Medal awarded

By Tyler Wright Officer in Charge at Monbulk Police Station, Luke Schroder, was “surprised” when he heard he had been awarded Victoria Police’s Medal for Courage several months after an event that shook the town.

“I don’t think it’s anything that anybody else wouldn’t have done, I’m pretty sure most of us would have done the same in [those] circumstances,” Sergeant Schroder said.

Sgt Schroder is referring to the catastrophic blaze which erupted on 28 June 2020, resulting in the death of beloved 96 year old Jacoba Vegt.

“I was just finishing up work, looking at the back door where I could hear and see a large fire over the back fence of the police station… so I ran around knowing there was an old lady who lived there,” Sgt Schroder said.

“The house was already fully engulfed and the flames were through the roof so I ran around, kicked a few doors in with the help of somebody else who was passing by…we managed to clear most of the rooms but couldn’t get into the kitchen area, it was too intense.”

The loss of this Monbulk great-grandmother did not just reach the sergeant on a professional level but a personal one, too.

“We grew up with that family…I used to see her walking past the police station every day, so that was a bit hard,” he said.

The Victorian Police Medal for Courage is awarded to an employee who has performed an ‘act of courage in fulfillment of their duties in dangerous and volatile operational circumstances,’ and it was a Detective Sergeant from the Arson Squad who nominated the hills local.

Devoting the past 19 years to the police force, the policeman was able to attend the ceremony with his parents and grandfather who he said were “proud as punch” to attend and witness the achievement.

Award recipients were honoured at the Victoria Police Academy in Glen Waverley on Thursday 19 May, including Leading Senior Constable Andrew Trace from Knox Highway Patrol.

Recipients received both a medal and a certificate in acknowledgment of their efforts.

“I love the town, and I naturally want to do as much as I can for the town,” Sgt Schroder said.

Art to return to Country

Wurundjeri elders and descendents of William Barak are rejoicing after hearing the news that two of his artworks will be returning to Country after successful bids at a New York auction.

The rare artworks known as Corroboree (Women in possum skin cloaks) and Parrying Shield were made by the Aboriginal leader in 1897.

Sotheby’s, a New York auction house, put the works up for bidding on Wednesday 25 May at 4pm New York time.

Great, great, great niece of Barak, Jacqui Wandin said she was anxious waiting to hear the results of the auction having missed the part where Barak’s works were live streamed.

“There was that feeling of who bought it?

Where is it? Almost like your family or a child.

You want to know where it is and if it is safe. So that was a little bit of an anxious time, “I then called my dad Alan Wandin and then he said, ‘Yep, it’s been bought by Wurundjeri’.

So everyone’s just over the moon. We could not be any more happy.”

Having crowdfunded $120,000 via the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation GoFundMe page, it wasn’t enough to secure the works.

The Victorian government has announced it was proud to support the Wurundjeri Corporation in its effort by contributing $500,000, making the bidding a success.

“The Labor Government is proud to support the successful bid to bring artworks which are invaluable to the Wurundjeri Woiwurrung People – back to their rightful home and owners,” Creative Industries minister Danny Pearson said.

“William Barak has had a profound impact on Victoria’s cultural heritage, with his contribution as an ambassador and advocate for his people continuing to have an impact today.”

Aboriginal Affairs minister Gabrielle Williams said these works will be returning to where they rightfully belong.

“We congratulate the Wurundjeri on their success in fighting for and securing this important piece of history, which is invaluable to the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung People, and to the broader Victorian public,” she said.

With over 1000 people contributing to the fundraising efforts, as well as the government support, Jacqui said it was important to recognise that there were a lot of “players involved in getting these beautiful artworks back.”

“We can’t thank people enough for stepping up and saying ‘this was the right thing to do. It’s now time. We need to celebrate William Barak more’,” she said.

Jacqui said these artworks speak of the time in Barak’s life in the 1880s and 1890s when his wife and son had already passed but he was focused on sharing and passing on the history to his descendants.

“He made sure he did these paintings to depict what was actually going on in Country,” she said.

“He did this work for our survival, because at that stage a lot of people would have died out and Barak died in 1903, he was about 85 years old. So that was his way of capturing anything that he thought that would be lost.

“We were told that we couldn’t speak our language, we couldn’t do our hunting, we couldn’t use traditional medicines or anything like that. He was just trying to give the information to us knowing that it may not have survived.”

Barak’s artworks formed a collection, telling the history of Wurundjeri using Earth pigments and charcoal mostly seen throughout many of the works placed at the National Gallery in Victoria.

The shield itself represents Aboriginal lore and custom, particularly when someone entered Country.

“When someone would come onto Country and they realised they were all great persons, they would break their spears and then that couldn’t be used on them and that was a sign of friendship. The way I see the shields is they are a part of ceremony as well.”

Jacqui said with the artworks returning to Wurundjeri, where she expects they will join Barak’s other works at the National Gallery, she said it is time for people to learn about the man and the leader.

“When I first started reading about Barak, I just remember thinking, ‘Oh, my God, my uncle’s an amazing, honourable man and it’s a really proud day today.

“I think everything’s aligning at the moment and I think Barak’s really trying to tell his story. He’s trying to reawaken everyone.

We always say before we came back onto Coranderrk in 2000, the place had just been sleeping. “[We need] to keep Barak’s dream alive and it’s not just the Wurundjeri people, it’s everyone in Melbourne who really needs to find out more about Barak. He was a wonderful man in all different ways and he did everything in a peaceful way.”

Puffing Billy Playground ample space for fire training

By Tyler Wright New recruits of the Emerald Fire Brigade had had their hand at honing their search and rescue techniques while using Breathing Apparatus (BA) sets on Wednesday night.

The Puffing Billy Playground was used by the firefighters to familiarise themselves with specialised equipment carried on-board trucks; learning how to use them in real life scenarios.

“We try to get out as much as we can [so] we can be more visible for people to ask questions and maybe sign up to join us - and it also gives members a bit more local familiarity,” Lieutenant Ryan Lewis said.

“Playgrounds are great for simulation exercises…[they have] a lot more twists and turns and tunnels that add that layer of realism to training, especially [using] breathing apparatus,” Lieutenant Lewis said.

Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) incidents, where the air may be dangerous to breathe, or a house fire, where toxic smoke and gases present serious dangers to Firefighter health and welfare,’ an Emerald Fire Brigade post said.

Recruits begin as general firefighters training for bushfires and advance onto different increments and qualifications to use various types of equipment.

“There’s quite an emphasis on getting the theory side of things done as quickly and safely as possible, and then get [recruits] out onto jobs to pick up that real work experience,” Lewis said.

“We do other exercises where we use a big enclosed building and pump that full of smoke and simulate ventilation…but for general skills and maintenance, a playground is always a good option for us.”

May saw the introduction of Emerald Fire Brigade’s new management team, and as 2nd Lieutenant, Ryan Lewis is looking forward to seeing new recruits grow and expand their skills.

By Parker McKenzie With a surprising federal election result bringing Legalise Cannabis Australia within touching distance of a federal Senate seat, the party is now eyeing the Victorian state election as an opportunity to consolidate their new-found support.

Currently, Legalise Cannabis Australia is still an outside chance of taking the final senate seat in Queensland and Victoria against Pauline Hanson’s One Nation and United Australia Party or the Liberal Party respectively.

Victorian Senate candidate Elissa Smith — who grew up in Upwey and was a swimming instructor at Monbulk Aquatic Centre for eight years — said despite having a skeleton crew and a small budget at the beginning of the election, the result has been exciting for the party.

“They haven’t even looked at the preferences yet. We know from the volunteers that we had out there, quite a few people mentioned that they supported us but they put us second,” she said.

“Depending on how big the swing for minor parties was, in Victoria we’re still sitting on a sixth undecided seat.”

It’s the first time the party has run in an election since renaming from the HEMP Party in December 2021, after it was founded in 1993.

The party is currently behind the UAP by 1.1 per cent with 71.7 per cent of votes counted at time of printing. It has received 86,222 first

A potential Queensland senate seat win was also on the cards, as the party threatens to take the final senate seat off One Nation leader Pauline Hanson with 5.2 per cent of the first preference vote.

Ms Smith, who is number one on the Victorian Senate ticket, said the result boded well for the state election in November where micro-parties often win seats.

“We’re so excited about the response that we’ve got, but we need to follow that on and we need to build on that for the state campaign,” she said.

“We will be doing events in the lead up to get people to understand what our policies are and why we want these changes to come through to the state election as well.”

