“If it’s too big for our donation bins people just dump them when we’re not here and we can’t be here 24 hours a day.”

The op shop has received an influx of donations with more and more people working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

Bev said the donations haven’t stopped coming as people have extra time at home to sort through their items.

Pakenham Op Shop volunteers are reminding locals not to dump donations after receiving an abundance of products outside of the stores opening hours.

The shop has a rotating team of 27 volunteers who sort through the donations as a way to give back to their community.

Pakenham Op Shop Inc. secretary Bev Burley said she was disappointed by local atti-

tudes when it comes to giving pre-loved goods a new life.

“We get a lot of rubbish dumped from people who don’t want to do a hard rubbish collection,” she said.

“We have our big bin which Suez takes away weekly which costs $160 each time and we only sell our stuff for about $2, so it is a challenge.

“We got in the other day with 200 to 300 books dumped at our back entrance - I

“It started up more when Covid-19 began and it really hasn’t ceased,” Bev said.

“A lot of people are also downsizing or moving north from Melbourne because they don’t want to live here anymore.”

Bev said the shop depends on donations when done the right way.

“It would be lovely if people come in and asked if the donations can be accepted,” she said.

By Shelby Brooks and Marcus Uhe Incumbent federal member for La Trobe Jason Wood will be top of the ballot when voters head to the polls next month.

Liberal MP Mr Wood drew the highest place on the election ballot voting card from the eight named candidates for the seat of La Trobe, giving him a significant advantage in his quest to win the seat for a sixth time in the Federal Election on 21 May. Mr Wood will face seven challengers for the seat he first won in 2004 and in last Friday’s ballot draw secured the prized number one spot, ahead of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation candidate Hadden Ervin and Greens candidate and past Cardinia Shire councillor Michael Schilling.

Labor candidate Abhimanyu Kumar drew fifth place in the ballot.

The number one spot is considered an advantage in that it secures the donkey vote, where preferences are recorded by disenfranchised or disinterested voters by simply following the order in which the candidates appear on the ballot paper.

The other candidates (in ballot order) are Hadden Ervin of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation, Michael Schilling of The Australian Greens, Merryn Mott of United Australia Party, Abhimanyu (Abi) Kumar of the Australian Labor Party, Rebecca Skinner of Australian Federation Party, Michael Abelman of Liberal Democratic Party and Helen Jeges of Animal Justice Party.

Mr Wood was elected as La Trobe MP in 2004 and was returned in 2007. He was defeated by Labor candidate Laura Smyth in the 2010 general election, but won the seat back in 2013 and held it again in the 2016 and 2019 elections.

In neighbouring Monash, veteran MP Russell Broadbent also faces seven challengers.

The new and improved synthetic track will provide a premium racing surface and improve safety at the racecourse.

Track’s all weather upgrade A major upgrade to the synthetic track at Pakenham Racing Club will deliver a boost to the industry over winter months and improve safety.

Minister for Racing Martin Pakula announced on Wednesday 27 April the State Government would be allocating more than $1 million from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund for the project.

“Pakenham Racing Club is one of Victoria’s busiest racecourses and that’s why we are backing this upgrade to ensure it continues to

provide an all-weather track option,“ Mr Pakula said.

“We’re investing in these upgrades to support jobs and improve safety and welfare outcomes for Victoria’s racing industry.”

The club is investing more than $875,000 and Racing Victoria with Country Racing Victoria are contributing more than $1.5 million to undertake the works.

Racing Victoria chair Brian Kruger said it was a “significant enhancement“.

“This significant enhancement to the synthetic track will ensure that it is presented in great condition to promote safe racing and allow for the programming of crucial race meetings during the winter period,“ he said.

The new and improved synthetic track will provide a premium racing surface and improve safety at the racecourse.

Pakenham hosts its own full calendar of race meetings, but its all-weather surface means it also plays an important role as an al-

ternative venue for hosting race meetings during the winter season.

The project includes removing the existing surface material, which will be either reused for pathways around the venue or mixed with the new synthetic material and reinstalled to construct the new surface on the track. It will generate 15 jobs during construction.

The synthetic track upgrade is anticipated to be completed by May to support Racing Victoria’s winter racing program.

