Lest we forget

By Parker McKenzie and Shelby Brooks The Monbulk RSL paused to reflect and commemorate Remembrance Day in a somber ceremony at the eleventh hour today.

The service at the RSL building on Main Street was opened by Private Stuart Coghill playing the bagpipes, followed by a two min-

ute silence to remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Last Post was played and the Ode of Remembrance by Laurence Binyon was read before wreaths were laid.

Monbulk RSL President Bill Ford led the service in his eighth year as President and after the ceremony said it was a bittersweet day.

“We are here to remember all of our fallen colleagues who fought,” Mr Ford said.

“I think back and we had 17 and 18 year old men, and they were called men back then, die on the battlefield in the belief of protecting this country and making it a better place.”

Private Coghill said he learned to play the bagpipes in 2013 when he was with his battal-

ion in the army and it was an honour to play on Remembrance Day. “I’ve played the solo bagpipes for prime ministers, premiers of state and the chief of the army,” he said.

“The chief of the army was my favourite person to play for.”

IN BRIEF Serious crash in Boronia Knox Highway Patrol are investigating a serious collision in Boronia on Wednesday 10 November.

Police said an emergency response vehicle stopped on the southbound emergency lane on Eastlink around 3.30pm and the driver was assisting a motorist who had come to a stop the freeway after he discovered his Nissan SUV had a flat tire.

A white Ford wagon crashed into the rear of emergency response truck causing the truck to hit a 56-year-old Clyde North man, the Nissan SUV and a 65-year-old Chelsea Heights man who was changing the flat tire.

The 43-year-old driver of the Ford, his two passengers and one other were taken to hospital after the incident.

A 45-year old Cranbourne East man situated in the rear passenger seat received lifethreatening injuries.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the white Ford wagon travelling southbound on Eastlink prior to the collision or with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Detectives from the Armed Crime Squad have charged Brendan Searle following an incident in Boronia last weekend where a firearm was allegedly discharged at police.

Searle surrendered himself to police at the Victoria Police Centre on Spencer Street about 4.40pm on Tuesday 9 November.

He was interviewed and charged with twelve offences including: Discharge a firearm reckless to safety of a police officer (x2) Assault police indictable (x2) Reckless conduct endanger life Prohibited person use firearm Attempted aggravated carjacking Threat to inflict serious injury Commit indictable offence whilst on bail Contravene certain conduct conditions Aggravated burglary (person present) Unlawful assault He will be presented to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court this evening for a filing hearing.

A public appeal was made for information regarding Searle’s whereabouts following the incident on Boronia Road, Boronia on Saturday 6 November.

“Today you look at the comradeship out in our hall,” Mr Ford said.

“We tell a few funny stories, none of the nitty gritty stuff gets talked about at all, because you see horrors you don’t tell people about.”

He also took the time to rebuke Victorians who used war memorials as a rallying point for protests.

“Those guys died to have a good society and it is just madness what they did at the Shrine of Remembrance,” he said.

“That is sacred land and they are using it like a tipping ground, you should have seen the mess they left behind.”

Red poppies also bathed the streets of Emerald on Thursday 11 November as Remembrance Day was commemorated by local RSL members and ex-service personnel.

RSL members spent time in the lead up decorating the streets in red, using spare poppies from the 20,000 that were made for the 100 year anniversary of the end of WWI in 2018.

Emerald RSL president Peter Maloney said the town didn’t need signs anymore to let everyone know it was time to commemorate Remembrance Day. “It’s part of the tradition now in Emerald to decorate the town at Remembrance Day and Anzac Day,” he said.

“We’re really pleased with how it looks.”

Cr Child YR new mayor

By Parker McKenzie The new mayor of Yarra Ranges Council will be a familiar face to local residents, with Councillor Jim Child returning as Mayor of the Yarra Ranges local government area.

“I’m excited about it and I’m humbled by it too,” Mayor Child said.

“Since being involved with council and coming back to be a councillor in 2012, I’ve just sensed that we are probably living in one of the best places you could possibly live.”

Mayor Child was first elected to local government in 1982 within the defunct Shire of the Upper Yarra, which was replaced with Yarra Ranges Council in 1994 through a merger of surrounding shires.

He was president of the Shire of the Upper Yarra in 1985, and has been the councillor for the O’Shannassy ward for nine years.

He acknowledged the last year has been one of the most challenging for local residents that he can remember, but commended the community for their ability to deal with pandemics, bushfires and natural disaster in recent times.

“In these troubled times we are in at the moment, they look after themselves and there is this sense of resilience as well,” he said.

