Explore all the wonders Though Cardinia Shire residents are undoubtedly aware of the many perks and benefits of living in the region, this feature showcases the best aspects of life in Cardinia Shire, from the its natural wonders and the myriad of tourist attractions to the great education options, local businesses and industries that provide local employment, the leisure and sporting options and the area’s growing retail and entertainment sectors.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics over 130,000 people called Cardinia Shire home in 2022. That number is forecast to hit 200,238 by 2041, a staggering increase.

There were 33,220 local jobs in 2022, with the largest number of people being employed in education and training at 4,473. Other main employers are construction at 4,145, retail trade at 3,657 and agriculture, forestry and fishing at 3,098.

Many of the businesses are locally owned.

In 2021 there were 9,559 businesses in the Shire of Cardinia and the Gross Regional Production in 2021 was $4.43 billion.

One of the fastest growing sectors of the local economy is tourism.

TOURISM Cardinia Shire offers wineries, potteries, restaurants, cafes, working farms, adventure playgrounds and iconic tourist attractions like Puffing Billy, Emerald Lake Park and Gumbuya World.

Cardinia Shire is an easy day trip for people living in the vast majority of Melbourne’s suburbs.

The reestablishment of Gumbuya World in 2016 produced a surge of tourists flocking down the Princes Highway with the kids loaded in the car.

Tourists are also drawn to the northern part of the municipality, affectionately coined ‘The Hills’ by locals, including the villages of Emerald, Gembrook, Cockatoo and Upper Beaconsfield. This area sits at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges and offers tourists attractions such as Puffing Billy, Cardinia Reservoir, Bunyip State Park and Emerald Lake Park.

The shire’s central area includes the towns of Beaconsfield, Pakenham and Officer, and also includes the railway towns of Nar Nar Goon, Tynong, Garfield and Bunyip.

These areas are home to easily accessible restaurants, old style country pubs, shopping and new sporting venues. They mark the divide between town and country that Cardinia Shire does so well.

The southern coast area includes world acclaimed RAMSAR wetlands, the townships of Kooweerup and Lang Lang and further afield Pearcedale and Tooradin. This area is especially rich in asparagus growing, supplying most of Australia’s asparagus crop and there are several working farms that attract tourists from home and abroad.

EDUCATION Cardinia Shire has a network of great education options that includes private schools such as St Clare’s Primary School at Officer, St Francis Xavier, Beaconhills, Chairo Christian School and Lakeside College.

The shire’s government schools include Pakenham Hills Primary School, Cardinia Primary School, Pakenham Primary School, Pakenham Consolidated, Bridgewood Primary School and Pakenham Springs.

There are also numerous Catholic Primary Schools including St Patrick’s, St James and Columba Primary at Bunyip. State-run high schools in Pakenham, Kooweerup, Officer and Emerald are also preparing young people for the future.

For those students struggling in mainstream education, Pakenham’s ECG College gives students a second chance at education, focusing on their wellbeing and welfare. ECG College offers VCAL qualifications and classes are hands-on with students doing rather than theory.

The shire is also lucky to have Officer Specialist School, which is a purpose-built school providing educational programs for students with mild to severe intellectual and associated disabilities.

REAL ESTATE The corridor from Beaconsfield through to Pakenham has seen an explosion of building activity in the past decade as former farmland has been transformed into planned communities such as Timbertop, Heritage Springs, Lakeside and Cardinia Lakes.

The shire’s building boom is set to continue in coming years when the huge Pakenham East development comes online. The development area comprises approximately 630 hectares bounded by Princes Freeway to the south, Mount Ararat Road to the north and south to the east, and Deep Creek and Ryan Road to the west.

Local developer Parklea is playing a huge role in Pakenham East with its Ridgelea Estate, a self-sustaining community with plenty of local facilities and open space. Pakenham East is expected to become home to over 9,000 residents and hold approximately 3000 residential lots.

Residents will also be provided with a town centre, convenience centre, sporting reserves and recreation centre, a government primary school, a non-government primary school, a

government secondary school, parks and waterways, and a Lifestyle Village.

HEALTH Residents are serviced by a network of healthcare providers led by general practitioners and allied health professionals such as radiologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, psychologists, audiologists and podiatrists.

Kooweerup is the only town within the shire that has a hospital. First opening its doors as a bush nursing hospital on 11 April 1921, Kooweerup Hospital staff provide round-theclock medical services on the large hospital site as well as district nursing in and around the community.

SPORT Cardinia Shire has long been a hub of sporting activity in Melbourne’s south-east.

Its football and netball clubs - including the likes of Beaconsfield, Officer, Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon, Kooweerup, Garfield and Bunyip - have long fought ferocious battles in their respective leagues, with some of the best playing talent around stemming from those clubs.

AFL Outer East and the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition draw bumper crowds on a weekly basis as the Cardinia-based clubs compete with those throughout Casey

and, in the case of West Gippsland, right down to tourist hotspots Inverloch and Phillip Island.

Pakenham is one of AFL Outer East’s biggest clubs, and its proud history of premiership wins spans through the generations.

Though Kooweerup in West Gippsland hasn’t won a senior football premiership in decades, the Demons’ faithful are hungry for their next glory days following the Melbourne Football Club’s 2021 Premiership win.

On the cricket field - in the West Gippsland Cricket Association - powerhouse clubs Pakenham and Kooweerup cruised through the 2021/2022 season, with both teams going down in the semi finals.

Cardinia Cricket Club vs Tooradin March 26 Pakenham Racing Club’s showpiece venue, Racing.com Park in Tynong, is not only the home of local racing, but has forged a reputation as one of the best facilities in the country. Some of Australia’s leading trainers have already relocated their stables to the Tynong facility.

On the basketball and netball courts of Pakenham’s Cardinia Life stadium, players of all ages and abilities put their all into the nightly competitions; while other indoor sports such as floorball also take pride of place within the shire.

Cardinia also has a number of hugely-popular bowls and golf clubs that many throughout the region proudly call their sporting home.

THE FUTURE The future looks bright for the growing shire as new road, school and level crossing removal projects progress over the next few years.

Meanwhile, in the growth areas of Pakenham and Officer, congestion busting projects are well underway, with the removal of the Cardinia Road level crossing completed in late 2020.