The party is running on policies including cannabis being treated the same as alcohol or tobacco, an immediate moratorium on all arrests for cannabis consumers, allowing people to grow their own plants and road laws to be amended to allow unimpaired medicinal users to drive with cannabis in their system, which has already been adopted in Tasmania.

Ms Smith said the major parties embracing the legalisation of cannabis in Australia would be life-changing for many people.

“We’ve got doctors and nurses that are out there using cannabis to stay in their job, but they’re terrified they’re going to lose it,” she said.

“People that have done so much in supporting people with cancer and epilepsy, I personally have Tourette syndrome and when you talk to someone who has Tourette syndrome or epilepsy, who has to fight their body being out of control 99 per cent of the day, it’s a different perception.”

The party saw an increase of +1.41 per cent in Victoria and +3.44 per cent in Queensland during the federal election and will be hoping this will translate to a strong showing in the November state election.

Grandmother lotto millionaire overnight A grandmother has won over a million dollars in TattsLotto after buying the winning ticket at an Upwey newsagency.

The Ferntree Gully resident said she would give the entire $1,114,916 division one winnings to her family.

“I’m in so much shock. Thank you very much! I’m bloody glad about this. I never register my ticket, so I didn’t find out until last night,” she said.

“I scanned my ticket so many times because it just seemed so shocking. I made my kids check it as well.”

The woman purchased the ticket at Upwey Newsagency, located at 18 Main Street Upwey.

Community consultation for the Active Cardinia Strategy is now open.

Through the draft plan, the council is aiming to improve, develop and provide quality infrastructure to support community sports.

Search and rescue training A member from Monbulk CFA spent the week at the CFA training ground undertaking a search and rescue training course.

The one-week, full-time intestine course upskills members in the knowledge and application of internal building firefighting and search and rescue techniques.

CFA members are required to learn techniques in full darkness and enter training buildings with real fire and smoke to rescue test dummies and distinguish the fire.

Montrose accident Traffic through Montrose was was brought to a slow crawl on Monday 23 April after a car accident occurred at the intersection of Swansea and Cambridge Roads.

Emergency service crews including police, CFA and Ambulance Victoria responded to the call-out around 7.50am.

“Firefighters found a car and truck had collided with one person needing to be released.” a CFA spokesperson said.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called shortly after to attend to the a person from the vehicle.

“A woman was taken to Maroondah Public Hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries,” a spokesperson said.

The incident was declared safe around 8.15am but cars heading both to and from Montrose were slowed down until the smashed Holden Commodore could be towed.

CFA placed an oil soaker on the road. The incident began to be cleared around 8.40am when the tow truck arrived.

Local sports grants now available Monbulk MP James Merlino has announced applications have opened for the 2022 Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

The fund — which was allocated $30 million in the recent Victorian state budget — invests funding into new and improved facilities for sports facilities, with $10 million dedicated to female-friendly facilities.

Mr Merlino said sport and active recreation is the heart and soul of local communities.

“I urge councils and sporting organisations to partner and apply for projects that will make a real difference to the lives of Victorians.” he said.

Path forward for healing

By Renee Wood The community has come together to acknowledge and mark the start of National Reconciliation Week, on National Sorry Day Thursday 26 May by joining a live streamed event arranged by Yarra Ranges Council and supported by Oonah Belonging Place.

‘Our Country, Our Future, Our Shared Responsibility’ was the key motto of the event and shared how both indigenous and nonindigenous people can come together to take action for reconciliation, which supports healing for all.

Wurundjeri woman Chenile Chandler began the day with a call to country performance, while Worimi, Biripi woman Nikki Madgwick, a Oonah Health and Community Services Aboriginal Coordinator, acknowledged country through Auslan.

The proceedings included touching performances, insightful interviews and highlighted locally based initiatives that are helping to strengthen and heal country for reconciliation.

Wurundjeri woman Brooke Wandin led the service with a welcome to country, sharing the importance of why we need to give respect and obey the language and land.

Ms Wandin reflected on how language can be emotional and transformative, highlighting how action can be taken through the National Reconciliation Week theme.

“Be brave, make change – what can that look like? It can be maybe re-writing your acknowledgement of country, it could be attending just that one extra wonderful event this week, perhaps you’re brave enough to face the truth of the missionary era. Perhaps you want to go see a film like Higher Ground or more recently The Drover’s Wife,” Ms Wandin said.

Wurundjeri man Darren Wandin conducted the smoking ceremony at Oonah Meeting Place Garden, explaining the two key elements – an invitation and medicine.

“The medicine I’d like to provide to you today is one that will allow you to feel comfortable in the space that you are in and essentially

feel safe that you’re here to enjoy the day and to let all those worries go from all those other commitments we have in life, just be part of the day and be present,” Mr Wandin said.

Mr Wandin also payed his respects to elders past and present.

“Without our ancestors we wouldn’t be here where we are today and it’s their journey that put us where we are today and I want us to take a chance to reflect on that and appreciate that journey that’s happened and respect that as we move forward in our lives.”

Larrikia man Ash Dargan, former member of the band Coloured Stone, was the first to perform, highlighting an important decade for reconciliation in the 1990s.

The recording artist and didgeridoo player shared his own personal experience during this time when the movement of reconciliation was awakening.

This was ignited by the seminal report of aboriginal deaths in custody that was released in 1991, which saw the federal government form the Council of Aboriginal Reconciliation.

“It gave them a 10 year charter to forward a report and reconcile Australia’s history, that is with First Nations Australians,” Mr Dargan said.

Mr Dargan was living in Queensland at the time and shared how changes to the adoption act allowed himself and many others to gain information about their families for the first time.

“In these 10 years when reconciliation became a movement, it gave us a compass to moving forward to start healing – because for 1000s and 1000s stolen mob we were starting to make our way home.”

Mr Dargan performed on the didgeridoo a song called ‘Many Voices’ representative of the spirit of reconciliation waking up in Australia.

“That’s the spirit of the Aboriginal people whose voice until that time had not been heard in that particular way and it was getting stronger and it was saying hey shine the light here and have a look at what’s been going on let’s start to make things right so that voice of reconciliation just a seed started to grow.”

The ‘Walk for Reconciliation’ in 1995 which

saw thousands of people march across the country was another pivotal point for healing in the 1990s.

“These are some of the experiences of the early times of those formative ten years and I hope that each and every one of you make the next ten years even more special and create more opportunities for continued healing of the aboriginal people that are making their way home but also for the healing of this soul of this country that we now share - that is the spirit of reconciliation,” he said.

Another important part of the live event was sharing council’s path for reconciliation and healing by embracing the Firesticks Alliance Indigenous Corporation which aims to re-invigorate, heal and educate communities through the use of cultural burning.

Mayor Jim Child said he believes it’s the most valuable tool to have at the moment for the reconciliation journey because we can all take part in it.

“The event today will provide insights into how we can all embrace the ancient wisdom of our land – look at our future and ignite a shared responsibility.. our country, our future, our shared responsibility,” Cr Jim Child said.

A video was shown of a previous gathering in Dixon’s Creek which included Darren Wandin, who’s been the Firestick Alliance Officer for the past twelve months.

He was joined by Leeton Lee, South East Queensland Firesticks co-ordinator and Victor Steffensen, indigenous fire practitioner. Darren Wandin said the small burns aren’t encouraged and are allowed to burn out and stop naturally. The burns are of ‘cool’ fires that produce white smoke and aren’t destructive to the soil.

“With agency burns they look at a place and say we want 100 per cent coverage we want to burn the whole lot – that’s too much… It’s too much in one go so we allow the fires to spread out and do their small burns let it do its thing and that’s part of country telling us what it needs to do to make itself feel better,” Mr Wandin said.

Mr Steffensen said it’s a practice that listens

to country and teaches people how to read the landscape and language to know how to promote healing.

“There is a language in the land and that language is coming from the country which is alive and talking to us all the time and when you see the land like this then it reflects who we are it’s a reflection of yourself,” Mr Steffensen said.

“When we see the land with no food and all leaf and we see all the thickness in the country and all sick and weedy that reflects us as society as people, so the country’s always talking to us and once we get a healthy landscape our society is going to be amazing.

“It’s amazing what it does for people who have problems that can help solve and the loss of identity, so this is so important for aboriginal people and it’s so important for all people.”

Oonah Belonging Place played a significant role in delivering the event, which in 2022 has doubled its workforce to deliver a range of programs, services and support for a holistic model of care. It’s a space for connecting, learning and healing for ingenious and non-indigenous community to come together for reconciliation.

Oonah Coordinator Nikki Madgwick was one of the MCs for the event and shared the history of Oonah which was first known as Healesville Indigenous Community Services Association (HICSA).

