For 262 days, metropolitan Melbourne faced the toughest and longest lockdown in the world, making the taste of freedom sweeter than ever.

Cafes, restaurants and bars, as well as hairdressers, were the first to emerge from the stay-at-home orders, as the restrictions placed on people lifted on Friday 22 October.

Hills residents didn’t waste any time getting back to normality, making bookings for breakfast, lunch and dinner wherever they could get in.

But while the excitement for patrons was obvious, restaurant owners and cafe managers said the stress of density limits, policing vaccinations and staffing, had made the return to dining-in quite stressful.

Andrew from The Belgrave Hotel said his bookings for the first weekend out of lockdown were full but he was limited by the density restraints.

“I think people are still a little bit scared to get out but we’ve got some good bookings for tonight (22 October) and tomorrow night because we can basically only have 20 inside and it’s very important for us to stick to these rules,” he said.

Alan from Ranges at Olinda said aside from checking whether every customer has had a double dose of the vaccine, he doesn’t have enough staff who have been fully vaccinated to operate completely.

“Our difficulty is that some of our crew have only had the one vaccination and are waiting for the second one to come on board and we can’t open as such for seated people unless all of the staff are fully vaccinated,” he said.

State to open up After record vaccination rates that will soon see Victoria become one of the most vaccinated places in the world, the state is set on a path back to normal living resembling our preCovid lives.

The Victorian Government announced Sunday 24 October the outline of what life will be like as the state hits 80 per cent and 90 per cent double dose targets.

Premier Daniel Andrews said, “Victorians have met this challenge beyond any of our expectations and these vaccination rates are an incredible achievement. We’re on our way to being one of the most vaccinated – and therefore one of the safest – places in the entire world.”

Victoria will reach its 80 per cent double dose vaccination milestone almost a week ahead of schedule, on Friday 29 October.

When we reach our 90 per cent double dose milestone – predicted to be as early as 24 November – a significant easing of all major restrictions will occur.

With so many Victorians between the ages of 12 and 15 having raced to get the jab, our 80 per cent double vaccination milestone will come early.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer has determined that on Friday 29 October at 6:00pm, Victoria will move forward in opening up and more restrictions will fall away.

Regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne will unite and move forward on the same restrictions, enabling people from Mel-

bourne to travel to regional Victoria and interstate again.

Most indoor settings, including restaurants, pubs, gyms and hairdressers will open with no caps subject to a DQ4 (1 per 4sqm) limit, if all staff and patrons are fully vaccinated. Most outdoor settings will remain at DQ2 (1 per 2sqm) limit up to 500, where staff and patrons are fully vaccinated.

These indoor and outdoor settings will also apply to weddings, funerals and religious gatherings if all attendees are fully vaccinated.

Caps of 30 people will apply for weddings, funerals and religious gatherings if vaccination status is unknown.

Entertainment venues will reopen. For indoor seated venues including cinemas and theatres, there will a 75 per cent capacity or DQ4 up to 1,000 people and for non-seated indoor entertainment venues there will be a DQ4 limit with no patron cap.

Outdoor seated and non-seated entertainment venues including stadiums, zoos and tourism attractions will be open with a DQ2 limit up to 5,000 where staff and patrons are fully vaccinated.

Events – such as music festivals – will be able to host up to 5,000 attendees, subject to any restrictions related to the venue.

The Chief Health Officer may also grant an approval for larger crowds for significant events and venues under the Public Events Framework.

Masks will remain mandatory indoors but

are no longer required outdoors. It is highly recommended you continue to wear a mask outdoors where you cannot physically distance, such as busy street or outdoor market.

The next milestone in the Roadmap will be when Victoria hits the 90 per cent double dose vaccination target for Victorians 12 years and over – predicted to be as early as Wednesday 24 November.

At this point, caps or density quotients will be removed for all settings, and masks will only be mandatory indoors in some high-risk settings such as hospitals, aged care, public transport and justice and correctional facilities.

There will be no restrictions for indoor and outdoor events provided they follow COVIDSafe rules including vaccination requirements.

Events with significant numbers of children may not be able to operate at full capacity while vaccines remain unavailable for children. There will be some caps for religious ceremonies, weddings and funerals where vaccination status is unknown.

Mr Andrews said, “We made a deal with the Victorian community – we asked them to get vaccinated and promised that when they did, we would open up and begin to live alongside the virus. Today we are delivering on that promise.”

A woman has been injured at a private residence in Mount Dandenong after a hazardous tree fell and crushed the lower half of her body.

Bushfire Recovery Victoria (BRV) said it was notified of the incident at the Helen Street residence around 4.30pm on Monday 18 October.

“It is understood the incident occurred whilst contractors were working to treat a hazardous tree at the property,” a BRV spokesperson said.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were in attendance and transported the woman in her 50s to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition with lower body injuries.

“Emergency services, including Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria, and WorkSafe Victoria were immediately notified and attended the site,” the BRV spokesperson said.

“An investigation into the incident is now underway and support has been offered to the woman’s partner.”

Bike stolen A 10-year-old’s bike has been stolen from a home in Emerald.

The bike was nicked from the carport of a residence on Steele Road between 11 and 12 October.

The bicycle is a 2021 Apollo Trail 10 mountain bike and is army-green in colour.

