Lest we forget

By Tyler Wright Thousands of members in the Monbulk community and surrounding suburbs gathered yesterday to commemorate Anzac Day on the town’s main street.

Families, RSL members and local groups marched and joined together to remember the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps who fought alongside each other on the sand of Gallipoli in World War I, and veterans who have served Australia in countries such as East Timor and Iraq ever since.

For the first time, Mount Evelyn, Lilydale and Monbulk service leagues collaborated to raise funds for a Year 11 Yarra Ranges student to travel the Kakoda Trail in Papua New Guinea and immerse themselves in the experiences of Australia’s armed forces.

A trip the RSL’s have attempted to complete since 2020, but has been pushed back due to Covid-19 border closures.

The recipient, Cameron Lilagan from Cire Community School in Mt Evelyn, said she applied for the scholarship as an opportunity to ground herself and get a broader perspective of the world around her, and was “gobsmacked” when she learned she received the award.

“I really wanted to prove to myself that I could put myself in any environment and still overcome and succeed and learn and make myself a better person from it,” she said.

The Cowey–Selman Kokoda Award, named after two Yarra Ranges war veterans Jim Cowey and Geoff Selman, will allow Cameron to walk the Kakoda Trail and witness it’s historical sights this year, made possible local plant sales supported by local nurseries and organisations such as the Lilydale Marketplace and Passchendaele Cafe.

“We’re of firm belief that our Australian history and military history should be taught in schools, right from grade one through - you start small and [more] as they get older and older.

“So by doing this award, students go and research it. They write a 600 word essay on the

Kokoda and it’s judged by an external military panel.”

The Monbulk RSL also introduced a mural for the club’s patron, Mrs Jeannie Gunn, who virtually adopted all the men who enlisted to serve in the war from the Monbulk District, alongside settlers and school children during the First World War. “She was a very big advocate for veterans

welfare,” Mr Ford said.

“She even had the Prime Minister of Australia, Billy Hughes, in Monbulk to meet the veterans…that’s the pull she had.”

In memory of the woman who “wouldn’t take no for an answer” now sits her OBE medal and a library she constructed for World War One veterans.

“She was trying to help a veteran, and she tried to get an Atlas in Monbulk to look at where he’d been and couldn’t source an Atlas in the town of Monbulk. And she thought that was disgraceful, no Atlas’ even in the school,” Mr Ford said.

So she set a mission then to get books and atlas’ and she set up a huge library.”

The club president said Jeannie laid the foundation for the RSL to be built in 1950 and she will soon be permanently remembered at the club.

“We’re eventually going to do three 2.4 by 2.4 panels, three of them in murals along our side wall at the RSL car park so everyone that comes into the car park will see them.”

Wreaths were laid down by Monbulk CFA, Monbulk Rotary, Monbulk Primary School and Kallista Scouts at the Monbulk RSL’s morning service, while the morning tea served in the club hall was hosted by the Monbulk Country Women’s Association.

Both the New Zealand and Australian national anthems were played to signify the unity between countries, and thanks were given to the horn player who gave a rendition of the Last Post.

Attendees were invited to place poppies alongside the wreaths.

Bill Ford commemorated the day from 4:00am in the morning until 8:00pm at night, with both dawn and morning services as well as gatherings running the whole day.

RSL clubs welcome funds

By Parker McKenzie In an early surprise in the lead-up to Anzac Day, RSL clubs throughout the Dandenong Ranges have received funding for projects from the Victorian State Government.

Emerald RSL has received $50,000 to upgrade the car park around their clubrooms, Upwey-Belgrave RSL has received $50,000 to repurpose an existing storage area to use for social activities training and support services, and Dandenong Ranges RSL has received $12,912 to install technology for sound reduction at their facilities.

Upwey-Belgrave RSL president Anthony Stewart said the funding was initial plans were devised 12 years ago.

“Due to not having the upfront funds to do it and looking at other things that we were trying to achieve, it sort of got put on the backburner,” he said.

“We applied for the grant with the Minister and when it came through, I’ve been telling everyone else since January it’s going to happen, just wait.”

The RSL will turn their storage room into a games room for members and the community, in a move Mr Stewart hopes will help the club attract younger veterans.

“At 53, I am one of the younger presidents. but I’m also a realist and we have to pass this onto to someone else,” he said.

“If the younger guys aren’t coming in, we need to change that. We need to create something that will bring them in.”

The projects are a part of the 50 chosen to share $1.1 million through three grant programs for veterans from the State Government.

Mr Stewart said the money has been used for display cases featuring uniforms of soldiers from recent wars Australia has participated in.

“What we’ve done is to feature younger veterans’ uniforms, more current updated stuff from after World War One and World War Two to attract the veterans,” he said.

“A lot of younger veterans would bring their children and their families in and say this is what I used to wear and things like that.

It’s really a positive moving in the right direction.”

At 3.38pm on Sunday 24 April, crews from Monbulk and Silvan responded to an accident on Monbulk Road, Monbulk.

A single-vehicle had left the road and hit a tree, with two occupants requiring the crews to remove the side and roof of the vehicle to rescue them.

The two occupants were then loaded onto stretchers before being taken to the hospital via helicopters at Silvan Oval.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria also attended the scene of the accident.

Country Fire Association (CFA) members have raised over $1.4 million in total through fundraising efforts for the Good Friday Appeal.

After two years of heavy reliance on online fundraising, CFA Volunteers from across the entire state hit the streets in their local communities, rattling tins and collecting money.

The overall tally for the Good Friday Appeal in 2022 was a record-breaking $22,328,154, with brigades that set up a Virtual Tin Shake also raising a total of $38,122.

CFA has been a fundraiser for the Good Friday Appeal for the past 71 years and to date, members have raised more than $36 million since 1951.

This year saw a significant return of volunteers collecting in-person at traffic lights and by door-knocking homes and businesses across their communities.

Cardinia Council budget open for comment

Community storm story telling event The Hills Creative Alliance has joined forces with Olinda Community House to hold a weekly storytelling event as part of the Dandenong Ranges’ June 2021 storm recovery.

Liz Millman, Secretary of the Hills Creative Alliance, lost her Sassafras home in the disaster, and has been inspired to learn more about the weather event and people’s stories ever since.

“I wanted to find an opportunity to meet with other people. And also to understand just what happened in the time of the storm, and find out about what services did to help and support us - and other organizations,” Liz said.

The people who join the weekly Friday morning event will have the chance to chat to other community members, but won’t be pressured to share their stories in a public forum.

