By Parker McKenzie 12 years after the demolition of its resource centre, Knox Historical Societies is still waiting for a new facility to be built.

The land at 1-3 Olivebank Road, Ferntree Gully — including the still-standing historic Ambleside Homestead — was donated to the council by Oliver David in the 1970s, under the proviso it wouldn’t be subdivided and was used for the preservation of Knox history under the auspice of the Historical Society.

With their temporary facilities not fit for purpose, members of the late Mr David’s family and volunteers from the Knox Historical Society are calling on Knox City Council to commit to a three-year plan to ensure the facility is finally delivered.

Merlino to retire Monbulk MP James Merlino has resigned as Deputy Premier, Minister for Education and Minister for Mental Health and won’t contest his electorate in the November state election.

Mr Merlino announced he had advised Premier Daniel Andrews of the decision on Friday 24 June. In a statement, Mr Merlino said his 20year journey is coming to an end.

“It has been an honour and a privilege to serve in the Victorian Parliament and represent my community of Monbulk,” he said.

“I leave with feelings of deepest gratitude, a little sadness and excitement for the future.”

Mr Merlino was first elected to government in 2002 and briefly served as acting premier when Dan Andrews was injured in March 2021.

He thanked Mr Andrews and said he was a

leader of courage, determination, intellect and kindness.

Mr Andrews said in a statement Victoria has never had a better acting premier.

“In 2021, James seamlessly took over chairing the Cabinet and leading the Government at a difficult time for our state and a tough time for me and my family,” he said.

“I will forever be grateful for his care and

concern but moreover, his competence, allowing me to focus on recovering from very serious injuries, confident, indeed certain, that the state was in the best of hands.”

Mr Andrews said he has asked Mr Merlino to stay on in the role as campaign chair, a role he unofficially filled over the last two election campaigns “and I am grateful he has accepted.”

Four Vic ministers resign Several senior Victorian Government ministers have announced they are resigning from their positions in Cabinet effective immediately. They will remain in Parliament until the November election.

Deputy Premier of Victoria, Minister for Education and Minister for Mental Health James Merlino, Minister for Health, Ambulance Services and Equality Martin Foley, Minister for Police and Water Lisa Neville and Minister for Industry Support and Recovery, Trade, Business Precincts, Sport, Tourism and Major Events and Racing Martin Pakula are the resigning members.

Mr Merlino said renewal is critical for any government.

“Fresh ideas and new energy. As hard as this is, I believe in my heart that renewal, new cabinet ministers around the table, is the best thing for the Government and our state,” he said.

“I know how much capacity and talent there is in our team. I look forward to supporting the new ministers for Education and Mental Health.”

“Thank you and farewell.”

The announcement of the new Cabinet team next week will mark the replacement of the outgoing ministers.

Mr Foley said the past two years have been a tough time for all Victorians.

“Many of us have come to reflect on what we aspire to achieve. I am no different. I am looking forward to contributing to a better, fairer, sustainable Victoria in a different capacity,” he said.

“One that allows me more time to focus on my family and wellbeing and different interests.”

Minister for Planning and Housing Richard Wynne also announced his retirement from politics as of the November election in late 2021.

Ms Neville said she is not finished with public service.

“While it is no longer sustainable from a health perspective for me to commit to being Minister and local member for the next term, I am not finished with public service and look forward to finding other ways to continue to contribute to public life after the election in November,” she said.

Ms Neville was hospitalised after a longrunning fight with Crohn’s disease, which was a contributing factor to her retirement.

He thanked the other premiers he has served under — Steve Bracks and John Brumby — and his staff who have supported

him throughout his time as a member of parliament.

“Thank you for helping me look after the beautiful and unique electorate of Monbulk,” Mr Merlino said.

“I live in and love the hills, I very much look forward to spending the rest of this term continuing to serve the people of Monbulk.”

Finally, Mr Merlino thanked his family and his wife Meagan for their support.

“We’ve never known anything other than

politics as a family. It has an impact in big and small ways – family events, local sport and children’s milestones missed – and even when you are there, there are many times when you’re not truly present,” he said.

“Politics undoubtedly puts a greater burden on your partner than should ever be the case.” Mr Merlino will see out the remainder of his term as Monbulk MP before the 26 November state election, where Labor will nominate a new candidate to take his place.

By Eleanor Wilson Victoria Police is appealing for witnesses to come forward after an attempted abduction of a 36-year-old woman on Saturday afternoon.

At a press conference on Tuesday 21 June Casey Crime Investigations Unit Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Luke Shore said The Dandenong North woman parked her vehicle at the Churchill Park car park, at Arthur G Robinson Bushland Reserve at Lysterfield Lake.

Investigators established the woman was wearing headphones and walking east along the North Boundary Track, prior to Stonemasons Track around 4:15pm when she was grabbed from behind.

The man grabbed her around the waist and put a hand over her mouth, attempting to drag her to the ground, Sergeant Shore said.

The woman was able to break free from the man’s grasp, before running back to her car and calling emergency services, police say.

Sergeant Shore said there was no indication the man attempted to follow her after she broke free from him.

Investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or was in the vicinity at that time who may have noticed any suspicious vehicles or suspicious activities or alternatively any persons matching that description to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Sergeant Shore said police are treating the attempted abduction as an isolated incident.

Adult store burglary A 32-year-old man has been arrested after an alleged burglary at an adult store on Monday 20 June.

Lilydale Crime Scene services discovered forensic material at the point of entry and found CCTV footage of a vehicle arousing suspicion.

A search warrant was obtained on Wednesday 22 June for an address in Ferntree Gully where police collected more evidence.

“Whilst feeling a bit shafted about being caught, a 32-year-old male was arrested and conveyed to Lilydale Police Station where he was charged,” police said.

“The male will face the Ringwood Magistrates Court on the 17 November 2022.”

“It is concerning to us. That part of the world is one of the nicest parts of our police service area and a lot of people regularly use that for recreational activities including walking, jogging and cycling,” Sergeant Shore said.

“I think any member of the public has the right to feel safe in that area anytime of the day, to go about their leisurely exercise on the weekend.”

Important reforms to bolster the work of Victoria Police and aim at keeping the Victorian community safe have been introduced to the Victorian Parliament.

The Justice Legislation Amendment (Police and Other Matters) Bill 2022 delivers changes to assist police in effectively undertaking their day-to-day operations and continue to deliver the expected services to the community.

This legislation will grant police new powers to protect the security of police premises.

This involves allowing officers to remove people from premises, including police stations, that do not have a legitimate reason to be there or pose a threat to the peace.

This is different from current laws which only permit officers to remove people that have committed an offence.

Fire Brigade services are reminding drivers to drive to the road, and conditions, after a single car accident on Macclesfield Road on Tuesday 21 June.

A CFA spokesperson told the Star Mail it was notified to reports of an accident at 11:11am, with CFA trucks and crews from Yellingbo and Macclesfield Fire Brigades responding along with Victoria Police and Yarra Ranges Council.

“The incident was declared under control at 11:50, with crews remaining on scene some time after to maintain safety,” the spokesperson said.

Macclesfield Fire Briagde Captain Sharon Merritt said the crew responds to a lot of car accidents on Macclesfield Road during Winter.

“It’s a fairly narrow, windy road with a reasonably fast speed limit, so sometimes people take the bends too fast,” Sharon said.

“Lack of concentration is often another issue; people are looking at their phones, and suddenly they’ve got a bend in front of them

in front of you.”

This comes after Yarra Ranges Council puts together an application for the 2022 Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Local Government Grant Program aiming to reduce death and serious injury in pedestrians and cyclists.

“Generally winters tend to get more car accidents; speed with the wet weather and lack of concentration are usually the major problems,” Sharon said.

“Macclesfield Road is so windy and narrow and sometimes people [cut corners] on bends and then they end up on the wrong side of the road and someone coming the other way… they’ve clipped cars coming the other way because they cut the corners going around the bends.”

Over the winter months, Macclesfield Fire Brigade is mostly called out to large animal rescues for horses and cows, alongside road accidents.

“Pay attention and drive to the conditions you don’t have to do the speed limits if it’s raining,” the brigade captain said.

The Victorian State Government has awarded Burrinja Cultural Centre $147,000 to complete the dehumidification of its gallery spaces through the regional collections access program.

The funding was awarded to allow Burrinja to display more of their Aboriginal and Pacific Island art and artefacts and “increasing loans from state and national institutions.”

Burrinja Cultural Centre was established in 1998 offering locals and visitors access to Dandenong Ranges arts, cultural and environmental experiences.

The Centre is located at Wurundjeri Country, 351 Glenfern Road Upwey.

Building plans in limbo

Today, the Knox Historical Society is still functioning out of temporary facilities not fit for purpose, with inaccessible entrances to key historical documents and bathrooms.

Knox Historical Society President Lynn Brewster said it was frustrating to see little action by the council in ensuring the facilities were suitable for the public and the volunteers who run the society.

“It is very much an issue and you can’t have volunteers in wheelchairs, because at the moment we haven’t got the facilities to other facilities for them to use,” she said.

“We want to be inclusive, open up to anybody that wants to come up here and that can’t happen at the moment. Most of our volunteers are elderly.”

The Historical Society has now run out of room to store rows of bound and sorted documents in their climate-controlled temporary resource centre — which they call the TARDIS— with volunteers worrying they may become trapped inside the building because of a door that often doesn’t open from the inside, leaving them no choice but to leave it ajar at all times and threatening the integrity the historic information contained within.

Volunteers have also been forced to place bubble wrap on windows to protect themselves from the elements in the temporary office and the bathroom accessible for disabled

The Historical Society made a submission to a council budget meeting on Thursday 16 June, asking for action and funding for the development and delivery of the resource centre.

Mr Fevreau supported the submission in person and wrote to the council about his family’s disappointment in the lack of progress after more than 10 years.

“The temporary arrangements are an insult to these hard-working volunteers and certainly not in keeping with the intent of the gift by my Grandfather.” he said in the letter.

