In bloom Every year for over 60 years the Tesselaar family have brought spectacular fields of colour, Dutch culture, cuisine and entertainment to the Dandenong Ranges in a celebration of spring and sunshine.

Unfortunately for the second year in a row, the Tulip Festival had to be cancelled but rows and rows of tulips are still in full and beautiful bloom at the 65 acre property.

Paul Tesselaar said the planting this year was quite meticulous and it was disappointing people couldn’t experience the beauty in person but the team is looking forward to welcoming people into the gates for KaBloom Festival in March.

The combination of a dirt road and speed has already seen one tragedy happen along this Avonsleigh road.

And residents on Phillip Road are fed up

with the dangerous driving and excessive speed limit which is just an accident waiting to happen.

Dale, Matt and Jackie have each witnessed cars risking their own lives and others as they take blind corners too fast, hoon and push on-

coming cars into the nature strip.

When Dale moved into his house two years ago he assumed the entire road was 60km, with one section being 50km.

“It’s a skinny dirt road, which I assumed was maximum 60km because to go any more than

60, you’re really endangering people’s lives and there’s many spots along the road where you’ve got to actually pull over and let the other guy through to get past,” he said.

This bulletin provides regular updates and stories about recovery and clean-up from the June 2021 storms and floods both in our local community and across Victoria’s affected areas.

Bushfire Recovery Victoria proudly works in partnership with council and the local community to support recovery.

AN UPDATE FROM YARRA RANGES COUNCIL COMMUNITY MEETINGS TO PREPARE FOR THE FIRE SEASON Council will be hosting Community Recovery Information Sessions about fuel management and the upcoming fire season on Thursday 7 and Saturday 9 October. Sessions will have a particular focus on the extra fuel generated by the June storm event in the Dandenong Ranges and surrounds.

All land managers are dealing with the challenges of extra fuel load in the landscape, following the storms.

Community members will hear from representatives of the CFA, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), Parks Victoria, Bushfire Recovery Victoria, Department of Transport (VicRoads) and Council about the coming fire season, local preparations and progress.

These meetings will also provide community members with information on what to focus on in preparing private property for the fire season, as well as where you can go for more information and assistance.

CLEAN-UP PROGRAM

PUT YOUR HAND UP AND HELP YOUR COMMUNITY RECOVER

It has been three months since the June storms and floods impacted many communities in Victoria. For those who have lived through it, there’s still a long way to go.

We’re looking for community-minded people to get involved with Councilsupported Regional Community Recovery Committees (RCRCs), to help with recovery from the pandemic and recent storm events.

In the past few weeks the BRV team visited impacted areas to assess clean-up works that are currently underway and damaged properties, including those that are registered under our residential Storm and Flood Clean-up program.

Council has committed $800,000 for the RCRCs, to gather information and identify recovery priorities for their communities, create a Community-Led Recovery Plan and recommend grant funding for local projects.

To help us capture the full extent of the damage and the lasting effect it’s had on locals, we brought the talented crew from Visual Production Agency with us to capture drone footage and interview several property owners.

Our RCRCs will be inclusive and be made up to reflect the diversity of our communities. We encourage anyone who is passionate about and interested in their community to fill out an Expression of Interest.

We were humbled by their stories and willingness to share their experiences with us – thank you. We’re looking forward to seeing the final video when it’s ready.

JUNE 2021 EXTREME WEATHER EVENT LEARNING REVIEW Emergency Management Victoria (EMV), in collaboration with the Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES), is leading a Learning Review into the June extreme weather event to ensure lessons of state-wide multi-agency significance and aspects of particular interest to impacted communities are identified, implemented, and shared across the emergency management sector and with impacted communities.

An important component of the Learning Review is capturing community sentiment. Phone interviews commenced in early September for randomly selected community members within the geographic locations impacted by the event. You may receive a phone call asking you a series of questions which will take around 12 minutes to complete. All answers will remain confidential.

If you do not receive a phone call but wish to share your experiences you can provide feedback through your Council.

The information captured through the community sentiment phone interviews will inform the Learning Review and development of a publicly available community report and the continuous improvement of our ability to manage emergencies in the future.

IN BRIEF Monbulk house fire CFA crews responded to reports of a house fire on Coulson Road, Monbulk at around 4.40am on 23 September.

12 CFA units from Monbulk, Silvan, Kallista, Emerald, Bayswater and Yellingbo attended the scene, with support from Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

Crews arrived to find a single storey home fully involved by fire, which has caused severe damage to the structure.

All occupants safely escaped the blaze and were accounted for by CFA members.

The scene was declared safe at around 7.10am but crews remained on scene for some time blacking out to ensure no further flare ups occurred.

It’s like Mad Max From page 1 Dale was bewildered to learn the road was actually 100km and although a local back road, he has since learnt it is used as a shortcut.

“It’s a big hooning element and there’s also the other element, normal people in a hurry or tradies or delivery vans and this sort of stuff that you use Phillip Road as a back shortcut between the Woori road and the Emerald road.”

Jackie has lived on Phillip Road for 23 years and while she said the dangerous driving has always been an issue, it seems to have increased, with more people taking unnecessary risks.

“It’s probably gotten worse over the years.

More so in the last five or so years because it’s become a bit of a thoroughfare or an easy way for people to get from one side to the other or use it as a bit of a drag strip,” she said.

While most of the time Phillip Road is just used by residents, Jackie said after 5pm as people head home from work, it turns to chaos.

“I’ve had times coming home from work at maybe five o’clock at night and there’s been three of them following each other one after the other going fast and speeding around the corners and it’s a nightmare.”

For Matt, even though his house is removed from the most dangerous section of road, he said pulling out of his own driveway is a challenge. “[The cars] just go so fast and it makes it dangerous for us to pull out onto the road.

You’ve always got to be so vigilant about who’s roaring down,” he said.

As a father to a young child, Matt is also concerned about the worst case scenario should his son get out onto the road and a car is unable to stop.

“So when he’s up and about running

around, we’re terrified if he ever ventures down to the road, that’s going to be a major concern of ours,” Matt said.

“When he’s on his bike or charging around, he might venture out to the road, and when they’re going that fast, they’re just not going to be able to stop in time.”

Dale has similar fears for his grandchildren when they are allowed to visit again after restrictions ease but also for pedestrians and horse riders who use the road.

“I saw a woman the other day with a newborn baby stumbling along the dirt road and she was trying to negotiate her way down to the local shop,” he said.

Had he known Phillip Road was such a race track for hoon drivers, Dale said he would have never bought his house two years ago.

Nonetheless, he has tried everything possible to get the speed limit changed by going to Cardinia Council and the Department of Transport but has been ignored at every turn.

