chemicals used in training when brigades were unaware of the dangers they posed.

Mr O’Loughlin was awarded a life membership in the CFA in 2017 and also received other awards for his service to the CFA. Mr Parlby said Mr O’Loughlin was a committed firefighter who showed the younger volunteers the way it should be done.

“He was a very quiet sort of person, he liked his space,” he said.

Jack O’Loughlin sadly passed away at the end of January.

“I would say 99.9 per cent of the time he was right when he argued about anything as far as CFA was concerned, “He would look into the problem first before he came out and said this is what needs to be done.”

A celebration of Jack’s life will be held on Wednesday 16 February, at 1pm, at Heritage and Heritage Funerals in Wantirna, with a wake being held next door at the Hill Club.

Anthony O’Loughlin, better known as Jack, passed away on Monday 31 January aged 72.

Mr O’Loughlin was a life-member of Boronia Fire brigade and CFA for over 53 years, having started with the brigade in March 1968. He held several positions with the brigade including as third lieutenant, secretary, junior leader and resident officer.

Neil Parlby said Mr O’Loughlin joined Boronia CFA at the same time as he did, and the CFA became like a family for Mr O’Loughlin.

“His parents passed away when he was probably in his 30s, maybe 40s,” he said.

“He had a brother who passed away who was with the CFA for a short while and another brother in Queensland, so that was all the family he had. The camaraderie of the fire brigade kept him going.”

Mr Parlby said Mr O’Loughlin returned to the CFA even after a successful throat cancer operation.

“Jack did a good stint as secretary and he was also what they called before we had permanent staff, a resident officer,” Mr Tarlby said.

“He was paid by the CFA to sleep on the station. It was a few stations around the state and he did that for a short time, it was around 18 months.”

On their Facebook page, Boronia CFA said while resident officer he lived on the station as one of the few people to have done so.

“Jack’s knowledge of the brigade, CFA and firefighting was exceptional and he always helped and passed on his knowledge to brigade members,” Boronia CFA said.

“Jack will be missed by everyone at the Brigade and we pass our condolences to Jack’s family and friends.”

Neighbours oppose aged-care facility

Stolen Caravan Olinda Police station is seeking any information regarding the theft of a caravan on Observatory Rd, Mount Dandenong between 6 and 8 February 2022.

Police said the caravan is a white and black 2020 Coronet-LE162 caravan, with the registration Z97574.

Anyone with information is asked to contact LSC LONG at Olinda Police Station on 9751 1241 or make an anonymous report via CrimeStoppers.

Ferntree Gully arrest

By Parker McKenzie An Upper House MP has tabled a community group’s petition in parliament to stop the development of a retirement village in Ferntree Gully.

Glengollan Village, a not-for-profit aged care provider established in Ferntree Gully in 1956, proposed to build a two-story aged care facility at 2-8 Saint Elmo Street that could house 108 aged-care residents.

A group of residents who live on the street opposed the development because of several complaints.

Saint Elmo Street resident Andre Cooke told the Star Mail on 23 November the development would damage privacy.

“The issue is the overpowering size of the building,” Mr Cooke said.

“I mean you can imagine if you want to go outside with some friends and have a bit of a barbecue, we shouldn’t have to put up with it.”

Catherine Higgins, another resident, said that the site had significant natural value.

“I don’t want to see all the vegetation go,” Mrs Higgins said.

“There’s a lot of wildlife that will be affected.”

Transport Matters Party Mr Barton tabled the petition for the sitting week of State Parliament starting on the 9 February.

“I was pleased to see the community rally together and get this petition signed,” Mr Barton said.

“This yet another way we can express our disappointment in this development proposal.”

Transport Matters MP Rod Barton met with residents of Saint Elmo Street opposing the development in November 2021.

Picture: PARKER MCKENZIE Knox City Council rejected the proposal from Glengollan village on 24 May after extensive advocacy work from the community, which resulted in 463 objections from 385 objectors.

Glengollan Village appealed the decision with the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) with a hearing set for April 2022.

Mr Barton said he sympathises with the community, who he believes are doing a great job fighting the development.

“Now the petition is tabled, I am pursuing a meeting with Minister Wynne and members of the community affected to further these conversations,” “My understanding is that this case is going to VCAT and the government will allow that process to happen.”

The group of residents opposing the development have recently completed mediation with Glengollan Village and are looking to raise funds for a solicitor.

A Ferntree Gully man is one of three people charged following an alleged assault at a Reservoir address.

The charges follow an alleged incident where a male in his 20s was assaulted at an address on Maclagan Crescent on 6 February.

The man suffered upper-body injuries but was able to escape from the property.

Police carried out searches on Friday morning at six residential addresses including one in Attwood.

The 30-year-old Attwood man was charged with intentionally causing serious injury, recklessly causing serious injury, assault, extortion, and assault with a weapon.

A 41-year-old Reservoir man and a 24-yearold Attwood man have also been charged. All three will face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday afternoon for a remand application.

Police seized a number of items at each address, including a range of weapons.

The trio of alleged offenders are believed to be involved with the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.

