Ranges Christmas appeal

By Parker McKenzie A Belgrave based charity is running its annual Christmas Appeal and is seeking donations for those suffering from hardship over the festive season.

Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service (DRERS) chief executive officer Tania Bevan said the best donations are non-perishable food items and toys for children.

“For example Christmas cakes, mince tarts, puddings, water crackers, savory and sweet biscuits and other festive treats,” she said.

“The best gifts for the younger children are toys such as building blocks, and games. For older children sporting goods such as bats and balls, and for the teenagers, gift vouchers are the best.”

Presents can be dropped off below the Christmas at the Belgrave Library, or the DRERS office at the Belgrave Community Hub. Mrs Bevans said the amount of families assisted by the appeal varies each year.

“In recent years it’s been around 60 to 70 families which equates to hundreds of local kids,” she said.

“We also assist individuals both with and without kids by providing a Christmas food hamper, which as you could imagine would be greatly appreciated by someone living on welfare looking for work.”

DRERS is a non-for-profit organisation supporting people experiencing financial stress, crisis and hardship in the Dandenong Ranges.

Mrs Bevans said the charity is aiming to put together 140 Christmas hampers to show those in need the community wants them enjoy the holidays too.

“These toys and hampers bring cheer to families and people who are often facing challenging life experiences, and to provide some joy at this time goes a long way.”

The charity was founded in 1998 and of-

fers food, clothing and financial assistance to those in need.

Mrs Bevans said the community can contribute to DRERS through food donations and financial assistance beyond Christmas.

“We need donations of food all year round, not just at Christmas,” she said.

“Help with food is the most requested as-

sistance. Next is assistance with fuel and bills such as electricity or gas, rent and chemist prescriptions.”

The office is located at the lower level of the Belgrave Community Hub for people looking for social interaction, lunch or a cup of coffee, or donations can be left at the Belgrave Library on Reynolds Lane, Belgrave.

Reversing the calendar

By Mikayla van Loon Advent calendars are common in many households over Christmas, counting down the days with a small chocolate or gift but Tecoma Uniting Church is asking people to reverse that tradition.

After a successful first year last year hospitality coordinator Sue Brown said the Reverse Advent Calendar donation drive is a great way to get the whole family thinking about giving this Christmas.

“When you’re physically putting something in a box, and you know that it’s going to benefit someone, it’s a great small practical way that you can help people and teach kids that other people don’t always have as much as they do,” she said.

Each day in the lead up to Christmas, Ms Brown said people can place an item in a box under the tree at the church or at home.

“Anything from non-perishable goods, it can be rice, pasta, flour, all your basics that would help someone but it’s nice to include a little bit of Christmas like a box of chocolates that someone’s not going to have the money to buy. So anything like that would be really really appreciated.”

Although donated boxes will mostly be handed out for Christmas Day, Ms Brown said the leftovers will be kept for that early January period when they usually get inundated with requests for help.

Lots of local businesses have also jumped on board to support the advent calendar, like Ranges First Nationals Real Estate who are sponsoring the donation drive.

Fundraiser for Scouts

1st Selby Scout Group are selling Christmas Trees for another year, making it 15 years since they first started in 2006.

Trees can be pre-ordered and picked up on the day or people can choose and pay on when they are there.

Ms Vautier said the Cub Scouts are excited about selling trees this year and have been preparing signs for the fundraiser over the last few weeks.

Selby’s Scouts will be offering contactless delivery on 4, 11 and 18 December to suburbs across the Dandenong Ranges.

Belgrave local traders are coming together for a special dog themed Christmas event for people to pamper their pawed friends.

The event will run from 12pm until 4pm on Saturday 11 December and features a number of activites for people to enjoy with their dogs.

Owner of Babajis Kitchen Billie Crombie said the event has plenty of fun activities for animal lovers to pamper their pets with.

“We are going to be having a Christmas event with a roaming Santa, a dog grotto and an area to take a Christmas portrait with your furry friend,” “we are trying to get people down to enjoy Belgrave and the local community.”

The event is organised by the Belgrave Traders Association and is aimed at boosting local business in the area leading into Christmas in what has been a difficult year for local businesses.

Mrs Crombie said she is excited about the event and plans for future events in the area too.

“We did run a dog festival last year; we run pretty good events in Belgrave like Halloween and the like which has been a challenge this year,” she said.

“There are plenty of cafes, restaurants and bookshops to see while you are here too.

For local Scout groups Christmas is an important time of year for their fundraising efforts.

The first Selby Scout Group will be returning to the Hills to sell Christmas trees in what will be over 10 years of doing so.

“It’s our main fundraiser, so it just helps with the running cost of all the activities for all of our youth members,” Selby Scouts secretary Charlie Damon said.

“It’s one of the most fun jobs because you’re delivering Christmas cheer, so it’s one of the most joyful fundraising activities that we engage in.”

Over the last two years, Belgrave South’s Scouts have been hugely impacted by the pandemic and haven’t been able to fundraise in their normal ways.

After dipping their toe in the business of Christmas tree sales in 2019, Rachael Vautier said the scout group decided to jump right into it this year.

“I just took on the fundraising in 2019 and Christmas trees were not something I’d done before. I’ve done lots of fundraising for kindergartens and other organisations, so I guess it wasn’t something on my radar but other Scout groups do it,” she said.

“Our group leader suggested it and we’re very much doing it because we haven’t been able to fundraise much for the last two years.”

Cafe’s free festive feast Crunchy Nut Cafe in Monbulk is having a free Christmas lunch for those doing it tough on Christmas Day. Lunch will be available between 10am and 12pm on Christmas day to enjoy at the park across the road.

The cafe is providing a free lunch, cold drinks and something sweet to takeaway for anyone in need.

Crunchy Nut owner Alaina Williams said the community Christmas lunch was a great opportunity for her to give back to the community.

“It’s been a tricky year because of Covid for so many people,” she said.

“It’s for anyone feeling lonely, or having any personal issues can come for a free food.”

The idea was born when one of Mrs William’s employees at the Crunchy Nut cafe suggested hosting a free Christmas Day lunch.

“She suggests doing something like this and we came up with the idea,” Mrs Williams said.

“I’m really looking forward to it and we’ve had such great feedback from so many people.”

Emily Jones said she suggested the idea because of how fortunate she has been to enjoy Christmas with her family.

“I’ve been lucky that my family has been able to eat well on Christmas, I’ve been lucky to be able to spend my Christmas mornings with them as well,” “If we can maybe lessen the stress for people over Christmas time, you don’t really have to be homeless, you can just be doing it tough because of restrictions and lockdowns,” she said.

The cafe is also seeking donations for those who are in need over the Christmas period to distribute to people who attend on Christmas day.

Community Bank delivers So 2021 has again been a year like no other.

While Covid created many challenges this year, it also highlighted the amazing resilience and capacity we have as a community to support each other in times of need. With Christmas a few short weeks away, we are all feeling positive and hopeful for an enjoyable 2022.