“What’s really helped us as a council is being able to engage with the community and of course help those who do need assistance, but I’m just so proud to be involved with the community and see that resilience.”

Mayor Child is now in his second stint at the head of Yarra Ranges Council, replacing Cr Fiona McAllister as mayor after her term finished.

He said the council’s biggest task will be

ensuring the local community can thrive after 262 days in lockdown since the beginning of the pandemic.

“There are great opportunities out there for the community to engage in to get a feeling of accomplishment and getting back to business as usual.”

Facilitating the transition back to normality after the lockdowns in Victoria will be a major goal of Mayor Child’s 12 month term.

“Post-pandemic we need to strive to move ahead, get out of this and give back that sense of normality.”

Another major challenge will be the transition away from the natural forest timber industry in the area and ensuring the local community is supported through these changes.

“That’s going to be a significant issue to deal with in the Upper Yarra and we have to work with the government and communities there.

“Part of the state government’s forestry plan is to deal with looking after our communities as they come through that transition,” Tourism is another area that the new mayor believes will see growth, employing thousands in the region and is an industry that will have a strong bounce back after being affected heavily by lockdowns and border closes.

He said the pandemic has changed the way Victorians view travel and made the Yarra Ranges an attractive tourist spot for intrastate travel.

“During the restriction period and coming out of limited travel distances, what do people do? They come in, they visit their closest region and that’s what we are seeing here.

“The most significant changes we’ve seen in the past 10 years is how the metropolitan communities have awoken to us.”

Cr Fiona McAllister looks back at year

By Renee Wood When Councillor Fiona McAllister stepped into the position as mayor at the ‘in person’ election last November, she was unaware of just how turbulent the year was ahead of her.

The 2020-2021 term was filled with lockdowns from the pandemic and wild storm events, all while Cr McAllister lead the councillors through a virtual realm.

The election was the last time the councillors were in a room together for an ordinary council meeting.

“I haven’t been in the chamber with the current council apart from that very first council meeting, so that was very different,” she said.

The virtual meetings set the tone for a year that was ‘different on many levels’ as she took on the role leading the new councillors after the election.

Alongside zoom becoming the new norm for council meetings, Cr McAllister said

‘WhatsApp’ was the way Councillors could communicate on a regular basis, with the diversity of the group a highlight of her year.

“This now became our way to check in, a way to share information, a way to connect and so that built relationships in ways that we weren’t able to in person.

“So I think we’ve got a lovely dynamic which is surprising given how little time we’ve actually spent in the same room together, I really do think it’s a testament to the personalities of the councillors.”

The CEO also went on leave for three months, which saw her role as mayor change for a period of time.

“That certainly changed the mayoral role because we had our executive team acting up and they all did a great job, but it did mean I had to be appropriately much more active as a mayor.”

The council would lead the region through lockdowns but also a year of complexities brought in by wild weather events.

“There were lots of kinds of quick decisions that I had to make that I probably have not had to make before but still that real focus on community.

“And then of course, the storms keep coming and getting more rain again so certainly it was a really different mayoral year.”

Other highlights were witnessing how the organisation and community sprang into action to help during the storm events.

“That will stick with me as a highlight, how we responded and how caring our communities are to be getting calls day and night from people wanting to drop up generators and make sandwiches and beautiful things.”

The virtual citizenship ceremonies were also an opportunity Cr McAllister enjoyed over the past twelve months.

“It is a very proud moment to be the person as mayor conferring citizenship to people who’ve been fighting for it for a very long time in many cases.”

Planning permit withdrawn in Mt Evelyn

By Mikayla van Loon A planning permit that had been submitted to Yarra Ranges Council for the development of a restricted place of assembly and associated buildings in Mount Evelyn has been withdrawn.

The applicant, Cadox Building Design, applied for a retrospective permit for an assembly place which had not been lawful.

The dwelling and agricultural property, including a berry farm, fruit orchard, other plants and ancillary activities, at 23 McKillop Road, which has been operating as the Wild Rabbit Farm, had intended for an 80-patron assembly space to be approved.

The application did align with the council’s relevant provisions to provide facilities for visitors to experience outdoor recreation activities whilst in amongst the beauty of the natural environment, it did not fragment farming land, it did not transform the rural area into a quasicommercial area and it contributed to tourism. mailcommunity.com.au

Wild Rabbit Farm has constructed a marquee and shipping container set up without a permit to use for events and weddings.

The proposal sought to gain a permit for the already erected marquee and two shipping containers to be used for events like weddings for just one day over the weekend between October and April.

Having been advertised, the proposal re-

ceived 14 objections relating to the traffic movement, noise, overdevelopment of the land and poor public transport.

