Climate risks Southern Downs Regional Council’s new environmental sustainability strategy acknowledges the region is at risk of “becoming drier with decreased rainfall over winter and spring, more days over 40C and an earlier and more severe fire season” yet stubbornly refuses to use the phrase “climate change” anywhere in the almost 20 page strategy and action plan. The new strategy and action plan, accepted by council at the 28 July meeting, makes repeated reference to “changing climatic conditions” instead of using the phrase “climate change” and mentions but does not provide steps for achieving “affordable and clean energy” and “climate action”. Locked-in loss Motels in the Southern Downs are being hit hard by the Covid-19 lockdown, with empty rooms in sight for the foreseeable future. The Apple and Grape Motel in Stanthorpe confirmed they’ve had a fair few cancellation calls. “People have to cancel because a lot of our customers come out of Brisbane,“ said a staff member. The Palaszczuk Government will be providing $5000 payments to small and medium businesses across Queensland affected by lockdowns. Full story - page 4

to attend, and glammed up for the occasion. See the photos from the night on page 10

Failure to connect says they’ve also had a lot of trouble with NBN. Luckily, the medical centre has a mobile phone for work use and they’ve been able to circulate that number to patients. “I’ve done everything I could to improve the connection and improve my service and now I’m paying the price for doing the right thing,” he said.

At Em’s Cafe, the landline isn’t working and hasn’t worked for about three months. They’ve been told the problem won’t be fixed until the end of September, and are using their personal phone number for the time being. The owner says “I put off putting my mobile number for a while, it was a last resort”. At Hair of Distinction, they had trouble ap-

plying for NBN in the first place. They had to go the ombudsman to get them to disconnect the phone after it became too much of a hassle. Since then, they’ve been hit with a phone bill of over $1000, and the owner says “the sooner I get rid of the landline the better”. Full report - page 3

Stanthorpe businesses are up in arms and relying on their mobile phones after their landlines stopped working when the copper line in the area was switched over to NBN. Leanne at Masquerade Hair Studio was without incoming calls for over a month in total. “It does affect your business.” Jan, the owner of Stanthorpe Medical Centre,
