the group is “proud” of what it has achieved since.

“It’s very hard to get a permit for a drive through type restaurant anywhere in the Dandenong Ranges now, because it’s got to fit in with the local overlay, and the people that lobbied for that were from our campaign, so that was a big plus,” Garry said.

“The Liberal-National Coalition (LNP) brought in the move on laws, which were designed to basically give police power to move on peaceful protesters.

“We lobbied the incoming Labor government and the move on laws were dropped so people can peacefully protest and this not only effects community protests, but effects unions.”

In a statement to the Star Mail, McDonald’s Australia said in its time in Tecoma for nearly 10 years, it has played a role in “providing jobs and opportunities for hundreds of residents, and investing back into the community through a number of key partnerships”.

“McDonald’s Tecoma is a proud partner of the Upwey-Tecoma Senior and Junior Football and Netball Clubs, the Upwey-Tecoma Cricket Club and the Belgrave Football Netball Club,” the statement read.

“Our crew conduct daily litter patrols around the restaurant and we encourage our customers to dispose of their rubbish responsibly.

“McDonald’s is a founding partner of Clean Up Australia Day, and has been helping to tackle litter in communities for more than 30 years.”

Protestors are still fighting against McDonald’s setting up shop in Tecoma, despite the fast food giant opening up in the town more than eight years ago.

Honks and yells from drivers passing by rang loud outside the McDonald’s store on Burwood Highway on Thursday 1 September in response to four protestors waving a banner and placards with messages including ‘we voted NO to McDonald’s in Tecoma’ and ‘this is our home, we are not leaving’.

“It’s just to remind them of what they did all those years ago. They were not welcome, and they are still not welcome,” Upwey resident and protester Peter Saunders said.

In 2011, Yarra Ranges Council councillors voted unanimously to refuse a planning permit submitted by McDonald’s, for this decision to then be overturned by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) on the grounds the plans did not contravene the state or local planning scheme.

Some 1,300 objections to the development were lodged with Yarra Ranges Council at the time.

In its decision, VCAT noted the fifteen grounds of refusal submitted in Yarra Ranges Council’s notice of refusal, including ‘failure to achieve landscaping objectives, the design response, traffic and parking concerns and adverse amenity impacts on neighbours.’

Tecoma resident Karl Williams was part of the group known as the ‘Tecoma Eight’ named in court documents filed by McDonald’s for an injunction against them for creating a community garden on the building site in protest.

While proceedings were eventually dropped, Karl has not given up the fight; reg-

Tributes pour in for Queen

By Mikayla van Loon For 70 years Queen Elizabeth II reigned with strength and grace and in the mourning of her death, Yarra Ranges residents have honoured her service in a flood of messages and tributes.

Queen Elizabeth II died peacefully at her Balmoral Castle in Scotland on Thursday 8 September, aged 96, after an announcement doctors were concerned for her health.

The news has sent ripples of emotion throughout communities, with a poignant statement from Premier Daniel Andrews saying “very few of us know a world without The Queen in it.”

“Her presence spanned countries, cultures, language, and continents – her reign transcended decades and generations,” he said.

“And like no monarch before her, she captured our hearts and our affection. We treasured her and the entire world respected her.”

The longest reigning monarch left an impression on both people of the Commonwealth and the world, but it was the glimpses in local communities that inspired people.

Travelling to the Yarra Valley with the late Prince Phillip in 1954, the pair passed through Lilydale and Mount Evelyn before making the final stop in Warburton.

Remembering and honouring Queen Elizabeth’s legacy, Mount Evelyn RSL’s piper Iain Townsley played a series of laments, while Chris Thiele laid a bouquet of flowers at the base of the Australian flag, which stands at half mast, on Friday 9 September.

“The President and members of Mt Evelyn RSL are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. “A truly remarkable lady who gave her all for her country and the Commonwealth over her 70 year reign. From her service in World War Two, to swearing in the new British Prime Minister just days ago, our sovereign’s commitment to duty never wavered.”

With people hearing the call of the bagpipes, commuters and passersby stopped to listen in what they said was a lovely tribute and celebration of a life well lived.

CFA brigades, RSL clubs and Yarra Ranges Council alike have taken to lowering the Australian flag to half mast across the shire as a sign of respect and protocol.

“Her seven decades on the throne was a model to the world on how to serve one’s people with grace, dignity and dedication.

Our deepest condolences to the Royal Family,” Montrose Fire Brigade posted on social media.

Evelyn MP Bridget Vallence also took to social media to pay her condolences to the Royal Family and the broader community.

“Her Majesty the Queen served with grace and distinction for 70 years, during times that really tested our world including wars, natural disasters and a pandemic,” she said.

“Also the only woman in the royal family to have served in the armed forces in World War II. An inspiration.”

Queen Elizabeth was said to have been surrounded by King Charles III and the Queen Consort in the moments before her death.

The King said in a statement, released by Buckingham Palace, it was “a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family.”

“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Moth-

er. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.

“During this period of mourning and change, my family and I will be comforted and sustained by our knowledge of the respect and deep affection in which The Queen was so widely held.”

Flags across the country will remain at half mast until the day after the Sovereign’s funeral which will be in 10 days time.

Emerald resident Maria Millers said there was a complete lack of transport options for both young people and the elderly throughout the township, which she would like to discuss with the candidates.

“It’s a quality of life issue, elderly people with appointments are basically marooned,” she said.

“The young cohort have basically been left to their own devices to get to parties and or venues because there are no taxis.”

The Victorian state election will be held on Saturday 26 November.

Fire caused by fairy lights rips through family home

By Parker McKenzie Four people were lucky to escape injury after a fire caused by fairy lights ripped through a unit in Ferntree Gully early this morning, destroying around 60 per cent of the property.

Six CFA vehicles responded to the fire on Conn Street at around 9.45am on Tuesday 6 September, where they found a two-storey townhouse alight upon arrival.

Reforms changing the way sexual violence is dealt with in Victoria passed Parliament on Tuesday 30 August.

The Justice Legislation Amendment (Sexual Offences and Other Matters) Bill 2022 includes amendments that will adopt an affirmative consent model and provide better protections for victim-survivors of sexual offences, shifting the scrutiny from victim-survivors onto their perpetrators.

The model will make it clear everyone has a responsibility to get consent before engaging in sexual activity, will clarify that circumstances where there is no consent to an act and include stronger laws to target image-based sexual abuse.

The legislation also includes new jury directions to address misconceptions in sexual offence trials and reforms to better protect the confidential health information of sexual offence complainants.

These reforms will be supported by community-based education delivered by local organisations and specialist services, announced in the Victorian Budget 2022/23.

They will start to come into effect from September, with the affirmative consent model to be in place from July 2023 unless proclaimed earlier.

Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb raises big As of 12:30pm on Monday 12 August, the Melbourne Firefighter Star Climb has raised $522,738 for mental health.

600 firefighters and emergency service personnel climbed the 28 floors of the Crown Metropol Hotel in the CBD wearing 25kgs of turnout gear and breathing apparatus to raise awareness of mental health issues like depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress injury and suicide. This year the Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb aims to raise $600,000 for the 000 Foundation, to improve support services, fund research and remove stigma of mental health issues. Over the last two years, firefighters and emergency personnel have raised more than $450,000 and climbed almost 10 million steps for Lifeline, Fortem Australia and the 000 Foundation.

The Gembrook CFA Fire Brigade received a $1,150 cheque from Gembrook IGA on Friday 9 September.

“It is only with the great support we at IGA receive from the community that enables me to give back to worthy causes such as the CFA,” Gembrook IGA owner Andrew Spark said in a social media post.

With the Monbulk electorate’s changing borders ahead of the 2022 state election, the Star Mail spoke to the people in areas previously outside the electorate about the issues they believe should be addressed by their new state representative.

The Monbulk electorate was enlarged to also include Gembrook, Cockatoo, Emerald and parts of Ferntree Gully due to it being smaller than the average-sized electorate in the state.

Connecting Cockatoo Communities Chairperson Tate McFarlane said during a recent event where residents met and asked questions to the Liberal Party’s Gareth Ward and Labor’s Daniela De Martino, the local community raised several issues to the Monbulk candidates.