Highway Patrol report It has been a busy first weekend out of lockdown on our roads for Yarra Ranges Highway Patrol, as people got back to work and enjoyed some freedoms.

A 42-year-old male driver was detected speeding at 90 km/h in a 60 km/h zone on Glenfern Road in Ferntree Gully.

He also returned a positive Preliminary Breath Test (PBT) for alcohol and accompanied police for an Evidentiary Breath Test (EBT), showing a positive result.

The driver also returned a positive result for illicit drugs, he had no alcohol interlock in his vehicle and was breaching a zero alcohol condition.

He will be charged on summons with all matters, resulting in a lengthy licence cancellation if convicted.

On Hughes Road in Upwey, a 72-year-old unlicenced male was detected driving an unregistered vehicle with false number plates and is to be charged with all matters.

In Belgrave South, a 36-year-old male driver returned a positive result for illicit drugs and received a $545 penalty notice, with a sixmonth licence suspension.

A 20-year-old male international licence holder detected speeding at 96 km/h in a 50 km/h zone on Belgrave-Hallam Road in Belgrave.

He received a $772 penalty notice with a six-month disqualification from driving in Victoria.

Escaping to the Dandenong Ranges

By Mikayla van Loon The itch to get away from home, travel further than a limited kilometre radius and experience the outdoors is far greater than it ever was before with this lockdown coming to an end.

The Dandenong Ranges have so much to offer by exploring the natural wonders of the many parks and reserves but a number of popular tourist destinations are still closed because of the storms.

Places like the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens saw 78,500 people visit between August and November in 2019 and Parks Victoria ranger team leader Terence Moon said he expects visitors will be eager to return.

“Parks Victoria is expecting our spring loving visitors to return to the gardens with the easing of Covid restrictions,” he said.

The beauty of the Botanic Gardens is it is forever changing with the seasons, blooming all year round depending on the climate.

But most visitors flock each year to see the 15,000 rhododendrons, 12,000 azaleas, 3,000 camellias and 250,000 daffodils draped in colour during spring and autumn.

“It is one of seven Dandenong Ranges Gardens properties, a diverse group of gardens with significant botanic, heritage and tourism value,” Mr Moon said.

“As always, staff are excited to welcome Melburnians back into the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens and celebrate their commitment to keeping each other safe by following COVID-19 restrictions.

“We hope our visitors enjoy the outstanding display of rhododendrons and other

spring flowering plants.”

Although the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens, R.J Hammer Arboretum and Eagle’s Nest Picnic Ground have reopened to the public, Parks Victoria district manager Victoria Purdue said even if it looks safe, rocks, trees and soil may continue to move from the wet weather.

“As the days grow warmer and wildflowers start to bloom across our landscape, we’d encourage visitors to prioritise their safety, respect nature and rangers who are continuing to clear severe storm damage at the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges,” she said.

“While local rangers have cleared more than 100 kilometres of roads, walking trails and picnic grounds throughout the district, closures and essential works at key locations such as the 1000 Steps (Kokoda Memorial Track) and William Ricketts Sanctuary will need to continue into 2022 as debris is cleared and hazardous trees assessed and made safe.”

Ms Purdue said it is important for visitors to honour site closures and to read the signage even with park rangers conducting patrols to ensure people remain safe.

Parks Victoria is also working collaboratively with Victoria Police and Yarra Ranges Council in anticipation of increased visitation in the region over coming weeks.

Frightening cancellation

By Mikayla van Loon The much loved Halloween on the Green has had to bow out again for 2021, leaving organisers disappointed for a second year in a row.

Hosted by the Philanthropic Collective, the festival invites people to dress up in their best and most Halloween-esque costumes and explore how death is celebrated by different religions and cultures.

Festival creator Andrew Fillip-Gautier said due to the ongoing pandemic, the uncertainty and a funding shortfall the festival cannot go ahead.

“It comes as a huge blow to the organising committee who has worked behind the scenes on alternate planning protocols and explored many avenues to try and host the event,” he said.

After last year’s cancellation, Mr FillipGautier had big plans for this year’s festival which is held at the Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve in Sassafras.

Mr Fillip-Gautier said there was a huge entertainment line-up of local entertainers, stall holders, rides operators, venue managers, local schools, and community groups.

Meant to be gracing the main stage was

Charlie Bedford, The Bean Project, Daisy West and for the very first time, rock royalty, Clare Moore and Dave Graney.

An array of activities had also been planned including free carnival rides, a trick or treat trail, Sim Sala Bim, Circus Ruccis, Day of the Dead stilt walkers and roving Fun Arts Mariachi band.

Mr Fillip-Gautier said all major sponsors and supporters, along with local businesses who are the financial backbone of the event have pledged their support for 2022.

The group remain committed to building on the body of work already accomplished as

they turn their attention to ensure Halloween on the Green 2022 will be bigger and better than ever before with loads of extra surprises in store.

“It remains our greatest hope that we will be able to host the event once again in 2022 where the true spirit of community inclusion for all will finally be at one once again. Happy Halloween to all,” Mr Fillip-Gautier said.

Award winning garden gets federal funding

We’re getting ready for summer.

By Mikayla van Loon The recreation of Phillip Johnson’s award winning garden will start taking shape in coming weeks, with more funding from the Federal Government just announced for the project.