The service is underpinned by a deep connection to aboriginal culture and has a vision to become a dedicated aboriginal community controlled health organisation in the east of Melbourne. Ms Madgwick asked for support and funding contributions to see this vision come true, to continue to heal body, spirit and culture locally.

“We want to deliver high quality health care from a holistic approach addressing those gaps between non indigenous and indigenous peoples – we want to look at how we can provide healthcare services, specialists services, programs, activities and events that help to heal spirit body and connection to culture,” Ms Madgwick said.

these beautiful message sticks, and the high school students have then taken their own interpretation with some beautiful dolls and photography,” Cardinia Shire Council’s Hills Hub Placemaker Anna Benjamin said.

“I really wanted to acknowledge reconciliation week, and I wanted to do it together with the community; with the schools and the teachers,” Ms Benjamin said.

Each school was awarded with a certificate of appreciation for their work.

By Callum Ludwig Following on from Adam Goodes’ appearance in 2021’s Our Country, Our Future, Our Shared Responsibility event hosted by Yarra Ranges Council for National Reconciliation Week, the man Mr Goodes praised spoke in the 2022 edition.

Paul Roos was Mr Goodes coach from 2002 to 2010, consisting of most of his playing career, and Mr Goodes said he was the person who has given him the most cultural safety and spiritual support.

Mr Roos said the transition from semiprofessionalism to full-time professionals afforded coaches like himself the time to get to know players, and that was the foundation of his relationship with Mr Goodes and other players.

“If I wanted to be a really good coach and wanted to provide a safe haven and environment whether it was for Adam Goodes, Mick (Michael) O’Loughlin, Brett Kirk or Jarrad McVeigh, I really had to get to know the person,” he said.

“I did Australian history in Year 12, a long time ago now, I’m 58 and that was in ‘79 or ‘80, and there was not one thing on the Indigenous culture. I couldn’t believe it as I

wrote in The Guardian that former captain Stuart Maxfield got the ball rolling on the ‘Bloods Culture’ in 2002 and 2003 when the club began using the ‘Leading Teams’ model to establish player-set values.

Mr Roos said when you are in a culture, you are part of it and don’t really notice changes, the same way a parent doesn’t notice their child is getting bigger.

“I would encourage everyone to ask the newest person ‘Have you created a safe space for everyone?’ and ask it honestly, if there’s a bit of a pause and a deep breath, then you know you haven’t,” he said.

“It’s a really good way of defining from an inclusive point of view, ask the question.

What does our culture look like? Is it safe?

Do you feel comfortable talking about your background? Whether it’s from an Indigenous community on the Yarra River or the Murray or your parents have arrived from Croatia in the 1960’s.”

The interview was conducted by Nelson Aldridge, Taungurung man, member of the Yarra Ranges Council Indigenous Development Team and Vice-Captain of the Warburton-Millgrove Senior Football side. Reconciliation will continue from Friday 17 May to Friday June 3.

Mr Roos won the Sydney Swans their first premiership in 72 years in 2005 before also taking them to the 2006 Grand Final in which they lost. Mr Goodes won two Brownlows under his coach and mentor in 2003 and 2006.

Mr Roos said the safer a space you can create, the more organically reconciliation and integration occurred.

“That was the strength of the environment, the Indigenous players just felt safe, that they could speak up and talk about it,” he said.

Knox City Council unveiled a new yarning circle during their National Sorry Day ceremonies on Thursday 26 May. The event started with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Colin Hunter, followed by a fire lighting and smoking ceremony by Yorta Yorta Bunerong man Chris Hume.

Knox Mayor Susan Laukens said recognising Sorry Day is a step towards healing.

“As the Mayor of Knox City Council, I am sorry. As the local government, we are sorry,” she said.

“On Sorry Day we apologise for the past, and we reaffirm our commitment to healing, acknowledgment and respect of First Nations people.” There are an estimated 1500 Aboriginal and First Nations people living in Knox.

Mayor Laukens said Council understand that hard work is needed to heal the community, and they are committed to supporting reconciliation in practical and symbolic ways.

“Last year, in collaboration with our local Aboriginal community, we agreed to five key areas of focus: health and wellbeing, recognition and respect, employment and economic development, civic participation, and cultural heritage,” she said.

“The yarning circle at our Civic Centre is one idea that came out of those discussions. It will be a place of truth-telling and healing conversations.”

First People’s Assembly of Victoria member and Commissioner of the Victorian Environmental Water Holder Reuben Berg, a Gunditjmara man, was a guest speaker at the event.

Larrakia artist from the Top end Ash Dargan performed on the Didgeridoo followed by a Dungala Dance performance.

The event finished with a leaf and branch ceremony and flag raising.

Sorry Day has been held as an annual event in Australia on 26 May since 1998 to mark the start of Reconciliation Week.

The Hills Hub in Emerald has hosted its first National Reconciliation Week event since its opening in 2020, welcoming local school children and a Wurundjeri Elder to celebrate the coming together of cultures.

Uncle Ian Hunter began the event with a smoking ceremony surrounded by students from Menzies Creek Primary School, Emerald Primary School and Emerald Secondary College, Gembrook Primary School, Cockatoo Primary School, CFA members and Victoria Police.

Displaying bark to the crowd, the Wurundjeri Elder explained the origin of the word Wurundjeri - ‘Wurun;’ meaning Manna Gum found along the Yarra River.

“If you were really observant, you might have actually seen the outer casing of a grub that had just come out of those holes and turned into a moth - a triangular shaped moth.. They were called ‘Djeri’ - we put those two words together,” Uncle Ian Hunter said.

The other word, Willum, actually means bark - and what did the Aboriginal people make their houses out of? Bark…”

So it not only means bark, but it also means ‘house’ or ‘living’.”

Storm planning shared

By Tyler Wright Dandenong Ranges locals are looking at how to best recover and regroup after last year’s devastating storms ripped through the hills and nearby areas.

Yarra Ranges Council commenced their ‘Lessons Learned’ education sessions on Tuesday at Monbulk RSL alongside emergency management groups to help the community better understand the processes of organisations such as the SES, Victoria Police and Emergency Management Victoria response to weather disasters.

Lisa Keedle, Executive Officer for Emergency Management with Yarra Ranges Council said “community voice” inspired the sessions in Monbulk, Mount Dandenong and Mount Evelyn.

“Community relief mobilization, aspects around what the statements are also taken from community consultation placed last year; there’ll be themes around how to support community, how to support generator rollout, traffic management and supporting vulnerable people,” Ms Keedle said.

VICSES Assistance Chief Officer Ray Jasper spoke at the meeting and said the SES had around 15,900 storm-related callouts which did not include sustained work with energy companies, telecommunications companies or impact assessment support.

He also said it is “very rare” to get the southeasterly wind event the Dandenong Ranges experienced last year which did not just ravage the ranges, but the wider Yarra Valley.

“We had significant issues with responder agencies attracting people from rural areas due to Covid; they were really nervous in that space… and we could not use interstate resources…we couldn’t get an exemption to the 14 day quarantine,” Mr Jasper said of the June storm.

“Looking at our own platforms for emergency operations... all of our agencies involved will do a short sharp working safely during a storm operations course.”

Part of the SES learnings will come from the Emergency Management Victoria’s community and operational report expected to be handed down soon - the process of which was touched on by organisation representatives.

“We utilised all that data that came through from local government, we had debriefs internally with our emergency management staff; we had a group of external researchers conduct surveys with community members across the period as well...and we were able to get

some direct feedback from the community” EMV representative Lisa said.

“We had about 2000 observations - lots of data to pull together to identify those trends,” another representative Claire said.

“Capability and resource management, safety and wellbeing and intel and information flow were the top three insights.”

A representative from Yarra Ranges Council’s Emergency Management Response Team said while council is not a first responder with “lights and sirens”, it does play a coordinator role and provides community relief after storms.

“We had 154 staff that were in and out supporting that emergency response relief support,” the representative said.

Picture: TYLER WRIGHT After every emergency incident, council creates an independent review to detail how its’ response was effective and how it could improve moving forward. There were 170 recommendations which arose from this particular review, with some common themes, the council representative said.

“Both internal and external communications... we do need some other ways to get information out and communicate,” she said.

“Our data management...likewise our finance systems ensuring we can actually make decisions and put things in place to aquire services as soon as we can...

Set up human systems and services but also ensuring that there’s tight management [around the response].”

Months on, still damaged

By Parker McKenzie Speaking at a recent Knox City Council Meeting, Upper Ferntree Gully Football Club’s vice president has expressed his frustration with a lack of progress in fixing damage to the pavilion at Kings Park, 11 months after it was damaged by a faulty roof.

