Cranbourne’s stage is set

By David Nagel The Cranbourne Turf Club is just weeks away from holding centre stage during Melbourne’s famous spring racing carnival after securing its first standalone date for its time-honoured home cup.

The $500,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup (1600m) will this year be run on Saturday, 13 November, the program holding Metropolitan status in Victoria and hosting the richest race to be run anywhere in Australia on the day.

This year’s edition of the Cranbourne Cup – which had a name change from the Cranbourne Handicap and was won by the Jack Holt-trained Tillius in 1927 – promises to be an event of rare quality and one not to be missed.

The traditional cup distance of 2025 metres has made way for an exciting 1600-metre race where some of the best milers in the country will head down the back straight at Cranbourne – parallel to the South Gippsland Highway – in search of the $300,000 first prize.

While premier country racing clubs like Cranbourne regularly spruik their cup days – this year, above all others, there is genuine reason to be excited.

The 2021 Cranbourne Cup will be run the Saturday following Mackinnon Stakes Day – the fourth and final day of Flemington’s Melbourne Cup Carnival.

But more importantly, the Cranbourne Cup will be run exactly two weeks after Derby Day at Flemington, where three premium-quality 1600-metre races will be run.

The $500,000 Group-3 Carbine Club Stakes for three-year-olds, the $1million Group-1 Empire Rose Stakes for fillies and mares, and the jewel in the crown – the $2million Kennedy Cantala (formerly Emirates Stakes) – will all be decided on Derby Day. This provides the perfect two-week lead in to the biggest and best Cranbourne Cup ever.

Pre noms for the Kennedy Cantala include in-form horses such as Mr Brightside, Superstorm, Chaillot, Elephant, Buffalo River, Cascadian and Tofane.

And some high-class mares have pre- nom for the Empire Rose with Mystic Journey, Colette, Probabeel, Yearning and Elusive Express all genuine contenders who could make their way to Cranbourne for Cup day.

Chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the move of the TAB Cranbourne Cup to a prime Saturday date was an exciting development for the club.

He said it would showcase the Cranbourne racing product nationally, with the meeting – which carries a total prize purse of $1.5million

A crowd of 4,000 people will create a great atmosphere at the TAB Cranbourne Cup on Saturday, 13 November. 198932 - broadcast live and free as part of Channel 7’s Spring Carnival coverage.

“The club is absolutely thrilled to have this opportunity,” Mr Bainbridge said.

“The weather is better at that time of year and racing is at the top of mind.

“This will further entrench Cranbourne as a premier venue for racing in Australia. We are flying our flag to the highest point.”

Attendance will be capped to 4000 people, due to Covid restrictions, but the club is pleased to announce that the vent will be open to members, sponsors, owners and the general public.

The event will be a Covid-Safe event and will be run in accordance with the public Event Framework. All guests who attend the TAB Cranbourne Cup must be double vaccinated against Covid and proof of this will be required on entry.

Mr Bainbridge said it would pay to get in early, because he anticipates the packages will be snapped up quickly.

Racing resilient and ready to rebound after Covid-19

By David Nagel Everyone has been impacted in one way or another by the effects of Covid-19 with the Cranbourne Turf Club (CTC) certainly not immune to the negative consequences that a world-wide pandemic can bring.

No crowds, no atmosphere and no opportunity to entertain the region’s vast lovers of racing have created a sterile environment - far removed from the highly-engaging days of the past.

But CTC CEO Neil Bainbridge feels lucky to be involved in an industry that has continued to forge ahead through some terribly tough times.

“It’s certainly been very difficult for everyone, especially the wider community, and we feel very fortunate at Cranbourne that the racing industry has been able to continue, albeit without crowds,’ Bainbridge said.

“It’s allowed us to continue to offer employment to our staff, and we’re very fortunate to be in a position to do that.

“It’s been tough for the club but we’re very excited about the post-Covid period, we think we’ll have a very big Christmas and January period and we’re very excited about the post-Covid Cranbourne Cup. “Obviously we’re disappointed with no 2W STAR NEWS

Cranbourne Cup Day, 2021, is going to be special for a number of reasons.

Not only will crowds return, but the day will see the richest running of the Cranbourne Cup in history with $500,000 on offer and an overall purse for the program of $1.6million in prizemoney.

Bainbridge said the new Cup date was one the CTC was keen to capitalise on in the future.

“The Sunday cup serves us well for a long period of time, but we couldn’t have chosen a better date, immediately after the famous Flemington carnival, we couldn’t have picked a better date to be honest,” he said.

“You don’t get any iron-clad guarantees in this industry, but it’s our intention that we build this date into something special for Cranbourne and the community.

“A lot of people love going to the races, they love the spring carnival and it’s the crowds and the people that creates the atmosphere and the excitement.

“There have been some sterile type race meetings in recent times, and we can’t wait to welcome crowds back to the track.”

Getting bigger and better

By David Nagel The largest training complex in Australia has had a stunning facelift as the Cranbourne Turf Club (CTC) prepares to welcome some of Victoria’s best trainers to its magnificent equine facility.

CTC CEO Neil Bainbridge said the club was fully prepared for a high-quality influx of trainers, who have had to relocate after the pending closure of the training centre at Caulfield.

“The club is very excited by the addition of leading Victorian trainers moving from Caulfield to Cranbourne, which will see horse numbers increase by approximately 200,” Bainbridge said.

“The Ciaron Maher-Dave Eustace stable is relocating to Cranbourne, Mick Price, Clinton McDonald, Grahame Begg, John Moloney and Lloyd Kennewell so it’s a pretty big deal for the club.

“To support the move we’ve put in a new grass track, new polytrack, a new second hospital that will open soon, so there’s been significant development and investment to make sure our existing and new trainers have the very best facilities at their disposal.

“This will add to what is already the largest training facility in Australia, a phenomenal complex that is not only great for the horse

Bainbridge said the move from Caulfield had thrown up some challenging scenarios for trainers, who were fully invested in their move to the Cranbourne track.

“For those stables, when Caulfield an-

nounced its closure, it was a significant change and we’re excited they chose Cranbourne out of all the training centres in Victoria that they could go to,” Bainbridge said.

“A number of those trainers have already bought property out this way and have relocated in readiness. They’re just waiting to get through the spring carnival before they set up

at Cranbourne in mid-November.”

Bainbridge was confident that the addition of trainers would have a positive impact on racing within the region.

“It will be great for our local racing, with these trainers becoming local and embracing and supporting our local racing programs and events,” he said.

“Pakenham, Mornington and tracks in Gippsland will also benefit from having these quality trainers on their doorstep.

“It’s terrific, we’ve seen residential and business growth in the South East, and racing has grown as well. We want to see both Cranbourne and Pakenham prosper as training facilities as it adds great strength to the region due to their close proximity.”

The development of the CTC Training Centre has been a long time in the making, with the CEO proud of what has been delivered.

“We developed the masterplan for the Cranbourne Training Centre probably six years ago and it’s great to see that plan come to fruition,” Bainbridge said.

“The support, not only of Racing Victoria, but also the State government, that allocated a large amount of funding to accommodate the redevelopment and relocation of the Caulfield trainers, has been fantastic.”

Locals trainers dare to dream of winning their home cup

By David Nagel The thrill of winning your ‘home’ cup is something that every horse trainer would love to experience - but it’s been 10 long years since a horse prepared at Cranbourne was first past the post in the big race.

Cranbourne trainers had a stranglehold on their home cup from 2009 to 2011, with Robbie Laing kick-starting a stellar run for the locals when Sermon gave his rivals a galloping lesson in the cup of 2009.

Sermon began his career in Sydney in 2006 under the care of Bob Thomsen and ran third in a Group-3 Gloaming Stakes – Gai Waterhouse’s star mare Tuesday Joy ran second – before transferring the yard of Lee Freedman.

He arrived at the Laing stable in early 2008 and won his first start for the stable at Echuca.

He then won the Pakenham Cup in March 2009 before winning the Cranbourne Cup on October 11 that year. He crushed his rivals by four lengths, with Stormhill running second and The Sportsman back in third.

“He was originally a Derby contender in Sydney, but dropped off the pace and I acquired him at a time when I was looking for a replacement for jumper Mazzacano, but he’s now won the Pakenham and Cranbourne Cups and a race at Caulfield,” Laing said after the race.

“Winning your home cup is a huge thrill.”

Popular-local Mick Kent then dominated the Cranbourne Cup of 2010, breaking his long-hoodoo in the race by producing the quinella with Starmon and My Bentley.

