The community has rallied behind Emerald’s SES controller after a tree decimated his family home in Cockatoo during Friday morning’s wild weather.

Ben Owen had only left his home 10 minutes before a large pine tree fell on his home on Haylock Avenue around 6.30am Friday 29 October.

Ben’s wife and daughters were trapped inside but were fortunately uninjured.

“The tree landed where I was standing 10 minutes earlier,” Ben told the Star Mail.

“My wife called to say a tree had fallen on the house. She was trapped in the bedroom.

“I drove back and ran down to where my daughters were bunkered in together for the night and they had a smashed window. So they and the greyhound crawled through the window and into my arms.”

The other family greyhound received minor injuries to her legs and was taken to the vet for emergency surgery.

A GoFundMe was set up by Ben’s deputy SES controller, surpassing $10,000 in 24 hours.

Steve Reid said he hoped the money would assist Ben with costs not covered by insurance including vet bills, clothes and school items.

So far they have reached $13,000.

“Knowing his position in the community, lots of people have wanted to help in some way,” Steve said.

“It’s been a quick and great response. We’re hoping to reach $30,000.

“Ben is the sort of guy who will find a way to pay it forward again.”

The Owen’s had planned to leave for a camping trip for the long weekend, so Ben was able to grab their suitcases before taking refuge at his in-laws place Friday morning.

Seasonal workers needed

By Renee Wood Farmers are facing yet another summer harvest with a labour shortage as the Covid-19 pandemic still causes issues for international seasonal workers.

Yarra Valley Agriculture’s Kylie Ammerlaan said in the past mostly backpackers have serviced the Yarra Valley.

“At the moment we’re quite limited by the fact that we don’t have those people waiting around the Valley anymore,” Ms Ammerlaan said.

Yarra Valley Cherries is one of many producers who have relied on backpackers but Packing Shed Manager Robyn Hall said they’ve heard from very little in the past two years.

“We normally have a lot of backpackers contacting us mid year in the hope of finding themselves a farm job for the harvest season, but these last two years I have been very lucky to have maybe a couple of backpackers make contact with us,” Ms Hall said.

And for those still in the country, Victoria hasn’t been the most ideal place to visit.

“They’ve been unable to make it to Victoria before the harvest time, and then they run the risk if they’re in Victoria for the harvest, of trying to get back out to follow the harvest trail up the East Cost.”

Last season there was some crop losses reported in the area to Yarra Valley Agriculture due to not enough seasonal workers to pick the produce.

Yarra Valley Cherries thankfully secured picking contractors but this upcoming season is one they will need all hands on deck for with a harvest expected of around 100 tonnes.

“It’s not very often we go over a 100 tonnes, so I would still like to have a few more names of people who are looking for work and essentially who can work most days of the week is pretty important for us.”

“There’s lots of lots of opportunities to come and make some decent money in the next couple of months.”

Yarra Valley Agriculture has created a dedicated online hub, funded by the state government, to draw in new workers.

The Yarra Valley Seasonal Work hub is an

interactive web based platform with videos about seasonal work, information about harvests, and more importantly a jobs board where farmers can advertise jobs and prospective employees can apply.

“The other part of that website is a growers hub as well, so lots of information about employing people and lots of links and helpful templates that can help, a lot of Covid information and they can upload their jobs on there as well.”

“We’re looking for someone as a team leader in our packing shed, hopefully someone with a little bit of packing shed supervising experience to help us run our team in the shed, and a retail person in our retail shop where we sell our farm gate sales,” Ms Hall said.

“There’s a lot of different areas - the packing sheds quite a nice environment, it’s air conditioned, we make it a pleasant work experience, keep everybody focused, and it’s fast and exciting.”

Lightening strikes

A number of drivers have been caught doing the wrong thing on our roads over the Cup Day weekend.

As part of the eight day Operation Compass, Highway Patrol units have been vigilant in removing dangerous drivers from the roads.

Of those offences, a 57-year-old male driver of a white Toyota sedan collided with a parked car in The Basin on Friday 29 October.

He returned a positive Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) for alcohol and accompanied police for the purpose of an Evidentiary Breath Test (EBT), which returned a reading of 0.09.

He will face Court charged with careless driving and drink-driving offences.

Other drivers of various age ranges were found using mobile phones, drug driving, speeding, driving unregistered vehicles and whilst suspended.

By Shelby Brooks In what can only be described as a “shocking” experience, a tree in Emerald has caught on fire after being struck by lightning.

Emerald and Upper Beaconsfield SES crews were called out to a property on Hepner Road in Emerald around 6.30pm Thursday 28 October after reports of a tree on fire.

