St James Primary School celebrated their Feast Day by attending Mass with parents and grandparents and then shared morning tea together.

They were spoilt for choice as parents and grandparents provided a delicious morning tea. It was wonderful to be back together and celebrating as the tight knit community that they are.

At St James they are fortunate to have such a tangible sense of community where their children, staff and families feel connected to each other and are proud to belong to the school.

St James, the son of Zebedee and brother of St John the Apostle is known as the first Disciple to take up Jesus’ invitation to “Come Follow Me“.

In his words and actions, St James chal-

lenges us to be people of faith. St James wrote “it is by my deeds that I will show you my faith“ (The Letter of St James 2:26).

After their feast day celebrations, the middle and senior students played their first round of winter sports in perfect weather conditions.

It is a great opportunity for the children to compete against other Catholic schools and for their children to enjoy the beautiful rural environment.

Reach your full potential Following the excitement, joy, a few tears and a sense of adventure that featured on the first day for Foundation students at St Clare’s Catholic Primary School in Officer it is now time to celebrate 100 Days of School for their Foundation students. This will be celebrated this Friday, 29 July, with everyone encouraged to dress as a 100 Year Old. St Clare’s look forward to seeing some amazing centenarians.

This year the students have also had the excitement of their new architecturally designed playground. The new area includes a ropes course, soccer and football field, shade and cover seating areas, passive play spaces and plenty of new grass where students can run.

This area provides a great facility for Physical Education lessons and opportunities for shared learning experiences in a beautiful outdoor environment. Further developments include an Indigenous Garden and outdoor classroom. This is due for completion in the next few months.

St Clare’s students are particularly enjoying exploring the ‘Ninja’ playground and surrounding play areas.

At St Clare’s they nurture the holistic development of each child. For the St Clare’s family, numeracy and literacy skills are core elements of education; but so is Religious Education

Talk finance with children With the cost of living increasing, now is a better time than ever to teach children about the importance of saving money effectively. With that in mind, financial experts from money. co.uk have compiled a list of their top ten tips for teaching your children about money.

Start with the basics of money and finance How you introduce money to your children will partly depend on their age. A good place to start is getting children comfortable handling cash and coins. Explain to them how money is used to buy things and that it must be earned before it can be spent.

Speak openly about small financial decisions Start getting your child involved with minor financial decisions, such as which brands and items to buy when shopping. This way your child is able to understand the decisions you make while also feeling in control of certain financial choices.

Older children could also help with budgeting while shopping if you ask them to keep a running total of the items you buy. Not only will this help their maths skills, but it can also help them to understand how small items can still add up in price and not everything is affordable on a budget.

Set a good example with your own finances There are no two ways about it, children learn money habits from their parents. Showing them small activities, such as checking the receipt after your shop or putting money into savings can start developing positive habits from a young age.

Encourage your child to ask questions without repercussion in this setting. While you might not necessarily have all the answers,

opening up a dialogue is a healthy way for your child to learn more about finance.

Use pocket money as an incentive for small tasks Using pocket money as an incentive to do chores around the house not only helps you, but it also helps your child learn more about the value of money and what it takes to earn it. Creating a simple plan with a set amount of money for different tasks, along with caps per week or month, is a great way to help your child start understanding where money comes from.

The relationship between work and money, household chores and pocket money is also a great opportunity to show children how to save. If your child has shown interest in a more expensive purchase, you could set them up with an old-fashioned piggy bank where they can ‘deposit’ their earnings or create a chart for them to fill out so they can track how much money they have.

James Andrews from money.co.uk encourages parents to teach children how to handle money from a young age.

“Creating an environment where you can speak more openly with your children about financial decisions is key to them gaining an understanding of the value of money,” Mr Andrews says.

“It’s important to make sure your lessons are age-appropriate and that you continue to involve and teach your children about money as they grow - a healthy relationship with finances starts at a young age, and children learn most of their habits from their parents.”

Focus on sustainability Sustainability is a focus of many schools these days, with students often encouraged to engage in practices such as packing ‘nude’ lunches, recycling and switching off lights when not in use.

How can parents help encourage their kids to be sustainable students?

Here are eight tips from Sustainability Victoria: 1. Lunches - get the kids to make their own lunch and use containers suited to nude food, eliminating the need for disposable wrapping. If you do need to wrap, reusable beeswax wraps can be used. Find out about them online or do a course on making them at your local neighborhood house or community arts centre.

2. Make your own snacks - despite what they say, many kids have plenty of time on their hands. Teach them to make their own muesli bars and other snacks. Be patient, it’s a great life skill. They will learn to be more independent and have fun doing it!

3. Get more value - use the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website to get great recipes to use last night’s leftovers in exciting ways for school (and work) lunches.

4. Use what you’ve got - save money by digging out pens, pencils and other consumables from drawers, cupboards and bags, rather than buying new ones. Many stationery makers also have a range of notebooks made from recycled paper.

5. Textbooks and uniforms - most schools have secondhand book and uniform shops, but your local op shop is also worth trying.

Many high school English and literature books are available for free on Kindle. For other subjects, ask teachers what the difference is with this year’s version of a textbook compared with last year’s, as the older edi-

6. Walking or riding to school is a great way to stay fit. It saves fuel and reduces vehicle pollution and traffic jams at the school gate.

7. Buying a desk, bookcase or filing cabinet?

Second-hand office furniture shops often have very modern goods at a much better price than new and they will last. It is also worth checking out Facebook Marketplace for some great quality bargains.

