Two Dandenong Ranges residents received Order of Australia honours on Australia Day. Dr Graeme Moad, a highly-respected researcher and scientist, added an appointment as a companion to the Order of Australia to his long list of achievements and Janet McFadyen received a Medal of the Order of Australia for her community work supplying quilts to those in need.

Ms McFadyen, who received the OAM for “service to the community through charitable organisations,” said she didn’t believe it when the award was announced.

“This doesn’t happen to quilters, it happens to people who cure cancer or do something big through work, not to people that run the grassroots sort of events.” Ms McFadyen said.

Dr Moad received his appointment as a companion due to his “eminent service to science, particularly polymer design and synthesis and radical polymerization, education through mentoring, and to professional scientific organisations.”

by Black Summer fires

Helping to bounce back Cardinia Shire Council has announced a free business recovery workshop to assist small businesses in disasters response preparation and management.

The workshop will feature a presentation and question and answer session with Jan Barned, a renowned financial management trainer with over 20 years experience working with small business.

Following the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires, Covid-19 and the June storms, the workshop aims to provide businesses with a better understanding of how to plan and prepare for disaster events, including how businesses can identify key issues following disaster events and how they can restructure their businesses to benefit from future opportunities.

The details for the workshop are listed below: Date: Wednesday, 16 March 2022 Time: 10.00am – 2.00pm Where: Emerald Hills Hub, 402 BelgraveGembrook Rd, Emerald.

Cardinia Shire Council has announced a free business recovery workshop in March.

Sassafras-Ferny Creek and Belgrave fire brigades have reignited a project aimed at helping support colleagues in East Gippsland following the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires.

The initiative began with a successful expedition in February 2020, where volunteers spent a weekend in the region replacing hundreds of metres of fencing decimated by the bushfires. Further assistance was prevented by Covid-19 restrictions.

CFA member Lyndy Jewell came up with the idea while she spent time in the East Gippsland area alongside other brigade members during the worst of the 2019-2020 fire response.

Builder Ray Krumins helped secure thousands of dollars worth of tools and timber provided by Bowen’s timber and building supplies in Hallam and Hikoki Power Tools in Sydney.

Mr Krumins, alongside Sarah Krumins and John and Betty Schurink, returned to East Gippsland to evenly distribute power tools and other supplies to the Gelantipy CFA brigade, Buchan CFA brigade and the Bruthen Men’s Shed.

The Gelantipy brigade also received just over $3200, raised for community use.

“With the project effectively stalled for two years by Covid and the immediate need for assistance with fencing passed, it was felt the best thing we could do was distribute the hardware to our CFA colleagues and to the Men’s Shed,” Mr Krumins said.

“That way there will at least be an enduring expression of our support for these small communities that have endured some really tough times over the past two years.”

Kicking off 2022

By Parker McKenzie Primary schools around the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley returned for term one on Monday 31 January, with teachers, staff and student support busily preparing for their return in the lead up to the first day.

Students returned to government schools on 31 January for term one, which runs until April 8.

Ferny Creek Primary School principal Anni Smart said while there is some anxiety surrounding Covid cases, the school has implemented safe practice to ensure there is minimal disruption to term one.

“Our students arrive in bubbles and they leave in bubbles. Throughout the day, Year ones and twos are in one bubble, the threes and fours are in another separate from the fives and sixes,” she said.

“We’ve been through this already; this is the third year running now that we’ve had to have Covid safe practices here.”

Students at Ferny Creek Primary School will return to class on Tuesday 1 February.

“They all seem very enthused and very much

looking forward to coming back,” she said.

“We actually have a set of twins starting next year, so that’s quite exciting.”

Kallista Primary School acting-principal Rachel Stone said the staff and the student council have been busily preparing for the return of students.

“We’re all really excited that the students are going to be coming back on site on Monday,” she said.

“We are abiding by the Department of Education’s ventilation requirements and we’ve received our filter machine.”

The Victorian State Government promised 51,000 ventilation machines would be delivered to government and low-fee non-government schools by the start of term one.

To ensure minimal disruption to the start of the school year, the Victorian Government announced a four-week plan with a focus on rapid-antigen testing of staff and students.

The government is recommending all primary and secondary staff and students test themselves twice weekly to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

A south-east resident is leading the call for the Victorian Government to restart elective surgeries which had been paused due to the number of people currently in hospital.

Elective surgeries were temporarily suspended on Thursday 6 January to reduce the pressure on the Victorian health system, as a rise in Covid-19 diagnoses saw a spike in patients admitted to hospitals and severe shortages in available hospital staff.

Noelene Nolan sustained significant injuries when she was the victim of two terrifying home invasions in Hampton Park in 2017.

Since 2019 she has been waiting for facial surgery to treat the wound on the right side of her face, where her parotid gland slashed during the home invasion, which has caused the onset of Freys Syndrome, a condition where saliva leaks from the wound on her face onto her cheek when she eats or drinks.

Delay in receiving treatment for injuries has meant that she cannot receive treatment for respiratory issues, sleep apnoea or further surgery for vocal chord dysfunction.

“It started off as a category three, it is category two semi-emergency and soon moving to category one, because I risk permanent disfigurement,” Ms Nolan said.

“I have severe diabetes, I have severe lymphedema, I have the vocal chord dysfunction, and through constant long-term use, because I can’t get into a respiratory clinic, they’ve put me on prednisolone, which is a high-strength steroid which is

now starting to cause the early onset of glaucoma, which means I will eventually lose my vision.”

The Injuries sustained by Ms Nolan during the home invasion resulting in “numerous back fractures” and significant damage to both knees, so much so that she requires a walking frame and limits time spent standing to 10-minute intervals to avoid experiencing substantial pain.

Ms Nolan has also criticised the decision to recommence in vitro fertilisation (IVF) procedures in Victoria, announced on Sunday 23 January, citing double standards.

“How do we justify starting IVF treatment, and putting that above people who have serious medical conditions, which can be critical, and people are dying left right and centre?

“My biggest fear is that I’m scared I’m going to fall through the cracks, because all my other health conditions until my surgery, are being neglected.”

Speaking from Ms Nolan’s Cranbourne home on Tuesday, State Opposition leader Matthew Guy said that Victorians were experiencing a “health crisis”.

“People are suffering in this state because elective surgery has been stopped,” Mr Guy said.

“It is no longer tenable for the government to just say we’ll get around to it, “The government’s got to stop treating people like pawns in a political game with Covid-19. Restart elective surgery and do it straight away.”

Man collides with light-pole Highway Patrol officers spotted a man collide with a light pole while conducting speed checks on Mountain Highway, Bayswater at 10.15pm on Sunday 23 January.