A development engineer did not have any worries about parking or traffic management but did have some updates to meet the compliance requirements, including extending the gravel in the car parking area and widening the driveway.

“Based on an average car occupancy of three persons per vehicle, the proposed development is likely to generate an additional 54 vehicle movements, 27 on arrival and 27 on departure for 80 patrons, for a function/event, which is considered acceptable,” the report read.

The initial application was submitted in November 2019, which had been put out for referral with the CFA and Melbourne Water.

The application was withdrawn prior to the council meeting on 9 November, where councillors were to decide whether the permit should be approved.

Streeton by-election

By Parker McKenzie The Streeton Ward by-election will be held in early 2022 following the surprise resignation of Councillor Cathrine Burnett-Wake.

Yarra Ranges Council has informed the Victorian Electoral Commission of her resignation and it’s expected the election will be held within 150 days.

Ms Burnett-Wake has triggered the by-election when she accepted a Liberal party vacancy in the Eastern Victoria electorate of the Legislative Council following Edward O’Donohue’s resignation in September.

Incoming Mayor of Yarra Ranges Council Jim Child said that people in the Streeton Ward should contact council about any issues they have prior to the by-election.

“We don’t want any residents to feel they are unrepresented through this period until the by-election,” Mayor Child said.

“Myself, the deputy mayor or one of us as councillors will be available for anyone who wants to contact us as though we were their normal councillor.”

Ms Burnett-Wake won by 3.08 per cent of the vote in the 2020 Council elections, after the distribution of preferences gave her 5279 votes to Andrew Fulligan’s 4964.

Mr Fulligan said he is unsure if he will run in a by-election so soon after the 2020 general council elections.

“I’m considering my options about it,” he said.

“On one hand I’d love to do it, but on the other I’d have to talk it over with my family and think about it.”

Yarra Ranges Council last held a by-election in 2015 when Samantha Dunn won the Eastern Metropolitan seat in the Victorian Upper House.

“As far as the election itself it will be a normal process just like the 2020 elections,” Mayor Child said.

“There will only be one election for the ward when there were nine previously so it will probably be a simple process.”

Ms Burnett-Wake was approached for comment.

Hospos in need of staff

By Parker McKenzie Restaurant and cafes are facing an uncertain future as severe staff shortages could potentially lead to venues closing their doors.

Owner of The Independent Mauro Callegari said the ability to recruit staff at the moment is “terrible.”

“It’s worse than ever,” he said.

“We pay well, they get good tips and we are open four nights a week.”

The Argentinian restaurant in Gembrook employed 33 people before the Covid-19 pandemic, and Mr Callegari now has 13 staff.

Some of his former employees returned to their homes overseas, others took jobs with supermarkets for more regular work throughout lockdowns and several didn’t return because they disagreed with vaccinations.

“It’s extremely bad. There are no people around,” she said.

“I think Covid was the big issue. A lot of people either changed careers, had babies or

don’t want to come back to hospitality because it’s been so uncertain with lockdowns.”

For the winery, the inability to find new staff could mean closing the restaurant to patrons.

“I’ve just had three people quit at Oakridge,” Ms Berner said.

“So right now, we are uncertain whether the restaurant is going to be able to continue unless we find more stuff quickly.”

Mr Callegari said most of his staff travel from outside Gembrook to work in the restaurant and competing with other venues looking for staff has made recruiting waitstaff difficult.

“The demographic makes it difficult, it’s where we are based,” Mr Callegari said.

“One thing we are waiting for is international workers to return.”

Mr Callegari said the Independent had sponsored a foreign chef a year and half ago to work in the restaurant but he hasn’t been able to enter the country.

“We are restricted and limited in the way the business operates at the moment,” he said.

“We can’t do this forever.”

State government commits funds for storm recovery

By Parker McKenzie The Victorian state government has committed $25.7 million towards ongoing recovery from June’s massive storms, including funding for work to be undertaken on Mt Dandenong Tourist Road and Maroondah Highway.

These works will include tree removal, pruning, debris clearing, landslip works, pavement repairs and safety barrier works.

Minister for Emergency Services Jaclyn Symes said the clean-up process in an important part of the recovery.

“This funding will help locals get on with making their homes safer, there’s help avail-

able for whatever the community needs whether it’s clearing debris or clearing your mind,” she said.

“I encourage anyone who needs support to get in touch with BRV and find out what’s available.”

Yarra Ranges Council’s green waste disposal program will also receive $2 million in funding to run a targeted bushfire preparedness program for households requiring the disposal of timber and green debris.

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Ben Carroll said the focus of the package is on the local communities affected by the storms.