War medal lost in Tynong

By Shelby Brooks A man has been reunited with his grandfather’s war medal that he lost along on the Princes Highway in Tynong North on Anzac Day, Monday 25 April.

Andy Smith, of Boronia, was riding his motorcycle back from a Longwarry Vietnam Veterans Anzac Day dawn service when his grandfather’s medal flew off his jacket.

“It was approximately 8.20-8.30am when I heard a “PING“ and realised the medal had come off my jacket and bounced down the road in the left hand lane at 80km/h,“ Mr Smith told Star News.

“I’m absolutely devastated this has happened. My anxiety levels are off the scale as you could appreciate.

“It’s only a small part of my family history but it means so much.“ Mr Smith believes the medal fell off somewhere between Gumbuya World and Tynong Road, on the Melbourne bound side of the Princes Highway.

A Facebook post asking for help has been shared over 600 times in 24 hours so Mr Smith is hopefully someone will locate it.

“It was one of my grandfather’s service medals. He fought in Western Europe,“ he said.

“It’s slightly larger than a 20c coin. On the edge it has engraved 41646 PTE. H.SMITH. N.Z.E.F.“ Mr Smith’s grandfather was Private Henry Smith, apparently he didn’t pass the medical examination in Australia so he travelled to New Zealand and signed up for the war there.

He served in Western Europe from late 1916 to 1918, Mr Smith said.

Planting a greener future Families are planting the seeds for a better future by getting behind Earth Day 2022 at Deep Creek Reserve, Pakenham.

The event held by Cardinia Shire Council was a day of free family fun and education.

Children got the chance to learn how to live a more sustainable life and got involved in games and challenges as they explored the Deep Creek area.

A range of free activities were available including planting seedlings and meeting earth

worms up close as well as taking part in solar science to learn about the power of the sun.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Jeff Springfield said council was proud to provide environmental education to the community.

“Families could join in on Earth Day activities and learn how to reduce waste, save energy and promote native habitats in their local community,“ Cr Springfield said.

“This was a good opportunity for kids to get their hands dirty and learn more about their natural environment.”

Prevent family violence Tickets for the 2022 Together We Can Community Leadership Summit are now available.

The annual summit is a free opportunity for community members and organisations to come together to discuss ways to stop, prevent and end family violence in Cardinia Shire.

This year’s summit will take place on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 May at the Cardinia Cultural Centre and will cover what family violence looks like, how it can be stopped, explore actions to address family violence within Cardinia, how the laws work and where people can get local support.

The official summit opening will be held

Tuesday 17 May from 9.15am to 3.30pm.

The keynote speaker will be Andy Young of The Orange Door on The Orange Door Access Point with presentations on what is financial abuse and how to recover by WIRE, how to encourage people to take action against violence against women and children by Common Cause, how to recognise and respond to family/ domestic violence by WHISE, respectful Relationships in Schools - what is it and does it work by the Department of Education and Training, who contributes to stopping, preventing and ending family violence in Cardinia Shire by Service Mapping and how can we action the council’s Liveability Plan by Community Solutions.

The event on Wednesday 18 May will run from 9.15am to 2.45pm with Jennifer Jackson of the Victim Survivors Advisory Council as the keynote speaker, talking on ‘how advocacy creates change’.

Presentations will be on holding perpetrators to account and protection of victim/survivors by The County Court, impacts of family violence on children by Windemere, our local one stop support service by The Orange Door, what they do, how they do it and why by Victoria Police.

Witness call Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault in Hallam in the early hours of Wednesday 20 April.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have been told a 23-year-old Endeavour Hills man was walking eastbound on the Princes Highway in Hallam between 12am and 12.30am. The man walked out into traffic with multiple cars swerving to avoid him, before he crossed onto the southern side of the road.

A vehicle pulled over to check on the man and observed an unknown man exit a white hatch-back with a small spoiler, between Tinks Road and Raven Crescent, and strike the victim with a large baton or potentially a baseball bat, police say.

The 23-year-old man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Inner Wheel Club of Narre Warren members are inviting locals to step out with them at Wilson Botanic Park next Friday, as they walk to raise money for stem cell cord blood research.