Ranges Ward councillor Jeff Springfield said this issue had been communicated to him a number of times and the council has explored all options by going to the DoT and Cardinia highway patrol.

The council’s traffic management officers stated the VicRoads State Speed Zoning Guidelines (SSZG) were being followed in this area and an “End 50” sign denoted the difference between a built up area and a non-built up area.

“While the default speed limit in the eastern section of Phillip Road is 100km/h, this does not mean it is safe to travel at this speed, with the speed limit merely being the maximum permissible legal speed,” the statement said.

Cr Springfield said there are a number of roads in the shire that have the ‘default rural

zoning’ speed limit attached to them.

“In my personal opinion I don’t believe the current SSZG provides enough flexibility for the local government to administer a more appropriate approach when assessing the individual needs and circumstances of our local road network,” he said.

Sergeant Fiona Tolmie from Emerald police station said the issue was raised with the police and Highway Patrol units will be tasked with actively monitoring the road.

After seeing the tragedy unfold in 2015 which claimed the lives of three teenagers, neither Jackie or Matt can understand how the entirety of Phillip Road, bar the 50km section where the accident happened, can still be 100km.

“If it was limited to say 50 I think it would act as a deterrent but at the moment, there’s just nothing deterring them from driving as fast as they like,” Matt said.

“Whereas I think if we had a limit and then we could police it somehow, I think that would be the best way to put a stop to the bad driving or the dangerous driving.”

“It’s completely the wrong speed because there’s so many corners, there’s lots of trees and you can’t see around any of them at all,” Jackie said.

“My family would like to see the speed reduced and potentially have it blocked off at some point, to create two no through roads so that it’s not that thoroughfare as well.”

Matt, Dale and Jackie each said it’s just a matter of time before another fatality happens or a major collision occurs and they just hope it doesn’t involve any of them.

“Until something really serious happens, that’s probably when obviously they’ll have to do something but it’s just ridiculous.”

Victorians unfortunately didn’t make the 80 per cent vaccination target by Sunday 26 September but the State government has announced restrictions will ease as of midnight Tuesday 28 September.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer has said there will be a modest easing to restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria, in line with the Roadmap.

This means Melbourne residents will be able to undertake ‘contactless’ recreation at outdoor facilities, such as boating, tennis or golf and the 10km radius will also expand to 15km for exercise and shopping.

The gathering size outdoors will increase to up to five adults, from two households, if all adults are fully vaccinated and personal training will be able to take place with five fully vaccinated people outside plus a fully vaccinated trainer.

Restrictions on playgrounds will be lifted with normal public gathering limits but masks can be removed to eat and drink at the playground.

Operation Scoreboard Police ramped up enforcement on Victoria’s roads across the AFL Grand Final long weekend following a spate of tragic deaths over the period last year.

Operation Scoreboard ran statewide from 12:01am Thursday 23 September to 11:59pm Sunday 26 September, with a focus on speeding and impaired driving.

Five lives were lost over last year’s Grand Final long weekend and there were more than 120 collisions which resulted in injury.

Police were determined to avoid a repeat of the same tragic loss of life and urged drivers to make the right decisions.

A 46-year-old female driver was travelling west on Burwood highway at Tecoma when she was stopped by police just before midnight on Saturday 25 September. The woman underwent an evidentiary breath test which allegedly returned a reading of .092.

The woman was issued with a penalty infringement notice which incurred a $545 fine and six months loss of licence.

Covid case update As of Monday 27 September at 11am, the Yarra Ranges had a total of 21 active cases in the shire. Three of those cases had been listed in the 24 hours prior and were identified in the postcodes of 3795, 3782 and 3137.

Cases do not necessarily reflect the location where a person contracted the virus but rather where they live.

Victoria shaken up

By Renee Wood During such unprecedented times with the pandemic, lockdowns and protests - Victorians have now added an earthquake to their already shaken up lives.

Geoscience Australia confirmed a 5.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 9.15am Wednesday 22 September at the epicentre near Mansfield at a depth of approximately 10kms.

Yarra Ranges residents have reported feeling the quake, including Chum Creek resident Cameron Betts who was working at home.

“It sounded like rumbling and I thought it was the washing machine and then my wife said quick come here and we have some pretty big glass planes in our windows and they were just flexing like nothing else,” Cameron Betts said.

“My daughter was very scared, I don’t think

her heart’s quite calmed down yet to be honest.”

Mr Betts also shared with Star Mail some incredible CCTV footage capturing his office shaking in Montrose.

“It’s amazing how much it actually shook, when I logged in and saw it I thought, wow that’s a lot bigger than I thought it was.”

It was also a strange birthday present to receive for one Ferntree Gully resident, Dianne Wood, who was at home with her family at the time of the event.

“You could hear like a little bit of a rumble first and it started to slowly get louder. As it got louder the house just began to shake and then the shaking slowly got worse and worse, and I thought this is a bit bigger than just a little one,” Dianne Wood said.

“It will forever be a memorable day in the years to come, I can always say that the earth moved on this day for me.”

A 4.0 (Mw) aftershock was also recorded

15 minutes after the initial event and Deputy Premier James Merlino has warned more aftershocks and tremors could be on the way for the South East.

“Geoscience has confirmed there is a possibility that we may receive further aftershocks and potential risk of further earthquakes, indeed more aftershocks could occur for weeks, if not months,” James Merlino said.

“This was quite a significant event, and quite scary for a lot of people so please take care, keep observing the EMV alerts and warnings that have been issued.”

Buildings were damaged closer to the CBD and in Mansfield but it’s believed there was no significant building damage in the Yarra Ranges or Knox area.

Vic Emergency issued a warning following the earthquake for the entire state but it has since been reduced and only in place for the Woods Point/Mount Buller/Rawson area.

Council’s oversight delays pavilion build

By Mikayla van Loon It’s taken six years for a new sports pavilion at Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve to be approved and just when works were about to begin, an oversight by Yarra Ranges Council has delayed the build once again.

Mount Evelyn Sports and Community Hub (MESCH) president Bryan McCarthy and vice president Mal Darke had been aiming to have the current pavilion demolished by the start of August with the build starting early September.

But even though the council approved the planning permit, the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) had not signed off on the build prior to the permit being issued.

“The council has failed to let DELWP know that this is what was actually happening and they’ve actually approved the planning application without DELWP’s input into it,” Mr McCarthy said.

“Not that they probably would have stopped them from approving it but they would have put conditions on there to obviously protect the bush.”

Mr Darke said DELWP would have been consulted in the very early stages of the council’s master plan for Mount Evelyn in 2015.