In a statement in response to questions regarding when Knox City Council estimates when the resource centre would be built and why the facilities haven’t been delivered despite being demolished 12 years ago, Knox City Council said “the 2022-23 Budget is due for consideration to be adopted at the Council meeting on June 27.”

“This includes the consideration to include $45,000 to confirm the operational needs at Ambleside Resource Centre, including development of concept plans, associated feasibility report and cost plan.” the council said.

Ms Brewster said while she welcomes the potential commitment to the funding, there have been several false starts previously and she wants the council to commit to a three-year plan to ensure the facility is delivered.

“We want a proper area for volunteers to work in. We can’t have the general public come into the TARDIS for safety reasons,” she said.

“Will the resource centre ever happen? It hasn’t happened yet and we hoping it will soon.”

Knox City Council previously adopted an Ambleside Masterplan in May 2010 and in 2016 spent $20,000 designing a replacement resource centre without consulting the Knox Historical Society. Aside from the demolition of the previous resource centre, no further work has been completed to deliver the facility.

Honouring Chas’ legacy

By Parker McKenzie On Saturday 25 June, Ambulance Victoria farewelled and celebrated the life of Chas Martin OAM, in honour of his long service and impact on the organisation.

Mr Martin, born on 28 March 1938 in Hamilton, was a part of Ambulance Victoria for 60 years after joining in 1962 as an ambulance officer. He served the community of the eastern suburbs of Melbourne within the Ringwood and Ferntree Gully branches before transferring into the communications division, where he worked for 20 years.

Finally, he moved to the non-emergency ambulance transport at Lilydale, where he remained until he retired in 2003 after 41 years of service with Ambulance Victoria.

Ambulance Victoria Operation Fleet and Equipment manager Liz Punton said people saw Mr Martin as a leader.

“He was able to achieve what he did with the support of his wife Marg,” she said.

“He was dedicated to what he did. He loved it and he was a very hard worker.”

Ambulance Victoria extended condolences to Mr Martin’s wife Marg, son Brian, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for their loss.

Retirement wasn’t the end of his service with Ambulance Victoria, with Mr Martin devoting his time to the newly formed Retired Ambulance Association of Victoria as its president. He also assumed the role of welfare officer for retired officers and their families, offering them support and compassion.

Mr Martin established the Ambulance Museum at 55 Barry Street, Bayswater and was its honorary curator and manager from 2005 until

At the museum, Mr Martin obtained and oversaw the restoration of a fleet of 24 vintage ambulances to display alongside memorabilia and history from the branches throughout Victoria. Many of the vintage ambulances were on display during the cortege at his farewell. He also founded the Ambulance Historical Society in 1986.

Ms Punton said she was fortunate to work for Mr Martin in the museum team.

“It will be a big loss to the team at the museum because people loved to work with him, but they like to work for him as well,” she said.

“I gravitated towards him, he just got people on board. He could always make you laugh.”

Knox City Council hosts drop in session for The Triangle

By Parker McKenzie Residents in The Basin met with Knox City Council workers to have their say on a proposed master plan for The Basin Triangle.

On Friday 24 June, Knox Council hosted the first of two pop-up sessions, allowing the local community to critique the recently published plans to overhaul the community space.

Most of the feedback towards the plan took aim at the positioning of car parking and the moving of a loved playground area.

“The general feeding of the meeting is we are happy the way it is, the biggest issue is the parking,” one local resident said.

“They are trying to move the traffic lights to right in front of the hairdressers.”

On a nearby suggestion board, residents left their feedback on post-it notes, with many stating more car parking would be required.

The Basin Triangle is “located at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges and is the heart of The Basin Shopping precinct,” according to Knox City Council.

In regards to the playground, Knox City Council said the plan proposes a new naturebased playground be built in the future.

“This new playground would be located to the north of the park, enlarging the existing lawn area for events and community use,” council said.

“We are keen to hear if this is something that the community would support. The playspace would only be relocated in the future if the community supported this proposal.”

One resident commended Knox City Council for hosting the drop-in session and thanked them for their patience in listening to feedback.

“I feel like they are really trying to listen, it was really worthwhile,” she said.

“We like the country feel here, we wouldn’t want them to change it into somemailcommunity.com.au

CFA looks back at storms

By Tyler Wright Kalorama and Mount Dandenong Fire Brigade held their first open day since 2019 on Sunday 19 June, just over one year since the June storm event which saw CFA members on the ground for several weeks.

With Bell Real Estate providing free coffee and hot drinks to residents and local traders serving cakes and a sausage sizzle for all - around 200 community members gathered at the station on the corner of Ridge Road and Falls Road to exchange words and actions of appreciation and gratitude.

“We haven’t been able to have an open day because of the fact we were in a Covid response at the time,” Kalorama and Mount Dandenong CFA Captain Bill Robinson said.

“We’ve had to wear masks in the station and in the trucks when we were together…it was only a month ago we came out of it,” Bill said.

Just two days after the June event, the Kalorama and Mount Dandenong brigade received help from Dandenong Ranges and Knox Group firefighters, who were joined by those even further out, with Bill telling other brigade captains he needed “bodies on the ground”.

“I need[ed] to be able to do a door knock of the whole area - find out who is in there because we didn’t even know if anybody was still trapped in the houses; we didn’t have communications. We didn’t have phones. We didn’t have NBN,” Bill said.

“Every night for the first four nights we fed approximately 200 people out of our station… we started initially with food that was given to us from the local IGA and then the Salvos and Red Cross got involved and we got pre-cooked meals from them.

“For the next three weeks, until we got the power back on properly, we were going out and providing fuel to some residents, starting their generators, providing wood, one of the guys who came up off the hill (whose name was David), he was providing Red Gum firewood to us and we were taking it to residents’ places on a daily basis so the could stay warm and be comfortable, and we were delivering Salvation Army meals to them as well in the evenings because some people didn’t have heating.”

The community spirit was not just felt within the locality with many significant donations, but further out - with Marysville residents gathering $2,000 and two whopping sums of $20,000 and $50,000 coming from individuals wanting to contribute to the brigade’s volunteer work.

Bill said after sharing hopes of upgrading the station’s lighting and toilets and installing automatic doors, donors George and Kaylen were quick to act generously.

Kalorama and Mount Dandenong Fire Brigade Community Relations Officer Chris Gibby said captains and brigade representatives from as far as Scoresby and Boronia attended the meeting in recognition of their work clearing trees from roads and driveways and welfare checks on Kalorama homes last year.

“People [had] amazing stories about how the support they received and how they helped others…there was a slideshow going on in the fire station of debris, damage and people,” Chris said.

Millions for mental health support in primary schools A major State Government package will include millions of dollars invested into delivering mental health programs for Victorian Primary schools.

The $200 million investment will see the expansion of the successful ‘Mental Health in Primary Schools’ program to every single government and low-fee non-government primary school in Victoria.

This equates to 1800 school campuses which will be scaling up across the state from 2023.

By 2026 every school will employ a Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader to implement a whole-school approach to wellbeing.

Minister for Mental Health and Education James Merlino said by supporting mental health in the younger years will better their chances of a healthy and happy adulthood.

“I am so proud to introduce today’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Bill to Parliament – this is a historic moment in building our new mental health system, and one that will make a profound change to the way we support Victorians for generations to come,” he said.

“We’re making sure every Victorian child has access to safe, tailored care through their trusted school environment – giving them the care they need, when they need it, close to home,” he said.

The program builds on a successful pilot with 100 schools across Victoria in partnership with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute and the University of Melbourne, where more than 95 per cent of Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders said the model improved their school’s capacity to support students’ mental health and wellbeing needs.

The State Government has announced a $200 million package to get mental health support in all primary schools.

Picture: UNSPLASH This will support individual students, help teachers better identify and support at-risk students, and build relationships and referral pathways to local mental health services.

Since the start of the trials students have improved mental health and wellbeing, as well as improved social, academic and vocational outcomes.

The Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System highlighted that schools play an important role in identifying children with mental health and wellbeing challenges who can then be referred to treat-

ment, care and support if needed.

The Labor Government has already delivered mental health workers in every government secondary and specialist school – and the Royal Commission encouraged us to build on the successful Mental Health in Primary Schools Pilot by expanding the program to more schools across the state.

Half of all cases of anxiety, mood, impulse control and substance use disorders manifest by the age of 14.

Research suggests students with mental health concerns are behind their peers in

Grade 3, falling further behind throughout school.

This investment comes as the Labor Government today introduces the new Mental Health and Wellbeing Act – a historic milestone in Victoria’s work to build a mental health system that delivers tailored care to all Victorians, close to home.

The Bill replaces the current Mental Health Act 2014, setting out rights-based objectives and principles for responsive services to make sure people seeking care are involved in decisions about their treatment and support, as well as incorporating a statement of recognition and acknowledgement of treaty process.

Lived experience will be a central pillar of the new system and embedded in new entities, including regional Mental Health and Wellbeing Boards, and through a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Commission.

The Commission will provide statewide oversight of the mental health and wellbeing system, including through a new complaints resolution and investigation process, and will hold government to account for the performance of the system and the implementation of the Royal Commission recommendations.

The Bill establishes Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Victoria, a body to champion the voice of young people with lived experience on its governing board and advisory body.

By Parker McKenzie The Cuckoo restaurant in Olinda is likely to be sold soon after it was declared on contract by the real estate agent responsible for its sale.

Now is a good time to look back on the storied history of the Dandenong Ranges institution.

The restaurant first opened in 1958, after the Quamby Tearooms were board by Willi and Karin Keoppen. The German-themed restaurant offered an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord made by chef Willi Keoppen, who was a famous TV chef on Channel 7.

In 1976, Mr Keoppen disappeared under controversial and mysterious circumstances at age 46. Born in Berlin in 1929, Mr Keoppen immigrated to Australia during the 1950s. After

making his fortune in Australia, at the time of his disappearance business was booming.

The last time he was seen was on Saturday 28 February 1976. After drinking with a friend, Mr Koeppen left in his car, the last time he was seen alive.

