Good Samaritans quick. Credit needs to go to the boys who all tried to help.

“But when the screaming happened, I just tried to do the right thing.”

By linking arms with the boys on the shore, Ben was able to grab the woman’s hand from the boys in the water and pull her onto land.

Luckily an off-duty nurse was on hand to assist before emergency services arrived.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that paramedics attended the scene after reports a female was in the water.

She was in a stable condition and was taken 12497982-JW24-21

A Pakenham man has been the ultimate Good Samaritan, helping to save a girl struggling to swim at Cardinia Lake over the weekend.

Ben Johnson says he can’t take all the credit for the good deed though, with an off-duty nurse, a group of 12 year old boys and three other men all rushing to the aid of a woman around 4pm on Saturday 28 August.

Ben, from local company Mealeniyum Lifestyle Meals, said his walk around the quarry lake started like normal, listening to

the sounds of some young boys laughing and splashing around in the water.

But he said their laughter quickly turned to hysterical screaming.

“I thought what’s going on here,” Ben said.

“The boys were calling for help so I legged it through the bushes to get to them.”

A woman was struggling to swim further out in the water.

“Two of the boys had gone to try help her and she’s turned around and started pushing them under,” he said.

“So it went from zero to one hundred real

“It was a bizarre one,” Ben said.

“It was just a case of being in the right place at the right time.

“There was about 60 people at the lake and only three other people, plus myself and the nurse came over to help. The three African blokes were about the furthest away from anyone but they were the ones to run over to see if they could help.”

Ben would love to connect with the other Good Samaritans, particularly the young boys, to thank them for their bravery.

Land snapped up in East

By Shelby Brooks House lots in Pakenham East have been bought in record time, with a second release fast-tracked to keep up with the demand.

Averley’s first land release was a highly anticipated one following the State Government’s approval of the Pakenham East Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) earlier this year Over 500 customers had qualified for the first release which has appealed to downsizers and both young and established families, with lots snapped up within 30 minutes.

Lendlease’s latest community will be home to 1500 new dwellings and over 4000 residents on completion.

Lendlease Communities managing director Matthew Mears said he warmly welcomed the first purchasers.

“In launching Averley, we are building on the great success of our nearby Lakeside Pakenham community and helping to remedy the undersupply of housing in the Cardinia corridor,” he said.

“Our vision for Averley is to meet the needs and aspirations of homebuyers and to create a sense of belonging and connection for our newest community in the surrounds of the local, natural environment.

“For more than 60 years, Lendlease has proudly created award-winning places where

communities thrive and Averley will be no exception.”

The 113-hectare Pakenham East community will be set amongst 20 hectares of open space and parkland.

A community activity centre, primary school and wetlands are all proposed to form a part of the community.

The Pakenham East PSP covers an expansive area of 630 hectares and is bounded by the Princes Freeway to the south, Ryan Road and Deep Creek to the East and the Urban Growth Boundary to the north and east.

Long awaited hotel now on the horizon

By Gabriella Payne If you’ve driven down Racecourse Road in Pakenham recently, it would have been hard to miss the large, new structure slowly taking shape in the heart of the community.

Those mega concrete walls are the first signs of Pakenham’s newest addition, and one that’s highly needed in the area - a Mercure Hotel.

Having been a long time in the making, this 70 room hotel will be a welcome new addition to the community and one of only few accommodation venues in the shire.

While dates of completion are still in the works, the owner/ operator of the new hotel, Dale Bainbridge, said that the project was progressing nicely and more information about the hotel would be made available to the public soon.

Mr Bainbridge said that the Pakenham Mercure Hotel would be home to a sparkling new restaurant and bar that would be open to both the public and guests of the hotel.

As well as housing 70 hotel rooms, the building will also feature conference and board room facilities.

The Gazette will be keeping an eye on the project and provide more details as soon as they have been made available, but with the area continuing to grow, this hotel will no doubt be a most welcome addition to our community.

Three government schools, one non-government school, integrated community centres including kindergartens and maternal and child health, one local town centre and a local convenience centre are also planned.

The area is set to be serviced by a newly created and controversial Pakenham East station, with a two- kilometre extension of the metropolitan rail line.

In order to cater for the growing Pakenham community, the station will be built between Deep Creek and the Princes Freeway.

The creation of Pakenham East will see the gradual development of more than 7,200 homes and generate around 1,400 jobs.

Interchange on its way Major works are underway in Beaconsfield to build a full diamond interchange as a part of Stage 2 of the Monash Freeway Upgrade.

Major Road Projects Victoria has reported crews have been working throughout August to upgrade the existing inbound entry and outbound exit ramps before new outbound entry and inbound exit ramps from the Princes Freeway are completed in 2022.

The ramps were closed on Saturday 28 August so crews could safely connect the upgraded ramps to the freeway and switch traffic onto the new alignment.

So far, more than 80-Olympic swimming pools worth of soil have been used to create the diamond interchange.

The upgraded interchange will connect with O’Shea Road which is being extended to join the freeway.

Program director Ray Paterson said the new interchange would improve journeys for drivers.