“We talked about power and telecommunication resilience in times of crisis, we had that storm event last year and we were in a situation where being able to access and communicate with the outside world became limited,” he said.

“The power system itself was out for three or four days, which for a community that is considered a metropolitan area is pretty substantive.”

Other issues raised during the event included the physical and mental health services in the hills, roads and potholes, and support for young people in the area.

Emerald resident Maria Millers said there have been long-term transport issues in the state.

Mums of the Hills, a community group dedicated to supporting mothers throughout the Dandenong Ranges, organised a survey about the needs of their members.

Now is the time to plan

By Renee Wood Now spring is upon us, Yarra Ranges residents are being reminded to get prepared and create their emergency plans.

Australian Red Cross Divisional Operations Officer Sue Jack said lots of areas in the Yarra Ranges are known as high bushfire risks and prone to other disasters.

“All those areas are heavily treed, heavily populated – they’re all bushfire risks.. We’ve now got storms added to the list as well and a lot of flooding areas, so there’s multiple hazards in the Yarra Ranges,” Ms Jack said.

“Even people in suburbs, they don’t think they’re going to be impacted so much and yet you can be - if you’re surrounded by parkland or grasslands, you can be impacted by grass fires and things like that.”

The Australian Red Cross has free resources available such as the ‘Get Prepared’ app which assists in creating a plan and discusses various hazards from natural disasters to medical emergencies.

“The benefits of the Get Prepared app is really good for people that are actually using technology for a start…so they can just do it easily through their phone,” she said.

“It looks at preparing for all hazards, so you can take it in the context that you wish or depending on where you are, whether it’s storm, flood or you’re looking at a possible medical emergency.”

The Rediplan is another helpful tool which can be downloaded and printed off.

“It walks you through you as a person, what you can, what you can’t do, what you need to do, what you need to think about, and it’s looking at all hazards, so it’s very good and it just makes you think and even makes you think about the mental preparedness.

New research has revealed the importance of community preparedness after looking at the Australian Red Cross emergency preparedness programs among people who lived through the 2021 Wooroloo Bushfire in the Perth Hills.

Key findings included most people felt very prepared for an emergency and had increased

confidence, evacuated earlier and their plan resulted in reduced half to themselves and family.

The most common activities were planning the best exit, preparing with family, learning about local hazards and arranging insurance.

“Once you’re actually faced with a disaster like a bushfire or flooding event, most of us initially panic and don’t think straight, that’s just normal,” Ms Jack said.

So I think actually preparing for an emergency helps you deal with it when it actually happens.

“It’s good to have that in your mind before something happens, because when something happens, you might not have much time to do much at all.”

Knox to review childcare

By Parker McKenzie Knox City Council will undertake a review of its kindergarten services by engaging a community panel to consider its options going forward, after the state government expanded universal kindergarten to include four-yearolds and three-year-olds.

In a council meeting on Monday 29 August, councillors voted to implement a community engagement plan for broad community consultation followed by the establishment of the panel.

Cr Marcia Timmers-Leitch, who moved the motion, said Knox City Council has a proud history of delivering kindergarten services.

“Currently, the council operates three and four-year-old programs out of 29 community owned facilities,” she said.

“It employs 145 dedicated staff to deliver these services, of which 79 per cent are currently rated as exceeding the national quality standards.”

She said the review, in light of the changes made by the state government in regards to free kindergarten, is “a normal part of responsible governance for any service local government offer.”

Knox City Council operates 29 sessional kindergarten services in single-room, standalone facilities at a cost of $3.3 million to the council budget each year.

pointed to recruit and facilitate the community panel, with feedback on the service review commencing in October. Kindergarten services will operate as usual while the review is undertaken.

Mayor Susan Laukens said while the council welcomes the reforms, rising costs of providing the service are diverting resources.

“Council makes a significant financial investment into kindergarten services and facilities to support children and families but fully funding the additional resources required to implement the reforms is beyond our financial capacity,” she said.

“The panel will be informed by feedback provided from kindergarten families and the broader community. We need to ensure feedback is representative of our whole community and the panel will ensure the diverse views and perspectives of our community are heard.”

The review will discuss the council’s role as early year’s manager and how changes might be managed to make kindergarten services more financially viable. The engagement plan states “the services cannot continue to be delivered within current resourcing,” while committing to the expansion of minimum group sizes, no new kindergarten fees and no increase to rates to offset the costs.

Shocking report into 000 call services

By Parker McKenzie A review of the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority — the body handling triple zero calls —was released by the state government on Saturday 3 September, revealing an organisation struggling to handle the high influx of calls when demand for emergency services surges.

The report by the Inspector-General for Emergency Management Tony Pearce and former Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Aston was commissioned to assess the current state of ESTA’s services to Ambulance Victoria, CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria, Police and SES. It aimed to identify critical capability challenges for the organization, consider the effectiveness of the current communications infrastructure, examine the legislation and policy environment surrounding ESTA, examine the current and future drivers of service delivery demand and impact on the community and provide recommendations to the government on any required changes to the authority.

The report states ESTA responds to 2.5 million emergency calls annually and employs approximately 1000 people, however, in January 2022 only 39 per cent of calls were answered in the five-second target.

“A single workforce cannot sustain this continual barrage of stress, criticism, and heartbreak, and it should not be left to ESTA to resolve these issues alone. ESTA is part of mailcommunity.com.au

“Organisation in the sector has played a role in where ESTA is today. Each of these organisations must now invest and commit to supporting ESTA in the delivery of the reform to come.”

Emergency service operators like SES, CFA, police and Ambulance Victoria rely on ESTA to answer every emergency call for assistance before they work together to dispatch a front-line worker to the incident.

Alongside recommending the disbanding and replacement of the board, Mr Ashton made 19 other recommendations. These included rebranding the organisation to Triple Zero Victoria, working collaboratively with Ambulance Victoria and exploring alternative call management practices, commissioning an independent review of ESTA training standards, further funding from the state government, introducing live monitoring of call data to alert emergency services to potential large scale emergencies, developing and implementing outcome-based performance standard and introduce the monitoring and investigation of ESTA’s performance.

The state government accepted the findings of the review and supported the recommendations.

Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes said in a statement she offered her sympathies to those who lost loved during the pandemic.

“Our dedicated call-takers, dispatchers

and other staff at ESTA have worked tirelessly to support Victorians in the face of sustained, unprecedented pandemic-related call volumes, we cannot thank them enough,” she said.

“Building on significant investments and major structural reforms already underway, we are using the lessons from these reviews to prepare our system to be strong and resilient into the future.”

The state government pointed to record ambulance call-outs peaking at 4000 a day during the omicron surge, with paramedics responding to 93,000 code one callouts in the first three months of 2022.

The average wait time for an ambulance in the Yarra Ranges from 1 April to 30 June was 17 minutes and 23 seconds. For non-life threatening but acute and time-sensitive code two patients, the wait time ballooned to 40 minutes and 52 seconds.

Shadow Minister for Emergency Services and Gembrook MP Brad Battin said staffing cuts and mismanagement of triple-zero services contributed to ESTA’s failure to meet targets.

“Daniel Andrews has run Victoria’s health system as Premier or Minster for 12 of the past 16 years, the person who broke the system is not the one to fix it.”

Homeowners throughout the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges will see the cost of their mortgage rise again, with the RBA announcing another rise in the cash rate target for the fifth month in a row.

Amid rising cost of living and inflation, the RBA announced the .50 basis point raise to 2.35 per cent on Tuesday 6 September. The cash rate represents the interest rate on unsecured overnight loans between banks. and serves as the benchmark rate for mortgages, savings accounts and exchange rates.

RBA Governor Philip Lowe said in a statement the board is committed to returning inflation to the 2 to 3 per cent range over time while keeping the economy on an “even keel.”

“The path to achieving this balance is a narrow one and clouded in uncertainty, not least because of global developments,” he said.

“The outlook for global economic growth has deteriorated due to pressures on real incomes from high inflation, the tightening of monetary policy in most countries, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the COVID containment measures and other policy challenges in China.”

According to Finder’s RBA cash Rate Survey, the average monthly mortgage payment is up 29 per cent in the last five months.