The coroner’s report said the suspected cause of death is homicide, however, despite an investigation by Victoria Police; Mr Keoppen’s body has never been located and the cause of his presumed death is unknown.

The restaurant has been owned by the Keoppen family for the following four decades and was a famous tourist destination before it closed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite briefly reopening, the family decided to sell the business in 2021.

Disaster for footy club’s temporary facilities

By Parker McKenzie A local Football club struggling without access to their club rooms has had its temporary facilities destroyed by fierce winds, leaving them in limbo for the rest of the winter season.

Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club, based out of Kings Park in Upper Ferntree Gully, have been unable to use its club rooms for nearly 12 months after a leaking roof created a mould issue in June 2021.

After winds swept through the grounds on Tuesday 14 July, the temporary marquees set up by Knox City Council were damaged and rendered unusable.

On July 7, a member of the Upper Fern-

tree Football Club committee estimated the club will lose around $75,000 across the season without access to the facilities as it struggles with player retention and languishes at the bottom of the Division 1 table.

During a council meeting on Monday 23 May, Knox City Council said having the club rooms operational and repaired by October 2022 was “achievable” but unable to be confirmed.

Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club share the facilities with Upper Ferntree Gully Cricket Club, whose season begins in October.

Knox City Council was contacted for comment.

Beak sharpening bandits back at it

By Tyler Wright When Cindy DeLuca had new decking built on her Healesville property, she did not know several years - and $15,000 - later, she would still be trying to keep cockatoos from damaging timber and chipping away at her railing.

“We’ve just repaired the railings from the last lot of damage…instead of taking the railings and replacing all the corners, we just routed them off so they’re on an angle,” Cindy said.

“We had the painter come…three coats of paint he gave the railings, and then a week later [the cockatoos] are back and they’ve just destroyed it.”

The problem comes when no-one is at home to monitor the birds; with the most recent damage occurring after Cindy left her house for one night.

Ms DeLuca has tried the fake animals such as owls and toy snakes but the birds just “threw them over the edge.”

“We’ve got eight acres and lots of dead trees around our property and [the cockatoos] like to sit in the dead trees - I know they’re just sharpening their beaks…but they’re so destructive, and it’s the cost of it, [too]...

DELWP told the Star Mail cockatoos’ constantly chew to maintain beak size and condition as their beaks beaks grow throughout their lifetime.

“Cockatoos flock together to favourable food sources and are known to use regular flight paths and return to good feedings areas.

This can result in them returning to the same area each year and causing repeat damages to properties.” Port Phillip Regional Manager, Natural Environment Programs Merryn Kelly said.

One Mount Evelyn resident, Susanne Richards, came up with a solution almost 33 years after first encountering her local cockatoos - screwing plasterer’s metal corner strips into her railings.

After posting her innovative answer to what appears to be a common problem in the Yarra Valley, Susanne received almost 900 likes on one Facebook post.

“I painted a mixture of olive oil and cayenne pepper on our heritage balcony and they left that alone quick smart let me tell you,” one commenter wrote.

“We have also put metal over ours as well, it seems to work,” another penned.

Recent Arthur Rylah Institute for Environmental Science (ARI) modelling conducted earlier this year estimated the statewide population of Sulphur-crested cockatoos is 7.7 million, with a slight recent decline in number of Sulphur-crested cockatoos at a state-wide level.

Susanne said the issue has “always been the same” in the hills They’ve got magnificent communication between them - they know exactly what they’re doing - so if one finds a good spot, he tells all his mates,” she said.

“You can go to the several plastering depots around…you’ll be able to get the [metal] there.”

It is illegal to harass or harm native birds

“If you’re being faced with damage to your property, the aim is to break the habit of cockies roosting in the area they’re causing damage,” Port Phillip Regional Manager, Natural Environment Programs Merryn Kelly said.

Other deterrent methods include using chicken wire to protect furniture, wooden window frames, install rolling perches, spike clusters, electric shock perches or wiring to prevent birds perching on fixtures and using retractable shade-cloth to protect wooden surfaces or windows during absence.

Old timer helped to his feet in local rescue

By Tyler Wright A beloved horse owned by a Monbulk family was rescued from a near-fatal incident on Sunday 12 June after losing footing and falling into a ditch.

38-year-old Kamir has lived on David and Cheryl Cruttenden’s property on Old Emerald Road for 17 years after being taken on by the family as a rescue and suffering prior abuse.

When David saw his Gelding’s hooves flailing on the Sunday afternoon, his first thought was to call triple-0.

“His front knee and fetlock were folded under and jammed in the drain,” David said.

“After that call, I had Simon from Monbulk CFA at my gate within five minutes; and then Eric and his team arrived about 10 minutes later… they were very quick, very well organized, professional and had empathy towards the old boy (because he’s very old),” David said.

Monbulk and Macclesfield CFA brigades were notified of the incident at 3:46pm, with four CFA vehicles attending and the Macclesfield crew fortunately having specialist equipment to rescue the elderly Gelding.

“We have large rescue glides which are like giant stretchers for large animals, we have a lifting harness and bits of equipment that enable us to get straps underneath the animal when it’s lying down so we can drag them into better locations,” Macclesfield Fire Brigade Captain Sharon Merritt said.

“It’s sometimes challenging because [large animals] never seem to be stuck in the same way, so there doesn’t seem to be any standard way to pull them out of the predicament they’re in… it always requires a few of us putting our heads together and come up with different ideas of how to do the work,” Sharon said. mailcommunity.com.au

With the help of local Elite Equine Veterinarians, Kamir was given pain relief and treated for deep cuts on his front knees.

“Despite the cold and rain it was an absolute pleasure to work alongside such a professional, caring outfit. A stellar group of volunteers who gave up their Sunday evening to prioritise Kamir’s welfare,” Elite Equine staff member Dr Sue Jones said.

It is not the first time the so-called ‘belligerent’ old boy has gotten himself in trouble, needing to be rescued by CFA crew about six years ago after another fall.

Now known as a ‘repeat offender’ by brigade crews, owner David is just grateful for the community support.

The 2022 Sherbrooke Lyrebird Dawn Survey has begun at Sherbrooke Forest. With the first outing held on Saturday 18 June, participants from young kids to the elderly ventured out for a walk for the Lyrebird Survey Group’s annual count starting at Grants Picnic Ground, Kallista.

“People that have done it the previous year might be confident to be a leader on a post so they can teach inexperienced people; and I was really worried after Covid we wouldn’t have enough experienced surveyors come back, but the really heartening thing was we had more than enough to cover the post,” member Alex Maisey said.

Beginning at 6:00am, the group meets with a campfire made by park ranger Trevor roaring for them and Alex will give what he calls a “spiel” about the survey and the process of lyrebird spotting.

In groups of around five or six, each with a group leader, everyone will spread out to particular sites guided by torch light and wait for the birds to begin singing.

“At 7:30am we come back to the picnic ground after we’ve made our records and Trevor and Nicole, the park rangers, have this barbeque eggs and bacon breakfast ready,” Alex said.

“They have [a lot] of little frog in the hole eggs [egg in bread]... but not quite enough this time - we didn’t really expect to have that many people.”

The Lyrebird Survey Group has been observing the population for over 60 years, and Alex told the Star Mail in May the population has almost doubled in Sherbrooke over the last 20 years and is now estimated to lie between 150 and 200.

“It’s really a magical sort of experience to be out pre-dawn and and watch the forest wake up.

“Now with so many Lyrebirds in the forest; [it] just sounds beautiful because it’s a symphony of Lyrebirds and other birds; Kookaburras and Yellow Robins all [singing],” he said.

While Alex said the population from the count on 18 June looks to be much the same as the last survey completed, almost everyone was able to hear the call of a Lyrebird.

“People are fascinated by these birds and their mimicry; And that’s one thing you do always get to hear if you go on the walk is the mimicry of the kookaburra and everybody laughs when they hear a Lyrebird mimic a Kookaburra for the first time - it’s so perfect. It’s not, it’s not even like it’s one Kookaburra, [more like] s a family of Kookaburras,” Alex said.

Two more counts will be held on Saturday 2 July and Saturday 16 July, with attendees advised to bring a torch, pencil, smart phone or watch and compass.

“After the 16th, we’ll put all the entries into the computer program that we use and cross reference all the records,” Alex said.

“With triangulation, you can pinpoint roughly where each male is and then produce a map from that, and that gives us our number of males in the population,” he said.

Best parmas of the year A local Clematis hotel has taken out the award for their parmigiana at this year’s hotel industry night of nights.

At the Australian Hotel Association (AHA) Victoria State Awards for Excellence held at the Crown Palladium on Monday 16 May, Paradise Valley Hotel were awarded ‘Parma of the Year,’ after nominating the categories they wished to be judged in; including Excellence in Service and Best Metropolitan Pub Restaurant.

Co-owner Mark Protheroe said the judging is similar to a “mystery shopper” experience

where all hotel operations are taken into account.

“We use fresh chicken breast; we crumb it ourselves…it is then cooked off as schnitzels and then we finish them with our tomato sauce [which is] cooked overnight in the ovens to richen it and take away some of that sharper acidity you find in tomato sauce recipes,” Mark said. “We use a cheese blend of a couple of different cheeses to top it before baking it until it’s golden brown.

[It’s] consistently one of our most popular items, certainly since winning the award it’s even grown in stature.”

Paradise Valley Hotel’s Khayla Markham was awarded for Excellence in Service on the night.

“I think the key is we treat everyone equally, so when people come in through the door, whether they’re regulars or not, they get treated with respect and dignity,” Mark said.

“It comes back down to community once again; our community including our staff are engaged, active and supportive of what we’re trying to achieve,” he said.

1250 patrons filled the Palladium at the 2022 State Awards, celebrating not only win-

ners and finalists but the spirit of the industry over the past three years.