Over the past year, the remaining banks who were in town closed their doors permanently, however, as an essential service, Community Bank Monbulk & District has remained committed to our community. We’re open and we’re here for you.

We believe it is so important to be here for the people of Monbulk & District. We have seen firsthand the difficulties faced by the people of our community during the pandemic and most recently with the severe storms that hit our area at the beginning of June 2021.

We were privileged to work with community groups such as Monbulk Emergency Management Group, Monbulk RSL, Rotary Club of Monbulk & District and Monbulk Open Door Church to provide support and assistance to our town through this difficult event.

Our staff have been fantastic, looking after our customers and community groups to ensure they have been helped through this continuing financially challenging time. We have remained focused on helping locals achieve their financial goals with our good old fashioned face to face service, albeit behind a mask, over the phone, or via Zoom.

This year Community Bank Monbulk & District has remained focused on supporting our local clubs, groups and schools with our sponsorship and grants program. We are thrilled to have reached over $600,000 in community contributions since we opened in 2012.

Kiki + Finch is a small boutique in Emerald that offers bespoke clothing, shoes and accessories for women, as well as a beautiful collection of indoor plants and locally-made giftware.

Owner Olivia McAlpine had always wanted to open a shop, but after her children were born, it wasn’t something she expected to be able to do.

“After having three babies in less than three years, I had lost my sense of self and was battling postnatal depression. I needed a creative outlet and something that was mine,” Olivia says.

“Opening a shop was something I thought I could never achieve but I threw caution to the wind and just went for it. I have loved every minute of it so far and the sense of empowerment I have felt from owning my own business is amazing.”

After opening at the end of February this year, Kiki + Finch has established itself as a community-driven business, with a focus on empowering mums and other women.

“I know firsthand how clothing can affect your personal confidence and self-esteem. It is very easy to get up day after day doing the normal mum tasks and think ‘why bother,’ when it comes to choosing what to wear” explains Olivia.

“When your body goes through so many changes, choosing an outfit can be very overwhelming. My aim at Kiki + Finch is to provide women with clothing that can be thrown on without much thought, be practical and comfortable whilst looking fab and most importantly helping them feel like their best selves.”

Helping kids this Xmas

By Parker McKenzie Vibe Health and Fitness in Emerald is running a Christmas 4 Kids appeal for a charity supporting children in out of home care.

Vibe Health and Fitness is asking people to leave a small present under the Christmas tree in their main lobby to be donated to Backpacks 4 Vic Kids, a charity providing essential items for children and teenagers in out of home care throughout Victoria.

Tiffany Smith said she was inspired to help the charity because of her own experience as a foster parent.

“Our daughter has been with us since she was 12 and she is now 25,” she said.

“A lot of these kids they don’t want to ask you for anything because you are a complete stranger until they get to know you.”

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids have provided over $3 million worth of material relief to local children in need.

Mrs Smith said she donated remotely through Covid restrictions after discovering the charity.

“During lockdown I discovered Sally, whose the CEO Backpacks4Vickids, talking about her charity,” she said.

“I thought that’d have been fantastic if that was around when Amber first came to us.”

The charity is a registered non-for-profit run by volunteers and was founded in 2014.

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids have supported over 9000 children with donations and relief packages.

Mrs Smith said every donated backpack has around $400 worth of items for the child.

“It’s a very transparent organisation because every single donation that comes in is counted, and every piece of clothing is barcoded so it can be put on racks,” she said.

Tiffany is asking people to leave donations under a tree in the main lobby of the gym.

“In total to get a boy and girl backpack for all age groups is 76 different backpacks, so the range that they need is huge.”

Backpacks 4 Vic Kids operates solely on donations sought through fundraising, grants and sponsorship.

She said the best donations to give at the moment are those for older teenagers.

“Anything for older girls and boys, so anything for those aged 14 and older,” she said.

“Including clothing, books, makeup but nothing with aerosol, alcohol or a blade it, even a shaving kit without the blade would be good for a teenage boy whose too shy to ask for one.”

Twilight shopping spree Rogue Bear in Upwey is running a Christmas late night shopping time featuring fun activities, discounts, prizes and product sampling on Thursday 16 December.

Owner Tam Mcleish said the event said shopping nights are something Rogue Bear wants to do more of.

“We open at 10am in the morning and run it until 8pm at night,” she said.

“We are doing these amazing grazing boxes as well at the moment, so people can pick and pack their own grazing box,” she said.

“From 4pm onward we do a complimentary glass of bubbling so you can come make a bit of a night with it.

“Pre-book yourself with a table with one of the local restaurants too, because we are trying to help promote local businesses in Upwey.”

There will complimentary tea and coffee from 10am to 11am, with other free tastings planned throughout the day.

“We try to keep light-hearted and fun and don’t put me too much pressure on people,” Mrs Mcleish said.

“Everyone really enjoyed it last time so that’s what it’s all about, we want people to have fun and shop locally.”

Foothills creates hampers

By Mikayla van Loon It’s a busy time of year for the volunteers at Foothills Community Care with only a couple of weeks until Christmas Day is upon them.

For the team at Upwey, these next few weeks are about ensuring they can feed and hand out enough hampers to get people through the festive season.

“We’ll end up giving out probably about 400 to 450, special Christmas hampers throughout December. So it is a really special time,” Foothills CEO Stephen Barrington said.

“It’s beautiful because we find people like to donate to us because they know what we do just goes straight out the door to others in need.”

Mr Barrington said if people want to donate items to the hampers, they can do so by taking part in the Reverse Advent Calendar food drive or through the Giving Trees where presents can be dropped off at Upwey Community Bendigo Bank or Upwey Baptist Church.

The regular Monday community meals in Upwey will also have a Christmas theme for the next few weeks before the annual Christmas lunch.

Every year, Foothills Community Care hosts a lunch at the St John the Baptist Parish Hall in Ferntree Gully because it has a large space for people to enjoy their meal.

Just a short trip down the road from Upwey, everyone is welcome from the Hills area but bookings are essential.

This year because of Covid-19 restrictions the annual Christmas Day lunch will be held on Christmas Eve over two sittings for 130 people each.

“It’s so people can really enjoy themselves.

Full steam ahead Excitement took over Belgrave when the return of daily Puffing Billy steam-train rides coincided with the opening of the new $24.8 million Lakeside Visitor Centre.

The official opening ceremony on 3 December was attended by a packed house of state government officials, members of the Emerald Tourist Railway Board, local residents and media.

Puffing Billy Railway chief executive officer Peter Abbott said it was an exciting time for everyone involved in making the facility a reality.

“I want to welcome everyone for coming along to the opening of the new building for

the Puffing Billy,” Mr Abbott said.

“It’s something that has been dreamt of for around 30 years so it’s very exciting to actually have it.”

The new facility, co-funded by the Puffing Billy railway line, the Victorian state government and the Commonwealth government, includes a collection of steam train artefacts, a cafe and conference rooms.

