One for the history book The Berwick Pakenham Historical Society has produced an amazing pictorial history of Pakenham.

The book, Pakenham Then and Now, has been a labour of love for society stalwart Audrey Dodson, produced in a then and now format of colour and black and white photos.

It also features recollections of Cecilia Hillman as a 10-year-old in 1900 and Ms Dodson’s own recollections as well.

The book sells for $30 and can be purchased at the Berwick Pakenham Historical Society Museum on the corner of the Princes Highway and Main Street on Sundays between 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

A post box door was ripped off its hinges on Cameron Way in Pakenham, putting local residents’ mail at risk.

The vandalised mail pox was spotted by locals on Tuesday 14 June, with a few letters handed in to the local post office.

An Australia Post spokesperson said tampering with mail in Australia is a federal offence.

Clough’s donations flow In memory of their patriarch, Pakenham’s Clough family has helped raise $46,000 for local charities and pancreatic cancer research.

The Clough Charity Race Night was held at Pakenham Racecourse on Thursday 12 May with over 200 guests in attendance, raising money for the Pancare Foundation, Frankie’s Community Kitchen, Make-a-Wish CardiniaCasey Branch and Cardinia Foundation.

Each charity received $7000.

The night was in memory of Bruce Clough, the beloved Mazda businessman who passed from a battle of pancreatic cancer over six years ago.

Cardinia Foundation representative Brett Owen said the $7000 goes towards the foundation’s annual grant scheme.

“It is very much appreciated and it will go back into the Cardinia community,” Mr Owen said.

“It’s quite significant.”

Kathy Mayus, president of Make-a-Wish Cardinia - Casey Branch, said their donation would go towards the 32 local children who were waiting for wishes to be granted.

“It was important for the Clough family for the money to go to help local children. We are only restricted by the child’s imagination.”

Led by Bruce’s daughter-in-law, Tamara Clough, the fundraising event banded the community through dining, auctions and awards with a great result of fun and funds raised toward these worthy causes.

“It’s a little bit overwhelming to be presenting the charities with the cheques. It feels good to help make a difference.”

In recognition and celebration of Bruce, over the past three annual race nights the Clough family have raised over $118,000 to fight pancreatic cancer.

Pakenham Mazda business development manager Wade Calderwood said he helped create the concept with the family in 2017.

“Since then it’s gone from strength to strength,“ he said.

“Bruce was the patriarch of the family and was a local icon. He created a tow service vehicle in the mid-1970s in Nar Nar Goon before he started selling cars.“

A magical family holiday Two families from Pakenham went on their first ever holiday last week thanks to the Magical Getaway Foundation.

The Magical Getaway Foundation (MGF) provides hope and lifetime changes through a first ever getaway for vulnerable or disadvantaged Australian families.

Using money donated from the Inner Wheel Club of Pakenham, MGF organised a seven day fully funded holiday to Phillip Island for the two families, who were referred

by Pakenham Springs Primary School due to their challenging family circumstances.

The families stayed at the Island Breeze Resort and created lifetime memories, visiting the local tourist attractions including the Penguin Parade, Churchill Island, The Chocolate Factory and A Maze’N Things, with thanks to the generosity and support from all the venues.

“Thanks so much for all that you have done!“ Liana, mum of three, said.

“Honestly, couldn’t even put into words how humbled and blessed we are to have this experience.

“It has provided us with very special memories to reflect on for years to come.“ Rosemary Teed director and founder of Magical Getaway Foundation said it was not about the getaway itself, but the hope it brings.

Club hit by vandals

By Jamie Salter The Deep Creek Golf Club was forced to close its doors after it was discovered vandals had targeted the Pakenham venue on Monday 13 June.

Police have started an ongoing investigation into the burglary at the business.

“It’s believed unknown offender/s have gained entry by smashing a sliding door at the Cameron Way premises sometime in the morning,“ police said.

It is unknown if anything was stolen at this stage but damage is estimated at around $8,000.

Multiple glass doors and windows were smashed and police attended the scene to ensure the building was safe.

Although the golf course remained open, the business was forced to close its cafe, lounge, kitchen and Pro Shop.

Deep Creek Golf Club chief executive officer Haydn Thompson said he felt “anger, disappointment and frustration“ at the news of the break in.