“Once the interchange is completed in 2022, the new interchange will give motorists a much-improved route to and from Beaconsfield and Melbourne’s growing south east,” he said.

It’s anticipated the upgrade will reduce congestion, take pressure off Clyde Road and improve travel times.

Construction is expected to be complete in 2022.

Kindness comes in a pot

By Gabriella Payne If you’ve been feeling a bit low lately, you’re not the only one.

Ongoing lockdowns have gotten everyone feeling pretty miserable - but the team at the Pakenham East Bunnings Warehouse have been working hard to change all that, one potted flower at a time.

In a bid to brighten local residents’ spirits, the team have been giving away a free potted flower to their click and collect customers with a little poem attached - a small gesture of kindness that’s left many locals smiling.

Pakenham resident Jessica Lewis said that the Bunnings team made her day by gifting her with an unexpected potted flower when pick-

ing up her order recently.

“It was just awesome,” Ms Lewis said.

“There was a lovely gentlemen there who came out and said ‘here’s a pot of colour to make your day a bit brighter, and thanks for buying from us’.”

“It took me off guard, but it completely made my day,” she said.

“I always go to the Pakenham East store because they are so friendly, but it was just amazing to see something so nice to come from such a big company.”

Ms Lewis wasn’t the only local who was delighted to receive a colourful bloom for free.

Jacqie Giggins, another local resident, said she had simply stopped by to collect some paint to touch up her house when she was

blown away by the unexpected kind gesture.

“It was just something really, really nice and unexpected, especially from a big corporation like Bunnings,” Ms Giggins said.

“They’ve obviously done that off their own backs which is so sweet... it was something so small, but it just really made my day.”

Each potted flower comes with a small poem that reads, “we’re sorry that you can’t come in, we really miss your face, so here’s a little gift for you, please plant me in a sunny spot, and watch my colour bloom, we’ll see you on the other side, we hope it’s really soon!”

The Bunnings Pakenham East store manager, Dave Burn, said that the team had come up with this idea as a way to share some positivity

with the local community.

“The past year and a half has been a really challenging time for everyone and our team has done an amazing job to find new and innovative ways to provide the best customer experience,” Mr Burn said. “Brightening someone’s day with a small gesture like this is what our team does best and we love seeing customers enjoy such a positive experience shopping with us.”

The team at Bunnings plan on giving out more small flowers and poems to their click and collect customers for the time being.

It just goes to show that even small acts of kindness can have a big impact, and with spring just around the corner, things are looking brighter each and every day!

Climate change action

By Gabriella Payne We all know that climate change is an increasingly pressing issue around the world and in a bid to prevent its “intensifying” impacts, councillors from across Melbourne’s south east have banded together and are calling on the government to take a stance for the sake of the planet.

The South East Councils Climate Change Alliance (SECCCA), made up of nine local government areas throughout the south east, is calling on the Australian Government to support their communities and take urgent action on climate change, following on from last month’s harrowing IPCC report.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)’s recent report on climate change painted a dire picture for the world, as their assessments found that climate change is “widespread, rapid and intensifying” across the planet.

Spurred on by this report, the Councillor Advisory Group (CAG) of the SECCCA discussed the extremely serious and devastating climate events occurring in both the Northern Hemisphere and our very own backyards, which they noted are having detrimental long term and short term effects on the environment.

Councillor Michael Whelan, the chair of the CAG and deputy mayor of the Bass Coast Shire Council said that governments and communities must acknowledge that the threat of climate change is right here and right now.

“The IPCC’s recent sixth assessment report presents an absolutely frightening picture of what the future holds for us, for our children

“The impacts and costs are only going to worsen. With Australia’s land areas having increased in temperatures by 1.40C, communities are already experiencing devastating impacts resulting from these temperature increases.

“Every municipality in the south east of Melbourne has a story to tell about how in-

creasingly intense heat, bushfire, rainfall, storm surge and drought hurt their communities, particularly the vulnerable,” he said.

“Local government and the communities they represent are at the frontline of dealing with climate change impacts, but they are the least resourced to address the problems… it is past time to get serious on this issue.”

Cr Whelan said that the SECCCA was concerned by the federal government’s lack of ac-

tion on the issue and acknowledged that while the Covid-19 pandemic was at the forefront of everyone’s minds, it was important not to lose sight of the urgent climate change reforms needed.

“When it comes to human health and wellbeing, and good governance, our current response to this climate emergency falls woefully short,” he said.

“The devastating bushfires of 2019/2020 should have been met with shock and awe, however have been overshadowed by the more evident, acute threat of Covid-19.

“We must not lose focus on climate change, a chronic threat, even as we finally forge our way forward into a Covid-normal world.”

Residents throughout the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne have seen firsthand the impacts of climate change in recent years, with intense weather events like Cardinia Shire’s hills region’s recent storms one example, and the devastating bushfires that impacted communities like Bunyip in 2019/2020 another.

The SECCCA have urged the government to offer financial assistance to the nine municipalities so that local infrastructure can make the switch to renewable energy in the coming years.

“We must stop using fossil fuels and rapidly deploy renewable energy and energy efficiency,” Cr Whelan said.

