Sibling support

By Parker McKenzie The Monash Gully Freemasons district has raised $45,000 dollars for Interchange Outer East, a charity supported by the lodge for over a decade.

The money raised goes towards a support program for siblings of disabled children.

Since 2008, local lodges and the Freemasons Foundation have presented Interchange Outer East with $395,000 to ensure the Siblings Program can continue.

Interchange Outer East family support program organiser Jenna Tatterson said the money raised is used to run activities and weekends away throughout the year.

“It’s time for them to come away, have some time away from their family and hang out with kids that are in a similar situation,” she said.

There was a select group that I watched from being five or six years old and they’ve just turned eight. You can watch the progress as they become more confident, but also learn skills and keep the connection they make in the program.”

The program provides activities and camps for disadvantaged siblings to receive support, counselling and guidance. It is fully funded by the Freemasons through raffles, fundraising and events, with 80 to 100 children participating in the program each year.

Monash Gully Free Masons District member Sashi Sanmugathas said Interchange Outer East struggled to find funding for the program, so the Freemasons stepped in to help.

“They want to bring these siblings together so they will know that they’re not alone. They have other families in the same situation,” he said.

The Monash Gully Lodge has raised up to $60,000 dollars some years for the program.

Mr Sanmugathas said he has been involved in assisting the program for six years with regular fundraising and charity drives.

“When you come into the program as a kid, you don’t do it for one or two years. You will continue until you become a young adult,” he said.

“I received this letter from a kid who was

part of the program for the last 10 years, now she’s 19 years old.”

In the letter, Natalie Gammino details how she joined the program at age nine and the impact it has had on her life.

“Starting the Siblings program as early as I did was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I have learned and grown so much within the past 10 years,” she wrote.

“Now as I am at the end of my time in the sibling’s program, I urge you all to know just

how important this type of program is for people like me and how much of an impact this has had on us and our lives to help us develop necessary skills and techniques that help to support us in the long run.”

The Freemasons Foundation — the charitable arm of Freemasons Victoria — raises and donates $2.5 million a year to charities and organisations like Interchange Outer East. Freemasonry is one of the oldest fraternal organisations in the world.

Service returns to Quarry

By Parker McKenzie Local Rotary and CFA volunteers have collaborated to bring an ANZAC Day Dawn Service back to the Ferntree Gully Quarry.

The service will be held on Monday 25 April at Quarry Reserve, Ferntree Gully, from 5.45am to 6am.

Ferntree Gully CFA Captain Seamus Smith said the service had been held at the quarry in previous years, but the original organisers weren’t able to hold it in 2022.

“It was acknowledged through our networks that we really missed it over the last couple of years when we weren’t able to have it due to the pandemic,” he said.

“When we found out that it was not going to be able to be put together by the original team, we got together with Rotary and combined to get the event back up and running again.”

The service will feature a Remembrance to the fallen, the laying of wreaths, the ode and the Last Post, a minutes silence, a Reveille and the national anthem.

Rotary Ferntree Gully co-president Christine Anderson said the ambiance and scenery of the quarry make it “magic”.

“It’s a very unique setting, mainly because the sun comes up over the mountains and then the echo against the rock face,” she said.

“Usually there are between 300 and 500 people, but this year we’ve been advertising very heavily, so we don’t know what to expect.”

St Joseph’s College will be involved in the service and a bugler will be present.

“It is part of who we are and we don’t want to be sitting and isolated in different areas. You

want to get people together and community events like this and Knox Festival are extremely vital.”

Free toolkits for businesses Local and national groups oppose lake works

By Parker McKenzie Local and national conservation groups have called on the State Government to stop the development of a Knox site, where hatchings of the vulnerable Blue-billed Duck have taken place.

The “Lake Knox” site — on the corner of Scoresby Road and Burwood Highway — is on the grounds of the former Knoxfield Horticultural Research Institute, where it is believed to have been used to store water for use in irrigating research crops in either the late 1950s or early 1960s.

The land it is situated on is owned by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning. It was rezoned in 2018 for Development Victoria to develop the land for residential housing and community space.

Local community groups including the First Friends of Dandenong Creek, Friends of Lake Knox Sanctuary and the Croydon Conservation Society have signed a petition to stop the development of the site, which has 22,000 signatures.

National conservation groups including the Jane Goodall Institute Australia, Wildlife Victoria, Environment Victoria, Australian Conservation Foundation, Greenpeace Australia, Australian Wildlife Protection Council, For the Love of Wildlife, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Australian Animal Protection Agency have endorsed protecting the site from further development.

First Friends of Dandenong Creek president Anthony Bigelow said there is overwhelming support from the wider community in ending the planned development.

“We know that the public notices will be put up by the council shortly. So we’d be encouraging everyone to object to those, you don’t have to be local in the area to object to a public notice, especially if it’s environmental-based as well,” he said.

“It’s still public land. So we are dealing with the public asset here as well. Council is involved in that, but at the end of the day, it’s actually the State Government that needs to step in and step up.”

“We’ve been consulting with the community for several years to inform them of the site’s development, including replacing the existing dam with a vibrant new wetlands system,” the spokesperson said.

“The new wetlands will ensure a safe, suitable and long-term breeding environment for the threatened Blue-billed Duck and other species, as well as result in a far better overall environmental outcome and improve the health of local waterways, including Blind Creek.”

An independent study commissioned by the community raised concerns over Development Victoria’s ability to achieve a better or even comparable ecological outcome.

The report by Professor Paul Boon stated several issues with the plans, including that claims of guaranteed ecological success “are inconsistent with scientific literature,” “doubts over Development Victoria’s capacity to deliver high-quality replacement aquatic habitat,” and the plan containing questionable assertions about Lake Knox and its development.

Development Victoria has lodged the first subdivision planning permit application for the residential redevelopment with Knox City Council, along with the planning permit application for the proposed wetland.

Small to medium businesses in the heavy vehicle industry are able to apply to Cardinia Shire Council for a free toolkit to address the serious health and safety risk and associated liabilities of alcohol and drug related issues in the workplace.

Cardinia Shire Council announced it was successful in receiving $7000 grant program on Monday 4 April and said the aim was to assist heavy vehicle transport businesses in designing and implementing an alcohol and drug policy within the workplace.

A spokesperson from Cardinia Shire Council said community action is vital in reducing serious injuries and deaths on Victorian roads.

“Alcohol and drug issues are a serious health and safety risk, particularly for employees who are driving on the road. As of 1 April 2021, the blood-alcohol limit is zero for drivers of heavy vehicles greater than 4.5 tonne (GVM),” the spokesperson said.

Consistent management and decisionmaking regarding related matters is also a goal for the Council.

The grant funding was received from the Victorian Government’s Department of Transport.

Businesses are advised to email Cardinia Shire Council to apply for the toolkit and applications will remain open until all spots are filled.

Cardinia Shire Council is calling for member nominations for a new Cardinia Tourism Advisory Committee.

Council said Residents seeking nomination to the committee should be able to demonstrate that they reside or work in Cardinia Shire, have experience in the tourism industry, are able to advance tourism within the region, be able to work in a team, are respected by others and can effectively advocate.

Members of the committee are appointed for two years. Nominations close Thursday 5 May at 4pm.

Reopening after Victoria’s lockdown ended in October last year, business at Joe and Julie Azzopardi’s Bed & Breakfast has increased significantly - a warm welcome after the unpredictability of the last two years.

