Notice to Benny842 Pty Ltd in December 2020 after forming a belief the worker had not been paid all entitlements owed under the Restaurant Industry Award 2020 and the Fair Work Act. It is alleged the worker was underpaid the minimum wage rate, overtime rates, penalty rates for weekend and public holiday work, and accrued but untaken annual leave entitlements when his employment ended.

The Fair Work Ombudsman alleges Benny842 Pty Ltd, without reasonable excuse, failed to comply with the Compliance Notice, which required it to calculate and back-pay the worker’s entitlements.

It is alleged Mr Dharmatilake was involved in the contravention.

Fair Work Ombudsman Sandra Parker said the regulator would continue to enforce workplace laws and take businesses to court where lawful requests are not complied with.

“Where employers do not comply, we will take appropriate action to protect employees.

A court can order a business to pay penalties in addition to back-paying workers,” Ms Parker said.

“Any employees with concerns about their pay or entitlements should contact the Fair Work Ombudsman for free assistance.“

Operators of a former Pakenham burger outlet are facing court as the Fair Work Ombudsman commences legal action.

Facing court is Benny842 Pty Ltd, which operated a restaurant trading as Burger Boss in Pakenham until it ceased trading in 2020, as well as former company director Shane Dharmatilake.

The regulator investigated after receiving a request for assistance from a young worker who had been employed as a full-time food and beverage attendant at the restaurant between June and October 2020, when he was 20 years old.

Small lift in rates, charges

By Shelby Brooks Cardinia Shire Council’s 2022-23 budget will see an slight increase in rates and garbage fees, with $100 million announced for capital projects across the region.

General rates will increase 1.75 per cent, in line with the Victorian Government’s rate cap this year, while the residential garbage charge will increase to $326.80 for a 120 litre bin, reflecting the Victorian Government’s 12.5 per cent increase to the landfill levy.

The green waste charge will also increase from $126.60 to $129.

The proposed capital works program for the financial year 2022–23 includes $47m budgeted for all roads and intersection upgrade programs, including the $16m Princes Highway Intersection upgrades and $10m Sealing

the Hills programs funded in partnership with the Australian Government.

Other capital works budget allocations for 2022–23 include recreation, leisure, and community facilities - $9.8m, drains and bridges - $1.5m, footpaths and cycleways – $1.9m, parks, open space and streetscapes – $5.6m, property, including land acquisitions and construction and upgrades of buildings, such as sporting pavilions – $27m.

Capital work projects for 2022-23 include Officer District Park Masterplan – $3.3m, Brunt Road Integrated Children’s Facility – $3.2m, Timbertop Integrated Children’s Facility – $2.5m, Cardinia Youth Facility – $3.9m, Cora Lynn Pavilion – $2.3m, Kooweerup Bowls and Community Facility – $3.3m and Bunyip Soccer Sports Field Redevelopment – $1.5m.

More than $318m of capital works over four years will be included in the budget.

Cardinia Mayor Jeff Springfield said the budget reflected what the community wanted.

“We’re committed to making informed and strategic financial decisions that best serve our community and to delivering in the areas that our most important to you,“ he said.

“You’ve told us what’s important to you and we’ve listened; this proposed budget reflects our shared priorities. We’re focused on affordability and living within our means in this proposed budget. We’ve made informed decisions and prioritised essential services, with consideration for the risk, strategic, and political landscapes.

“The proposed budget has also been in-

formed by the Council Plan, and the countless strategies and Asset Management Plans that the council has adopted, all of which have been developed in consultation with our community.“ He said local businesses, ratepayers and residents were all feeling the ongoing burden of Covid-19 and recovery from natural disasters.

“We know we must meet these challenges head on, and this proposed budget strives to provide as much support for our community as possible and aligns to our commitment to deliver key projects and maintain community service levels into the future while adhering to the state government rate cap of 1.75 per cent,“ he said.

Cardinia Shire Council’s proposed 2022– 2026 budget is available for viewing and comment from members of the community until 5pm on Wednesday 11 May.

Together We Can summit to tackle family violence Local organisations are being encouraged to register as exhibitors at the 2022 Together We Can Community Leadership Summit, an opportunity for community members to come together and discuss ways to stop, prevent and end family violence in Cardinia Shire.

The free event offers businesses and notfor-profits the chance to promote their services which respond to and help those impacted by family violence.

Cardinia Mayor Jeff Springfield encouraged local organisations to register their interest in attending the event.

“The Together We Can summit aims to increase attendees’ knowledge and awareness of our local family violence service system and available support services,” councillor Springfield said.