Minister for tourism, sport and major events Martin Pakula said he was in attendance when the project broke ground in 2019.

“This is a great opportunity for people to come together to celebrate the railway, to enjoy its history and go for a ride,” he said.

The Puffing Billy railway line was built in 1900 to serve the local farming and timber industries in the Dandenong Ranges before becoming a tourist attraction.

The current railway line is a 25.1 kilometres long single track railway that primarily leaves from Belgrave station and runs until Gembrook.

Prior to the pandemic the Puffing Billy steam train was a popular tourist attraction with more than 500,000 visitors annually using the daily services of the steam train.

It is operated by the Emerald Tourist Railway board and the volunteer Puffing Billy Preservation Society.

It’s a huge effort, requiring 650 specialist contractors to deliver almost 30,000 hours of works on private properties across 41 local government areas. The June storm and flood event had a massive impact on communities and residents, the effects are still felt.

Vaccine candidate

Two drivers were hit with impound offences on Tuesday 30 November.

A 23-year-old man was detected by police speeding at 156 kilometres an hour in a 60 zone on Dorset Road, Boronia.

The man was charged on summons with speeding and driving at a speed dangerous.

A 35-year-old man was detected speeding at 127 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Mountain Highway, Bayswater.

He was charged by police on summons with speeding and driving at a speed dangerous.

Both vehicles were impounded for 30 days and incurred costs of $1,325 each.

53-year-old woman was detected driving on Democrat Drive in the Basin whilst suspended on Wednesday 1 December.

After being stopped by highway patrol, police said she tested positive result for illicit drugs.

Her vehicle was impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1325 and she is to be charged on summons with all matters.

By Parker McKenzie A collaborative effort between Victorian scientists, researchers and manufacturers has produced Australia’s first mRNA vaccine candidate.

450 doses have been produced in Boronia, enabling 150 people to take part in phase 1 clinical trials.

The project has been led by mRNA Victoria in partnership with Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Doherty Institute and IDT Australia.

Results from the trials being run by the Doherty Institute are expected in 2022.

Doherty Institute Head of Vaccine and Immunisation research group Professor Terry Nolan said this is a major milestone in Australia’s ability to manufacture home-grown Covid-19 mRNA vaccines.

“We are excited to commence Phase 1 clinical trials of this candidate, along with the protein vaccine candidate developed by the Doherty Institute, in the coming months.” He said.

The Victorian state government invested $5 million in equipment to enable IDT Australia to manufacture the vaccine candidate.

Minister for Innovation, Medical Research and the Digital Economy Jaala Pulford said the vaccine candidate was an Australian first.

It is an incredible achievement to have made an mRNA vaccine candidate that is ready for clinical trials.” She said.

“We’re serious about developing our mRNA manufacturing capacity and doing it quickly as we can, because it will save lives.”

The vaccine will be required to pass three stages of clinical trials before being subject to

Monash University Professor of Pharmaceutical Biology Colin Pouton said he has worked closely with IDT to develop the vaccine candidate.

The Victorian Electoral Commission has announced the Yarra Ranges Council byelection for Streeton Ward will be held next February by postal vote.

The by-election was triggered by the resignation of Councillor Cathrine Burnett-Wake after she accepted a Liberal party vacancy in the Eastern Victoria electorate of the Legislative Council following Edward O’Donohue’s resignation in September.

Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately issued a call to Streeton Ward residents and ratepayers to be ready to have their say.

“You must be correctly enrolled by the close of roll, which is 4 pm on Friday 10 December. As this is a postal election it’s important to check your address details are correct, this includes any alternative postal address,” Mr Gately said.

‘If you’re an Australian citizen who resides within Streeton Ward and you’ve recently turned 18 or moved, and you haven’t enrolled or updated your address, or if you’ve

just closed your post office box with Australia Post, you can enrol or update your details online at vec.vic.gov.au/enrolment.”

Council-enrolled voters who were enrolled in Streeton Ward for the 2020 general election for Yarra Ranges Shire Council will be automatically enrolled unless circumstances have changed. Council-enrolled voters can check their enrolment by calling the council on 1300 368 333.

Nominations for candidates open on Thursday 13 January and close on Tuesday 18 January 2022.

“Voting in local council elections is compulsory if you’re a State-enrolled voter, and we encourage council-enrolled voters to vote,” Mr Gately said.

“Your local council makes important decisions about your community facilities, services and local business community, so it’s important to have your say by voting in this by-election.”

Operation Trident cleaning up streets Police checked over 400 people and conducted almost 300 searches at high risk areas in Casey, Cardinia and Greater Dandenong as part of Operation Trident.

The operation ran from 25 to 27 November specifically targeting weapons offences.

Officers arrested and charged 20 people for a range of offences, including trafficking and possessing a drug of dependence, armed robbery, weapons offences, driving offences and theft.

As part of these arrests police said they seized 16 grams of ice with an estimated street value of $13000 and a number of weapons, including knives and ASP batons.

They also impounded a vehicle driven by a P plater who recorded a breath alcohol reading of .189.

Trident is an ongoing operation that will be conducted regularly throughout the summer months.

Streeton Ward by-election announced

A 40-year-old Ringwood woman has died in police custody at Knox Police station.

Police said the woman was found unresponsive during a routine check by custody officers just before 8pm on 2 December.

The woman was awaiting a remand hearing after being taken into custody.

Police said officers commenced CPR and paramedics were immediately called.

The woman was transported to hospital and later passed away.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the death, with oversight from Professional Standards Command, which is standard protocol when a person has died in police custody.

Belgrave Heights to host carols

By Parker McKenzie Belgrave Heights locals have organised a community Christmas carol event to help bring the community together in the spirit of the holidays.

The event will be held at the Belgrave Heights Convention Centre on Sunday 19 December.

Miriam Major organised the event with her husband Jeremy, and said it will be a great opportunity for the community of the Dandenong Ranges to reconnect in person.

“My husband and I are passionate about our local community and we see this event as a great opportunity to bring the community together after the last two years we’ve had,” she said.

“The extended lockdowns have been extremely hard on all of us, especially those home-schooling and those who were separated from family and friends.”

The event will feature a prayer tree, a nativity scene for photos and a make your own Christmas ornament workshop.

Mrs Major said along with her husband she will cover any shortfall in funding for the event.

“The Community Carols will be a back to basics event with some Christmas activities, including the chance to make your own ornament before the carols begin at 7pm.”

“To cover the costs of the event, I have created a Go Fund Me page and will ask for a gold coin donation on the night for those who are able,” Mrs Major said.

Mrs Major has asked children to attend in costume as sheep, shepherds, wise men and women or angels to compliment the nativity scene.

She said the most important thing is for the community come along and enjoy the opportunity to reconnect in person.

“We are also committed to donating any surplus funding to Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Services to support them in the important work they do for those in the community who are struggling,” Mrs Major said.