Police said they stopped the 26-year-old man, who later returned a positive result for illicit drugs.

The man was issues with fines of $981 and his license has been suspended for 6 months for drug-driving.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident and the driver wasn’t injured despite heavy damage to his vehicle.

Calls for elective surgeries to resume

On 24 January, highway patrol stopped a 42-year-old man who was allegedly speeding on Mt Dandenong Tourist Road.

Police said the man had a stolen firearm, firearm parts and ammunition in his vehicle and he returned a positive reading for illicit drugs.

The man was arrested and will face firearm and drug driving charges.

A 56-year-old man returned a positive result for illicit drugs after being stopped driving on Sherbrooke Road, Sherbrooke on Australia Day, 26 January.

The man will attend court and appear before a magistrate because of a prior offense for a similar matter.

The penalty for a subsequent offence is a minimum 12-month licence suspension.

“Category two and three (surgeries), some of those conditions will become more debilitating, put more pressure on people’s health conditions and they will become lifethreatening,” Ms Crozier said.

Data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) released on Tuesday 25 January shows the number of patients being treated from Australia’s public hospital elective surgery waiting lists increased during 2020–21 as the hospitals worked to clear a backlog left by Covid-19-initiated suspensions the previous year.

Non-elective surgeries were temporarily suspended nationally in March 2020, reducing the number of elective surgeries performed in 2019-20 and contributed to creating a “backlog” of surgeries that had been delayed, according to AIHW spokesperson Dr. Adrian Webster. “‘Nationally, there were 754,600 admissions to hospital from the public elective surgery waiting lists in 2020–21, up from 688,000 admissions in 2019–20 but slightly lower than the 758,000 admissions in 2018– 19,” Dr Webster said.

There were 893,000 patients added to elective surgery waiting lists in 2020–21, up from 838,000 the previous year, and similar to the number added in 2018–19.

The AIHW defines elective surgery as “planned surgery that can be booked in advance as a result of a specialist clinical assessment.”

Kallista Community House closed The Kallista Community House will be closed until at least June because of damage caused by a ceiling collapse in October 2021.

Community House manager Sue Etherington said the building cannot be used because of health and safety concerns.

“We don’t have any more details for now but we’ll keep you posted with updates on our Facebook page,” Ms Etherington said.

“Hopefully our doors will be open again in July.”

She said the Community House will liase with Yarra Ranges Council, who they lease the building from, to organise repairs which are unlikely to be completed until June.

The Community House runs classes, workshops, social group activities, playgroups and also hires rooms in the facilities.

Citizen of the year

By Shelby Brooks A Cockatoo RSL volunteer has shared the honour of being named Cardinia Shire Council’s Citizen of the Year.

Carol Thompson received the honour during an online ceremony held Tuesday 25 January for the shire’s 2022 Australia Day Awards.

She shared the win with Pakenham Cricket Club president Philip Anning after the shire was unable to decide between the two worthy residents.

Carol Thompson received her honour because she has a long history of volunteering and has dedicated many hours to the Cockatoo RSL. She joined the committee as secretary and treasurer in 2015 and has also been the bar

and events manager.

Carol has worked tirelessly with committee members to increase patronage and turnover.

In addition to running the traditional Anzac Day and Remembrance Day events, Carol has been instrumental in establishing regular social events at the RSL, including the annual free Christmas Day lunch, pool and Uno competitions, trivia nights, karaoke and live music.

Due to her ongoing dedication and contributions, Carol was nominated RSL President of the Year.

Since she and her family moved to Cockatoo in 1998, Carol has also been involved in Cockatoo Community Creche and Cockatoo Country Market and has supported young people in need.

Mayor Springfield said this year’s winners were once again chosen from a strong field of nominees.

“Both Philip and Carol have contributed so much to the local community, and both deserve to be recognised,” Mayor Springfield said.

“Philip is a strong advocate for the advancement of community sport and junior sport development. As president of the Pakenham Cricket Club, he ensures the club fosters an inclusive competition, and he has tirelessly fundraised for charity.

“Carol has a long history of volunteering and has dedicated many hours to the Cockatoo RSL. She has worked with committee members to increase patronage and turnover and has been instrumental in establishing regular social events at the RSL.”

The Cockatoo Country Market has won Cardinia Shire’s top gong as the 2022 Community Event of the Year.

The market was adapted to a virtual market during Covid-19 lockdowns but organisers were excited to host the March 2021 Twilight Market in person.

It was the most successful yet, with more than 2,500 attendees across the event.

The market provides a low cost and low risk platform for micro, homebased and artisan traders, with free advertising and profile building for stallholders.

The market also provides opportunities for local community groups to fundraise and attract new volunteers and participants for their programs.

A community barbecue is provided for community groups each month, adding to the fundraising and networking opportunities.

Now in its seventh year, the market contributes to the ongoing support and development of community organisations via its community grants program, which has awarded more than $22,000 to local groups for a variety of projects.

The Cockatoo Country Market has been named the event of the year.

Warm morning for Cockatoo’s Australia Day awards

By Jonty Ralphsmith A local RSL volunteer has taken out Connecting Cockatoo’s Citizen of the Year at the 2022 Australia Day Awards.

Carol Thompson received the honour in front of a small community gathering at Alma Treloar Reserve on Wednesday 26 January.

Ms Thompson moved to Cockatoo with her family in 1998 and has since been an active contributor to the community: as president of the Cockatoo Community Creche, stallholder at the Cockatoo Market and through her work at the Cockatoo RSL. After Ms Thompson’s tireless work establishing social events as secretary and treasurer of the RSL from 2015, she was nominated as president in 2022, making her the only affiliate member currently serving as president in Victoria.

Upon receiving her award, she spoke of her shock and said that volunteering was in her blood.

“It was a great surprise. There’s so many worthy people in the community and deserving people so to be nominated and actually win was amazing,” she told the Gazette.

Cockatoo’s other nominee for Citizen of the Year, Elise Turnedge, performed her song, Sound of the Generators, during the event organised by Connecting Cockatoo Communities.

Police and fire crews were among those in attendance and morning tea was served after the awards ceremony, with lamingtons from the Cockatoo Bakery on offer.

The Soopa Doopa Bush Band, who perform frequently at local gatherings, provided entertainment with Australian bush songs on the sunny morning.

Father Bob Maguire was also in attendance and gave an entertaining address.

Jenny Reynolds for her contribution to the CFA, local cricket club and Cockatoo Senior Citizens Group.

The locals in attendance enjoyed catching up with Mrs Reynolds who has been forced to live in Pakenham since a tree damaged her house and caused her spinal and rib fractures in 2020, injuries she is slowly recovering from.

Mrs Reynolds said her absence had given her a greater appreciation for Cockatoo and she hoped to return in the next 12-24 months.