Speed checks for motorcyclists On Saturday the 12 February, Cardinia Highway Patrol conducted speed enforcement duties on Beaconsfield-Emerald Road.

Two motorcycles were observed southbound at over 120km/h in a 70km/h zone. The pair were intercepted and a 52-year-old man from Hampton Park and a 47-year-old man from Frankston were pulled over.

Both bikes were impounded at a cost of $895 each and both men will face the magistrates.

Car crashes through front of Monbulk butcher store

By Parker McKenzie A local butcher in Monbulk was rocked when a car crashed through the front window, shattering glass across the shop and becoming lodged in the frame.

Passers-by witnessed a car crash into the front window of the Monbulk Family Butcher on 7 February, which fortunately resulted in nobody being injured.

The car ended up lodged in the front of the butcher shop, with the driver walking away without being hurt in the crash.

Monbulk Family Butcher thanked everyone who stopped to help after the incident on Facebook and said it “was a miracle no one was injured.”

“Just want everyone to know that thankfully no one was injured today when a car came through the shop window,” they said.

“Some of us a bit shaken as there was a very close call with one of our staff working just inside the window.”

CFA and Police responded to the incident, while the driver of the vehicle was driven home by the owner of the shop’s daughter.

The shop reopened on 9 February.

Feeding vital meals service

By Mikayla van Loon The Philanthropic Collective, has just received its first formal donation from the Dandenong Ranges Bendigo Bank to help volunteers keep feeding families in need.

Although the bank has supported the Olinda charity through its annual fundraiser Halloween on the Green for five years, the Free Food Program will now receive quarterly donations from the community bank, the first one being made in January.

The Collective’s treasurer Fabian FillipGautier said funding like the $2500 is essential to the running of the charity.

“Even though we’re not paying rent here, we’re not spending any money on wages or infrastructure because it’s been provided, we have fridges and it’s going to cover electricity for a few months. So for us, it’s pretty essential,” he said.

“We do need financial support and it’s very hard to access financial support for smaller charities. It’s time consuming, and we all volunteer, so we all donate our time to every aspect of the charity. So having that support from the bank is just absolutely a game changer for us.”

Dandenong Ranges Community Bank Group senior business development manager Mick Spruhan said that is the role of a community bank, to support local organisations.

“It’s part of being part of the community.

The community bank branches try to be very much involved in the community wherever they can possibly be,” he said.

The charity will receive another $2500 in April and Mr Spruhan said that way the volunteers and the bank know exactly when the money will come in.

The Free Food Program started just over six years ago and Mr Fillip-Gautier said the growth in the need for food has been so great they have had to purchase new equipment and commercial sized fridges.

“We started with a free food program in one school and then it spread and then it spread out of the schools to families that were struggling,” he said.

Now the charity feeds up to 500 people a week, across 120 families in the Dandenong Ranges and even so far down to Ringwood.

The food is all donated from supermarkets, bakeries and other businesses to put together food boxes of both fresh and non-perishable food for families, the eldery and the sick.

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, Mr FillipGautier said many elderly people in the local community were seeking social connection as much as they were needing food, so the Free

Food Program helped deliver both of those things.

“We approached them and we made contact because they were not looking for help, they were just surviving and we managed to create these bridges within our community as well,” he said.

“It’s getting nourished in your belly but also in your spirit and feeling that you belong. For a lot of people the help makes them feel cared for.”

Local MPs’ yes vote

By Parker McKenzie Three local members of Parliament voted to pass the Religious Discrimination Bill through the lower house, although the bill was shelved by the Federal Government before it could be debated in the Senate.

Federal parliament debated the Religious Discrimination Bill until past 4am on Thursday 10 February, which resulted in the bill being passed by the lower house with amendments to other legislation to protect transgender and queer students.

The bill prohibits discrimination on the basis of a person’s religious belief or activity in relation to employment, education and services.

Independents, the Labor Party and five Liberal MPs successfully passed an amendment to the Human Rights Legislation Amendment Bill 2021 to extend protections against discrimination to include gender identity, not just sexuality.

The amendment – which was identical to the amendment proposed by Labor - was moved by Centre Alliance MP Rebekha Sharkie and passed by 65 to 59 votes in the Lower House.

Despite several Liberal MPs crossing the floor and voting with the Labor opposition to pass the amendment, three local Liberal MPs –Jason Wood from La Trobe, Tony Smith from

Casey, and Alan Tudge from Aston – voted against it.

Mr Wood said the bills aim is to prevent discrimination.

“The Prime Minister had an excellent speech on the bill that is very much about protecting kids. No one wants to see them discriminated against because they’re gay or transgender and safeguards put in the bill ensured that wouldn’t happen,” Mr Wood said.

“There were people from the wider community who were concerned about that, including from my electorate, so we had some members cross the floor.”

A controversial element of the bill – which was narrowly passed in the House of Representatives and was set to be subject to amendments in the Senate - is a clause which protects religious statements of faith from constituting discrimination.

Co-convener of the Victorian Pride Lobby Nevna Spirovska said the religious discrimination bill remains deeply flawed despite the amendments.

