Budget ‘unfair’ to Ross

By Marcus Uhe The perceived injustice to Cardinia counillor Collin Ross over his uncompensated legal fees carried over to the shire’s budget meeting on Monday night.

The budget for 2022-26 passed, despite Cr Carol Ryan calling for division and opposition from she and some of her colleagues, two of whom came in remotely because they have Covid-19.

Mayor Jeff Springfield, Deputy Mayor Tammy Radford and councillors Jack Kowarzik and Brett Owen voted in favor of the budget being adopted, while councillors Ryan, Ross and Kaye Cameron were opposed.

Cr Ryan said she found it difficult to find “equality” within the budget as it did not offer compensation to Cr Ross, following an investigation into his travel expenses.

“Until this budget includes repaying $11,500 for legal fees to Cr Ross incurred during the investigation into his travelling expenses, which included council spending $80,000 in legal fees of ratepayers money and over 100 hours as least of paid managers time, the budget cannot be deemed as fair, due to the inspectors finding of no wrongdoing of Cr Ross,” Cr Ryan said.

Her views were supported by Cr Cameron, who at last week’s council meeting put forward a motion stating “that the council, either through its insurers or as a direct council cost, reimburse Cr Collin Ross…in full for all expenses incurred by him in defending himself against allegations made by council resolution in the term of the previous council, that he had wrongly claimed travel expenses“.

“I concur with Cr Ryan,” Cr Cameron said.

Cardinia Shire Council’s budget for 2022-26 was adopted at Monday 27 June’s council meeting.

”I don’t think this budget is particularly fair and I think there’s adjustments that need to be made for the whole community to make it a fair honest and just budget.”

Cr Ross was demanded to provide council with detailed answers to questions relating to his claims for travel expenses incurring in the

previous four years.

The matter was investigated by the Local Government Inspectorate in late 2020 but found insufficient evidence of a breach of the Local Government Act 1989 or Crimes Act 1958

by Cr Ross.

Key projects identified in the budget for

the $99.49 million Capitals Works program 2022-23 include $3.9 million for the Cardinia Youth Facility building, $10 million for the ‘Sealing the Hills’ program, $16 million for Princes Highway Intersection Upgrade Works, and $3.6 million for the Kooweerup Bowls and Community Pavilion.

The ’Sealing the Hills’ program will be funded through government grants, as will the Princes Highway Intersection works, which will also be supported by developer contributions. $57.78 million of capital expenditure has been committed to asset renewals and upgrades, including roads, bridges and footpaths.

Cr Owen, who acted as temporary chair of the meeting due Mayor Springfield’s inability to attend in person, described the budget as one “that looks after the entire shire”.

“I do think it is a budget that is for all,” Cr Owen said.

“It doesn’t matter where you live in Cardinia Shire, this budget is catering for you.

“I do think it’s fair, it’s gone through a long process and this started back in November/ December.”

Mayor Springfield and Deputy Mayor Radford attended the meeting online due to having to isolate after contracting Covid-19.

“I feel it’s going to be more difficult to try and chair the meeting on-screen and observe everyone, so I’m going to step down and hand it over to the CEO to call for nominations for a temporary chair for the remainder of the meeting,” Mayor Springfield said.

By Matt Male Mexican food chain Guzman Y Gomez will open up a drive-thru restaurant in Pakenham.

Guzman Y Gomez will open mid-year at the intersection of Deveney Street and Princes Highway - next to Hungry Jack’s.

The company’s burritos, nachos and tacos will be welcomed by those currently travelling to Cranbourne or Fountain Gate for their fix.

The company is planning on providing “full training” to staff at its Fountain Gate restaurant, according to a job advertisement for a full-time cook on employment website Seek.

Guzman Y Gomez was founded in 2006 and operates more than 150 restaurants in Australia, Singapore, Japan and the United States. Its goal is to open more than 40 restaurants a year, according to its website.

Tackling financial abuse

By Danielle Galvin The scope of how we view family violence, and what it can entail, is changing in Australia.

An abusive relationship can take many forms - including what’s now being called financial or economic abuse.

