New brand launch is all smiles The City of Greater Geelong has a new brand – ‘Greater Geelong, Greater Australian Stories’.

The brand is backed by 16 leading local organisations, known collectively as the Vision Partner Group.

The group provides leadership in the implementation of the community-led 30-year vision for the Greater Geelong region to be internationally recognised as clever and creative.

The brand was launched at The Pavilion at Eastern Beach earlier this month.

Greyhound death sparks outrage

By Matt Hewson Advocacy group Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds (CPG) has called for the defunding of the Victorian greyhound racing industry after the death of another dog last weekend at Geelong’s Beckley Park.

“Greyhound racing is cruel and brutal and state governments shouldn’t be using taxpayer funds to support an industry that is harming greyhounds on a massive scale,” CPG director Kylie Field said.

Three-year-old greyhound Ollie fell away from the pack late in the eighth race on Saturday night, only to collapse and ultimately die on the track.

Ms Fields said the death of such a young dog highlighted the need to cut state government

funding to the industry.

“Poor Ollie, although still young, had been forced to run 87 races to generate money,” she said.

“Six other dogs have died at the Geelong track this year. How can a state-subsidised industry continue to inflict dogs with broken legs, necks, spines, and skulls, while it increases prize money and generates gambling revenue?

“The Victorian government has funded the state’s racing industry to the tune of around $250m over the last seven years, with over $30 million going to greyhound racing.

“Victorian greyhound racing has a multitude of problems. There’s no transparency in death and injury data, a rehoming crisis is emerging, the greyhound tracking system is flawed, racing frequency is concerning stewards, and

taxpayer-funded track safety upgrades aren’t making the tracks safer.”

Ollie was the seventh greyhound to die at Beckley Park this year, making the Geelong track the deadliest in the country, followed by Ipswich, Queensland, with five deaths.

Ms Fields said the track should host no further race meets until a review was held to assess its safety for greyhounds.

“Geelong is obviously a dangerous track and racing should be stopped while an independent safety review is launched,” Ms Fields said.

“Racing had been stopped at Traralgon and is still cancelled at Cranbourne after greyhound deaths, and Geelong has to be closed as well.”

Twenty-three dogs have died on Victorian racetracks so far this year, while 70 greyhounds have died nationwide.

The CPG said that many of these deaths were the result of non-life-threatening injuries, where owners decided to euthanise a greyhound rather than pay for treatment for an animal that might no longer be profitable.

Western Victorian MP and Animal Justice Party member Andy Meddick said the deaths of these animals were senseless and unnecessary.

“This is an industry that is replete with problems,” he said.

“They receive millions in government subsidies to market themselves as a family friendly sport. The public are sick of seeing animals killed.”

Greyhound Racing Victoria were contacted for comment.

COVID-19 film fest designed to heal A short-film festival that explores the human toll of COVID-19 will be shown in Geelong.

Covideo Twenty21 features the lives of the young filmmakers throughout COVID and the psychological damage it caused.

Filmmaker and festival director Kuranda Seyit said it was a chance to “kiss COVID goodbye”.

“I am hoping that this event will be symbolic for many of us and it will be a cathartic experience as well, as we look back at the last two years of our life that we lost to COVID,” he said.

Seyit said the film festival is not only about collective healing but also about supporting emerging artists.

One of the artists to exhibit at the festival is young Filmmaker Josiah Saxby, who made a haunting film about mental health during the lockdown titled, ‘The End of Myself’.

“Lockdown left everyone feeling like they were doing life entirely on their own, so I made this film to make the audience feel less alone,” he said.

“I wanted to make a film that was honest about the mental health toll of COVID and unite everyone - in our collective struggle.”

The night will feature many more short films, guest speakers, performers and comedians and a panel of industry judges.

“We have an amazing selection of films made by local filmmakers,” Seyit said.

“And you will be entertained by comedians Fat and Ginger (Tim Young and Luke Massey), blown away by the magical spoken words of artists, Tim Evans and Rania Ahmed plus a musical intermission.

“There are lucky door prizes, so you have a chance to win some fantastic prizes, and the audience gets to vote for their favourite film.”

Police have charged 15 bailed offenders with around 100 offences during a three-night bail compliance operation.

Detectives from Geelong Tasking and Crime Intervention Taskforce (TACIT), with support from the Youth Tasking Unit, Highway Patrol, Crime Investigation Unit and uniform officers, patrolled several known crime hotspots between Thursday, June 2 and Saturday, June 4 to detect criminal behaviour and recidivist offenders.

As part of the operation, police also conducted 38 bail compliance checks to ensure bailed offenders were observing their bail conditions.

Among those arrested during the operation was a 37-year-old Breakwater man who was charged with 12 offences including theft from motor vehicle, evading police and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

He was remanded to face Geelong Magistrates Court on July 3.

A 26-year-old Corio man was charged with 14 offences including theft from motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, obtaining property by deception, and committing an indictable offence while on bail. He pleaded guilty before the Geelong Magistrates Court on June 7 and received a 15-month Community Corrections Order.

“As people continue to move around the community more freely than previous years, there has naturally been more opportunities for offenders to breach their bail conditions,” Geelong crime investigation unit Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Guthrie said.

“However, police have remained one step ahead, ramping up our proactive approach to offender management through routine patrols of known crime hotspots and regular checks of offenders on bail.”

Geelong chosen for TAC trial to empower young drivers Geelong has been chosen as one of two locations for a trial program run by the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).

The state government trial will help young Victorians overcome barriers in accessing a safe vehicle, while also collecting critical data to help drivers learn how to be safer on the road.

The TAC is contributing $50,000 for the pilot program led by Empowr Mobility, a social enterprise that aims to improve access to safe vehicles, while developing safe driving

behaviours and habits.

For the trial, Empowr has joined forces with organisations in regional hotspots Geelong and Shepparton to provide four young drivers access to a safe and fit-for-purpose vehicle.

Ganbina, an indigenous school-to-work transition program, will trial the program in Shepparton, while in Geelong, major regional employer Barwon Water will support the program through its progressive trainee program.

The vehicles for the trial, provided by IAG

(Insurance Australia Group), have been fitted with telematics to collect driving data.

Participants will use Empowr’s CAR[A] app, which will collect the data and provide real-time insights to help drivers learn how to be safer on the road.

Participants will have access to the vehicle for the duration of the three-month trial, improving their ability to connect with their local communities through work, education, and social opportunities.

“We know that safe vehicles are among our

most powerful tools in reducing road trauma and we will continue looking for ways to help people access them,” TAC chief executive Joe Calafiore said. “The TAC is proud to support this trial that will not only have road safety benefits for the participants but also improve their social and community connection, as well as access to work and education.”

An evaluation will be conducted at the end of the pilot period to determine whether the program will be extended, and how to grow organisational participation.