A further $2.2 million from the Building Better Regions Fund will be put towards the construction of Mr Johnson’s Best in Show garden from the 2013 Chelsea Flower Show.

The project is one of four for the Yarra Ranges area and Casey MP Tony Smith announced on Friday 8 October the collaboration between Phillip Johnson Landscapes, People and Parks Foundation and the Dandenong Range Botanic Gardens would be receiving further funding.

Part of Mr Johnson’s vision is to ensure the garden fits in with the existing landscape and can be used as a bushfire prevention system by the CFA. Having received this extra funding towards the garden, Mr Johnson is expected to start building the award winning garden very soon.

A cash splash for shade More Monbulk students will be protected from the sun’s damaging rays after the Victorian Government provided funding for more shade in school playgrounds and outdoor areas.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino MP announced two schools in Monbulk will share in over $1.3 million of funding from the latest round of the School Shade Grants program.

“It’s great for kids to spend time playing outdoors and keeping active. These grants mean local school children can still enjoy the outdoors while having the necessary shade to be protected from the sun,” James Merlino said.

The program provides grants to build new shade structures, repair existing structures, or create natural shade by planting trees. Funding is also provided to purchase sun protective items including hats and sunscreen.

The children, teachers and families of the Patch Primary School will receive $24,647.50 to install a shade sail structure over the play area that is utilised by 3 classrooms, for play, group work, eating lunch and gardening.

This space is currently utilised 7 days a week by students, nearby kinder, families and the community.

The Patch Primary School has a strong emphasis on nature-based learning. The Patch Primary runs a Forest Classroom program every week - this program brings together year 5 students and kinder children to spend time outdoors learning in nature. It is a unique and valued program that relies on a range of outdoor learning spaces that are naturally protected from sun and rain.

The children, teachers and families of Kallista Primary School will get $700 to purchase 50 bucket hats for the incoming prep class of 2022, and 7, 1 litre bottles of sunscreen.

Childhood and adolescence are critical periods during which exposure to UV radiation is more likely to contribute to skin cancer later in life. Schools play an important role teaching effective sun smart behaviours from an early age.

Shade alone can reduce overall exposure to UV radiation by up to 75 per cent when used in combination with other sun protection strategies such as sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and protective clothing.

In 2018, melanoma was the fifth most common cancer in Victoria with 3,096 new cases diagnosed and sadly 291 deaths.

“Skin cancer is one of the most preventable forms of cancer in Australia. It’s important we give Victorians the protection they need to stay sun smart.”

The School Shade Grant program is complemented by the Community Shade Grants program, which provides shade for community organisations. The outcome of the current round of the Community Shade Grants will be announced soon.

“Our grants programs have helped hundreds of schools and community groups provide the protection Victorians need to prevent cancer. Now even more children in our area will be shielded from the sun’s harmful rays.”

It forms part of the Government’s ambitious Victorian Cancer Plan 2020-24 which sets out a target to halve the proportion of Victorians diagnosed with preventable cancers by 2040.

This year, they’ve had 9,000.

“Term 1 this year was gangbusters,” Anthony said.

“But now there are 5500 staff sitting on disaster payments waiting for the information as to when they will return to work.

“The looming fear is that two weeks after the state reaches 80 per cent fully vaccinated that the disaster payments for our staff will disappear and we will still have no clear direction from the government.

“Not only does it affect 195 camps across Victoria and 450 licenced tour operators but there is a cost to the community on the mental health of students.”

A leading outdoor education provider based in Gembrook is calling on the State Government to help the industry get back on its feet post-lockdown.

Anthony Hall, managing director of Hall’s Outdoor Education, said like many industries, those who provide outdoor education and camp services to schools had been severely impacted by Covid-19 in the last 18 months.

“As soon as schools shut down, we’re out of business,” Anthony said.

“It’s been tragic on the industry.”

But Anthony said there is yet to be any clear directives from the State Government on when they will be able to operate again.

“What the industry is seeking is to be added to the roadmap for release, for example to be open when the state reaches 80 per cent full vaccination, and for this to be announced soon so that camps and schools can plan to be on camp,” Anthony said.

“You need time to organise permission forms, have medical forms returned and sort out dietary information.”

Anthony said schools are “knocking down the doors” to book into camps before the school year is over.

“However, with the current government lack of information we are unable to confirm or reject schools’ ability to attend,” he said.

“Unfortunately, because the Health Department and the Education Department have not linked a return to camp to the roadmap we are no closer to knowing when we can return to camps.”

The O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail between Mount Donna Buang Road and Cement Creek Road in the Yarra Ranges National Park has reopened, as well as the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Gardens.

Over the course of the lockdown, Alan said the community had been extremely supportive, something he was very grateful for.

“I just want to thank all of the local people that have been supportive throughout this trying time, that have popped in and had their coffee and picked up their coffee. They’ve been very supportive, that really makes a difference.

“We just take baby steps and we just keep on working on it and I think at the end of the day, we will all be back hopefully, and everyone will be happy.”

Food forum The Cardinia Community Food Forum will be held online on Tuesday 9 November and will include a range of guests, speakers and panel discussions. Birthday cheer for icon

By Mikayla van Loon He’s Belgrave’s very own urban legend but the man behind the clothes is just that, a man who has lived an extraordinary life.

At 92 years old, celebrating a birthday with friends and strangers on Friday 22 October, Baba Desi is humble and generous but hasn’t lost the fire inside him to fight for what is right.