According to Women’s Information and Referral Exchange Inc, known as WIRE, financial abuse can include “withholding money, controlling all the household spending or refusing to include you in financial decisions”.

It can happen to anyone, and it is a form of family violence.

WIRE service delivery manager, Jessica Stott, addressed a group of attendees at the Together We Can summit in Pakenham in May. She gave an overview of financial abuse, describing it as a way people can use money to exert power.

It often coincides with other forms of abuse.

Ms Stott explained that it comes down to an imbalance of power, and it can take many forms. It can occur in different relationships not just between couples, but in families, too, between parents and their adult children, siblings and other relatives.

“If there’s a power imbalance it can occur anywhere,” she said.

It’s a form of abuse that can have serious consequences and damaging long-term impacts.

It doesn’t necessarily stop when a relationship ends, or when people separate, she said.

The perpetrator may continue to control family support payments, for example, or rack up fines in their victim’s name.

There’s a common myth that women have “low financial literacy” and therefore their male partner must control the family budget or spending.

It’s a dangerous method of control.

The financial abuse session at the Paken-

ham event was attended by various stakeholders and people working in the broader family violence space.

One issue that was raised at the session was the fact that sometimes the victim finds themselves with no access to money - to the credit cards, accounts or cash. When they want to leave, they may feel immobilised and trapped.

Ms Stott spoke about “asking the money question”. While it can be an uncomfortable topic to broach to talk about financial matters, it’s important to let a loved one know who may be experiencing economic abuse that there is help and support.

She says it’s important to give a victim a chance to speak about their experience without judgement, by giving them “space to open up and reflect on their financial relationships”.

It can help them understand and recognise that what they have experienced is financial abuse.

One attendee at the workshop, who works as a financial counsellor, says she has dealt with victims who seek help, overwhelmed with debts. Often they haven’t realised that the debts they have inherited, the financial control, is abuse.

According to the Australian Banking Association, there is a lot that is being done as banks become more aware of what they describe as a “silent crime”.

Signs of financial abuse In Australia, it’s estimated around 16 per cent of women will experience financial abuse in their lifetime. It can also affect men too.

According to ASIC’s Money Smart website, there are a number of signs of financial abuse: Controlling access to money - whether that’s through restricting access to accounts, cards or cash, making you ask permission to spend, refusing to contribute to shared costs or child support, refusing to provide you with enough money for living expenses/ children

A White Ribbon event and awards ceremony is returning for 2022 with a twist - showcasing a range of different community services.

Local community members are encouraged to bring donations for the services including Trudi’s Angles, Purton Place Pre Loved Shop and Pets of the Homeless which will be accepting toiletry items, kitchen items, clothing and pet products to be donated to family violence victims.

Thanks to a partnership between Cardinia Shire Council and Cleanaway, six charity bins will be placed in the community to act as collection points.

The keynote speaker for the event will be family violence survivor Simone O’Brien who will share her story of strength, determination and survival and her unwavering commitment to remaining positive.

“It started with emotional and psychological abuse, stealing, and insults. It ended with me being beaten with a baseball bat to within inches of my life,“ Simone said.

The 2022 Garry McQuillan and Tony Fitzgerald Awards will also be presented on the day.

The event will be held on Wednesday 20 July at the Outlook Community Centre, 24 Toomuc Valley Road from 1pm to 3pm presented by Outlook, Cardinia Shire Council and Aligned Leisure.

Leading the way to reform

By Eleanor Wilson Despite a rocky start to adulthood, Lyndhurst resident Lyanne Morel has turned her life around - and she wants other young Australians to have the same opportunities.

In 2020, Ms Morel was put in police custody on remand.

She was eventually acquitted of her charges, but said the time she spent in Frankston jail was nothing short of horrifying.

“Being in prison, especially as a first timer who had never really had any interactions with the law, was very scary,” she said.

While Ms Morel only spent one night in jail, she said it was enough to make her push for change.

The 25-year old is part of The Red Robins, a Red Cross-endorsed team who will visit Victorian Parliament on 30 June to present a Bill to Youth Parliament, with hopes it will help reform the juvenile justice system.

