The case of an airline pilot accused of murdering campers Russell Hill of Drouin and Pakenham’s Carol Clay has been delayed so prosecutors can continue to build their case.

Gregory Stuart Lynn, 55, remained quiet as he faced Sale Magistrates Court via videolink on Tuesday afternoon.

Lynn is accused of killing Mr Hill and Ms

Clay at a remote Wonnangatta campsite in the Victorian alpine region in March 2020.

Lynn was arrested late last year following a long-running police investigation into the case, and detectives found the bodies of Mr Hill and Ms Clay in remote bushland outside Dargo in February.

Prosecutor Angela Liantzakis on Tuesday

requested a long adjournment so the prosecution could obtain more transcripts and other material. Lynn’s lawyer Chris McLennan also sought an adjournment so Lynn could review a hard copy version of the brief in prison.

He’ll remain behind bars until the case returns to court on 23 August.

Art’s at the heart of town

By Shelby Brooks An explosion of art has flooded all corners of the Cardinia Cultural Centre with the return of the Art Show Pakenham.

Opening night on Friday 27 May celebrated the return to in-person art and all the artworks were unveiled in their glory.

Attendees on the night were treated to over 300 artworks in every way shape and form.

The prizes reflected the amazing diversity of the show.

Best in Show was shared between Sue Jarvis impressive four panel representation of Mt Cannibal and It Hao Pheh’s delicate and atmospheric watercolour The Red Chair.

Striking sculptures, delicate jewellery pieces, whimsical penguins, heart-warming landscapes, impressive youth art all represented in the judges selections of winners.

When announcing the winners for the show, judge Jo Reitze complimented the standard of the show and encouraged all artists to share their art with others at exhibitions.

Other major winners included Silver Award winner Laurel Foenander with ’Stay Home’, Bronze Award winner Aukje Van Vark with ’Happy Dance’, Local Artist winner Lindsay Muirhead with ’Lake Grave’ and Young Art first prize awarded to ’Screamer’ by Jacob Dendulk.

The evening kicked off with a look around the art, then the exhibition was officially opened by councillor Tammy Radford. Patron Andrew Mackenzie reflected on the outstanding Cultural Centre facilities and the hard work of the committee and then the Wearable Art took to the stage.

Prizes reflecting the diversity of entries; stunning race wear, a cool take on the little black dress; adorned with original art by the creator and an elegant suit taking out the first prize reflective of a tree.

The crowd pleasers in the line-up included an incredible set of wings and an outfit titled ’How was your Lockdown?’. This outfit reflected the artists own lockdown experience and close relationship with the humble potato chip and importance of toilet rolls.

Wearable Art first prize was awarded to ’Wearing a Tree’ by Margaret Carr, second prize was awarded to ’Flower Power’ by Fleur O’Brien and third prize was awarded to ’Transformation in Progress’ by Nazia Wasif.

Event coordinator Jillian Ronald said she was delighted by the fantastic attendance of opening night.

Khans Catering presented a generous supper and Elizabeth Sutherland gave a beautiful performance on her Celtic Harp.

By Jamie Salter Community leader Harpreet Singh Kandra is being acknowledged in the very first Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll, recognising the efforts of individuals who have made exceptional and lasting contributions to multiculturalism across the state.

The program focuses on local champions of diversity and the vital role multicultural individuals have played to keep communities safe and connected.

About 174 applications were made with only 28 finalists selected.

Mr Singh was celebrated for his work at the Officer Sikh Temple Gurudwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar (SGND).

He said he was “humbled and honoured“ to be included in the honour roll.

“I’m feeling very good and this is an award for all the volunteers who have been working with me at the Gurdwara towards social cohesion,” he said.

Mr Singh was nominated by Alison Ryan who took part in the Cardinia Community Leadership Program alongside him.

“Over the years she’s always supported our work and I want to thank her for nominating me,” Mr Singh said.

Throughout the coronavirus pandemic SGND volunteers provided locals with vaccines, groceries and even recipe books.

Another stand out initiative is the Gurdwara’s planting days, with 1,600 trees planted so far.

A World Environment Day will be held on Sunday 5 June where another 250 trees will be planted at the Gurdwara with help from Beaconhills College.