Level crossings at McGregor Road, Main Street and Racecourse Road in Pakenham will be replaced with a rail over road design, expected to be completed in 2024, while level crossings at Brunt Road and Station Street in Beaconsfield are expected to be removed by 2025.

FOCUS ON … SHOWCASING CARDINIA And the future is also looking green, as Cardinia Shire Council is a part of a group of 30 councils in Melbourne as a landmark collective tender to build a waste-to-energy facility at a yet-to-be-decided location. The initiative will see nearly one million tonnes of Melbourne’s household waste managed to reduce landfill and increase resource recovery.

After six years of waiting, the Cockatoo BMX Pump Track at Alma Treloar Reserve officially opened on Saturday 21 March 2020. The BMX track was just one of the projects to be completed as part of the Alma Treloar masterplan.

An upgraded off-leash dog area in the reserve features an enclosed area with temporary agility equipment which can be to moved to make way for circus tents and community events.

Meanwhile, the $20 million Puffing Billy Railway Lakeside Visitor Centre opened recently, with the all-weather facility providing unique cultural interpretations of the relationship between the Dandenong Ranges and Puffing Billy, as well as a new cafe, function spaces, upgraded toilet facilities, and retail, food and beverage options.

Why sport is more than a game, more than a pastime Last week the St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar Senior Boys Soccer Team won their first match of the season, defeating Woodleigh School 3 - 2. Great commitment was seen from all players including Jerry, a Year 12 international student playing for St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar.

The match was played as part of the regular diverse range of sporting fixtures that the school offers through its association with the prestigious Southern Independent Schools.

While the opportunity to compete and participate in sport is offered at most schools, it is particularly important at St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar as sport or ‘Athleticism’ makes up one of the four pillars of their renaissance, character-based education model, that helps provide a holistic education to its students.

“Athleticism is one of our 4 As, which also includes Academics, Artistry and Adventure,” said Dr Steven Middleton, associate princi-

pal of St Margaret’s Berwick Grammar.

Upgrading Cardinia Life Cardinia Shire’s premier aquatic and leisure facility, Cardinia Life, could undergo a future redevelopment.

The council is proposed to upgrade Cardinia Life so its facilities, programs and services meet the needs of the current and future community, due to capacity of the venue being reached.

Feedback is being sought to help inform the redevelopment planning- how people currently use Cardinia Life, what they love about the centre and what they would like to see in the future.

Constructed in 2006, Cardinia Life includes a stadium, indoor pools, health club, multi-purpose program rooms and change rooms, kiosk and retail space and a crèche.

Cardinia Shire is experiencing a growth

in population and will continue to experience a significant population growth with a forecast increase of 74,054 people, this is more than 58 per cent, between now and 2041.

There’s no place like it With green space aplenty, get out and about to enjoy the fresh air and autumn colour with family and friends.

From picnics to playgrounds, rail trails and bush walking, quaint heritage shopping villages, gourmet food and coffee galore, discover some of Cardinia Shire’s hidden gems.

Popular attractions such as Mount Cannibal and Emerald Lake Parkare always favou-

Mt Cannibal Flora and Fauna Reserve, located in Garfield North, is a 2.3 kilometre bushwalking loop with beautiful scenic views and landscapes. Listen out for the yellowbreasted robin, the grey fantail and the little brown and striated thornbill singing.

At the southern lookout, you can view a range of landmarks using the directional dial

as a guide, looking over open grass and farmland and out to the bay. With barbecues, a playground, public toilets, seating, picnic areas and plenty of parking, visit Mt Cannibal these school holidays for a fun afternoon.

Covering approximately 52 hectares of land, Emerald Lake Park has features such as Lake Nobelius and Lake Treganowan, as well as a variety of wonderful flora and fauna. The natural bushland is complemented by exotic

and native plants with fern gullies, ornamental trees and open eucalypt forests. Some wildlife you can spot at the park includes lyrebirds, echidnas, black wallabies and other interesting animals.

Emerald Lake Park features roughly 10 kilometres of walking trails, paddleboats for hire, a cafe, barbecues and picnic tables, a playground, a model railway, exercise equipment and a variety of other facilities.

Designed to meet the needs of modern students St Francis Xavier College Officer Campus (Years 7 to 9) was opened in 2012 to provide a Catholic high school to families in the rapidly growing outer South-Eastern suburbs and Western reaches of Gippsland.

Puffing Billy also stops at Emerald Lake Park as the halfway point between Gembrook and Belgrave Stations.

Emerald Lake Park is also hosting some Easter fun on Sunday April 17, where members of the public can visit the Lakeside Cafe, Model Railway, Lakeside Paddleboats and Emerald Museum to collect some free Easter eggs!

There are a range of indoor and outdoor spaces that members of the public can hire for meetings and events.

Emerald Lake Park is accessible for people with limited mobility, with many wheelchair and pram-friendly ramps and paths, including

the loop walk to Lake Nobelius.

The park has two car parks which are accessible via Emerald Park Lake Road, where parking is $6 for the entire day.

For a bit of history, with beautiful gardens and walking trails, try the state significant Nobelius Heritage Park which connects to Emerald Lake Park and the Eastern Dandenong Ranges rail trail. Student wellbeing matters Last week the students at St Clare’s were very excited to finally use the new extension to the playground for the very first time!

The students have been patiently watching the progress of the architecturally designed playground for over a year. The new area includes a ropes course, soccer and football field, shade and cover seating areas, passive play spaces and plenty of new grass where students can run.

This area provides a great facility for Physical Education lessons and opportunities for shared learning experiences in a beautiful outdoor environment. Further developments include an Indigenous Garden and outdoor classroom. This is due for completion in the next few months.

St Clare’s students are particularly enjoying exploring the ‘Ninja’ playground and surrounding play areas.

At St Clare’s we nurture the holistic development of each child. For the St Clare’s family, numeracy and literacy skills are core elements of education; but so is Religious Education - developing empathy, social justice and a strong moral compass. We encourage active play and healthy bodies; understanding other cultures through learning languages; and the confidence that comes with developing creativity through the performing and visual arts.