“Local government needs urgent financial assistance to enable them to invest in infrastructure that will protect communities from climate impacts.”

“All levels of government must work together to accelerate this transition.”

Primary schools unite in pursuit of mass trivia

By Gabriella Payne Everybody loves a bit of trivia right?

Well it certainly seems that way in the Pakenham community, as what started as a little online trivia night within one primary school community has quickly spread throughout the local area and turned into a trivia extravaganza!

Each Wednesday night at about 7pm, hundreds of families from across the shire have been setting up their laptops and putting their thinking caps on to take part in a family-friendly quiz night, organised by the team at John Henry Primary School.

Brent Andrews, the head of health and physical education at JHPS is one of the driving forces behind the trivia night and said that he came up with the idea as a way of “bringing a bit of happiness to people” during these challenging times.

“So it actually began last year when we first got put into online learning,” Mr Andrews said.

“We wanted a way to still connect with all the students all together, and we thought a fun way to do that might be with a quiz.”

Mr Andrews said that it was great to see so many new faces each week for trivia, and there was always room for more!

Picture: SUPPLIED Using WebEx, Mr Andrews set up the online quiz night and students, teachers, parents and siblings from the school all quickly started showing their support for the idea.

Having proved incredibly popular within their school, word started getting out and bit by bit, more schools began to ask if they

could join in.

“We’ve gotten bigger and bigger now,” Mr Andrews said.

“We’ve started connecting with our south east schools region, so that’s been really, really good actually.”

“People can join in for a laugh and a good

time, in a semi-competitive manner too, but there’s still a bit of learning as well which is great.”

At the most recent trivia night, Mr Andrews estimated that about 12 - 13 schools from the region took part in the online quiz and he said it’s been fantastic to see so many new families taking part each week.

“It’s just a great way for people from all different schools to connect and come together,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of different principals contact our school recently about how to join in, so I guess we are locked in now! I think we will continue with it for a while, that’s for sure.”

So far, the JHPS mass trivia night has covered a range of topics including famous families, video games, children’s books, geography, food and cartoons to name a few - and they are always brainstorming new ideas!

To get involved, Mr Andrews told families to visit the John Henry Primary School Facebook page, where a link to the online quiz is posted each Wednesday - and new families are always welcome.

The library may be closed, but that doesn’t mean Children’s Book Week was cancelled.

Casey Cardinia Libraries got into the spirit with a number of fun online activities for readers.

Sarah Litchfield, team leader at Doveton Library, was among those getting into the spirit of the occasion by dressing up as Cruella de Vil. Passionate about children’s literature, Ms Litchfield said parents should begin reading to their children as early as possible to help with their language and literacy development.

“It’s a beautiful way of bonding with a child as well,” she said.

She said reading doesn’t necessarily need to be books – parents can pick out food labels on trips to the supermarket for example, to inspire kids to think about the words and

what they mean.

“Just reading and talking is the most important thing you can do,” she said.

Chris Buckingham, chief executive officer of Casey Cardinia Libraries, said books could transport readers to different places.

“Books are our passport to other worlds. It is so important during these disrupted times that children are able to exercise their imaginations through reading,” he said.

“Children’s Book Week is an opportunity to celebrate reading with the young people our lives and help them navigate their way to happy spaces and places.”

Dr’s orders - get vaxxed

By Danielle Kutchel A Cranbourne medical clinic is warning people to take the threat of Covid seriously and get vaccinated.

Our Medical Home in Cranbourne is offering both AstraZeneca and Pfizer to its patients, with 300 Pfizer vaccines available each week for patients to book.

“There’s more demand for Pfizer,” explained lead doctor Mark Overton.

However the clinic is still currently busy with AstraZeneca doses, with plenty of shots of this vaccine available for both walk-ins and bookings.

Dr Overton said the clinic had been “flat out” since the latest outbreak began in Sydney and in Melbourne, when interest increased in getting vaccinated.

“Vaccination gives protection against dying, and if you haven’t been vaccinated it’s like Russian Roulette as to whether you live or die when you come into contact with Covid,” Dr Overton said.

“And it’s not just dying of Covid – there’s also long Covid, the brain fog, fatigue, aches and long-term effects on your heart, liver and lungs.”

Dr Overton said it was disappointing to see people not taking Covid-19 seriously or

spreading conspiracy theories about the virus.

“If you had a problem with the plumbing system, you’d call a plumber. If you’ve got a medical problem in a pandemic, surely you’d listen to the experts – the epidemiologists, the virologists and the medical people, rather than a Facebook post,” he said.

He recommended people stay on top of the latest health advice from the government to get the most accurate information about Covid.

Hunt continues for Eric the dalmation

A Cranbourne East family is desperately searching for their lost dog which went missing more than two weeks ago.

Eric the dalmatian was last seen at the family’s home on the afternoon of Sunday 8 August.

The family believes he was spooked by loud noises and managed to open the door to escape.

Owner Amanda Brown described him as a “gentle giant” and said the whole family is distraught.

Adding to their heartache is the close bond Eric shares with Amanda’s daughter, Emma, who has autism and tourettes.

Eric is an untrained support dog for Emma and helps calm her tics and anxiety.