Craig Bridle asked the council if any insurance claim had been lodged and if any money from the claim had been allocated to the repairs during question time on Monday 23 May. “The affiliated clubs have been patient throughout the process, however, there has been a lack of clarity and council responses, and continued elusiveness in providing specific measurable deadlines which is disappointing,” he said.

“For eleven months we have been without rooms following the water damage from a faulty roof and subsequent mould. We are currently in marquees situated in the car park as we head into Melbourne’s harsh winter cold.”

Local sports teams have been unable to use the facilities at Kings Park since June 16 2021, after a leak in the roof caused mould to spread throughout the clubrooms.

Mr Bridle said the situation has impacted the club financially and created morale and member retention issues due to frustration with the situation.

“Given that the clubrooms at Upper Ferntree Gully have been damaged and have been unable to be used for the past 11 months, and in the absence of any clear direction or progress from council, my question is in regards to the insurance on the pavilion,” Mr Bridle said.

“Was there an insurance claim lodged by Knox City Council to the insurer, and if so has the council received any monies and has these monies been allocated to reinstate the club room?”

Mayor Susan Laukens said she would refer the question to Knox City Council’s director of infrastructure Grant Thorne.

“I just want to acknowledge that we are all aware of the unfortunate situation you are in,”

Mayor Laukens said.

“We do appreciate the club working with council and we are aware it is not an ideal situation.”

Mr Thorne said council officers are continuing to talk to and meet club representatives, having provided several updates to presidents.

“It’d be good if we could work through how that information is being dispersed throughout the club,” he said.

“In regards to the matter of the insurance claim, like with any property damage council officers are in contact with our insurers and discuss any potential claims and continue to do so.”

Earlier in the meeting, Mr Thorne told a representative from Upper Ferntree Gully Cricket Club, who share the facilities at Kings Park, money had been allocated from a program titled replacement of components for all Council owned buildings and funding was ensured independent of any insurance claim.

“We have had discussions with council officers who said they do not foresee any delays to cricket season and any delays will be communicated as soon as possible and as reasonably possible,” he said.

“Can the council confirm the advice from officers that the Upper Ferntree Gully Cricket Club tenancy will be available in October 2022?”

Mr Thorne said council would provide a further update when a contractor was assigned to the job.

“In regards to the timing of the works, I understand there was an update provided to representatives last week of both the football and cricket clubs,” Mr Thorne said.

“This update indicated that although completion in October is achievable, until such time you actually have the contractor on board we won’t know whether that is confirmed or not.”

Brave Elliot meets heroes

By Mikayla van Loon When three-year-old Elliott Pawley got his fingers stuck in a seat at Upwey train station, dad Heath was quick to respond by calling the CFA. Being able to reunite young Elliot with his four CFA heroes on Friday 27 May, both Heath and his son were incredibly grateful for the quick response and help given in a fairly traumatising situation.

Catching the train home to Boronia from childcare around 5pm on Monday 23 May, Heath said there weren’t too many people at the platform, so when panic set in the easiest thing to do was call for assistance.

“I just went straight for the Fireman Sam move, the catch all call to the CFA. When I was on the phone he was a little bit distressed but what was really nice, because up here if there’s anything that happens with the CFA the siren goes off,” he said.

“So we heard that straightaway and it was great because that was almost instantaneous and we were able to say Fireman Sam’s coming to help us, he’s coming to save the day.

“Elliot stopped crying and was just waiting and looking, he heard the siren and then we got all the cavalry down here with the CFA.” Heath said in total it took about eight minutes for the CFA crew to respond and release Elliot’s fingers from the seat.

Upwey CFA captain Cliff Pancutt said no matter what size job, big or small, the CFA will be there to help in whatever way they can.

“It’s not the first job we’ve actually been called to here at the railway station and unfortunately, little tykes do get their hands into places where we as parents wouldn’t like them to but it’s all part of bringing up kids I suppose,” he said.

“So it’s not the first time and it probably won’t be the last time but again everyone at the brigade is happy to come out and help.”

Upwey CFA captain Cliff Pancutt gave little Elliot Pawley a chocolate frog treat when they reunited on Friday 27 May.

CFA members were able to easily remove Elliot’s fingers as quickly as possible knowing the longer it took the more traumatised and distressed he would become.

Dad was able to cheer Elliot up afterwards with a dash to the supermarket for a chocolate frog.

Reuniting with Elliot, Captain Pancutt and his fellow members gifted the three-year-old a plastic CFA helmet and some Freddo frogs, a very exciting treat.

Having had a tree fall on their house, damaging Elliot’s bedroom, last June during the storms, Heath said that experience has made him even more protective of his son.

“When you’ve had a tree literally fall on

“It’s always nice to be appreciated for what you do but we don’t sign up and do this for the accolades, it’s just something to give back to the community and be a part of the community.”

Knowing the initial panic that can set in as a parent, Heath said it can be challenging to know what to do but his advice for parents is to call for help.

“It is really hard when you’re a parent to take a minute to relax. You might have tried to pull the fingers out but leave it to the professionals, give them a call. Get the right people down there and take that help from people around as well.”

Green thumbs up for kids

By Tyler Wright Children in the Dandenong Ranges put their green thumbs into action during a planting day at Gembrook Park on Thursday 26 May. Gembrook Primary School students, from grade three through to grade six, were encouraged to get involved in revegetation and biodiversity enhancement of their local reserve as part of a partnership between Friends of Gembrook Park, Landcare Australia and the Cardinia Environment Coalition.

Nicci Starke, Landcare Facilitator, assisted the ‘eco-warriors’ in planting native shrubbery including raspberry, prickly currant, kangaroo apple and the tasman flax lily.

“We’ve already got the cover with the Blackwood, we’re [now] trying to bring up the undercovers…the more you’ve got these Indigenous species on the edge, the more they keep the weed species out,” Ms Starke said. Friends of Gembrook Park and Beaconhills College students laid out the foundation for the planting beds alongside the walking track in March, with plans to venture further into the reserve.

The passionate gardeners had to make sure they did not break the plant stems while using biodegradable weed bedding and mulch to keep the seedlings protected and thriving.

“The plants have fences and tree guards to protect [them] while they’re young so the animals don’t eat them - and then when the plants are tall enough and robust enough to withstand a bit of nibbling, the rangers will take down the fences and we’ll help them with that,” Friends of Gembrook Park volunteer Cheryl DeCoite said.

“Then those plants are available for the animals to eat and shelter in when they’re a bit bigger,” she added.

The group of students eagerly, yet gently, plotted their allocated plants alongside a partner - already experienced in acting sustainably during school hours.

“They make sure everything’s divided properly into the right rubbish bins; composting, recycling and rubbish…they also go around the school and educate other children,” Gembrook Primary Sustainability Coordinator Sharon Bennett said.

Volunteer grows with community garden

By Parker McKenzie During Melbourne’s lengthy lockdowns, Ferntree Gully local Aye Maung Asho felt more distant than ever from his homeland of Burma.

“I’ve been staying in this complex for five years now and moved to Australia 11 years ago,” he said.

“I love planting since when I was in Burma, when I reached here I still wanted to do planting, but I don’t know how and where.”

Mr Asho said during the Covid-19 outbreak in 2021, he had nothing to do and asked someone from the Community Housing precinct where he lives whether he could plant a garden.

“He said the garden belongs to everyone, so I can do that, then I started to farm last year,” he said.

“I watched and learn from the others since I was in Burma, I learned about farming from the people there.”

With the support of his family, Community Housing and other residents, Mr Asho has grown his garden and made it into a community project.

Community Housing national development officer Jamie Hutchinson said Mr Asho has taken a space being underutilised and created something people want to be a part of.

“He’s created an opportunity for people to come and see what he can do, and also encourages people to be part of that as well,” Mr Hutchinson said.

“We try and facilitate opportunities through community projects that we do in social housing to increase the health and well-being of people, but to also try and create more culturmailcommunity.com.au

Mr Asho lives in Ferntree Gully with his wife and daughter and said he grows various kinds of plants in the garden for other people’s pleasure and his own satisfaction.

“I don’t know Australia’s favourite fruit and vegetables, generally I only know about Asian plants,” he said “I grew grapes and for others, I also grow seasonal plants such as gram pea, peppers, calabash, pumpkin and many others.”

Mr Hutchinson said the Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to concentrate on supporting people to be part of the community.

“It’s extremely important for the people in that Ferntree Gully development to have these sorts of opportunities where they live, to kind of create those connections for each other.” he said.

