By Cam Lucadou-Wells Labor will plunge $20 million into aquatic centre upgrades in Dandenong and Noble Park, if it wins the next federal election.

Opposition infrastructure spokesperson Catherine King with Bruce MP Julian Hill and Hotham MP Clare O’Neil announced the funding splash on 18 November.

It would help fund the $82.3 million new Dandenong Oasis – also known as Dandenong Wellbeing Centre (DWC) - as well as cover stage 2A of the Noble Park Aquatic Centre.

Greater Dandenong Council is seeking $20 million state funds and $20 million federal funds for the new Oasis.

Draft design plans have been released of the two-storey centre, to be built at the adjoining JC Mills Reserve on Cleeland Street.

It will combine allied-health services, a cafe, a creche and recreation such as a 50-metre indoor pool and an abundance of warm water pools for therapy and rehab.

The NPAC revamp includes a dedicated learn-to-swim pool, shelter and fixed gym equipment.

“These investments are about bringing world-class, modern facilities into the heart of Melbourne’s south-east,” Ms King said.

“It will mean locals can access the essential community facilities they need in their own neighbourhood, without having to battle traffic or put up with ageing and substandard facilities.”

Mr Hill said the DWC deserved support, given it was backed by the community and a “strong business case”.

At the 2019 federal election, Dandenong got “not one dollar” from the Liberal Government.

At the same time, it pork-barrelled “dodgy” projects as part of the “sports rorts” scandal, he said.

Mr Hill challenged the Morrison Government to “do the right thing, take the politics out of it and back the project”.

“It should be supported by everyone.”

Mayor Jim Memeti, in welcoming the pledge, said the project was “more than just a pool”.

“This is a community that is a low socioeconomic area. And we want to make sure we deliver a state-of-the-art facility.

“We are also seeking matching funding from the current Federal and State Governments to realise our projects.”

The council has cited the DWC as its No.1 priority, backed by overwhelming community feedback.

It is seen as vital in what is the most multicultural council area in Australia, most disadvantaged in metro Melbourne and most inactive in Victoria with a high prevalence of obesity, diabetes, mental illness and disabilities.

According to the council’s business case, the DWC is expected to boost Oasis’s attendance by 84 per cent. It would also overturn Oasis’s current $1 million-plus annual operating losses.

The minimum 5 Star Green Star facility is expected to create $8.9 million in annual community health benefits.

A financial lifeline

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A staggering $5.8 million of debts to predatory lenders were resolved by financial counsellors at South East Community Links in 2020-’21.

At its annual general meeting on 15 November, the service marked 50 years since it began as the memorably-named SCAAB (Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau).

Poignantly it also mourned the recent passing of its inspirational founder Merle Mitchell AM. It also reported the return of community financial hardship after the end of Covid supports – such as JobKeeper, JobSeeker supplements, home loan deferrals and moratoriums on evictions and utility disconnections.

As a result, clients were left with months of arrears on rents, home loans and utility bills – while many were on less income than before the pandemic, SECL chief executive Peter McNamara said.

Many were at risk of homelessness, and many sought SECL’s financial counsellors “in droves” to navigate the complex legal and debt recovery systems.

“It’s important for people to know that support is out there,” Mr McNamara said.

“SECL are able to help you in the most difficult financial situations.”

The ongoing financial strain across communities in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia Shire in post-Covid lockdown is SECL’s “most significant concern”.

The most impacted are asylum seekers and international students, who weren’t eligible for government support after their jobs stopped during Covid.

There was a monumental 152 per cent rise in youth homelessness cases. About 16 per cent of SECL clients were homeless or at risk.

SECL is the largest financial counselling provider to diverse communities in Australia, and the largest in emergency relief in Victoria.

Community and financial wellbeing manager Kay Dilger said the counsellors’ role was to “tell their stories” to creditors and come up with solutions. In the past year, it resulted in 13 per cent of debts being resolved.

Covid’s impact and financial abuse by partners were the top two issues for clients, Ms Dilger said.

Financial abuse was a common form of domestic violence, such as when all the debts are in “her name” and the income is in “his name”.

The lack of access to an income was a key barrier preventing women from leaving abusive relationships, Ms Dilger said.

SECL helped a refugee and domestic violence survivor who was coerced by her ex-husband to sign a mortgage contract.

She was later advised by her bank to take loan-protection insurance despite being a single mother on Centrelink benefits. She wasn’t offered an interpreter by the bank.

She was hospitalised after being stabbed 10 times in the spine by her ex-husband. Her insurer didn’t recognise her injuries as ‘trauma’ and rejected her claim – putting her at risk of losing her home.

After SECL stepped in, insurance premiums were refunded and a ‘goodwill’ payment was made to the client. Her mortgage repayments were lowered, and some debt was waived.

Another mum arrived at SECL seeking emergency food and rent relief. Staff looked to the causes of her plight, and found she was subjected to ongoing financial, physical and emotional abuse at home.

She and her child were found safe accommodation and schooling, with the help of 20 agencies.

Townhouse safety ‘goodwill’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong Council has negotiated for safety improvements at a controversial townhouse project in Keysborough.

After a safety review, the council met with developer Salter Brothers in a “spirit of good will and collaboration”, a council meeting was told on 15 November.

As a result, Salter Brothers agreed to implement five modifications “over and above the planning scheme” to the Keysborough Townhouses site at 452 Cheltenham Road, chief executive John Bennie reported.

Safety concerns had been raised about the siting of the estate’s Lot 1, standing about a metre from a truck slip lane and access road into the nearby HomeCo shopping centre.

As a result, there’s no room for a footpath along the access road to link the Cheltenham Road bus stop and a child care centre and shops at HomeCo. Among the changes listed by Mr Bennie was an “enhanced pedestrian management” construction along the access road and western edge of the townhouses.

Salter Brothers would also provide additional landscaping between the estate and road. It would be planted to council requirements with council-listed species, Mr Bennie said.

The developer would arrange removal “in the near future” of a roadside lamp post that stands centimetres from the western corner Lot 1’s upper balcony.

There were also “two more points” under discussion, he said.

Councillor Rhonda Garad said the changes “sound good but the devil’s in the detail”.

She said no detail had been provided on the pedestrian-safety “construction”. It needed to be “something substantial” and “not just lines painted on a road”, she said.

Mr Bennie said that according to the review, all planning permits were appropriately and lawfully issued.

The development was also found compliant with the planning scheme.

It had “in every respect” met “statutory obligations, standards and requirements”, Mr Bennie said.

The Lot 1 position was cast in an amended permit approved by a council officer in 2018.

The amendment was neither advertised to the public or put in front of Greater Dandenong councillors.

In recent months, South East Community Links was part of a response to Covid vaccination “fears and misinformation” running across the South East.

In partnership with Monash Health and local councils, SECL ran a Covid vaccination information program with five bicultural workers in South Sudanese, Afghan, Burmese, Vietnamese and Tamil communities.

Through info sessions, Facebook posts and group vaccinations, the program reached more than 3000 people.

