Trending art show in Pakenham The latest trends in the art world are on display in Cardinia Art Society’s current exhibition.

The Trending Art Show, currently being held at Cardinia Cultural Centre, is an exhibition of contemporary art that highlights the latest trends and gives artists an opportunity to display their most creative works.

The gift shop also also proved popular, with 1500 items for sale.

About 90 artists, including many new artists, are exhibiting about 270 works in the exhibition, showcasing trends like sculpture, flow art, resin and mixed media.

Cardinia Shire councillors have slammed the Department of Environment Land Water Planning (DELWP) for not committing funding to link 600Ha of parkland between Beaconsfield and Clyde.

Located on the traditional Country of the Bunurong land, the Cardinia Creek Regional Parklands would link much-loved existing parks including Cardinia Creek Regional Park

and Grasmere Wetlands, Akoonah Park, Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna Reserve, Beaconsfield Recreation Reserve, Beaconsfield Park, Manna Gum Park, Mick Morland and Bob Burgess Reserve.

The parklands have been gradually established over the past 20 years, with hopes to acquire additional land by 2040 to link the parks that weave along Cardinia Creek in both Cardinia and Casey municipalities.

Councillor Stephanie Davies agreed.

“It is a very important environmental and recreational space and it’s exciting for our shire,” she said.

“It is really disappointing that no funding is allocated, unfortunately this has happened before with projects and investments that look great on paper but aren’t realised.”

Cardinia Shire will write a letter to DELWP expressing its concern and asking that funding is allocated to ensure the outcomes of the plan can be delivered.

The future of the Parklands involves a collaborative plan by stakeholders including Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) in partnership with Parklands Partners Casey City Council, Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation, Cardinia Shire Council, Melbourne Water and Parks Victoria.

In a council meeting on 20 September, City of Casey administrators endorsed the plan and

announced they would also advocate to the State Government for funding allocation.

“It remains a significant priority… to ensure we do achieve the requirements and the activities listed in the plan and that we do continue to advocate to the State Government for funding allocation to see that the plans realisation actually does occur,” City of Casey administrator Cameron Boardman said.

Libs promise event boost

By Hugh Pearson Pakenham Liberal candidate David Farrelly has pledged $100,000 annually to the Baba Budha Ji Sports Club’s annual Khed Mela event, if the Liberals are elected in this year’s State Election.

Baba Budha Ji Sports Club Pakenham hosted the fourth annual Khed Mela event on Sunday 25 September.

“This is a fantastic local event for the Sikh community enjoying musical performances, a local market, kids amusement rides as well as participating in sporting competitions throughout the day including cricket, badminton and volleyball, as well as the traditional activity of kabadd,” Mr Farrelly said.

Participants travelled from far and wide to make it to the Pakenham-based event.

One team travelled from New Zealand, while others travelled from Shepparton, Sydney and Adelaide.

“With around 8000 people attending the event throughout the day, and about 6000 visitors attracted to Pakenham from outside the region it’s not only a popular event for locals but it helps to grow local tourism and boost small business in the area,” he said.

Baba Budha Ji Sports Club Pakenham secretary Charan Sodhi said the event costs approximately $150,000.

The money is used for musical performances, markets, food and amusement rides.

“With a guaranteed $100,000 from a Liberal Government, the event can enjoy planning to grow its participation and activities to become the biggest event of its kind in Melbourne,” Mr Farrelly said.

Mr Sodhi said the event was a success and it was great to see people enjoy the “beautiful sunny day”.

Focus on prevention: Cardinia advocating for safety Connect with local services at community information sessions hosted by Cardinia Shire Council this October as part of Community Safety Month.

The month-long advocacy campaign is an opportunity for local communities to link together and coordinate activities to create safe and secure environments.

Mayor Jeff Springfield said the council was committed to working with key services and the community in creating a safer Cardinia.

“The council is committed to community safety and our recently adopted Liveability Plan includes five overarching objectives and 13 strategies all aimed at improving safety within the shire,” Mayor Springfield said.

The actions undertaken by the Liveabil-

ity Plan are reviewed every 12 months by the council and the Safer Communities Partnership Committee to ensure it remains relevant and meets its objectives.

Mayor Springfield said the Council Plan also outlines that council will empower communities to be healthy, connected and resilient; how the council will work together to support everyone to be healthy, active and connected; that the council wants individuals feel included, safe and valued for who they are; and that the council will have zero tolerance for all forms of discrimination.

“The Council Plan also outlines that the council will create a Safer Communities Policy and incorporate Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED),” Mayor Springfield said.

“A key role council plays in responding to crime and antisocial behaviour is providing our community with information and prevention opportunities.

“Opportunities and activities where council can play a lead role in responding to crime and antisocial behaviour include creating connections with our community, helping to build awareness, and delivering information and educational messages.

“An example of this is through our monthly Cardinia Safer Communities Partnership Committee meetings. These meetings support the work of Victoria Police through the collaboration of police, the council, community, safety experts, and other stakeholders.

“We’ll continue to work closely with, and support, Victoria Police’s efforts in improving

public safety across the shire.”

A Safer Cardinia – Community Safety Month activities include a Community Safety Pop-Up Pakenham 11am–1pm, 5 October at Pakenham Library Hall; Community Safety Pop-Up Cockatoo 11am–1pm, 12 October at Cockatoo IGA Supermarket; Community Safety Pop-Up Bunyip 11am–1pm, 19 October at Bunyip IGA Supermarket, and Community Safety Pop-Up in Lang Lang 11am– 1pm, 26 October at Lang Lang Dick Jones Reserve.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I had blue eyes until I was 8 years old and then they turned green like my Dad’s! I also moved to Australia around the same time from New Zealand.

What do you love about what you do?

I really love getting to play pretend as an adult. I think we all lose a big part of that child-like urge to “play” as we grow up. Acting is such a creative outlet and you get to explore so many different characters worlds, my anxiety disappears when I am pretending to be someone else so it’s very freeing in that sense also.