Emerald CFA captain Paul Yandle said the tree was on a large property and owners had already started to extinguish the blaze with their own fire fighting equipment.

“We just used the hoses that could reach a bit higher to extinguish flames in the taller branches,” he said.

While not a rare natural phenomenon, trees struck by lightening aren’t always caught on camera.

The photo of the tree, taken by the property owners, was shared on the CFA Facebook pages and received hundreds of likes and comments.

Mr Yandle said they see a couple of lightning trees a year.

“In a lightning storm it’s pretty common for a tree to get struck,” he said.

“Thankfully it’s often followed by some rain which is handy.

“Dry lightning storms in summer are very very scary.”

Mr Yandle said trees are often struck at a branch folk and scorch marks can be seen where the lightning reaches the ground.

Wild weather lashes the Yarra Ranges

At about 4:30pm on Sunday 31 October, a white Nissan utility lost control and collided with a tree on Swansea Road at the intersection of York Road in Montrose.

The 37-year-old male single occupant was conveyed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A number of people stopped to assist the driver.

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle travelling in the area prior to come forward and provide their details.

Anyone with dash cam footage is also urged to contact police.

Contact Leading Senior Constable Bull at Knox Highway Patrol on 9881 7900 should you have any information regarding the collusion.

Alternatively, make a confidential report via Crimestoppers by contacting 1300 333 000.

Enquiries as to the cause of the collision are ongoing.

Halloween theives Police are trying to identify two men dressed as a French maid and the queen of hearts following the theft of a police hat on Saturday 30 October in Boronia.

Transit police released an image of the pair after a protective services officer allegedly dropped a hat that was subsequently picked up and stolen.

October 31 is Halloween which may explain the pair’s peculiar choice of clothing.

Police have requested anyone with information regarding the identity of the men to contact Crimestoppers.

Local SES crews are still working to clear many hazards and are still receiving calls for assistance as residents assess the impacts of Thursday and Friday’s wild weather.

The transport department has advised of upcoming road works at the Maroondah Highway and Warburton Highway intersection in Lilydale.

Works are scheduled from 2 November to 6 November between 8pm and 5am each day.

Detours will be in place around the intersection during this time.

The Yarra Ranges was yet again lashed by storms and wild winds throughout the evening of Thursday 28 October and into Friday morning.

A severe weather warning was issued for damaging winds over southern Victoria and it’s believed they reached 100 kilometres per hour.

Vic SES received more than 7000 calls for help across the state as of Sunday 31 October and said, “Please be mindful of longer than usual wait times if requesting SES emergency assistance on 132-500. If your emergency is life-threatening, phone 000. Thank you for your patience.”

More than 100,000 homes lost power due to the storms and AusNet has worked to restore most of those however, 15,000 customers were still without electricity as of Monday 1 November.

Hundreds of homes went without power in Seville, Wandin East, Silvan, Mount Evelyn, Sherbrooke, Macclesfield, Wandin North and East, Healesville, Chum Creek, Monbulk, Olinda, Emerald, Cockatoo, Kalorama, Sassafras and Mount Dandenong.

While more than a thousand properties in Gembrook and The Basin were off the grid.

Monbulk expands

By Parker McKenzie The Monbulk district has expanded ahead of the 2022 State Election with Emerald, Cockatoo and Gembrook now in the electorate.

The district will also now contain parts of Ferntree Gully and the Basin to offset losses to the Evelyn district. The Electoral Commission said the reason the Monbulk area has been enlarged due to it being 10.72 per cent below the district average of electors before the changes.

Now the expansion has increased the eligible voters in the electorate to 49,108.

Monbulk member and Deputy Premier and Education Minister James Merlino has mixed feelings about the changes.

“While I’m sad to be losing areas like Montrose and Kilsyth, I’m delighted that the Dandenong Ranges will finally be within the one electoral district, a first in my time as Member for Monbulk.” Mr Merlino said.

The Gembrook district, held by Liberal MP Brad Battin, has been abolished and absorbed into Monbulk.

Battin told Star News on Wednesday 30 June that he would be running for the Berwick seat in anticipation of the changes.

“For me personally, it’s a challenge because they’re abolishing my seat but I’m born and bred and lived in Berwick all my life so I would want to run for the Berwick seat,” he said.

“I’ll go through the formal party processes

Monbulk is currently held by Deputy Premier James Merlino. and give them that respect to make that decision but I will be putting my hand up for Berwick.”

A regional reunion boosts tourism

By Mikayla van Loon The countdown was on until regional and metropolitan Victoria reunited once more as restrictions eased across the state on Friday 29 October.

For tourism destinations like the Yarra Ranges that are on the fringe of regional and metropolitan Melbourne, the joining of these two entities was a welcome relief for the region.