She plans to invite CFA members and weather experts to help the community understand the disaster itself and how to move forward.

The Victorian State Government has announced an end to most Covid-19 restrictions from 11.59pm Friday 22 April, but one local business owner has said the changes are “too little, too late.”

Venues won’t be required to check vaccination status, masks will no longer be required in primary school and early childhood learning centres, hospitality and retail spaces, events with over 30,000 people will no longer require public health pre-approval and close contacts will no longer be required to quarantine provided they wear a mask indoors and avoid sensitive settings like hospitals.

Check-ins and Covid marshals will no longer be required, international travellers who are symptom-free won’t be required to get a PCR test or RAT upon arrival and people who have caught Covid-19 will be exempt from testing or quarantine for 12 weeks.

Minister for Health Martin Foley said now is the right time to set aside the vaccinated economy and focus on the highest risk settings.

“This sensible easing of restrictions is only possible because we are one of the most vaccinated societies in the world, with almost 70 per cent of Victorian adults already armed with

Masks are still required on public transport and at airports and in certain health, aged care and justice settings. All workplaces are still required to have a CovidSAFE plan.

The State Government recommends people who are a close contact with a positive Covid-19 case work from home if able and masks are recommended when you can’t physically distance.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a 37-year-old Healesville woman following a collision on the Melba Highway on 6 February, resulting in the death of a Belgrave woman.

It is alleged two cars collided on the highway at Murrindindi around 5pm that Sunday afternoon.

A 56-year-old woman from Belgrave South died at the scene while the other driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The 37-year-old woman has been charged with culpable driving and was remanded at court on Tuesday 19 April until 12 July 2022.

National poll shows drop

By Parker McKenzie Two weeks into a six-week campaign before Casey residents vote on May 21, national support for the major parties has slumped to a five-year low according to pre-election polling.

In the April 18 Newspoll, the Labor and Liberal Party were at their lowest combined firstparty preference in over five years, while minor parties, independents and undecided voters claimed a huge chunk of the electoral pie.

Newspoll, administered by market research and data analytics group YouGov and published in The Australian, showed nationally Labor’s first preference vote has fallen to 36 per cent and the Liberal’s to 35 per cent. The Greens, One Nation, Independents and other minor parties carved out 25 per cent of the vote.

The drop in support makes the likelihood of a hung Parliament or minority government more likely, where the major parties rely on the support of independents or minor parties to govern.

Liberal candidate for Casey Aaron Violi said the results were for a national poll and are “a snapshot in time.”

“My focus is on talking to businesses and residents and making sure we’re delivering for them,” he said.

“I’ve been getting great support and I’ve been hearing really strong feedback from the community about having a third-generation local representing them.

“That’s where the focus has to be for me as a candidate, so it’s probably not my place to commentate on a Newspoll.”

Labor candidate for Casey Bill Brindle said the results didn’t surprise him because people “have had government all over them for a couple of years.”

“People want to see the parliament working, they want to see laws being passed and they want to see things being done. Because I’ve been in business for so long, I get frustrated when I see nothing happening for an awful lot of work.”

Mr Brindle pointed to Covid-19, the possibility of the “big four banks moving on interest

rates,” and anger towards politicians as contributing to low first preference support for the two major parties.

“The general public wants to see something produced at the end of the day, they’re sick of the noise.” he said.

The Australian public last saw a hung Parliament in the 2010 federal election — the first in 70 years — when the Labor Party formed government with the support of one Greens

MP and three Independents. In the 1940 federal election, neither the Labor nor the Coalition of the United Australia Party and the Country Party was able to govern in the majority after each claimed 36 seats in the House of Representatives. Two Independent MPs supported the Coalition to form a Robert Menzies-led government; however, their support only lasted until late 1941.

Independent candidate for Casey Claire Ferres Miles said despite some people claiming a hung Parliament would be chaos, she believes it would bring a sense of balance to the Australian Government.

“A two-party government is almost the exception now in Australia, whereas in Germany, Belgium and in lots of countries that have had coalition governments for decades, they’re incredibly effective.”

Ms Ferres Miles said “people are tired of the negative, old style of party politics” and the results of recent polling show a loss of faith in the major parties.

“They want a vision, and they want some positivity about the future of the country and where we’re going, they want to hear more than the other guy is hopeless,” she said.

“I’ve heard from almost everyone I’ve spoken to is the desire for a federal integrity commission. People are sick of the corruption, the rorts and the misuse of public money.

“People say to me if I behaved like MPs in Parliament, I’d be sacked in my workplace.”

Mr Brindle supported the call for a federal anti-corruption commission as a way to regain the public’s faith in politics.

“I don’t care how much power it’s got. If you do your job and you stay within the rules that you’re meant to stay within, you’ve got nothing to worry about,” he said.

“You’ve got to hold people to account and if you’re you’ve taken up the post as a Member of Parliament, then you are accountable. If you can’t do it, you shouldn’t be there.”

Liberal Democrats put Trevor Smith up for Casey seat

By Parker McKenzie The Liberal Democrats have nominated Trevor Smith as their candidate for the 2022 federal election on 21 May. Speaking to the Star Mail, Mr Smith said he believes the biggest issue for voters at the election will be “small government.”

“People, they really want to see the government out of their private lives, and also out of the way of business,” he said.

“There’s way too much red tape and too many obstacles for everybody everywhere you turn now.”

The libertarian party announced their “Freedom Manifesto” for the 2022 election, which includes their policies of the removal of Covid-19 related mask and vaccine mandates, the introduction of recall elections into Australian politics, voluntary superannuation

and allowing schools to opt-out of the national curriculum.

Mr Smith said the Liberal Democrats have been around for 20 years and haven’t changed, making them a “party of principle.”

“In Casey, one of the things that we’re very keen on is lower electricity prices. We’re basically looking at deregulation in that market,” he said. “There’s a lot of government influence in the electricity market at the moment.

This is why the prices are so high, so what we want to do is get the government out of the way, let the market decide.”

Mr Smith pointed to removing the ban on nuclear energy as a way to decrease electricity costs and remove government red tape.

“I very much believe in Ronald Reagan’s famous quote, that the government isn’t the solution, the government’s part of the problem,” he said.

“One of our policies is if you bring in new rules, you need to take two away. This way, we think we can remove some of the regulation and bureaucracy that’s really making life so much harder for the average person.”

Another policy spruiked by the Liberal Democrats is the simplification of tax brackets, with a tax-free threshold up to $40,000 and a flat 20 per cent tax rate on earnings.

