By Jamie Salter A pair of Narre Warren locals are lighting up the night with their Christmas display on ’SANTAstic Street’, which took an entire week to set up.

Once Adam Crabb’s partner Joanne said, ’we’ll put up a few lights’, there was no going back.

“I took it to another level and over the past three years, it just got silly,“ Mr Crabb said.

During coronavirus lockdowns, Mr Crabb has been busy creating homemade Christmas cut-outs which can be spotted throughout the display.

“I buy the pattern and work from there, cutting and painting,“ he said.

“People like it and appreciate the effort.

“It’s there for everyone to come and take selfies and it’s a chance for the kids to get out and have some fun.“ Mr Crabb has added a touch of humour to his signs which have been placed throughout the front yard.

Social media and Christmas light competitions have helped spread the word about the display which is hidden away from the main road.

“Especially from this weekend - it will get quite busy,“ Mr Crabb said.

Rocking around the tree

By Shelby Brooks A tree with no gaps, a straight trunk and rounded shape are the characteristics to look for when picking out the perfect Christmas tree.

That’s according to the regulars who buy their trees at the Dandenong Christmas Tree Farm.

Tracy and Mirek have been bringing their children Mel and Toby to the farm for over 30 years, back when it was still located in Dandenong.

Now Mel and Toby bring their own families on one giant Christmas tree selecting annual outing.

They even sport matching Santa hats.

Dandenong Christmas Tree Farm owner Neil Cranston said sales had been up from previous years, with weekends the prime time for families to come.

“It’s like a switch. Everyone is busy,” he said.

“I think it’s been busy because of Covid and lockdown, people are looking for somewhere to go out. It’s not just about getting a tree, it’s about being outdoors and wandering around the farm.

“You can taste the atmosphere.”

Debbie’s Christmas Sharing in the joy of Christmas, Star News Group has handed out its ’The Great Christmas Giveaway Competition’ hamper worth $2650 to one lucky reader.

Debbie, from Cranbourne said she was “shocked” to win the prize last week.

“I’m feeling very lucky now,” she said.

By Gabriella Payne With the festive season once again upon us, locals have been sharing their Christmas ideas and recipes in the lead up to the big day - and this funny one caught our eye.

Longwarry residents had a good chuckle when this recipe popped up on the local Facebook noticeboard recently, and we thought we’d share it with you too - Merry Christmas!

(Shared by a Longwarry local, original writer unknown): It’s that time of year and since I’ve been unofficially crowned “Fruit Cake Queen“, here is my recipe.

sugar · 11 cup baking powder · 1 tsp. water · 1 cup salt · 1 tsp. · cup brown sugar

juice · lemon · 4nutslarge eggs · 1 bottle rum · 2 cups dried fruit ·

Method: 1. Sample a cup of rum to check quality.

2. Take a large bowl, check the rum again to be sure it is of the highest quality then repeat.

3. Turn on the electric mixer.

4. Beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl.

5. Add one teaspoon of sugar.

6. Beat again.

7. At this point, it is best to make sure the rum is still OK. 8. Try another cup just in case.

9. Turn off the mixerer thingy.

10. Break two eggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit.

11. Pick the fruit up off the floor, wash it and put it in the bowl a piece at a time trying to count it.

12. Mix on the turner.

13. If the fried druit getas stuck in the beaterers, just pry it loose with a drewscriver.

THE BEST XMAS CAKE RECIPE:

Sample the rum to test for tonsisticity.

Next, sift two cups of salt, or something.

Check the rum.

Now shift the lemon juice and strain your nuts.

Add one table.

Add a spoon of sugar, or somefink.

Whatever you can find.

Greash the oven.

Turn the cake tin 360 degrees and try not to fall over.

23. Don’t forget to beat off the turner.

24. Finally, throw the bowl through the window.

25. Finish the rum and wipe the counter with the cat.

Parking despair

By Jamie Salter Berwick Village businesses are petitioning for Casey City Council to change time limits in the Adams Lane car park after copping one too many parking fines.

There are a limited number of two hour

parking spots at Berwick Village, with staff having nowhere to park for an entire work day.

Zealous on High hair salon owner Anna Marcello recently received a parking fine and said two hours was not enough time for her customers to get their hair done.

“There’s about 20 all-day car spots for the

whole area,“ Ms Marcello said.

“It’s not good enough and I think we need to do something.“ Ms Marcello’s five staff members are forced to move their cars every two hours to avoid being fined.

“Everybody wants it sorted, it’s not fair on

us or the customers,“ Ms Marcello said.

“I’m new to Berwick and I have people coming from all over, and they’re being pushed away.

A Berwick man was arrested and charged with more than 160 offences during anti-hoon police raids.

160 hoon charges for 20yo A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged with more than 160 traffic offences after police anti-hoon raids in Berwick and Hallam.

Police seized a silver Holden Commodore sedan, a red-and-white Honda dirt bike, stolen number plates, a mobile phone and clothing during the Operation Achilles raids on Friday 3 December.

The raids were performed by police from the Dandenong Intentional High Risk Driving Unit and Springvale Divisional Response Unit.

A silver Holden Commodore allegedly performed burnouts close to a large mass of spectators at an illegal hoon gathering at Business Park and Commercial drives, Lynbrook on Tuesday 11 May, police said.

During an attempted intercept of the Commodore, police were blocked by spectators swarming the police vehicle.

At another hoon gathering on Thursday 8 July, a red and white Honda dirt bike allegedly caused significant damage to a Public Order Response Team police vehicle at Business Park Drive, Lynbrook.

Spectators blocked police from catching the alleged offender.

Since July, the anti-hoon Operation Achil-

les has netted 71 arrests and 103 impounded vehicles in greater Melbourne, and 35 police raids have ensued.

“It is hard to comprehend why people participate and incite such reckless behaviour and the community and police are rightly sick of it,” Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Russell Barrett said.

He warned hoons that put other road users at risk would be “before the courts and we will ask for jail time”.

“We have zero tolerance for any form of high-risk driving.

“Whether you are a participant, spectator or organiser, police will continue to use all available intelligence to identify you, arrest you and charge you.”

The arrested man from Berwick was charged with offences including evading police, reckless conduct endangering life, fraudulent use of number plates, speeding, driving while suspended and committing an indictable offence on bail.

He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 22 December.

High-tech domestic abusers disrupted

By Danielle Kutchel Family violence takes many forms, and a new project aims to identify and disrupt one of its more modern and insidious forms.

Homelessness and family violence support service Wayss has partnered with safety assessment provider Protective Group to create the Nicholson Project, which explores new ways of disrupting digital abuse.

