More than 100 people in the South East died during Covid’s Omicron-variant wave according to official data, and health authorities are calling for a booster-shot boost.

The Department of Health reported between 8 December 2021 and 21 February 2022, 56 Casey residents, 37 Greater Dandenong residents and eight in Cardinia Shire died with Covid-19.

The South East and the city’s North West suffered the most Covid-related deaths in greater Melbourne in that period.

There were also high fatalities in surrounding council areas such as Monash (48), Kingston (32) and Whitehorse (32).

In Melbourne’s North West, Brimbank (65

deaths), Whittlesea (47), Moreland (47) and Hume (35) suffered the highest tolls. More than 87 per cent of Victorians who died with Covid-19 in the reporting period were aged 70 and over.

The Omicron wave had hit Casey and Greater Dandenong hard – particularly in January.

In Casey, there were nearly 20,000 new Covid-19 cases reported between 3-23 January. In the same period, there were 9500 new cases in Greater Dandenong.

In the past week, Casey still recorded the most new Covid-19 cases in the state – recording 2500. In the same time, 650 Greater Dandenong residents contracted Covid-19.

Ex-journo’s health pivot

By Fiona Gowers As a rural reporter, interviews are rarely quick chats.

Tea and coffee are poured, family is met and life stories shared around the kitchen table.

Friendships are formed through the extreme highs and lows that only farm living can produce and, often, the urge to do more for subjects than simply share their stories of survival becomes too strong.

And, so it was for agricultural journalist Megan Gomez who for eight years reported on droughts, floods and fluctuating commodity prices for Victorian publications, the Pakenham Gazette, The Weekly Times and the Herald Sun. Seeing first-hand the mental health impact natural disasters had on individuals and families - and how difficult it was for them to access professional help - sowed the seed for Rural Health Connect.

Rural Health Connect is an online platform that links people in regional Australia with psychologists online using video-conferencing technology and, when needed, telephone.

It originated in central Queensland - where Ms Gomez later moved - in response to an urgent need for better access to mental health services and it has since expanded throughout the country.

“People living in remote areas deal with drought, bushfire, floods and isolation - on top of life’s other pressures - yet access psychologists at a fifth of the rate of city people,” Ms Gomez said.

“The lack of professionals in rural areas, long drives to appointments, lack of privacy in small towns and stigma are all deterrents to seeking help.

“We want everyone, regardless of where they live or their life circumstances, to be able to access the psychologist that is right for them.

“Waiting lists can be months long. If some-

one puts their hand up and asks for help they should be able to access it then and there. The need is huge.”

Launched in September 2019, Ms Gomez’s first big challenge was to develop software that streamlined the entire process, from appointment booking to consultation delivery.

“This was before Covid and before tele-

health, so we were creating what is now commonplace,” she said.

“But, we own the software now, it is unique to us and it is ever-evolving. It allows psychologists to have a profile on our website, which clients can view before they book their appointments.

“I think telehealth has helped enormously

in small rural communities where everyone knows everyone.

“People can see whose car is parked outside the one psychologist’s office in town and gossip starts from there. Telehealth offers privacy, which removes that barrier to accessing health services.”

Rural Health Connect now has more than 90 psychologists registered who, combined, complete hundreds of sessions per week.

General practitioners are available for mental health care plans and Ms Gomez has just introduced financial counsellors in the bushfireravaged areas of Queensland and Victoria as “a lot of emotional distress comes from financial hardship”.

“The health professionals on our platform are amazing,” she said.

“They have put up their hand because they want to be involved in helping rural communities through mental health challenges.

“They work in private practice and are mostly from rural areas so they have that background and interest and can really connect with those people in need.”

Ms Gomez said referrals to Rural Health Connect are received from “all over rural Australia” including from GPs, bushfire recovery support case workers, allied health agencies and word of mouth.

Bulk billing is available.

“We have high hopes for the growth of Rural Health Connect. It’s getting there now and I’m starting to feel the rewards of helping so many rural people access mental health services.

“Finding a way to pay the bills will be an ongoing challenge but the Queensland and Victorian Governments have been extremely supportive with grants and allowing us to source funds.”

Ms Gomez grew up in Tonimbuk, where her parents still live.

Doubts rise on waste plan

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Two councils have withdrawn support for a controversial advanced waste project servicing up to 14 East and South East municipalities.

Greater Dandenong council is expected to decide this month if it will sign up to the South East Metropolitan Advanced Waste Processing Project.

It is expected to include a waste-to-energy plant, which would incinerate rubbish at a yetto-be-announced site.

Glen Eira and Boorondara councils have recently decided not to commit to the 25-year contract. Meanwhile, only Casey and Whitehorse councils have so far signed up.

According to a Glen Eira council report, the project stated that the project tenderers required certainty of supply.

“If a majority of councils choose to not commit to the project, the project is unlikely to proceed.”

During a 22 February meeting, Glen Eira councillors narrowly voted down a motion to sign up.

Councillors baulked at locking in Glen Eira to provide a “minimum tonnage” waste supply for 25 years.

They were also concerned by the lack of community consultation, toxic emissions and a possible gate fee significantly higher than current landfill charges.

Against the motion, Cr David Zyngier said the contract would bind Glen Eira to forgoing newer technologies for a dated 40-year-old system.

It would also block opportunities to increase recycling and the council’s net zero carbon emissions by 2030 target.

The by-product would be “large amounts of toxic waste” that would have to be transported and disposed, as well as emissions in the atmosphere.

According to a Glen Eira council report, the SEMAWPP gate fee payable by 2026 would be up to $235 a tonne.

Great Southern Waste Technologies’ waste-to-energy plant has been approved for Dandenong South. However, GSWT is out of the race for the South East council consortium contract.

Currently, Glen Eira pays a $110 per tonne gate fee and Greater Dandenong $167.66 per tonne gate fee – which is adjusted annually with CPI. It includes the State Government’s EPA landfill levy, which is increasing from $105.90 to $120.90 in July.

The council report recommended advanced waste processing due to Glen Eira’s current landfill in Melbourne’s North West nearing capacity. The landfill was expected to close in 2026.

“Relying on landfill to dispose rubbish isn’t a sustainable long-term solution and landfills

across Victoria are progressively running out of airspace capacity.”

In favour, Cr Neil Pilling said it would provide “economic security for our community”.

To not proceed would put the council in a “terrible bargaining position”.

Greater Dandenong’s waste is taken to the Suez Hallam landfill, which is expected to close in five to eight years.

The SEMAWPP’s successful tenderer has yet to be chosen, nor the site for the advancedwaste facility.

A waste-to-energy plant is thought to be

part of the project, though the technology has yet to be decided.

Last year, a permit was controversially granted by EPA and VCAT to Great Southern Waste Technologies for a waste-to-energy plant in Ordish Road, Dandenong South.

Greater Dandenong Council was opposed to the facility.

However, GCWT did not make the shortlist of tenderers for the SEMAWPP. The shortlisted applicants are Veolia Environmental Services Australia Pty Ltd, Sacyr Environment Australia and a consortium of Pacific Partnerships and REMONDIS Australia.

Sikhs deliver flood relief

By Jamie Salter Devastating floods are ravaging NSW and Queensland homes, with major flooding occurring in Lismore.