“People care for people here. You know that if there’s something wrong, there’s someone to help you because everyone backs each other and looks out for one another,” she said.

“It’s good to be here and get thanks so we know we’re appreciated.”

Jacynta Howden won Youth Citizen of the Year for her volunteering efforts at the Cockatoo Country Market and the Cockatoo and Emerald Emergency Support Team.

With her effervescent and affable personality, she is known widely around town so many people stopped to say hello during the interview.

“I give a massive thanks to Mum for pushing me outside my comfort zone and encouraging me to volunteer,” she said.

“It’s just how I was raised. I don’t feel like I’ve done that much in all honesty.”

Emerald and Cockatoo Emergency Support Team was awarded the Community Group of the Year for its provision of relief and recovery after weather events, particularly the storms in 2021.

The Event of the Year went to the Cockatoo Community Market; 2500 people attended the March 2021 twilight market and for large parts of the year the market adapted to hosting virtual events.

Across its seven years of operation, it has raised over $22,000 to go towards local projects.

Harry’s symbol of hope

By Parker McKenzie Olinda local Harry Bruce-Tennant has won 2022 Young Citizen of the Year at the Yarra Ranges Council’s Australia Day awards.

14-year-old Harry won the award for his thoughtfulness, care and compassion for his community in the wake of the June storms.

He developed an idea for gemstone bracelets to be shared with community members as a reminder of the community spirit throughout the natural disaster.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jim Childs said the bracelets were a symbol of hope for the community.

“Council is pleased to award Harry the Young Citizen of the year award,” Mayor Childs said.

“We thank him for his hard work during our community’s darkest days.”

After finding a wholesaler, he set up a website for people to tell their stories and distributed the bracelets at emergency relief centres in the Dandenong Ranges.

Harry has shared more than 500 bracelets to people over five months after receiving funding through Yarra Ranges Council.

Harry took the time out from being a ball boy at the Australian Open to accept his reward.

“There are many young people doing great

things in the community,” Harry said.

“My personal motto is seek respect, not attention, it lasts longer.”

Harry has also been chosen as a finalist in the Edstart Achievement Awards for Social Impact, where he received a grant, and also successfully applied for a Regional Arts Victoria Creative Recovery Grant.

A group of year five and six students at The Patch Primary School also won the Ken McIntosh Memorial Award for young environmental achievers.

Gang Green – formed in 1998 to help students understand the environment and its value – meets every Tuesday afternoon under the supervision of STEM educator Nina DeVreeze and school gardener Ken Colley.

The work of the students has helped shape the landscape at the school and helped provide outdoor classrooms.

Students have designed indigenous wildlife corridors, ornamental gardens and wetland environments which mitigate the impact of stormwater.

Residents, groups who have gone ‘above and beyond’

By Callum Ludwig Several local organisations, businesses and people have received certificates of recognition at the Yarra Ranges Council 2022 Australia Day awards for their work within the Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley community.

David Jewell received a certificate for his IT support at Burrinja Cultural Centre, where he has assisted with technology and infrastructure upgrades for over 23 years. Mr Jewell has helping to improve the experience for visitors and community members through his work.

Mr Jewell has helped facilitate 20,000 tickets being purchased annually and guided Burrinja Cultural Centre’s services efficiently and effectively.

Beyond his work with Burrinja, Mr Jewell has offered his services to the wider community, with the Anglican Church in Tecoma, the Sherbrooke University of the Third Age and Belgrave Heights Christian School all benefitting from his generosity and assistance.

Mr Jewell’s volunteer IT support is estimated to have provided more than $40,000 worth of services to Burrinja Cultural Centre alone.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Jim Child said Mr Jewell is a key cog in keeping the Ferntree Gully and Dandenong Ranges community running smoothly.

Alongside a group of volunteers, Mr Pedley set up The Hangout, a place where those affected by the storms could feel safe, connect with and share the company of others, and warm themselves by a fire that ran every hour of every day for an astonishing three weeks.

Mayor Child believes Mr Pedley, his wife Tracey, his family and the small group of volunteers should all be commended for their efforts.

“The selflessness and caring evident in The Hangout is something Luke should be extremely proud of,” Mayor Child said.

“We’re thrilled to present Luke with this Certificate of Recognition, and proud to have him in our community.”

Upwey Pizza was recognised for going above and beyond what is expected of a local business by giving back to their community who faced the difficulties during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Upwey Pizza owners became well known for their willingness to pay it forward for their own customers, as well as supplying food to soup kitchens each week.

They have also supported local schools, sporting and recreational clubs through food, sponsorships and awards.

Mayor Child said the award reflects what Upwey Pizza gave to the community.

“The kindness and generosity shown by the Upwey pizza team is worthy of this cer-

tificate of recognition.” mayor Child said.

Emerald CFA captain Paul Yandle and his Help for the Hills Dandenong Ranges taskforce were recognised for their important role in helping the community still affected by the June storms.

Mr Yandle, utilising his 21 years of leadership, gathered a 200-strong skilled workforce for the Help for the Hills emergency response effort.

The diverse group was able to bring together chainsaw experience, truck and machinery donations, funding and time, with 125 storm-impacted properties being cleared over 3500 volunteer hours.

by Mr Yandle and Help for the Hills has made a world of difference for people impacted by the June storms.

“We’ve seen over the years that disaster can bring out the best in people,” Mayor Child said.

“A willingness to lend a hand, listen and help, putting others ahead of yourself, and caring and creating a safety to catch others going through some of the worst times of their lives. Paul and the wider Help for the Hills group’s work is a perfect example of this.”

Plans are currently underway to reform the taskforce ahead of the 2022 bush fire season.

Quilter receives deserved award

By Parker McKenzie Janet McFadyen didn’t believe she’d been honoured with an Order of Australia when it was first announced.

“This doesn’t happen to quilters, it happens to people who cure cancer or do something big through work, not to people that run the grassroots sort of events.” Ms McFadyen said.

The Order of Australia - for “service to the community through charitable organisations,” - was given to Ms McFadyen for her donation of thousands of quilts to people in need since she started making them in the early 1990s.

“We moved down to Ferntree Gully four years ago to look after the grandchildren. I’m proud of what I was doing in country Victoria and sending quilts around regional areas and interstate, but since we’ve been in Melbourne it’s been a lot easier to network.” she said.

Ms McFadyen was a health manager at a hospital in Shepparton for 35 years before moving to the South-East of Melbourne, where she said she saw people in need and felt compelled to help.

When the Black Summer bushfires occurred, Ms McFadyen organised 2300 quilts to be donated to residents of the worst affected areas like King Lake.

