

“The breakfast program is primarily funded through the Boronia Revitalization Board. I applied for a grant to run a five-day-per-week community breakfast program that targets those that isolated, disadvantaged, homeless or hungry,” she said.

“The key thing about was having it five days a week because there are certainly meal programs available, but not a breakfast program in our local area.”

The Movement for Mental Health and Wellbeing will be a weekly exercise class for community members, running on a yet-to-be-decided weekday.

Ms Budge is on the committee of the Boronia Revitalization Board, which is chaired by Bayswater MP Jackson Taylor.

“It’s great to hear Knox Infolink have been successful in getting a grant from Australia Post, expanding on the successful Community Breakfast Program, proudly funded by the State Labor Government,” Mr Taylor said.

“The whole team at Knox Infolink do fantastic work in supporting those that need it most in our community and I can’t wait to see this next success.”

The Community Breakfast Program is held from 8pm to 10pm at the Boronia Progress Hall

on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, and at Saint Paul’s Church, Boronia on Wednesdays.

Ms Budge said the breakfast program engages with those who are hard to reach to build up a level of trust.

“Food might have been the hook when they come in for a meal, but once we get to know them we unpack what the underlying issues are and then we try to support them through a caseworker,” “This isn’t making it a whole package and it to the guests that we’re listening to what they’ve said that they want.”

Knox Infolink was one of 70 community organisations around Australia to receive a grant of up to $10,000.

Australia Post Executive General Manager of community, sustainability and stakeholder engagement Tanny Mangos said the organisation was delighted to support projects making a real difference to health and wellbeing.

“These grants help enhance community connections, and we know that when we connect with others, we feel better. We also know that this often results in improved mental health outcomes, and we want to support the organisations that are helping make this happen,” she said.

“The continued impact of the pandemic, financial pressures, isolation, and the constant demands of everyday life can all impact on mental wellbeing.”

Ms Budge said thank you to Australia Post for giving Knox Infolink the opportunity to expand the program.

“I’d also like to thank the Department of Jobs, Regions and Precincts for the overall funding of the Breakfast Program,” Ms Budge said.

“It is meeting the needs of many people that are struggling at the moment.”

Going strong for 40 years

By Parker McKenzie Knox Environment Society will celebrate its 40th Anniversary with a two-day Spring Festival at the KES Indigenous Nursery in Ferntree Gully on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 October, featuring live music, nature journaling sessions and kids’ activities.

KES President Richard Faragher said the festival is an annual event put on by the society, but this year they are celebrating the fourdecade-long milestone.

“There’s live music, there are community groups and on Saturday we’ve got a repair cafe here,” he said.

“We do demonstrations of propagations; there are friends groups that set up here and the Glenfern Potters will be attending as well.”

The community nursery will be selling plants seeds and plants during the event on Sunday, while the indigenous nursery will also be open with local plants for sale.

Mr Faragher said KES has been celebrating 40 years of existence with several events throughout the year.

“It’s just letting the community know, through a range of events, that we’ve been here for 40 years because if you just have one event you miss a whole lot of people,” he said.

“We celebrate it with our members and celebrate with the community.”

KES was founded in June 1982 and is a membership-based organisation of individuals concerned about the environment. It now has over 100 members.

Anyone interested in joining KES as a member can enquire at KES.org.au or talk to them on the day of the Spring Festival.

Upcoming works for Knox Library redevelopment Construction on the new Knox Library is set to commence as a part of the major redevelopment of Westfield Knox.

Doubling the size of the old library, the 2,000 square metre facility includes a garden room, computer area, meeting rooms, desk space, study booths, lounges, a youth area and a children’s area.

Knox City Mayor Susan Laukens said it was exciting to see work begin.

“Knox Library is our busiest branch and we expect the new library will attract a whole new clientele,” she said.

“Having a library with extended trading hours, located in a thriving shopping centre and close to plenty of parking will make it even more convenient for people to visit.”

The $3.65 million project was partially funded by the State Government through the Living Libraries Infrastructure Program.

Mayor Laukens said libraries are about so much more than just books.

“While there will still be an impressive collection of books, DVDs and other items for people to borrow, the new library will be a contemporary space where people can meet, read, study, work or just relax,” she said.

First doc to settle In 1901 the Yarra Glen community took steps to attract a doctor who would live in their own town. Up to this time they had relied on doctors who lived in Lilydale or Healesville, quite a distance when transport options were horseback, horse-drawn vehicles or the railway.

Public meetings were held and in January 1902 the residents were canvassed regarding their willingness to contribute higher rates to provide the doctor with a salary of £200 per annum. In February 1902 Dr John Taylor Chapman of Ballan was chosen from nine applicants.

Some people who did not want to, or were unable to attend a doctor, sent their queries to newspaper columnists. A Yarra Glen resident wrote to The Leader with a question about ‘red, itchy spots, size of a three penny piece, all over the body, covered with white scales. The answer was … psoriasis. Take a hot bath and scrub the spots with a brush and soap till the scales come off. Then apply the following ointment constantly: liquor carbanis detergens, 1 dr.; white precipitate ointment, 2 dr.; simple ointment, 1 oz. Take the following medicine three times a day after meals: solution of arsenic, 5 mms; water ½ oz.