“But because we have dealt with this a few times before we do become somewhat numb to this,“ Mr Thompson said.

“This is the first time we’ve had to shut the business down due to the damage because multiple areas were targeted.“ He said the building has an element of remoteness that is opportunistic for vandals.

“This is the third incident in about five weeks which is disappointing,“ he said.

Along with a loss of income, staff members were told their shifts had been cancelled.

“There’s the cash cost but what more affects us is the loss of work for the day for our casual employees on what would have been a busy public holiday,“ Mr Thompson said.

“It also affects the patrons who wanted to use the business - it becomes a negative experience for them.“ The business was able to reopen on Tuesday 14 June.

Due to supply chain constraints, the Golf Club will be in for a lengthy wait to replace its glass panels.

Cardinia woman in embankment crash A Cardinia woman has had a lucky escape after she crashed off an embankment in Glen Forbes.

Police were called to Dalyston-Glen Forbes Road after reports a single vehicle had crashed and rolled down an embankment around 7.15am on Monday 13 June.

A spokesperson for CFA said while the driver was able to extract herself from the car, the steep embankment caused her to fall a further 30m with the car teetering over the edge.

Working alongside Victoria State Emergency Service, Fire Rescue Victoria, Ambulance Victoria and Victoria Police, the car was safely secured before crews were able to assess the

Drivers on notice Police officers caught 21 drug drivers across Cardinia over Operation Regal over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Along with the 21 drug drivers were three drink drivers, nine disqualified drivers, seven unlicensed drivers and 19 unregistered vehicles.

Pedestrian fatalities have more than doubled, with 16 pedestrian deaths compared with six at the same time last year.

With six lives lost to date in June, police are urging motorists not to be complacent during the remaining winter months.

Victoria Police assistant commissioner for road policing Glenn Weir said now was a critical point in turning the year around.

“It was pleasing to see the majority of road users doing the right thing over the Queen’s Birthday weekend, with reduced levels of road trauma overall,” Mr Weir said.

“However, it’s completely unacceptable that so many motorists are continuing to take risks on our roads – especially with wet weather to contend with.

“Police will continue to target and enforce against those who engage in risky driving behaviour, and we make no apologies for this.”

Identifying elder abuse

By Shelby Brooks Identifying financial and emotional abuse of older people in our community remains vitally important, as Cardinia Shire Council recognised World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Wednesday 15 June.

At an event held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham, Jennifer Evans from Senior Rights Victoria spoke about protecting your rights, elder abuse, risk, prevention and where to get support and assistance.

“Elder abuse is a direct result of ageism which discriminates, devalues and denies the rights of older people’s safety,” Ms Evans said.

“On that spectrum it’s a form of family violence, targeted at the elderly.”

Ms Evans explained that some victims are

reluctant to report incidents because they don’t want to lose the relationship with their abuser, if they are a family member.

“They might think, ‘We don’t want to lose our carer or we don’t want to lose the relationship with our children’,” Ms Evans said.

“Senior Rights Victoria can support you in what you want and how you try to maintain that relationship.

“But if it has gone to the extremes of completely ripping you off, then there would be no real relationship left. But if it’s not so bad and you do want to maintain a relationship and keep the doors open for healing later on, they can support you doing that.”

Ms Evans said the best measures to deal with elder abuse were preventative.

“If we recognise it, if we seek help, work

out what we can do to prevent it but the reality is some of us will be abused and you need to do something about it but with support we can rebuild our lives and rebuild our relationships,” she said.

“If it’s extreme and immediate, you should ring triple-zero.”

The United Nations (UN) recognises June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) to raise awareness and knowledge of elder abuse and the various ways it can affect the community.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day brings together senior citizens, caregivers, and local government to combat elder abuse.

Cardinia Shire Council continues its commitment to tackle elder abuse through the Together We Can initiative.

Everyone can help stop, prevent and end family violence in Cardinia Shire by reporting older citizens subjected to violence, coercion or abuse.

Family Violence, including elder abuse, does not discriminate between age, ability, culture or sexual orientation.

As a community, Cardinia Shire residents can help to create a safe community that values equality and respect.

‘Beautiful’ Boxer Kota still missing A Pakenham family is devastated after their beloved Boxer Kota went missing.