Sport is playing its part

By David Nagel Sport has played a huge part in the community of Pakenham ever since the first Post Office was opened in town in 1859.

In a lot cases…sport has provided the town’s identity.

The Pakenham Football Club, formed on March 16, 1892, is one of the most successful clubs in Victoria, with almost 30 senior premierships to its name.

Famous names like Bourke, Jackson, Monckton and Young, they built their glowing reputations on the sporting fields around the region.

And Pakenham’s modern-day stars are still shining bright, with coach Ash Green expertly mentoring his players as they prepare for this week’s 2022 opening of the Outer East Football League season.

And don’t forget about the Women’s team, with Rick Stalker a great teacher of the game who would love to see some new faces jump on board for the ride.

Given the history of this great club…imagine pulling on a Pakenham jumper and what that would mean!

The Lions have a long and proud tradition, and with a new committee on board are more than excited to welcome the community to Toomuc Reserve to share the enjoyment of watching the mighty Lions roar again this season.

For lovers of sport, both participants and spectators alike, there’s a never ending source of enjoyment to be had around town!

The Pakenham Racing Club (PRC) has been another staple of the Pakenham community, ever since 1926 when the old course on Racecourse Road was officially opened for the first time.

That old track created legends, with Pakenham-trainer Ray ‘Darby’ Webster providing the highlight for locals when his mighty steed Dark Felt won the Melbourne Cup of 1943.

The move of the PRC to its brand-new facility in Tynong has seen modern-day legends emerge, with now Pakenham trainer Peter Moody winning the 2021 Caulfield Cup with Incentivise.

The PRC now hosts more than 40 meetings a year and is widely regarded as one of the best racing surfaces in the land.

There’s no excuse to not get down to Tynong and check this magnificent and growing facility out!

The Pakenham Cricket Club has recently completed its 2021/22 season in the West Gippsland Cricket Association (WGCA).

ing the Lions the team to beat for many a long year.

Current-day stars like Chris Smith, Jason Williams and Dale Tormey are continuing that tradition with the Lions a regular finalist and premiership winner over the last seven years.

Club President Phil Anning is one of the great people of our town and would love to see some new faces pop along and play for the Lions next season.

Just where do you stop when talking about sport in Pakenham?

Three of our sporting clubs aim for the back of a net, with the Pakenham Warriors competing in the high-level Big V basketball competition from its home court at Cardinia Life.

The Warriors have a solid junior and senior set up, with the senior Warriors attracting good crowds to Cardinia Life during the winter months of the year.

The Pakenham Netball Club – lovingly cared for by Marg Jones – will also aim for the net when the Lions begin their winter season campaign this Saturday.

And the biggest soccer club in town – Pakenham United – has had a great start to its season in the State League 5 division.

United had a brilliant 5-0 start to the year, but were held to a 2-2 draw by White Star Dandenong on Saturday.

President Chris Gomez has sent out an open invitation to the Pakenham community, to get down and support the club on those cold Saturday winter afternoons.

The Deep Creek Golf Club, formerly Pakenham Golf Club, provides a public golf course for the community that is kind on beginners, but also ready to test the very best of players.

For those who love their lawn bowls, the Pakenham Bowls Club now owns one of the great facilities in the region, with its major rink now covered and completely protected from the weather.

After being in the field for over 10 years I had hit a professional brick wall, I have held positions in large organizations for the duration of my career always striving to provide the best possible support to people living with a disability and/or mental health illness.

I continuously represented these organizations attempting to fill a void I honestly never found the skill to do.

Not because I didn’t love what I was doing but because I was always faced with the disappointment of having to fit in the box of the old framework.

When I heard about NDIS and the great things it was doing for people individually, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the nationwide change it will create.

Wazka Support Services is my platform for developing a group of people that hold the same values and same morals I hold when providing support to individuals.

It has been a life-changing experience being part of this change.

I provide my staff with the means to provide quality support to others.

Wazka, is not an organization offering employment, it is a home to a family of people providing change, change to vulnerable people who need support to live an ordinary life.

We want people living with a disability

or a mental illness to strive to be the best possible “them” they can be.

Young Citizen of the Year Cardinia Shire Council’s 2022 Young Citizen of the Year Arshu Maskey continues to inspire the Pakenham community.

At only 25 years old, Arshu has done some exceptional work to support those around her, from back when she was a school leader and a mentor for fellow university students, to now becoming the vice-president of the Cardinia Rotary Club.

When Arshu attended Killester College in Springvale, she was elected Community Service Representative leader for two consecutive years, becoming a role model for her school.

Arshu was responsible for organising blood donation drives, raising funds and facilitating a coin race to bring the community together.

In 2019, Arshu was asked to host a Multicultural International Mother’s Language Day event in Springvale, designed to champion inclusiveness and multicultural diversity.

She said her ability to speak English, Nepali and Hindi helped her to form stronger connections with her local community members.

Arshu completed a Bachelor of Science at Monash University in Clayton before finishing her Masters at the Caulfield campus.

At university, Arshu was mentoring students as a part of a Woman in Technology program, helping students who were just starting out in technology to find their footing.

Monash University and has been working as a data engineer at Earnst Young (based in Melbourne’s CBD) for about a year, she still has ties to the university.

Through a partnership with Earnst Young and the university, Arshu is a mentor for the program RoboGirl, in which she meets with students weekly to provide guidance.

“It’s always really good to help other students out because you know where they’re coming from and when they succeed, you feel like you succeed as well,” she said.

In July, Arshu plans to become the vicepresident of the Cardinia Rotary Club, after joining the group about a year ago.

She said Rotary was the perfect fit, as the community group shared the same values as her own.

“They’re a very supportive group,” she said.

“We try to help others as much as possible and I love meeting new people through the events.”

Arshu has been involved in fundraising efforts and organising efforts to serve the community during the pandemic and natural disasters.

“Even though we were having a pandemic, we were making sure the community’s mental wellbeing was looked after by staying in touch with people through virtual events,” she said.

“I’m really passionate about helping people so I don’t see it as a job; I see it as a hobby.”

Residents in the east of Harkaway have voiced their frustrations over the poor internet and mobile quality in their area.

Neale Adams, who has lived east of Harkaway Road for almost 13 years, said he receives “minimal phone reception and rubbish 4G connection.”