“We would love to hear from anyone in the community who may be able to support the event by volunteering on the night in the cafe, helping with activities or assisting everyone to adhere to Covid rules.”

Doors open at 6pm before the event begins at 7pm.

Everyone attending the event will be required to show proof of double vaccination upon arrival.

Knox City Council’s annual Christmas carol event has moved online this year and there is plenty to be excited about.

The virtual carols will be held on Saturday 11 December from 7.15pm to 10pm.

Knox Mayor Cr Susan Laukens said after a difficult year of Covid restrictions, people in the Knox community are keen to get together to celebrate Christmas.

“We are disappointed that we couldn’t bring the Knox community Carols by Candlelight in person this year, however, our Carols event can attract up to 25,000 people and crowds of this size still present a risk to our community,” “I am proud to present our virtual program that includes outstanding local and nationally acclaimed performers, sing-a-long carols, and of course, a visit from Santa himself.”

Children’s entertainment will open the show followed by the announcement of the Knox Factor 2021 competition winner.

The Royal Australian Navy band is the program partner for the event and will feature heavily throughout the main carols concert at 8pm.

Leading Seaman and Royal Australian Navy Band vocalist Stephanie McCorkelle said it’s really important to do carols in some capacity.

“I think the most important thing about carols events is actually spending time with family and friends and, you know, sitting on a picnic blanket and enjoying the music and sharing some food, and that can all still be done at home and you get to even be a little bit more comfy on your couch,” “We get to be the face of the Navy and we get to enjoy engaging with the community and the people in the community, and I think it’s so

Turning on the lights for Corey Brasher

By Mikayla van Loon Montrose has turned the lights on for Corey in another spectacular year of a Christmas display like no other.

Debbie Brasher has this year created a winter wonderland at her home, fitted with snow and snowmen, a talking tree and a gift giving wall to be seen all throughout December.

What started four years ago in memory of her son Corey who died from an asthma attack on 15 January 2018, has become the most magical community Christmas event in the local area.

Although a slow start to the opening on 1 December because of the wild weather, Ms Brasher said Santa nights like the one on Saturday 4 December are always busy.

“Santa night is always a busy night when they get all the photos in there, it’s all fun,” she said.

“The first night was not too bad but it’s been a bit cold. Of course we had the cleansing storm on the first night and then the second night was a bit cold and miserable but it’ll pick up, it’s only the first week. So it’s pretty good but it’s been pretty fun.”

Ms Brasher said although it’s a little overwhelming, she gets to enjoy the community spirit and all the children coming out to see Santa and the display every night, which is her favourite part.

“I got called Mrs Claus about 100 times tonight. And then I’ve got my regulars that are coming back, which is great.

“So it’s all a little overwhelming but you can hear it all buzzing inside.”

No one goes without anything either, with a gift exchange - children can take a gift but then have to come back and replace it with another - as well as small presents from Santa.

Every intricate detail, from the poetry notes to the window displays, Ms Brasher’s care in creating a truly awe inspiring and extraordinary Christmas experience for young and old alike is remarkable.

The gratitude and joy Lights on for Corey brought people is also just as profound and heartwarming.

But while the gift of lights and Christmas spirit is at the heart of what Ms Brasher does, raising money to be used in the community and donated to charity is how she keeps on

Although a free event, donation tins are available and this year little snowmen are for sale, to help raise funds.

“A snowman will slowly melt away but in our hearts you will always stay,” the tag reads.

Hoping to have the biggest year of donations yet, Ms Brasher would like to raise $7500.

So far she has raised around $1500.

“We have no idea where it’s going to go and we’re open for everyone to give me ideas,” she said.

Ms Brasher is open for suggestions on how to spend the money raised, with people able to send an email to oooops1@bigpond.com Santa comes to say hello every Saturday night before Christmas Day at 8.30pm.

Lights on for Corey is open Sunday to Thursday 8.30pm to 10.30pm and on from 8.30pm to late on Fridays and Saturdays.

Preparations needed now

By Parker McKenzie Both the Country Fire Authority (CFA) and the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) are encouraging Victorians to take steps towards protecting themselves from bushfires ahead of the 2021-22 bushfire season.

The Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley are considered high risk of bushfires because of the intersection of public and private land, as well as high density of people and potential fuel for a fire.

The Australian and New Zealand National Council for fire and emergency services has indicates the potential for an average to lower-than average bushfire season in Victoria in their seasonal outlook for December and February, however, CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan warned Victorians not to get complacent.

“We know it only takes one bad day to have a bad fire season so we need to stay vigilant this summer,” he said.

“Many people have already prepared their properties, but recent wet conditions mean we’ve seen a lot of vegetation growth, so it’s important to keep maintaining your property by keeping your grass low and any other vegetation cut back as well.”

After an unprecedented fire season two years ago saw regional communities devastated and the state clouded in smoke, the VBA is encouraging people to prepare early.

The VBA’s State Building Surveyor Andrew Cialini said it is important to prepare early because Victoria is one of the most bushfire prone areas in the world.

“Being prepared early is key, don’t wait until it’s too late, start updating your survival plans now and get your home ready for fire season,” he said.

“Steps you can take now include clearing leaves from gutters and installing leaf-guards, as well as protecting evaporative coolers with properly sized metal bushfire mesh screens.”

The CFA and VBA are telling Victorians to prepare early for the bushfire season.

Mr Heffernan said the start of summer was timely reminder to make a bushfire safety plan if you do not already have one in place.

“Before you get too busy with festive season celebration and Christmas shopping, spend some time to make a plan to keep your family safe,” he said.

“Your plan should include things like which fire danger rating will be your trigger to leave, where you will go, and what route you will take and it should always contain different scenarios and back-up plans.”

Mr Cialini said homeowners can contact a registered building practitioner to see how they can retrofit their properties with additional safety features as a part of their bushfire safety plan.

“There are easy and affordable things owners can do to protect their properties from things like ember attack,” he said.

“You can seal gaps in the external walls and eaves with silicone, put silicon weather strips and draught excluders on windows and external doors, cover vents in external walls with metal bushfire mesh and seal around roofing joints and roof penetrations.”

Both the CFA and the VBA are encouraging people to leave early in the event of a bushfire in the area.

The VBA said leaving early means leaving the area before a fire starts and not only when you see flames or smell smoke.

“Leaving early means leaving the night before or early in the morning of a high-risk fire day,” Mr Heffernan said.

“It means it’s easier to make good, rational decisions and avoid panic, becoming trapped and risking serious injury or death.”

The CFA website contains information about how to make a bushfire safety plan and preparing an emergency kit to bring when leaving early at cfa.vic.gov.au.

New Liberal candidate

By Parker McKenzie Aaron Violi knows he has big shoes to fill if he is elected to replace the venerated Tony Smith as member for Casey at the 2022 federal election.

The pressure doesn’t seem to bother him, instead he seems to enjoy it.

The local businessman and third generation Casey resident beat a crowded field of contenders to become the candidate for Casey when the widely respected former Speaker of the House retires from politics at the next federal election.