“I believe in good things for Australia and Australian people,” he said.

“I’ve done a lot for people around the streets which I do because I believe in humanity, I believe in love of humanity.”

As an activist, Des has spent his life protesting and drawing attention to the issues that matter.

Seeing Des cloaked in colour, carrying a staff, he is hard to miss but he chooses to dress as he does to draw attention to himself so then he can draw attention to the issues of the world.

Even though time has passed, Des said those issues still remain, particularly the overtaking of small business by corporations.

Pauline Klemm has been documenting Des’s life through photographs for nearly a year and from that, a beautiful friendship sprouted.

“I just put up things about his life just to let people know the man behind the public figure,” she said.

“It’s very obvious that they’re very strong feelings of protection towards Des in the local community, they are very protective of him.”

Originally from Warrnambool, Des said he loves this part of the world because of the trees and they are the lifeblood of the Hills.

“We’ve got trees and the trees protect us from all this, they give us our oxygen, they protect us in every way. I don’t like to see them come down because they do all of this for us and we don’t appreciate it,” he said.

Pauline said Des triggers memories of childhood for a lot of people and Des, even at 92 years of age, continues to walk three to four kilometres a day from Belgrave to Tecoma.

As a nurse, Pauline has seen many 92 year olds in her time but she said it’s not very often they are as healthy as Des.

Friends came together on Friday 22 October to celebrate Des’s birthday.

Sitting at the coffee table on the Main Street of Belgrave, basking in the sunshine, Des still managed to say hello and wish passersby a good day.

“It’s the way he makes people feel, it’s the way he greets them, he’s always happy and it’s just the way he treats people,” Pauline said.

When asked to describe Des in one word, Pauline said he is passionate without a doubt.

“He’s passionate about his community. He

doesn’t have a lot of contact with his family so the community up here is really his family.”

“He’s very passionate about the local community, especially about small business and the effect globalisation and corporations have.”

“He is very big on speaking your mind for the individual but together, we can come together and make a difference. Standing up for your rights, standing up for yourself.”

Working on a Will Making a Will might be something you haven’t given much thought to, but it is one of the most important things we can do to protect the people and possessions we care about.

It is estimated that more than half of all Australians do not have a current and valid Will that reflects their wishes. People without a Will are leaving themselves and their families at risk of significant unintended problems later.

For example, quirks in the law could mean that assets of couples without children will not be divided evenly between their surviving family members or that family members who have greater needs are not properly provided for.

At the very least, it can mean that difficult financial and legal issues need to be discussed and negotiated by close family members during a time of grief and sadness.

A Will gives you the chance to make decisions about things that are important to you.

This could include your wishes around the guardianship of children, care of pets, who will

Hidden gem of a theatre Kemp’s curtain call Like many other community theatres, in 2013 a group of theatre friends got together to agree on a type of theatre they would like to have in the Lilydale area, forming ARK Theatre Inc. They were offered a chance to present a show at the Lilydale Heights College Performing Arts Centre.

A remarkable centre with one of the largest stages width wise in the local theatre circuit.

This can lead to some difficulties but Ark soon overcame these little problems.

The company produces a variety of productions ranging from radio plays, pantomime, one act plays, short play festivals, musicals, cabaret style shows as well as traditional theatre.

As the theatre is part of the school, rehearsals can be held twice a week but sets and plays can only be put on during school holidays.

Each year Ark Theatre holds a One Act Play Festival. This is well attended with companies from across Victoria putting on shows. Your correspondent has had the privilege of attending these shows and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Ark Theatre began with Mission Statement and a set of values which is underlying and paramount to the unique nature of Ark Theatre.

Two younger members got together and founded YouthARK and have produced several successful productions.

Although the theatre is relatively new the members are all experienced in local theatre and the company is certainly one not to be missed.

The theatre has a good foyer and a bar as you enter. In the Festivals this is very popular and also food is available. You are welcomed by the front of house staff on entry, and this makes a great feeling to be welcomed and to enjoy the overall evening.

Of course, Ark Theatre, like all local theatres, is subject to Covid-19 lockdown so watch this column for news on the company reopening.

Vampire movie sucked dry Night Teeth Starring Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Debby Ryan and Lucy Fry Rated MA15+ Night Teeth is a bland, toothless horror-thriller.

Benny (Jorge Lendeborg Jr.), a student and chauffeur, must drive two vampire women around Los Angeles.

Night Teeth has solid performances, Benny grows more bold and assertive as the night progresses, and he has a touching bond with Blaire (Debby Ryan), the kinder of the two vampires. However, this bond is offset by the unavoidable fact of both vampires – not just Zoe (Lucy Fry), the cruel one – being murderous monsters.

Like Bright, a Netflix urban fantasy film from 2017, Night Teeth has extremely vague world-building. The plot is driven by a nebulous conflict between humans and vampires, but the broken truce, the supernatural social structure and even the villain’s plans are incredibly poorly-defined.

A bad script, limp suspense and lazy worldbuilding can be forgiven in a B-movie if it has good action, but Night Teeth has hardly any action scenes whatsoever. For that matter, the only decent fight scene is moronically shown in the background of the scene.

Alfie Allen leaves no impression as the blandly posh main villain, and Night Teeth updates the traditionally aristocratic portrayal of vampires in popular culture with a tacky neon party aesthetic.