Mr Smith said his connection to the Casey electorate began with his mother-in-law, who lived in Tecoma.

“She lived there for many years and we used to go and visit them. Her love of the place really passed on to me and the rest of my family,” he said.

“What a beautiful area it was, you know the whole Dandenong Ranges and further out as well.”

Mobile towers pledged

By Parker McKenzie Election promises of funding continue to fly in from the two major parties, with the Liberal Federal government committing to upgrading Belgrave Recreation Reserve and building mobile connectivity towers if reelected.

Casey Liberal candidate Aaron Violi announced the funding pledge on Thursday 21 April, committing to building two mobile connectivity towers in Menzies Creek and Silvan if the Liberal party wins the May 21 election.

The projects are two of 66 announced for funding to address mobile black spots as a part of the Peri Urban Mobile Program, a pilot program announced in the 2021-22 budget. The proposed locations of the base stations are in Silvan and Menzies Creek.

Mr Violi said he is pleased to announce the new mobile sites to improve coverage for the local community.

“Having lived here my whole life and having spoken with many residents since my endorsement as the Liberal candidate last year, I understand the communications challenges we have in Casey, which is why today’s announcement is such great news for our local communities.,” he said.

“If elected in May, I will continue to advocate strongly to improve mobile coverage and address black spots across the electorate.” $28.2 million in funding has been promised for the 66 projects in 28 electorates around Australia. The cost of the individual projects ranges from $624,000 to $1.46 million.

Minister for Communications Paul Fletcher said the Federal Government is committed to improving mobile connectivity for people living in outer urban areas.

“Improving coverage on the urban fringe will help communities access vital information during emergencies, seek help if needed and stay in touched with loved ones.” he said.

Blackspots and poor mobile coverage have been an issue for residents in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley, and it was flagged as a key problem during the 2009 Victorian Royal Commission into bushfires.

In late 2021 Yarra Ranges Council introduced 10 trial sites for fixed installations of NBN disaster satellite services throughout the Valley and Dandenong Ranges, including in Monbulk, Olinda and The Patch.

program. The service can be activated during and after an emergency to provide internet access for affected communities.

Connecting Victoria, a $550 million State Government project, is also aiming to fasttrack business-grade broadband and upgrade mobile coverage throughout the region.

Mr Violi also announced a promise of $3.8 million in funding for Belgrave Recreational Reserve on the same day.

by Mr Violi at an event held at the ground on Thursday 21 April and will be used for a new pavilion and cricket nets at the reserve located at 1A Reserve Rd, Belgrave.

Mr Violi said the funding would provide a permanent home for Belgrave sports and community groups.

“It’s great to see the hard work of the local community paying off with this investment in the future of Belgrave,” he said.

“I’m proud to be a part of the Liberal team delivering for the East. If elected in May, I’ll continue to give my all for our communities.”

24 local teams — including 10 women’s teams — will use the facilities once completed.

Belgrave Football Netball Club committee member Mel Davey said the project “will be a game-changer for our local sporting clubs and the local community.”

“It’s great that Aaron has listened to what we need and delivered this commitment for Belgrave.” she said.

Farewell to Ms Coulson

By Parker McKenzie Historian Helen Coulson, best known in the hills for her book Story of the Dandenongs, passed away at the age of 103 on Good Friday, 15 April.

The Echuca Historical Society, which Ms Coulson helped found, announced her passing on Facebook on April 17.

“Her contribution to the heritage of Echuca and the history of Victoria is unsurpassed and valued by all,” the Society said.

“Her contribution and dedication to EHS has been outstanding over many years and will be greatly missed.”

Ms Coulson wrote Story of the Dandenongs in 1959, chronicling the history of the area and the early pioneer life into the post-war era from 1838 to 1958.

Prior to her 100th birthday in 2018, Ms

Coulson spoke to the Star Mail about the longevity of her history book.

“I’m quite pleased to hear that it’s still being used as a reference book,” she said.

“I suppose there have been other books since then, but the fact that it would’ve been the first to encompass that area makes it special.”

After growing up in Upwey in the 1920s and 1930s, Ms Coulson moved to Horsham in 1948, where published her first history book.

The now-defunct Dandenong Ranges Council commissioned the Story of the Dandenongs. It has since been reprinted several times and remains one of the definitive resources for those interested in the history of the hills.

Tributes for Ms Coulson from members of the Dandenong Ranges community have revealed the impact her work made on those interested in the history of the hills.

Monbulk Historical Society president Ar-

min Richter said “the book is the most important historical book that has been written about the Dandenongs.”

“The book was very well researched and compiled. The added advantage was that it had been researched and written between 1952 and 1958, at a time when some of the district pioneers were still around to be able to give personal first-hand recollections dating back to as early as the 1870s and 1880s,” he said.

“Many historical accounts that appeared in Helen’s book were not known or recorded anywhere else. As a result, it is also a widely quoted publication.”

Vice President of the Save the Dandenong Leagues Carolyn Ebdon said Story of the Dandenongs is the first reference if there is a historical fact to be checked. “ I first got a copy of her book in the 1980s.

I know that when I was it that, I suddenly realised how wonderful the Dandenongs are again,” she said.

“You’ve really fallen in love with it all over again, that’s what led me to seek out and join the Save the Dandenongs League. I attribute my joining the League really to Helen Coulson’s book and I’m sure others felt the same.”

Ms Ebdon said she had the opportunity to meet Ms Coulson in Echuca for her 100th birthday in 2018.

“I was really pleased to meet her and I shook her hand and thanked her personally,” she said.

“I remember that it discussed that we should try to organise or that perhaps the council should be trying to organise a reprint and then it was forgotten about, unfortunately.

I don’t think anything’s happened since, but I’m sure it would be just as popular.”

After trialling book donations at Officeworks stores around Victoria — including Ferntree Gully — charity 123Read2Me has shipped their first pallets of children’s books to floodaffected communities.

123Read2Me founder Melinda Shelley said the amount of books donated has exceeded both her own and Officeworks’ expectations.

“In the three weeks, we’ve had 7,700 books donated through the Officeworks stores,” she said.

“It’s very exciting to have this happen and now puts a bit of pressure on us to find a permanent warehouse.”

The charity supplies second-hand books to underprivileged children around Australia, with its current donation drive focusing on those affected by the floods in Lismore.

Camerons Transport, a local business that has donated their time and expertise to the charity, will freight the books to Lismore.

Ms Shelley said finding a permanent home for the charity remains their biggest priority.

“Officeworks is talking about looking at doing some fundraising for us, we’ve got to be patient, hold and keep moving forward,” she said.

