My Ryan offered a live demonstration of his sculpting abilities for onlookers at the exhibit, creating pieces out of scrap metals and discarded materials.

“I find the fun is in scrounging bits and pieces and making stuff out of other things,” Mr Ryan said.

He came to art work later in life, as a means of distraction following a death in the family.

Omicron toll hits

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Data from the Victorian Department of Health has shown that more than 100 people in the South East died during Covid’s Omicron-variant wave, prompting a reminder from the department of the importance of getting a booster shot of the Covid-19 vaccine.

Between 8 December 2021 and 21 Febru-

ary 2022, 56 Casey residents, 37 Greater Dandenong residents and eight in Cardinia Shire died with Covid.

The South East and the city’s North West suffered the most Covid-related deaths in greater Melbourne in that period.

There were also high fatalities in surrounding council areas such as Monash (48), Kings-

ton (32) and Whitehorse (32).

In Melbourne’s North West, Brimbank (65 deaths), Whittlesea (47), Moreland (47) and Hume (35) suffered the highest tolls.

More than 87 per cent of Victorians who died with Covid in the reporting period were aged 70 and over.

The Omicron wave had hit Casey and Great-

er Dandenong hard – particularly in January.

In Casey, there were nearly 20,000 new Covid cases reported between 3-23 January. In the same period, there were 9500 new cases in Greater Dandenong.

In the past week, Casey still recorded the most new Covid cases in the state with 2500.

Pet shelter hold-up terror

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An ex-reservist soldier who tied up and threatened to shoot a terrified worker as he tried to break out his pet cat from an animal shelter at Cranbourne West has been jailed.

Tony Douglas Wittman, 25, from Langwarrin, pleaded guilty at the County Court of Victoria to charges including aggravated burglary, common law assault, perjury and false imprisonment.

He told he police he had a “brain meltdown” and “switched into army mode” after being told over the phone he couldn’t pick up his missing cat from The Lost Dogs Home shelter until the next day.

On the night of 11 January 2021, he packed a black mask with a white skull print, an imitation flashbang, imitation firearms, cable ties, a tomahawk, a hunting knife, three ammunition magazines, a torch, wire cutters and a pet carrier.

Dressed in military style clothing, he cut a hole in the perimeter fence and entered the pound about 10.20pm.

Wittman approached and pointed his imitation gun at a worker as she drove in for her overnight on-call shift.

She described Wittman as wearing “full mil-

itary style clothing” and bearing a “rifle” like a SWAT team member in a movie.

“If you do as I say and listen to me, I won’t shoot you,” Wittman told her.

She pleaded to him: “Please don’t shoot me, I have a two-year-old boy”.

Wittman marched her inside and asked her where the cats were. Scared he would harm the cats, she said she didn’t have keys for the area.

Wittman pointed the gun with his finger on the trigger. He threatened to shoot her several times if she didn’t comply.

He ordered her on her knees as he tied her hands behind her back with cable ties.

In what he later described as a “tactical withdrawal”, Wittman left via the hole he cut in the fence. He discarded his military clothing and weapons in bushland.

After five minutes, with her hands still tied, the worker managed to call her manager, her partner and triple-0.

“Help me, there’s a man with a gun, call the police,” she told her manager.

A security worker found her crying, shaking and struggling to stand.

She told police that she was “terrified this person will come back or try to find me”. He was “so aggressive and cold towards me I hon-

estly thought he was going to shoot me and the animals”.

She was later diagnosed with post-traumatic stress, anxiety and depressive symptoms such as flashbacks and nightmares. She has been unable to return to the work she loved.

In sentencing on 25 February, judge Duncan Allen said the worker’s victim-impact statement described her “abject horror and fear” while being “tormented” and “tortured”

by Wittman.

“You unequivocably changed her life.”

Police were called after Wittman returned to collect his cat the next day. He initially denied that he broke in the previous night, and perjured himself with a false written statement.

He later confessed when police found evidence that he was out until 11.23pm that night.

“I had a brain meltdown… I tac’d-up and I breached the perimeter of the Lost Dogs’ Home and I went searching for my cat,” Wittman told police.

“The only thing I really treasure in this world is that cat and it was taken away from me.

“And through anxiety, I acted irrationally and I didn’t think about the consequences of my actions or the fallout or – by what happened. I was only thinking about saving my

cat because my cat has saved me from killing myself so many times.”

Wittman said he didn’t have any intention of harming the worker, and “thought it best to make a tactical withdrawal”.

“I could imagine she’d be scared s***less and she’d be having nightmares for a long time … I really hope they give her counselling that I never got.

“The original plan was to sneak in … grab my cat … get the f*** out … not engage unless absolutely necessary.”

Judge Allen said Wittman’s offending – “as serious as it is and as horrific its impact on its victim was” – was not motivated by personal enrichment.

He also noted Wittman’s early guilty plea, no prior criminal convictions, genuine remorse, mental illness and a possible autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. His PTSD was linked to suffering serious, criminal childhood abuse.

He said the community was best protected

by Wittman continuing psychological and psychiatric treatment after his release supervised by parole.

Wittman was jailed for up to six years, including a minimum non-parole period of three years. His term includes 410 days served in pre-sentence detention.

Library activities to mark International Womens Day

By Marcus Uhe On Tuesday 8 March, the world will come together to recognise International Women’s Day, highlighting the social economic political and cultural achievements of women around the world.

Casey Cardinia Libraries has chosen to recognise the day with a series of events highlighting women’s empowerment at their facilities including a Self-Esteem and Body Confidence for Teens Workshop at Doveton, and a Womens’ Health for Dari Speakers information session at Hampton Park.

Chief Executive of Casey Cardinia Libraries Beth Luppino reinforced their commitment to the cause.

“Casey Cardinia Libraries is proud to support International Women’s Day 2022,” Ms Luppino said.

“This year we celebrate with events on women’s health, body confidence and selfesteem.

“Our libraries continue to develop and promote the strength of women in our community and to support a gender equal world.”

Michelle Lam is a certified life coach from Glow Life Coaching and a Doveton local who will be running the workshops at the Doveton library.

She said that the aim of the program is to address the struggles that teenage girls experience in a safe and non-confrontational environment, such as body-image issues and low self-esteem.

“I’m here to show them that they don’t need to change who they are or look a certain way to feel beautiful, “ Ms Lam said.

The lure of social media and being glued to mobile phones during lockdown has only exacerbated these issues according to Ms Lam. “There’s so much in our faces and being in lockdown, you’re always on your phone, being shown girls in a certain way can be portrayed as negative.

“I don’t want girls to feel depressed or ugly or unwanted. I just want girls to be happy

I love comics, the circus, festivals, carnivals and markets.

What are you most passionate about?

Getting everyone I know away from their TV screens and into a live theatre or music venue as often as possible. Support the arts!

What do you love about what you do?

My job is incredibly social which suits my personality and I get to fundraise for an incredible organisation (Australian Red Cross).

Who is the best person you’ve worked with?

My beautiful friend Sandra who volunteered for Red Cross at our Bentleigh store. She was so sweet and kind and any time I walked in the door, she would greet me with a beautiful hug and I could just feel the incredible love she had for me and I know she would feel the same from me. She and I had an incredible connection and I miss her dearly. She passed away a couple of years ago.

What is your most memorable moment?

My first Burning Man Festival at Black Rock Desert in Nevada in 2016 where after a night out exploring all the art installations and incredible spaces, I was riding my bike back to my camp, completely lost and feeling the happiest I had ever been.

What would your last meal be?

My mum’s homemade pizza. It’s incredible!

What was your favourite subject in school?

Drama, of course.

What event past or present would you like to witness?

The first landing on the moon (with my own eyes and feet – I need real proof).