Dine for Ukraine crisis

By Parker McKenzie Residents in the Dandenong Ranges can experience a Ukrainian home-cooked meal featuring traditional staples like borscht, varenyky and holubtsi, in support of families affected by the invasion of Ukraine. A Taste of Ukraine will be held on Sunday 17 July 12pm at the Emerald Senior Citizens Centre, with funds raised going directly to Ukrainian families through Rotary International’s AFUO Ukrainian Crisis Appeal.

Erica Kurec, who is of Ukrainian heritage, said the event will raise many for people who are in desperate need of support.

“The war is ongoing and it seems to affect more and more people in large n umbers who have had to escape from Ukraine and go to neighbouring Poland or other countries, leaving husbands and fathers behind,” she said.

“There are a lot of casualties in terms of soldiers and civilians being injured, so there are a lot of services those are required like medical, social and psychiatric services.”

The event is supported by the Social Justice Group of the Catholic Parish in the Dandenong Ranges and will feature a cultural display, sales and a raffle. Ms Kurec, Helen Lutshesko and Lucy McMurray will share their Ukrainian culture with attending people to help raise the funds.

Ms Kurec said the organisers are working on finding a Ukrainian musical artist for the event too.

“There will be a display table of the various sort of cultural artefacts that Ukraine is well known for, including the decorated Easter eggs, which are called pysanky, and elaborate embroideries,” Ms Kurec said.

“The community has been so responsive and generous in its support in the past, and especially with the last function, the Middle Eastern meal.”

In April 2022, the Social Justice Group of the Catholic Parish in the Dandenong Ranges came together with Casey Grandmothers 4 Refugees and David Spiteller of the Asylum Seeker Centre Dandenong to raise funds for seekers of asylum with a Middle Eastern feast, raising $2381 for the cause.

Ms Kurec said the feast will be a rare opportunity for people in the Dandenong Ranges to experience the taste of traditional foods of Ukraine.

“It’s a very hospitable country and we’re going to open the event with an offering of bread and salt, which is what Ukrainians do when they greet visitors to their home,” she said.

“Myself and two other Ukrainian women in the community are presenting this, but we are supported by the social justice group.”

The event is BYO drinks and interested people can book the event with a $25 donation by 15 July by calling 0423615662.

Caffeine fix provides work and life skills

By Mikayla van Loon A group of young Burmese migrants have just graduated from a free introductory course into coffee making, teaching them the technical skills of being a barista while developing their English.

Because the course has been so successful, organisers are hopeful local cafes in the Lilydale, Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges area would be willing to take on graduates for work experience and volunteer hours to help them gain confidence and eventually a job.

Program coordinator Warren Mendola began liaising with local Burmese leaders in 2021 to establish a hospitality training initiative having identified a skills shortage in their community.

Due to Covid-19, however, the program kept being disrupted and so it was delayed until term two this year.

Using the facilities at the Central Ringwood Community Centre, students learning English at Box Hill Institute and people from the Burmese community took part in the eight week ‘Migrant Barista Program’.

“It’s about learning how to make a great coffee, while learning customer service skills and building up your confidence and self esteem to be able to work in hospitality,” Mr Mendola said.

“What I noticed at the beginning of the term of the Migrant Barista Program was that there was just an absolute fascination with how coffee is made.

“These students didn’t really understand the concept of grinding coffee and then going through a coffee machine and steaming milk.

It was really, really beautiful to see that fascination.”

Funded by the Department of Education, Mr Mendola said he hopes the course can be something the community centre offers each term.

For five of the students who graduated on Monday 20 June, most in their mid to late 20s, the aim is to get their first job.

“Some of the students say ‘I’ve never worked a day in my life, but now I can do this program and I feel confident enough to go and start cold calling and start applying for jobs’.”

Over the eight week course, Mr Mendola said he came to know each of the participants really well and has now offered to be a reference on their resume as they begin looking for work.

While the main focus is about job ready skills, for some of the participants it has been about gaining an extra skill that they can take to their local church or because it has connected them with another group of people. mailcommunity.com.au

“Part of it too, is just building those connections in the community. Because if you’re in a new world, the more connections to places, services and people you can make, you’re probably going to have better outcomes on employment.”

The next part of what Mr Mendola is hoping to do, with the help of the Migrant Information Centre and Jobs Victoria, is to enquire with local cafes about work experience opportunities.

“I’d love for a cafe to be able to give one of these students an opportunity to come in for a week or two and get that hands-on experience without any pressure of them feeling like they had to employ them,” he said.

“If you volunteer somewhere and people notice that you make great coffee, for example, or you have really good customer service, it probably increases the likelihood of employment.”

Not only would it allow students to practice their skills but to become familiar with point of sale machines, taking multiple orders and understanding how a cafe operates.

“There’s no barrier around ages or anything like that…Anyone can come along because it’s not just about learning to make coffee, it’s about feeling connected, it’s one extra place that these people can come to where they feel part of the community.”

At the heart of the community centre’s philosophy, Mr Mendola said, is providing a safe and welcoming space where migrants feel comfortable to come for any of the classes or programs, so they can form friendships and build their English proficiency.

The RSPCA Op Shop in Ferntree Gully has welcomed visitors purchasing their wares since it opened in June.

RSPCA Victoria relocated their Boronia Op Shop from 17 Dorset Square, Boronia to 32 Forest Road, Ferntree Gully and locals couldn’t wait to see what was hiding within.

RSPCA Victoria Op Shop Network Supervisor Liz Irvine said relocation is the start of an exciting new chapter for the store.

“The new Ferntree Gully store is larger, has ample parking and improved amenities,” she said.

“We hope that this change will allow us to offer an even better experience to the local community while assisting us to raise funds for our work caring for vulnerable animals.”

The RSPCA op shops sell a range of new and secondhand goods to the public and are run by volunteers to raise funds for supporting RSPCA Victoria’s mission to end animal cruelty.

Ms Irvine thanked Boronia locals for their support of the op shop, who volunteer their time generously to assist with its running.

“We are thrilled that many of our wonderful Boronia volunteers will be making the transition to Ferntree Gully and are really looking forward to welcoming customers into the new location,” she said.

“We really appreciate their ongoing commitment and thank them, especially for their support during this time of transition.”

Grant McCommell, who spent six years volunteering at the Boronia store, said they weren’t expecting to open on the rainy Thursday 9 June.

“They got everything ready quicker than they thought, so we’ve just had a lot of people drop by,” he said.

“We had people waiting before we were open waiting to come in and with weather like this, that’s a pretty good sign.

Dream spot now reality

By Celeste Duthie Lockdown had many people entertain the thought of starting new projects, but Belgrave local Josh Kinnes followed through by signing a lease for a dream location he’d had his eye on for a while.

Located on the main street of Belgrave, Josh routinely commented to his wife Desiree how perfect it would be for a barbershop.

So after a cancelled trip to Bali, true grit and passion, Josh and Desiree jumped feet first into making their dreams a reality all the while having to work in and around lockdowns.

His vision for this venue, now named Ash and Oak Barbershop, was to create his ideal barbershop and get back to the “old school values” by “making people feel important and look good.”

“I opened the barbershop not only as a business to support the local community but to create a hub to engage with local people,” Josh said.

With a background in youth work, Josh wanted to bring that sense of community into

his business as well as providing a creative space for people to showcase and sell their products.

Josh is currently one month away from completing his barber course and actually began designing his shop with zero hair styling experience.

He truly embodies his motto, “risk it for the biscuit,” which he agrees with so much he now has printed on t-shirts, which can be purchased in store.

From a passing aspiration, Josh has now managed to build a flourishing circle of wonderful customers, recruited new barbers and the site now even boasts a tattoo studio out the back and a retail section where a collection of leather goods and other items are available for purchase.

“So here we are... two or three lockdowns later, a few legend barbers deep, a tattoo studio, a community of amazing customers and we’re still here,” he said.

Building the workforce The Victorian Disability Worker Commission has launched a campaign encouraging disability workers to register to show people with disability they have the right skills to deliver quality services.

Cases of abuse and neglect in the sector currently being heard at the Royal Commission demonstrate how vital it is for people with disability to be confident that their worker is safe, skilled and professional.

Victoria is leading the way in delivering better safeguards for the sector and is the only state in Australia that has a registration scheme in place for workers, introduced in July last year.

Disability workers that are registered have been deemed suitable by the independent Disability Worker Registration Board of Victoria.

The assessment provides additional checks to the NDIS worker screen criminal history check, by assessing a worker’s skills and experience and commitment to undertaking continuing professional development.

Melanie Eagle, Chair of the Disability Worker Registration Board of Victoria, said that disability workers do crucial work with some of the most vulnerable people in the community.

Registration acknowledges this and recognises workers for the important work they do.

“We know that disability workers are passionate and proud of their work. There is a huge amount of trust involved between a worker and a person with disability, so knowing upfront that a worker is appropriately as-

sessed provides great confidence.

“Everyday disability workers deliver diverse services to people with disability, ranging from high-level 24-hour personal care to ad hoc support as required.

“Workers that register are not only providing confidence to those with disability, their families and carers, but are showing they want to be part of change in the sector to ensure the right people are working with our loved ones,” Ms Eagle said.

Employers who choose registered disability workers also have the benefit of saving time, money and paperwork as checks are done by the Victorian Disability Worker Commission.

Disability workers can go online to find out more and to register at vdwc.vic.gov.au/registration.

Registration is currently free and a worker’s skills, experience and track record are all taken into account.

Applications are now open for the second year of registration which runs from 1 October to 30 September.

Ninja battles it out on TV

By Celeste Duthie Despite never seeing the original Japanese Ninja Warrior, 16-year-old Upwey local Ash Campbell is making his Australian Ninja Warrior debut in the 2022 season. This season is the first where 16 and 17-year-olds have been allowed to enter and Mr Campbell took his opportunity.

“I signed up for a kickboxing class with some roommates and at the time Ninja was really kind of taking off,” he said.

“The owners of the kickboxing club had a few obstacles set up in their front yard and just happened on that day we were giving it a go.

“I had a bit of a knack for it and I started doing it more regularly as gaining popularity and here we are now.”