A report into the pilot has just been released, and the results show just how needed the approach is.

Research suggests 99.3 per cent of family violence workers in Australia have clients who had experienced technology-facilitated stalking and abuse.

“It’s well-known in the sector that technology, social media and online means are used as a way to perpetrate abuse and exact coercive control over family violence survivor-victims,” explained Robyn Roberts, who oversaw the pilot as general manager of client services at Wayss.

“Wayss has increasingly heard from family violence victims referred to our service that they believed they are being tracked, stalked and controlled by their abuser using technology.

“Others referred to us were unaware this often-hidden form of abuse was happening to them and their children, leaving them vulnerable to further abuse.”

Early intervention against high-tech abuse is not always part of the immediate response from family violence services.

And, the ever-increasing sophistication of technology and the internet is often beyond the capacity of family violence workers.

“We needed a way to provide a skilled, targeted early intervention that assessed the digital vulnerability of family violence victims, removing the threat of technology-facilitated abuse and enabling their ongoing safety,” Ms Roberts said.

Typically, services like Protective Group will visit survivor-victims to conduct a physical assessment of their safety, including their online devices.

The aim of the Nicholson Project was to complete these assessments remotely.

This can reduce the amount of time needed to make vulnerable families as safe as possible.

After this remote assessment, if vulnerabilities are identified, Protective Group will conduct an in-person assessment.

The report into the project found interpreters and in-language information were important tools.

For the assessment, families need to charge all their devices and gather information about all accounts – from social media to financial.

The report also found that many survivorvictims don’t believe they are experiencing technology-facilitated abuse – highlighting that all survivor-victims should take the assessment, even if they don’t believe they are at risk.

Finally, the report noted that children and young people can become victims too, or be used as proxy abusers by the perpetrator, so their devices need to be included in the assessment.

Ms Roberts said the pilot had positive benefits for survivor-victims.

“We found that participants felt more confident that they were not being tracked and abused via technology as well as in their knowledge and ability to manage their use of technology and online platforms,” says Ms Roberts.

The pilot comes at a key time, with the south east continuing to record some of the highest rates of family violence in the state.

According to the latest crime statistics, the City of Casey recorded an 8.6 per cent increase in family incidents to the end of June 2021 – the third straight rise.

Greater Dandenong recorded a 0.3 per cent increase, and Cardinia 1.8 per cent.

Wayss and Protective Group are now focused on building their knowledge in the area and increasing the availability of the project.

“The ability to deliver the service remotely in the first instance provides huge potential to scale this up to make this kind of support available to more victims of family violence across Victoria and Australia,” Ms Roberts said.

IN BRIEF Driver charged over stolen Porsche An Endeavour Hills man has been charged after being caught allegedly driving a stolen Porsche.

Police say they located him in the Porsche 911 at a property on Princes Highway in Dandenong on Friday 3 December.

The sports car was allegedly stolen during an aggravated burglary in Malvern on 28 November.

The 40-year-old man was arrested at the scene by SD3 Divisional Response Unit members, with support from Southern Metro Regional Crime Team and Greater Dandenong CIU. He was charged with car theft and unlicensed driving.

He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 February.

Murder accused pleads not guilty An Endeavour Hills man has pleaded not guilty to the alleged murder of another man earlier this year.

Stephen Robinson, 56, appeared via video link from Port Phillip Prison at a committal mention hearing at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday 6 December.

According to the charge sheet, he is accused of murdering Adam Russell at Endeavour Hills on Sunday 15 August.

In the brief hearing, magistrate Tara Hartnett ordered Robinson to appear at a directions hearing at the Supreme Court of Victoria later this month.

Robinson did not seek bail.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

I’m Susan Davies, the Secretary of the Westernport Swamp Landcare Group and I live on a 50 acre farmlet in the swamp grasslands leading an idyllic life.

What are you currently reading?

The Pakenham Gazette, Call of the Reed Warbler by Charles Massy about regenerative agriculture, and Slater Field Guide to Australian Birds.

Are you from Kooweerup originally?

Not a Kooweerup old timer yet. As a kid in the ‘50s and ‘60s, I lived on a farm at Queenscliff, in the ‘70s in Melbourne as an office worker, the Dandenongs in the ‘80s, then the ‘90s in Nar Nar Goon North, and since 2000s in the Bayles/Monomeith area.

If you could invite six guests to a dinner party, who would you invite?

Dr Andrew Campbell of Landcare Australia, Rachel Berger comedienne, Charlie Bezzina detective, Greg Hunt Minister for Health, Arron Wood environmentalist, Professor Michael Buxton architect.

And what is your favourite thing about the local community?

Amazingly genuine people! And there are lots of great local annual events. I am a member of the KWR Swamp and Lang Lang Historical Societies, Westernport Biosphere, and HPNL. org.au In your opinion, where is the most beautiful spot in the Cardinia Shire?

The Lang Lang Primary School Arboretum at the top of town is a hidden three acres of magical nature reserve, full of native flora and fauna, where our Landcare group has just held three successful Bug Blitz Days for students, thanks to a Beach Energy grant. May I add, the best treasure is the Yallock Creek! It’s the most wonderful biolink full of birds and remnant swamp vegetation, where one may even spot an endangered bandicoot. Starting at Cora Lynn Outfall with its flood history, one can drive down to Murray Road Bridge with magnificent views to hills, then along lovely Dineen Road to Bandicoot Corner run by CEC, then to the Bayles Bridge and MW easements to reach the Bayles Fauna Park. Continue down to No 5 Drain Road Bridges to see more amazing natural assets. The Yallock then runs

What is your favourite native plant and why?

I need an A4 sheet please! I adore all the indigenous species of the great Kooweerup swamp, namely manna & swamp gums, cherry ballarts, swamp tea-trees, the wattles, hop goodenias, kangaroo apples, poas, reeds, sedges and ferns, because they are naturally suited to the growing conditions. How beautiful are the whispering phragmites along the waterways. How gorgeous are the golden wattles flowering along our roadsides and bridges. Prettiest of all is the clematis traipsing over trees in spring with prolific fluffy cream flowers.

How long have you been a part of the Westernport Swamp Landcare Group for and what do you like about being involved in the group?

I joined Landcare in 1997. I love the tremendous bunch of vital people caring for neighbours and our local land.

What is your favourite food?

Roast dinner, vegetables, salads, fruit, blackberry pie with custard and cream.

If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go and why?

No, nope, I love where I live!

What is something people don’t know about you?

People do not realise my main wish is for the world to treat all animals humanely, and secondly to protect wildlife habitat and ecosystems.