“We’re targeting areas of highest priority through our maintenance works to ensure the safety of all motorists on our road network,” he said.

“This investment will support local communities and economies in keeping them safe and open.”

A family was fortunate to escape injury after a tree fell through their roof.

Family home destroyed

By Parker McKenzie A Kalorama family had a dangerously close call when a large tree fell onto their house, causing extensive damage to the home but fortunately no injuries to the three people inside.

Roxanne Peterson said disaster struck at 2.30pm on Sunday 14 November when she home with her two sons aged seven and four.

“It was raining at the time and we had had some hail in the morning but it wasn’t overly wind,” she said.

“I was in the lounge room at the time and I heard this sudden and intense gust of wind, it actually made me pause the TV and 15 seconds later I heard a huge crash down near our bedroom where my seven year old was.”

Her husband left the house minutes before the tree fell through the roof.

Mrs Peterson said she ran to check on her son who she could hear “screaming he couldn’t

breathe”, but the door was blocked by a tree.

“I had to go outside and climb over the fallen limbs to get to him, thankfully when I reached him he only had a large piece of ceiling plaster on him and he came out without a scratch,” “The house is uninhabitable and we have been told by SES not to return. We have been taken in by some friends in Kallista.”

She believes it will be at least six months before her home is habitable again after recently repairing the house from damage caused by a previous storm.

“We were actually hit hard in June and only just had the damage fixed from that storm 3 weeks ago,” she said.

“Some of our neighbours from the street behind us quickly came to our rescue.”

Mrs Peterson said that her insurer is looking for permanent accommodation for the family while the damage is being accessed.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMV) is running a community information session about the strengthening and expansion of strategic fuel breaks in the Dandenong Ranges.

The forum will be held online Wednesday 24 November at 6pm.

Senior Project Lead Strategic Fuel Breaks at FFMV Hayley Coviello said the network of strategic fuel breaks in the Upper Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges is being improved.

“I encourage anyone who is interested to come along to one of our upcoming online community forums,” she said.

“These forums are intended to provide you with an opportunity to learn about what a strategic fuel break is and where they are being improve.”

Fuel breaks create space between fuel sources for fires to reduce the intensity and speed a fire moves across a landscape and aid fire-fighters by providing access for vehicles and machinery.

As a last resort they can assist in reducing the intensity of fire directly threatening houses and other assets.

With significant work on the fuel break network about to begin, the event will provide information about the state-wide program as well as information on scheduled local fuel breaks over the next eight months.

The event will include presentations by members of the strategic fuel break team and will offer more information on types of breaks and who to contact for more information and engagement.

“There will be opportunities to have your questions answered,” Mrs Coviello said.

“While strategic fuel breaks are not a silver bullet to stop all fires in the future, they are another tool in our kit to manage the impacts of bushfires, making it easier, safer and faster for our firefighters to suppress fires.”

The Victorian Government has invested $35 million to enhance the state’s strategic fuel break network. 542 kilometres have been upgraded already, which has exceeded the 2020/21 season goal of 484km.

Another 905km of fuel breaks are planned for completion by June 2022.

Yarra Valley Water joins Race to Zero campaign

By Parker McKenzie Yarra Valley Water has joined the United Nations’ Race to Zero campaign with the target to generate 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025.

The global campaign aims to rally organisations to take immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030.

Yarra Valley Water Managing Director Pat McCafferty said the company was already powering 50 per cent of operations with renewables.

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time and we’re proud to be leading the way in reducing our greenhouse gas emissions with ambitious goals that go beyond zero,” Mr McCafferty said.

“We’ve achieved this through leading projects like our food waste to energy facility at

Wollert which converts about 30,000 tonnes of food scraps into more than 7,000,000 kWh of clean energy a year.”

14 water utilities companies from Australia and New Zealand have committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2050 at the latest.

Mr McCafferty said new projects including the development of a second food waste to energy facility and a floating solar installation would help Yarra Valley Water reach the goal.

“We’ve also installed solar panels at our head office and treatment plants and we’re members of Zero Emissions Water which purchases energy in bulk from Victoria’s largest solar farm,” he said.

“We’re working on how we will accelerate our progress to hit net zero by 2025, and then using the offsets we generate to go beyond zero carbon to address legacy emissions.”

Youth back together

By Parker McKenzie After months of being unable to run services, Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. is restarting their regular Friday night meetings.

Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. is an independent non-religious youth organisation aiming to create an inclusive space for teens and kids to meet and make friends.

Founder Belinda Grooby said interest in the youth group has been huge since the lockdown of metropolitan Melbourne ended in October and restrictions have continued to ease.