Who is the best person you’ve worked with and why?

Without a doubt, Cassidy Krygger. We first met in acting classes in 2015 and I never would have imagined that we would now be creating films together. She is such a resilient and inspiring person and also an incredibly talented actor and creator. She allows me the space as an actor and a person to be completely myself with no judgement, she creates an incredibly safe space to create in and is always so supportive and encouraging. I can’t say enough good things about her.

What would your last meal be?

A vegie cali burrito meal from Guzman y Gomez with churros and an espresso martini.

What is your most memorable moment?

I think my most memorable moment would be hiking at Griffith Park in LA with a bunch of the girls I was studying there with and we were all just so blissfully happy watching the sun set over the Hollywood sign and we all had such a shared sense of joy that we were in the right place at the right time with the right people.

After that we all got stuck in the dark with no phone signal and there were a bunch of coyotes.

What event past or present would you like to witness?

I would love to go back and attend the first burning man.

I would cook a vegie taco bowl! This is one of my favourite things to make and so easy but delicious.

Where is your dream holiday destination?

I would love to go to China with my Grandma as my step-Grandad who passed was from there and he was always such a strong figure in my life, encouraging us all to be our best selves and strive for greatness so seeing where he grew up would be really special.

What were you like as a kid?

I was always in bare feet and up trees! I was ex-

tremely strong willed (usually referred to as the black sheep) and ran away from home many a time. I remember I hated having my photo taken and would hide if someone had a camera out which is ironic now given I’ve chosen to pursue a career in front of a camera. I also used to really love singing and would write song lyrics in the front covers of all of my books so my family initially thought that singing was the career I would pursue.

What was your first job?

My first job was at a bakery in Hampton Park just serving the counter a couple of nights after school!

What are the three most used apps on your phone?

Tik Tok, Instagram and Messenger.

What’s one question that you have always wanted answered?

What’s up with the Bermuda triangle? Are we still worried about that because I can remember being very concerned about it as a child and this doesn’t seem to be an issue on my mind as an adult.

Push to ramp up burn-offs The Howitt Society’s e-petition calling for an increase in fuel reduction burning has been tabled in State Parliament.

It was sponsored by Shadow Assistant Minister for Public Land Use and The Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region, Melina Bath.

Consistent with the 2009 Bushfire Royal Commission recommendations, the e-petition calls on the State Government to increase the area of planned low intensity burns across Victoria’s forests.

Ms Bath said regional Victorians and many public land managers were “fed up with the State Government’s failure to meet its own low annual fuel reduction target”.

“Victorian forests need to be actively managed utilising regular low-intensity mosaic burns, which incorporate, where possible, methods practised by Traditional Owners in the past,” she said.

“Bushfire mitigation through low-intensity fire should be performed throughout the cooler months to remove excess undergrowth on the forest floor.

“The Howitt Society is correct in its assertion that fire is a natural phenomenon in Victoria, but catastrophic widespread bushfire over enormous areas of forest is not natural.”

Ms Bath said the Howitt Society is Victorian-based with a membership consisting of experienced land and fire managers, scientists, foresters, anthropologists and historians. Ms Bath said members have a wealth of knowledge about the bush and public land management.

“The Howitt Society’s petition sends a strong message to the Andrews Government that Labor’s poor record and inadequate approach to bushfire mitigation in Victoria must be overhauled,” she said.

“This educated and experienced group is justifiably disturbed that the Andrews Government has blatantly dismissed the Bushfire

A 44-year-old Lynbrook woman has been arrested following the discovery of a quantity of Methyl-amphetamine during a search warrant on Monday 26 September.

Police attended the Stelvio Close address in Lynbrook and cleared the premises, spoke to the two occupants of the premises and located the illicit substance.

The 44-year-old was arrested at the scene and charged with possess Methyl-amphetamine. She was bailed to appear before the Dandenong Magistrates Court on 27 February, police said.

She was also charged for an unrelated theft incident from earlier this year, however, she was released pending summons in relation to the theft incident.

By Hugh Pearson Casey Cardinia Libraries are seeking donations for their local history collection archive.

They’re requesting residents of Casey and Cardinia donate books, documents, maps, images, artworks and diaries documenting the local area.

“We’re using the donation drive to try and get our community involved in recording the history because that’s what our archive is, a community archive for the documents from people, places and groups in the community,” local historian for Casey, Kate Davis said.

“We’ll be keeping stuff that’s donated safely for generations to come so it will be secure and people will be able to access it later.”

Items the Casey Cardinia Libraries receive will be catalogued and available online, although some - due to copyright problems won’t be made available online.

“They’ll be catalogued but as to whether they’re online or not depends on the type of item it is because with images and stuff like that there are certain permissions tied to it,” Ms Davis said.

“Most stuff we’ll try to find a way to get it online and available.”

Residents of Casey and Cardinia will also be able to book appointments with the Cranbourne Library to see the archive in person.

High hopes for precinct

By Marcus Uhe The future of Casey Fields continues to take shape on the back of the adoption of the updated Casey Fields Master Plan at the City of Casey’s Tuesday 20 September administrator meeting.

The initial plan, first adopted in 2018, required a minor update in order to reflect the council’s new partnerships such as the relocation of A-League side Melbourne City Football Club to the precinct, and infrastructure development, including a fitness trail and a dogfriendly space.

Projects with funding included in the 2022/23 Capital Works Budget include pavilion upgrades for Casey Fields Ovals four and five, incorporating the Metropolitan Cricket and Community Centre, worth $3.2 million, stage two of the Casey Fields Regional Soccer project worth $5.7 million and stage two of the Casey Fields Fitness trail, worth $1.5 million.

Administrator Cameron Boardman spoke glowingly of the precinct’s potential, describing it as on track to become a leader in its field.

