New play space to enjoy Last week the students at St Clare’s were very excited to participate in their Annual Fun Run using the new extension to the playground for the very first time.

The students have been patiently watching the progress of the architecturally designed playground for over a year. The new area includes a ropes course, soccer and football field, shade and cover seating areas, passive play spaces and plenty of new grass where students can run.

This area provides a great facility for Physical Education lessons and opportunities for shared learning experiences in a beautiful outdoor environment. Further developments include an Indigenous Garden and outdoor classroom. This is due for completion in the next few months.

St Clare’s students are particularly enjoying exploring the ‘Ninja’ playground and surrounding play areas.

Children who play chess might be better versed to take risks than their peers, as well as aiding their arithmetic and rational thinking.

Researchers from Monash University and Deakin University conducted an experiment to examine the effects of intensive chess lessons with more than 400 Year 5 students who had no previous exposure to the game.

Students participated in a 30-hour chess program, endorsed by the World Chess Federation, across a three-week period.

They were assessed on their cognitive and non-cognitive behavioural changes, including risk, time management and ability to focus, for nearly a year after the training had ended.

What it showed was fascinating.

Playing chess from a young age could decrease risk aversion by exposing kids to win/loss scenarios and competition, as well as teaching children about strategic risktaking.

In a survey conducted with students 10 months after the chess program, 99 per cent said they wanted more chess lessons, 94.5 per cent had played chess with a classmate in the previous week, and 87.5 per cent said they played chess regularly with friends or family.

The study was led by Professor Asad Islam (Director, Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability, Monash Business School), and supported by Dr Wang Sheng Lee (Fellow, Centre for Development Economics and Sustainability, Monash Business School) and Dr Aaron Nicholas (Senior Lecturer in the Department of Economics, Deakin Business School).

Professor Asad Islam said it could help model good risk taking behaviour.

“Risk and reward is a concept that is ar-

ticulated well in the game of chess. Players often sacrifice pawns, knights and bishops if it helps checkmate the opponent’s king and win the game. Such sacrifices are inherently risky because if one’s calculations are faulty, the sacrifice could prove to be fatal, eventually leading to a quick loss,” Professor Islam said.

“Children need to know how to take calculated risks. If children are too risk averse it might prevent them from swimming at the beach, going to a public park or participating in contact sports for risk of injury.

“Later in life, this could also extend to adolescent behaviours such as drugs, smoking, truancy, involvement in crime and in romantic relationships.

“In many life situations, it is also the case that with great risk often comes great reward. However, the line between necessary calculated risk-taking and reckless behaviour is sometimes difficult to determine.

Learning chess can help bridge that gap.”

The researchers believe it could show the potential benefits of schools across Australia integrating the teaching of chess in the classroom to help young people deal with risk and reward later in life.

2. Make your own snacks - despite what they say, many kids have plenty of time on their hands. Teach them to make their own muesli bars and other snacks. Be patient, it’s a great life skill. They will learn to be more independent and have fun doing it!

3. Get more value - use the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website to get great recipes to use last night’s leftovers in exciting ways for school (and work) lunches.

4. Use what you’ve got - save money by digging out pens, pencils and other consumables from drawers, cupboards and bags, rather than buying new ones. Many stationery makers also have a range of notebooks made from recycled paper.

5. Textbooks and uniforms - most schools have secondhand book and uniform shops, but your local op shop is also worth trying. Many high school English and literature books are available for free on Kindle. For other subjects, ask teachers what the difference is with this year’s version of a textbook compared with last year’s, as the older edition may still be suitable.

An emphasis on respect in schools A concerning rise in incidents of aggression towards school staff from parents and carers has sparked policies and resources to promote respectful behaviours in schools.

The state’s new ’Respectful Behaviours within the School Community Policy’ sets out guidelines on the expected standards of behaviour for parents, carers and other adults in the school community.

The policy aims to reduce the risk and incidence of work-related violence towards school staff, ensuring all education workers feel safe and supported at work.

It includes strategies and resources to help schools prevent and manage unacceptable behaviours from parents and carers.

Posters and communication materials are being provided to schools to communicate the new policy – and the expectations around adult behaviours.

Education Minister James Merlino said school leaders and staff had been incredible throughout the pandemic and deserved to be treated with respect.

“This important work is about keeping schools safe and supporting staff to make

sure schools are places where everyone feels safe and respected – creating an environment where students can thrive,“ he said.

The policy and resources are linked to the state government’s recently passed Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) legislation, which strengthens protections for school staff against parent and carer aggression.

A School Community Safety Order scheme will be introduced to all schools in mid-2022, allowing school principals to issue safety orders in response to harmful, threatening, abusive or disruptive behaviour at work.

These new laws will also allow schools to prohibit parents and carers from engaging in threatening or abusive communication through social media and other channels.

Wig wonders A shock diagnosis almost 10 years ago left Officer’s Gillian Gilbert reeling. Doctors had found two cancerous tumours in her breasts and told her at best she’d have five years left.

Surviving the horrors of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, Gillian has come out the other side inspired to help other women experiencing the same thing.

Gillian is the proud owner of Wig Sisters based in Officer. She sees it as a way to empower women with cancer through functional, practical and affordable wigs and hair care.

In response, Mr Feeney told Star News the school was unable to source the appropriate academic relief support to continue on-site classes.

“Teachers at each campus are fully allocated to duties at that campus and therefore cannot move campuses without needing to be replaced themselves,” he said.

“The shortage of casual teachers within the region, and more widely across Victoria, has made it significantly difficult for the campus to operate to a standard that is beneficial for our students.”

He said the statewide teacher shortage makes it “very challenging” to operate a school considering the added pressures of a pandemic and flu season.

St Francis Xavier College in Berwick was eerily quiet on Friday 20 May after staff shortages forced the entire campus to return to online learning for a short period.