Casey-based Sikh Volunteers Australia (SVA) are travelling to Lismore in northern NSW to provide freshly cooked vegetarian meals to those who have fled to evacuation centres.

Volunteers departed from Melbourne at 6am on Tuesday 1 March and travelled 22 hours straight until they reached Woolgoolga, NSW. Woolgoolga is home to The First Gurdwara of Australia, who have welcomed SVA and assisted with preparing meals for those in need.

SVA founder Jaswinder Singh arrived in Woolgoolga at 4am on Wednesday 2 March along with three more volunteers.

He said he has received non-stop requests for assistance.

“We didn’t stop at all and on the way we were trying to get information from the local community on what routes were open and where the help was most needed,“ Mr Singh said.

“Woolgoolga is unaffected at the moment but we were told if heavy rain occurs, then the situation could worsen.

“The situation in Lismore is devastating but unfortunately we don’t have any control over natural disasters,“ he said.

Local universities and secondary schools have been transformed into evacuation centres in Lismore and SVA members will travel the three hours from Woolgoolga to offer food relief to flood victims.

Further SVA volunteers will soon fly to NSW to join in the crisis response, with the volunteers planning to remain interstate for as long as they are needed.

The latest SVA developments will be published on the Sikh Volunteers Australia Facebook page.

Pop-up clinic saves lives

By Jamie Salter Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is saving lives with a pop-up donation centre to Narre Warren.

The donation centre launched on Monday 28 February and will collect donations until Friday 11 March.

“Over the course of the week, we’re hoping to collect around 975 donations,“ a Lifeblood spokesperson said.

“With every donation helping to save up to three lives, that’s nearly 3000 lives saved. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

“We still need around 170 additional donors to book in for this visit.“ The coronavirus pandemic has disturbed the number of donations that would usually be received in a year.

The pop up is located at the Narre Warren North Hall and will return from Monday 30 May to Friday 10 June, Monday 29 August to Friday 9 September and again from Monday 28 November to Friday 9 December.

Getting everyone I know away from their TV screens and into a live theatre or music venue as often as possible. Support the arts!

What do you love about what you do?

My job is incredibly social which suits my personality and I get to fundraise for an incredible organisation (Australian Red Cross).

Who is the best person you’ve worked with?

My beautiful friend Sandra who volunteered for Red Cross at our Bentleigh store. She was so sweet and kind and any time I walked in the door, she would greet me with a beautiful hug and I could just feel the incredible love she had for me and I know she would feel the same from me. She and I had an incredible connection and I miss her dearly. She passed away a couple of years ago.

What is your most memorable moment?

My first Burning Man Festival at Black Rock Desert in Nevada in 2016 where after a night out exploring all the art installations and incredible spaces, I was riding my bike back to my camp, completely lost and feeling the happiest I had ever been.

What would your last meal be?

My mum’s homemade pizza. It’s incredible!

What was your favourite subject in school?

Drama, of course.

What event past or present would you like to witness?

The first landing on the moon (with my own eyes and feet – I need real proof).

Which three guests, dead or alive, would you invite to dinner?

My dad (who has passed away) and my mum and sister so we can all have one last dinner together.

Dancer top of the class

By Shelby Brooks A Beaconhills College dancer is being recognised as one of the best in the state after receiving outstanding results in VCE Dance last year.

Berwick campus year 12 student Ruby Thornton-Mackay will perform her 2021 VCE skills-based dance solo in Top Class- part of the VCE Season of Excellence, managed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA).

The season presents 11 concerts by outstanding VCE performing arts students who have completed; Music Performance, Music Investigation, Music Style and Composition, VCE VET Music Industry, Dance, Drama and Theatre Studies.

Ruby said she was excited to have been chosen to perform at the Melbourne Recital Centre on 16 March.

After study scores came out last year, Ruby then had to perform her solos again to the judging panel who ultimately decided who would perform at Top Class.

“It was really lovely to get the call,“ she said.

“I am grateful and appreciative that I am able to express myself in this art form in a school and educational environment.“ Her solo showcases her choreography and artistic abilities as well as her strength, physical and technical skills.

Ruby has undertaken dance classes for 13 years at a ballet school and is currently a member of a Melbourne youth based contemporary company.

People urged to sign up for Clean Up Thousands of Australians nationwide have already signed up for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 6 March, but more people are urgently needed to address the country’s current waste crisis.

Clean Up Australia chairman Pip Kiernan said it’s more important than ever to get involved with Clean Up Australia Day. “Our environment is experiencing the impact of the pandemic,” Ms Kiernan said.

“We’re seeing a huge surge in single-use plastics and unprecedented numbers of face masks, takeaway coffee cups and food packaging littering our footpaths, parks and beaches.

“There’s no better time than right now to show that you care. While we have been encouraged by the strong interest from communities right across Australia, more rubbish is entering our environment by the day, so we need everyone to get involved.

“For every little bit that we all do on Sunday March 6, we are showing that we care and that we all have a role to play in protecting the environment around us.“ Registration is easy, and all community-based participants receive a free Clean Up kit, containing gloves and bags and other resources, with packs for individuals, families or groups available.

If you can’t join a Clean Up, Ms Kiernan urges Aussies to make a donation to Clean Up Australia.

All funds raised through donations are allocated to educational resources and clean up materials provided free of charge to community, school and youth groups across the nation, all year round.

Schools Clean Up Day will be on Friday 4 March.

Concerned by the number of South Sudanese girls entering the justice system, a youth worker has developed a program to help steer the young women down a more fruitful path.

Tempest Alphonse, from the Centre for Multicultural Youth, created the My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) program designed to empower girls aged 15-19 from the South Sudanese community build connections, make positive life choices and contribute positively to the community.

MSK will be run out of My Place Youth Centre Pakenham for girls across the wider South East.

Tempest engaged young girls from the South Sudanese community, as well as their parents, to work out how to best deliver the program.

“Pre-Covid-19, we had an over representation of girls from the South Sudanese community entering the justice system,” she said.

“In the South Sudanese community, older girls look after the younger siblings and help out the mothers a lot in the households.

“The concept of My Sister’s Keeper is to have that older female mentor for these young girls; a sister they can relate to. We’ve been through what they’ve been through and hopefully we

The program will see the mentor and mentee participate in activities and outings as well as skills based learning like budgeting, cooking and leadership.

“We want them to see if they are directed in another path, their lives are really going to be

successful,” Tempest said.

“If there are people supporting them and activities to keep them busy, maybe even if they get work as well, they can really have a fruitful life. “They have the heart but situations can be challenging.”

MSK will begin in March this year.

Parliament drives youth

By Jonty Ralphsmith Six African students across three schools in Melbourne’s South-East are channelling their passion to champion for equality.

Through participation in the Victorian youth parliament program, the students are seeking to destigmatise the violent, streetwandering perception of African Australians.

They instead want to demonstrate an image of respect, intellect and enthusiasm.

“A lot of Africans might walk down the street and get bad looks because the media shows Africans fighting but they don’t know our inner selves and what we’re capable of,” student Rethath Elghali said.

“So we want to show we’re educated and we can become doctors, we can become a lot more, we’re not just crackheads or gangsters – we’re not bad people.”

The youth parliament program has run for 35 years and accepts teams of six people aged between 16 and 25 years old.