“It has been a success and many potentially wouldn’t have been otherwise vaccinated,” SECL chief executive Peter McNamara said.

Many reported being unable to otherwise get to vax clinics due to not having transport.

Others didn’t have access to official information and had their questions answered at the information sessions.

“In our first group vaccination, some people attended to have a look; once they were there, they ended up taking part and getting their jabs,” SECL’s annual report stated.

“Having interpreters present and being in a group, with peer support, has made the difference for so many people getting vaccinated.”

‘System fails’

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong father-of-five who robbed at knifepoint a Facebook Marketplace seller outside their home has been urged to “work it” because “the system isn’t going to work for you”.

Hayden Wittekind, 26, pleaded guilty to armed robbery and disqualified driving at the Victorian County Court.

Appearing for his 16th court case, Wittekind had an extensive criminal history for dishonesty, violence, drugs and serious driving offences.

This included nine previous counts of disqualified driving. He’d spent eight of the past nine years in custody. In that time, his longest time in the community was two months.

Seven weeks after his latest release, Wittekind enquired on 8 June about a pair of headphones advertised by the victim for $400.

Identifying himself as ‘Marcus’, Wittekind arranged to meet outside the victim’s Northcote home about 7pm.

He drove over, parked nearby and arrived in a hooded jacket and a Covid face mask.

After a first inspection, Wittekind went back to the car. When he returned he threatened the victim with a knife and fled with the headphones. “You’ve got a choice – you follow me or you don’t,” Wittekind told him.

At the time, Wittekind was disqualified from driving for four years. He was arrested at Dalgety Street, Dandenong and remanded in custody. On 11 November, sentencing judge John Carmody noted that Wittekind’s planned armed robbery was at the low end of a serious offence.

Wittekind had breached every opportunity to reform on community correction orders or at the Drug Court, Judge Carmody said.

A jail term with parole was the only appropriate sentence, Judge Carmody said.

On the back of a deprived, abusive childhood, Wittekind had diagnosed post-traumatic stress and long-term drug addiction that fuelled his criminality.

“The comments you made to me at the end of the plea the other day showed to me some great insight by you, if you’re fair dinkum.

“Hold onto that insight, even though you’ve got time in front of you in jail and stick to it on your release. Unfortunately as you know from own experience, the system isn’t going to work for you. You’ll have to work it.

“You’re a young man, you’re only 26. You’ve got many years in front of you to enjoy life – so all the best.”

Wittekind was jailed for up to two years, four months. He’ll be eligible for parole after 18 months. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Church van stolen

By Marcus Uhe The St Mary’s Catholic Parish in Dandenong has been dealt a crushing blow after their food donation van was stolen, dumped and declared a write-off.

A trailer, with $1000 worth of food donations, was also taken but is yet to be located.

The van and trailer belonging to the church contained food donations from local organisations to be collected by members of the community from the church on Foster Street, in conjunction with the St Vincent de Paul Society’s Dandenong branch.

St Vincent de Paul volunteer and church member Joe Van Es was taking a short break from collecting donations when he discovered the van was missing early on Friday afternoon, 12 November.

“I delivered some food to St Mary’s and then drove to my house, went inside, and left the vehicle parked out the front,” Joe told the Star Journal.

“I went back 20 minutes later and the vehicle was gone.”

Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit and Dandenong uniform police arrested a male and a female in Springvale a short time later.

The male was charged with theft of motor vehicle, handling stolen goods, committing an indictable offence whilst on bail and various driving offences.

He was remanded in custody.

The female is expected to be charged with theft of motor vehicle and committing an indictable offence whilst on bail.

The white 1985 Toyota HiAce suffered significant damage to the windscreen and the front left side of the vehicle.

“The bull bar, bumper bar and front panel was dinted, and the body of the vehicle was twisted,” Joe said.

“The door on the left hand side is squashed and the roof has buckled just above the door.”

The van had been used by the church since 1985 to distribute food, clothing and furniture for those in need in the Dandenong district.

“On average I put out roughly a tonne of food each week,” Joe said.

“I put it on the shelves and people just come along to take it.

“I get about 200-300 loaves of bread, and there’s pallets of fruit and vegetables.”

Joe has asked members of the public to keep an eye out for the trailer.

“It’s a black two-wheel trailer, three metres long by 1.8 metres wide, and it has ‘St Vincent de Paul’ welded onto the towbar,” Joe said.

Man charged after Dandenong stabbing A man has been charged after another man was seriously injured in an alleged stabbing in Orgill Street, Dandenong.

Police say that the two men and a woman, all known to each other, were in a dispute on the street on Tuesday 16 November about 6.20pm.

The 37-year-old victim, from Dandenong, was taken to hospital, police say.

A 20-year-old Dandenong man and a 28-year-old woman, of no fixed address, were arrested at the scene without incident.

The man was charged with intentionally causing serious injury.

He was expected to front Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 17 November.

The woman was charged with offences unrelated to the incident, including breaching a court order.

She was expected to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 17 November.

Diamond scammer Detectives have honed in on a man from Melbourne’s South Eastern suburbs who allegedly stole more than $1.4 million from three victims in a series of elaborate diamond scams.

The 42 year-old man was arrested and charged by detectives from the Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit recently, after allegedly conning his victims over a four year period.

It is alleged the man approached his victims claiming to own a diamond mine in Sierra Leone, offering victims the opportunity to invest in the mine. Once an initial sum was paid, the offender allegedly asked for equipment and various gifts for his employees before on-selling items received in an offshore shop.

The three victims collectively lost more than $1.4 million, with each victim reported to have lost between $100,000 to more than $1 million as a result of the alleged scam, which occurred between September 2017 and October 2021.

The 42 year-old man was recently arrested and charged with 150 deception related offences, including obtaining property by deception.

He has been bailed to appear before the Melbourne Committal Court on Wednesday 2 February 2022.

Detective Senior Sergeant Jason Venturoni urged community members to be wary of scams and con artists, as they were incredibly deceptive and took both a financial and psychological toll on the victim.

“Criminals involved in the deception of others are often convincing and take advantage of people’s trust to exploit others for their own financial gain,” Det. Sen. Sgt. Venturoni said. “The community can rest assured that Victoria Police will leave no stone unturned investigating online scams and frauds, given they often leave a significant psychological and financial impact on the victim.”

He encouraged anyone who felt they may have been targeted by scammers to reach out to police and seek assistance.

“Victims are often left feeling a wide range of emotions including anger, helplessness and humiliation - but it is important to know that no victim is to blame, and help is available,” he said.

“If you believe you are the victim of deception, we urge you to contact your local police station.”

Recycling fuel for fire sparks community smoke warning

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A community advice warning was issued after a large fire “ripped through” a recycling facility in Dandenong South.

FRV and CFA crews responded to an automatic alarm at the Cleanaway premises at Thomas Murrell Crescent about 2.35am on Saturday 20 November.