“The council should well and truly know that DELWP was the owner of the land because they would have consulted them through the revision of the master plan. So it’s a huge mistake,” he said.

Mr McCarthy said the repercussions and worst case scenario would be that the builder pulls out, contractual penalties and costs are imposed and the cost of building materials may go up which could eat into the designated budget.

The football and cricket clubs which use Mount Evelyn Recreation Reserve will now also be without their own club rooms for the majority of next year’s season.

“The delays we’re experiencing now, it’s obviously going to be tacked on so we’re probably not going to have rooms for the entirety of the mailcommunity.com.au

“So there’s financial impacts for the junior club, there’s financial impacts for the senior club not being able to hold functions, not being able to have home games, not being able to have the same amount of people come through the gates every weekend to watch local football.”

Billanook ward councillor Tim Heenan said Yarra Ranges Council has been working closely with DELWP to resolve this issue.

“DELWP has given their consent for an amended permit to be issued subject to conditions, which Council has now amended and issued. Beyond that, no other changes to the permit conditions have been made,” Cr Heenan said.

Mr McCarthy and Mr Darke understand that further provisions may be put in place for the build after DELWP’s review but they are concerned it will mean certain features that

had been planned for the building will be compromised.

“We are not looking forward to having a lesser building than what’s already been agreed to by us,” Mr McCarthy said.

Cr Heenan said once a building permit has been issued, the pavilion works can get underway but with recent construction industry shutdowns, this could be delayed even further.

“I sincerely hope that this sort of oversight never happens again,” Cr Heenan said.

By the time these issues are resolved, it could be late October before demolition works begin.

“The current building is empty, it’s been stripped of anything usable and all the memorabilia. So the building’s not actually in a condition that can be used by the clubs. It’s just an empty shell at the moment waiting for demolition.”

Long road ahead for Sanctuary

By Mikayla van Loon The Dandenong Ranges is home to a number of popular national parks and reserves, many of which were the most affected by the storms in June.

But one of the most devastating losses has been the destruction of a number of statues and buildings at William Ricketts Sanctuary.

The 1.7 hectare display of William Ricketts’ 92 clay sculptures, which celebrate the heritage and culture of Aborginial peoples, was surrounded by a canopy of mountain ash trees.

“Assessment of the storm damage at William Ricketts Sanctuary has found 32 sculptures have been damaged by falling trees,” Parks Victoria district manager Victoria Purdue said.

“The public toilets, original residence, Stone Studio and Kiln have also been damaged as well as fencing, pathways and handrails.”

Parks Victoria’s rangers have been working closely with arborists to identify and clear thousands of hazardous trees and assess the damage across the Dandenongs, including William Ricketts Sanctuary.

Restoration of the sculptures and buildings is still a while off, as tonnes of debris is also cleared from walking tracks and roads ready for the bushfire season.

Parks Victoria is working with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning as part of Forest Fire Management Victoria to ensure the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges are prepared for the summer bushfire season.

This includes the annual slashing program to over 160 kilometres of fuel breaks, with staff prioritising the clearing of vehicle and fire access tracks, fuel breaks and management of green waste debris.

Parks Victoria is also conscious of the return of tourists and bushwalkers when kilometre restrictions ease in coming weeks under the Victorian government’s roadmap out of lockdown.

“These areas remain dangerous for the public to enter – the risk of weakened or damaged trees and branches falling is still extremely high, even on days that look calm. There is often no warning and no time to get out of the way.”

While some parks and walking tracks have been made safe to reopen, Parks Victoria is asking people to remain on the dedicated path “We’re asking Victorians to put their safety first and observe site closures, signage and fenced-off areas as trees, rocks and soil may continue to move – especially during or after rain,” Ms Purdue said.

“The Sanctuary will need to remain closed into 2022 as we carry out the significant and complex work needed to make it safe for people to enjoy once more.”

Power of medical choice

By Mikayla van Loon It may never cross some people’s minds that one day they may be unable to make decisions for themselves particularly when it comes to their health and wellbeing.

In many cases that’s where a Medical Power of Attorney or what was changed to the Appointment of Medical Treatment Decision Maker (AMTDM) in 2018, comes into effect.

But for the Norman family from Monbulk, it was too little too late and instead they had to learn the hard way.

Marina Norman, 45, has lived with multiple sclerosis (MS) for 12 years and until recently she had been making all her own medical decisions with the help of her husband Ross.

After Marina was hospitalised a year ago, a government guardian was appointed to make medical decisions on her behalf because Ross didn’t have the medical power of attorney in place.

“She was in the hospital in Ferntree Gully, and that’s where they sent around some, they might have been psychologists or psychiatrists and they said that basically people should manage her activities because she wasn’t able to do it now,” Ross said.

Up until Tuesday 21 September, Marina had been living at home with Ross and their eight year old son Michael but under the advice of the guardian, Marina has since been removed from the home and placed in a care facility in Watsonia.

From what Ross can understand, this decision was based on an incident where Michael was playing with some toys and accidently hit his mother in the face.

“And so that was the catalyst to get Marina out of the house because although my son loves his mum and his mum loves him and we love each other, we’ve got no problems in the

Marina’s condition had been deteriorating, she was in a wheelchair, her speech had become impacted and her ability to feed herself was getting worse but Ross said his wife had constant care from either himself or an employed carer.

Since the government guardian was appointed a year ago, Ross has gone through the VCAT process twice to be the nominated decision maker but has been unsuccessful on both occasions.

KLR Legal Services solicitor Keren Roma said section 55 of the Medical Treatment Planning and Decisions Act 2016 outlines who will

be able to make medical decisions on behalf of someone else.

“First, it will be anyone appointed by the person under an AMTDM. If there is no AMTDM, it will be a guardian appointed by VCAT and if neither of those apply, then the decision falls to the family members and carers, in the order set out in the Act,” she said.

“If a decision needs to be made for someone who has not made a power of attorney or AMTDM, an interested party can apply to VCAT seeking the appointment of a guardian.

“VCAT will often appoint a family member to these roles but if there is no suitable family member who is willing to be involved, then VCAT may appoint an independent party.”

Ross hopes that more people will become aware of the need to be registered as someone’s medical power of attorney or AMTDM, particularly if they are older or medically vulnerable.

“If people aren’t aware of this, they need to get on to it and realise that they need to set in place a power of attorney for the medical side and power of attorney for the financial side because if they don’t do that it goes to VCAT and the government,” he said.

“Had I thought of it, if I had put a power of attorney in for medical and financial, we wouldn’t have had this situation come upon us.”

Keren said the best way to go about getting an AMTDM is to see a solicitor, so that legally a chosen person can make any medical decisions necessary.