In his annual report to Council in 1903 Dr Chapman reported that there were four cases of scarlet fever, two of typhoid and one of diphtheria. As Inspector of Nuisances (places harbouring potential infection) he found most places in a satisfactory condition, but he recommended that wood ashes be used as a cheap and effective disinfectant in the closets (toilets). The doctor also noted that heavy rains had thoroughly flushed out the drains and gutters, concluding that it was a good rea-

This would enable regular cleansing of the town’s drainage system as well as reducing the danger from fires. In 1904 he warned that the ‘luxuriant growth of grass this year’ was a danger to the children – ‘that is, their getting their feet wet going to school and having to sit with damp feet all day.’

Measles was common and often fatal. James McPherson, aged 24, had recently returned from a visit to Western Australia in August 1905 when he fell ill with measles and inflammation of the bowel. He died suddenly on Sunday 13 August.

Reports of typhoid fever in Dixons Creek were made to the Council in January 1909. The Inspector of Nuisances was instructed to immediately inspect the creek itself from Gunn’s Bridge upstream, as it was the source of domestic water supply for residents. Cases of typhoid in Yarra Glen also caused alarm and the school was closed, as was often the case during an outbreak.

Accidents occurred frequently and circumstances dictated whether someone was sent to fetch the doctor or the patient was taken to the

doctor. Either way, it was usually a journey on horseback or by horse and cart. A telephone service was established in Yarra Glen in 1908 but was not extended to other areas such as Steels Creek, Dixons Creek and Christmas Hills until 1913.

The hazardous operation of working with bullock teams was one where the weight of the loads and the rough terrain over which they often travelled resulted in serious accidents. In November 1902, William Hall of Dixons Creek was taking a team down a hill. Hastening to apply the brake he failed to move away quickly and the wheel of the loaded wagon passed over his foot: but the ground must have been soft.

He was taken to Yarra Glen where Dr Chapman was able to reassure him that no bones were broken and no great harm had been done.

A month later, Mr William Albert, the local butcher, had a serious accident during one of his rounds at Christmas Hills. His horse fell and threw him out of the cart after which one of the wheels passed over him. He was unconscious for some time, but also recovered under the care of Dr Chapman.

Roads in bad condition were another hazard for all types of vehicles. A commercial traveller, Mr Caudwell, was driving to Healesville from Yarra Glen when his cart hit a rut and he was dragged for some distance by the bolting horses until the reins broke. Despite broken ribs and bruising he followed and retrieved his horses. He managed to reach the home of Mr Elliott where he was attended by Dr Chapman.

Being away from home Caudwell was taken to the Burgoyne Hotel to recuperate.

Important issues in reader development

By Christine Yunn-Yu Sun, Book Reviewer, The Star Mail This is the second in a series of three articles featuring the 2022 Cities of Literature Meeting hosted by Melbourne, our own UNESCO City of Literature since 2008.

As part of the 2022 Cities of Literature Network Meeting recently held in Melbourne, representatives from cities around the world agreed on one thing at the “Reader Development” Roundtable.

That is, during the COVID pandemic lockdowns in the past two years, the number of active readers plummeted. In contrast, existing readers were reading more but felt reluctant to stray away from their familiar authors and genres.

Specifically, as readers favoured comfort rather than adventure, sales skyrocketed in “cozy” genres such as romance, true crime and science fiction.

Still, comprehensive data from libraries, publishers and booksellers are needed in order to understand how reading behaviours. patterns and tastes have changed.

An equally urgent question is how to cultivate new readers while encouraging existing

population have a foreign background. With parents often speaking different languages at home, children have no real “first language”.

This makes it difficult for them to “sit and read together and have that special bond”.

According to Gothenburg City of Literature website, starting in 2015, “The City Where We Read to Our Children” is a community-wide effort to raise awareness and increase knowledge of the importance of reading aloud.

By reading to children, parents can help increase their vocabulary, their love of reading, and their reading skills. “Taking action early on in a child’s life will have a profound effect both for the child here and how, but also for the entire society.”

Josh Fomon from Seattle highlighted the city’s efforts to work with writers of African descent as well as writers of colour to promote inclusiveness and cultivate leadership.

He also lamented the fact that earlier this year, a librarian in Texas was fired due to her refusal to remove books featuring LGBTQ people’s life experiences.

It seems crucial that conversations about the importance of diversity and inclusion take place not just in libraries and bookstores but also across whole communities.

Starring Allison Janney, Jurnee Smollett and Logan Marshall-Green Rated MA15+ 4/5 Lou is a taut character-driven survivalist thriller.

During a heavy storm, Lou (Allison Janney) and her neighbour Hannah (Jurnee Smollett) must track down and rescue the latter’s daughter from her sociopathic father Philip (Logan MarshallGreen).

Janney has a commanding strength and precision as Lou, and the first act succinctly establishes Lou as a hardy, solitary woman with underlying trauma without beating us over the head with back-story.