“We currently are using Optus 4G and get download speeds of between 2.53 megabits per second (Mbps) and five Mbps, meaning only one person can use a device at a time and still there may be drop out during video conferencing,” he said.

Mr Adams said pockets of Harkaway also experienced “very poor” mobile reception, with calls frequently dropping out and messages unable to send.

“We sometimes need to leave our house to make or receive a call,” Mr Adams said.

“The major concern is if in an emergency, such as a fire or need for ambulance, our communication will let us down at a crucial time.”

In a statement, Optus said it notes “there are some difficulties in providing blanket mobile coverage to the local area due to challenging terrain.”

“Optus have recently carried out some provisioning changes to the towers in the nearby area, which we hope may provide some coverage improvement,” a spokesperson said.

Satelitte NBN (Sky Muster) was installed in the area around 18 months ago, but residents argue it is unreliable and data caps decrease download and streaming capabilities.

“NBN data is limited and expensive… so

much is online now, we need reliable connections,” resident Mathew Newey said.

NBN Co said the area was not geographically suitable for the residents’ desire for fixed wireless internet.

“NBN previously investigated multiple locations for fixed wireless towers for Harkaway,” a NBN spokesperson said.

“Specific technological requirements and the surrounding geography of the area limited the possible tower locations and a suitable site for a fixed wireless tower was not found.”

To make matters worse, telecommunications companies are now disconnecting landline services in the area in response to the installation of NBN, leaving some residents with limited access to any phone communication.

Mr Adams said he had considered alternative options for better coverage, such as Elon Musk’s satelitte system StarLink, or installing antennas to improve ADSL connection, but many residents could not afford the thousands it would cost to install and run the services.

“We mostly knew that there were alternatives to get good signal strength, but at what cost to our pockets?” he said.

“We are in agreeance that our main goal is to have the telcos come to the party and sort the issues at their cost.“ Last week the Federal Government and NBN Co announced $750 million to upgrade regional internet services.

The funding aims to allow more Australians to access fixed wireless service and faster internet speeds, with hopes of lessening customer congestion to the Sky Muster service.

Hosted at the Cardinia Cultural Centre by the Cardinia Shire Council on Wednesday 30 April, the local business community was treated to its first in-person networking opportunity since the Covid-19 pandemic.

Two years of Covid-19 related challenges have seen an impact on many local employers, particularly when it comes to staff and skill shortages.

For that reason, the guest speaker of the event was Brett Ornstien, regional manager of not-for-profit organisation Job Prospects (SYC), who shared valuable information about the support and assistance available to local businesses who are seeking employees.

Brett has more than 20 years of experience in Employment Services and an understanding across many federal and state government contracts including JobActive, ParentsNext, and Disability Employment programs.

“I know that it is very hard for employees

out there at the moment,“ he said.

“It’s been a really tough few years for employers out there when it comes to finding and retaining staff.

“A lot of employers don’t know what support is available to them.“ Brett shared relevant information about wage subsidies, recruitment, re-employment training programs, internships and postplacement support that is available to any local employer who needs help.

Also in attendance were local employment and training providers to speak with businesses about employment and training needs.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Jeff Springfield said the council was excited to provide the opportunity for the local business community to formally network and reconnect face-to-face, after what is and has been a challenging time for businesses.

“With so many businesses in the shire are experiencing staff and skill shortages, together we can address this issue and guide our way through the range of support options available,“ he said.

Doing so will mean all internet use, including video streaming and VPN, will be unmetered during the off-peak period, and not count towards a user’s monthly metered data allowance for most of the day.

“In addition, for regular NBN Sky Muster, NBN is aiming to increase average monthly data allowances to 55 Gigabytes (GB), increasing to 90GB once the NBN Fixed Wireless upgrade is complete in around two and a half years’ time,” a spokesperson said.

In the mean time, Harkaway locals continue to advocate for seemingly basic connectivity requests to remedy what they call “third world“ service.

“Internet over 1.3mbps and any mobile reception would be great,“ said resident Mark Graf.

Nurturing musical talent Chairo Christian School is developing professional musicians through its thriving Pakenham campus music program.

Chairo Pakenham boasts a variety of ensembles which includes symphonic winds, concert bands, big bands, string orchestras several choirs, flute ensembles, and brass ensembles.

The school recently held its annual Music on the Lawn event on Friday 25 March where students finally received the opportunity to perform to members of the public.

Head of music Kim Thomsen said the students have shown great resilience and dedication despite not being able to perform for the past two years.

“We had about 600 people here and students from all the ensembles performing which was really lovely because they haven’t had many live performance opportunities,” she said.

“We’ve got kids that never performed before and they did an exceptional job.

“The community event had a great atmo-

sphere, with food trucks and activities for children.”

Ms Thomsen said music was an important tool to teach students about mentoring and self discipline.

“It’s more about ability than age, there’s a cross pollination of age groups which is really unique,” she said.

Students in the program have been heavily represented in the Melbourne Youth Orchestras (MYO) - a stepping stone to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.

“Our flagship of the school is the music department and we have very high achieving students,” she said.

Ms Thomsen said she was looking forward to the year ahead and witnessing both the students and public’s achievements.

Scammers are using the My Health Record logo.

Weight loss scam The Australian Digital Health Agency is warning consumers not to fall for a weight loss scam running via Facebook and using the My Health Record logo, promoting a miracle cure .

The ads suggest people can lose 45 kilograms with one teaspoon of a supplement.

Chief clinical adviser Dr Steve Hambleton said the scammers had misused the Agency’s My Health Record logo in the ads.

“This is nonsense. Government agencies don’t lend their logos to companies and My Health Record is a trusted brand, hence our warning,“ he said.

The ads have run through new, small Facebook pages and link to similarly formatted websites, despite each being hosted on different domains.

None of the websites has a name or organisation listed as part of its registration records but two claim to be registered in Iceland.

Dr Hambleton said scammers were insidious and looking to profit from people’s vulnerabilities.

“The use of the trusted My Health Record logo is cause for concern,” he said.

“Don’t fall for this scam.”

Fire restrictions eased unseasonably early Fire restrictions have been lifted unseasonably early across the South East thanks to higher than usual rainfall.