“There is no doubt that Casey Fields, if it is not already, will transform into one of the state’s premier sporting and recreation destinations, and probably even be an exemplar nationally,” Mr Boardman said.

“With future investment and leadership at this end at by those who are tenants and advocates and promoters of the precinct, there is no doubt in my mind that in 20 years post, all of the aspects contained in the master plan will be fully realised.”

Among the sports set to benefit most include tennis, athletics, netball, cycling and soccer, with a regional soccer stadium flagged

by Mr Boardman as a potential host of ALeague games.

In seconding the motion, administrator Miguel Belmar highlighted the benefits for the whole community.

“The vision also includes an informal open space network, and it’s important to consider that the facilities that are proposed at Casey Fields in the long-term are not just for elite level sports, they’re also for active recreation by members of the community who want to use the facilities for their family and for their own personal fitness,” Mr Belmar said.

“I note, for example, the discussion in the papers with respect to the regional playspace, the village green, a fitness trail, a linear park, a dog friendly space and facility of a like-nature which will ensure that visitors at Casey Fields need not pull on the boots and have a run on the field to be able to enjoy, but can go there and simply enjoy the space and a council facility which is world-class, not only for elite sport but also world-class for passive and active recreation.”

Implementation will continue in the 2022/23 financial year, with future projects subject to the council’s annual budget process, according to the council.

The pair announced a re-elected Andrews Labor Government would contribute $550,000 towards the Robert Booth Reserve for the refurbishment of the Hampton Park Tennis Club Pavilion.

The commitment builds on a $3 million two-storey pavillion for AFL, cricket and netball at Robert Booth Reserve which is in the process of being developed.

By Marcus Uhe The EPA issued SBI Inert Landfill with a further two improvement notices on Wednesday 21 September, requiring the creation of a Stormwater Management Plan and a Leachate Management Plan.

Stagnant water mixing with hydrogen sulphite on site was the original source of the rotten-eggs style odour that has been plaguing residents of Cranbourne and Botanic Ridge.

The water was taken offsite during July, with the process concluding on Thursday 21 July.

Suction trucks were also used to remove excess storm water from the landfill site, SBI said.

The first notice requires SBI to fulfil their General Environmental Duty in relation to their management of surface water.

SBI must install and implement contaminated water controls that ensure no contaminated water is discharged beyond the premises boundary, including water contaminated with waste or sediment, by 19 October.

A Stormwater Management Plan must be provided by SBI to the EPA by 4 January, having engaged a “suitably qualified person” to prepare the plan by 23 November.

The second notice will require SBI to provide a Leachate Management Plan to the EPA and engage a suitably qualified person to conduct leachate sampling by 11 November, after engaging a suitably qualified person to prepare the plan by 21 October.

Sampling results must be provided to the EPA by 30 November.

“SBI have been continuing to work to calibrate the newly installed landfill gas extraction system, which is now operating to eliminate odourous gas from the landfill before it enters the atmosphere,” Mr Williamson said.

“Further works on adjusting the system to maximise its performance will continue over the coming weeks.

“We thank for the community for their patience while we work to address this issue.”

Leachate is contaminated liquid generated by water passing through a landfill or waste disposal site, and accumulating contaminates in the process.

Safety concerns have forced Parks Victoria to close the Warneet South Jetty.

A recent independent engineering assessment concluded the jetty needed closing “to ensure public safety”, a Parks Victoria spokesperson said.

“We understand the importance of Warneet South Jetty to the local community and will continue to work with Better Boating Victoria as part of the Warneet Boating Precinct Plan,” the spokesperson said.

Better Boating Victoria released plans for the Warneet Boating Precinct, which incorporates the jetties at Warneet North and Warneet South, in December 2021.

A 3.6-metre-wide replacement jetty, realigned northwards by roughly three metres to reduce congestion in the water and ramp access area, was listed as a Marine Precinct Improvement Opportunity in the concept plan for Warneet South, after receiving feedback from the community to identify key priorities in late 2021.

Other feedback received by Better Boating Victoria included the need for an upgraded car park and boat ramp at Warneet South.

‘Urgent attention’ needed

By Marcus Uhe Transport infrastructure, employment opportunities and vital services and projects will be the focus of the City of Casey’s advocacy to election candidates ahead of the 26 November State Election.

Among the areas identified by the council in need of “urgent attention” is the construction of critical road and rail infrastructure, including Thompsons Road upgrade and extension, Clyde Road Corridor upgrade, and Clyde Rail Link, locally-based training and employment services, improved mobile connectivity and investment in affordable and social housing dwellings.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff PSM said council was seeking support to meet the needs of the city’s rapidly growing community.

“Our growing population needs more investment than ever before,” Ms Duff said.

“With more than 5000 new families calling Casey home every year, we are Victoria’s most populous municipality. In fact, our population of more than 390,000 residents is forecast to grow to more than 550,000 by 2041.

“That’s why it’s so important that we continue to advocate for critical projects and services our community needs and deserves.”

Ms Duff said the council’s Connecting Casey advocacy campaign had been developed using community feedback and insights from the Council Plan 2021-25.

“The top three areas in which the community wants to see more investment are roads and public transport, local job opportunities, and health services and facilities,” Ms Duff said.

“We’ve listened to what our community has told us, and we know that these areas are what’s most important to ensure we cater for current and future growth and that we support our community to become more connected and resilient.

An upgrade to Thompsons Road has been identified as needing “urgent attention” by the City of Casey ahead of the State Election in November. 156034 “We want local State Members of Parliament and candidates to have a clear understanding of what our community needs to thrive, now and into the future.

“We know that our growing communities need access to employment, services, facilities and major infrastructure close to home now, not 10 to 20 years down the track.”

Ms Duff said council would continue to advocate for funding and support for these vital infrastructure projects and other key advocacy priorities to help address the needs of the Casey community.