The 17-month-old dog hasn’t been seen in days; there have been no sightings of her since Saturday 11 June.

Owner Karen Booth has flooded community Facebook groups with posts in the hopes of finding someone with information about the whereabouts of the dog.

The family’s Pakenham Lakeside home backs onto the train line near the Cardinia Train Station and flyers have been placed around the neighbourhood at Pakenham Marketplace, Pakenham Lakeside Square, and Cardinia, Pakenham and Officer train stations.

Ms Booth said her family was “absolutely devastated”.

“She is a beautiful pure bred Boxer and very much a mummy’s girl,” she said.

“She is skittish and shy and has no collar on which would make it harder to catch her.

“She will be frightened, hungry, very sore and tired.”

Ms Booth has phoned the local council, veterinary clinics, and pounds but no Boxer puppy has been brought in.

She now fears Kota has been stolen.

“I am a single mother with two young children. We are beyond devastated and want our precious girl returned to us.”

A reward is being offered to anyone who find Kota.

More works A range of works under the Monash Freeway Upgrade are set to cause disruptions for commuters over the coming weeks.

The Monash Freeway will be closed outbound between Warrigal and Wellington roads on Thursday 16 June from 11pm to 5.30am.

Detours will be made using Warrigal Road, the Princes Highway and Wellington Road.

The outbound entry from Huntingdale Road to the Monash Freeway will be closed until Tuesday 28 June at 5am for lighting and upgrade works.

The outbound entry at Forster Road will be in use.

A light pole installation and kerb works will close the intersection of O’Shea Road and Soldiers Roadin Berwick in all directions from 8pm on Thursday, 16 June to 5am on Tuesday, 21 June.

Local detours will be in place using Streeton Way, Riviera Way, Jembecca Drive and Viewgrand Drive.

Multiple lanes will be closed on sections of the Monash Freeway between Warrigal Road and EastLink in June for various works, including off-peak day time lane closures.

Major delays are expected during peak times.

Taxi driver nabbed drink driving A taxi driver will have to find another way to make ends meet for the next six months, after he was busted for drink driving while on the clock.

To the disbelief of police, the driver had a passenger onboard when he entered a roadside testing site on Thompsons Road in Cranbourne North on Sunday 12 June.

He provided a positive preliminary breath test, before undergoing a secondary breath test with a result of 0.091.

Not only was this nearly twice the legal drinking limit of 0.05, but taxi drivers and other drivers of commercial vehicles are required to have a zero blood alcohol concentration when driving.

His driver’s licence was suspended for six months.

Police in Cranbourne North were shocked to find a taxi driver, who was carrying a passenger, returned a breath test of 0.091.

Rivercrest Christian College Year 4 students are helping fight poverty by making handmade gifts.

On Tuesday 7 June, the Clyde North students took part in the annual market day.

As part of their Year 4 unit of inquiry, ‘How we organise ourselves’, students are learning how entrepreneurs use opportunities to creatively meet supply and demand.

Students teamed up with fellow classmates and formed little businesses and created products that were sold on market day.

Products included non-edible items such as jewellery, stress toys, paper craft and games.

The market took place in the Rivercrest Christian College classrooms and breakout spaces.

The entire Rivercrest Primary School was invited to visit the stalls and each student was encouraged to donate up to $5 for fundraising.

All money raised will be donated to the school’s chosen charity Compassion, a Chris-

tian international holistic child development organisation.

The charity aims to assist more than two million children through their Child Sponsorship Program.

Through their Child Sponsorship Program, more than two million children are currently being released from poverty.

“There were so many learning aspects involved in the process,” another Year 4 teacher, Gabrielle Zeibig, said.

“Students learnt business skills, marketing, fundraising, design, craftsmanship, communication, working with buddies, teamwork, public speaking, entrepreneurship, negotiation skills and much more.

Top honours for locals

By Jamie Salter and Shelby Brooks Dedicated Emerald volunteer Graeme Legge and Nar Nar Goon volunteer Helen Reid are receiving awards as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Graeme Legge received an AM for his service to the Emerald community over seven decades, adding to the OAM he received in 2003.

At 15, Graeme was exposed to the joys of volunteering and there was no turning back.