“It hands a positive right to people of faith to discriminate against others and overrides all state and territory discrimination laws,” she said. “LGBTIQA+ people should not face discrimination because of who they are.”

All three MPs were contacted for comment on the outcome of the bill passing the House of Representatives.

Mr Wood said the bill ensures Australia’s wide variety of faiths - including Christians, Muslims and Hindus - are protected.

“It’s not in any way targeting young people,” he said.

“The reforms in place regarding the transgendered in particular, one of the amendments was to go to the Law Reform Commission to look at it from a legal perspective, to make sure there are safeguards in place for those students and young people. That was going to report back to parliament in six months.”

The Senate resolved against debating the religious discrimination bill on 10 February.

With only two sitting days of parliament left, it looks unlikely to pass into law before the federal election, which will take place on or before 21 May. Ms Spiravska said the Victorian Pride Lobby opposes any attempt to weaken Victoria’s Equal Opportunity Act and the Federal Government should instead deliver laws which protect people equally.

“The Victorian Pride Lobby welcomes amendments to the bill passed overnight which ensure better protections for for LGBTIQA+ students and religious schools,” she said.

“However, the proposed law would still override hard-fought Victorian protections for LGBTIQA+ teachers and staff at religious schools.

The Dandenong Ranges’ Tesselaar Tulip Festival took out a gold award for major festivals and events at the Victorian Tourism Awards 2022.

The 30-day event features almost a million tulips on display, live entertainment, performances, tractor rides, market stalls, international food, a treasure hunt, souvenirs and games.

Now in its 60th year, the festival celebrates the tulip, Dutch history and flower farming. It also employs around 90 staff and is held annually in Spring in Silvan.

The Victorian Tourism Awards are hosted annually by the Victorian Tourism Industry Council to honour business excellence throughout the tourism industry.

VTIC Chief Executive Felicia Mariani said the council is proud to deliver an important event for the tourism industry and highlight operators like the Tulip Festival.

“This year’s celebration feels especially meaningful. We not only look to reward operators for their business excellence, but we want to recognise and celebrate the innovation, resilience, and commitment they have exhibited to weather the storm of the past two years,” she said.

“We congratulate all our Gold, Silver and Bronze category winners, along with all this year’s finalists.”

There were 119 submissions across 32 categories in 2022. As a gold winner, the Dandenong Ranges’ Tesselaar Tulip Festival will represent Victoria at the national awards on the Sunshine Coast in March.

Ms Mariani said 2021 has been the toughest of years for tourism operators throughout Victoria.

“Operators in Victoria have encountered more obstacles in their businesses than any other state in the country, having to press pause and restart to accommodate six lockdowns and more than 260 days under restrictions during the pandemic,” she said.

“But in testament to the pure grit and determination of Victorians, our industry rose to the challenge and relished the opportunity to win Gold in Victoria, earning the right to compete with their counterparts on the national stage at the 2021 Australian Tourism Awards.”

The next Festival will be held from 10 September until 9 October, 2022 at Tesselaar Flower Farm, 357 Monbulk Road, Silvan.

The Yarra Ranges Heritage Network is launching a new exhibition to celebrate the anniversary of 150 years of local government in the Yarra Ranges area.

The Power and the People exhibition celebrates the work of these councils and their communities over the years.

On 11 February 1872, the proclamation of the Shire of Lillydale ushered in one of the first forms of local government in the area.

The Shire of Yarra Ranges was formed in 1994 by the merger of parts of Shire of Sherbrooke, Shire of Healesville, Shire of Upper Yarra, and Shire of Lillydale.

In 2022, 18 members of the Yarra Ranges Heritage Network collaborated to create the exhibition, which aims to showcase the importance of local government and their partner-

Rotary Club Monbulk will be hosting a storm recovery festival on Sunday February 27, where funding for several projects will be announced.

President of Rotary Club of Monbulk and District Helen Riethof said the festival was to show people in the mountains Rotary cares.

“People in the mountain I think have felt forgotten. We know some of them are still so badly impacted by the storm, with some still not in their homes,” Ms Riethof said.

“We just want them to know that people far and wide really do care.”

The festival will take place at St George’s Anglican Church Paddock, Main Street Monbulk from 10am until 2pm.

Ms Riethof said Rotary clubs from around Victoria are involved in providing support for projects aiming to assist people in the Dandenong Ranges.

“Rotary has raised about $120,000 from Rotarians all around Melbourne and the regions, and individual Rotarians and others as well.” she said.

“We’re currently working on applications to that grant. We’ve got three I think are going to be presented to the relevant parties at the festival.”

Ms Riethof said the criteria for the grants are to spend the money in a way that will benefit the community in the long term.

“We have a children’s book that was written and compiled in the Olinda and Kalorama area with schools involved, featuring illustrations by children who recorded their thoughts about the storm,” Ms Riethof said.

“The launch for those projects that have been approved and maybe still to be approved will be at the festival.”

The children’s book is titled The Story of the Big Storm and will officially launch at the festival. Another project to be potentially funded is for essential equipment for SES units in the Dandenong Ranges.