His first attempt at the course will air on Monday 27 July at 7.30 on Channel 9. Mr Campbell said the adrenaline rush started to kick in during the interviews before he competed and described the course as “intimidating,” as many other people would.

“Having everyone you know in the stands, cameras on you, basically just your moment,” he said.

“I think if I were to do it again I’d have a lot more knowledge on how to handle it, but in general it has given me a lot of strengths” When asked how similar the experience of competing is when compared to what the public sees on television, Mr Campbell said it is completely different.

“I’d say, when you’re training in a gym, it’s much more a family environment, compared to going through a production team and stuff like that.” We see many ninjas return repeatedly to compete in Australian Ninja Warrior and Mr Campbell thinks if he were to do it again, it would be far more straightforward.

“Right now I’m looking at where life takes me,” Mr Campbell said.

“I’ve been thinking about becoming a personal trainer, maybe I’ll go down that route.”

He also encouraged people to watch the new Ninja Warrior season.

Writing with Emily Webb on local true crime

By Parker McKenzie “I particularly enjoyed talking to people and finding out their stories, and then you can help communicate that to a wider audience. I really liked the aspect of helping people get their message out with writing.”

Writing is often daunting, but to do so about real crimes — especially those close to home — can be challenging and perilous.

Author and podcaster Emily Webb was primarily interested in another path before she started covering true crime.

“I was a community newspaper journalist, eight years with Leader newspapers, and really loved talking to people about local stories,” she says.

“When I wrote my first book, it evolved from me following different cases and reporting on some in shorter newspaper articles.”

Now the author of several true crime books — including the recently published Surburban True Crime: Australian cases you’ll never forget and some you’ve never heard of — Webb says she starts the process by deep diving into her research wherever she can find information.

“If it’s an older case I start by looking for newspaper articles, court documents or getting in touch with people who might know about it,” she says.

“The more you find out the more threads you can keep following. It’s amazing that sometimes when you’re writing about a particular case, people pop up in the most unexpected ways.”

From suburban crimes to healthcare professionals who kill, Webb’s books have covered gruesome material which could easily become salacious or gratuitous.

“The nature of true crime is there are facts about the cases and there are things that happened right? If it’s in the context of the coverage of it and it’s within reason that’s fine, I don’t like focusing too much on what someone did to someone or even the perpetrator, I always want to know about the victim,” Webb says.

“You need to strike a balance and there is definitely more awareness about covering true crime in an ethical and sensitive way.”

She also co-hosts the Australian True Crime podcast, which complements her writing, and a solo podcast with crime fiction authors called Killer Content.

Webb says while her work hasn’t impacted her emotional or mental well-being, one piece of her writing has influenced the way she approaches people close to victims of crime.

“It was from my first book, I went and spoke to the parents of a woman called Jane Thurgood-Dove who was murdered in 1997, and she was actually shot in front of her car and in front of her children. It was a mistaken identity hit and really tragic,” she says.

The crime remains unsolved despite police having suspects who in the years following the murder passed away, making it unlikely to ever be solved despite a $1 million reward.

Webb says she often focuses on covering obscure crimes and events which have faded from the public’s memory.

“On the Australian True Crime Podcast, we are focused on talking to people who have lived experience of crimes, whether it is family members who have been impacted or victimsurvivors and also people who are involved through work like a police officer or lawyer,” she says.

“We are really attracted to getting that firsthand experience from people and going beyond the headlines. It might give people a different perspective.”

For aspiring writers, Webb says anyone interested in covering true crime needs to be aware of laws covering reporting and writing about real events.

“Because we listen to, read and watch a lot of American true crime, the rules are completely different to Australia,” she says.

“We’ve got strict laws about reporting on court cases. You need to think about why you want to do this, it’s a long game and sometimes you might be researching something for a really long time —months or sometimes years — before you are ready to write something.”

Landscape artist bringing works to Sherbrooke

By Tyler Wright An Olinda artist will be holding an art exhibition, ‘Rescued from the Storm,’ at Sherbrooke Art Gallery for a month starting from Saturday 2 July.

Robert Gerber’s studio was damaged by a fallen tree in a sudden storm in November 2021, and he is now looking to showcase and sell his landscape and seascape paintings which still remain.

“I was hoping to get [the studio] repaired under insurance, but that hasn’t happened yet…they’ve taken the tree away and put a sheet of metal over the hole,” Robert said.

“I’ve taken all the paintings out…a few were lost completely but some are slightly damaged.”

Those that remain intact will be on display at the gallery for viewing and to purchase.

While Robert has recently stopped paint-

ing regularly, his passion began at a young age.

“My mother was an artist many years ago and as I was looking at a picture of someone’s painting, I said ‘If I painted I’d like to do something like that’.

She said well ‘there you are,’ got some brushes out and she set up a little still life for me and said ‘get on with it’ “So I did and I’ve been painting ever since basically.”

Robert reached out to the Sherbrooke Art Gallery to have his paintings displayed and sold after already giving some away to family, and the venue agreed to host his artwork after the Sherbrooke Arts Societies’ Streeton, Roberts and McCubbin Awards Exhibition ending on Saturday 25 June.

Looking out over a valley of trees and greenery, Ms Moore-Gilbert sat at her dining room table to write her powerful book ‘The Uncaged Sky’.

prison, Ms Moore-Gilbert said it was healing to get everything out.

“I had so much to process because when you’re living through it, you just take each day as it comes and you don’t plot out what’s happened to you in the past and make sense of it necessarily.

“So coming home and deciding to write this book, I had to really sit down and process everything and some of it was quite jumbled in my mind and I had to make order and sense of my memories.”

While Ms Moore-Gilbert said those initial few months of being in prison where she was in “such a frantic state of mind” were the most difficult to remember, it’s hard to imagine with the level of detail portrayed in ‘The Uncaged Sky’.

“I was in shock and very upset and traumatised by what was going on but after my brain settled and I started to come to terms with the routine of the prison, my surroundings and the rules, I started to remember everything very vividly.”

Recounting each of the incidents that happened in prison, Ms Moore-Gilbert said even to this day she can remember them like they were yesterday but that time to her is entirely distorted.

“My sense of time is just warped by this, it feels like yesterday and it feels like a million years ago at the same time.

“I still have those vivid memories, I can close my eyes and imagine that I’m in my cell right now but at the same time, it also feels like it never happened to me at all and it was just a terrible dream that I had last night.”

Not only was it cathartic to tell her story, Ms Moore-Gilbert hopes it helps her “draw a line under it and move on with my life.”

Ms Moore-Gilbert is still trying to comprehend her inner strength and ability to get

through the most harrowing of situations possible but said she is “not always strong and [is] not always coping.”

Nevertheless, she said she never realised just how strong she could be, nor how much our brains are capable of as part of the human condition when coping with trauma or trying to memorise important information.

Bringing that strength into her everyday life in Australia, Ms Moore-Gilbert said she is now less compromising and “I’m standing up for myself more.”

Still fighting emotional battles everyday, a large part of her reason for remaining strong is because of her friends and cellmates Niloufar Bayani and Sepideh Kashani, who remain in prison four years after their arrest.

“I promised them that I would speak out about it and I’d speak up and tell everybody what’s going on there. I really just felt like it was a sense of duty I had to them as well.

“I’m wary of making my life about this. I’m very cognizant of not getting myself emotionally weighed down too much by taking on board other people’s traumas and sufferings.

So it’s a delicate balance. I don’t want to work professionally only on such issues but it is my duty.”

Moving forward with life, Ms Moore-Gilbert is not entirely sure what the future holds or what she will do next.

For now she is focusing on the book, which will soon be published in the United States but said come the turn of the new year, she will see where life takes her.

“I’m hoping I’ll have an epiphany or something. Otherwise, I’ll just go work in the local cafe in Belgrave because there’s so many signs out saying ‘employees needed’. That would be a pretty easy and chill way to ease myself back into the workforce,” Ms Moore-Gilbert said semi-jokingly.

“Coming back here and being able to just soak up the greenness and the plant life and knowing that stuff is living around me, it was really quite overwhelming at the beginning.”

But being able to go running in her local reserve, getting out into her garden and seeing the valley from her dining room “was really soothing and really calming.”

“I was really happy that this is where I landed after coming back from Iran because it gave me a sense of peace and serenity that I probably wouldn’t have got if I was living in the city.”

Although it was her home, having only spent a few months in it with her then husband before her ordeal in Iran, Ms Moore-Gilbert said it “felt pretty strange” to live in that space.

“It did feel like home. The house itself did, in a way, but it was also very strange to come back to an empty house that was not as it was when I’d left it and have to live here alone and readjust again. But it was a blessing, especially because of lockdowns and Covid,” Ms MooreGilbert said.

Initially hesitant to be around large groups of people, the Dandenong Ranges became a safe haven, away from crowds and too many people who knew who she was.

Even though neighbours checked in on her in those first few months, Ms Moore-Gilbert said they gave her space, something she was extremely grateful for.

“I’d spent so long in solitary confinement… if I was in a big crowd I just didn’t feel 100 per cent safe, I felt a bit anxious.

“And being in a place like Belgrave, where I have my own space, I have a backyard, I have a garden, it’s not crowded, if you want to see people you can, if you don’t, you can keep to yourself, I think that was really good.”

Two years and three months. 804 days. This is how long Dandenong Ranges resident Kylie Moore-Gilbert was imprisoned in an Iranian jail for.

Captured by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in 2018 for being a suspected, but unfounded, spy for either MI6 or Australia, Ms Moore-Gilbert was transferred to the 2A wing of Evin Prison where she was held in solitary confinement, dehumanised and mentally tortured.

A rigorous line of questioning and interrogations followed her ‘arrest’, surrounding the nature of her visit to Iran.

Ms Moore-Gilbert had attended an academic conference after being invited by a Tehran university because of her research into Islam, revolutions in the Middle East and Bahraini politics as a lecturer at the University of Melbourne.

Conducting what she thought were harmless interviews for her research, turned into the catalyst for her detainment.