Starmon was originally trained in New Zealand before flying across the ditch and taking up residence with Kent in November 2009.

He had 13 starts for Kent, for two wins, with his Cranbourne Cup success giving the local trainer a huge thrill.

Starmon, ridden by Glen Boss, won by a head from My Bentley who had Craig Newitt in the saddle.

Kent, who publicly thanked Boss for ‘a perfect ride’, said he had a feeling his charges would be thereabouts at the finish.

“It’s probably the first year I thought I had a chance of winning it, so it’s a great thrill,” he said.

“I identified those two horses for the race a while ago, but of course everything has to go well … and it all went well.

“Knowing her style of racing, she wasn’t gunna be far away and she’s got a good turn of foot.”

Jockey Mark Pegus and Cranbourne trainer Robbie Laing enjoy the dominant 2009 win of Sermon. bourne Racecourse was almost lifted off by cheering locals when the Ken Keys trained Boom ‘N ‘Zoom scored an emotional victory in the biggest race on the local calendar.

The Cranbourne trainer was mobbed by excited owners and well-wishers as Newitt returned the six-year-old gelding to scale after careering away to win by nearly three lengths.

Keys had experienced the joy of a hometown cup victory once before, in 2006 he trained Blue Collar Jack to success, but it didn’t stop his top lip quivering as he tried to contain his emotions.

“Pretty excited…pretty excited, he just had to get off the fence but once he did everything just panned out nicely,” he said, as the hugs, kisses and tears continued in the background.

“For a few months now this has been the plan, we set the horse specifically for this race; he’s been working well so we expected a big run.

“Right now, it’s just pure relief; I probably won’t start to appreciate this until tomorrow.”

Keys mapped out an unconventional plan for the son of Dash for Cash to have him cherry ripe for the big day.

“He races his best when he’s fresh; I have to get him fit by training, not by running him in lead-up races, he just wouldn’t respond,” Keys said.

“I put the blinkers on him recently and that seemed to freshen him up even more;

you’ve always got to try new things.

“Training has changed these days, you really have to understand your horse and there’s no set rule to how you prepare them for the longer trips.”

“It looks like the Bendigo Cup might be his next start, it’s a big race…but we won’t be around locals there will we.”

Will a local trainer take out the first standalone Cranbourne Cup in 2021 – and break a 10-year drought – we’ll just have to wait and see!

Works a waste Baxter-Tooradin Road continues to draw ire from locals who are furious at its condition despite an upgrade earlier this year.

Potholes have reappeared on the road’s surface and drivers have complained on Facebook that road safety barriers installed along parts of the road are difficult to see, especially at night.

Other drivers have complained about poor visibility at the intersection of Baxter-Tooradin Road and Warneet Road.

The level of the road has also been criti-

cised, with drivers noting the road has varying surface heights and floods during heavy rains.

Hastings MP Neale Burgess said he echoed the sentiment of locals.

“The upgrades to the road do not seem to be good value for money and the road still feels very unsafe,” he said.

“The widenings in small sections do not feel sufficient and the safety barriers feeling intrusively close to the driver as you travel down the road.”

But the Department of Transport has confirmed it will be conducting further mainte-

nance work between Western Port Highway, Pearcedale and the South Gippsland Highway, Devon Meadows to improve the surface.

A spokesperson for the Department said the road was regularly inspected “to identify any potential hazards to road users and carry out appropriate maintenance”.

Asphalt repairs are set to begin in November and, weather permitting, will be completed by the end of the year.

These repairs will be along the entire length of the road, including the recently-upgraded section.

While the flexible safety barriers – which

were installed on the left side of the road and the centre median – already have reflectors, extra reflectors were added after the major upgrade to the centre median posts to make them more visible at night and in the fog.

And drivers hoping for a fix to the BaxterTooradin Road and Warneet Road intersection are likely to be disappointed, with the Department only considering additional or improved lighting on arterial roads when a section or intersection has 30 per cent or more crashes during the night compared to during the day.

Pop in for quick jab

By Danielle Kutchel Community leaders are urging people to get vaccinated as more jab pop-ups open in the City of Casey.

Speaking at a pop-up hub at Casey Fields on Saturday 16 October, Meha Sivarasa and Andrew Gai urged members of their communities to speak to healthcare professionals about getting vaccinated, to allay any fears they may have.

“I want to say a very big thankyou to those who get vaccinated,” Ms Sivarasa, who is from the Sri Lankan Tamil community, said.

“I humbly request all to get the right information from the right source and do the right thing - that is, by getting vaccinated.”

Andrew Gai, a South Sudanese community leader, also thanked those who have done their part so far and said it wasn’t too late for others to get their vaccination.

“If you haven’t done your vaccination yet, please have a chat with your local GP or pharmacist or any of the nurses and get vaccinated,” he said.

“This is the only way out of this.”

The City of Casey will host more vaccination pop-ups in coming weeks as authorities seek to stamp out the outbreak and increase the vaccination rate.

A pop-up clinic will open at Bunjil Place on Thursday 21 October and run until Sunday 7 November, seven days a week, from 9am5pm.

Both Pfizer and Moderna will be offered for first and second doses.

Hampton Park Secondary College, on Fordholm Road in Hampton Park, will also offer Pfizer and Moderna on Saturday 23 October from 10am-6pm and Sunday 24 October from 9am-5pm.

Cranbourne West Secondary College at 80 Strathlea Drive, Cranbourne West will host a pop-up on Saturday 23 October from 10am-6.30pm and Sunday 24 October, 10am5.30pm, with Pfizer and Moderna on offer.

For all three clinics, residents can walk in or book online via the coronavirus website, or by phone on 1800 675 398.

The City of Casey now has more than 2200 active cases of coronavirus and continues to worry health authorities.

The south east region, including Casey and the City of Greater Dandenong, recorded 575 new cases on Wednesday 20 October.

Of those, 180 were recorded in Casey.

Victoria recorded 1841 new cases of Covid on Wednesday.

Postcode-level data reveals that postcode 3978 – covering Clyde and Clyde North – has one of the highest rates of active cases per 100,000 population in the metropolitan region, with 2160 cases per 100,000 people.

There are currently 230 active cases in the postcode, which also covers Cardinia.

It comes as Casey Hospital begins setting up tents outside its emergency department.

Monash Health has been contacted for comment to confirm the purpose of the tents.

By Danielle Kutchel At around 35 centimetres long, Harpa Cargill’s hair is an impressive sight.

But the long locks are for more than just looks; Harpa is getting ready to undergo the chop to raise money for cancer treatment.

The 12-year-old Cranbourne resident, who is school captain at Pearcedale Primary School, started growing his hair two years ago after hearing of a family friend who had been diagnosed with cancer.

He wanted to donate his hair to be made into a wig for someone who has lost theirs due to the disease, and has been raising funds over the past two years to donate to the National Breast Cancer Foundation to help find a cure.

So far he has raised almost $3000 for the cause – more than he had expected what with

Covid impacting his original in-person fundraising plans.

As an added incentive, anyone who donates more than $50 to his fundraiser will go in the draw to be the one to shave half of Harpa’s head when he gets the clippers out in December.

Harpa said his twin sister has already “dibsed” shaving the other half.

Several of his friends have also saved up their pocket money and donated $50 to try and be the one to get the coveted shaving role.

Life with long hair has taken some getting used to; Harpa said he ties it back in a bun when he goes to school, and often wakes up with knots.

The worst part, he said, is “being called a girl all the time”.

One of the best things though is that his

hair has grown faster than his sister’s and is now longer than hers.

It’s also allowed for some creative thinking when it comes to fundraising.

On his Facebook and Instagram page, Harpa has been posting different videos and pictures of his hair dressed up in kooky creations – from a coiffed bird’s nest complete with eggs, to a Medusa style with snakes, a fruit basket and even a drinks tower.

He hopes his enthusiasm will inspire others to donate to help reduce cancer.

“Every cent helps,” he said.

Victorians are reminded to apply for permits for fires they would like to burn.

Reminder on fire permits Victoria’s fire services are reminding Victorians to apply for a permit if they need to use open fire this fire season.

Over the coming days and weeks, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) will declare the commencement of the Fire Danger Period for regional and outer Melbourne municipalities across Victoria.

Each area of Victoria enters the Fire Danger Period at different times, based on local conditions and the risk of grass and bushfires. During this period the use of fire is restricted in the community.

However, if you need to use open fire for work, to undertake burn-offs or for other essential activities during this time, you can apply for a permit online.