The festival will also have amusements, food, live music and displays, with a gold coin entry donated to CFA and SES.

Voices of Casey speak up

By Parker McKenzie Voices of Casey held a community forum with talks from environmentalist, public scientist and 2007 Australian of the Year Tim Flannery and former Indi MP Cathy McGowan as they continue their search for a candidate to run for the seat of Casey in the next federal election.

Voices for Casey spokesperson Fionn Bowd once again led the forum attended by over 80 people, with the theme of whether individuals can have an impact on larger issues like climate change.

Fionn Dowd said Ms McGowan and Mr Flannery had optimism and hope for the future, but it isn’t a passive kind of hope.

“It’s not the kind of hope that you hear some people express along the lines that surely things will get better, surely politicians will start to listen, surely women will start to have more equality, surely we’ll start to get some action on climate change,” she said.

“There is the kind that asks you to take action, asks you to ask yourself what more you can do and what can be done together.”

Mr Flannery said he had hope for climate action after witnessing the speed of Australia’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We stopped flights from China within weeks of the news breaking and we actually beat the WHO to declare a global pandemic by 12 days,” Mr Flannery said.

“We were being very proactive and I just thought if this government can do this for a global crisis, we can do it for climate and it turns out that there are so many lessons from dealing with the pandemic that are directly applicable to climate, “As we got closer to COP26 in Glasgow, and I attended that meeting so I can talk a little bit about it, where Australia just performed so dismally it was if we’d learned nothing from the pandemic.”

Ms McGowan said if you have a vision you can bring people together.

“We’ve forgotten the power of groups coming together, finding a shared vision, having discussed what the values are, and the behaviour that we’re going to work to doing that very obviously, and then setting about doing something in a really deliberate way,” she said.

“We got all the diverse people together.

We had a strategy, we had a vision, we had a strategy, we had an action plan, we had a time frame and then we got ahead and did it, and it worked.”

Ferntree Gully man’s winning ticket

By Parker McKenzie A Ferntree Gully man has scored over $1 million dollars in Tattslotto a huge win, having bought the winning ticket at Upper Ferntree Gully Newsagency.

The division one winner, who was one of five winning entries on Saturday 5 February, didn’t believe he had won $1,158,104.

“This isn’t one of my mates pulling a prank, is it? Are you sure this is real? This better not be a joke or a scam, I’ve been dodging these calls lately,” he said.

“I was fast asleep when you called me and I had to drag myself out of bed to answer the phone. I’m wide awake now after hearing this amazing news.”

His winning ticket was purchased at Upper Ferntree Gully Newsagency, located at Ferntree Plaza on Burwood Highway.

Upper Ferntree Gully Newsagency owner Manthan Patel, who owns the agency with his wife Priti, said it was exciting to see such a big win.

“This was the first big win since we took over three years ago,” he said.

“We got a call from Tattsloto that somebody had won, we never knew who it was.”

Four Victorians were among the winners of the draw.

Mr Patel said he wishes the winner good luck and he’s glad he bought the ticket in his newsagency.

“It’s created a lot of buzz around the town, lots of people are talking about it,” he said.

“It’s so nice that we sold the winning ticket.”

The winning numbers were 22, 9, 10, 11, 2 and 37, while the supplementary numbers were 6 and 40.

Set to go Live on the Lawn

By Parker McKenzie and Callum Ludwig Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey has announced that their annual music festival Live on the Lawn will be free for the 2022 edition, due to a one-off grant from the Federal Government’s Live Music Australia program.

Creative Director Gareth Hart said it is an event that we know will reconnect, strengthen and delight our local community.

“On the back of the year we have all had, we need to come back together as a community. We all deserve a chance to celebrate, to dance, to connect with friends new and old,” they said.

“Thanks to the Federal Government’s ‘Live Music Australia’ initiative, we are thrilled to be able to offer this event free of charge to our community. It is Burrinja’s pleasure to offer this festival to the community, without the financial barrier of ticketing that some people may experience.”

The program is a competitive grants opportunity for small to medium-sized venues supporting original Australian live music.

Gareth Hart said the music and creative industries continue to climb an uphill battle it attempts to recover from the devastating effects of the last two years.

“We are not yet recovered, but moments like Live on the Lawn will help us remember what we are aiming for.” they said.

“In 2021, we programmed an exclusively local line up, and in 2022 we have programmed a line up of female and femme artists from the greater Melbourne/Naarm region.”

New music festival will Rock the Valley

By Callum Ludwig Rock The Valley, a new blues, rock, psych, soul, and roots music festival, is holding its very first edition next month in Yarra Glen hosted by music label Jamalama Music.

Ash King, who founded Jamalama Music with his wife Ashlee King (yes, they share the same name!) said it will hopefully provide an opportunity for artists and the community to reconnect and be brought back together.

“It feels as though we’ve been starved of the opportunity to engage with live audiences,” he said.

“As a performer it is one thing to create the art and it’s another thing to be able to share it.”