Which three guests, dead or alive, would you invite to dinner?

My dad (who has passed away) and my mum and sister so we can all have one last dinner together.

Bacaller’s serial approach

By Marcus Uhe Pearcedale author Sarah Bacaller is drawing on inspiration from history to stagger the release of her new novel She, Tenacity.

While the book will be available to purchase as an e-book or hard copy from Friday 1 April, readers can immerse themselves in the experience of reading the story as a community through twice-weekly free email instalments, beginning the same date.

“Last year I was reading a lot of George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) and her and Charles Dickens released a lot of their novels as serials in magazines and journals,” Ms Bacaller explained.

“A colleague and writing mentor of mine kept up a weekly subscription sending philosophical reflections and recently retired, and I was reflecting on the process.

“It becomes a rhythm of your life and builds an ongoing connection and relationship between reader and writer.

“It’s a nice way of being present in someone’s life.”

Her new novel follows the ups and downs of the life of the main character, Gab, navigating the complexities of early adulthood in rural Victoria, while also shouldering the responsibilities of caring for her mother and brother.

“It highlights challenges of what young people have to decide when they get to that age.

“A lot of times there are barriers that may not be visible to people on the outside.

“People often don’t see how much thought goes into making those decisions.”

An academic by trade, Ms Bacaller had ambitions to be a writer ever since she was seven years old growing-up in Noble Park and Frankston, but turned her focus to other career paths as she got older, with doubts about whether writing was a practical occupation.

Pearcedale author Sarah Bacaller’s new novel She, Tenacity is available from April 1.

Ms Bacaller and friend Cristina, one of the women to whom She, Tenacity is dedicated, at a The Pictures: SUPPLIED Babes Project function. 270236 oped her talents through academic research and penning publications.

She, Tenacity is her second novel after publishing The Fault Lines Founding Liberty in 2020.

On top of writing her own stories, she has narrated a variety of audiobooks, which she sees becoming a crucial part of the future of story-telling.

“I love normal books and having one in my hand because I like to interact with it, but I’m not a traditionalist. I’ll take stories in any way they come.

“The value with audiobooks is you often use them in contexts where you couldn’t be reading anyway, so it’s like getting some bonus reading.

“You can invest time into it when you might not normally have any, and absorb it in a different experience.

Fifty proceeds of proceeds from e-book and printed sales of the book will go towards The Babes Project, a charity organisation which supports at–risk and vulnerable women experiencing the perinatal period through providing support, knowledge and understanding.

Ms Bacaller is a former volunteer for the Project and a mother of two children herself, who understands how challenging parenthood can be.

“I want to support their work and feel frustrated that I can’t support them more,” she said.

“Their approach just seemed to be a really constructive way to respond to difficult social issues and they recognise the hardships that a lot of women face.

“Instead of looking down on them, they ask, ‘What can we do? How can we help? What do we have to offer?’”

Founder of the The Babes Project and chief executive Helen Parker said she was thrilled Ms Bacaller has chosen to use her platform to support the charity.

“She’s remarkable,” Ms Parker said.

“She’s always been very passionate and I love that people can use their own skills and gifts to raise awareness about an issue that touches so many lives.

“So many of us are really ignorant about the complexities of the perinatal period and the early days of parenthood. Raising awareness of the issue in a beautiful way like this is really powerful.”

She said the majority of funding will go towards their Frankston facility.

“At the moment we are full, and every dollar contributed means we can look at increasing capacity.

“Pearcedale and down towards Hastings and Bittern, we have quite a lot of women who are isolated. We service the whole Peninsula and there’s a nice synergy there.”

From pain to art passion

By Marcus Uhe Cranbourne artist Wayne Ryan turned to sculpting and recreational metalwork in a time of darkness.

Following the loss of his younger brother David, Mr Ryan needed something to take his mind off the situation and escape reality.

A metalworker by trade having started as an apprentice working with sheet metals, it’s grown to be much more than a simple distraction.

“It’s something I never thought I would be interested in,” Mr Ryan recalled.

“I was moping around the whole time (after David’s death).

“It was an unfortunate situation but something good came out of it.”

The resourceful Mr Ryan makes the most of recyclable materials such as pieces of scrap metal and old car parts for his creations, which benefits the environment and keeps the costs down.

Finding treasure in materials where others may see trash adds to the spontaneity and freewheeling spirit of the pastime.

“I find the fun is in scrounging bits and pieces and making stuff out of other things.

“I don’t have a style or theories that I could be tied-down to. It’s more about what comes to mind and what’s available.

“I have no training; what I come up with is based on materials and thoughts.

“There’s no plan, I just do what comes to mind.”

The decision of when to stop work on a piece can be the hardest part of the creative journey.

Mr Ryan said that he has learnt to not aspire for perfection as it would ruin his style.

He also believes it helps to draw a distinction between his professional world and his pastime.

“What I do at work has to be at a really high standard, and costs money.

“Doing own stuff, it doesn’t matter if it’s a little bit crooked; it adds natural touch.

“It helps to establish a cut-off point between manufacturing and reality.”

Mr Ryan recently had his artwork displayed

at the What’s On Cardinia Showcase, the first time he has had his pieces displayed in an exhibit, and was asked to demonstrate his sculpting skills while providing commentary to onlookers on his creative process.

While sculpting is not his number one art style, his favourite piece is a padlock he made out of stone, seven times the size of a standard lock, which takes pride of place in the kitchen family room of his home.

While he doesn’t have an end-goal for his work, Mr Ryan doesn’t plan on putting down the tools any time soon.

“It’s one of those things where you look back and think, ‘Why didn’t I do this 20 years ago?

“The interest will always be there. As long as I’m still capable, health-wise, I’ll keep doing it.”

The What’s On Cardinia Showcase is free to enter at the Cardinia Cultural Centre until Sunday 20 March every day from 10am to 3pm, excluding Mondays.

Omicron toll impacts in the South East From page 1 In the same time, 650 Greater Dandenong residents contracted Covid.

A Department of Health spokesperson said a third vaccine dose significantly reduced a person’s chances of going to hospital, ICU or dying from Covid-19.

In the reporting period, 33 per cent of people who died were unvaccinated. About 8 per cent had received their third vaccine dose.

“The best thing Victorians can do to protect themselves from Covid-19 is to get their third dose as soon as they’re eligible.”

Mobile and pop-up clinics were announced for a football game in Casey Fields on 26 February, as well as Dandenong Basketball Stadium, Dandenong Plaza and Springvale Rise Primary School.

“Whether it’s in the comfort of your own

home, at half-time during the game, or a temple, church or mosque – we are taking vaccines to wherever is most convenient for you and your community,” Health Minister Martin Foley said.

Everyone 12 years and above is eligible for the Pfizer vaccine. Second doses of Pfizer are available three weeks after the first dose.

Third dose booster shots are available for 16 years and older – three months after the second dose. Vaccines are available at participating GPs and pharmacies, as well as hubs such as Sandown Racecourse and Cranbourne Racecourse.

People urged to sign up for Clean Up Thousands of Australians nationwide have already signed up for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March, but more people are urgently needed to address the country’s current waste crisis.

Clean Up Australia chairman Pip Kiernan said it’s more important than ever to get involved with Clean Up Australia Day. “Our environment is experiencing the impact of the pandemic,” Ms Kiernan said.

“We’re seeing a huge surge in single-use plastics and unprecedented numbers of face masks, takeaway coffee cups and food packaging littering our footpaths, parks and beaches.

“There’s no better time than right now to show that you care. While we have been encouraged by the strong interest from communities right across Australia, more rubbish is entering our environment by the day, so we need everyone to get involved.

“For every little bit that we all do on Sunday March 6, we are showing that we care and that we all have a role to play in protecting the environment around us.“ Registration is easy, and all community-based participants receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families or groups available.