New park enhances Green Spine A new public park and artworks have been unveiled in Armstrong Creek.

The park is the centre of its 94 hectare ‘Harriott’ master planned community by property and investments business Jinding.

Jinding executive director Jay Song and developments general manager Simon Howell were joined on June 22 by the City of Greater Geelong’s city works, parks and gardens portfolio chair, councillor Anthony Aitken, to officially open the 11,104 square metre

‘Green Spine’ park built by HL Landscapes at the heart of Harriott and reveal the public art installation.

The public art installation, designed by master fabricators Lump Sculpture Studio and landscape architects Spiire, is reminiscent of the curlew sandpiper – a homage to the bird species which frequents the area’s surrounding wetlands.

The Green Spine arterial, which runs through the centre of Harriott, features a 670-metre fitness circuit shaded by canopies

of lush greenery, interconnected walkways, sprawling lawns, secluded spaces for yoga and meditation, an Autumn Lawn and Urban Forrest with varied plantings, as well as larger areas suitable for local markets and community events.

The neighbouring Sparrovale Wetlands has also been incorporated into Harriott’s masterplan – an off-shoot of the nationally significant 500 hectare Lake Connewarre Wetland System that will protect native flora and fauna, as well as bring every new home

in the master planned community just 200 metres from nature.

“This is an exciting milestone that marks the progression of the project to the next stage and underscores our commitment to create housing projects that make a positive contribution to their surrounding environment,” Mr Howell said.

“The Green Spine will play an important role fostering an authentic sense of community for Harriott and adds another green layer to the region.”

Jan Juc offers save haven from war Helen Chernonok arrived in Australia from war-torn Ukraine only two months ago.

Helen has settled in Jan Juc after leaving Kyiv and has been supported by the Ukrainian Community in Geelong and Cultura.

As part of World Refugee Day on June 20, the City of Greater Geelong celebrated the day as part of Refugee Week, which runs until Saturday,June 25.

World Refugee Day and Refugee Week aim to educate Australians on the many reasons refugees leave their homes and celebrate their successes in their new countries. The theme for this year’s Refugee Week is ‘Healing’, which highlights the importance of how we can learn from shared experiences of hardship and heal as a community as we move forward.

Helen said although her experience has been challenging, she is grateful for the help she has received.

“I’m really grateful that I can live here in safety,” she said.

“It’s also a huge change for me because I was successful and independent back home. But here, I have to rely on other people’s kindness.

“I live in a beautiful area, by the beach.

It really helps me to go to the beach and sit, sometimes for hours, and just watch the waves.”

The City of Greater Geelong has been recognised as a ‘Refugee Welcome Zone’ since 2002, and the Multicultural Action Plan Advisory Committee supports and guides Council to deliver inclusive programs and initiatives to the refugee community.

Another of this year’s projects is a short, animated film, which is a collaboration with Bluebird Foundation, Wellways, Western Victoria Primary Health Network, Cultura and the City of Greater Geelong.

The film features the perspectives of young people with refugee backgrounds on what mental health is and how mental health support services can better reach diverse cultural groups.

The group – all from the Geelong region – has used their own words, voices and artworks in the animated film, which has also been translated into Arabic, Dari, Karen, Swahili and Tamil.

Geelong could have a permanent rainbow crossing in the CBD that celebrates the city’s LGBTQIA+ communities.

Council is inviting community feedback on the proposal on the “new, eye-catching addition to Geelong’s streetscape”.

The city said the crossing would acknowledge diversity and inclusivity in a fun and colourful way that also serves a practical purpose as a road crossing.

Several potential locations have been identified based on feedback received from the Geelong rainbow community, while safety and visual appeal have also been taken into account.

While some of the crossings under consideration have traffic lights others are simply zebra crossings.

The crossing locations under consideration are: • Malop Street crossing - between Market Square and Westfield (traffic lights) • Yarra Street underpass pedestrian crossing (traffic lights) • Malop Street crossing – near Clare Street (traffic lights) • Fenwick Street pedestrian crossing – near Johnstone Park (zebra crossing) • Western Beach Road pedestrian crossing – opposite The Novotel (zebra crossing) • Western Beach Road pedestrian crossing – opposite Cunningham Pier (zebra crossing) • Gheringhap Street pedestrian crossing – opposite Deakin (zebra crossing) Councillor Sarah Mansfield, diversity, inclusion and LGBTIQ+ portfolio chair, welcomed the initiative as a positive step forward.

“The planned crossing will be a vibrant and colourful representation of our region’s support of the local rainbow community and continue to celebrate its local LGBTQIA+ communities,” Cr Mansfield said.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, much of last year’s festival was held online, with a small number being held in person and with a reduced capacity. Despite this shift, the festival still provided an important boost to our small business community and was attended by almost 700 people.

Ken is a senior with a lot to give

By Matt Hewson For 65 years, 2021 Victoria Senior Achiever award-winner Ken Mansfield has worked tirelessly for the Highton and broader Geelong communities, and despite receiving various accolades for his contributions he remains humble about his accomplishments.

Mr Mansfield has participated in various community organisations such as Rotary for over 65 years, been involved in founding and supporting events such as the Barwon Banks fun run and the Pier to Pub swim at Lorne for over 40 years, raised money for charities by walking and riding the length and breadth of Australia, and walked the Kokoda Trail at age 70.

Last year Mr Mansfield received a Council on the Ageing Victoria Senior Achiever award, and he encouraged people to consider nominating someone for this year’s awards.

“I did these things, sure, because it gave me satisfaction to make a contribution to the community, and I feel very fortunate to receive such recognition,” he said.

“But there are a lot of folks out there who have done a lot more than I have that have not been recognised for it.

“The thought of some of those people getting some recognition, it’s important.

“My wife, Shiela, for example, she should be recognised a lot more than me for the activities she’s undertaken.”

One of the contributions Mr Mansfield remembers most proudly was the Young Achievers, which he and the Rotary Club

of Highton set up in the 1970s, and for his involvement in the program he received Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship.

“The Young Achievers was one of the most significant things I felt we accomplished,” he said. “We took senior students from Belmont High School and helped them understand what business was about. We gave them business roles and a gave them responsibility for making, selling, and making something out of a product.

“And some of those young adults went on to start their own businesses, which was really satisfying from our point of view.

“We felt we’d made a real contribution to the future of our community.”

Mr Mansfield still maintains an active role in Rotary to this day, and is currently involved with a project to dismantle Geelong playgrounds and send them elsewhere in the world for use by other communities.

“The City of Geelong council thought that some playgrounds around the city needed to be removed and replaced with safer, more up-to-date ones,” he said.

“So we undertook to dismantle the playgrounds and have them sent overseas to countries such as Fiji, Sri Lanka, and Timor, where there were, and will be, reassembled.