In some circumstances, permits can also be issued for Total Fire Ban days.

Fire Rescue Commissioner Ken Block said the permit system played a crucial role in helping fire and rescue authorities manage fire risk across the state.

“I strongly encourage anyone who uses open fire for work or other activities to apply for a fire permit this fire season,” Commissioner Block said.

“Your permit will outline methods for undertaking your planned activity safely, and will enable fire authorities to communicate with you on high-risk days, or if conditions change.”

CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan said the multiagency online system created an integrated approach with Victoria’s fire and rescue services, local governments and municipal fire prevention officers.

“The Fire Permits Victoria website was established in 2020 and has proved to be a useful and easy-to-use resource, allowing people to seamlessly apply for a permit in a matter of minutes,” CO Heffernan said.

“Having a fire permit will not only allow you to carry out your essential activities throughout the fire season, but will ensure you are provided with timely safety directives and advice.”

Forest Fire Management Victoria Chief Fire Officer Chris Hardman said the system allowed permit holders to notify agencies when approved permits would be used, including for planned burns.

“This frees up the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority to focus on their core work of call-taking and means our firefighters will not be dispatched unnecessarily,” he said.

“The permit system provides agencies with vital information to manage fire risk in an efficient and effective way.”

Clyde to become greener Stockland Evergreen, Stockland’s newest masterplanned community in Melbourne’s southeast suburb of Clyde, is set to become the largest residential project in Australia to use the environmentally-friendly road surfacing material, Reconophalt, using more than 19,000 tonnes.

Downer’s Reconophalt is a type of asphalt that does not cause any harm to the environment or exude harmful fumes when compared to standard asphalt, and is similar in look, feel and durability. The material contains high levels of recycled content derived from waste streams, such as soft plastics, toner, glass and reclaimed road that would otherwise be sent to landfill or stockpiled.

The entire project will see 16.9 million plastic bags, 493,000 printer cartridges, 7600 tonnes of recycled asphalt and 2380 glass bottles diverted from landfill – saving the equivalent of 218 tonnes of carbon dioxide and removing 90 cars off the road for one year.

Stockland’s use of Reconophalt at Evergreen follows its adoption at stages of Stockland Minta in Berwick and Stockland Katalia in Donnybrook, and builds on Stockland’s commitment to achieve Net Zero Carbon emissions by 2028.

The Evergreen Reconophalt project is a collaboration between Stockland, City of Casey, Downer Group and Winslow Constructors Australia.

“Drainage reserves throughout the community will be used to store and reuse drain water.

As Victoria prepares to reopen, the State Government has unveiled support to help businesses operate outside.

The $54.5 million Outdoor Economy Package will help support the costs for thousands of businesses of setting up for street trading, and back councils to provide the necessary infrastructure and support.

A $14.5 million CovidSafe Outdoor Activation Voucher Program will provide more than 7000 Victorian businesses, community organisations, not-for-profits and trader associations with $2000 grants when they spend at least that amount to support initiatives such as outdoor hospitality and entertainment.

The vouchers will be valid for expenses including purchasing and hiring marquees, screens and umbrellas, obtaining insurance and promoting outdoor operations. Some 20 per cent of the vouchers will be allocated in regional Victoria.

Hairdressers, beauty services, retail shops, dance studios and gyms will also be eligible to apply for vouchers, meaning they can join restaurants, cafes and bars in harnessing the opportunities of kerbside trading. The Voucher Program will open soon and will be delivered by Business Victoria in partnership with Service Victoria.

A new $40 million CovidSafe Outdoor Activation Fund will help councils transform more outdoor areas so Victorians can enjoy local attractions safely as we reach the key 70 per cent double vaccination threshold, then 80 per cent, with restrictions lifting significantly at those marks.

The Fund will allocate $20.5 million so councils can provide immediate assistance to businesses to operate outdoors, through physical improvements such as new street furniture, landscaping, marquees, planter boxes and public art, as well as entertainment to bring our outdoor precincts to life.

Funding will be allocated based on the level of business activity, with metropolitan councils to receive between $300,000 and $800,000, regional councils $300,000–$500,000 and rural councils $100,000–$250,000.

Councils will be encouraged to use part of their allocation to waive permit fees and related charges, and will be required to agree not to create or impose any new or net additional fees or charges to businesses to use new or upgraded outdoor spaces.

Councils will also receive a share of $19.5 million to establish semi-permanent and permanent outdoor precincts.

The new packages are set to build upon a similar set of supports provided in 2020, which helped create parklets and pop-up bars across municipalities.

Dip in puppy training raises welfare concerns Victorians are choosing to delay puppy training or worse still avoiding puppy training classes as the virtual world starts to take a toll on dog owners.

Puppy training classes at The Lost Dogs’ Home (which are currently online) have fallen by a massive 80 per cent as Victorians choose to wait for the return of face-to-face classes.

The trend is particularly worrying as the rate of adoptions in pandemic times have surged.

“What this means is that there are potentially hundreds if not thousands of young or juvenile animals in our community missing out on important socialisation,’’ said the Home’s behaviour trainer Seren Robinson.

“We were running at least five classes simultaneously before lockdown and now that has almost completely dropped off.”

She said a similar drop was seen last year with many dogs missing out on appropriate training and socialisation in the critical period before 16 weeks of age.

“A lot of people are under the impression that there is no value to training unless it’s in person which really isn’t true,” Ms Robinson said.

“A huge part of the training process is a discussion of the dog’s behavioural history and setting up owners with the tools to continue their management and training at home.”

“There are also unique benefits to training online as your dog is likely to be far more comfortable and less distracted in their familiar home environment.”

Mr Weimar said the contact tracing approach was being “refined”.

“Particularly now that we’re in lockdown, most of the exposure sites are really places that are under control,” he said, adding that places where the Department was confident of contacting all attendees were not published.

“People shouldn’t expect to see every time there’s a positive case…hundreds of exposure sites.”

“When we’re putting sites up, we want to make sure we’ve got the details right.”

“Exposure sites can only be identified once we’ve found a positive case and done the contact tracing with them, and they’ve identified what their movements have been,” he explained.”

“There’s a fair bit of work. It’s not unusual to see an exposure site being listed where it relates to activity from four or five days ago, given someone has had to get tested and share that information.”

A new vaccination pop-up has launched in Casey as officials race to get ahead of rising cases in the municipality.

A vaccination centre has been set up this weekend at Casey Fields to help boost Casey’s vaccination rates.

The site opened on Friday 15 October and will run until Sunday 17 October.

It comes as Victoria dipped back below the 2000 mark, recording 1993 cases on Saturday 16 October.

Seven Victorians died due to Covid in the past 24 hours, including a woman in her 60s from Casey.

Victoria’s Covid Commander Jeroen Weimar visited the Casey Fields vaccination centre on Saturday 16 October and told media the state was making good progress on its vaccination program.

He was joined by Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards, Bass MP Jordan Crugnale and community leaders Andrew Gai and Meha Sivarasa.

Over five million Victorians have now received their first dose of a vaccine, he said.

As of Monday 11 October, 54.2 per cent of Casey residents aged over 15 had had both doses of the vaccine.

This was behind the state vaccination rate, which was 60.4 per cent on the same day.

Mr Weimar said Casey’s lagging vaccination rate and surge in cases were a concern.

Casey now has 1863 active cases of the virus, after recording another 191 in the past 24 hours.

Mr Weimar said there had been “significant growth” in cases across Hampton Park, Cranbourne North, Clyde and Narre Warren, as well as Dandenong, Keysborough, Noble Park, Frankston and Cardinia, with household-tohousehold contact driving transmission.

He urged those who were not yet vaccinated to “please get that done”.

“Here in the south east, the second dose vaccination rate is rising steeply; we’re focusing on the remaining parts of the community where more work needs to be done,” he said.

He said health authorities were targeting 11 postcodes across the south east where the first dose rate is still below 80 per cent, with more pop-up vaccination sites planned.

Asked whether Casey had been left behind by health authorities as they focused on outbreaks in the northern and western suburbs, Mr Weimar said that was not the case and said Greater Dandenong and Casey had been identified for many weeks as areas of concern, with boosts to the vaccination rollouts there.

He said locals could expect to see a continued surge in additional vaccination resources and teams to support those in the lower-vaccinated postcodes to “get the job done”.

With the prospect of eased restrictions on the very near horizon, Mr Weimar urged residents to “hold on a bit longer” while vaccination rates increase.

Kids heading back to Casey Cardinia Libraries are in for a treat, with thousands of new Lego pieces on their way!