“On a hot summer’s night, I was walking home and the fire siren went, so I jogged to the fire station and sort of hung around before the crew came and called out ’well are you coming or aren’t you?’, so I jumped onto the back of the fire truck,” he said.

A life member of the Emerald Fire Brigade since 2013, Graeme spent 10 years as secretary, 12 years as captain and is now vice-president.

In 1983, Graeme got involved in the Emerald and District Ambulance Auxiliary as the community became concerned with lengthy wait times for ambulances which travelled from Ferntree Gully to Emerald.

Graeme worked to start an ambulance branch in Emerald which was co-housed in the fire brigade for about three years and nine months.

He was a councillor from 1997 to 2012 and had multiple stints as mayor before he was bestowed the Mayor Emeritus Award from the Municipal Association of Victoria.

“I enjoyed people getting together and agreeing on what was needed - leading to projects coming about in the community,” he said.

He was awarded Emerald Citizen of the Year in 2020 and Senior Citizen of the Year in 2015.

In 1989, Graeme became a Justice of the Peace and was recognised as a fellow of the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices in 2016.

He gained a Master of Divinity and continues to lead a church service once a month at Gembrook Uniting Church.

Graeme worked as a teacher for 40 years across Emerald State School, Monbulk Primary and then Upwey Primary before coming back to Emerald.

With a fascination for local history, Graeme wrote books about the history of Emerald’s ambulance service and the centenary of Emerald schools, and is set to publish a book about his experience with Scouts Victoria.

At 86, Graeme doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

Helen Reid of Nar Nar Goon was also honoured with an OAM for her volunteer work with pony clubs, University of the Third Age and her career work as an electorate officer with local Liberal MPs. Her volunteering began after she went back to high school at Pakenham Secondary College as an adult to complete her HSC. Wanting to make her mother proud has been the driving force behind Helen’s educational journey and gave her confidence to pursue volunteer and work opportunities, she said.

Helen was also instrumental in getting the pony club grounds in Pakenham Upper up to scratch with improved facilities.

One of the highlights of her time as part of the pony club world was when she was asked to be secretary for the first pony club national games held in Victoria.

She was the inaugural secretary and committee member of the Tonimbuk Horse Trials from 2000 to 2013.

“That was a mammoth undertaking, but that wasn’t a one person job,” Helen said.

“Any volunteer job is never just a one person job - you’re part of a team. Pony club has remarkable people.”

It was through a friend involved in pony club that Helen heard Liberal Pakenham MP Rob McLellan was hiring an electorate officer.

“That was when I became really involved in the wider community and it opened my eyes to some of the issues.

“Some people you can help and some you can’t.”

After Mr McLellan’s retirement, Helen then served under Edward O’Donohue until his retirement last year.

Since 2003, Helen has also been a University of the Third Age (U3A) tutor in medieval history.

“My passion has always been medieval history,” she said.

“I love it.

“The organisation is just so worthwhile and

Helen said she was shocked to have learnt of her OAM award.

“I think it’s extra special because it is a ju-

“I hadn’t expected it whatsoever.”

A ‘Winter Wonderland’

Kicking up their heels Over two consecutive evenings, students from St Paul’s Anglican Grammar School recently kicked up their heels and danced the night away during their Presentation Balls.

Year 12 students were overjoyed to finally be able to have their ball after last year’s cancellation due to event restrictions.

In line with being an all-inclusive event, students were presented in pairings or groups of their choice.

This year there was also the option to wear an alternative white outfit instead of a traditional dress, with some students opting for a white suit.

Students had rehearsed weekly for most of the year and had a fantastic evening displaying their dancing abilities to family and friends.

Attraction and retention Last week I had the privilege of being one of four panellists on a business breakfast at The Palladium at Crown, on the topic “Don’t let good people get away - how to attract and keep them”.

This is a massive issue right now with many businesses finding it very hard to get staff amidst the well-publicised staff shortages and those that do are finding that salary requirements have increased substantially.

With the prospect of further interest rate rises and inflation showing no signs of reducing, the current situation is unlikely to change significantly for some time, and so now, more than ever, it is vital that businesses retain valuable staff and, where necessary, attract good, new employees.

So how is this done and where should the focus be placed?