Night Teeth is available for streaming on Netflix, but you deserve a scarier, better-made horror movie for Halloween.

All about storytelling and healing PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN Written by renowned Indigenous Australian storyteller Boori Monty Pryor and beautifully illustrated by Rita Sinclair, Story Doctors is about storytelling as a way of healing. Not just to heal relations between peoples and communities, but also our relations with ourselves.

Pryor had a long career communicating Indigenous Australian culture to school students and adult groups throughout Australia. He performed dances, played didgeridoo, told stories and even acted in film and television, before turning to writing books.

Many know of Pryor’s Shake a Leg, a celebration of food, dance and cultural understanding that won the 2011 Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Children’s Fiction. Others know him as the creator, writer and narrator of Wrong Kind of Black, the Australian web/TV show nominated for an International Emmy Award for Best Short Form Series in 2019.

But Pryor is also the inaugural Australian Children’s Laureate. His transition from storytelling, performing and dancing to writing is noteworthy, as he believes written words are meant to convey the wise voices of nature and culture, Stories are meant to heal. Hence “Story Doctors”: “The pharmacies abound, above and underground, green shoots so small, to trees so tall. Helps breathe in all our glories, the medicines in our stories.

That stony face, our storied place.”

Our land is full of stories. The “nature vs. nurture” debate aside, reader are encouraged to “drink the stories through your eyes” by observing the rhythms and rhymes of this land. Not just today’s beats and tones, but also yesterday’s melodies and hymns.

The colourful illustrations reveal how the ancient hills and sparkling creeks were turned into endless pastures grazed by livestock and scarred by fences and chains. There’s a hint of a name “King Billy”, which may refer to Jimmy Clements, an Indigenous elder from the Wiradjuri tribe who walked for nearly a week from Gundagai to Canberra to attend the opening of the Provisional Parliament House in 1927. When told to “move on” by police, Clements explained he was there to demonstrate his “sovereign rights to the Federal Territory”. It was the first recorded instance of Aboriginal protest at the Parliament.

Or, “King Billy” may refer to William Lanne, the last “full-blood” Indigenous Tasmanian. After his death in 1869, the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Royal Society of Tasmania fought over possession of Lanne’s remains. A local surgeon named William Crowther broke into the morgue and decapitated the corpse, before sending Lanne’s skull to London “for scientific purposes”. To make a long story short, Crowther later became Premier of Tasmania.

But surely these stories are not the focus of Story Doctors, because: “Doctor’s orders, there are no borders. When it comes to we as one, belonging’s said and done... Our future is the past. Will learning from it last?” Our task is to learn from the past and create positive visions for the future, because stories are meant to heal. I am a Francophile. I love French arts, culture and heritage. I am slowly learning the French language, and plan to visit France next year.

Tell us about your role as a director?

As a director creating new works, you need to have a cool head, warm heart and a sense of humour – as there will always be hiccups while filming and in post production – but somehow with a team approach, problem solving and listening to your intuition, it all comes together in the end.

What has been your most memorable moment in your time in your role? Why? In 2020, I was awarded a residency at a chateau in Normandy, France, for my original song submission called The Chateau. Winning a creative competition on the international stage affirmed my commitment to an artistic career. It has encouraged me to share more music, stories and film, which invoke joy, hope and connection in the lives of others.

What do you love most about living in the region?

I love the people. They are warm, friendly, kind, generous and laid back. I enjoy the arts scene, local markets and our quaint cafes, eateries and shops. The natural beauty all around – forests, lakes, farms, orchards and more – also make it a delight to live in this ‘neck of the woods’.

How are you keeping sane during lockdowns?

My daily walk immerses me in nature, and provides a space to think, pray and relax. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and neighbours – over the phone, the ‘fence’ or the internet – also helps to nurture and sustain a positive mindset.

What are some of your hobbies?

I enjoy walking, bike riding, swimming and

What event, past, present, or future, would you like to witness?

There are so many great musicians I would love to see perform from a bygone era such as The Beatles, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

However, right now, to experience the dulcet tones of a crooner in a New York jazz bar or the buzz of a Broadway show would be a little slice of heaven for me.

Who do you admire the most?

Mother Teresa. She is a universal mother and role model who left a legacy of kindness, generosity, humility, simplicity and hope. Mother Teresa made a courageous commitment to love life and each person she encountered.

Favourite book or movie you recommend?

My favourite book is The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse by Charlie Mackesy. It is a beautifully illustrated coffee table book, which addresses the theme of friendship in a gentle, heart-warming and humorous way. Even better, as a picture book – it’s a quick read – and somehow is enjoyed by everyone from two years old through to 102.

What is an important issue in the region you think needs exposure?

Loneliness needs to be addressed as a local and national issue, as it impacts negatively on people’s quality of life, health and wellbeing.

The pandemic escalated social isolation and disconnection. Many people realised how important meaningful relationships are for their sense of belonging, purpose and quality of life.

Now is the time to reconnect, participate and invest in the social fabric of our community, to ensure we thrive both individually and collectively.

By Gabriella Payne In an effort to raise awareness and funds for a cause close to her heart, one local jewellery maker is creating beautiful pieces that not only accessorise any look perfectly, but will also help make a difference to those living with a rare genetic condition.