While held in a hotel after being taken from the airport, never did Ms Moore-Gilbert think her three week working holiday would turn into a little over two years being held captive for ransom.

The Australian government had been working to release Ms Moore-Gilbert by way of negotiations with the IRGC months after being taken prisoner but it wasn’t until a media storm that a deal was struck between Thailand, Iran and Australia to conduct a prisoner swap in late 2020.

Reduced to living in a two by three metre cell, with a barely functioning toilet, returning to Australia was an overwhelming culture shock.

First living with family in New South Wales, Ms Moore-Gilbert made the trip back to Melbourne at the beginning of 2021, in between lockdowns and border closures.

She returned to the house she had bought with her ex-husband just months before her trip to Iran in the green and leafy suburb of Belgrave.

It was here that she put pen to paper and wrote her astoundingly powerful and heartbreaking book ‘The Uncaged Sky: My 804 Days in an Iranian Prison’.

“I wrote it at my dining room table looking out over the trees that I have in my backyard,” she said.

The contrast of being enclosed by concrete walls to being surrounded by nature was a saving grace for Ms Moore-Gilbert in those early months.

“I didn’t see a green plant. The only green I saw was far away trees whose branches might be near the exercise yard of the prison but they weren’t something I could touch or see right in front of my face,” she said.

“I was in a desert prison for three months and not a single thing grew there, it was just barren.

more grounded as celebrity takes its toll on Elvis. The film delves deep into Elvis’s connection with African-American music culture, and shows his rise to legendary status, as a disruptive figure inspiring both frenzied admiration and moral outrage, but doesn’t shy away from his growing health, drug and family issues.

The film is very long (159 minutes) but never drags, and the musical numbers are soaring, passionate spectacles that further the tension between Elvis being true to himself and the rigours of business.

Oddly enough, the one weak link in the film is Tom Hanks, who plays Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s long-time friend and manager.

Hanks plays a compelling antagonist – a greasy, manipulative leech who nonetheless guides Elvis to stardom – but several scenes feature unnecessary, irritating narration from Hanks, and the film has a bizarre framing device of Parker on his death-bed, imagining himself in a casino and telling Elvis’s story.

A sterling diamond-studded character study that could do with a little less narration, Elvis is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

Looking back at 25 PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN Why do people nominate lists of “(insert a number) books you must read before you die”? Some would say they simply can’t help it.

According to Gia R. from Book Riot, we feel the need to share what we read because we want to share something of value.

Not only does this help to strengthen our relationships with others, but it also allows us to exchange viewpoints. In other words, sharing lets us learn not just other people’s views, but also where they come from in terms of their backgrounds, positions, values and visions.

This, in turn, enables us to better appreciate what we read from different perspectives.

Meanwhile – and perhaps more importantly – sharing helps others understand us. In Gia R.’s words: “Sharing a book can be a lot easier than providing a personal detail or explicitly stating something about one’s self. It is a way to share a part of ourselves.”

So. what can we learn about ourselves as Australians by sharing our favourite Australian stories?

What unique aspects of our society and culture do we want each other to know in order to promote tolerance, respect, and cohesion in diversity? Take reviewer Melanie Kembrey, who recently shared via The Age what she considers as the “25 best Australian novels of the last 25 years”. Her words reenforce the aforementioned point of sharing enabling the better understanding of others as well as ourselves: “There is no shortage of heartbreak, havoc or hilarity in Australian literature... Literature has always been a way to understand who we are as a nation, and the last quarter of a century in novels shows how bold, innovative, brave and important our storytellers are.”

Kembrey’s list is a reminder of Books That Made Us (2021), which, in its author Carl Reinecke’s words, “selected a sample of influential books, almost all novels” that are “stepping stones in the complex, crowded history of Australian literature and culture”.

Yet, as Kembrey’s list only extends to the past 25 years, it focuses on awardwinning and commercially successful books, “from those that have broken sales records, courted controversy and challenged the status quo, to quiet achievers that have slipped off our reading lists”.

Among the listed 25 are many household names, such as Peter Carey, Geraldine Brooks, Kate Grenville, Markus Zusak, Tim Winton, Steve Toltz, Craig Silvey, Richard Flanagan, Liane Moriarty, Charlotte Wood, Heather Rose, and Trent Dalton.

The list also includes many wellknown authors of diverse backgrounds, such as Alexis Wright, Christos Tsiolkas, Kim Scott, Michelle de Kretser, Melissa Lucashenko, Tara June Winch, and Anita Heiss.

Finally, the list features some delightful classics, such as books by Madeleine St John, Lily Brett, Thea Astley, Sonya Hartnett, Nikki Gemmell, and Shirley Hazzard.

Digital skills in the future media world

By Renee Wood There’s no denying the media landscape is changing, with reports of newspapers shutting down and online mediums gaining traction over the last few years.

It’s a turbulent environment for long standing print mediums to follow, trying to stay relevant while learning the new ways of future reporting.

As younger generations take to social media or turn to digital publications, there’s still always a place and value for the printed publication, but the desire to maximise coverage across what’s available is high.

That’s something the industry is gathering together to do, and it’s a train the Star News Group has jumped on.

A new Digital News Academy has been launched by Newscorp, Melbourne Business School and Google, allowing publications from all over Australia enlist their savvy reporters into the course. And that savvy reporter for Star News is our highly competent and engaging reporter Mikayla van Loon.

Ms van Loon reports for the Star Mail news-

papers, predominately looking after the reporting for Lilydale and Mount Evelyn areas.

She’s leading the charge for the company as the first digital academy student, sharing with us the tips and tools that are needed to make an impact on the big wide web.

Ms van Loon willingly enlisted in the course because she thought it was a good opportunity to expand her knowledge.

The RMIT graduate of 2020 said she’s always wanted to write for print but was interested in how social media can create greater engagement with readers.

“That intrigued me and wanting to just build my skill set knowing that moving forward it’s really going to be those digital platforms that takeover,” she said.

Since the course began Ms van Loon has joined for online webinars having discussions around digital platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and Tiktok, while being taught how to create content such as creating videos via phones.

Also speaking with leaders in the digital space such a Wall Street Journal Social Media manager Julia Munslow and Hashtag Our Sto-

ries co-founder Yusuf Omar has been a great eye opener.

“That was really interesting to hear how a really traditional Wall Street Journal publication is taking Tiktok on board,” she said.

“So far hearing from those people has probably been some of the best parts of it, learning from or hearing from people who have been really investing in this new digital landscape.

“It’s just interesting to hear from other people about the possibilities of what media could become - some of its really scary and how do we actually do this in a good way.”

Ms van Loon is a third of the way into the course of nine months and is looking ahead to data journalism and other digital techniques which will be included in the course.

A trip to visit the Google headquarters in America is also on the cards for the most engaged reporters and certificate badges which will be recognised globally is also provided on completion.

Until then, Ms van Loon will be looking to use her new found digital skills within Star Mail – so watch this space for more to come on our social media and digital platforms.

Star Mail bids farewell to Jackie Riley Many of our readers and locals may have come to know Star Mail’s administration and accounts receivable superstar Jackie Riley who’s been with us for more than a decade.

For 12 years Jackie has been with the Mail newspaper, seeing the many changes that have come to pass while remaining as the one solid and stable rock for many.

Jackie was part of the newspaper during the part ownership by North East Media and Star News Group, before Star News Group purchased the company outright in February 2020.

During her time Jackie has worked in a variety of departments, taking up anything that came her way with a smile, while always being the steady hand to guide newcomers into the office.

For readers, you may have come to know Jackie as being the person who always greets you at the front desk or the voice you’ll hear answering phone queries.

She’s made lasting friendships and many meaningful memories, but now it’s time for us to say farewell to Jackie as she hits the road on a new adventure with family.

From alleged big cats to aliens, since the Dandenong Ranges was settled there has been all manner of strange sighting.

Here are three of the most enduring urban legends throughout the area.

One of Victoria’s most popular legends is stories of big cats like panthers and leopards being spotted in the hardto-reach areas of the state, including the hills.

In fact, as recently this paper reported a big cat sighting as recently as 2019 when a man told the Star Mail he had spotted a meter-tall cat.

“The thing passed right In front of my car and its body would’ve been a metre tall … it was even with the front of my car,” he said.

“It didn’t even look at me, just kept moving and went into the bushes, and the way it moved was different to a dog – its back didn’t jolt like a dog, it stayed smooth as it pushed into the bush.”

The Victorian Government even commissioned a study by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to get to the bottom of the big cat mystery, which was released in 2012 and found there is zero evidence they exist in the Victorian wilds.

This finding hasn’t stopped people from continuing to claim to spot the large felines on the prowl, or journalists from newspapers believing their claims to be newsworthy enough to print.

Another reoccurring urban myth is the sighting of aliens throughout the Dandenong Ranges.

One famous case — the abduction of Kelly Cahill — is shaky at best, however, strange lights across the Ranges have been sighted as early as 1909.

Melbourne newspaper The Argus published a hilarious story in 1914 detailing mysterious lights across the Dandenong Ranges being reported, only to be discovered to be a false alarm.

“According to two officers of the Defence department motored out to (Mt) Dandenong on successive days under instructions from the State commandant Colonel Wallace to make observations for themselves,” the Argus wrote.

“A rush was made by motor, only to find that an itinerant picture showman was endeavouring to attract a “house” by flashing the light from the projecting machine from peak to peak.”

The heritage-listed castle in Olinda, originally called Glenleven, is rumoured to be haunted. The unique bluestone building was originally owned by Miss Lydia Reid, and the heritage description describes the builder as having “many difficulties with its construction and the Castle were not lived in for a long period” during its construction in the 1920s.

The castle is on private land and not accessible to the public.

Poets to apply for prize

By Parker McKenzie An expression, an escape or even capturing a moment or feeling in time; Poetry can mean many different things to many people.

The long-running Woorilla Poetry Prize has given poets — both budding and established — the opportunity to show what the written word means to them personally.