Save with bonus offer The Victorian Government is encouraging households doing it tough with energy bills to apply for the one-off $250 Power Saving Bonus payment, as the 12-month program marks more than 320,000 payments totalling more than $80 million.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale is encouraging all eligible households (who have not already applied for this rebate) to take advantage of the one-off $250 payment before the program ends on 31 January 2022.

“There are still many eligible households across the Cardinia and Bass Local Government Areas who have not yet applied for what could be crucial financial relief throughout the second year of Covid-19, including those receiving the Aged Pension,“ Ms Crugnale said.

“This one-off $250 payment helps reduce household bill pressure, so if you or anyone you know receives a pension, JobSeeker, Austudy, Abstudy or Youth Allowance, please check eligibility and apply - we are here to help with the application.“ Households can apply for the scheme by calling 1800 000 832 or visiting compare.energy.vic.gov.au.

To assist eligible households who may not have access to a computer or require assistance with their application, the government is providing support through the Power Saving Bonus Community Outreach Program.

Outreach Program partners include the Brotherhood of St. Laurence, Consumer Policy Research Centre, Good Shepherd and Neighbourhood House, Ethnic Communities Council of Victoria, Consumer Action Law Centre, and State Trustees Limited.

With electricity bills a top cost of living issue and about 20 per cent of Victorian households requesting financial assistance with bills in 2020, the program aims to reduce cost of living pressure with a $250 payment transferred electronically into bank accounts or provided via cheque on request, typically taking about two weeks to arrive.

The Power Saving Bonus, part of a $797 million household energy affordability package, is delivered through the government’s Victorian Energy Compare website, which sees more than one million visitors each year.

The website helps consumers find the best energy deal available, with data showing seven out of every 10 users save money by switching energy offers and a typical annual saving of $330.

Violence statistics dismay

By Marcus Uhe The 2020-21 financial year produced some of the highest figures for sexual offences and family incidents in Victoria in the last five years, according to data from the 2020-21 Victorian Family Violence Database.

A ‘family incident’ includes offences such as family violence, interfamilial-related sexual offences, and child abuse incidents attended by police, according to the Crime Statistics Agency.

The database included statistics on sexual assaults in Victoria for the first time, in response to the Victorian Government’s commitment to building an evidence base under the Family Violence Reform Rolling Action Plan.

Crime Statistics Agency chief statistician Fiona Dowsley noted the value of the publication of sexual assault data through the database.

“For the first time, this year’s database provides an in-depth look at sexual assault data in Victoria, including the overlaps between family violence and sexual assault,” Ms Dowsley said.

“Monitoring and publication of this data is important for increasing understanding so responses to both sexual assault and family violence can continue to be improved.”

Along with state-wide statistics, figures were also grouped by Local Government Areas with the City of Casey ranked sixth for recorded sexual assault offences in the last financial year with 488, and Greater Dandenong not far

up from 13,589 in 2019-20 to 15,062 in 2020-21.

Overall, the number of family incidents recorded by Victoria Police increased by 6 per cent from 82,205 in 2019-20 to 93,440 in 202021.

Larger increases were seen in the number of incidents recorded between former partners, up 8 per cent, and where the victim was the child of the alleged perpetrator, up 14 per cent.

Other significant state-wide numbers from the data included: 2021 had highest number of recorded sexual offences in the five-year period with 15062 cases, an increase of 8 per cent from 2020 with 13859.

The number of recorded family violence incidents by financial year has increased every year since 2018, peaking at 93,441 in 2020-21.

The number of sexual offences against children was up 44.1 per cent from 2272 in 2020 to 3274 in 2021.

Between 2017 and 2021, women were three times more likely to be victims of family violence than men, while men were three times more likely to be offenders.

There were just under 200 more recorded sexual offences by 25-34-year-olds (1053) in the 2020/2021 financial year than the next highest age group, which was 35-44 year olds with 859.

2021 saw the highest number of recorded sexual offences by men in the five-year period with 4036 recorded offences, up from 3521 in 2020.

Cardinia Shire Council was significantly lower at 154 offences, however, when compared to Casey for cases per 100,000 people, they ranked similarly at 130 compared to Casey’s 132.1.

Greater Dandenong was considerably higher on the cases per 100,000 figure at 262.2.

Casey was also in the top 10 LGAs for the number of emergency room presentations for sexual violence injuries between July 1 2016 and June 30 2021.

More sports fields needed as women play in Berwick

By Jamie Salter An increase in women participating in sport and an ever-growing population in Berwick means sporting clubs are struggling to find fields to schedule their games.

Berwick coaches are advocating for neighbouring land of Edwin Flack Reserve to be transformed into a second and third sporting oval to meet the increase in demand.

But the future of football and cricket in Berwick is in the hands of Victorian Government, who own the land desired for the expansion.

Member for Gembrook Brad Battin MP said sport needed to be included in the Victorian Government’s Cardinia Creek Regional Parklands Future Directions Plan, which is reimagining existing reserves in the area.

“There’s land available but we just need the government to say ‘yes, you can have the land’ and to get that, we need a masterplan,” Mr Battin said.

“We will work with the club to make sure it is in the masterplan and once it is in place, everything else will fall in line.

“The number of players of all ages just don’t fit on this oval.”

Berwick Football Club vice president Peter Hughes said a lack of facilities was deterring local women from getting involved in sport.

“Last year, we had to turn a women’s

team away because they had nowhere to play, and if we’re trying to encourage female sport that’s the last thing we want to do,“ Mr Hughes said.

“It’s really hard to have a sense of community when you have two grounds split apart and from a volunteer point of view, it’s two canteens, two groups of parents and twice as hard to run.”

The Berwick Junior Football Club has 23 teams and only one home ground.

President Carly Ravenhall has first-hand experience dropping off her children at multiple locations to play sport.

“Different age groups play at different grounds, so instead of having everyone at one ground, you’re travelling around for hours,” she said.

“Even for training, every other club uses their own space but we spend thousands on hiring grounds - it’s wasted money.”

Upcoming works change conditions

Traffic conditions on Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road are set to change.

As part of the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road Upgrade, ground and utility service investigations will continue throughout December so construction will be ready to start in early 2022.

The investigations will occur between Thompsons Road and South Gippsland Highway, and on Berwick-Cranbourne Road between Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Broad Oak Drive.

Short term lane and shoulder closures may occassionally be implemented as well as reduced speeds to keep workers and motorists safe.

Drivers have been asked to follow on-road signage and traffic controllers’ instructions, and allow extra time for journeys.

The works will occur on weekdays between 7am and 5pm, however, some works will need to be completed overnight to minimise disruption to the community.

These works will occur between 8pm and 5am.

Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road will become the straight through route when travelling north from South Gippsland Highway, aiming to reduce traffic on Cranbourne’s High Street.

Christmas is a time for giving, and one local school has gone the extra mile to ensure vulnerable community members don’t go without this festive season.

Hundreds of hampers will go to local families in need this Christmas thanks to generous donations from the Beaconhills College community to its ’Hope for Christmas Appeal’.

The College’s Berwick and Pakenham Campus families, including Friends of the Pakenham Campus Junior School and school staff all donated money and boxes full of grocery items and toys to this year’s appeal.

Scout leaders honoured Two women who have dedicated over half a century to Scouts in Cardinia Shire have finally been awarded their Medal of the Order of Australia.

Scouting stalwarts Margaret Turner and Lyn Stephenson were invested with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) earlier this year.

Last month, they were able to attend a ceremony held by Her Excellency the Governor of Victoria in the ballroom of Government House to receive their award.

Ms Turner and Ms Stephenson have already given 64 and 53 years service respectively in Scouting to support the youth in Cardinia Shire.

This was followed by the Governor hosting the first post Covid afternoon tea outside in the Fountain Courtyard supported by former Cardinia District Commissioner Olive Elston OAM and Bob Taylor AM, also a former DC and former Chief Commissioner of Scouts Victoria.

Olive has also been invested with the Silver Kangaroo, for Eminent Achievement and

Meritorious Service on Sunday at Gilwell Park Gembrook by the Chief Commissioner of Victoria for 35 years of service with Scouts.

Over her time in Scouting, Olive has held many roles including two separate stints as District Commissioner.

Olive agreed to take on the role of District Commissioner in 2016. She has created a culture of learning, enthusiasm, mentoring and most importantly having fun whilst enjoying the program.

In the background, Olive practiced what she preached and mentored many of her leadership team and challenged her team to grow Scouting.

Olive has mentored leaders who have now stepped up to take Cardinia to the next stage in their growth.

Hallam’s floods stay put

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Hallam businesses say they have been left repeatedly high and dry by lingering floodwaters across Centre Road and Rimfire Drive.

Most recently on Wednesday 17 November, both lanes of Centre Road were deeply submerged for three days due to overflow from the adjoining Hallam Valley flood plain.

Eclipse Security Systems owner Greg Flood said local enterprises were effectively stranded from customers and deliveries.

“Some of these small businesses have suffered really badly in the pandemic, and now they haven’t been able to get customers.”

About seven cars were drowned in floodwaters, trucks damaged and staff ferried by 4WD to get to work.

A row of stranded cars’ number plates were hung forlornly in a nearby tree during the calamity.

It’s been a case of rinse and repeat for the past dozen years, Mr Flood says - despite calls for either a levee or the raising of Centre Road.

In the meantime, housing and industrial development threatens to create more runoff.

Melbourne Water, which manages Hallam Valley floodplain, and City of Casey, which is responsible for Centre Road and its drains, have been in talks.

Melbourne Water south east waterways manager John Woodland said the “possibility” of raising the section of Centre Road was being discussed with Casey.

“We are currently investigating the design and construction of a new channel in the floodplain which will reduce the amount of time floodwaters remain on the road,” Mr Woodland said.

The water authority regularly inspects the floodplain drains, with contractors recently desilting an open channel and “jetting” the

Casey’s city presentation manager David Richardson said the council was advocating to Melbourne Water to improve the floodplain’s drainage system.

It also sought Melbourne Water to “investigate new approaches” to protect Centre Road, Mr Richardson said.

Unsurprisingly, the machine and its operator managed to catch alight.

Mr Gaul’s brothel, in the meantime, was inaccessible to staff and customers for three days.

Gun runner stung by cops

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Narre Warren South man has been jailed as part of an organised crime ring in drugs, guns and stolen luxury cars.

Malaki Salesui, 22, was the last of four offenders sentenced as part of an undercover police sting in Melbourne’s South East in 2019.

He pleaded guilty to handling an $180,000 stolen Mercedes Benz and a $26,000 stolen Audi, as well as being a prohibited person possessing a fully-automatic SKS assault rifle.

Victorian County Court sentencing judge Gerard Mullaly on 2 December noted the “particularly lethal” rifle, capable of firing 100 rounds a minute, was of “great concern”.

The stolen cars were also of seriously high value.

However, Salesui played a lesser role in the organised racket, which was busted by several covert police operatives as part of Operation Thrives.

A co-accused Jayden Schmidt arranged to sell the stolen Audi with the assault rifle in the car boot to a covert police operative for $18,000.

Salesui drove the stolen merchandise to Olive Street, Dandenong where the transaction was made.

In June 2019, Salesui arranged for the stolen Merc to be towed to a Pakenham address and later towed to Worrell Street, Dandenong to sell to a police operative.

At that rendezvous, two of his co-offenders were arrested by Special Operations Group police. Salesui later presented himself to Melbourne West police station.

Salesui’s youth – 19 years at the time – was a central factor for a more “merciful” sentence, the judge noted.

“The courts must persevere and endeavour, perhaps by carrot and stick, to move you towards … your rehabilitation.”

Raised in the South East suburbs, Salesui had struggled with alcohol and substance abuse.

His intellectual disability, “fragile” mental health and solid church and family relationships were also taken into account.

As were his early plea, long delay in sentencing and being remanded in adult jail in onerous pandemic conditions.

Salesui’s recently-approved NDIS support was “said to be the most sure way to … settle you when you’re back in the community”.

Co-offenders Schmidt, of Narre Warren,

Iqan Mehrdadian, of Trugannina, and Andrew Rohan, of Hampton Park, were sentenced in the County Court in May and June.

Schmidt and Rohan, who were also sentenced for serious separate offending, were jailed for up to three years and eight months and five years respectively.

Judge Mullaly said Salesui’s lesser role was most similar to Mehrdadian, who was jailed for 13 months with a two-year community corrections order.

However, Salesui warranted a different sentence due to his intellectual disability.

He was jailed for 10 months – of which he had already been served in 317 days of presentence detention.

Salesui was facing possibly further jail at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court hearing the next day, Judge Mullaly noted.

“The strategic intention for this precinct is to provide for a diverse mix of land uses, improve pedestrian connectivity and customer experience, and attract retail businesses for the long-term sustainability of the centre.

“Given this, across the site there are a range of one-hour, two-hour and all-day parking options and council continues to advocate and support the State Government in delivering improved public transport services to provide alternative options to travel across Casey, especially improved bus ser-

vices to activity centres.“ In 2019, council completed a parking occupancy survey in Berwick Village which showed the overall parking supply was near saturation during the lunchtime peak, with limited opportunities in the two-hour and all-day parking areas.