“If they hadn’t gone there they would have been dumped in landfill around here, so it’s very satisfying to see those going overseas and being put to good purpose.”

Ken said he and his wife believed strongly about the values of community and family.

“It’s very important to us to do these things,” he said.

“We want to make sure we can build a strong family and a strong community. We want to pass these values on, and if these awards help to do that, I think that’s important.”

The Breakwater Road intersection on Barwon Heads Road will be closed for upgrade works until 6am Monday 11 July.

Appointments for Torquay Lions Club’s free skin checks were filled within days of going online, president Neil Roche said.

Torquay Lions Skin Check and Awareness mobile unit will offer free checks on July 1 and 2, but appointments have been filled.

“The Lions Skin Check and Awareness Mobile Unit will be in Torquay during the first week of July, but appointments for checks were closed days ago,” Mr Roche said.

“Bookings opened on June 6, and all time slots had been filled well before mid-June. Our recorded phone message now suggests callers visit their GP to have a check.

“There is an obvious need for many more opportunities for people to have a free skin check in Torquay.

“Our Lions Mobile Unit is hard-pressed to meet the need in various towns in regional Victoria, but we are aiming to bring the mobile

unit back to town as soon as we are able.”

The van will provide a free skin screening service to local people who have made appointments, and will be operated by fully trained, certificated and professionally supervised volunteers.

Torquay Lions appointments manager Alan Murphy said it became obvious very early that Torquay’s need for free skin checks was urgent.

“So many people told me that this was a wonderful initiative of Lions, but it was a pity that we couldn’t provide more time for more appointments,” he said. “It became clear when I had to cut off appointments that there is a great demand for free checks to get people talking with their GP if there are any suspect spots or lesions discovered during the check.

“The first free check seems to be the secret to informing people with valuable and timely data about skin care and self-checking techniques.

It’s been a whirlwind since I was elected Greater Geelong mayor.

I’m thankful for the support of my fellow councillors last Friday, but most of all, the overwhelming positive response from the community following my appointment.

I am honoured to have this opportunity to serve the region as mayor.

This position is such a contrast from my beginnings in Geelong, when I arrived as a 19-year-old from Port Fairy in 1980 without knowing a soul.

I found friends and mentors quickly, through working in banking and at Victoria Police, and through volunteering.

It’s been a privilege to be involved with St Mary’s Football Club, Newtown and Geelong Amateur, become president of the Geelong Racing Club and have a long involvement with the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club as past president.

I am proud to be an Active Geelong ambassador and am a strong supporter of the Barwon Health Foundation.

I’m also an active member of The Man Walk and Right Mate committee, which both support men’s mental health – an issue which doesn’t get the coverage it deserves.

I’m lucky to have met many great locals of all backgrounds, who’ve taught me the region’s biggest strength is our people.

I love getting out and I can’t wait to continue meeting and listening to more community members during my term.

A week in, I’ve been eagerly meeting with stakeholders across the city.

I’m focused on ensuring Geelong is set up for success, supported by effective and collaborative working relationships with all levels of government.

I plan to meet with our state MPs soon so they can get to know me and what I stand for as an independent and work together to achieve the best outcomes.

Stronger bonds will also support preparations for the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

The Games offer countless opportunities for our region.

I’ll make it clear that we’re embracing this

chance to showcase regional Victoria to the world.

An important moment coming up will be the endorsement of the 2022-23 budget at next week’s council meeting.

This will kick off our capital works program for footpaths, libraries, environmental programs, community hubs and more.

A new 10-year Asset Plan will also come before us, proposing to increase funding to improve ageing infrastructure.

This reflects our commitment to delivering quality facilities to everyone, regardless of where you live.

I thank everyone who made a submission about our financial plans.

The Landy Field development is high on my priority list, with planning under way to ensure it’s a centre of excellence for athletics that is inclusive of everyone.

As is ensuring that Eastern Beach remains a jewel in Geelong’s crown with a review of the Conservation Management Plan and strong advocacy for funding of a Regional Indoor Sports and Events Centre.

I know my term is for a short period, but I see this as an opportune time to make positive change.

We have a great group of councillors who are incredibly passionate and know the communities in their wards at a deep level.

I’m looking forward to working with them, and I am pleased to be able to connect with readers of the Geelong Indy through this new column.

It is worth looking past the headlines and seeing that we are doing well as a region and the future looks bright.

As your mayor, I promise to make tangible change so that Greater Geelong is an even better place to live.

I won’t take this opportunity for granted.

Radioplays given modern revival

By Matt Hewson Geelong raidoplay festival Theatia Podsie is a tribute to the “lost art of radioplays”, according to festival director Jo Lusty.

Produced for the first time this year by Lusty’s Someone New Theatre Company, the festival will run over two sessions this weekend at Eastern Hub Geelong.

“The best way to put it is that Theatia Podsie is a love letter to those old radio dramas, and the way they used to create and distribute them,” Lusty said.

“We’re taking plays that would normally be put onstage and creating visuals in the mind of the audience members through sound.

“Of course, we don’t go in like they used to and create thunder with corrugated iron.

We have access to the internet now, so we can get actual recordings of the sounds we want.”

The festival, in its fourth year, also seeks to make plays accessible to those who might not be able to otherwise view theatre.

“People may not be able to make it to live theatre for health reasons, or because of distance or all those things that kept us apart during the pandemic,” Lusty said.

“It’s also for people who can’t view theatre because they’re visually impaired, so it’s about accessibility. It’s about creating soundscapes instead of landscapes.

“So instead of having sets that recreate the Australian bush, for example, we create that with the sounds of cicadas and wind going through the trees to produce that sense of space without being in, or being able to see, that space.”

The festival features two plays by Victorian playwrights, ‘like me’ by Glenn Saunders and ’Turbulence’ by Megan J Reidl, which focus on common human experiences such as death, truth, love and friendship.

“They deal with a lot of universal themes.

There are definitely some very relatable moments in both of the plays,” Lusty said.

Someone New has been involved with the festival in previous years as a creative contributor, producing plays for the festival, and Lusty said the theatre company was thrilled to have the chance to facilitate the festival in its entirety.

“We’ve been really lucky to receive an arts, heritage and culture grant from the City of Greater Geelong council,” she said.

“Last year the festival was all run online because of lockdowns, but it was meant to include live readings as well as being put on podcast and radio services.

“But thankfully the grant has meant we can do the live reading aspect as well. It’s such a boost after COVID.” Lusty is a co-founder of Someone New, which she and a group of like-minded creatives formed at the end of 2018.

“Someone New had just started getting off the ground when COVID hit, so we focused on doing some podcast stories ourselves,” she said.

“We did a podcast version of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes that was done completely online with actors from all over Australia, which was really cool.