The council wrote to and met with candidates to provide them with an overview of

priority projects and would continue to work with the community to seek their support and raise the profile of what matters most heading towards election day, the City of Casey said.

Council will host a Metropolitan Transport Forum (MTF) event on Wednesday 19 October at Bunjil Place, which will provide community members with the opportunity to hear the transport plans of the major political parties and to ask questions.

The event will be chaired by City of Casey administrator Cameron Boardman and speakers will include Brad Battin (Liberal Gembrook MP), Michael Galea (Labor candidate for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region) and Alex Breskin (Greens candidate for the

South-Eastern Metropolitan Region).

The event will be livestreamed and attendees are invited to submit questions for consideration ahead of time.

“We look forward to working in partnership with the newly elected Victorian Government to deliver on projects that will help boost local jobs, stimulate our economy and support our community during the next term of government,” Ms Duff said.

Toxic waste not wanted

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The long-sought closure of the Lyndhurst toxic waste dump has been belatedly added to Greater Dandenong Council’s state election wish-list.

Councillor Rhonda Garad had queried at a 12 September council meeting why the issue wasn’t intially part of the council’s advocacy document.

It led to council directors adding it to the council’s “formal documentation and advocacy web page”.

City planning director Jody Bosman said despite the omission, the council wanted the site closed “as soon as possible”. “(While it) is not in our advocacy document per se, like many other matters that the Council advocates on, the closure of the Lyndhurst landfill site will continue to be one of those that we advocate for at every opportunity.

“That it is not in the document on the website, does not mean that we are any less committed to seeing the closure of it as soon as possible.”

The controversial issue had been a fixture in the council’s advocacy documents at past elections.

According to the latest document, the

council had expressed “grave concern” and “opposition” to contaminated waste at Lyndhurst tip for more than 25 years.

The State Government had pledged the dumping of prescribed industrial wastes would continue until 2020.

“It is now 2022 and the Minister for Planning … has since the last election approved planning permits for uses on the site which in fact increases the longevity of the site, despite the City of Greater Dandenong lodging strong opposition to these,” the document stated.

This refers to SUEZ Recycling and Recovery Australia being granted a permit by the State Government in July to separate packaged food waste on the 890 Taylors Road site.

Greater Dandenong Council, which was consulted, opposed the project.

According to the State Government, a time limit was imposed on the recycling plant’s permit to “cease on the closure of the landfill”.

The landfill had started under the auspices of the then Shire of Cranbourne. It was inherited by Greater Dandenong after council amalgamations in the mid 1990’s.

It has a potential to remain open beyond 2046, Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio told Parliament in 2019.

How to protect your info

By Marcus Uhe The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Scamwatch is warning Optus customers to be on the look out for scams and take steps to secure their personal information following a cyberattack, which has resulted in the release of Optus customers’ personal information.

Names, date of birth, phone numbers, and email addresses of Optus customers may have been released, and for some customers identity document numbers such as driver’s licence or passport numbers could be in the hands of criminals, the ACCC said.

“It is important to be aware that you be may be at risk of identity theft and take urgent action to prevent harm,” the ACCC said in a statement on Thursday 22 September.

“Optus customers should take immediate steps to secure all of their accounts, particularly their bank and financial accounts.

“You should also monitor for unusual activity on your accounts and watch out for contact by scammers.”

Optus released a statement on Thursday 22 September saying it immediately shut down the attack upon its discovery.

“Optus is working with the Australian Cyber Security Centre to mitigate any risks to customers,” the statement read.

“Optus has also notified the Australian Federal Police, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and key regulators.”

Advice offered by the ACCC to protect your personal information included: Secure your devices and monitor for unusual activity.

Change your online account passwords and enable multi-factor authentication for banking.

Check your accounts for unusual activity such as items you haven’t purchased.

Pursuit clarity is needed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A State coroner has made no adverse findings against police or road authorities over an iceaffected driver’s fatal crash after running over stop sticks in Dandenong North.

John Jacob Beirouti, 42 at the time, died after his SUV lost control on an uneven section of Stud Road and slammed into a median-strip tree and burst into flames early on Sunday 24 January, 2021.

Mr Beirouti was estimated to be travelling between 96km/h and 122 km/h in the 80 km/h zone.

Coroner Simon McGregor on 19 September found the Carnegie driver’s loss of control was caused by a combination of factors, including his SUV’s driver-side tyres being deflated by stop sticks.

The incident was the only fatality involving stop-sticks between 2016 and 2021, he stated.

Speeding, the driver’s methamphetamine intake, and a large depression in the road surface were also factors.

“It is not possible to ascribe with any certainty the relative contributions each of these factors made,” Mr McGregor stated.

“Safe to say that neither the undulations in the road surface nor the deflated tyres, operating in isolation, would have been sufficient to have caused Mr Beirouti to lose control of his vehicle.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I am not making any adverse comment or finding in respect of either Victoria Police or the Department of Transport.”

However, Mr McGregor recommended clearer guidelines on police pursuits and attempted intercepts.

Prior to the crash, Mr Beirouti was followed by police for about eight kilometres after he ran a red arrow at the corner of Stud and Ferntree Gully roads about 3.30am.

Under police protocols, stop-sticks were justified due to him being wanted for arrest over an intervention order breach in Narre Warren days earlier.

In 2017, he was jailed for family violence, burglary and drug-related offences. In 2020, his parole had been revoked due to family violence offences.

On 16 January 2021, Mr Beirouti had broken into his ex-partner’s house via a bathroom window in Narre Warren.

Mr Beirouti, who grew up in Dandenong North, Endeavour Hills and Western Australia, had shown promise as an Aussie Rules footballer.

He was described by family as “happy but paranoid” while on ice.

At the time, he believed the police were tracking and bugging him. He’d told his mother hours earlier that police were chasing him and he didn’t want to go back to jail.