“Our bucket list is always big, so we’re hoping to become the first Gurdwara in the world which is climate neutral and we need a lot of support for that,” Mr Singh said.

An awards ceremony was held on Tuesday 31 May at the Melbourne Arts Centre.

“The award night was very well organised and after two and a half years where we haven’t attended big events like this - it was very interesting,” Mr Singh .

“I started networking with some of the other inductees so we can find ways to support each others activities.

“I’d like to take the opportunity to congratulate the other inductees and all the volunteers who have worked with me.”

The Victorian Multicultural Honour Roll replaces the Meritorious Service to the Community category from the Victorian Multicultural Commission’s annual Multicultural Awards for Excellence.

It was created as a separate awards platform to further spotlight those who promote multicultural civic participation and the social, cultural and economic benefits of diversity.

Tiny... but mighty effort

By Shelby Brooks Abbie and Ellie McIntosh share more than just DNA. The identical twins, in Grade 1 at Beaconhills College in Pakenham, also share a talent for Brazilian jiu jitsu.

Abbie and Ellie both placed on the podium in the seven-year old, under 30.2kg division at the Victorian Jiu Jitsu State Championships over the weekend.

Abbie took home the gold, while sister Ellie took the silver.

The sisters only took up the sport at the start of 2021 and the State Championships was their first competition.

Mum Leesa said the girls had to fight each other for the championship, which she said was hard to watch.

“Abbie got Ellie to submit,” Leesa said.

Ellie prefers fighting someone else rather than her sister, but said she liked the sport be-

cause it was “strong and fun”.

Abbie said it was “exciting” to compete at the championships and also found it “fun”.

The girls train four times a week and have a grey belt ranking.

“We started them in jiu jitsu for self defence initially,” Leesa said.

“They just love it and they want to do it. It’s good to see they have that drive.”

Dad Brett said he was “so proud” of his daughters and loved how the sport taught them respect and gave them confidence.

“It’s helped with their confidence and coordination. They were tripping over their own feet when they started,” he said.

The sisters train at SD Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in Pakenham with coach Silvano (Sam) Chaves.

“For me, it’s a huge achievement for the girls,” Sam said of the wins.

“You can see their talent and how the family works as one to achieve such a result.”

Park to unite community Officer residents are celebrating the opening of a new park with a range of exciting play equipment, active zones and calming spaces designed to support the local community to re-connect in nature.

The park covering more than one hectare was officially opened in AVID Property Group’s (AVID) Hillstowe community on Saturday 28 May with MP Brad Battin in attendance.

AVID Property Group project director Danny Boubli said the park was located centrally within the community, to ensure all residents were within a five minute walk from the park and to also create sense of place within the boutique Hillstowe community.

“At AVID one of our core values is ‘bringing communities together’ and the Hillstowe Central Park has been purposefully designed with this in mind- incorporating multiple spaces for children and adults alike to enjoy,” Mr Boubli said.

“The playground includes equipment for smaller children such as a rocker and carousel as well as a larger play structure, inground trampolines and a multi-sports court complete with spectator seating for older children and families to enjoy.

“Additionally, we have incorporated 3,058 sqm of open green space for recreational activity, 394 meters of footpaths, multiple shaded picnic areas and various seating zones to create holistic outdoor spaces for people of all ages to experience.“ Taylors Development Strategies landscape architect Leon Rozitis said the design of the Hillstowe Central Park focused on connecting people to the natural surrounds whilst referencing the history of the Officer area.

“The park includes two dedicated ‘natureplay’ areas, which is a fairly new concept in park design. Studies show that nature play enhances children’s physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development so we’re pleased

“Additionally, over 115 trees have been planted throughout, including those in the ornamental tree grove, chosen to reflect the horticultural history of the area.

“A large existing gum tree has been retained on-site, coupled with newly planted native drought tolerant plant species that will encourage biodiversity and canopy trees that will

create shaded areas and support the cooling of the park.

“The use of recycled brickwork to the arbor acknowledges the brickmaking industry in the 1880’s, while the palette of the play equipment, furniture and finishes aims to create links to the timber industry of the 1870’s.”

Public Service Officers arrests three teenagers at Cranbourne Station on Monday night. 139508

Teens nabbed Protective Services Officers have arrested three teens at Cranbourne Railway Station after they were made aware of a robbery that took place earlier in the night.