The Bill aims to deconstruct the current system of youth detention centres into a series of wellness centres which focus on education and rehabilitation.

“What I really observed while I was in [jail] was that a lot of the women are quite troubled; it’s quite evident they haven’t had the right support,” she said.

“I spoke firsthand to a lot of women in prison and there’s a very large portion of them that have been there before.”

Ms Morel said the Bill aimed to address certain elements the current youth justice system falls short on, particularly keeping minors in education.

“Prison currently operates to punish younger offenders rather than rehabilitate them; it’s a revolving door and becomes a second home to those that don’t receive the help they need,” she said.

The Red Robins’ Bill legislates to close the majority of current youth justice centres and to focus on the introduction of youth wellness centres to the effect that residents are able to continue their education and begin reintegration trips for the purpose of remaining a part of the community.

Currently, the age of criminal responsibility in Australia is 10 years old, meaning from

that age, children can enter the youth justice system, isolating them from society, argued Ms Morel.

The international standard age of criminal responsibility is 14 years old.

“Prison is not the right environment for a 10-year-old,” she said.

“You’ve pulled them away from their family, all their friends and from being in school. It’s like you’ve set them up for failure.

“We want to encourage them to stay on the

right path, we want to give them every chance.”

To develop the proposed legislation, the team of five young Victorians referred to the successful Diagrama Foundation model from Spain, which saw alternative ‘re-education centres’ replace traditional juvenile detention centres in many countries across Europe.

The result saw recidivism rates drop to as low as 14 per cent over a period of years and proved successful in reintegrating juveniles into the community.

After tabling the Bill at Youth Parliament, it will be passed on to the Youth Governor, who will present it to Parliamentarians for further review.

“I’m quite hopeful that someone, a party or an independent will pick this up, because I do think it has incredible potential,” Ms Morel said.

Shopping hit Teenagers from Hallam, Springvale and Narre Warren were arrested after 13 stores were broken into at a Wantirna South shopping complex early on Sunday morning, 26 June.

Knox police arrested the four males after a series of shop burglaries at a shopping centre on Burwood Highway around 1am.

It is alleged the four youths broke into the shopping centre through an area under construction, and once inside, allegedly broke into 13 stores, police said.

A 13-year-old and 14-year-old from Hallam, a 12-year-old from Springvale and a 13-yearold boy from Narre Warren were each charged with 30 offences, burglary, theft, criminal damage and bail offences.

They will face a remand application at a children’s court, police said.

Positivity shining through for youth New research by Mission Australian and Orygen found 69 per cent of young Victorians reported the pandemic had a negative impact on their mental health.

While the brunt of lockdown restrictions may be behind us, youth mental health remains a contentious issue.

To highlight the importance of their mental well being, students at Foundation Centre’s Casey campus held a positivity exhibition on Monday 20 June.

Year 11 students each represented an organisation that supports youth mental health and held a fundraiser, selling homemade cupcakes, cookies, candles, key rings and crocheted dots.

Representing organisations including ReachOut, Beyond Blue, Sane, Sebastian Foundation, Starlight Foundation, Helping Minds and Compassionate Friends, students also decorated the exhibition with bunting printed with personalised mottos for positivity.

“The last two years have seen teen mental ill health skyrocket; at Foundation Learning Centre, we see it firsthand,” said Foundation Learning Centre’s learning and curriculum coordinator and educator Daniella Maloney.

“Our exhibition aimed to reduce the stigma of mental health concerns and give all our students the tools to assist them and encourage

A sunny fix for energy

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Manufacturers in the South East are being encouraged to use solar power to shine a path through Australia’s energy crisis.

Ewen Beard, sales manager from Leading Edge Energy, has been advising South Eastern Melbourne Manufacturers Alliance (SEMMA) members on energy cost savings.

“There’s never a better time to look at reducing usage from the grid by installing solar or other means,” he said.

For now, many firms were protected from the staggering price spikes due to long-term fixed contracts with energy suppliers.