Casey Cardinia Libraries’ Lego fundraiser, which ran from June to September of this year, has raised $7526 – and staff have already started buying stacks of Lego, ready for when kids can be welcomed back for the library for children’s activities and the ever-popular Lego club.

Lego Club has continued via Zoom for kids at home during lockdown, with the library delivering small kits to children who don’t have their own to build.

Friend and colleague remembered with a treat

By Danielle Kutchel Staff at River Gum Primary School in Hampton Park have honoured the life of a long-serving staff member with a moving Biggest Morning Tea. The staff member passed away from ovarian cancer in early 2021, devastating the school community.

Colleagues were moved to do something meaningful in her memory, and decided to

hold a Biggest Morning Tea to raise money to fight cancer.

Around 70 staff came together earlier this year in a bittersweet event to acknowledge their friend.

There was plenty of delicious food and a photo of the lady front and centre, to remind everyone of why they were there.

The staff raised $500, which was donated to the Cancer Council in their colleague’s name.

Casey Council has agreed to provide further support for businesses impacted by the pandemic.

Casey keeps support up

By Danielle Kutchel The City of Casey’s chair of administrators has made an impassioned plea for residents to speak to healthcare professionals about getting vaccinated, as the municipality continues to record a surge in Covid-19 cases.

Speaking at the council meeting on Tuesday 19 October, Noelene Duff said the majority of the more than 2000 active cases in Casey were not vaccinated and were under the age of 40.

Ms Duff said that with the support of Monash Health and other health services, the municipality’s vaccination rate had risen above the state average with almost 93 per cent single-dosed and almost 64 per cent double-dosed.

She said an increase in vaccinations for those between the ages of 16 and 39 would help slow case growth.

She encouraged people within this age group to discuss their vaccination with health practitioners.

“I cannot emphasise and encourage people strongly enough to take responsibility for their health during this period of time and get vaccinated.

“That is the way out of this pandemic,” Ms Duff said.

Her plea came ahead of a discussion about further council support for Casey’s registered health and food businesses.

Administrator Cameron Boardman supported her comments and noted the wider impact of Covid on mental health and businesses.

“Whilst we finished 20202 with a degree of optimism, 2021 has arguably been more severe,” Mr Boardman said in moving a motion to apply a discount of three months pro-rata of a business’ registration renewal for those that have been unable to trade at all during lockdown restrictions.

Businesses including beauty therapists, bed and breakfasts, motels, hairdressers, before and after school care and sporting clubs were invited to apply for a refund on their 2020 registration fees, with the amount refunded based on the length of time that the business was closed.

The council received 224 requests, of which 220 were deemed eligible, Mr Boardman said, with a total of $46,201 refunded.

In 2021, council officers recommended discounting renewal by the equivalent of 3-month pro-rata amount to businesses that have been unable to trade during lockdown.

The officer’s report noted that this would reduce administration costs associated with applying the measure, and would also allow some control over the amount of the discount.

The report estimates that 889 businesses would be eligible, with a total of $86,019.65 in discounts.

Mr Boardman welcomed the State Government’s announcement over the weekend of a new package to support businesses to move to an outdoor trading model.

He said the City of Casey would receive more than $500,000 in funding for trading and to establish semi-permanent and permanent outdoor precincts to support its local businesses.

“A number of businesses in our municipality have suffered extraordinary challenges and consequences over the last 20 or so months,” he said.

“The little bits we do through our freezing of rates … to a refund on business registrations and utilising the funding we’ve got from the State Government to provide better amenities, hopefully go some part to easing some of that pain,” he said.

Administrator Miguel Belmar said that the motion was a “small but nonetheless important recognition of what Council can do, and is only one part of the work Council has been doing to support businesses in the Casey community.”

The motion was carried.

Since my father was in the military, I have learnt to be disciplined and make a daily plan.

When I wake up in the morning, the first step is always making my bed. I can not fulfill anything if I leave it missy. I strongly believe, if we want to feel satisfied at the end of the day, we have to make a daily schedule.

What is your favourite cuisine?

I am a food lover, I love all sorts of cuisine around the globe. I mostly prefer seafood.

What has been your most memorable moment?

When I was named ‘Casey Citizen of the Year’ in 2020. I have been selected among so many amazing individuals. When the MC at the Australian Day celebration was announcing the nominees, I wouldn’t have thought that among all those amazing personalities I would be the one. I received hundreds of messages from family and friends.

Who is your biggest inspiration?

My mother has always been my biggest inspiration. She dedicated all her life to serve the community back in Afghanistan, promote gender equality, provided educational opportunities for women and above all she has been a father and a mother for her children. My dedication and commitment in the community is inspired by her.

If you had to compete on MasterChef, what dish would you cook?

I am not very good at cooking but I would try Afghan Kebab.

If you were Prime Minister for a day, what would be the first thing you would do?

By Mitchell Clarke Almost one year since alleged corruption was exposed within the City of Casey, a former councillor is still fighting to clear his name.

Former Springfield Ward councillor Rex Flannery, who resigned as deputy mayor just days before the State Government sensationally sacked the entire council in February 2020, says the events of the past 12 months are still “eating” him up.

He has now officially requested that his name is removed from both a councillor honour board in the customer service centre and a wall plaque in Bunjil Place.

“I have never had any involvement into this alleged corruption scandal and therefore I do not wish to have my name associated with past or former councillors who may have brought our City of Casey into disrepute,” he told Star News.

“People look at your name and they see that you’re from Casey Council and immediately they put you in that same mould, which couldn’t be further than the truth.

“It’s just horrible to have been a councillor in that term. It gives you a sickening feeling in your gut and now I have to live with that.“ Mr Flannery argues his name should never have been placed on the plaque celebrating the $126 million Bunjil development because at the time he didn’t support the project.

“I guess I’ve eaten a little bit of humble pie with Bunjil Place. I’ve been able to see the value that place brings to the community but at the time I was against the development and I wasn’t once consulted (about having my name included),” he said.

He also claims former ex-ward partner, Sam Aziz, stated to him that he “wished he never had my name added to the plaque”.

“That was the only time I agreed with him,” Mr Flannery said.

While Mr Flannery hasn’t accused any former councillor of committing wrongdoing, he said anyone found guilty from the IBAC hearing should immediately have their honours stripped.

Since his resignation, Mr Flannery has been working in an operating theatre at a local hospital. He said he has every intention to run for council again in 2024.

By the time you read this Victoria will hopefully be 70 per cent fully vaccinated and seeing some relaxation of current restrictions.

If history is anything to go by these are unlikely to be significant until we reach 80 per cent by when we should all be able to start to enjoy some of the ‘privileges’ that NSW is starting to experience.

But what will the business landscape look like then?

For sure, the new ‘Covid normal’ won’t look like things did prior to the pandemic, so what can we expect?

Here are a few thoughts: First off, the biggest change is likely to affect working conditions for just about everyone. It is now clear that working from home is not just a viable proposition, it is now an established way of working for many companies since it can actually improve productivity, enable a better work/life balance (less time wasted in travel time to/from business premises), reduce the need for larger business offices and save on fuel costs not to mention reducing the impact on the environment.

Don’t get me wrong, there is still a very present need for us to conduct business faceto-face, especially for all those important and sensitive discussions (and who isn’t looking forward to meeting back up with colleagues and business partners) but overall I am quite sure that working from home will be far more widespread than it ever was prior to the pandemic.

This implies the need to maintain the ability for staff to work remotely in terms of communications and IT infrastructure and also to be mindful of their health and safety in the home work environment. It also implies that there is likely to be a surplus of offices available in the city and elsewhere so the price (and hence rents) for these is likely to fall.

Some industries such as travel, hospitality and retail will take many months, possibly years to recover. Not only because of the financial hardship they have suffered trying to keep their businesses running with little or no income over the past 18 months but also because many employees have now left these sectors to pursue new professional avenues and are unlikely to return.

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH This means that as these sectors open back up, there will be a scarcity of qualified staff and far more vacancies than there are staff to fill them. The temptation for business leaders then is to hire to simply fill the vacancies but whilst there is no doubt that businesses will need to move fast to secure good staff, I would caution against just putting ‘bums on seats’ ASAP. Getting the right staff on board is still the most important decision a business can make in my personal view so ensuring that people who share your values and can treat your customers as you would want them treated should still remain the highest priority even if it means having to interview more prospective candidates before you make your selection.

