At the end of Mason Grove in Sassafras, two new art installations have taken flight along the Ridgewalk. When walking up the steep hill — known locally as the Old School track — you’ll be greeted by nine Mayan-inspired path marker birds created Peter Mcilwain and a sculpture of a tawny frogmouth by Renate Crow. Made to breathe new life into the trail as a part of Yarra Ranges Council’s Ridgewalk project, the artists joined the Star Mail in walking the track to view their artistic depictions of birds. Ms Crow and Mr Mcilwain took a different approach from each other in achieving the desired effect, with spectacular results. Read more on page 14