The school’s principal, Vincent Feeney confirmed to Star News that the Berwick campus will switch to remote learning as of Friday, with on-site classes recommencing on Wednesday 25 May. He said staff and students across the three campuses had been impacted by “illness”, however the Berwick campus had been particularly impacted. The College’s other two campuses, in Beaconsfield and Officer will continue on-site learning throughout the period.

“The College has a very successful remote learning model developed over the past two

years during the pandemic,” Mr Feeney said.

“However, our College views remote learning as a last resort response and has established a process for all students and families, particularly those who require support and student welfare.

“Any return to online learning will be for the briefest period possible.”

Parents of the school voiced their frustration at the decision, noting they were concerned about the potential repercussions a return to remote learning might have on their child’s mental well being.

“Have you not considered the untold damage to our children’s mental health during Covid in the last 2 years?,” one parent said in an email to the school obtained by Star News.

It comes as several schools across the state deal with similar staff shortages as the state experiences a spike in Covid and influenza cases.

Victoria has recorded over 10,000 new Covid cases each day for the last 10 days, with 12,556 cases recorded today.

Meanwhile, the state has recorded more influenza cases so far this year than the last two years combined, causing experts to call for a return to mandatory masks indoors.

Speaking to the ABC earlier in the week, Education Minister James Merlino ruled out a widespread return to remote learning.

“Yes, there are staffing challenges, of course there are,” he told ABC reporters.

“We’ve committed to opening schools and keeping them open and that’s exactly what we’ve delivered as that is of highest benefit to our kids.”

The Volunteer Reception Dinner was held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham on Thursday 19 May. About 180 people attended the sit-down dinner in a celebration of community spirit.

The award honours the late Stan Henwood and his lifetime contribution to Tynong and the municipality.

Stan’s wife Bev Henwood and daughter Denise Davidson attended the event and helped Cardinia Shire Council mayor Jeff Springfield present the award.

“Dad always said ’You do not do community work for an award, you do it for the community,“ Mrs Davidson said.

Cr Springfield said all the nominees make an invaluable contribution to the community.

“Volunteering brings people together, creates a better society for everyone and build stronger communities and I’m really proud to say Cardinia Shire has a really strong community thanks to our many volunteers,“ he said.

“We’ve seen so many tough times this past year or two for Caridnia Shire residents, and if it wasn’t for the selfless dedication of volunteers, we would have truly struggled much more than we have.“ Councillors Greame Moore, Kaye Cameron, Jack Kowarzik and chief executive officer Carol Jeffs all attended the special event.

Mr Ahern has been actively volunteering through Cardinia Tennis Club, Pakenham Young Liberals, Pakenham Squash Club, Pakenham Hall and Recreation Reserve, Rotary Club of Pakenham, Pakenham Junior Football Club, Beaconhills College, PB. Ronald Trust, Pakenham Lions Social Club, Pakenham Angling Club, Pakenham Cardinia Bushfire Relief Rebuilding, Consolidated School Council, Pakenham Bush Nursing Hospital, Officer Scouts Group and Pakenham East Probus Club.

Tim is highly regarded by his peers and has also been awarded the Rotary Club of Pakenham Paul Harris Medal in 2011 and the Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire Pin in 2018 for ongoing service to Rotary and the community.

His volunteering journey started at age 17 at the Cardinia Tennis Club annual meeting.

He said he was “extremely honoured to be chosen“ as the award recipient.

“Volunteering is something that you get an enormous pleasure out of, but have a look at the room tonight, where’s the younger generation?“ he said.

“With successful volunteering, you’re only part of a team of people who all work together to make our shire a better place.

“Sadly, red tape is getting in our way a bit.“ He said he was proud of the award, to be a member of Cardinia Shire, and most importantly, the people he has worked with over the years.

Wood nails another term

By Eleanor Wilson, Jamie Salter and Shelby Brooks Liberal MP Jason Wood has been re-elected as the local member for La Trobe in the 21 May Federal election.

Mr Wood said he was “humbled“ to retain his seat for a fourth consecutive term, reclaiming the La Trobe electorate with a 3.5 per cent swing on a two party preferred basis.

The MP said his motto of “promises made, promises delivered“ was key in maintaining the support of locals.

“If a constituent has an issue, I try to resolve it as quickly as possible and you can see that with the Monash Freeway Upgrade and Beaconsfield Interchange with are both nearing completion, as well as Raceourse Road and McGregor Road upgrades,“ he said.

Mr Wood conceded it was “disappointing“ he would not be able to use re-elected Liberal Government funds to establish a $12.5 million Multicultural and Community Hub in Pakenham, but said he hopes to work with the Labor Government to encourage the project.

“I won’t give up on it, my aim is to make sure those promises are delivered,“ he said.

“We also have a state election coming up later this year so I’ll work with state members on that issue also.“ Monash University School of Social Sciences politics lecturer Dr Zareh Ghazarian said Mr Wood’s re-election was one of the bright spots for the Liberal party at this election.

“There has been a small swing against him as folks go to minor parties, particularly the United Australia Party, the Liberal Democrats and One Nation,” Dr Ghazarian said.

“His primary vote is down by half a per cent and he’s getting the preference from the other minor parties.

“It’s an interesting result which demonstrates that swings are never uniform in na-

tional elections and that local politics matters.“ He said it was fascinating to see a pocket of support for the Coalition in La Trobe.

Labor candidate Abi Kumar acknowledged Jason Wood for his re-election.

“Both Jason and I ran strong campaigns, and the voters of La Trobe have made their voices heard. I wish him all the very best,“ he said.

Greens candidate Michael Schilling said he was happy with his election results, receiving 6708 first preference votes.

“The Greens received a positive swing across La Trobe, which was pleasing,“ he told the Gazette.

“Overall, the community responded quite positively to our campaign, with action on climate change, housing affordability, and dental into medicare becoming critical local topics.

“I want to congratulate Jason on retaining the seat and wish him all the best for the next term of parliament.

Plan to act on violence

By Jamie Salter Out of hours services, compliance training for sporting clubs and community outreach are three key priorities to be addressed in a push to prevent family violence over next 12 months and well into the future.