“Changing two-hour parking to unrestricted parking or three-hour parking would likely have a negative impact on customers, which in turn would affect local businesses,“ Ms Noesgaard said.

Christmas hopes on hold

By Shelby Brooks A South African family which has spent two years trying to immigrate to Australia remains in limbo, unsure if their visas will be granted in time to spend Christmas with relatives in Narre Warren South.

Claire and Eric Gillan began their journey to get to Australia in February 2020, submitting an expression of interest to South Australia to immigrate with their young daughter Marilyn.

They received their invitation to move at the end of June 2020 and paid for their visas in July of that year.

But they’re still waiting.

“As every day goes by, I lose a bit of hope and you get to a point where you wonder if you have made a big mistake,” Claire said.

Claire and Eric were accepted under the 491 Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa, which according to the Department of Home Affairs takes 16 months to process 90 per cent of applications.

“Yet here we are, nearly 18 months later, no news and no mention of when visas will be issued,” Claire said.

On 22 November 2021, the government announced 200,000 eligible visa holders would be allowed to enter Australia from 1 December, after almost two years of being locked out of the country.

Eligible people included fully vaccinated skilled migrants, international students, humanitarian, temporary, working holiday maker and provision family visa holidays.

But the Omicron variant of Covid-19 saw Australia’s borders snapped shut again before they even opened for people from South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi and Mozambique, with new border restrictions introduced from 28 November to 15 December.

The Gillans hoped they would be able to fly to Melbourne to celebrate Christmas with Claire’s cousins, the MacCauig family of Narre Warren South, before heading onto South Australia to settle.

Claire’s cousin Samantha MacCauig said she was heartbroken for them.

“My poor cousin has had her hopes dashed time after time,” she said.

“When she called me a month ago with the good news that they’ll be here for Christmas, we were all jumping for joy but, not a day later, heard the devastating news that flights leaving South Africa have been suspended once again.

“I have tried to keep her spirits up, however, I’m not sure what to say with all this uncertainty around Covid.

“I do know that time is ticking and they are financially exhausting their savings. As a South African I am so aware of their desperation to get to Australia and make a new life for themselves. I really don’t know how to help them.”

Claire decided to move to Australia to start a better life for her family.

“South Africa is a wonderful place, but as the poverty and unemployment grows, is becomes more and more expensive to live day to day,“ she said.

“You work long days and long hours and yet it’s hard to make a living as a middle class person. There is no work life balance at all.

“That is my main reason for wanting to move to Australia- work life balance. And of course the outdoor lifestyle!”

Claire and Eric sold everything they owned when their invitation to South Australia arrived in July last year.

They are currently staying in a friend’s furnished apartment, ready to leave at a moment’s notice.

“We have sold everything, cashed in all our investments to go through with this and it feels like we just threw our money away,” Claire said.

“We are so blessed to have this place to live in, I’m so grateful, it gives a bit of stability in this time of not knowing. But nothing here is mine, not a spoon, not a plate, even the pillows we sleep on. It works on a person.”

Claire and her family are trying to stay positive, though it’s taking a toll on their mental health.

“My daughter and I cry quite often together because even at eight years old, she too is feeling like our dream is over before it even began,” Claire said.

“All this time we try and keep the dream alive but the more we remind ourselves of that dream, the more hopeless I feel. Hanging in limbo is the worst of all of this.“

The New York-themed barbershop took out top prizes for the best barbershop design category, as well as winning the award for best barber business overall - a fantastic achievement that owner Mario Fallace said he was incredibly proud of.

Mario said “a lot of hard work“ had gone into the business since it was opened in 2014, and he thanked the community for all their support, particularly throughout the tough times in the past couple of years.

“To be recognised with these awards makes everyone feel good, especially in a time like this, where businesses are down and out,“ he said.

“So to receive good news like this, it’s very heartwarming.“

Rex name shame

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

“I want to get back into serving the community again. I want to run again and I want to get my name back on the honour board for the right reasons. At the moment it’s a dishonour board,” he said.

Star News understands Mr Flannery has put forward his request to be heard by the administrators at the next council meeting, slated for Tuesday 2 February.“It’s up to them now but a year later, this is still eating at me. I need closure and this is one way that I can get it,“ he said.

“I played no part in any downturn or sacking of the council and I feel it’s my duty to say that I don’t want to be a part of or in any way

“Most blokes could do it in four or five seconds but he took 32. It was great motivation.”

Trainer Brett Andreasen has been involved with the program for four years and created a series of workout routines on Youtube so participants could continue to exercise and keep their fitness up during lockdowns.

He told Star News encouraging movement was the key for this age demographic.

“Generally as you get older, a couple of things happen; you don’t lift your feet as much when you walk, and your grip strength goes,” Andreasen said.

“Holding the weights, doing some of these exercises, we work on those aspects, as well as agility and balance. All those things that start to deteriorate when you get older, we’re focusing on that.

“We do a bit of cardio, a bit of strength. It gives them an all-round fitness base.”

Established in 2012, the shed currently has 160 members and offers a range of programs including woodwork, welding, fishing, caravanning groups and more.

Men give back via Shed There are a number of families who are desperate for help this Christmas as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Akoonah Park Men’s Shed members are sparing a thought for those who are on the streets by gathering clothing and food on behalf of the Berwick Opportunity Shop and the Narre Warren Opportunity Shop.

The opportunity shops are accepting unwanted blankets, jumpers and tinned food from the Shed’s 160 members.

The Akoonah Park Mens Shed in Berwick received a much needed boost from Berwick Nissan on Friday with the donation of a $3000 cheque.

The money will subsidise the shed’s fitness and flexibility program, held on Friday mornings with qualified fitness instructors from YMCA. The cheque presentation took place during one of the fitness sessions and was kept as a surprise from the majority of participants until the handover.

Berwick Nissan’s Mark Wright said his business had been supporting the fitness program for two years now, with a portion from each sale going towards their community fundraising program.

He said he was proud to support a local program that encouraged connectivity and friendship. “$20 or $25 comes out of our bottom line that we put aside, and we pick a charitable organisation every six months and donate some money,” Wright said.

“I think it’s very important that you maintain connection not only with the community but with the older people in the community.

“Older people get forgotten about a bit. Let’s keep remembering them and support them.”

The Fitness and Flexibility program finished second in the 2020 Community Exercise Program Award.

Not only does it get the members moving but it provides a bonding experience that was taken away due to Covid lockdowns.

It’s the brainchild of Ernie Bird, welfare and wellbeing leader at Akoonah Park.

The program started in July 2018 and provides basic fitness classes for 25-to-30 participants per class.