“Upon arrival, crews found a significant amount of recycling materials were alight, with large flames and smoke issuing from the premise,” an FRV spokesperson said.

“The fire had ripped through a building on the site.”

More than 18 FRV firefighters were involved in the operation, which included machinery pulling apart rubbish to “break up the fuel load”.

Pumper appliances hosed down the flames with water.

Environment Protection Authority Victoria staff also attended. WorkSafe and City of Greater Dandenong were notified, the FRV spokesperson said.

“The community advice warning has been issued for smoke in the area.”

Airbnb party brawl ‘highly dangerous’ Six youths from the South East have faced sentence for their part in a “highly dangerous” armed brawl in a lift in a CBD apartment highrise.

Their large group attacked young men in the lift at a 19th birthday party in a Spencer Street apartment hired from the Airbnb app.

During the melee in the early hours of Monday 8 March, there were “waves” of attacks in which several males were sliced by knives as well as punched and kicked.

One of the offenders was critically injured after being slashed several times to the torso.

Three victims were treated in hospital, including a man whose hand was sliced eight centimetres deep.

“The conduct of all of those involved was deplorable,” County Court of Victoria judge Richard Maidment said in sentencing on 10 November.

“You all were extremely fortunate that none of you were killed or suffered serious longterm injuries.

“Indeed you should also consider yourselves fortunate no one else was killed by your collective offending.”

It was a “highly dangerous, violent” confrontation, Judge Maidment said.

“With some of you using knives you could all easily have been facing a charge of murder.”

Keak Diu, 20, of Langwarrin, Taban Kor, 20, of Dandenong North, Moses Laula, 20, of Doveton, Samer Nimir, 18, of Dandenong North, and Gatwech Pal, 19, of Clyde North, pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court to violent disorder.

Laula and Pal were further charged with being armed with criminal intent, Diu with possession of a controlled weapon.

Goch Akok, 20, of Dandenong pleaded guilty to affray.

None of the victims or offenders except Kor gave a statement to police. Several of them gave false stories of being jumped while walking in Hoppers Crossing.

Several knives and blood-stained areas were found at the scene.

footage, as well as mobile phone videos that show an armed Pal and Laula stabbing at the group in the lift.

The person who shot the videos are heard chanting “NGS” – which stands for the gang Next Gen Shooters, Judge Maidment said. He made no findings on whether the offenders were part of NGS. Another person is heard repeatedly yelling: “Stab them.”

“It was calculated to terrify any law-abiding citizen who might have been caught up in or witnessed the incident,” Judge Maidment said of the attack.

“The volume and aggression in the voices of those involved in the melee would have echoed through the building.”

The judge noted his sentences must also strike a balance with the offenders’ young ages and prospects for rehabilitation.

“I wish all the offenders well for the future of their rehabilitation and hopefully all of you will make fine citizens in due course.”

Diu was jailed for 243 days – already served – plus an 18-month community corrections order.

Namir was jailed for 32 days – already served – with a 20-month CCO, including up to 180 hours of unpaid work.

Pal and Laula were respectively detained for a further 10 months, 24 days and 12 months on top of their current sentences in a youth justice centre.

Kor will perform up to 120 hours of unpaid work as part of an 18-month CCO. Akok was put on an 18-month CCO, including up to 70 hours’ community work.

Illegal hunters sprung A Noble Park man is among seven men caught allegedly hunting deer illegally in the Mansfield and Jamieson region.

The 48-year-old man is expected to be charged on summons after being detected as part of a three-day police operation in “illegal spotlighting hotspots” in the high country between 11-13 November.

Three of the men were from Mooroolbark, one from Dallas, one from Hadfield and another from Guildford, NSW. Police seized six firearms, seven spotlights and ammunition during the operation.

Six of the seven alleged offenders have had their firearms licences suspended while the seventh person was unlicenced.

Police say the men were likely to be charged with weapon offences such as prohibited person possess firearm, possess loaded firearm in public place, and fail to

correctly store longarms and ammunition.

Other offences include the possession of spotlight and firearm in recognised deer habitat and breaches of Wildlife Game Regulations.

Staff from Game Management Authority (GMA) and Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) assisted the operation.

Mansfield Acting Senior Sergeant Geoff Hutchison said authorities “braved the rain and horrible weather conditions”.

“However it was undoubtedly worth spending three nights in the challenging high country conditions to apprehend seven hunters allegedly committing a multitude of offences.

Two people have been arrested after allegedly stealing a church bus containing $1000 of food donations.

The bus, with its food for those in need, was stolen from St Mary’s Catholic Church in Dandenong on 12 November, police say.

It was involved in a crash in Springvale about 4.20pm on Monday 15 November.

A man and woman fled from the bus.

They were found and arrested by Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit and uniform officers in Springvale a short time later.

Mr Cook says Victoria Police, which has yet to conclude its fourth investigation into the corruption claims, “continues to fail” him and his staff.

Three separate investigations by Casey, Greater Dandenong and Moorabbin CIU detectives had previously closed without any charges laid.

A leaked police brief in June 2020 recommended further investigation “to identify alleged corruption or misuse of office”.

A State Parliamentary inquiry has twice examined the closure. It concluded that police were better placed to investigate alleged corruption.

Mr Cook’s Supreme Court civil action against the Department of Health and Greater Dandenong remains afoot.

An allegedly drunk learner driver has been charged after fleeing a crash in central Dandenong. The 39-year-old Dandenong woman had been involved in the collision on Clow Street about 3.30pm on Wednesday 17 November. She was found hiding in bushes on Stud Road by SD3 Frontline Tactical Unit police officers.

She was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, careless driving, learner unaccompanied, fail to stop and render assistance, exceed the prescribed concentration of alcohol and possess cannabis.

She was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 11 February.

Covid-19 vaccination rates in the Dandenong postcode continue to lag behind the rest of the council area. Less than 80 per cent of residents 12-and-over in the 3175 postcode have been fully vaccinated, according to official data up to 16 November.

It lags behind Greater Dandenong’s overall rate of 85.4 per cent and Casey 92 per cent.

Surrounding postcodes have topped 80 per cent, including the previously hesitant Doveton, Hallam, Hampton Park and Endeavour Hills postcodes. Noble Park and Keysborough are over 85 per cent, Lyndhurst over 90 per cent and Springvale and Springvale South postcodes have surpassed 95 per cent.

Covid infections continue to rise in the South East – but at a less alarming rate. Greater Dandenong recorded 252 new cases in the past week, including 72 on 21 November.

As a sign of a slowing infection spread, the council area’s active cases plummeted to 406 – down from more than 1900 on 29 October.

In Casey, there have been 439 infections during the week, including 76 in the past day.

Active cases dropped to 720 after a peak of more than 2600.

Postcode hotspots are Dandenong (46 new daily cases, 225 active), Cranbourne (25, 197), Fountain Gate (12, 137), Noble Park (10, 73) and Hampton Park (8, 90).

Dandenong North Primary School and Dandenong South Primary School are listed with active clusters. Minaret College’s campuses in Officer and Springvale as well as Lyndhurst Primary School and Dandenong South Primary School are listed with active clusters.