Head of consumer research at Finder Graham Cooke said after the rise comes into effect it will cost the average Aussie homeowner an additional $801 per month compared to what they were paying in April 2022.

“This fifth rate rise since May piles on the pressure for Aussie homeowners, who will have almost $10,000 less to spend on groceries, clothing and holidays compared to only six months ago,” he said.

“Fixed loan holders are in for a big shock once that rate expires and their payments spike. Our figures show the average fixedrate homeowner will be paying $600 extra per month come December.”

Taking better care

By Mikayla van Loon Health and aged care were two of the industries hardest hit during the pandemic but it was an area already feeling the effects of worker shortages which was only having an impact on patients, residents and staff.

With the Jobs and Skills Summit last week and Dementia Action Week happening from September 19 to 25 September, Mooroolbark based Dementia Care International (DCI) backs calls from Dementia Australia to respond to the recommendations of the Aged Care Royal Commission to invest in dementiaspecific training.

“We can’t separate staff wellbeing from residents’ wellbeing. Increasing wages without addressing staff wellbeing will only be a shortterm solution as burnout will still occur,” DCI president Hilary Lee said.

This was echoed by Dementia Australia CEO Maree McCabe AM who said “embedding a minimum level of compulsory dementia care education is as important as increasing staffing numbers and wages.”

Having travelled to Paris in 2009 with DCI founder Jane Verity to meet with OECD Head of Health Division Mark Pearson, Ms Lee said one of the OECD’s future predictions was “recruitment and retention of staff will become the biggest issue facing aged care in the future.”

This was put down to a lack of job satisfaction and lack of education, something, since that time DCI has worked to improve.

“With this information as a guide, at Dementia Care International we decided to develop a Model of Care that focuses both on the needs of the staff as well as the residents and clients,” Ms Lee said.

Ms Lee said DCI’s education perspective focuses on a heightened “level of emotional intelligence in teams”. “[It’s] providing each person with the autonomy to problem solve human needs from a deeper level. This means staff can feel fulfilled in their role and experience elevated job

“The education provided by our organisation facilitates increased self-confidence and self-esteem and reconnects people with their purpose.

Having a purposeful role at work positively and profoundly affects all aspects of life.”

Ms McCabe said 65 per cent of people in residential care have a moderate to severe cognitive impairment, while 70 per cent of the half a million people in Australia who have dementia receive in-home care.

“All staff employed and entrusted to provide care must be appropriately trained in dementia care,” she said.

“The sooner the whole aged care workforce is accessing appropriate dementia care education and training the sooner we will begin to see the changes needed to improve the health, lifestyle and care outcomes for people of all ages living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers.”

Not only is education important for staff and carers but for the community as well, with Dementia Action Week’s theme for this year

being ‘a little support makes a big difference’.

This theme is trying to dispel some of the stigmas and discrimination that occurs for someone who has dementia.

“We know discrimination has a significant impact on people living with dementia, their families and carers, and a little support from the community and healthcare professionals can make a big difference,” Ms McCabe said.

“We are encouraging communities to come together to learn more about how they can support people living with dementia.

“Whether in a workplace, at a bowls or footy club, or just with friends and family, we want everyone to get together to learn more about dementia and how a little support can make a big difference.”

Volunteer shortage for Belgrave charity

By Tyler Wright A Belgrave-based charity is looking for more helpers on Saturdays amid a volunteer shortage.

Dandenong Ranges Relief Service (DRERS) volunteer John Landon said the pandemic among other factors has made people “nervous” to volunteer.

“We’re down volunteers compared to previous years,” John said.

To combat this, DRERS is planning to hold a regular sausage sizzle on Saturdays at the Upper Ferntree Gully Market, with the goal of attracting new volunteers while also raising funds for the non-profit, which provides food, food vouchers, crisis counselling and referrals to those in need south west of the ranges.

“Because we’re open Monday to Fridays, not everyone’s about to volunteer during [those hours],” John said.

“Maybe this sausage sizzle, on the weekend, on a Saturday, would be another opportunity for someone to help out who’s been wanting to help out but hasn’t been able to do it midweek.

“The money raised from sausage sizzle will go back to running our service.”

30 volunteers currently run the organisation’s emergency relief service, drop in centre, op shop and committee, and help roughly 1000 people with their services yearly, While DRERS receives funding to provide vouchers and emergency relief to dedicated areas from Upper Ferntree Gully, to Cockatoo, Yellingbo and Mount Dandenong, anyone can use the Mi Place Drop in centre.

“When clients come in for help, some of the volunteers have a consultation with them, they sit down and discuss what what the situation is with the person struggling and then how we can provide help,” John said.

“Other people sort of focus more on the food pickups... picking up food from supermarkets or places like Food Bank, Victoria, and then you’ve got other people who are running the drop in centre. They’re volunteers who like 6 MAIL

“Sometimes you don’t realise until you volunteer at these sorts of organisations how much need there is in your own community,” John said.

“Anybody can find themselves in a crisis at any point, all of a sudden [having] illness, domestic violence, that sort of thing in your life can change just like that.”

By Parker McKenzie Foothills Community Care has put out the call for more donations as the rising cost of living causes demand for their support, often from people who previously haven’t needed to access their services.

Foothills Community Care founder Stephen Barrington said the amount of people who have needed assistance since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic has quadrupled at times over the past two years.

“Earlier in the year, we were dealing with a lot of people who are home with Covid or people who were ill, but we’ve seen that over the last six months people who haven’t had to ask for help before,” he said.

“People who are quite vulnerable anyway, they might have a range of issues whether it’s mental health or illnesses, with the last few years and the cost of living just tipping them further over the edge.”

Foothills Community Care was established in 2002 to provide a space where people can connect and engage with each other, as they address challenges like family and domestic violence, homelessness, addiction, poverty, mental health issues and social isolation.

It offers weekly meals around the hills, while also offering other support.

Mr Barrington said the best items to donate are non-perishables items.

“We thought we’d put the call out again for non-perishable things like rice, pasta, tomato sauce, tinned tomatoes, chickpeas, Tuna, long-life milk, coffee, tea, Vegemite, peanut butter and also toothpaste and shampoos,” he said.

“Things that are staples and we can easily put together in a pack and distribute to people.”

Currently, people can attend a Wednesday night community meal in Ferntree Gully, where people can join for a hot drink, have a chat and receive food parcels from 4pm, or get a takeaway or dine-in meal from 5pm until 6pm.

Mr Barrington said Foothills is currently distributing 700 to 800 meals a week.

“In the past, we would have a lot of meat donations, but we’re finding that really hard these days and we have to spend a lot more money on purchasing meat,” he said.

“If anyone has any connections or contacts with a butcher, we’d love donations for that, or any butchers wanting to support us with meat donations.”

Donations of non-perishable items can be dropped off at the Community Bank Knox Group Ferntree Gully branch at 67 Station Street or a monetary donation can be made at foothillscare.org.au/ donate.

Mr Barrington said people often think the support Foothills offers is to people suffering from homelessness, but their support is for everyone.

“An extra food parcel can make the difference between being able to pay the bills, pay the rent, pay the utilities and stay in their home, as opposed to going into financial crisis.”

VCAL changes welcomed

By Parker McKenzie and Tyler Wright Dandenong Ranges schools have welcomed the introduction of VCAL reforms in 2023, ahead of the Victorian State Government hosting an online question and answer session on Tuesday September 13 for students and parents to hear from experts, highlight changes to the education curriculum and address any concerns.

Minister for Education Natalie Hutchins said students and parents want to hear from experts about why VCE is changing, “That’s exactly what we’re doing by holding these sessions,” she said.

“This is a great opportunity for students and parents to ask any questions they might have, as well as get some answers from our experts and help prepare for the changes next year.”

From the 2023 school year, a new VCE vocational major will replace the intermediate and senior Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL).

Fairhills High School Principal Ian Van Schie said he believes the changes will be good for students.

“Bringing everything back into VCE and creating a vocational major really supports students to create more flexibility,” he said.

“It reduces some of the stigmas that unfortunately VCAL had. I know at Fairhills High School, we’re focused on making sure we have an effective vocational major in 2023.”