“In that (first) six months we did 440 member hours of fitness, with an average of 22 people,” Bird said. “In the next 12 months we did over 1500 hours of fitness with an average of 25 members per class.”

He said the use of professional trainers allows for a custom workout plan for members his age, with the average participant around 72 years old.

“They’re professional, and they know what exercises will benefit us for our situation.

“We had one guy who was 90 and he arrived with a walking stick. We had a situation where

Mum’s gift saved Jake Six-year-old Jake Shiels had only two days left on life support when his mum gave him an incredible life-saving gift.

The Cranbourne North boy was battling a mystery virus that had caused his liver to fail and he needed a transplant to have any chance of surviving.

Time was running out to find a donor when his mum, Claire DeStratis, discovered she was compatible but donating part of her liver meant risking her own life.

“The surgeons said ‘look, one in four you’re going to have a major complication and one in 200 don’t survive the surgery’,” the mum of three said.

Burbank sells future Clyde town centre Burbank Group’s National Pacific Properties (NPP) has successfully sold land to be developed into the new Clyde town centre.

The site is next to the future Clyde Train Station and adjoins NPP’s Eliston Project and nearby NPP’s projects Hartleigh and Bella.

The Clyde sale follows a major deal by NPP to purchase more than 28 hectares of land for 500 homes in the new Melbourne suburb of Pakenham East.

NPP general manager Tom Trevaskis said NPP was focused on ramping up their real estate development business to take advantage of strong demand for land and affordable homes in the area.

“This successful deal reflects the strength of sales being experienced in the Clyde, Cranbourne, Berwick region,’’ he said.

Mr Trevaskis said the recent Pakenham East purchase was aligned with the NPP growth strategy to acquire new sites in greenfield lo-

cations in Melbourne.

Diplomat stops by college

By Gabriella Payne As we move away from lockdowns and look towards the future, it’s imperative to build strong relationships with our neighbouring countries - and that’s something the Indonesian language students at Berwick College are already making strides towards.

On Monday 6 December, the passionate language students and their teachers were visited by a very special guest from Canberra, Mr Ridwaan Jadwat, a diplomat from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

Mr Jadwat, the First Assistant Secretary of the Southeast Asia Division and former Australian ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain and Yemen, stopped by the college on Monday afternoon to hear about their extensive Indonesian language program and BRIDGE partnership with an Indonesian school.

The BRIDGE program at Berwick College was set up in 2017 (with help from the Asia Education Foundation) and saw the school partner with SMA Lokon St Nikolaus, a senior Catholic boarding school located in Tomohon, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Since its inception, the program has been incredibly successful and through interacting with one another (both virtually and in person on a few trips pre-Covid), students in both countries thrived, seeing first-hand the benefits of strong international relations.

Mr Jadwat congratulated the students and staff on Monday afternoon for their fantastic efforts in connecting their local Australian community to Indonesia, and said he was excited to meet the new generation of diplomats.

“To see the work that you are all doing here, this is the bread and butter of what we are trying to achieve in Canberra,” Mr Jadwat said.

“This is the front line of it and seeing kids like yourselves doing this is heartwarming, be-

“So in a way, you’re also diplomats, you’re also ambassadors for our country and this is heartwarming for all of us in Canberra to get

out of our bubble and get into the real world to see how the average Australian kid is making links with the people on the other side in Indonesia.

“And that is a good thing, because it also breaks down barriers, it helps to build a better understanding of each other and our cultures and to strip away the stereotypes on both sides - so it’s really, really important work.

“So I want to congratulate the school and all of you students and your teachers for all the work that you’re doing,” he said.

Berwick College principal Kerri Bolch thanked Mr Jadwat and his colleagues for stopping by to visit and inspire them. She said that the success of the BRIDGE partnership was all thanks to the hard work and passion of the school’s language teachers.

“Our teaching team are just so passionate about, not just their teaching, but the whole cultural side as well, so it’s a real credit to them and the work that they’ve done with the connections that have been made,” Ms Bolch said.

“They’ve done a great job.”

Children learn about level crossing removal works Berwick Building Blocks, run by the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), is a community initiative informing children about the removal of the Clyde Road level crossing.

LXRP is calling on Berwick’s future engineers, designers and construction workers to get involved in free, daily interactive sessions where children aged three to seven can learn what construction techniques go into LXRP projects.

Children can dress up as an engineer in personal protective equipment as they explore, play, build and use large scale building blocks to create their own rail bridge and road underpass, replicating the Clyde Road underpass currently under construction.

Level Crossing Removal Program director Andrew Pepplinkhouse said the Clyde Road level crossing would be gone for good this summer, boosting safety and easing congestion for the community.

“The Level Crossing Removal Project delivers a transformative program of work for generations to come, and it’s great to give younger people the opportunity to find out how we’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Clyde Road,“ Mr Pepplinkhouse said.

Major works are underway and the level crossing will be gone in 2022.

Using proper language

By Elle Cecil As our society progresses into a more inclusive and welcoming environment, it is important that we make a conscious effort to ensure the language we use towards others is appropriate. Rather than relating to concepts such as profanities, this is in reference to the way we address or describe people with disabilities.

Like fashion crazes, music styles and interior design trends, language tends to change and update with time. New words and phrases are introduced into our vocabularies to reflect the times we live in.

Terms like ‘handicapped,’ ‘physically challenged’ and ‘wheelchair-bound’ are heading away from being the accepted way to refer to people who have a disability, while the use of phrases like ‘suffering from’ or ‘afflicted with’ are generally deemed offensive in today’s language.

Avoid the use of words and phrases such as crippled, a victim of, unfortunate, suffering from, incapacitated or worse, words that have evolved from historically medical terms to become hurtful slurs. Using the word ‘normal’ is also, depending on context, one that should generally be avoided when referring to people with a disability.

Using proper terminology is empowering, while outdated terminology is hurtful and offensive.

Instead of defining someone by an impairment or disability they may have, try to first recognise that they are a person above all else. They are not disabled, they have a

disability - in the same way that someone is not brown hair, but rather they have brown hair.

Instead of saying ‘a blind person’ or ‘a quadriplegic’, perhaps consider rephrasing to ‘a person who is blind or has a vision impairment, or ‘a person that has quadriplegia.’ Similarly, this concept also applies to medical conditions such as asthma and cancer - instead of ‘she suffers from asthma,’ instead use ‘she has asthma.’ Rather than ‘a cancer patient,’ use ‘a person with cancer.’

It is in this way that we are not defining someone by any disability that they may have, but rather recognising that it is simply a feature of who they are.