CBD shisha bar gets tick

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Greater Dandenong councillors have voted for alcohol being served at a shisha lounge in central Dandenong - despite opposing such venues in the recent past.

The venue at 24 Langhorne Street sought an amended permit to add a bar during the same opening hours and for the same number of patrons. At a council meeting on 15 November, Cr Sean O’Reilly said it was not the role of council to “implement social policy ad hoc” but to assess planning applications “on its merits”.

In opposition, councillor Bob Milkovic was concerned about the mix of younger males, violence and alcohol in the CBD. “We know the problems associated with

alcohol in central Dandenong. We don’t need another venue offering alcohol for young males in central Dandenong.

“If it was a restaurant… that’s another thing.”

The council had recently rejected a rooming house in Dandenong “based on the same fears”, Cr Milkovic said.

A council planning officer’s report stated that the bar complied with planning rules and would “contribute to the vitality of Langhorne Street”.

“The use of the land as a Bar will encourage an increase in the businesses patronage and visitation to the activity centre.”

The venue would have “negligible” impact on alcohol-related harms, with “no adverse

community safety implications”, the report stated. The most likely impacts were noise and patron behaviour, but it was not close to dwellings.

The bar would be required to stop serving alcohol at midnight - an hour before closure - on Friday-Sunday nights to reduce potential alcohol-related issues.

There was a “saturation point” of more than 15 licensed premises within 500 metres but most were less-risky BYO venues, the report stated.

In planning terms, the shisha lounge had to be considered as a “place of assembly”.

“Any potential concerns with the interaction of a shisha lounge and bar cannot be considered, and rather it is the interaction of

a place of assembly and bar that can be considered.”

The report stated it was “highly likely” that the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal would issue the amended permit if initially rejected by the council.

In 2020 and 2021, the council opposed two shisha lounge permits on public health and amenity grounds.

But in both cases, VCAT ruled that “public health” grounds were irrelevant.

It was not the role of the planning system to “effectively outlaw” a “legal and legitimate activity” in Greater Dandenong, it stated.

Greater Dandenong Council has lobbied for the regulation of smoking shisha in 2013 and 2015.

IKEA powers ahead with EV charging stations Free electric-vehicle charging stations have been installed at IKEA’s Springvale store.

The store’s marketing manager Julian Pertile said the four car-park stations aimed to encourage customers and staff to “take climate action into their own hands”.

“With more Victorians back on the road, we’re happy to provide electric vehicles chargers in a convenient location for those who require it.”

The charging stations will be free to use and open 24/7. They come with a Type 2 cable.

There is also space to install extra chargers in the future if electric vehicle take-up

increases in the future.

IKEA has a stated aim of cutting emissions from staff and customer travel to stores by 50 per cent by 2030.

It was also committed to 100 per cent electric-vehicle or zero-emission vehicles for customer deliveries by 2025, Mr Pertile said.

‘New Oasis’ design Draft design plans have been released for Dandenong’s new aquatic centre.

The public are invited to have their say on the plans for the $82.3 million Dandenong Wellbeing Centre at JC Mills Reserve on Cleeland Street.

It will replace the 40-plus-year-old Dandenong Oasis and be built at the existing hockey pavilion site at the reserve.

The two-storey centre uniquely combines allied-health services and recreation such as 50-metre indoor pool, warm-water pools and a gym.

There are two separate pool halls for active and passive aquatic activities.

The main pool hall includes a 50-metre, eight-lane pool with ramp access, a learn to swim pool and a leisure pool with water-play features.

A moveable swim wall can resize the main pool for 25-metre or half-25 use.

The warm-water pool hall would have two warm-water pools – six times larger than the warm-water facilities at Oasis.

An operable wall can also provide privacy when required, such as for women’s-only classes. Ramp, hoists and pool pods will be available to access the pools.

The hall also comprises a large spa, sauna and steam room.

A large gym and four group fitness program rooms will be upstairs.

There will also be an allied health facility, community meeting rooms, cafe, creche, foyer, amenities and public plaza.

An integrated sports pavilion will also be built for the neighbouring synthetic sports fields.

Two rounds of community consultation and planning identified the need to focus on health, passive activity, education, fitness and wellness, according to Greater Dandenong Council.

Springvale drug raid Three people were arrested during an alleged drug raid by police at a Springvale premises.

SD3 Divisional Response Unit officers seized illicit drugs believed to be heroin, cannabis and methylamphetamine at the Wales Street property from about 5pm on Thursday 18 November.

Police also seized methadone, cash alleged as proceeds of crime, and phones and an iPad allegedly used for drug trafficking.

A 38-year-old Springvale woman and a 38-year-old Springvale man were charged with drug trafficking, drug possession, dealing with proceeds of crime and other related charges.

The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court, the woman bailed to appear at the court in February.

A 21-year-old Springvale man was issued with a cannabis caution and released.

Born in Malawi, Ms Luka often says her heart is in South Sudan as she works closely with the south-eastern South Sudanese community.

Afri-Aus Care was born of her experiences when she arrived in Australia, where she experienced difficulties and hardship in her first years in the country.

The not-for-profit provides mental health

support, outreach and skills development for members of the African and CALD communities.

It works closely with youth offenders, providing them with a pathway out of these behaviours and into a more positive contribution to society. During the pandemic for example, ex-offenders helped create food hampers and deliver these to the most vulnerable in society.

Afri-Aus Care also works with “the mamas“,

African women who are new to Australia and need assistance to find employment and learn English. Many of these women are survivors of domestic abuse, and Afri-Aus Care provides mental health support too as they build a new life.

Speaking at the Australia Day ceremony, Ms Luka said she was honoured to have received such a prestigious award.

“May we continue to be united. Dandenong is a great city to be,“ she said.

Walking for the ‘wise’ The heart-break from losing a loved one to senseless violence is felt all too often by staff at a Dandenong funeral home.

Le Pine Funerals Dandenong has joined the Pat Cronin Foundation’s Be Wise Walk – to help campaign against the ‘coward punch’.

Pat Cronin was just 19 when he was killed after being coward-punched from behind at a pub in April 2016.

His family created the Pat Cronin Foundation to end such senseless acts of violence.

And to remind people to be ‘wise’, think carefully and act kindly when out and about.

Pat’s father and foundation director Matt Cronin said Le Pine’s support started from the “darkest time” in arranging Pat’s funeral.

“Their care and attention to our needs cannot be underestimated so it seems only natural to extend on these traits to a formal partnership with the Pat Cronin Foundation.

“Partnerships such as this allow us to con-

tinue to provide fully funded Be Wise presentations to schools and clubs.

“We look forward to working with the Le Pine team as we spread our Be Wise message to end the coward punch.”

Le Pine regional director Ashley Crow said arranging funerals for someone who died as a result of a preventable incident was “one of the toughest things we have to do”.

“My team and I are heartbroken when we see lives cut short due to senseless violence.

