Lanterns light up Belgrave’s 2022 Lantern Festival kicked off with a resounding welcome after a two-year hiatus on Saturday 25 June, with 10,000 people flocking to the Main Street to celebrate the winter solstice.

Local schools, kindergartens and community groups participated in lantern-making workshops, with some even putting their craft skills to the test at home. Grants and events coordinator for the Bel-

grave Traders Association Jeremy Angerson said a “beautiful, generous, triumphant” spirit returned on the evening of Saturday 25 June. But not long after the event had finished, Billy Crombie, co-owner of Babaji’s Kerala

Kitchen started a petition on change.org calling for more funding to save the festival - with more than 1000 signatures in support. Turn to page 2 for more on this story