Mr Violi said Mr Smith is a friend and a mentor, and the pair holds similar political philosophies.

“The two areas Tony and I are most aligned is the view that the first and primary responsibility of a member of parliament is to represent and deliver for their local communities,” he said.

“The second is the importance of integrity in politics and that all members of parliament are custodians of democracy.”

After convincing the majority of the party members that he was the right person to take the Liberal party forward, his next task is convincing the people of Casey.

Mr Violi said his aim if elected is to deliver “tangible outcomes for the residents, families, small businesses and communities of Casey” after a tough 18 months of Covid lockdowns and storms.

“Every town and community right across Casey have different challenges and needs and a local member of parliament needs to be available and out in every town and community engaging with community groups, businesses and

residents to understand their challenges and ideas to improve their community,” he said.

“I have spent my life involved in a variety of community groups in Casey including the Lilydale Township Action Group, Yarra Valley Railway as well as various local sporting clubs and if successful in being elected as the representative of Casey I would always be available and accessible to the community.”

The outer eastern seat has been held by the Liberal party since 1984 and was won by Mr Smith by a margin of 9.28 per cent at the 2019 federal election.

Mr Violi said one area he is passionate about is ensuring there are adequate resources for mental health support in the electorate.

“I am proud that the Morrison government and Tony Smith delivered $4.5 million in funding to establish an integrated Youth Health Hub in Casey and I will be working to deliver ever more funding for mental health resources,” Mr Violi said.

“It is also important to recognise the crucial role community organisations such as Men’s Sheds, sporting clubs, community houses and many more organisations play in improving people’s mental health.

“Ensuring they have the best possible facilities to make people feel welcome and comfortable will be a focus of mine.”

Labor has named Bill Brindle, who lost to Mr Smith in the 2019 election, as their candidate.

A number of other independent and party aligned candidates are expected to contest the election as well.

The 2022 federal election will be held on or before 21 May.

Upwey skate park opens

By Parker McKenzie Upwey Skate Park has received a $300,000 facelift through a shared investment from state government and local council.

While local skaters have already taken the opportunity to become accustomed with the new park, an opening ceremony was held on 3 December to commemorate the project’s completion.

Monbulk MP and Deputy Premier James Merlino said milestones for the project were missed because of lockdowns in 2021.

“This is a great time as we emerge out of the pandemic and the community have an opportunity to enjoy a facility like this,” he said.

“It’s important we invest in just in organised sport, but also recreational activities such as a skate park because they are incredibly popular particularly for young men and women who aren’t involved in organised sport.”

The project was funded with $150,000 from the government’s growing suburbs fund and a contribution of the same amount from Yarra Ranges Council.

Yarra Ranges Council Mayor Cr Jim Child said young people told council a better skate park was needed.

“Our team has worked with young people in consultation to achieve the outcome we’ve got now,” he said.

“I know that one of the members who worked on the project was pretty enthusiastic about it too, and got out there and tested it himself.”

The northern section of the park was demolished to make way for an expanded area for locals to enjoy.

Mr Merlino said there is another round of projects that will receive a contribution from the growing suburbs fund.

“The council have put forward a number of projects into that fund, so I look forward to making some announcements in the not too distant future,” he said.

“People want to enjoy life. This has been such a tough couple of years with the pandemic and to head into the Christmas, New Years and summer period with restrictions gone, no lockdown and we are opening facilities like this is what people want to see.”

Home front perspective

By Mikayla van Loon The Shire of Lillydale was gravely impacted by World War I and caused the greatest number of casualties in the area.

A new book written and produced by the Mount Evelyn RSL and local historian Anthony McAleer will be launching this weekend, documenting the impact the war had on people who remained at home.

After discovering many unknown and incredible stories about what people endured at home in Lilydale, Mooroolbark, Montrose, Mount Evelyn and the rest of the small communities in the shire during World War I, Mr McAleer decided to document those experiences in a book.

‘Home front: the impact of war on the shire of Lillydale’ is the latest historical book from Mr McAleer who has spent 30 years researching and hearing local stories from the time.

“I started this early enough that I was lucky enough to interview the last two World War I veterans from this area and I was able to interview a lot of people who lived in this area during that period,” he said.

“Nowadays, there are a lot more records on offer that you can access, so we were able to get a lot more information.”

Mr McAleer said during the centenary there was a lot of focus on the soldiers who fought in the war but not much had been done on what the people who stayed in the shire went through.

“The First World War is certainly a significant event in the history of this area...but little was done in regards to what happened locally and certainly it had such a huge impact and majorly affected everyone.

“There was a lot that came to light during the centenary from the different events that we had and people telling their family stories about what happened to their family.”

Anthony McAleer has documented the impact of World War I on the Shire of Lillydale in his most recent book Home Front. The hall of the original Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre was used as the base for the Red Cross and it was where soldiers left from and returned from war.

Picture: MIKAYLA VAN LOON Mount Evelyn RSL wanted to keep a permanent record of each of those stories to share and acknowledge the hardships of the residents in what was very much rural farmland.

“It was very much considered part of the country. Lilydale was a little bit more urban and was a little bit more densely populated.

There was certainly a lot more industry here and it was the centre for the area but places like Monbulk, Olinda, Montrose and Mooroolbark were little farming communities.

“There’s things like what happened to those farming communities when all of the fit and able men enlist in the military and go overseas.

So it talks about the hardships and the toil on those left behind.”

The book places a particular emphasis on the role women played to keep farms operating and how they knitted socks for the Red Cross in their spare time but also how local sports clubs suffered from a lack of men and the ongoing effects of war.

“In those decades after the war, it took a long, long time for people to readjust to how life was before,” Mr McAleer said.

Dame Nellie Melba’s influence and contribution to the Red Cross during the war years is another key feature of the book, something that earned her the damehood in 1918.

“She was probably the one individual who raised the most money for the Red Cross during the war years.

“She did numerous concerts. I think she did about three or four just in this building (Lilydale Athenaeum Theatre) to help out the local patriotic welfare efforts.”

The book reflects the generational impact the First World War had on people, whether they fought on the frontlines, donned a uniform, didn’t enlist at all or grew up without a family member.

“It impacted schools, community groups, churches, commerce, pastimes, sport and life on the land and it placed burdens on old and young, male and female, urban and rural,” Mr McAleer said.

“There was no one who was not affected by it.”

Curbside circus carnies

By Mikayla van Loon Curbside Carnies is returning to the Yarra Ranges with three brand new sessions all happening in just one weekend.

Dreams of running away with the circus, even if it is only for a couple of hours, can come true on 11 and 12 December when performers come to Chirnside Park, Yarra Glen and Selby to share their skills for free.

Event producer Sophie deLightful said this is the second time she has partnered with Yarra Ranges Council, who are funding the programs, to bring some life back to the area after so many lockdowns.

“It’s just a continuation of trying to bring the community back together and reactivate them and get them moving and happy again after the big lockdown period,” she said.