Ash King has spent his life living in and around the Yarra Ranges, having grown up and gone to school in Healesville and also having lived in Ferntree Gully and Mount Evelyn before moving back to Healesville.

The importance of local music is not lost on King, having met his wife at a small community gig in Mooroolbark.

“We found out the council we’re running gigs so we went to Mooroolbark Community Centre who at the time had a thing on Friday nights called Lounge Lizards,” he said.

“A friend of mine in the band brought a whole heap of his friends from Mooroolbark along and my would-be wife was one of them.”

The roster of artists is headlined by Gold Coast native, Melbourne-formed band The Delta Riggs, and other acts including Kings’s very own band Smoke Stack Rhino, Whoopie Cat, The Ugly Kings, Steph Strings, and Sunfruits among many more.

King said the roster of varying genres will complement each other well.

“We’ve chosen acts who are different in their musical style, but the energy and the feel come back to everyone dancing and having good times,” he said.

Dan Swoo from Whoopie Cat, a fivepiece heavy blues band who grew up in the Yarra Ranges and started out performing in Mooroolbark and Healesville, said it’s very exciting to have the opportunity to perform live again.

“As far as a musician goes, it’s pretty much the peak,” he said “I love having music recorded, but it’s live shows that mean everything.”

Swoo said festival-goers can look forward to hearing the band’s upcoming album as part of their performance in the festival.

“Our second album and the third release from us should be out hopefully in the next couple of months. We’re just in the mixing and mastering stage at the moment,” he said “A lot of the new stuff will be on the setlist.

There’ll be a lot of new music as well as all the old music.”

All ticket sales will count towards a donation to numerous children’s charities through the website Humanitix, and attendees have the option of an additional donation to Support Act, a charitable organisation delivering crisis relief services to artists, artist managers, crew, and music workers in hardship, particularly due to Covid-19.

School sets right tone A local music school has experienced a rise in enrollments, doubling their students since the beginning of the pandemic.

Mae Collard said she started her music school in her lounge room and was surprised by the amount of adults, kids and teenagers signing up for instrumental lessons.

“We’ve all experienced the downside of the pandemic, but this has been an exciting upside,” Ms Collard said “Seeing children discover the joy of music and then wanting to pursue that with lessons, has been wonderful.”

The Mae Collard School of Music in Ferntree Gully runs music programs at primary and secondary schools, as well as a school of its own which expanded to include a fourth room in January.

Andrew Feagan signed his daughter Scarlett up to the music school last year and said she came home from her first lesson beyond excited.

“She insisted she get a keyboard as she wanted to practice every day. We’ve had lots of mini concerts since then,” Mr Feagan said.

“I love hearing her music through the house and it’s made Scarlett so happy.”

The music school is located at 15 Alpine Street, Ferntree Gully.

Ms Collard said most of the students loved having a weekly escape from technology like TVs and Ipads.

“With the ups and downs of lockdowns, playing an instrument and singing was something they could continue to work on from home, regardless of what was happening around them, and we were really proud as teachers to be able to provide this,” Ms Collard said.

“Hopefully we’ve seen the last of lockdown and we can watch these talented music students progress in real life and on the stage, surrounded by other likeminded people.” mailcommunity.com.au

Eco warriors are wanted Community members with an interest in the natural environment are encouraged to sign a 10 week Nature Stewards program supported

by Council.

The program introduces people to local and wider Victorian ecosystems and topics, to build knowledge and inspire a love of the environment, and find out ways to help nature at home and through local environmental volunteering.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Jim Child said Nature Stewards would be a great opportunity for adults to learn more about the world around them.

“The Yarra Ranges is home to some of the most vibrant, rare and awe-inspiring natural environments in the state of Victoria,” Mayor Child said.

“Young people and students learn so much about the natural environment in their school lives, but we don’t get many chances to dive into topics like this once we’ve left school behind.”

The program will run from 19 March to 4 June, 2022, with Saturday classes running from 9.30am-12.30pm (excluding Easter and ANZAC Day weekends), with field sessions to follow after some sessions from 1pm-4.30pm.

Some of the topics included in the program are rocks and soils, fungi, plants and animals, climate change and the seasons, ways to care for Country and managing private property, being a citizen scientist, conservation volunteer, advocate for nature or a nature guide and how and where you can get outdoors and volunteer in your area.

“The Nature Stewards program is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the unique parts of our natural environment, how it all works and why so much work is being done – by Council, by the State Government and countless local groups – to protect and enhance it,” Mayor Child said.

Yarra Ranges Council are launching a Nature Stewards program, which will take place at Birdsland reserve among other places.

“I encourage anyone in the region keen on learning more to have a look and sign up for this program.”

The sessions will be held in multiple locations across Yarra Ranges, including Healesville, Lillydale Lake, Karwarra Gardens, Kalorama and Birdsland Reserve, Belgrave Heights Nature Stewards is facilitated by Outdoors Victoria and costs $175 for full-fee participants living in Yarra Ranges, $45 for concession holders. Funded placements are available, subsidised by Council, on application. Those outside the Yarra Ranges are also welcome to apply, with $350 for full free and $90 concession.

The program is open to people over the age of 18.