Since he went missing, Amanda said Emma has struggled to eat and sleep and has disengaged from school.

“My daughter is beside herself, I’ve never

She has set up a Facebook group, Help Find Eric the Dalmatian, to galvanise public support in the search and to keep track of sightings.

There was an unconfirmed sighting of Eric around Ramlegh Park Primary School on the day he went missing, however he hasn’t been spotted since.

Amanda has turned to a pet psychic to try and find some leads on Eric, and was told he is not far away – around five to seven kilometres east to north east of the family home in Cranbourne East.

The psychic also said Eric had been sheltering on a farm with cows and horses and is scared of the noise the animals make.

He is said to be near farm machinery that is not used daily, and is scared to approach people.

According to the psychic, Eric is in a rural area without many people or roads and doesn’t know how to get home.

Amanda said she is feeling confident now that they have an area to focus the search on, and is sure that Eric is still alive.

“I think he’s just lost and can’t find a way home,” she said.

She’s been blown away by the community’s reaction to her pleas for help, with hundreds of people joining the Facebook group and pledging to look for Eric.

“It’s hard to describe how good it feels. It’s really heart-warming to think people love him as much as we do,” she said.

Eric does not bark so he won’t try to attract attention, but he does respond to his name when called.

The 11-year-old dalmatian has a distinctive diagonal line of spots that lead from the top of his head to the corner of his eye. His spots are brown.

Anyone around Cranbourne East, Clyde, Clyde North and Officer South is urged to keep an eye out for Eric and to contact Amanda on 0400 500 545 if they find him.

Clyde Road, rail, top of mind for concerned residents Casey residents want to see action taken on a Clyde rail link and a better Clyde Road.

That’s according to a recent Casey-wide survey, which showed almost all respondents support the Clyde rail link with most people in the community also calling for a better Clyde Road corridor.

Approximately 600 residents responded to the Connecting Casey survey to have their say about which key projects they would like to see funded and why.

City of Casey chair of administrators Noelene Duff thanked residents for sharing their views, which will help the council develop its Connecting Casey advocacy campaign.

“There are three key areas our community wants to see more investment in. Roads and public transport is the number one area of concern, followed by local job opportunities and health services and facilities,“ she said.

“More than 97 per cent of residents want to see the Cranbourne to Clyde rail extension and the majority (96 per cent) support railway lines and stations above the road to ease congestion.

“This much-needed rail project will serve the fast-growing areas of Clyde and Clyde North, which has tripled in population size over the past five years.”

The Clyde Road corridor, which links the Clyde, Clyde North, Cranbourne and Berwick communities via Cranbourne-Berwick Road and Clyde Road was ranked as the most urgent arterial road project to be fixed.

“More than 84 per cent of residents consider Clyde Road corridor as the most important project to advocate on. Parts of this corridor are single-lane carriage ways, which lead to growing congestion and frustration for residents every day,“ Ms Duff said.

“Arterial roads such as Cranbourne-Berwick

Road and Clyde Road are managed by the State Government. Council has identified the improvements to help residents travel more safely and effectively, including duplicating sections and improved traffic management technology.

“Council is requesting both State and Federal Governments to deliver the upgrades needed for the vital Clyde Road corridor.

“When schools and workplaces re-open, our community will again face growing delays on this corridor.”

Ms Duff said the Connecting Casey campaign will continue to engage with the community in its advocacy efforts.

“City of Casey’s Council Plan 2021-25 outlines Council’s direction to advocate to State and Federal Governments for ‘key service and infrastructure delivery,’ and via our Connecting Casey work, residents can keep track of the projects and share their support.”

Getting a jab is easy ‘AZ’

By Gabriella Payne Pharmacies throughout the Cardinia Shire are urging residents to come in and get vaccinated, as they have plenty of AstraZeneca doses ready and raring to go.

With the Pfizer vaccine eligibility opening up to people aged 16-39 recently and many state-run vaccination hubs being overwhelmed with demand, pharmacies offer the perfect solution for those who are wanting to get jabbed sooner rather than later.

Jeff Thom, the owner and operator of Priceline Pakenham said that he and his staff were “here and ready” to vaccinate as many people as possible in the coming months.

“We’re doing AstraZeneca vaccines and we have bookings available all through the day from Monday to Friday and also on Saturdays,” Mr Thom said.

“We don’t have Pfizer though, I can’t stress that strongly enough!”

Mr Thom said he agreed with the Chief Health Officer’s remarks that “the best vaccine you can get is the one you can get today”, and while he acknowledged that there had been a lot of confusion around the AZ vaccine, it was still a great option and a brilliant defence against the virus.

“If you’re holding out for Pfizer, it might be a long time before you can get it,” he said.

“We’ve got plenty of AstraZeneca, plenty of spots and plenty of people ready to go to give

the vaccines - so let’s get vaccinated and get out of lockdown.”

Sarah Duck, a pharmacist from the Cardinia Lakes Pharmacy, echoed Mr Thom’s sentiments.

“We’ve got heaps of AstraZeneca, there’s over 500 doses sitting in the fridge ready to go now,” she said.