The tranquil setting of the gardens will be the backdrop for the club’s Two for Ten walk where participants donate a $10 registration fee to take part in the two kilometre charity walk.

The largest female service club in the world, Inner Wheel’s Australia branch has been supporting stem cell from cord blood research for 20 years and has raised more than four million dollars for the cause.

Inner Wheel Narre Warren cord blood director Anne McGill was responsible for establishing the project when she was Inner Wheel Australia president in the early 2000s.

“It was in its infancy at that time and we wanted to work with a project that would grow with Inner Wheel,” she said.

Current club president Linda Wallace en-

couraged members of the public to join in the club’s second annual walkathon.

“Anyone can join us and they can register on the day,” she said.

Cord blood is regarded as one of the most valuable tools being used in blood disease research and is contributing to finding cures for the treatments of leukaemia, strokes, heart disease and other autoimmune diseases such as Cystic Fibrosis and Cerebral Palsy.

It contains a diverse mixture of important cells, including stem cells and is a particularly rich source of haematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), which have the ability to create and heal our organs, blood and the immune system.

Because of their “youth”, stem cells from umbilical cord blood are among the most flexible and potent in the body.

Earlier in the month the local club invited prominent cord blood researcher Professor Suzie Miller to chat about her work in the field.

Hundreds pay respects

By Jamie Salter Hundreds of people rose before the sun and braved the cold on Monday to remember Australia’s servicemen and women at Pakenham’s Anzac Day ceremony.

Pakenham RSL president Gary Elliott led the proceedings at the Pakenham war memorial with reverend Matthew Scheffer leading the community in prayer.

“It’s important that we remember what those lives were lost for and the fact that we now have all these freedoms,“ Mr Elliott said.

“I hate seeing what’s happening in Ukraine at the moment and I hope the lessons learned from the first and the second world war are remembered.“ Local David Young shared the story of his mother Wilma who was a decorated former POW nurse in World War II. “My mother was involved in the early 60’s in getting this started when she was a member of the RSL and she’d be proud of the way it’s developed over the years,“ Mr Young said.

“They started off with only half a dozen people originally and it really keeps the engagement of the broader community in a very special period of Australia’s history.“ Representatives from community services and organisations were asked to lay wreaths at the base of the cenotaph including the Pakenham RSL, Rotary, SES and police, as well as Cardinia Shire councillors and the Federal La Trobe MP Jason Wood.

She said it was an honour to sing at the service.

He said it was great to see local community

members show their support after a couple years of Covid-19 disruptions.

“People were probably bit tentative about coming out at first but I think a really good amount of people came,“ he said.

“It’s really significant we’ve been able to meet together again particularly for older people to see the support of the community in recognising people from the local area who have served.“

Support for young vets

By Marcus Uhe Botanic Ridge veteran Stuart Couch is using Anzac Day to raise awareness of the Young Veterans group.

Established by Chris and Scott May, Afghanistan veterans who grew up in Berwick, Young Veterans is a volunteer run and operated group open to anyone who has served in the regular or reserve armed forces.

Mr Couch, who served two tours of Iraq, is a volunteer with Young Veterans South East Melbourne and said the group was about connectig those who have experienced similar incidents and telling stories that people would understand.

“It’s about social interactions, celebrating Anzac Day all year round, catching up with like-minded people and sharing that brotherhood and camaraderie,” Mr Couch said.

“Most of the guys that I served with are spread around the country so catching up with them is difficult due to distance.

“Young Veterans helps to make new bonds and friendships in your local community.”

Events run by the group include camping trips, sailing lessons, barbecues, dinners at local restaurants and RSLs. Veterans are also encouraged to pitch hobbies and projects with a community or group focus.

“If you’ve got an idea of something you want to do, we’ll support you, as long as it involves other people.”

Young Veterans operates separately from RSL groups, as some veterans suffer from the incorrect perception that RSL groups are only for those that served in the World Wars, The Korean War or Vietnam, according to Mr Couch, a committee member at the Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL. He said one of the primary roles of the group was to ensure former defence members

the experiences of the original ANZACs. “Some struggle with living up to the idea of what a veteran is if they’re not running on beaches at Gallipoli, and if they haven’t faced the same type of warfare, their experiences don’t equate to the same thing,” Mr Couch said.