“We’re now getting weekday bookings that we rarely had in the past as well as the weekends,” Mr Azzopardi said.

With trees falling down around the property in last year’s June storms, and false starts with re-openings of accommodation, the income generated from visitors is helping renovate the Azzopardi’s Bed & Breakfast garden to attract stayers.

“We had some visitors here from from South Australia over the weekend, so there have been interstate visitors as well, from Queensland and South Australia. But in the main, it’s been from Melbourne metropolitan and the local government areas around us,” he said of the visitors they host at their lodge.

With the inability to travel interstate and overseas during the pandemic, Mr Azzopardi said Victorians are realising the Yarra Valley is on their doorstep and are planning much further ahead for their trips.

“We’d get booked, generally, two to three weeks in advance,” he said.

“But now we’re finding we’re being booked months in advance.”

As a small, two-suite accommodation mostly suited to couples, they have been pleased to build relationships with return guests.

“We try and make that occasion special for them,” she said.

Victoria Police and Transit Safety Division officers undertook a planned operation in Bayswater on Friday 8 April.

The operation targeted weapons and drug offenses in Bayswater CBD and railway station.

200 people were searched under the Control of Weapon act using metal detectors, resulting in eight people being arrested for drugrelated matters.

Victoria Police said they were happy to report no weapons were located.

Scoresby man charged with murder A 30-year-old man from Scoresby has been charged with murder following an incident at a property on Nardu Court on Thursday 7 April.

Police said they were called to the house and cordoned off the surrounding area after concerns were raised for the welfare of two people inside the house. Attending police located the body of a 78-year-old man.

Police said the parties involved are believed to be known to each other and they are not looking for anyone further at this time.

Voters throughout the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges will head to the polls on 21 May after a six-week federal election campaign.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison informed Governor-General David Hurley on Sunday 10 April of his intention to call the election at Government House in Canberra.

Former Speaker of the House Tony Smith is retiring from politics after serving as the Member for Casey since November 2001. Mr Smith was widely respected by parliamentary colleagues for his bipartisanship.

Currently, there are five candidates who have declared their intention to nominate for the federal seat, which is located in the southeast of Melbourne.

Local businessman Aaron Violi is the Liberal candidate nominated to replace Mr Smith after winning a crowded pre-selection in November 2021. Mr Violi will be hoping the goodwill towards Mr Smith will serve as a quasiincumbency advantage for him, as he has signalled he will pursue a similar platform to the retiring member if elected.

Former infantryman, Air Force navigator and Australian Federal Police member Anthony Bellve is the United Australia Party candidate. Mr Bellve and the UAP are running on platform of ending lockdowns, banning domestic “vaccine passports”, abolishing the national cabinet, investing in nuclear technology, and protecting free speech and “Australian values”.

While many candidates have been active in the community promoting their aspirations, with the election campaign officially started residents in the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley should expect to see them even more in the coming weeks.

Bumpy drive for produce ROADS FOR AGRIBUSINESS

By Callum Ludwig Yarra Ranges’ agribusinesses are struggling to prevent their produce from being damaged by unsealed roads that link to many local farms and orchards.

Yarra Valley Cherries is based on Victoria Road in Seville, a long stretch of dirt road and during the Cherry season from November to December the roads are precarious after a wet springtime, Andrew Fairley, owner of Yarra Valley Cherries said the damage to the unsealed road after rain is inevitable.

“We get wash-aways on the road, because there’s a lot of water comes in from various from all directions and no matter how hard council try to fix the drains, they seem to block up,” he said.

“Because of the intensity of the water, it starts pulling the road away and softens up the road, when you have people driving too fast it then it creates really significant corrugations and big holes when it starts to reform.”

Mr Fairley said the bumpy, uneven roads cause significant damage to high-quality produce from agribusinesses all over the Yarra Ranges.

“When our fruit is packed into pallets and boxes for sale into the domestic and international market, as soon as it gets out onto the dirt road and it starts getting pummelled across the corrugations, the fruit settles in the

Yarra Valley Cherries is not alone and is in support of the Yarra Ranges Council’s push for ‘Roads for Agribusiness’ federal funding.

“They [YRC] wanted to really ensure the Federal Government had an understanding of the impact that poor roads had on agricultural producers, particularly where you have a product that is susceptible to damage.”

$10 million for disasters

By Parker McKenzie Yarra Ranges Council has received $10 million in funding from the Federal Government’s Preparing Australia Program, the most out of any municipality in the country.

The Preparing Australia Program funds projects to mitigate or reduce disaster risk, impact and consequences. The funding will be delivered over a six-year period.

Mayor of Yarra Ranges Jim Child said the funding will increase disaster preparedness, risk management, recovery and future resilience for communities in the shire.

“We’re extremely thankful that the Federal Government has recognised the importance of this issue, particularly as we approach the one-year anniversary of the catastrophic storms that hit the Dandenong Ranges,” Mr Child said.

“Responding in an emergency is as much about preparation and planning as it is about the actual response and clean-up itself, so this funding will go a long way to help us plan and protect our communities for any future emergencies that may arise.”

The funding will be used towards the Resilient Yarra Ranges Project, which aims to increase resilience planning, complete tree management and clean-up from

storm events, access the feasibility for a microgrid across the essential buildings in Monbulk, upgrade council community buildings to serve as emergency relief centers, provide suitable facilities for those unable to use accessible toilets at Kilsyth Sports Centre, commission a bushfire risk assessment for areas in the Dandenong Ranges and provide better-coordinated support and material air resources across the Yarra Ranges.

Mr Child thanked the retiring member for Casey Tony Smith, who he said has been a wonderful local representative for the Yarra Ranges.

“Tony has been a great advocate for our community for a long period of time and has helped us advocate for better funding and services in our municipality.

“This is a perfect example of the great working relationships we have with our counterparts across different levels of Government.”

Mr Child also said there is still significant work towards recovery from the June 2021 storm weather event.

On February 11 1872, the proclamation of the Shire of Lillydale ushered in one of the first forms of local government in the area. The Shire of Yarra Ranges was formed in 1994 by the merger of parts of Shire of Sherbrooke, Shire of Healesville, Shire of Upper Yarra and Shire of Lillydale.

The Power and the People exhibition celebrates the work of these councils and their communities over the years.

Eighteen members of the Yarra Ranges Heritage Network collaborated to create the exhibition, to help demonstrate the importance of history in the development of their communities and the partnerships between local government and residents.

The exhibition shares stories of how buildings, facilities, services and events in our communities have transformed from an idea and local need into reality.

The exhibition will be displayed in the Monbulk Hub from April 12 until May 18 so today’s community can learn more about their rich heritage.

Truth-telling begins in Vic

By Mikayla van Loon The Yoorrook Justice Commission has officially launched its truth-telling process in Victoria with local Elders’ yarns scheduled to hear the concerns of First Nations People.

Commissioner and deputy chair Sue-Anne Hunter, a Wurundjeri and Ngurai illum Wurrung woman, said the launch of the commission was a historic moment for Victoria as the first truth-telling inquiry ever conducted.

“It signified what First Peoples in Victoria have been working towards for a very long time, which is achieving truth and justice,” she said.

“It signified the first steps and formal start towards learning about the injustices experienced by the First Peoples since colonisation.