“That’s when I named it Oz Comfort Quilts, because until then it was just Jan Mac Quilts,” she said.

“I was getting so many donations from around Australia and even overseas that I thought it was better to make it a more inclusive group.”

During 2009 – at the height of the devastation during the bushfires – stories from media outlets around the world helped bring attention to Oz Comfort Quilts, and Ms McFadyen said she asked for donations of blocks to be stitched into larger quilts.

“I received thousands of blocks all around the world, from South Africa, Israel, Reunion Island, Canada, Latin America, England and lots from Holland, Germany and all over the place. It was just incredible,” she said.

“Most quilts would take 35 of these blocks and some people would send four to six of them, then I just combined them all into quilts.”

Last year, Ms McFadyen and her network of quilters from around Australia and the world donated 753 quilts to people in need, whether it was from natural disaster, homelessness, drug and alcohol recovery or domestic violence.

“We give it as a gift to help people when they’re ready to recover. During the bushfires we don’t give them immediately, we wait until they’re rebuilding and they’re ready to move back into a new home,” she said.

“It’s a gift for hope and the future, and it is always provided through local community groups.”

Ms McFadyen said she received the Paul Harris award from Kangaroo Flat Rotary Club in 2008 for her donations of quilts through them, although being an Order of Australia recipient has left her in disbelief.

“They went to people affected by the tsunamis in Asia and East Timor at the time, and

people affected by drought,” “That was pretty incredible. This is just mind blowing; I can’t believe that this would happen.”

Through the Covid-19 pandemic, the network of quilters has expanded into making knitted garments and blankets, clothes for kids and even Santa sacks for the festive period.

Ms McFadyen said making the quilts has helped not just people in need, but also herself and others who have contributed to the cause.

“I saw a lot of the need in the community and always planned to do this when I retired,” she said.

“It’s not just helping people who get the quilts, it’s also the people who are making them, it helps them as well.”

The late Margaret Hall has been awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for her service to the Emerald community.

Margaret (Marg) and her husband Desmond (Des) were drawn to the hills from suburban Melbourne with the purchase of a weekender in Cockatoo in 1980 with a plan to retire there, which they ultimately did in 1991.

They loved the trees, birds and local environment, and soon became part of the Cockatoo and Emerald community.

In 1991 Marg joined the Emerald Uniting Church, becoming part of the choir and commenced writing the church’s monthly bulletin, which she continued for over a decade.

She undertook various tasks with efficiency and enthusiasm, including church readers, flower rosters and stepping in as a backup for the organist.

For the 25 year anniversary of the Emerald Uniting Church, she authored A Church of their Own: 25 Years of the Uniting Church in Emerald.

Marg was a founding member of the Emerald University of the Third Age (U3A), which sought to establish an outlet for members of the local community to continue to learn and share their knowledge and skills.

With Des, Marg ran the Armchair Travel Group, sharing their travel experiences across many decades (they met as working travellers in London and married there in 1960) and opening their home for courses and celebrations.

She was also involved with the Garden Group, which was a great outlet for her passion of all things floral.

Always contributing to the communities in which she lived, Marg brought her positive outlook and bubbling personality to helping others.

Marg passed away in August 2020.

Dr Graeme Moad appointed a Companion of the OAM

By Parker McKenzie On Australia Day, Dr Graeme Moad added being appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia to a long list of achievements and awards.

The Sassafras scientist and researcher, who has had an illustrious career since he started as a research scientist at the CSIRO in 1979, has authored or co-authored over 200 publications and co-invented 37 patent families.

“Most of my achievements have been in the area of polymer chemistry, which is sort of making big molecules and in ways of constructing them more closely,” he said.

“That’s what I have received a number of awards for, like from the Academies of Science and Technology.”

Dr Moad was a joint-winner of the CluniesRoss Award from the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering in 2014 and won the David Craig Medal from the Australian Academy of Science in 2020 to name a few of his honours.

He joined Australia’s only order of chivalry for his “eminent service to science, particularly polymer design and synthesis and radical polymerization, education through mentoring, and to professional scientific organisations.”

Moad said collaboration is the heart of the scientific community.

“Achievements are being as a chain rather than an individual really.” he said.

Dr Moad was chief research scientist at the CSIRO from 1999 until 2015, Chairmen of the Polymer Division of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute from 1999 until 2001, Councillor for Australia in the Pacific Polymer Federation from 2003 until 2011 and is currently the Australian representative at the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.

A fellow at the CSIRO, the Australian Academy and Sciences since 2012 and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering since 2021, Dr Moad said raising scientific facts can sometimes be difficult.

“Science being popular is a good thing and it’s just that we can’t get distracted or tell people what they want to hear,” he said.

“Science sometimes takes second place to either monetary gain or popularity. I think there’s a reason why science gets perverted, basically. Things like climate change and the pandemic.”

Dr Moad said many of the issues the world faces have solutions already, although they need to be adopted and trusted without being turned into political issues.

“You have to remember that science is not a set of facts, it’s a set of probabilities and the scientifically proven way is the way it seems most probable,” “One of the important things about science is it is to a degree applicable and then if you really knew what science was going to do, we wouldn’t have to do this.”

Dr Moad said he and his fellow scientists at CSIRO Clayton are currently conducting research on how to address the plastic waste issue and have “been working on that for quite some time.”

“In most cases what happens with plastics is the rules are dictated by price and availability rather than the ultimate fate of the plastics,” he said.

“Now we have a serious plastic problem which has been caused by that situation, so we have to try and find something to do about it.”

Next door to the CSIRO at Monash University, Dr Moad has been an adjunct professor since 2012, a role he has also performed at the University of New England from 2014 until 2019.

Dr Moad said the presentation of his Companion of the Order of Australia will be on 6 May in Canberra.

“I didn’t make it down for the last one though.” he said while laughing.

Finding a voice for Casey

By Parker McKenzie Voices Of Casey has launched its campaign to find an independent candidate who represents the views of the community for the next federal election with an information night, drawing from the experience of other political engagement groups who have helped elect independents to parliament.

The meeting was held on Tuesday 27 January and was attended by 21 community members and two guests: Alana Johnson, a past president for Voices of Indi, chair of the Victorian Women’s Trust and a director for the community independent program, and Susan Benedyka, an independent Senate candidate for Victoria.

Spokesperson Fionn Bowd led the meeting and began by outlining what the Voices of Casey is trying to achieve.

“Some of you may know a little bit about this and some of you may not have heard of the Voices movement that is sweeping the land,” Ms Bowd said.

“Alongside existing members in Helen Haines and Zali Steggall, we’re also seeing a large number of community independent candidates who are standing for election all around Australia,

Picture: SUPPLIED “Some of the issues that seem to be really bringing people together around Australia in the community are climate action, gender equality, action in relation to gender violence and gender inequality and also federal accountability.”