The six students are in years 10 or 11 from Narre Warren P-12 College, Lyndale Secondary College and Cranbourne East Secondary College.

Participants are given the opportunity to explore social issues in society and debate their ideas with other teams around Victoria via a facilitated discussion in Victorian parliament in June.

The parliament seeks to build leadership skills and deepen students’ understanding of the political system and issues affecting society.

A greater representation of African Australian excellence in society, support for multicultural youth and social equality are among the issues that matter to these go-getters.

They will be given the opportunity to develop and deliver a bill on one topic.

If we have more people and more things that would help, us we would benefit,” student David Taiwo said.

“For example – some people might not be from here so we need to find somewhere we can fit in and feel comfortable we have people with us we can talk to so we can really fit in.”

Ladan Ahmed, one of the team’s resource persons, responsible for organising the students, works with 100 African Australians across the schools and welcomed the opportunity for the teens to express their intellect beyond the classroom.

“All our students are really creative in the

sense they understand and acknowledge the challenges, but they also have solutions and they’re very creative and innovative on what they need to battle and face these challenges,” Ms Ahmed said.

“They’re very big on all these aspects and ideas on what we need rather than sitting back and arguing about what we don’t have.”

The students will be paired with a mentor to discuss their ideas and will also meet semifrequently before a training weekend in May and the parliament sitting from Monday 27 June until Wednesday 29 June.

There is a competitive application process

to be accepted into the program, with only 20 teams admitted per year, and scrutiny was also placed on the six students that school community liaison officers Ms Ahmed and Mukasa Monga chose to accept onto the team.

“I see the potential in all these students on a daily basis and just seeing all their viewpoints of changes they want to make within their community makes me feel like we have the next generation of voices who should be making the decisions and policies and laws for us,” Ms Ahmed said.

Student Danya Daoud was motivated to give her culture a voice that may not otherwise be heard.

“Having such an African Australian saturated group, we can get more views from different African Australian individuals in the community whereas in another group where there is only one to two, everything would be based on experiences of those perspectives,” she said.

“We can collaborate and voice what we experience and solutions to that which will better reach the African Australian community.

“We’re not only empowering the African Australian community; truly we’re empowering all people of colour because at the end of the day we are the minority here in Australia,” Danya said.

One of the criterion for the group applications is ensuring the team is reflective of the diversity of youth around Victoria but program director Tessa Buchanan is not aware of another team ever being made up exclusively of African Australians.

“I’ve been (involved) for five years and I was really excited when I received the application because they had a very specific representation of African culture that we don’t necessarily get,” Ms Buchanan said.

“I was excited for them to bring experiences and perspectives to the program.”

Camps back on track School camps are back in full swing at Beaconhills College and students couldn’t be happier.

After two years of disruptions due to pandemic lockdowns, the College’s Beacon Explorers began running activities late last year in preparation for the return to overnight camps in term one.

Beacon Explorers programs give students challenging experiences to help them discover, develop and achieve their potential and encompass all outdoor, global and co-curricular programs from the Early Years to Year 12.

In February, Berwick Campus Year 7 students were excited to head out to Gembrook’s Gilwell Park for three days of mountain bike riding, an adventure course, hiking and canoeing.

Students particularly loved the water activities, exploring and their downtime at night with bush movie nights and popcorn.

“It is so good seeing kids back out here, it’s the best feeling,” said Beacon Explorers’ outdoor education coordinator Peta Lawler.

Children in Grade 3 enjoyed a day camp at Gilwell Park late in term three, based around the theme of reconnecting, wellbeing, fun and foundation, with a focus on reconnecting after a challenging lockdown period.

Hudson Foord, Year 4, loved being in the great outdoors again.

“It felt great because we had just been in Covid (lockdown) and last year we didn’t get any camps or excursions,” he said.

“I learnt how to be part of a team and that slow and steady wins the race. I had so much fun and am looking forward to more camps.”

With the pandemic still impacting some of Beaconhills’ traditional international trips, the Beacon Explorers’ team has been busy devising a range of experiential options for students throughout the year.

This year’s camps will include destinations such as The Grampians, Jindabyne/Canberra, Anglesea, the Great South West Walk near Portland, Bright and Mt Buffalo, with a huge range of activities and challenges – from hiking to abseiling and kayaking, with a focus on leader-

Head of Beacon Explorers Sam Maddock said the team was mindful that students had spent months in lockdown and had missed some of the skills they would normally have gained in the past two years.

But he pointed to a review commissioned by the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV), which has outlined the growing body of evidence that time spent in nature is good for us – physically, mentally and emotionally.

The RBGV review sought to better understand and harness global studies on the relationship between nature, health and wellbeing.

It cited research exploring the impact of nature experiences for children, showing that access to green space not only “facilitates healthy development in childhood, but also provides long-term health benefits through adulthood”.

There was also evidence that green space was linked to reduced problematic behaviour and reduced risk of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the review said. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Berwick show must go on

By Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society President Noelene King The weather, the entries, the support and the outcome could not have been better for the 2022 Berwick and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society livestock and pavilion event, which was held over the last weekend in February when we staged the judging of many of the traditional events usually held at our annual show.

The craft and cooking arrived Friday and was judged Saturday, and the show jumping fraternity rolled in on Saturday for two full days of exciting competition.

The poultry arrived Saturday morning as did sheep, dog flyball and the cattle started arriving mid-morning for an afternoon workshop.

The junior handlers and heifer show was followed by traditional judging on Sunday along with the goats who enjoyed being judged under the shade of the trees.

Whilst, as a society, we chose to respect the safety of our exhibitors with regard to Covid-19, it was evident by the enjoyment felt by exhibitors that we had made the right decision.

Thank you to the freemasons who carried out Covid-19 checking on the gates and to the many committee members who worked to bring the weekend together with setup and pull down.

We had non-committee people working to ensure our success and many stewards and judges who came to officiate.

We hope you enjoyed the live streaming of some of our events and thanks to Leigh from Tech Support Melbourne and Alex Stojan and team, and you happily view the photos that are still to be uploaded over the next couple weeks.

We had life members travel down from northern Victoria to work at Akoonah Park during the week and members of the Akoonah Park Committee of Management and the Dandenong Show Society all helping to ensure we held a great event.

The committee is now working towards a successful open horse show on Monday 14 March.

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

“They need to have their plaques removed

“They’ve disgraced themselves and they’ve disgraced the council. They’ve taken something away from me that I totally enjoyed. I loved serving the Casey community. I just want some clarity as to what way it’s going to go.”

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

“I want to get back into serving the community again. I want to run again and I want to get my name back on the honour board for the right reasons. At the moment it’s a dishonour board,” he said.

Star News understands Mr Flannery has put forward his request to be heard by the administrators at the next council meeting, slated for Tuesday 2 February.“It’s up to them now but a year later, this is still eating at me. I need closure and this is one way that I can get it,“ he said.

The women’s only information session will focus on breast cancer and general women’s health with an interpreter translating for local Dari women.

English is not the first language for these women and many don’t know where to go for help within their community.

The information session will cover a number of topics to give Dari speakers the tools and resources they need.

Casey kids Sea and Care

By Jonty Ralphsmith Eleven schools in the City of Casey are involved in the I Sea I Care marine ambassador program in 2022, seeking to foster an appreciation for preserving the marine environment and develop leadership skills.