Although a number of businesses have suffered or worse had to close up, some businesses have been able to continue pretty much as normal (especially if they have been classified as an ‘essential service’) and some have done very well with many benefitting from the Federal Government’s JobKeeper program. There is no reason why these businesses should not continue to prosper.

In addition, lockdowns have meant that people have not been able to go out and spend very much so those that have been able to continue to earn have likely seen their savings grow.

This implies that a slow and steady growth trajectory out of lockdown would be a more sensible way to go with money being channelled into sensible investments and carefully managed to allow for those rainy days which will invariably come.

We have all learnt a lot about ourselves and our businesses during this pandemic but out of adversity comes opportunity so let’s make the most of this knowledge.

Casey goes for equality

A legend in timber From a lineage of sports champions, Jeff Harvey has scored an incredible 60 years with Hallam timber company Bowen & Pomeroy.

Mr Harvey – or ‘Harvs’ – is admired as a “champion of timber” at Bowens and throughout the timber industry.

He was said to have done “nearly every job we had on offer”, who “touched thousands of lives” and was loved by colleagues young and old.

A colleagues said Mr Harvey was known as “honest, hard-working and loyal” to the company, colleagues and customers.

“He forever represented the company and himself with the highest level of integrity and garnered respect from all.”

The Harvey name is well known in cricket circles. Mr Harvey’s uncle Neil played 79 tests for Australia – part of six brothers who played for Fitzroy-Doncaster.

Mr Harvey himself was an accomplished

batsman and captain. He still continues as chairman of selectors at Fitzroy-Doncaster, a club he’s been part of for 60 years as well.

The workplace has been well and truly central to his life and part of his family.

It was where Mr Harvey first met his wife Marilyn, who was personal assistant to manager Jack Dowling.

And his three sons Robert, Anthony and Steven have also worked at Bowen & Pomeroy.

Eldest son Steven celebrated 33 years with the company this year.

Robert worked there part-time before kicking on as a champion AFL player and dual Brownlow medalist at St Kilda.

Anthony was also part of the business before forging a successful career in Adelaide.

Their father has been offered a job at Bowens for as long as he wished.

But he has shown no inclination to take it easy.

Monster display as Halloween approaches

The City of Casey has launched its first Digital Equity Framework to improve digital equity and empowerment in the municipality.

Digital equity refers to ensuring everyone has fair access to the internet and other digital technology, while digital empowerment refers to having the access and ability to use the internet, smart devices and other technology, so everyone can thrive in the digital age.

The Framework is a priority driven by both the acceleration of people’s use and dependence on digital technologies since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, coupled with the Outer South East region (of which Casey is part) having the lowest rates of digital inclusion across Greater Melbourne according to the Australian Digital Inclusion Index 2020.

Developed in consultation with Casey residents, businesses and community groups in June this year, the framework sets out guidelines and activities to deliver digital resources and infrastructure to improve online access, confidence and literacy across Casey.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff said that all community members deserve fair access to digital resources and the associated benefits, which in turn builds digital empowerment and digital democracy.

“Council is committed to building digital equity in Casey through ensuring community members have access to digital tools, skills and the confidence needed for full and ongoing participation in our increasingly online society, democracy, and economy,“ said Ms Duff.

“Given the importance of digital channels in our lives, we hope Casey’s Digital Equity Framework will inspire other councils and government bodies to adopt a similar framework to increase the access, affordability and digital abilities for communities around Australia.”

As part of the Digital Equity Framework, initial activities include: Increasing internet access: identifying key locations to install free public wi-fi stations in Doveton to improve internet access in the area.

Map free wi-fi points: creating an online map for community service organisations, schools and the general community to use to support people to find free public wi-fi across the city.

Building digital skills: implementing a digital activation program to overcome the vulnerable population’s social isolation and digital exclusion exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Digital Equity Framework is also a priority initiative of the Smart Casey Launchpad – a strategic approach to smart city action developed in consultation with the community in 2020.

The launchpad guides how Casey Council and the community can harness data, technology and innovation to build a connected, sustainable, inclusive and innovative community.

The Digital Equity Framework supports the launchpad’s focus area of Connecting Communities, which aims to ‘build digital connectivity to increase digital inclusion, participation in Council decision-making and community building.’

Throughout the development of the framework, a digital empowerment insights paper was developed to promote further conversations about how to embed actions and principles that enable communities to be empowered in the digital age.

In the coming months, the council will launch a Digital Equity Lab to test and pilot innovative ideas to increase digital access, affordability and abilities in the Casey community.

Stamps poll rort alleged

By Cam Lucadou-Wells More than $10,000 of stamps were allegedly misappropriated from South East Metropolitan MP Adem Somyurek’s electorate office to help another MP’s re-election, an IBAC inquiry heard on 13 October.

Adam Sullivan, a former electorate officer for Mr Somyurek, said a Labor staff member suggested in early 2018 to start buying stamps to “re-route” to Mordiallac MP Tim Richardson’s election campaign.

Mr Sullivan said he was advised by staffer Nick McLennan to incrementally buy between 1000 and 2000 stamps a fortnight to avoid scrutiny from the Department of Parliamentary Services.

“I think at the end of that process personally myself I would have purchased around $11,000 to $14,000 worth of $1 stamps,” Mr Sullivan said.

“I imagine a fair number of them were then rerouted to political purposes for the re-election of Tim Richardson in Mordialloc in 2018.”

Mr Sullivan said he was told by Mr McLennan that Mr Somyurek had given “tacit approval”.

“It didn’t seem like something that would be out of the ordinary to occur in Mr Somyurek’s office.

“It didn’t seem like it was the sort of thing that would be frowned upon or would be otherwise not permitted by the member.”

The electorate office funds used to buy the stamps were supposed to be “strictly apolitical” and used for purposes like “constituent outreach”, Mr Sullivan said.

They were not to be used for “partisan purposes”.

He said 100 per cent of his role at Mr Richardson’s office was focused on legitimate “constituent work”.

Such as liaising with community groups, drafting letters of support and walk-ins.

However at Mr Somyurek’s “dysfunctional” electorate office, there was “very little to do”.

There was “negligible foot traffic”.

Later that day, Mr Richardson issued a statement denying that he breached his electorate

office communications budget requirements.

He also denied being part of branch stacking or paying for memberships after being named as part of an informal ALP factional group South East Alliance. Mr Byrne told the inquiry on 11 October that he and state MPs Luke Donnellan and Mr Somyurek formed the alliance, with Mr Richardson latterly joining.

At the inquiry, Mr Byrne said he, Mr Donnellan and Mr Somyurek paid about $2000 each for other people’s memberships as part of a branch-stacking enterprise.

He said he was “not exactly sure” if Mr Rich-

In a statement, Mr Richardson said: “I have not been involved in branch stacking nor have I paid for any memberships.

“I have always complied with the requirements of my electorate office communications budget.

“My focus has always been working as hard as I can for the wonderful Mordialloc constituents, which I have the privilege and honour to represent each and every day.

“I will not be making any further comment on active inquiries.”

Somyurek office ‘shambolic’, former staffer tells IBAC

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A former staffer for State MP Adem Somyurek has described the electorate office in Dandenong as “shambolic” and “dysfunctional”.

Mr Somyurek’s father was paid to clean the MP’s electorate office in Dandenong, the staffer Adam Sullivan told an IBAC Operation Watts hearing on 13 October.

But he only saw the father there on “one or two occasions” – and that was primarily to ask where his pay was.

The “decrepit, rundown” office “complete with cobwebs” didn’t appear to be regularly cleaned, Mr Sullivan said.

The bin liners and “once-over” of the toilet and bathroom sink occurred about once a week.

Mr Sullivan said he took it on himself to clean up the office, such as tidy up stacks of boxes of papers in one of the chambers and to use the broken vacuum cleaner.

His role was to “literally” and “figuratively” clean up the office.

“It was somewhat shambolic when I first entered it.”

When Mr Somyurek offered him the job in August 2017, Mr Sullivan said he was hesitant to transfer from Holt federal MP and factional ally Anthony Byrne’s office.

“By that point Mr Somyurek had some bad press in 2015. He had something of a coloured reputation even amongst our own circle there in the South East in Mr Byrne’s office.

“It was generally well known… that Mr Somyurek’s electorate office was dysfunctional.

“I had a feeling of being set up to fail, that it was a lost cause. Frankly I don’t think Mr Somyurek desired to have his electorate office to be functional.”

He said he feared his political ambitions would be thwarted if he declined the offer from the “titular head” of the Moderate Labor faction.

