Pakenham Op Shop Inc. secretary Bev Burley is reminding people not to dump donations.

Dumping dismay couldn’t believe it. “If it’s too big for our donation bins people just dump them when we’re not here and we can’t be here 24 hours a day.” The op shop has received an influx of donations with more and more people working from home during the coronavirus pandemic. Bev said the donations haven’t stopped coming as people have extra time at home to sort through their items. 12547091-JC17-22

Pakenham Op Shop volunteers are reminding locals not to dump donations after receiving an abundance of products outside of the stores opening hours. The shop has a rotating team of 27 volunteers who sort through the donations as a way to give back to their community. Pakenham Op Shop Inc. secretary Bev Burley said she was disappointed by local atti-

tudes when it comes to giving pre-loved goods a new life. “We get a lot of rubbish dumped from people who don’t want to do a hard rubbish collection,” she said. “We have our big bin which Suez takes away weekly which costs $160 each time and we only sell our stuff for about $2, so it is a challenge. “We got in the other day with 200 to 300 books dumped at our back entrance - I

“It started up more when Covid-19 began and it really hasn’t ceased,” Bev said. “A lot of people are also downsizing or moving north from Melbourne because they don’t want to live here anymore.” Bev said the shop depends on donations when done the right way. “It would be lovely if people come in and asked if the donations can be accepted,” she said.