According to the latest Australian Seasonal Outlook, higher rainfall totals have resulted in below average fire conditions, with reduced fire activity in both grasslands and forests this summer.

Much of Victoria will continue to experience average rainfall over the coming months, however, temperatures are predicted to be warmer than normal, particularly in the western parts of the state.

The Fire Danger Period (FDP) finished at 1am on Monday 28 March in Cardinia Shire Council, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council, Bass Coast Shire Council, Casey City Council, Frankston City Council, Greater Dandenong City Council (those portions not included in the area formerly known as the Metropolitan Fire District as at 30 June 2020), French Island, Kingston City Council (those portions not included in the area formerly known as the Metropolitan Fire District as at 30 June 2020), Baw Baw Shire Council, South Gippsland Shire Council, Wellington Shire Council and Latrobe City Council.

CFA deputy chief officer, South East Region Trevor Owen said the grass and bush vegetation across CFA South East Region, particularly

through Gippsland, has been assessed as safe to relax fire restrictions earlier than normal.

“I encourage landholders to take advantage of the current wetter than average conditions and, where safe to do so, reduce the vegetation risk prior to next summer” he said.

Mr Owen emphasised the importance of remaining vigilant.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bushfire risk areas,” he said.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk.”

While the Fire Danger Period will come to an end, it is still important that residents check the local conditions are safe for any burn-off they were considering undertaking.

“You must register your burn-offs, check

weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” Mr Owen said.

“Registering your burn-off ensures that if somebody reports smoke, the incident will be cross- checked with the burn-off register, which will then prevent volunteer firefighters being taken away from workplaces, families and potentially genuine emergencies.”

Landowners can now register their burn-off online at firepermits.vic.gov.au.

Alternatively, you can register with the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) by calling 1800 668 511 or emailing burnoffs@esta.vic.gov.au When conducting burn-offs, remain alert and always have resources on hand to extinguish the fire.

Keep your burn off safe and legal by checking fire restrictions in your area and always register your burn at firepermits.vic.gov.au, checking and monitoring weather conditions – particularly wind, avoiding unnecessary calls to emergency services, notify your neighbours beforehand, leave a three-metre fire break, free from flammable materials around the burn, have sufficient equipment and water to stop the fire spreading, never leave a burn-off unattended – stay for its entire duration and if your burn-off gets out of control, call 000 immediately. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

By Eleanor Wilson Eleven-year-old Makayla Healy said she was “really excited” when her family got tickets to see Disney’s Frozen the Musical at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne earlier this year.

Little did she know, a few months later she would have quite a different view of the musical – from the stage itself.

The Berwick Primary School student has been cast alongside several youngsters to play young Elsa in the hit Broadway musical Frozen as it tours across Australia.

“I’d never [been cast] in a musical before so I was pretty shocked,” Makayla said.

The Grade 6 student, who has been dancing since she was two and “singing her whole life”, said it was her mum who found an advertisement for the casting on Facebook, sparking her decision to audition for the role.

Her father, Andrew Healy, said he was “blown away and really excited” that his daughter had been chosen for the role.

Makayla will be touring across the nation for the next eight months as part of the Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth legs of the show.

“I know my family are really, really excited for me. And I know my friends are really really happy for me as well, but some of them are go-

ing to miss me,” Makayla said.

A Frozen fan well before her personal involvement in the live musical, Makayla said she was looking forward to working alongside esteemed theatre performers, including Wicked’s Jemma Rix – who plays grown up ‘Elsa’ in the show.

“I just really like all the characters and how everyone plays them. There’s magic, and Anna has that excitable factor in her, and Olaf is really funny,” she said of the musical. “it’s also pretty cool, because in the musical you get to work with all the snow, and find out how that all works.”

After each leg of the tour, Makayla will return home to see friends and family for a few weeks before jetting off to perform at the next capital city.

Her school will continue to provide education for the student, and the touring company will provide a tutor to support the touring kids’ learning, getting the tick of approval from her assistant principal father.

“Its OK. Because we’ve been used to doing remote learning for the last couple of years, it will be a similar scenario,” said Mr Healy.

Makayla began rehearsals for the Brisbane shows last week.

Early learning on target Cardinia Lakes Early Learning Centre has received State Government recognition for completing all target areas of the Healthy Early Childhood Services program.

Owner and manager of Cardinia Lakes Early Learning Centre Tamika Hicks said it was satisfying to complete the goals of the program after eight months of working hard on the requirements.

“It’s really satisfying knowing as a team we can implement things that are recommended by the World Health Organisation,” she said.

“It means we can say we provide a high quality service and actually back that up.”

The program is a framework centred around

six key health areas, which include Healthy Eating and Oral Health, Physical Activity and Movement, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sun Protection, Safe Environments and Tobacco, Alcohol and Other Drugs.

The Achievement Program framework brings together all aspects of service life in early childhood settings that are important for creating a healthy environment for all community members.

It is based on the World Health Organisation ‘Health Promoting Schools’ model and aligns with Victorian Government guidelines such as the National Quality Standard and the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework.

We have used the framework to bring together our existing practices, processes and initiatives into a consistent whole service approach to health and wellbeing.

The Pakenham and Nar Nar Goon Fire Brigade attended a call for a leaking gas main after construction workers accidentally hit a pipe at 74 Princes Highway, Pakenham.

Pakenham CFA second lieutenant Phillip Craig said there was no threat to the community.

“We secured the scene and made it safe while waiting for the arrival of the gas company to fix the leak,“ Mr Craig said.

The Cardinia Environment Coalition (CEC) ran their first of a series of public talks on Tuesday 29 March at Deep Creek.

The sessions will be on a range of environmental matters pertinent to the Cardinia Shire Council with guest speakers to give in-depth information about the issue.

The CEC hopes the talks will become a monthly staple.

The inaugural topic was lively lyrebirds, with guest speaker Dr Alex Maisey informing the audience about the significance of lyrebirds within the ecosystem and threats they have faced.

There were concerns over lyrebirds’ regional population in the Dandenong Ranges in the 1980s due to predators and local land use change, but the forest is currently at natural carrying capacity, according to Dr Maisey.