Sophie said there is this love of the circus and intrigue about the artform that dates back through the ages.

“There’s been this romanticised image that running away with the circus means running away from your responsibilities or running away from anything that might not be going right,” she said.

“Once they actually start to play with toys and try to stand on their head and they realise that no matter what age, whether it’s kids or adults, there isn’t an age limit for the circus.

“It is something that can be enjoyed by people of all walks of life, of all ages, all experiences and backgrounds. It’s just something that’s universal.”

Curbside Carnies started a year ago to bring CovidSafe performances to various towns and

suburbs across the state and in turn support performers who were without work.

“It also has benefited the community because being free, everyone has had a chance to come and check it out whether or not they’re aficionado of certain skills or whether it’s completely new to them.

“It’s been really enjoyable to bring so much positivity and happiness back into the community every time we go out there.”

Foothills Art Trail brings community and art together

By Parker McKenzie Take the time to view the artwork displayed throughout local trader’s shopfronts and windows in Ferntree Gully next time you are shopping in the area.

Local artists have been displaying their work in businesses thanks to the Hut Gallery Ferntree Gully Arts Society.

The Foothills Arts Trail project is a community art exhibition that aims to bring art and the community together.

President of the Ferntree Gully Arts Society Shirley Dougan said there are around 30 businesses involved in displaying the artwork.

“The whole point of this project is to bring energy to the different traders living in the village,” she said.

“There is something like 88 businesses in Ferntree Gully, who knew?”

24 artists have supplied the 48 pieces being displayed throughout local traders.

Mrs Dougan said new pieces will be displayed in early December and interested people can view all the pieces online.

“We got a new website courtesy of a grant of Knox City Council,” she said.

set up a comprehensive homepage called foothills art trail where you can click on the artwork and it will tell you where the artwork is and how to get in touch with the artist.”

The art will be on display until the traders close for the Christmas break when the Art Society will host a gallery featuring all the pieces.

Mrs Dougan said they have sold five pieces already and people interested in purchasing the art can do so via their website or by visiting the businesses themselves.

“On all the artwork there is QR code which will direct to the website,” she said.

“There is a real range in style, they are all quite different and it has been really good. The feedback we get from traders has been really positive.

“We’ve also had an indication that from a couple of places that they would be interested in making this an ongoing thing, with art from the gallery being displayed on their walls almost permanently.”

The Ferntree Gully Arts Society was founded in 1944 and is based at 157 Underwood Rd, Ferntree Gully.

Mental health pop ups Knox City Council has announced local residents can receive direct, individualised mental health and wellbeing support through a new pop-up service in Boronia.

The Mental Health & Wellbeing Hub, delivered by EACH and supported by Knox City Council offers a local place to get assistance and be connected with relevant services for those who may be unsure of where to start in getting help.

The service will be walk in friendly to allow local residents to seek help on their own terms.

Knox City Council Mayor, Cr Susan Laukens said supporting the community’s mental health and wellbeing is more important now than ever before.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges for so many in our community and continues to put pressure on our relationships, families, work life, finances and more,” she said.

“This has led to more people struggling with mental health and social isolation, and these pressures don’t disappear as soon as restrictions ease.”

Knox City Council said it has advocated strongly to the state government to include Knox in its investment in local Mental Health & Wellbeing Hubs.

EACH chief executive officer Peter Ryzyla said people who previously haven’t needed access to mental health support are finding they aren’t coping.

“This new service will work in partnership with existing services such as counselling, headspace and family support services so that we can respond to the growing demand for mental health support across a wide range of

the community,” he said.

“The pop-up mental health services are a great initiative of the State Government as part of their mental health reform strategy, making services more accessible, more local and more responsive to community and carer needs.”

Council will support the Boronia Hub in partnership with EACH, assisting to connect people with services that address these social drivers and contribute to mental health outcomes.

“We are proud to partner with EACH on a holistic approach that considers the underlying drivers and causes of stress, anxiety and mental health challenges, connecting people to other support services that can help,” Cr Laukens said.

“Our mental health and wellbeing affects so many aspects of our lives and our ability to participate and contribute to our community, so Council is focused on helping the people of Knox to find the support they need to live fulfilling lives here.”

Council also developed a Knox Mental Health Action Plan in partnership with local peak body agencies and mental health service organisations, which provides a strategic framework to address and coordinate mental health interventions in the community. The plan recognises that addressing the mental health needs of the eastern region together is critical in assisting communities and influencing these social challenges.

Emerald Rotary awarded 2021 community group The Rotary Club of Emerald and District has been awarded the Emerald Village Association’s inaugural Community Group of the Year award.

The wards were handed out at Emerald Village Association’s annual community meeting held at the Hills Hub on 24 November.

President of the Rotary Club of Emerald and District Shalini Penny said she was thrilled the club had been acknowledged for its work in supporting the local community.

“I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of our members, many of whom dedicate many hours each week making a positive difference in the lives of people who live in Emerald and surrounding suburbs,” Mrs Penny said.

“It is wonderful to be recognised for our work which is vast, covering the young, the elderly, schools and the community as a whole.”

The Rotary Club won the community group of the year because of its local fundraising and charity programs, including: Organising community fund-raising events such as the Kids Fun Run with Thomas, All American Car Display and monthly Trash 2 Treasure market. Since it began in 2002 the fun

run has raised over $671,000.

Distributing more than $15,000 in grocery, fuel and pharmacy vouchers to locals impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The YV-CPHub is also facilitating the supply and installation of free energy efficiency products to upgrade the energy efficiency of products in your homes and to reduce your energy bills.

A registered installer will provide a range of free products such as LED lights, draft excluders, water efficient shower roses, home energy electricity monitoring devices linked to your mobile phone, and lots more, ABSOLUTELY FREE through the Victorian Government Energy Upgrade Program.

These will save households many hundreds of dollars annually on their energy bills.

For those who prefer a DIY solution for home energy efficiency, there will be home energy efficiency kits available through the Eastern Regional Libraries, compliments of three local councils - Knox, Maroondah and Yarra Ranges.

These kits will contain a thermal camera, an electricity monitoring device, instruction manual and more, for very easy DIY projects in home energy efficiency.

Community members can register on the YV-CPHub website to be informed when these kits will become available (expected mid-January 2022).

An exciting innovation for the YVCPHub, is their focus on education and training programs.

A training course at Box Hill Institute (Lilydale Campus) to become a voluntary home energy efficiency advisor for your local community energy group will commence in February/March 2022.

In addition, the YV-CPHub has developed a short course on Community Renewable Energy, being trialed at three local Community or Neighbourhood Houses in Nillumbik, Emerald or Pakenham.

Reflecting on year As Christmas approaches, we naturally reflect on the year that was and our hopes for the year ahead.

Like last year, it has been a difficult year, but we can have some confidence that life is now far more normal.