“We want to empower members of our community to be able to report and respond to family violence and be able to assist others to do the same.

“But to do this, our whole community must be involved and support those impacted, especially children and young people.”

Topics covered throughout the two day event include what family violence looks like, how it can be stopped, how the laws work and where people can get local support.

The Together We Can Community Leader-

ship Summit is an initiative in partnership with community, government and not-forprofit organisations.

This year’s summit will be held at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Tuesday 17 May from 9.15am to 3.20pm and Wednesday 18 May from 9.15am to 2.45pm, with a special session for workplaces and sport and recreation clubs from 6.45pm to 9pm.

Dangerous drivers caught over the Easter break Almost 8000 offences were detected in the first five days of Victoria Police’s Operation Compass road safety effort.

The statewide road policing operation commenced on Thursday 13 April and continued across the Easter long weekend, historically a high-risk period on Victorian roads.

The Cardinia police service area detected 56 speeding offences, 13 unregistered vehicles, 13 disqualified drivers, eight unlicensed drivers, four disobey signs/signals offences, five drink driving offences, 36 drug driving offences, seven vehicle impoundments, four other drink/drug offences, three seatbelt offences and two mobile phone offences.

Despite significant amounts of holiday traffic causing delays across the state’s roads, more than a third of infringements issued were for speeding offences.

One in every 326 motorists was caught drink driving, with police conducting 101,917 preliminary breath tests over the operation’s first five days.

Police detected 579 unauthorised driv-

ers for being disqualified and unlicenced, and a further 837 for driving unregistered vehicles.

Two lives were lost on Victorian roads over the weekend, with fatal collisions in Elwood on Thursday 14 April and Greenwald in the state’s far southwest on Monday 18 April, bringing this year’s total to 78.

Operation Compass will continue this week, with police anticipating another busy period on the roads as the Anzac Day public holiday and end of Victorian school holidays coincide.

Assistant commissioner road policing Glenn Weir said police were pleading pleading with motorists to be patient and stay alert when travelling.

“Despite our best efforts, we still sadly saw two lives lost on Victorian roads over the weekend and police caught thousands of motorists engaging in unacceptable behaviour, putting themselves and others at risk,“ Mr Weir said.

Dancing for a good cause

By Shelby Brooks Hundreds of dancers rocked and rolled in Pakenham to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

The Rockn’ Suzies event, which featured for bands and a DJ at the Pakenham Hall, raised $7540.55 for the appeal.

In past years, organisers Sue Dobson, Marina Roberts and Robert Wright held fundraisers for the appeal in Berwick.

“We’ve held the Rockn Suzies Good Friday Appeal in Berwick since 2012,” Ms Dobson said.

“After two years of Covid-19 we thought we should bring back the fun and energy back into everyone’s lives with a smaller event in Pakenham.

“It was a great day- I think we’ll stay in Pakenham from now on.”

Along with the almost 400 dancers, a number of vintage cars were also on display, as well as retro stalls.

A signed guitar was auctioned for $450 and the Easter Bunny also paid the children a visit.

“Everybody was happy to be out and about.

It was nice to hold the event again,” Ms Dobson said.

Tins overflow for hospital

By Shelby Brooks and Jamie Salter A record $22 million has been raised for the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, with people giving generously across the district.

After a difficult two years with a heavy reliance on online fundraising, CFA volunteers from across the entire state were excited to hit the streets in their local communities.

The Pakenham CFA was out shaking tins on Friday 15 April, in a collection drive members have been undertaking since 2015.

Pakenham CFA member and fundraising organiser Stuart Sinclair said about 16 members donated their time to stand at intersections in Pakenham to collect donations.

“This is really the first real year after Covid-19 we’ve properly collected,“ Stuart said.

“It’s a great cause to support as a way for the brigade to give something else back to the community that isn’t fire related and it’s also a fun day and experience.“ This year, the brigade raised $5933.65 and Stuart thinks the total across the seven years they have been doing it is close to $50,000.

Lang Lang also shone bright this year in the regional tally, raising a whopping $13,374, while Warragul raised $7704 and Drouin $4657.

Officer Fire Brigade broke its fundraising record this year, raising a total of $10,971.30.

“Thank you so much to everyone who came through the freeway BP service stations in Officer and donated on Thursday and Good Friday,“ captain Robert McCandless said.

“It was definitely a great result considering we were out for about nine hours over two days.

“This is a record number for the Officer Fire Brigade since we started raising money for the Good Friday Appeal and we couldn’t be happier.“ The last time the Officer brigade fundraised in person, $9233.15 was collected.