If you can’t join a Clean Up, Ms Kiernan urges Aussies to make a donation to Clean Up Australia.

All funds raised through donations are allocated to educational resources and clean up materials provided free of charge to community, school and youth groups across the nation, all year round.

Schools Clean Up Day will be on Friday 4 March.

Concerned by the number of South Sudanese girls entering the justice system, a youth worker has developed a program to help steer the young women down a more fruitful path.

Tempest Alphonse, from the Centre for Multicultural Youth, created the My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) program designed to empower girls aged 15-19 from the South Sudanese community build connections, make positive life choices and contribute positively to the community.

MSK will be run out of My Place Youth Centre Pakenham for girls across the wider South East.

Tempest engaged young girls from the South Sudanese community, as well as their parents, to work out how to best deliver the program.

“Pre-Covid-19, we had an over representation of girls from the South Sudanese community entering the justice system,” she said.

“In the South Sudanese community, older girls look after the younger siblings and help out the mothers a lot in the households.

“The concept of My Sister’s Keeper is to have that older female mentor for these young girls; a sister they can relate to. We’ve been through what they’ve been through and hopefully we

The program will see the mentor and mentee participate in activities and outings as well as skills based learning like budgeting, cooking and leadership.

“We want them to see if they are directed in another path, their lives are really going to be

successful,” Tempest said.

“If there are people supporting them and activities to keep them busy, maybe even if they get work as well, they can really have a fruitful life. “They have the heart but situations can be challenging.”

MSK will begin in March this year.

Experience guides Zahra

By Jonty Ralphsmith Singaporean migrant Zahra Jali believes more needs to be done to help culturally and linguistically diverse young people settle into society.

Now 21, Zahra arrived in Australia aged 15 and living in Cranbourne said the cultural differences from her Malay and Singaporean ethnicities made it difficult to partake in community activities and events.

“I thought that I wasn’t properly assimilated into society,” Zahra said.

“Even though I found solace in being around people that have the same religion to me, I thought it would be more beneficial to be exposed to people not from my community as well and not from my religion and I didn’t have that kind of opportunity when I moved to Australia when I was 15 years old so I was pretty secluded from the Australian culture.”

The isolation caused Zahra to feel stigmatised and she is calling on people to gain a greater respect for each other’s cultures to corrode preconceived prejudices.

“It’s important for people of another culture need to get to know others so they don’t feel alone,” Zahra said.

“We fear the things that we do not know, so if we share knowledge about the kind of culture we are, the people we have, I’m confident that people will grow more understanding and concerned of each other, and the first step is using food or sport as a positive catalyst.

“As much as we can come up with these ideas, we do need the help of councils and governments to fund these initiatives so we can finance it now and for the future.”

She became aware of sporting and other activities on offer in Australia through ‘expansive research of the internet’ but believes these

opportunities for social interaction should be better advertised to the multicultural community.

Now a community champion for VicHealth, she is strongly endorsing the Jumpstart! Program which seeks to create a healthier future through hundreds of community-led food, art and play initiatives for young Victorians after being hit hard by Covid-19.

Jumpstart! was launched on Tuesday 15 February to create a healthier future for young people via VicHealth.

Seventy-one percent of young people say staying socially connected has become one of the most important issues for them during the pandemic, while 76 per cent say having food close to home is important and 69 per cent say poor access to sports or activities near home hinders physical activity.

Jumpstart! is the second major investment delivered through VicHealth’s future healthy initiative.

Future Healthy is investing $45 million in new programs over three years to support people aged up to 25-years-old reconnect socially and safely, enjoy good food and get active.

As a community champion, Zahra is helping shape the solutions needed for people to lead healthier, happier lives.

council to bring these ideas to life.”

More about the actual initiative The City of Casey said it would be open to supporting the Jumpstart! Initiative.

“VicHealth’s JumpStart! initiative aims to build vibrant communities by creating hundreds of community-led food, art and play initiatives for young Victorians, whose lives have been hard hit by COVID-19. Council is currently reviewing the different funding tiers and will consider applying for any appropriate ones to provide further support to our young residents,” said Mr Coldham, director of community life.

The council supports VicHealth’s #ThisGirlCan initiative, encouraging young women and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds to participate in sport through working with local personal trainers or physical activity to conduct free physical activities.

Council’s youth services also have a multicultural youth officer that supports the engagement and participation of culturally and linguistically diverse young community members and provides partnership to multicultural agencies.

The council provide interactive programs and recreational activities and the youth team runs events to engage young people in the City of Casey.

The Casey Youth Services Network meets on a bi-monthly basis to “provide network members with an opportunity to network, share resources and information, strengthen referral pathways, promote services and advocate for youth in the Casey Community,” according to Mr Coldham.

Youth information centres throughout the municipality are open for people aged 10 to 25 years old.

Call for asylum reform

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Eight years of his life were wasted in waiting, says a former Iranian doctor.

In an address to the Back Your Neighbour campaign launch, ‘Ahmed’ (not his real name) described the “painful torture” of his first long years in Australia.

As an asylum seeker forced from his homeland, he met a wall of restrictions.

As part of his initial visa, he wasn’t allowed study or work rights or even Medicare - let alone to practise as a doctor.

“It was quite difficult for me to survive here.

“Seven or eight years of my life got wasted without doing anything.”

The visas are designed to force people to get fed up and go back. But he and thousands of others don’t have a safe place to go, Ahmed says.

He was forced to scrap for jobs paying well below the $22 hourly minimum wage.

Washing dishes, delivering pizzas for as low as $12 an hour.

“And I had to do it – at least I was getting something.”

Under the compounding stress, Ahmed was paralysed by a stroke.

“It was a thing that takes you to a point where you don’t want to live anymore.

“You get so much depression that you don’t want to continue your life.”

After that low, Ahmed said he never gave up hope. He continuously applied to Australian universities “seeking help from wherever possible”.

Hope arrived in the form of a University of Melbourne scholarship, which covered all his tuition fees.

Soon after his studies, he landed work as an audiologist.

“I’m really satisfied, really happy to be in a very respectful, very good job.

“I’m happy to be in a position to contribute back, especially in this time of Covid and Omicron. Because Australia is struggling to get health professionals to fill up all the places.”

Doubts rise on waste plan

Great Southern Waste Technologies’ waste-to-energy plant has been approved for Dandenong South. However, GSWT is out of the race for the South East council consortium contract.

According to a Glen Eira council report, the SEMAWPP gate fee payable by 2026 would be up to $235 a tonne.

Currently, Glen Eira pays a $110 per tonne gate fee and Greater Dandenong $167.66 per tonne gate fee – which is adjusted annually with CPI. It includes the State Government’s EPA landfill levy, which is increasing from $105.90 to $120.90 in July.

The council report recommended advanced waste processing due to Glen Eira’s current landfill in Melbourne’s North West nearing capacity. The landfill was expected to close in 2026.

ACE Foundation sets sights on Cardinia Shire

A waste-to-energy plant is thought to be part of the project, though the technology has yet to be decided.

Last year, a permit was controversially granted by EPA and VCAT to Great Southern Waste Technologies for a waste-to-energy plant in Ordish Road, Dandenong South.

Greater Dandenong Council was opposed to the facility.

However, GCWT did not make the shortlist of tenderers for the SEMAWPP. The shortlisted applicants are Veolia Environmental Services Australia Pty Ltd, Sacyr Environment Australia and a consortium of Pacific Partnerships and REMONDIS Australia.

Rex name shame

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

The ACE (Aiding Casey Education) Foundation is hoping to expand it’s program to assist every student in the Cardinia Shire.

The foundation provides support to school kids in need across Casey through meal replacement drinks for kids who attend school without breakfast, hardcover books for preps and the provision of glasses for vision-impaired students.