Yarra Ranges Tourism CEO Simon O’Callaghan said it was a big positive for businesses to get back on track after the pandemic and heading into the summer season.

“I think it’s a much awaited reopening of the whole state as one that’s really important for people’s confidence around where they can go and what they can do,” he said.

“The most important thing is that I think a lot of people weren’t fully aware that they could travel to the Yarra Valley and the Dandenong Ranges with it being part of the metropolitan Melbourne classification, yet in their minds, they feel that it’s a regional destination.”

Mr O’Callaghan said the previous weekend was essentially a ‘soft launch’ for businesses with the removal of many restrictions placed on movement.

“We saw a lot of people in particular in the Dandenong Ranges, which was fantastic after the storm event back there in June. That part of our region is going to need some really strong trade to support its recovery from that event.

“This weekend, we’ll see more businesses who are opening who simply weren’t viable to open at the 70 per cent mark due to the restrictions, so with those coming off on Friday at 6pm that’s really exciting for our businesses.”

The summer period, right through autumn, is typically the busiest time of year with people coming to the area for day trips or overnight stays.

The launch back to statewide travel has already seen positive signs of a busy summer season, Mr O’Callaghan said, a trend which occurred last year as well.

“We’re already seeing strong bookings for the weekend ahead right into Christmas,” he said.

“We saw that last year, where many of the businesses in the region we’re having some of their best December’s ever, particularly in accommodation, which traditionally can be a bit softer, in the lead up to Christmas.”

Travellers from Melbourne make up 44 per cent of overall visitors to the Yarra Rang-

es, while 38 per cent come from regional Victoria.

“So that really strengthens the argument about why the opening up of those boundaries is so important for us.”

Mr O’Callaghan said it was evident that people came to the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges to experience the open air and natural environment, alongside the two other important pillars of wine and food.

But he hopes the wedding industry can return to the region, as well as mid-week business conferences, as they are also extremely important events for the region.

Yarra Ranges Tourism will also be leveraging some of the major events happening in Melbourne to draw people to the region.

“We’ll be looking to sort of leverage key Melbourne events as well. We know that Melbourne has a strong reputation for the theatre and the arts and we’ve got some really key events happening in that area in Melbourne.

“Moulin Rouge, for example, we’ve got the Australian Open so we’ll look to capitalise on those events and leverage state travel on the back of those events as well and for people looking to do a bit more than just have a city experience.”

Road works Road improvement works have commenced at the entrance of the Emerald Netball Club located at Pepi’s Land on Beaconsfield Emerald Road.

These road works are the third and final stage of this $4.1 million councilfunded project to provide a new netball pavilion which will include accessible change rooms, umpire change rooms, toilets inside and outside the building, office space, storage areas, a social area and kitchen, covered spectator areas and pedestrian paths.

The Australian Government has contributed $200,000 towards the final stage of the works.

The road works will improve access to the facility and will see the widening of Beaconsfield Emerald Road as well as the inclusion of a right-turn lane and left-turn slip lane into the entrance of the new pavilion.

These works are expected to be completed in 2022.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Brett Owen said he was delighted the project was entering its final stage.

“This will provide the local community with a state-of-the art sports and leisure facility which will be a vital asset long into the future in providing and encouraging active and healthy lifestyle choices.”

Federal Member for La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the road improvement works were the final stage of a fantastic sports and leisure facility which will serve as hub of activity in the local community for years to come.

“It is with a sense of pride that I can acknowledge the contribution of Australian Government in providing funding for the last stage of this worthwhile community project. Once complete, a new netball pavilion and accessible change rooms which will benefit many users, particularly female players.

“I know how iconic Pepi’s land is locally, I’m sure that this project will be enthusiastically welcomed by the community.”

Star Mail footy tipsters celebrate a nail biting win The final siren has been rung for the AFL footy season of the year with the Demons coming out on top but it was a nail bitting finish in the end for the Star Mail’s tipping competition.

Coming in on first place by the smallest of margins was Barry Cripps from Healesville Toyota on a score of 128.

Yarra Ranges Council asks for surveyor support

By Parker McKenzie Yarra Ranges Council has asked for the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to appoint a manager of business to resolve orphaned surveying permits, an area of concern that the VBA believes is a council duty to resolve.

Yarra Ranges Council issued a statement regarding an ABC News article detailing how Victorian homeowners are being stranded with building permits that are unable to be completed.

This occurs when the original private building surveyor is no longer in business and other surveyors are unwilling to complete the job because of the risk of crippling insurance liabilities.

“We understand this is a complex and frustrating issue for members of our community who have found themselves in this position. Council has been and will continue to advocate to the VBA and State Government to assist residents in finalising these outstanding building permits,” the statement said.