There are a handful of students, known as ambassadors, from each participating school, mostly in years five and six, who take part in workshops each term.

Excursions to Seal Rocks at Phillip Island and swimming with dolphins are the highlights as the Dolphin Research Institute, the organisation that runs the program, emphasises the significance of practical education.

“You can’t put a price on experiential learning,” said I Sea I Care education director Mandy Robertson.

“It immerses them in the very issues, causes and solutions we’re trying to teach them about – just going to a classroom and talking is really dry so I want them to see their environment.”

The students learn how to deliver interactive lessons to their peers early in the year to raise awareness about sustainability around the school, while also developing the ambassadors’ public speaking.

“We obviously use the marine environment as our focus but the program is designed to develop the students as leaders in whatever they want to pursue,“ Mandy said.

“Obviously we hope they will continue to be advocates for the marine environment but it could lead them in lots of different ways because [the program] helps develop the students as future leaders or strong social justice champions.”

At most schools there is an application process to be involved in the program, and Strathaird Primary School students, Lyra, Sarah, Theodore, River, and Azaria were announced as 2022’s ambassadors at an assembly at the end of last year.

“To be a marine ambassador will be a good honour,” Lyra said.

“I’m excited to expand my knowledge and I think I could help our school keep our water nice and clean, reduce the rubbish going into the pond and help the school help the environment.”

Straithard Primary School sustainability teacher Renee Van Styn said students at the school were bringing knowledge they had learned at the program into the classroom.

“The kids have been immensely receptive,” Ms Van Styn said.

“They really love it and want [the ambassadors] to come back to their room all the time so it’s extremely popular and you hear the language coming back in the sustainability class – you can tell they have the learning and understanding from what they’ve done with the marine ambassadors.“

Mandy said they were a welcome addition and beyond what could be covered by the inperson program but was looking forward to getting back in to the environment in 2022.

Supporting long Covid in children What is long Covid in children?

While there is no standard definition of long Covid, and the syndrome itself is quite variable, having symptoms that persist for more than 28-30 days following the onset of Covid is increasingly being labelled as long Covid in medical literature. Long Covid may be relapsing and remitting in nature. Post viral symptoms are known to exist following other viral infections including Epstein Barr virus and Ross River fever virus. What actually causes persistent symptoms following viral infections, including covid, remains the focus of researchers. The viral infection persisting itself is not as likely, other theories include chronic inflammation, blood flow disturbances or nervous system damage.

The most common reported symptoms are headache, fatigue, sleep disturbance, concentration difficulties, low mood, abdominal pain, muscle or joint pain, congested or runny nose, cough, chest tightness or pain, loss of berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

appetite or weight, disturbed smell or anosmia, and rash6. In most of the studies on children, symptoms did not persist longer than 12 weeks2.

In Australia thus far our statistics for children with long covid seems to fare a lot better that did European countries in 2021, this may be due to different covid strains. However, in Australia we do not currently have definitive information on how many children this can affect and how long it can last. One Victorian study on children found 8% of 151 children had mostly mild infections had some persistent symptoms for up to 8 weeks. Apparently, all these children fully recovered by 3-6 months4. 3-6 months is still a long time to recover from an infection, and this poses the question how can we support long Covid?

What might improve long Covid in children?

This first question I ask with post viral infections, as a Naturopath, is regarding a history of low vitamin D in the child or parents. The

role of vitamin D is important in the prevention and reduced severity of viral infections in children (by modulating the immune response to the virus) particularly in those that are low in vitamin D3. Other important immune nutrients that may need assessment include zinc selenium and vitamin A, all of which have an important role in healthy immunity and supporting lung and throat tissue.

Certain probiotics may be useful for long Covid such as bifidobacterium based probiotics as these boost immunity.

For a lingering cough specific herbs that may be of benefit include Marshmallow root, Myrrh, Licorice, Ivy leaf, and Elderberry5. Always check with your health care professional when giving herbs to children especially children under 4 years old. For reduced energy and other long Covid symptoms herbs and nutrients may need to be individually selected by a Naturopath or relevant health care professional, however it is worth mentioning several products are available to support the mitochondria and reduce inflammation.

Explaining Covid to kids While we’ve been living in a pandemic for almost two, children begin to notice changes at different ages.

And while we are about to move into Covid-19 normal, there are still outbreaks and isolation periods kids need to understand.

Kids who were babies when the pandemic first came in are now starting to talk and take much more notice of what is happening around them.

And those who were toddlers when it begun are now at kinder or primary school and learning to live with remote learning at times.

It’s important to try to limit the confusion about what is happening and take into consideration their feelings when talking about social distancing and lockdowns with your children.

Raisingchildren.net.au says children will cope better if they have accurate, age-appropriate information about Covid-19 , physical

distancing and self-isolation.

They also need plenty of opportunities to ask questions and talk about feelings. The steps below can help you talk through this situation with your preschooler or school-age child.

The government funded website says the following tips can help make sure your child feels supported.

1. Make time to talk about COVID-19, physical

distancing and self-isolation 2. Use a calm and reassuring tone 3. Find out what your child knows about physical distancing and self-isolation 4. Explain physical distancing and self-isolation in a way your child understands 5. Tune into your child’s feelings about physical distancing and self-isolation And remember – if you’re all well, plenty of cuddles can help you all feel better.

Emphasising respect

Respect... the state has launched a new policy to foster respectful relationships between parents/carers and school staff.

A concerning rise in incidents of aggression towards school staff from parents and carers has sparked policies and resources to promote respectful behaviours in schools.

The state’s new ’Respectful Behaviours within the School Community Policy’ sets out guidelines on the expected standards of behaviour for parents, carers and other adults in the school community.

The policy aims to reduce the risk and incidence of work-related violence towards school staff, ensuring all education workers feel safe and supported at work.

It includes strategies and resources to help schools prevent and manage unacceptable behaviours from parents and carers.

Posters and communication materials are being provided to schools to communicate the new policy – and the expectations around adult behaviours.

Education Minister James Merlino said school leaders and staff had been incredible throughout the pandemic and deserved to

be treated with respect.

“This important work is about keeping schools safe and supporting staff to make sure schools are places where everyone feels safe and respected – creating an environment where students can thrive,“ he said.

The policy and resources are linked to the state government’s recently passed Education and Training Reform Amendment (Protection of School Communities) legislation, which strengthens protections for school staff against parent and carer aggression.

A School Community Safety Order scheme will be introduced to all schools in mid-2022, allowing school principals to issue safety orders in response to harmful, threatening, abusive or disruptive behaviour at work.

These new laws will also allow schools to prohibit parents and carers from engaging in threatening or abusive communication through social media and other channels.

Hang onto your hearing It is a common misconception that hearing loss is an issue that is usually only faced by older people. However, hearing loss is certainly a huge issue for younger people.

The World Health Organisation reported that half of 12-35 year olds on the planet – over a billion people – are at risk of hearing loss because of over-exposure to loud sounds.

In Australia, there were about 3.6 million young people with hearing loss in 2017. According to Deloitte Access Economics, this figure will double in 40 years.

Many people included in this startling figure are going to be today’s kids, teens and young adults who spend extended time on headphones, listening to loud music or playing games.