“People are often tempted to delay making these types of documents, thinking that they will make them if they need to when they get old. Many people leave it too late and unfortunately their decisions may be made by people they would not have chosen to do so.”

Tools down for two weeks in Greater Melbourne

By Renee Wood Many construction workers awoke to the news on Tuesday 21 September their industry was going into a two week shut down, Healesville builder Neil Schalken was one of those with two projects now on hold.

“The decision was surprising to me, it seems like a bit of a knee jerk reaction,” Neil Schalken said.

Crisis meetings with the building industry, State Government and health officials were conducted the previous night with the official statement from the State Government released just before 10pm Monday 20 September.

It followed a day of violent protests in Melbourne’s CBD, with demonstrators against restrictions being enforced on the industry, one of those being mandatory vaccinations.

“How many hundreds of thousands of trades are affected by probably 500 protest-

ers - that’s probably the hardest for anyone to swallow.”

The State Government said it also took swift action in response to rising cases on large building sites and non-compliance with health orders including mask wearing.

“We’ve been clear: if you don’t follow the rules, we won’t hesitate to take action – we have seen widespread non-compliance across the industry and that’s why we’re taking necessary steps to protect every single Victorian,” Minister for Industrial Relations Tim Pallas said.

“We put the industry on notice just a week ago, we have seen appalling behaviour on site and on our streets, and now we’re acting decisively and without hesitation.”

But many feel the whole industry shouldn’t be grouped into one, with different work settings considered lower risks of spreading Covid-19.

“I can understand it being justified for big

commercial sites and the likes, but the the housing sector or the cottage industry, as a lot of people call it - it’s a completely different playing field altogether,” Mr Schalken said.

Neil Schalken Homes has two housing builds that have been stopped and will see delays - two of thousands in the Greater Melbourne area that will have flow on affects to suppliers, sub contractors and clients.

“It’s already a battle with materials, supplies, labor and material costs constantly on the rise as well and to now put another spoke in the wheel, and flow on effects not only to the client, but also other smaller trades - cabinet makers, painters, tilers, it’ll go right down the chain unfortunately,” Neil Schalken said.

“A lot of clients they’re paying interest or they’ve outlaid money for half a project, and everyone likes it to be built in a reasonable, efficient, quick time without these hindrances.”

Emerald SES Unit Controller Ben Owen said it was due to be completed in the next two weeks but many are in the same boat.

“It’s annoying but we’re not worse off compared to families not getting their homes built or a small family where dad is a builder so we aren’t affected that way,” Unit Controller Ben Owen said.

“It’s just another two weeks, if all goes well, on a great long line we have been waiting all these years for.

The new facility will support 65 active volunteers to train and prepare for emergencies and there is potential works can continue under the government’s exemptions for health and safety projects.

“We can’t train at the moment so it’s just another added pressure on the members.

The service is trying to get around that because it’s critical that we train.”

THE LOWDOWN Q&A What is something people don’t know about you?

In my spare time, you will most likely find me plotting away in my veggie garden! I was never much of a green thumb until lockdown started and it’s now grown into one of my biggest passion projects. I find it so relaxing and it’s extremely rewarding to see all of your hard work result in some incredible produce that you can share with family and friends!

Tell us about your role as the EBL founder and singer?

EBL was another passion project that was born out of the first lockdown. Prior to Covid you would find me most weekends singing beautiful couples down the aisle on their special day and all of a sudden, that came to a grinding halt. Music has been my life for such a long time and I have been so fortunate to travel all over the world with my music and have so many incredible experiences including making it to the semi finals of ‘The Voice’ in 2017. Lockdown really made me reevaluate my passions outside of music and I must say I was feeling really down knowing I had so much time on my hands and couldn’t figure out the best way to utilise it. I wanted to put it to good use and I noticed so many people online were asking for places to buy and shop locally whilst all the bigger outlet stores were closed. That was my lightbulb moment and that is when EBL was born! I wanted to create a space for those small businesses who could still operate out of their homes and spotlight the incredible people in our local community who deserved a voice. It’s truly been such a blessing to have built this growing community and I am grateful for it every day.

What has been your most memorable moment in your time for either EBL or as a singer? Why? I would say with my music, it would definitely be having the opportunity to meet Ed Sheeran in a tiny pub in Dublin. I was lucky enough

Sarah Grimstone is a singer and the social media manager and creator of Eastern Burbs Living. to be offered an opportunity to travel with the Nova radio team on their Nova Red Room Global Tour back in 2015 through my YouTube partnership and it was the most surreal experience of my life. We travelled for 10 days across the world listening to music and meeting incredible artists but for me the stand out was Ed. He really changed my perspective on the power of songwriting and I admire his work so much.

With EBL, I would say walking into a local florist I hadn’t been to prior and having one of the staff recognise me from the page. They were so incredibly kind and so grateful for the platform and it really just made me realise that people actually care about this project and it’s more than just an Instagram page. That’s all I’ve ever wanted it to be and to know that

someone in the community can feel the love and support that I am trying to share through this page makes me emotional. EBL has grown to be such an important passion of mine and I truly believe the best moments are yet to come!

What do you love most about living in the region?

I think the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne truly has it all. It’s so leafy and relaxed yet it definitely has its pockets of bustling streets which is great! For me community is everything and I really feel that it’s growing especially during such isolating times where so many people are craving those relationships and connections.

I like to think that we are right in the triangle with access to the beautiful Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges in one direction, the Mornington just down the road in the other direction and then the city is a short 40 minutes away in the other. What more could you want! We really are spoiled for choice here and i just love that every day is a new day of discovery for cafes, restaurants and other local small businesses that are alway popping up!

What is an important issue in the region you think needs exposure?

This might be bias as EBL is very much focused around small business support but i do truly believe that with everything going on right now, our small business community needs us more than ever. These are real people with real families and when you buy from them directly, you are not only supporting their dreams, you are supporting their livelihoods. Everybody can play their small part to make such a huge difference. Next time you’re out shopping, head to that local butcher you’ve been thinking about going to, buy those flowers from the small stand on the corner, purchase that candle from the mum who spends her weekends working away in the garage and show that you truly care for the community around you because they do so much work behind closed doors for us.

Hope brings life Earlier this year I wrote an article titled, ‘Hope is life – Fear destroys it’.

The anxiety I wrote about on the 14th of this month, is driven by fear. It is not the only thing, of course that feeds on fear; anger, jealousy, domestic violence, self-loathing, anticipated failure, all do as well.

In counselling, particularly with men, I would draw a volcano on the white board – a ‘see through’ one, to be able to see the fear gases building up and name them.

The pressure cooker times we have been through with Covid, have seen these gases building up to dangerous levels.