Chair Leon Shapero established the ACE Foundation in 2014 and has worked in Cranbourne as a GP obstetrician since 1987.

He said government funding was required to realise his dream of helping kids in need throughout Cardinia.

“There’s plenty of crossover between the two shires so the idea of applying these programs to the kids of Cardinia is very appealing,“ Dr Shapero said.

“If we want to assist otherwise unknown vision-impaired kids in their education, then it shouldn’t stop at the City of Casey.

“The idea of extending that locally was always my vision and as a sister shire, it just makes sense.“ The ACE Foundation is a not for profit which exists solely on donations and has no administrative costs, which means every cent goes towards helping local kids.

The foundation currently spends about $100,000 in Casey annually, and expects covering Cardinia will cost $135,000 per year.

Mr Shapero said with interest already gathered from people in Cardinia, all that was needed now was a financial boost.

“There are some State Government programs that are sporadic and aren’t all inclusive - they do some good but don’t work on a wider scale like what we do in Casey,“ Mr Shapero said.

“Relying on landfill to dispose rubbish isn’t a sustainable long-term solution and landfills across Victoria are progressively running out of airspace capacity.”

In favour, Cr Neil Pilling said it would provide “economic security for our community”.

To not proceed would put the council in a “terrible bargaining position”.

Greater Dandenong’s waste is taken to the Suez Hallam landfill, which is expected to close in five to eight years.

The SEMAWPP’s successful tenderer has yet to be chosen, nor the site for the advancedwaste facility.

Two councils have withdrawn support for a controversial advanced waste project servicing up to 14 East and South East municipalities.

Greater Dandenong council is expected to decide this month if it will sign up to the South East Metropolitan Advanced Waste Processing Project.

It is expected to include a waste-to-energy plant, which would incinerate rubbish at a yetto-be-announced site.

Glen Eira and Boorondara councils have recently decided not to commit to the 25-year contract. Meanwhile, only Casey and Whitehorse councils have so far signed up.

According to a Glen Eira council report, the project stated that the project tenderers required certainty of supply.

“If a majority of councils choose to not commit to the project, the project is unlikely to proceed.”

During a 22 February meeting, Glen Eira councillors narrowly voted down a motion to sign up.

Councillors baulked at locking in Glen Eira to provide a “minimum tonnage” waste supply for 25 years.

They were also concerned by the lack of community consultation, toxic emissions and a possible gate fee significantly higher than current landfill charges.

Speaking against the motion, Cr David Zyngier said the contract would bind Glen Eira to forgoing newer technologies for a dated 40-year-old system.

It would also block opportunities to increase recycling and the council’s net zero carbon emissions by 2030 target.

The by-product would be “large amounts of toxic waste” that would have to be transported and disposed, as well as emissions in the atmosphere.

Crossing is going Early works will soon begin at the Camms Road level crossing in Cranbourne with a contract now awarded, taking the busy Cranbourne line closer to being level crossing free by 2025.

An alliance comprising Fulton Hogan Construction, Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and the Level Crossing Removal Project will deliver the $92 million works that will reduce road congestion and allow trains to run every 10 minutes during morning peak.

The level crossing will be removed by elevating Camms Road over the rail line, improving safety and easing congestion for the 12,000 drivers passing through each day.

Minister for Transport Infrastructure Jacinta Allan said the project would change the way people live in the area.

“The Camms Road level crossing has frustrated locals for decades,” Ms Allen said.

“This contract award is a huge step in making sure we’re well on our way to getting rid of it for good.”

Camms Road is one of the last two remaining level crossings on the Cranbourne line to be removed a year ahead of schedule in 2024.

More than 137 trains pass through the level crossing each day with more services to be added as early as next month.

Early works include setting up the worksite, building work sheds and fencing off the work area to keep the community and workers safe.

Throughout 2022, locals can expect to see crews working on relocating utility services and completing earthworks to prepare the area for the new bridge.

Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards said she was looking forward to the project’s completion.

Last year, concept designs of the Camms Road level crossing removal were released for community feedback, with more than 540 pieces of feedback received.

Improvements to safety, walking and cycling connections, landscaping and architectural elements were among the key themes.

Based on this feedback, a new connection will be built for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the rail line, with the road bridge to feature wide, well-lit paths and the opportunity to enhance the local area through design elements and landscaping.

The road bridge design will ensure surrounding streets and paths are better connected, including Fairfield Street, which provides access for eight bus services to Cranbourne Station each day.

The Camms Road level crossing follows recent benefits for passengers as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade, including track duplication between Cranbourne and Dandenong which allowed 50 extra services to run on the line each week, a new Merinda Park Station and the removal of the level crossing at Greens Road, Dandenong South.

This work, together with the Metro Tunnel, will create room for 121,000 more passengers every week on the Cranbourne line and save passengers travelling from Cranbourne or Pakenham up to 30 minutes off a return journer to Parkville, or up to 50 minutes off a return journey to St Kilda Road.

As part of the Level Crossing Removal Project, 85 level crossings will be gone for good by 2025, with 58 already removed.

Parliament drives youth

By Jonty Ralphsmith Six African students across three schools in the South East are channelling their passion to champion equality.

Through participation in the Victorian youth parliament program, the students are seeking to change the violent, street-wandering perception of African Australians.

They instead want to demonstrate an image of respect, intellect and enthusiasm.

“A lot of Africans might walk down the street and get bad looks because the media shows Africans fighting but they don’t know our inner selves and what we’re capable of,” student Rethath Elghali said.

“So we want to show we’re educated and we can become doctors, we can become a lot more, we’re not just crackheads or gangers – we’re not bad people.”

The youth parliament program has run for 35 years and accepts teams of six people aged between 16 and 25-years-old.

The six students are in years 10 or 11 from Narre Warren P-12 College, Lyndale Secondary College and Cranbourne East Secondary College.

Participants are given the opportunity to explore social issues in society and debate their ideas with other teams around the state in Victorian parliament in June.

It seeks to build leadership skills and deepen students’ understanding of the political system and issues affecting society.

A greater representation of African Australian excellence in society, support for multicultural youth and social equality are among the issues that matter to these go-getters.

“I feel like we need more help and support throughout the community. If we have more people and more things that would help us we would benefit,” student David Taiwo said “For example – some people might not be from here so we need to find somewhere we can fit in and feel comfortable we have people with us we can talk to so we can really fit in.”

Ladan Ahmed, one of the team’s ‘resource persons,’ responsible for organising the students, works with 100 African Australians across the schools and welcomed the opportunity for the teens to express their intellect beyond the classroom.

“All our students are really creative in the sense they understand and acknowledge the challenges but they also have solutions and

they’re very creative and innovative on what they need to battle and face these challenges,” Ms Ahmed said.

“They’re very big on all these aspects and ideas on what we need rather than sitting back and arguing about what we don’t have.”

The students will be paired with a mentor to discuss their ideas and will also meet semifrequently before a training weekend in May and the parliament sitting from Monday 27 June until Wednesday 29 June.

There is a competitive application process to be accepted into the program, with only 20 teams admitted per year, and scrutiny was also placed on the six students that resource persons Ms Ahmed and Mukasa Monga chose to accept onto the team.

“I see the potential in all these students on a daily basis and just seeing all their viewpoints

of changes they want to make within their community makes me feel like we have the next generation of voices who should be making the decisions and policies and laws for us,” Ms Ahmed said Student Danya Daoud was motivated to give her culture a voice that may not otherwise be heard.

“Having such an African Australian saturated group, we can get more views from different African Australian individuals in the community whereas in another group where there is only one to two, everything would be based on experiences of those perspectives,” she said.

“We can collaborate and voice what we experience and solutions to that which will better reach the African Australian community.