Mr Sullivan said in his nine months’ fulltime tenure, he only saw Mr Somyurek at his electorate office once. At the time, Mr Somyurek was a back-bencher.

“Outside of business hours, I think he might have dropped in.”

Former electorate officer Adam Sullivan told of devoting his work time to MP Adem Somyurek’s bid for the ALP National Executive.

In a “functional” electorate office, an MP would regularly attend to oversee things, checking on staff. There would normally be an office manager. It would normally be a “hive of activity”.

But for Mr Somyurek’s several employed electorate officers, there was little constituent work to do.

It was “entirely possible” that they were doing party factional work, though Mr Sullivan couldn’t think of specific examples.

“There was negligible foot traffic in Mr Somyurek’s case.

“There was very little to occupy oneself with in that environment.

“I know in my case I just busied myself with trying to tidy up the office.”

Former Greater Dandenong mayor Pinar Yesil was employed five-days-a-week casually in early 2018. But Mr Sulllivan saw her for “maybe about an hour or two here and there” several days a week.

She was doing “nothing that would approach typical electorate office work”.

“She was logged into the computer. As to exactly what she was doing, though, I can’t rightly say.”

In early 2018, Mr Somyurek was seeking election to the ALP’s national executive.

During work time, Mr Sullivan wrote a letter to be sent to members enlisting their support.

But Mr Somyurek didn’t think it was required because his staff would pick up the ballot papers from members and fill them out themselves.

“Ballot harvesting” was time-consuming, and done during office hours, Mr Sullivan said.

It was an all-hands on deck situation involving taxpayer-funded ministerial and electorate staff.

Mr Sullivan said the activities were run through Mr Byrne’s office because of the “dysfunction” at Mr Somyurek’s.

He said he also did factional work during stints at offices of former state Cabinet Minister Marlene Kairouz and Upper House

state MP Tien Kieu.

He’d been directed to work at the offices

by Mr Somyurek, he said.

Upon resigning in January 2020, Mr Sullivan referred to Mr Somyurek as “Mein Fuhrer” in private text messages to friends.

“Mr Somyurek had accumulated quite an amount of power and influence over the party.

“He could be a quite, I suppose, overbearing person at times, a volatile person at times.

“And of course anyone in that situation who has that amount of power tends to become a bit of a megalomaniac.”

Mr Sullivan was disappointed in his own role.

“We chose repeatedly to do the wrong thing again, and again, and again, and again.

“And ultimately the choice was that we put our own interests and our own loyalty to a factional machine and a system of patronage above the interests of the public and, speaking as a former public servant, there can be no greater failure.” cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

See the invisible at gardens The most ambitious and expansive exhibition of contemporary artworks created with augmented reality (AR) technology will premiere simultaneously in 12 gardens around the world, including the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Seeing the Invisible features works by more than a dozen international artists such as Ai Weiwei, Refik Anadol, El Anatsui, Isaac Julien CBE, Mohammed Kazem, Sigalit Landau, Sarah Meyohas, Pamela Rosenkranz, and Timur Si-Qin—including several artists’ first work in AR. Free for visitors to both Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria in Melbourne and Cranbourne, Seeing the Invisible will allow attendees to engage via an app designed for the exhibition that is downloadable to smartphones and tablets.

Developed during the pandemic, Seeing the Invisible was initiated by the Jerusalem Botanical Gardens and Outset Contemporary Art Fund and is co-curated by Hadas Maor and Tal Michael Haring.

Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria was the only organisation in Australia invited to participate.

“Coming out of the pandemic when outdoor experiences and nature have taken on a new meaning and gravity in our lives, this exhibition represents a fresh way for people to engage with art and nature simultaneously,” said Mr Haring.

“The interplay of these augmented reality works in vibrant natural settings breaks down the binary between what is often considered ‘natural’ versus ‘digital’, and in this way provides an exhibition experience that is much more connected to the way we live today.”

“We are thrilled to partner with these prestigious international gardens to offer Melbourne another world-class, outdoor event, set to be an unmissable experience this spring,” said Tim Entwisle, director and chief executive of Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Avoiding injuries With Covid restrictions easing, life is soon to return to a more full and active one. However health professionals are predicting an increase in foot and leg injuries post lockdown.

We asked one of Australia’s leading foot and leg pain experts, Dr. Paul Dowie from Foot and Leg Pain Clinics, to explain.

“Extended periods of decreased physical activity results in reduced strength and capacity to bear load i.e. the weigth your feet and legs bear through activity when carrying your body weight around. When we suddenly return to our normal lives it may cause considerable stress to muscles, joints and tissues leading to a range of overuse syndromes and injuries,” says Dr Dowie.

“Whilst we can assist most foot and leg injuries relatively easily with appropriate treatment, prevention is better than cure,” he says.

Dr. Dowie suggests: Taking things slowly and gradually increasing activity. Start with walking around the block or other outdoor activities such as cycling and swimming which comply with lockdown regulations, which will prepare your muscles and tendons for a return to normality.

Start wearing shoes around the house to help provide structured support. This will definitely help with prepearing your body for increased outdoor activities.

Take lead on mental health Expressions of interest are now open for the Chair of a new Mental Health and Wellbeing Interim Regional Body to be established in the South East and Gippsland regions.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said the Interim Regional Body will give a voice to local communities - bringing together people with local knowledge and expertise to advise and guide the government on the unique mental health and wellbeing needs of communities across the state.

The Interim Regional Bodies were a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System, and will be based in the three metropolitan regions of North-East, South-East and Western metro as well as in the Grampians, Loddon Mallee,

Hume, Gippsland and South-West areas of regional Victoria.

Each body will consist of a Chair and five members – including at least one person with lived experience of mental illness or psychological distress, and at least one person with lived experience as a family member or carer.

In its final report, the Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System set out a 10year plan to rebuild the system from the ground up, recommending a significant transformation to the way decisions are made in relation to Victoria’s mental health and wellbeing services.

The eight Interim Regional Bodies are an intermediary step towards regional governance, which will be cemented by the establishment of the legislated Regional Mental Health and Well-

being Boards across Victoria by the end of 2023.

Swans hungry for success

By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne coach Will Carr believes his Swans will be ready and raring to go when the Victorian Premier Cricket season finally gets a start.

As each Premier Cricket club patiently waits on a tick off from Cricket Victoria about a potential 13 November season start - most likely to be in a one-day format once again - Carr said the hunger of his group is palpable to get back out there despite the possibility of limited preparation.

It does pose a challenge, but you have to be adaptable,” he said.

“In a perfect world you want everyone together, it’s not ideal - some clubs will be more disadvantaged, some better, but in the wash we’re pretty adaptable.

“There’s no perfect scenario, you might be waiting a while for it to be perfect. I’m keen to get things going personally.

“We’ve got a couple of guys, maybe two or three that live Metro but outside 25km so that poses a challenge - CV (Cricket Victoria) are doing their best to give clarity from the Government, but when it all washes out, I still think the 13th is the way to go.

“We want to use every weekend available to us.”

Carr said the Swans were well placed, fullyfit and raring to get stuck into the action after a strong off-season which saw the club recruit Gippsland run machine Jordan Gilmore, reigning DDCA Wookey Medalist Ruwantha Kellepotha, as well as gun spinner Luke Shelton from Sydney Premier Cricket.

And with stable development expected underneath, and a strong core of senior players such as Devin Pollock, skipper Michael Wallace, Lachie Sperling, Nathan Lambden, Jackson Fry and Callum Dodson, Carr expects a tight race for spots heading into the opening round.

“We’ve recruited a couple of handy players who we expect to feature in round 1 - there’ll be a few who miss out,” he said.

“Adding Jordy Gilmore, we could have three new faces, so 14 doesn’t go into 11, so there will be a few unlucky guys, but that’s what we want.

“We wanted more depth and experience and allow some of our developing players to develop properly.”

Carr said that while not having the full group together has provided its share of challenges, plans for the 2021/22 season were going well as they look to find the right mix.

Callum Dodson sends one down against St Kilda last season. 227545 “Certainly as planning goes, you still talk on Zoom and on the phone - we haven’t been able to get a good understanding of form wise, but that’s a bit more to do with the lower grades to see how they’re developing,” he said.

“That’s where it hurts you the most not being able to work with these guys in the pre-season - we’ve managed to get into small groups, so the planning is going well.

“Coming into Round 1, there will be no excuses. It’ll be competitive for a couple of spots.”

Carr said while not confirmed, he expects all-rounder Lachie Sperling to feature at the top again with boom youngster Ashley Chandrasinghe, and believes the middle-order has what it takes to do some real damage.