“When you are struggling to put food on

the table, children’s books are a luxury. There are a lot of books sitting in people’s cupboards because their kids have grown out of them and we want them donated to us.”

Officeworks is accepting bulk donations of books, with some people making charity drives at schools and workplaces before dropping them off at their local store. Other donation boxes are located at the Children’s House of Early Learning in Boronia and Bendigo Community Bank in Ferntree Gully.

Ms Shelley said once the current donation drive is finished and permanent warehousing space is found, the charity will look to expand the program beyond Australia.

“We’re looking into Tonga with the recent volcano and through our partnership with Lions club, we’re looking at helping rebuild some of their school libraries,” she said.

“We have a lot of requests from overseas countries in Africa, Thailand and the Philippines. At the moment, we have to say no to them just because our priorities are Australian kids.

“As we grow and get stronger and increase our reach, we can roll out across the across the globe, really it’s the same problem in every country and it’s the same solution.”

Celebrating rich history

By Tyler Wright Emerald Museum held its Australian Heritage Festival on Wednesday as part of Heritage Week in acknowledgment of the rich history in the area.

The museum is located in Nobelius Heritage Park, a site that was part of fruit and ornamental tree exporter Carl Axel Nobelius’ Nursery where some of his fruit plants grow to this day.

Displays of memorabilia, photographs and documents filled the museum, and plants listed in the Nobelius plant catalogue colour the surrounding park amidst the autumn coolness.

Typewriters from the 1800s, centuries-old coffee roasters and agricultural machinery coming from Emerald, Gembrook, Clematis and neighbouring areas form part of the collection gathered by volunteers throughout the thirty years the Museum has been operating.

“It’s a really nice place to come... to learn about the local area and hear more personal stories, which is what history’s really all about,” Emerald Museum volunteer Julia Bell said.

“Which is why when someone donates something, it’s really good if we can get some stories or some background rather than just the object - because that’s what people really want to know [about],” Ms Bell said.

Families scrambled througho`ut the museum to find items on their treasure hunt list, with children playing with typewriters while asking ‘what does it do?.’

“It’s school holidays, lot’s of kids are around,” Ms Bell said.

“It’s a really good opportunity for us to let people know that we’re here and get people to come and then a chunk of them will come back for another visit or tell other people about it.”

Cardinia Shire Council’s Environment Education Officer Annie Jenkins helped get the event running and supplied morning tea for visitors.

locked down throughout the last two years.

“It’s good to share that passion and interest in the history of the Emerald Museum and Emerald District,” Ms Jenkins said.

“I’d be really, really excited to do more events like this and really get more people in and enjoy it.”

Emerald local Beryl was a volunteer for the Nobelius Heritage Park & Emerald Museum Committee of Management for almost thirty years.

While she has recently given up the role, you could still find her imparting her knowledge on those walking through the Festival.

Committee of Management President Pauline Murphy said the Festival was “very successful” and the Committee is looking for new volunteers to spearhead the way forward - a sentiment echoed by other members, too.

“We haven’t got a huge amount of volunteers,” Ms Murphy said.

“It’s a bit of a struggle because it means the ones that are left have to do everything.”

Nobelius Heritage Park is registered on the Victorian Heritage Database as a site of State significance, and the Emerald Museum is located at Emerald Museum, 5 Crichton Rd, Emerald VIC 3782.

Beryl said a worker at Nobelius Nursery, Gus Ryberg, brought former Victorian Premier Rupert Hamer to the property which led to funding from local council and the Victorian Government to keep the nursery running and eventually build the museum that currently stands.

She said she loved seeing young children exploring the museum and the park and asking questions about what they saw.

The Victorian Salvia Study Group had a Salvia Display Garden behind the museum with a stall selling the plants which are very popular with locals.

Teachers head to tropics

By Tyler Wright Two Dandenong Ranges swim teachers have succeeded in their goal to hold swimming lessons for children on Lord Howe Island, after postponing the trip due to Covid.

In 2020, Monbulk swimming teacher Sally Pizzey first planned to head to the subtropical Island east of Port Macquarie when she discovered there was limited opportunities for locals to learn how to swim.

Finally after a two year delay, Sally was joined by fellow teacher Christine Rasmussen to conduct the program in February - receiving a warm reception from families in the area.

Sally said the ten day teaching program consisted of morning and afternoon classes for children aged from two to 12 years old.

There are no pools on Lord Howe Island, leaving the lagoon as the only place to swim and classes were open to all weather patterns.

Sally and Christine were made to improvise during their lessons with buoys anchoring surrounding boats.

“The way we stopped their boards floating away was to put our boards and noodles underneath the chain,” Sally said.

A Lord Howe Island resident first highlighted the need for a swimming program in the remote area after she placed her kids in a Dandenong Ranges swimming lessons while on holidays to Victoria.

“It’s so expensive for swim teachers to actually go and teach there,” Sally said.

“She contacted me when she got back to Lord Howe Island, and that’s how it got

up and running.

“We ran a big raffle that raised a lot of money, a couple of parents gave us cash donations, and the Kallista General Store had wine tasting wine night to raise money.”

This covered part of the trip to the world heritage listed island with a capped number of visitors and small resident population. “[The kids] were so enthusiastic about it.

“The parents [saw] it as a bit of a social thing.

“It’s quite a unique community and very welcoming.”

Christine, Menzies Creek local and swim teacher, said it was a “wonderful” experience teaching the children of Lord Howe Island. “[Children] get limited swim lessons offered throughout the year, although volunteers run

a little nippers program on Saturday mornings which is fantastic for them,” she said.

“The kids gained much water confidence and their strokes improved throughout the 10 days of the program Sally and myself offered.”

The venture went so well a return trip is already planned for this November and another is on the cards for February next year. The teachers who make the trek will differ each time, rotating between Sally, Christine, and another local swim teacher.

“This time when we go back, we’ve already got 47 kids to do it,” Sally said.

“The community of Lord Howe are thinking of things to do for fundraising,” she said as they continue to find travel funds for their future visits.

Rebuilding after the February floods is still a daily task for New South Wales and Queensland residents who were affected by the devastating natural disaster.

The traumatising and heart breaking lose of lives, livelihoods and communities is something that fuels the Need for Feed convoys as volunteers and generous donations continue to come forward.

Volunteer truck driver Scott Guy is setting off on his fourth convoy up to the flood affected regions for the charity, with a load carrying 44 bales of hay donated by four Dixons Creek farmers.

Mr Guy was brought to tears when he described the scenes he’s seen in past deliveries.