“We’ve had a lot of brand new enquiries,” Belinda said.

“When we came out of lockdown it exploded.”

Belinda founded the organisation in 2018 when she was concerned about the lack of opportunities for young teens to connect with each other outside school and sport.

Tribe-Monbulk Youth Inc. is a volunteer organisation and is funded through community partners and Yarra Ranges Council.

Belinda said the Covid-19 pandemic has created further challenges for children and young teens.

“At the height of the 2020 lockdown we surveyed 143 young people and most felt unprepared for the year ahead, with many feeling they had lost their voice,” she said.

“Kids had no way of getting away like essential workers did and we will see the impact of these lockdowns for years.”

Picture: SUPPLIED a negative impact on their wellbeing, with 89 per cent feeling lonely and 87 per cent feeling they needed more support for their mental health and well-being.

Two youth groups run on a Friday night, one for children aged eight to 12 at 5.30pm until 6.30pm, and another for 13 to 18-year-olds from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.

Belinda said they usually have around 50 people attend across the two groups but with the need for more support it could be more.

“For our young people it has been really difficult to get back and find those connections they’ve missed out on,” she said.

“Building those important social skills is going to be great for everyone involved.

“I don’t know who is more excited to be back, me or the kids.”

The meetings take place at Monbulk Living and Learning Centre at 21 Main Road, Monbulk with food provided for those attending.

Two local not-for-profit’s work helping people with disability gain employment has been highlighted with a nomination at the Learn Local awards.

The Basin Community House has been put forward for the award by the Department of Education for their partnership with Tasty Az. The Catering for Success program creates work opportunities for people through a Tasty Az social enterprise after young adults with disabilities complete an introductory hospitality course through the Basin Community House.

Learners in the program receive training in a cooking school commercial kitchen at Tasty Az and a cafe within a local arts centre.

The partnership’s success in delivering results for students led to a nomination for the local pre-accredited program award.

The Basin Community House’s Heather McTaggart said the most important success of the partnership is the employment outcomes for “vulnerable learners”.

“One of our strengths as an organisation is partnering with others,” Ms McTaggart said.

“Many of our students go onto open employment afterwards.”

The Learn Local awards are an annual event held by the Adult, Community and Further Education Board to celebrate the success of individuals, programs and training providers across Victoria.

Ms McTaggart said the program focuses on aiding students to achieve employment by setting them up with the skills required for employment.

“Through Tasty Az students have the opportunity to cater at ministerial events and then the next week have pop up events to support homeless people,” Mrs McTaggart said.

“It is supported and self-focused learning, which is why it has been a success.”

Learners who have completed the course this year have gained employment at Tasty Az’s new cafe at Burrinja Cultural Arts Centre and other local hospitality businesses.

One student has gone on to complete an accredited Certificate IV in disability.

The Basin Community House has also been nominated for a local partnership award for bringing together three learn local providers, two job centers and the Department of Justice and Community Safety to address the need of criminal offenders to complete educational, vocational or personal development programs despite social restrictions due to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

A colouring competition, scavenger hunt and storytime make up this year’s Dinovember program which began 8 November.

Upwey Archies awarded

By Parker McKenzie When the two winners of the Upwey Archies community art exhibition were announced, they were surprised to find out they knew each other well.

Paul Miller won the open category and nine-year-old Poppy Hayler won the top prize in the 14 and under category.

“I was very proud of myself because I worked really hard through lockdown,” Poppy said.

“I felt it was kind of funny that Paul, the other person who won it was our neighbour.”

The Upwey Archies is an art exhibition organised by Upwey Community Group in partnership with Burrinja Cultural Centre, and it partners with local businesses to display entries in their windows and shopfronts.

“Because I’m an only child I’ve been by myself a lot during lockdown, and that’s why I learned how to paint quite a lot, it’s an easy option to do,” Poppy said.

“Mum is also an artist so that helps too.”

Poppy’s mother Eloise said that the budding artist had some other inspiration along the way.

“She’s got an amazing art teacher named Sophia Walsh,” Eloise said.

“She’s been a big influence on her.”

When Paul Miller drew a portrait of his nine-year-daughter Anna while in lockdown, he didn’t expect to win the community art event.

“We spent a lot of time together in lockdown and it was bit of a struggle for kids her age where they should be quite social and I was quite busy working from home,” he said.

“I took a day off to paint a portrait of Anna wearing a mask to capture the essence of what she was going through and spend some more time with her.”

Paul had never heard of the competition before this year, but he appreciated the opportunity to spend quality time with his daughter and share the results with the community.