If a business is able to retain staff but not attract new employees, then while it may be able to continue on a BAU (business as usual) basis, over time the workforce will become stale with a consequent impact on new ideas and innovation.

Conversely, if a business is able to attract staff (perhaps through paying higher salaries) but is unable to retain employees, then the cost of employment (and staff training) becomes very high and the level of staff churn is likely to create low morale, not to mention a poor reputation for the business.

Clearly being able to both attract and retain is important, but the primary consideration is really retention, since if the talent pool is leaking, there is a continual drain on cash and resources, so plugging the leak needs to be done first.

Oakstone International (a UK-based recruitment company), identified the top eight reasons staff stay with a company (oakstone.co.uk/ new-blog/2018/8/10/the-top-8-reasons-employees-stay-with-a-company/#believe): 1. They believe they are part of something

2. They believe in what they’re doing, and it has purpose and meaning.

3. Their work is recognised and appreciated.

4. They appreciate and respect their co-workers.

5. They have a mentor who encourages them.

6. They have trust in the business leaders.

7. They are emotionally invested and genuinely care about the company.

8. They are treated fairly.

Note that none of these reasons have anything to do with financial reward, but they do have everything to do with company culture.

It is well known that typically “staff don’t leave companies, they leave bosses” so this really does underpin the need to ensure that a company culture is created that is healthy, positive and supports staff growth and development.

In fact, the 2019 LinkedIn Workplace Learning Report found “94 per cent of employees say that they would stay at a company longer if it simply invested in helping them learn”.

Once a company’s talent pool drain is plugged, then the focus can shift to attracting new staff, safer in the knowledge that they will stick around for a while. There are a few essential steps to getting this right which are often overlooked.

Being able to both attract and retain staff is important, but the primary consideration is really retention.

Key to the process is ensuring that the healthy company culture is clearly articulated in marketing and job-related materials since this is likely to then describe why the role is exciting as opposed to just what it does.

If appropriate, the list above can be used to

extract key benefits that are likely to appeal to good candidates.

Finally, although salary is not the be all and end all, you must at least pay market rates otherwise even happy staff may get tempted to leave.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

According to The Yarra River Keeper Association and The Cleanwater Group, EPS is consistently the highest littered microplastic detected in the Yarra River.

“The City of Casey has identified EPS pollution as a critical environmental issue in the community, causing environmental damage to livestock, wildlife and waterways,” Mr Jansen said.

“This project seeks to address the root cause of the problem by finding more viable and sustainable alternatives that are more consistent with the circular economy and would have less impact on the environment and community.”

It is hoped the findings of the study can be shared and applied across all of Melbourne, Mr Jansen said.

Other council projects supported by the funding include building business cases for a shared organics processing facilities and a glass recycling facility, as well as establishing a way to recirculate materials into existing Central Victorian industries.

City of Casey is one of 30 councils across Victoria that will share in $630,000 from the State Government in a bid to promote sustainability and increase the state’s circular economy.

Energy, Environment and Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio announced on Monday 6 June the funding would be used on projects that investigate how to divert waste from landfill, boost local circular economies and reduce costs by uncovering new methods for recycling materials.

The council is set to receive $20,000 funding to work in collaboration with RMIT University and not-for-profit organisation Circular Economy Victoria on a project that seeks to find a local alternative for a commonly used building material.

The group will work with local developers and builders to find a recycled substitute for expanded polystyrene (EPS) waffle pods, which are used extensively in residential housing developments for their strength and durability.

I am a competitive gamer. I currently have over 3000 hours in a game called League of Legends, which I’ve been playing since 2018.

What are you most passionate about?

I am passionate about mental health and animal welfare. I’ve written a few stories on kitten fostering in the past so that is definitely one of my biggest passions. I regularly donate to a kitten fostering organisation in Melbourne.

What would your last meal be?

Sushi is always my go-to for a quick lunch, I don’t think that would change even if it was my last meal.

What was your most memorable moment?

My most memorable moment would probably be this time when I was little and was at Lakes Entrance with my family. My dad picked up an echidna off the side of the road and it proceeded to projectile-defecate on me… that was not a fun trip home.

What was your favourite subject in school?

My favourite subject in school was psychology, my teacher was amazing and made the class so fun and interesting for me. Shout out to Mr Hands, thank you for making high school a great experience.