“The previous year was virtual, so it was

“I don’t think we donate enough for these sort of things and this is our way giving back a bit.“ CFA Acting Chief Officer Rohan Luke presented the cheque to the Royal Children’s Hospital and congratulated all involved in

this year’s appeal.

“It was an honour to present the cheque to the Royal Children’s Hospital on behalf of the dedicated CFA members right across Victoria,” Mr Rohan said.

“CFA members already give up their time to protect the lives of Victorians through their brigades, and it’s a credit to their communitymindedness that they also take time out to fundraise for such a great cause.“ Brigades that set up a Virtual Tin Shake also raised a total of $38,122 online.

Intersections reopened

Major Roads Projects Victoria re-opened the Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road intersections on the Western Port Highway last week, following two-and-a-half weeks of 24/7 construction works.

Smaller temporary roundabouts have replaced the old roundabouts at the intersections, and temporary fencing and barriers have been installed to prepare for the installation of traffic lights later this year.

Speeds are currently reduced to 40 kilometres per hour at both intersections and to 60 kilometres per hour between the intersections.

During the construction period, the eastern approach at the Ballarto Road intersection will temporarily be one lane instead of two, while the left turn slip lanes from Western Port Highway to Cranbourne-Frankston Road will be closed.

Motorists will still be able to turn left from the outside lane.

A new shared walking and cycling path to connect the existing paths near the Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road intersection will be built as part of the Western Port Highway Upgrade.

The upgrade is set for completion by the end of 2022.

Retired residents step out

By Eleanor Wilson Casey Cardinia Life Activities had their fanciest footwork on display on Wednesday 13 April for a special Easter edition of their Twinkle Toes sequence in-line dancing club.

About 30 of the club’s most enthusiastic line dancers gathered at Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House for an afternoon of line dancing, afternoon tea and a fruitful Easter bonnet parade.

The club provides a range of activities for retired citizens in the area, including weekly coffee clubs, indoor bowls and IT discussion groups.

Assistant treasurer Val Porter, who has been involved with the club for 16 years, said the social aspect of the club was vital for retired community members.

“A lot of the members often live alone, so when they come to the club they forget about all their worries, about all their illnesses, and they get to come and make new friends,” Mrs Porter said.

While it is a weekly occurrence, last week’s Twinkle Toes meet was made extra special with

the addition of an Easter Bonnet parade.

Club members showed up in colourful, elaborate, handmade, Easter-themed hats to celebrate the Easter season, which wouldn’t have been complete without an afternoon snack of hot cross buns and easter eggs.

Group convenor and vice president Jacqui Wade said the line dancing club was one of Casey Cardinia Life Activities’ most popular activities.

“The club has been running for 25 years and Twinkle Toes has been going for almost all of that,” she said.

“It’s a great means of exercise because sometimes we do slower dances, and other times there are quicker ones.”

The event saw five of the club’s seven life members attend, including Ron and Shirley, who, despite approaching their 90s, convened the line dancing club until recently and still join in the synchronised dance afternoon each week.

“It’s our life,” Ron said.

Make fudge A simple one that even the kids could put together. Heat butter and condensed milk in a microwave before adding chocolate and stirring until it melts and combines with the milk and butter. Pour into a lined baking tray and refrigerate for four hours.

By Jamie Salter Pakenham residents are getting the skills they to carry out a suicide intervention and suicide first aid thanks to LivingWorks Suicide First Aid training.

An Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) two-day workshop was held at the Toomah Community Centre where participants could learn how to carry out a suicide intervention for someone thinking of self harming.

Usually a $585 workshop, the program was fully funded by the South Eastern Melbourne Primary Health Network (SEMPHN).

South Eastern Melbourne PHN suicide prevention lead and family violence champion Beth Dangerfield said suicide prevention was everyone’s business.

“Suicide is completely preventable and it does not discriminate – anyone can be impacted by suicide,” she said.

“Cardinia Shire is one area in the South East that has been disproportionately impacted by this issue which is why SEMPHN has partnered with LivingWorks Australia to offer Suicide First Aid training across the community.

“We hope that by preparing our communities to recognise and respond to the signs of suicide, they will feel better prepared to support their loved ones in times of distress and those who are struggling will be more quickly connected to the support they need, when they need it most.”

The LivingWorks training has been rolled out as part of the Suicide Prevention Placebased Trials, a Victorian Department of Health initiative in partnership with Primary Health Networks, to implement community-

driven, place-based approaches to preventing suicide.

The group training in Pakenham was mostly comprised of youth workers.

LivingWorks Australia’s Victorian state training manager Renee Tsatsis said it was crucial to be able to teach suicide first aid skills to these youth workers.