“We see the grief of their families, friends and loved ones first-hand, and I can tell you it never gets easier.

“That’s why we are stepping up our support for the Pat Cronin Foundation to do our part in creating a world free from senseless violence like the coward punch.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Thrill-seekers are having a blast at the spectacular $2.5 million All-Abilities playground in Ross Reserve.

The regional attraction is designed for inclusive fun for children and adults of all ages and sizes.

It includes a double-run flying fox with an accessible harness seat, inclusive in-ground trampolines, an accessible ramp with slides, basket swings and climbing nets, and a tower with three giant slides and rope-net bridge.

There is also a five-bay swing frame with harness and sling seats, a Liberty swing and sandpit water play area.

The fenced playground is fully accessible with a circuit concrete path.

Former Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan initiated the project in 2013 after parents of disabled children highlighted there were no all-abilities playgrounds in Greater Dandenong.

“Feedback from many residents, with children with a disability and without, was that many of our playgrounds were boring in comparison with other municipalities.

“This was a great opportunity to create the first mega-playground in Greater Dandenong.”

Stage 1 of the playground was officially opened by Premier and Mulgrave MP Daniel Andrews, Youth Minister Ros Spence and then-mayor Angela Long on 5 November.

It is joint funded by the State Government and City of Greater Dandenong.

Struggling with demand

By Gabriella Payne Victoria’s numerous lockdowns combatted the Covid-19 pandemic, but they have sadly seen another invisible threat take hold.

Cases of domestic violence have steadily increased in the past year, with local support services being pushed to the brink, receiving thousands of calls for help in Melbourne’s south east.

Even now that lockdown has ended, support services are struggling to keep up with demand, with a huge backlog of victims still stuck in a “state of paralysis” and in urgent need of more permanent help.

Robyn Roberts, the General Manager at

family violence and housing support service WAYSS, said that they had witnessed a record number of victims reaching out for help since the pandemic had taken hold.

“We know family violence is the biggest cause of homelessness for women and children, and during the pandemic women and children have been escaping unsafe situations and coming to WAYSS in larger numbers than ever before,” Ms Roberts said.

“Last financial year we had more than 8,500 family violence reports referred to WAYSS, a 4 per cent increase on the previous financial year.

“Even though the last lockdown has ended,

there is still a large backlog of cases from lockdown to deal with. Our family violence refuges are full and many of our families are not moving because there is nowhere for them to move to,” she said.

Ms Roberts said that with “very few suitable housing options” on the market at the moment, many victims sadly remained “in a state of paralysis – stuck in a constant state of crisis, with few options to move on and start improving their lives and no end in sight”.

“There is just not enough affordable housing stock for people on low incomes, especially those who are dependent on government benefits,” she said.

“As a result, people end up staying in short term crisis accommodation and other substandard living environments because there is no other option.

“This is incredibly stressful and dehumanising for people who deserve more.”

Ms Roberts said that urgent action needed to be taken to fix the current housing crisis and help those in need.

Despite their high volume of callers and the current crisis, Ms Roberts encouraged anyone experiencing domestic violence to reach out and get help, whether it be through WAYSS, Orange Door or by contacting police in the case of emergencies.

Like other family violence response centres in Melbourne, Safe Steps have noticed an alarming trend in the local area - there’s not enough safe and affordable housing to go around.

With record numbers of people fleeing violence, there’s a desperate need for housing now more than ever, as many are at risk of homelessness if the situation continues to worsen.

Rita Butera, the CEO of Safe Steps said that there was no doubt that the housing situation in the south east had become a huge crisis, and something needed to be done urgently to help vulnerable victims.

“Safe Steps is receiving record numbers of calls from women experiencing family violence and friends, family and colleagues worried about their safety who need assistance with safety planning, risk assessment - and for 100 women and children each night, emergency accommodation, because they are at high risk of harm,” Ms Butera said.

“The lack of affordable housing is the biggest issue facing women and children who are rebuilding their lives after escaping family violence.

“We need more emergency accommodation and more housing for families establishing a future free from family violence,” she said.

Providing an all hours service for those in need, the team at Safe Steps have seen the impacts of this crisis firsthand.

Ms Butera said that many of these victims still remained at risk and that more housing was desperately needed.

“At our service – Victoria’s 24/7 family violence crisis centre – about 30 per cent of women and children who leave our emergency accommodation are referred to homelessness services, because they are unable to get a private rental and there are simply not enough public housing options,” she said.

“This often results in victim-survivors returning to unsafe situations through a lack of viable options.

“There are not enough refuge places available in the time of crisis and we need more transitional housing.”

Ms Butera said that the Safe Steps team would continue to work tirelessly to support those in need, and she encouraged community members to raise their voices and join their ‘Walk Against Family Violence’ on Thursday 25 November to raise awareness.

The ‘Walk Against Family Violence’ is a local walk from home, where people wear something orange and share a picture to social media using the hashtags #WhyWeWalk #WAFV2021.

The Noble Park Early Parenting Centre’s future look.

Parenting centre facelift New designs have been unveiled for the expanding Noble Park Early Parenting Centre.

The 53 Thomas Street centre’s upgraded exterior, native gardens and internal fit-outs were released by Health Minister Martin Foley and Keysborough MP Martin Pakula.

“The ‘nature-inspired’ designs for the Noble Park Early Parenting Centre upgrade will create a safe and calming environment for families who need a little extra help to ensure their children get the best start in life,” Mr Foley said.

Mr Pakula said the design was shaped by input from local residents, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations and health experts to “ensure it reflects our local area and the families it serves”.

local area and the families it serves.”

The facility, operated by Queen Elizabeth Centre, will provide parents and carers with advice and support on issues such as sleep and settling, feeding and extra care for babies with additional needs.

Sleep and settling is reportedly one of the biggest challenges for new parents.

More than one in two Victorian parents who attend early parenting centres report problems with their child’s sleep.

This can lead to post-natal depression, isolation and stress for parents and impact on a child’s behavioural, mental and physical development.

Two new standard residential units and two new accessible residential units as well as supporting services will be added to the centre.

Construction is expected to start in early 2022, with completion by early 2023.

Braeside Park upgrades The popular Braeside Park is getting a makeover as part of a $21 million State-funded program.

The park’s Telford picnic area will get upgraded picnic tables and shelters, drinking fountains, barbecues, toilets and signage as well as minor road repairs.

The tables and toilets will be accessible to people of all-abilities.

Keysborough MP Martin Pakula said visits to Braeside Park in the past 15 years increased from 200,000 to more than 800,000 in 2021.

“We understand the community loves the park as it is so we’re focusing on upgrading

the current facilities so that they continue to offer locals what they want, while improving accessibility and catering for increasing visitation.”

The works follow Park Victoria’s extensive community consultation with 1100 participants in 2019 and 2020.

Feedback included a general desire to keep the park as is, with small improvements to its facilities.

Red Centre Nominees has been appointed to undertake the works.