The ones in danger were those coming out of contract, such as an aged care provider whose annual energy costs were set to rise from $333,000 to $840,000.

Mr Beard said solar companies were offering to install panels for free and sell back the power to businesses for less than the market grid price.

Offering such a plan is Hallam-based United Solar Energy, which has received 50 expressions-of-interest from businesses in the past two weeks.

United chief executive Richard Vargas said the plan helped businesses which found the upfront cost for solar was “out of financial reach”.

“Many businesses are viewing this as a costsaving opportunity.

“It allows businesses to commit to a low energy rate which they can be confident is green energy as it’s the solar panels are on their own roof.

“At the end of the agreed term the panel asset than becomes the company asset.”

The plan was tailored to businesses with $500-plus electricity bills and consuming most of their energy during daylight hours.

Meanwhile, Mr Beard said the high grid prices were due to coal-generated electricity supply “falling off the cliff”.

Some of that was due to flooding of coal mines and supply rail.

This combined with skyrocketing international prices for coal due to sanctions imposed

Mr Beard said more renewable sources “on the grid” were required.

But the previous Federal Government policy hindered renewables by “twiddling their thumbs” and “propping up coal generators”.

“We have to still have coal in the grid for the foreseeable future.”

SEMMA chief executive Vonda Fenwick represents manufacturers who employ 16,000 workers and generate $3 billion for the economy.

At the moment, less than a fifth of members were reporting an immediate impact from higher energy bills.

Some of those electricity hikes were as steep as 85 per cent.

“Some are being hit immediately, some have contracts to protect them at the moment,” Ms Fenwick said.

“It’s a question of how long these conditions take to resolve. There’s no easy answers.”

It reached 30,000-plus people in multiple languages across digital channels, SECL chief executive Peter McNamara said.

The next project will tackle the longerterm impacts of the pandemic and lockdowns.

“In SECL’s work with young people, we have also observed declining states of mental health and wellbeing,” Mr McNamara said..

“In particular, social connectedness, sleep and physical activity have declined leading to adverse impacts on family relationships, education and health among some youth.”

The series will promote social connections, healthy behaviours and “hope for a brighter future”.

In March, Mr McNamara said there was a “huge gap” in culturally-appropriate health education and vaccination services.

The project was funded as part of the State Government’s Multicultural Communications Outreach Program, which promotes Covid-safe behaviour and recovery in multicultural communities.

“Multicultural media outlets have played a vital role ensuring everyone knows how to play their part in keeping the community safe,” Multicultural Affairs Minister Ros Spence said.

“It’s a big job – and I can’t thank them enough.”

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

I have visited 15 countries.

What do you love about what you do?

As a Girl Guide leader, I love seeing when the girls discover and work out something they didn’t know before. You can just see their eyes light up as they do it and it always reminds me why I volunteer.

Who is the best person you’ve worked with?

Deb Chamberlain. She is my idol and I aspire to be a Guide leader with the integrity, dedication and passion that she possesses.

What would your last meal be?

Pancakes with every topping I could possibly imagine.

What is your most memorable moment?

Walking after two months in a wheelchair. I had been in wheelchairs when I was younger but it was the first time I was actually old even to understand the significance and achievement of recovering from surgery. That was following my last surgery for hip dysplasia in 2016.

What event, past or present, would you like to witness?

I would love to see the women suffragette movement in the 1910s. Emmeline Pankhurst is one of my biggest inspirations and being able to actually see everything her organisation did, especially with the knowledge of how it impacted my rights now, would be incredible.

Which three guests, dead or alive, would you invite to dinner?

Dolly Parton, Freddie Mercury and Marlene Dietrich.

What are you currently listening to, watching or reading?

I just finished reading ‘The Secret History’ by Donna Tartt. It was incredible and should definitely be on lists of books people should read before they die.

I would love to travel to Egypt. Nine-year old me had an absolute obsession with ancient Egypt and its mythology, so being able to see the pyramids in real life.

What were you like as a kid?