8. Ask your school to join the ResourceSmart Schools program offered by Sustainability Victoria. Supporting schools within the state to embed sustainability measures

Repeating motor skills from a young age

By Mikayla Van Loon Ever thought about the link between motor skills and children succeeding at school?

Well the link is actually quite high as researched by GymbaRoo. The ‘No Child Should Fail’ schools research project in 2007 and the ‘Unlocking Potential (UP)’ research projects of 2013 and 2015 found that early learning of motor skills helped kids excel academically, emotionally, in leadership roles and on the sporting field.

The Unlocking Potential program is a sensory-motor-perceptual program for primary schools.

In the 2014 to 2015 school year, 314 students took part in 25 minute sessions before the school day started three times a week.

The study found that the students who

participated in the program increased their neurological age by at least 22 months throughout the 12-month period.

Teachers also noticed a change in behaviour, attention and ability to comprehend.

By repeating motor skills from a young age, the brain learns to control movements and in turn allows kids to hold a pencil, sit still and follow a task.

Motor skill development helps stimulate eye muscles and vision, forming better pathways in the brain to look up and down, left and right or near and far, which is essential for reading and learning. .

Although it can be a slow process, babies and toddlers need time to work out how to do certain things in their own developmental stages.

To encourage babies to develop their skills, get them to be as active and unrestricted as possible.

Tummy time is excellent for those inbuilt exploratory movements like crawling, rolling over and discovering.

Dance, swing and sway with babies to nursery rhymes or songs to get their bodies moving.

For toddlers and preschoolers, avoid too much screen time, get children to use their balancing skills like standing on stepping stones, running up and down grass hills or balance along sleeper edges and let them get active.

A child’s school and academic potential can be improved from doing simple things and giving them the chance to explore their motor skills.

Early development of motor skills proves successful for learning in the future.

Japan tea and dignitary Hillcrest Christian College Year 11 and 12 Japanese students, recently participated in a ‘Japanese Day’ on Wednesday, 20 July. The Hillcrest VCE students were able to learn about Japan and experience a taste of Japanese culture.

The occasion was highlighted by a visit from the wife of the Consulate-General of Japan, who shared a presentation about Japanese pop culture, which was greeted by enthusiasm by all present.

“The day began with a special tea ceremony, where students were able to make ‘matcha’ tea in both a traditional and modern style, as well as enjoy some Japanese sweets like ‘mochi’,” commented Mrs Kiko Arakawa the Hillcrest Japanese teacher.

The Hillcrest students were also joined by students from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar in Warragul. The entire class and interactions were conducted in Japanese and the students were able to practise their mastery of the language with each other. The day concluded with the enjoyment of a ‘bento’ meal of their choice.

“It was a fun-filled day and the students were able to work on their speaking skills in preparation for their VCE exams later in the year,” concluded Mrs Arakaw.

Stations on track Major construction has officially begun on the removal of three level crossings and the construction of two new stations at Pakenham and Pakenham East, to be completed in 2024.

The level crossings at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road are being removed by building an elevated rail bridge over the roads in the hopes that it will ease congestion and improve safety.

About 63,000 vehicles use the crossings each week, with 90,000 passengers using the Pakenham and Cranbourne Lines every day.

The Level Crossing Removal Project held an online community meeting on Tuesday 26 July to provide an update on how the project was progressing.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale attended the Zoom meeting and said she was looking forward to getting insight from members of the public.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing everyone on site and at the community forums and

events that are going to be happening,” Ms Crugnale said.

“Major works start tomorrow (Wednesday 27 July) - this is really quite massive for our area.“ LXRP deputy director Ian Ransley said the Pakenham Line was one of the busiest lines in Melbourne.

“The exciting thing were delivering for this project is a new premium Pakenham station located approximately in the same position of the current Pakenham station,” Mr Ransley said.

“We’re building a new station at East Pakenham to that growing area and these stations

will be open in 2024 and will be a lot easier to walk up and access.

“It’s an elevated structure from McGregor Road all the way through to Racecourse Road, creating some amazing open space for the community to enjoy.”

Residents were informed of 24-hour works starting from Wednesday 27 July until Monday 8 August for piling, installing overhead cables and signals and drainage.

Project manager Marc Douez said up until now, completed works may not have been visible.

Make a difference today

By Jamie Salter A White Ribbon event designed to spread awareness of violence against women was held in Pakenham last week, thanks to a partnership between Aligned Leisure, Outlook and the Cardinia Shire Council.

More than 75 people attended the event held at Outlook’s function room (an accredited White Ribbon workplace) including chief executive Carol Jeffs, mayor Jeff Springfield and councillor Tammy Radford.

The annual White Ribbon Awards were presented to people who have made outstanding contributions to the Cardinia community in reducing family violence.

The 2022 Gary McQuillan award (named after former Cardinia Shire Council chief executive) went to joint winners Fiona Cost and Lorna Lablache, and the Tony Fitzgerald award (named after former Outlook chief executive) went to family violence and housing support service Wayss.

Ms Cost was acknowledged for her work in holding the two-day Together We Can summit in May. “Without everybody here and the whole community doing what they do, spreading the word and advocating for preventing violence, respect, equality and safety - particularly for children - we wouldn’t be where we are in Cardinia today and I think everybody knows about Together We Can and the importance of stopping family violence,“ Ms Cost said.

Wayss family violence housing coordinator Alan Thomas accepted the award on behalf on the organisation.

Outlook chief executive Sam Sondhi said there had been a family violence crisis throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

“It’s about having that conversation about

what healthy relationships look like,“ Mr Sondhi said.