“We’re not only empowering the African Australian community; truly we’re empowering all people of colour because at the end of the day we are the minority here in Australia.”

One criterion for the group applications is ensuring the team is reflective of the diversity of youth around Victoria but program director Tessa Buchanan is not aware of another team ever being made up exclusively of African Australians.

“I’ve been (involved) for five years and I was really excited when I received the application because they had a very specific representation of African culture that we don’t necessarily get,” Ms Buchanan said.

“I was excited for them to bring experiences and perspectives to the program.”

The youth parliament will this year be sitting from Monday 27 June until Wednesday 29 June after a training weekend in May.

By Marcus Uhe The residents at the Botanic Gardens Retirement Village in Cranbourne took the opportunity to showcase their incredible talents and celebrate the fruits of their lockdownlabour with a hobbies, arts and crafts display.

Over the weekend of 26 and 27 February, the Village welcomed visitors to view all manner of creations, including woodwork, paintings, quilts, floral arrangements and so much more.

One display belonged to Alan Lazarus, who taught himself to play the harp 10 years ago and recorded his first CD during the pandemic.

“I took up music when I retired at 65 because my hobby used to be flying planes, but at 65 I couldn’t pass the medical,” Mr Lazarus said.

“When you get to our age, music exercises both sides of the brain and keeps you mentally alert, and it’s great fun, too.”

His debut album Footprints (Back in Time) features a combination of cover tracks and originals, inspired by artists such as American folk group Carter Family, Hiram Hank Williams and Merle Haggard. Mr Lazarus gave the crowd a sample of his talents with a live performance during the display.

He said the motivation of being able to return to the stage helped him get through the various lockdowns.

“When Covid-19 hit and we couldn’t get out anywhere, like most musicians everywhere, there was nothing going; we couldn’t play anywhere, so I just sat at home and started writing songs, and it turned out pretty well.

“It was hard at first but once you get used to the fact that it’s going to pass, so on the first day that we’re allowed to get out, I’ve still got to be able to get out and perform or something like that, so I spent most of my time just writing, rehearsing and practising stuff over and over again.

“It worked out okay.”

While vaccination jabs became our number one defence against the virus, Rhae Nelson was focused on needles of a different kind.

“I’m 91 and I’ve knitted all my life but I had never made a beanie until lockdown,” Ms Nelson said. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

“I suddenly got inspired. I picked-up my needles and started, and I’ve done about 250 beanies since.

“It was just something different. I had stacks of wool, not enough to do anything with except make a beanie, so I did.”

She even held a beanie-fest and sold more than 100 winter-warmers last July, with plans to match that tally or even exceed it at the next edition later in the year.

Tricia McGill used the time stuck in her property to get to work on novels number 21 and 22, Sweet Bitterness and When Destiny Calls.

When Destiny Calls drew inspiration from the pandemic, with the story beginning in

the early stages of the outbreak in March 2020 as the world began to shutdown before the main character travels back to 1940 as bombs rained down on London during the Blitz.

While Ms McGill is accustomed to spending long hours at her computer, she said that she found isolation from the other residents to be the most difficult part of lockdown.

“For me, the only thing that I missed was the social life that goes on here because we were in lockdown quite a bit,” Ms McGill said.

“For years, I spent an awful lot of my day just sitting at my computer, so to me, it’s just another day.

“The hardest thing was not being able to

have contact with other people.”

She was blown away by the display and the brilliance of her community.

“I cannot believe that there’s so many clever people here, and this is marvellous because it’s given them the chance to show what they can do.”

The Village plansto hold a market later in the year for members of the public to purchase some the communities’ contributions, such as Ms Nelson’s beanies and Ms McGill’s literature.

Hang onto your hearing It is a common misconception that hearing loss is an issue that is usually only faced by older people. However, hearing loss is certainly a huge issue for younger people.

The World Health Organisation reported that half of 12-35 year olds on the planet – over a billion people – are at risk of hearing loss because of over-exposure to loud sounds.

In Australia, there were about 3.6 million young people with hearing loss in 2017. According to Deloitte Access Economics, this figure will double in 40 years.

Many people included in this startling figure are going to be today’s kids, teens and young adults who spend extended time on headphones, listening to loud music or playing games.

Once hearing is gone, it’s really gone. However, steps can be taken to prevent hearing from getting worse.

To give context to just how loud we can unwittingly turn up a device’s volume when they’re already in a noisy environment such as a train, construction site, or loud crowd, try listening to the same volume level in a quiet room.

It’s very, very loud, and that noise is literally hurting your ears.

Try to limit the volume that you and your kids listen to music, watch television or play games at, whether it be through headphones or speakers.

Reducing background noise will make it easier for you to hear the audio you wish to lis-

ten to without needing to crank up the volume.

Noise-induced hearing loss is accumulative, so it can creep up on someone before they either notice or acknowledge it.

People around will notice a young person’s ‘deafness’, often attributing it to inattention or just a quirk.

But it’s very real and it may be happening right now. Check your own volume or have a chat with kids and friends, otherwise they might wind up with hearing aids long before their senior years.

The Victorian government backs our future farmers The Victorian government is backing secondary schools across the state to support more students with ambitions to embark on a career in agriculture.

Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas says the government is supporting educators to deliver new programs for students through the $5.5 million Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund.

The program is part of the government’s $30 million Future Agriculture Skills Capacity Fund, delivered by Agriculture Victoria in partnership with the Department of Education and Training, to support TAFEs and other education and training providers to develop students’ skills and carve

pathways into agriculture.

The Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund will help Victoria meet the demands of its growing farm, food and fibre sector, which needs more workers with digital, IT, business and marketing skills, plus food and fibre entrepreneurs who can take products to international markets.

Some $4.5 million will go towards investing in programs and resources that will boost pathways into agricultural careers, meeting the needs of communities and Victoria’s agricultural industries.

Funding will be available for a range of agriculture education activities that could include designing programs, engagement with

local industry, purchasing equipment and other identified school needs.

The Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund will also allocate $1 million in funding for tech schools to invest in state-of-the art resources and new technology to deliver online and outreach agricultural technology programs that meet the needs of industry as farming practices evolve.

The Future Agriculture Skills Capacity Fund is part of the government’s $50 million Agricultural College Modernisation Program supporting more Victorians to pursue exciting careers in agriculture.

The fund also supports the government’s broader reforms to vocational education, to

help every Victorian student to get the skills they need for the job they want, no matter their future goals.

The Future of Agriculture Training in Victoria Review was also launched in June to examine how the TAFE system can continue to meet the changing needs of Victoria’s growing agricultural industry.

Expressions of interest for the Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund opened for tech schools in late 2021.

Expressions of interest will open for secondary schools by mid-2022.

How to keep your kids safe from dangerous poisons Have you ever noticed that toddlers love to place everything that they find in their mouths, no matter what the object is or how hygienic it may beThis behaviour can start anywhere from as early as 2 months of age and is your little one’s way of exploring and learning about the environment around them.

Aside from the inconvenience of every item in your home being covered in drool, this natural curiosity and eagerness to explore can also lead them into danger, particularly if they come into contact with poisonous substances.

How common is childhood poisoning?

Every year in Australia over 1,800 children aged 0-14 years are admitted to hospital due to unintentional poisoning – that’s around 34 children every week.

Most incidents occur in children under the age of 5, with those aged 1-3 at greatest risk.

When the word poison is mentioned, many people think of dishwashing detergents, bleach and household cleaners – however, did you know that there is another substance that is more commonly involved in childhood poisoning incidents?

The most common cause of poisoning lives in many homes and bags.

The majority of child hospitalisations due to poisoning involve pharmaceuticals.

This can include over the counter medications such as paracetamol or cough and cold remedies, as well as prescription medications such as those used to treat blood pressure.