Writer and poets Professor Kevin Brophy, a former winner of the prize, and Alicia Sometimes will judge the entries for the 2022 Poetry Prize, held on November 20.

Mr Brophy said he first became aware of the Woorilla Poetry Prize because he wanted his poems to be read by the poet Judith Rodriguez, who judged the competition until her passing in 2018.

“Encountering a poem I guess is a bit like encountering a person. It’s hard to describe exactly what’s going on, exactly what it is you’re encountering,” he said.

“When you encounter a person, often you don’t know until much later, what it was that attracted you, interested you or impressed you.”

Entries to the prize’s three categories are now open.

This year’s Judith Rodriquez Open Section will feature a $2000 1st prize and a $300 dollars second prize.

The Louise Rockne Youth Section, named after the prize’s co-founder, and the culturally and linguistically diverse sub-category will reward the winner with $250 and 2nd place with $100. Both are for people aged 12 to 18-yearsold.

Ms Sometimes said what elevates a poem for her is “you can tell that you’re in the hands of a crafts person and there’s always something that makes you feel or think.”

“It’s just about what speaks to you, what is well crafted and what is vibrating a bit more

“That’s why I find poetry competitions ephemeral in some ways because there are so many good writers and it’s sometimes what catches you at that moment.”

Mr Brophy said most poets “write into a vacuum or a chasm, into a crater of non-reaction.”

“It’s always amazingly miraculous to have a reaction to a poem and to actually win a prize is a bit of a dream for a poet. It doesn’t happen very often,” he said.

“It takes a bit of courage, I think, to call

yourself a poet. It requires a little bit of validation and I’m always pleased when a young poet gets that kind of encouragement that a prize offers.”

Entrants for the open section will pay $15 per entry, with entrants into the two youth categories able to submit four poems for free.

Ms Sometimes said having her poetry recognised can boost confidence for an aspiring poet.

“You are speaking to a wider audience, which is sometimes when we’re younger we

That was not the end of his tenure, though, assuming various roles including treasurer, president and goal umpire after hanging up his boots.

The Gembrook Cockatoo Football Club ‘Brooker of the Century’ was acknowledged by Senior and Reserve players ahead of a Seniors win against Emerald on Saturday 18 June.

Players and club members shook Len ‘Specs’ Ure’s hand as they ran out onto the field in what was a significant occasion for the club faithful and the wider community.

The 94-year-old former player began his career at the club in 1945 af ter the Second World War and still ‘bleeds green’ to this day - enjoying the opportunity to experience Gembrook beat old rivals Emerald on game day.

“It was one of the biggest crowds I’ve seen at a [home and away game],” Len said.

“We’ve had a few finals where we would have had a crowd as big; but not for a home and away game.”

Len was a part of the inaugural meeting where four teams came together to form the Mountain District Football Association in the 40s, with his family dedicating their time and expertise to ensuring the success of the club.

While Len’s mother would wash the Gembrook players’ jumpers every Sunday, his father could also be found mowing the playing field.

Due to rationing, Len remembers the playing jumpers of each team each being one solid colour.

“Gembrook got green, Emerald [got] black, Monbulk; morone and Belgrave...they finished up black and white - before the war, Gembrook used to be black and white,” Len said.

“It didn’t take long once men returned back from war to build up to ten teams.

“We had an argument (although I wasn’t there) at the delegates meeting to form the

Monbulk Netball defeated Beaconsfield over the weekend.

Hawks celebrate four from four With the Senior, Reserves and Women’s football teams all having byes it was left to the Under 19s and Netballers to represent Monbulk this week. With a smaller but enthusiastic crowd, Monbulk had a different vibe than a normal Saturday at the Nest.

The Under 19s began proceedings in the morning with a clash of likely finals aspirants Monbulk and Emerald. Third-placed Emerald was a game ahead of Monbulk in fourth, but a Hawk win of greater than two points would be sufficient to usurp the Bombers from the Top 3. The fixture was to favour the home side as a number of Under 19s playing in the Seniors were able to drop back for this match, giving Monbulk a squad of 24 players, compared to just 14 players that Emerald was able to muster. This resulted in Monbulk having 10 players on the bench.

The two sides were evenly matched and it was the Bombers who gained an early lead, although the Hawks managed to wipe out the deficit by halftime. Monbulk was then able to extend the margin out to 18 points by threequarter time before an Emerald rally reduced the margin to 8 points by the final siren. The Hawks had done enough to secure third place on the ladder but face another challenge next Saturday against the undefeated Narre Warren side at Kalora Park.

It was to be a big day for the Monbulk netball teams who were making their debut on the newly opened courts at the Monbulk Recreation Reserve. The impressive infrastructure added to the recent improvements to the ground over the last 3-4 years and will stand Monbulk in good stead for the seasons ahead.

The C Grade netballers were to christen the new courts by playing the first official match on the new facilities. Both Monbulk and Beaconsfield have not had the best year in C Grade, being level on the ladder in 8th and 9th places respectively in the 10-team competition, both having tasted success on just two occasions. In a spirited contest, there was little separating the sides but Monbulk gradually drew ahead by 5 goals by the time hostilities concluded.

For the record, Jamie Hicken had the honour of scoring the first goal on the new courts.

This week they will meet the only side that has been able to better them during the current season when they meet Narre Warren.

Both sides were determined to put their best foot forward and an intense contest took place in the first half which included a vigorous play by both sides. Just 4 goals separated the teams by that stage, with the Hawks ahead by that margin. Monbulk then exerted themselves in the second half and they were regularly able to create turnovers as they accumulated 28 goals to the Eagles’ 16. Tiana Mancarella and Paige Whitworth clamped down in defence while Stephanie Puopolo, who had previously had stints at Adelaide Thunderbirds and Queensland Firebirds in the national competition, was unstoppable up forward.

Close encounter for Gembrook vs Seville Seville journeyed out to Gembrook Showgrounds to take on the third-placed Gembrook.

In the blustery conditions, Seville had what was the scoring end with 18 of the 21 goals kicked during the day at the temporary clubrooms end.

Seville kicked three majors to none for the quarter and went into the first break 18 points up.

The second quarter saw Gembrook come out full of running piling on three quick goals in the opening minutes.

Gembrook’s Josh Tilly getting clearance after clearance and getting the ball down to forward Myles Wareham who slotted 3 for the term.

The Blues were having trouble hitting targets with hand or foot which was causing costly turnovers.

Seville did work hard at times and pushed up into the wind to register 2 majors but had no answer for a dominant Gembrook who slammed on 7-5 for the quarter to go into the main break 17 points up.

A 5-goal to nil third quarter saw Seville go into the final break 13 points up.

Yarra Glen travelled to Belgrave, with the home team desperate for their first win Yarra Glen started well but as the quarter progressed Belgrave started winning contests and finding loose players.

Their forwards in Dawson and Worsley were giving the River Pig defenders trouble and Belgrave went into quarter time leading 5-3 to 3.5.

With the prospect of a victory, the Belgrave midfielders took control in the second and they went into halftime with a 21-point lead.

Yarra Glen came out in the third quarter with more purpose and intensity and dominated general play kicking 4-6 to 1-4 to be just a point down.

The River Pigs missed a number of set shots and this continued in the last. The ball spent 90 per cent of the time in Yarra Glen’s half, but Yarra Glen failed to convert their chances until defender turned forward Jayden Schille marked strongly to convert the necessary goals for Yarra Glen to run out 9 point winners, 9.19 to 9.10 Netball Yarra Glen A grade faced Belgrave on their beautiful new court in a battle for fourth spot. The home side started strongly taking a 2-goal lead into quarter time. The Yarra girls rallied in the second quarter with defenders Katelyn Vanderkolk and Peta Fay restricting Belgrave to 5 goals whilst in attack Yarra Glen added 12. Yarra Glen continued with much of the same in the second half, intercepting Belgrave’s forward moves whilst converting in attack to run out easy winners, 48-26.

B Grade, sitting third on the ladder took on fourth-placed Belgrave in a must-win encounter. Belgrave started strongly to be 2 goals up at quarter time.

In the second the Yarra girls clicked into gear, with quick ball movement supported by solid defence. They held Belgrave to 8 goals in each of the final 3 quarters, whilst adding 14, 17 and 13 goals respectively to end up convincing winners, 5436 C Grade had a great battle with Belgrave, who sat one spot above Yarra Glen on the ladder. Neither team was able to string together any consistent ball movement. It was a low-scoring struggle with Belgrave holding a 1-goal lead at threequarter time. The last was a thrilling contest with Yarra Glen taking the lead and holding on for a 1 goal victory, 16-15 The best players were Jackie Gardner, Ashley Shanks and Michele Young.

D grade opened the day for Yarra Glen and got away to a solid start to be up 2013 by halftime. Belgrave rallied in the second half to outscore Yarra Glen who struggled to maintain their first-half control. Yarra Glen was able to hang in for an enjoyable return to the winner’s list, 32-29.

Gembrook came back with fight and kicked three for the term to find themselves 1 point up when the siren went, the game finishing 10.14, 74 to 11.7, 73.

Olinda suffers lose

By Frank Seal A dry, windy day in Woori-Yallock saw the Bloods face their second test against the Tigers this year, with Olinda looking to make amends for their 1-point defeat in round one.

New blood was added to the Olinda line-up, as debutant Peter Lucas was presented his jumper and warmly welcomed by the whole team before the match.

After a dismal performance last week against Wandin, the emphasis for the Bloods pregame was on the contested ball and aiming to be harder for longer, an aim that would be put to the test for the next 2 hours.

Kicking with the wind in the opening term, Olinda started well. The midfielders were having an immediate impact at stoppages and getting the forwards involved early. The backs were using the width of the ground well, establishing their defensive wall high up the ground

and taking early intercept marks. Lachy Taylor kicked one early and a boundary line set shot from Jonty Scott gave the Bloods 3 goals in the term. It only took a few contested marks from the tigers, however, to surge the ball forward and run into an open forward line to kick 2 goals themselves.