As well as the Dandenong Ranges, lyrebirds can be found in Toomuc Valley and RJ Chambers Reserve, Pakenham Upper, in the Cardinia Shire Council.

Dr Maisey from La Trobe University did a PhD on the role lyrebirds play as ecosystem engineers, which involved learning about how the birds physically alter the environment in ways that impacts other species, knowledge he passed on during the 40-minute talk.

Meghan Lindsay was pleased with how the inaugural event went.

“One of our main purposes was to provide the community with education about environmental issues so we wanted to start this talk series to give people the opportunity to learn more about different environmental topics,” Ms Lindsay said.

“I thought Alex gave us a great talk about lyrebirds and the impact of bushfires and feral animals and a bit about his career journey.

“We had a great turnout, everyone was really captivated by Alex’s deep knowledge on lyrebirds and his great stories and beautiful photos so we were really happy with how many people came along and everyone asked heaps of questions and we seemed to have a really good night so I think it went really well - we were happy with it.”

Lyrebirds are an important part of the ecosystem because of the volume of soil they turn over – 155 tonnes per hectare annually, making their activity one of the biggest disturbance processes.

Beyond the Cardinia region, southern lyrebirds were also affected by the 2019/20 Black Summer bushfires as over 50 per cent of their habitat was lost.

By Jonty Ralphsmith The Cardinia Environmental Coalition (CEC) is encouraging locals to get involved in their nature photography competition.

There are three different categories: flora/ fauna/fungi, landscapes and youth.

The competition is open to people aged over 18 years old with the youth category open to those under the age of 25 years old.

There are prizes for each category including a $200 Ted’s Camera Voucher, and the CEC assures that a camera is not essential to enter – photos taken on phones will be accepted.

All photos, new and old, taken in the Cardinia Shire Council are eligible to enter.

“Cardinia Shire is a special place, with a range of amazing plants, animals and landscapes,” said Meghan Lindsay, project officer of CEC. “There are some fantastic bushland reserves that you can visit to immerse yourself in the nature that the area has to offer, such as Beaconsfield Flora and Fauna Reserve, Bunyip State Park, Cardinia Aqueduct Trail, Emerald Lake Park and Mount Cannibal Flora and Fauna Reserve.

“If you look closely as you meander along your next nature walk, you will see all kinds of interesting plants, animals and vistas.”

The competition will be judged by three photographers, Adam Renyard, and locals

Photos will be accepted until Tuesday 19 April.

Ms Lindsay added that nature photography was a great way to spend time outdoors.

“Nature photography is a great way to gain a different perspective when walking through your local bushland,” she said.

“It will encourage you to look closely for different photo opportunities and you might find things you would not have otherwise noticed!

“It is also a great activity to help you focus your attention on the present moment, as you look for interesting subjects to photograph and concentrate on taking your photo.”

The competition is funded by a VicHealth Reimagining Health Grant.

It was reported in December 2020 that the CEC would receive $8198 to connect young people to nature by involving them in creating a guide to local nature reserves and hosting a nature photo competition.

The CEC has delayed their usage of the funds due to the pandemic.

The grants allows the chosen organisations to build better social connections, provide greater opportunities for physical activity and increase access to healthy, affordable food.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

There are six award categories for individuals, three for employers and four for training organisations, as well as the

Lynne Kosky Memorial Award for Lifetime Achievement, the Industry Collaboration Award and People’s Choice awards.

Winners will receive $5000 prize money and some category winners will have the opportunity to represent Victoria at the Australian Training Awards in Adelaide in November.

Applications close at midnight on Friday 27 May and winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in Melbourne in September.

The event is supported by principal partner Apprenticeship Employment Network and the Global Apprenticeship Network.

Last year’s winners included Diploma of Nursing student Samantha Brown who worked as a conveyancer before realising she wanted to pursue nursing at Federation University TAFE. William Angliss Institute was named Large Training Provider of the Year for its innovative training in the speciality areas of foods, tourism, hospitality and events education.

Dancing for flood relief

By Jamie Salter The Lightning Hill Estate winery in Officer is hosting an event to help raise funds for Queensland and NSW flood victims.

Money will be raised through raffles, a silent auction and a Bunnings style barbecue, as well as 50 per cent of tickets profits donated directly to charity GIVIT and Red Cross Flood Appeal.

Lightning Hill Estate owner Janine Fitzsimmons said she was doing her bit to help those impacted by the floods.

“It’s easy for us to have an event and if we can fundraise, why wouldn’t we?“ Janine said.

“Can you imagine you’ve been through the 2011 floods, you can’t get insurance and you can’t sell your house?

“Your home is your biggest investment and for a natural disaster to deem it worth nothing - I cant even begin to imagine.“ Items up for grabs at the event include a iLve wine fridge, deluxe car detailing and 12 month representation by Spunkz Talent Agency. Finger food will be provided throughout the night as well as a free beer or wine on the house.

Melbourne DJ Sheldon Connolly will donate his time to provide the music as everyone dances the night away. The event will be held on Saturday 9 April from 5pm to 11pm at 130 Whiteside Road, Officer.

CFA rescues stuck cow

“There’s something about the property, people come in and they just breathe out and relax,“ Janine said.

“We’re trying to create a place for people to go in the area because there’s not a lot of options, and to give young and old people to have an opportunity or casual enjoyment.“

CFA volunteers undertook a dramatic rescue operation last week after a cow became stuck in a dam in Pakenham.

A CFA spokesperson said crews from Macclesfield and Pakenham Upper were notified to reports of a horse stuck in a ditch on Pakenham Road, Pakenham around 2pm on Tuesday 15 March.

Upon arrival, crews discovered the animal was in fact a cow, not a horse.

“The cow was extracted from the ditch using a combination of equipment, including a specially designed cow lifting harness, winch and tractor,“ the spokesperson said.

“The extraction was performed under veterinary supervision.“ In a Facebook post made by the CFA, it was said after the extraction “Miss Buttercup“ was given a 50 per cent chance of survival.

“Thankfully 48 hours after her dramatic rescue, the cow defied the odds and her re-

lieved owner was able to confirm that she got up, a little wobbly at first, but was able to let her calf feed before wandering around for a bit!“ the Facebook post read.