“More than 80 per cent of women with a disability will experience family violence and our purpose for existing as an organisation is to support these women.“ MC for the day and Aligned Leisure chief executive Shane Dunn said the event was important not only for organisations but for service providers, businesses and community members.

“As a new father of a two year old daughter and a little girl on the way I feel that responsibility, and I hope in the future it’s more of a celebration of what we’ve achieved as opposed to the issues we face today.“ This year’s event also showcased a range of Cardinia Shire’s local community services including The Orange Door, Wayss Housing Support Services, Trudi’s Angels and Purton Place Pre-loved Op Shop.

Attendees were encouraged to bring donations for these community organisations.

GYG to employ 130 locals

By Jamie Salter There were long lines in Pakenham on Tuesday as locals joined the queue to pick up $5 burritos and bowls and free coffee at the Guzman y Gomez (GYG) grand opening event.

The new store is about two years in the making, offering fresh Mexican food including tacos, enchiladas and burritos.

The restaurant currently employs 100 staff members, with 30 more roles to be filled.

The Pakenham restaurant is headed by Berwick resident and franchisee Simon Baker, who has also run the GYG in Fountain Gate for seven years and a branch at Monash University for six years until it was recently sold.

Mr Baker said he was excited to see the branch open in Pakenham.

“We’re really excited; we’ve been working hard in the last couple months recruiting and training our staff at the Fountain Gate store,” he said.

“It’s also giving Pakenham residents another option for fast, clean, fresh food.

“We’re totally preservative free, so we focus on being a real restaurant with unprocessed fruit and vegetables - it’s showing that fast food doesn’t have to be rubbish.”

Throughout Covid-19 lockdowns, the brand’s popularity continued to grow as takeaway and delivery orders picked up.

“A lot of people discovered us through delivery during lockdown and it stuck - now they’ve converted to walk-in customers,” Mr Baker said.

Copper and Fox property hits the market with EOI

By Jamie Salter Popular Pakenham restaurant Copper and Fox is up for sale in what is being described as “a secure investment opportunity”.

Located at Lakeside Boulevard, Copper and Fox is in a prime position close to Coles, Aldi, Bunnings and the Cardinia Cultural Centre.

Dandenong real estate agency Facey Property will be selling the building by way of expressions of interest.

The current owners are less than two years into a possible 20-year lease, paying $96,410 in rent per year.

Agent Matt O’Dea said the current owners weren’t involved with the business and have been the sole owners since the building was constructed.

“They are selling it for an investor to run,” Mr O’Dea said.

“We’re quoting the market from $1.8m to $1.9m. We’ve had really strong online enquiries and were starting to have inspections there now.

“The restaurant is on a five-year lease that commenced in 2020 and they’ve got 15 years worth of options to extend the lease.”

He said the sale of the building shouldn’t disturb the restaurant’s operation.

“There’s fairly limited competition for what they provide, it’s in a strong location and offers functions upstairs - so it has a lot going for it.”

Committee’s new wheels The Inner Wheel Club of Pakenham is welcoming its new committee for 2022-2023 after holding a changeover event at the Deep Creek Golf Club. About 49 guests attended the event on 16 July, where the official ‘Collar of the President’ was passed from Maureen Lindau to Helen van Diemen.

Attendees included members and partners from Pakenham and Phillip Island Inner Wheel clubs. Rotary Club of Pakenham president Terry Williams accompanied his wife Alwyn Williams, who is the current Inner Wheel Australia council member.

The evening commenced with the Lighting of the Flame of Friendship by A62 District chair Diane Blackwood.

Diane spoke briefly about the attributes of Inner Wheel and acknowledged the international president Zenaida Farcon’s theme for the year - Work Wonders.

Incoming president Helen van Diemen welcomed several members of her family, including husband Peter, mother Pat Impey, sisters Jo Impey and Laraine Cunningham, together with daughters Tori, Kalinda, and Bree, and granddaughter Olivia.

Helen Reid OAM, a lifelong friend of Helen’s, was also in attendance.

Among the apologies received, a special message was sent from Poroochi and Yezdi Batliwala, from the Inner wheel club of Poona Downtown, India.

Inner Wheel Australia council member Alwyn Williams proposed a toast to International Inner Wheel. Alwyn challenged members to read about and learn from other clubs, not only locally, but around Australia and the world.

Several comments were made regarding all the work and activities achieved during Maureen’s year, with historian Deb James capturing all the highlights.

$650K for clean-up The Victorian Government is providing $650,000 in grant funding to support local communities affected by the June 2021 storm.

As part of a regional partnership, Cardinia Shire Council will share the grant with Yarra Ranges Council to support volunteer cleanup groups, Habitat for Humanity Victoria and Treasuring Our Trees.

The funding will allow Cardinia Shire Council and Yarra Ranges Council to work with Habitat For Humanity and Treasuring our Trees and connect known vulnerable residents with the volunteer groups.

The grants will also support equipment purchases and critical training opportunities.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Jeff Springfield said council was proud to be part of a project that will have positive outcomes for all storm affected residents.

“Cardinia Shire Council is a proud partner in this important project, which will provide much-needed assistance to our storm-impacted residents with what is, for some, a huge clean-up task ahead,” Cr Springfield said.

“We look forward to working alongside Habitat for Humanity and Treasuring our Trees in delivering positive outcomes for our community.“ Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer organisation who launched a storm recovery program assisting vulnerable homeowners to clean up their properties by cutting and removing fallen trees, clearing debris and conducting minor home repair.

Since the storm they have received more than 100 requests for help and have undertaken over 40 storm-related volunteer days.

Habitat for Humanity executive director Philip Curtis said the work undertaken by

Break-in at library Police are investigating following a break-in at Pakenham Library on Sunday 24 July.