Ms Duck said that while it had been “frustrating” that pharmacies weren’t included in the roll-out until recently, it was great to see so many people from all walks of life coming in and getting their jab.

“We’ve had lots of young people, especially in the under 30s age group, who are really keen to be vaccinated because they are still working, a lot of them in construction,” she said.

“They’re still out there liaising and interacting with people, so they’ve really stepped forward and said I don’t care what it is, I just want to be vaccinated, which is fantastic!”

Both Priceline Pakenham and Cardinia Lakes Pharmacy are offering walk-in and online bookings for AstraZeneca, and while they won’t be getting Pfizer anytime soon, they believe Moderna may be on the way in coming months.

That being said, both Mr Thom and Ms Duck urged people to come in, have a chat and think about getting the AstraZeneca vaccine, as there is plenty to go around and it’s a safe and proven defence against Covid-19.

VCE students and teachers to be vaccinated

By Shelby Brooks VCE teachers, students and exam regulators are being urged to be fully vaccinated before the start of year 12 exams in October.

On Wednesday 25 August, Education Minister James Merlino said particular concern and priority would be placed on getting year 12 students in their final months of schooling vaccinated.

He said it would give everyone “confidence and clarity” on what the rest of the school year would look like.

“Priority for us is for all final year students to have received a vaccination before they start sitting exams on 4 October,” Mr Merlino said.

“The particular message to our year 12 students, but also VCE staff and staff who are supervising the VCE exams- we also want them to be vaccinated.”

English teacher and deputy head of senior school at Beaconhills College Berwick campus Kerri Parker said she thought most year 12 students wanted to get the vaccine.

“I would be guessing here but yes- There are quite a few who have already made the move and had their first vaccine,” Ms Parker said.

“I think this is a fantastic idea. It seems that the most likely way for us to live with the virus is to be vaccinated and if that means that students in the future don’t have to experience these lockdowns, then I am all for it.

Picture: SUPPLIED “I just think it is important to get the vaccine! Given the time between doses, stating ‘before exams begin’ gives an imperative to get onto it now.

“If distancing exam desks and wearing masks offers the protection we have been led to believe, then really, ‘before exams begin’ are words to incite action.”

She said teachers had expressed support for being vaccinated as well.

“Those whom I have spoken with entirely agree and in fact, teachers have been calling out to the government for this for some time,” Ms Parker said.

“Social distancing in a classroom with 20 plus students is a non-sense and prior to the vaccine rollout, the risks to teachers and students was raised quite vehemently.

“The landscape, however, is improving and ultimately, I think getting vaccinated is crucial, whether that can be done before exams or not.”

Ms Parker said the class of 2021 had faced enormous challenges with the uncertainty of when lockdowns would end.

“When there are clear end dates, you can prepare for that by developing a routine and settle into it but the not knowing makes that very hard to do,” Ms Parker said.

“We are also talking about teenagers who are expected to just know how to negotiate this space. I think as adults we can forget that because we are also trying to do the same!

“Having said all of that, there are certainly many students who have confronted this situation with genuine resilience and fortitude which is incredible, actually.”

Ms Parker said although the year 12 students had experienced lockdowns while undertaking year 11, it was still a struggle to go through it again this year.

“They are better equipped in regards to how it all unfolds and are aware perhaps of what did and didn’t work for them last year, however, you cannot replace the benefits of face-to-face not just with the school day routine that ensures a structure, but social net-

works with friends and the support and guidance from teachers,” Ms Parker said.

“Whilst the latter is available to students, always, regardless of the circumstances, the remote distance can never replace human presence.”

She said the lack of face-to-face contact was a challenge for the teachers as well.

“You don’t get into this game of teaching to not build and nurture connections with your students,” she said.

“Remote learning becomes focused on content and the organic nature of teaching and the richness of discussion are really impacted.

“I have certainly learned that one of the most powerful tools for learning is human interaction combined with content.”

From Monday 30 August, school based assessments can take place on campus in small groups, if they can’t be done online.

The General Assessment Test (GAT) is confirmed for 9 September after being postponed twice already this year.

Consideration will also be available for all students this year who have been negatively impacted Covid-19.

“We also confirmed the consideration of educational disadvantage, that is every single year 12 student the impact of the pandemic will be taken into account for them as individual students,” Mr Merlino said.

“It worked last year and it will work again.”

Gurdwara gets behind the Covid immunisation effort Gurudwara Siri Guru Nanak Darbar (SGND), the Officer Sikh Temple, is encouraging its community to get vaccinated and stay safe.

On Saturday 28 August, the Gurudwara held an online discussion event to better capture the status of vaccinations against Covid-19 in south east Melbourne.

The successful webinar followed an e-inauguration of the temple’s new carpark two weeks ago.

Avtar Singh organised the online event using Zoom and simultaneously streamed it live on Facebook.

Over 75 families from the Indian and Sikh communities attended.

The keynote speaker was La Trobe MP Jason Wood, Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs.

Also present during the online event were Dr Sukanya Muraledaran, a GP based in Wheeler’s Hill.

Dr Muraledaran presented an overview of the vaccination process and the efficacy of the currently available vaccines.

She also stressed the importance of getting vaccinated for a safe return to normal life.