The Ask Me Anything session will be delivered by the Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority at 7.30pm through the department’s YouTube channel.

Mater Christi College Deputy Principal of Learning Julie Stewart said the school has seen an increase in students embracing a vocational pathway.

“We’ve had an increase in the number of students taking this pathway than what we have had traditionally over the years because

“It enables them to be able to still do some of the subjects, like the arts for example, or anything else that they enjoy without having to follow that academic-university ATAR pathway.”

The reforms were introduced after the Firth Review was commissioned in 2019, aiming to ensure all Victorian Secondary School students have “access to high-quality vocational and applied learning options,” and to “look for ways to improve transitions for students between school, post-secondary education and work.”

The final report was published in November 2020, finding more needed to be done to make vocation and applied learning in schools “high quality, highly regarded, relevant to the

needs of students and employers, and available to all.”

It recommended embedding vocational education in VCE, moving to an integrated senior secondary certificate to replace the current VCAL certificate and supporting students to “develop both academic and practical skills,” according to the state government.

The State Government accepted all 36 recommendations made by the Firth Review.

Mr Van Schie said the changes have been well communicated by the State Government.

“Although it’s moved back into VCE, there is that hands-on applied component. For so many students, we see that sometimes the traditional classroom setting just does not suit them,” he said.

people, their confidence just really soars. I’m excited that’s retained, but also that it is under the VCE umbrella.”

Ms Stewart said the changes were communicated after the school’s subject selection had already started and she hadn’t heard about the Ask Me Anything Session until contacted by the Star Mail.

“My only criticism is that it probably was a little late. It was enough time, but it wasn’t timely enough,” she said.

“From a school perspective, we started our subject selection process in week two of term three, in late July. Most secondary schools do that because you have to do staffing and timetables, it’s literally a six-month process.”

Kerbside bin changes to be deliberated More than $480,000 in shire grants

Yarra Ranges Council is proposing changes for kerbside rubbish pick ups in line with the new state government waste policy.

From October next year, more than 60,000 properties will have a green food organics and garden organic (FOGO) bins introduced for weekly pick up, while waste bins will be cut down to fortnightly.

Recycling will stay on a fortnightly pick up and the new purple lid glass bin is expected to be brought in by 2025 for a monthly pick up.

The Draft Waste Plan will be deliberated at the Tuesday 13 September council meeting.

“This is probably one of the most important items that we’ve had to deal with at Council,” Mayor Jim Child said.

Other councils, such as Knox City Council, have been met with resident outrage as they’ve made the decision to change the services without community consultation.

However, Yarra Ranges Council is hopeful residents concerns’ will be appeased once there is an understanding that a weekly pick up of the FOGO bin will dispose of ‘smelly’ food scraps - removing the necessity for a weekly pick up of the waste bin.

The new green organic system will allow for organic waste such as food scraps, seafood, meat bones and coffee grounds that will then go to be processed at a composting facility.

Small kitchen caddies and compostable bags will also be delivered for the easy disposal of scraps that can then be placed in the FOGO bin.

Nappies, home sanitary and medical waste items will still need to go into the waste bin, collected fortnightly.

Council said it’s working with other councils to establish the best option for those items including education programs, reusable nappies support and nappy recycling systems.

A further 10 per cent of waste bin’s content could also be recycled such as plastics and paper.

Yarra Ranges Waste Management Executive Officer Graham Brew said the move to pick up the waste bin fortnightly is justified if 50 per cent of current waste will be going to

other allocated bins and diverted away from landfill.

“It’s unnecessary if the bins aren’t going to be full and the material that’s there is odourless, so it’s not going to smell because hopefully the majority is doing the right thing, it’s all going to be in their weekly bin,” Mr Brew said.

The changes to rates aren’t yet known as council is waiting for the tender process to be finalised to understand the costs involved.

It’s expected the increase in the service level and it’s affect on rates will be submitted in the budget next year.

Residents won’t be able to opt in or out of services as the overhaul will see a change in the shire wide standard of service.

Extensive engagement and community consultation of the draft plan will be undertaken with pop ups at markets, shopping centres and engagement activities for the community to be part of.

Residents can tune into the council meeting 7pm Tuesday 13 September.

Cardinia Shire Council has announced $483,342.41 in funding under its Community Capital Works Grants 2022–23 program to 27 successful applicants across category 1 and 2 grants.

Gembrook Craft Group Inc, Emerald Museum and Bestchance kindergarten in Avonsleigh and the Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre in Cockatoo were named as successful recipients in the 2022-2023 program.

While Gembrook Craft Group Inc. will receive a cottage environmental upgrade through the funding, Emerald Museum will receive new flooring and Bestchance kindergarten will have carpet replaced as well as internal painting completed.

The Ash Wednesday Bushfire Education Centre will receive generator input sockets.

Each year, the Cardinia Shire Community Capital Works Grants program enables local community groups to upgrade community and recreation facilities to meet the varied needs of the community.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield congratulated this year’s recipients.

“Well done to everyone who applied for a grant and congratulations to the successful applicants in this year’s Community Capital Works Grants program,” Cr Springfield said.

Kids enjoy final showcase

By Tyler Wright Mount Dandenong Primary School performed in the final Showcase in national dance storytelling event Wakakirri on Monday 5 September, after performing in heats at the Frankston Arts Centre on Thursday 25 August.

Mount Dandenong Primary School students were the third to perform out of six schools at The Clocktower Centre in Moonee Ponds, presenting ‘Everybody’s Free;’ a story of isolated children who venture out of their homes and attempt to free caged animals at the zoo.

Mount Dandenong Primary School entered into the showcase after receiving the award for ‘best re-use of costumes’ and being commended for excellent performance in teamwork, excellent set movement and staging, excellent soundtrack mix, excellent theme concept and amazing lighting at the heats.

The school was also nominated for the national award under the category of an animal welfare story.

“It was a massive day...[the students] loved every moment of watching all the other schools and really enjoyed the atmosphere,” Mount Dandenong Primary School Wakakirri teacher Jody Howell told the Star Mail after the heats.

“Then getting on stage themselves just blew their little minds. I think they were really excited,” Jody said.

“I like the sound of [the awards] because it’s not just in one particular area.

To have something like set movement in staging, teamwork is a big one, theme concepts; we’ve really covered a lot of bases...I’m really proud of them.”

The results from the final showcase are set to be announced in coming week, as schools in other states finish presenting their performances.

The last time Mount Dandenong Primary School made the Wakakirri Showcase was in 2017, with their performance ‘Saving the Bees’.

Upwey Men’s Shed seeks Graeme puts pen to paper support for storage area

By Parker McKenzie The Upwey Men’s Shed is seeking support from the community in finding an area for storage, as the search for a permanent location for a shed continues.

President of the Upwey Men’s Shed Gerran Wight said without a permanent shed, members have been storing tools and materials in their own homes.

“We are very grateful for the generosity of community members who want to help with donations,” he said.

“It’s very sad but unfortunately we are now having to say no thanks to regular offers from locals who want to donate tools and equipment to the men’s shed in Upwey.”

The community organisation has been searching for a permanent home for the past four years but has yet to obtain permission to build a shed on public land.

Mr Wright said with the search for a suitable location for the community shed still ongoing, the group is looking to the community for help in alternative storage arrangements.

“If there is someone out there preferably in or around Upwey with secure industrial, commercial or residential storage we would love to hear from you as soon as possible,” he said.

“Upwey Men’s Shed have even thought of buying a container, which we could easily fill, but need to find somewhere secure to locate it until we can build our own shed.”

Members from the Men’s Shed recently undertook several community projects, including building new benches for the Upwey Community Group and fixing local residents’ bikes.

Picture: SUPPLIED Mr Wright said the Men’s Shed has successfully fundraised enough money to build the shed and spent countless hours developing proposals and plans, but they cannot get an agreement to use public man to build the shed.

“We are hopeful that some land may be found soon so we will have somewhere that members can meet together to use these tools and equipment for community benefit,” he said.

“Looking for a site has been very frustrating and whilst we are maintaining good membership numbers we are concerned that unless we can find somewhere soon it might all fall apart and Upwey will lose a valuable community service.”