Once hearing is gone, it’s really gone. However, steps can be taken to prevent hearing from getting worse.

To give context to just how loud we can unwittingly turn up a device’s volume when they’re already in a noisy environment such as a train, construction site, or loud crowd, try listening to the same volume level in a quiet room.

It’s very, very loud, and that noise is literally hurting your ears.

Try to limit the volume that you and your kids listen to music, watch television or play games at, whether it be through headphones or speakers.

Reducing background noise will make it easier for you to hear the audio you wish to lis-

ten to without needing to crank up the volume.

Noise-induced hearing loss is accumulative, so it can creep up on someone before they either notice or acknowledge it.

People around will notice a young person’s ‘deafness’, often attributing it to inattention or just a quirk.

But it’s very real and it may be happening right now. Check your own volume or have a chat with kids and friends, otherwise they might wind up with hearing aids long before their senior years.

The Victorian government backs our future farmers The Victorian government is backing secondary schools across the state to support more students with ambitions to embark on a career in agriculture.

Agriculture Minister Mary-Anne Thomas says the government is supporting educators to deliver new programs for students through the $5.5 million Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund.

The program is part of the government’s $30 million Future Agriculture Skills Capacity Fund, delivered by Agriculture Victoria in partnership with the Department of Education and Training, to support TAFEs and other education and training providers to develop students’ skills and carve

pathways into agriculture.

The Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund will help Victoria meet the demands of its growing farm, food and fibre sector, which needs more workers with digital, IT, business and marketing skills, plus food and fibre entrepreneurs who can take products to international markets.

Some $4.5 million will go towards investing in programs and resources that will boost pathways into agricultural careers, meeting the needs of communities and Victoria’s agricultural industries.

Funding will be available for a range of agriculture education activities that could include designing programs, engagement with

local industry, purchasing equipment and other identified school needs.

The Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund will also allocate $1 million in funding for tech schools to invest in state-of-the art resources and new technology to deliver online and outreach agricultural technology programs that meet the needs of industry as farming practices evolve.

The Future Agriculture Skills Capacity Fund is part of the government’s $50 million Agricultural College Modernisation Program supporting more Victorians to pursue exciting careers in agriculture.

The fund also supports the government’s broader reforms to vocational education, to

help every Victorian student to get the skills they need for the job they want, no matter their future goals.

The Future of Agriculture Training in Victoria Review was also launched in June to examine how the TAFE system can continue to meet the changing needs of Victoria’s growing agricultural industry.

Expressions of interest for the Secondary Schools Agriculture Fund opened for tech schools in late 2021.

Expressions of interest will open for secondary schools by mid-2022.

School journey underway Foundation students at Don Bosco Primary school are off to a flying start this year, thanks to a focus on wellbeing and transition.

The first day of primary school is a very special occasion for students and their parents, and with good reason.

Once a child puts on their school uniform for the first time, feelings of excitement, pride and some trepidation abound…and that’s just the parents!

This soft start to the morning alleviated many nerves and helped students to transition positively to the school day.

Teachers have also made an effort to include parents in the day-to-day activities of the classroom by creating videos of classroom activities that were shared on a digital platform.

These videos provided parents with a snapshot of life at school, and gave them an opportunity to see their child settled and happily enjoying classroom activities.

In addition to this, a focus on social skills, developmental play and creating a positive classroom culture have all contributed to a fantastic start to the school year.

These students and their families are certainly well placed to take on the rest of their foundation year at school.

Moving forward in ‘22 at Berwick Lodge

By Henry Grossek, Principal, Berwick Lodge Primary School A question I am frequently asked as we move through, what is now the third year of this pandemic is, “how are the children doing?” It is quite a straightforward question, yet in being so, answers are multi-layered.

There’s been a lot of media coverage on this question with evidence indicating that some children are doing well, others struggling to varying degrees both academically and mentally. In short, as would be expected, the impact of the pandemic on children has

been varied, with predictions of long- term consequences being varied, depending on many factors.

What I’ve noticed at our school is that the vast majority of children have bounced back well from the moment they have returned to school. Just being at school, interacting with their friends and returning to the familiarity of their school routines has been incredibly therapeutic for them, and by extension school staff.

By the way, that’s not to ignore the very real negative impact on some children, both

socially and academically. For those children it is vital that schools, ours included, work very closely with their families in rebuilding the educational framework for them. That’s most certainly a significant challenge and one in which we cannot afford to fail.

The lesson to be learnt from the positive ‘bounce-back’ to school by the bulk of students is that as adults, in our role as custodians of children’s education and wellbeing, parents and teachers, we can at times underestimate children’s capabilities. Children feed off our emotions - that’s worth remembering too.

Lessons in sustainability Sustainability is a focus of many schools these days, with students often encouraged to engage in practices such as packing ‘nude’ lunches, recycling and switching off lights when not in use.

How can parents help encourage their kids to be sustainable students?

Here are eight tips from Sustainability Victoria: 1. Lunches - get the kids to make their own lunch and use containers suited to nude food, eliminating the need for disposable wrapping. If you do need to wrap, reusable beeswax wraps can be used. Find out about them online or do a course on making them at your local neighborhood house or community arts centre.

2. Make your own snacks - despite what they say, many kids have plenty of time on their hands. Teach them to make their own muesli bars and other snacks. Be patient, it’s a great life skill. They will learn to be more independent and have fun doing it!

3. Get more value - use the ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ website to get great recipes to use last night’s leftovers in exciting ways for school (and work) lunches.

4. Use what you’ve got - save money by digging out pens, pencils and other consumables from drawers, cupboards and bags, rather than buying new ones. Many stationery makers also have a range of notebooks made from recycled paper.

5. Textbooks and uniforms - most schools have secondhand book and uniform shops, but your local op shop is also worth trying. Many high school English and literature books are available for free on Kindle. For other sub-

6. Walking or riding to school is a great way to stay fit. It saves fuel and reduces vehicle pollution and traffic jams at the school gate.

Otherwise, park a short distance from the school and walk with the kids and use it as an opportunity to teach road rules. Catching

the bus may also be an option.

7. Buying a desk, bookcase or filing cabinet?

Second-hand office furniture shops often have very modern goods at a much better price than new and they will last. It is also worth checking out Facebook Marketplace for some great quality bargains.

8. Ask your school to join the ResourceSmart Schools program offered by Sustainability Victoria. Supporting schools within the state

to embed sustainability measures across the school facilities, community and curriculum, once a school joins the program, it will have access to an online portal to learn and practice ways of integrating sustainability while also saving resources and money for the school.

How to keep your kids safe from dangerous poisons Have you ever noticed that toddlers love to place everything that they find in their mouths, no matter what the object is or how hygienic it may beThis behaviour can start anywhere from as early as 2 months of age and is your little one’s way of exploring and learning about the environment around them.

Aside from the inconvenience of every item in your home being covered in drool, this natural curiosity and eagerness to explore can also lead them into danger, particularly if they come into contact with poisonous substances.

How common is childhood poisoning?

Every year in Australia over 1,800 children aged 0-14 years are admitted to hospital due to unintentional poisoning – that’s around 34 children every week.

Most incidents occur in children under the age of 5, with those aged 1-3 at greatest risk.