“I really like the community we’ve got here, I’ve been living here for nearly 14 years.

“It was a good event and something I could do and share with Anna.”

He never expected to win when he entered the competition as a fun activity with his daughter.

“I know Anna loves drawing and painting so we did some painting together.

“It was a bit of shock, I didn’t even know what to expect with how it was all set up or how many people were entering.”

For Poppy, the thrill of seeing her art on display was an exciting experience.

“I like it when people drive past and people are pointing at it, looking at it and saying that’s amazing,” Poppy said.

“Like oh, that’s mine.”

Eloise said the event was a chance for Poppy to connect with her local community, even when lockdowns stopped her socialising.

“We couldn’t do anything like go to classes, it was a way for the community to be con-

“We knew all these people that were doing the portraits as well and then posting on Facebook, so it felt like she was involved in a group art project.”

The sense of community the event produced made an impression on Paul.

“It’s a good community we’ve got here, I don’t know how many other suburban towns and villages do this sort of thing,” Paul said.

“Walking the streets and seeing all the paintings in the windows is pretty cool, so thanks to Upwey Community Group, it’s really good.”

New partnership for Be Wise awareness fundraiser

By Mikayla van Loon Helping mourn the end of someone’s life is what Le Pine Funerals specialise in but it’s the avoidable deaths like Pat Cronin’s that leave a lasting impression.

In 2016, at just 19 years old, Pat was coward punched from behind as he leant down to help a friend off the ground.

It was less than 36 hours later that his parents made the heart wrenching decision to turn his life support off.

Matt Cronin, Pat’s father, said none of what happened to Pat made any sense, that he had gone out for a quiet night with some friends and never returned home.

“Pat wasn’t a fighter. He was just a really good kid, he was a very smart kid. He had a scholarship at Latrobe University, where he was studying to become a physio and he was in second year uni at the time,” Matt said.

“He had the world at his feet really and for this to happen to someone like Pat just didn’t make sense to us, it didn’t make sense to anyone.”

In an attempt to educate people about senseless violence and the consequences of one punch attacks, Matt helped set up the Pat Cronin Foundation to raise awareness.

“There’s well over 120 in the last 10 years of people who died as a result of coward punches and countless more have been hospitalised and the hospitalisations, the permanent head injuries and things like that, they just don’t get recorded, it’s a real unknown statistic,” he said.

From Monday 15 November until Sunday 21 November the annual Be Wise Walk will aim to reach a total of 16,362 kilometres walked, the distance between Melbourne and Imperia Italy, where Pat did an exchange.

While Le Pine Funerals have participated most years since the walk started, this year they came on as a sponsor, with teams from Lilydale and Ferntree Gully taking part in the walking challenge.

Learning romance writers secrets The Australian Writers Centre recently presented the “How to become a romance writer” online event.

Hosted by Pamela Freeman and Kali Anthony, it provides an intimate look inside the world’s biggest-selling genre.

Freeman, writing as Pamela Hart, specialises in historical romances set in World War One and the Roaring Twenties.

Her books are highly popular in print, digital and audio formats at our local libraries.

Meanwhile, Anthony writes contemporary romance novels and has published multiple titles with Harlequin Presents/Mills and Boon Modern.

To her, writing is a love affair, and there can never be too many happy endings.

The event begins with the clarification that romance novel has to have a happy ending, unlike Romeo and Juliet as a love story.

“The idea of a romance is that you have a kind of contract with the reader that everything will be OK in the end,” says Freeman.

With that ultimatum in mind, Anthony explains that romance novelists set out with a promise to meet readers’ expectations. It’s easier said than done, as authors have to work hard to deliver that promise.

Following writing and revision, it’s time to submit the manuscript. Within the industry,

PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN each publisher has their own specific needs, so it can be highly beneficial for aspiring authors to do their research.

Anthony did a lot of reading to figure out for whom she wants to write. It’s a matter of matching the voice with the choice.

In terms of creating compelling characters, Freeman focuses on “people who can grow”.

“The aim is for your two main characters to become more fully themselves as a consequence of loving each other.

There’s got to be a gap between who they are in the beginning of the story and who they ought to be, which is who they are at the end.”

Specifically: “While creating a character, you’re looking for areas that create internal barriers that keep them from becoming in-

volved with someone. Whether it’s wounds, flaws or traumas from the past, it just has to be enough that we can see they’re not who they ought to be. And connecting with that someone in the story allows them to become who they should be.”

To Freeman, that’s why romance is popular – it’s about people becoming fully human through connection.

Anthony further enlists the analogy of lock and key, with the hero and heroine both being lost but each holding something unique that can unlock the other as a whole individual.