We’re building big in Melbourne’s south east As part of Victoria’s Big Build, we’re investing in major road and rail projects near you.

The Cranbourne and Pakenham lines will be completely free of level crossings by 2025, paving the way for safer travel and more trains to run more often.

We’re also upgrading the Cranbourne Line by adding eight kilometres of track and building new rail bridges at Abbotts Road and Eumemmerring Creek to make room for trains to pass. This will allow trains to run every 10 minutes when the Metro Tunnel opens.

We’ve completed the removal of five level crossings on the Frankston Line at Chelsea, Bonbeach and Edithvale. In total, 20 level crossings are being removed and 13 new stations are being built along the line.

The Monash Freeway Upgrade will change the way you access the freeway. The Jacksons Road entry ramp will connect you directly to EastLink. While the Police Road outbound entry ramp will connect you to the Monash Freeway.

Huge improvements are coming to some of the busiest and most congested roads across the south east. Construction on the South Road Upgrade, between Nepean Highway and Warrigal Road, will make it safer for drivers and reduce congestion for the 40,000 people who use the road every day.

The new nine kilometre Mordialloc Freeway is now open! The freeway links the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Dingley Bypass saving drivers up to seven minutes during the morning peak.

While we work, road and public transport disruptions could affect your travel Over summer, there’ll be major road works on the West Gate Bridge, West Gate Freeway and Monash Freeway. Interfaith founder’s award A “no nonsense” founding member of Greater Dandenong’s ground-breaking interfaith network has been recognised at the 2021 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards.

Agnes Kean, 77, from Springvale, was awarded the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Victoria Senior Achiever Award for her 32-year contribution to the network.

As a member of the Baha’i community, Ms Kean has been a volunteer at Australia’s first interfaith network since 1989.

She has helped promote peace and harmony through understanding, respect and acceptance of others from all walks of life.

“Agnes is highly respected for her genuine

manner in the way she welcomes and accepts others from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds,” according to a statement from the awards.

“Agnes promotes respect and tolerance for the integrity of others beliefs, cultures and traditions.

“Her no nonsense, no fuss attitude has seen her resiliently push through with her volunteer commitments whilst meeting a few of life’s challenges along the way.”

Ms Kean has also been a contributor to Star Journal’s Message of Hope weekly feature during the Covid pandemic.

The Senior of the Year awards recognise

people for their “assistance, support and encouragement” in their communities.

They have run for more than 25 years.

The awards are part of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing’s annual Victorian Seniors Festival.

Tributes paid to leader Greater Dandenong’s Baha’i community is set to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of the faith’s leader Abdu’l-Baha on 28 November.

His funeral in 1921 was said to be “unprecedented” in scale, Local Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’i’s of Greater Dandenong spokesperson Rowena Eghanian said.

Jews, Christians and Muslims from a wide diversity of backgrounds gathered to pay their respects in then-Palestine.

“They knew him in various capacities – as one who had saved countless lives from starvation during the First World War, had cared for the poor, and had served as the highest example of a life of service.

“His service to humanity was exemplary.”

He warned Europe was on the brink of war. In 1912, he accurately predicted a “spark will set ablaze the whole of Europe”

in two years’ time.

During World War I he arranged for surplus grain supplies to be brought to his famine-stricken Akka-Haifa region.

His efforts were rewarded with a knighthood by the British Empire.

Tackling school refusals

By Melissa Grant For many students, going to school is simple.

They have breakfast, put their uniform on and go.

However some students find attending school difficult and struggle with what’s called ‘school refusal’.

In its simplest form, school refusal is when a student can’t go to school. They don’t want to be there and will show features of emotional distress such as headaches or stomach aches.

Prolonged lockdowns in Victoria have led to more families experiencing school refusal.

Before the pandemic, an estimated 2-5 per cent of students were school refusing. It’s estimated those rates tripled when school returned between lockdowns.

Education expert Dr Lisa McKay-Brown says school refusal can happen at any point, but can be linked to periods of transition. It also seems to be more prevalent between Years 5 and 9.

This is because of shifts in friendship groups and increased challenges of schooling at this time, according to Dr McKay-Brown who is part of the learning intervention team at Melbourne University.

She says there are usually warning signs for parents.

“Often you’ll hear things like ‘I don’t feel well today’, ‘I have a headache or a stomach ache, I don’t think I can face it’. Generally the symptoms subside if they don’t have to go to school,” she said.

She said children may also negotiate about going to school by asking to be picked up early, or struggle to get out of bed, the house or the car.

So what can you do if your child is school refusing?

Dr McKay-Brown suggests the following: Have conversations with your child to get a better sense of what is happening. Ask questions like ‘how are you feeling about school?’ and ‘are there some things that are difficult for you at school?’

Communicate with your child’s school. You don’t want absences to continue so let the school know what’s happening and ask them if they have any support or advice School relationships. Relationships are important when returning to school. What check-ins can be organised? Is there a way of having peer connections maintained?

Seek professional support. A GP is your first point of call. They will determine if there needs to be some kind of mental health referral. Starting this process is important given the long wait times to see mental health professionals.

Maintain school routines. If you are at home it’s important to maintain the routine of a school day. Get your child out of bed, get them sitting at the table when it’s class time and keep them from more pleasurable activities such as gaming. If you are going to go for a walk do it in recess time.

Self-care. Parents need to think about their own self-care. They may need to seek support and family counselling can be helpful as school refusal is something that can impact the family unit.

The good news is that with the right support, young people who are school refusing can return to the classroom.

“It’s not forever - we know we can get young people back to school, it just takes time and it takes working on it,” Dr McKay-Brown said.

Young people experiencing school refusal can struggle to get out of bed. holidays can also be particularly challenging, with children becoming clingy or tearful.

In these situations, Dr McKay-Brown said it was important to note that school refusal might just be one of the things going on.

“Research shows around 50 per cent of children presenting with school refusal have a mental health disorder,” she said.

Dr McKay-Brown said while there is anecdotal evidence that school refusal rates had tripled since the pandemic, more research is taking place.

“It’s been a time of high stress,” she explained.

“I think some people who may have been at risk of school refusal before the remote learning experience, for them it (remote learning)

became an experience that the feelings of anxiety and worry when they had to go to school lessened.”

She said parents and schools had to be careful when considering remote learning or home schooling as a solution to school refusal.

“Anecdotally we find that young people who are school refusing are less likely to engage in those types of learning situations,” she said.

It’s important to address school refusal. In the short-term, school refusal can impact on a young person’s education, learning and peer relationships. Leaving school altogether can have long-term impacts as the young person won’t achieve their educational potential. Any mental health issues that aren’t address can have impacts into adulthood.

100 years ago 17 November 1921 Town Hall Conveniences Being just a recent arrival in Dandenong I am what one might call still “having a look around”. Whilst reading down your columns of last issue my attention was drawn to a letter on the above. Now, I know nothing about the cleanliness of these places or whether the members of the ALP just happened to strike a time when these had been abused, but a point which I think ought to have come under the notice of the council is the close proximity of each of these conveniences, and the fact that there has been no provision made for lighting at that particular corner.