“Council is also working with the Victorian Municipal Building Surveyors Group to advocate for action on behalf of the thousands of home owners across Victoria.”

Yarra Ranges Council said in these situations many homeowners have been left unable to occupy their homes and has called upon the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to use their powers to appoint a manager of business to resolve the issues.

The issue of orphaned permits has been worsened by building surveyor skills shortages, disciplinary activity and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Inventing a road radar

By Mikayla van Loon Every child’s dream is to be able to invent something someday - for Nicholas Hubbard it only took a couple of decades and a pandemic to give him the time to do so.

Living on a street in Belgrave that has a number of blind corners, Mr Hubbard had been pondering ideas of how he could alert drivers about oncoming cars since he moved in in 2002.

About eight weeks ago he said he had a “light bulb moment” and it got him on the path to creating a device that would alleviate the near misses that occur on his street.

“Outside of lockdown, this little quiet road is actually not that quiet and [the near misses] are very common, it would be multiple times a day,” Mr Hubbard said.

“I certainly am in and out multiple times a day and therefore, you can just about back in, you’re going to encounter somebody on one of these blind corners.”

“If you took a drive up my road you wouldn’t really call it windy, it’s really not but it just has the unfortunate corners and people do drive too fast, so there’s that element of it as well, a bit of coaching and learning for residents.”

The device he has created, with the help of Stuart Douglas from AGD Australia, uses two radar guns, pointing in both directions, which detect movement over 4km per hour and flash a light when two cars are recognised as moving.

Even as a 10 year old, Mr Hubbard was interested in all things spyware, to the point of bugging the teachers lounge at school and designing a light sensitive device that would let him and his brother know when their parents got home.

“I would best describe myself as a hobbyist level person in electronics. I’ve got a reasonable working knowledge but by no means would I consider I had a qualification or anything like that,” he said.

“I’ve been thinking about this problem for

years and it’s just been on the back burner.

“I thought ‘Covid is stopping me from working, so to stop myself from going mad sitting at home let’s really devote some energy to these ideas that have been rolling around in your head for a long time and start trying to get some of them to come to fruition’.”

Not only does the device detect movement of cars but it will also pick up pedestrian movement as well.

“It’s a narrow road, there’s no footpath, so you’ll have people that are out walking on the road as well.”

Mr Hubbard has submitted the design to the Victorian Department of Transport (DoT), as well as the equivalent departments in other states, as he believes the device could be adapted to suit a number of dangerous roads.

“Transport New South Wales, I put a submission into them and they want to review it but they want me to make a change before they do because the flashing light doesn’t meet Australian standards.

“So I’m busy working on the next revision which will have two signs on it basically which will say ‘slow down’ or ‘caution’ or something like that. I’m just working out the design of that currently.”

Yarra Trams has also expressed some interest in the device to alert vehicles at tram stops of people stepping off trams.

While the feedback from local residents and neighbours has been extremely positive, Mr Hubbard said he has to take the device down as DoT hasn’t given authorisation for it to be there.

“As soon as I’ve got the revised version, I’m going to just put it back before the DoT and say ‘please have another look’.

“This thing works, as I drive up the street towards my house and every time I see it go off, I smile because my device is working, but as soon as I come around the corner there’s a car or there’s people walking their dog and it’s just like, how is that not a safer way to be living?”

authority with jurisdiction to resolve the issue, and they will be secured against liability for their actions.

“Under Victorian legislation, the VBA has the power to intervene in these matters and in doing so, would be indemnified against any risk under the Building Act. The Victorian Building Authority is the correct and appropriate authority to resolve these issues, and should exercise their powers to appoint a manager to the business, as they are the only authority with jurisdiction under the relevant part of the Building Act being section 83B(b) to do so.” Yarra Ranges Council said.

VBA State Building Surveyor Andrew Cialini said the authority is looking at potential solutions, however councils have a responsibility to resolve the issue.

“The VBA has been active in seeking improvements to the regulatory framework to better support consumers impacted by orphan permits. Councils have statutory obligations to support consumers to resolve their building works,” he said.

“Given the local impacts on consumers it is imperative that all councils uphold their role in Victoria’s building control framework by accepting building permit applications, including the transfer of functions, and enforcement of compliance with the Building Act, where deemed appropriate.”

The VBA is currently collaborating with a host of organisations including the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors, the Municipal Association of Victoria and the Victorian Municipal Building Surveyors Group on potential options to resolve orphaned permit issues.

100km fun run for Variety

By Mikayla van Loon As someone who has always been quite fit and athletic, Liam Kidd decided to challenge himself even further but this time for a good cause.