“Some of the voice actors recorded in the back of their cupboard, some set up big old pillow forts to record in.

“That’s up on Spotify now, and we did a few smaller podcasts as well, but honestly, we’re really happy to be able to see audiences again in person.”

Builder urges councils to rethink tiny homes

Amid rising interest rates and the rising issue of housing affordability, a Victorian tiny homes builder has called for councils to consider relaxing restrictions around tiny homes.

According to an unpublished survey of 146 tiny house owners in 2021 by the Shearer, Burton & Australian Tiny House Association, 17.1 per cent of the owners were from suburban major cities.

Mr Todd, who owns NJ Tiny Homes, is hoping that council’s can ease residency restrictions associated with tiny homes as he says council’s typically don’t approve them for use as permanent or long-term homes.

Periods of permitted occupancy can be for up to three months, depending on the council.

“Councils need to consider easing restrictions on tiny homes as the housing crisis takes another turn for the worse with the recent rise in interest rates,“ Mr Todd said.

“Standard houses continue to remain unaffordable and more needs to be done to address the housing affordability crisis.

“Councils can play their part by enabling residents to permanently call their tiny houses ’home’ and removing the barriers associated with living in them.

“The property landscape in Australia has changed and as the housing crisis worsens, we need to be able to adapt and perceive tiny homes as an alternative and affordable, permanent housing option.”

Mr Todd also said the cost of tiny homes makes living a lot more affordable for people.

“If someone had a property or land already, the tiny house would cost around $115,000,” he said.

“It’s all pre-fabricated and built in a factory in five weeks – compared to six to eight months with a traditional build.”

to support clever and creative solutions to increasing housing diversity and affordability.

“The tiny house movement can utilise existing suburban backyards, and is often cited as a solution to increasing urban density without impacting on neighbourhood character,” he said.

Mr Smith said council does not have any formal endorsed position on tiny homes.

A weekend for giving Barwon Health Foundation’s annual Giving Weekend festivities have returned with a bang.

Artist colours her creative world Ocean Grove artist Morgan Jamieson is starting to make a name for herself. She talks to Justin Flynn.

M

organ Jamieson grew up in Geelong, but has called Ocean Grove home for the past 14 years.

She has a strong connection to her native surroundings and was always artistic as a child.

“I was always exploring art or drawing or painting as a little kid and then it progressed through high school and it was a path I chose when we started to pick subjects,” she says.

“I always used clothing and make-up and in hindsight that’s how I expressed myself creatively. I’ve always loved colour.”

After school Morgan did a bachelor of visual arts majoring in graphic design.

“There wasn’t really anyone I knew who was making a business out of being a paid artist,” she says. “The push was to do fine art and then teach or do graphic design so you could actually have a job.

“Since I graduated in 2006 it’s come a long way. There are lots of people making really good business out of being an artist.”

Morgan worked for a boutique design agency in Geelong for 13 years and said she learnt everything about being able to run a business.

“Towards the end I was doing a lot of artwork on the side and my day job was more corporate design and I was doing my super-creative stuff on the side at home,” she says. “Then my side work started to get busier and I had babies so I made the decision that I couldn’t do all three things - maintain my job, continue my side work and look after my family.

“By that stage I had built up a bit of a following so I resigned and here I am.”

Morgan says these days with social media, it’s much easier to get your work out there, but she still uses her graphic design skills designing new logos for companies.

“That was always my fall back,” she says.

“I thought at least I have that if the artwork doesn’t bring in as much income.”

Morgan pauses when asked about her individual style.

“It takes a while to figure out your style,” she says. “Even though I’ve made some changes along the way I still think there are elements of your style that you always go back to.

“My work is not perfect, it’s a little bit experimental. It’s quite contrasty and bold and sometimes a bit heavy.

“A lot of people who bought my work in the early days bought it because they liked the colour and the boldness and the brightness could bring something into their house.

“I’ve noticed during the last 12 months people are after more muted artwork.

“I kept finding people wanted me to go back to the old colour pallets, the vibrant pinks, the duck-egg blues, the bright-chartreuse greens.”

Morgan says regularity in her work means she doesn’t often get ‘painter’s block’.

“Back in the day when I was working, I might paint on a Saturday and then not be able to paint again until the following Saturday whereas now I’m doing it every day and it’s easier to flick that switch off and on,” she says.

However, Morgan isn’t adverse to returning to a piece of work multiple times.

“Sometimes on social media I film time lapses when I’m painting and when I watch it

back I’m the most sporadic person,” she says.

“I’ll start down the bottom left and then I’ll move up to another random section and then somewhere else none of it comes together until the very end.

“I didn’t realise that’s how I worked until I rewatched myself working, which was interesting.” Away from work, Morgan says she loves taking the kids to the beach, exercising and cooking.

“If it’s summer we’ll spend a lot of time at the beach with the kids and a lot of time in the kitchen cooking and we love travelling,” she says.

Green achievers recognised for their innovation Waste Reduction Award

Volunteers behind transformative renewable energy projects are among the recipients of the annual Community Green Achiever Awards.

The awards program was established by Council last year to recognise community-led action that promotes sustainability, supports biodiversity and protects our environment.

Deputy mayor Trent Sullivan said the awards celebrated innovations in the areas of climate change, renewable energy, circular living and biodiversity restoration.

“The awards highlight the incredible array of residents and groups who are committed to creating a sustainable future and encouraging others to embrace positive change,” he said.

“There is a lot of great work being done at a local level that council is proud to support and showcase.”

Geelong Sustainability – Geelong Circular Living Show Geelong Sustainability delivered the Geelong Circular Living Show and Electric Vehicle Show ‘n’ Shine event, to raise awareness about circular living and sustainability opportunities.

More than 1200 people attended the interactive and informative event, with 35 exhibitors on hand to demonstrate products and services that can be used to reduce your environmental footprint.

It is part of Geelong Sustainability’s commitment to host engaging and informative events to help residents engage with circular living programs and products.

“They are informing and inspiring the community by showcasing solutions and highlighting how people can make positive changes in their lives,” Cr Moloney said.

Climate Action Award (joint winner) Dan Cowdell – Geelong Community Solar Program Dan Cowdell led a team that developed and delivered a community bulk buy program to support our region’s transition to renewable energy.

The program leveraged large scale buying power to help local households and businesses purchase rooftop solar systems, battery storage systems and hot water systems.

It resulted in the purchase of 96 rooftop solar systems, 49 battery storage systems and 10 heat pump hot water systems. This equates to 966kW of solar electricity generating capacity and 424kWh of battery storage.

For each solar system sold, a donation was made to support solar installations on community facilities.

This saw six solar systems, with the capacity to generate a total of 100kW of cost-free electricity, installed on community-managed facilities across the region.