“It is understood a male teenager forced entry to the back window to the library on Henry Street,” police said.

“He was disturbed by an employee at about 7pm and fled the scene on foot.”

There were no injuries during the incident.

It is unknown whether anything was stolen at this stage and the investigation is ongoing.

Ten released Ten males have been released “pending further enquiries” after being arrested in Hallam over a cross-town police pursuit early on 25 July.

Three men aged 18, three boys aged 17, two aged 16 and two 15-year-olds were questioned

by Moorabbin CIU detectives later that morning. They have not been charged.

Police had followed an allegedly stolen Volkswagen Tiguan, which was travelling in convoy with an allegedly stolen BMW sedan on Punt Road, Richmond about 12.45am.

With the help of the Air Wing, police followed the VW through the city and South East suburbs at speeds of more than 170 km/h.

Communication can be a daily struggle for nonverbal students, which is why not-for-profit State Schools’ Relief is hoping an investment in technology will make all the difference.

The Dandenong South based charity has partnered with Bank First and ASCA to secure $90,000 funding to invest in 423 iPads for non-verbal students at more than 90 specialist schools throughout Victoria.

Narre Warren’s Dandenong Valley Special Developmental School (SDS) is one school to benefit from the initiative, with 10 of its students receiving iPads to help them communicate both at school and at home.

Sue Karzis, CEO of State Schools’ Relief, explained that providing non-verbal children with an iPad enables them to have their own voice at all times.

“The iPads for non-verbal students is one of the most impactful programs that we run at State Schools’ Relief; to be able to provide a young person with the means to communicate their wants and needs is transformational,” she said. “iPads give these students a voice, some-

Dandenong Valley SDS speech pathologist Geraldine, who works closely with students at the school, agreed the iPads would have a profound impact on the students.

“If [the students] don’t have a communication system, it results in frustration and students can become withdrawn from learning,” she said.

“Every child has something to say or a contribution to make and without the iPads to allow them to express themselves, we can’t be sure what they need.

“What the iPad does is it adds to whatever communication the child already has; it’s a supportive tool to add to allow them to get message across and participate.”

She said communication skills should be a human right, regardless of intellectual ability.

“It all comes down to accessibility. Ultimately, communication isn’t just about their education, it’s an important life skill and something we try to teach them so they can be as independent as possible once they leave school,” Geraldine said.

“A lot of the time families with children with disabilities are faced with a lot of medical fees and they often can’t afford expensive electronics like iPads, which is why State Schools’ Relief is such an important initiative.”

Top honours for Gemmell Casey Grammar School’s Juna Gemmell has been honoured with a Premier’s VCE Award after scoring a perfect 50 in Outdoor and Environmental Studies during Year 11 in 2021.

The Premier’s VCE Awards recognise the outstanding results of individual students and pays tribute to the principals, teachers and families who play a valuable role in supporting these students during their VCE studies.

Ms Gemmell, 17, completed Units 3 and 4 Outdoor and Environmental Studies in 2021 as an accelerated subject in Year 11.

Casey Grammar School principal Fiona Williams said the award was exciting news and well deserved.

“Juna’s achievement epitomises the emphasis on excellence that we instil in all our students,” Ms Williams said.

“It’s an incredible achievement for a Year 11 student. Ten of Juna’s classmates received a study score of 40 or above, which places each of them in the top six-to-seven per cent in the state.

“The average study score of 39.05 places Casey Grammar School among the state’s highest performing classes in this subject.”

The awards were presented in a special ceremony on Thursday 20 July.

Ms Williams added that Juna is also an excellent swimmer, but focused on her studies in 2021 and again this year for Year 12.

“Juna has an incredible work ethic and dedication,” Ms Williams said.

“She perseveres and seeks help and clarity when needed.

“Juna completed many, many, practice exam questions and reviewed sample responses to aid her understanding and knowledge.

“This is a huge achievement as she now

Juna’s Outdoor and Environmental Studies teacher, Anthony Brown, said it was, “extremely exciting and rewarding” to have played a role in Ms Gemmell’s success.

By Marcus Uhe Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) teams have begun to demolish houses on Camms Road as part of works to remove the level crossing.

Eighteen parcels of land were acquired, including 17 residential properties and one commercial property, in order to build a road bridge over the train line.

Kellie Banks is one resident whose former home of 15 years was demolished on Friday 22 July.

Ms Banks purchased the four-bedroom, two-bathroom property in 2006 and had renovations completed on the property.

Ms Banks and her sons, 11-year-old Ryder and eight-year-old Cruz, travelled from their new home in Drouin to Cranbourne to observe the aftermath of the demolition.

Live entertainment returns The West Gippsland Arts Centre has hit the ground running in its first post-Covid season, with a series of recent hit shows including Human Nature, Jon Stevens, Kate Ceberano, Xavier Rudd, John Williamson, Kate Miller-Heidke, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, The Wiggles and more.

National toy drive a hit

By Jonty Ralphsmith The National Servicemen Association had its annual toy drive at the Dandenong RSL on Saturday 9 July.

For the 19th consecutive year, the association has raised money for toys which are then distributed by the Salvation Army to underprivileged children across the state.

About 70,000-80,000 toys have been provided to the Salvation Army as part of the ‘Christmas in July’ fundraising efforts, with Salvos almost able to fill a five-tonne van at this year’s drive.

Bikes and trikes are among the items on offer for parents to pick out for their sons and daughters - there is something for children of all ages.