“Last time we ran local training with youth workers, one person in the group said to me, ‘I wish I’d learnt this training 10 years ago’,” she said.

“Youth workers do incredibly important work with young people who are often dealing with many complexities in their life.

“Learning suicide first aid skills means knowing how to start conversations about suicide and knowing how to keep someone safe when they say they are not OK.” More workshops will be coming up soon in the local area which will be open to anyone in the community to attend.

“We know that when a person is in crisis, they’re going to reach out to someone close to them, so LivingWorks suicide first aid training is beneficial not just for professionals, but for anyone,” Ms Tsatsis said.

“The more people who know what to do and what to look for when someone is having thoughts of suicide, the safer our community will be.”

Corporate director at O’Brien Real Estate Keysborough Darren Hutchins said there were three bidders at the auction, with the winning bidder hoping to redevelop the land to fit a sizable house.

Land campaign of the year The stunning sales result achieved at Mt Pleasant in Pakenham has won KR Peters the award for Land Campaign of the Year (Victoria and Tasmania) at the annual AREAs (Real Estate Excellence) awards.

The awards, held on Thursday 24 March, recognise businesses that made the most impact with property seekers during the 2021 calendar year.

KR Peters Directors Peter Nicolls and Ian Harris said the win was a huge pat on the back for the whole team behind the marketing of Mt Pleasant.

They say the award is even more satisfying considering the challenges the team faced selling land during the worst of Victoria’s COVID lockdowns in 2021.

Despite the challenges of Covid, by the end of the year 388 blocks had been sold.

When completed, Mt Pleasant, which comprises 100 elevated acres near the heart of Pakenham, will be home to 600 families.

“Mt Pleasant really appealed to buyers because of the variety of lot sizes which meant there really was a block for everyone, from 300m2 to over 1500m2,” said Mr Harris.

Mr Nicolls said the lockdowns supercharged the company’s marketing campaign as people looked for space and lifestyle.

“When Covid hit people were definitely looking to move out from being locked down in apartments or small homes in the suburbs.

They wanted backyards and a more relaxed lifestyle. Mt Pleasant ticked those boxes,” he explained.

Mt Pleasant is now fully sold. Fittingly, the last block sold on the day of the awards.

A project that was expected to take four years, was sold out in three such was the demand.

“When we first started the project people felt it was too far from the city, but when COVID struck they were suddenly not saying that any more. Instead they were saying ‘how can I buy a block? I don’t’ want to miss out’. The appeal was very strong,” Mr Nicolls said.

The clever use of technology also made it easy for buyers to visualise their new home.

“With Mt Pleasant our campaign included a 3D virtual tour,” explained Mr Harris.

“Potential buyers could put on a headset at the sales office and take a virtual walk around

the estate. Sales information was updated in real time by Mapovis which really helped people visualise what was available and what was selling.”

With Melbourne in lockdown for much of 2021, the KR Peters team also relied on DocuSign and Zoom to get business done.

“In the last six week lockdown we had 120 sales, some buyers purchasing sight unseen,” said Mr Nicolls. “Prices also skyrocketed, rising $100,000 in 18 months. It was like lighting a match. Sales just took off and the

momentum was unstoppable.”

Mr Nicolls said the KR Peters team was elated to add the AREA award to the two UDIA awards already picked up by KR Peters for Harbour Town in Patterson Lakes and Sienna in Mount Waverley.

“There wouldn’t be many land estates that in the past 12 months sold the number of blocks we sold. Proves to us we have the skills, the competency and the technology to do the job right. We are a powerhouse agency that can sell in tough times and in good times.”

Dr Nishan Fernando Dr Nishan Fernando, from New Zealand, completed a Bachelor of Science in physiology, and Post Graduate Diploma in Science, in pharmacology and toxicology from the University of Otago. His area of research was hypertension, and he published a Poisons Information Monograph for the World Health Organisation.

Nishan later completed his Bachelor in Dental Surgery at Hong Kong University.

Nishan was then employed in the Department of Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at Prince Philip Dental Hospital as a House Officer. He treated complex cases and medically compromised children, as well as orthodontic patients under the supervision of his orthodontic professor.

He volunteered his time with a cleft lip and palate team which went to Cambodia.

Upon returning to New Zealand, he registered with the New Zealand Dental Council and The General Dental Council (UK).

After a few years in private general dental practice, Nishan completed his Doctoral in Clinical Dentistry (Orthodontics) at the University of Adelaide. His area of research involved the investigation of dental, skeletal and facial complex changes with extraction orthodontic therapy, and assessment of the resultant aesthetic changes of the face. Nishan is also a Member of the Royal College of Surgeon and the secretary of the Australasian Begg Society of Orthodontists.