50 years ago 18 November 1971 From Ballet to top Police Job Superintendent Leonard Bell retires from the Victorian Police force after a 39½ year career.

Supt Bell has been at Dandenong headquarters since 1968 and is in charge of Flinders police district. He celebrates his 60th birthday in December and a testimonial dinner has been arranged at the Southern Aurora Hotel, Dandenong. Supt Len, a genial distinguished redhead, stands 6ft 11in tall and carries his sixty summers with athletic grace and ease.

He is an interesting conversationalist, well read, with a wealth of happy memories and a keenness for meticulous details. He retained an interest in theatre and was a professional dancer with J C Williamson before his policing career. “I danced with Bobby Helpman (now Sir Robert) and my last appearances was in Noel Coward’s ‘This Year of Graces’ at the old Theatre Royal in Bourke St.”

She said the project was part of the Rapid Housing Assistance Program. “We are providing more support to ensure those in need have access to housing and targeted assistance to get back on their feet,” she said.

Dancing for older Australians: Get in step, give it a whirl The health benefits of dancing for seniors range from improving your physical health to creating strong social connections that increase your sense of wellbeing.

A 2018 study by the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) showed a positive relationship between dancing and the physical and emotional health of older Australians.

Participants in the study experienced improved flexibility, boosted energy levels and better posture. Further studies have found that dancing can slow or even reverse the signs of ageing in the brain.

Among these benefits, older Australians are likely to experience an improvement in balance,

coordination and spatial awareness, which in turn could reduce their likelihood of falls.

Dancing also provides an increase in heart rate, encouraging the movement of oxygen throughout the body. This has shown positive effects on heart and lung condition, and has the potential to lessen the risk of conditions such as cardiovascular disease. Regular dance also assists in weight management, toning muscle, improving strength and reducing joint pain.

The benefits of dancing aren’t just physical.

Regular dancing has been shown to increase the size of the hippocampus, which is the region of the brain responsible for spatial navigation and memory formation.

Not only did study participants enjoy a range of physical and mental progress, they also experienced a shift in overall mood, selfesteem and confidence. This is attributed to a combination of the effects of physical exercise and the social interactions and connections formed during the dance classes.

Some things to consider Are you looking to dance on your own or with a partner? Perhaps you’d like to join a group dance class, or maybe you’d prefer private lessons. What sort of dance style are you looking to engage in? The options are endless. Ballet, line dancing, Latin or salsa dancing, waltzing, tap dancing, dance aerobics and even seated

dance classes are all popular styles you can choose from.

Before you pull on your dancing shoes, it’s important to consult your doctor or medical professional. They can provide you with proper advice tailored to your health needs.

Once you’ve got the go ahead, you should make sure that you hydrate properly before, during and after you dance. Warming up and cooling down is also crucial to avoid stiffness or injury.

Take care not to over work yourself on the dance floor. Remember, it’s all about getting active and having fun. Now get out there and bust a move!

Climate innovation win City of Greater Dandenong has taken out a national local-government award for its climate change self-assessment tool.

The council’s first-of-a-kind tool won the Innovation category at the Cities Power Partnership Awards – which recognizes “climate hero” local governments.

The tool is used to address climate change in asset and infrastructure project funding bids.

Greater Dandenong city planning director said the aim was to develop a “robust and straight-forward” tool to assess how well a project responds to climate change. “(It) provides a holistic assessment against 10 sustainability themes and assesses the contribution of a proposed capital improvement project towards Council’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions across all operations by 2025.”

Cities Power Partnership director Dr Portia Odell said the winning entry was a shining ex-

ample of innovation in a competitive field of entrants.

“Greater Dandenong’s initiative shows a commitment to embedding emissions reduction across all council processes, and it demonstrates the power of innovative thinking when it comes to reducing council emissions.”

The awards celebrated local governments’ achievements in renewable energy, energy efficiency, sustainable transport, community engagement and individual climate champions.

Dr Ordell said the awarded solutions were “tangible proof that Australian communities are rising up to meet the challenges of climate change”.

“The best part is that when one council finds a solution, many more can follow.”

“As we see through innovative renewable energy deals or novel ways to help the community transition to net zero emissions, this sector is leading the way with practical local climate solutions.”

The council ran a Dandenong Primary School climate-change consultation.

Cup heats provide thrills

By Peter Quilty (GRV) The Group 1 TAB Melbourne Cup is known as “the world’s greatest greyhound race”.

And Friday night’s eight heats (515m) at Sandown Park provided world-class racing!

Unquestionably, the ‘world-beaters’ were Lala Kiwi (Heat 8), Lakeview Walter (Heat 7) and Aston Rupee (Heat 4).

Lala Kiwi ($3.50), prepared by Victoria’s leading trainer Andrea Dailly, set the time standard with a slick 29.24sec victory.

The G3 Cranbourne Classic winner notched her 16th win from 37 starts. She was also a finalist in the G1 Topgun and G2 Cranbourne Cup. Trained by Monique Whelan, Lakeview Walter ($3.70) – who has battled wrist issues – returned to his brilliant best in 29.26sec.

Winner of the G1 Silver Chief, G3 Silver Bullet and G3 The Ambrosoli, Lakeview Walter registered his 11th win from 29 starts. He was also a finalist in the G1 Temlee and G1 Harrison-Dawson.

It’s said, “uneasy is the head that wears the crown” and there were some anxious moments for trainer Glenn Rounds with Australia’s No. 1 sprinter Aston Rupee ($1.50F).

But the superstar now gets his chance to join former champ Bombastic Shiraz as the only greyhound to win the ‘triple crown’ (Shootout, Topgun and Melbourne Cup) after a spellbinding 29.47sec win.

As they turned for home, racecaller Daniel Hibberd came into his own shouting: “Aston

Koblenz and Jepara after dead-heating in the Cup heats.

Rupee’s coming, he’s coming, he’ll get up and win”.

Holder of Sandown Park’s 515m track record (28.79sec), Aston Rupee recorded his 19th win from 32 starts. It was his eighth win from

his past nine starts and he’s six from six exiting Box 3.

He’s also won the G3 Bill Collins Speed Star (515m) and G3 Speed Star (525m) and was a G1 Adelaide Cup finalist and runner-up in the

G3 Launching Pad. You couldn’t have scripted a better start to the series when Koblenz ($1.30F) and Jepara ($11.30) dead-heated in Heat 1.

Hibberd exclaimed Koblenz had “fallen in by a pimple” – and he wasn’t far off the mark.

In the end Koblenz, trained by David Geall, and Jepara, prepared by Angela Langton, couldn’t be separated in 29.43sec.

Dubbed “Mr Reliable”, G2 Cranbourne Cup winner Koblenz notched his eighth win from his past nine starts. And he’s now eight from 10 exiting Box 2.

Jepara was finalist in the G1 Silver Chief and Victorian National Sprint Championship.