The truths and stories told by First Peoples will be difficult to retell and listen to, but it’s an important step towards healing.”

With ancestors in William Barak, who was closely associated with the Aboriginal settlement Coranderrk located near Healesville in 1863, and his sister Annie Borate, Ms Hunter said she imagines they would be proud and pleased to see the progress happening in Victoria.

As the Yoorrook commissioners travel Victoria to hear from Elders on their priorities for the work of Yoorrook, Ms Hunter said she hopes the yarns are “beneficial in grounding our inquiry in the cultural authority of our Elders.”

“The Elders’ Yarns are incredibly significant in the truth and justice process as our Elders are an essential guiding force for the work we’re undertaking,” she said.

“The Yarns will help us understand exactly where our focus should be throughout the process and into formal hearings next month.

Our Elders will help us understand which areas are most important for community so that this process has the greatest chance of true healing.”

Both historical and ongoing injustices will be reflected on including cultural violations and massacres, policing and criminal justice,

The truth-telling and hearings will be taking place from 26 April, allowing First Nations Elders to share their experiences, stories and pain at a public hearing in an attempt to heal.

As someone who has worked in Aboriginal child and family welfare for over 20 years, Ms Hunter said going into the yarns and formal hearings her background gives her a unique understanding of her people and the challeng-

es they face everyday.

“If we can break those barriers to speaking out and do things differently, we hope they too will come forward to tell their stories in a supported and safe way.”

Elders’ Yarns can be conducted in three ways: by attending a group Elders’ Yarn, a oneon-one session as scheduled upon request or a cultural or historical site visit also to be scheduled on request.

These yarns and public hearings will lead to

an interim report that is due in June. The Yoorrook will invite First Peoples to tell their truth in the second half of 2022, where the broader Victorian community will also be invited.

Top social justice priorities identified for Casey area

By Mikayla van Loon The community of Casey has identified the most pressing social justice issues it believes needs to be addressed in an Australian first report produced by The Salvation Army.

Data compiled in the National Social Justice Stocktake Report (NSJSR) showed the overwhelming percentage of people who have witnessed or experienced mental health concerns in the electorate of Casey.

While 67 per cent of respondents in Casey listed mental health as the top priority, which was 10 per cent higher than the state, social isolation and loneliness was within the top five, something that was not identified for Victoria or the nation.

The Salvation Army’s head of public relations Bruce Harmer said the pandemic had quite a large influence on the social issues people felt needed more support in a postpandemic world.

“Our experience with Covid has been that many people felt socially isolated and disconnected from society, there’s no doubt about that,” he said.

“Along with the increase of mental health issues, the stigma around speaking about mental health seemed to evaporate to a degree.

“People were more willing to share how they were feeling, something that was translated in the number of people that see it as the highest issue in Casey.”

Housing affordability (55.3 per cent), followed by family violence and drug and alcohol abuse (both 37.9 percent) rounded out the top five concerns, something Mr Harmer said all fit within the space of mental health stressors.

“When the Salvation Army came into each of the electorates right across the country and asked the constituents what are the top

social issues from your perspective, it gave them an opportunity to sit and reflect.

“They are certainly social issues that need addressing, but…we’re on the right road to addressing them if we’re prepared to talk about them.”

By releasing the report, Mr Harmer said The Salvation Army hopes it draws attention to the key issues facing residents within electorates like Casey as it comes closer to a federal election.

“We want politicians, we want those who are running for public office, along with education, along with transport, along with health, we want them to think a little deeper

Mr Harmer said the report and research will also instruct The Salvation Army in how best to engage and provide support in the Casey community moving forward.

“For the Salvation Army, it underlines and confirms for us that these social issues are worth pursuing because other people in the community also see them as issues that need to be addressed.”

New centre for Vicroads The new VicRoads service centre in Ringwood has opened to the eastern suburbs with the facilities now offering licence testing and inspections.

As the major hub now for the Yarra Ranges Shire since the closure of the Mooroolbark testing site, the purpose built centre was said to have “more testing capacity than any existing centre in Melbourne’s east” by a Department of Transport spokesperson in December last year.

The State government expects the Heatherdale Road centre will be able to supply 1,000 appointments per week, including 600 license tests.

“The opening of the new VicRoads Testing and Inspection Centre in Ringwood will make it easier, faster and more accessible for people to complete their everyday paperwork,” Roads and Road Safety minister Ben Carroll said.

“Whether it’s vehicle testing, license testing or drive tests – we’re making it more convenient for locals to access the services they need right in the heart of Ringwood, with the modern facilities they deserve.”

Other services include both computerbased and drive tests, as well as vehicle inspection and long vehicle testing for cars towing trailers or caravans, with more than 50 car spaces for customers, as well as a canopy dedicated to vehicle testing.

For residents based in the Yarra Valley, the closure means learner drivers will be required to go to either Ringwood or Pakenham to undertake driving lessons and sit their driving test.

The Mooroolbark VicRoads closure was the fourth for the Yarra Ranges Shire in the last five years, after the Monbulk, Healesville and Yarra Junction centres were shut down in 2016 but the government hopes being located close to public transport, it will ideal for customers.

Testing and inspection services are available by appointment only and can be booked now through the VicRoads website.

A new Ringwood Customer Hub is set to open nearby in mid-2022. The temporary Ringwood Licence Testing Centre along Warrandyte Road will remain open for license testing until mid-June.

The Lilydale Youth Hub is a mental health and wellbeing service for young people aged 12-25 living, working, or studying in the Yarra Ranges.

Since launching in October last year, we’ve supported young people in 39 of the Yarra Ranges 63 postcodes, from Lilydale to Belgrave, Healesville to Warburton and every town in between.

We do this through outreach, where a member of our support team can come and meet young people where they feel most comfortable – home, school, even a local café to chat through things.

The last two years have been particularly hard as young people attempt to adjust to school and work in a Covid-world. It has raised many new issues for young people in the Yarra Ranges and often made existing issues worse.

But we have seen firsthand how resilient and strong the young people in our community can be when given the support they need to thrive.

That’s why we’re here. Our support team helps young people to work out what they need to be thriving, safe, and valued.

If other services are needed, then a case manager will help with referrals, making appointments, and supporting clients to attend those appointments – because sometimes getting help isn’t easy.

Services that we regularly connect young people to include counselling and clinical mental health support; physical health such as GP appointments, dental, and sexual health; education and employment services; legal assistance; Aboriginal community services; and homelessness or out of home care support.

Sometimes young people and their families are unsure of what they need or where to find it.

Our support team are experts at navigating the mental health and social services system – so no one has to take the journey alone.

Mental health support isn’t always about counselling and psychologists. This year, we’ve run Creative Art Therapy, Animal Therapy, Yoga, Music Sessions and Workout sessions on offer, where young people can connect and enjoy themselves. We’re always planning more fun things too.

Our Hub space is open 12-5pm Monday to Friday, for young people who need a safe, welcoming space. Come in and relax, grab snacks, charge a phone, meet our support team – or just have some quiet space.

Failed art project repaired

By Parker McKenzie Yarra Ranges Council has announced work to repair a failed art installation on Blacksmith Way in Belgrave has been completed.

In December, a project began to improve the surface in Blacksmiths Way by adding coloured highlights and artwork of platypuses. Council said a “bad batch of coating combined with weather complications” resulted in the graphic feature drying with an uneven and cloudy finish.