When the word poison is mentioned, many people think of dishwashing detergents, bleach and household cleaners – however, did you know that there is another substance that is more commonly involved in childhood poisoning incidents?

The most common cause of poisoning lives in many homes and bags.

The majority of child hospitalisations due to poisoning involve pharmaceuticals. This can include over the counter medications such as paracetamol or cough and cold remedies, as well as prescription medications such 20 STAR NEWS

as medications are left out after being used or when they are stored in easily accessible locations such as handbags.

To children, medications can look like lollies, so they may think that they have just found Mum’s, Dad’s, or their grandparent’s secret stash of treats, not realising the dangers that these items can pose.

Don’t most of these products have child resistant packaging?

Many medications - along with other poisons such as household cleaners - come with child resistant lids or packaging. However, it’s important to remember that these are not child proof. They are made to be difficult for children to get into, but not impossible – you may even find that some kids can open them easier than adults can.

What can I do to reduce the risk?

The good news is that there are some simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of accidental poisoning from medications: Store all poisonous products out of sight and reach of children, at least 1.5 metres off the ground in a lockable cupboard If medicines need to be kept in the fridge, use a small, lockable container for them Always read instructions carefully and return all poisonous products to their safe storage area immediately after use Administer medication in a well-lit room

· Take the product container with you to the phone – the poisons information centre will want to know what ingredients are in the product. as those used to treat blood pressure.

You can contact your local pharmacy for advice on how and where you can do this safely What should I do if I think my child has ingested a poisonous substance?

If you think your child may have ingested a poisonous substance: Call the Poisons Information Centre straight away on 13 11 26 (24 hours a day, 7 days a week, Australia wide). Keys to business success Business has always been difficult right? So many things to think about: staff, customers, the competition, sales, marketing, the list goes on but now things appear to becoming even more challenging with the situation in Ukraine, rising inflation and an ever more mobile workforce. So how do business leaders navigate all of this?

Well, no business leader can be an expert in everything, but I believe there are five key things that if focused on, will help businesses chart their way through difficult waters: 1. Articulate and live by your desired company culture 2. Define goals 3. Create and actively use a budget 4. Systemise and automate 5. Engage a business advisor/coach The importance of defining and working towards your desired company culture cannot be overstated since it lies at the heart of everything in the business: the behaviours you expect from all leaders and staff, the level of service your customers can expect and it should be at the heart of all your key marketing messages (website, social media, brochures etc). Your company culture will be primarily defined through your articulated company values and using these to drive performance rather than ‘rules’ leads to a more empowered workforce and hence creates a more authentic company.

Having a realistic set of goals at every level of the business is importance since these define the targets for what needs to be achieved.

These should be specified in accordance with the SMART principle (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-specific) and the better these are stated, the more predictable the outcomes for the business. Remember, always keep these simple.

It never ceases to amaze me how many

The beauty about a budget is that it is very easy to define and measure progress against, and the better this is done, the easier it is for companies to forecast where they will end up. While understanding how the business is performing financially is good, the often bigger benefit I see is that the increased predictability of the bottom line is a massive stress reliever since can turn the unknown into realistic expectations.

Not always high on businesses’ agenda, systemization and automation are typically only looked at when time and finances permit.

However, a business’ ability to grow is significantly impeded if the associated systems and processes do not evolve as day-to-day activities can often consume valuable staff time which could be used more effectively elsewhere. This is a classic area where the 80/20 principle should be applied, i.e. how can I achieve an 80% improvement by investing 20% of the effort?

As stated near the start of the article, no business leader can be an expert in everything, and we don’t know what we don’t know. This is where being open to new ideas and perspectives can bring significant benefits when a reputable and experienced business advisor can be engaged. As a former Managing Director myself, I can think of several occasions where I

Ashley the ace in the pack

By Tyler Lewis Ashley Chandrasinghe has a perpetual thirst for runs that simply can’t be fulfilled.

Casey-South Melbourne’s meticulous opening bat is in tantalising form, coming off five half-centuries in eight hits since Christmas for the Swans, to go with 112 and 91 not out for the Victorian Second XI last week.

Chandrasinghe’s meteoric rise to one of Victoria more promising talents has been extraordinary, given last Saturday’s clash with Northcote was just his 34th game of Premier Cricket.

Despite looking oh so comfortable for the Vics at Jubilee Park last week, the left-hander revealed the score-card was somewhat deceiving, as he felt the ball with his name on it was never far away.

“I didn’t really feel set until I was on 50 or so, I felt at every stage of the game in the first innings that every ball could still get me out,” he said.

“At the start the wicket was a bit tacky and the bowlers were moving it both ways, which I hadn’t been used to a lot.

“At that level I felt I was I never really set so I tried to stay sharp for every ball, I guess it helped me play every ball on its merits.

“There were times – especially in the first innings – where I thought ‘I could play a slightly risky shot to take the pressure off’, but I think it’s good to get through that with a consistent mindset.

“I batted on all four days so it was a bit weird in the second innings, because I am on zero (again), but I have just batted for a long time and was seeing them well.

“I just had the same mindset as the first innings, I might be on 80, 90 or 100, but each ball can get me out,” Chandrasinghe said.

When Victoria waved Chandrasinghe in, just nine runs short of twin-tons, cricket romantics were left scratching their heads, and though he admits a brace of centuries would’ve been a neat accomplishment, he knew the clock was ticking.

“We were trying to win the game and at lunch we were saying 10-12 more overs and we will declare,” he said.

“I was trying to bat a bit more positively and I got to 85-90, there were probably two more overs left and we lost a few wickets so I didn’t get too much strike from the last two overs.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t try to get the back-to-back. I didn’t have any problems with the declaration, they gave me notice that they

I think I am good enough to adapt to the white ball to the success I do with the red ball, it is just one thing I need to work on, and I guess that will come with more games and more experience.” -Ashley Chandrasinghe were trying to declare 10-12 overs after lunch, it didn’t pose any questions with me”.

In just his two games for the Victorian Second XI, Chandrasinghe is yet to register a score below 56 and has top scored in each of the four innings.

And while the longer format is evidently one he flourishes in without trepidation, the Buckley Ridges junior doesn’t rule himself out of the white ball format, as he feels a trip north last winter and some clarity with the Swans this season is making the format all the more easier.

“Obviously I prefer and am more comfortable playing red ball (cricket),” he said.

“White ball for me has its challenges, but the last two seasons I have felt that I have had a pretty clear role for what the Swans want me to do, which is pretty much bat the full 50 overs.

“That has helped me in terms of clarity around my role. I feel like the two seasons have been helped by going to Darwin (during the winter) and playing a lot of white ball there as well.

“I have had a lot of white ball games under my belt now; it’s been good to get that experi-

ence in the white ball format.

“While I was over there, in the white ball I wasn’t opening, I felt that was good for my game.

“Having to start in a different positon of the game, I felt I had to push the game on straight away rather than getting yourself in and taking the game on from there.

“I had to be positive from the beginning which I feel has helped this season. In the T20s I wasn’t opening either, I had to close out innings and games which I found really challenging, but I succeeded in more games than I thought I would’ve,” Chandrasinghe said.

The next month looms as one of the more exciting ones to date for the Casey-South Melbourne prodigy, with the Swans entrenched in the Vic Premier Cricket premiership race, and the potential for further higher honours on the horizon.