Poisoning incidents often occur due to unsupervised access, including when items such as medications are left out after being used or when they are stored in easily accessible locations such as handbags.

To children, medications can look like lollies, so they may think that they have just found Mum’s, Dad’s, or their grandparent’s secret stash of treats, not realising the dangers that these items can pose.

Don’t most of these products have child resistant packaging?

Many medications - along with other poisons such as household cleaners - come with child resistant lids or packaging. However, it’s important to remember that these are not child proof. They are made to be difficult for children to get into, but not impossible – you may even find that some kids can open them easier than adults can.

What can I do to reduce the risk?

The good news is that there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning from medications: Store all poisonous products out of sight and reach of children, at least 1.5 metres off the ground in a lockable cupboard

Lessons in sustainability Sustainability is a focus of many schools these days, with students often encouraged to engage in practices such as packing ‘nude’ lunches, recycling and switching off lights when not in use.

How can parents help encourage their kids to be sustainable students?

Here are eight tips from Sustainability Victoria: 1. Lunches - get the kids to make their own lunch and use containers suited to nude food, eliminating the need for disposable wrapping. If you do need to wrap, reusable beeswax wraps can be used. Find out about them online or do a course on making them at your local neighborhood house or community arts centre.

2. Make your own snacks - despite what they say, many kids have plenty of time on their hands. Teach them to make their own muesli bars and other snacks. Be patient, it’s a great life skill. They will learn to be more independent and have fun doing it!

3. Get more value - use the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website to get great recipes to use last night’s leftovers in exciting ways for school (and work) lunches.

4. Use what you’ve got - save money by digging out pens, pencils and other consumables from drawers, cupboards and bags, rather than buying new ones. Many stationery makers also have a range of notebooks made from recycled paper.

5. Textbooks and uniforms - most schools have

secondhand book and uniform shops, but your local op shop is also worth trying. Many high school English and literature books are available for free on Kindle. For other subjects, ask teachers what the difference is with this year’s version of a textbook compared with last year’s, as the older edition may still be suitable.

6. Walking or riding to school is a great way to stay fit. It saves fuel and reduces vehicle pollution and traffic jams at the school gate.

Otherwise, park a short distance from the school and walk with the kids and use it as an opportunity to teach road rules. Catching the bus may also be an option.

7. Buying a desk, bookcase or filing cabinet?

Second-hand office furniture shops often have very modern goods at a much better price than new and they will last. It is also worth checking out Facebook Marketplace for some great quality bargains.

8. Ask your school to join the ResourceSmart Schools program offered by Sustainability Victoria. Supporting schools within the state to embed sustainability measures across the school facilities, community and curriculum, once a school joins the program, it will have access to an online portal to learn and practice ways of integrating sustainability while also saving resources and money for the school.

Rock ‘n’ roll with Suzie Rockn’ Suzies dance classes are now in their 19th year teaching at Pakenham and Cranbourne.

Pakenham classes are held in the library complex on the corner of John and Henry streets.

The Cranbourne class is held at the Senior Citizens Hall on the corner of Codrington Street and the South Gippsland Highway Both nights offer beginner and advanced rock ‘n’ roll classes open to all with no partner required.

The program also includes a special class at the end of the night for partners only to learn some of the different styles associ-

ated with rock ‘n’ roll including swing, west coast, jive, triples, line and partner dances and cha cha.

The classes are designed to be fun and easy to follow for those aged 10 upwards.

Dancing is great for fitness, co-ordination, balance and memory, with many people forming great friendships through the classes.

Rockn’ Suzies also runs a monthly charity dance at the Pakenham Hall which has been running for 15 years. A different band plays each month. Everyone in the community is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Vandals foul footy club

By Marcus Uhe The Casey Comets Football Club has been left devastated after their facilities were broken into over the weekend of Sunday 20 February.

Electronics including laptops and televisions were stolen and damaged, while significant items of memorabilia were trashed and the facilities, including change rooms, fences and the pitch, suffered significant damage, including holes put in the wall.

Comets’ president Dawn Stone said the club’s hardworking volunteers were heartbroken.

“It’s a pretty demoralising thing to go through after the last two years,” Ms Stone said.

“We’re trying to rebuild a community service and then this has happened to us.

“The club has been so impacted by lockdowns. We’re literally rebuilding.

“The financial impact has been massive and it’s a cost that the club at the moment is not able to fund.”

Ms Stone described walking through ‘ankledeep’ broken glass in the kitchen the day after the attack as she struggled to comprehend the callousness of the offenders.

An extension to the function room at the club, which bore the brunt of the attack, was completed in recent years but the Comets had been unable to utilise it due to lockdowns.

The club has been damaged like this multiple times since Christmas, according to Ms Stone, and it’s beginning to take a toll on the club members and its community.

“It’s not so much the costs that upset me but it’s the wilful damage. It’s so hard to not take it personally.

“We’re (volunteers) putting in our own finances. We’ve lost sponsorships over the years and we’ve not had 20 per cent of our own income in the past couple of years.

“The people who did this don’t realise the human costs of their decisions.”

The Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating a burglary.

“Detectives are working to establish what property was stolen and the investigation is ongoing,“ police said.

Keys to business success Business has always been difficult right? So many things to think about: staff, customers, the competition, sales, marketing, the list goes on but now things appear to becoming even more challenging with the situation in Ukraine, rising inflation and an ever more mobile workforce. So how do business leaders navigate all of this?

Well, no business leader can be an expert in everything, but I believe there are five key things that if focused on, will help businesses chart their way through difficult waters: 1. Articulate and live by your desired company culture 2. Define goals 3. Create and actively use a budget 4. Systemise and automate 5. Engage a business advisor/coach The importance of defining and working towards your desired company culture cannot be overstated since it lies at the heart of everything in the business: the behaviours you expect from all leaders and staff, the level of service your customers can expect and it should be at the heart of all your key marketing messages (website, social media, brochures etc). Your company culture will be primarily defined through your articulated company values and using these to drive performance rather than ‘rules’ leads to a more empowered workforce and hence creates a more authentic company.

Having a realistic set of goals at every level of the business is importance since these define the targets for what needs to be achieved.

These should be specified in accordance with the SMART principle (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific) and the better these are stated, the more predictable the outcomes for the business. Remember, always keep these simple.

It never ceases to amaze me how many businesses don’t define a budget but it is not hard to do and is in essence simply an implementation of financial goal setting as

The beauty about a budget is that it is very easy to define and measure progress against, and the better this is done, the easier it is for companies to forecast where they will end up. While understanding how the business is performing financially is good, the often bigger benefit I see is that the increased predictability of the bottom line is a massive stress reliever since can turn the unknown into realistic expectations.

Not always high on businesses’ agenda, systemization and automation are typically only looked at when time and finances permit.

However, a business’ ability to grow is significantly impeded if the associated systems and processes do not evolve as day-to-day activities can often consume valuable staff time which could be used more effectively elsewhere. This is a classic area where the 80/20 principle should be applied, i.e. how can I achieve an 80% improvement by investing 20% of the effort?

As stated near the start of the article, no business leader can be an expert in everything, and we don’t know what we don’t know. This is where being open to new ideas and perspectives can bring significant benefits when a reputable and experienced business advisor can be engaged. As a former Managing Director myself, I can think of several occasions where I could really have done with an external sounding-board to provide advice and/or question my thinking as it would have prevented me from making some bad decisions.

Ashley the ace in the pack

By Tyler Lewis Ashley Chandrasinghe has a perpetual thirst for runs that simply can’t be fulfilled.

Casey-South Melbourne’s meticulous opening bat is in tantalising form, coming off five half-centuries in eight hits since Christmas for the Swans, to go with 112 and 91 not out for the Victorian Second XI last week.