Finally, regarding the so-called “intimacy”, Anthony says “get yourself out of the way” and don’t worry what your boss, children or 95-year-old grandmother would think about your writing.

It’s crucial that intimate scenes are emotionally driven events impacting on each character’s journey.

They’re there to drive the story and create change, not to fill space.

This review has captured some of the essential points, but the hour-long “How to become a romance writer” event offers more tips that benefit both writers and readers.

No Time To Die a Daniel Craig farewell No Time To Die Starring Daniel Craig, Lea Seydoux and Rami Malek Rated M No Time To Die is an engaging, well-directed but overstuffed send-off for Daniel Craig’s version of James Bond.

A retired Bond (Craig) is pulled back into service to secure a deadly superweapon.

No Time To Die is, in many respects, a perfect distillation of classic Bond tropes.

The dialogue is self-aware and quippy (no doubt thanks to comedy-focused co-writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge) without being trite. The gadgets are fun and fanciful without being ridiculous. The female characters are gorgeous but proactive and not overtly objectified; Ana de Armas has a fantastic single set-piece as an

eager, almost bubbly young agent who proves ultra-capable in a fight.

Craig is still formidable and suave as Bond, and has great chemistry with franchise mainstays Q (Ben Whishaw), M (Ralph Fiennes) and Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), along with the

magnetic new 007 (Lashana Lynch). The plot has clear dramatic and personal motivators in the Heracles superweapon and Bond’s conflicted love for Madeleine (Lea Seydoux), and the action sequences are tense, exciting and easy to follow, so the pacing feels quicker and lighter than the 163-minute run-time would suggest.

However, the plot also has an overcomplicated web of conspirators and some hamfisted tie-ins to the previous Craig Bond films.

Bland Bond villains are rare, and Safin (Rami Malek), No Time To Die’s main antagonist, is bland and severely underdeveloped.

No Time To Die is a classy, enthralling swansong for the current Bond series, but lacks focus and a memorable villain.

Handing over the reins With an incredible year starting to wind up, so too is my term as Mayor of Yarra Ranges.

After being elected to the role in November last year, Tuesday 9 November marked the end of my second term as Mayor.

Of all the years I’ve been in the Yarra Ranges – and my nine serving as Councillor – I don’t think we’ve had many as tumultuous or challenging as the past year.

We’ve of course been navigating the Covid-19 pandemic, finding a way to stay connected with our loved ones near and far; finding ways to adapt to the challenges, stay safe and stay afloat.

We were also at the epicentre of one of the largest storms to ever hit the state, an event that we’re still reeling from and will be working for many years to recover from.

Once again our incredible community has come together and supported each other during difficult times.

The team at the council, who have been so directly affected as well by all thrown our way this year, have also found so many new ways to listen, support and respond throughout the year. My heartfelt thanks to all.

Whilst it has been a tough year, I have greatly enjoyed my time as Mayor and have felt extremely proud to represent the communities of Yarra Ranges.

With the history, experience and understanding that Cr Child carries and the enthusiasm, dedication and insight that Cr Skelton brings with her, I know that Yarra Ranges Council is in good hands for the coming year.

Building industry worker retires after 48 years

Down goes the pavilion

By Mikayla van Loon Trucks and excavators have been onsite at the Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve this week to get demolition underway of the old sporting pavilion.

This is an exciting step towards getting the brand new two-storey building built after months of delays due to Covid-19, storms and planning issues.

According to Melbcon construction workers, as they began demolishing it, the original building had three roof lines, meaning it had been extended at least twice.

On Thursday 11 November, all that remained of the building were the external walls, some interior dividing walls and the foundations.

Having started demolition works on Wednesday 10 November, it only took a couple of days to see the old building fade to rubble.

Although sad to see it go, Mount Evelyn Sports and Community Hub (MESCH) president Bryan McCarthy said it was time.

Each month, construction workers aim to have something new completed, beginning with the pipework and plumbing before foundations and a slab can be laid.

Construction of the building is set to be complete in 12 months time, ready for the local community to use as a sporting facility and meeting space.

MESCH plans on sharing progress reports with the community as the structure is built.

When Pieter Beimers was 16 years old, he dreamt of being a pastry chef but 48 years later he has just retired from a career in the building industry.

Unable to get an apprenticeship, Mr Beimers was offered a job at Bowens in Mount Evelyn, something he couldn’t pass up and after all those years, he finished up with the company on Friday 12 November.

Not staying in just one position throughout his career, Mr Beimers said he moved from the hardware department to being a sales representative to lastly being in accounts receivables.