Here are a few ideas: Proper sales training for the sales team, improved marketing to better promote the company products and services and greater use of referrals (referred customers are always more likely to purchase).

There is also an easier way – upsell! This is the classic McDonald’s “Would you like fries with that” approach.

This is all about getting new and existing customers to spend more than they ordinarily would.

Take a look at what your business is currently selling and see whether you have anything else that your existing customers might buy along with the main purchase.

If you have ever bought a new car, you will know exactly what I mean – you will almost certainly have been offered paint protection and tinted windows and perhaps extras like sound system or tyre upgrades.

Many people will go for this since when compared to the overall price of the vehicle, they will seem small by comparison, but to the dealer all these extras can add up to considerable extra income over the course of the year.

And finally there is the simplest sales uplift of all – a price increase. Now to be clear here, I am not at all suggesting that customers be gouged as you have to be able to justify it, but I know of many businesses that either forget or don’t feel able to increase prices, sometimes for years!

If you don’t increase your prices at least once a year, you are going backwards by the rate of inflation, so small, incremental changes at least once a year are the way to go especially if there have been significant changes in exchange rates or the price of raw materials as has been the case in construction recently.

So let’s assume that the past few months have taken quite a toll on the business and you have a responsibility to increase company revenue.

Where do you start? In many companies, I often find that the first place sales people look to increase revenue is by acquiring new customers but think about what this entails: finding new prospects, meeting with them and starting to build rapport, understanding their business, appreciating their specific challenges, analysing how your products or services can address their issues and then finally convincing them that you have the right solution at the right price.

Yep, no doubt about it, sales can be a tough place to be especially since this will need to be done multiple times to achieve the desired income levels.

Whilst attracting and acquiring new customers has to be an integral part of the sales strategy for the business, there are in fact easier ways to do this which are also worthy of consideration.

First off, have a good look at how effective your selling techniques are.

The best way to do this is to create a sales pipeline which captures all the genuine opportunities that are being pursued.

Not only does this provide a useful way to keep track of things and let other key leaders in the business see what is being done here, you can also use this method to track your ‘sales conversion rate’ defined as: Sales Conversion Rate = Number of Acquired Customers / Number of Opportunities x 100 per cent.

This ratio will vary according to the nature of the marketplace, the type of business and of course the skill of the salesperson, but it should be tracked and monitored.

Obviously a low figure indicates that much more effort needs to be expended in order to get a sale, so a conversion rate of 20 per cent implies that if you want one more customer, you need to find on average five new opportunities.

Is this ratio increasing or decreasing for your business? Obviously, if you can increase this ratio, then you need to work less hard to find new customers, so how could this be done?

The exhibition itself will highlight Mr Sequeira’s artistic skill set of painting, installation, fashion and performance, which comes together to explore the themes of representation and identity.

“I’m really intrigued by the relationship between tradition and modernity, and in many ways that is what India is all about. It is ancient culture mixed with uber modernity,” he said.

Members of the local Indian community are being invited to take part in an upcoming art exhibition commissioned for Bunjil Place Gallery.

Multidisciplinary artist David Sequeira is inviting males of Indian descent from the southeast to model in his runway show Untitled India, which showcases a collection of 56 traditional kurtas (long shirts worn by men in India) designed to tell the personal history of India.

“So many times people’s understanding of India is about cricket or yoga or Bollywood, and I wanted to represent something about my Indian identity that was beyond that,” Mr Sequeira said.

“I want people to think about history and India beyond those sorts of tourist or TV experiences, and I invite the [Indian] community to have ownership over that as well.”

Designed by Mr Sequeira, the kurtas stand out in a mix of bright colours and printed images, striving to address the notion of ‘embodied history’.

He is looking for size small to medium, adult male volunteers to model the kurtas in a spectacular runway performance at the opening of his major solo exhibition, All the things I should have said that I never said, which is being held at Bunjil Place Gallery from Saturday 7 May to Sunday 21 August.

FOCUS ON … ANZAC DAY

The 2019 Anzac Day service in Upper Beaconsfield.

Anzac Day events return After two years of uncertainty due to the coronavirus pandemic, Anzac Day Dawn Services are coming back with no compulsory masks and no mandatory social distancing.

Pakenham RSL is looking forward to hosting its first public event in two years, after the service was restricted to RSL members and emergency service personnel last year.

The club is preparing for the usual thousand large crowd with road blocks in place.