Participants discussed motivation and hesitancy to vaccinate, fake news, and becoming role models. Most participants agreed that there was a dire need to demystify various types of fake news going around in the digital

age where information is being shared without assessing the authenticity of information.

Other participants suggested the need for us to become role models to encourage those sitting on the fence.

Community leaders such as Sunny Duggal, Nayana Bhandari, Gurinder Kaur, Brijal Parikh and many others expressed their views and appreciated SGND’s initiative to organise this community forum.

Harpreet Singh, spokesperson for SGND, thanked all who attended the meeting and also provided information about the role Siri Guru Nanak Darbar was playing in the current pandemic, including providing food relief, translating updated information and providing support to make a vaccination appointment including transportation to vaccination centres.

Get riding, fight cancer

By Danielle Kutchel A Pakenham family is urging others to join them on a cycling challenge to raise funds to fight childhood cancer.

The Meshram family – Aanchal, Mayur and their children Mayush and Aura – are currently training for the Great Cycle Challenge, which runs throughout October.

Little Aura is pedalling hard to make sure she can complete the challenge without her training wheels, and Mayush is excited to ride as far as he can as part of the fundraiser.

The family has set themselves a goal of riding 1000km over October – and they’re welcoming others to join their team and help them meet that goal.

Aanchal – a founding member of the Indian Australian Community Cooperative which operates across Casey and Cardinia – said she previously completed the ride in 2020 when she wanted to do something to activate the community and aid mental wellbeing.

Together with her husband and a team of around 10 other people, they raised around $3000 for childhood cancer.

This year, when she registered again, sixyear-old Aura and eight-year-old Mayush begged to be involved too.

Aanchal said the funds raised this year would go to an excellent cause.

“Although I haven’t had any personal experience, there are so many horrifying stories in the community [of childhood cancer],” she said.

“It’s touching to see how small initiatives can impact the community.”

She added that being physically active helps mental wellbeing – a priority during lockdown.

The ride is giving them something to look forward to, and training is getting those endorphins flowing.

They’re aiming to raise $1000 for the cause this year.

Money poured in from across the country - $628,000 in fact, in just five days.

Jaswinder Singh, secretary of Sikh Volunteers Australia, said “each and every single penny” will go towards fulfilling the organisation’s dream of a new, purpose-built site in Cranbourne West.

Construction is expected to start later this year or early next year.

The facility will allow the volunteers to increase their food production approximately nine-fold – from around 1500 meals a day to 10,000.

It was the initiative that dished up smiles during lockdown, but now a decrepit looking Spoonville site in Pakenham is providing anything but joy.

During the one hour exercise limit - which is now a distant memory - Spoonville sites across Cardinia Shire were the most popular place to visit.

Despite the fad having died down entirely, the Cardinia Lakes community was understandably upset at news their local site appeared to have been targeted by cruel vandals.

Estate resident Laksika noticed the destroyed site during her daily walk on Sunday 24 January.

“I think someone has just walked over it or kicked them all over. It’s very sad to see it. We always used to stop there and have a look for new ones,” she wrote on Facebook.

The reaction from her neighbours was similar.

“Absolutely disgusting. The highlight of our walk is our toddler stopping to look and admire the spoons,” one local woman said.

“That’s so disappointing. My kids had spoons in there,” another woman added.

Pakenham Hills Ward councillor Jack Kowarzik said the news was “really frustrating”.

“Spoonville was created by locals for the enjoyment of local children and to see it vandalised is disappointing,” he said.

Cardinia Art Society president Jillian Ronald described Spoonville as an “amazing initiative” during Melbourne’s lengthy lockdown.

“It’s given joy and positivity in some very dark times and I just think it’s really disappointing that, when the community put together a project to support each other during a difficult time, that someone would take the trouble to destroy it. They’d be better off going home to create a spoon and putting it with

“I’d suggest there’s much better things they could do with their time.”

The ‘Spoonville’ trend was born out of Winnersh, England, in an attempt to improve mental health by simply making people happy as they were out and about during daily exercise.

The quirky saga soon made its way to Cardinia - after Australia’s first ever site was constructed up the highway in Longwarry.

Within weeks, the site had spread to Pakenham, Officer, Garfield, Nar Nar Goon, Emerald and Beaconsfield.

Ms Ronald acknowledged the Spoonville craze had now hit a dead end.

“They’re getting a little bit tired, so maybe it’s time for the spoons to come home,” she said.

Ms Ronald, who commissioned the two local sites at Lakeside in Pakenham, encouraged community members to collect their spoons from their local sites.

She added that in mid-February she’d look to clean up all remaining Spoonville’s and relocate any leftover spoons to an “undisclosed location”.

The once popular Spoonville trend appears to have hit a dead end.

It’s been a long time in the making, but local business adviser and Gazette columnist Ian Ash has published his first ever book, and it’s certainly been worth the wait.

An all encompassing guide on how to make the most of a small business, ‘From Passion to Profit’ is a captivating read that helps business owners realise their full potential and ultimately, achieve success.

Having spent the past seven to eight years pouring his wealth of business experience and knowledge into the book, Mr Ash said that he was thrilled to now share it with the world.