What event past or present would you like to witness?

I would like to watch ice skating at the winter Olympics one day. I am always so mesmerised by it when I watch it on the TV, in person would be such an incredible experience.

Troupe du Jour will delight, surprise and captivate everyone at the Cardinia Cultural Centre this month for their morning entertainment ‘Sip and See’ program.

Troupe du Jour will be at the centre on Wednesday 22 June, where they will create hilarious sketches, stories and songs on the spot from audience suggestions.

Members of Troupe Du Jour met playing Theatresports at the Arts Centre in the 1980s, going on to perform at the legendary Le Joke – upstairs at the Last Laugh – before realising they could entertain audiences from business to community to health care conferences to schools and beyond.

Russell Fletcher, of Troupe du Jour, encouraged the audience to come prepared to share their ideas with the group.

“We love creating scenes and whole (short) musicals based on real stories from our audience,” he said.

He said in a way, the audience and the performers create the show together.

“It’s a one off. The audience loves that we are honouring people’s stories whilst being completely mischievous.”

As for career highlights, Russell gets a good kick out of things going wrong in commercial theatre productions.

“Like a possum upstaging me in the Botanic Gardens in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, or the power going out at the Arts Centre during Yes Prime Minister.”

But he said they were great opportunities to have extra fun.

“The Shakespeare Under The Stars shows were amazing.

“Performing Spontaneous Broadway at the same time as my solo show Jest Like Danny Kaye at the Edinburgh Festival whilst getting 4 and 5 star reviews was pretty special. Winning the World Cup of Improv in Montreal – beating the UK and the US in the finals – well that was very satisfying.”

By David Nagel Just Social has converted its dominant home-and-away form into premiership success after a gripping 8-5 victory over Snipers in the South West Gippsland Dart League (SWGDL) grand final at the Cardinia Club in Pakenham.

A large crowd turned out to watch an absorbing contest unfold, with the lead changing four times throughout the night before Just Social won five of the last six legs to take home the trophy.

The best-of-15-leg final was split into three sections, with five singles matches being played either side of five doubles contests through the middle stages of the evening.

Just Social emerged from the opening five legs with a 3-2 advantage after fighting back from a 2-1 deficit early. Peg outs of 60 and 36 – in legs four and five – saw the premiership favourites take the lead heading in to the all-important doubles.

The Snipers came out firing, winning leg six with a three-dart average of 78 before a bullseye finish saw them take back the lead in leg seven.

Both teams had opportunities to peg out in legs eight and nine, but two double-10 finishes saw Just Social take back the advantage with just one doubles match remaining.

The tension built as both teams missed opportunities to win the most important leg of the match, with Just Social looking for a 6-4 advantage and the Snipers looking to level the scores at 5-5.

Jake Keen punched his fist with delight after nailing his double and giving Just Social a huge kickstart heading into the final singles contests.

Just Social then kicked out to a 7-4 lead, before the Snipers hit back with a “madhouse” double-one to make the scores 7-5.

Both teams also had chances in what would prove to be the final leg of the season, with Terry King – wearing his Tasmanian shirt – showing composure to hit double-five and win Just Social the premiership with a hard-fought 8-5 victory.

The night provided some high-class action, with two 180’s thrown and a plethora of tons and 140’s as well.

With the Summer Season now done, focus turns to the Winter Season with two new teams set to challenge the rein of Just Social and Snipers at the top of the ladder.

Players return to the oche for round one on Tuesday 21 June.

By David Nagel Champion trainer Peter Moody and gunjockey Linda Meech wound back the clock at Sandown Hillside on Saturday renewing a successful partnership that scaled the ultimate heights in racing.

Prior to Moody’s extended lay-off from the sport, which stretched for four years from March 2016 to early 2020, Meech was a staple of the Moody camp and rode winners for fun.

The pair had a phenomenal 25 per cent winning strike-rate together with Moody providing Meech with the first Group-1 of her career when they teamed up with Plucky Belle to win the 2015 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.

On Saturday, at Sandown, the pair combined for their first win together since Moody returned to the sport when exciting two-yearold She Dances trounced her rivals in the opening race on the card the $130,000 TwoYear-Old Open Handicap (1000m).