Emerald RSL is also prepping for what they hope is a large turn out.

“The Emerald RSL looks forward to seeing Emerald coming out en masse at the two services at Anzac Place and the community march,” president Peter Maloney said.

“In previous years more than 3,000 people from Emerald and afar witness a very moving service that honours our fellow residents of Emerald and Australia who fought for our country.”

Monday 25 April Bunyip RSL Two services will be held on Anzac Day; one at 1pm in Garfield at the cenotaph and the other at Bunyip at 1.45pm at the cenotaph.

Cockatoo RSL The Cockatoo RSL is holding a dawn service at 6am, followed by a gunfire breakfast.

At 10.15am a march will take place from Cockatoo Primary School to the RSL with a possible fly over.

A memorial service will be held at 10.30am followed by a barbecue.

Emerald RSL On Saturday 23 April the traditional annual Anzac Football Match between Emerald and Gembrook will take place at the Emerald Football Netball Club, Chandler reserve.

The Anzac Day dawn service will commence on Monday 25 April at 5.30am at Anzac Place. Puffing Billy will present with its traditional whistle blast and the scouts will provide breakfast. At 10.30am the community march will take place from the town centre to An-

zac Place where the morning service will occur, including a flyover by veteran war planes.

Readings will be presented by local students and wreaths will be laid by the Emerald community.

Gembrook RSL Gembrook RSL will hold memorial services at the Remembrance Park Gembrook Cenotaph.

The dawn service will commence at 6am, but members of the public have been asked to arrive at 5.45am for a punctual start. Following the service, all will be welcome to attend JAC Russel Park for the gunfire breakfast.

At 10.45am, a march will take place along the Avenue of Honour in Redwood Road to the Cenotaph whee a service will commence at 11am. Following the ceremony, Gembrook RSL will offer refreshments to the community.

Kooweerup RSL A dawn service march will be held at 5.50am, beginning at the clock towers, heading along the Avenue of Honour and ending at the community centre.

A live bagpiper will be marching with the contingent.

The ceremony at the cenotaph begins at

6am which will be followed by a gunfire egg and bacon breakfast, provided by the CWA, Scouts and Lions Club.

Nar Nar Goon RSL A service will be held from 6am at the Nar Nar Goon RSL Memorial Park. The CFA will then host a Gunfire breakfast, supported by RSL and butcher.

Pakenham RSL A dawn service will be held at the cenotaph on the corner of Henry Street and John Street starting at 6am, however the usual breakfast will not be held due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Officer and District Community Association The Officer and District Community Association is hosting an Anzac Day morning dawn service at 6am sharp at the Officer Recreation Reserve memorial gates. Members of the public should arrive by 5.45am. The Officer Kangaroo Junior Football Club will provide a free breakfast after the service. The Officer OWLS will offer tea, coffee and juice.

Upper Beaconsfield RSL An Anzac Day memorial service will be held at 11am at the Upper Beaconsfield cenotaph, with all members of the public invited.

Clarke’s a ‘Juddy’ beauty

By Tyler Lewis Judson Clarke was among a group of players that got extremely lost on Richmond’s pre-season camp but, after an exciting start to the VFL season, it’s fair to say the promising forward has found his way back at the top level.

Richmond selected the Dandenong Stingray out of Berwick with pick 30 in the 2021 National Draft and he has since delivered a string of door-knocking performances in the VFL. Clarke has hit the scoreboard in three of his four matches this year, with a best of four match-defining goals in a 25-point win over Footscray last week.

Although an already agile forward, a preseason at the top level seems to have the exciting prospect moving even better than previously.

“Extremely,” Clarke said of how helpful his pre-season was.

“I think it has helped me get a bit of toughness and really be able to play out the length of games in the physicality that they are.

“If I didn’t have the pre-season, I don’t think I would be handling the physicality (of VFL) that well.

“I would be pulling up a lot more sore than I am “I am pulling up sore obviously, but not as much due to the tough pre-season which is good.”

That pre-season included some particularly long days on the bike and some full body wrestling at the end of hot days.

“I found it really fun, pre-season was really awesome, going on a camp up to Bright, that was challenging,” Clarke said.

“There was a lot of riding on the bike. I think our group rode about 100 kilometres on

“It was really good to bond more with the guys and get to know them better.

“Pre-seasons are tough, I think Monday sessions were probably the worst, they were just really long hard sessions and always at the end of the day we would have some sessions of just wrestling.

“Full body contact and not holding anything back.

“Although it was extremely tough for the boys after a long day of training, I think we really embraced it and we made the most out of it.