Other heat winners were Kinson Bale (29.47sec), Aussie Secret (29.57sec) Tiberia Bale (29.64) and Typhoon Sammy (29.65sec), with the latter demoted to first reserve as a result of the dead-heat.

Festival of cricket set for Casey Fields

By Nick Creely A festival of Twenty20 cricket is set to light up the local area, with the Aussie Cricket League set to launch at Casey Fields in December.

The new and exciting tournament is penned in for Monday 20 December until Friday 24 December, with four community-based international Melbourne sides, the Australia XI, Pakistan XI, India XI and Sri Lankan XI set to take part.

Aussie Cricket League organiser Harry Sandhu said it was the perfect opportunity for the Melbourne community to get a glimpse of some of Australia’s top community and international cricketers representing their country with pride, with plenty of high-profile players locked in, subject to travel restrictions.

“We’re trying to create a platform for our local stars, there’s so much talent in the community,” he said.

“We hope that this can help even get them to a higher level if they can play well.”

Sandhu said that there will be plenty of family-friendly entertainment across the week, with free entry.

“We’re expecting about 2,000 to 3,000 people a day, we’ll have food vans, entertainment, a live DJ, commentary, highlights on the big screen,” he said.

“We would love the community support, so come along and have plenty of fun.”

There will be a live telecast at Punjab TV Australia, YouTube and Social Media platforms, with Peter Lazer and Larry Ponting locked in as commentators.

Sandhu said there was plenty of excitement around the inaugural Twenty20 league, and hopes it can form the building blocks for expansion into the future.

He also added that there was an astonishing 400 applicants for the India XI squad, eventually narrowing it down to 18.

“We’re hopeful of expanding next year, we’re talking to someone in England about bringing over a County side, we’re talking to someone in New Zealand, and we hope to get a community Afghanistan team,” he said.

Mixed day for cricket

By Nick Creely Disappointment reigned across the region on the weekend, with the Dandenong District Cricket Association forced to cancel the opening round’s turf clashes.

After a rain-soaked week, the DDCA made the call on Thursday to postpone the Round 1 fixtures to a later date in the season, just a week after also having to make a similar call as wet-weather continued to lash the state.

In good news, however, for cricketstarved fans, synthetic matches were able to get a start to their respective seasons, with A Grade, B Grade, C Grade, D Grade and E Grade action kicking off across the region.

Some highlights across the association included Farhan Hussain’s 53 and 2/13 in A Grade for Buckley Ridges, Charlie Johnson’s astonishing 7/8 for Beaconsfield in B Grade, Sampath Rathnayake spanking 53 for Victorian Vikings in C Grade, Dandenong West skipper Faizan Rahim’s 62 in D Grade, and Ryan Gains dominating with 75 for Berwick in E Grade.

Turf cricket will now move onto Round 2 fixtures on Saturday, with a Turf 1 grand final replay between Hallam Kalora Park and Berwick set to draw significant interest. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au

Draft day looms for locals

By Tyler Lewis The NAB AFL Draft is upon us and with the nail-biting two nights comes a plethora of young prospects within the area that sit on the edge of their couches, hoping for their name to be called.

The Dandenong Stingrays’ best hope for a top ten pick is unequivocally Berwick junior, Mac Andrew.

The dynamic ruck moves like a midfielder at 202cm and has impressed with his ability to move like an additional on-baller after competing in the ruck.

Andrew is in the Melbourne Next Generation Academy, but he is unlikely to slip out of the top 12, let alone to the premiers’ first pick.

Andrew was the only Stingray to represent Australia in the AFL Academy in the annual match against a Victorian Football League (VFL) side.

While he is set to be called on the opening night of the Draft, Andrew is happy with wherever he plays, as he is just hoping to inspire Sudanese youngsters around the nation.

“I want to be the best player I can be, whether that be even at VFL or local level; but I more want to inspire other Sudanese kids to play footy as well,” Andrew said.

Another Stingray set to impress on draft night is Miller Bergman – a hard-running utility – also from Berwick.

Bergman was a self-admitted dream by Dandenong head-coach Nick Cox during the year when Bergman ran over 13 kilometres in the second round of the year against Greater Western Victoria Rebels.

Star News Group interviewed Bergman in May this year, where he spoke about his desire to make it to the AFL level, and how he’s used Covid as a way to improve not only his fitness, but his game.

“During games I just try and run as much as

“During the Covid lockdown (in 2020) I was running maybe three to four times a week.

“5km, 10km, then sometimes a short 1km run to just tick the legs over every now and then.

“Now that training is back, I run once or twice a week. I am preparing for the harder stages if I am able and lucky enough to get there.

“I have gone and watched North Melbourne train, I am a mad North Melbourne supporter, I have seen how hard they work at training, I have tried to get that into my own scenario.

“Keep fit and work hard, it is never going to

get easier the higher you go.”

Doveton’s Connnor MacDonald and Berwick’s ‘Juddy’ Clarke are also in contention for a second round selection.

While they play very dissimilar roles in the Dandenong engine room, they complimented each other splendidly this year, with MacDonald dominating the inside and Clarke likewise on the outside.

Clarke – a left-footer – was ever-reliable in the Rays midfield this year, while MacDonald was a constant improver, working on both his strength – his inside game – and building his running capacity to add the string of outside ability to his bow.

Close, but not close enough as Panthers fall short

By Tyler Lewis Saturday’s season opener for Dandenong’s Men’s side was a simple case of ‘so close, yet so far’.

The Panthers won the toss on what appeared to be a dry wicket and opted to bat; despite the top five all reaching double figures and facing 25 balls or more, the home side couldn’t get a batter to go on with their start to post a demanding total.

And to Camberwell’s credit, it seemed whenever the Dandenong unit appeared to build a partnership, the Magpies would send a set bat on his way to the pavilion.

Former skipper Tom Donnell (40) loomed as the key early with his trademark square of the wicket game on show against Pies debutant Tom Nelson, but it was ultimately his strength that led to his undoing, skying a similar stroke off the bowling of Chris Bridle.

Panthers recruit Sam Newell sent a shiver through his new side when he played an ambitious drive second ball, but he recovered to steer Dandenong to a competitive total.

Newell’s 49 – which included two maximums to the shorter boundary – came at a crucial time for the Panthers, as it seemed a couple of quick wickets would leave the home side posting a bleak 130.

The left-hander fell one run from a halfcentury on debut, skying a ball in the late stages of the innings.

In reply of Dandenong’s 7/189, Camberwell got off to a steady start, with both openers Ben Rowles (36 from 54) and Rishab Guddadamane (24 off 42) getting starts.

The Pies got to 58 without losing a wicket, before the innings begun to resemble that of the Panthers first innings, with regular wickets proving the undoing of the travelling side.

Despite the phenomenal bowling performances from the new faces of this Dandenong attack: Braden Tauber (1/27 off nine) and Gehan Seneviratne (1/22 off ten), the Panthers were unable to restrict Camberwell chasing down its total. dandenong.starcommunity.com.au