Mr McGregor stated there was “ambiguity and a clear conflict” in Victoria Police’s pursuit and stop-sticks policies.

In this case, police were not justified to pursue the SUV but could authorise stop sticks.

However, during deployment of stop-sticks, back-up units were required to follow the car to arrest the driver.

“In my opinion, it is critical that there is clear and unambiguous policy surrounding Victoria Police’s conduct in respect of vehicle intercepts that may then escalate to either extended follows or pursuits.

“As experience shows, attempted intercepts are evolving, dynamic situations where human behaviour can be unpredictable, solely based on the presence and subsequent conduct of a police vehicle.”

Soon after their initial encounter at Ferntree Gully Road, police units called off a pursuit of the SUV but followed largely at a distance with lights and sirens off.

The SUV was driven mainly within the 80km/h limit but ran a further red light at Wellington Road and then accelerated.

Mr McGregor was satisfied that the stopsticks were appropriately deployed at Brady and Stud Roads after a comprehensive risk assessment by a police supervisor.

The coroner also found the Stud Road surface was roadworthy for vehicles driven under normal conditions.

According to the Department of Transport, the two large undulations in the right lane of Stud Road were caused by “sinking” in the “old wetlands”.

The site had been posted with temporary signs warning of a ‘rough surface’ ahead of future resurfacing works.

‘Connect more deeply with culture’: Berwick’s Bollywood

By Eleanor Wilson Sahana Rudresh said she was born with an interest in Bollywood dance.

For friend and fellow student Kohana, it was a matter of expanding her horizons beyond the scope of academia.

The pair attend Berwick’s Nossal High School, regarded as one of the best government schools in the state.

But the selective-entry school is slowly branching out from its strong academic foundation, and Sahana and Kohana are at the cusp.

The Year 12 students are captains and choreographers of the school’s Bollywood Club - a niche extracurricular offering in its own right.

The club has several dozen members who regularly perform colourful Bollywood dance performances at school assemblies and community events throughout Berwick.

In late August, the club ventured to Williamstown to compete in the High School Dance Competition - a statewide freestyle dance contest using Bollywood dance music and styles.

The theme ‘life goes on’ guided the group’s five-minute routine - an intricate medley of upbeat Bollywood tunes, modern pop music and theatrical Bollywood ballads.

They returned home with a silver medal.

“It’s a very proud moment for me to see our school having a club like this, which isn’t very common in other schools, and it is kind of starting to branch out and we’re having

that influence on others. It’s really good to see that.”

Sahana’s experience with Indian dancing takes her back to her earliest memories, dancing along to Bollywood songs her moth-

er would play for her on the television.

When she was 10, she joined a classical dance school which taught bharatanatyam, a traditional Indian dance style.

It was there, Sahana said, she discovered the first inkling of her passion for Bollywood.

“At first I was hesitant because I was leaning towards more modern dancing, but my mum put me into this cultural art form and so I learned a lot of traditional concepts,” she said.

“That really helped me understand the tie between Bollywood and its roots and that encouraged me to pursue dance.”

People of Indian ancestry make up 9.3 per cent of Casey residents, the most prevalent heritage outside of English and Australian, so perhaps it is not so surprising that local students are finding interest in activites beyond the scope of chess or choir.

As they graduate from Nossal High at the end of the year, the pair hope to go on to study in the allied health and medicine fields, but they are confident Bollywood club offerings will begin to pop up in school newsletters and on notice boards in schools across Melbourne.

“My younger sister came along to watch the competition and she wants to start a Bollywood club at her school next year,” Kohana said.

“Just to see how much of an impact Bollywood dance has made at school and outside, it’s an amazing feeling and I think it’s one of the best things about dance.”

Handwriting vital to literacy skills for children A recent study has investigated the links between handwriting and other literacy skills in young children, finding that handwriting automaticity, or fluency, predicted writing quality and reading skills a year later. The researchers warn that a shift to “paperless schools” does not have strong empirical support and that it could potentially have a negative impact on students’ literacy.

Dr Anabela Malpique of Murdoch University and Associate Professor Deborah Pino-Pasternak of University of Canberra conducted the study, which involved 154 students and 24 teachers across seven Perth schools. They wanted to understand the effect handwriting automaticity has on children’s later literacy skills.

“A growing body of research argues specific cognitive benefits of handwriting during early childhood, including brain development, working memory, translation of thought-to-script, and overall writing quality and production.”

Despite the widespread use of technology and the current digital literacy agenda, handwriting plays a unique and fundamental role in writing development. Anecdotally described as “thinking with a pencil”, handwriting involves the integration of visual-perceptual, fine and gross motor skills with cognition While it might be tempting to dismiss the importance of handwriting as simply cosmetic, handwriting in fact underpins many higher functions of writing. The researchers note that poor handwriting automaticity hinders vocabulary selection, ideation and revision, while also affecting motivation, writing development and, in turn, academic success. Automatic letter writing has been found to be the best unique predictor of the writing skills of early developing writers, theoretically supported by the notion that the translation of ideas into written text relies heavily on the writers’ ability to retrieve alphabet letters in memory and produce these letter forms efficiently, legibly, and automatically.

The researchers note that their study’s findings, well aligned with recent neuroimaging studies, question the empirical foundations of digital only efforts in schools today. In a time when handwriting is being replaced by digital writing devices, research is showing that such a move could be counterproductive.

Of particular concern to the researchers were the teaching practices reported.

Year One students spent less than 50 minutes per day practicing writing, which is the minimum recommended, while across the board there was great variability in the time students spent on writing. Writing time and instruction ranged from 30 to 120 minutes per week.

The researchers also note that Australian teachers may be focusing too much on basic skills rather than teaching writing processes such as planning for writing and learning strategies to revise the quality of their texts.

“This may be problematic since research with primary students suggests that writing instruction in early education should include the teaching of basic writing skills and the teaching of writing processes in the same instructional protocol.”