“As soldiers we’re always taught to move forward to the next objective but sometimes

had someone to talk to in times of need.

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare published in September 2021 found the suicide rate compared to the Australian population for ex-service males was 24 per cent higher, and 102 per cent higher for exservice women.

Affordable housing push

By Jamie Salter Ahead of the upcoming Federal Election, local candidates have shared their plans to secure affordable housing for La Trobe residents.

Labor Candidate for La Trobe Abi Kumar said the Federal Government should construct more housing supply to counter the current rental shortage.

“Labor will create the $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund which will build 30,000 new social and affordable housing properties in its first five years, and create thousands of jobs,“ Mr Kumar said.

“In Scott Morrison’s budget, the Prime Minister and his government failed to include a single dollar for social and affordable housing.

“Labor will act - building new social and affordable housing which will directly support 21,500 full-time jobs across the construction industry and broader economy, per year, over five years, nationwide – and one in 10 direct

Liberal candidate for La Trobe Jason Wood said his government was committed to ensuring housing was more affordable.

“10,000 First Home Loan Deposit Scheme places will be available to eligible first home buyers from 1 July 2021 to 30 June 2022,” Mr Wood said.

“The homebuilder scheme also made housing across La Trobe more affordable while supporting over 78,000 jobs in Victoria alone.

“Importantly, interest rates are always lower under a Liberal Government!“ He said single parents would be able to buy their own home with a deposit of only two per cent.

“We have extended the First Home Loan Deposit Scheme which allows people to borrow without having to take out mortgage insurance,” he said.

“As the Prime Minister said, ensuring that more renters can buy their own home and get the security of home ownership is essential.”

No ’knockout blow’ delivered yet in election stoush

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Despite gaffes and controversies, there has been no “knockout blow” in the 21 May federal election sparring so far, says a politics expert.

Monash University politics senior lecturer Dr Zareh Ghazarian said election polls seemed to have been locked in for a comfortable Labor win for some months.

Labor’s two-party preferred polling hadn’t dipped below 53 per cent since last year.

“It suggests there is not much volatility in the electorate and that people already made

up their minds a while back – which is particularly troubling for the Government.”

The major parties still have ‘fairly unpopular leaders”, Dr Ghazarian said.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s popularity has elevated slightly in the opening weeks, despite controversy around Warringah candidate Katherine Deves.

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese’s isolation from the campaign due to Covid illness – after a first week dominated by his unemployment rate gaffe - was so far having little impact.

“Unless (the illness) had gone on a bit longer I can’t see it having an impact on Labor’s performance in the polls.

“Because it was in the second week, there’s still plenty of time for the Opposition leader to take part in the final weeks of the campaign.”

So far, the campaign themes followed a “fairly standard policy pattern”. The Coalition had hammered issues such as the economy and jobs, and the ALP also the economy, cost of living, health and education.

After a subdued Easter and Anzac Day pe-

riod, Dr Ghazarian expects campaigning and advertising to be “frenzied” ahead of 9 May – when early voting centres open.

“I’d expect a lot of people to vote early like the last time around. “ In the meantime, voters can expect a barrage of campaign ads across TV, social media, print, and radio.

“This will be when the campaign budget will be largely spent, in that goal to attract as many voters as they can.

“It will focus on what the Government has done, and what it will do in the future.”

Boutique market delights

By Eleanor Wilson Berwick residents swapped out exclusive international imports for all things boutique and local on Saturday, at the Berwick Boutique Craft and Food Market.

Presented by Craft Markets Australia, The Berwick market showcased over 60 stalls of completely handmade goods, with everything from sweet treats to locally brewed alcoholic beverages and handmade clothes and toys.

Area warden and social media manager Alyssa Pretorius said prospective stalls undergo a thorough approval process before they are accepted into the boutique market.

“The market is really about your bread and butter local producers, so we take great care to ensure everything is homemade and at least 80 per cent the stall owners product,” she said.

“By coming down to the market, customers know they are supporting a local small business, which is part of what makes it great.“ Set amongst the beautiful gardens of Berwick’s Old Cheese Factory, the market is a completely commercial product-free event with not even a Coke can in sight.