“I’m delighted with the way it’s turned out,” Mr Ash said.

“Personally, I don’t think there’s another book quite like it, because I don’t focus on just one single area of business... it’s not about sales, it’s not about marketing, it’s not about finance, it’s not about strategy - it’s really intended to be like your own personal business adviser in your pocket.”

Being the head of his own recruitment business and having worked as a business coach for many years, Mr Ash said he was inspired to write this book after coming across many common problems with clients.

Niche brew keeps it real These days when you walk into a bottle shop, there can be hundreds of different craft beers on the shelves. Many of our neighborhood bottleshops now have multiple fridges dedicated to craft beer. If you are a beer drinker, or perhaps like to peruse the shelves at your local, no doubt you’ve asked yourself, what are all these beers and where on earth have they come from?! Well, it really has happened quite quickly, and at a rate only outdone by billionaires going to space! In fact, when we released our first beer back in 2014, there were fewer than 300 breweries in all of Australia. Now, only seven years later there are almost 800! Then, if you consider that each of those breweries is almost definitely making more than one type of beer (sorry VB!) … that’s a lot of beer!

So how do we, Exit Brewing, a tiny outfit based in Melbourne’s southeast with a team of just four, carve our niche and do it differently than all of those other breweries you ask? Well, we try and keep it simple. Great quality, consistent, honest and real; really delicious that is. Brewer boss Grum is ex-IT (ahhhh!) and has a very numeric mind, so he has created quite a reputation for his beer recipes. After living abroad for many years and sampling everything Europe and America had to offer, Grum has focused on creating beers that echo the traditional classics, but that are suitable for the Australian palate. Booth’s Paralympic dream

By David Nagel Emma Booth is certainly no stranger to overcoming adversity and the former Berwick local has continued that admirable quality at her second Paralympic Games in Tokyo.

Booth - competing in Para-Equestrian Dressage - finished in eighth place in the Grade III Individual Test with a score of 70.059, overcoming an early error to earn qualification for the eight-strong Individual Freestyle Test.

Booth and her steed, Zidane, became the first athlete-equine pairing to represent Australia at two Paralympics after they first took on the biggest stage in world sport in Rio in 2016.

In Rio, Booth and Zidane finished fifth in the Individual Grade II Test and she was a member of the Australian team that finished ninth in the Team Competition.

The 30-year-old, who now lives in Langwarrin, became a paraplegic and suffered multiple injuries after a car accident in April 2013, where a truck jack-knifed and hit her car head

on as her and a friend returned from a horse event in Albury.

A severe knock to the head caused a brain bleed, while she also suffered a punctured lung, fractured clavicle, fractured sternum, compound fracture to her left ankle and lifethreatening abdominal injuries.

But Booth showed great determination to make an emotional return to the saddle, and soon paired up with Zidane to make her Paralympic dreams come true.

Booth was relieved after her first ride in Tokyo, telling channel seven that she was proud of representing Australia in the Paralympic Games. She was also proud of Zidane, after the pair faced an early hiccup.

“It was really good, I’m just really happy to be here and representing my country on the world stage for a second time,” Booth said.

“I think the performance tonight was really good, there were a few bits where we could have gained a few extra points here and there but overall, I’m just super happy that he (Zi-

dane) stayed with me, he looked after me.

“The weather conditions here, it’s pretty humid, he was super, so I’m stoked, really happy.”

Booth then explained just how much time and effort went in to facing the judging panel for the first Paralympics in five years.

“With any sport there’s so much that goes on behind the scenes to get one athlete here, and I’ve said it before, that I’m the one riding in the arena but there’s a whole team of people that have got me to this point,” she said.

“And with horses there’s just a whole other layer of things that need to be done in order to get them here.

“I don’t think a lot of people really realise just how much actually goes into, not only getting here, but then keeping the horse sound, getting them on that stage and actually being able to do our thing…. there’s a lot.”

Booth became emotional when explaining the impact that Zidane has had on her life since the pair were first introduced on the Mornington Peninsula.

“Zidane has taken me on a journey that is beyond words, he’s really changed my life, and he’ll retire after this,” Booth said, before wiping away her tears.

“So again, this was just so good to be able to do what I love with him…for the last time.

“He’s an amazing horse and one that is going to be very difficult to replace, so it’s going to be an emotional journey from here on here out.”

Booth said Zidane had definitely helped her with the healing process.

“Absolutely, after my accident in 2013 he really gave my life purpose and meaning and he’s done for me what I think no other person or people could have done,” she said.

“Him and my family and friends at home, and everybody that has supported us on the journey, it’s just been amazing.

“It’s just a really big relief to have actually done it and it’s been five years in the making, and that in itself has added a whole other layer to Zidane’s journey and getting him here.”

Star News Group interviewed Bergman - a beaming runner with plenty of scope for improvement - in May this year, where he spoke about his desire to make it to the AFL level, and how he’s used Covid as a way to improve not only his fitness, but his game.

“During games I just try and run as much as possible and be loud, then try and use it when I’ve got it,” he said.

“During the Covid lockdown (in 2020) I was running maybe three to four times a week.