Bowens has a reputation for having long term employees, something Mount Evelyn branch manager Brett Howlett said is testament to the Bowen family and the opportunities created by the company.

“It’s sad to see him go but I think everyone’s pretty happy for him because he put a lot of time into the one company, so it’s a bit of mixed emotions,” Mr Howlett said.

In almost 50 years being in the building industry, Mr Beimers said things were a lot more simple back when he first started and the technology was extremely different.

“It’s probably increased as far as products go and the knowledge you need to have. Back in the early ‘70s it was fairly standard, there wasn’t the engineering development in building products as there is now that’s changed and as far as busyness that’s increased,” he said.

But it’s the people he’s met over the span of his time with Bowens that means the most to him.

“Just dealing with the people you meet, as far as the sales side goes, that part was good and I still keep in contact with some of them and that goes back quite a long time,” he said.

At 65 years of age and with three grandchildren, Mr Breimers said it is time to let go of his career and start focusing on his family, as well as some travel hopefully.

“And I might do some volunteer work because I used to be in the CFA which was just across the road there [in Mount Evelyn], so I might look at doing something like that as well.

“I am a little bit sad to resign but I think the time has come. I’m 65 so I think it’s time to enjoy life a bit more with a bit more freedom.”

Bowls off to a good start

By Eric Markham Monbulk 1 had a fantastic start to the pennant season with a convincing win over Berwick at home on Saturday.

Rain delayed the start of play by thirty minutes with Monbulk going into the game with three debutantes in the top team, Tim Stapleton, Carole Wight and Ron Bishop.

Jim Bras’ rink held a lead throughout the first half of the game and after 14 ends were 5 shots in front. However, they dropped four shots on the fifteenth and eighteenth ends and found themselves level with one end to play.

They held their nerve and won the end by one shot to record a victory 16 shots to 15.

Brian Smith’s rink also had a tight battle and were leading by two shots after 12 ends.

They then lost the next three ends to be three shots down. The Monbulk rink rallied to win four of the last six ends to win by three shots, 19 to 16.

Eric Markham’s rink were behind by three shots after the fourth end. They then worked away and by the sixteenth end scores were lev-

el. They then won the next four ends to lead by eight shots going into the last end and eventually won by seven shots, 18 to 11.

Tim Stapleton’s rink were one shot in front after three ends, but then won the next four ends to push the lead out to nine shots. They then put on a masterful display winning a total of 16 ends to run out winners by 21 shots, 30 to nine. This gave Monbulk a win on all rinks by 32 shots, 83 to 51.

Monbulk 2 travelled to Keysborough Bowling Club to play Dandenong RSL. This match also proved to be a close match throughout the contest.

Eric Furby’s rink trailed early and after nine ends were seven shots down. They then managed to win the next four ends to draw within one shot. They lost the next three ends, but managed to stay in striking distance by limiting their opponents to one shot.

The Monbulk rink grabbed a couple of multiples and by winning the last end by two shots they salvaged a draw, 16 shots each.

Graeme Goller’s rink started slowly and were 10 shots down after eight ends. They then won nine shots in three ends to move within one shot. The game turned on its head when Goller’s rink won six shots on the eighteenth and nineteenth ends to lead by two shots with two ends to play. However, they could not maintain their form and lost the last two ends to go down by two shots, 21 to 23.

Peter Donder’s rink found themselves five shots in front after nine ends. They then lost the next five ends to trail by seven shots. They stuck to the task and won the majority of ends, but dropping five shots on the eleventh end cost them victory, going down by six shots, 13 to 19.

Jim Anderson’s rink jumped out of the blocks early and after seven ends led by 12 shots. They then lost the next four ends to have the margin reduced to three shots. They were able to hold this lead to the end winning by four shots, 22 to 18. Monbulk went down by four shots on the overall 72 shots to 76.

Disappointment as rain cancels cricket season start

By Parker McKenzie Local cricket players faced disappointment with heavy rains across the weekend cancelling the first games of the Ringwood and District Cricket Association (RDCA) 2021/22 season.

Players and coaches will have to wait another week to return to the field after all fixtures across the weekend were cancelled by the Association.

RDCA announced in a statement that junior competitions would be postponed until following week because of rain affected play.

“The weather gods have conspired against us tonight,” RDCA said.

“In making the decision to call off all junior cricket tonight we have also considered the rain that is forecast later on today, but also the chill factor in that the temperature will only be 13 degrees and falling.”

The Association thanked clubs, junior coordinators and volunteers for their hard work in preparing for the season to begin.

“It has been the most challenging season ever in trying to finalise playing numbers and it has created a lot of frustrations,” RDCA said.