Let me explain what I mean, with some chain reaction out comes.

A man cooped up with his partner and children in a smallish unit, without work, and the partner likewise, and her trying to home school the children, often feels a failure because he can’t adequately provide for his family. That isn’t helped when the partner opens the mail and finds a bill beyond their capacity to pay.

Knowing she can do no more, she speaks to him about some odd jobs he might be able to do in the neighborhood, and already fragile, he snaps.

“What do you want me to do? Sweep old ladies paths or put their bins out?”

“I didn’t ask to be laid off – why don’t you cut costs by turning the heater down.”

“What? And the kids and I stay cold? – Young

Demonic a dud watch Demonic Starring Carly Pope, Nathalie Bolt and Chris William Martin Rated MA15+ The latest film by District 9 director Neil Blomkamp, Demonic is a sloppy fusion of The Exorcist and The Matrix with a sorely underutilised gimmick.

Carly (Carly Pope) must enter a virtualreality simulation to communicate with Angela (Nathalie Bolt), her abusive, comatose mother.

The simulation scenes are mildly creepy and intriguing, juxtaposing an eerie ambience with pleasant pastel-coloured visuals reminiscent of the 2015 video game Life is Strange. However, these simulations are a fleeting, flimsy framing device for a corny film about demonic possession and Vatican black ops exorcists.

Pope is an engaging lead, but the film is full of blunt, awkward dialogue, and the slow pacing is mostly set-up. The demon villain’s lore is endlessly talked about, yet feels strangely incidental. The exorcists’ plan is needlessly complicated, the rules of the possession are too vague for the climax to carry much tension, and the climax suddenly hinges on a holy superweapon that comes out of nowhere. While the demon itself has a cool burly raven-like design, the film shows it too often, which makes it less scary, and giving the demon a cliched low distorted voice was a goofy mistake.

For a far better film about demonic possession and digital technology, watch the 1977 horror film Demon Seed.

Demonic is an inept, flat and contrived horror film from an otherwise talented director, and is available on DVD and iTunes.

I came across the name of an old town in King Solomon’s day called Beth-Sha-en which still flourishes today. Dr. Google said it meant ‘Place of Tranquility’.

Twang, my thoughts jumped into line.

Isn’t that what we need right now - a peaceful place of tranquility, free from the stresses of life as we have come to know them in 2020 and this year, with no clear relief on the immediate horizon?

This peace produces a HOPE which is unquestionably one of the most powerful forces in the world. As long as a person has hope they can persevere.

Conversely without hope, they are defeated.

In times like these I hang onto the last words of promise Jesus gave us before he went back to Heaven. “My peace I give you, my peace I leave with you”.

Re your article “Sparking Much Debate” 14/9/21 Our area is currently allowed to burn off 3 days per week – Friday, Saturday & Monday. Today (Friday) is far too windy and rain is predicted for Saturday & Monday.

Residents should be allowed to burn off on any day when the weather is suitable.

Increasing the number of days we can burn off does not increase the amount of waste to burn – our property sizes have not increased.

Maybe Mr Tunks should put his efforts into advising and educating people to burn ‘dry’ waste instead of ‘green’ waste. Much less smoke.

Burning off is necessary when you live on a bush block. The ‘green waste bin’ would be full within the first half hour – what do we do for the rest of the two weeks?

A must-read for forthcoming TV series New Gold Mountain, the epic four-part series to be premiered on SBS on October 13, shares with Australian audiences for the very first time the remarkable and untold story of the Chinese miners who arrived in the Victorian Goldfields in the 1850s to try to make their fortune.

In Chinese, “new gold mountain” refers to Melbourne. When gold was discovered in Central Victoria in the early 1850s, fortune seekers from around the world had flocked to Melbourne and then onwards to Ballarat and Bendigo.

The population of Victoria grew from about 77,000 in 1851 to 400,000 in 1857 and then 500,000 in 1860, with 75,000 people arriving in the colony in 1852 alone.

Among the European and American prospectors were the Chinese, whose number in Victoria reached 26,000 by 1857.

This is the year that New Gold Mountain is set, at the peak of a harsh wild west era when every man was busy amassing his own riches.

There were inevitable conflicts between the miners and the colonial authorities seeking to control them, which culminated in the Battle of the Eureka Stockade.

There were also constant, violent and even deadly disputes among the gold miners of diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

PASSION FOR PROSE WITH CHRISTINE SUN historical settings of New Gold Mountain as a landmark production – an original and ambitious attempt to re-examine an important chapter of the history of Victoria – this reviewer recommends The Chinawoman (2008) by Melbourne-based lawyer Ken Oldis, winner of the prestigious Victorian Community History Award in 2009.

New Gold Mountain begins with the discovery of a white woman’s mutilated body in the Chinese miners camp in Ballarat in 1857.

The camp’s headman is Wei Shing, who must find out what happened in order to remain in power and keep his own fortune.

In comparison, The Chinawoman begins with the discovery of a white woman’s mutilated body in today’s Exhibition Street in Melbourne CBD in 1856. The victim was Sophia Lewis, an English prostitute dubbed “the Chi-

nawoman” due to her association with wealthy men from Chinatown.

A criminal lawyer fascinated with Australian and especially Victorian history, Oldis spent years sifting through numerous legal documents, government archives, court proceedings, media reports and personal papers about the historical case.

The result is a compelling book that reads like a murder thriller, but contains extensive notes and references that shed ample light on the dubious workings of Victoria’s detective force and the travails of the local Chinese community.

The police were under enormous pressure to arrest somebody – anybody – so they resorted to employing spies and secret agents to infiltrate the Chinese community.

One of these “special detectives” appointed by the Victorian police force back then was Fook Shing, the well-connected and powerful headman of a Chinese miners camp in Bendigo.

As Oldis reveals, Fook Shing not only assisted in the arrest and interrogation of two Chinese miners as murder suspects, but he also testified at their trial, which was presided by the renowned colonial judge Redmond Barry.

The two Chinese men were convicted and hanged... but were they guilty? The answer remains to be found in The Chinawoman.

A platform for the east

By Renee Wood When the entertainment and wedding industry was stopped from the Pandemic, wedding singer Sarah Grimstone decided to put her free time to good use by turning to social media to help small businesses.

Hence, Instagram account ‘Eastern Burbs Living’ was born - a social media page shining a light on eastern Melbourne suburbs’creators, makers and businesses based in the region.

Sarah set out to create a community driven page providing exposure to many retailers, cafes and creators who’ve been hit hard by the pandemic, “There was really a gap in the markets and there’s so many incredible small businesses and people that are working so hard behind closed doors that have never really had the spotlight on their craft or what they do,” Sarah said.