It is projected that greenhouse emissions will be reduced by 1178.3 tonnes a year as a direct result of the program.

“Dan has made an extremely significant contribution to community education and sustainability initiatives in our region, lending his skills and knowledge toward bettering our region through his tireless efforts,” Councillor Belinda Moloney, chair of the climate change action portfolio said. “Absolute legend.”

Climate Action Award (joint winner) Steve Turnock and Megan Discher –Barwon South-West Community Power Hub Steve and Megan led a team that developed the Community Power Hub program, to support the delivery of community-owned renewable energy projects.

The program installed a 60.3kW rooftop solar system on the YMCA stadium in Newtown.

It is expected to generate around 190 kWh of emissions-free electricity daily, and save the YMCA about $13,000 a year on its power bills.

The project was funded by the Community Energy Revolving Fund, which provided an interest-free loan to the YMCA. As this loan is repaid the available funds will be used to support other community projects that reduce carbon emissions.

“Steve and Megan’s tireless work has made it easier and more affordable for local organisations to make the transition to renewable energy,” Cr Moloney said.

“The pay-it-forward funding model presents a great opportunity for the benefits of the program to be shared.”

Biodiversity Protection Award Friends of the Bellarine Rail Trail –Bellarine Rail Trail Environmental Restoration The Friends of the Bellarine Rail Trail are an active volunteer group that undertake regular works to improve the social and environmental values of the Bellarine Rail Trail reserve between Geelong and Drysdale.

The group manage weed outbreaks, undertake maintenance works and plant indigenous species (propagated from seeds sourced from the site) along 17 kilometres of the Bellarine Rail Trail.

Over many years, they have contributed more than 20,000 volunteer hours and planted more than 80,000 indigenous plants, helping to create a critical habitat corridor.

“The group has shown a significant commitment to improving the environmental and the recreational values of the Bellarine Rail Trail over a long period of time,” councillor Jim Mason, environment portfolio chair, said.

Adventure beckons at Winter Glow Discover a glowing winter wonderland of snow, lights, fire and ice at Adventure Park’s Winter Glow these June-July school holidays!

The Winter Glow Festival sold out every day in its initial year in 2021 and is expected to be as popular in 2022, with a bigger snow play zone and a new magical snow flurry experience that simulates snow falling from the sky.

“We’ve invested in new rides, more snow-making machines, and we’re super excited to be launching a snow flurry experience with realistic snow made from frozen water,” Adventure Park managing director Leanne Salmon says.

Two new rides for the festival include a brand new Air Balloons ride and the classic Tea Cups ride, which add to six other dry rides and

mini-golf included in the admission price.

See live ice-sculpting and fire-twirling displays, plus 2.7 million dazzling lights and hundreds of glittering installations all over the park. Face painting, cookie decorating and marshmallow roasting over an open fire will be back, along with yummy flavoured hot chocolates, spiced cider and mulled wine for parents to warm up.

“The Winter Glow is about brightening up the winter months and giving kids and families something to look forward to,” Ms Salmon says.

Brilliant new look unveiled for Laserquest Geelong Laserquest Geelong has re-opened with a new look. The venue has been a mainstay for entertainment in Geelong since 1995, and has undergone a transformation with customers loving the new centre.

Some of the new features include a new party space, six short lane Ten-pin bowling lanes (set to open in early July) and a prize shop, where guests get to walk through at their own pace, choosing their prizes.

As part of the work, the Laserquest team has focused on ‘going green’, installing over 150 solar panels as well as updating to a new energy efficient climate system.

The team’s new uniforms are made from recycled plastic bottles and staff are encouraging guests to recycle their Play Cards.

In the next few months, things will be even greener when guests will be able to ditch the plastic card and load their Laserquest Play Card to their phone’s mobile wallet.

Owner Sebastian Loader is excited about the new look venue and the public’s response to the work.

“Whilst the new store looks great, it was really important to us that any changes we made improved the experience for our guests and I think we’ve managed to achieve that,” Sebastian says.

“We’ve added over 15 new arcade games and upgraded our laser tag equipment to the newest Laserforce Gen8 packs; adding these together with our new QubicaAMF bowling lanes means we really do offer our guests the latest and greatest in family entertainment fun.”

Rock and roll when the kids drive you up the wall There are days during the school holidays where the kids are getting bored, and start to climb the walls, or even start to drive you up the wall.

Keep your children busy and the planet happy With the next round of school holidays quickly approaching, many parents and guardians may be scratching their heads trying to think of activities to keep their kids occupied.

Read on to find out a few fun ideas to keep the kids busy in a sustainable way: • Make your own backyard games: rather than buying new toys for the holidays, use a few common household items to create some fun games. For example, find empty plastic bottles, paint them white with red stripes and use tennis balls to make your own pin bowling set.

• Go on an insect scavenger hunt: create a checklist of insect pictures of the bugs and other critters found in your backyard. Go

outside with the kids and a magnifying glass and teach them about the little beasties around your home.

• Build a little veggie garden. Pick up a small garden bed from your local hardware store, along with enough bags of soil, manure and other products to fill it. Plant some easy veggie seedlings and use some icy pole sticks to write the name of the plants in the garden.

Not only will these activities keep your kids entertained and happy for some time over the holidays, they will also benefit the planet.

The King bans all spinning wheels so no harm will come to his daughter. What happens to Rose, the lovely princess, when she turns 16?

Will she prick her finger, and if so, how?

Will the not so nice fairy succeed in

Catch Edward and Edwina The Geelong Arts Centre is welcoming a much-loved classic to its 2022 Family Magic Program, with ‘Edward the Emu’ coming from page to stage at Costa Hall on July 29 and 30.

Brought to Geelong by the award-winning Monkey Baa Theatre Company, ‘Edward the Emu’ is a combined tale of both Edwina the Emu and Edward the Emu, based on the funny and heartfelt books by Sheena Knowles and Rod Clement.

Follow the emu pair’s adventure as they navigate existential crises and dodge their zookeepers along the way. Adapted by Eva Di Cesare, the 50-minute show features an award-winning set, inventive storytelling, world-class puppetry and an original score.

‘Edward the Emu’ is suitable for children aged between four and 10, along with their adults. Performances are set for Friday, July 29 at 6.30pm and Saturday, July 30 at noon and 2.30pm, with the noon show a Relaxed Performance with an Auslan Interpreter.

Relaxed Performances welcome audiences who would benefit from a more relaxed environment – this can include but is not limited to people with autism, sensory sensitivities, learning disabilities or dementia, as well as those living with anxiety or who have experienced trauma.

The atmosphere of these performances is non-judgemental and noisy enthusiasm is embraced.

Audience members are also welcome to bring headphones to reduce noise if they wish. With dimmed lights, open auditorium doors and moderated technical elements such as sound effects and strong lighting, while keeping the beloved story of Edward and Edwina the Emu completely unchanged.