Loud and determined. I have always been independent and wanted to take any opportu-

Students taste workforce

By Tess Gilbert* Students from across the state have been preparing for work experience during the last week of Term 2, from 20 June to 25 June 2022, to give them insight into future career paths.

Students from Pakenham Secondary College spoke to the Star News Group about their experience undertaking a week of work placement, and how it has changed their outlook on their future careers.

The program was put in place to give Year 10 students the opportunity to figure out what they may want to do in the future, and how that insight can help them decide on subjects and coursework in the preceding years.

Two students from Pakenham Secondary College spent the week trialling workforces relating to manufacturing and retail.

“It’s been really great. I’ve had people be supportive and help me when I’ve had issues,” said Pakenham Secondary College student Daniel Brown.

“I chose Bunnings because everyone seemed so nice and were willing to help and take my work experience application in.”

The students said the experience has been really helpful in regards to gaining experience and insight into what their future careers may be.

“It’s been really helpful to develop an understanding of the career path I have chosen to trial,” said Holly Falkingham, a Pakenham Secondary College student working for her uncle’s blind company.

“It’s helped provide me with a realistic insight into the working world,” she said.

Students participated in a range of activities for their week of work experience.

Many students, however, found it difficult to find work experience placement.

According to Holly, her uncle’s small business was not her first choice when searching for job placements.

“After contacting multiple dental clinics and doctor offices, with no luck, I opted to seek out work placement at my uncle’s small business,” she said.

Students were told to make note of the work environment and spend the week observing

the job of their choice and the responsibilities it entailed.

Afterwards, the Pakenham Secondary College students completed a workbook regarding the workforce they chose, and specifically the work environment they were in.

Students said they were unsure of the program at first, but understood what they hoped to get out of it.

“I was hoping to earn some life skills and learn how real work is once I leave

The change from school to the work environment was shocking for some, given the difference in structure and environment.

“I have found that the expectations are different,” said Holly.

Pakenham music school inspires the creative souls

By Tess Gilbert Since recruiting a new manager in late 2018, growing musical community Creative Souls Studio Pakenham has gone from strength to strength in its bid to educate local students with an interest in music.

The music school provides private lessons for a range of musical instruments, including voice, drums, guitar, piano and most recently, woodwind.

Despite the challenges faced with running a business during Covid-19 times, the music school still managed to maintain a positive, inclusive, and family friendly company.

Mary, the studio manager of Creative Souls Pakenham said she has hopes for the company to continue growing with both its students and teachers.

She’s in the process of introducing a woodwind teacher to expand the capabilities of the business.

“We are very excited to introduce woodwind, and our teacher is able to teach all woodwind instruments,” Mary said.

However It was not without hard work

from all the staff that the company thrived, even during hard times.

“If it hadn’t been for their amazing efforts the studio would not have survived,” she said.

Adapting to use new technologies allowed the studio to continue running when teachers were unable to see their students due to Covid restrictions.

“Each time we had a lockdown the teachers took it in their stride and worked tirelessly to offer the online lesson format, and though it wasn’t always easy and extremely tiring for them, they never complained and made sure the students had the best lessons possible,” Mary said.

The goal of the studio has always been to create a safe space where people can explore their love for music in depth, Mary said.

The founder of the business, Jennifer Kerr, had a vision to create a positive, inclusive and safe space for students of all ages to learn to sing.

Shortly after Ms Kerr moved to Port Douglas in 2018, Mary was asked to take on a larger role in the company.

“Jenn asked me if I would consider running the administration side of the business,” she said.

“I took up this role at the beginning of 2019 and during that year brought on new teachers and instruments.”

Since that time the studio has been working hard to create a musical community.

All the members of staff are passionate about music and care about their students, Mary said.

“The favourite part of my day is watching our amazing teachers bring out the best in their students,” she said.

The team focus is on building the confidence of students studying music, no matter the skill level.

“We love to take them out to local events and I am very proud that we focus on giving them the opportunity to perform in public no matter what level they are at,” Mary said.

The studio manager said she has many coming plans for the future of the business, although they are in the planning stages and haven’t been implemented as of yet.

The music school offers a range of lessons for instruments such as piano, drums and singing.