Voices For Indi, which formed in 2012 after people within the electorate felt they weren’t being represented by their elected officials, launched a framework of community engagement which has inspired over 40 similar groups around Australia.

to federal parliament in 2013 and 2016, and Helen Haines in 2019. Indi is the only federal electorate to be represented by two successive independent candidates.

Ms Johnson said you cannot count the number of different ways the Voices For movement is important.

“Voices groups are actually an antidote to the ills of our representative democracy dominated by the major parties, who are becoming increasingly involved in partisan politics,” she said. “it’s not going to happen unless we take action.”

Ms Johnson said Voices For has changed how people view politics in Indi.

“Our whole modus operandi has to be different and it has to be driven by ordinary people,” she said.

“People now have a sense that politics is part of our everyday life, politics doesn’t have to be a battleground, that you can talk to people who have different party preferences and still talk about what’s best for Indi.”

A Voices group, using the model developed in Indi, also endorsed Zali Steggall in Warringah when she beat former-Prime Minister Tony Abbott in the 2019 federal election.

The Casey electorate is located in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne and includes the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges. Suburbs in the electorate include Belgrave, Kallista, Kalorama, Monbulk, Olinda, Sassafras, Tecoma and Upwey.

Voices of Casey will be hosting a meet-andgreet with former Indi MP Cathy McGowan and writer Tim Flannery on 8 February before they begin to choose a candidate for the federal election.

Anyone interested in running as the Voices Of Casey candidate has until 7 February to apply, before an intensive selection process begins.

Ms Dowd told Star Mail on 25 January the panel to select the candidate will be made up of members from established Voices groups like Indi, to give guidance to a new group with dwindling time before a federal election that will be held in May at the latest.

“The philosophy isn’t vote for me, it’s about voting for someone who represents the communities’ values,” she said.

“If they tick all those boxes when they apply, there will then be a panel interview.”

Why have no women nominated for the Streeton Ward?

By Parker McKenzie The Streeton Ward by-election nominations have shown a noticeable shift in proposed councillor representation.

In 2020, women won the majority of the first preference votes in the council elections, but fast forward two years and no women nominated for the 2022 Yarra Ranges’ byelection before the deadline closed 18 January.

The by-election was triggered when former councillor Cathrine Burnett-Wake accepted a Liberal party vacancy in the State Legislative Council.

Now six men are vying for the position: Andrew Fullagar, Wil Mikelsons, David Hill, Gavin Wooten, Doug MacDonald and Jarrad Page.

Ms Burnett-Wake and Amy Muratore both ran in the 2020 Council election for Stratton Ward and have spoken to Star Mail about women’s representation in local politics.

Ms Muratore said it was “a little bit heartbreaking” to see no women nominate after Yarra Ranges broke records for the number of women who were nominated in the 2020 Council elections.

“I’ve had about eight women contact me asking, who do I vote for? Do you know anything?” she said.

“They don’t see themselves represented in that ballot.”

In the 2020 council elections, 272 women were elected to local councils around Victo-

ria - the highest amount ever, with 43.8 per cent of councillors being women.

Ms Burnett-Wake said she would have “loved to have seen a woman put their hands up” for the by-election.

“The last two years have been difficult on families and finding that balance if you have young children, so maybe the timing wasn’t great,” she said.

“The reason I did put up my hand was to ensure that there was diversity in the council because at that point, there was only one woman out of nine councillors.”

Ms Muratore agreed the timing of the byelection may have influenced some women’s ability to run.

pects it, so it’s harder for women to drop everything and give it a crack,” Ms Muratore said.

Women received the majority of the first preference vote in 2020, with a combined total of 57.18 per cent.

Ms Muratore received 17.91 per cent of the first preference vote in 2020 and was undecided on nominating for the by-election until the last moment.

Ms Muratore said there are several barriers women face when entering local politics.

“I think the rules are different for men.

The biggest question I was asked last time I campaigned was who was looking after my daughter, not what I thought about things,” she said.

“Not what I thought about climate change, not the things I wanted to do, not the skills I had as a teacher and a communicator.

“We look at men and we automatically see leadership qualities, while we don’t look at women and see what I feel are leadership qualities: passion, communication skills, organisation. No one’s more organised than a stay-at-home mum.”

Ms Burnett-Wake said while there are a lot of politically-engaged women involved in politics on a local level, there are still ways representation could be improved.

“A lot of councils do consultation and put together committees, we always have great representation on those. They’re not as time commitment heavy as being a counsellor,

which is quite a big commitment,” she said.

“Perhaps we need to do more in respect to mentorship programs through the council to encourage more women. I know that there are independent programs, but it would be great to see council foster and develop programs too.”

The Victorian State Government has set a target of reaching 50 per cent representation of women in council by 2025 and formed a Gender Equality Advisory Committee to help promote the push.

On a local level, Ms Muratore believes Yarra Ranges Council is making positive changes for women.

“I think the current CEO of the Yarra Ranges council, Tammy Rose, is fantastic, she’s a huge gender advocate,” she said.

“She’s made a lot of changes and has done a lot of things to change the culture at Yarra Ranges. I think they are taking a step in the right direction.”

For women interested in a career in politics, Ms Burnett-Wake recommended a yearly course she took, Pathway to Politics for Women at Melbourne University.

“Anyone looking to enter politics should seriously consider taking the course; it is non-politically affiliated and helped me when I made the move to State politics.”

Streeton Ward includes Upwey, Tremont, Ferny Creek, Sassafras and Mount Dandenong and parts of Olinda, Upper Ferntree Gully, Kilsyth and Montrose.

Projects get cash splash Monbulk Community Link and Olinda Recreation Reserve Pavilion will be getting an upgrade as part of four new projects in the Yarra Ranges initiated by the state government.

On behalf of Local Government Minister Shaun Leane, Deputy Premier and Member for Monbulk James Merlino announced the Yarra Ranges Shire council will receive a total $2.28 million towards four projects as part of this years Growing Suburbs Fund. The Yarra Ranges is considered one of Melbourne’s growing areas.

The funding was announced at the opening of the upgraded Monbulk Skate and Scooter Park, which was the result of a $300,000 grant from the 2019-20 allocation of the Growing Suburbs Fund.

The popular skate park has increased from 250 metres squared to 900, because previously the park was not large enough to cater to skaters of all skill levels. Yarra Ranges Council also contributed $300,000 top the project. $1.5 million of the grant will go towards climate resilient buildings for the community, a $3 million Yarra Ranges project in conjunction

The buildings will help the community during natural disasters and extreme weather events including heatwaves and floods.