“To tell you the truth I don’t think I’ve seen devastation like it, it’s 10 times worse than the bushfires - we don’t think we’ve done anything ever like it before,” Mr Guy said.

“There are some struggling people out there, they’ve had no support and the only people that are supporting are people like us with community and volunteers.”

Mr Guy said the loss of stock and nursing injured animals is a heartbreaking element farmers are facing.

“There’s some dairy farmers out there that have lost half their herd and it’s like their children. They’re very close to their dairy cattle and they’re in trauma... there’s a lot of trauma.”

Bales of hay, wellness packs, food, supplies and more are just some of the donated items being taken by the convoys and individual deliveries, with all vehicle use and fuel generously donated as well.

A Healesville woman also donated 30 horse rugs which are being transported north as part of the Anzac Day long weekend’s convoy.

“We’re not just running hay runs like this where we’ve got 40 trucks - we’ve got individual loads going to farmers in need every week.

“There’s so much devastation up there that people are just trying to rebuild their lives and sometimes there’s no hope left, and that’s what we do when we go in there with a load of hay - it just puts a smile on their face.

“We’ve had such a great response from

One of the four anonymous Dixon Creek farmers is giving back as they know what it’s like to be tragically affected by a natural disaster after losing everything in the Black Saturday bushfires.

“I want to give back because vicarious trauma doesn’t go away, and the more you see, the more you hear, it gets so deeply into your psyche that it comes straight up,” they said.

“Because I’m such an animal person, I see the trauma of those animals and the trauma to the owners who loved them – it’s terrible.”

Another run is scheduled for Queen’s Birthday weekend 11-12 June and those interested in donations can support through the Need for Feed website.

“It’s just so important that we keep the momentum up. It’s not just today, it’s all year, it’s the next two or three years probably or longer,” the anonymous farmer said.

Traffic devastating for local wildlife

By Tyler Wright Emerald-Monbulk Wildlife Shelter has been overwhelmed by an influx of injured local wildlife as vehicles storm the Dandenong Ranges during the Easter Holiday period.

Carol Seeger runs the shelter and said the amount of wildlife hit by cars is increasing every year.

“With daylight saving animals are out on the road earlier in the dark and getting hit more often,” she said.

“And…especially because of the Easter holidays, a lot more people are on country roads, and a lot more animals are hit by cars [during] that time. I’ve had quite a lot in this short time.”

Research published in the journal Diversity and Distributions estimated 510 million birds and 1.4 billion mammals are killed by foxes and cats across Australia each year, an issue Carol is at the forefront of daily as wildlife come to ground searching for food.

During Melbourne’s Covid restrictions, Carol said local wildlife got used to not having human traffic around, but this quickly changed as restrictions eased.

“Cat’s are the main problem… and dogs, but mainly cats, and people not keeping them inside,” Carol said.

Wildlife Victoria reported 45 per cent of rescued animal cases were found ‘on ground’ or on the road, and Carol said it is important for drivers to check before they leave hit wildlife lying in the middle of the road - potentially saving them from an unnecessary death.

“A lot of times if people could just pick them up, they’re just concussed and there’s nothing much else wrong with them. But if they leave them on the road, then another car will come along and kill them,” she said.

“A lot of times it’s Tawny Frogmouths and Kookaburras especially - they seem to be a bit concussed and they just need a bit of time to rest and then they’ll be fine again.”

Carol’s work at the shelter is all-consuming - receiving calls day and night from Wildlife Victoria and those reporting injured wildlife.

“You don’t get much sleep with it,” she said.

The financial burden is also heavy, with Carol pouring her own funds into the shelter.

“The milk powder alone is $450 a bag, and I go through that every two to three weeks.”

But support from volunteers and the wider community has kept the shelter alive, with funding from Wildlife Victoria grants allowing new enclosures to house more animals and Warriors 4 Wildlife’s food donation program

Owners of electric cars will visit the IGA car park in Emerald to answer questions about their vehicles.

DRREA President Peter Cook said there will be two Teslas, three Nissan Leafs, one Volt, one Toyota Corolla and one Mitsubishi Outlander on the day and the event is an attempt to push for an electric charging station in Emerald township.

“If more and more people in the future drive up there in electric vehicles, then it would be good that they be able to recharge their vehicles while they’re having lunch or doing whatever they might be doing in Emerald,” Mr Cook said.

Mr Cook said with the increasing price of petrol and different types of electric vehicles now on the market, people may benefit from gaining insight into their advantages and disadvantages.

He also said some of the electric vehicles on display are cheaper second hand options imported from Japan.

“Second-hand electric vehicles [make] electric vehicles much more affordable than just the option of buying new.

“Which has eventuated just in the last 12 to 18 months,” he said.

The Electric Vehicle Council said 6,900 electric vehicles were sold in Australia in 2020, an increase of 182 cars from 2019.

Battery Electric Vehicles took the majority of sales, with Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles representing just under one-quarter of sales.

And as of August 2021, there were over 3,000 public chargers installed across Australia.

The DRREA’s ‘Show and Tell’ will take place from 10:00am to 12:00pm on the day.

“I’ve got so many animals - a lot of kangaroos and wombats. I’ve got wallabies, I’ve got loads of birds, possums everything,” she said.

Season begins for mushroom foragers in the Ranges

By Tyler Wright The ‘Mushrooms of the Dandenong Ranges’ Facebook group has one and a half thousand members.

You’ll find enthusiasts asking ‘can someone please id?’ alongside an image they have snapped of fungi in local greenery.

You’ll also find replies along the lines of ‘could be a native russula.’

“A possible horsehair fungus- Gymnopus androsaceus,’’ another replies.

There is a clear exchange of knowledge and learning within the group, some even call themselves ‘rookies’ in the social media comments, imparting and absorbing knowledge like a mushroom absorbs nutrients. Sibel Canver hails from Germany, has recently established a mushroom farm in Emerald and is also a member of the community group.

“I would always go mushroom foraging in the European forest.. A lot of pine forests were there,” Sibel said.

“And then when the lockdown started, I remembered that there are actually a lot of pine forests here too.

“That really sparked my interest in mushrooms again.”

Picture: SUPPLIED the first rains in Autumn to the really cold weather in August, stopping when frost puts an end to the season. But as the end of 2021’s summer has been particularly dry, mushroom farmers say foraging will not be in full swing unil this weekend.

“Hopefully we get more rain and cooler nights, and hopefully the mushies will be everywhere,” Sibel said.

has boomed since the beginning of Covid and demand has been strong for Sibel’s mushroom-based products she sells from her business ‘Mycelium Wisdom.’