On Saturday 30 October he ran 100km in 24 hours with his brother Jake around Belgrave South Recreation Reserve to raise money for Variety - the Children’s Charity.

“I’ve always wanted to do something with charity, and then once Covid hit, all football stopped, obviously, for the last two years, so I kept running and that,” Liam said.

“I sat down with my partner and I just said ‘this is what I want to do’ and we brainstormed some ideas and I ended up coming up with a 100km run over 24 hours, something that’s physically challenging but also mentally challenging.”

From there Liam asked his brother to join him, who had his own motivations for taking part in the run.

“For me, this weekend’s run wasn’t about the running challenge itself... it’s more about the charity and raising much needed funds and awareness for Variety,” Jake said.

“My partner Leanne’s son Kyson was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, ODD, ADHD and Motor Tourette’s when he was four years old. He’s now 13 years old and he’s a great kid but it’s been a long hard road for Lee and the family.

“I thought raising money for this great Charity, that would work with beautiful kids such as Kyson would be a great way to give back and support those in need.”

Liam said having become a father himself to a little boy Noah, he realised how testing parenting can be.

“We’re pretty lucky that Noah was healthy and fit. There are other families out there that are doing it tough, it’s not easy raising a child when they are fit and healthy but if you’ve got something else, that puts a bit of a strain on the work. The stress and the pressure, it would be a lot on parents,” he said.

“So I just thought, well, what can we do?

And that’s why I found variety and it’s just to create awareness and try to generate as much funds as we can to help a family or families and to support them in any way we can.”

Liam said he didn’t think the running side of things would be the difficult part but rather the mental side of being up for 24 hours.

the lockdown rules. So we’ve had a curfew so I haven’t been able to do any runs throughout the middle of the night or anything like that.”

Although he had been training and getting advice on what to do on the day, Liam said he was just planning on “winging it on the day.”

said was overwhelming.

Friends came down on Saturday to run a few laps around the oval and the football club opened up the bar, as well as hosted a barbeque, with all funds raised going directly to Variety.

The pair raised close to $10,000 for the charity which supports children who are sick, disadvantaged or have additional needs.

Talented young filmmakers take home ‘best’ awards

By Mikayla van Loon Three talented young filmmakers from the Dandenong Ranges were presented with awards at this year’s Lantern and Light Children’s International Film Festival (LLCIFF).

At the online awards ceremony on Sunday 24 October, the student jury had selected the best films produced by their fellow peers, from both overseas and locally.

Sherbrooke Community School student, Jazz Toland, 15, who studies film, dance, and drama at Ranges Academy of Performing Arts, took home The Next Wave Best Film for 12–18 year-olds for their film Repression.

“It’s an experimental exploration of the unconscious mind and how it deals with aspects of the personality that the conscious mind deems unacceptable or unwanted.

“I wanted to highlight how the mind can become an unsafe place and the anguish experienced in the mind of those with anxiety,” Jazz said.

The judges described Jazz’s film as “a brave, cutting-edge film”, that was thought provoking and confronting.

The talent didn’t stop there either. Ayisha Salem-Towner won the LLCIFF Best Performance Award for her film Harley Quinn’s Lost Childhood that was inspired by old footage of herself as a child and a haunting painful song she sang about her lost teddy which she could never get back.

Sarah Elizabeth was awarded the Camel Hump and Crow Screenplay award for her film entitled The Great Wesley Blue, alongside Ayisha Salem-Towner for her film Apple and Beatle.

“So this opportunity to focus on your film going onto a big screen, as against ‘I’m going to make a little video and put it on YouTube’, they don’t regard that the same way, we still regard the idea of putting on a film on the big screen as the one you want to do you want to see your film like that.

“When you give them that, when you give young people an opportunity, they embrace it in a different way.”

Time to support appeal

By Mikayla van Loon The day in which the country stops on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month to remember the sacrifice and service of Australia’s service men and women is just around the corner.

For local RSL clubs these few weeks in the lead up to Remembrance Day focus on raising funds for veterans welfare through the Poppy Appeal, this year marking the 100th year since it began.

In 1921 Australia imported one million silk poppies made by children from a French orphanage, which were then sold to financially support the orphanage and returned servicemen.

Monbulk RSL president Bill Ford has been spending two to three days a week in both Monbulk and Seville selling poppies for the cause.

“We have had a very good response from the public. I’ve sold over $4,000 worth already,” he said.

Mr Ford said he can usually sell anywhere between $7000 to $8000 worth of Remembrance Day poppies, funds that all go towards veteran’s health and wellbeing.

“We’ve got homeless veterans who might need a taxi fare to go for medical appointments or, like, I’m losing my eyesight, so some of this money goes to help with either glasses or buying electronic magnifiers so I can see to read and things like that.