Upwey Men’s Shed — a registered charity with the Australian Tax Office — has raised over $230,000 in grants, donations and fundraising for their permanent home, but without the land to build it on they cannot proceed any further.

Emerald resident Graeme Legge is sharing his Scouting adventures with the world as he launches his book, The Fleur-de-Lis, Khaki Shorts and Me. Graeme joined the Scouts at age 12, not knowing it would lead to a commitment beyond 40 years.

He said the inspirational memoir details adventures within Victoria, interstate and international sites.

“It’s a mixture of Emerald history and anecdotes of my experience as a youth member then as an adult leader that shows when I became a Scout, I took the Scout promise seriously throughout all stages of life,” Mr Legge said.

“It’s a coming together of various experiences and interests in life.”

The initial inspiration for the book came to Mr Legge back in 1957, when he was the sole teacher for a school between Geelong and Bacchus Marsh and discovered a local history book on townships in the area.

“I thought it was so fascinating and I was wondering why someone hadn’t done that for Emerald,” he said.

From then on, Mr Legge started collecting memorabilia of local happenings in Emerald, covering all sorts of avenues - including churches, schools and sporting history.

He realised he could compile his work to tell a story of “considerable interest”.

“I’m excited to release the book. I think local history is important and part of our heritage, and to that end, is worthwhile to read about,” Mr Legge said.

He said he hoped the book would inspire others to join the Scouts.

A book launch is set to be held on Saturday 17 September at the Emerald Scout Hall, 21 Kilvington Drive, where Mr Legge will introduce himself and his book.

Speeches will be presented from representatives of local organisations, including the Emerald CFA, and Cardinia Shire Council Deputy Mayor Tammy Radford.

Guests are asked to arrive at 2pm for a 2.30pm start.

Help kids find their feet

By Mikayla van Loon Foster carers can play one of the most important roles in a child’s life, being a person of stability and support in a life that may never have had that before.

But as Victoria reaches a crisis point of potentially having 27,500 children in out-ofhome care by 2026, foster care agencies like Anchor are hoping to change the perception of foster caring and are urging people to help a young person find their feet.

This Foster Care Week, running from 11 September to 17 September, is aiming to celebrate carers and the task they have taken on.

When Kym’s niece and her two children needed a place to stay, she was quick to welcome them into her home but once they left, she found she had a hole in her heart where they had been.

“I loved those kids like they were my own.

I could see that I was a positive influence in their life and so I thought to myself, ‘I could love other people’s children’ and that’s when I looked into doing foster care,” Kym said.

For nearly 15 years Kym has been looking after children of all ages, from babies to teenagers.

“I did respite for a couple of boys for quite a number of years. That was my first placement,” she said.

“From then on, I have had lots of different kids and I’ve got two girls permanently now.

They’re all grown up and I’ve got two that are still in foster care.”

While each young person is different, Kym said she tries to focus on being a stable and supportive person in their lives.

“I try to be a positive role model. Teach them right from wrong and teach them morals and try to teach them to be a good honest person,” she said.

Foster carers are urgently needed in Victoria, with carer of 15 years Kym saying it is the most rewarding thing she has ever done and has seen her family grow every time she looks after a child.

Picture: UNSPLASH “I just try to give them a good, stable environment, so that they don’t have to move around all the time because a lot of that happens in foster care.

“Some people don’t want to do long term, whereas I’d rather do long term because then I know I’m actually making a real difference in their lives and giving that stability in a family type unit.”

Kym is the first to admit foster caring can be challenging, particularly with teenagers but staying strong and positive makes a huge difference.

“Teenagers are challenging but you’ve just got to keep in mind that if you can make a bit of difference and keep them safe and try to steer them in the right direction, that’s basically all you can do.”

Throughout all the years and all the challenges, Kym said it is by far “the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.”

“I have seen how far these kids have come and I’m really proud to be part of helping them through their life and through their troubles and giving them that stability, giving them the

love they need, the support they need and trying to give them a normal, happy childhood.”

Anchor CEO Heidi Tucker said often foster caring comes with quite a stigma or preconceived idea of what it would look like but broken down it is really about “looking after the state’s most vulnerable children.”

“There’s probably been some myths about foster care and what it’s about. It isn’t necessarily taking a child full time for the next 10 years and having that commitment,” she said.

“We really are very grateful for people that take children for a weekend or for respite or in an emergency or for a short term period.”

Heidi said people often think their family or personal situation may not fit the criteria for foster caring, whether it be because they don’t have children, are in a same-sex relationship or feel they are too old or too young.

“People make those assumptions about it but foster carers come in all shapes and sizes, all ages, all levels of family structures.”

The current situation of foster care in Victoria is urgent, with Heidi saying “we don’t have enough foster carers of any kind.”

“But in particular, where the system’s really failing is being able to care for those children who might be primary school or early high school aged children who have siblings.”

The result of not having enough foster carers, Heidi said, means children are having to be looked after in hotels and motels by paid staff on a rotating roster.

On top of the struggles through the pandemic, Heidi said “the perfect storm of our economic situation that’s now deteriorating” has left some families unable to take foster children and on the flip side more disadvantaged families are struggling to care for their children seeing more enter the system.

Not only can foster care help the child themselves but Heidi said it has that domino effect, filtering out to the school, the community and later perhaps work, as well as the birth parents.

“The impact of good foster care and its child or young person launching successfully into their adulthood makes a difference for generations to come.”

Seeing the relationships that can be created through foster care, Kym said she has bonds with all her foster children which will never be broken and her family extends every time she has a new foster child.

Kym said with the need at the moment for foster carers she hopes people will give it a go, even just respite care because it really has changed her life.

“If I hadn’t done this I could have been a very selfish adult, just thinking about myself, but this has really changed my life. And I actually feel like I’m blessed from having these children in my life. It’s benefited me, not just them.”

Damaging wildlife deaths on Yarra Ranges roads

By Tyler Wright This winter has brought an increased number of dead and injured wildlife throughout the Yarra Ranges Council and Cardinia Shire Council local government areas (LGAs).

Between 1 June to 31 August 2021, 460 reports of injured or dead animals within the Yarra Ranges LGA were made to Wildlife Victoria, a number which rose to 536 in the same time period in 2022.

The Cardinia Shire LGA has also seen an increase in dead and injured wildlife over the winter period; increasing from 196 reports in 2021 to 266 in 2022.

Carol Seeger runs the Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter based in Kallista, and said this winter season has brought a “terrible increase” in wombats being hit by cars in the Yarra Ranges.

Along with her carers, Carol is currently housing about 30 wombats and joeys found injured.

“Around [Kallista] and Emerald, Menzies Creek I had to put some down [and] they were still alive,” Carol said.

“I had to go out to one near Choo Choos [restaurant] in Emerald, and it died just as I got there.

The lady had pulled it off the road, but she didn’t hit it; the person that hit it just left it.”

Hotspots for injured wildlife callouts include Monbulk, Emerald, Menzies Creek, Macclesfield Road and Wellington Road specifically. According to data from Wildlife Victoria, the Eastern Grey Kangaroo has suffered the most in the Yarra Ranges municipality with 520 reported in the past year, closely followed by 367 ringtail possum reports and 233 wombats.

“People are coming home [at] 5pm or 5:30pm [when] it’s still dark, just on dusk,” Carol said.

goes down Wellington Road and in a couple of weeks she counted 16 dead kangaroos down there.

We’ve had a bit of a reprieve with Covid, not as many people were on the road, so as soon as Covid [restrictions] stopped you started getting more [reports] because animals got used to, very quickly, not as many cars being on the road.”

Wildlife rescuer for Wildlife Victoria and volunteer for the Emerald Monbulk Wildlife Shelter, Leanne Sultana, has attended 10 reports of injured wombats in the past two months, a “drop in the ocean” of the total amount of injured or dead wildlife in the Yarra Ranges.

Leanne said wildlife rescue service Help for Wildlife advised her it received 28 reports of dead wombats hit by vehicles throughout the Yarra Ranges this winter.

Wildlife Victoria CEO Lisa Palma said there has been a 15 to 20 per cent increase in case volumes each year for suck, injured and orphaned wildlife around the state.