One of the best ways to address or refer to people with a disability is to start with ‘a person,’ as you are affirming their humanity first and foremost. You can then go on to say ‘...that uses a wheelchair,’ ‘...with a hearing impairment,’ or whatever their disability may be.

Language and terminology will continually evolve, as do all other aspects of our society, and is something that we all have a duty to remain aware of. It is important to take note of the terms that the person with the disability uses to describe or refer to themselves, and then use those terms accordingly. It all comes down to each person’s own preference and we should respect everyone’s preferred way of self-identification.

Inclusive playground fun

By Jamie Salter An inclusive play space has opened in Berwick and is set to be a thriving community hub for years to come.

Opening just in time for the summer holidays, Hilltop Park’s fantasy themed playground has an array of accessible features for children of all ages and abilities to enjoy, including a quiet space complete with teepees, all-access walkways and shaded, accessible swings.

The play space was designed by Stockland Minta in collaboration with Variety Children’s Charity and Urban Edge.

Representatives from each organisation attended the ribbon cutting on Thursday 2 December to officially open the park.

Stockland Minta senior development manager Sommer Thompson said the project had been in the works for a long time.

“We commenced the project a few years ago now and we wanted to deliver it to the residents as soon as possible,“ Ms Thompson said.

“We were able to deliver the first phase as soon as residents moved in and now we’re opening the entire park to the public.“ Stockland Minta will feature 1700 lots with an expected 2000 families moving in to the community - a total of about 6000 people.

“We hope local residents and the external public will use it. The way we’ve designed it gives the best outcome to residents,“ Ms Thompson said.

About $3.54 million went into building the park which championed local trades throughout its development.

Variety head of inclusive play Kim Becherand said Stockland were “visionary leaders in inclusion“.

“A play space takes such a long time to build and it takes a real team to put it together,“ Ms Becherand said.

“An inclusive play space is somewhere where children and families can come to feel safe, comfortable and break down barriers about what it is to live with a disability.

“From our first vision, we knew this would be the perfect place for it.“ Indigenous artist Robert Michael Young of the Gunnai-Waradgurie tribe was approached

by Urban Edge to paint the footpath in the park.

“This park is on contested land of the Bunurong Wurundjeri, so I wanted something to acknowledge their creative spirit and something fun for kids to discover,“ Mr Young said.

“I wanted something to represent new creation, and the importance of connection to country.

“When I was painting, I had people say they love the look of it and the creativity of using a footpath for the artwork.“ The play space is located at Stockland Minta, on the corner of Soho Boulevard and Carnival Road, Berwick.

The City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council have made a joint decision to change the service model of their libraries, which will see the subsequent dissolution of CCL at the end of 2022. By David Nagel Champion jockey Jamie Kah has returned to the winner’s enclosure for the first time in more than three months after a brilliant victory aboard the Cranbourne-trained Smokin’ Romans in the Listed $300,000 Pakenham Cup (2500m).

Kah had a smile from ear-to-ear after giving the five-year-old gelding - trained by now Cranbourne-based trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace - a dream run in the cup, run in front of an enthusiastic crowd for the first time since 2019.

Smokin’ Romans was never threatened in the straight, holding off the local challenge of the Phillip Stokes-trained Good Idea to win by two lengths on the line, with the Matt Cumanitrained Team Captain two lengths further back in third.

Kah was ecstatic after riding her first winner since piloting the Peter Moody-trained Invincible Caviar to victory at Sale on August 22.

Kah has recently returned to the track after being suspended for attending an illegal gathering during Victoria’s Covid-19 lockdown.

“It’s amazing, I’ve missed it greatly, I love the horses and that’s why I do it, and to come back on a day like today, with the crowds here, and get a win like that it’s very rewarding,” Kah said after the race.

“I’m just really happy to be back.”

Smokin’ Romans has had an incredible campaign, with his Pakenham Cup win his 14th start in 2021, with nothing more than a five-week freshen up between runs.

“They’re amazing horses, and this horse is just the same, it makes you really give credit to Dave (Eustace) and Ciaron (Maher), they have had this horse up for so long and I’ve never seen him look this good,” Kah said.

“I knew I had a fit horse underneath me, so if I needed to go if I got challenged, I could, but I wanted to give him the easiest ride I could early.

Kah said she felt like she had the race in her keeping a long way from home.

“He’s a really lovely stayer, he’s push-button out there, they put the blinkers on, just a little bit of a gear change, and he was really keen on the turn,” Kah said.

“I had to let him go because I had so much horse underneath me. He’s come through his grades perfectly and well done to the team and the owners, it was a great win for them today.”

Eustace - now Cranbourne based - was equally impressed with one of his stable favourites.

“He is an absolute legend, he’s been in work over a year and he just keeps turning up, he loves his racing and he’s just getting better and better,” Eustace said.

“He’s a funny horse, he’s always had his quirks, but he was really good today and probably the best he’s been. He’s just growing up, he’s just a popular winner and a real favourite at the stable.”

Eustace said Smokin’ Romans was thoroughly deserving of victory after a close-up second in the Group-3 Bendigo Cup.

“He was a little bit stiff in the Bendigo Cup, we just put the blinkers on today and he got in a lovely spot,” he said.

“Jamie did what she does, she rode him as he jumped, and he jumped well, and she just let him stride and got him in a beautiful rhythm and it’s great to have her back…she’s a star of the sport and she showed why today.

She’s just a very naturally gifted rider, it’s a rare thing, she’s got it, the horses run for her and that horse stretched very well for her today.

She took the initiative, it wasn’t necessarily the plan to be so forward, but he jumped well and she went on with it.

Chasemore – and his Bears – were smothering with the ball, restricting the visiting side to just 101.

The medium pacer finished with the sensational figures of seven overs, five maidens, 3/5, while tearaway quick Andrew Perrin was also relentless with the ball, claiming 4/19.

The Bears made light work of the run chase, storming home with ten wickets in hand in just 15.3 overs.

Gloveman Jordan Cleland pushed around 49 off 48 balls, while Lachlan Brown scorched 53 from 46.

After suffering a defeat to Hallam Kalora Park in the grand final rematch last week, the win comes as the Bears first of the season.

Bears skipper James Wilcock believes his side has got off the ground for season 2021/22, while also praising the depth of his bowling unit.

“Obviously in the grand final rematch in the first round, we were up and about, hoping to get one up on them,” he said.

“It was a close game, we couldn’t quite get over the line, but on the weekend – on our home deck, in front of our fans, to get that win, we feel like we have got our season going now.

“It’s pretty handy, there’s a few we can throw the ball to when someone has a niggle… on the weekend, we said to Cheeks (Matt Chasemore) ‘we might need a few overs from you this year’.