“Even our food and coffee vans have to provide local products, so instead of commercial soft drinks there are drinks on offer from small businesses,” Mrs Pretorius said.

Highlights of the market included homemade jewellery stalls, hand-knitted baby clothes, hand-carved chopping boards, garden products such as plants and succulents and a variety of home baked goods.

Gold coin donations were collected by Berwick District Woodworkers Club, who dedicate their time to making handmade toys for those in need.

The woodworker’s club is using some of the market proceeds to create toys for Windermere’s Mums and Bubs, a Craft Markets Australia-endorsed service that provides skills and

support for young and single mothers facing homelessness.

This is the first season of Berwick markets for Craft Markets Australia who have been operating since 1975 and run an array of markets in Victorian locations including Mount Martha, Portsea, Yarra Glen and Mornington.

Ms Pretorius said the company tried to curate the market stallholders to include a mix of seasoned favourites and new faces.

“We like to mix it up a little bit so the customer has a new experience each time they visit the market,“ she said.

“But we also have some regular traders where customers will place orders with them and then collect them at the next market.“ The next Berwick market will be held at Old Cheese Factory on Saturday 28 May.

Relaunch inspires women

By Eleanor Wilson Striving to help women explore their identities, Casey local Kylie Arndt is reinvigorating Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House’s (BPNH) Women’s group.

The women’s group, which allows women of all ages and life experiences to gather and chat about issues big and small, was relaunched on Thursday 28 April, with Ms Arndt facilitating the group.

“It’s just about trying to feel grounded again in life. Often when we have children, we lose our own identities,” she said.

“The group is really about reconnecting with women in an environment without any judgement, and one that isn’t connected to any other parts of our lives.”

After the previous facilitator moved to another area, Kylie hoped her involvement in the group could help local women who felt isolated and disconnected.

A soft launch of the group was held a few weeks ago, with local women ranging from new mums up to a woman in her 70s attending.

“We had no real agenda and we touched on some really intimate subjects, so it was nice to be able to provide a space for women to speak about things they mightn’t want to talk about with their husbands, or with mums from playgroups or school,” Ms Arndt said.

She said she would have benefited from a group such as the BNPH Women’s group as a new mother.

“I was a mature mum and I had my two girls quite close together, so when you see other people and you think they have it all together and you’re barely holding it together is quite difficult,” she said.

“Even when we would go to playgroup, you felt the need to pretend everything was

Ms Arndt has organised a range of inspirational speakers to attend the groups and provide some inspiration and wisdom.

“We have a life coach booked in to speak about finding joy, a psychologist, a naturopath to chat about proactive healthcare for women, a multidisciplinary deaf artist to talk about overcoming adversity,” she said.

The BNPH Women’s Group is held on Thursdays from 10am in the studio at Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House in Berwick.

It will initially be held every fortnight, with space to increase the frequency of meetings if there is demand for it.

Local business owner Kylie Arndt is excited about facilitating the group.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

Officer gets AVID grant upgrade costs for our Officer Public Hall kitchen which is now more than 100 years old and used by many members in our community “Restoration of community heritage assets is a big part of what we do, which is why we are striving to preserve the Beaconsfield Reservoir and its 103-year-old dam wall and save and restore Officer’s 100-year-old brick and pipe kiln.

“We believe this is important work that will benefit current and future generations and enhance understanding of our local history amongst residents and visitors.

“We also run Anzac and Remembrance Day services, engage closely with the council and are involved in local improvement projects for tree planting, town footpaths and car parking.”

Hillstowe welcomed Officer Senior Football Club and Officer Kangaroos Junior Football Club to its Sponsorship and Grants program in 2021, and funding recently helped with the purchase of an electronic score board.

Three other AVID communities in Victoria – Bloomdale, Savana and Carolina– also offered an annual Sponsorship and Grants Program for 2022. The grants represented an investment of more than $60,000 by AVID into the Melbourne economy.

Hillstowe by AVID Property Group (AVID) has announced the recipient of its 2022 Sponsorship and Grants Program, providing Officer Community Association with a $5,000 funding boost.