“I think that is how we have been able to shape how we have been going so far.”

The small forward role has been the staple of Richmond’s success in recent years, and while it is a tough spot to crack into at senior level, Clarke is relishing in his opportunity to play such an important position.

“I am absolutely loving it,” he said.

“I have got such great role models to look up to like Shane Edwards and Kane Lambert, they’re really helping me with vision and stuff like that.

“They’re helping me getting the best out of myself in terms of reviewing games.

“Kane Lambert has been awesome with just being on the bench for a few of the games, it has been really good to have him out for a half in round three as well.

“In terms of structure around my role, the

little tips and tricks I can do to lose my man and get him lost in the contest to get out in the open.

“The first few week’s it was pretty surreal (playing alongside premiership players). Coming into the club I couldn’t believe it, I had done it, I had been drafted and I was there.

“Now it has settled in a lot more and I am able to come in every day and see your teammates and it’s just the best fun.”

With four goals against Footscray, and a pair of goals against Carlton on Sunday, Clarke is starting to make some noise for the Tigers.

Though he is playing well and hearing good feedback, his focus is on developing his own craft.

“It’s been good, it’s still a work in progress,” he said.

“The feedback has been really good, every week we go in and look at the vision to see where we can improve.

“For me ultimately it’s about developing in that role I am playing and my forward craft as well, keep chipping away at that and hopefully good things to come.”

And as for who was to blame for the bike detour in Bright...Clarke played with a straight bat, revealing it was a ‘group effort’.

“It was a group effort on that one,” he joked.

“Our group was so far ahead of the staff organising the ride, we didn’t have a marker to direct us into town.

“We were flying ahead of the other groups “We were too far in front so we just kept riding towards Yackandandah, which was the complete wrong direction to where we were supposed to be going.”

Richmond take on Melbourne this Sunday, in the annual Anzac Eve clash.

Phillips a popular Choice at Warragul

By Kyle Galley Born and bred Gippslander Michelle Phillips returned home on Easter Sunday to secure an emotional win in the $35,000 Warragul Pacing Bowl Cup (2627m).

Phillips, in front of many families and friends, steered Sebs Choice to a popular allthe-way win.

Sebs Choice, trained by John ‘Bulldog’ Nicholson, was rated a treat by Phillips and withstood a challenge in the home straight from runner up Imnopumpkin to secure victory in a race time less than two seconds outside the record set in last year’s cup.

Phillips was born in Warragul, and raised in Neerim, and has had a lifelong love of horses, having competed in pony club as a junior.

As a teenager she enrolled as a student at the Gippsland Harness Training Centre, and a natural affinity with horses saw her successfully take on race driving a handful of years ago.

Now currently based closer to the bigger racing opportunities in the Melton region, Michelle travels far and wide for race driving, and is one of many talented young drivers racing on a competitive circuit around the state.

She returns home to race when able, and Sunday’s win, her second for the afternoon following from Incognito’s win in a support event, was well and truly embraced by the enthusiastic crowd.

Emotions spilled over for Michelle upon returning to the presentation area post-race, and the tears flowed after a quick hug from her mum Faye.

“To get this Warragul Cup win, it’s just another notch in the belt, and it shows just how good ‘Sebby’ is...it means a lot,” Phillips said.

“It definitely is a highlight, and one I’ll remember forever because you go out and race in big races and anything can happen, but I was just lucky that today it was in ‘Sebby’s’ favour.”

“I live at the stables, and when I have a bad day, I go and give ‘Sebby’ a cuddle and sit in his box for about two hours,” she said.

“It’s a bit of a sob story, but he’s one of a kind.”

Sebs Choice has only raced on 22 occasions, and has recorded 10 victories to sit alongside seven minor placings.

He’s raced by members of the Higgs family, who were trackside for the win.

Teenager Sebastian Higgs picked out Sebs Choice at the sales as a yearling, an astute purchase that has paid dividends, as the horse has now won over $115,000 for connections.

Michelle will now travel to Mildura for their feature Pacing Cup carnival, which begins on Tuesday night, and is a regular competitor at that venue’s race meetings.

Warragul Cup Day will also be remembered fondly by young local trainer-driver Nathan Rothwell, who landed his initial racetrack success in the last race on the card.

A very Good Friday at Sale

By David Nagel Trainers from the South East suburbs of Melbourne have taken out the majority share of the $1.4million in prizemoney on offer at Victoria’s first Good Friday race meeting at the Sale Turf Club.

The destination event, which will rotate annually throughout country Victoria, has seen thoroughbred racing join the AFL, NRL, NBL and A-League in conducting professional sport on Good Friday in Victoria.