“It helps other veterans who may have an unexpected bill that they can’t pay or something like that. There’s many homeless Vietnam veterans and Afghanistan veterans and Iraq veterans who are homeless so this goes into that sort of welfare.”

Emerald RSL welfare officer Chris May said they have taken a different approach this year to selling the poppies, starting a few weeks early to place boxes in local cafes, supermarkets and shops.

“So normally how it’s done is a face to face interaction with the RSL volunteers but with the Covid restrictions and whatnot, we weren’t able to do that. So we had to adapt to the situation and do what we could,” he said.

Mr May said ever since World War I, soldiers have returned home wounded, with diseases or ill and the funds raised through the Anzac Day Appeal and the Poppy Appeal continue to support those in need.

This year’s Poppy Appeal, Mr May said is crucial for veterans as young as in their 20s who have returned home and have been struggling through the pandemic.

Mr May said Emerald RSL has been trying over the last few months to include and place emphasis on the peacekeeping wars fought since Vietnam, like Rwanda, Somalia, Sinai, Egypt, East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan.

“There’s a lot of work being done in trying to engage with and support those veterans and their families because they often feel like the forgotten ones.”

Emerald will once again be “painted red with poppies” from 1 November, a small way of bringing Flanders Field to the town.

Mr Ford said every year for the last 25 years he has been selling poppies for the appeal, something he says is his small way of helping fellow veterans.

“I enjoy this, this my little bit to help our veteran community,” he said.

“I’m overwhelmed with the support that I get from the community in the Yarra Valley and Monbulk area.”

Mr May said Emerald RSL will be hosting a small service but more importantly, as the bugle sounds at 11am, he hopes wherever people are, they will stop and remember the service and sacrifice made by Australians from all generations.

Having been restricted with what they were able to do last year, Mr Ford said it is such a relief to know Remembrance Day commemorations will be able to go ahead.

“Anzac Day this year was just out of this world for us all to be able to do it and Remembrance Day is going to be the same.”

“We can’t forget our service personnel.

We’re one big family and they sacrificed a lot for what we’ve got today.”

Residents urged to join fight against Indian Mynas

By Renee Wood Yarra Ranges, Cardinia and Knox councils are joining forces to reduce the Indian myna bird population which is creating biodiversity havoc across the south east.

An online webinar was held on Thursday 28 October where Darebin Parklands Head Ranger Peter Wiltshire was a guest speaker to share his knowledge of the pest bird and how it displaces native species.

It’s hoped those who watched the webinar will join a voluntary community action group to help solve the Indian myna problem.

Mr Wiltshire, who’s been a ranger for 40 years, has been researching the myna’s behaviour for decades after noticing Eastern Rosella numbers decreasing.

“We have 155 nest boxes throughout Darebin Parklands, but the problem is the Indian mynas invade the boxes and so we decided that we would trap them and reduce the population,” he explained.

“We’ve court over 1500 birds out of our park and that changed the biodiversity dramatically, but they remain a threat and we decided that we wanted to research the behaviour of the birds to understand it.”

The bird from Southern Asian was first brought to the country in 1863 to Werribee, Victoria to help control insect pests.

However, it is now prolific through suburbia in Australia’s south east causing great harm to other bird populations.

“If you watch the video you’ll see how tenacious and how good they are at problem solving, when we saw this [the bird finding its way into a ‘myna proof’ bird box] we were quite distraught to be honest with you.

“When we saw that we thought we need to understand the capacity of these birds, so we set up a network of trials.”

The videos went on to show several ways that the myna was still able to get into the nest box and take over the nest.

Several videos were distressing, showing the myna breaking other birds eggs and

throwing chicks out - the true nature of the destructive bird.

“As you can see, they bust the eggs up and then they take them outside. They don’t eat them or anything, they just drop them outside. We’ve found evidence of eggs and chicks at the base of trees, with tree hollows and our nest boxes.

“We tried every combination, every paper we read said how you could stop mynas getting in - we found that if you designed a box that could stop mynas, it stopped everything, and there is no solution to it other than to make sure if you put boxes out then to patrol quite regularly and secondly, if you do put boxes up that you keep the holes to a smaller

size so the mynas can’t get in.”

Also part of the webinar was discussing how residents can use traps to capture the bird and humanely dispose of them to reduce their numbers.

“If you’re going to trap them, you’re best putting the trap somewhere as open as possible and where they can actually keep an eye on from a higher point, that seems to be the main thing. They’re also attracted to the colour red so the red dried pet food is one that seems to be more popular with them.

“Regarding euthanizing we’ve used cervical dislocation. It’s basically breaking the neck and we’re obliged to be humane with these animals to kill them instantly as best we can.