Mr Grossek, who has been principal of the school since it opened in 1990, was recognised for 55 years of service last week.

He was one of 22 government school and education staff from Eastern Victoria paid tribute to through the Recognition of Service to Victorian Education program.

“It was great to feel acknowledged in that way. It’s also very humbling because there’s a lot of people who have done wonderful things in the education sector, so to be honored among them is very special,” Mr Grossek said.

He said his 33 years and counting at Berwick Lodge were owed to a drive to continue reinventing the ways things were done at the primary school.

“Spending a long time in one place, you can do an awful lot, as long as you keep reinventing yourself and moving with the times,” he said.

“That’s something I’ve always been very conscious of…and between the confidence of the school community and the education department, the school has grown and I have grown and that’s been a real win-win for everyone.”

Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing paid tribute to the 22 government school and education staff from the Eastern Victorian region.

“Our public education staff are extraordinary – they work hard, change lives, and make Victoria a better place for everyone,” she said.

“My congratulations and gratitude to all the recipients for their tireless dedication and hard work, for the profound difference they’ve made in the lives of so many, and for their service to students and families over so many decades.”

Davis the indestructible

By David Nagel Pakenham’s title-contending Division Two Men’s team has returned home from one of the longest road-trips in the state with a 78-71 victory over Mildura.

Saturday night’s clash at the Mildura Hothouse saw the Warriors produce a stunning brand of basketball in the second quarter, scoring 28 to 17, before being pegged back in the third by a home team supported by a parochial home crowd.

The Warriors have now won four-consecutive games and, with a 13-4 record, sit second on the table behind competition newcomers Gippsland United.

The Warriors can thank Canadian-import Joe Davis for the weekend’s victory, with the star centre scoring a show-stopping 38 points and backing that up with 12 rebounds, including nine at the defensive end of the court.

Alistair Parker was not far behind Davis in his level of importance, with a 17-point, 10-rebound, double-double, helping to stave off the Heat’s late charge.

Ned Weideman and Trent Lee were also stalwarts of the victory, while four assists from Nathan Dodgson were valuable coming off the bench.

The Warriors will look to keep the pressure applied to Gippsland when Rob Roberts and his team head to Mornington on Saturday night for an important clash against the fourth-placed team in the competition.

The recent struggles of Pakenham’s Big V Championship Women’s team continued on Saturday night with the Warriors going down 84-66 to McKinnon.

The Warriors have now lost six-straight games since last saluting the judge against Southern Peninsula on 21 May. The Warriors were very competitive in the first half, trailing by one point at quarter time and by just two points as the teams headed into the second half.

But that two-point deficit suddenly exploded after half time with McKinnon imposing itself on the contest.

The Warriors slipped eight points behind at the final break before a disappointing final term.

Highlights for the Warriors were 16 points off the bench from Ebony Sans, and a doubledouble (14 points, 14 rebounds) from Anastasia Williams that kept Pakenham in the hunt until things turned against them in the third.

Import Haille Nickerson was next best for the Warriors, scoring 11 points for the evening.

The Warriors women will put a 5-10 record on the line when the team heads to Bulleen on Saturday night to take on the second-placed Boomers.

Pakenham’s Youth League One Women’s team fared much better in a weekend doubleheader, coming away with two tight and exciting victories.

Tylah Scorah and Christine Stiglich both scored 15 points in the Warriors come-frombehind 72-69 victory over Geelong United on Saturday, before repeating the dose against Wyndham on Sunday.

The Warriors trailed Wyndham 45-33 at the final break but rattled in 29 points to 13 in the last quarter to race away with victory.

Rhiannon Gallagher played a key role in the 62-58 triumph, scoring 16 points, while Ebony Sans and Chloe Zielinski crashed the boards with a dozen rebounds each.

The Youth League girls host Sherbrooke on Saturday night before a Sunday high-noon road trip to Geelong.

And a magnificent 39 points from Michael Johns has led the Youth League Two Men’s team to a dominant 108-67 win over Mornington.

Johns was untouchable, hitting eight from 16 outside the arc to lead his side to its fourth win on the trot.