“Late last year, we resurfaced the laneway and added a graphic feature to the road surface,” Yarra Ranges Council said.

“Unfortunately due to an issue with the coating used for the works, the graphic feature on the road hasn’t rendered with the finish and vibrancy we intended.”

Deputy Mayor Johanna Skelton said that works had recently taken place to fix the coloured surface, after an error from the contractor.

“The contractor came back to fix up the surface’s colouring at no cost to our community,” she said.

“We appreciate the understanding and patience of the community as works started up again, and I think the new road surface looks so much better than it did previously.”

The water graphic spans roughly 300 metres of Blacksmiths Way, which is located between Belgrave Train Station and Burwood Highway.

“Over many years, Council and other organisations have been working to highlight the importance of reducing waste, putting your rubbish and recyclables in the bin, “If you litter, that litter will end up in our waterways, risking the wellbeing of plants and animals in the Dandenongs and further downstream.”

The works were undertaken after members of the public raised concern over the final result of the installation and the environmental impact of the chemicals and materials used.

Yarra Ranges Council said in February 2022 the works consisted of pressure washing, grinding back certain areas, removing debris, premixing and rolling out new surface materials.

Spirituality finds a home

By Tyler Wright Dandenong Ranges’ locals are finding new ways to explore spirituality and alternative healing in the community after the pandemic.

Psychic Medium Drift Lee said during the pandemic, and after many lockdowns in Victoria, people are looking for validation and meaning in their lives more than ever.

“What they’re searching for is themselves, that beautiful internal inner light, that divine spark that is them - and it’s always there,” she said.

It was not until the medium was 23 she had a life-changing experience which increased her sensitivity to the energy around her, and something already present in her lineage drew her to eventually begin doing readings for others.

Drift said she is noticing there is an increasing awareness of spirituality in the community in recent years.

“You can walk into a little gift shop now and it’s common to see a smudge stick or some sage and people buying oracle cards and I think it’s making its way into the mainstream.”

She will be conducting a free upcoming reading in Olinda, connecting with spirits who come forward for those in the audience.

“I really love doing these kind of events,” she said.

“Being in that energy collectively is really beautiful.

“Truly the heart of the work is really about being of service to the spirit world, and giving back.”

Moon and Soul is also a new alternative and holistic health service that recently opened on Monbulk’s Main Street, and it has been welcomed by the community owner Rachel Lee said.

“People are coming in a bit surprised about what it is that we’ve got happening,” Ms Lee said.

Ritual healings, therapeutic counselling and panic aura healing are some of the services on offer and Rachel’s inspiration to build the space came from her own healing journey.

“I discovered the beauty and transformative power in nature and spirituality and everything to do with love and loss and darkness,” she said.

“I thought there was a real gap.”

Psychic Medium Drift Lee will be looking to connect to passed loved ones of audiences members at her event ‘Messages from Heaven’ on Saturday 7 May in Olinda.

The reception since opening has been better than expected, and she said she is learning from store-goers who have an abundance of knowledge.

“I definitely hope that it’s somewhere where people can come and feel like it’s a safe space for them to explore the depths of emotion, self healing, expansion, that sort of stuff that these practices can bring.

“There’s something about the hills that’s magical.”

Monbulk schools receive funds for inclusive education 23 government schools in the Monbulk electorate will receive further funding for accessible and inclusive programs for students under disability support reforms.

Monbulk MP and Minister for Education James Merlino announced the funding for the implementation of school practices supporting inclusive education of students with disabilities and diverse learning needs.

“Every Victorian kid deserves the chance to learn and thrive at school, no matter their abilities, which is why we’re boosting funding to make schools more inclusive,” he said.

“The funding is the biggest change in disability support Victorian schools have ever seen, enabling schools in Monbulk to support more students with disability, so that they can get the great education they deserve.”

Funding can be used for initiatives including professional development for faculty, employing new disability and inclusion staff, and purchasing programs, equipment or technology.

The schools receiving the funding are in the second year of a five-year rollout of the disability inclusion package, a $1.6 billion investment in the 2020/21 Victorian

budget for children living with disabilities.

The package will be progressively rolled out, with all government schools receiving funding by 2025.

The 23 schools in Monbulk received funding totalling $2.5 million, with 119 outer east Melbourne schools receiving funding of over $14.8 million.

A bigger Chestnut Festival in 2022

By Parker McKenzie The Kalorama Chestnut Festival is returning in 2022 bigger than ever, with Mt Dandenong Primary School joining Mt Dandenong Kindergarten in hosting the event.

The 100 per cent volunteer-run festival will see a diverse range of stalls showcasing locally made handcrafts and produce, roasted chestnuts, food stalls and more on Sunday 1 May at Kalorama Memorial Reserve.

The event started with parents selling chestnuts out of brown paper bags to raise funds for the kindergarten and has now become a loved family outing for locals and tourists alike.

Kalorama Chestnut Festival committee member Mariana Job said the festival has been running for over 30 years as a fundraiser for the kindergarten, and it is significant this year

because it was damaged in the storms in 2021.

“You can still drive past it and it’s surrounded by fencing, they are working out of a temporary space in Olinda Primary School,” she said.

“We really need to rebuild and repair, so much was damaged.”

Ms Job said there would be plenty of entertainment and activities to do at this year’s event.

“This year, we’ve also locked in a chainsaw artist,” she said.

“This chainsaw artist is going to work with one of the trees on-site that fell last year — a chestnut tree — and is going to make sculptures, which will be auctioned off at the festival at the end of the day.”

This year, the festival will have two new chestnut roasters thanks to local businesses and a storm recovery grant from Emerald Ro-

tary, with the roasters being built locally.

Ms Job said the support of local businesses and the community, in conjunction with the partnership with Mt Dandenong Primary School, will make the 2022 Festival the biggest one yet.

“Their support has actually been overwhelming, everyone that we’ve reached out to has offered what we’ve asked and more to be honest,” she said.

“We’ve never had so many sponsors, which is really nice after what happened last year. It just feels like a really strong community, we’re a lot closer than we were before the storms.”

Kalorama was one of the areas worst affected by the June 2021 storm weather event and both Mt Dandenong Kindergarten and Mt Dandenong Primary School had their buildings damaged, with some repairs still ongoing.

Join the Old Time Tecoma Get Together

By Parker McKenzie An event for senior members of the community to reconnect, share memories and enjoy each other’s company will be held in Tecoma on Sunday 15 May. The Old Time Get Together at Tecoma Primary School is a social community event where people can discuss past times, with a collage of photos of Tecoma, Upwey and Belgrave being shown by the Southern Foothills Historical Society.

Organiser Marion Preston said restrictions have made the past few years difficult for seniors members of the community.

“It is not a school reunion, it is an event for the people of the locality to return to their roots, reconnect and recall their happy days living in Tecoma,” she said.

“The gathering was set for March 2020, but lockdown put an end to it.”

Ms Preston said the idea came about at the wake of her friend Jean Speedie, who passed away in December 2019 at age 101.

“Jean’s funeral was a big deal being the daughter of pioneers throughout the Dandenong Ranges. Friends and relatives travelled large distances to pay their respect,” she said.

“During refreshments, all the young-looking oldies — and they were looking very spiffy — were animated and enthusiastic in recalling their early days living in the hills. It was like a gathering of the clans, “Listening to their conversation, three likemailcommunity.com.au

One of Belgrave’s biggest markets was the brainchild of one woman nearly a decade ago.