Police said a 20-year-old Cranbourne East man was on a bus from Cranbourne Railway Station about 6.30pm on Monday 30 May when a group of six to eight teenage boys boarded the bus and approached the victim.

They allegedly demanded the victim’s wallet and phone before assaulting him and stealing his earphones.

The victim managed to get off the bus, returned home and reported the matter to police.

At roughly 7.40pm Protective Services Officers at Cranbourne Station, who were aware the robbery had taken place, observed a group of teens matching the description of those involved in the bus incident.

They arrested a 13-year-old Narre Warren boy, a 15-year-old Cranbourne West boy and a 16-year-old Hoppers Crossing boy and allegedly located property belonging to the victim.

The teens are currently assisting police with their enquiries while the investigation into the incident continues.

Plea to build more homes

By Jamie Salter The Labor Government is now in power and Australians are waiting to see what will be done to solve the housing crisis.

The Help to Buy shared equity scheme is set to have the government own 30 or 40 per cent of a property, with homeowners given the opportunity to buy this percentage of the property back when viable.

The scheme plans to help young prospective buyers to enter the property market but is capped to 10,000 spaces per annum.

Ongoing campaigner for affordable housing and Garfield resident Tony Fitzgerald said the 10,000 per annum cap does not address the housing shortfall.

“There are approximately five million Australians aged between 20 and 34 years of age,“ Mr Fitzgerald said.

“Research conducted over the election campaign revealed that between 65 per cent of young Australians believe they will never be able to afford a home - that equates to 3.55 million people.“ He said a more realistic target would be 500,000 dwellings built in the next three to five years.

“The Greens and the Australian Council of Social Services have a policy of one million homes. This is where we need to be within five to seven years,“ Mr Fitzgerald said.

He said although more homes need to be built, Help to Buy will play its part.

“The Labor party policy of 40 per cent government equity will definitely give the 10,000 young people targeted on low incomes an opportunity to enter the housing market,“ he said.

“The criticism of the scheme that somehow government holding equity somehow disenfranchises these young people is a nonsense.

“It is far better to live in your own home paying it off with government equity than paying a private landlord up to $36,000 per annum for rent.“ CoreLogic’s Research Director Tim Lawless said anyone considering the scheme should be aware of the risks associated with buying on such a small deposit.

“Being able to share up to 40 percent of the purchase price with the government, along

with only a small deposit and opportunity to save on lenders mortgage insurance, helps to overcome several of the hurdles of home ownership,” he said.

“Keeping in mind buyers will still have to fund their transactional costs, including stamp duties, legal costs and bank fees.

“With the housing market probably heading into a downturn over the coming year or years, some buyers may find their home is worth less than the debt held against it.“ Insufficient land release and restrictive town planning policies will also be addressed

by Labor as part of an expanded remit for the reframed National Housing Finance and Investment Corporation (renamed Housing Australia).

Battin slams Andrews Government over ESTA review

By Eleanor Wilson Shadow Minister for Emergency services Brad Battin said he “feels for the families” wrapped up in a class action investigation by law firm Slater and Gordon.

On Tuesday 24 May the Melbourne law firm announced it was investigating a class action against the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA), which is responsible for answering triple-zero calls in Victoria and dispatching medical care to critically injured and ill patients.

It comes after a review by former Victoria Police chief commissioner Graham Ashton found at least 12 Victorians, including children, have died since October while waiting for an ambulance.

Mr Battin, who has been outspoken in the past about the Andrews Labor Government’s handling of ESTA, said families have been “pushed into a corner” as a result of ESTA’s under performance.

“The simple answer is the government

The law firm’s own investigations suggest that thousands of other emergency callers have experienced avoidable and unaccept-

able delays in their calls being answered, as well as delays in ambulances being dispatched.

It is investigating whether those who have been let down by ESTA’s call handling services are entitled to compensation.

Following Mr Ashton’s review, which put forward 20 recommendations to overhaul ESTA, the government announced it would disband ESTA’s board and rebrand it as ‘Triple Zero Victoria’.

But Mr Battin argued emergency service organisations held concern about ESTA’s capabilities for years, yet the State Government “chose to do nothing about it” until now.

“They were made aware of it and the government made the decision to ignore that for so many years,” Mr Battin said.