October is Rett Syndrome Awareness month and in honour of this, Cockatoo’s Jessica Barkley is going above and beyond to help those impacted by the disorder - inspired by her beautiful niece Ella, who lives with the condition.

Almost exclusively affecting girls, Rett Syndrome is a rare genetic neurological disorder that leads to severe impairments and affects nearly every aspect of a child’s life; including their ability to speak, walk, eat and even breathe easily.

Having watched her seven-year-old niece Ella battle the condition almost her whole life, Ms Barkley said that it was a debilitating condition, but Ella was still such a beautiful and lively little girl, just like others.

“Basically, your body just starts to fail you,” Ms Barkley said.

“It’s not an input problem though - [those with Rett’s] still understand everything, but they just don’t have an output.”

“Ella is 7 now, and she can tell us whatever she wants using her eyes, she has no issue of understanding - she’s basically just like you and me but she doesn’t have the same physical capabilities,” she said.

Caused by mutations on the X chromosome, Rett Syndrome varies in severity from person to person and while those living with the condition rely on carers to help them in day to day life, many still live to middle age and beyond.

Ms Barkley, a young creative, has watched the condition take its toll on her niece over the years and decided that this year, she wanted to do something extra special to raise awareness.

“It’s very hard watching Ella regress, and it’s a scary thing to watch someone you love go through,” she said.

“There’s lots of trials and research going into possibly life changing things like improving the quality of life for girls with Rett’s, and I wanted to be able to do whatever I could to help.”

With this in mind, Ms Barkley came up with the idea of selling her beautiful homemade jewellery in order to raise funds and awareness for the condition - and to help Ella in her own way.

“Being in lockdown, obviously I couldn’t go over and spend time with her, so this is my way of doing something special for Ella,“ Ms Barkley said.

“I have made jewellery before but just as a little hobby, it was nothing serious, but I thought it might be a way to get the message across.”

Since sharing her fundraiser on local Facebook noticeboards, Ms Barkley has made countless pieces and managed to raise over $1,000 for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation - a fantastic achievement.

“I started doing this for October [being Rett

Syndrome awareness month], but I think this will be a forever thing for me now,“ she said.

Another creative friend has joined Ms Barkley and is now making purple scrunchies to sell for the fundraiser (as well as the handmade jewellery), with all proceeds going to help girls with Rett’s and research into the condition.

“I think offering the incentive of a gift in return has made a lot more people donate and pay attention to the fundraiser,” Ms Barley said.

“I just can’t believe the response I’ve gotten!”

Tale about animal friendship wins young writer award

By Mikayla van Loon Not many children know at his age what they want to do in the future but for Cruze Marsh from Boronia, becoming a writer seems like a pretty good path for him to take.

As the winner of RSPCA Victoria’s Pawsome Stories award for the Grade 3 and 4 creative writing category, Cruze’s passion for writing has only grown.

His award winning story told the tale of the friendship between dogs and cats Having written the story for school, Cruze said he was encouraged by his teachers to submit it for the competition.

Cruze’s mum Elise said she was extremely proud and it did come as quite a shock when his name was called out of 345 people who submitted stories.

“We didn’t expect he would win. It was a big surprise,” she said.

“He was just happy to be a finalist and he was jumping around, he’s still jumping around from excitement.”

Over 200 primary school students gathered online for the award ceremony on Thursday 14 October.

“It was super exciting and it was even more exciting because it was one of my favourite writers who announced the award,” Cruze said.

Cruze Marsh has taken out the Grade 3 and 4 creative writing category in the RSPCA’s Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS Pawsome Stories awards. 254822 Andy Griffiths, author of the award winning and very popular children’s Treehouse book series, presented the award to Cruze virtually.

Alongside Andy the judging panel was made up of fellow author Cameron Macintosh and RSPCA CEO Dr Liz Walker.

“The best part was meeting the judges, Andy Griffiths and Cam Macintosh, and Dr Liz Walker online,” Cruze said.

“We got to ask questions about what it would be like if we were to become an author and what it would be like to protect and look after animals.”

Pawsome Stories invites Victorian children in grades three to six to submit their work in either a creative or persuasive category.

This year’s theme for the creative category was focusing on rescuing animals, while the persuasive category focused on changing one thing in the world to improve animals’ lives.

Andy Griffiths said he was incredibly impressed with the calibre of the written work he reviewed.

“I loved reading all of the stories on the fictional story shortlist. They all demonstrated both great story-telling abilities and the willingness to escape our human-centric viewpoint and imagine what life might look like from the point of view of animals,” he said.

“This leap of imagination is vital in creating a kinder and more caring world for animals.”

Inspired by his love of dogs and cats, Cruze has his sights set on publishing more stories and he thought this would be a good place to start.

Currently he is working on a story called Danger Woods, a story of friendship and teamwork to overcome a tricky situation.

Now he gets to share his love for animals and his winning story with his classmates when they get a virtual barn tour of an RSPCA, where they get to see all the animals and learn more about what the RSPCA does to help abandoned or hurt animals. mailcommunity.com.au

Creatives share on film

By Renee Wood The Covid-19 pandemic has left its mark on the history books, remembered for its upheaval of society and changes to daily life.

The creative sector has been one of the biggest hit, faced with closed events, limiting community connections and a large move towards an online way of life.