FOCUS ON … EARLY LEARNING AND PRIMARY

Exciting welcome back 2022 has been an exciting welcome back to all at St Patrick’s School, Pakenham! After two years of lockdowns which impacted our Sacramental programs, this year we were able to join together with family and friends so our students could enter into the celebrations of Eucharist, Confirmation and Reconciliation (still to come in October). Children from other local schools who are catholic, enter into these celebrations as they too are a major part of our Parish.

The students participated in various activities related to these sacraments, which assisted them to grow in their faith in Jesus.

Eucharist is the sacrament that mirrors what happened at the Last Supper during Holy Week, where the bread, seen as a symbol of God’s body is broken and shared. Confirmation is when the students proclaim their own faith commitment and this was celebrated during a wonderful Reflection day encom-

passing Mass, co-operative activities and a pizza lunch. Finally, Reconciliation is when the students focus on the importance of forgiving others and also in asking for forgiveness.

We, the staff at St Patrick’s are proud of the whole-hearted way in which each student prepared themselves and the enormous support they were given by their families and the teachers. Each of these sacraments are a wonderful way to celebrate. We are also very lucky that we have the services of Father Janeesh Jose, Father Paul Zaher and Siji Dominic in the preparation and involvement in each of these important stages in the life of a catholic child.

dence suggests that nature-based learning is more enjoyable and hands-on than in a traditional classroom, so children may be more likely to retain more knowledge and stay focused throughout the lesson.

Learning about the environment while in nature is an obvious benefit, but the researchers also referenced studies showing the mental health benefits in adults who had spent significant time in nature in their childhood.

“Previous research has found links that suggest adults with a low exposure to nature in childhood had significantly poorer mental health and a greater risk of psychiatric disorders,” Miller says.

A 2017 study of 48 children in Germany found that children’s stress levels significantly improved after nature-based learning in the forest. Also, a 2018 US study reported that learning outcomes improved students’ focus and behaviour.

“While the evidence is growing, more research is needed because it is still unclear which elements of nature-based learning, such as type, duration, frequency, and location, provide the most benefits,” Miller says.

We all remember heading outside for story time in a blistering hot summer in the halcyon days of yesteryear.

But did the teachers back then know taking the classroom outdoors could improve learning, engagement in class and social skills?

A study by the University of South Australia found growing evidence that nature based learning may just do that.

In a paper published in Environmental Education Research, UniSA PhD candidate Nicole Miller and her colleagues found that taking the classroom outdoors may improve physical activity, learning, mental health and wellbeing, engagement in class and social skills.

They looked at 20 studies of nature across the globe over the past 18 years.

“The evidence suggests that taking the classroom outdoors could be a great way to include more incidental physical activities into a child’s day,” Ms Miller says.

The link between learning in nature and lower obesity rates is not new, but more significant than ever, given that only 19 per cent of Australian children are meeting the World Health Organization’s recommended levels of 60 minutes of moderate exercise a day.

“Globally, the figures are even worse, with a recent study of 12 countries showing that just 4.8 per cent of children aged between 5-19 years are doing moderate to vigorous exercise for an hour each day.”

WHO estimates that at least 340 million children and teenagers are overweight or obese, including 24 per cent of Australian children (ABS statistics), increasing their risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease later in life.

Helamini’s catwalk path to London

By Jonty Ralphsmith Dandenong North’s Helamini Weeratunga is among the entrants into Top Model Australia’s Dandenong Runway Show, held at Armada Dandenong Plaza on 22 and 23 October.

Ms Weeratunga started modelling at a Sri Lankan pageant in 2018 where she was first runner-up Miss Sri Lanka Australia.

The following year, she won the title for Miss South Asia Australia Sri Lanka and sees this event next month as another opportunity to progress her aspiration.

“I’m entering the competition to gain confidence, to get out of my comfort zone and to make new friends,” she said.

“While researching Top Model, I saw that the applications for Melbourne were opened and I quickly entered my details.

“This is mainly because I know that Top

Model is well recognised in finding model talents and launching careers for aspiring models.

Ms Weeratunga wants to continue in the industry for the foreseeable future.

“Modelling is something that makes me really confident and it’s something that takes me out of my comfort zone.

“So entering Top Model is a huge excitement for me because I do believe that it will make me more confident and will open up many modelling opportunities.

“I would like to keep presenting my values, my strengths and beliefs through modelling.”

Dandenong Plaza and Top Model Australia are particularly seeking locals to apply to take part in the event, which serves as the Victorian final in the national competition.

It includes a modelling course in the week prior, in which entrants gain skills in catwalk and runway technique, confidence and stage presence.

The Victorian winners go on to compete in the national final next year.

The Top Model Australia 2023 winner will compete for the Top Model worldwide title, flying to London for the competition and to walk in London Fashion Week.

Top Model is a premium international modelling competition that stages national events in nine countries to find fresh new faces in the modelling industry.

The competition is open to people of all genders aged 15-25 years. Entrants must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and applicants under the age of 18 must provide parental consent.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Award-winning heat pump

By Marcus Uhe Hallam-based business Solar Thermal Australia has been recognised at the 2022 Premier’s Sustainability Awards, winning the Industry Leader award in the Future Energy category for their innovative hot water system.

The ‘Reclaim Energy CO2 Heat Pump’ concentrates existing ambient heat from its surrounds and directs it to a water tank, rather than generating its own heat source through burning fossil fuels or using gas, consuming less than 0.01kWh for one litre of hot water production.

As a result, the product reduces annual hot water energy requirements by up to 80 per cent, when compared to traditional electric hot water systems, and saves the equivalent of 8000 tons of carbon dioxide per year.

Managing director at Solar Thermal Australia, Dr Christopher Taylor, said the honour came as a surprise to him when they were crowned at an awards ceremony at the Melbourne Convention Centre.