Green and gold Lawton sets her sights on Birmingham

By Lachlan Mitchell Amy Lawton is once again preparing to represent Australia on the big stage as she sets her sights on the Commonwealth Games and the Hockey World Cup. The 20-year old girl from Emerald represented the green-and-gold in the postponed Tokyo Olympics at just 19, and has gone from strength-to-strength since finding the sport at a young age.

“I started playing when I was eight and it was in my school newsletter and my parents thought that my sister and I would enjoy the game,” Lawton said.

Lawton was the fourth-youngest Hockeyroo to represent Australia at an Olympics.

“Eight year-old Amy didn’t think she would be running around for Australia, but as I got older and made a lot of junior-statesides I thought I’m actually not-bad at this and maybe I could make it one-day,” she said.

Covid has made preparation and the opportunity to train and play with her team mates difficult with the Hockey High Performance unit based in Western Australia.

“No international games against other countries have made it tricky, pre-Olympics we only played against New Zealand five

times,” Lawton said.

“In Australia we don’t have as many countries around us like people in Europe...we can’t just drive to another country.”

Amy made her international debut in 2019 against New Zealand where she helped her

side to a 5-1 victory.

Lawton scored her first goal in an Olympic test event in Tokyo contributing to her sides win over the home side 2-1.

“It was pretty amazing for the Tokyo Olympics to go ahead, I was pretty thankful for the opportunity to be part of the team,” she said.

“For me being my first Olympics, it was good to see the additional pressure that an Olympics can bring.”

The Hockeyroos Olympic campaign came to an abrupt halt after a 1-0 loss to India in the quarter final.

“It obviously wasn’t the result the Hockeyroos were looking for not getting a medal, but it does light a fire in your belly for the next big occasion with the Commonwealth Games and the Hockey World Cup around the same time,” she said.

Lawton’s star has continued to rise after she was awarded the Emerging Athlete of the Year after her 2019 debut for the national side.

“Having more experienced athlete’s around me since I joined the program, was so helpful for me,” said the Australian star.

“I moved over to Perth as a fresh 18-yearold who had never lived out of home, having your friends - not only your team-mates around you who are so supportive is amazing.”

Hawks hammer it home

By Tyler Lewis As far as wins go, few are going to come easier to Hallam Kalora Park than Saturday afternoon’s demolition of Narre Warren.

It was over in the blink of an eye, as the Hawks decimated the Pies in just 24 overs of cricket.

Jordan Hammond sent the visitors in at the toss, and it paid dividends, as his side destroyed the Pies for just 19.

Yes, 19.

The Pies largest partnership for the day was just 10, as number three James Elliott top scored with eight.

Hammond revealed he is still pinching himself about what he and his side achieved, while also crushing any scepticism that the pitch was unplayable.

“Absolutely, I think it would be the lowest score in Turf 1 I would’ve thought, it doesn’t happen very often,” he said.

“When you get a chance like that, it’s pretty good.

“As a side I don’t think they’re really up to Turf 1, to be honest.

“The wicket we got – everyone will talk about the wicket – but some of the shots they played were pretty poor as well.

“It just felt like we were going to keep going through on the weekend, it was a different feeling all together,” Hammond said.

It’s been a tough couple of the weeks for the Hawks, who lost to Buckley Ridges and Narre South, forcing the Hawks to pray for other results, while continuing to win.

“With our ladder position we were going to bowl no matter what, whether the wicket was an absolute road or if it had a bit in it, that was more the reason on bowling (first), he said.

“I don’t think it would’ve mattered what the wicket was like, it was a little bit slow, but at Hallam it’s always a new ball wicket anyway.

“Last year we won all the close games, this year we haven’t.

“Even in our warm-up it was a bit more jovial and once we got on a roll, I don’t think anyone was stopping us, wouldn’t matter which side we were playing,” Hammond said.

Hammond himself was the star of the show, capturing 5/8 from his 10 overs.

“He always takes the wind which makes it harder (though), I have to push up hill so I thought ‘I am just going to bend my back and have a go today’, and it came out nicely,” Hammond said.

For Hallam Kalora Park to make finals, it will need to defeat North Dandenong and hope either Narre South loses to St. Mary’s, or Springvale South loses in dramatic fashion to Berwick.

While it is a tough scenario for the Hawks to come out of on top, Hammond says his side will just be focusing on what it can control, and that will come down to the toss again.

“We can’t control that (the ladder) so we just have to stay alive, win the game, that’s all we can do, he said.

“That is why if we win the toss this week we will bowl again”.

Narre South had very little trouble in pursuit of the target, bringing home the win before drinks, with seven wickets in hand.

Harsha De Silva was terrific for the Lions with an unbeaten half-century.

The situation is simple this week for the Lions as they face the Saints once again… win = in.

It has been a tough year for the Maroons – who sit in seventh with three wins – but Saturday was a performance that showed plenty of promise.

North Dandenong won the toss and predictably batted, as the tinge of grass at Park Oval threatened for the ground to be somehow quicker than usual.

The Maroons didn’t have it all their way, but it was two hands from Syed Mehmood and Austin Heldt (51) that helped them post a competitive score.

Mehmood strode to the crease at 1/15 and batted with utter class, finishing with 101 not out.

Travelling batters tend to be fooled by the short boundaries of Park, wanting to hit the fence each and every ball, but Mehmood batted with patience and knew the boundary ball would come.

His knock guided the Maroons to a very respectable score of 7/254 from 45 overs.

But unfortunately for Mehmood and his side, the Bucks are in just divine form.

Buckley Ridges never lost any wickets in clusters, with the lowest partnership still being 34 runs.

Each of the six batters used reached 20 or more, while Jayson Hobbs led the way with a match-winning knock of 75 not out.

Mahela Udawatte (48) was one of the six amongst the runs once again. His run of form has slid under the radar, but it is a crucial factor in why the Bucks are yet again premiership favourites.

In his 12 innings, Udawatte has fallen below 18 just twice and has a season total of 528 at 48.

The Bucks ultimately passed the Maroons in the 44th over with six wickets in hand.

While it is mathematically possible, the Bucks would need to lose to Narre Warren this week, and Berwick defeat Springvale South to give up top spot.

That Springvale South side did as it simply needed to do against St. Mary’s on Saturday at Alex Nelson Reserve.

The Bloods set the Saints 7/222 after Ryan Quirk’s first innings (56) half-century.

Excitingly for the Bloods, they could’ve really posted a much more convincing score, with six of the top seven reaching double-figures, but just Quirk going on with it.

Finals around the corner BERWICK BOWLS Berwick Bowls had plenty of ups and downs this week right across the board.

With 36 players unavailable for the weekend the club’s depth was really tested from the seconds’ right down to the eights.

Our sixths received a forfeit from Dandenong Club and thankfully, due to that happening, it allowed us to fill some vacant positions throughout the grades.

Side 1 - 83 def Keysborough 79 Travelling to Keysborough is always a tough task and their green didn’t help at all with varying pace and runs throughout on Saturday.