“There is all sorts of stuff, it is a massive variation of toys that we get and I would be very surprised if there wasn’t something there for everyone,” Mike Smith, president of National Servicemen’s Association said.

WBD & FF Group, Dandenong South is the manufacturer responsible for providing the toys, which Mr Smith thanked.

Dandenong RSL and Commonwealth Bank Fountain Gate also contributed funds.

Mr Smith said the association contributed to Salvos as Salvos assisted servicemen in writing letters and lending an ear for so long.

“Most of the guys had never been away from home so their help was important,” Mr Smith said.

“It is our way of paying them back for what they did.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Victoria Police should investigate Operation Watts’s corruption allegations against the Labor Party, says the State Opposition.

Opposition police spokesperson Brad Battin said he referred the “egregious alleged cases of fraud, perjury and misuse of public office and funds” to the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police and the Director of Public Prosecutions for investigation.

“Those responsible must be held to account,” Mr Battin said.

“If any other Victorian stole money from their workplace, they would be fired and charged. Why does Daniel Andrews think the rules don’t apply to him?”

Mr Battin noted that Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass found a lack of cultural change in the Labor Party since her investigation of the ALP’s $388,000 ‘red shirts rort’ four years ago.

“Daniel Andrews cannot sweep this under the carpet. Labor has again been caught out rorting public money and resources for their own benefit.”

Opposition Upper House leader David Da-

vis called on the Labor Party to repay “at least” $1,348,750 of misappropriated taxpayer funds outlined in the Operation Watts report.

The misuse included ALP factional operatives employed as electorate office workers who did “very little (if any) legitimate” work as well as more than $1.1 million of grants to Labor-linked community groups.

Greens acting leader Tim Read said voters needed to answer if Premier Daniel Andrews had taken “full responsibility” for the Operation Watts report.

“Many of his proposed solutions to the problem should have been introduced years ago because Labor’s branch stacking culture has been an open secret for years.

“Voters backed candidates who called for stronger integrity measures in the federal election and I hope that in the coming state election they look for parties who can hold this government to account.”

After the report was released on 20 July, Mr Andrews apologised and declared he’d take “full responsibility” for the misconduct.

He announced the government would implement all 21 recommendations from the Operation Watts report.

On top of that, Mr Andrews proposed extra integrity measures on all political parties.

Mr Read said “rules designed to ensure only genuine people are on Labor’s membership list are only half the answer, Labor’s culture needs to change”.

“We generally support measures that clean up politics, but we’ll need to examine the legislation, to ensure that measures needed to clean up Labor’s mess don’t erect needless barriers against getting involved in politics.”

Operation Watts was a joint investigation conducted by the Victorian Ombudsman and the Independent-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC).

In a joint statement, the Ombudsman Deborah Glass and IBAC Commissioner Robert Redlich welcomed Mr Andrews’ pledge to implement the report’s recommended reforms in full.

“We look forward to all parties and the cross bench accepting and implementing the reforms,” they stated.

“We will be following up in due to course to ensure that the recommendations have been adequately acquitted.”

Watts scandal not decisive, says expert

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A damning anti-corruption bodies’ joint report on Labor branch-stacking comes at a “problematic time” for the State Government but won’t have much standalone impact, a political expert says.

Months ahead of the November State Election, the IBAC and State Ombudsman’s Operation Watts report came after recent “big changes” for the government’s Cabinet, Monash University politics senior lecturer Zareh Ghazarian noted.

“It’s been distracting for the government.

But I’m not sure how much impact that it will have on who people vote for.”

The ‘Red Shirts’ scandal, which led the Victorian ALP to repay $388,000 of misused taxpayer funds, didn’t seem to dent the government’s vote at the 2018 election, Dr Ghazarian noted.

On the other hand, the recent Federal Election revealed electoral “volatility”, with a swing to independents and non-major parties.

Even while winning government, Labor’s candidates in South East heartland seats suffered falls in primary votes.

“It suggests that voters aren’t necessarily welded on. “(The IBAC report) won’t have much impact on its own, but it may give more reasons for people looking to not vote for a major party.”

Traditionally, voters’ intentions are based on healthcare, education and transport as well as the economic situation.

He led the Coalition to a dismal 2018 election result, with few improving signs in the latest poll.

A Roy Morgan survey in July recorded a 59.5 to 40.5 two-party preferred lead for the Victorian ALP over the Coalition.

Labor’s Daniel Andrews led Mr Guy 64.5 to 34.5 per cent as preferred Premier, according to the survey.

“At the moment, the Coalition is coming from a very low base in 2018 but because of the

volatility – as we have seen in Queensland – oppositions can make up ground very quickly.

“Looking at the polls, the Premier and Labor has retained its popularity. At the moment, (Mr Andrews) would still be a very strong asset for the government.

“Governments tend to lose support the longer they’re in office. There’s been some renewal in terms of the make-up of the Ministry, which is important in a long-term government.

“The constant has been Daniel Andrews.

“Looking at the numbers, this election is Labor’s to lose.

“They enjoy a very big majority in the Lower House and it’s a difficult thing for an opposition to win the seats they need to form government.”

Australian not-for-profit The Nappy Collective is encouraging Casey parents and locals to drop off new or leftover disposable nappies, with the ambitious goal to provide one million fresh nappies to families experiencing hardship.

The organisation’s annual Nappy Collective campaign is running until Sunday 31 July, with 230 collection points across Australia accepting donations of fresh nappies, including multiple dropoff points in the City of Casey.

Several businesses in the South East, including Berwick Pharmacy, ANZ Bank Branch Fountain Gate, Salts of the Earth Narre Warren South, and Pharmasave Eden Rise, are participating in the annual campaign, before the nappies will be collected and redistributed to families experiencing nappy stress.