“The organisations we were up against were very impressive,” Dr Taylor said.

“I wasn’t anticipating we would win, you never go in to these (competitions) thinking you’ll win but it was a huge shock for me.

“You can do a lot of work and have the business grow, but to be recognised by your peers and industry specialists is a huge thrill.

“It validates all (the team’s) work we’ve done in the last four years in building and designing this product and it reinforces that we’re on the right track as far as the business and direction of energy management is concerned.”

The product’s origins are rooted in the need to adapt to changes in the market, having previously focused on traditional solar hot-water units.

What’s your reaction to the thought of networking? For some people, this is an exciting and energy-giving activity.

The prospect of meeting and getting to know new people, exchanging ideas or simply just discussing topics of mutual interest is enticing and these people will exploit every opportunity to get involved with it.

These are typically the same folk that would have done it tough during Covid-19 lockdowns, who would have been pacing the floors or feeling drained of energy because they could not do what really motivates them – meeting other people.

On the other hand, you may be the type of person that hates networking with a passion.

Often, these individuals are very self-conscious and the idea of having to make small talk and run the risk of saying or doing something that makes them feel wrong will fill them with a sense of dread, verging on terror.

These persons would have enjoyed their time alone or with family members during Covid-19 lockdowns and they would have recharged their energy levels.

I am basically distinguishing here between extroverts and introverts, and there is absolutely no issue with associating more closely with one than the other; both have their pros and cons.

However, when it comes to networking, this obviously comes more naturally to the extroverts who are hence likely to get more out of such an activity.

This is because when meeting someone for the first time, your brain is in overdrive making all sorts of initial assessments about the other to determine if you are going to get on with them.

So, whilst they are politely saying their name, your brain is busy making comparisons with other people, trying to come up with something sensible to say and not in listening mode.

The trick here is to repeat back their name

as soon as they say it, then repeat it back to yourself 10 seconds later and then again 30 seconds later. Then use their name again in the conversation soon after that.

Listening is a key skill at these events and barging into a conversation early on before you have had a chance to understand the nature of the discussion may not give the right first impression.

When you do get a chance to speak, briefly introduce yourself and your business and acknowledge the last speaker.

After that, the key thing to remember is: “It’s not about you”.

Find out as much as you as can about the other person/people, what they do, why they are here and what they are interested in and be genuinely interested. People love to talk about themselves so give them every opportunity!

Lions look to bounce back

Pakenham will be out to re-establish itself as a genuine powerhouse of the Casey Cardinia Cricket Association (CCCA) when the Lions kick off their season with a round-one trip to Merinda Park on Saturday.

The Lions played in four grand finals on the trot, from 2016 to 2019, splitting a quartet of battles against Kooweerup with two premierships to their name.

The same two teams qualified for grand final day 2020, before Covid called a halt to play.

The Lions then missed finals in 2021, before making a large charge to third position last year.

The Lions bowed out in the elimination final against Cardinia.

“We finished the season well, and building on that momentum is really important, but at the end of the day we’re like every other club, just taking it a week at a time and seeing where we’re at,” said senior captain Dale Tormey.

“Where it currently sits is we missed finals two years ago and got knocked out last year, so we’re just like other clubs at the moment who are trying to work hard to be successful.”

The Lions will take injury concerns into their round one battle against the Cobras, with star batter Chris Smith recovering from a workplace incident and opening bowler Patrick Lawson doubtful with a knee complaint.

It would appear to leave the Lions a little short on numbers.

But the enthusiasm of youth, a key signing, and improvement from existing players have Tormey confident the Lions can be competitive.

“A lot of the younger guys did an extended pre-season; they took that on themselves to do that, so they’re super-keen and raring to go,” he said.

“James Close did well last year and he’s come on in leaps and bounds…this is his first

proper pre-season since he took up cricket three or four years ago.

“Marcus Martini is another young one who didn’t probably play as many games as he would have liked last year, but he’s had a massive pre-season and is looking forward to the season as well.”

Nick Sadler is a significant pick up from Clyde.

“We know he’s a quality player, he’s played a fair bit of country week for the league in the past, and I think we’ll get the best out of him, used a bit differently to what he was at Clyde,” Tormey said.

“We also think he’s a very good batsman and will be a very capable all-rounder.

“I think he’ll be a big bonus for us.

“We’ve got a few injuries at the moment, which is not ideal, so we’re not sure what type of team we’ll be putting out to start with for round one.

“But whatever team we put out, I’m sure we’ll be competitive.

“We’ll probably have five players out of our finals team from last year, but it will be good for the club to blood these kids and see where they’re at.”

Tormey is also expecting improvement from a top-order bat.

“Jack Anning didn’t have the sort of year he wanted to last year, but he’s put in the time and had some extra sessions away from the club and he’s hitting the ball really well,” he said.

“I think we’ll see some big improvement from Jack this year, but that goes for everyone across the board.

“Apart from Boof (Jason Williams) and Smithy, we all could have done a lot more and we’re all raring to get into it.”

Tormey is also raring to go and keen to plant himself at the top of the CCCA rankings.

“Obviously my last two seasons haven’t been great, with injury and stuff last year, and I set myself very, very high standards,” he said.

“I’ve been bitterly disappointed with my last two seasons and have a bit to prove to myself and a few others this season.

“So I’m raring to get into it myself.”

Tormey is more focussed on his own group than this week’s opponent.

“I don’t really look too much into the new recruits at clubs and things like that, because if you start worrying about other teams you lose sight of what you need to work on yourself,” he said.

“We’ll worry about our own backyard and keep trying to improve ourselves.”

The Cobras and Lions are due for a round one shootout at 12noon at Donnelly Reserve on Saturday.

Devastating turn of foot sees Aesop a star on the rise

By David Nagel Pakenham trainer Phillip Stokes has a very promising stayer on his hands after Irish-import Aesop toyed with his opposition in the $130,000 BenchMark-78 Handicap (1800m) at Sandown on Sunday.