Mr Leane said the Growing Suburbs Fund will support Ferntree Gully, Dandenong Ranges and other Yarra Ranges residents, whether it be giving them more opportunities to be outdoors or through climate resilient community buildings.

“Every Growing Suburbs Fund project we

support helps deliver vital facilities, creates jobs and makes a real difference for our fastest-growing communities,” he said.

“It’s really important communities like Yarra Ranges have the infrastructure to support everyone that lives there.”

Mr Merlino said the Yarra Ranges is a great place to live, and he knows the Growing Suburbs Fund is only going to serve our reputation well.

“I’m delighted the Andrews Government has continued its support for our thriving community through projects like climate resilient cuildings for our community,” he said.

“These new investments will be great for families, children and everyone in our community.”

Since being announced in 2015, the Growing Suburbs Fund has invested $375 million in almost 300 projects, representing over $1.07 billion investment in local infrastructure.

In the Yarra Ranges Shire alone, the Fund has now invested nearly $28.4 million towards 30 projects.

Council investigates by-election signage complaint

By Parker McKenzie Yarra Ranges Council has confirmed it is looking into electorate signage for the Streeton Ward by-election after a candidate complained about their placement.

David Hill – who has been nominated to run in the February Streeton Ward by-election – has issued a complaint to both Yarra Ranges Council and the Victorian Electoral Commission about other candidates signage.

“I make this complaint as it effects my campaign whilst I follow the rules as I under-

stand them,” he wrote in his complaint to the VEC. “I would ask for this candidate’s nomination to be withdrawn.”

The VEC told Star Mail issues related to permits for signage are the responsibility of Yarra Ranges Council to handle.

Acting Director of Communities Ben Waterhouse said the Safer Communities Team investigates reports of electoral signage placed on public land without a permit.

“Electoral signage may be placed on pri-

vate property – such as a home or business - provided that they are not a distraction or a hazard for motorists, do not contain offensive material, and have been placed with the permission of the land owner or resident,” he said.

“We encourage community members to contact us if they are unsure whether signage has been placed appropriately, by calling us on 1300 368 333 or emailing the details, such as location, and photos if possible, to mail@ yarraranges.vic.gov.au.”

Ballots for the by-election will be distributed through post to every person on the voter roll between Tuesday 1 February and Thursday 3 February before voting closes on Friday 18 February 2022.

Saturday 19 February has been prescribed as Election Day by the Electoral Commission, with Monday 28 February 2022 the latest date all results will be declared.

Around 12,415 Victorians are enrolled in Streeton Ward, which includes Upwey, Sassafras, Olinda and surrounds.

Casey’s trainees for 2021 In late December I announced the winner and runners-up of my 2021 Casey Apprentice/ Trainee of the Year Awards.

With the pandemic and the economic challenges it has brought, it is more important than ever to recognise, reward, and encourage careers in local trades and small businesses.

Local apprentices and trainees, like all of us, have had to get used to a lot of change over the last two years. Lockdowns meant that many could not work. Despite the difficulties, my annual awards have sought to encourage and value excellence in our local trades.

Since 2009, my Casey Apprentice/Trainee of the Year Awards have been doing just this.

The apprentices and trainees of today will help form the backbone of our small businesses and local economy into the future.

Along with the finalists, each was nominated by local business owners and operators who value and support their workers.

Local trades and businesses are crucial to economic life in our suburbs and towns. Encouragingly, businesses have nominated successive apprentices/trainees over the years.

A committee of four prominent local business leaders met to decide on the finalists and the winners for each year.

In a speech in Parliament towards the end of last year, I thanked the judges: Phil Munday from the automotive sector, Sue O’Brien from hospitality, Nick Fraraccio from manufacturing and Clive Larkman from horticulture for

giving their valuable time and being part of these awards from the beginning.

I think it’s something special that a group of four people who donate their time to do this, have stayed together for all those years in dedication to our local community.

2021’s winners, along with all of the nominees, came from a range of industries: manufacturing, horticulture, landscaping, electrical, plumbing, glazing and automotive.

Due to tough times, some sectors including, retail and hairdressing/beauty were not in the position to nominate, but over the years, they have provided many nominees and finalists.

2021’s winners and finalists, like those from the past, have so much potential to achieve in life and business.

Also worthy of our attention are emerging authors such as Jamine Marina Lau, Mehreen Faruqi, Chelsea Watego, Sara El Sayed, Ruhi Lee, Eugen Bacon, and Paige Clark.

So, which title from 2021 caught this reviewer’s eye? That would be She Who Became the Sun by Shelly Parker-Chan, an author “raised on a steady diet of Greek myths, Arthurian legend and Chinese tales of suffering and tragic romance”. A review is surely to come.

Good movie but generic Mother/Android Starring Chloë Grace Moretz, Algee Smith and Raúl Castillo Rated MA15+ The directorial debut of Mattson Tomlin, Mother/Android is a sci-fi paradox: a welltold but poorly-written story.

Several months after a violent android uprising, heavily-pregnant Georgia (Chloë Grace Moretz) and her boyfriend Sam (Algee Smith) struggle to reach a safe haven.

Mother/Android’s plot sets a clear dramatic objective in Georgia and Sam reaching Boston, and Georgie’s imminent labour and her turbulent relationship with Sam ramp up the stakes.

Moretz and Smith have solid chemistry, and the second act features a very effective stealth sequence driven by furtive movements and stark sound design, building to a genuinely shocking twist.

on spoken exposition, and much of the dialogue is contrived and long-winded.

Despite this, the film is frustratingly slim on details about the androids, and the EMP weapon is a poorly-explained plotdevice with little tangible impact on the plot.

The film also has some terribly jarring edits and very distracting shaky handheld camerawork (which is an increasingly prevalent problem in modern filmmaking).

The android designs are generic, with blue blood and Terminator-style skeletons.

Moreover, name-dropping Karel Capek’s 1921 play Rossum’s Universal Robots in a monologue about inevitable robot resistance is incredibly heavy-handed.

Mother/Android is a suspenseful, wellacted film with a great twist and an affecting human core, but has dire dialogue, irritating cinematography and few ideas of its own, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

Bowls bistro delights The Monbulk Bowling Club continues to stand strong in the face of adversity, providing food, fun and friendship for locals even through hard times.

A combination of Covid restrictions and extreme weather conditions have proven difficult for businesses in the region. Outside of lockdowns, the team at the Monbulk Bowling Club is now open to the public, serving delicious, good value meals and thirst-quenching drinks, as well as providing a warm and welcoming family-friendly atmosphere.

Locals are encouraged to gather loved ones and enjoy a casual game of barefoot bowls or a meal together. Hosting bowls competitions for over 55 years, the club caters for beginners to experienced bowlers.