The Nappy Collective chief executive officer Sarah Witty said some 280,000 Australian children each year don’t have their nappy changed as often as they need to, which can lead to skin irritation, urinary infections and emotional distress.

“A lack of access to clean nappies may be due to issues of financial hardship, homelessness or escaping domestic violence, or those impacted by natural disasters, such as the recent flooding we have seen in New South Wales and Queensland,” she said.

Berwick Pharmacy is one collection point which has participated in the nappy collection drive every year it has run, according to pharmacy retail manager Jaki Crow.

“For us, I believe there’s quite a high percentage of families in crisis in the Casey area, so as a community pharmacy, we really like to support smaller causes where we can,” Mrs Crow said.

“From a personal point of view I’m quite passionate about it. I’m a grandmother to two little ones, so I know what it’s like when they’re stuck in a dirty nappy for long periods and end up with horrible nappy rash.”

She said the local community has been very supportive of the collection drive in previous years and hopes this year’s drive will be similar.

“There have been times where we’ve had to fill three or four cars with the nappies to take them back to The Collective…we’ve never had a time where we haven’t had heaps of donations, which is really great.

“I’m hoping this year we can collect heaps to make up for the two years we missed out on [due to Covid].

“I hope the community gets behind it and supports the cause - every little bit helps.”

Locals can visit their nearest drop-off point to donate newly purchased disposable nappies, disposable swim nappies, nappy pants and leftover, opened packets of disposable nappies that are no longer needed (such as when a child outgrows their nappy size).

Cardinia Shire Council undertakes many initiatives at both a corporate and community level to reduce the impact on the environment and to leave a healthy planet for many generations to come.

Council has committed to supplying 100 percent of Cardinia Shire’s electricity needs through renewable energy, sourced from two Victorian wind farms.

This is on track for Council to reach its two emission reduction targets by the expected timeframe of 2024. Council’s first target is reaching net zero emissions across the entire council region, while the second is achieving a 36 percent reduction in per capita community emissions, based on 2012 levels.

Further to these targets, Council has been facilitating the continuous installation of energy efficient resources in public areas. As new technology becomes available, existing items are replaced as they reach their end of life period. For example, should a public light require a replacement bulb upon the existing bulb’s expiration, it will be replaced with a sustainable and a more environmentally friendly alternative.

Since 2014, Cardinia Shire Council has completed three rounds of upgrades on street lights, while the fourth round began upon the arrival of the new financial year on July 1. The upgrade of mercury vapor street lights with LED alternatives is expected to save approximately $143,000 annually on energy and maintenance costs. Aside from lighting, Council also implements the use of recycled materials in the construction of roads and benches, where regulations allow.

Council doesn’t recommend residents touch or try to remove the rubbish on their own, as it may pose a danger to health and safety or compromise evidence. Offenders may be charged under the Environmental Protection Act 1970 and if found guilty, face a maximum penalty of $6342.

I find it very rewarding knowing that I have helped someone who was really down find their passion for life again.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Film sings to the heart

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A life-affirming doco set in a Dandenong school has captured hearts and awards all over the world.

Singfest: The Literacy of Music is now set to share the uplifting feats of students and staff with SBS TV audiences across Australia.

Film-maker Amel Tresnjic captured nine schools celebrating music and song at Emerson School on 3 September 2015.

Sounds simple, but it was described by one of the students as “the best day of my life”.

That day has lived long in the 49-minute film, which was first released on You Tube.

It has since earned 18 international awards for documentary excellence including Best Inspirational Film at the New York Film Awards in 2019.

Mr Tresnjic said he had wanted to show what a unique place that Emerson School was and the “tremendous difference” it made in the lives of children with special needs.

He also wanted to highlight the “power” of the arts and music on the development of children.

“The lack of understanding of this creates roadblocks for many of them, in particular for students with disabilities.

“What Emerson School has demonstrated is how music literacy can be successfully used as a tool to make these roadblocks disappear and elevate students to higher achievements.”

Mr Tresnjic has won 55 international film festival awards, including for films set at the nearby Dandenong North Primary School where his wife Azemina Tresnjic teaches.

She features in an upcoming doco Giving Back – which charts former students such as Azemina who have returned to Dandenong North Primary as teachers.

His series of Dandenong-school films focus on “human stories of school leaders and

“Both remind us that helping others generates a strong source of inner happiness.

“I think that is the reason why the films have won hearts across the globe.

He seeks to find true stories of “real heroes”, to “share new things” and “elevate our understanding”.

And to remind viewers about “the good in the world”.

He nominates Emerson School principal John Mooney and Dandenong North Primary principal Kevin Mackay as his “heroes”.

“They are my definition of what every leader should be like. “They are visionaries who truly understand the needs, not only of students but also their staff and overall community.

“Both have dedicated their lives to helping the disadvantaged build successful careers, and most importantly set a high standard for

virtues in the community.”

Singfest now joins another of Mr Tresnjic’s docos on the SBS catalogue - Talk for Life: English as an Additional Language.

This film looks inside an English language support class for migrant-background students at Dandenong North Primary.

“I am very proud to have Singfest join Talk for Life on SBS. “I am most proud that the films will in turn inspire people and make a positive contribution to society at large.”

Singfest’s participating schools were Dandenong North Primary, St Gerard’s Primary, Silverton Primary, Lyndale Greens Primary, Rosewood Downs Primary, Wooranna Park Primary, Lyndale Secondary College, Dandenong High School, St Margaret’s School Berwick and Emerson School.