In a storytime dance workshop with the Australian Ballet, ‘Dancing Story’ gives children the unique opportunity to explore ‘The Story of Pomi and Gobba’ through dance.

With four age groups for your kids, each group will have the opportunity to watch a free performance these holidays, as well as joining a fun and inclusive dance workshop.

Supporting confidence, resilience and teamwork skills in individuals of all ages, skill levels and physical abilities, no previous experience is required for young kids, while teens are recommended to have a small amount of experience.

Children should wear comfortable clothing for movement, wear bare feet or dance shoes, bring a water bottle, and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Doom metal with a twist

By Matt Hewson Dirty Pagans frontman Matty Dee can’t wait to share his band’s unique take on doom metal with the Barwon Club crowd on Friday, June 24.

“Metalheads are absolutely, completely dedicated,” Dee said. “Wherever you go in the country, or in the world, they’re going to come out in force and bang their heads.

“It’s awesome to play in front of people that give you everything, and there’s no excuse for you not to give everything also.”

The band, composed of bassist James Russo, drummer Jarrad Taylor, guitarist Greg Challis and frontman Dee, takes inspiration from metal bands both classic and contemporary.

The Barwon Club gig will showcase material from Dirty Pagans’ latest album, ‘The Family’, a nine-track suite with a solid core of doom overlayed with tinges of alternative metal and heavy metal.

The band recorded most of ‘The Family’ in 2019, completing it in early 2020 and expecting to release it the same year, but like many other creative projects the album was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We made the decision not to release it then,” Dee said. “We didn’t want it to get lost, essentially. We wanted to tour the show.

“So we held off for a bit, and COVID just kept going and going, so for pretty much two years we didn’t get to play.”

The band finally released the album last year and have been promoting it ever since, as far as lockdowns and restrictions have allowed.

A notable point of difference between Dirty Pagans and most other doom bands are the high-pitched vocals of both Dee and Challis, at times reminiscent of classic metal singers such as Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) and Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant.

Dee believes he and Challis’ vocal styles contribute to the band’s individual style.

“In the genre of doom the vocals are usually quite low,” he said.

“So I think our vocals separate us. I haven’t heard anyone putting that kind of spin on doom riffs, so I think we bring something different.”

Dee played down his role in the band, praising his bandmates’ musical abilities.

“I’m just the mouth from the south, surrounded by exceptional talent,” he said.

“The boys in the band are the business, I’m lucky to play with them. Everyone always enjoys the music and I get to be the front man, which is always fun.

“If people want to come down Friday night and see some sweet riff and roll, hear some high vocals and bang their heads we’d love to see them and say hi.”

The band will be joined at the Barwon Club Friday night by fellow riffers Dysphoriac, Ivy Black, and Small Lizard Big Brain. Doors open at 7pm.

The Chairman of the Board, Frank Sinatra, and America’s sweetheart crooner, Bobby Darin, will be celebrated in ‘Let’s Be Frank – Bobby Darrin Tribute’ at the Potato Shed on July 30 at 8pm.

Arguably the greatest singer of all time, Frank Sinatra’s hit list will be brought to life by Steven Zammitt.

One of Johnny Young’s favourite stars of Young Talent Time, Zammitt has curated this special tribute to the great crooner, with songs such as ‘My Way’; ‘Fly me to the Moon’; ‘New York, New York’; ‘Come Fly with Me’; and ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’.

Do your due diligence and be wary of false tax agents This tax time, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) is warning taxpayers to keep an eye out for people posing as tax agents who are not registered with the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB).

Assistant commissioner Karen Foat is concerned about a number of people claiming to be tax agents, often promising refunds that sound too good to be true, or providing discounted services much cheaper than legitimate registered tax agents.

“These unregistered preparers pose a threat to vulnerable taxpayers and risk the reputation of registered tax agents” Ms Foat said.

“They pretend to offer legitimate services to the community, but in reality they pose a serious threat not only to the people that use them, but to the broader community and the tax system as a whole.

“Unfortunately, we see too many instances where people have unwittingly used an unregistered preparer, which has resulted in a significant tax debt and loss of money. We also see instances where people do not receive their refund, or where fraudulent claims are lodged in their name without their knowledge.”

Unregistered preparers often use a taxpayer’s personal login details to access their ATO Online account through myGov to lodge tax returns. A legitimate tax practitioner will never ask for your myGov credentials – they use dedicated ATO online services to lodge returns for their clients.

The ATO is working closely with the TPB, as well as law enforcement agencies throughout Australia, to identify and put a stop to unregistered preparers.

“To protect yourself and keep your personal information safe, it is important to check with the TPB to see if an agent is registered. You

Check your income details before you see your agent The Australian Taxation Office is urging people to make sure their income details are complete and finalised before seeing their chosen tax agent.

For most Australians, income statements have replaced payment summaries.

This means that instead of receiving a payment summary from their employer, most people’s income statements will be finalised electronically, and the information provided directly to the ATO.

You can view your income statement through myGov and the information from it is automatically included in your return in myTax by the ATO. If you use a tax agent, they will also have access to this information.

Income statements show their year-to-date salary and wages, PAYG withholding tax, and any employer super contributions in near real-time, but it is important to wait until it is finalised before lodging a tax return.

Employers have until July 31 to finalise income statements.

“We often see people too eager to get a tax refund making obvious mistakes, which can either delay processing the tax return or result in a bill later on,” ATO assistant commissioner Karen Foat said.

“It’s important to check that your employer has finalised the information in your income statement and it is marked as ‘tax ready’ before you lodge.

“Other information from banks, health funds and government agencies will also be automatically inserted into your tax return.

For most people this will happen by the end of July.

“Lodging once we have included all of your information in your tax return makes it even easier, but if you are lodging before then, make sure the information provided is complete, accurate, and up to date to avoid delays or a debt later on,” Ms Foat said.

Subaru’s ‘Rex’ won’t disappoint

By Ewan Kennedy, Marque Motoring Subaru WRX, often tagged as the “Rex”, is high-performance machine that’s been a longtime favourite with Australian drivers since it first arrived Downunder in 1994. The latest model is offered as a sedan and station wagon. It comes in four variants: base, RS, GT and tS, and two engine/transmission combinations.

Our test car was the GT Sportwagon and we thoroughly enjoyed our week’s road test as it operates in all conditions in the country or the city with not only stunning performance but quite good comfort that makes it suited to family transport as well as a semi-track machine if you want to take to a driver’s day at a racing facility near you.

Subaru service intervals for the latest WRX are now at 12 months/15,000 km. Up from the six months/12,500 km on the previous models.

WRX’s infotainment system is controlled through a portrait 11.6-inch touchscreen that’s easy to see and use.