Reducing family violence has been identified as a council commitment as part of Cardinia Shire’s Livability Plan 2017–29.

The final session of the Together We Can summit was led by Pieta Bucello and had representatives from community services decide which issues should be prioritised in council’s new Family Violence Action Plan.

“To do this work it takes a collective approach, we need everyone to work together to address these challenges,” Ms Bucello said.

Together We Can collective impact facilitator Fiona Cost said council’s family violence roundtable will come together to confirm how to implement the key priorities identified by the community.

“The challenge for our service providers was to think outside the square on how we can improve what we offer in Cardinia Shire, so there’s some great outcomes that will feed into Cardinia Shire’s Livability Plan,” Ms Cost said.

One of the top priorities identified during the summit was to provide more services outside of regular business hours, meaning family violence victims will be able to reach out for help whenever it is needed most.

“Often things are nine to five and that doesn’t always work but fortunately we do know that the 131444 police without sirens line is 24 hours so worst case scenario people have that and SafeSteps is a 24 hour service,” Ms Cost said.

Supporting the roles of coaches at local sporting clubs was another top priority, giving them the training they need to call out bad behaviour.

Dad’s, mums, and children often all spend time at a local club as a family and coaches will be able to learn how to step in appropriately.

Ms Cost said the summit was a catalyst for the following year of action.

“This is a marathon, a long-term change process and the main thing is that people who are experiencing family violence get the help to recover and that people who are creating family violence get the help to stop and to keep families safe - particularly children -that is why we come together,” Ms Cost said.

“There’s a lot of things that need planning still but we will certainly be implementing them in our action plan.”

This week the Pakenham-Berwick Gazette kicks off an eight-month campaign - called The Road To Respect - aimed at shining a spotlight on family violence through the pages of the newspaper and online and social media channels.

Partly funded by a Facebook grant through Walkley Foundation, journalists will be specifically tasked to source and write content aimed at informing and challenging the community.

The Gazette - a sister paper to the Pakenham-Officer Star News - will publish eight page liftout features between May and February next year, starting with a special edition this week focusing on the Together We Can leadership summit.

Summit vision for change

By Danielle Galvin The month of May marks Australia’s Domestic and Family Violence Awareness Month.

Cardinia Shire Council, together with various agencies and organisations in the region, have been champions for change in this space for some time.

A two day summit under the Together We Can banner brought together some of those key agencies in the region, from local police, frontline family violence workers, as well as various community leaders, and people with specialist knowledge and training.

Addressing the attendees, mayor Jeff Springfield shared council’s vision for change.

He said it was important to remember that “we are all owners of this movement”.

“We are all role models for equality and respect and our silence should no longer be encouraged.”

This sentiment was echoed in the words of Detective Senior Sergeant Paul Holland from the Dandenong family Violence Unit who said at the summit it’s a problem that society can’t “arrest its way out of.

It’s not just a law and order issue.

Similarly, as chair of the Victims Survivors’ Advisory Council Jennifer Jackson told attendees, it’s not just a problem that society can ignore or write-off as a personal problem between intimate partners or family members.

There were some key takeaway messages that were reiterated throughout the summit.

One is that the most dangerous time for a woman in a domestic violence relationship is the time between when she’s thinking of leaving and when she does.

It’s then that she needs extra support – without pressure to leave.

Some attendees noted that the first they or their clients had acknowledged or verbalised their abusive relationship was disclosing it to a

staff member at a bank, fearful that their partner would drain bank accounts, immobilising them with nothing and no prospect to leave.

There was a powerful session on the second day of the summit elder abuse from Seniors Rights Victoria, and how that manifests.

There was also a forum on financial abuse and what that looks like.

One attendee shared that a client had been left with mounting debt – her former partner would drive up and down a freeway racking up speeding fines in a car in his former partner’s name.

There was a common theme there – that victims were unaware of their rights, snowed under by huge debt.

In the CALD community there are unique

challenges too, cultural implications and sometimes language barriers, which can leave victims even more isolated.

Without a network and without knowledge of where to seek help can be dangerous predicament.

Wrapping up two-day conference, Cardinia Shire Council’s collective impact facilitator, said it was great to be together again, making change.

“It’s been great to reinvigorate Together We Can after Covid-19 and let people know we haven’t gone anywhere.“ On the first day of the summit, The Orange Door service system navigator Andy Young presented the keynote address to share how the community can access frontline services,

and the importance of making the service available to the community.

“The Orange Door is not the answer, it is part of the solution,” Mr Young said.

He also shared an anecdote at an airport recently, when he and others witnessed a situation where a woman was being intimidated by a man, who appeared to be her partner.

He was proud that numerous people stepped up to call it out.

But the most important message was the reason behind the summit - to stop, end, and prevent family violence in Cardinia Shire.

The conversations are uncomfortable, difficult and harrowing.

There is so much more to be done, but change starts small.

A review of the Fernlea heritage site in Clyde undertaken in 2021 ruled two outbuildings to the South West of the farmhouse to have “little or no significance” according to the City of Casey’s acting manager for growth and investment Kaitlyn Zeeck.

An amendment to revise the curtilage of the heritage site on Tuckers Road was proposed at last week’s council meeting to ensure all items of primary significance as identified in the Conservation Management Plan were protected. The outbuildings were identified in the Ray Tonkin report of 2014 as contributing to the significance of the heritage setting.

Cranbourne charity Backpacks For Vic Kids (B4VK) held their first pop-up market at their Remount Way warehouse on Wednesday 18 May. Inclement weather forced a last minute venue change from the car park to inside the headquarters, but it did little to dampen the spirits of those in attendance.

With a deliberate focus on local businesses, among the stalls were Margie from Lynbrook’s spectacular scented candles and John’s restored clocks.

The Narre Warren Scout Group provided a much-appreciated sausage sizzle which hit the spot on a wintery night.