The new funding furthers Hillstowe’s local community support, which also includes a partnership with the Officer Senior Football Club and sponsorship of the Officer Kangaroos Junior Football Club.

AVID Victoria General Manager Peter Vlitas said it was the second time Hillstowe by AVID Property Group had offered the grants program and it was pleasing to give the winning applicants welcomed news to start 2022.

“Hillstowe by AVID Property Group is expected to welcome 600 residents, and we are so pleased to be part of the Officer community,” Mr Vlitas said.

“Our annual sponsorship and grants program is a way of giving back to the community we are so proud to be a part of and a great opportunity to introduce our new Hillstowe residents to the wider Officer community.

“This year in particular, the grants provide a welcomed financial boost to the community following a tough time due to the pandemic.”

On behalf of the Officer Community Association chairman Rob Porter said funds would go towards renovating and restoring the Officer Public Hall.

“As a not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation, AVID’s funding will go a long way in helping us to protect the local area’s rich history, traditions and community assets,” Mr Porter said.

More than United by name

By David Nagel Pakenham United coach Liam McCafferty is not hitting the panic button just yet despite his team’s disappointing 1-0 loss to Aspendale at IYU Reserve on Saturday.

United was the talk of the league after round one, with a 5-0 victory over Rosebud, and was exciting again in a 2-2 draw against a high-quality White Star Dandenong outfit in round two.

But after that extraordinary seven-goal start to the season, United has since scored just one goal in four matches, with a seventh-minute goal to Sash Saric in round four against Endeavour Hills their only return for effort.

After securing four points in those opening two games, United has only managed to muster one point from its last four.

But McCafferty insists there are some legitimate reasons for the dry spell.

“It’s going to be a theme throughout the season, and we’re just having our moment right now, but we’ve had Covid-related absences, injuries, suspensions, and since the second round we have not been able to field half of our team from the week before,” McCafferty explained.

“It’s not just the inconsistency that brings on game day, but it rolls into training and significantly impacts our preparation.

“Thursday night is really important for us, because that’s when we set up how we want to play on a Saturday and test our structures.

“We’ve only been able to do that once over the last month, and that resulted in a best-ofthe-season performance against Mentone, who are top of the league and scoring multiple goals all season.”

Despite the impact to its playing list, United took the game up to the ladder leaders in round five and were desperately unlucky to walk away with a 1-0 defeat.

“We had two goals disallowed and they (Mentone) snuck one, we really dominated the game and that was echoed by their coach, their staff and their players after the game,” McCafferty said.

“They thought we were by far the best and most organised team that they’ve played all season.

“But the high of that performance makes the lows a lot more disappointing and frustrating.

“We’re under-achieving at the moment, but the reasons are the inconsistency with numbers, on the training pitch and on game day.

“We’ve got suspensions, illnesses and injuries coming back this week so I’m hoping we can turn things round.

“But it’s still frustrating that we can go from such a good performance one week to such a poor performance the next.”

Starting 11 players like Simon Zappia, Daniel Vigilanti, Albert Mambo, Patrick Flomo and star-signing Sash Saric were all missing from the game against the Stingrays on the weekend.

Their staggered return, over the next few weeks, will add significantly to United’s cause.

“Anyone who has seen our style of play and identity that we’ve tried to implement, there isn’t one of those people who doesn’t believe we can go out and mix it with any team in the league,” McCafferty said.

“We’ve demonstrated that with good per-

formances against White Star and Mentone, two of the better teams in the league, we just need a healthy list to get us back on track and to make us more consistent.

“The style of play is a possession-style, based on control, not only of the ball but also positional dominance, where we will always have a numerical superiority in all areas of the field.”

While players have been in and out of the team this season, McCafferty believes there is one player in particular who is holding the team together.

“We’ve brought in a lot of players this year, but I had a chat to Simon Robertson, who has been at the club for the same length of time as me, one of the older players,” he said.

“I always knew how to improve him, it was never tactically, and it was physcological with him.

“He used to make a mistake and never got over it, and made more mistakes and more mistakes as a consequence.

“He’s now been our most consistent player,

a nine out of 10 every game, the guy at the back, the stalwart, who has been absolutely incredible.”