Thankfully for us, Keysborough also had to adjust as they also didn’t know what to expect form their own green either. With Berwick off to a good start it quickly became a nail-biter throughout the afternoon. The rink of John Horwood, Andrew Bunnell, Lawrie Edwards and John Rich got out to a great lead and continued that throughout the day. As expected, the final result came down to the last two or three ends. Ellard picked up two on his rink and Rich a couple also which saw the Wickers come away with a four-shot overall win.

Side 1 - 81 def Upwey-Tecoma 67 (Ladder position 1st) Sunday saw the second leg of a double header and a couple of tough away games. The ones got off to a great start with an early overall lead which took the pressure right off. Steve Ellard, David Bond, Ed Wilson and Paul O’Day were all over it and it saw them out to a big lead which eventually set the day up with a rink win of 29-11. McQueen was well down against some amazing bowls from the opposition skip early but fought back hard to have a chance to win the game on the last end but wasn’t to be.

Rich’s rink won a tight one by a shot and Mills rink was just down after some great bowls by the mullet throughout the game. With another double header next week the ones will need to consolidate a great weekend of wins by hosting Mordy on Saturday then travelling to Clayton on Sunday. Now in top spot, they have a red-hot chance of the home final in a couple of weeks but their fate is in their hands.

Side 2 - 54 def by Cranbourne 1 92 (4th) The twos were decimated this week with unavailability and Covid isolations. Cranbourne One got our twos on a day that our twos weren’t at full strength and it really has hurt the ladder position of the seconds. Sitting in top spot after a great win last weekend they’ve now dropped to fourth.

The section we’ve said all year is probably one of the most competitive in the clubs competitions for weekend pennant and sitting in fourth spot and only 10 points clear of Ferntree Gully in fifth, a big win against Vermont Sth this week with many returning back to the side is paramount. Who knows, with the twos

This way to the finals. Berwick Bowls Club is set for an exciting finish to the 2021/22 season. 267271 playing their last home and away round an 18 point win and the possibility of some upsets in other games, the twos just might see themselves back to the top two. Fingers crossed it’s a big win and the results go our way. Again, their fate is now in their hands.

Side 3 - 114 def Chelsea 1 51 (2nd) A huge win by the threes this week against Chelsea’s top side at home. Rink wins of 19 (K. Graeber), 10 (C. Fothergill), 8 (K. Dalman) and a massive score of 35-9 by Jim Weir, Lynn McCurran, Karyn Mackie and Craig ‘Cranky’ Mills saw the threes really consolidate their ladder position of second. Again though, this week could see some change in ladder positions.

The threes play Cranbourne 3 at Cranbourne.

It could be a tough game on their synthetic but we’ll back them in (just). The third side, Cranbourne RSL, host Narre Warren so we don’t see the top position changing but with a good win, the threes will secure their second spot and a home final the following week.

Side 4 - 82 drew with Mulgrave 3 82 (7th) Great to see the fours bounce back after last weeks’ game. They weren’t happy with our assessment of their effort and came out determined to give a better effort and they did. One rink win and two rink draws saw both teams come away with nine points for the day. The fours play their last game this weekend against South Oakleigh at home and who knows, the fours just might help shape the final four with

a win over second place in their last game.

Side 5 - 64 def by Mulgrave 4 77 (7th) The fives have been great the past few weeks and nearly knocked off the third placed Mulgrave on the weekend. Their wins have been few and far between but their past month has seen them get a couple of wins on the board and some very close games against good sides.

This week the fives travel to Keysborough to play their third side. They’ve got nothing to lose and could end Keysy’s hopes of sneaking in to the four with a win in their last game.

Great effort this week to all in the fives and let’s see you get yourselves up for the last game and create an upset at Keysborough. Hopefully, you’ll play on the back green and not the dodgy front green.

Side 6 received forfeit from Dandenong Club (1st) Well, the sixes are our first confirmed home final sitting on top of the ladder after receiving a forfeit over Dandenong Club. This week they head to Churchill Waverley Park which sees first play second. The sixes couldn’t ask for a better warm up to finals and after a week off they’ll be refreshed and keen to get on the green and secure top spot.

Side 7 - 51 def by Carrum 2 58 (1st) Although the sevens went down this week they still hold top spot and won’t have to play on what can be one of the toughest greens to play on near the beach at Carrum. Now 12

This week will be a good warm up to finals. A win will see them most likely host Carrum in week one of finals, but a loss could see them playing Cranbourne again in the first final at home.

Side 8 - 58 def Murrumbeena 3 50 (2nd) Another good win away by the eights this week.

They have also confirmed their home final on 12 March with a 25-point margin between them and third spot. Another great lead up to finals this week at home against Sandringham 3 and a win could see them pinch top spot and play Beaumaris 5 in the first final or Brighton Beach if they are to stay in second.

So, we’ve locked in three home finals already. The 1s, 2s and 3s this week have massive games in contrast of how finals might look for them and whether we have more teams playing at home in week one of the finals.

The 6s, 7s and 8s have great lead up games before finals the following week and it’s important that the 4s and 5s go out and enjoy themselves and maybe help shape the top-four in their sections.

Get on the greens…practice with purpose and cross our fingers results are in favour of the Wickers next week.

Another great week on the diamond for Casey Softball It was another great week of action at Casey Softball with regular competitions being played and three more Victorian Representatives being announce as well.

Congratulations to Chelsea Kimber, Tash Holt and Tamar Hutchinson on making the Womens U23 Victorian team.

Saturday’s action started with U13s Berwick Cherokee taking on the Cobras.

Both teams batted and fielded well, but the Cobras were too strong for Cherokee winning 16-7. Best for Cobras was Steele Hills and for Cherokee Isla Turcino.

The players, most of them playing their first season, are improving in leaps and bounds thanks to their wonderful coaches.

The first game in Social Women’s saw Cranbourne Comets come up against Berwick Geronimo. Geronimo started strong being 7-1 up after three innings. Shelley Ryder for Geronimo hit a home run and Merre-Lee Mackey had three safe hits.

Comets fought back but Geronimo held strong to win 11-4. Best for Comets was Amanda ‘Moo’ Clunes.

MVPs then played Penguins.

A home run and a triple to Sam Cankett, before not to be out done Jess George hit a grand slam home run. Penguins were even-

tually comfortable 13-2 winners.

The Social ‘game of the round’ was played between Cobras and Doveton Renegades.

Renegades had the edge early leading 5-3, before two double plays from Cobras kept

them in touch. A great running catch in left field by Emily Harrison saw her throw to Margie Steendam at third for the double.

Then Margie was again involved fielding the ball at third and throwing to Ava Harrison covering second, who threw to Hannah Smith at first for the second out. Keira Hoad pitched strong for Renegades, but Cobras came from behind and held on for a gutsy 7-5 win.

Open Women saw the two Berwick teams - Cheyenne and Comanche - face off.

A very even game had Cheyenne up 10-9 after three innings, but great batting from Comanche in the fourth saw them score 10-1 in the fourth innings to win 19-11.

Great batting came from Comanche’s Andrea ‘Guppy’ Gartside and Jasmine Hawker.

Best for Cheyenne at second base was Many McLean.

The day ended with a blowout n the Men’s game.

It was a great team effort from Cobras, especially Tristan Little and Heath Lewis, keeping Meteors scoreless with their strong pitching and the whole team batting strongly.

Best for Meteors was Aaron Amalfi.

The final score was Cobras 18 to Meteors 0.