The biggest winner on the night was eightyear-old Elliot, who was thrilled with his purchase, Big Dog. All funds raised from the market will go towards their annual giving day total on Friday 10 June, with an overall donation goal of $75,000, enough to fund 1000 My Essentials (ME) backpacks.

Jail time for jealous lover

By Tara Cosoleto, AAP A man who unintentionally mowed down his former mistress’s new partner, killing the man, has been jailed for more than six years.

Bradley Andrew McStay, 35, hit Luke Price with his ute at Yannathan, near Lang Lang, in the early hours of 11 February, 2020.

McStay previously had an affair with Mr Price’s girlfriend but the woman broke off the relationship in the weeks before the fatal collision.

McStay was upset and jealous, the Supreme Court was told, and tried to repeatedly contact the woman although she rebuffed him.

On the evening of 10 February, the woman and Mr Price tried to avoid McStay after he told her he would come over to see her.

The pair and two others left a property in eastern Victoria in a sedan, but McStay followed, chasing the group erratically at high speeds for about 12 kilometres.

The sedan eventually slowed to a stop at Heads Road, in Yannathan, and Mr Price began getting out of the vehicle from the right passenger side.

Picture: DIEGO FEDELE, AAP came up alongside the sedan, but he clipped the vehicle and struck Mr Price, causing the 34-year-old to fall onto the ute’s bonnet and then underneath the vehicle.

Mr Price was dragged under the car for about 58 metres before he fell under a tyre and

was fatally injured.

McStay continued on for about 250 metres before he stopped his car. He made no effort to check on Mr Price’s condition or call triple zero.

In sentencing remarks on Tuesday, Justice

Michael Croucher said he accepted McStay did not intend to hit the sedan or Mr Price, but he should have stopped his ute once he realised the 34-year-old had been run over.

Justice Croucher said while Mr Price made the decision to exit the car, it was spurred on by McStay’s choice to follow the sedan erratically.

The judge noted Mr Price’s family and friends were still experiencing profound grief and anger over his death, and no sentence would reflect the value of Mr Price’s life.

But Justice Croucher said he needed to take into account McStay’s clear remorse, his “excellent” prospects of rehabilitation, and his irrelevant prior criminal history.

Justice Croucher also noted McStay had entered an early guilty plea to culpable driving causing death.

McStay was convicted and jailed for six years and six months, with a non-parole period of three years and six months.

His 311 days of pre-sentence detention were reckoned as already served.

If he did not plead guilty, McStay would have been jailed for eight years and six months with a non-parole period of five years and six months.

Brunt Road level crossing to be removed Early designs for a new road bridge to be built alongside the existing Brunt Road level crossing are now available to the public.

The boom gates at Brunt Road are down for up to 20 per cent of the morning peak, when 24 trains run through the crossing, causing significant traffic delays for the 8400 vehicles that use the crossing each day.

There have also been two near misses and one collision at the Brunt Road level crossing since 2012.

Early works to remove the Brunt Road level crossing will start at the end of the year.

The removal of the level crossing aims to improve safety, reduce congestion and allow more trains to run, more often on the Pakenham line.

The road bridge design means the crossing can be removed sooner, and construction will be less disruptive for road and rail users.

Member for Eastern Victoria Region Harriet Shing said it was a big win for the local community.

“The Beaconsfield and Officer communi-

ties have been calling for the removal of this dangerous level crossing for some time, and I’m thrilled we are getting on with the job,“ Ms Shign said.

A shared user path and separate pedestrian path along the road bridge will provide new local connections for the growing community.

To make way for the new road bridge, access to Brunt Road from Kenilworth Avenue and Cooper Beech Road will be closed permanently.

Vehicles will still be able to access Brunt Road via Just Joey Drive.

Brunt Road is one of 22 level crossings being removed as part of the $15 billion Pakenham line upgrade.

Crossings at Webb Street, Narre Warren and Station Street, Beaconsfield are among the next tranche of removals.

There are nine more to go by 2025 to make the Pakenham line level crossing-free, with 13 sets of boom gates already gone.

The upgrade of the Pakenham line also in-

cludes new high-capacity trains and the Metro Tunnel Project, which will create room for 120,000 more passengers on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines during peak periods.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan the project was transforming Melbourne’s busiest train line.

“Removing this dangerous and congested level crossing will improve travel for locals, creating a safer and smoother journey - taking us one step closer to getting rid of every level crossing on the Pakenham line.,“ Ms Allan said.

Over the coming months, crews on the ground will continue with site investigations for the Brunt Road level crossing removal ahead of early works, which will start at the end of the year.

Major construction is scheduled to begin in 2023, with the new road bridge opened and level crossing gone for good by 2025.

The community are being asked to have their say on the project by visiting engage.vic. gov.au by Monday 20 June.

Henry Road testing site closed

By Shelby Brooks Pakenham’s largest Covid-19 testing site has been shut down after almost two years in operation.

The Henry Road site at the IYU Reserve has been open since 26 June 2020 and tested thousands of locals as part of the drive through service.

Crews were pulling structures down on Monday 23 May, with signs telling the community to head to Cranbourne to be tested instead.

A spokesperson for Monash Health said the organisation had previously handed over management of the site to Australian Clinical Labs (ACL).

A hair-raising recovery

By Eleanor Wilson A passerby squatted next to Officer woman Gillian Gilbert in Dandenong’s David Street, grabbing her hand tightly as she wept on the nature strip.

It was 2013 and Gillian had just walked out of a specialist appointment at Dandenong Hospital.

The doctors had found two cancerous tumours in her breasts.

They told the then 43-year-old they would “try to get five years out of her”.

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she looked the passerby, a Muslim woman, in her eyes, which peeked through a slit in her burqa.

“Sometimes bad news isn’t always bad. You just have to find the good. Something good will always come from something bad, you just have to find it,” she told Gillian.

“I remember thinking ’yeah right, you have no idea love’,” Gillian recalled.