Planning in seven steps ‘Pressure creates diamonds’ is a well-known saying and it is certainly true that often amazing results can be achieved through stretch goals.

However, too much sustained pressure can result in high stress levels, which are not good.

If this becomes significant, you may even pay your doctor a visit and if you do, chances are that a good doctor will ask you: “What do you not feel in control of?”

This is because stress is a fundamentally a symptom of not being able to manage/control things and can lead to a range of other unpleasant conditions. If you are a business owner, you probably know exactly what I am talking about!

A simple way to help reduce stress levels is to create a plan, but this in itself may seem daunting so here is my list of seven simple steps to create a realistic plan (and hopefully relieve stress!).

1. Identify the tasks to be tackled.

Just listing the things that need to get done is the first important step since as you do, you are almost certain to think of other related tasks that should also be considered.

Whilst it may seem like you are now just compounding the problem, in reality it is a very good thing since if the tasks do need to get done, at least you won’t get surprised by these part way through.

2. Derive a prioritised list.

Whenever you plan, focus on what (scope), when and how (at a high level). If there is limited time, then identifying which tasks must be done versus those that could be postponed is critical, otherwise you run the risk of overloading the team and/or making commitments you can’t keep.

3. Estimate associated effort and required timeframes.

If the work you are doing is not completely new, chances are that you will have a rea-

Consider who will be doing which tasks and factor in the availability of everyone involved, e.g., if someone is only available for 80 per cent of the time, then you need to plan a ‘full-time’ four-day task to take five days. In this way you can allow for unexpected events (sickness, unexpected customer issues, etc) and keep the plan on track.

4. Identify task dependencies.

When you have your final list of tasks, identify any relationships that exist between them. It may be possible that task B cannot start until task A has completed or task D can’t complete until task C has finished.

These dependencies will have a direct impact on the overall timeline for the activities and thinking about these in advance will save pain down the line.

5. Produce a visual representation of the plan.

It is hard to overstate how important this is and there are many ways to do this. For me, the best tool is MSproject, but there are a number of good, free planning tools online that can be used. By using the cells in an Excel spreadsheet to represent days or weeks, you can colour in each cell associated with the task to provide a visual view of the task duration. The real benefit of the visual representation is that you get to see where there are gaps but also, more importantly, where too much is happening in a particular time

6. Verify points of overload/pressure.

This follows directly from the point above and requires looking at possible alternatives, e.g., can you add extra staff, extend out, or reschedule or re-sequence certain tasks?

7. Finalise and monitor the plan.

Lions leap into contention

By Tyler Lewis The plot thickens. A win for Pakenham and a loss for Monbulk has accelerated the Lions beyond the Hawks into fifth position on the Outer East Premier Division ladder on percentage.

And without even gracing the field this weekend, the Lions have the opportunity to go a win clear inside the five.

Despite the first-half complacency checker, the Lions rallied to defeat Upwey Tecoma 12.15 (87) to 11.11 (77).

Pakenham led by just three points at quarter and half-time, before booting seven goals to one in the premiership quarter.

And while the Tigers proceeded to fire off five unanswered goals in the last term – making it 12.5 to 1.3 for the side kicking to the entrance end in the second half – there wasn’t a breathe of wind.

As the Lions were securing their seventh win of 2022, Monbulk was suffering its sixth loss of the season at the hands of Woori Yallock, 12.11 (83) to 7.18 (60).

Despite trailing by 29 points at the final change the Hawks were a sniff, before booting themselves out of the game by kicking 1.10 to the Tigers 1.4.

The wayward kicking was contagious for the Hawks; Lachlan Beecroft (0.2), Taylor Joyce (3.2),Thomas Trezise (0.2), Glenn Strachan (1.3) Nicholas Wall (0.2) and Mitch Dekker (0.2) all kicked multiple behinds across the course of the afternoon.

The loss for Monbulk now creates an intriguing round of football.

Monbulk will make the highly-publicised trip to Wandin this Saturday, while Pakenham has the bye.

With the Hawks heading in huge underdogs, and the bye offering four points despite not actually recording a win, the likelihood of Pakenham surging a win clear of Monbulk without playing is realistic.

While the result each week for Officer is almost irrelevant, the development, adaptability and ticker is paramount.

The Roos showed it all in spades in Saturday’s slog with Wandin, giving the Dogs an almighty scare.

“We did match them for most of it, Troy (Tharle) sort of thought it was one that got away,” he said.

“Their big key forward (Clinton Johnson), he kicked six straight from six kicks, I don’t think he missed a shot, so to have a gun forward like that at your disposal is pretty good, pretty handy.

“It was good for the young blokes to show they can match it with these stronger teams in the Outer East.”

O’Loughlin has fronted up to his players after some disappointing performances this season, and although they didn’t get the win on Saturday, his message after the game was a much easier discussion.

“It was more so that it shows the young blokes that we’re going in the right direction with the way we’re playing at the moment,” he said of his message post game.

“You know they could’ve stepped back for the end of the year, but they’re trying to build each week towards playing better footy.

“Whether that’s pressure, getting the skills up, getting to training, just making sure we’re heading in the same direction - because there is good young talent there.

“We had another first-gamer on the weekend, Riley Perkins, he didn’t look out of sorts at all… which was really handy.

“And Hutto (Ryan Hutton) it was his second game and he played really well as well, they’ve come a long way in a short time.”

Narre Warren, meanwhile, has yet again flexed its already exceedingly obvious muscles, with a thrashing win over Mt Evelyn.

The Magpies kicked truly on 26 occasions, while the Rovers could only muster two majors – both of which came in the second term.