Slater and Gordon class actions Senior Associate Gemma Leigh-Dodds said systemic failures in how ESTA has run its core call answering and dispatch operations date back to 2014.

“ESTA’s critical role means its shortcom-

ings are not just unfortunate, we believe they have led to multiple deaths and injuries that could have been prevented,” she said.

This year’s State Budget included a record $333 million to recruit and train an additional 400 ESTA staff, build a better support and surge capability for busy times, provide further well being support to look after front line workers, and support further IT and security system upgrades.

Catholic teachers shine Outstanding staff from local Catholic schools were recognised for their commitment to Catholic Education at the Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Ltd (DOSCEL) Leadership Dinner on Friday 27 May. Two teachers from St Francis Xavier College Beaconsfield and one from St Clare’s Catholic Primary School Officer received awards for excellence.

Simon Cuckson from St Francis Xavier College received a prestigious Spirit of Catholic Education Inspiring Faith award.

The award recognised Simon’s exemplary work in leading a successful youth leadership and personal development program for many years at St Francis Xavier College. He has continued to develop new ways to inspire faith development in students, leading Retreats for Year 11 and 12 students and extra curricula opportunities such as the Berwick Soup Van. Paul Kimonides received a Service Award in recognition of 25 years or more of service to Australian Catholic education.

Paul has been at St Francis Xavier College for 25 years and has been a leader in advancing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning. He is currently teaching Religious Education and Systems to broaden his career.

Carol Brown of St Clare’s Catholic Primary School at Officer received a Spirit of Catholic Education Inspiring Learning award.

Carol has worked in Catholic schools in the Diocese for many years at St James Primary School at Nar Nar Goon, Mary MacKillop Primary School at Narre Warren and more recently St Clare’s Primary School at Officer.

She has been instrumental in promoting literacy and learning and working with staff to develop comprehensive Personal Learning Plans for students with disabilities.

By Eleanor Wilson Throughout the month of June, Casey Cardinia Libraries is encouraging locals to drop in a can of food or two for its annual Food Drive.

Partnering with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s Foodbank, which feeds around 1000 individuals, the drive aims to collect non-perishable goods for refugees in need.

In Australia, people with refugee status often have limited income and working rights, making them vulnerable to food insecurity.

Casey Cardinia Libraries customer experience officer Sam Benton said she originally suggested the Food Drive as a way to promote and support Refugee Week, which runs in the month of June.

Ms Benton said she hopes the second annual Food Drive will be bigger and better than ever.

“Last year was tricky because we were in lock down for more than half of June, so what we did collect was very generous,” she said.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

Disability plan launched

By Jamie Salter A new Disability Action Plan is laying out the path to building a more accessible shire for all.

The official launch of the Cardinia Shire’s Access and Inclusion Disability Strategy and Action Plan 2021-2026 took place at Cardinia Life on Thursday 26 May. The plan will see future infrastructure built with inclusion at the front of mind.

The event also marked the opening of the Cardinia Life Changing Places toilet and change room.

Changing Places has provided 211 suitable facilities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

Cardinia Shire’s Access and Inclusion Committee councillor Tammy Radford said she was proud to be able to share the Disability Strategy and Action Plan.

“This is certainly a plan do be proud of that talks about what Cardinia Shire can do to be more accessible and inclusive,” she said.

“People with a disability are part of every segment of our community and deserve to be supported in an equitable manner.

“We asked people to share their ideas on how the shire can be more accessible for all and their ideas have influenced this plan.”

She said her number one goal was to see a Changing Places facility in the Officer town centre.

There were 655 comments and suggestions received as a result of the community consultation period, with the Cardinia Access and Inclusion Advisory Committee helping to shape the action plan.

Committee member Michael Wright said it was great to officially release the plan to the community.

“Inclusion and accessibility allows everyone to take part and feel a part of the community,” Mr Wright said.

The launch event was held at Cardinia Life.

Staff care at St Clare’s

Promoting the whole child

Recently the students at St Clare’s were very excited to participate in their Annual Fun Run using the new extension to the playground for the very first time.

The students have been patiently watching the progress of the architecturally designed playground for over a year. The new area includes a ropes course, soccer and football field, shade and cover seating areas, passive play spaces and plenty of new grass where students can run.