“I think it’s really important for animals to keep living and us not be the only things on earth,” he said.

For grade five student Erin, it was “really fun” to go on the adventure to Gembrook Park.

“I like how all the animals know right when they come out of their nest, how to fly and use

Friends of Gembrook Park have planned another planting sessions with Gembrook Primary School next week - made possible by a $5,000 grant from the Australia Home Heating Association.

Special council charge

By Parker McKenzie Yarra Ranges Council has carried a motion to declare a special charge scheme at its next meeting to seal Kirkham Road in Belgrave South.

The motion was in response to a petition tabled by local residents in December 2018, which resulted in landowners along Kirkham Road between Retreat Road and Courtneys Road being surveyed.

After the survey found the landowners showed significant support for the scheme, the construction program was referred for inclusion in the council’s 10-year capital expenditure program after originally being excluded from the list of roads endorsed by the roads for the community funding program.

Deputy Mayor Johanna Skelton said she would like to put forward the motion as recommended.

“This is another that has come through a petition process rather than the Roads for Community,” she said.

“I’ve got the feeling these are the first in my time on council to come through in this manner, obviously that shows the community very much persisted in getting these up.”

In 2019, the Federal Government provided $150 million in funding for the sealing of roads in the Yarra Ranges. The council’s Roads for Community program prioritises using the funding for roads bordering schools, preschools, key community facilities, road networks in urban areas and service areas with high property density.

“Even when they have that agreement it still needs to go in our forward plan for expenditure, good on the residents for banding together and taking action on their road,” she said.

“If I was that resident I’d be saying it’s a pretty good bet, so I am thankful for the team for moving it forward through this process.”

Council will contribute 20 per cent of the cost to seal the 520m road. The charge is calculated at $8,884 per development unit, 3 per cent financing per annum and 100 per cent on a development unit basis, for a total of $137,903.

The motion unanimously passed and was carried by Yarra Ranges Council.

Grant helps furry friends

A Dandenong Ranges rabbit rescue has received a $1,000 grant from Australia Post to facilitate their foster program.

Rabbit Runaway Orphanage in Olinda, a non-for-profit run by volunteers and a small committee of management, facilitates medical treatments, short-term care and homing solutions for the neglected or stranded bunnies.

“Our rescue supports council pounds and other rescues with animals that are perhaps difficult for them to rehome because of underlying health issues,” orphanage president Judi Inglis said.

“When we [send] these bunnies out, we put out a pet set up with them; that’s an indoor pet fence with a picnic rug to go under it, a water bowl, a big bag of hay and pellets.”

Rather than adoption, where the new owner foots medical and maintenance bills, the rabbit orphanage covers veterinary expenses for foster carers.

“Rabbits are not a mainstream pet, when it comes to animal grants and laws… so we battle to keep funds coming in for vet care for the animals, particularly the ones in our special

needs foster program,” Ms Inglis said.

A bunny dumped in a St Kilda laneway was recently surrendered to the centre and another rabbit suffering from a tapeworm cyst was delivered from another regional animal rescue.

These are what Ms Inglis calls ‘Very Important Bunnies’ (BIBs) and the ones who are in the most need of foster care.

“We’re finding pet rabbits dumped…over the last few years we’ve picked up five or six from the Mountain Highway…these animals were long-furred breeds, and they don’t survive out there,” she said.

356 community groups were supported through Australia Post’s ‘People of Post’ grants which seek to reward non-profit community organisations.

“We are delighted that so many of our people around Australia were keen to make a difference and nominated an organisation close to their heart for a grant.”

It was Sunshine West local Christian Rangasamy who nominated Rabbit Runaway Orphanage for the grant.

Ms Inglis encourages those looking to own a rabbit to research the breed’s needs and warns they are not a “great child’s pet”.

Bouncing back from Covid

By Jamie Salter The Covid-19 pandemic took its toll on all local businesses from retail, hospitality, tourism operators, and professionals but business owners are bouncing back and are planning for the future.

The Eastern Dandenong Ranges Association (EDRA) is a volunteer run local business and tourism group representing Cockatoo, Emerald, Gembrook, Menzies Creek and Upper Beaconsfield among others.

EDRA recently held a Q and A Business Breakfast at the Puffing Billy Lakeside Visitor Centre in Emerald to help business owners address the growing popularity of local spending and tourism.

Guest speakers included Puffing Billy chief executive officer Peter Abott, Mainstreet Australia urban planner Stephen Sully, Industry Capability Network’s Andy Balmain and Cardinia Shire Council economy manager Andrew Pomeroy.

Attendees had the opportunity to network over a provided hot breakfast and put questions to the panellists.

With Casey and Cardinia shires about to see major growth over the next 20 years, residents will be looking to escape their homes and travel to popular destinations.

Mr Pomeroy said growth will occur around EDRA businesses, causing the popularity of retail and hospitality trade to boom.

“We’re looking at the size of three Ballarat’s joining us over the next 15 to 20 years living in homes with 420 square metre blocks and they’ll want to get out of their houses and do things,” Mr Pomeroy said.

“There’s a large amount of people that will look for somewhere to go and EDRA is 20 minutes away.”

Mr Balmain of Industry Capability Network explained how the agency works with the Victorian Government to engage local industry for construction and other projects and Mr Sully of Mainstreet Australia shared how the member based organisation advocates for the ongoing survival of main streets and town centres.

“Mainstreet works with state and local government to get those agencies to recognise the value of main streets and business associations as great partners to work with,” Mr Sully said.

“Our model is changing to encourage longer or overnight trips,” Mr Abott said.

“Our focus is not just to grow passenger numbers but to have a economically sustainable railway for our workforce.”

Life of a female creative

By Tyler Wright A community based film production showcasing the work of female creatives in the Dandenong Ranges launched at Burrinja Cultural Centre on Saturday.

‘Creative Ladies in the Hills and Valleys’ showcases the work of artists from Olinda, Sherbrooke, Upwey, Monbulk, Selby, Belgrave and Warburton.

Pearley Jones, Selby-based director, producer and composer, said the idea to document these women germinated from Melbourne’s lockdowns.

“Each participating artist has shared their story in the movie about their love of the arts, the local area and the importance of investing in self-care to live one’s best life,” Ms Jones said.

“I wanted to build up community connections [so] artists would form new connections with each other and with their communities.”

From the moment the former journalist applied for funding from Yarra Ranges Council, the creation of the documentary was a twoyear process.

“I met one [artist] at the markets, I found one through Open Studios…I did a bit of research, it was a fairly intuitive process,” Ms Jones said.

“I wanted a broad cross section of artists - women that were committed to the area, passionate about their craft - somehow they all had a positive outlook on life and innate generosity, which has added such tremendous value and warmth to the narrative in the documentary.”

Ms Jones collaborated with Melbournebased award winning videographer Vanessa White to curate a visual tapestry which highlights the essence of the local arts scene and colourful townships, something the director

For Olinda-based painter Emma Jennings, the day-long filming journey began at her home studio and trickled outside into a nearby patch of forest impacted by last year’s June storm.

“I’ve had a bit of practice because I’m in my gallery myself selling my work and talking about it directly with people - I did the Dandenong Ranges Open Studios for a few years where I was able to practice talking about my work; so that felt pretty comfortable. I suppose I’m not used to doing that with cameras pointed at me,” Ms Jennings said. “[The documentary] shows a really good cross section of my work, my ideas and mate-

rials with beautiful imagery,” she said.

“It’s really bold, brave and important. Our struggles are very similar. A lot of the women featured have children and that is a very real and important part of our lives which does present a unique set of challenges for us as professional artists, trying to build a career and a practice and a business around raising children. The industry is predominantly dominated historically by men. And so it’s taken a long time for women to break through that mold and find our way.”

Yarra Ranges Council, the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust and Regional Arts Victoria were key partners in the project.

nalised and Pearley Jones has received interest from Yarra Ranges Life TV, The Memo Healesville, Yarra Ranges Council, tourism groups and an Abbotsford creative community called ‘2 Mayfield Street.’

For the director, the courage of each artist was a stand out while creating the film.

“They all excelled on screen and in telling their story; each of them are very genuine stories, they’re very heartwarming. And give real insights into what it is like to be an artist in the modern world, who’s juggling family, children, relationships with other people, and somehow trying to carve out some time for their passion projects and for things that are important to them,” Ms Jones said.

Art series against ageism

By Tyler Wright Members of the Ringwood Art Society (RAS) soaked in the scenery at The Basin Centennial Garden yesterday during their Plein Air paint out session; nurturing both their art and souls.