“It is a place where you really get that small town, easy-going feeling with enough space to cater for all sorts of catch ups from a few friends to large functions,” said Brendan.

As Summer is here the club’s bistro menu is also undergoing a change, providing lighter menu items to choose from, while keeping the classics available.

In the last six months, we have welcomed onboard Dr Grace Cheok (FRACGP), a female doctor with over 10 years’ experience in general practice specialising in family medicine.

Dr Grace works on Tuesdays from 9am-6pm.

We have also added another psychologist Roslyn Delrayne to the team. Roslyn works on Mondays from 9am-5pm. She provides both paid and bulk-billed services for her patients.

On the flu vaccine front, The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has recently commented on the success of the

2020 and 2021 flu campaign. It was attributed to a combination of increased members of the population immunising themselves against the flu, along with the extra measures of hygiene safety in place due to the pandemic like face masks, increased hand sanitisation, and social distancing. It is worth noting that these increased hygienic measure cultivated during the pandemic are useful in helping in the fight against other common viral illnesses like the flu by decreasing or slowing its spread.

Find your happy feet After months of lockdowns and disruption to our dance classes, gym routines and local sports our feet are looking forward to getting back to their happy best. However for many of us it hasn’t been smooth sailing returning to our pre covid activities. Tanya and Laura, two podiatrists working in Emerald and Monbulk with more.

“Keeping our feet happy is so important.

When mine aren’t happy I’m not able to do my boot camp class or walk the dogs as far” says podiatrist Tanya Contis from PridePlus Health.

“We’ve found that plenty of locals up here in the Hills are struggling with unhappy feet now we’re moving about again” adds Laura Ward.

Artist paints live for TV

By Parker McKenzie Ferntree Gully artist Olga Megele will be appearing on the TV show Colour In Your Life, which is broadcast in over 50 countries.

The show, hosted by artist Graeme Stevenson OAM, is filming the episode in Ferntree Gully for its 22nd season.

Ms Megele said the opportunity is both exciting and terrifying.

“There’s about six of us who are being filmed in this batch, all the way from the country to Melbourne locations,” she said.

“It’s a bit exciting and it’s nice to be in the company with other artists who are getting their work into the public view as well.”

The TV show was started by Mr Stevenson in Murwillumbah New South Wales, and now films artists from seven countries.

Mrs Megele said it was a fantastic opportunity to show her work to the world.

“One motif that appears in my work is a white picket fence, it represents the barriers we face,” she said.

“There is a certain amount of bravery needed to get past and through our barriers.”

The show, which Mr Stevenson describes as “a bit like a cooking show but for artists,” has been viewed over 100 million times through online streaming and is aired on TV networks in over 50 countries.

“When I was stuck at home without much around me I looked at my environments and put together various items I had and painted them as little snapshots,” she said.

“They’re quite small and then I’ve done very large abstract pieces and abstracted landscapes.”

Ms Megele, who is a member of the Ferntree Gully Art Society, will be painting an original piece for Colour In Your Life when the film-

ing crew arrives in Ferntree Gully in February.

Belgrave distillers take out best botanical gin award

By Parker McKenzie Belgrave-based distillery GinFinity has won the Best Australian Signature Botanical at the World Gin Awards 2022.

GinFinity, which opened its doors to the public in March 2021, is co-owned by brothers Ben and Cal Pratt with their cousin Andrew.

Ben Pratt said it was “Tremendously exciting” to win the award for their bubblegum gin.

“It was so exciting and took us all by surprise. We’re just absolutely rapt,” he said.

“This particular gin we’re talking about the bubblegum gin - is a newer product, we developed it about six months ago.”

The two brothers and their cousin have been distilling liquors for 16 years and dabbled in brewing beer too.

Mr Pratt said the idea for the gin started when they tried the flavouring technique in rum.

“We’re very interested in fermentation side of things, so we are always playing around with different sorts of wild fermentation and different inoculations trying to produce different esters,” he said.

“We thought that we could probably combine a couple and produce the same ester that makes bubblegum flavour, “We were successful in producing that and then we thought it would be amazing to put that in into botanical gin.”

Mr Pratt said it’s been a long road, but they couldn’t have asked for a better start to 2022 after the last few years.

“The whole industry will know it’s been a tough one,” he said.

“Whether it’s being able to open or having

to be closed and serving takeaway, and then staff staffing issues, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster.”

His brother Cal Pratt thanked people in the local area on Facebook for supporting the distillery.

“We are absolutely thrilled to be doing what we love in such a beautiful area in the hills,” he said.

“We hope long-term this kind of thing will really help regain some lost tourism back to the area.”

The World Gin Awards is a part of the World Drinks Awards and is held every year.

Make every drop count

By Callum Ludwig Yarra Valley Water has partnered up with City West Water, Melbourne Water, South East Water in a water conservation initiative called Make Every Drop Count.

The campaign’s main message is ‘Target 155’ to reach a daily average of 155 litres per person, per day to limit their water use.

Based on statistics, an average Greater Melbourne resident currently uses 159 litres of water per person per day. Managing Director of Yarra Valley Water Pat McCafferty believes the campaign will making people think about their values and where they can start to reduce water consumption in the first place.

“We know over 80 per cent of people who live in the metropolitan area are keen on water conservation, but there’s almost a third who don’t think they’re doing enough,” Mr McCafferty said.

“Interestingly, over 60 per cent don’t actually

know how much water they’re using.”

Melbourne is the nation’s fastest growing city, with a predicted population of over 10 million by 2051 - almost double the current population. As a result, greater pressure will be placed on water supplies and Target 155 aims to create incremental drops in water usage in order to maintain a sustainable level for future generations.

Mr McCafferty is excited by the discussion the campaign is encouraging, and particularly the ideas Yarra Ranges residents are coming up with and sharing.

“As we engage with people, particularly in the Dandenongs, there is a consciousness about looking at the environment and being sustainable,” Mr McCafferty said.

“There’s a lot of ways to save water around the home, but there’s no monopoly on good ideas.” Residents of metropolitan areas as a whole have already adopted a positive attitude towards improving the efficiency of water us-

age, with 159 litres of water per person, per day seeing a decrease from 162 and 161 litres per person, per day in 2018-2019 and 2017-18 respectively. The Make Every Drop Count website also lists different ways you can reduce water usage in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry and outdoors. Around the house, the bathroom is the primary use of water seeing 40 per cent of the total usage, followed by outdoors at 30 per cent, the laundry at 20 per cent and the kitchen at 10 per cent.

Using buckets to hold or collect water in the shower or when washing a car are two ways water usage can be cut down in the bathroom and outdoors, and leftover water can be reused on the gardens.