When I put myself forward at the 2019 Federal election, I made a number of pledges and commitments to build a stronger and safer local community. At that time, none of us envisaged that a pandemic would change all of our lives.

Despite this, during lockdowns and other challenges, the work to deliver these has continued and is continuing.

Funding for better sporting and community facilities, including a new pavilion and additional netball court at Wandin North Reserve, an upgraded pavilion at Mooroolbark Soccer Club and an oval and lighting upgrade at Kimberley Reserve in Chirnside Park has allowed for greater levels of female participation.

Operated by Victoria Police, CCTV security cameras across our region are helping to combat local crime.

In Healesville, Yarra Glen and Yarra Junction, key environmental initiatives are providing a direct benefit to those communities, as well as reducing emissions.

Throughout this year there has been substantial progress in sealing more dirt roads in our community thanks to $150 million of funding from the Morrison Government.

As roads are sealed, the days of dust and mud end for many local residents.

A Youth Health Hub and Headspace service based in Lilydale is now delivering health services to teenagers and young adults. Importantly, it has links into the community and a focus on outreach. As we all know, the pandemic has been a particularly challenging time for young people.

A snapshot of contemporary Australia A review of Roots: Home is Who We Are When SBS launched its inaugural Emerging Writers’ Competition in August 2020, inviting submissions of short memoirs on the topic of “Growing up in diverse Australia”, there was public outcry led by Melbourne-based writer Kelly Bartholomeusz.

Published by Overland Literary Journal on October 5, 2020, Bartholomeusz’s essay was titled “Stop asking ‘diverse writers’ to tell you about their lives”. Her words are worth quoting to some length: “It is frustrating to see opportunities for ‘diverse writers’ linked to their willingness to write narrowly about their diversity. This approach disqualifies the many talented writers who have already processed or written about these experiences, and who have bigger visions or better imaginations to endlessly revisit the same questions. Who want to see themselves in Australia’s future as well as its past.”

“I imagine there are also writers who do not wish to revisit their childhoods because they do not want to be retraumatised. I reflect regularly and deeply on my upbringing as a Sri Lankan Australia. I’ve also written about it.

It’s worth exploring and rich in its own way, but that does not mean I care to pick it apart in a mainstream public forum or to hinge my

Bartholomeusz may have a point, but the 30 short memoirs collected in Roots: Home is Who We Are: Voices from the SBS Emerging Writers’ Competition (2021) – selected from more than 2,000 entries from across the country – are proof that human courage and resilience should never be underestimated.

Contrary to Bartholomeusz’s presumption about mainstream media’s “restrictive briefs and loaded questions”, judges sought and found “courageous and original voices, writing with a sharp take on modern Australian life, and nuanced views on our diverse realities”.

More importantly, instead of “marginalisation and otherness”, these emerging writers have explored universal themes such as place,

era, sexuality, religion, neurodiversity and disability, ethnicity and culture, and the myriad ways we can call Australia home As the book’s subtitle “Home is Who We Are” suggests, these stories have highlighted individual journeys of self-discovery. They mirror our own life-long attempt to find out who we are – not just defying how others define us, but also seeking an honest way to define ourselves.

Having relentlessly dissected the nature and significance of identity, these writers have empowered and entitled themselves as part of Australia’s future. It is a birthright that they have fiercely defended and will continue to safeguard.

Instead of “retraumatising” themselves, these writers – wielding the Power of Words and supported by families and communities – celebrate our commonalities and embrace our differences as Everyday Australians. In the words of competition judges Melissa Lucashenko and Benjamin Law: “This is storytelling that requires you to see the world from a different perspective.”

These writers have boldly started a conversation about diversity being both an ambition and a strength. Their stories are an invitation to examine our own unique and intimate worlds as Australians. Who are we, and what kind of Australia do we want for ourselves?

Dune Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson and Oscar Isaac Rated M Dune is a riveting science fiction epic worthy of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel, and further proof of director Denis Villeneuve’s talent for atmosphere, captivating imagery and character development woven into the world-building.

The spacefaring House Atreides is granted control of the desert planet Arrakis as rival House Harkonnen plots against them. Despite its dense backdrop of destiny, subterfuge and galactic politics, Villeneuve’s Dune is remarkably simple.

Timothee Chalamet is stolid but sensitive as Paul, heir to House Atreides. Every supporting character is memorable and fulfils a well-defined role within the narrative universe. The plot and conflict are clearly-established mostly through deliberate action, as opposed to the relentless talking in David Lynch’s version.

Even at 156 minutes, Dune is superbly paced, rising in intensity while tightening its focus. As Arrakis turns from a gift to a burden and the Emperor-backed Harkonnen make their move against House Atreides, Paul’s special abilities are tested, city gives way to desert and noble titles crumble until only survival remains.

Dune features some of the most immersive, jaw-dropping art direction in all of cinema: every costume, location and technology feels strange and striking yet familiar and utterly real. The action sequences are enthralling and brought to life with ingenious effects and Hans Zimmer’s otherworldly, majestic score (although I miss the brighter colours and corny rock majesty of Toto’s score in Lynch’s Dune). Dune is a stunningly beautiful, masterfully-plotted epic, and perhaps the best blockbuster to enjoy after a long lockdown.

Officers to wear cameras Yarra Ranges Council’s Community Safety Officers have begun trialling the use of body worn cameras as part of their standard uniform, when out in the field.

The cameras will be secured on vests, reducing the amount of additional equipment required and will make Council’s Community Safety Officers easily identifiable when out in the community.

Community Safety Officers are tasked with many varying challenges on a day-to-day basis, these can range from stray animal pickups, and securing wandering livestock, to dog attacks, illegal burning off and illegal rubbish dumping.

In these instances and more, the cameras will be used when responding to calls or potentially hazardous situations.

The equipment will also assist the officers in obtaining information and evidence in a safer, more efficient way, while helping keep the community safe. Cameras will also be used when attending afterhours calls, where builtin GPS tracking will improve safety for our officers.

Evidence from other councils using similar equipment has shown that body-worn cameras can de-escalate situations if officers are called out to an incident involving aggressive

behaviour, including physical and verbal.

There has also been evidence from other councils to suggest that the use of body-worn cameras helps increase community confidence.

Data recorded by the cameras will be managed in line with relevant government legislation and Council’s privacy policy.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Cr Jim Child said the new equipment would assist Council’s Community Safety Officers greatly when going about their work in the field.

“It’s all about safety, not just for our staff but

for the community,” Cr Child said.

“The wearing of cameras also provides our officers with great learning opportunities, as it enables them to re-watch and review recordings of incidents to see what, if any, adjustments could be made in future situations.

“It also provides greater transparency around how incidents occur and how they are resolved.

“While the cameras won’t necessarily be switched on at all times, it is great that our officers now have that option to quickly begin recording information which can help in situations that require quick action.”

Pam celebrates 20 years at Avonsleigh General Store

By Peter Haddow For Pam Cox the last day serving customers at the Avonsleigh General Store was memorable.