13 artists, hailing from around the eastern suburbs including towns such as Ferny Creek and Olinda, used pastels, acrylics and watercolour to produce realistic and impressionist works.

“There’s a couple of us who are more experienced than others, and we try to help each other as part of the ethos of the group, which is a wonderful spirit to have in a Society like this where we’re all helping each other to improve” RAS Vice President Lyn Kosmer said.

The ‘Plein Air’ process, requiring the artist to step into the landscape and immerse themselves in nature, is a “go-to” for strengthening artistic skills, Lyn said.

“You have to actually paint reasonably quickly to get the atmosphere and the light because it changes; and sometimes at different times of the year it changes every five minutes.

So you’ve got to really work quickly and almost intuitively to get the feeling of the moment.”

“Instead of just walking past as part of a walking program or hiking - with plein air painting, you’re sitting in one spot and absorbing everything in that landscape and it’s heightened; having your antenna open to all the things that are around you.”

The Ringwood Art Society is also home to weekly portraiture sessions where participants draw inspiration from a live model and operates out of the Maroondah Federation Estate in Ringwood.

“They’ve got fabulous facilities there for the galleries and great spaces that we use for the

“We do get around, and the group is very popular because of its camaraderie, as well as the reliability of the organisation of it and the fact it’s good for your painting skills.”

For those wanting to get involved, information can be found on the group’s website and Lyn suggests attending one of the monthly meetings where members showcase their works and are judged by a well-known artist or demonstrator.

“It’s very instructive...and gives an insight into how everyone approaches their art differently, and how somebody who has made their living doing art actually approaches it is another dimension again,” she said.

Quarterly and annual exhibitions like this year’s habitat exhibition allow members to see others’ work and hone their own craft.

“It’s a way for anybody who is good at any particular segment of art; whether that be sketching, watercolor painting or pastels; there’s a niche group who does exactly that,” the Vice President said.

A new community art venture will kick off in Boronia in June in an effort to bring people of all ages together to combat ageism.

Eastern Community Legal Centre (ECLC) has partnered with The Basin Community House, EACH, Eastern Regional Libraries Boronia branch, Knox Council, Knox Leisureworks, Mullum Mullum Indigenous Gathering Place, Swinburne University and Women’s Health East to create ‘My Generation;’ a diverse, intergenerational public art project.

“ECLC are honoured to host My Generation and trust that this creative venture will foster better connections in the community, challenge ageism and bring different generations together in Boronia,” CEO Michael Smith said.

“We believe this intergenerational project is an excellent forum to foster diversity,

inclusivity and connectivity among community members,” he said.

Primary school children in year levels four, five and six from Boronia K-12 College will be connected with those aged over 60 years old, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents aged over 50 years of age, to create a collaborative series of artworks and documentary film.

Activity projects will take place within the Boronia Township with the venue still to be confirmed. My Generation is funded by the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions – Office for Suburban Development – Suburban Revitalisation Program and is supported by the Boronia Revitalisation Board and the Victorian Government.

Great ‘old school’ service My name is Josh Kinnes and I am a Belgrave local. My working background for the last 15 years has been in the field of youth work.

I opened the barbershop not only as a business to support the local community but to create a hub to engage with local people but go back to the ‘old school’ values of the traditional barbershop, by making people feel important and look good by getting a great haircut and good conversation.

I am currently 1 month away from completing my barbers course and have been offering $10 hair cuts as a means to get people in and practice what I have been learning at school.

I wrote this caption for a T-shirt we created after we got out of lockdown at the end of 2021 - ‘risk it for the biscuit’. For years I’ve been driving through the Main Street, I would see this shop and say to my wife, ‘babe, that would be such a cool spot for a barbershop. I love the doors, the windows...’

Fast forward to 2020, in the middle of a pandemic we decided to embark on our first business, purchasing Ray Steels Leather Goods, a fun little business that was started by my friend and mentor Matt and his wife Lani.

We knew that these products, the leather aprons, bags and wallets would need a home of their own and not just online.

With a cancelled trip to Bali and the desire to pursue a new passion, we decided to make the fantasy of the barbershop a reality.

With zero business experience, no barber experience and actually no barbers lined up to work for us, we signed a lease and started fitting out a barbershop.

Musical talents enjoyed

By Tyler Wright Families in the Dandenong Ranges gathered this month to celebrate the musical ability of the township at the Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) in Upwey.

The Ranges Young Strings, directed by Rosie Burns, were joined by students of local music teachers Claire Ransome and Sarah Strachan to bring the community together.

This comes as the DRMC begins to utilise and share their new facilities with the public.

“This is the first time I’ve had a live concert in a proper music facility, not outside or online, for the first time in about two years since Covid began; so it was a lovely concert,” Healesvillebased violin teacher Claire Ransome said.

A total of 25 performers ranged from the

ages of six through to older adults took to the stage on 14 May; breaking down the barriers of age to celebrate music.

“It’s something they can do which gives allows them to develop confidence and skills and develop sensitivity as people and be able to express themselves and to share that music with others - not just in performing, but also in playing together with other people - that is such a wonderful tool for building community, building harmony between people and also connecting with people who you might not see in your friendships circle or in your immediate family and friends,” Claire said.

“That’s a really important part of being a part of a community, feeling like you have something you can offer and share with others,” she said.

The Dandenong Ranges Music Council holds various community programs and is home to set ensembles, singing groups, orchestras and bands. The Star Mail recently spoke to members for National Volunteer Week which ended on 22 May. “We’re now in the process of trying to wind up a lot of those projects and start up again with the orchestra and start up rehearsals and concerts with the various groups and ensembles...they all run on volunteers, so we’re always looking for people to help,” volunteer coordinator and Dandenong Ranges local Johanna Selleck said.

Safe exercise for Osteoarthritis pain Osteoarthritis is a major cause of chronic pain, disability and activity limitation in modern Australia. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, around one in 11 Australians have osteoarthritis and the wait lists for joint replacement surgery are only getting longer. As a physiotherapist, I treat people with osteoarthritis every day and I understand very well the challenges it presents.

So, what actually is osteoarthritis? Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, and it is characterised by the wearing away of cartilage in a joint – most commonly the hips, knees, spine and hands. This changes a joint’s congruency (shape) and can lead to pain, inflammation/swelling and loss of movement.

Unfortunately, there are many misconceptions about osteoarthritis. Whilst it is caused by many unavoidable factors such as age, genetics and old injuries, the most common causes of osteoarthritis are actually being overweight and having a sedentary lifestyle.

Well played production at 1812 Theatre The 1812 Theatre’s May production was the American comedy Till Beth Do Us Part.

A comedy touching on fast and enjoyed by the opening night audience. The stage was set as the living room of the home of Susannah and Gibby Hayden. Susannah runs her business from home while Gibby is the local TV weatherman.

Of course Gibby doesn’t do much around the house always putting things off so Susannah employs a woman to help run the house and who finally takes over the business.

Kate Macfie was Susannah. A good portrayal of a businesswoman getting more and more frustrated.

Kemp’s curtain call Rowan Francis was Gibby, a I’ll do it later husband. Well played with Francis catching the finer nuances of such a character. Their friends, Margo and Hank were both well played by Megan Coe and Edward Kennett.

Coe caught the character with finesse giving a good performance. Kennett, a tall man which helped in the humour of the evening, gave a sterling portrayal and costume wise added to the enjoyment of the evening.

Beth, the hired lady, was given a wonderful interpretation by Helen Ellis. She captured the accent as required, a very busy lady, projects well and was a bonus to the production.

As Susannah’s boss, Celia Carmichael played by Leeann Cairnduff although a small role toward the end of the play, gave a great feel of the character and a scene with Kennett nearly raised the roof. A different ending to what one would expect but you have to see it to enjoy the whole production.

Family history a good read PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN A review of Good Luck, Dear Girl: A turn of the century romance by Truda Olson Truda Olson’s Good Luck, Dear Girl: A turn of the century romance is the result of a meticulously researched family history project. It is a valuable text on the history of migration to Australia and New Zealand.

The book tells the life story of Duncan, the author’s grandfather. In 1884, at the age of 18, he was sent by relatives from England to work on a sheep farm in New Zealand. Duncan later purchased his own farm and was very active in Pahiatua, a small rural town in southwestern North Island. His opinion pieces and involvement in community affairs often appeared in local and regional publications. This provided ample material for the author to piece together Duncan’s activities and aspirations.

But the book features much more than one man’s life. For example, there is a brief history of migration from England to New Zealand, including a comparison of the sea voyage by sailing ship and steamship.