Mr Wiltshire recommended residents don’t feed chickens scraps and switch to pellets, also don’t leave pet food out which attracts the birds and plant more native trees to reduce wide open spaces for mynas to feed on.

They are also known to nest in roof tiles and open eaves, with residents encouraged to block up holes to stop them roosting.

“We have the opportunity to actually be part of a voluntary community action group. If what you’ve seen tonight really interests you, if you think you’d like to be a part of trying to solve the Indian myna problem that we’ve got across all our regions, then do fill out the surveys,” Jen Ellison, Environmental Volunteers Support Officer for Yarra Ranges Council said.

Outside of the cocoon Were you one of those who let your hair down on ‘Freedom Friday’?

I didn’t celebrate it as I was too busy trying the retrieve information and data from my phone which was lost a week ago, then found flattened by X number of cars. However I did a ‘big freedom trip’ (WHOOPEE) across to Healesville for Sunday lunch with some of my family.

WOW it all looked new and it was a lovely drive. That was my first real sniff of freedom from a daily 4.5 km drive to a coffee van.

Interestingly, freedom for some can be a scary thing with fear of what lies outside of home. (Which was the lockdown capital of our then known world.) Many of us where locked in there for a world record time.

Having been locked down for that time, some of us are experiencing strange feelings.

In long past eras being incarcerated in prison meant being thrown into a dark dungeon, with no light and no orientation.

A book on my shelves tells the story of a young Christian pastor, being horrifically treated in a terrible prison in China at the turn of this century, simply for being a Christian. For decades before 100s of 1000s were eliminated as the church was persecuted. A lot of that time in prison, he lay naked on a bare concrete floor and was thrown scraps of food and each time the guards walked past, they urinated on him. When released he came out, jubilant and refreshed in his faith and like Mandela, refusing to be bitter.

For those wanting an outing in the city, State Library Victoria (SLV) will reopen on Wednesday 3 November, although the Russell Street Welcome Zone and Readings bookshop will stay shut until January 2022. Masks will remain mandatory inside the library at all times.

All visitors to SLV will also need to checkin using the Services Victoria app and provide proof that they are fully vaccinated, either with a digital certificate or a printed copy of it. We are just in time to view SLV’s first Window on Collections display, the “Rural and Regional Photography Commission”. It features a selection of 30 photographs highlighting the lived experiences of rural and regional Victorians in 2020, during the devastating bushfire season and then the COVID global pandemic.

These images shed light on local stories of courage, loss and resilience, captured by photographers from rural and regional communities with which they each share a deep and personal connection. Many of them feature Victoria’s unsung heroes, from frontline workers such as nurses, firefighters and supermarket staff, to parents doing homeschooling and those helping neighbours and strangers alike.

Another exhibition worth seeing at SLV is “The Changing Face of Victoria”, which explores the spirit of activism and invention and its impact on our modern state. There are everyday themes – water, workers’ rights, camping and coffee – with more than 150 objects, artworks and photographers carefully curated to showcase some of the ways we can all make a difference in shaping our world.

Many of our older readers have created a cocoon type world to protect themselves from the ‘big new bad world’ out there, so that when they do come out they find they are not free at all, as the cocoon has now taken on another form – another prison?.

Now we find the battle through the ‘Brain Fog’ is entrenched and seems permanent.

Without exaggeration and with scientific backing, these psychological states are now bordering on a form of PTSD. (We have gone through the trauma, now we are dealing with the stress of the disorder) I would let my readers down if I didn’t bring some encouragement from the book of life; the maker’s manual.

Behind the 1812 theatre The production of a play ,for instance, at The 1812 Theatre involves far more people than just the actors on the stage. If you enter a theatre to see a production at The 1812 Theatre the first is a greeting and the giving of a program and then onto the bar for a drink or a chocolate. These people are all volunteers, and they help to make the evening a pleasurable visit.

Do you perhaps wonder about the sets, the lighting, the changing of sets, the movement on and off stage by the cast?

Yes, there are people backstage who organise the sets, the lighting and the movement on and off.

Why do they do it?

It is an extremely rewarding experience, it builds lifelong friendships, it enables them to utilise existing skills as well as developing new skills. And they enjoy being part of the production.

Set Building: No production is complete without the set suiting the play. The building of said set involves design, painting, carpentry, furniture restoration, and electrical work.

Experienced chippies, electricians, designers are always welcome along with people who are eager to lend a hand and don’t mind getting a little grubby.

While the sets are being built, costumes have to be made. Working with the director this means machine and hand sewing and fitting of outfits on the actors.