McCafferty, a professionally licenced coach through the Asian Federation and Football Australia, has also just embarked on an exciting development program aimed at improving the quality of junior footballers throughout the Cardinia Shire.

The LM7 Football Academy was launched at IYU Reserve on Monday night and McCafferty is excited to bring his elite development skills to juniors around our region.

“Anyone who knows me knows I live and breathe football,” McCafferty said.

“In partnership with Pakenham I’ve set up my own technical development academy to enhance the level of grassroots football in the region.

“The program is aimed at players from under-7s through to under 11s and we have boys groups, mixed groups and girls groups as well.

“With my background in the game, and with the talent in the region, I think we can really make a difference and prepare the players for the next steps they take in their careers.

“And we’re certainly not trying to take players away from other clubs.

“The academy will run alongside their own local programs.”

Warriors down in overtime

Despite 31 points from Canadian-import Joe Davis, the Pakenham Warriors went down to Mornington in overtime, 84-92, on Sunday afternoon.

It was a close contest all day at Cardinia Life, with the margin a point at quarter time and several lead changes throughout.

Pakenham went into three-quarter-time down by three points, but led by five multiple times in the last stanza, yet were never able to finish Mornington off.

After Mornington had held the lead for the last three minutes of the contest, Davis made a three-point jump shot with two seconds left on the clock to send the game into overtime but from there Mornington wrested the momentum, winning overtime 16-8.

Other contributors for Pakenham were Alistair Parker (16 points) and Trent Lee (11 points).

The Warriors’ men are currently on top of the ladder with a 5-2 record and will take on the Surf Coast on Sunday at 2pm.

Pakenham’s youth league men’s side won both their weekend games, beating Sunbury by two points on Saturday, backing that up with a 33-point win on the road against Maccabi.

The Warriors lost three of their four quarters against Sunbury but a 21-14 second quarter was enough to see them over the line.

They started slowly against Maccabi the following day, going into the first break ten points down before a 60-24 second-half blitz

blew the margin out considerably.

Michael Johns scored 46 points across the weekend and Jared Small contributed with 31.

The youth men are one of two undefeated team after five rounds, sitting atop the ladder and will next take on Bellarine on the road on Sunday at 2pm.

Pakenham’s Championship Women’s team had a great rod victory over Chelsea on Saturday night.

The Warriors won all four quarters, but blew the game apart in the second quarter with 30-21 onslaught.

Haille Nickerson led the scoring for the warriors with 22 points and was ably supported by Rhiannon Gallagher (16 points) and Deanna Joliffe (12 points).

Tarryn Wilkin also crashed the boards, pulling in 13 rebounds, including 12 at the defensive end of the court.

And Pakenham’s Youth League One Women’s team suffered a double-overtime loss to Camberwell at Cardinia Life on Saturday.

Alahna Arnason (19 points, 11 rebounds) was the pick of the Warriors girls, with a double-double, while Louise Karajic (15 points), Tyla Scorah (16 points) and Cate Zemunik (13) also contributed to the close loss.

Next weekend the women, currently third on the ladder with four wins and two losses, will take on Wyndham at 6.30pm on Saturday night at Eagle Stadium and the youth women will take on McKinnon at Cardinia Life on Saturday 1 May at noon. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Lions on rollercoaster ride

By David Nagel Pakenham’s roller-coaster start to the 2022 Outer East Senior Women’s competition has continued after the Lions ground out a 17-point victory over Monbulk on Saturday night.

The Lions began their season in great fashion, with a 45-point win over Yarra Junction, but were brought back down to earth with a heavy 75-point defeat at the hands of premiership favourites Upwey Tecoma in round two.

But it was clear early that there would be no one-sided contest this time around with two evenly-matched teams playing some exciting football in the first term.

The Lions hit the scoreboard first, with vicecaptain Courtney Stephens kicking truly after just two minutes of play before the Hawks hit back hard.

Maddison Dodd would kick the first of her two goals for the night, before Kayla Menere put the Lions back on top with a calm finish from a very tight angle.

Yanessa Hancock-Wolfe and Simone Beattie were playing great games for the Hawks, while Abbey Tognazzini and skipper Chloe Nagel were leading from the front for the Lions.