Interestingly, in contrast to Australia being initially envisaged by the British Government as a penal colony, New Zealand was promoted as a desirable destination from the start. The author quotes John Murray Moore’s 1890 book New Zealand for the Emigrant, Invalid and Tourist: “A young, healthy, single man, of good morals and principles, energetic and ready to ‘rough it’ with a handicraft of some kind at which he is expert, is the type of emigrant that will succeed in New Zealand. If he leaves old England with hope in his bosom, faith in his heart, and love to his fellow-man beaming from his eyes, always ready to do a good turn, handy and hard-working, and skilled in his own particular trade, he will not fail of getting remunerative employment.”

The author further supplies a vivid sketch of the lived experiences of middle-class migrants in New Zealand in the late 19th century. These include but are not limited to their performing arts, sports, recreational activities, and the so-called “acclimatisation societies” that worked hard to introduce numerous species from England to the colony.

Then, in 1902, Duncan married Gertrude, the author’s grandmother, whose family migrated from Wales to New Zealand in 1876. Gertrude was an accomplished writer, musician, actress and singer. At the age of 20, she met Henry Lawson when the famous Australian writer briefly visited New Zealand in 1894.

A long, beautiful poem written by Gertrude in 1897 is included in the book.

In the author’s words: “Well, if that’s not a poignant cry from a wounded heart, I don’t know what is.” Finally, the author traces Duncan and Gertrude’s life in Australia after the couple relocated to Tasmania in 1907 and then to Victoria in 1911. Their hobbies, activities and social engagements in Somerville and Bendigo shed much light on Australian attitudes towards foreign decoration and design in the early 20th century.

In short, Good Luck, Dear Girl is an example of diligent and disciplined family history research. The writing is engaging and informative, the presentation exquisite and highly enjoyable. Job well done.

By Parker McKenzie Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club has achieved an unbelievable twelve-game undefeated streak to finish the season with a Division One premiership, one of the highest achievements in Victorian Baseball.

Vice President Chris Lind said it has been 20 years since the club last won the premiership.

“10 years ago, a few of us players took over the running of the club and it’s been a 10-year work in progress,” he said.

“Finally, against pretty much all the odds, we’ve taken out the division one premiership this year.”

The club won the Division One Baseball Victoria summer season after winning their first playoff series 2-0 against Waverly Baseball Club, followed by a grand final victory against Essendon Baseball Club with the same result on Sunday 22 May. Player-Coach Donovon Hendricks said the season was hugely successful despite a slow start.

“We started off with a little bit of a scratchy start; we would win one, lose one, win one then lose one again,” he said.

“We probably started the preseason with some real hopes of being a finalist after losing

the semi-final last year. We started the preseason a little bit earlier, started with really ambitious goals to get back to the finals.”

Hendricks, who has previously played the MLB team Atlanta Braves, said the team came back from the Christmas mid-season break motivated by the fact they would need to win every game to keep their finals hopes alive.

“If we dropped any more games we were likely going to be mathematically out of contention,” he said.

“We went on a 12 game win streak on that point onwards. I’ve been in baseball for a long time and in this league for 21 years as a player.

I’ve never seen anything like it.

“To be the coach and witness it as well was something really special.”

Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club was founded in 1963 and is based out of Kings Park, Upper Ferntree Gully. Hendricks said the club is hoping to do one better next year and win the Victorian Club Championships.

“It’s a point system for essentially the strongest club in Victoria. We finished second behind Essendon Baseball Club this season,” he said.

“It takes into account all of your Senior Planning Group, how many wins they get through-

out the year and the most wins across the league win the championships. We’re aspiring for that kind of success across our club.”

The club has bounced back from a few difficult years after being relegated, making the premiership victory a special moment for the club.

Hendricks said Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club is in a strong position, though he isn’t sure if it proves baseball is growing in Victoria or if the club’s recent success has had an influence.

“We went from four teams last year to six this year. We’ve grown in our junior department as well, so in our area it is quite strong,” he said.

“I suppose that is an indication when we go to the success of clubs. If your club is in a really good position and a strong position with good coaching and a good environment, then you’ll see the growth.

“Overall I would say Baseball is in a good position, it is making strides to be in a better position. There’s no doubt it’s probably not where it was in years past.”

Upwey Ferntree Gully runs programs and competes in competitions from junior baseball and T-ball to senior men’s and women’s competitions and masters baseball.

Monbulk tame the Tigers after big win

By Armin Richter Monbulk and Upwey-Tecoma met at Upwey’s ‘Dome’, with both sides needing a win to stay in touch with the top five. The Monbulk Senior footballers had not won at Upwey since 2015, and wins at that venue have been few and far between over the years. In the previous 50 clashes between these teams at Upwey, since the formation of the YVMDFL in 1966, the Tigers had emerged victorious on 37 occasions to the Hawks’ 13 wins.

In cool and overcast conditions Upwey started better and had two goals on the board in quick time before Monbulk steadied to slot through the next six majors. The Hawks then maintained a three to four goal lead for most of the second half until a couple of late goals set them up to record a convincing 35 point win. The win puts Monbulk back in equal fifth on the ladder as they maintain their perfect record on their road trips so far this season.

The highlight of this match was father-son combination Steven and Tyren Utting playing their first game together in the same team after Steven (a 1997 and 2006 Senior premiership player) came out of retirement and played his first match since 2014.

Upwey-Tecoma 20.24.144 def Monbulk 0.0.0 Best: Shania Turner, Indy Bakker, Shaye McLean, Molly Horne, Maddy Dodd, Rachael Foley The A Grade netball meeting between Monbulk and Upwey was a fast paced and energetic game where the Hawks triumphed by 10 goals.

The victory was set up after a dominant first quarter where the Hawks managed to pile on 16 goals to eight. The win meant that for the first time in the clubs’ history, both the Monbulk Senior footballers and the A Grade netballers won on the same day at Upwey (in 2015 the seniors won while A Grade received a bye as Upwey didn’t field a team).

In the end Monbulk fell four points shy of victory with their three losses this season having been against the top three sides, and all were agonisingly by less than a goal.

Football Emerald took on Yarra Glen away in great football conditions.

Whilst Yarra Glen started well in general play they were unable to connect when going forward. At each turnover, Emerald used precise field kicking to set up a 3.6 to 1.0 lead at quarter time, with a number of rushed behinds as Yarra Glen defenders put the Emerald forwards under intense pressure.

In the second quarter, the River Pigs continued with the pressure and improved their field kicking and piled on 5 goals to the Bomber’s solitary goal to go into halftime with a 2 point lead.

Emerald was stung into action, lifting their intensity and continuing with their clean ball handling and precise kicking.

They outscored Yarra Glen 5 goals to 2 to take a 14 point lead into the last quarter.

Yarra Glen battled hard in the early part of the quarter to keep in touch but eventually ran out of steam as Emerald kicked late goals to win 14.12 to Yarra Glen’s 9.7.

Best for Emerald were Mitchell Thomas, Ty Ellison, Brendan Wilson, Patrick Chin, Dale Karacsonyi and Jake Pedder.

Emerald was only a point up in the Reserves at quarter time. In a tough second quarter, both teams added 2 goals, with Emerald 6 points up at the main break.

Yarra Glen seemed to stop in the third, having appeared to have thrown everything at it in the first half. Emerald were playing much better football to add 3.4 while Yarra Glen didn’t add to their score.

Yarra Glen fought back to outscore Emerald with 3 goals to 1 in the last quarter but Emerald held on, the final score 7.1, 43 to 8.13, 61.

Best for Yarra Glen were Brendan Davis, Jacob Reddaway, Craig Dodsworth, Anthony Harman, Zac and Nate Capuano. Goalkickers were Stirling TwiteMoore (2), Drew Brodie (2), Nate Capuano, Max Forbes and Brendan Davis.

Netball An aggressive and intense Emerald jumped Yarra Glen to up by 11 at quarter time before the Yarra Glen girls gradually got back into the game.Emerald’s great goalshooter, Kaylah Loulanting (35 goals) started to be restricted by Yarra Glen’s Peta Fay as Yarra Glen started to control more of the game. The poor start from Yarra Glen was a bit too much as Emerald held on by just 3 goals, to win 41-44.

In B Grade it was a battle for 4th spot, with Emerald losing out in a devastating 1 goal loss. Up by 3 goals at halftime, Yarra Glen kept the pressure on to overhaul Emerald to be in front at the final siren.

C Gradebrought back an Emerald team stronger and more aggressive than their opponent, despite a nasty head injury to Yarra Glen’s Jacinda Fraser causing a major time delay. It was distressing for the Yarra Glen girls, with Emerald ending up on top 37- 56.