“Sperlo, as everyone would agree, is a super talent, and he’d be the first to admit he hasn’t fulfilled that just yet,” he said.

“But I’m confident that he can deliver at the top - he’s a very good player. He’s working hard

on turning his 30s into 50s and beyond.

“We’re not 100 per cent settled but that middle order is strong. Shelts (Luke Shelton) will come in seven or eight and is an option at the top too depending on the situation of the game so that’s exciting.”

On Chandrasinghe - who once again racked up the runs in Darwin during the Victorian offseason but has returned home for a break before the season - Carr said that there was every reason to be very excited.

“I don’t want to get too carried away, but just looking at him in a few nets sessions, he just looks unbelievable,” he said.

Another interesting selection puzzle for Carr and his coaches to navigate in the leadup to Round 1 is the bowling mix.

With an abundance of spinners such as Ashvin Adihetty, Lachie Sperling, Luke Shelton, Isaiah Jassal, Ruwantha Kellepotha, Harrish Kannan all set to push for selection, alongside quicks Nathan Lambden, Jackson

Fry, Cal Dodson, Justin Lambden and Ev Allaway, Carr admitted there was plenty to ponder.

“It’s a good problem to have - we’ll go in with what we think is the best balance and what will win us the game,” he said.

“Last year we went in with two quicks sometimes, if Lambden, Fry, Dodson are fit they probably get selected but they didn’t all quite get together last year.

“We might find ourselves going with four spinners - you need six bowling options in one-dayers so we realistically could play Kellepotha, Adihetty, Sperling, Shelton in the same side, but it also gives us an option to develop properly.

“You’ve got to keep a good eye on what’s best for their development and not just the mantle of being a first XI player all the time.”

The Swans - at this stage - are expected to host Melbourne Uni in Round 1.

Former Cranbourne champion to join the Kangaroos

By Nick Creely Officer has significantly bolstered its coaching panel for season 2022 by the signing of a Cranbourne premiership hero Troy Tharle as non-playing senior assistant coach and forwards coach.

Tharle - the two-time premiership Eagle who played 230 senior games, kicking 186 goals - retired from football last season after a series of concussions, but will now rekindle his relationship with his 2011 premiership coach, Doug Koop, as the Kangaroos look to continue building on a promising 2021 season. He will also serve as the seniors runner.

“It’s close to home and I have a lot of contacts at Officer, it just feels right,“ Tharle said.

“I’ve had a lot of coaches over my career, Doug Koop taught me the game and I cannot wait to work with him and develop my skills off field.”

Tharle added he was looking forward to bringing his own style to Starling Road. “(I’ll bring) a modern style to the forward line to compliment the other coaching styles, it’s going to be high pressure and exciting footy going forward,” he said.

“I’ve reviewed the games from 2021 and I’ve got a lot of fresh ideas and I’m looking forward to an excellent season at Starling Rd in 2022. I’m really happy to be here.” cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

“I had a great individual season in 2021

and whilst it’s great to be recognised, that’s not why we play the game,” Bernardo said.

“I’ve got a lot more to offer and I’m ready to embrace this challenge head on.

“More than anything else I’m just excited

to be back at Officer in 2022. It’s a great club, it’s well run and it’s an amazing group to be a part of.”

Kangaroos coach Doug Koop said the club was delighted to welcome Tharle to the club, having been a major part of his development in his football, knowing exactly what the beloved big man will bring to the group in 2022.

“I could never doubt his team first attitude,” Koop said.

“He’s been a very good player and he was very easy to coach. Troy has won a number of flags and knows what it’s like to sacrifice for the team.

“I’m looking forward to Troy imparting some of his wisdom and experience on our club.”

Koop said it was also exciting to have an on-field coaching presence in Bernardo to help continue the development of their players.

“AB (Anthony Bernardo) had a great season and was always coming to the coaching team with new ideas,” he said.

“This is clearly the next step in his football journey and I’m excited to see what he brings to the table next year.

“He was a great addition to the club last year and more than anything else I’m just excited that he’s committed his future to Officer.”

Burgmann’s breakthrough

By David Nagel The art of resilience has taken on a new form in the world of Covid - with Berwick teenager Keeley Burgmann riding a roller-coaster ride to selection in the 2021 Australian 17-Under Netball Squad.

The 17-year-old goaler - and year-11 student from St Francis Xavier College in Beaconsfield - has been a regular Victorian representative since first earning selection in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) 15-Under team in 2019.

That initial SSV trip to Caloundra not only triggered her desire to reach the top levels of the game, but to this point in time is the only planned interstate trip that has actually come to fruition.

As a bottom-age player, Burgmann was selected as a vice-captain of the 2020 Victorian 17-Under team, and this year was named captain of the squad that was due to head to Tasmania to take on the best young talent from around the country.

But the affects of Covid put those exciting plans on the back-burner.

“The first trip (15 under) was pretty exciting, that was my first breakthrough into anything at a higher level,” Burgmann explained.

“We played in Queensland and stayed at Caloundra for a week, which was great, and we came second to South Australia.

“That was the point where I realised, I wanted to do something with my netball, I wanted to push myself and try for training positions at VNL clubs and things like that.

“Last year the nationals got called off a month out from the championships, because it was too risky with Covid to go the Tasmania.

But towards the end of the year they put us in a Vic squad and we trained for a couple of weeks so it was good to get some training that we missed out on earlier last year.

“And then this year, a week out, nationals got cancelled again which was really devastating but did teach us all some resilience.”

Burgmann and talented netballers from all over Australia missed the opportunity to shine on the big stage and earn selection in the national squad.

But an expert panel of selectors, who have overseen a lot of the girl’s development over the last few years, joined forces to select this year’s Australian squad that will come together for a training camp from December 5 to 11 at the AIS in Canberra.

Burgmann said it was dream come true, and a surprise, to be identified as one of the brightest young talents in the country.

“When we first got the email, we were sitting

“We sat there for two minutes in silence because none of us knew what to say, we were all in disbelief.

“But it’s very much and honor and privilege to be part of it and it’s something that really means a lot because of the work you put in and the challenges we’ve experienced through Covid.

“It’s just a nice achievement after two nationals being cancelled and all the other things we’ve been through over the last two years.”

Burgmann is a natural leader, confirmed by her selection as captain of the state team, and it’s a responsibility she enjoys and takes seriously.

“I think I was chosen as captain because I was comfortable in the Vic program after doing it the year before, and that experience made me more vocal because I knew what it was like to be the bottom-ager.

“I use a lot of voice on court. I’m a very vocal player and try and lead by example. If I say something, or offer advice, I have to be able to back it up and do it myself.”

Burgmann doesn’t consider herself an elite athlete, but has worked hard at her craft to make up for those minor limitations.

“I’m not a very quick player so I have to be smart, thinking about my next move, the timing, and you start to learn when and where to move to, “she said.

“When restrictions allow, I do PT sessions on Saturday, and I’m very lucky that my dad (Shane) runs with me, sometimes six times a week and two times a day.”

But, while dedicated to her netball, she has a great outlook on life for a person of such a young age.

“I do work hard at it but it’s important to keep a good balance in life because netball could stop quickly if I got injured or something like that,” she said.

“My dream is to give it my very best shot and get to the highest level I can get to. Whatever that is…that’s whatever it’s meant to be.

“Everyone’s dream is to make it to the Vixens, but for me it’s just about making it to the highest level I can and I’ll be happy with that as long as I’ve given it my all.”

An added bonus of being selected in the national squad is earning a scholarship and access to elite training facilities at the Victorian Institute of Sport in Albert Park.

Burgmann will train two to three nights a week, with access to elite levels of strength and conditioning coaching, physios, doctors, wellbeing, life-style coaches and nutrition, sure to help her take her netball to the next level..

Her busy upcoming schedule – which includes training with Australia and the VIS, and doing year 12 in 2022 - is likely to change what her 2021 campaign looked like, which included playing A Grade for ROC in AFL Outer East and being captain of Hawks 17-under VNL. And Keeley has certainly not forgotten her netball roots, which started by playing netball with friends in prep at St Michael’s Primary School in Berwick.

She joined the ROC Netball Club and Gippsland Storm in her first year at secondary school and worked her way through the age groups and divisions at both clubs.

Burgmann then fell in love with the Hawks and knocked back offers from other VNL clubs to join their program in 2019.