Her social media posts have gained traction in the community because mushrooms are “very photogenic,” she said.

“When I do markets, I have a lot of people coming up wanting to know how to cultivate mushrooms themselves.

“With the way the world is going, it’s really important that people know how to be able to grow their own independent, organic, healthy food source to start with or know how to find it in the forest” she said.

Emerald Lake Park and Cockatoo’s Wright Forest are ample locations for locals to forage, she said, with multiple varieties of mushroom for locals to explore. But it is vital to know what you are picking, and choosing to eat after foraging.

“There’s certain Boletus - or the Saffron Milk Caps, they grow with pine trees, because they like the polysaccharides (like sugars) the trees can provide the mushrooms. And in return, the mushrooms will actually channel nutrients to the trees. So they help each other out” Gourmet mushroom grower John Ford will be holds foraging courses to focus on just that - identifying certain mushroom’s “poisonous look alikes” to avoid serious illness.

“We make sure we have the [mushrooms] there and people can hold them in their hands so they can see the differences.

“I think that having an experienced guide is a really, really important thing,” John said.

What is something people don’t know about you?

I spent a few of my younger years living in country Victoria, which formed a lot of who I am today and sparked my love of community and generally getting to know people.

I am writing about people and places in Monbulk, Emerald, Olinda, Sassafras, Cockatoo, Kallista, Kalorama, Silvan, Ferny Creek and Avonsleigh.

Give me a buzz if you want to chat because I love learning new things and meeting new people.

What has been your most memorable moment as journalist at the Star Mail? Why? I started in late March and my most memorable moments have been speaking to Dandenong Ranges locals about the sheer devastation of last year’s June storm - suffering losses and anxieties that are unfathomable but residents seem to always be coming together as a community.

What do you love most about working in the Yarra Ranges?

Being welcomed by a big hug from greenery each day I come into work. There’s absolutely nothing better! I love being able to take a walk and have the sun shining on me in my break.

And the kindness of locals has been instrumental as I start my new role and produce stories about the area - there are no news stories without people doing awesome things.

What are some of your hobbies?

I play social netball (which can be surprisingly rough for a ‘non-contact sport’) and read a

I would love to see the northern lights (or aurora borealis) in the future. To visit Iceland or another Nordic region and see this amazing halo of colour would be a dream.

Indeed, our world is and will always be unfathomable and unpredictable.

Hence the book is designed to match our times, to be consumed by “a new generation of Australian teens – who are growing up and coming of age in tis current climate of uncertain health and environment, and interrupted daily life”.

The book can challenge adult readers as well: What, exactly, unsettles us as parents?

PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN In Nwosu’s “Nature Boy”, the main character is half-horrified, half-fascinated by the notion of death. In Emma Osborne’s “Slaughterhouse Boys”, to enter adulthood is to confront meat and blood.

Other stories are subtle, illustrating the anxiety and angst of our times. For example, traditional beliefs are juxtaposed with contemporary instincts and reflexes in Jared Thomas’s “Seek and Destroy”, Lisa Fuller’s “Don’t Look!”, and Marianna Shek’s “Hunger”. In Felix Wilkins’s “Best Years of Your Life”, metamorphosis occurs when the protagonist fails to cope with life. In Margot McGovern’s “Euryhaline”, a talented athlete is crushed by her own ambition.

Especially noteworthy are two graphic

stories, with Emma Preston’s “It’s Quiet Now” depicting monsters lurking around cities and residential areas during the COVID lockdown.

Michelle O’Connell’s “Do I See It All Now?” is equally gripping, inspired by her experience of growing up being neurodivergent and undiagnosed.

In particular, this reviewer enjoys Alison Evans’s “Angel Eyes” and Holden Sheppard’s “Rappaccini’s Son”.

In “Angel Eyes”, those who are wolf within are hunted by angels, winged creatures radiating light and heat. Demanding that the wolves “repent” – or face “cleansing” – the angels punish those deemed “abnormal” and “different” by infesting them with eyes that spread over their skin..

Meanwhile, in writing “Rappaccini’s Son”, Sheppard explains: “What most horrified me growing up was the prospect of doing the wrong thing... My biggest fear as a teenager was that my core was rotten; that I was a bad boy; deviant, rude, weird, unlikeable, not good enough.” The author confronts such fear by allowing his protagonist to embrace who he really is. The resulting story is dark and rebellious, yet there is love and hope.

Hometown Haunts is suitable for readers aged 13 and above. It is a must read for teenagers and those who want to understand them.

Directed by auteur Robert Eggers, The Northman is a brutal, riveting historical epic.

In tenth-century Iceland, Amleth (Alexander Skarsgard), son of a murdered king, vows to avenge his father, save his mother Gudrun (Nicole Kidman) and kill his traitorous uncle Fjolnir (Claes Bang).

Like Hamlet, The Northman is a sobering portrait of the multiplying cruelties of vengeance.

The Scandinavian legend of Amleth was the direct inspiration for Hamlet, and The Northman is a fascinating fusion of the source legend and Shakespeare’s play.

The shrunken head of a fool provides the ‘Poor Yorick’ moment, but advances the plot by instructing Amleth to find a special sword. Olga (Anya Taylor-Joy), the film’s Ophelia, has more agency in helping Amleth to sow fear and confusion in Fjolnir’s court. The play to catch the conscience of the King is now spiked food and deliberate acts of terror. Gudrun/ Gertrude has more to say for herself, and Fjolnir is a more active and sympathetic antagonist than Claudius, as a cruel chieftain but a loving father.

The pacing is an entrancing slow-burn of scheming punctuated by shocking violence. The staggering cinematography captures breathtaking landscapes, muddy villages and rustic fire-lit halls, juxtaposed with vibrant imagery of Norse magic and ritual. Amleth undergoes a tragic, engaging arc: battle-hardened as a Viking and obsessed with vengeance, Amleth is softened by Olga’s love and questions his motives as he learns the damning truth of his family. Unlike Hamlet, which has the classic feel-bad, everyone-dies ending, The Northman is slightly more optimistic: vengeance is still vicious and self-defeating, but may be done for a noble purpose beyond pride.

The Northman will amply satisfy action, Shakespeare and Skarsgard fans and anyone looking for a visually-stunning, remarkably-crafted historical film.

Chainsaw artist to join chestnut fest

By Parker McKenzie A local chainsaw artist will demonstrate her skill when she creates a wombat sculpture live at the Kalorama Chestnut Festival on Sunday 1 May at Kalorama Memorial Reserve.