“We throw the ball to him and he bowls seven straight and gets 3/5, it is a good luxury for a captain to have.”

The Southside Flyers lifted-off in the season opener on Saturday night, crushing the Bendigo Spirit.

The Spirit – a side that was unable to win a game last summer – showed good intent, pushing the Flyers at times in the home sides’ 94-81 victory.

It was a second period onslaught that defined that match, with the Flyers outscoring the Spirit 25-11 in the second.

Flyers superstars Rebecca Cole (24 points, four assists) and Sara Blicavs (27 points, 11 rebounds) were once again prominent figures on the court, especially in the second period, where Blicavs scored majority of her points, both inside the paint and from deep.

Abby Bishop (20 points, four assists and 11 rebounds) was also impressive with a doubledouble.

Casey-South Melbourne was dismantled at Mervyn Hughes Oval on Saturday, with the Swans thumped to the tune of 10 wickets by a fired-up Footscray.

The bitterly disappointing Swans would want to quickly erase this one from their memory in the tough outing in the West.

Batting first, Michael Wallace’s group struggled from the outset, losing three early wickets before desperately scrambling to salvage something of the innings in the wake of some unbelievably disciplined bowling by the well-drilled Doggies.

One bright spark was talented teenager Harrish Kannan, who scored 59 from 89 balls to help the Swans to 193 from 49.3 overs, with Chris Bendek (27) and Luke Shelton (31) also contributing strongly late to at least give the bowlers something to work with.

Kannan – who scored 77 in the opening round – has been a revelation through the middle order for the Swans so far this season, and one to keep an eye on.

But there was very little to smile about from there on in with Doggies openers Dylan Brasher and Daniel Sartori absolutely putting the Swans to the sword.

In 37 overs of dominant white-ball batting, the duo raced down the total without the loss of wicket, with Brasher crunching 101 not out and Sartori 88 not out, with the left-handed Brasher playing some outrageous shots off the quicks.

The talented youngster was particularly brutal off some short bowling, with a flick shot off quickie Nathan Lambden for six needed to be seen to be believed.

Will Carr’s side will need to bounce back quickly when they travel to Shepley Oval on Saturday to face their great rivals, Dandenong, in a blockbuster clash for the sides who both boast 1-2 records.

In the pre-season, the Swans managed to defeat the Panthers in a practice match so will be confident of a swift bounce back.

Wickers shine under lights BERWICK BOWLS After four rounds our eight sides are all performing well and have put themselves in good positions leading up to the Christmas break.

Side 1 - def Pakenham away In what was our first Friday night game in a few years we travelled to arch rivals Pakenham who pulled out all stops to set this one up as a win.

GameFace Media, normally popular for their community football and cricket coverage, was on hand to livestream the game. There was a great crowd and the Berwick members showed up in good numbers to support the ones.

Josh McQueen’s rink set the night up for Berwick with a big win. The TV rink was an amazing game of bowls with both skips changing the head with every bowl but Max Mannix for Pakky was the difference.

Rich’s rink got off to flyer only to lose nine ends straight and the deficit of eight was eaten up quickly and they managed a draw on the last end. Ellard’s rink started slow again but as we’ve seen this season came home strong to get a great win. All in all an awesome win for our top side who stay undefeated and on top of the ladder.

Side 2 - def Ferntree Gully 1 The twos have had an up and down start, but with a few changes to the side on the weekend and on our home turf the second side came away with a big win set up by Tony French’s rink who had a 19 shot win. Some great bowls were played and the support was good to see for our 2nds who continues to put the pressure on early and run away with it. They now sit just inside the four and need to consolidate this win against Narre Warren 1 away next week.

Side 3 - def Cardinia Waters 1 Another great win from the threes away against the strong Cardinia Waters. Three rinks winning and taking 16 points away is just what they needed to do and go in to this week’s game against Narre Warren 2 at home. Currently sec-

Berwick came out on top in an entertaining contest against Pakenham on Friday night. ond on the ladder with a good percentage the threes have a real chance to consolidate their top-two spot going into Christmas.

Side 4 - def by Parkdale 2 It was a tough day out for the fours against Parkdale second side. They weren’t disgraced though and all rinks performed very well against a strong side. They’re still every chance to jump into the four in the next two weeks and come up against Mordialloc and Mulgrave and they are both very winnable opportunities.

Side 5 - def by Upwey-Tacoma 2 Another tough day out for the fifths and still without a win the team is in real need of a win.

ing up against Burden Park and Mulgrave are coming up and two good chances to get wins on the board. If the fifths can win them both they’ll push much closer to the top-four before the break.

Side 6 def Edithvale 3 They’re flying at the moment!!! A massive 44 shot win and taking 15points, the sxiths sit second on the ladder with the best shot difference of all sides. Big wins to Pat Steere and Helen Watson’s rinks set up the day, Vaughn Smith’s rink getting the draw and Dennis Fry stepping up and doing his bit this weekend filling in and only going down by two which is a great result for everyone. The sixths should win their next two against Hampton RSL 3 and Dandy Club 6 and that will see them well and truly in the top two.

Their first loss of the season and it was only the one rink that came up against a strong rink from Moorabbin. Still sitting second though and games against Noble Park 4 and Carrum 2 should see them sit comfortably in a good position at the break.

Side 8 - def Beaumaris 5 An awesome result for the eighths away at Beaumaris. Only losing one rink and now sitting second on the ladder we are showing that the clubs depth is fantastic this year and with changes every week our sides are all performing very well early on. Games against Moorabbin and Murrumbeena are crucial to where the eighths will be positioned at the break.

Injury to Incentivise leaves star gelding out for autumn

By David Nagel He was one of the stars of the spring racing carnival but the immediate future of Caulfield Cup winner Incentivise is in serious doubt after scans revealed damage to his front suspensory ligaments.

Trained by Peter Moody at Pakenham, Incentivise is currently spelling in Queensland under the watchful eye of his breeder, partowner, and former trainer Steve Tregea.

Incentivise pulled up lame after running a gallant second to Verry Elleegant in this year’s Melbourne Cup, but was cleared of any longterm injuries and appeared destined for a bright future.

But recent scans in Queensland have revealed the significance of the suspensory ligament damage and further stress on the cannon bone.

Incentivise will have further scans in February before a decision is made on his future racing career.

Incentivise was one of the revelations of Australian racing in 2021, progressing from a maiden victory in country Queensland to win three Group 1’s in Melbourne …including the Caulfield Cup. Incentivise gave Moody - the former trainer of champion mare Black Caviar – his first win in one of the grand slam races of the Australian turf…the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Golden Slipper.

Incentivise is the early favourite for the first three of those races in 2022.