“5km, 10km, then sometimes a short 1km run to just tick the legs over every now and then.

“Now that training is back, I run once or twice a week. I am preparing for the harder stages if I am able and lucky enough to get there.

“I have gone and watched North Melbourne train, I am a mad North Melbourne supporter, I have seen how hard they work at training, I have tried to get that into my own scenario.

“Keep fit and work hard, it is never going to get easier the higher you go.”

The 2021 NAB AFL Draft Combines - with the Victorian combine to be held on 9 and/ or 10 October in Melbourne - will assess each player’s physical strengths through several tests including 20-metre sprint, agility tests and vertical jump.

By David Nagel Born and bred Bunyip boy Tom Papley experienced the exhilarating highs and devastating lows of an AFL football career last week.

Papley, now in his sixth season with the Sydney Swans, earned his first All-Australian selection, named in the forward pocket alongside Carlton full-forward Harry McKay and GWS Giants superstar Toby Greene.

Papley, who as a 16-year-old was a member of Bunyip’s 2012 premiership-winning senior side against Garfield, kicked 43 goals this year, his highest since joining the Swans in 2016.

He told Fox Sports his All-Australian selec-

tion was something he was extremely proud of.

“It’s a huge honour, and obviously I couldn’t do it without the boys kicking it to me, but yeah it’s a huge honour,” Papley said.

Papley has a proud connection with the Sydney Swans/South Melbourne Football Club, with his grandfather Max winning the club best and fairest award in 1966.

Max also won the Swans’ leading goal-kicker award in 1964, a feat Tom has achieved twice in 2019 and 2020.

“I’ve got that one over Max, which is good, he’s got a best and fairest but I’ve got an AllAustralian, but hopefully a bit of team success

this year would be good.”

Unfortunately that wasn’t to be the case for the Swans this year after they were eliminated

by Greene and his GWS Giants in a one-point thriller at Launceston on Saturday.

The Bunyip connection didn’t end there for Papley on Saturday, with the livewire forward having several run ins on the weekend with another former Bunyip player in Shane Mumford.

The Giants’ ruckman, who won the Bulldogs 2006 best and fairest award, had Papley in his sights on several occasions during the match.

Papley has now played 122 games for the Swans and kicked 189 goals.

Livewire Weightman the talk of the town

But one thing is for certain about Western Bulldogs livewire Cody Weightman - he’s a young man well and truly built for the big stage.

The Beaconsfield boy absolutely lit up the AFL Finals on Sunday afternoon, kicking four goals in his finals debut against Essendon, who couldn’t overcome the Dogs to go down by 49 points in the elimination final.

Weightman kicked two of his four goals in the game-breaking third term, proving the match winner with some ice-cool kicking for goal, but his six free kicks for the match draw the ire of opposition supports and observers, with all of these goals from free-kicks.

His coach, Luke Beveridge was however full of praise for the young star, playing just his 17th match of AFL football.

“He was brilliant, Cody. In the air and on the ground. And he obviously kicked straight,“ Beveridge said post-match.

“He’s come on in leaps and bounds this year, Flea. I’m rapt for him. To see what he did today, in such a big game.

“He’s such a great young fella, and a very talented young player. He’s so important for the way we do things.”

A focus on better shooting and handling skills for Victorian junior basketball players has led Basketball Victoria to introduce size 5 basketballs for its Under-12 competitions.

Following months of in-depth research and a recommendation paper from its High-Performance Head Coaches, Basketball Victoria is excited to implement the change starting in September 2021.

This change is in the players’ best interest as the smaller ball helps improve shooting skills at an earlier age. The size 5 ball will allow under-12 players to develop correct techniques with an appropriately sized ball before transitioning to larger basketballs in older age groups.

In-game performances, training sessions, external case studies, and a number of interviews formed the basis of a recommendation paper, which was approved by the board of BV in July.

The smaller basketball will be introduced to the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) for the 2021/2022 season as well as Junior Country Basketball League (CBL), Country Championships, Metropolitan and Country Jamborees, as well as Skills Days and other High Performance related programs from January 2022.

Players will continue to use a size 6 basketball - under-14 boys/under-14 girls and older – and size-7 balls in under-16 boys and older in Basketball Victoria competitions.

“We want to enable Victorian players to develop exceptional shooting skills so they can take their talents to the highest level across Australia and the world,” General Manager – High Performance and Pathway Grant Wallace said.

“A size 5 basketball for under-12 competitions will enable players to hone their technique and become better shooters throughout the rest of their time in basketball.

“We also believe the policy will enhance enjoyment of the game and in turn allow for better player retention.

“Adopting the size 5 basketball will improve our sport across the board and make Victorians even better at higher levels of competition throughout their careers.

“I’d like to congratulate Basketball Victoria’s High Performance coaches – Zoe Carr, Ash Arnott, Jenni Screen and Nathan Cooper-Brown – for completing this ground-breaking paper and helping propel Victorian basketball to even greater heights.”

The recommendation paper cites several case studies overseas that show a positive correlation in both performance and enjoyment with appropriately sized equipment including the International Journal of Sport Science and Coaching (2019).