Using local chestnut tree wood, Shlomit Moria will create the sculpture to auction off to raise funds for Mt Dandenong Preschool, which was damaged in the June 2021 storm event and has yet to be fully repaired.

Ms Moria said it is a privilege to support the Chestnut Festival through her art.

“I’m so happy that there is something I can do to help. Last year during all the storms, everybody in the community was trying to help

with generators, supplies, food and clothes,” she said.

“There is also a bench with a Kookaburra I made that is ready to be auctioned on the day.”

The wood is being supplied by local non-forprofit Rescue Logs, who also organised for Ms Moria to be at the event and demonstrate her art. All profits from the auction will be donated to Mt Dandenong Preschool and Mt Dandenong Primary School, who are co-hosting event.

Ms Moria said they would use “as local as we can get” materials for the sculpture.

“We’re going to try to use timber from a local chestnut tree that was felled in the storm,” she said.

“I really hope that there’s going to be a lot

of people at the festival and they manage to organise enough funds for the school to start to rebuild.”

Rescue Logs, a major sponsor of the festival, repurpose timber and trees which fell in the June storms for community projects.

Kalorama was one of the areas worst affected by the June 2021 storm weather event and both Mt Dandenong Kindergarten and Mt Dandenong Primary School had their buildings damaged, with some repairs still ongoing.

The Chestnut Festival is volunteer-run and features a diverse range of stalls showcasing locally made handcrafts and produce, roasted chestnuts and food stalls. It has been held for over 30 years to raise funds for Mt Dandenong Preschool.

Ferntree Gully artist features on TV show

By Parker McKenzie A local artist has featured in the global TV show Colour in your Life, where she was filmed creating an abstract landscape in a Ferntree Gully art studio.

Entering into its 23rd season, the show was created by Graeme Stevenson OAM and now films in seven countries and is broadcast in 50.

Artist and teacher Olga Megele said it was brilliant to have the spotlight put on Ferntree Gully Art Society, where part of the show was filmed at their gallery and studio called The Hut. “I think you probably see on a video that I’m quite nervous. They’re asked questions about the history, so it was difficult because I wanted to get the facts correct,” she said.

“We spent time there and filmed around The Hut and then we went back to my studio and did the filming there.”

Aside from the Ferntree Gully Art Society, Ms Megele is also a member of MAVA, The Contemporary Art Society and Oak Hill Gallery and has exhibited art at locations throughout the Dandenong Ranges and Victoria.

Ms Megele said she felt most comfortable when painting and talking about her art with interviewer Sophia Stacey.

“I’m a teacher, so I’m used to demonstrating and that part I was comfortable with,” she said.

“It’s been really positive. I belong to a couple of other groups so I’ve had some lovely feedback from people.” mailcommunity.com.au

A Yarra Valley local is providing a safe space for photography lovers to share their mental health journey.

David Eastham has created Facebook group ‘Shooting the Black Dog,’ in an attempt to share techniques on easing feelings of depression and anxiety through ‘Therapeutic Photography’ after his own experiences with suffering from severe emotional stress.

“I read a fair bit about how people were using creative outlets to manage their mental health and wellbeing and [I] got into photography. “[It was] probably one of the most significant steps I’ve taken to improve my mental health and wellbeing,” David said.

Shooting an image of an eagle flying into its nest to meet its babies after months of waiting for the event was the tipping point for David to realise he could accomplish what he set his mind to.

The group was created two weeks ago and now has close to 200 members - something he did not expect.

“It’s not about the photos being perfect or anything like that..I’m very clear that it’s for people that take photos with their phones right through to professional setups.”

Having done research about the impacts of therapeutic photography on mental health, David plans to post activities and challenges onto the page to prompt participants and increase involvement.

One of the activities members have tried involves posting a photo of how they felt at that present moment, and contrast that with a photo of how they want to feel.

“Some people are posting photos that are significant because it might be the anniversary of the loss of one of their loves ones, or it might just be that they’re feeling pretty good that day so they’re putting up a nice happy photo.

“I’m surprised how natural it is for people to do it now that the platform’s there,” he said.

“People are embracing photography a lot more.”

The show, which Mr Stevenson describes as “a bit like a cooking show but for artists,” has been viewed over 100 million times through online streaming and is aired on TV networks in over 50 countries. Ms Megele’s episode was filmed in Ferntree Gully by Natascha Wernick.

Ms Megele said the experience has opened up new avenues for her.

“In the future, there’s the possibility that I could do an online tutorial,” she said.

“I’m really happy with it, I think it worked out really well.”

Expo to ‘pick your path’

By Mikayla van Loon A ‘pick your own path’ career expo is coming to Lilydale to support young jobseekers looking for work in the Yarra Ranges.

Hosted by the Outer Eastern Local Learning Employment Network (OELLEN) at Yarra Ranges Tech School on 4 May, partnership broker Brooke Young said it will provide a broad array of opportunities to give young people confidence when applying for jobs.

Running over a three hour period, stall holders will be set up to answer questions and talk about different roles within industries but Ms Young said she believes it will be the breakout rooms that really have the most impact.

“We’ve got one room that is focusing on all things apprenticeship related…Then we have a breakout room around employment seeking, so looking for a job, writing resumes, interview tips, all of that,” she said.

“The middle hour is a panel discussion, facilitated by the Skills and Jobs Centre team to talk about that initial contact with employers.”

The panel discussion will include a variety of employers, recruitment staff and young people who can answer questions around getting an employer’s attention, the best interview practices and the recruitment process. “[This is] to give people a sense of how you get past that barrier, especially a lot of young people at the moment haven’t had the opportunity to apply for a job with Covid and lockdowns and everything else.

“So it’s a big mental barrier to get through and to get that ball rolling if you haven’t had work before.”

“There’s probably a little bit of a gap between some of the old ways of writing resumes and how we used to do things to how times have moved on and actually having the opportunity to get that insight of what employers are currently looking for from you,” Ms Young said.

Having done research and heard from industries, Ms Young said these days resumes need to cater much more to the employability skills rather than technical skills, as well as needing to be presented in a way that computer programs can pick up key words.

“People think their resume looks really pretty and fancy but actually it’s confusing the computer, and they never get to the point of being looked at by human eyes.”

The response from a number of industries, particularly in the Yarra Ranges, has been that they want to attend events to meet people face to face and hire almost on the spot.

“Something different from last year’s expos, there’s a big demand at the moment from local employers with great local opportunities across a variety of industries who really want to hire young people at the moment and are having trouble getting the right people.