Dee Appleton said she decided to make her own local market nine years ago while she was looking for a way to make money as a stay-at-home mother.

“I started making clothes and doing markets myself, before realising that there were none that felt right to me,” she said.

“We started with maybe 30 stalls and the most we can fit in at the minute is 120.”

The Belgrave Big Dreams Market on Sunday 10 April is fully booked out, with all 120 spots taken by stalls.

She said it took a few years to establish the market as a destination for locals and visitors alike.

“Over the years it has taken a lot of work,” she said.

“We get people from all over the city, it’s not just locals.”

Running from 9am to 2pm on the second Sunday of every month, the craft, produce and design market has become an established part of the township.

Ms Appleton said the market features a wide array of activities, wares and food for people to enjoy.

“The stallholders often make or design the products themselves,” she said.

“There is often kid’s entertainment; we just had a workshop from Curbside Carnies for the day.”

Organic bread, jams, produce, ceramics, jewellery, body care products, food and gardening are some of the wares stallholders sell at the market.

Ms Appleton said enthusiasm for the market has stayed strong after Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions.

“I love the gathering of people, it is just beautiful,” she said.

“It is a wonderful day out in the open and there is plenty to see in the surrounding area. You can drive up the mountain, go to local cafes and there is nothing quite like the atmosphere up in the hills, it’s a very special place.”

The market takes place at St Thomas More Primary School, Reynolds Lane, Belgrave.

Celebrating first birthday

By Michael Alexander 12 Months on since I re-opened the Dry-cleaning shop in MONBULK, after having moved up the road from BELGRAVE….. and WOW….. and what support I have received in the first 356 days.

Not only have the Monbulk folk embraced the service again, but many of my Belgrave

stalwarts are venturing up here as well…This has a natural flow on affect for the other shops in the precinct……so we hope we are doing our bit to share the love.

Its wonderful being opposite the park, and watching many enjoying their lunchtime festive board, amongst the trees. The market that happens occasionally sure brings the other side of the street to life on Saturday mornings.

The new signage on the facia has resurrected the “little man” behind the press…he’s getting pretty steamed up on the hot days. Some reckon he looks like me…….I dunno about that?????

WE are now referred to as MONBULK DRYCLEANERS, rather than the old name (Neat n Clean)…I would rather identify with the township, as against run with some dreamt up clique for a name.

All up, this past 12 months has flashed by and I am starting to feel very much part of the community.

Kalorama local survives

By Parker McKenzie When Kalorama local Mark Wales won the ninth season of Australian Survivor on his second attempt, he was surprised to have taken out the $500,000 prize.

“Obviously it’s pretty surreal. I just wasn’t expecting it and wasn’t used to that sort of attention and winning. It’s been really good fun,” Mr Wales.

“I feel like going in a second time, I began with a much clearer strategy. I had a much better idea of what to expect.”

After meeting his future wife Sam Gash while competing in Samoa on the second season of the show in 2017, the couple returned for Survivor: Blood and Water, where each competitor was paired with a loved one.

Mr Wales said competing in Queensland compared to Samoa was a totally different environment and experience.

“In Samoa, it rained for the first three weeks heavily day and night. You couldn’t sleep, I lost five kilos in the first week,” he said.

“In Australia, it was really hot and dryer, but at night time you could actually sleep and that

Mr Wales beat out 23 other competitors — including his wife — in Charters Towers, located in rural Queensland, to be named the sole Survivor.

After being unanimously voted the winner in

the final tribal council, Mr Wales paid tribute to his fellow competitors.

“That actually was a really big surprise because the girls also played well. Chrissy played a really good strategic game. Shay had a really good physical game,” he said.

“They outperformed me in their own field,

so I was really happy to get the win and even more surprised by the final vote.”

The couple currently lives in Kalorama with their son Harry and were married in Monbulk in 2019.

Mr Wales said the reaction from locals has been positive.

“When we go to the shops and Mt Evelyn and Lilydale, people stop and chat,” he said.

They want to know about the show, and ask questions about different characters. I really like it. It’s fun.”

Mr Wales, who spent 17 years in the military and has worked in the corporate sector and academics, said Survivor “is a good parable for life.”

“People go into Survivor not knowing whether they’re capable of doing things, taking risks or pushing themselves,” he said.

“People are always surprised by what they end up achieving when they actually apply themselves to it, “It’s a good kind of lesson for everyone, don’t be afraid to push yourself a take a risk, you’ll be surprised at what you might be able to do.”

Despite no longer facing extradition to Sweden, Mr Assange was charged by the United States under the espionage act after his asylum was revoked. He is currently fighting his extradition to the United States in the British courts.

Mr Shipton said in the past decade, support for Mr Assange has grown among the public and the Australian Government.

“In 2013 there was just Andrew Wilkie and Peter Whish-Wilson supporting, now there are 29 other parliamentarians in the Assange group in federal parliament, giving you an in-

dication of the constant growth,” he said.

“As well the leader of the opposition Anthony Albanese said in a caucus that enough is enough and the Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce when he was in Washington said Assange must be freed.”

Mr Shipton said if Mr Assange’s appeals are rejected, the average time for appeals and sentencing will mean he will have spent 27 years in arbitrary detention or detained before he can serve out a sentence in Australia.

“It looks like two or three more years of court cases in the United Kingdom. Julian’s defence has applied for another court case, an appeal, a decision on that is coming,” he said.

“If the decision is in the negative for Ju-

lian, he will go to the European Court of Human Rights. That will be fought over a period of two years.”

Mr Assange “went to a lot of schools” throughout his childhood and teenage years, and spent two terms at Monbulk High School.

Mr Shipton said many people in the hills are both supportive and curious about Mr Assange because he spent time in the Dandenong Ranges as a teenager.

“People are concerned for Julian’s wellbeing because he’s an Australian and did some really earth-shattering things, so the public could understand what governments do, what the United States has done and what war crimes are committed,” he said.

“Thank you for the support people give and for the long memory, treasuring the time Julian spent here in the hills.”

As the screening of the documentary ITHAKA at Cameo Cinema in Belgrave approaches, John Shipton — the father of Julian Assange — spoke to the Star Mail about his son’s extradition case and health, the making of the documentary and Mr Assange’s brief time spent at Monbulk High School.

The documentary, directed by Ben Lawrence, was filmed over two years in Europe and the United States, as Mr Assange continues to fight to prevent being extradited to the United States on espionage charges. It will screen at Cameo Cinema on 17 April, followed by a question and answer session with Mr Shipton.

77-year-old Mr Shipton said he returned from the United Kingdom in late March after visiting Belmarsh Prison to witness Mr Assange’s wedding.

“Julian isn’t doing the best, but he’s very happy to put his life and his family’s life in good order by getting married,” he said.

“He’s entering his 14th year of arbitrary detention on the day after Palm Sunday.”

Through his organisation Wikileaks, Mr Assange published a series of leaks provided by a United States intelligence analyst in 2010, revealing the United States had killed civilians in unreported incidents throughout the Afghanistan War. Sweden issued an international arrest warrant for Mr Assange over allegations of sexual misconduct in November 2010 and after losing his extradition appeal, Mr Assange

Exhibit makes its return

By Parker McKenzie Sherbrooke Art Societies’ Streeton, Roberts and McCubbin Awards Exhibition will be held over a two-month period, featuring around 70 artists exhibiting over 140 works of art.