All sessions will be held in accordance with State Government directions and Covid-Safe rules. Double vaccination is required for adult education, so all participants and staff must be vaccinated.

Launch into music career Aspiring musicians in Emerald, Gembrook and Cockatoo can apply for the Cardinia Shire Music Residencies program, which has returned for 2022.

The program focuses on supporting emerging creative, allowing them to develop the skills to connect with their community and giving them the experience needed to master their craft.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Jeff Springfield said he is pleased council could deliver this exciting program again in 2022.

“We have facilitated this residency for the past three years and it has been a huge success,” Cr Springfield said.

Three local emerging musicians will be given vital industry knowledge and experience to help launch their careers.

The mentorships will take place from 21 February until 6 March with two performances included, one with the shire and another at a venue in inner-city Melbourne.

Knox council calls for views on draft retail revamp plan Knox City Council is holding online feedback sessions for residents to have their say on its plans to energise local retail.

“Join us at our online feedback sessions to share your thoughts on our draft Retail Activation Strategy,” council said.

“We are hosting sessions for residents on 17 February, and businesses on 22 February.”

Residents will have the opportunity to share their thoughts on range of initiatives including developing community spaces in areas like Knoxfield alley, turning Knox into “the picnic capital of the world” and a calendar of events for individual villages in the shire.

Yarra Glen & District Living & Learning Centre History Group Many people are familiar with the story of Tom Kruse, the Birdsville mailman. But did you know there is a local link to this story of the intrepid men of the outback and the battered old Leyland Badger Tom drove relentlessly over the sand dunes?

Before Tom took over the business in 1948, Harry Ding had operated the mail contract between Marree and Birdsville from 1936. Tom, aged 21, was one of his drivers.

During the late 1930s, Harry began looking for a truck that could tackle the sand dunes often up to 50 feet high. Lois Litchfield explains in her book ‘Maree and the Tracks Beyond in Black and White’, Harry eventually “...located three 1924 model XB Thornycroft timber trucks near Healesville. They had five-speed gearboxes, a two-speed auxiliary box behind, and drove through two heavy bogie rear axle assemblies with worm drive.

These units, according to Harry Ding, had driving parts, and a rear suspension that has no equal, even now, though it was near impossible to fit reliable brakes to the four-wheel drives.

In the Birdsville track country, they did not need brakes, and the ones on the front of the Leylands and Diamond T diesels were good enough.

It was quite a job getting the parts he needed from Healesville to the Ding garage at Yunta, South Australia and then adapting these parts to the smaller trucks, but once in they had no further trouble. The tires were about four feet high, giving them good clearance and the lower gearing would allow one wheel revolution per minute.”

The truck was abandoned on Pandie Pandie station in 1957 but relocated in 1986. It was restored in the 1990s and is now in the Birdwood Motor Museum northeast of Adelaide.

Though there were a number of trucks used on the run the Leyland Badger was Kruse’s favourite and he considered it the best truck available at the time for the difficult journey.

POD means copies of a book are only printed when an order is made, allowing prints of single or small quantities. This eliminates the costs in producing, warehousing and transporting large numbers of books.

To self-publish with IngramSpark, you need an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) from Thorpe-Bowker. The 13-digit number contains essential information used in sales tracking, retail inventory systems, library catalogs, online bookstores, etc.

Each specific format of your book requires a unique ISBN, including print (hardback or softbound) and electronic (ePUB, PDF or MOBI). For books translated from another

Death on the Nile is a compelling, sumptuous adaptation of Agatha Christie’s iconic novel.

Famous detective Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh) must solve a murder on an Egyptian cruise.

The plot takes a while to get going, but the slow pacing is richly-textured and deeply absorbing. The film thoroughly establishes its characters and develops their grudges against the victim, providing fertile ground for Poirot’s deduction and our suspicions once the murder occurs. The plot features subtle clues and some clever misdirects, and adds a personal dimension to the mystery, which was largely absent in Murder on the Orient Express, Branagh’s 2017 first Poirot film.

Branagh is still fun as Poirot, playing him as a strange but kind man with sharp instincts. Something of a soft reboot of Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile offers a more nuanced insight into Poirot’s personality. The World War I opening establishes the trauma and loss in Poirot’s past, which explains his obsessive, reserved nature, but Poirot slowly opens himself to personal connection again through his friendship with Bouc (Tom Bateman) and his endearingly awkward chemistry with jazz singer Salome (Sophie Okonedo).

The cinematography is stunning, and the first act in particular has an opulent, sexy aura. The cast is uniformly excellent, and the stand-out actor is Emma Mackey, who delivers a steely, layered performance as Jacqueline, a bitter former friend of the victim.

The only notable issues are Poirot’s lost love feeling somewhat underdeveloped alongside his battlefield trauma, and since most of the suspects have a relatively small share of screen-time, when a second murder occurs it’s not immediately clear who the victim is.

Death on the Nile is a dazzling character-driven mystery led by a talented star and director, and is playing in most Victorian cinemas.