Woori Yallock had the wind in the second and took advantage by exclusively kicking long and high, feeding their forwards with deep inside 50 entries. Olinda’s defenders were under the pump, conceding contested marks and being forced to rush their rebound 50s. Young gun Noah Desta tried to steady the flow with a skilful snap and goal, but the Tigers were kicking straight. 6 goals for the term ensured a strong Woori Yallock lead at half-time and meant Olinda had work to do.

The third quarter was an even contest with both teams matching each other on the scoreboard; not ideal for the trailing Bloods. A

long-distance set shoot roost from Matt Rosier provided a spark, but with each Olinda effort, a tiger was ready to pounce next. Trailing by five goals and with little time left in the quarter, debutant Pete Lucas stepped up, took two bounces and willed his way to a goal of the year contender on the run, keeping his team in the game in spectacular fashion. With a four-goal game heading into the last, the Bloods were in for a major fourth-quarter fight.

It was a contested battle in the final quarter, and the tigers were well on top. Every groundball scrimmage was crowded in yellow and black, leaving the red and white chasing. Once again the Olinda’s backs were under intense pressure, being forced to win defensive groundballs through charging tigers. The final siren sounded, and the Bloods had been outplayed by a hungrier Woori-Yallock outfit. The scoreboard read 93-58, leaving Olinda at 4-5 for the year and with plenty of room for improvement.

Olinda women’s still missing key players The senior women’s team headed out to Yarra Junction for the second time in 3 weeks to break the ice on the oval at 8:50am.

Still missing a few key players, this week the girls have been working on some structural elements of their game and ball movement. The midfield setup hasn’t been consistent all year, but the girls that set up for the first bounce on Saturday morning had developed a plan to generate clearances and get first use. After also working on forward entries, Junction proved that they were ready for power forward Phoebe Dixon, double and triple-teaming her at every contest. You can’t keep good forwards down though and she still managed to take marks and bring the ball to the ground. Her kicking accuracy didn’t reward her efforts and Olinda went into the first break trailing.

Olinda came to the first change not moving the ball with speed and it showed around the ground. The girls were asked to set up their ball movement from the contest and

with that message, they saw better chains of play with more scoring opportunities in the second quarter. 5 scoring shots to 2 in the second should have seen them break away from a competitive and determined Eagles outfit but wasteful shots again kept the game tight with Olinda’s noses just in front.

After halftime, Junction was able to score and regain the lead as our ball movement fell away. They were also able to congest the forward line so repeated forward entries could not generate scores. It was tough and dour football played on Junction’s terms.

The midfield was able to win the footy at the contest with pocket rockets Claire Hyett and Lily Carlin often winning first use from Amalija Kostich’s excellent tap work.

Emmalee Keegan’s determination and second efforts on the wing and in defence prevented Junction from scoring repeatedly through the third and last quarter. Casey Seymour and Leah Cody continue to prove to be two of the most frugal defenders in

the game. There is no way they will let loose balls past and now rookie hard nut Sophie Caldwell has joined them on their quest to kill opposition forward movement at all costs.

It is also really pleasing to see Laura Clarke and Maddie McCheyne develop their games providing flexibility around the ground for the coaches.

In the end, Junction was able to restrict Olinda’s forward entries from becoming scoring opportunities and despite winning the quarter, Olinda couldn’t kick straight and sneak off with the win. There’s a heap to take away from the match and the players felt that even though it was a disappointing loss, there are elements of our game that are developing that will make them tougher competition against the competition leaders.

On to ladder leaders Upwey this week to see if they can repeat the efforts from earlier in the season.

Juniors take out Lightning Premiership The mighty U10 team travelled out to Wesburn for their lightning premiership on a misty and rainy Sunday morning. The boys and girls braved the conditions and all comers to head into the last game undefeated against the also undefeated Mt Evelyn side. In what would be the clash of the U10 powerhouse clubs, an epic battle loomed. Conditions were tough and Mt Ev took advantage of the downhill end, but couldn’t consolidate on the scoreboard with 3 points to halftime. Coach Ben rallied the team at halftime with some inspirational words about Bloods footy and how we loved the rain and wet conditions and the players came out after halftime with renewed vigour.

An early goal gave the Young Bloods the lead but Mt Ev fought back, peppering the goals but failing to capitalise. A late goal sealed the deal and the Young Bloods ran away with a solid victory, Lightning Premiers! As Coach Ben said after the game, “The whole day was awesome… from our setup to our players and then our parents who are always such great supporters. The players were so proud to be playing for our jumper today”.

Well done Ben and the team - you legends!

The U11s continued their winning ways on Sunday with a strong 79-point win over Wandin. Coach Stuart was really happy with the team’s efforts, especially missing the U10 boys that usually play up. Ollie Wilford, after being crook for the week, was given light duties for the week in the forward line, rather than roaming the middle, and duly snagged a bag of 6 goals.

Jack Ford also managed to kick a couple. They head into the bye with their heads held high.

The U12 Girls headed out to Healesville to test their wares. With some extra training during the week, they were fired up and ready to go. In what was a much more even contest than last time they played, they managed to restrict Healesville to a goal a quarter of the first three quarters. Winners are grinners as the U10s take home the lightning premiership! took a step forward this week with players like Tahlia Dawson, Willow-rose Gordon, Bea Edge and Stella Dunstan having an enormous impact around the ground. Reagan Seamer barely lost a ruck contest all day against her more fancied opponent. Great effort girls!

The U13 boys continued their winning ways having not lost since their re-grading.

Senior player Matt Scharenberg came down at the request of the boys to do running duties for the day, possibly also looking to get amongst a win (sorry Shep - had to). The boys loved having him there, especially the Collingwood fans, and it was great for morale - thanks for helping out Shep. Coach Spida said the boys played really well in an even performance. He swung the magnets around a little to get some players opportunities in new positions and goal scoring was evenly spread amongst the players with 10 goal scorers! Well done boys!

The U15 boys headed out to Healesville to take on the ladder leaders minus 5 of their better, bigger-bodied players. It was always going to be a tough ask but Coach Scotty was happy with their efforts and thinks playing against sides of that calibre will only help them learn and develop their game.

The U16 girls took on Wandin at Wandin in pretty trying conditions and put together their best game of the season so far! Their ball movement was crisp and fast, something Coach Claire has been trying to re-enforce this week, as the girls used space to avoid congestion. They had multiple goal scorers in a really pleasing all round effort, power forward Nikayla Seamer rounding off a good weekend for the Seamer sisters with 2 goals.

The U17 boys also took on Wandin after the girls and they also played really well in trying conditions. The last time these teams met, it was a fiery encounter that was decided in the last kick. This time, however, the Young Blood was able to apply some early scoreboard pressure to get a break. Given the conditions, the game was played at high intensity and with high skill. Quinn Forward shook off a bruising encounter and Ned Ford kicked a bag of 4 in a great game. Isaac Tonkin moved with more freedom than last week and generated play across the ground whilst Luca Smith’s aerial work continues to be high-class. Rylan Kay impressed the coaches as did Liam Smith. The team are starting to really gel as we get to the business end of the season.

Edge of your seat games

By Callum Ludwig Upper Ferntree Gully took on an undermanned Lilydale cohort in tight clashes over the weekend, with only two, one and 10 points separating the sides at the final siren.

The U19.5s kicked off the day’s games at Kings Park, with the Lilydale prevailing 8.9, 57 to 8.7, 55 in a finish that had supporters, officials and players with their hearts in their mouths.

Luke ‘Turkey’ Bates proved turkeys can fly to great heights for a short period of time, climbing high with just over a minute left to take a strong, juggled grab at the half-back flank. Luke Phillips then took off from full-back to provide a switch option but the kick was just too far ahead of him from Turkey, who continued his habit of doing something unreal only to follow up with an error.

Upper Ferntree Gully was able to turn the ball over and hit up no.22 Braidyn Wilson 30 metres out from goal, directly in front. Wilson had proved a smooth operator with 2 goals for the match and everyone was on the edge of their seats.

Fortunately for Lilydale, the kick came off the side of Wilson’s boot and went out of bounds for Lilydale’s ball and the clock ran out of time.

Lachy Baxter (who sits equal third in the league’s leading goalkickers on 22) and Gym Rat Van De Maat each kicked two, while Cooper ‘Backpacks’ Beckwith, Chicken Schnitty, Bull and Callum ‘Articles’ Ludwig each kicked one.

The Lilydale reserves were equally thin on the ground, with a few late outs requiring 5 U19.5s players to double up to supplement the bench, and inaccurate kicking cost them in the end going down by a singular point 5.6, 36 to 4.11, 35.

The occasion did mark the return of the ‘Champ’ Eden Champion who registered for Lilydale in the days leading up to the game to help chip in with numbers and provide another forward and midfield option.

The Twos only had 2 goalkickers for the day with Harry ‘Tiktoks’ Mitchell grabbing a customary 2 goals to leave him on the cusp of the top five goalkickers in the league with his season tally of 15 and Jordan ‘Tubes’ Trollope also snagging a pair, including one from a lovely passage of play down the wing and a selfless handball from Champ.

The Reserves sit above only their opponents Upper Ferntree Gully on the ladder in ninth.

Lilydale took the win in the seniors in some style with a come-from-behind win, with the final score reading 9.6, 57 to 7.5, 47.

It was the forward-50 pressure in the second half and the desire to get the footy inside-50 that helped the Falcons grab the win, with 50 inside-50s to Upper Ferntree Gully’s 30.

The Lilydale seniors climbed three spots to sixth on the ladder, while Upper Ferntree Gully remain at the bottom of the table. mailcommunity.com.au

Terry Miller from Terry Miller Concrete Tanks has been in the concrete tank building business for nearly 30 years. Being from country Victoria himself, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems.

Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because our tanks have 130mm walls and a 300mm base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days of curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo (metal) roof, concrete top or open top tanks.

The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or in fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, you will keep your home cool and wet. Or if need be, you can jump into the tank to keep cool and be protected from flames and radiant heat.