Backstage: This involves the changes made to the sets on stage during the performance. This could range from providing an empty cup to a critical time before they go onstage to changes of scene between acts while the

If you can tiptoe in the darkness and enjoy the adrenaline rush of being involved in a live performance without being an actor then this is for you.

Front of House: This is the face of The 1812 Theatre, you could be the lovely lady or gent who greets you at the door with a program and welcomes you to the theatre. Then off to the bar for a drink prior to the show and then into the theatre guided by ushers showing you to your seat.

Techcrew/bio box: The designers choreograph the lighting and sound as part of the preparation of the play. The technical crew and biobox operate the sound and lighting during the performance and you could be working with special effects.

As you see much more goes on behind the scenes that most people don’t realise.

The 1812 Theatre is always looking for volunteers, so this is a good way to make new friends, learn new skills and perhaps if you are a newcomer to Ferntree Gully it is another way to get to know your community.

Now of course, our being shut out of many aspects of our lives, really does not compare with the suffering those poor men and women went through, but many of us have gone through deep grief and sufferings of different kinds.

“During lockdown, we’ve had to get creative with how we treat heel pain” say local podiatrists Ryan Cornwall and Jasmine Jones.

They’re part of a team of podiatrists and physiotherapists who’ve developed an online program for assessing heel pain.

We spoke with Jasmine and Ryan at one of their podiatry clinics in Monbulk to find out just how our feet have been coping and how podiatry is able to help.

“Heel pain is by far the most common injury that happens to the foot and ankle” says Ryan.

By Parker McKenzie Monbulk Cricket Club is looking to field a women’s team for the first time by launching three free clinics for potential players.

The club has never had a women’s team before, which is something they want to change for the 2021/22 season.

Chris Devina from Monbulk Cricket Club said the three zero commitment clinics are being ran as a fun social event for any women interested in trying cricket.

“We are approaching it with three have a go clinics, which is the best to describe them, as well as gaining an understanding the skills

base from the girls and ladies who are interested,” Chris said.

“We’ve registered a team already. There is a little bit of risk attached to that because we don’t know how many girls we’ve got, but we’ve got interest and whether that interest comes to fruition I don’t know.

“The plan is to develop this group into a team for one day competitions, and then hopefully use it to launch a women’s program for years to come.”

Chris said the club is committed to making the experience as inclusive and welcoming as possible for any potential players.

“We acknowledge that the girls will be entering into a male dominated sport, and they are also entering into a club that has essentially been male dominated, and we are conscious of that,” he said.

“We’ve got dedicated change room facilities for girls and womens, dedicated women’s uniforms because the last thing a girl wants to do is come and play cricket in clothes designed for men, and we’ve got dedicated coaches who can help coach girls and women in an inclusive environment.”

Interested players can join the first come and try clinic on Sunday 31 October from 12pm at the Monbulk main ground.

Knox City Council have waived hire, license and lease fees for community non-for profit sports teams with a lease in a council facility.

Sporting teams in Boronia, Ferntree Gully, the Basin and the Knox City area will be able to access the stage 5 relief packages.

The package will include waiving all hire, license and lease fees for community groups in a Council building until 31 December 2021, and Pro-rate hire charges from Jan 2022 depending on State Government restrictions on community sport.

Boronia Hawks Football Netball Club has benefited from the relief package.

“Thank you to Knox City Council for their tremendous support during the last two years of the pandemic,” the club posted on Facebook.

“Through grants funding and waiving of fees, landscape improvements and facilities upgrades, the councillors and council officers have helped the club get through the tough times.”

Primary schools to receive hundreds of tennis racquets The ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow has returned to Victoria, celebrating a major milestone with the 200,000th racquet set to be gifted to one lucky first-year primary school student over the coming months.

Thanks to ANZ, the successful initiative will see 30,000 new racquets delivered to students in more than 700 primary schools across the country. This builds on the 170,000 racquets distributed across the country over the past five years.

As part of the initiative, Tennis Australia ambassadors Todd Woodbridge, John Fitzgerald and Casey Dellacqua will pop into schools virtually to inspire students to pick up their new racquets and swing into action. Some states will also enjoy live visits from local ambassadors.

The fifth edition of the ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow comes as new survey data shows that 92 per cent of Australian parents surveyed believe children should learn tennis from a young age. The desire for children to partake in sport and physical activity is particularly relevant, as nearly half of parents surveyed say they are concerned their families are not as fit when compared to the start of the pandemic.

From 2020 to 2021, tennis has seen a surge in popularity due to the sport’s Covid-safe nature, with court bookings up by 209 per cent year-on-year. As a socially distanced sport enjoyed outdoors, tennis has been tipped as one of the best ways to exercise safely.

Two thirds of those surveyed said they would be more likely to try a new sport if they knew it was considered Covid-safe.
