Two Dandenong Ranges residents received Order of Australia honours on Australia Day. Dr Graeme Moad, a highly-respected researcher and scientist, added an appointment as a companion to the Order of Australia to his long list of achievements and Janet McFadyen received a Medal of the Order of Australia for her community work supplying quilts to those in need. Ms McFadyen, who received the OAM for “service to the community through charitable organisations,” said she didn’t believe it when the award was announced. “This doesn’t happen to quilters, it happens to people who cure cancer or do something big through work, not to people that run the grassroots sort of events.” Ms McFadyen said. Dr Moad received his appointment as a companion due to his “eminent service to science, particularly polymer design and synthesis and radical polymerization, education through mentoring, and to professional scientific organisations.” Read more on page 6

In Cardinia Shire, Cockatoo RSL volunteer Carol Thompson shared the honour of being named Cardinia Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year. Ms Thompson also won the Connecting Cockatoo’s Citizen of the Year. Cockatoo Community market was named Community Event of the Year by both Cardinia Shire Council and Connecting Cockatoo.