The top-of-the-table Warriors host Chelsea on Saturday night at 8pm.

Lightning strikes again for Moody and Ramsey team

By David Nagel Pakenham trainer Peter Moody and owner-breeder Stuart Ramsey have enjoyed Group-1 success before and look set for another enjoyable journey after Chain of Lightning made a huge impression at Caulfield on Saturday.

At her first start for Moody on the weekend, the Fighting Sun/Magic Art filly toyed with her opposition to score an emphatic victory in the $130,000 Three-Year-Old Fillies Open Handicap (1200m).

Chain of Lightning made her way to Pakenham via country New South Wales, where she maintained an unbeaten two-start career under Armidale trainer Stirling Osland.

A winning debut at Inverell, on New Year’s Day this year, was followed by a Class-2 victory at Armidale on January 24.

Chain of Lightning had obviously shown ability, but a move to the Moody yard could see her go on to reach her full potential.

She still has a long way to go to reach the heights of Ancient Song, Cinque Cento and Sky Cuddle – Group-1 winners for the Moody/Ramsey team – but winning her first three starts certainly has her on the right road to stardom.

Jockey Blaike McDougall took full advantage of a strong spring from the gates, taking Chain of Lightning to the front and was never headed.

McDougall released the brakes in the straight to give the talented filly her debut Melbourne victory.

Moody’s assistant Katherine Coleman was surprised by the ease of the two-length victory.

“She was quite dominant there, which surprised us, but she’s trialled up really well,” Coleman said post-race.

“All we have to do is get them going the Melbourne way and put a little bit of polish on them.

“She was able to come here and do that, so it’s a credit to them.

“Her jump outs have been really nice, her gallops have been good and she’s been able

to work with some of our fillies and give us a guide that she was ready to come here today and be competitive.”

Coleman said it was great to see the best of the filly on a soft track, that was presented in immaculate condition.

“Obviously it’s a difficult time of year trying to get tracks that suit them so I think we’ve been very lucky today that the track is in beautiful order and they’ve done a great

job of presenting it the way it is,” she said.

McDougall raised his eyebrows when asked about the victory after the race.

“She was brilliant wasn’t she, she was never going to get beat after a furlong,” he said.

“We didn’t think she would be that close but she began so well, relaxed nicely in front and had a bit of a breather and then kicked strong.”

Chain of Lightning won by two lengths on the line from the Ciaron Maher/ David Eustace-trained She’s All Class.

Harsh reality hits Lions

By Tyler Lewis Pakenham has been dealt a dose of reality in Outer East Premier Division Football after being handled easily by ladder-leaders Narre Warren at Toomuc Reserve on Saturday.

The Lions were the latest to go in with high hopes against the Magpies, but after visiting skipper Trent Cody won the toss and elected to kick with the wind…the clash was all but over.

The Pies rattled home six goals in the opening term, while keeping the Lions scoreless.

The second term saw the contest step up a notch, not only physically, but also on the scoreboard, as Pakenham converted four goals.

In fact, the Lions would’ve won the term if it wasn’t for a neat Peter Gentile goal after the half-time siren.

The Pies won the third term three goals to one, before putting the foot on the throat in the last – firing off seven goals to two against what breeze was left.

While realistically all games – including Saturday’s – have been decided before threequarter-time, it appears the Pies are getting a kick out of demolishing sides.

Their 20.12.132 to 7.2.44 victory came despite an aggressive four quarters of football.

There would be a few stretched footy jumpers after the clash between the Lions and the Pies, after scuffles were a theme of the game.

Magpies Tommy Miller was consistently letting Lion Jordy Stewart know how his side was going, before Stewart’s teammates were quick to fly the flag.

Star midfielder Kurt Mutimer admitted he enjoys playing in the fiery contests with Paken-

ham, while also revealing his undefeated side played their best footy only on Saturday.

“It’s always fiery when you play Pakenham,” he said.

“They’re a young team, but it showed on Saturday, they brought the niggle for four quarters.