Of course, it hasn’t been an easy journey for the mother of four.

Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and countless appointments have meant Gillian spent many years consumed by a horrific diagnosis.

In fact, she continues to undergo a 10 year hormone treatment course to keep the cancer at bay.

But Gillian, who has worked for many years as a hairdresser and teacher’s aid, believes she has found the silver lining to her difficult battle - through an unsatisfactory job interview with a wig wholesaler in metropolitan Melbourne.

“During the interview, he said ’these women are more worried about losing their hair than the cancer itself’’,“ she recalled with a scowl on her face. “(He said) ’they’ve got no idea about wigs, how much they should be, where to get them from, a bottle of shampoo and conditioner for

After the interview, Gillian decided working for “someone like that” wasn’t for her.

“I also decided that if someone with no empathy or anything for women could run a wig shop then maybe I could too,” she said.

Five years down the track and Gillian is the proud owner of Wig Sisters in Officer, empowering women with cancer through functional, practical and affordable wigs and hair care.

“It’s really nice for me to see ladies that are newly diagnosed and to be able to talk

about and empathise with what they’re going through, you know, fix them up with some great looking hair so that they feel fantastic,” she said.

Running the store with the help of her friend and co-worker Kim, Gillian says the best part of her job is seeing her customers return a few months down the track with new-found confidence.

“They bounce in looking for something a bit blingy or something a bit longer or they’ve got a party or a wedding or a birthday or something,” she said.

“Every time I see these ladies, I always try to give them that little bit of good amongst the bad.”

Thankfully, Gillian is on a happier, healthier path today.

She has a thriving business, offers her spare time to volunteer with the Cancer Council and just welcomed her first grandchild.

But she maintains she still thinks about the Muslim woman that stopped to tell her to look on the bright side on one of her darkest days.

“I try and say to people, to my ladies that come in, whatever happens, just try to look for something good. I found the good in my bad,” she said.

“Every other day I thank the Muslim woman that stopped and told me to look for it, because maybe if she didn’t I wouldn’t have .”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Stirring trouble

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

A new employment initiative will create 200 jobs to service Victoria’s growing social housing sector, through a partnership with Jobs Victoria and Homes Victoria.

The Victorian Government’s $3 million Social Housing Employment Program offers employees secure work for at least 12 months while gaining an industry-relevant qualification.

The new jobs will be located in metropolitan Melbourne’s South-East and Gippsland.

The program applies to jobseekers who are social housing residents, women (particularly women over 45), people with disability, the long-term unemployed, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people aged 18 to 25, veterans and those from culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

The jobseekers will also receive mentoring support to ensure success in their new jobs.

Victorian Employment Minister Jaala Pulford said people living in social housing will benefit greatly from the initiative.

“We’re backing all Victorians to get the skills and opportunities they need to secure jobs in the social housing sector,” Mr Pulford said.

Victorian Housing Minister Richard Wynne said the program will build the states skilled workforce.

“As we deliver more social housing through the Big Housing Build, we will need more people to service the sector,” Mr Wynne said.

Recruitment has begun and will continue until mid-2023.

Jobs Victoria, Homes Victoria, Uniting Vic.Tas and Qualify Training are working together to deliver the initiative.

Jobs Victoria supports people looking for work and connects employers with the staff they need by providing information, advice, and support in person, on the phone, and via the Jobs Victoria online hub.

Nuisance leads to closure The Joan Phillips Reserve car park, on Hallam North Road in Endeavour Hills, will be permanently closed in early June to counter anti-social and illegal behaviour at the site, the City of Casey announced on Tuesday 24 May. The car park was established by Council to provide parking for recreational and equestrian (horse float) user access to the reserve, although data shows it has rarely been used for this purpose.

With its elevated position, the site has since become an unofficial lookout spot, attracting a significant number of vehicles and visitors to the area who come to enjoy the view, but park illegally, create traffic hazards and leave rubbish behind, the council said.

City of Casey chief executive officer Glenn Patterson said Council had installed signs in the area to advise that parking on the road shoulder was not permitted, as well as No Standing signs in the car park during evening hours to curb nuisance behaviour.

“Unfortunately, the signs have had no impact on visitor behaviour in the area and following ongoing discussions with surrounding residents who have been adversely affected by anti-social behaviour and dangerous parking

Narre Warren South P-12 celebrates a milestone year

By Eleanor Wilson Narre Warren South P-12 College celebrated 20 years of education on Monday 23 Mayalong with 12 of its founding staff members who also started their careers at the Amberly Drive address two decades ago.

Celebrating with a staff assembly and breakfast, founding principal Ross Miller recalled the school’s early days - and the education department’s low ball estimate of enrolment numbers.

“The predictions were 300 students and they opened the doors at 807, so you can appreciate the enormity of that exercise,” current college principal Peter Thatcher said.

Today the school has grown to cater for over 2600 students, supported by 330 staff members.

“I’m just so amazed and proud of what we started 20 years ago and I always said the potential for this school was enormous, and we’re retaining that potential now,” Mr Miller said.

“It’s taken a lot of hard work, a lot of community support, it’s been a fantastic journey and this school is really on the map now, it’s recognised as a really high achieving school.”

Mr Thatcher said he understands and empathises with the challenges Mr Miller undertook to establish the college.

“I’ve done it twice in my 39-year career and [it’s] extremely difficult,“ he said.

Teacher Vera Poliakow said her 20 years at the college has given her the rare chance to see a school grow and develop from humble beginnings.

“To get to here, the road has been challenging but rewarding,” she said.

The group of founding staff members enjoy a morning tea to acknowledge their contribution to the school. 281566 Starting as a second year teaching graduate, Pauleen Churchill said her decision to commit 20 years to the the college was owed to the vast opportunities she has been awarded.

“There’s been so many diverse opportunities. Every year I’ve grown and changed as a teacher so that’s what has maintained my desire,” she said.

“And the students here, I just love them.

They’re a great bunch of kids.

