Levelling out playing field GPS levelled paddocks have allowed Chris Cook of “Trenmore”, Meandarra to sow half his wheat crop this year despite receiving record rainfall. In all, 400 millimetres has soaked his black soil brigalow belah country on the Western Downs of Queensland since Christmas, with 288mm falling in the past three months. The annual average there is 600mm. “Anyone who has got country that is levelled has been able to get on to it (to sow),” Mr Cook said. STORY PAGE 2

Showstopper Over 25 years, Jamie Gadsby has refined his routine for preparing show cattle. And, he’s confident he now has the winning formula. As calves are born, he studies their features and makes a mental note as to which ones to watch as they develop. Mr Gadsby said growthto-age was a key indicator for show success, as was thickness through the calves “and that special bit of eye appeal”. During weaning at about 10 months, he earmarks stock selected for public life and increases his interaction with those animals. STORY PAGE 5

Land price peak By Fiona Gowers Queensland farmland prices jumped 31.3 per cent last year, Rural Bank figures show. In its annual Farmland Values report, the farm financiers saw property values accelerate
in 2021 with a near-perfect mix of ingredients combining to drive national demand to record prices. Stronger agricultural commodity prices and another year of favourable seasonal conditions “in most areas” had improved cash flows
and strengthened balance sheets, it found. Add in support from record low interest rates and confidence in the long-term outlook for the agricultural sector and the result was a surge in the buying power of Australian farmers.
In the Sunshine State, southern Queensland drove farmland growth, with the median price per hectare there increasing 26.6pc in 2021 to a record $9434/ha. STORY PAGE 3