There are some permanent water restriction rules Yarra Ranges residents should also be aware of: Hand held hoses must be fitted with a trigger nozzle and leak free.

than a hand held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle or an automatic watering system between the hours of 6pm and 10 am.

Hard surfaces (including, driveways, paths, concrete, tiles, timber decking) cannot be cleaned with water unless where cleaning is required as a result of an accident, fire, health hazard, safety hazard or other emergency, if staining to the surface has developed and then only once a season or in the course of construction or renovation.

In the laundry and kitchen, it is encouraged you try and only run your washing machine and dishwasher on a full load, and turn on eco modes if your appliances have one.

Target 155 argues residents all simply need to use only around half a bucket less of water each day in order to achieve the goal. Yarra Ranges residents can also be in with a chance to win weekly spot prizes, or a grand prize of $2000 by sending in their own water-saving tips and tricks.

Upwey Community Link reopens after staff shortages to keep their links open, but the developing Covid-19 situation means changes to their services may occur at any time.

Any changes to the operation of council services will be updated via social media and their website.

The Community Link provides Family, Youth and Children’s services, Maternal and Child Health services, Early Childhood Intervention Services and a Vic Roads Agency.

The Upwey Community Link will reopen on Monday 31 January after closing on 11 January due to staff shortages.

The centre will reopen at 9am and will close at 5pm, returning to normal operating hours onsite.

The Community Link in Monbulk was the closest for Ferntree Gully and Dandenong Ranges residents to remain open during this time, as well as those in Lilydale and Healesville. The Yarra Ranges council intends

Soccer trials begin

By Parker McKenzie Monbulk Ranges Soccer Club is running trials for their women’s State League One team, as the clubs pushes for promotion after the previous two seasons were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trials will be held on Thursdays and Tuesdays until 17 February.

“Want to be part of something special?” the club said.

“Here at Monbulk we are working hard on a project to develop players to reach their individual goals and potential while being a part of our clubs goal to achieve promotion to the VPL.” The club trains and plays at the Monbulk Regional Soccer Facility, which features two synthetic pitches. It is seeking players for both the seniors and reserves teams.

Senior coach Aaron Jones said the team looked set to be promoted before the season was curtailed by the pandemic.

“We were on track to get there last year, but unfortunately everybody was in the same boat with the season being cancelled,” he said.

“It’s exciting to get back on the pitch.”

Football Victoria’s scheduled 2021 season was cancelled because of the lockdowns and restrictions put in place because of the Covid-19 pandemic, with teams playing in the same league in 2022 they were set to compete in previously.

Mr Jones said the club wants to push forward and bring as many players down as possible.

The women’s State League One season will kick-off April 24 and will be an 18-game home and away fixture featuring 10 teams before finals and promotion/relegation playoffs.

Weekend top four Saturday pennant saw Monbulk 1 take on Vermont South hoping for maximum points that would move them back into the top four.

Jim Bras’ rink found themselves three shots down after five ends, but then won eight of the next 10 ends to lead by 12 shots. They then won only one more end to fall over the line by one shot, 23 to 22.

Brian Smith’s rink had a close contest with scores level after the fifth, twelfth and seventeenth ends. The Monbulk rink won three of the last four ends to win by three shots, 17 to 14.

Eric Markham’s rink started well and led by 10 shots after eight ends. They then had a lapse in concentration and by the seventeenth end only led by two shots. The Monbulk rink then fought hard to win the last four ends to run out winners by nine shots, 26 to 17.

Tim Stapleton’s rink started brilliantly and were eight shots in front after six ends. Their opponents then won six of the next seven ends to level the scores.

The Monbulk rink then finished strongly winning six of the last eight ends to win by seven shots, 23 to 16. Monbulk won the overall by 20 shots, 89 to 69 and have moved back into the top four.

Monbulk 2 played away at Hampton Park in what was a top of the table clash.

Monbulk were well placed on all rinks in the first six ends, but then fell away to lose the overall by 38 shots, 55 to 93.

Eric Furby’s rink led by six shots after 12 ends. They then lost the next four ends to trail by two shots, but won three of the last five ends to go down by just one shot, 19 to 20.

Alan Hamilton’s rink led by three shots after seven ends, but then lost 12 of the next 14 ends to lose by eight shots, 14 to 22. Jim Anderson’s rink was only four shots behind after 12 ends, but then fell away to lose by 17 shots, 9 to 26. Graeme Goller’s rink was all square after 10 ends.

They then lost a number of multiples to lose by 12 shots, 13 to 25. This loss has pushed Monbulk 2 down to third place on the ladder with 5 matches to go until the finals.

Peter Koomen’s rink started slowly and were six shots down after five ends. They then won the next 10 ends including a number of multiples to lead by 17 shots after fifteen ends. They were able to maintain the lead and went on to win by 15 shots, 27 to 12.

Jim Bras’ rink dominated their game early and after eight ends led by nine shots. However, they lost seven shots in two ends to lead by two shots at the lunch break.

Monbulk 2 played Packenham at home and even though they won on two rinks they still went down. Alan Hamilton’s rink couldn’t find their line early and were 10 shots down after seven ends. They then won the next four ends to draw within one shot. By the eighteenth end

they led by one shot and won the last three ends to record victory by 5 shots, 25 to 20.

Eric Furby’s rink led by nine shots after 12 ends, but then lost the next three ends to be two shots in front with 6 ends to play. They then finished well to win five of the last six ends and won by eight shots, 26 to 18.

Graeme Goller’s rink was one shot in front after nine ends, but then lost the next eleven ends to go down by 19 shots, 9 to 28.

Monbulk 2 lost the overall by six shots, 60 to 66.

Monbulk 3 played Boronia away from home with Mike Harris’ rink having a close contest.

They led by seven shots after five ends when

they picked up six shots on the fourth end.

They then lost eight of the next 10 ends to be three shots adrift. However, they powered home winning five of the last six ends to win by three shots, 18 to 15.

Peter Lee’s rink was level pegging after seven ends. They then lost the next five ends to trail by eight shots and eventually lost by 10 shots, 14 to 24.

Bruce Cockerill’s rink was involved in a high scoring game and after twelve ends led by two shots. With two ends to play they were only three shots behind, but dropped 11 shots in the last two ends to lose by 14 shots, 23 to 37.

Monbulk 3 lost the overall by 21 shots, 55 to 76.

Concrete water tanks built correctly will last a lifetime. They keep your water cool, clean and algae free. This is because our tanks have 130mm walls and a 300mm base, and are poured with 40-mpa strength concrete not 25 or 30 mpa. We also use plasticiser to keep up the strength in the tanks instead of water. And after 28 days of curing the strength of the concrete will be between 48 and 52 mpa.