Chandrasinghe’s meteoric rise to one of Victoria more promising talents has been extraordinary, given last Saturday’s clash with Northcote was just his 34th game of Premier Cricket.

Despite looking oh so comfortable for the Vics at Jubilee Park last week, the left-hander revealed the score-card was somewhat deceiving, as he felt the ball with his name on it was never far away.

“I didn’t really feel set until I was on 50 or so, I felt at every stage of the game in the first innings that every ball could still get me out,” he said.

“At the start the wicket was a bit tacky and the bowlers were moving it both ways, which I hadn’t been used to a lot.

“At that level I felt I was I never really set so I tried to stay sharp for every ball, I guess it helped me play every ball on its merits.

“There were times – especially in the first innings – where I thought ‘I could play a slightly risky shot to take the pressure off’, but I think it’s good to get through that with a consistent mindset.

“I batted on all four days so it was a bit weird in the second innings, because I am on zero (again), but I have just batted for a long time and was seeing them well.

“I just had the same mindset as the first innings, I might be on 80, 90 or 100, but each ball can get me out,” Chandrasinghe said.

When Victoria waved Chandrasinghe in, just nine runs short of twin-tons, cricket romantics were left scratching their heads, and though he admits a brace of centuries would’ve been a neat accomplishment, he knew the clock was ticking.

“We were trying to win the game and at lunch we were saying 10-12 more overs and we will declare,” he said.

“I was trying to bat a bit more positively and I got to 85-90, there were probably two more overs left and we lost a few wickets so I didn’t get too much strike from the last two overs.

I think I am good enough to adapt to the white ball to the success I do with the red ball, it is just one thing I need to work on, and I guess that will come with more games and more experience.” -Ashley Chandrasinghe “Unfortunately I couldn’t try to get the back-to-back. I didn’t have any problems with the declaration, they gave me notice that they were trying to declare 10-12 overs after lunch, it didn’t pose any questions with me”.

In just his two games for the Victorian Second XI, Chandrasinghe is yet to register a score below 56 and has top scored in each of the four innings.

And while the longer format is evidently one he flourishes in without trepidation, the Buckley Ridges junior doesn’t rule himself out of the white ball format, as he feels a trip north last winter and some clarity with the Swans this season is making the format all the more easier.

“Obviously I prefer and am more comfort-

able playing red ball (cricket),” he said.

“White ball for me has its challenges, but the last two seasons I have felt that I have had a pretty clear role for what the Swans want me to do, which is pretty much bat the full 50 overs.

“That has helped me in terms of clarity around my role. I feel like the two seasons have been helped by going to Darwin (during the winter) and playing a lot of white ball there as well.

“I have had a lot of white ball games under my belt now; it’s been good to get that experience in the white ball format.

“While I was over there, in the white ball I wasn’t opening, I felt that was good for my game.

“Having to start in a different positon of the game, I felt I had to push the game on straight away rather than getting yourself in and taking the game on from there.

“I had to be positive from the beginning which I feel has helped this season. In the T20s I wasn’t opening either, I had to close out innings and games which I found really challenging, but I succeeded in more games than I thought I would’ve,” Chandrasinghe said.

The next month looms as one of the more exciting ones to date for the Casey-South Melbourne prodigy, with the Swans entrenched in the Vic Premier Cricket premiership race, and the potential for further higher honours on the horizon.

Bell chimes in with Victorian title at Nyora Raceway

By Dean Thompson Nyora Raceway played host to the Victorian Formula 500 championship on Saturday night and the action did not disappoint as the class showcased their stars in both senior and junior class racing.

Jack Bell went on to claim his first Victorian F500 title and Tyler Maggs took out the junior final.

Local stars in Sedans also entertained race fans with Chris Miles winning the Standard Saloons, Sean Lister the Unlimited Sedans and Caleb Lincoln the Sports Sedan finals.

Qualifying for the Formula 500 title was across six heat races with Indy Rae, Hayden Pascoe, Brooke Buckingham, Jordy Rae, Dylan Willsher and Bell all taking race wins.

Willsher managed to record lap times just under the 14-second mark which was sensational speed for the class’s first time out on Nyora in 20-plus seasons.

Matt Turner, Willsher, and Kurt Dunham were just some of the drivers involved in crashes or other misfortune during the qualifiers before Alex Ryan, Bailey Stephens, Lauren Bowen, and Jack Nolan advanced via a last chance into the title race.

The 20-lap finale began with Bell, Pascoe, Jordy Rae, Jett Speed, Leigh van Ginneken and Brock Rae in the top six starting spots and others such as James McDonald back in twelfth. Swans the Dragon slayers

By Tyler Lewis It’s time to treat Casey-South Melbourne with the utmost respect.

The Swans continued on their merry way again on Saturday, maturely defeating a strong Northcote outfit.

The clash was one pencilled in about a month out, it was the clash that would determine whether the Swans were just beating good sides, or were a premiership threat.

And after Saturday, the answer is clear; this Swans outfit is a premiership contender.

With the potence of their batting side, there was no surprise the Dragons opted to bat after winning the toss, even if the pitch did have a bit of leaf on it.

And with a weakened bowling attack, the Swans were going to be tested, but they stood up to the occasion.

Nathan Lambden (3/22 off 9.1) got the ball rolling with the Swans first two wickets, as the big quick’s career best season gets better and better as the weeks roll by.

The Swans swiftly took the ascendancy of the game, by having the Dragons 6/52.

Northcote ultimately noodled its way to 162 – its lowest first innings total for the year.

The Swans had a few speed humps along the way in reply, but was guided by more runs from Ashley Chandrasinghe (52) and Ruwantha Kellepotha (32 not out) to win in the 42nd

The Swans went in without their front-line attack against a typically dominant batting side, on a typically dominant track.

But it was an untypical day, as the Swans spinners came through for coach Will Carr.

“It was probably the greenest wicket we have played on this season at home,” Carr laughed.

“They do tend to flatten, Jackson Fry was out suspended, Cal Dodson was out injured,

young Evan Allaway – who has played a few games – we thought it was best for his development if he played in the seconds.

“It was a matter of picking the best six bowlers available, we just had to work out the balance and strategy on the day.

“Probably not the ideal balance, but the best one we had available,” he said.

When he first laid his eyes on the Casey Fields track on Saturday morning, Carr would’ve had a chuckle, with a green deck and

four spinners in his selected side, but he felt in one day cricket they could sneak another tweaker in.

“In one day cricket you can probably get away with an extra spinner than the red ball game,” he said.

“Not the ideal balance, but that attack was high quality.

“We certainly feel that one of our strengths is definitely the depth in our bowling, you need to have six bowlers and we feel that our depth (of that six) is as good as anyone’s in the competition”.

The win for the Swans now has them in fourth position on the ladder and a serious threat come the pointy end of the season.

And while his side is pushing its case for the most in-form and unwanted finals opponent, Carr is keeping his eyes firmly on what his side is doing, avoiding what others may think of them.

“Maybe, I can’t speak for other sides,” he said.

“We feel internally we have some momentum going, we’re playing good cricket and we are getting contributions from all 11 players.

“How other sides see us, that’s up to them, but it is maybe a fair assessment.

“Maybe not fear, but certainly take us a little bit more seriously,” he said.

The Swans will travel to AH Butler Oval this Saturday to take on Frankston-Peninsula.

Ravi’s on a run rampage

By David Nagel The magnificent season of Carlisle Park (2/198) opener Ravi Kodithuwakku (129 not out) reached extraordinary new heights on Saturday with the gifted left-hander guiding the Vikings to a hugely-important victory over Cranbourne Meadows (9/196).

The sign of a great batter is performing when their side needs them most – and the Vikings really needed Kodithuwakku on the weekend.