“Well done and what an amazing job by everyone involved – we hope she makes a speedy recovery.“

Taking his shot at college

By Shelby Brooks An aspiring Pakenham basketballer has been training hard to prepare for a once in a lifetime opportunity at cracking into the American college basketball system.

St Francis Xavier College graduate Justin Ochaya, 18, is heading to America in April as part of the AAU Australia US tour.

The tour allows talented Australian players to play in front of American college scouts and coaches in the hope of being selected for a scholarship.

Justin, who is a LA Lakers fan, has been playing basketball for many years, and represents Pakenham’s Tribes Basketball Club and the Casey Cavaliers Basketball Club as a point guard.

“I was always 50/50 with footy and basketball until about Year 8,” Justin said.

“But then I started taking basketball more seriously. I was always around basketball- all my family, brothers and cousins all like it. I just loved being around that environment.

“I lived close to the stadium so it was easy for me to come here than to a footy field. It’s harder to get a bunch of mates to play footy but basketball you can always play anywhere.

“Since then I fell in love with it.”

Tribes coach Mading Amech said he couldn’t be prouder of Justin.

“I’ve been training Justin for quite some time,” he said.

“I’m so blessed to have met him and coach him and have someone like him on my team, because he’s always been a good role model to young people. He’s always been setting an example by working really hard.

“He’s coachable and I think that’s what I love about him, it’s made me proud today.”

Why is it that some people seem to be able to squeeze much more into their lives than others?

After all there are 24 hours in a day and seven days in a week for all of us, but when you reflect on the achievements of people like Elon Musk, Richard Branson, Gandhi and Winston Churchill, you have to wonder how on earth they managed to squeeze so much in?

I am not sure if there is a common theme amongst luminaries such as these, but in thinking about business leaders I have worked with, three key principles appear to apply: 1. Make time for themselves 2. Effective delegation 3. Laser-like focus It may seem paradoxical but many of those that achieve so much actually work fewer hours than the rest of us.

This is because creative thought should not be exercised as a marathon but rather as a series of sprints with some downtime in between.

In Alex Soojung-Kim Pang’s book Rest (Why you get more done when you work less), he presents a number of such examples such as Winston Churchill who “regarded his midday naps as essential for maintaining his mental balance, renewing his energy, and reviving his spirits”.

Peculiar win for Bullants

By Tyler Lewis The tie in sport is one of regular debate.

But the reality is – and as peculiar as it sounds – there is always a winner, and a loser, in a tie.

On Saturday in the WGCA District competition Officer was the winner and Upper Beaconsfield was the loser, despite the result being locked at 96 apiece at the conclusion of play.

The Bullants sent the Maroons in and had the top order back in the sheds in the blink of an eye.

The dangerous bats for the Upper Beaconsfield side had all packed away the pads in the early stages of the innings, when the Ants had the Maroons 5/27.

The tail-end of Upper Beaconsfield gave itself something to defend, with numbers seven, eight, 10, 11 and extras all making more than the top six.

Kyle Gibbs top-scored for the Maroons with 18 from 57, while number 11 Andrew McDonald crunched a clutch 17.

Youngster Cooper Pursell had the ball on a string, with 2/7 from six overs.

He wasn’t alone, however, with each of the Bullants bowlers capturing a wicket.

While 96 appears to be a lacklustre chase, the Bullants have been known to make a game of it. Only two weeks ago the Officer side crawled over the line with one wicket in hand chasing Devon Meadows’ 86.

With 20 at the top from Riley Clark, the Bullants were away, but a middle order collapse set up an exhilarating finish.

The Bullants were 4/70, with just 27 runs for victory before losing 3/4.

A 15 run stand etched the home side to 7/89, before it lost a further 3/7.

Leigh Boyle – with the two most important runs of his career – was run out after he and Jonty Bennie tied the score.

Officer captain Brett Monagle spoke to the Gazette of the result, admitting it was a rare feeling.

“It was a bit different to be fair,” he said.

“Normally when you win a flag you think of the whole ’someone hitting the winning runs’ and you all run onto the oval or vice versa

“It has taken a little bit longer to sink in that we won on a tie, I guess we would’ve much preferred to win it, rather than tie it.

“I think as well it is a bit of a reward for the season, we finished on top of the ladder, I think maybe a win clear, so I think it was a result for the hard-work we have put in for the last seven months.

“That makes it a bit easier to take that it was a tie, but still a bit different to an outright win.”

It’s not every finals series a premiership side has winning batting totals of 9/87 and 10/96, but Monagle says that his side has been proof of how difficult low totals can be to reel in.

“I think the target in our head, considering

our semi final was pretty similar to that, we knew if we got 96 that we would technically win,” he said.

“But you never hope chasing a small total that you would have to use all 10 wickets up., “I think once we got to seven or eight down, we just thought let’s get at least to 96 and tie it.

“Ideally we can chase those totals a bit easier, but I think that’s the finals pressure, everyone knows those small totals – especially in finals – can sometimes be the harder ones to chase.

‘We have proven in the last three weeks that they can be.”

he revealed the nerves really only kicked in when his partners were coming and going.

“Walking out there I felt not too bad, copped a few good sledges from the Upper Beac boys to begin the day, I think that made me switch on a bit more,” he said.

“Knowing the batters we had left to come I wasn’t too stressed coming in. I think it was 2/20 or maybe 3/30 odd, I wasn’t too stressed going to the crease, especially with Ash (Smith) – who is our key bat – at the other end.

“But as the game went on, I think I knew a fair bit relied on me to get a bit of a score.”

Officer Cricket Club is now back into the WGCA Premier Division for the first time in exactly a decade.

Warriors settle into top flight with a brave clean sweep

By Jonty Ralphsmith Pakenham’s Championship Women’s team has bounced back strongly from a first round loss to McKinnon – clean-sweeping a double-header against Sunbury and Hume on the weekend.

A commanding final quarter ensured the Warriors ran away with the game 69-56 after a strong end to the third quarter for Sunbury saw the teams exchange the lead multiple times going into three-quarter-time.

Pakenham led for the majority of the contest, withholding a Sunbury outfit that came into the game with a win already under its belt.

Haille Nickerson was supreme for the visitors at Boardman Stadium on Saturday night, finishing with 27 points and Tarryn Wilkin’s double-double (13 points, 11 rebounds) was crucial in ensuring the Warriors first victory of the season.