“I wanted it to feel like a sense of community and a sense of discovery during a time where I think people felt really isolated.”

By bringing businesses all together on the one platform it’s made it easier for Eastern Burbs residents to also support local.

Now more than 250 posts have been shared, all scripted with purpose dedicated to a different small business or artisan.

It’s clear to see from the growing audience of almost 5500, that something like this was desperately needed from the community.

“At the start of lockdown I saw people were posting on community pages ‘where can I find a local person that makes candles?’

“So there was a demand for people to support businesses, they just didn’t know where to find them.”

One cafe who’s seen the benefits from being part of EBL was Mon Poulett, who Sarah visited and filmed a Tik Tok video of, which later gained more than 20k views.

The Instagram page Eastern Burbs Living is helping promote small businesses and creators during a tough time from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“For about three months I saw people coming in and hearing people come in off the back of her Tik Tok and that was completely out of the goodness of her own heart,” Lo Croiset said.

Welcoming visitors back The Wombalana Wild Garden redevelopment has been a big project for the Selby Community House. We soft launched the garden to the community in May this year and expected 200 people to attend, but were completely blown away when we welcomed 500+ community members to the launch. The day was a wonderful event of local musicians, children’s arts projects and activities by local artists, free barista coffee and food, and a hands on animal show with crocodiles and snakes.

Next month the final piece - a giant Diprotodont, built from recycled materials will be installed into the garden. The Diprotodont is a visual wonder, although children will be able to climb and explore it also. Diprotodonts (Australia’s largest megafauna often likened to a giant kombi van sized wombat) roamed throughout the Dandenong Ranges 15,000 years ago. The Diprotodont will be launched at SelbyFest on Saturday 4 December, and is the first of its kind in Australia.

We have redeveloped the gardens, enhancing the rock beds, adding plants to the garden area and seating. The amphitheater stairs were reinstalled with large mud rocks, enhancing the space visually.

We have been developing our artist’s exhibition program for Artspace Selby, which we plan to continue building and developing the artist community. We look forward to welcoming the community the many exhibitions in 2022.

The mental health of our community is at the forefront of what we do. A few weeks ago, we started a community social media campaign, asking how the community were feeling, and if they would appreciate a care package in the mail. We received some feedback that some members of the community were struggling and would greatly appreciate it.

Selby Community House 251578 This week we have delivered over 100 care packages to the local community, full of wellbeing messages, a voucher to go towards a Selby Community House workshop or class, activities for kids, information around services available, items promoting local businesses such as free coffee, locally made natural soaps and candles made with natural oils to provide

relaxation, and few extra treats of chocolate and tea.

We received so many messages of thanks, it was just what they needed, that it brought some sunshine to their day, they miss their family at Selby Community House and can’t wait to return.

Next term we have a wonderful program of

health and wellbeing classes ranging in Pilates, Yoga, Qigong, and Stretch and Strengthen. For our creative arts we have organised naturethemed activities; building Kokedama moss balls and botanical arts classes, as well as the Aussie Knitting for War-Affected Kids sessions for the community to get involved in. We have workshops in cooking and fermenting.

Our next public forum is Building and Renovating a Net-Zero House on a Budget. We also have a great selection of pre-accredited training for iPads and templates for beginners and intermediate and flexible computers.

Our childcare facilities are open four days a week; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and playgroup sessions are run on Thursdays.

Next year we have an important and meaningful project we will embark on. We were successful in the grant application through Public Records Office of Victoria Digital Storytelling grant program. With this funding, we will create a documentary which encapsulates the beginnings of the community house movement. As you may or may not know, Selby Community House was one of the first in Australia, it was a revolutionary time where a community movement which started the sector, which happened during the Whitlam government. They stood up, demanding services to be established and support and establishing networks of community groups, some of which still exist today. A major movement was women returning to work and the opportunity for childcare provided by community houses, made a huge impact of this. The film will capture these incredible points in history.

We hope you can all join us for the film debut in 2022 at Cameo Cinema in Belgrave. We will provide more information of when this will be next year.

COMMUNITY COURSE GUIDE

House stays connected Cockatoo Community House aims to be inclusive and welcoming of everyone. Opportunities to connect are also sought when the house can’t be open. In response, some classes have moved online during lockdown. Residents, who are not currently studying, can join free, pre-accredited art or creative kindness card making classes. These are currently happening online on Mondays and will return to face to face when restrictions allow.

For the Love of Dance and For the Love of Science are generously offering free weekly science and dance activities for children online. Two children’s fun science workshops were offered in person during the last school holidays. They were so popular that several extra classes had to be added. Feedback from parents highlighted how much fun the children had and that activities like this are really needed.

Success in applying for Community Wellbeing grants offered by Cardinia Shire Council, means planning is underway for exciting new projects. One of these is a garden and grow playgroup which will run on Monday mornings at Alma Treloar Reserve. Those registering their interest will be updated about the start date. They will also receive some seeds and information on how to start growing plants at home now. A new program of fitness and wellbeing activities for marginalised youth is also being developed.

New pre-accredited 20 hour training courses ‘Run your own business’ and ‘Build Your Own Website Using WIX’ will be offered soon.

Either course costs just $50 and interest can be registered for zoom/in person and day/evening options.

Cockatoo Community House can also help people receiving regular pension, Jobseeker, Abstudy or Austudy payments apply for the

COMMUNITY COURSE GUIDE

Build social connections Mountain District Learning Centre (MDLC) is located in Ferntree Gully Village at the foot of the Dandenong Ranges, and offers a wide variety of activities for people in the community.

The Centre’s social support group activities are part of the Victorian Government Home and Community Care (HACC) program and include computers for seniors, gentle exercise for over 65s, mixed media art, and nature inspired craft.

There is something on offer for everyone Monday to Friday! In addition to the social support groups, the Hi-Rise Community Garden welcomes people of all ages to wander in, visit the chickens and admire an ever changing seasonal offerings such as various types of fruits, vegetables and flowers. The community garden welcomes volunteers and is open on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The MDLC Social Friendship Group was established in 2014 as a response to an increase in local social isolation. The Friendship Group is inclusive and welcomes people from all walks of life. The group was nominated for and awarded the prestigious Robyn Murray Award for Social Inclusion. The group meets every Wednesday between 1-3pm and a different activity is on each week, so whether you enjoy a fun activity, or are just happy to make new friends and enjoy a cuppa and chat, the option is yours. There is no joining fee, just a gold coin donation. Afternoon tea is provided.

The Mountain Treasures Craft Group was established in 1974, and was the founding basis of our Centre. The group meets every Wednesday morning at the Centre and enjoys working on projects to sell at local markets and festivals, or to simply create in the company of friends. All are welcome. There is no joining fee, just a gold coin donation each week for morning tea.