You can use voice commands to operate the system but, as is too often the way, they don’t always get the message correctly.

A six-speaker sound system is standard in the lower cost models. The WRX RS and tS

sedan models have a a premium 10-speaker Harman/Kardon setup. We certainly enjoyed the quality of sound in our test car.

Engines / transmissions The engine is a 2.4-litre flat-four ‘boxer’ unit and drives through all four wheels by way of a six-speed manual or a continuously variable automatic transmission.

In CVT models a variable torque distribution centre differential has a nominal split of 45:55 biased towards to the rear wheels. The split can be altered depending on drive modes selected, with the WRX’s Sport settings have a rear-wheel bias.

Safety Airbags cover both rows of occupants and there are IsoFix child seat mounts on the

The new 2.4-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder engine is pretty linear in its delivery and is delightful to sit behind. It’s happy to rev to close to its redline but we found it better to change a couple of hundred revs lower because it still drivers plenty of punch thank to the wide torque spread.

Subaru says the WRX will use 9.9 litres per 100 kilometres of 95 RON petrol on the combined cycle. We averaged between nine and eleven litres per hundred around town and in the suburbs. This dropped to six to seven litres on easy paced country running. If you want to have a fang in the country - and of course you do! - it’s not too bad at nine to ten litres.

Thanks to its four-wheel drive system the WRX Sportwagon is exceptional in its cornering. The chassis is nicely balanced and the steering wheel offers good feedback.

Analogue dials with a relatively small driver-display screen which can toggle through various driving data as well as route guidance.

Summing up With its affordable price and sharp performance the Subaru WRX has been a favourite of Australian drivers for more than two decades.

This latest version is unlikely to dampen our enthusiasm one little bit.

Top two teams do battle on court LOCAL TENNIS Donna Schoenmaekers It was a perfect day for tennis on Saturday, with blue skies and not a breath of wind.

Despite the fact that things were close on the ladder in Section 2 Mixed with one round left in the first half of the season, things had changed significantly by the end of the day.

It was a battle of first versus second when Grovedale travelled to Wandana Heights to face ladder leaders Blue.

Grovedale’s Lynette Marshall and Hiro Sekine matched up well against Nicole Wright and William Tohill from Blue, but went down in a tie break in the first set, while Maddison and Daryl Moore were too strong in the second taking it 6-3.

Wandana Blue continued its winning run, taking the Ladies 6-3 and another tie-break in the men’s.

The final two sets went Wandana’s way 6-4, 6-3 giving it a clean sweep, leaving Grovedale keen for a rematch after winning 25 games

Wandana Heights White continued the good day for the club when it travelled to Lara to

face its White team, and with another 6-0 win pushed into second spot.

Lara battled hard, but in a friendly match with lots of banter, Wandana was too consistent, limiting Lara to 17 games.

The third match of the round was also a clean sweep with Newcomb struggling against Centre Court.

While long rallies and a broken string were features of the day, Centre Court cemented itself in the four at the halfway mark of the season.

The final match of the round was the closest of the day when St Mary’s hosted Lara Blue.

St Mary’s started strongly with Georgia Cowdery and Thomas Crosbie taking the first set 6-0, but Lara countered with Ashleigh Hughes and Alex Watson taking the second 6-3.

St Mary’s proved too strong taking both doubles 6-2, 6-3, and then sealed the win when Crosbie won his third set for the day with Trish Kennedy to give St Mary’s a 4-2 win, and a move from seventh to fifth place.

Solid win for St Albans

By Matt Hewson St Albans centre Montana Holmes was the stand-out player for her side in a convincing 20-goal home win over St Joseph’s on Saturday.

The star midcourter was important at both ends of the court, providing both turnovers defensively and incisive transition to the St Albans offensive line of Tharjini Sivalingam (55 goals) and Madelyn Gray (15 goals).

The home side took an early lead in the match, leading 16-11 by quarter time, and continued to steadily outscore St Joseph’s throughout, finishing with a 17-8 final term to finish victorious 67-47.

St Albans coach Josh Smith said he was extremely pleased with the way his side had maintained its focus and intensity for the entire match.

“I was very happy with the win against Joey’s, they’re a bit of a threat with some real potential to be dangerous,” he said.

“It was nice to get a win over them, and to do it so convincingly was nice as well.

“We built slowly through the match, and the best part was I never felt like we were going to lose.”

Smith highlighted Holmes’ efforts down the length of the court.

“She was massive in defence, and also really steady on the feed to our shooter as well,” he said.

“She’s been great value these last two seasons, we’re lucky to have picked her up.”

Smith also praised his defensive line of Lucia Fauonuku and B grade call-up Amy Cook.

“Lucia was just a pest, which is what a good goal defence is,” he said.

“She was involved in everything, doing all this great work at the front which meant that by the time their shooter had a shot they were just completely puffed because Lucia was making them work so hard.

“We also didn’t have Majar (Hikuroa-Betham) or Achel (Yout), so we had our B Grade goal keeper Amy Cook come up to start, and she played really, really well.

“We’ve called on the depth in our squad a few times this year, and they’ve all performed really well.”

The win keeps St Albans in third spot, level on points with Colac and just one win behind Newtown & Chilwell, and Smith said his players were meeting his high expectations for the season.

“Coming into this year, we wanted to win,” he said.

“We knew we had the potential, and we’re tracking really well with that. I think we’re hitting our straps at the right time.

Bellarine proves good for a fish feed ON THE BITE Peri Stavropoulos The Bellarine Peninsula has finished exceptionally well this week for a lot of species, especially if you were after a delicious feed.

King George whiting, flathead, pinky snapper and calamari are all on the chewin the area.

Fishing in the dirty water for the whiting has been ideal and ideally on the start of the run out tide with fresh pipis or squid proving to be the best bait on a running sinker rig.

There has also been plenty of silver whiting in the area so what Benetton stock up on the bait ready for the snapper season ahead.

Calamari have been responding very well lately on major craft gigs in a size 3.0. Natural colour jigs and also bright pink jigs have been the stand out as of late.

Offshore Barwon Heads continues to fish very well for pinky snapper and gummy sharks with plenty of reports of boats making most of the good weather getting stuck at some quality fish. Drifting or fishing on anchor anywhere from 30 to 50 metre waterline has been producing some fantastic fish with gummy sharks over 15kg and snapper over 4kg being caught. There also seems to be plenty of tuna life out the front towards Cape Schanck, school tuna and a few whispers of barrels are getting around at the moment.

There is plenty of life including bait, seals, dolphins, birds and whales so there’s no surprise that the tuna will be there, too.

Barwon River around Ocean Grove has been fishing very well for silver trevally and Australian salmon on soft plastics. Either landbased, in a boat or kayak has been producing plenty of good fish in deeper holes on the incoming in slack tides.