From Saturday 30 April to Saturday 25 June, the Art Society will have the artwork on display at the Sherbrooke Art Gallery, where visitors can view the range of oil, acrylic, pastel and watercolour paintings.

Exhibition coordinator Leanne Vassallo said the artists with the best works will receive a monetary award, which does not need to be copies of Streeton, Roberts or McCubbin’s art.

“The Arthur Streeton Award is for the best landscape, it’s been going for some time now, and the winner receives a $1000 prize,” she said.

“Another $1,000 prize is the Tom Roberts award for the best non-landscape and then there is also the Frederick McCubbin award for the best small painting, which is a $500 prize.”

This year’s exhibition is the 52nd year of the annual event, with entry remaining free. Entries of artwork close on 15 April.

Ms Vassalo said the history of art in the area would also be highlighted throughout the twomonth period.

“We are interviewing the great-granddaughter of Tom Roberts for a talk,” she said.

“We are also in talks with the historical society of Monbulk on the history of the arts throughout the hills.”

The 2022 Streeton, Roberts and McCubbin Awards Exhibition will be the first held in over two years because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ms Vassalo said art from around Australia would feature in the exhibition.

“We’ve received entries from Tasmania and also from Queensland,” she said.

“People send in art from all over the place.”

The Sherbrooke Art Society was established in 1966 by local artist Jack Montgomery, to provide opportunities to professional artists through meeting and collaborating with each other.

Both the Sherbrooke Art Society and the gallery are run by volunteers. The Gallery is located at 62 Monbulk Road, Belgrave.

Soul searching the universe within

By Tyler Wright The Yarra Valley Gallery & Arts Hub (YAVA) launched a new exhibition last night, showcasing the work of locals Jessica Harris and Amanda Ruck.

Their works have been combined to form ‘The Universe Within’ an exhibit inviting viewers to connect to their own internal feelings and emotions through art.

Jessica’s tiny collages are mixed-media works and are part of a mural, representing the large emotions we tend to compress inside ourselves yet form such a significant part of our lives.

Whereas Amanda’s acrylic works are on large canvases and are paired with a ‘familiar’ an object that inspired the painting.

“It was matching up their philosophies in a way that would compliment each other,” Gallery Manager and curator Dakini Maddock said.

“They might be very different work, but it makes it a more dynamic and interesting exhibition.”

Amanda is a landscape painter, cloud painter on canvas and wood panels.

“I work to very beautiful, big, ignited blue skies, but I often tend to work at [sunset],” Amanda said.

“Nature continuously inspires me.”

And you can see that in the clouds and trees of her paintings, often with what she calls a sense of “hope” in the horizon created by a particular colour like naples yellow.

“I just wanted to put together a show that everyone could engage with in terms of their emotions.

“Sometimes the inspiration is really obvious, like a color or the light. Sometimes it’s a little less obvious and kind of travels a little bit deeper.”

Jessica Harris’ works are reactions to events happening in her life and her feelings, as she started creating tiny art during 2021’s lockdown.

“I wanted to do a lot, so I thought bringing them down small would be more practical and more of an introspective look,” Jessica said.

The artist and educator will be holding a ‘Repetitive Lines and Patterns’ workshop on Saturday 16 and Saturday 23 April in the Margaret Lawrence studio at YAVA from 10am to noon.

“It’ll be a mindfulness type session, using the lines to just relax and take some time out.”

Dakini will also be holding guided meditations with breathing exercises one day a week throughout the exhibition, choosing a different work from both Jessica and Amanda’s collection each time for participants to focus on.

“It’s about grounding and coming back to the present moment and having a bit of a rest.

It’s self care for people, but in a beautiful environment with beautiful artworks.”

and guided meditation is something Dakini is attempting to implement in the future after obtaining feedback from a group of young mentees at YAVA. “I’ve seen how that’s worked in other galleries, especially in Europe” she said. “[We are] trying to meet people on those different levels.”

A gold coin donation box is at the gallery upon entry, and the exhibit will be running from now until 1 May with doors open between 10am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday.

Guided meditations will run on Wednesday 13, 20 and 27 April from 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

Exciting opportunity Here’s an opportunity to see your pictures in the paper - Have you heard about the board game about the treasures of Yarra Ranges Shire?

It is the brainchild of artist and writer, Jenni Ivins, who is engaging communities in conversations on Facebook about the things we value and what to see and do here.

The game will be published in May in all Star Mail papers, covering the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

The game board will be based on a map of the shire and GO-TO cards will direct players from town to town in the game.

“Exciting news!” Ms Ivins said.

“I have selected an amazing photo to go on the GO-TO side of all the cards.

The image was taken by Tracy de, whose photography has been widely appreciated by many people in local Facebook groups. It shows a kangaroo hopping before a setting sun.”

The front of the cards will have photos taken by people who have a connection to the shire in some way, like working, living, studying or playing here.

Learning your creativity

By Tyler Wright Cockatoo Community House will continue their free ten week ‘Creative Kindness’ course in Term 2.

The classes run every week as attendees learn a new art technique and create affirmation cards which will be gifted to the community.

The program, supported by TaskForce, will be taking a break over the Easter holidays and sessions will resume from Monday 2 May.

Jess Measor has been running the course since last June, though the course has run prior.

Visitors can take these cards to keep, give to someone else or leave it somewhere in the community as a random act of kindness.

Emerald Museum will be holding the Australian Heritage Festival on Wednesday 20 April with free kids’s activities for families to get involved in.

The activities available will include morning tea in Nobelius Heritage Park, colouring in and scavenger hunting.

Children have the chance to guess the number of lollies in a jar, and the nearest guess wins the lollies.

Cardinia Shire Residents will be able to learn about the history of Emerald, chat to museum volunteers and visit the Salvia Gardens plant stall.

Emerald Museum is an exhibition space for a wide range of items that relate to the history of the former Nobelius & Sons Nursery as well as Emerald and surrounding districts.

Nobelius Heritage Park is a 12-acre remnant of the Nobelius and Sons Nursery which operated between 1886 and 1955 and is registered on the Victorian Heritage Database as a site of State significance.

The Australian Heritage Festival will run on Wednesday 20 April from 10am to 3pm.

The event will be run in line with COVID-19 restrictions.

By Eleanor Wilson Orchards at the Montague Fruit Farm were bustling with families over the weekend, in celebration of its Apple Harvest Festival.

The festival was held over two days, filling the Narre Warren North orchard with family friendly activities including food stalls, live music, yoga and pilates, and of course fruit picking.

Montague marketing manager Angela Bracken called the festival “a celebration of the autumn season and the local community.”

“The apple harvest festival received an overwhelming positive response and was a huge success despite the wet weather conditions,” she said.

“It was fantastic to see the community enjoying the pick your own fruit tours, activities and sampling new season fruit.”

A third-generation family business founded

locally in 1948, Montague exclusively produces some of Australia’s favourite apple varieties, including JAZZ and envy.

The harvest festival serves as a timely reminder that the apple picking period is upon us, with December to May marked as peak picking season.

Ms Bracken said Montague’s ‘pick your own tours’ are a great family activity for the autumn months.