This area provides a great facility for Physical Education lessons and opportunities for shared learning experiences in a beautiful outdoor environment. Further developments include an Indigenous Garden and outdoor classroom. This is due for completion in the next few months.

St Clare’s students are particularly enjoying exploring the ‘Ninja’ playground and surrounding play areas.

At St Clare’s they nurture the holistic development of each child. For the St Clare’s family, numeracy and literacy skills are core elements of education; but so is Religious Education - developing empathy, social justice and a strong moral compass. Melina Bath MP is encouraging local football netball clubs to apply for road safety grants. 282011

Police have arrested two men two men driving a vehicle with alleged false registration plates following a pursuit throughout the South Eastern suburbs on Friday morning, 20 May. The Air Wing assisted local police in arresting the pair after they allegedly failed to stop and travelled at high speeds in a 2007 Holden Caprice with false plates on the Princes Highway, Narre Warren around 1am, shortly after it allegedly evaded police.

The Air Wing followed the Holden through a number of suburbs including Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Tooradin, and on major roads including the Monash Freeway and South Gippsland Highway, police say.

At one stage the vehicle was allegedly detected travelling at 150km/h in a 100km/h zone.

The vehicle then came to a stop on Drouin Korumburra Road in Athlone around 2am.

The male driver and male passenger exited the vehicle and were arrested at the scene.

A 21-year-old Pakenham man and a 31-year-old Long Gully man are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

Police have asked anyone with information, who witnessed the incident or with dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report online at crimestoppersvic.com.au

Local football and netball clubs are being encouraged to apply for road safety grants as part of the TAC Club Rewards Programs.

Clubs have the opportunity to earn up to $10,000 in funding by promoting road safety to their community.

The grants are now on offer for all AFL Victoria aligned clubs across Victoria.

Nationals Member for Eastern Victoria Region Melina Bath said road safety was an important issue that needed ongoing discussion.

“Road safety is about creating awareness, teaching people to drive to conditions and helping drivers to understand dangers involved,” Ms Bath said.

“Unfortunately, our country roads are not maintained to the same standard as metropolitan roads and young people travelling long distances are at risk each time they get in the car to attend sport.

“It’s important to be proactively talking about the issues of speed, drink driving, fatigue, distractions, vehicle safety and young drivers through our local sporting clubs.”

Local clubs will have the chance to implement a program that they run each year to keep players, volunteers and officials informed around road safety.

Ms Bath said it was a great way to help young people learn about risks and become better drivers.

“There are lots of initiatives clubs could deliver including information nights, posters, social media, mentoring of young drivers, shuttle buses, designated driver incentives, scoreboard messaging and hosting a road

Joeys deliver for Kangas

But for Officer, its first win of the 2022 season is worth oh so much more than that.

After a turbulent opening seven weeks of the season, the Roos put it all aside to come away with a confidence boosting 17.9 (111) to 11.11 (77) win on the road over Mt Evelyn.

It certainly didn’t come easy, as a selection of outs and a slow start saw Officer concede four of the opening six majors.

But a quick recoup at quarter-time saw the visitors fire off five straight majors in the second to eventually take a lead into the main break.

Interim coach Anthony Bernardo kicked three goals for the match, as did Riley Clark and Sean Roach.

Kangas skipper Ben O’Loughlin revealed just how big the win was for the entire club, while admitting the team song – though sung with gusto – was an average attempt at a circle.

“It means a lot to the whole club to be honest,” he said.

“Of the people that played on the weekend, I think there were about 15 or so with under 50 games of senior footy.

“We were in games (in the first six weeks); we got ourselves into good positions and couldn’t go on with it, so it was good to finally get one on the board.

“It is a bit different this year, just adjusting to teaching the young blokes about senior footy and that you don’t have a chance to slack off, you have to be on 100 per cent of the time.

“I think we had more blokes inside the huddle than outside the huddle, it was good to see the smiles again.”

The win now has Officer a win clear from Upwey Tecoma at the bottom of the AFL Outer East Premier Division ladder.

At the other end of that ladder, Wandin leap-frogged Pakenham into second place, with the Bulldogs proving too strong around the contest in the 19.18 (132) to 15.11 (101) win over the Lions.

Dogs spearhead Clinton Johnson kicked another eight majors for the winning side.