“We enjoy beating them, but it’s always a good contest between us and Pakky – it’s always feisty.

“We’re 9-0 now after the win on the weekend, it’s probably the best win we’ve had so far this year, we put together a four-quarter performance and we want to continue playing four quarters of footy and bringing that love and care for each other on the ground.”

The Magpies face two of its fiercest challengers in the next fortnight ahead of the bye, with Monbulk at home before Wandin on the road.

The Lions will look to bounce back against local-rival Officer at Toomuc Reserve this Saturday.

Mad phenomenon opens Wendy’s winter wonderland

By David Nagel For Wendy Errington and local football…it was love at first sight!

New to the town of Garfield in 1990, Errington trudged along to her first grand final in 1993 to watch her home-town team demolish ROC in a one-sided contest at Cora Lynn.

She was captivated, instantly smitten… but not so much by what was taking place on the ground.

“I went with a few friends who were into their football and discovered this mad phenomenon that I never knew existed,” Errington said, still with amazing passion.

“I didn’t know anything about local footy at all, but I went to the 1993 grand final and it was the most amazing thing I’d ever seen…it was absolute madness.

“Women were turning up all dressed up in limousines, having champagne breakfasts, everyone was so passionate about their clubs and I’d never seen anything like it in my life.

“Even on the Sunday the town was full of intoxicated footballers roaming the streets with a white goat or white Shetland pony, I can’t remember exactly, but it was just incredible.”

For Errington it was a case of ‘Where do I sign up.’

“We lived across the road from the Garfield footy club and I first got involved doing some little things, but then quickly became secretary because I’m a bit of a bossy boots and like to organise things,” she said honestly with a laugh.

“Then I got involved with office admin, league data, that sort of stuff.

“But then I realised there is so much more to running a football club…it’s incredible really.

“One day I counted and it took 63 people to put four teams onto the ground, and that’s not including the players.

“The timekeepers, the goal umpires, the water boys, the canteen, there’s an incredible machine that works behind the scenes at all clubs.”

Like all volunteers…Errington’s portfolio has continued to transform and grow.

Wendy Errington fell in love with the Garfield Football Club in 1993 and has been smitten ever since. 280903 impossible to describe,” she said.

“There’s everything from washing the umpires’ bathmats, providing them with soap, washing white shirts, pink shirts, red shirts, red jackets, blue t-shirts, pink t-shirts… it never ends.

“And on game days I like to call myself the Office Manager.

“I stay in the office and fix problems as they come in.

“No umpires, no flags, lost boots, shorts are falling down, footballs need pumping up, there’s a bit of everything that goes on really.”

One thing that did catch Errington’s eye – on grand final day, 29 years ago – was the colourful entrance of the players.

“The banners, I love making the banners, that’s been a highlight for me,” she said.

“We used a huge amount of silver-foil to

make premiership cups for the banners and we had woven banners which would take 10 or 15 people to put together.

“They were massive, really heavy, and really labour intensive to make.

“Peter Bogart and I were the two main banner makers and I even had a banner book so I didn’t repeat the same words over and over again,” she says with a laugh.

“And I also love our trophy cabinet…it’s like a museum of the Garfield Football Club.

“That’s my little baby…I’ll always do that even when I hand over the other stuff.”

Errington has a soft spot for players like Gary Vitiritti and Murray Payne, from the ‘93/’94 premiership teams, but rates Lincoln Withers and Andy Soumilas as the silkiest players she has seen.

he had some real magic,” she said, before explaining why she continues to volunteer for the 28th year running.

“If it’s Saturday in winter, it’s footy, I love it and missed it so much through Covid.

“I love the stories, the history of it all, the family connections that have been around for so long and made this club so great.

“I love the friendships, like those I have with Judy Bishop and Melva Bonham and so many others throughout the journey…. this is my extended family.

“And being at the footy club keeps me young, keeps me involved with younger people and I love that aspect as well.

“Little kids, enthusiastic teenagers, young men and women, I love the social contact that I otherwise wouldn’t have now that I’m retired.

“For me it’s all about the people, and I think a lot of volunteers would say that.”