When fishing in this area with small plastic, you might catch other species including mullet, pinky snapper and flathead.

Stony Creek Reservoir and Wurdi Bullock Reservoir have both fished very well this past week with redfin and trout captures coming in just about every single day.

For redfin, spoons style lures have been a hot favourite allowing you to cast a long way to cover maximum water and for trout, shallow diving jerk baits have been working a treat.

“It’s really important for us that we start consolidating in this latter half of the season.

We’ve had losses against Colac and Geelong West, which in both weeks we were affected by illness, injury or COVID, so we need to make sure we finish this season off with wins against the quality sides.”

Smith said his side would focus on the basics when St Albans host eighth team St Mary’s this week.

“Fundamentals win you games, so we’ll be focusing on doing the simple things right and keeping our intensity up for the full 60 minutes,” he said.

SPORT Eagles on target to improve position in 2022 East Geelong Eagles coach Ben Boseley had one goal for his side’s 2022 season – to improve on last year’s fifth position finish – and he believes his side is well on track to do so.

After winning 18.10 (118)–15.10 (100) away against Winchelsea on Saturday, the Eagles sit in third position with eight victories from their first 10 games, equalling their wins from the shortened 2021 season.

“Last year was the second time we’d played finals in a long time, so this season was about building on the foundations that we’ve set up at the club in the past couple of years,” Boseley said. “We thought that last year, at our best, we were a pretty hard team to play against, so we wanted to solidify that through this year.

“We’re still developing, but we’re in a pretty good position. We’ve only lost two games, and both of those by under four points, so we know we’re thereabouts.

“At the same time, there’s a lot to work on, we’re still a developing and emergent team.”

East Geelong made a significant number of additions to its roster in the off-season, bringing in ex-VFL player Tom Maas as playing assistant coach, prolific goal-scorers Zac Smith and Jake Watson-Serle, and Ruben Vesikuru and Billy Andrew as small forwards or in the midfield.

“We isolated a few players heading into the preseason that we wanted to recruit and managed to bring them in,” Boseley said.

“They’ve been wonderful for us, really strengthened both our starting team and also our depth.

“Those players have really helped us bridge the gap between us and teams like Inverleigh and Bannockburn.”

The Eagles’ offensive capabilities were on display at the weekend against Winchelsea,

Boseley’s side kicking nine goals in the first period to take a stranglehold on the match.

New recruits Smith and Vesikuru added four goals each to the visitors’ eventual tally of 18 goals, as did Brent McGrath.

Boseley said he was pleased with the win despite his side allowing the Blues to get back in the contest and kick seven goals in the final term to finish just three goals behind.

“It was a really encouraging performance, but I think we were all disappointed to get 100 points kicked against us,” he said.

“Normally we’re a really good, well-structured defensive team, so whether it was that the players felt the game was done and maybe slackened off with some of their defensive efforts, I’m not sure.

“But to Winch’s credit, they really kept the game alive and took their chances in the last 15 to 20 minutes.”

The Eagles will face a serious test this weekend when they travel to Bannockburn to face the second-placed Tigers on their home turf.

“They’ve been the benchmark of the competition, along with Inverleigh, for many years. They’re a hard, experienced team, and they pride themselves on their contested ball, so fundamentally we’ll need to beat them at the contest,” Boseley said. “They’ve got some really high-calibre players, but we look forward to challenging ourselves against the best.

“Clearly we want to keep winning and put ourselves in a good position come the end of the season, whether that’s first, second, third or whatever. But I don’t want to look too far ahead past Bannockburn, because we know they’ll provide a great contest for us.”

St Mary’s hold top spot

By Matt Hewson St Mary’s managed to hold on for the win away against Newtown & Chilwell on Saturday despite star midfielder Harry Benson leaving the ground with a broken jaw early in the first quarter.

The victory keeps St Mary’s in top spot on the Geelong Football League ladder, four points clear of Colac and now eight points ahead of Newtown & Chilwell.

After a tight first quarter the Saints managed to get out to a four-goal lead by half time, but a strong push from the Eagles in the third quarter reduced the margin to just five points at the final break.

St Mary’s looked in trouble when Newtown & Chilwell went two goals ahead midway through the last term, but the visitors managed to wrest back momentum, tying the game up late in the quarter with a set-shot goal from Harrison Kol. Zak Sherman sealed a dramatic victory for the Saints, kicking a late goal from open play to put the visitors up 11.16 (82) –11.10 (76).

Benson, the 2021 Mathieson medallist, is likely to miss between six to 10 weeks with the injury, which coach Glenn Keast said took some of the shine off the victory.

“It was a bit bittersweet after losing Harry to a collision in the first couple of minutes of the game,” he said. “It’s great to get the win, but disappointing to lose one of our prime movers.”

Keast said losing Benson in the rotations may have contributed to his midfield players’ apparent fatigue through the third quarter, which gave the Eagles an opportunity to fight their way back into the contest.

“Before half time we certainly had the game on our terms, so we were quite happy with where we were positioned at half time,” he said.

“Being a player short from the start of the game probably hurt our midfield a bit, and they started to fatigue through the third quarter.

“We just dropped off and allowed Newtown some uncontested footy in the third, which let them get back into the game.“ Keast said his other midfielders had dug deep through the latter stages of the game to help get the Saints over the line, and highlighted the efforts of captain Jack Blood and recently returned Jarryd Garner.

“Jack was certainly our best player.

Obviously losing Harry early, we needed a few to step up, and he led from the front,” he said.

“Jarryd was one of our better players as well.

It was only his third game back from a long lay-off with a hamstring strain, so it’s great to see him up and about again.”

“Occasionally I ask him what’s going through his mind and he’s been a really good influence on me in that sometimes simplicity rules and he’s clearly got such a good technique,” he said. “I think it’s a good lesson for all the younger players.

When you work hard on your technique and the basics, you get to a stage where you can just act more on instinct. There’s no point being a really instinctive player if your technique’s poor.

“If I was standing the mark 49 metres out on the boundary and the guy with the ball turned his body to kick a snap, I would have laughed at him. But no one laughs at Jezz.”

Scott said Saturday’s opponent was in good form.

“Their (Richmond) form’s good and I think they’ve always been a really good defensive team,” he said.

“I’m not exactly sure how other people rate them, but in my mind, it’s been the cornerstone of their game. But it’s not just their defence, one of the things that I admire about the way they play is the interaction between the various components of the game.

“They all complement each other, and that might sound obvious, but a lot of people don’t talk about the game that way. All of their parts fit really well together.

“I can come up with 15 [more] reasons why I admire them, but the one that I keep going back to is that they probably had the best player in the competition retire prematurely. He went out and they just rolled on, their system was that good.

It’s a credit to them.”