“The tours are run at the Little Orchard which is home to 2000 trees, where people can learn about where their fruit comes from, how it is grown and of course take home handpicked fruit to enjoy,” she said.

The festival was held at Montague’s Narre Warren North facility, which has undergone a $66 million development over the past five years to implement state of the art processes and consumer friendly services.

Ways forward after Covid ‘Long Covid’ or its first variant ‘Omicron’, or its latest variant, ‘BA.2’, have added to our struggles with the entrails of all we has gone through in the last two years.

Long Covid seems to be the result of the struggle itself, given that the second anniversary of Covid’s landing was on the 24th of Feb this year.

Sadly the deaths and the daily stats along the way have left the average person in a state of confusion and uncertainty.

Unless we have been touched personally, it is hard to comprehend the terrible losses and grief thousands have gone through, and for many, are still experiencing it.

On top of that, the mass indiscriminant slaughter and displacement of millions in The Ukraine, is to us, inconceivable.

That war, and the floods in our north, drive a deeper despondency So what are these life traumas doing to us?

I observe in our communities a lack of hope, a despondency, a growing divide between the

haves and the have-nots, and a lot of the issues cropping up again that we dealt with in our previous lock downs – rising alcohol consumption, relationship breakdowns and domestic violence is on the rise again, and the level on depression in our young people has blown right out.

Counselling centers are quoting up to 8 weeks to see clients.

So how can we even start to address these ills?

There are efforts being made, like offering free ‘Second Bite’ food for those in need. One venue near me which opens at 10am on a Friday

has most of its food taken by 9-45.

Another delivers many food hampers per week to the homes of the needy.

Then in most of our villages, sports clubs are thriving – a healthy balanced place for our young.

Another way to help, if you have a little more cash than most, is to try paying it forward by covering a food bill, or part - maybe when we see someone struggling to meet the total at the cashier in the supermarket.

The influx of coffee vans in our towns, offer great places for a chat, and if we are so wired, a friendship built there may even change a life and give us something worthwhile to do.

As Chaplain to Community I see many positive outcomes through a solid grounded faith in a God who promises life essentials like love, peace, security, hope, care, significance and purpose.

Although Covid has virtually closed the doors of smaller, older churches, people from all walks of life and various denominations

meet together in the church I attend. The place is full.

I believe people are looking for that rock/ the anchor that a faith in God brings, and a relationship with others who are seeking friendship and nurture as well.

Most Sundays at the above mentioned church people loiter over a cuppa and cake for up to three quarters of an hour after the main service finishes.

One thing that encourages me is that the Football/Netball Club where I was chaplain wants me to continue to read out a prayer over the Club at the start of each season. At the start of Covid I wrote one for protection from it – two years on, no Covid - 100 players and 100s of members.

There is hope to be found and friendships to be enjoyed if we lift our eyes to see who we could encourage and be encouraged by.

Crime thriller worthy read Film a mediocre sandwich: poor filling, great bread

A review of Magnus Nights; The Helios Incident by Bryn Smith Magnus Nights: The Helios Incident, written by Bryn Smith and published in 2021, is the first of a series of political crime thrillers set in the futuristic city of Magnus.

Like many dystopian novels, it tells a tale of two parallel cities, with Magnus being the skycity where welfare and security is preserved. Those less fortunate in the undercity are left to struggle on their own or resort to crime.

But issues of social and economic inequality are only the backdrop. Likewise, sci-fi elements such as holography, plasma weaponry, wearable computing and communication devices and drone technology are generously deployed to help illustrate conflicts among prominent forces and their impact on the innocent and vulnerable.

So it comes down to the plot, the classic “whodunit and why” that generates much suspense, tension and excitement in all good crime thrillers. In this regard, the author has successfully hidden the identity of the criminal mastermind until the very end.

Another universal trope in the book is the “old cop, young cop” combination, as DS Augustine and DC Craddock of the police’s Taskforce Bloodhound race against time to find the source of powerful weapons that gangsters use to incinerate their enemies.

While the backstories of both detectives are lightly addressed, much attention is paid to Augustine’s hard-earned wisdom and Craddock’s instinctive (re)actions that are crucial in solving crimes. Both men are highly likeable, their dialogues revealing and humorous.

Other characters have their shadowy pasts and hidden motives. All questions are sufficiently answered in the end, with much pleasure remaining in the hunt for clues.

As the old Chinese saying goes, “the mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the

FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN bird stalking him”. The relentless pursuit, near captures and repeated escapes is what makes the story entertaining.

The author’s strength lies in the depiction of large-scale chaos. The power of the plasma guns is impressively displayed, the vivid details of the resulting mayhem and destruction both fascinating and terrifying.

Such deadly weapons cannot be allowed to fall into wrong hands, but who is to determine whose hands are eligible and righteous? This is an issue subtly raised in the book for readers to ponder upon.

Meanwhile, the author’s background in technology and as a combat engineer in the Army Reserves helps in building a technologically advanced megacity. Think of Philip K. Dick’s “The Minority Report”, Max Brooks’s World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War and even the animated TV series Arcane that is set in the League of Legends fictional universe – Smith’s Magnus Nights deserves to be brought to the big screen to showcase the madness of its metropolis.

Before that happens, sit back and enjoy the conspiracies and power struggles in Magnus, a microcosm of our current world that is at risk of being eroded by greed and violence. Disclaimer: This review is based on a print copy of the book provided by Brisbane-based Hawkeye Publishing for free in the hope that this reviewer would provide an honest, unbiased critique.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore Starring Eddie Redmayne, Jude Law and Mads Mikkelsen Rated M 3.5/5 Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore is an exciting and frequently charming magical thriller with a saggy middle.

In the 1930s, a group of witches and wizards, led by Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law), must stop the tyrant Grindelwald (Mads Mikkelsen) from becoming leader of the global magical community.

The previous Fantastic Beasts films had trouble integrating their titular beasts with the magical conflicts, but The Secrets of Dumbledore does a good job of balancing its magical animals with wizarding intrigue. Said animals provide some exciting set-pieces, including a tense but amusing prison escape, and the protection and delivery of a particular creature is an integral plot-thread.

However, Supreme Head Vogel (Oliver Masucci) stresses the importance of the magical community choosing their new leader, but having a magical animal pick the new leader contradicts this democratic message.

The cast still has fantastic chemistry, Mikkelsen gives the third and best portrayal of Grindelwald in the series, and Dan Fogler

remains an endearing source of comic relief and pathos as Jake Kowalski. The plot subtly explores Jake’s estrangement from his lover Queenie (Alison Sudol) and Dumbledore’s conflicted bond with Grindelwald, and the third act is a compelling, beautiful culmination of whimsical cunning.

And yet the second act, while fun overall, feels meandering and disjointed. The explicit assertion that the plan is no plan feels like a sneaky cover for lazy writing, and the new insights into the redundant Credence’s (Ezra Miller) identity feel as halfhearted as last time.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, which is playing at most Victorian cinemas, is engrossing, touching and funny, despite a flabby middle and confused views on democracy.

Garside takes title From just the boy who was born in Ferntree Gully to an Olympian and now an Australian lightweight titleholder, Harry Garside has made headlines for his second professional boxing bout success.

In the 10 round fight against Manuer Matet in Sydney on Wednesday 6 April, Garside dominated his opponent with a unanimous decision from the judges, taking him to 2 and 0 in his professional career.