On a day that saw Alligator Blood steal the limelight with a brilliant win in the Group-1 Underwood Stakes, the electrifying turn-offoot of Aesop was also a talking point.

Gun-jockey Jamie Kah settled the six-yearold gelding midfield throughout the race, before pushing the button at the 400-metre mark and cruising into the contest.

Aesop responded with a devastating turn of foot, similar to that he showed when running second at Sandown on a slow track on September 7.

Stokes was confident heading into the race, but conceded the improved good-4 rating of the track could bring his gelding undone.

But Aesop relished the perfect surface, running away to win hard held by two lengths on the line.

“It was a lovely ride by Jamie, she got into a nice rhythm and he showed that nice turn of foot that he showed first up and the firm track wasn’t a problem,” Stokes said after the exciting win.

The stable has Aesop accepted for this Saturday’s The Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick, but may be forced to look elsewhere considering the short seven-day back up.

“That’s next Saturday so I’d say that will come up a bit quick, but I’ll speak with Terry (owner Terry Henderson) and the team to confirm.

“I’m thinking we keep him around the 2000, keep him fresh, and hopefully keep that turn of foot in him.”

Kah said the firmer ground had no effect on the gelding’s performance.

“He (Stokes) said if we do get beat today it’ll be because he didn’t handle the ground, but he loved it, he actually felt better in it than he did the other week when it was soft out there,” Kah said.

“This horse handles all conditions, he’s just a dream to ride, doesn’t spend a penny out there, he just relaxes, but the turn of foot today was enormous.

Pure joy for the Brookers

By Tyler Lewis Gembrook Cockatoo has stylishly forced its way into the Outer East Premier Division after securing the Division One title last Friday.

The Brookers lost to their grand final opponent, Seville, just a fortnight before the decider, but an unaware eye would’ve been blissfully unaware as Brad Coller’s men appeared a class above the Blues.

After six minutes of between the arc football, the Brookers kicked the first – and what seemed to be a settler – through key forward Myles Wareham.

And while it seemed to be a settler, Coller was only calmed by the final siren sounding across Woori Yallock Recreation Reserve.

“I don’t think I felt settled all game until that siren went at the end,” he said.

“I think we had a buffer most of the day and that was due to our hard work over the day.

“Every time Seville came at us, we popped a couple more on and we had an answer every time.”

While youth can often be the downfall on grand final day for many sides, Coller is confident that youth was what steered his side to premiership glory.

“Our coaching staff have all played in flags at Gembrook, which helps, but really we only had four blokes that have won a senior premiership,” he revealed.

“We had to draw a lot on the coaching staff and the elder statesmen in the team.

“A lot of the young fellas have won a flag in the under-18’s or whatever, but it’s not quite the same.

“I think we played on energy and enthusiasm and the youth, apart from Spud (Michael Firrito), Volts (Damien Volta) and Liam Henzen, everyone is basically 22 and under.

“When you’ve got that youth, energy and enthusiasm, you get a lot of drive, they just don’t give up those kids, they just keep running.”

The lead up to the decider was intriguing.

Seville appealed the suspension to forward Rob Petracca and it made an extensive amount of noise.

Coller urged his group to find the balance between blocking it out and using it as motivation.

“Yeah there was a bit of carry on,” he said.

“They said they were going to use it as motivation, but we kept a bit of a lid on it and tried to block out that social media crap, because we thought they were using it as a tool to motivate them.

“We just wanted to play our style of footy, we know it worked through the year and we had to step up another gear on our intensity and attack on the ball.”

That Brookers outfit came from fourth on the ladder to hand Berwick Springs just its third loss of the season and Coller admitted seeing his club celebrate early on inspired his senior unit.

“I had massive faith in our twos, I thought they were more of a chance than we were,” he said.

“I think us watching that with the break between the two games, for us to watch the last couple of minutes and for them to win, that just gave us such a good feeling before we went out.

“It would’ve been a totally different story if they had have lost, because we would’ve then felt a lot more pressure, but with them getting the job done everyone took a breath and thought right they’ve set the way now.”

“I can’t speak highly enough of that man,” he said.

“He’s a champion footballer, but he’s an even better person – what he has done for our community, football club and individuals around the club… he’s got time for everyone.

“From the best player to the 66th player on our list, the supporters, their kids, he would’ve taken 100 photos on the weekend with people wanting one with him and the cup.

“He deserves everything he gets from the weekend and he’s had a great year.

“I spoke to him and Liam Henzen and said ‘I would love for you guys to keep going, but right now this is a perfect time for you to go thank you very much’.

“Neither of them are making the decision, I think Spud could sit in the forward pocket of Premier Division and still kick 30-40 goals.

“We’ll see… there’s no answer yet, but he’s got every right to soak it up and celebrate the next week or so before he starts thinking about it.”

Gallivanting Gibbs throws third 180 for the season

By David Nagel There are only four rounds remaining in the South West Gippsland Dart League (SWGDL) with the competition really heating up with some close results in round 14.

Over the last fortnight there have been many individual and team highlights, with Dean Gibbs from Snipers showing his class with a bombardment of the triple-20.

Gibbs has thrown a combined 19 tons over the last two weeks, and also rubber-stamped his authority with a third 180 for the season against a gallant Wizards last week.

Snipers, second, looked a class above the fifth-placed Wizards on paper, but survived a brave battle to secure a hard-fought 8-7 victory.

Gibbs leads the competition with a very impressive 98 tons for the season, 32 clear of his Snipers teammate Aaron.

Despite their individual dominance, Snipers still find themselves two games behind ladder-leaders Just Social, who continued their undefeated run with a 10-5 victory over Mud Rats.

with a 9-6 win over Fore, while Rebels made it back-to-back victories with a 10-5 triumph over Gembrook.