“I work really closely now with the EAL students and just to see the light bulb switching when they finally get something you’ve taught them makes it all worthwhile.

“[The kids] have grown to take pride in the school, over the years with the work and dedication of our principals and leadership, for the grounds to have grown from the dirt patch that we were standing on, they take pride in their surroundings and what our school is and what we’ve achieved,“ added Mrs Poliakow.

Foundation teacher Jess Henry, who also received her 20-year badge, said the school grounds were like a “dust bowl” in the college’s early stages.

“When we first arrived we had to get all of our classroom supplies in a little cardboard box. You got just one set of everything - one set of Textas,” she recalled.

“There were no books - we had to photocopy and staple and make our own books.

“There were secondhand library books coming from op shops and things.

“Basically everything outside was dirt and dust - we couldn’t open windows.“ Primary teacher Rachna Gupta added the school was just a drawing plan when she interviewed for a teaching position at the college in 2001.

“We were interviewed in Dandenong and I said “well, where’s the school?” and they said “it’s being built”,” she recalled.

“That was in December and the school was opened in the end of January “It was a dust bowl, there was dust everywhere and the principal’s office was in a small portable.

Like all of the teachers Star News spoke to, Mrs Gupta agreed the culture of the school was one of the driving reasons she had reached the career milestone at the school.

“The staff have always been very inclusive and I’ve seen siblings and generations grow up and I know the families,” she said.

“It’s nice to be acknowledged.”

Berwick on the airwaves

By Marcus Uhe Primary @ Pioneers Park in Berwick was buzzing on Thursday 19 May as it hosted a live outside broadcast of ABC Radio’s Mornings program with Virginia Trioli.

The live audience was glued to the twotime Walkley Award winner as she engaged with local political candidates, prominent community members and more to find out what mattered to voters in the seats of Bruce and La Trobe.

Ms Trioli, who grew up in the outer suburbs, said her upbringing allowed her to relate to constituents in the South East.

“I come from Nunawading originally in the outer east, further north than this, but I’m an outer suburbs girl as well, so I know exactly what life is like out here,” she said.

“This is one of the biggest growth areas of Melbourne. It’s a real representation of what cost of living pressures must be like, housing pressures, transport, roads.

“You’ve got one seat that’s Labor (Bruce) and one seat that’s Liberal (La Trobe) and a lot of independents as well, so I thought it was a perfect microcosm.

“The two seats kind of straddle the representation of modern life in Melbourne and Victoria right now, in a way that isn’t often spoken about.”

While admitting she was not familiar with the suburb, she was blown away by the scenery in the park as she and her broadcast team were treated to delightful late May sunshine among the autumn foliage.

“It’s glorious isn’t it? I studied up the history of this park and this area, when it was first settled, the Indigenous owners as well, their 10s of thousands of years of occupation.

“It’s absolutely beautiful. You’ve got this lovely building and this National Trust shop there, which I plan to go into and buy some

By Elle Cecil The health benefits of dancing for seniors range from improving your physical health to creating strong social connections that increase your sense of wellbeing.

A 2018 study by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) showed a positive relationship between dancing and the physical and emotional health of older Australians.

Participants in the study experienced improved flexibility, boosted energy levels and better posture. Further studies have found that dancing can slow or even reverse the signs of ageing in the brain.

Among these benefits, older Australians are likely to experience an improvement in balance, coordination and spatial awareness, which in turn could reduce their likelihood of falls.

Dancing also provides an increase in heart rate, encouraging the movement of oxygen throughout the body. This has shown positive effects on heart and lung condition, and has the potential to lessen the risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease. Regular dance also assists in weight management, toning muscle, improving strength and reducing joint pain.

The benefits of dancing aren’t just physical. Regular dancing has been shown to increase the size of the hippocampus, which is the region of the brain responsible for spatial navigation and memory formation.

Not only did study participants enjoy a range of physical and mental progress, they also experienced a shift in overall mood, selfesteem and confidence.

This is attributed to a combination of the effects of physical exercise and the social interactions and connections formed during the dance classes.

Shooting for Cup glory Young soccer players from across the South East played with gusto for the prestigious Paul Wade Cup. St John’s Regional College in Dandenong hosted teams from its feeder primary schools for the soccer gala day on 9 May. Endeavour Hills-based St Paul Apostle North School and St Kevin’s Primary School – Hampton Park capped off the day with an entertaining, joyful grand final.

Also competing were St Mary’s Primary

School in Dandenong, Holy Family School in Doveton, St Francis de Sales Primary in Lynbrook, St Anthony’s Primary School in Noble Park and St Gerard’s Primary School in Dandenong North.

Representatives from Melbourne City Football Club and Dandenong City Soccer Club also enjoyed the action.

Sudden axing stuns Koop

By David Nagel and Tyler Lewis Sacked Officer coach Doug Koop feels blindsided and disappointed after being dumped in extraordinary circumstances in the infancy stages of his sixth season at the club.

Koop went through his weekly routine and sent a message to his assistant coaches – including his replacements Anthony Bernardo and Troy Tharle – in preparation for training on Tuesday 7 May after a 78-point loss to Woori Yallock in round four of the Outer East Premier Division.

Koop then received a message from Officer president Nick McLennan that day, requesting a meeting prior to training.

“Nick asked me if I’d like a beer, and I said ‘No, I’ve got training to take’, and he said we need to talk about that,” Koop recalled.

“That’s when the penny dropped…prior to that I had absolutely no clue I was getting sacked.”

An unofficial review of the club had been taking place behind the scenes, by a group including former president Barry O’Loughlin and club legend Mick Moylan, who attended a committee meeting on Monday 6 May, to put forward their review’s findings.

O’Loughlin and Moylan, both currently not part of the committee, put forward a motion that Koop and his long-time ally – and reserves coach - Billy King, needed to be stood down immediately to avoid a second mass walk out of players.

Officer also had a mass walk-out prior to the commencement of the 2022 season.