Tognazzini and Nagel switched in the ruck but were equally effective either there or at centre-half-back.

The second quarter was a real arm-wrestle, with neither team kicking a goal, before the third quarter opened up again.

Impressive first-gamer Tayla Sbisa kicked the Lions out to a two-goal lead, before Dodd refused to buckle and answered once again.

Another first-gamer for the Lions, Cahli Parket, then kicked the 100th goal of her career to give the visitors an 11-point lead at the final break.

The last quarter was once again tight and physical with both teams laying some great tackles in the final stanza. Chelsea English sealed the Lions win with the last kick of the night to see her team home, 5.2(32) to 2.3(15).

Tognazzini was outstanding down back for the Lions in the second half, while Nagel racked up a stack of possessions through the

In other games, Emily Spicer kicked four goals to lead Yarra Junction to is first win of the season over Thornton Eildon, 8.7(55) to 3.5(23), while Healesville remained undefeated with a 45-point victory over Belgrave.

Ishka-Belle Stock kicked three for the Bloods, and Emily Hay two, while Kelly Laidlaw and Kate Methven were terrific around

the ground. Amy Anderson and Tayla Marshall slotted one each for Belgrave.

And on Anzac Day, Olinda Ferny Creek proved it will be one of the teams to beat this season after a 10-point victory – 5.5(35) to 3.7(25) – over Upwey Tecoma.

Phoebe Dixon booted two for the winners while Lily Carlin and Madi Collins were also instrumental in the win.

Yarra Glen forfeited its match against Seville.

In Eastern Division One, Beaconsfield has kicked off life in a new competition with an eight-point loss to Park Orchards.

Georgia Malkoun was outstanding for the Eagles, booting all three goals in the 4.8(32) to 3.6(24) defeat.

ROC inflict some heartache Pakenham square ledger

Premier Division A-Grade One of the most recognised weeks on the calendar, ANZAC round was upon us in a thriller round two of Outer East netball.

Traditional rivals ROC and Pakenham locked horns to play out a thriller at the Officer Recreation Reserve.

ROC’s Isabella O’Shanassy and Sidney Kneebone combined to give their side a fourgoal quarter-time advantage.

Pakenham had a 15-goal second quarter thanks to Hayley Poulton, who got her side back in the contest to lead at the main break.

Pakenham continued to hold sway at the final change with Chloe Morgan chiming in to give her side a one-point lead.

The Kangaroos’ goal-keeper Katherine Grigoriou put in a stellar effort in defence to limit the Lions attacking prowess.

ROC bridged the gap and came out on top by a solitary goal.

Narre Warren continued its winning streak to ward of a gallant Monbulk outfit.

The Magpies led at every change to run out 29-goal victors.

And Beaconsfield got its season off a running with a gutsy six-goal win over Mt Evelyn.

Regan Brokenshire and Zara Treweek combing with 17-goals each to see the Eagles notch up their first win of the season.

Division One A-Grade The Battle of Berwick headlined a momentous ANZAC round.

Berwick Springs took on a red-hot Berwick at Edwin Flack Reserve.

The Titan’s had it all to do early after a 13-2 opening quarter saw their day go from bad to worse.

It’s been far from a dream start for the Roos in its maiden AFL Outer East Premier Division campaign, suffering two losses from its opening two outings.

On Saturday, the Roos hosted Pakenham – a side that has had a three week layoff since its opening round defeat to Narre Warren on 2 April.

Ash Green’s men had all the ascendancy in the opening half, but were unable to ice the game in front of goal, taking a 6.12 score line into the main break.

The yips continued in the third term for the Lions, as they added a further 2.6.

The wayward kicking in front of goal threatened to cost Pakenham the game in the final stanza, when the Officer outfit stormed home.

The Roos weren’t dead-eyes in the fourth term themselves, but by holding the Lions to 1.1, Officer mounted a neat comeback.

The home side came home with a wet sail, but a two goal first half ultimately left the young Roos with too much ground to cover.

The 9.11 (65) to 9.19 (73) defeat leaves the Roos 0-2 heading into the bye, with a crucial pair of games against Woori Yallock and the improved Wandin side to follow.

For Pakenham, the early wins are as important as any, with a heavier home game schedule to come.