“Our wildlife face increasing threats due to habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation, urbanisation and climate change,” Lisa said.

As these injuries increase, volunteers at local wildlife rescues like Carol’s will continue their effort to nurse the wildlife back to health, with a word of advice for motorists heading into spring.

“Pull [wildlife] off the road at least, and don’t lay them on their stomach because they smother the baby, too,” Carol said.

“Either lay them on their side or upside down...always pull them off the road, or ring somebody straight away.”

A blooming good show

The Ferny Creek Horticultural Society held its Spring Show on Saturday 3 September and Sunday 4 September after a three-year hiatus, welcoming approximately 800 visitors through its doors.

Daffodils, camelias, early spring bulbs and perennials were on display, with show entries judged by five specialist judges from the Australian Horticultural Judges Association (AHJA).

Ferny Creek Horticultural Society secretary Eric Watson said there were more people who “spent more money than ever”.

“Spring is the time when everything comes back to life… even the conifers are getting new growth and [are] bright green, they’re [otherwise] dark green,” Eric said.

“There’s bulbs coming up everywhere, rhododendrons growing on the sides of roads in flower.

You get a real sense of coming out of the sleepiness of winter, and so it gives you a real uplift.”

Blue ribbons were awarded for most sec-

tions and trophies were awarded for specialist areas, with children encouraged to enter in various categories including the Judy Austin Encouragement Award for Best Exhibit with $5 on offer for the best display.

According to Eric, there was a mix of locals and out of town visitors exploring the show on the day, and an array of age groups and families.

“We were on Gardening Australia earlier this year and as a result of that, I believe people kept an eye out for the spring show and came from far and wide to come and have a look,” he said.

“It was great for them to be able to showcase all the work that they’ve been doing.

It’s great to have someone come around and and say, ‘oh, that looks fantastic,’ and ‘well done for the show’... we’ve got a lot of feedback like that through email and through social media.

That that gives everybody a lift. You’re not just doing it for yourself or for the society, but you’re doing it and other people are appreciating it.”

The 10 acres of Ferny Creek Horticultural Society gardens are located at 100 Hilton Road, and marked its 90 year anniversary this year.

The Monbulk Quilt Show is returning to the town’s Living and Learning Centre after a three-year hiatus, in an effort to raise funds for the Monbulk CFA Fire Brigade.

For the first time on Saturday 1 October, Monbulk RSL will be home to trades tables for stallholders, helping avoid the elements and setting up marquees.

Event organiser Karen Martin, owner of Mrs Martin’s Quilt Shop in Emerald, said the show which she has run for 18 years is the “biggest” fundraiser in the year for the local CFA. “The girls just come from near and far, they travel with their girlfriends, they always go up the street and support all the shops,” Karen said.

“I let the shops know there’s going to be a quilt show in town, and if they’re not open… maybe it’s worth their while.

Most shops are full in Monbulk now, and that hasn’t been like that for a very long time.”

Mrs Martin’s Quilt Shop staff will collect a $5 entry fee at the door, and use white gloves to handle the quilts and answer visitors’ questions.

Monbulk CFA will run The Quilt Cafe and a sausage sizzle next to the community hub, and attendees will be able to purchase a raffle ticket with donated hampers on

Fostering pets brings joy to carers Have you ever wondered what it would be like to take in a pet to foster?

Foster caring is such an integral part of what we do at Animal Aid. Some animals are not ready to move into their new home straight away and need some extra time to heal, adjust and decompress; that’s where our incredible Foster Carers come in. You might find the most challenging part of fostering cats and kittens is giving them back!

Fostering dogs requires a bit more space and time. Secure yards are needed for dogs to keep them safe. Maintaining a peaceful space that allows the foster dogs to become comfortable and relaxed is key; this might mean initially having as few distractions as possible. Some dogs like to have another dog companion, which is very sweet to watch.

Being careful of the use of control Hi readers, hope you can work this in with a coffee or a cupper.

I have been thinking lately about how much we like to be in control of things.

These things may range from keeping a check on our budgets, to driving carefully to save fuel, to having a go at staff in the super market because the pears are too firm or the apples are too waxed. The latter seem to have a sense of entitlement.

It seems to me that someone with an attitude of ‘I deserve more or better’, are seldom at peace with what they have – always climbing from good to better, to best in what they seek for themselves, and rarely notice that they are using others as stepping stones in the climb. I recently wrote this short piece in a community support forum.

Actually we don’t have much control in many areas of our lives.

Just as well we are not in the hands of a bonsai expert who can retard a potentially giant oak tree by keeping it in a shallow container, constantly pruning the roots back and pruning for height and shape. At fifty years old the bonsaied tree may only stand 250 mil high, while the tree growing naturally may be 20 meters high.

Both have the same biology and both are genuine oak trees.

I often preached a sermon based on the biblical picture of the potter and the clay.

What I liked about that story was that God the potter, had us, the clay, safely in his hands.

Whether we participate or not he is shaping us into our best potential. He knows best what shape we need to be, and if we have watched a potter at work, we know the clay doesn’t argue with the potter about what shape it is becoming.

Be assured that we can trust this potter to make out of our often sad and broken lives, something beautiful.

Keep in mind that our finished product may not be designed to sit on a shelf and look good, but we might be taking on the shape of a vessel for daily use with which to bless others.

Has acting dry as a desert Dual Starring Karen Gillan, Karen Gillan and Aaron Paul Rated M 3/5 Dual is a sadly insubstantial sci-fi satire.

Sarah (Karen Gillan), a terminally ill woman, has herself cloned to spare her family the pain of losing her, but when she unexpectedly recovers, Sarah must duel her double to the death.

Dual has an intriguing first act, with a short but tense action opener and efficient exposition establishing Sarah’s illness, the rules of cloning and the rights of the clone. Sarah and Sarah’s Double have amusing adversarial interplay, as the Double usurps Sarah’s life and proves the more popular of the two. Sarah forms a macabre but endearing friendship with her combat trainer Trent (Aaron Paul).

The world-building is subtle and has some clever dark touches, such as Sarah using hiphop dancing classes to get fit for a deathmatch and paying alimony-like support payments to her Double, and the climax has a well-executed twist.

But beyond the subversive wit, Dual feels sparse and even tedious.

There is an art to delivering an engaging low-key performance (take Daniel Kaluuya in Nope), and dry delivery can throw dark themes into sharper relief, but Dual’s stiff, deadpan acting and extremely descriptive dialogue feel very artificial.

For a superior film about a usurping doppelganger, watch Richard Ayoade’s 2013 dark comedy The Double, and for a more suspenseful, inventive satire about a dystopia with a specific quirk, watch Yorgos Lanthimos’s 2015 film The Lobster.

Song collab

By Tyler Wright Upwey musician James Hampton has teamed up with an Irish lawyer and songwriter Conor Bowman to release a new album, ‘Bubblegum Revolution.’ written during Victoria’s 2021 lockdown period.

Pianist Hampton worked remotely with Bowman to put together a 13 song album drawing from pop and gospel music influences.

The two men had never met, but managed to create a total of 50 songs and collate their favourites into an album, released on Saturday 27 August.

“I just wanted to work with someone whose specialty was lyrics... somehow through a website, I put the word out that I was looking for someone to collaborate with, and [Conor] got in touch with me,” Hampton said.

“There’s one song that’s it’s got a bit of a legal theme to it called Perjury Express.

There’s a little bit of humour in the lyrics, Conor’s got a good sense of humour.”

On the track is the song with the album’s namesake, and a sadder track called ‘Me and the Tin Man’.

“But overall, it’s a happy album with a positive feel and clever lyrics,” Hampton said.

The duo were eventually able to meet and record parts of the album in the studio together as restrictions eased, making the production even more “rewarding”.

“There was times I thought I was never gonna get this done, but we got through it all,” Hampton said.

“It was different doing bits in lockdown...I’d never done that before.”

Hampton was first inspired to play music at five years old when he was gifted a cassette player for Christmas, and started playing mix tapes.

“I was always really interested in music as a kid, and we always had a piano in the house, too...I would always jump on the piano and have a play,” he said.