Early in the fight, Garside was able to hit big and clean, using his body and fast movements to overpower Matet’s shots.

Although taller of the two, Matet’s punches and style of hitting was uncontrolled, proving Garside as the better boxer for his precision, accuracy and ability to move around the ring gracefully.

While the crowd could see Garside’s impeccable performance, the 24-yearold commented after the bout on his need to improve and to head back to the gym, a look into his character as he climbs the boxing ladder.

“I’m always a massive critic,” Garside said.

“That was a terrible performance and I’m always looking to grow, always looking to be the best version of myself.

“I’m going to go back to the gym, watch that fight back and there’s always room for improvement.”

Although the longest fight he has had in his boxing experience, Garside did not take a seat throughout the entire time in the ring, another point of difference in the young fighter’s playbook.

“I know this is the longest fight I’ve ever had, but I’ve never understood sitting down,” he said.

“You never sit down when you spar – most boxers don’t – and I think when you sit down your mind tells you that you’re about to stop.”

At full time the judges scored Garside 98-92, 99-91, 98-92.

Monbulk Bowler wins singles final Jenny Holmes, winner of the Monbulk women’s singles final progressed to the Eastern Region Champion of Champions event where she went all the way and was crowned the champion.

Jenny played well throughout the preliminary rounds beating some highly respected bowlers.

In the first round Jenny had a bye and then she defeated Barbara Keenan from Bayswater 25 to 19 in round 2.

In the quarter final she was too good for Annette Schutt from Boronia winning 25 to 18.

Jenny then played the highly rated Trish Cullinane from Heathmont in the semi final winning, 25 to 14.

In the final Jenny played against Lyn Cameron from the Mooroolbark Bowling Club. She started well and opened up a three shot lead after 3 ends.

Lyn then levelled the scores on the next end and it looked like being a tight contest. By the seventh end Jenny had edged ahead by two shots and then she won the next four ends to open up a lead of 7 shots.

Jenny bowled superbly, end after end rarely making a mistake. She won 7 of the last 10 ends to win by 16 shots, 26 to 10.

Jenny will now progress to the State Championship which will start in Bendigo on 4 May. 30 MAIL

Whopping win for Olinda women Olinda Football Club’s women’s team celebrated their first ever twilight game at home on Saturday night with a 153-0 win against Seville.

Olinda kicked 5 goals in every quarter in an even performance.

Chelsea Wilson was dominant in the ruck all night, not only winning every tap, but regularly winning contested ball and delivering quality entries into the forward line.

Phoebe Dixon and Ella Smith in her last game for the year roamed the forward line in the first half, peppering the goals, both finishing with 3 and 4 goals respectively.

The game marked the debut of Junior Club stalwart Grace Belloni, and it was a debut for the ages. Grace, only 15 years old, controlled half back and midfield, and continually repelled entries and drove the ball forward will precise skill.

Grace capped off the performance with 3 goals. Amalija Kostich’s 5 goals on the half-forward flank had everything; pack marks, leading marks crumbing goals and running goals.

It was a complete performance as a mid-sized forward.

Kiah Burgess burst through packs and pumped the ball forward, kicking 2 goals.

The second half saw some positional changes, and regular back Kim Smith was placed forward for her first ever goal.

Maddy Mccheyne snuck forward and took the best pack mark of the night at the top of the square.

Mentio to Olinda’s midfield, Captain Maddie Collins, Claire Hyett, and Kylie Verbakel, who won every contested ball in the centre and built the defensive wall which locked the ball into Olinda’s forward line for most of the night.

The Junior Club was spread throughout the hills and valleys on Sunday with early games at Upwey and Healesville, games at Mt Evelyn, Emerald, Wesburn and then back to finish off at Healesville. Low numbers with school holidays and COVID protocols seemed to be the order of the day for all clubs.

It was a mixed day for results. The U13 boys met Mt Evelyn competition. The team’s numbers were down for the day and with an early injury to one of the only upper age boys available and the club was beaten.

Olinda Football Club’s U16 girls were down in numbers with key position players not available against Healesville Football Club who were also down on numbers. The heat and a steady stream of injuries made it tough in the first half but they regrouped.

The U15 and U17 boys at Olinda Football Club won against Wesburn and Emerald respectively.

The U17s have some inclusions this year and with returning players next round. Olinda Football Club’s U15s will have low numbers this year, Olinda Football Club’s U12 Girls played against Upwey and their numbers are growing every week. The U11s also played at Upwey, and with low numbers secured a win against Upwey and the U10s at Healesville scored freely along with the opposing side.

Close loss for U19s and five goal netty win Premier Division 2022 Round 1 The Senior and Reserve footballers began the season with a bye after a promising pre-season with practice matches against GembrookCockatoo and Kilcunda-Bass. They will play their first games in Round 2 after Easter on 23 April.

The U19s played on Friday night at Emerald and went down narrowly by 2 points after having all the play in the last 6-7 minutes but were unable to break through for the much needed goal.

The Senior Women’s football team played their first match this week after having to forfeit in the opening round last week. They travelled up to Thornton and, despite only having 14 players, were able to secure their first win since 2019, coincidentally against the team they beat for their last win in the 2019 Preliminary Final. after that they were unable to find another goal but had done enough to eventually run out comfortable winners by 17 points.

The netball ladies travelled to Beaconsfield for their first matches in the Premier Division of Outer East. This was the first time that the Hawks had met the Eagles in competition matches.

Monbulk Netball Club’s C Grade started a little slowly and trailed by 3 goals at quarter time. A 9 goal to 4 second term had the Hawks edge in front by half time and they gradually extended their lead to run out comfortable 5 goal winners in a confidence building victory.

The A Grade at Monbulk Netball Club burst out of the blocks and established a 5 goal lead by the first change. The margin hovered in this region until late in the third term when Beaconsfield reduced the lead to just 3. The Eagles continued their attack in the last and got to a 1 goal lead before the Hawks regrouped with some positional changes and steadied for a good win by 4 goals.

Round 2 will be at Monbulk on 23 April against Narre Warren with the footballers playing in their traditional slots of 10:20am for the U19s, Reserves 12:10pm and Seniors 2:10pm.

The Netballers will play at 12:30pm, 1:35pm and 3:00pm respectively. The fixture for the Women’s football will be reworked as one team appears to have dropped out and still needs to be confirmed going forward.

Terry Miller from Terry Miller Concrete Tanks has been in the concrete tank building business for nearly 30 years. Being from country Victoria himself, Terry realises the importance of good water storage systems.

Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because our tanks have 130mm walls and a 300mm base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days of curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa. And each tank is poured individually on site. These tanks come out white, which is a sign of the strength in the tanks. The MPA is a measure of how much concrete there is as parts per 1000. The walls of the tank are vibrated all around to ensure that there are no air bubbles and that the concrete is compacted down. Terry generally builds tanks in three sizes, 50,000, 105,000 and 120,000 either with a silo (metal) roof, concrete top or open top tanks.

The tanks will not blow away or fall apart, and this is particularly important in areas where there is high wind, or in fire prone districts. In the event of a fire, a large tank (120,000 litres) can supply water back up to the main house. By setting up a petrol powered generator and pumping water up onto the house directly, via a reverse water sprinkler system, you will keep your home cool and wet. Or if need be, you can jump into the tank to keep cool and be protected from flames and radiant heat.