Narre Warren simply did as it has done all year, thumping Olinda Ferny Creek 21.15 (141) to 10.17 (77).

Monbulk continued to gain a bit of momentum with a cantering win over Upwey Tecoma.

The Hawks led at every change in the 13.14 (92) to 8.9 (57) victory.

Monbulk sit just percentage behind Olinda Ferny Creek outside of the five now.

With its short history in mind, Berwick Springs’ win over Healesville on the weekend is arguably the best the club has recorded.

The Titans came into the match at Mick Morland Reserve just two points behind their upcoming opponent and – more importantly – outside the four.

And while the importance of the clash didn’t escape the home side, the Titans were caught napping in the first term, allowing Healesville

to boot seven goals to their two.

A typically resilient and bubbly Rodney Benstead admittedly wasn’t himself at the quarter-time address, as he made sure his side was aware of his disdain surrounding the lack of effort.

“You’re reluctant to put too much pressure on them, but it was, it was a defining game for us,” he said.

“For them to kick seven goals to our two was pretty disappointing and it was probably the second real bake I have given them at quarter-time.

“I was extremely disappointed with the discipline and the commitment and all of those sort of things, but as a club we have grown and I had a lot of belief so I told them we can win the next three quarters and win this game, but it starts at the contest.

“That’s what they did, we played our brand of football and once we get rolling we’re pretty hard to stop.”

The Titans responded accordingly, kicking 15 goals to the Bloods four after the first change, to ultimately come away with a stunning 17.14 (116) to 11.11 (77) win.

The win was highlighted by a sensational specky from livewire forward Tom Nelson.

While the footage and images of Nelson’s cloud-brushing climb are jaw-dropping, Benstead believes it was far, far more impressive live.

“You had to be there,” he said.

“I had my under-12’s there, I coach the under-12’s too, and I saw it and the photos and videos don’t do it justice because he just got up that high.

“It’s as good a mark I have seen at local footy. Being live it took your breath away, good on you Tommy.

“He is an exciting young player and we have a few kids in that boat that can turn that on, that’s what you want local footy to be about, give the fans some of that excitement.

“I was happy to bring that up at half-time, because I think moments (like that) are really important and you should celebrate them.”

The win for the Titans boosts them inside the Division 1 top four.

In other results across Division 1: Seville smacked Belgrave 17.20 (122) to 8.3 (51) and Emerald scooted to a comfortable win over Yarra Glen 14.12 (96) to 9.7 (61).

Drought breaks for rejuvenated Pakenham United Pakenham’s defensive record is the second best in the competition, showing the benefits of McCafferty’s experience and structure.

Bunyip, meanwhile, remains two points clear of Pakenham despite giving up a 2-0 lead against Aspendale.

Daniel Biondo and Liam Lenders put the Strikers two clear at the half, before Sam Timuska-Carr cut the margin in the 49th minute of play.

Blake Rosenberg then levelled the score just four minutes later before the game fizzled out to a draw.

Pakenham United is back to its exciting and damaging best after making light work of Mount Martha in a 4-0 drubbing at IYU Reserve on Saturday.

United, who put five past Hampton Park United last week, is regaining strength after its early season was hit hard by illness, injuries and suspension.

Pakenham still finds itself 10 points outside of the promotion zone, but is making ground rapidly after claiming six points from its last two matches.

And a game this week against a struggling second-last placed Rosebud could see United close that gap even further.

Pakenham struck early on Saturday, with Danny Di Vito hitting the back of the net after 10 minutes of play.

Di Vito, Steve Ngoneh and Daniel Vigilante were in everything for United early, while star-striker Sash Saric was just biding his time waiting for the right opportunity.

Vigilante doubled United’s lead in the 27th minute as the home side sailed into the break with a comfortable 2-0 advantage.

Pakenham maintained its two-goal lead until the 80th minute, when Saric struck the first of two blows to make the game safe at 3-0.

Young Warriors on fire

By Jonty Ralphsmith The Pakenham Warriors Championship Women and division two men team’s each recorded losses on the weekend.

But it was better news for the men’s and women’s youth league teams with a three-nil clean-sweep of the opposition.

The Championship Women team lost an important middle-of-the-table clash with Sunbury…being behind from the outset after being overpowered in the first quarter.