But there has been times of opportunity and growth, with artists drawing on their creativity and natural surroundings to find strength and perseverance - and this is the story that’s being told through a new documentary about creative women in the Yarra Ranges.

Director Pearley Jones set out to archive this moment in time for creative women through a documentary, a project supported by the Yarra Ranges Council.

Now after months of filming and editing, the live launch of ‘Women Artists Documentary : Creative Ladies in the Hills and Valleys’ will be held on Wednesday 27 October.

Ms Jones said she’s excited to be sharing the film with the broader community.

“It’s been such a great team effort, we’ve had such wonderful artists participate in this project, and have also had a wonderful collaborative and if the watch for we need to share this, and we need to celebrate the story in collaboration with Yarra Ranges Councillors who have supported it with funding,” Ms Jones said.

Videographer Vanessa White worked with the director to capture five women and their stories - Alana Langan a Designer Stylist from Upwey, Clair Bremner an artist from Warburton, Nikki Browne an artist from Healesville, Claire Murray an floral designer from Belgrave and

“My vision for the documentary was to archive local artists experience of lockdown. I wanted to showcase raw talent because artists have been negatively impacted by lockdowns and in the Covid experience and I also wanted to showcase the beautiful area that we live in.”

But the documentary’s path also leads down a place of wellbeing and hopes to invites viewers to nurture their creativity.

“I’m encouraging people to consider their

own well being. That’s by investing in creativity, social connection in local communities, and also with nature, or other things that they love. There could be animals, it could be unique hobbies. But there are many ways you can create a life of happiness, even if that’s online at the moment, by considering your well being and giving it a priority.”

“I would encourage all people to embrace creativity, to express themselves, to self soothe, and to find joy. It’s not just an escape, I think it’s a genuine expression of your feelings and

emotion and it’s an opportunity to connect with other people and share your talents and your voice with other people.”

Upwey resident Alana Langan was filmed for the story and shared her story as a creative designer within her business Ivy Muse.

“It’s the silver lining, having something come from the pandemic that’s beautiful and hopefully sharing our work inspires other people and also normalises how we all felt through the pandemic as well. I think it’s a really beneficial reason to do something like this documentary,” Ms Langan said.

In the film, Ms Langan dives into how her family fed gratitude into their daily rituals and ‘just keep swimming’ became a mantra to live by.

“It’s super hard and it sucks, and sometimes you just want to go out and just have a normal life again, but it’s focusing on really being grateful one day at a time that got us through.”

Each of the five creative stars also addressed where they live and how nature and the Yarra Ranges plays a vital role in their work.

“Writing my recent book, it was all about cultivating well being at home with plants and it really is an expression of so much of what I have experienced here living in the hills.

“It’s about being able to have windows that you can see through clearly that you don’t have any furniture or any objects in the way so you can enjoy that view - it’s all of that kind of stuff that’s connected with nature and what your environment is around you, as well as connecting with plants indoors.”

The documentary will be available through the live launch on Instagram handle @pearleyjones on Wednesday 27 October at 6.30pm.

Melbourne’s citizen scientists celebrate 20 years One of Melbourne Water’s most popular volunteer programs has hopped to a major milestone this spring – marking its 20th anniversary.

The Frog Census is a community-based frog monitoring program established back in 2001. It uses data submitted by citizen scientists to help Melbourne Water teams track the health of the city’s frog populations, protect frog habitat areas and improve waterway health.

For the past two decades hundreds of frog loving volunteers have visited ponds, creeks, rivers and wetlands across Greater Melbourne to record a cacophony of frog calls - sharing their important data with Melbourne Water.

The intel has provided important extra information about the overall health and population trends of urban frogs.

Melbourne Water’s Waterwatch Coordinator James Frazer said almost 14,000 frog reports have been submitted by dedicated volunteers.

“Importantly, this amazing group of people have detected rare and endangered frogs such as the Growling Grass Frog, Southern

Toadlet and Bibron’s Toadlet at a number of Melbourne sites.

“Our communities have also been instrumental in helping identify priority locations for conservation efforts including improving habitat and water quality,” Mr Frazer said.

Five years ago the Frog Census underwent a digital transformation through the develop-

ment of the Frog Census App, and the creation of a thriving Frog Census Facebook Group.

There are now around 4000 users of the app via which an impressive 9000 frog croak recordings have been submitted to Melbourne Water.

“The Frog Census App has made our program even more accessible to the community

The endangered Growling Grass Frog has been spotted by the citizen scientists for the census. as it allows volunteers to simply open the app and press record to capture the sounds of frogs enjoying their habitats,” Mr Frazer said.

“Frogs can be found all over Melbourne and they play an important role in the waterway ecosystem. 20 years of frog census data proves this.

“And that’s a milestone everyone involved will be celebrating.”

Sealing the Hills roads Princess Avenue and Crichton Road in Emerald are the first roads in the Sealing the Hills project to be constructed with works set to commence later this month.

Sealing the Hills project is funded by $150 million from the Australian Government’s Sealing Roads in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounds program and co-funded by Cardinia Shire Council in partnership with landowners via a Special Charge Scheme.

This project will seal 109 kms of unsealed roads on 164 prioritised roads throughout the Cardinia Shire over the next eight years and falls under Council’s Better Local Roads Program.