Moody gave Meech an early indication that they were in for a successful day.

“He (Moody) said it would win when he rang me this morning so I was pretty happy to hear that, he’s a pretty good judge,” Meech said post-race.

“He said her work was outstanding during

She Dances began quickly from an inside gate and dictated terms from the front, with Meech releasing the brakes in the straight to race away for an impressive three-length victory.

Moody’s stable representative Katherine Coleman was excited by the ease of victory.

“She seems to have really enjoyed that heavy track out there today and that was a lovely debut,” Coleman said.

“She began well from the barriers and travelled in a beautiful rhythm for Linda and was able to finish it off strongly…so we’re very happy with that.”

Coleman said She Dances was a natural speed horse who loved to run fast.

“She’s one of those fillies that gets a bit cranky if you try and hold her up and do things your way, so we just have to keep her happy and keep her in a nice rhythm and Linda was able to do exactly that today,” she said.

The victory of She Dances capped off a good couple of days for Moody and his team after Allegretta won on the Ballarat Synthetic on Thursday.

Lions investigate returning to their roots

By David Nagel Pakenham Football Club President Derrick Brown has confirmed AFL Victoria has granted his club permission to begin talks with the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition (WGFNC) about a possible move to the WGFNC for the 2023 season.

Pakenham is currently aligned to the Outer East Football Netball Competition.

Brown explained that Pakenham was simply exploring its options moving forward.

“Our members and supporters have said we need to keep an open mind as to what the future holds and, on that basis, we’re doing our due diligence to see where things are at,” Brown said.

“We need to consider all options, and that’s the process we’ve began undertaking.

“A lot of clubs in our area are experiencing similar issues at the moment and clubs are reviewing where they’re at.”

Brown said the structure of game day in the WGFNC was appealing to the Pakenham Football Club.

“Having four grades of football, and a full complement of netball, is a model that we see as advantageous to improving continued volunteer participation at the club,” he said.

Pakenham was a stalwart of the former West Gippsland Football League (WGFL) for generations before spending the last two decades in the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League (MPNFL), Casey Cardinia Football

By Tyler Lewis The first half of the AFL Outer East season is complete and it’s now time to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Pakenham has ridden the wave of momentum more than any club, Officer face an abrupt search for a coach, while all clubs bar Narre Warren itself are in pursuit of a method that will defeat these seemingly untouchable Magpies.

Division 1 tells a similar story; Seville appears impenetrable – despite losing its skipper and best player to a knee injury, but there are several sides waiting in a log jam behind the Blues for a moment of brief complacency.

Berwick Springs has shown glimpses of brilliance in its hunt for a maiden finals berth in its second season, while Gembrook Cockatoo – with the talent on its list – simply has to deliver when the whips are cracking.

So, here’s the bottom line…

PREMIER DIVISION NARRE WARREN (1st): Record: 7-0 Best win: Woori Yallock – 19.16 (130) to 7.12 (54) Worst loss: Nil. Bottom line: Like polarising Peaky Blinders character Tommy Shelby, only Narre Warren can kill Narre Warren. Complacency the only worry, but it’s a factor the Pies are onto early.

Slow starting Pakenham primed for premiership hunt

By Lachlan Mitchell PREMIER DIVISION Outer East Netball has reached new heights in the opening eight rounds with a variety of contenders emerging from the pack.

Narre Warren, led by former Australian international Erin Bell, has bounced out of the blocks to remain undefeated through the opening rounds of the season.

Bell and her Magpies are flying high leading into the next half of the season after a convincing 57-39 goal win over Upwey Tecoma just before the break.

Bell missed the clash, but Jemma Osborne stepped up scoring 49 goals in the win.

The Pakenham Lions have roared to life over the past four weeks to even the ledger at four wins and four losses.

Pakenham went on a four-game losing streak to start the season, suffering some close losses to Mt Evelyn and Olinda Ferny Creek.

The Lions have been able to carve out a few nervy wins and hold on in tight finishes to secure the points.

As Pakenham finds its form throughout the season the biggest test comes against Narre Warren in round 10.

Lions’ shooters Mia Washington and Hayley Poulton have showed their class putting on the majority of their team’s goals.

Tenielle Morrell has also been influential in limiting opposition attack as goal keeper.