She left Gippsland Storm the same year but keeps a strong connection with the head coach at Storm, Simon O’Shanassy, who also doubles as her A Grade coach at ROC. “He has played a massive part in my netball journey and he’s one of the people that have molded me into the player I am today” Burgmann said.

Keeley also wanted to thank her family – mum Jacinta, dad Shane, brother Josh and sister Taylah for their support, and also the many people who helped her forge her pathway in the sport.

“There are too many people to name individually, but I want to thank the ROC Netball Club, Gippsland Storm and Hawks…through those clubs there are multiple people who have helped me in so many different ways.”

Sri Lankan star signs at Buckley in major coup for club

Yet another high-profile name has joined the ranks of the Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 competition, with former Sri Lankan Test batter Mahela Udawette signing on for Buckley Ridges.

The 35-year-old has moved to Australia, arriving in late September and has linked up with the DDCA powerhouses in a major coup, with the left-handed top-order batter having permanent residency.

While Udawette has been in bubbles with the Sri Lankan international set-up in recent months, he has retired professionally from the game.

Udawatte played two Test matches for Sri Lanka - his last coming in June, 2018 against the West Indies - as well as nine ODIs and eight Twenty20 international matches.

At First Class level, Udawatte has notched up close to 10,000 runs with 14 centuries, eight List A centuries and a Twenty20 century, and in the recent 2020/21 Sri Lankan oneday competition he scored the most runs for Moors Sports Club with 354 at 50.57 with a century and three half-centuries.

“It’s good for the club, and we see him as a long-term player for Buckley Ridges, he’s moved to the area,” he said.

“It’ll make a huge difference, and with Manjula (Munasinghe) coming on as coach we really hope he sticks around.

“We believe he can be really similar to what David White did for us, so we see him as a bit of a replacement for him.”

Rattle added that the club just “got lucky” in securing the Sri Lankan star, with the batter related to club president Sonny De Silva through marriage.

The Bucks have also previously announced that former Glamorgan batsman and England Under 19 player Ben Wright has

signed on at the club, with the pair expected to open the batting in what should provide bowlers with a few sleepless Friday night.

Wright has also been announced as Buckley’s Turf 1 skipper this season.

“Ben and him will open if DJ doesn’t come back - from everything we’ve seen on Youtube he’s really attacking,” Rattle said.

“So he should definitely like our ground - he’s going to fit in well and is keen to get here.”

Rattle also confirmed that champion Bucks all-rounder Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson is still weighing up his future in the association but wouldn’t come back until after Christmas if he was to return, while West Indian Jerome Jones’ hopes of returning this season has been dashed, but was hoping to return for the following season.

Buckley have also snared experienced Berwick batsman Josh Holden where he will add plenty of depth to the club, while impressive seamer Nimesh Kariyawasam has crossed over from North Dandenong and will be a crucial part of the bowling attack.The Bucks have also lost a few, with Chanaka Welegedara returning to Strathmore, while overseas pair Ian Cockbain and Benny Howell won’t return, with Cockbain joining Mornington Peninsula powerhouses Langwarrin. Club stalwart Susa Pradeep has

departed for Endeavour Hills.

“We are thrilled to have Mahela playing for us,” Buckley president Sonny De Silva said.

“I had been watching him for a while given our family links (his uncle is married to Sonny’s first cousin) but didn’t realise he wanted to leave the Sri Lankan set-up.

“I got on the phone as soon as Richie (Hope) got wind of his availability, and convinced Mahela to (come to Melbourne) and play for Bucks.

“He will no doubt dominate in the DDCA. “We welcome Mahela, his lovely wife and three kids to the Buckley family,” Sonny said.

Local Olympian earns scholarship

By Nick Creely Narre Warren racewalking prodigy and Olympian Bec Henderson has been selected by The Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) for the 2022 Scholarship and Mentoring Program.

The SAHOF announced on Monday 16 outstanding young athletes for the Tier 3 Scholarship Program, which hails from a variety of sports. Each rising young athlete will receive a $2500 sporting grant plus support and encouragement across the next 14 months from SAHOF and its esteemed member base.

Henderson, 20, is the first race-walker to be selected in the program, and was the youngest athlete to compete in the 20km race walk at the recent Tokyo Olympics, and said it was an honour to earn a scholarship.

Outside of athletics, the rising local star was Dux at Berwick College, and attained Scholars at Monash University. After sport, she aspires

to study medicine while helping inspiring the next generation of athletes.

“Becoming a Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship Holder is so amazing as it will help give me the resources to continue to compete at an elite level, while keeping up with my studies and work,“ she said.

“It will allow me to continue improving and moving up in the senior ranks, to hopefully become the best possible athlete and person I can be.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this awesome program and can’t wait for the season ahead.“ Sport Australia Hall of Fame chief executive officer, Adrianne Sarkozy said it was terrific to see so many different sports represented.

“We are all delighted to see such a varied array of sports represented in this program,“ she said.

“From the traditional Olympic and Paralympic sports such as swimming, cycling and athletics to Olympic and Paralympic debut sports such as skateboarding, sport climbing and bocce. Additionally, the program provides inclusion for professional and non-Olympic/ Paralympic sports such as cricket, netball, lawn bowls and many others.

“It is a unique program and an opportunity to inspire the next generation of Australian sporting heroes.”

Sue Stanley OAM, the Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship and Mentoring Program chair, said it will help shape the futures for these young athletes.

“We acknowledge a further 16 elite young Australian athletes as Tier 3 Scholarship Holders and, through the Scholarship & Mentoring Program, offer them encouragement and financial assistance to help shape their athletic futures and achieve their dreams,“ she said.

Local cricketers, it’s time to dust off those cricket kit bags and gear up for a big season.

With the Victorian State Government’s announcement that lockdown will end in Metropolitan Melbourne on Thursday night at 11:59pm, community sport has been given the green light to proceed with training from Friday in a big boost for summer sporting seasons.

With the reasons to leave home and curfew ending from Friday, and no travel limit imposed, cricket associations and clubs will now enter overdrive with the weekend of 13 November now almost certain to see the start of the cricket season.

For the short-term, until the state reaches 80 per cent vaccination rate, there will be no travel into the regions but it won’t impact on the start of the season, with that benchmark set to be reached by Melbourne Cup weekend.

While competition is not permitted from Friday, full training can begin with the minimum required, but changing rooms will be closed for the time being.

While there is no group size limit for training, there will be no spectators allowed, and there is no practice matches against other clubs permitted.

In line with recommendations released recently from Cricket Victoria, the West Gippsland Cricket Association announced its season will begin on Saturday 13 November, with the season to once again be played in a one-day format.

The season start means clubs should get the opportunity to get in almost three weeks of pre-season training before the season kicks off. The season will comprise of 14 one-day matches of 40 overs per side with one-day rules.

The top-three grades will play with a white ball and coloured clothing, while the remaining grades will play with a red ball and white clothing unless an agreement is reached between both teams and both clubs wear coloured clothing.

In other associations, the Mornington Peninsula Cricket Association (MPCA) is also set for a 13 November start, the Dandenong District Cricket Association hasn’t made any official announcements, but is almost certain to be begin on the same date, while the Victorian Premier Cricket competition is exploring a 13 November start too which will be played in a one-day format once again.

Kisnorbo signs extension and remains at Casey Fields

By Nick Creely Melbourne City FC recently announced the re-signing of Mens squad coach Patrick Kisnorbo until the end of the 2024/25 A-League season.

The Casey Fields based club couldn’t be more delighted with Kisnorbo’s first season of charge of City, leading the team both premiership and championship glory.

After retiring from playing in 2016, and coaching City’s Youth and Women’s team before taking up the Men’s head coach role last year, Melbourne City FC director Michael Petrillo said the re-signing provided great stability to the squad and the club moving forward.

“Patrick is an exceptional club person and truly believes in the way we want to play our football,” he said.

“To see him come through the Academy, Women’s team and now the A League Mens team not only reinforces the club’s stability, but it’s also testament to the pathway we are able to provide for young aspiring coaches.

“We look forward to creating more success and to keep lifting the bar on and off the field in the coming years.”

Kisnorbo said it was an honour to re-sign at City, and reiterated that he simply can’t wait to see what the future holds.

“I’m incredibly honoured and humbled to be given the opportunities that I have had at the club,” he said.

“The level of support that we receive here is second to none and it has allowed me to develop both on the pitch as a coach and off the pitch as a person.

“It’s an incredible opportunity to extend my contract for another two years and continue to be part of such a positive environment. As a playing group we want to push ourselves and play our attacking style of football.”

Patrick Kisnorbo will remain at Melbourne City long-term.