“So they’ve been approaching us and they’re really keen to come along and actually recruit on the night.

“It won’t be a high pressure situation where they have to actually conduct an interview in a crowd but they can make that initial contact and set up a time.”

Targeting young people aged 15 to 25, Ms Young said it doesn’t necessarily have to be a

job people come looking for but perhaps it’s work experience or a placement to get them started.

While the expo will have representation from government agencies and industry professionals, Ms Young said construction, trades, hospitality and allied health services showed a particular interest in being a part of the event.

Being hosted at the Yarra Ranges Tech School campus, Ms Young said it’s also a great opportunity for young people to experience the 3D printers and other equipment on a tour of the facilities.

Young people gather for first Rural Rainbows meeting Young people from the Yarra Ranges came together to share their experiences and meet others within the LGBTQIA+ community at the first Rural Rainbows meeting last week.

Held at the Lilydale Youth Hub on Wednesday 13 April, peer mentors joined five Yarra Ranges locals in a safe, fun and inviting opening night of activities.

A spokesperson from the Rural Rainbows group said the first peer support session went well and “everyone had heaps of fun, which is the main aim.”

Icebreakers were used to get to know each other quickly, including the toilet paper game where the number of squares taken equaled the number of facts needing to be told about each person.

“We also sat together and brainstormed about what would make a safe, respectful and fun space for everyone attending.

“Some amazing ideas coming from the young people included ‘There’s no such thing as a fail, but only giving it your best shot’ and ‘Respect people’s abilities, pronouns, personal space and boundaries’.”

As a support group, representatives from Rural Rainbows said it is a space where people can be themselves and have fun, while sharing and laughing together.

“It’s important for anyone and everyone to feel safe, respected and feel like they belong, especially for LGBTQIA+ young folk who so often can feel isolated and alone.

“Rural Rainbows aims to be an inclusive, open and creative social space to give young people an opportunity to connect with their peers and actively create the community that they want to be a part of.”

Having not only a welcoming group of people but also a space to gather that feels safe and inviting was incredibly important to Rural Rainbows.

“The Lilydale Youth Hub is an amazing, welcoming and inclusive space and we are so grateful to them for letting us use their Hub for our activities.

“It’s so important especially in the community sector to have strong collaborations with other like minded organisations, to

share information, resources and ideas.

“Connection with both EACH and Lilydale Youth Hub workers means that the young people will have access to many different services that they might need.”

After a successful first session, the Rural Rainbows group is excited about the future and where it could lead in creating services, spaces and events for LGBTQIA+ young people.

“We hope the group continues to grow moving forward. That we can build a thriving, passionate, magical community for LGBTQIA+ young people in the Yarra Ranges.

“The young people involved in creating the Rural Rainbows know all too well the need to have a space where you can be exactly who you are. We want LGBTQIA+ young people to feel seen, heard, respected and connected to their community – let’s celebrate, educate, have fun and grow stronger together.”

Fierce Anzac Day clash Emerald Football Club and Gembrook-Cockatoo met in a fiercely contested Anzac Weekend clash, with Emerald coming out on top by 2 points. The game, celebrating Anzac Day,

World-class coach course

Local clubs received up to $5000 from a State Government grant program.

Funds for local clubs Ferntree Gully Cricket Club, Bayswater Lions Inline Hockey Club and Cockatoo and District Bowls Club are just some of the clubs to receive new grants from the Victorian State Government.

600 recipients will share in over $900,000 from the latest round of the sporting club grant program, with each club receiving up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for training coaches, officials and volunteers, or up to $5000 for club development.

Since 2014, grassroots sporting clubs have

received $13 million in support from the program.

Clubs applied for the grants from the three categories based on their own needs, with each club only being able to receive one grant.

The program aims to help fund grassroots clubs and organisations to address barriers to participation, develop safe and sustainable practices and build social local communities.

Cockatoo Little Athletics and Upwey Tecoma Cricket Club also received a grant from the program.

Yarra Ranges community coaches have the opportunity to join a world class course launched by Sports Australia.

The new Community Coaching Essential Skills Course has been developed in collaboration with sports and will benefit the whole sector, supporting local clubs, their volunteer coaches and most importantly every player and athlete.

The free training is a key part of the institution’s new approach to community coaching to help 500,000 coaches across the country.

Australian Sports Commission (ASC) CEO Kieren Perkins OAM said being a coach is more than just skills and drills.

“The environment a coach creates is critical to delivering a positive sporting experience, encouraging more people to play and stay in organised sport,” Perkins said.

“To help coaches achieve this, we’ve designed the new Essential Skills course to shake up traditional community coach education.

“We can’t afford to rely on a one-sizefits-all approach to community coaching anymore and our free course helps coaches understand the individual needs and motivations of every participant and most importantly, why they love to be involved in sport.”

Former Australian Diamonds netballer Clare Ferguson said the role a coach plays in the growth of a person cannot be overstated.

“The person who had the greatest impact on my sporting career and my life generally was my High School netball coach,” Ferguson said.

“She taught us so much more than just drills and skills. She taught us how to selfreflect, set goals and own our strengths which instilled this lifelong desire to be active, healthy, motivated and self-driven.”

Dozens of sporting organisations have welcomed the change, with Hockey Australia seeing an alignment between the free, online course and their new national

approach to coach support.

“We’re really excited about the new Essential Skills course as it talks the same language and feeds seamlessly into our plans to increase our number of accredited coaches,” Hockey Australia Chief Strategy Officer Michael Johnston said.

“These are unpaid roles so we need to support coaches as best we can through providing them with the relevant information at the relevant time on their coaching journey.”

Equestrian Australia is another sport supporting the new course, with Participation Manager Jill Taylor said it will transform their coaching culture.

“We’re committed to helping our coaches become more participant centred by helping them focus on the social, cognitive and emotional development of each rider, while at the same time developing their technical skills,” Taylor said.

“Our objective is to create a sport in which riders not just engage in our activities but fall in love with it.”

In developing the course, Sport Australia has partnered with Sport Integrity Australia to introduce coaches to important Safeguarding and Child Safe Practices information. Safeguarding is the process of protecting adults and children from harm and is the responsibility of everyone in sport. Child Safe Practices are a preventative and proactive approach to keeping children safe.

Over the coming months, Sport Australia will deliver even more resources to support community coaches including webinars, new podcasts, and dedicated master classes designed to expand on the course content.

The new Essential Skills Course replaces the Community Coaching General Principles Course and can be accessed via the Australian Sport Learning Centre here.