The Pies 26.22 (178) to 2.5 (17) victory is the Pies fifth 100-point win of the season.

Electrifying Eels way to slippery for Sunshine Cowboys

By David Nagel The passion and excitement of big-time rugby league was on full display at Comely Banks Recreation Reserve as the Pakenham Eels took on a multitude of foes on Saturday.

The Eels Second Grade Men’s team hosted Sunshine Cowboys in a feisty round-15 clash, while the Pakenham juniors welcomed teams from Casey Warriors and Melton Broncos for round-11 encounters.

All teams across the Eels spectrum were in action, apart from the under-15 girls who were forced to sit on the sidelines due to a forfeit from their opposition.

The Eels men’s team would eventually prevail 32-0 against the Cowboys, but not before an early arm-wrestle that saw both teams defensive lines on top.

Scoring was difficult for both sides, until a penalty was awarded to the Eels just before half time with the guilty Cowboy sin-binned.

The Eels took full advantage of the freshlycreated open space…scoring twice to open up a healthy half-time lead.

Rain began to fall at the beginning of the second half, and so too did the Cowboys defence, which lead to some frustrations for the visitors.

A wayward swinging arm resulted in an Eels player being clothes-lined and an automatic send off for the Cowboys.

this year and they once again put on a clinic, showing discipline in their offence as well as defence. There were incredible signs of ball movement, with the young Eels sliding the ball across the ground to catch the Melton Broncos defence regularly out of position.

Atticus Buchanan, Sam Afoa and Andrew Frierdich scored twice each for the Eels, with Blake Henderson and Isileli Tuitupou also making try-scoring contributions.

The Eels defeated the Melton Broncos 36-0.

Tormey takes on Renegade challenge The Melbourne Renegades will launch the second male series of Renegades Recruit on August 1.

And Pakenham’s Dale Tormey will be one of the 12 cricketers from across Victoria’s community competitions that will feature in the three-episode TV program, which will air over three Monday nights via the Renegades Facebook Page and 7Plus.

Tormey held the record for most runs at an Under-19 National Championships before his record was broken in 2016 by current Victorian player Will Pucovski.

Over the course of the first two episodes, the squad of 12 players will be whittled down to a final three – with a public vote to determine the winner for episode three.

The winner of the show will be invited to link up with a Renegades Academy squad, which is set to play matches against a Stars Academy team and some other exciting opposition in the lead-up to BBL|12.

They will also receive $1,000 worth of cricket equipment, thanks to Kookaburra, and a TCL 55” QLED Google TV, thanks to new program partner, TCL. The winner’s club will receive $2,000 worth of Kookaburra gear, plus 100 tickets to a BBL match, a training session at the CitiPower Centre and other Renegades prizes.

“It’s fantastic to have our male Renegades Recruit program returning for a second season and to really build on the success of last year,” Renegades Head Coach, Simon Helmot, said.

“It was great spending a day with this group of players and to learn a bit about their cricket and life journeys.

“There’s no doubt we had some high-quality community cricketers involved, from various metropolitan and regional competitions.

Top teams taking dead aim at Bullseyes

By David Nagel A clear gap is beginning to open up between the top four teams and the remainder of the competition after a defining round five in the South West Gippsland Dart League (SWGDL).

Last season’s premiers, Just Social, have the slenderest of margins over the also-undefeated Warriors, with just one peg separating the two teams at the top of the ladder.

Just Social extended its perfect record with an 11-4 victory over sixth-placed Mud Rats, while the Warriors were in awesome form in a 14-1 demolition of bottom-placed Bullseyes.

Snipers, third, had a 10-5 win over the Wizards, while Paky One made it a great week for the top four with a 13-2 victory over Fore.

And in the closest match-up of round five, Gembrook opened its SWGDL Winter Season account with a hard-fought 9-6 victory over Rebels.

Pakenham Warriors women are back on the winners list!

After starting the season reasonably well, Pakenham fell out of finals contention and have been in a two-month form slump, before the Warriors’ two games on the weekend.

Against second-placed Bulleen they won by nine points, led by 26 points to both Haille Nickerson and Stephanie Pal. Pakenham was up by three points at quarter time and maintained that sort of ascendancy at each break but was challenged throughout the contest.

The following day, the women got up by 25 points against Southern Peninsula.

Although Southern Peninsula are on the bottom of the ladder and the margin seemed comfortable, the women were forced to fight back from a three-point halftime deficit.

A 33-point third term ensured victory, though, and Nickerson was again important on offence with 25 points.

Keeley Patterson scored 18 points and Shannon Patterson collected 16 points and 13 rebounds.

The men also banked an important victory, against the highly-seeded Sherbrooke, winning by five points.

Down by two points at three-quartertime, Pakenham dug in and ran over the top of Sherbrooke.

Pakenham was in front for the majority of the final stanza, but Sherbrooke got up by a point with just over a minute to go, before the Warriors resurrected to come out winners.

Pakenham led by three points with 30 seconds to go and had eight free throws in those dying stages, but made just four of those to make it tense until the final buzzer.

Joe Davis (20 points), Ned Weideman (17 points) and Joshua Dow (16 points) all hit the scoreboard for Pakenham.

The youth league women won its semi-final by five points and will face Wyndham in the final.

The experience of Rhiannon Gallagher, Ebony Sans, Alahna Arnason and Chloe Zielinski – all of whom have played senior basketball this season - shone through as each hit the scoreboard and were influential and consistent throughout the contest.

Down by 12 points at halftime, Pakenham charged home, turning it around thanks to some tight defence and improved offence.