The motion was then voted upon, with a non-unanimous decision by the committee seeing Koop and King given their marching orders.

Club president McLennan was not aware that the motion was being put forward prior to the committee meeting taking place.

Koop took the reins at Starling Road in 2017, leading the Kangaroos to their first finals appearance since 2004 in just his second season at the club.

He repeated the dose in 2019 before holding a 6-3 record at the conclusion of the Covidimpacted 2021 season.

He coached 61 matches for the Kangaroos recording 26 wins, one draw and 34 losses.

But his renowned football smarts were of no assistance this time around.

“There was no clue, no talk, no whisper, we’ve just been busting our gut to be as competitive as we could be with what we had, especially after the (pre-season) walkout,” Koop said.

“I’m dumbfounded and extremely disappointed in the whole process…it hasn’t been handled well.

“There’s been no reasons given, just that there was a motion put forward that I be removed or players were going to leave the club.

“There’s no substance to it, and why was it such a dramatic situation that it needed to happen now, I don’t understand.”

The 59-year-old Koop had struggled somewhat through Covid, while the pre-season walk-out, and opportunity missed to claim a winnable premiership in 2021, had also taken their toll.

“All those things had slowly eaten away at me and I had an agreement with Nick (McLennan) that this would be my last year,” Koop explained.

“He agreed with that, the committee agreed with that, and Nick even came to me and asked if I would help the club look for a new coach, which I agreed to do.

“Everything was going as smoothly as it could, considering all the circumstances.

“This has just come out of the woodwork, not a word from the people driving the agenda and now I’m not coaching anymore.

“The process has been performed with a general lack of respect…which I have now lost for others.

“Their intentions are good, because they’re

Koop said he had received messages of support from players who were shocked, and thought his sacking was not a decision made in the best interests of the club.

Koop, who has also been cast aside by Cranbourne and Dromana in previous stints at those clubs, said 2022 had provided a tough challenge after the pre-season walk-out of some high-calibre players.

But he was confident his honest and fullfronted approach to his coaching was not a part of the issue.

“I’m confident to say none of them left because of me,” he said.

“I’m brutally honest, some people like it and some people don’t, but we had a pretty good group in 2021 and we were potentially premiers last year.

“If Covid doesn’t hit and we win the flag… it’s a totally different situation.

“Now I feel like I’ve been cast aside like a dirty, smelly rag.”

The Gazette spoke to an Officer club insider, who wished to remain anonymous, but gave an opinion on what has transpired, both in the pre-season and most recently with the sacking.

“Let me put it this way, players left in the pre-season for various reasons, but there was a common thread through many of those departures,” the source said.

“There was still a healthy respect for Doug

as a person, but not so much for his coaching.

“In Doug’s defence it could have been managed better, but those involved have the best interests of the footy club at heart.

“The general feeling now is we need to move on, get a new coaching panel together and get the club up and about.

“There’s a lot of work to be done…but when things aren’t right, they need to be sorted out.

“I think the general consensus is the club is now in a better place to move forward.”

McLennan explained how the process of terminating Koop’s contract so early in the season took place.

“At our last committee meeting the committee was approached by two members of the club, who put it to the committee that if the coaches weren’t removed effective immediately, the playing group were leaving,” he said.

“And that the opinion of the players was that the coaches needed to change, and it needed to happen now, because if a change didn’t occur, the club’s doors would be shut within a few weeks.

“The vote took place, it certainly wasn’t a unanimous vote, and it appears to be a vote that has very much driven a wedge between individuals within the club and that happens with contentious decisions.

“But ultimately the majority of the committee decided it was time to move in a different coaching direction and terminate the contracts of Doug Koop and William King.”

McLennan and heart-and-soul ruckman Sean Roach were the pair left to break the news to Koop and King.

“Myself and Sean Roach met with Doug and Bill the following evening prior to training and revealed to them the decision,” he said.

“They (Doug and Bill) were as surprised with the decision, and how it had happened, as I and Sean Roach were, but that being said took the decision quite well.

“I know this is not how Doug or Bill wanted to finish at the club, and this is certainly not how I wanted to see them finish their time at the club.

“From there the playing group was advised about the decision, and that has been met with a varying degree of opinions.

“But ultimately, (and) as I have said to the playing group: ‘what has happened has happened, we can’t change what has happened, it’s now about what we do going forward’.”

Bernardo and Tharle will coach the club for the rest of the season.

Improving Lions lay it on the line against ladder leaders

By David Nagel The Pakenham Women’s team has produced one of its best performances of the season in a 5.9.39 to 3.7.25 defeat at the hands of ladder-leaders Olinda Ferny Creek on Saturday.

The Lions had the better of the opening quarter, but failed to convert their many forward entries with the Olinda backline holding firm under pressure.

Rover Bianca Moody, who kicked five goals against Yarra Junction last week, kicked the only behind from either team in the first quarter.

Pakenham’s backline was also super impressive, with Tash Wakenshaw, Emma Caulfield, Bec Domotor and Steph Grentell fighting hard to deny the top-team in the competition any score in the first term.

Sarah Connelly, Jenna Green and Donna Monckton were providing run on the wings, while Abbey Tognazzini, Courtney Stephens and Chloe Nagel were matching the ladder leaders in the midfield.

Pakenham got reward for effort at the start of the second quarter when Kayla Menere kicked truly, before Olinda slowly took control of the contest.

Belloni and Ella Smith kicked consecutive goals for the Bloods, before Stephens answered just before half time to cut the margin to just three points at the main break.

The Lions had an early chance to take the lead at the start of the third quarter, before goals to Vanessa Bateman and Isla Bradbury put the home side out of reach.

Phoebe Dixon iced the game for the Bloods at the start of the last quarter before a late goal to Menere gave the scoreboard some respectability.

Belloni, Collins and Leah Cody were terrific for the winners, while Tognazzini, Stephens and Wakenshaw were best for the Lions.

Olinda Ferny Creek host third-placed Healesville this week, while Pakenham heads to Belgrave for a 4.45pm start.