Such a blooming shame

By Mikayla van Loon The Tesselaar Tulip Festival has been a feature of springtime in the hills for over 60 years and draws people from all over Melbourne.

Unfortunately for the second time in the festival’s history, the four week event had to be cancelled.

Festival director and grandson of the original Tesselaar tulip growers Paul Tesselaar said it would have been the festival’s sixty eighth year running.

Although the tulip festival was cancelled last year due to Covid-19, Mr Tesselaar said having to cancel this year was even more disappointing.

“So this year, we did some modeling and felt that we would be okay to get through and open up for people to come and visit. So we put a lot of effort into the layout, did a lot of ongoing repairs and maintenance to ensure that everything was up to speed and looking great,” he said.

“Then once we had our lockdown number six, we realised that this delta variant was going to interrupt the festival this year. So it was really disappointing because the entire team has put massive effort into ensuring that the show this year was going to look spectacular.”

Tulips need to be planted each year for the bulbs to go through their life cycle and improve the quality of flowering year on year, so Mr Tesselaar said there was no option but to plant the tulips in May and hope for the best.

The Tesselaar team also put in a great amount of effort to restore three of the replica

windmills, plant more blossom trees and grow greener grass to help contrast the colour of the tulips.

But Mr Tesselaar said the flow-on-effect of the festival not going ahead is even more devastating.

The festival usually brings together food vendors, market stalls and performers, as well as 120,000 people.

“I feel so much for all those small businesses that are suffering as a result of not being able to generate an income at all over the last two years from doing their food stalls at festivals.

“When I speak to local businesses down the road because there’s just not been that 120,000 people that would be coming through the hills to buy petrol or buy a coffee on the way or buy a fresh bunch of flowers from the roadside stalls, it just flows on and on and on.”

Still wanting to share the blossoming beauty and delight of the tulips, Mr Tesselaar said they have been posting regularly to social media to keep smiles on faces but he cannot wait to have people back next year for KaBloom in March.

“It really is about sharing that love of the colour and the entertainment and giving people the ability, especially this time around to escape Melbourne and to enjoy each other’s company out in nature, together with their families, wandering the fields and just enjoying the sun on their back and seeing the smiles on their faces as they wander around the field of flowers.”

Tuning into farmers

Healesville florist Rebecca Noble producers a podcast about flower farmers to inspire and provide insights into their vital roles for the industry.

The podcast is also building awareness around the importance of buying locally grown and learning about the products florists and consumers are buying.

“I don’t think that we will ever not have imports in Australia because we need some of them, we can’t grow certain types, like orchids,” Rebecca said.

“But it’s great if people choose locally grown over imported if they can and if you’re buying locally grown, the chances are that

you’re not getting the huge amount of chemicals that you would had you purchased imported roses for example.

“And there’s a huge trend towards the dried and bleached flowers, which I think is probably worse. They’re incredibly bad for the environment; they will never break down and enter the ground again.

“They have so many chemicals on them, and they are also wiping out farmers because florists aren’t looking for local fresh flowers, they’re looking for dried bleached imported flowers.”

CHAOS has been awarded a grant of $10,000 as part of Australia Post’s 2021 Community Grants Program for its work to improve mental health and wellbeing in Upper Ferntree Gully.

The grant will fund their Living Our Best Life project, a social prescribing program that connects isolated older people to community activities that support their mental health. The project will pair participants with a volunteer community connector to help find suitable community activities and support them to sustain their participation.

CHAOS is one of 76 community organisations across the country to receive a 2021 Australia Post Community Grant of up to $10,000.

For the second consecutive year, the grants program reinforces Australia Post’s commitment to mental health by funding projects that help improve connection and mental wellbeing in local communities. Australia Post also supports mental health through its partnership with Beyond Blue.

Australia Post Head of Community Nicky Tracey said she was delighted to support projects making a real difference to health and wellbeing, with recipients based in every state and territory and half of the projects in regional and remote communities.

“This has been another challenging year for many Australians, and we know that when we connect with others, we feel better, which is why the Community Grants program is so important – helping communities build better connections and mental wellbeing,” she said.

Flowers are a custom so many enjoy for special occasions, decorating the home or in the garden, but now bloom lovers have the opportunity to listen in and learn about life as a flower farmer.

A Healesville florist is sharing the stories of Australian flower farmers through a dedicated podcast called ‘Dish the Dirt’.

Rebecca Noble set off to create the series to grow greater connections between florists and farmers after noticing freelancers she worked with were unaware of Victoria’s vast array of farmers.

“It’s an amazing industry with so many amazing growers, we’ve heard from people up and coming and a huge trend towards women who have had career changes and now are turning towards flowering and that is pretty awesome,” Rebecca said.

Since it began in March last year, more than 45 episodes have been released with each episode a profiling a different producer who’s sharing their triumphs and challenges and how they got into the industry.

Now in its fifth season, Rebecca has seen the interest for their stories blossom with over three thousand listeners each episode.

Many Yarra Ranges farmers have featured on the podcast, including this week’s episode with Monvale Flowers.

Farmer and wholesaler Meaghan Harding said she’s noticed a stronger connection within the industry since the podcast began.

“I myself have made a lot of friends by conversing with people over the podcasts and how much we’ve enjoyed it. It’s created a little mini community,” Meaghan said.

While those listening are invited to learn about the daily hard work that goes behind producing strong stems.

Free TAFE expands The State Government’s Free TAFE initiative will grow to more than 60 courses in 2022 as the state moves through and beyond the coronavirus pandemic.

Member for Monbulk James Merlino MP today announced Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, Certificate IV in Leisure and Health, Certificate III in Information Technology, Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations, Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety, and a Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership will be added to the Free TAFE list at Box Hill Institute - Lilydale Lakeside Campus next year.

“The expansion of Free TAFE at Box Hill Institute - Lilydale Lakeside Campus is great news for jobseekers in the Dandenong Ranges, there has never been a better time to get training for a great job in one of Victoria’s most in demand industries,” MP James Merlino said.

It is among seven new courses for next year, headlined by the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, giving jobseekers access to training and boosting the veterinary industry by alleviating workforce demands in metropolitan and regional Victoria.

The new additions are part of a regular review of the Free TAFE list, ensuring training meets key government priority areas and skills demands while also boosting the Victorian economy.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney said free TAFE aims to get Victorians into rewarding and in demand jobs.

“We heard the calls for veterinary nursing to be added to the Free TAFE list – and we listened,” Minister Gayle Tierney said.

Veterinary studies will now be part of the Free TAFE initiative from next year.