By halftime the Warriors were down by 23 points and although the screws were tightened in the second half, it was still a 21-point loss for the women.

Haille Nickerson hit the scoreboard in typical fashion with 27 points – the only Pakenham player to register double figures.

The women will look to rebound this week when they host McKinnon at 6pm this Saturday at Cardinia Life.

The men – who used just seven players, compared to their opponents’ 12 – were overrun by table-topping Gippsland in the last quarter.

In a game of lead changes, where the lead was seemingly never beyond five points, Gippsland broke away from Pakenham at the end of the last stanza to record an 89-80 victory.

Usual suspects Joe Davis (29 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists) and Ned Weideman (21 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists) were each important for the Warriors.

They will be back in action next weekend against Maccabi (4-10) and Melton (1-11).

There was more success for the women in the youth league who pulled away from Eltham in a strong third quarter to record a 70-64 win.

They backed it up the following day with a 90-64 win against McKinnon.

Across the weekend Rhiannon Gallagher scored 30 points and Alahna Arnason contributed 28 points.

The victories see the Warriors even the ledger at 7-7, elevating them to fifth with a game against sixth-placed Camberwell up next.

The youth league men overcome an eight point halftime deficit to win by four points against Albury-Wodonga to make the long trip worthwhile and give them a 9-2 season record.

Jarred Small scored 19 points for the Warriors, with Dylan Jenkinson (18), Michael Johns (15) and Jackson grey (12) also making valuable contributions.

Next up is an away clash with Melton at 6pm this Saturday.

Eels brave against the best

By David Nagel Comely Banks Recreation Reserve – the flash new home of the Pakenham Eels – came alive on Saturday as the locals hosted teams from Mernda, Sunbury and Truganina in some red-hot Rugby League action.

The competition has reached round five in the Storm Junior League season, while round nine of the Storm Premiership Second Grade Men’s competition saw the Eels host a young and hungry team from the Sunbury Tigers.

The Tigers speed and ball movement proved too great for the Eels defence, with the visitors running in seven tries to one in a comprehensive 34-4 victory.

Ronan Gould and Nehumi Teu scored twice each for the Tigers, while singles to Manny Vili, Jake Fox and Zavier Tetevano saw the game taken away from the Eels in very impressive fashion.

Typically, Pakenham did fight the game out to the final siren with Charlie Ropiani driving in the home side’s only score for the match.

The seniors will be hoping to turn things

The under-15 girls had the bye this week, while the under-15 boys hosted a switched on and highly-organised unit from Truganina.

The side continues to grow in confidence and were able to show much determination, coming out in the second half and moving the ball well and scoring against a well-structured defensive outfit.

Carlos Selio, Andy Frierdich and Rawiri Stonehouse ran in some quality tries for the Eels.

Laetisha bound for home draped in bronze from Baku

By David Nagel The long journey from St Margaret’s in Berwick to the biggest stages in world shooting has continued for Laetisha Scanlan after claiming a bronze medal in the Women’s Trap in the ISSF World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Coming off the back of her silver medal winning performance at the ISSF Grand Prix in Granada, Spain, only a week prior, Scanlan was top qualifier in Baku, missing just six of 125 targets on the way to a score of 119.

She tied with Spaniard Fatima Galvez, and after a shoot-off, was ranked second where she progressed to the semi-final stage, Ranking Match 2.

Finland’s Noora Antikainen and Scanlan progressed to the medal match after scoring 23 and 22 respectively.

Scanlan, a three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist who finished fourth at the Olympics in Tokyo last year, hit 22 of 25 targets in the final to claim the bronze medal.

“Our European tour is coming to an end, it’s been almost seven weeks away,” she said.

“I’ve learnt some really valuable lessons throughout this journey and I’m really lucky and fortunate to have so many competitions within the seven weeks.

“I’m really happy to finish off at a world cup…and medalling.”

Scanlan will have the opportunity to add to her extensive medal haul with the Trap Mixed Teams and Trap Team events still to come later this week.

Scanlan will not get the chance to defend her back-to-back crowns at the Commonwealth Games, with shooting not part of the program in Birmingham this year.

But the now 32-year-old may set her sights on the 2026 Commonwealth Games…to be held in her home state of Victoria.