Sealing the Hills’ road sealing works will include pavement construction, kerb channel construction (where appropriate), construction of traffic calming devices (where appropriate), drainage works, signage, guardrails and line-marking.

Cardinia Shire Mayor Councillor Brett Owen said upgrading unsealed roads under our Bet-

ter Local Roads Program would better connect motorists with the existing road network.

“These works will reduce environmental impacts and improve comfort and service levels for all road-users,” Cr Owen said.

Federal Member for La Trobe MP Jason Wood said the Morrison Government was proud to contribute $150 million to these vital infrastructure works which would improve safety and provide greater access to community facilities and amenities for all road-users.

“I took the proposal for an unsealed roads package to the Morrison Government to fix dangerous roads, particularly around the Dandenong Ranges. This $300 million package was a commonwealth first, as the Morrison Government understood that it was unfair to leave locals with poor roads that at the current rate, would have taken 100 years to fix. Thanks to this package, that wait has been reduced to eight years.”

“Unsealed roads are heavily impacted by weather conditions and increased traffic, particularly in the Dandenong Ranges. Constructing sealed roads in high use traffic areas will reduce the environmental impacts associated with unsealed roads, including run-off into waterways and the surrounding environment.”

“I thank Cardinia Shire Council for putting together this proposal and for working on the delivery of this incredible project to seal 109 kilometres of dangerous and unsealed roads which will ensure locals get home safer.”

The works are set to be completed early to mid-2022.

Hopeful of future funds

By Renee Wood The Yarra Valley Equestrian Park has been unsuccessful in its bid for the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund but the not-for-profit is hopeful next year will bring new opportunities to get phase one of the master plan off the ground.

Currently the Melba Highway site in Yering is being used by equestrian clubs and is owned by the Lilydale Hunters club, with a master plan created last year waiting to be put to work if funding comes through.

The latest funding federal submission was for phase one, that would see roads, parking, an indoor multi-purpose arena, a jumping arena, powered camping sites, cross country course, horse accommodation, clubhouse renovation and landscaping.

President Geoff Sinclair said close to $3 million dollars will be needed for the first stage and $1.25 million has already been pledged by clubs, riders, groups and businesses all keen to see the development.

“A quarter of a million dollars of our own funding has gone to prepare the economic studies and the plans, to get it to this point - it’s shovel ready,” Geoff Sinclair said.

“So really a government just needs to tick off on it and they’re going to build a world class regional equestrian center right here in the middle of the Yarra Valley that’s going to be here for our children and grandchildren to come.”

Once built it’s expected to be a huge asset for sport , currently 10,000 Yarra Ranges residents participate in Equestrian who have to travel to Werribee or Borneo for large competitions.

Mr Sinclair said riding for disability would also be a feature offering at the development, which currently has a 12 month waiting list and no local facility.

“If you think about women in sport, if you think about people from six years old to 70, riding for disability - there’s a tremendous life long thing in horses.

“This is a world class regional equestrian facility, we have an enormous benefit not only for 10,000 equestrians in the Yarra Valley, but an enormous tourism and sport economic impact.”

“The governments are really keen to get business back up and running, and infrastructure is one of those things. We hope we can fit into those state government tourism and sporting molds.”

“The only way we’re going to get the funding is if the Shire of Yarra Ranges and the state government and the federal government support it financially.

“And they have this highly unusual situation where the community clubs and individuals have already put in half the money.”

Cycling’s $6.3 billion contribution to the economy In an Australian first, a report spearheaded

by We Ride Australia has found that cycling’s direct industry output as part of the Australian economy was $6.3 billion in 2020, which includes $3.4 billion direct value added to Australia’s GDP. The WeRide Australian Cycling Economy Report by Ernst & Young (EY) has been launched by the Treasurer, the Hon. Josh Frydenberg MP from Parliament House in a virtual broadcast with Parliamentary cycling champions, Dave Sharma MP, Dr Hon. Andrew Leigh and Dr Helen Haines and supported by the international Cycling Executives community and a significant national audience.

It revealed the economic activity directly generated by bike riders, organisations, local and state government provision of infrastructure to events, research, and sport and recreational cycling.

Stephen Hodge, Director - National Advocacy for We Ride, said the report reconfirms cycling as an industry with a significant economic footprint and booming participation in Australia.

“As a large and diverse sector, bike riding touches almost every family in every community.”

David Larocca, EY Oceania CEO, said, “In a time when we are focusing on our economic recovery post-Covid, it has been great to see the work of our team again provide new data as part of the report on cycling’s economic contribution. Other key findings: Governments spent more than $428 million on cycling-related infrastructure and programs.

A total of $16.8 billion in direct and indirect economic contribution was identified, supporting 62,330 direct and indirect jobs nationally.

5.8 million (29 per cent) of Australian adults spent money on cycling related goods and services.

3.3 million Australians spent money on cycling and cycled at least once a week.

For all people who spent money on cycling, they spent an average of $990 each.

The majority of buyers had household incomes ranging from $50,000 - $150,000 per annum.

28 per cent of bicycles purchased were children’s bikes.

1.7 million bikes purchased in 2020, worth approximately $1.5 billion. $1.168 billion contribution from cycle tourism to the direct economic output.

While exercise and fitness were the most common reasons to ride a bike (82 per cent), 41 per cent of those surveyed cycled as a mode of transport – whether it was for work, school or to the shops.