Desert, Daniel and Dakar

By Callum Ludwig Seven days into the 2022 Dakar Rally, Three Bridges born and bred Daniel Sanders was sitting in third position out of the 144 riders who made it to the starting line. Steering his motorbike through the cold and dark Saudi Arabian morning, he didn’t notice the lane changing into U-turn.

“I put pressure on the front brake and I ended up crashing straightaway, slid into the curb at about 110 to 120 kilometres-an-hour, did three somersaults and then stopped, sitting there winded,” Sanders says.

“It was a big curb, probably a good foot high, not like our little curbs here in Australia.”

The result was a fractured elbow and what felt like a damaged femur as well. His motorbike was unrideable and he had crashed out of the 7000 kilometre, 12 day all-terrain endurance race.

The accident hasn’t deterred him, with a decades-long interest in motorbikes hardening him to the dangers riding presents. Motorbiking riding is in Daniel Sanders blood, with his Dad being an enduro off-road rider himself.

“I got my first bike when I was eight and didn’t start competing until I was 13.” Sanders says.

In 2011 he began racing competitively in America, before representing Australia from 2014 until 2019 as a member of the off-road enduro team. With the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 cancelling most off-road events, he was offered a position as the new junior rider on the KTM racing team and decided to switch into rally racing.

Sanders impressed during his debut Dakar Rally in 2021, winning the number one rookie and finishing in fourth place overall. In the second attempt in 2022, the race didn’t go quite as well.

“Once I started bending my left elbow, I

“When I pushed on the tip of my elbow, it wasn’t quite solid.”

After one unsuccessful surgery in Saudi Arabia, Sanders had another operation in Brisbane after flying home. He was told to spend six weeks recovering from the fractured elbow and a bone block put in after multiple shoulder dislocations.

“It was a little bit of a disappointment, but

I’m alive and I’m happy to be alive,” he says.

“In good news, I was competitive and fighting for the top spot. It’s better than crashing out in 10th place.”

In 2022, 20 riders didn’t finish the race, including Sanders. Despite this year’s setback, Sanders has his sights set on a swift recovery and going further than day seven at the grueling Dakar Rally in 2023, which has taken 76 lives throughout its history.

“I spent seven to eight months overseas training for this event. Then was knocked

down on day seven after being third overall in the competition, and I had a good chance of winning it as well,” Sanders says.

“For me, it’s just going to be the preparation again, same things I did last year; getting fit and healthy going in and really good training. I know what to train for now.”

Provided his recovery goes as planned, Sanders says he should be back riding in midApril, with his sights set on competing in the Finke Desert Race in Alice Springs on Queen’s Birthday weekend.

He is now ambitiously looking for a first title at the 2023 Dakar Rally.

“The plan is obviously to try and win. That’s the goal in my career right now, to win the Dakar Rally,” Sanders says.

“I’ll be doing everything I can this year to make sure my elbows good and my shoulder is good, and have a really good preparation going in.”

As part of the GasGas racing team, which was bought by KTM in 2019, Sanders will compete alongside the eventual winner of the 2022 Dakar Rally Sam Sunderland.

Sanders says he is proud of his teammate and what it meant for the GasGas brand.

“It gives GasGas a really good name and in the competitive side of things, it’s really cool for the brand to go global in such a prestigious event,” he says.

“Sammy is stoked, he’s worked hard, he’s probably got one more year of racing so to win late in your career is really cool.”

For now, Daniel Sanders is recuperating at home in the Yarra Valley, biding his time before he can get on the bike again while appreciating the love from his friends, family, and fans back home.

“It’s good to be back home and around the Yarra Valley. It’s good to see all the friendly faces again, and the support has been really good.”

Cafe is a sweet treat Emerald’s popular Laughing Fox Cafe expanded with the acquisition of neighbouring ice cream shop, The Sweet Station.

The addition of gourmet ice cream to the Laughing Fox menu happened in 2019 and is a major improvement, ushered in by owners Ali and Nazanin.

Expanding the menu to have around 70 meals, including 25 vegan/vegetarian and more than 60 gluten free options, was the next step of the planned expansion.

The addition of decorative acoustic panels added even more cosiness and charm to the venue.

In a further step, the cafe decided to start baking all their sweets in-house, which was formerly limited to scones and muffins.

From fresh and almond croissants to gluten free sweet slices, you will be able to find some delicious treats that have been freshly made.

The variety of drinks are also exceptional in the town; you can find more than 50 soft drink flavours, endless combinations of milkshakes and thick shakes thanks to huge range of ice cream varieties and topping flavours, freshly squeezed apple and orange juice, and a huge range of hot drinks that can satisfy your taste buds, no matter what you are craving.

The current situation of empty supermarket shelves, late deliveries and shortness of staff has significantly impacted the hospitality sector, and we are not an exception.

With the prices of ingredients and consumables (including coffee cups) going up once a while, and people’s preference to stay home more than before, you can see the prices have gone up in many of cafes and restaurants.

Despite all the pressure, we have kept our prices unchanged and don’t have any plan to increase them soon.

Monbulk midweek misfire On Tuesday Monbulk 1 headed to Donvale expecting a tough contest to hang on to top place on the ladder and that is exactly what transpired.