The Warriors then fronted up for their first home-court appearance on Sunday, welcoming Hume to Cardinia Life.

The home side began well, taking a 17-12 lead at quarter time, with Wilkin (20 points) once again stuffing the stats sheet.

The fast start proved crucial for the Warriors, with the second and third quarters dead even, with the Broncos outscoring the home side 14-13 in the final stanza.

The Warriors ran out 62-58 winners.

Chelsea presents the next challenge on Saturday 2 April, at 6pm, at Cardinia Life.

Pakenham opened the scoring in the extra period, but two executed free throws to Altona’s Diquan Williams with four seconds of the clock sealed victory for the hosts.

After a rapid start for the Warriors that saw them up by 15 at quarter-time, Altona was able to peg the lead back throughout the match, outscoring Pakenham in each of the final three stanzas to send the game to overtime.

Despite not having held the lead since very early in the first quarter, Altona got the better of Pakenham in overtime in a bitter end to a physical game.

The Warriors took a timeout with four seconds to go and had a shot from outside the ring to win in it in the dying seconds but were unable to convert.

Coach Rob Roberts saw clear areas for improvement ahead of their game next weekend, on Saturday 2 April at 8pm against the winless Craigieburn at Cardinia Life.

“It is what it is and we just have to focus on a few things we need to do a little bit better before next time we play them,” Roberts said.

“We need time with the boys on the floor together making sure we get through our stuff and defend the way we want to defend – there were spots through the game we didn’t do that which allowed them some easy buckets to make from the outside.

“As long as we pick up on the defensive end, I think we’ll be okay.”

After fatherhood saw him miss round one, recruit Ned Weideman was instrumental for Pakenham, scoring 26 points to go with 12

rebounds, while Joe Davis – 18 points – was another scoring source.

His return was a welcome addition for Roberts.

“Having him come back and join us at Pakenham was a huge thing – he played his youth career at Pakenham and then went to Frankston NBL one.

“He always said to me he loves the family atmosphere and what we’re doing here so it’s good to have him back and made a pretty big impact on the floor for his first game so hopefully he’ll be able to continue to do that for us.”

In the youth league, the women were grounded after a 73-point win last week, going down by four points to Frankston on Saturday.

Despite double-doubles to Katie KarijicPowell (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Alahna Arnason (20 points, 10 rebounds), Pakenham were on the back foot from a slow first stanza and never managed to find the lead.

It was better news for the men’s who secured a 14 point victory against Wallan.

Like the women, the men were slow out of the blocks, but were plus-26 after quarter time to ensure it remained undefeated.

There was an even spread of contributors with the following players all scoring between nine and 14 points: Josh Norton, Michael Johns, Jackson Grey, Dylan Jenkinson, Matthew Stevens and Hayden Melson.

The women’s youth team will next week take on Warrandyte on the afternoon of Saturday 2 April at Cardinia life, and then will be off to Craigieburn the following day, while the men’s youth team has a bye.

PREVIEW: It will be interesting to see how Pakenham performs come Saturday night.

The Lions certainly have a talented list – and led by Ash Green are in good hands – but there is no denying it was a turbulent beginning to its pre-season campaign.

The men out of Toomuc Reserve have a mighty opportunity this year, with a chance to make – realistically – back-to-back Outer East grand finals. In the latter stages of last year, the Lions showed their worth against the top four sides, often pushing Narre and Cranbourne to its best to beat them.

While the reaction of the group will be fascinating, it will also be interesting to see where the Lions goals are going to come from. Josh Tynan was the leading goal-kicker with eight, and the Lions averaged 78 points last season.

Granted the Lions are a defensive side and only conceded on average 52 points last year, but it’s intriguing to see where that scoreboard impact is going to source from.

The Roos had a head of steam in the final rounds of 2021, defeating several sides above them on the ladder.

There is no doubting that when the Roos get a run on, they go for the kill. In last years six wins, Officer had an average winning margin of 89-points, recording four of six wins by a margin in excess of 70-points.

This year will be different, the gap between the top four and the bottom four will not be as apparent as it was in Division 1 last year and the Roos will be tested more frequently.

With such a talented list, it is certainly up to the task. The Roos should set the benchmark to impact in finals and settle for nothing less.

Wilson has been a classy contributor across numerous sports across his career, but has suffered the pain of many losing grand finals.

But there were no nightmares this time around at Toomuc Reserve, with Daniel Williams (31)) and Mick McLaren (35) backing up their skipper to make sure the Marygoons were going to have to bat very well to succeed after tea.

Pakenham United has continued its unbeaten start to the Men’s State League 5 South competition with a 2-2 draw against White Star Dandenong at IYU Reserve on Saturday.

United twice had the lead, but both times were pegged back by White Star, in an absorbing contest on United’s home pitch.

United fans didn’t have to wait long to get roaring, with last week’s man of the match, Simon Johnstone-Robertson, slotting one into the back of the net in the seventh minute to open his account for the season.

United defended well for the majority of the first half, before keeper Harry Wightman was exposed just before the break, with White Star striker Josh Bowen adding a crucial goal to the one scored against Mentone in round one.

United appeared to have all the answers, taking the lead back just three minutes after Bowen’s equaliser, and continued to hold the visitors out until there was 20 minutes left to play.

Bowen, who was becoming a nuisance, once again levelled the scores to begin a tough and tight contest to the final whistle.

White Star were shown three yellow cards in the second half, with United’s Albert Mambo joining them on the naughty list in the 79th minute.

New United manager Liam McCafferty then swung the changes late, looking to find the right combination to break the 2-2 deadlock.

But the changes were to no avail, the round two contest ending in a draw.

Pakenham will this week travel to Bunyip for the always highly-anticipated local derby.

The Strikers are sure to be in a nasty mood after suffering a 5-1 thumping at the hands of Mentone on Saturday.

The Strikers won 5-1 in round one, with their inconsistent start to the season making it difficult for McCafferty to know what to expect at the 3pm on Saturday.

United, in fourth position on four points, can open up a four-point gap on its local rival if it can get the job done on the weekend.

No matter ladder positions, the local derby is always a cracking contest!