D Grade was a hard-fought game with Emerald just 2 goals up at three-quarter time before proving too strong in the last winning 27-35.

Tough outing for Olinda

By Frank Seal A highly anticipated weekend at Olinda saw the Bloods host top-of-the-ladder Narre Warren, and the women face their biggest challenge yet against Healesville. A win against Narre Warren would have seen the Bloods well established in the top four at four to two. What better reason to start strongly and put it to the Magpies.

Both teams started well. Narre nailed the first goal, but Olinda’s pressure was a match for the Magpies. Coach Brendan Donovan predicted a handful of goals from within 15 metres, and as if on cue Lachy Taylor and Mat Rosier reeled off three majors from snaps out of the ruck and the ball spilling from packs. A contested mark and conversion to Taylor saw Olinda two points behind an accurate Narre Warren (30-28) at the quarter time break. The second quarter saw closer, contested footy with both teams applying intense pressure.

For Olinda, major scores were added by Currie, Keegan, and Millwood but the Magpies were simply more accurate in front of goal. At the main break both teams had 16 scoring shots,

yet Narre had extended their lead to 20 points.

Coach Donovan applauded the effort from his team, and the message was - if the margin is within three goals at the final break - be prepared for anything. Unfortunately for Olinda, the Magpies displayed their class in the second half, overwhelming the Bloods at times with silky ball use and strong hands in the air.

Ruckmen Sean Atkinson and Josh Wallis were bringing the energy out of the middle, marking strongly, and gaining territory off the boot. Tyler Belloni showed strong intent all day, willing himself to numerous contests and clearing the ball under pressure. However, by three quarter time Narre were out to a 39-point lead.

In the final quarter the Magpies continued to apply pressure and move the ball into their forward line, keeping the Olinda defenders busy. A late goal to young debutant Isaac Tonkin was some consolation which saw every Olinda jumper get around the first gamer. But this second half display of class from the Magpies saw the margin extend further. The final score (Narre Warren 21-15-141 d Olinda 1017-77) reflected the Magpie dominance after a spirited first half from the Bloods.

Olinda’s strong season stopped by Healesville

By Simon Gilson and Frank Seal Olinda’s strong start to the season was brought to a halt on Saturday as Healesville lives up to their reputation as a competition favourite.

While Olinda still had a few injuries to the list, the coaches felt it was a strong team to meet a close to full strength Healesville unit and were looking forward to the hitout.

The last few weeks have seen wins against tough opposition but the club did not believe it been playing its best footy. Against Healesville, the Olinda-Ferny Creek Football Club came out a little flat. You could see the lost momentum in the energy of the girls at the break despite this not yet showing on the scoreboard.

The second quarter saw Olinda continue to battle hard at the contest, but some clean ball use and uncontested possession allowed Healesville to score. Players looked a little rattled, not used to a team being able to convert turnovers like Healesville did and the ball use was often rushed. In attack, Healesville were able to create space and give their forwards plenty of options.

When Olinda won back the footy, they regularly kicked into their waiting defensive wall, a pattern Healesville capitalised on.

This is the brand of footy Olinda trains to play themselves, however the pace Healesville set for the game caught the team behind the contest and out of position. When panicked, Olinda used low percentage footy which inevitably led to turnovers and gave 34 MAIL

Healesville more opportunities to score.

The game continued into the second half in much the same way - there were plenty of individual highlights from players such as Grace Belloni and Maddie Collins, however, without the team cohesion and team defence out of the midfield we’ve shown all year, their efforts could not cause damage on the scoreboard. Casey Seymour and Leah Cody had plenty to do in defence and battled hard all night, but the game was fought and lost in the midfield. Isla Bradbury ran the wings and presented options.

Phoebe Dixon presented well up forward but the delivery was not as sharp as it has been, whilst Ness Bateman pushed up the ground and provided options. Ruby Gilson continued her good form with creative running and working to get to the contest. Alex Gunn again provided her stopping power against one of the Healesville forwards in one of the few defensive wins of the night.

Healesville were playing inspired football, putting heavy pressure on the Olinda defenders led gallantly by Casey Seymour and Leah Cody. At the final siren, Healesville had pulled off the upset of the women’s season so far, inflicting Olinda’s first loss for the year (13-7-85 to 1-2-8).

The players are confident they can turn around that performance. With more discipline and a more defensive mindset and structure, Olinda feels they will give Healesville a much tougher game when the two meet again in three weeks.

The U17 boys headed down the road to Woori to play the unbeaten ladder leaders for the second time this year. Last time they played, the team had just added around 7 players from Monbulk and the players were starting to get to know each other. Eight weeks into the season the boys have been playing better footy and had racked up recent wins. The players were looking forward to seeing where they were now at.

Woori jumped Olinda in the opening stanza, breaking out to an eight goal lead at quarter time and Coach Paddy was worried the team were facing more of the same as last time we played. The group rallied though in the second quarter and started to meet the contest. In a fast moving and entertaining game, the boys evened up the contest and looked the better team around the ground. Whilst the scoreboard didn’t look pretty after the first quarter, at half time the damage had been contained.

The boys continued to challenge Woori for the rest of the game and only errant kicking prevented them from putting more pressure on the top of the table Woori outfit. The coaching team were pretty happy with the effort and felt that the improvement in the team so far is paying off as they play more footy together. Paddy was happy that for two and a half quarters the U17s could mix it with the best of them and noted Luca Smith’s role in the ruck and Jacob Bateson’s run with role as being highlights.

The U16 girls headed back out to Healesville in what they knew would be a tough encounter. Down several players, the girls were jumped early with Healesville pouring on five goals in the opening term. At quarter time, coaches Claire and Gramercy looked to see the players contest the ball, run and support and continue to will themselves into each contest.

The girls responded and shut down Healesville’s avenues to goal. Celia Clarke, Kaesha Christie and Elsa Leonard provided hard running through he middle and Tobi Monkhurst and Tilly Oleskowski repelled forward entry after forward entry. Jacquie Ring and Eloise Tyler rucked gallantly all day while Claudia Pitts provided good options across the wing and half forward until suffering a nasty finger injury. Whilst they couldn’t control the scoreboard, they certainly provided a tougher contest than last time they played and proved to themselves that even without several of their best layers, they can take the game to the best in the competition.

The U15 boys had the unusual slot of playing after the U17s and enjoyed the attention as they gave their first effort in Yarra division.

They demonstrated that they deserved to playing amongst the top teams in the league as they jumped Upwey-Tecoma early and established a five goal lead by half time. Charlie Hooper changed up his role this week playing off the half back and intercepted plenty of Upwey forward entries with strength and skill. Aidan Bates dominated around the ground and still managed to kick four goals. Case Hine’s height and skill proved too much around the ground, Lenny Barry provided dash and carry, Jarvis

Rio Neish’s dash across half forward saw him score and Will Blenkiron goal from forward pocket proved that four goals in the U13s just was not enough. It was a fast paced, high quality game and the coaches were happy that they could start life in the top division with a win and Coach Scott was happy that the win came from a really strong defensive effort.

The U13 boys showed that they are now fighting in the correct division, playing against the Woori Black team. They got an early lead and refused to let it up for the game. James Thornton wasn’t going to let Will Bleniron have all the scoring opportunities, along with Spencer Garrett, Fergus Hourigan and Fletch Brown. Jess Desta provided his usual run and aerial skills, also kicking a goal.

The U12 girls continued their development as they returned to Belgrave to test their wares.

Coach Ruby was really happy that the girls were working on improving their skills and asked the girls before the game to use space to move the ball and to best first at the contest.

Whilst the scoreline didn’t look great, the team significantly narrowed the gap from last time they played, showing progress for a very young team in the division. Great effort. Ruby was really impressed with the games of Lulu Rayner, Reagan Seamer, Jess Verheyen, mighty little Tahlia Dawson and Lucy’s efforts in the ruck and Claire Mc Peake’s mark and goal will be the highlight reels for a long time.

The U11s really impressed their coach Stuart in a come from behind win over Woori.

Woori came at them hard in the opening half and they had to really look at how they would structure up defensively to counter act. Missing a few midfielders, the magnets were in high rotation to find the balance that would get them back in the game. The team responded, edging their way in front by three quarter time and finishing with a strong 21 point margin.

Jack Ford, Will Francis, Syd Higgins and Connor Lourey kept the scorers busy and Stuart also commended Archie green on his game.

The U9s and U10s continued on their footy journeys with great hitouts. They’re definitely not holding back just because no one is keeping score. They are loving the game, their mates, the competition and are pretty happy with a bucket of hot chips as a reward after the game. mailcommunity.com.au