The Vikings were not only chasing backto-back victories – their only two for the season – but were also hunting down a 197-run target that could see them avoid relegation.

Stuff this up and the Vikings were definitely back down in District Division next season.

Kodithuwakku responded in the style of a champion, cracking 13 fours and two sixes in an 89-ball journey that took his run-tally to 619 for the season.

Exceptional players like Pakenham’s Chris Smith (495) and Tooradin star Cal O’Hare (491) are having career-defining seasons… but Ravi is clearly at the top of the pile.

The ease of victory was unbelievable, with the Vikings cruising home with 12 overs left to bat.

It’s scary to think what Kodithuwakku might have finished on if those overs were allowed to be bowled!

Once again by Kodithuwakku’s side was Anurudda ‘Teddy’ Fonseka (56), who made his fourth-consecutive half-century – two of those unbeaten – to be one of the in-form players in the competition.

These two really do love batting together with partnerships of 70, 111, 47 and now 171 from four of their last five games.

The Vikings won easily in the end, but the pre-tea session was a classic with neither team conceding an inch in a tooth-and-nail battle to avoid relegation.

The Rebels innings started steadily enough through partnerships from Ajith Venkatesan (14), Khush Singh (15) and Harkamal Khokar (18)…but reached its high-point through the middle overs.

Pardeep Singh (43) dug in for the fight while inspirational skipper Sunny Paul (63 not out) scored a well-deserved first halfcentury of the season.

The Vikings would have been chasing a lot more in the second half of the day if not for the early efforts of Brendan McCarthy (2/17)…who slowed things down with the key wicket of Singh.

A win for either side this week will likely see them avoid relegation and stay in the topflight of West Gippsland cricket next seas.

Tooradin (7/243) is just one step away from winning the minor premiership after the Seagulls ‘big-three’ dismantled Clyde (94) at Tooradin.

Skipper Cal O’Hare (88) and Tom Hussey (43) were instrumental with the willow, while Russell Lehman (77 and 5/21) was extraordinary with both bat and ball. Dylan Sutton (2/5) and Brad Butler (2/17) were also important for the Gulls, while number-11 Liam Bennett (23 not out) saved the Cougars from utter embarrassment.

Kooweerup (175) star Chris Bright (69) led the second-placed Demons to victory over Merinda Park (8/166).

Bright, Cody Miller (30) and Steve Dillon (26) set up the victory despite some great bowling from Cobras’ Tyson Bertrand (4/34) and Josh Phillips (3/25).

Dustin Peebles (53 not out ) and Phillips (27) battled hard for the home side…but the Demons were too strong.

And third-placed Pakenham (8/135) has survived a low-scoring battle against Cardinia (115).

Dale Tormey (46) and Chris Smith (38) set things up for the Lions before Tom Brennan (3/23), Jason Williams (2/13) and Sean Gramc (2/27) tied things down after tea.

Pirates walk the plank and refuse to play at Perc Allison

By Lachlan Mitchell Beaconsfield was set to host Parkmore Pirates at Perc Alison Oval on Saturday but the game was eventually clouded in local cricket controversy.

Parkmore refused to play on the pitch presented to them after it was deemed safe by the umpires with Beaconsfield claiming all six points.

The Tigers went on to play a scratch match, and the pitch was used on Sunday with noissues.

But this remains a watch this space as the result is being disputed.

Cranbourne continue to hold its own at the top of the turf-two ladder after holding off a gallant Keysborough at Rowley Allen Reserve.

Keysborough felt the full brunt of Cranbourne bowler Peter Sweeney who clipped the Knights down to size taking 6/22.

his first 50-plus score of the season, making 63 and timing his finals form to perfection.

The Eagles found themselves reaching the target with 15 overs to spare.

The Keysborough loss gave Heinz Southern Districts the opportunity to firm up it’s spot in the final four.

Bottom placed Dandenong West was looking to finish off its season with a sense of optimism after a poor showing has seen them anchored to the bottom all-season.

The Bulls didn’t do themselves any favours losing opener Jibin Thomas for five. Thomas was trapped in front by Ryan Patterson.

The right-arm-quick was at his best taking 3/16 in a devastating performance helping dismiss the Bulls for a paltry 89.

Heinz didn’t get things its own way losing the wicket of opener Glenn Hamilton for a duck. The wicket brought Ethan French (37)

to the crease who contributed to help his side over the line by six wickets.

Parkfield continue to play the under-dog card this season. The Bears had a few hazards early in the season dropping points to Dandenong West but have bounced back.

Parkfield were looking to continue to fight for top spot when they faced Lyndale at home.

Parkfield opener Matthew Goodier (54) got the ball rolling for the home side.

Lyndale restricted the Bears to 162 with five multiple wicket-takers. Brendon Ash finishing with figures of 2/7.

Ash couldn’t replicate the dominance with the bat, bowing out for 11 at the top of the order. Nicholas Jeffery continued his stellar season taking 3/27 moving his season wicket tally to 11 for the season.

A clean sweep for Cranny CRANBOURNE BOWLS With Cranbourne crushing cross-town rivals Berwick by 38 shots it moved up the ladder to second spot with one week to go before finals.

Cranbourne are now guaranteed a finals birth but must win against fifth-placed Ferntree Gully to claim a home-rink final.

This week was a great success for the club with all five sides recording wins which had club President, Tony Collins in fine voice and humour celebrating with club members after the game.

In Mid-week bowls, Cranbourne top side must win if it wants to play finals after last week’s disappointing loss.

Next Saturday after the game the club is providing a chicken dinner for all club members and the club member’s jackpot draw will be won on the night.

SATURDAY PENNANT Side 1 - Division 2 Sec 5 A determined win against Berwick by 38 shots with three rinks up and one rink losing by one shot was almost the perfect result for Cranbourne.

Head coach Lyn Quigg was satisfied with the win but is now asking his players to find another gear with finals only one game away.

Skip Jay Tootell and his crew of Lynne Wood, Wayne ‘Spanky’ Stevens and Neil ‘Buddy’ Drummond won again by 15 shots as did Skip Jammie Corney and his crew of Joe Byrne, John Stanley and Matt Stevens while skip Lyn Quigg won by nine shots.

Cranbourne 92 (16 points) defeated Berwick 54 (2 points) Side 2 - Division 2 Sec 6 The blustery wind conditions at Carrum were no setback for this side thanks to Harry.

Skip Harry Van Soest and his crew of AJ Nair, Brian Gay and Fritz Helle won by 22 shots which was just enough to win overall by just one shot in a very exciting game.

Skip Nick Arnold won impressively by nine shots.

Cranbourne 78 (14 points) defeated Carrum 77 (4points) Side 3 - Division 3 Sec 6 It was windy conditions at Cardinia Waters but that was not a worry for hard working club barman and committee man Bob Dickson who led the way for his Skip John Gardner and team mates Derick Maguire and Tony Whalley who won by 11 shots, while skip Adam Pope continued his great form and won again this time by eight shots.

Saturday’s Blue Diamond Stakes Day at Caulfield proved to be a great day for the Cranbourne Training Complex producing three outstanding winners at Group level.

Lavish Girl took out the $300,000 Group-2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) for the Maher/Eustace camp and the team then took out the $750,000 Group-1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) with raging favourite, Marabi.

It was Marabi’s seventh win from seven starts with local jockey Ben Allen on board.

The Busuttin/Young team also took out the $750,000 Group-1 Futurity Stakes (1400m).

It was a resounding victory for proven group performer, Sierra Sue, who sustained a big sprint to leave her rivals in her wake.

Unfortunately, hot favourite, Jacquinot, had a luckless run to finish third in the Blue Diamond but we’re sure the colt has a bright future and will be back even stronger in the Spring.