She was inundated with flowers, chocolates, balloons, cards and other gifts from customers and work colleagues who for 18 years looked forward to her calm and warm manner behind the counter.

Always customer focused, she would make calls and keep her customers updated on the progress of any orders.

Pam would also sample chocolates the reps brought in, many times. Pam, 62, and her husband Tony, 68, have lived in the hills for the past 20 years, the last eight in Cockatoo, but have decided on a change in lifestyle and be closer to the sea in East Gippsland.

There they hope to learn kayaking and paddle boarding and just enjoy a new environment where they hope it will be quieter.

Pam has worked under two of the many owners of the Avonsleigh General Store.

15 years under Sam and Faye Khaddage, from Lebanon where they now live, could only say kind words about her.

“She would be difficult to replace as she was very honest and focussed on her job,” Faye said.

In 2018 Rebecca Breen took over the general store as a bucket list challenge.

Pam helped Rebecca transition from a novice to making improvements in a first rate retail outlet but it was not all one way.

Rebecca helped her gift wrap, probably her only weakness.

Rebecca said Pam was “part of the furniture in the community”, but more seriously added “she will be very much missed.”

Some people may have seen Pam as being very quiet, but others know her to hold a black belt in karate and taekwondo, as a ballroom dancer and someone who played competition cricket and hockey for Moorabbin.

She was someone who packed 6kg of chocolate bullets when camping ahead of essentials like the tent, cooking materials and sleeping bags.

St Kilda football club, along with Metallica, is her great passion. During the football season she goes to St Kilda games and intends to keep it up travelling the Bairnsdale to Melbourne train line, no doubt listening to Metallica while rugged up in black, red and white colours.

While putting all her gifts and flowers into her car Pam said work was never a problem

“I always enjoyed coming to work. The people made it so special. There was never a dull moment,” said Pam. From her new home near the sea she hopes to pick up some work in another general store or do some volunteer work.

“I like being around people and working

in a shop helps you stay in contact,” Pam said. It had been a privilege to watch children grow into adults and then to serve their children, some even had their first jobs under Pam’s guidance.

Conversely there were long term customers who passed away. Working at the general store was cool but now it was time for the next chapter in her life.

Community Bank Dandenong Ranges Group Chair, Deb Weber said: “As a thank you to the Dandenong Ranges brigades and their volunteers’ efforts to assist with the recovery from recent storm damage, together with their great work throughout the year, we are giving each brigade a Milwaukee toolkit.

“Fifteen kits will be provided, and the brigades can decide whether they wish to add to their existing equipment catalogue or offer as a prize for a raffle to raise funds to assist their brigade.

“Our company, on the suggestion of one of our directors, decided to donate this equipment.

“We are grateful to be supported by the supplier who contacted the Milwaukee distributor who donated eight reciprocating saws to the kits. A very generous offer which we accepted.

“We don’t think anyone, especially in the hills, underestimates the value of our volunteer CFA members and we are especially grateful in times of emergency to have people who selflessly give their time, energy, expertise and community spirit to assist others in need,” Ms.Weber said.

Ms Weber said: “The toolkits originally were being handed to brigades in July however with lockdowns and Covid-19 restrictions the remaining brigades are only just receiving theirs.

“We thought this snap of Belgrave brigade with our Belgrave manager, Teresa Spruhan, was such a good shot and we wanted to recognise our volunteers again and say well done and we appreciate you all.” ●

Cranbourne claims win Saturday pennant saw top of the table Monbulk 1 take on third placed Cranbourne at home in what turned out to be a close contest.

Jim Bras’ rink had their hands full early, but picked up 4 shots on the seventh end to level the scores. Scores were again tied after the twelfth, seventeenth and twentieth ends. The Monbulk rink won the last end to record victory by one shot, 17 to 16.

Brian Smith’s rink led by one shot on the seventh end, but then lost the next 6 ends to trail by 9 shots. They then won 6 of the next 7 ends to be one shot down going into the last end. Some excellent bowling from Karen Rice and Brian Smith left the Monbulk rink holding game, but the Cranbourne skip was able to limit the damage to one shot and the game ended in a tie, 17 shots all.

Eric Markham’s rink led throughout the game and won the majority of ends. However, two multiples of 6 and 4 against them limited their ability to set up a big lead and they won by 6 shots, 21 to 15.

Tim Stapleton’s rink struggled early and were 5 shots down after 5 ends. They then clawed their way back and by the sixteenth end were only two shots down. However, they lost the last 5 ends to go down by 11 shots, 13 to 24.

This meant that Monbulk lost the overall by 4 shots, 68 to 72, but still hold top place on the ladder.

Monbulk 2 travelled to Pakenham in what also proved a close contest. Alan Hamilton’s rink was all tied up after 9 ends. They then won 7 of the last 10 ends to win by 5 shots, 21 to 16Jim Anderson’s rink had control of the game after 9 ends when they led by 13 shots. However, a complete change came over the game and their opposition won 9 of the last 12 ends to take the points, 21 to 26. Eric Furby’s rink started slowly and were 4 shots down after two ends. They then shifted a gear and with a couple of multiples led by 10 shots after 9 ends. They were able to maintain this lead and won by 11 shots, 24 to 13.

Graeme Goller’s rink led by one shot after 12 ends. They only won two of the last 9 ends including two multiples of 4 to lose by 9 shots.

However, they won the crucial last end by two shots with some excellent bowling from Ron Sheppard and Maria Bass which gave the side the overall win by 2 shots, 79 to 77 and consolidated third place on the ladder.

Midweek pennant win for Monbulk Bowls team On Tuesday Monbulk 1 played Donvale at home.

Jim Bras’ rink dominated the game early and after 7 ends led by 12 shots. They then dropped their guard and lost 10 shots in 3 ends to be only 2 shots in front at the break.

After the break the Monbulk rink lifted winning 8 of the last 11 ends to win by 9 shots, 26 to 17.

Eric Markham’s rink trailed for most of the game and were 5 shots down with 5 ends to play. They then got on a roll picking up 10 shots in the next 4 ends to win by 4 shots 17 to 13.

Peter Koomen’s rink led by 3 shots at the lunch break, but then struggled to have an impact eventually losing by 10 shots, 15 to 25. Monbulk won the overall by 3 shots, 58 to 55 and are in third position on the ladder.

Monbulk 2 journeyed to Ferntree Gully where they found the faster green difficult to handle.

Eric Furby’s rink led by 4 shots after 4 ends, but then lost the next 10 ends to trail by 15 shots and they eventually lost by 17 shots, 9 to 26. Graeme Seymour’s rink managed to win only 7 ends and picked up 6 shots on the eighteenth end, but still lost by 13 shots, 16 to 29.

Graeme Goller’s rink levelled the scores on the eleventh end and then went 4 shots clear two ends later. However, they were outplayed over the final ends to lose by 3 shots 14 to 17.

Monbulk lost the overall by 33 shots, 39 to 72.