Eric Markham’s rink started well picking up four shots, but then dropped six on the next end. They were three shots down after six ends, but then won the next 10 ends to lead by nine shots. The Donvale rink then mounted a challenge, but the Monbulk rink was able to hang on and won by one shot, 18 to 17.

Peter Koomen’s rink found it hard to get into the game with the Donvale skip Gerard Blum bowling well and were nine shots down after eleven ends. They were unable to win an end after this and even though they limited the losses to one’s and two’s they went down by 22 shots, six to 28. Jim Bras’ rink started brilliantly and led by eight shots after four ends. By the tenth end they led by 13 shots and were never really challenged winning by six shots, 25 to 19.

Monbulk lost the overall by 15 shots, 49 to 64, but other results have enabled them to hold on to top place on the ladder.

Monbulk 2 played Ferntree Gully at home in what turned out to be a close encounter.

Eric Furby’s rink was level after eight ends, but then lost four of the next five ends to fall behind by six shots. The Monbulk rink made these shots up in the next two ends to draw level and going into the last end held a one shot lead. They lost the last end by one shot and the game ended in a tie, 18 shots all.

Graeme Goller’s rink trailed by five shots after six ends, but then picked up eight shots in four ends to lead by three shots. The lead then seesawed with the Monbulk rink leading by four shots with three ends to play. However, they lost all three ends to lose by two shots, 18 to 20.

Alan Hamilton’s rink found themselves 11 shots behind after eleven ends due to losing a number of multiples. They made a challenge

in the back half of the game winning the majority of ends, but dropped more clangers to lose by seven shots, 17 to 24.

Monbulk 2 lost the overall by 9 shots, 53 to 60.

Monbulk 3 played at Yarra Junction and found the home team strong across all rinks.

Mike Harris’ rink started well and led by

three shots after two ends, but then dropped some multiples to fall behind by 16 shots after 13 ends. They battled hard and won the last three ends to lose by 18 shots, 13 to 31.

Alan Brooke’s rink were five shots in front after eight ends, but then lost the next six ends to trail by seven shots. By the nineteenth end they levelled the scores, but faded to lose

by seven shots, 16 to 23.

Bruce Cockerill’s rink led by one shot after nine ends, but then lost the next six ends to trail by 11 shots. Even though the Monbulk rink won the majority of ends they weren’t able to bridge the gap losing 13 shots to 24.

Monbulk 3 lost the overall by 36 shots, 42 to 78.

Tough round for bowlers On Saturday Monbulk 1 travelled to unfamiliar territory in Cranbourne and were no match for the home team.

Tim Stapleton’s rink found it difficult to score early and trailed by 11 shots after nine ends.

They were able to win the majority of ends in the back half of the game, but dropped a couple of multiples to lose by 15 shots, nine to 24.

Eric Markham’s rink started well and were five shots in front after two ends. They then dropped five shots on the next end and after six ends scores were tied. However, they could not stay with their opponents and lost by 14 shots, 13 to 27.

Jim Bras’ rink were only one shot down after seven ends, but lost five of the next six ends to be ten shots down. They more than matched their opponents in the last eight ends, but went down by seven shots, 15 to 22.

Brian Smith’s rink was three shots in front after three ends, but were then overwhelmed to lose by 20 shots, 17 to 37. Monbulk lost the overall by 56 shots, 54 to 110.

Monbulk 2 played at home against Packenham in a game they were expected to win to maintain their second position on the ladder, but things did not go according to plan.

Eric Furby’s rink picked up five shots on the third end to propel them into the game and by the fourteenth end were eight shots in front.

However, their opponents picked up seven shots in four ends to move within a shot. The Monbulk rink were able to hang on in the last three ends to win by the barest margin, 20 to 19.

Graeme Goller’s rink had a close tussle throughout their game with only a few shots separating the teams for the most part of the match. Goller’s rink won four ends in a row to lead by the greatest margin between the teams of three shots after the tenth end. They then lost five of the next six ends to trail by one shot coming into the last end. They were able to rise to the occasion picking up three shots to win by two shots, 16 to 14.

Alan Hamilton’s rink was all square after 12 ends and then picked up five shots in the next two ends. They were able to maintain this lead and won by six shots, 19 to 13.

Jim Anderson’s rink started slowly and were 10 shots down after four ends and had not troubled the scorers. They continued to battle away and by the sixteenth end had reduced the margin to eight shots. They then won only one more end to lose by 14 shots, 14 to 28.

Even though Monbulk won on three rinks they lost the overall by five shots, 59 to 64 and have dropped to third position on the ladder.

Monbulk 3 played Yarra Junction at home in what turned out to be a close contest. Graham Mayo’s rink grabbed the ascendancy early and led by 12 shots after eight ends. They then lost the next three ends, but prevailed at the finish winning by 10 shots, 18 to eight. Alan Brooke’s rink was just four shots behind with five ends to play, but won only one more end to lose by 12 shots, nine to 21. This meant Monbulk lost the overall by two shots, 27 to 29.