While Warrnambool-trainer Lindsey Smith took out the main race on the card – the $500,000 The Country Discovery (1100m) – it was left to Cranbourne, Mornington and Pakenham trainers to take out six of the eight races on the program.

Wendy Kelly, and the training partnerships of Mick Price/Michael Kent Jnr and Trent Busuttin/Natalie Young, took care of business for Cranbourne, while Kane Harris and Cliff Young waved the flag highly for the team from Mornington.

And Pakenham-trainer Phillip Stokes also got in amongst the action when his exciting sprinter Red Hot Nicc scored a strong victory in the $100,000 BenchMark-64 Handicap (1100m).

The three-year-old gelding - Nicconi/Glorious Red – has been super-consistent since kicking off his career in March last year, and drew favourably in barrier two for his Good Friday assignment.

The pair then kicked for home, holding off the expected late charges in the 15-strong field to win by a length-and-a-quarter on the line.

Red Hot Nicc is building a solid block of form, with Friday’s win his second from nine starts…and missing the placings only three times in his career.

As usual, Good Friday was about a lot more than just sport, with the Victorian Racing In-

dustry making a sizeable donation to the Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

Racing Victoria Director Paul Guerra was on hand at Sale to make a $100,000 donation on behalf of the Victorian Thoroughbred Racing Industry.

“The All-Star Mile was raced at Flemington a couple of weeks ago, the mighty Zaaki won it, Racing Victoria through the nomination fees there and together with the Sale race day, have raised $100,000, and that’s going to the Royal Children’s Hospital Appeal,” Guerra said.

Horses that nominated for the $5 million All-Star Mile had to pay a $500 entry fee which went straight to the appeal.

“We’re really proud of the connection with racing Victoria, they’re very generous, this is the fourth year in a row they’ve donated the funds from the race, and we’re very appreciative,” said Peter Blunden, who is a board member of the Good Friday Appeal.

The donation also included significant funds raised from the hosting of the inaugural Good Friday race day at Sale.

“The work that’s been done by Sale is extraordinary, and it’s great to be on course today for our first ever Good Friday meeting,” Racing Victoria EGM Greg Carpenter said.

“The All-Star Mile is much more than just a horse race and one of the great parts of it has been our partnership with the Good Friday Appeal and all the fantastic work they do.”

The $100,000 donation doubled Racing Victoria’s donation of $50,000 from last year.

Dirty Mud Rats sniff out a first victory over Middels

By David Nagel It’s taken 10 rounds into the season but the Mud Rats are celebrating their first win of the 2022 South West Gippsland Darts League (SWGDL) after a 9-6 win over Middels.

The Mud Rats hosted Middels at the Cardinia Club in Pakenham in a battle of the seventh and eighth teams in the competition.

The last time they met, Middels won a nail-biter against the Rats…ending the night with an 8-7 victory in round three.

But this time it was the Mud Rats turn to sniff out a victory and keep their very real hopes of climbing the competition ladder alive.

The Rats are still last on the ladder, but are now only one win behind Middels and Gembrook – with a better percentage – with just four rounds to go in the season.

The other big result in round 10 saw the Warriors move into fourth place on the ladder with a 10-5 victory over previous incumbent Paky One. The Warriors were in great form, with Liam leading the way with a terrific night at the oche and the rest of his teammates coming along for the ride.

The win locks away a double-chance for the Snipers come finals time.

Dean was at his brilliant best for the Snipers, throwing a best-of-the-night seven tons and also producing a fantastic 108 peg out!

Dean has thrown 15 more tons than his nearest rival this season to be the standout player in the league.

Players enjoyed a night off on Tuesday 19 April, with round 11 scheduled for Tuesday 26 April.

The match-of-the-night will see fifthplaced Paky One host second-placed Snipers at the Cardinia Club.

Shanelle shines in sparkling UTR display at Mornington

By David Nagel Shanelle Algama will have fond memories of his last Tennis Victoria Junior Tournament after showing great determination to win the Universal Tennis Rankings (UTR) event at Mornington recently.

Algama, from the Narre Warren Tennis Club, made his way comfortably through to the semi-finals, and looked set for a finals appearance after taking the first set 6-2.

But the talented youngster’s plans of an easy progression were put on hold when he fell 2-5 down in the second set.

But drawing on the never-say-die attitude of his tennis hero Novak Djokovic, Algama rallied beautifully in the second set to square things away at 6-all and forcing a tie-breaker.

Algama took the set, and the semi-final, setting up a grand final appearance in his last ever junior event.