“There was even a time where once I saw a violin in someone’s house, and I snuck into the house to have go on the violin.

I got caught before I got to have a go, I was pretty devastated and I was scared out of my wits as well.”

Now, Hampton’s musical style is described

by Triple J as a ‘fusion of Michael Buble, Randy Newman and Rufus Wainwright all rolled into one.’

Award winning queer author Roz Bellamy held a story-sharing workshop for young LGBTQI+ identifying people on Saturday 10 September at Burrinja Cultural Centre, encouraging Queer youth to put experiences to paper.

Recently completing a PhD on the topic just months ago, Roz found Queer people between 16 and 20 years of age experienced an improved sense of mental well being and a better sense of self after writing about themselves.

“As one of the writers said on the day talking about their manuscript that they’re working on... it has some non binary characters or gender diverse characters in it, and that when they work on it, it also helps them express something about themselves and really understand their own identity better,” Roz said.

“I just loved the way they put that, because for me, that’s why writing is such an important tool, particularly for young queer people, because often there’s just not other places...

“There might not be anyone at school they feel safe talking to, they might not be comfortable fully out at home, but if they’re able to either write about themselves or about characters who are going through similar things on the page, it can often give them that sense of not even representation, but being able to really explore [and] grapple with something that otherwise has to be an internal process.”

They said people coming together in a similar age group is important, but those of different age brackets can also learn from each other, too.

“One [participant] was talking about Tik Tok and about using those sorts of spaces to make videos about identity and go on rants about things “Sometimes one of the older participants will say something [and] the younger ones are like ‘oh, wow, I didn’t think about that, I didn’t know about that.”

By Tyler Wright Dandenong Ranges families are able to partake in a children’s creative book making workshop this school holidays, with artists from Kids Own Publishing helping participants make their own book using collage.

In partnership with Mums of the Hills and Rescue Logs and Kids Own Publishing, Yarra Ranges Council will hold the workshop on Saturday 17 September from 2.30pm to 4.30pm at Olinda Hall.

“This workshop is one of a suite of programs for children, young people and families being led by Yarra Ranges Council in partnership with local community groups and funded through a Victorian Government grant for storm recovery,” Acting Director of Communities at Yarra Ranges Council Ben Waterhouse said.

“We’re working with a community steering group of local parents to run a creative book

making workshop for children.

The workshop will be facilitated by Kids Own Publishing, a not for profit arts organisation which publishes books by kids for kids.”

After leading the group of four workshops, Kids Own publishing will eventually publish a book using the collages to share with the community.

“This will give children of all ages opportunities to meet, be creative and have fun, while meeting new people in their community,” Mr Waterhouse said.

“We look forward to seeing what our creative young community members create in these workshops.”

Registrations for the workshop are recommended to ensure adequate materials.

Children must be accompanied and supervised by a parent or carer at all times.

Silvan win first flag

By Parker McKenzie Silvan Football Club celebrated winning its first premiership in eight years on Sunday 4 September, capping off a season to remember.

In the Grand Final, Silvan fought off second-placed Surrey Park — the only team to beat them during a regular season that saw Silvan finish first — after playing them in the final regular season round and the semi-final.

Silvan coach Trent Martin said the whole town got out to support the team during the game.

“It was a feeling of relief that we finally that we did it after being probably the best team,” he said.

“We carried a target on our back for the year, it was great to wrap it up at the end.”

With the teams dead even at three-quarter time, Silvan hit a late flurry of goals to secure the win 69-57.

When coach Trent Martin took on the coaching role in 2017, the club had won just 11 games since the 2014 Division Four premiership-winning season. This season, the club won 14 of its 16 games.

Club President Charlie Caputo said the team built upon work put in throughout 2021,

“With a few of the recruits that we got, we probably felt confident enough that we were going to be there at the pointy end,” he said.

“They were the ones that missed out on playing for a year and a half because of it; it was probably a bit sweeter because of it.”

The club will play in Division Three in 2023, with Martin already planning ahead.

“We had a feeling that if we’re at our best,

we could win it,” Martin said.

“We’ve already got a few things in place; I’ve re-signed to help the club get a bit of stability.”

Silvan’s Lee Kimpton scored 109 goals for the club this year, in what Martin called “one of the great seasons” in the Eastern Football League.

“He’s a unique player, he’s done an amazing job,” Martin said.

“He can hold his head high, that’s for sure.”

Demons devastated in a nail biting finish

By Callum Ludwig Saturday 10 September marked Grand Final Day for EFL’s Division One football and it was minor premiers Montrose up against the inform East Ringwood in the season decider for the Under 19.5s.

It wasn’t to be for the Monners however, as East Ringwood came out on top in a nailbiter 6.7, 43 to 7.7, 49.

It was a cagey affair in average conditions.

Montrose had most of the play throughout the first half, consistently putting the East Ringwood defence on the back foot, with the Roos only mustering a major right at the death of each quarter. The first quarter goal came from Connor O’ Brien and the second after a controversial deliberate out-of-bounds free kick against the Demon’s Dylan Coppin was handed to Zachary ‘Chilli Chicken’ Cileceken on the boundary line who slotted home after the siren. Spectators argued that East Ringwood’s number 31, Mitchell Francis, should have been awarded the kick as the player putting the pressure on Coppin as he crossed the boundary line.

Cileceken proved to be a thorn in the Demon’s side all day, even preventing livewire Daniel ‘Chambo’ Chamberlin from taking a spectacular grab in the second quarter. Chambo had climbed high above the pack only for Cileceken to have gotten his hands up in front and taken the mark.

At the start of the second half, East Ringwood began to demonstrate their defensive strength by rebounding the ball quickly out of their defence. Montrose’s ability to win the clearances and get the ball forward never wavered, but East Ringwood got on top of the scoreboard with intercept marks and quick ball movement to isolate their forwards, particularly Cileceken. They kicked three goals to Montrose’s one in the third quarter, with the Monners major coming courtesy of Rylan Howes, who made amends for a downfield free kick that resulted in a goal with his own from a well-taken set shot.

East Ringwood had a one-goal lead at the final change in what promised to end in a thriller.

The Roos took the first scalp of the final quarter and held a 13-point lead for a short while before Montrose pegged it back with a pair of their own. A goal from Dan Chamberlin drew the scores level at 43 apiece and the game was well and truly on.

With only minutes left, Cileceken once again drifted clear in the forward line and took a mark as three Montrose defenders desperately chased back to try and make an impact on the contest. The game ticked into time-on, introduced to the Under 19.5s competition only for the second half of Grand Finals, and the siren could’ve gone at any moment, as the third quarter had only stretched out to 20 minutes and 56 seconds.

No mark was taken and eventually, there was a stoppage as the umpire took the ball. It went up for the rucks and before Montrose could muster up a clear chance for a shot on goal the siren went, prompting despair and delirium from the respective sides.

Zachary Cileceken claimed the Blue Ribbon for best on ground with his five-goal haul.

The best players for Montrose on the final day were Joel Smith, the strapped-up Josh Mentiplay, Noah Warton, Griffin Beardsley-Allen, Ben Schilte and Daniel Frith. Goalkickers were Smith and Mentiplay with 2, and Chamberlin and Howes each with one.

Opponents too good The Monbulk B Grade netballers were the last team representing the Hawks to still be in the Outer East Premier Division finals mix. They headed to Healesville in fairly ideal conditions on a cool and overcast Sunday to play in the Preliminary Final at the Don Road courts.

Standing between them and a Grand Final spot were the experienced ROC (Rythdale-Officer-Cardinia) side. The two rivals had been evenly matched over the season, with Monbulk finishing just half a game ahead of the Kangaroos on the ladder. In their head-to-head clashes Monbulk had triumphed by 3 goals in Round 8, ROC had evened the honors with a 9 goal win in Round 17 before the Hawks claimed a mental edge with a 4 goal win in the Qualifying Final a fortnight ago.

Since the Monbulk Football Netball Club B Grade team had formed in 2006 they had made 9 out of 14 finals series prior to Covid, but had only ever reached the Grand Final on three occasions previously. In 2008 they defeated Warburton for their only premiership while they had since finished runners up to Wandin in 2013 and Woori Yallock in 2017. Their consistent performances during the season had seen them placed second after the home and away matches concluded and were the only side to have taken down Narre Warren over the course of the season.