An inaccurate Healesville had a whopping 39 scoring shots in its 15.24.114 to 1.0.6 win over Seville.

The Bloods had nine individual goal-kickers, with Paula Pavic and Jaimee Petersen the stars of the show with four goals each on the board.

Georgina Jacobs kicked two, while Alex Bryan, Amy Frazzetto, Jess Raaymakers, Lauren Rogers, Mon Willemsen and Indigo Wraith-Tenson all chimed in with singles.

Jess Dight kicked Seville’s only goal.

Yarra Junction has finished strongly recording an in-the-end comprehensive win over Monbulk at Monbulk.

The Eagles held the Hawks scoreless, winning 6.6.42 to 0.0.0, but doubled their score in the final quarter booting 3.3 for the term.

The Eagles showed promising signs in a loss against Pakenham last week, and continued that form against the Hawks.

Prime movers Jade Mewburn and Emily Spicer snagged a couple each for the winners, while Maddi Dodd and Shania Turner never gave up for the Hawks.

And Upwey-Tecoma has produced a powerhouse performance to down Belgrave by

106 points at Upwey.

The 16.10.106 to 0.0.0 final score basically sums up it all with the Tigers totally dominant from the first bounce.

Three of the Tigers’ guns, Jess Occhipinti, Kiana Oates and Alex Bantock filled up their boots on the night, booting six, four and three goals respectively, while Dani Gisler kicked two and Leah Borg bagged another.

Tahlia Studham, Sam Temopoulos and Abi Wilson tried their hearts out for Belgrave.

Mixed bag for Warriors

By Jonty Ralphsmith Pakenham Warriors Championship Women’s team is fourth on the ladder after 10 games after beating Southern Peninsula by four points on Saturday and losing to Hume by six on Sunday.

The Warriors have risen to the challenge of playing in the top-flight of Big V basketball.

The Warriors had to overcome a slow start against Southern Peninsula, working their way to a win after being down by 14 points at the first break.

The women were quick out of the blocks the following day, up by 10 points at halftime, before they hit a wall and were overrun by the visitors.

Haille Nickerson was typically dominant in game one, her 32 minutes of court time yielded 16 points and 14 rebounds. Against Hume, she scored 17 points.

Pakenham’s Division Two Men’s team recorded a 10-point loss in a difficult match up against Sherbrooke…weakening the Warriors grasp on top spot.

There were six lead changes throughout the Sunday afternoon contest as the Warriors did not let Sherbrooke get away from them for much of the first three quarters.

However, the visitors took a 12-point lead into three-quarter-time, after a strong end to the stanza, and did not relinquish the lead,

consigning Pakenham to a loss.

“Our defensive pressure is looking really good every game, we’re just identifying some patterns that we’ll address at training,” said Pakenham coach Rob Roberts.

“There’s probably only been one game where we have had all our players on the court so I’m really proud of the boys who we’ve got who keep pushing sides with some pretty big budgets.”

A knee injury to Nathan Dodgson changed the way the Warriors setup, further complicating the difficult match-up mid-game as the big man was limited to just over eight minutes.

Joe Davis (19 points, 10 rebounds) and Joshua Dow (21 points) were each influential.

“Josh Dow is without a doubt one of the top defenders in the league,” Roberts said.

“He stops the best scorers regularly and he had another ripping game.

“To have Dowy with his defensive pressure is so important - he was up against a big guy who was athletic but he stayed with him.”

In the youth league, a strong final quarter by the women against Collingwood was not enough to overcome an 18 point three-quarter-time deficit as they went down by four points.

In a tight contest that contained eight lead changes in the final quarter, the men lost by four points to the undefeated Keysborough.

Eels to take on the Tigers

The Pakenham Men’s Rugby League team will be out to claim its third victory of the season when the Eels host Sunbury Tigers at Comely Banks Recreation Reserve on Saturday.

The Eels have played six games this season, for a return of two wins and a draw, and currently sit in second place on the Premiership Second Grade ladder.

The Eels have had wins over Sunshine Cowboys (24-16) and Melton Broncos (26-22) and had a 24-24 draw with the Cowboys in round one.

The Eels leading scorers this season are Dominko Tuau 22, Konisitutone Latu 16, Jayden Taylor 14, Anton Ikupu 12, Malachi Kire 8, Jaevarn McGee 8, Robert Aratangi 4, Dylan Cox 4 and Manihera Jonassen 4…who are sure to trouble the Tigers on the Eels flash new pitch at Comely Reserve this Saturday.

The Eels should be feeling fresh and ready to go after having last week’s bye.

But while the biggest players on the Eels

roster were sitting on the sidelines, the junior leagues and under-15 girls travelled to the Doveton Steelers home ground at Betula Reserve. The highlight for the Eels this week was the terrific win of the under-15 girls who were coming off a tough game against Casey Warriors last week.

The Eels this week faced an extremely hungry and defensively strong Werribee Bears.

The Eels and Bears went toe to toe and try for try.

At the very back end of the second half the Eels managed to breakaway with some tries in quick succession to narrowly win a great contest 36 to 32.

Autupuna Williams-McGregor, Tylah-Marie Tautu, Makaylah La’Brooy and Brooklyn Kahotea fought the game out for the Eels, while Kassidy Kahotea kept her side in the hunt with three impressive tries.

The men’s game this Saturday against Sunbury Tigers kicks off at Comely banks Recreation Reserve at 3.15pm.

Future legends chalk up unique Tiger milestone Cardinia Tigers Junior Football Club is celebrating its first milestones.

The Tigers – established back in 2019 – have had six of its inaugural players celebrate 25 games. And while 25 games isn’t your typical accomplishment in footy, a milestone outdoing a pandemic is one worth celebrating.

Ashton Kirwin, Blake Enright, Cooper Hall, Dean Ventura, Jasper Vella and Noah Francis all broke the 25 game barrier in picture perfect conditions at the weekend.