As Lou and Hannah venture into the wilderness to find Hannah’s daughter Vee (Ridley Bateman), Lou’s past is steadily revealed and her skills are tested in short but nail-biting encounters.

Director Anna Foerster shows a strong command of geography, weather and fatigue in her suspense, and the dialogue has a layer of wry wit and an engaging tactical texture.

The fight sequences are exciting while being realistically rough and messy.

Marshall-Green is a compelling, nuanced antagonist as Philip, a seeminglyloving father who cannot handle any loss of control.

Lou and Hannah grow together across the narrative: the steely Lou shows suppressed care and concern for Hannah and Vee, and Hannah becomes more confident and focused.

Well-seeded details return in clever ways later on, and the climax is a satisfying culmination of violence, cunning and family ties.

The only weak link in the plot is the somewhat nebulous connection between Lou and Philip.

Lou is a lean, brutal thriller with rich dialogue and character writing, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

readers to “take risks”. Particularly when government funding and subsidies dwindle in an apparent effort to encourage “living with the virus”, it is critical to find innovative and sustainable ways to engage and develop new readers.

A variety of precious lessons were shared.

For example, Sylvain Pothier-Lerous and Gerard Desaphy from Angoulême – the French city renowned for its reputation in the field of comics and more broadly in the image industry – explained how they worked with the Meiji University’s Yoshihiro Yonezawa Memorial Library of Manga and Subcultures in Tokyo to promote manga and connect with readers.

Andrea Edel from Heidelberg emphasised the importance of providing readers with more access and resources. In that city, reading is promoted as a way to enhance our wellbeing, not just for education or pleasure.

Adult readers are targeted as role models for their children, and as initiators of much needed conversations about books and reading. “Read and talk together” can be therapeutic at home, particularly in these unusual and uncertain times.

Gearing up for the season with its first uninterrupted pre-season since the beginning of the pandemic, Belgrave Cricket Club treasurer Craig Poxon said there are hopes to add a second women’s senior side.

“The introduction of female sport, not only across cricket, but with football and then Netball being added to Belgrave [Recreation] Reserve has really shifted the culture a lot now,” Poxon said.

“It’s become a lot more of a family environment, and I think we’ve had a bit of a younger leadership crew come through, and everyone’s just sort of changing our perspectives postCovid.

We’ve really tried to do a lot of things with the local community... like [being] on the radio... and we’ve been running some business network nights at the Belgrave Hotel, we did one and then we’re gonna do one at the club soon.”

According Poxon, the club is also approaching its largest year in terms of sponsorship.

“We just got the number three cricket club in Victoria for engagement and content on the last quarter, which was pretty awesome, because we’re such a small club,” Poxon said.

The club achieved this feat by publishing 77 Facebook posts between June and August seeing it come in third for amount of posts.

The club also received 2,214 reactions, comments and shares during the same time period, earning them sixth spot in engagemement out of Victorian cricket clubs.

Poxon said the club has also introduced its first all-girls Under 14 junior side.

As part of the cricket off season, Belgrave Cricket Club held a trial for a mixed gender indoor team at Knox Indoor Sports.

Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club was one of more than 150 Victorian football and Netball clubs to receive a grant for their commitment to promoting road safety in the community.

The grants, through the TAC Club Rewards Program, rewarded clubs for educating members and players on highrisk driving behaviour like drink-driving, speeding, driving while tired and being distracted on the road.

Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club President Mark Godfrey said the $1000 reward would be used for medical tape to keep the players on the park next season.

“On average, we spend between eight and $10,000 dollars a season on medical tape,” he said.

“I’ll take $500 at the moment, so any money is great for the club. We really appreciate the TAC putting it up.”

Clubs were able to apply for the program by showing TAC how they supported road safety, including taking part in the Road Safety Round from 15 to 17 July.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said local sporting clubs are the backbone of the community.

“The TAC Club Rewards program is another great initiative that incentivises clubs to spread an important message and influence change,” he said.

“We are proud to support the longstanding partnership between the TAC and AFL Victoria, which provides a platform to educate hundreds of thousands of Victorians on road safety issues through local sport.”

187 people have lost their lives on Victorian roads this year.

TAC Head of Road Safety Samantha Cockfield said it was encouraging to see the commitment of football and netball clubs to educate the community on road safety.

“Their actions will undoubtedly have a lasting and positive impact on the lives of their members.”

Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club is currently looking to fill coaching and playing positions ahead of the 2023 season, with a women’s coach and players, reserve team players and coaches and line coaches for the senior men’s positions available.

“I think there’s just a real desire to connect back with the community...people definitely want to be in their local community more and be active and be a part of it,” Poxon said.

Poxon added the club’s prerogative is ensure players and community can take the field this season, regardless of the financial impacts induced by Covid.

“That everyone gets access to a community sports environment that enables them to do the things that look after their mental well being, but beyond that; we want to keep seeing our junior program grow and the kids enjoy the game and build those pathways into senior cricket,” he said.

“And if we’re lucky, we wouldn’t mind seeing a couple of premierships somewhere along the way.”