When the game started it was ROC that settled down quicker to grab an early advantage before the Hawks struck back late in the first quarter and level the scores at 9 all by quarter-time. The numerous and vocal Monbulk contingent of supporters were coming into full voice by this stage. Monbulk looked good in the opening minutes of the second term but then the Kangaroos managed to find gaps, as well as intercepting passes, and by half time the Hawks found themselves down by 5 goals (20-15).

A few changes were swung in the third quarter as the Hawks looked to work their way back into the game. For a while this worked, before ROC finished off strongly to be ahead by 6 at the final change (30-24). With ROC displaying confidence and a fast attacking style by this stage, Monbulk were not able to keep up with their opponents as they were overrun in the final stages to eventually go down by 14 goals. To miss a chance of playing in a Grand Final was a disappointing finish to a season that had produced so many highlights for this team. The club is proud of the way this group has represented themselves and the community over the course of the year. With a fairly young list there is no doubt that they will continue to build in the coming years and success will eventually be the reward for their hard work.

Final cheer for Shiels

By Parker McKenzie Hawthorn legend Liam Shiels called time on an illustrious career on 1 September, after three premierships and over 250 games.

Shiels told the Star Mail he sat down with his family and friends at the end of the season to work out what was the best move going forward.

“We’re really excited about life after footy and the opportunities that may present themselves, I’ll take a couple of months to sit down, relax and assess the options.”” he said.

“I’ve loved spending time with young developing players this year, if there was a development coaching role that came up somewhere it would definitely be something I’d consider.”

Shiels played 255 games for Hawthorn, scoring 90 goals after debuting in 2009 after a junior career at The Basin Football Club and a single appearance for Boronia Football Club.

He said he has already received several offers from local football clubs since announcing his retirement from the professional games, including overtures from his brotherin-law, who captains The Basin Football Club.

“He texts me every day, I’ve heard from him a lot,” Shiels said.

“I’ve probably heard from him more in the past week than I have over the last five years.”

Shiels played his 250th game for Hawthorn on Sunday 5 June, a moment he said was a

special one in his 14-year professional career.

“The milestone games are something that you’ll never forget, but I think the biggest thing is the life experience that I’ve been able to have, all the friends that have been able to make,” he said.

“Obviously, the premierships come to mind straight away as well.”

Shiels won the premiership with Hawthorn on three occasions, in 2013, 2014 and 2015, alongside two minor premierships in 2012 and 2013. He is also a Hawthorn life member and has won several personal accolades during his time at the club.

He said he was fortunate to spend his entire 14-year career at one club, something not many players are able to do.

“Hawthorn Football Club has done so much for me and my family,” he said.

“To finish up there after 14 years and 255 games is something I’m very proud of but I’m also very grateful for.”

Shiels said he wouldn’t have been able to have the career he has had if it wasn’t for the sacrifice, support and help from the people around him.

“Coaches, staff, medical team, and the fans for their support, but also to my family,” he said.

“They are the biggest part of my career. My dad, brother, sister, and my wife Claire, I obviously can’t thank them enough for all the support over the last 14 years.”

Simon Clarke: ‘I’m Gembrook fights til end fortunate I’m from the hills’

By Parker McKenzie When Australian cyclist Simon Clarke spoke to the Star Mail, he was waiting at Paris Airport preparing to travel to Canada.

A long way from his childhood home in the Dandenong Ranges, Clarke has endured a whirlwind of highs and lows over the past year.

“I’m fortunate that I’m from the hills instead of closer to Melbourne because cycling is a very mountainous sport,” he said.

“To have grown up with the Dandenongs at my doorstep was definitely ushered in my development in cycling and was probably a good step in becoming a professional cyclist, giving me a cycling playground that I’ve been enjoying since the early days.”

On Wednesday 6 August, Clarke won the fifth stage of the Tour De France, completing the 157km ride from Lille to Arenberg in 3 hours, 13 minutes and 35 seconds.

The 36-year-old nearly didn’t make it to the stage after his previous team Team Qhubeka folded in December 2021.

Clarke said the period after was one of the most challenging periods of his career.

“I had a two-year contract for last year and this year then the team I was with folded at the end of last year when it ran out of financial backing,” Clarke said.

“It was after the traditional transfer window, nearly all the teams had filled up all their spots and if they hadn’t they’d spent their budget anyway.”

Despite the setback, Clarke would sign with Israel-Premier Tech in January, setting the stage for the most prestigious win of his career.

He said the win was made even sweeter after the difficult situation he found himself in during the offseason.

“It gives you some motivation to really prove that although you were left on the side, you’re still worthy of being a professional bike rider,” Clarke said.

The high was quickly followed by another low, when he was unable to finish the tour after testing positive for Covid-19 before the 15th stage. mailcommunity.com.au

Picture: ISRAEL-PREMIER TECH Clarke first became interested in cycling when his dad, former Yarra Ranges councillor Mike Clarke, entered the family into the Great Victorian Bike Ride when he was an 11-yearold attending Selby Primary School.

He said he quickly become interested in cycling, winning medals at state championships and national competitions while studying at Billanook College in Mooroolbark, before moving to Europe at 16 to chase his dream.

“I was in Bologna, Italy for the first three years. I still finished school by studying from abroad, I did my last two years of high school teaching myself out of textbooks,” Clarke said.

“If you want to play American football, and you’re any good, you have to be in America.

The same goes with cycling; if you want to race at the top level, then you have to be in Europe.”

Clarke turned professional in 2009 when he was 23 and has spent the last 13 years competing around the world in the sport he loves.

His advice for any aspiring cyclist is simple: “chase the dream.”

“Make sure you’re doing it for the right reasons because the challenges of any sport at the highest level are so demanding,” Clarke said.

“You need to be doing what you are passionate about as a number one priority.”

The Lime Greens of Gembrook took on the Blue Boys of Seville at Mac Sparkes Oval in Warburton in the second Semi-Final with a Grand Final spot at stake.

A large crowd was in attendance hoping the weather would hold off, a few raindrops arrived but it didn’t stop their enthusiasm.

Seville was kicking to the left of screen and had a goal on the board in the first few minutes thanks to a snap by The Tip Rat Dylan Broadway.

The Lime Greens seemed to have more of the play but with both teams having 15 inside 50s each and Gembrook’s inaccurate kicking by registering 1-6 for the term saw the Blue Boys head into quarter time with a 7-point lead.

Seville 3-1-19 Gembrook 1-6-12 Gembrook had their first goal of the second quarter when Michael Spud Firrito goaled, which was then followed by another by Miles Wereham saw the Lime Greens start to flex their muscles.

Seville was breaking even in general play but just couldn’t hit the scoreboard.

Deng Nai dominated the ruck whilst Weightman, Strachan and Buster Shore were getting plenty of the pill around the ground.

With the Lime Greens snagging 5 for the quarter the Blues could only manage 1, Gembrook headed into the long break with a 16-point lead.

The Tip Rat Dylan Broadway had one on the board in the first 30 seconds, this followed by a quick reply from Gembrook to steady the ship.

Then Seville hit the scoreboard with goals from Mick Condello, Jackson Lowe, Roberto Petracca and Dylishous Broadway with his second for the term.

The Lime Greens had plenty of free ball themselves earning 13 free kicks for the quarter.

A 6-goal to 4 quarter by Seville saw them head into the orange break 5 points in arrears.

Seville 10-3-63 Gembrook 10-8-68 Seville had their work cut out having to work hard and push into the wind to remain in the contest.

A period of 6 or 7 minutes of solid finals footy saw Seville turn the game on its head.

Playing some of their best footy of the year, goals to Chris “Critta” Niclasen followed by majors to Petracca and Strachany saw the Blues take the game by the scruff of the neck.

In a quarter that seemed to go for an hour ( Philthy Phil Muscara’s stopwatch on a go slow) Seville had busted the game open kicking 3-9 for the quarter and keeping the Lime Greens to 1 solitary point.

Seville will go through to the Grand Final on Friday 23 September at the Yarra Glen Showgrounds.