Other new courses include the Certificate IV in Outdoor Leadership, supporting the recreational and tourism industry, and the Certificate IV in Leisure and Health, funneling more experts into the health and aged care system.

The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety will also join the free courses, as well as the Certificate III in Information Technology, Certificate III in Supply Chain Operations and Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

The Labor Government’s Free TAFE program began in 2019 to remove barriers to training by allowing eligible students to apply for fully subsidised courses that directly lead to jobs now and into the future. Some 93,000 students have started courses, saving $150 million in the first two years.

To help slow the spread of coronavirus in school settings, the Government is investing more than $190 million in initiatives ready to implemented in schools across Victoria to ensure that once they’re back open, they stay open.

The Chief Health Officer also announced that vaccinations will be a requirement of work for staff in schools and early childhood settings to protect children, staff and the broader community.

In order to work, all staff in schools and early childhood services will be required to have a first dose by 18 October or have a booking within one week, with full vaccination required by 29 November unless a medical exemption applies – including in government and non-government schools and all types of early childhood and care settings.

From the start of Term 4, 51,000 air purification devices will be rolled out to all government and low-fee non government schools to remove potentially infectious particles – like coronavirus – from higherrisk areas in schools including staff rooms, sick bays, music rooms and other high traffic areas.

“I know Victorian families can’t wait to see their kids back in the classroom – but we need to keep them safe once they’re there, and we’re delivering ventilation devices to prevent as much transmission on school sites as possible,” Education Minister James Merlino said.

“With a roadmap in place to get all students back to school safely, we’ll make sure every single Victorian child is supported when they’re back in the classroom – whether that’s with their schoolwork or their wellbeing.”

In addition, these 2,149 schools will all be entitled to a grant of up to $25,000 to purchase shade sails – with $60 million to

The Dees gave ‘em hell!

By Nick Creely As 57 years of anguish and despair washed away from die hard Melbourne fans in the midst of one of the greatest patches of football ever played, the noise reverberating around the city, and around the country would have been deafening.

But there may have been no place more deafening than up in the hills at Coldstream on Saturday night as the club exorcised their Demons to soar to premiership glory.

One of the town’s favourite sons is now a premiership hero, with Bayley Fritsch inking his name in football folklore with a bag of six goals as his Demons became champions of the AFL, in a performance that will never be forgotten in Coldy or anyone associated with the famous red and blue.

It’s safe to say that when the sharpshooting star returns home, the beers will be on the house as he recounts every second of his famous display.

The Demons triumphed in Perth against the Western Bulldogs on Saturday, overcoming a 57-year curse to clinch an unforgettable and emotional bit of silverware.

The Dees burst out of the blocks to lead by 21 points at quarter time, combining ferocious intensity at the contest with an incurable desire to run and gun the footy.

But the Doggies - well-drilled and oiled for the big stage - bit back through skipper Marcus Bontempelli to wrestle back the lead with a scintillating second term to slam on six goals.

It was then that the local boy stood tall as the Dogs threatened to run away with the premiership in the third term, with Fritsch slamming on two quick goals to get the fire started, with two brilliant individual pieces of play that set the tone for an inspired comeback.

It loomed as a classic grand final finish.

One with twists and turns, and everytime you looked away something seemingly shifted the momentum and energy of the contest.

But what occurred was almost inconceivable.

Ask any Melbourne fan for the past six decades - who would have been overcome by jitters of the past - whether it was all some big dream.

There was no way they could have envisioned what would happen next.

The Demons would go on to play one of the greatest 15 minutes ever seen, slamming on six goals to finish the third term and ice the game then and there.

It was breathtaking football led by Norm Smith medal winner Christian Petracca, with the midfielders completely dominating proceedings and turning each touch into one irresistible bit of gold.

As the premiership loomed brightly for long-suffering Melbourne fans, the players didn’t let them down in the final term, racing out to a 74-point win in 30 minutes of football that will be replayed for weeks, if not months and years on repeat.

57 years is a long time in football history - it’s last grand final victory prior to Saturday night being a four-point epic against Collingwood back in 1964 when the club was coached by the legendary Norm Smith and captained by the iconic Ron Barrassi.

It’s been a long time between the 12th and 13th premierships - but it was worth the wait.

Fritsch finished second in the Norm Smith Medal, booting 6.2 from 13 disposals, providing a menacing presence to kick the most goals in a grand final since Darren Jarman’s six in 1997 for Adelaide.

He was sublime in the air, mercurial at ground level and simply made things happen whenever he touched the ball.

His 2021 season yielded 59 goals - a brilliant effort in just his fourth season of AFL football.

If he wasn’t already a star of the competition, he is now.

“It’s crazy - surreal, I can’t really put it into words,” Fritsch told Melbourne Media postmatch.

“We did it, a lot of hard work’s gone into it we had a mission from day one of pre-season, and for that to come true is unbelievable.” mailcommunity.com.au

“I got pretty lucky, I got on the end of a few cheeky ones early - it sort of went on from there,” he said.

“To play a small part in what was an unbelievable performance is pretty special, and something I’ll look back on for sure.”

Fritsch said he was proud of the team’s resolve to fightback from a difficult position in the third term.

“We sort of took the pedal off a bit in that second quarter, and we wanted to come out and have our best defensive quarter in that third quarter, so we knew our offence would come off the back of that,” he said.

“That’s what happened, and it was nice to pile on the goals which was nice.”

He added that the bond created by the group drove them to premiership glory.

“We’re really close - we’ve got great chemistry, and we’ll keep building moving forward,” he said.

“It’s a great group, a great team to be a part of, and I’m rapt we’ve done this for our supporters.

“To go down in history books to end that drought is special - how good.”

Queensland Fruit Fly can travel to the Yarra Valley hidden inside infested fruit. Don’t bring fruit into the region from fruit fly areas. Eat it or cook it first.

Use traps in your garden to detect Queensland Fruit Fly early. Report any suspect flies.

QFF are 8mm long. They have yellow shoulder pads & two yellow stripes on their back.

Harvest ALL the fruit in your garden & pick up any fallen fruit. Protect fruit with insect netting if QFF are in your area.

Fruit Flies breed at sunset when it is 15 C or warmer in your garden. It can be warmer inside the tree canopy.

Fruit fly traps can target either male QFF or female QFF. It’s good to use both types of trap in your garden.

Fruit fly traps need fresh lures installed inside them about every three months—check the label.

Spring is a good time to start. Check traps weekly and record results.

Report suspect flies or fruit to the Yarra Valley QFF Co-ordinator. Help is available in the Yarra Valley. Notify your neighbours too.

Harvest all citrus in Spring and pick up fallen fruit.
