Carpark concern

By Taylah Eastwell Upwey residents feel they have been left in the dark about an elaborate plan to turn half the local school oval into car parking.

Residents neighbouring the school grounds received a notice three weeks ago informing them VicTrack would be building a carpark halfway across the oval space as an “overflow” parking area while a new 640-space multideck is constructed at nearby Belgrave station.

Upwey resident Celina Korcak is concerned about losing what she describes as a “community space“ and says there has been a concerning lack of community consultation.

“There hasn’t been any consultation, it’s just happening and no one knows about it,” she said.

“At the moment people use it to walk their dogs and play, so it has been a shared space for a very long time,” Ms Korcak said.

“On a Sunday afternoon, it’s where people meet and let their dogs off and exercise, and this is going to change that whole aspect.

Ms Korcak said the notice from Yarra Ranges Council only gave residents until 21 July to give feedback, however council is still taking submissions.

According to planning documents, the temporary carpark is estimated to cost $2,060,000 and will occupy the eastern half of the Upwey High School oval near Upwey Recreation Reserve oval.

A report by the engineering and construction consultant, GHD, states that the objective of the project is to “construct infrastructure to be used temporarily by commuters during construction of the replacement carpark at Belgrave, while constructing new infrastructure for the Upwey Schools, including foot-

The site is said to be managed by the Department of Education.

“In conjunction with the temporary works, the project is also to allow for the hardstand areas to remain as a permanent feature for

later use by the Upwey Schools and the existing ovals are to be replaced with one larger, upgraded oval,” the GHD document states.

Ms Korcak said at the moment, the view of the oval from her home is as an inviting green space.

“When we view out the window it’s just a

green space at the moment, and a lot of other residents would see that as well. This wasn’t a concept when we brought the property, I know it will be good for the sporting club but I’m not sure what it means for the future,” Ms Korcak said.

Don a true community man

Monbulk nursery pioneer and community man Don Fleming lost his battle with cancer last week. equipped fire stations in Victoria at the time.

Graham said his dad was elected as Monbulk Fire Brigade captain during the 1962 fires, and when the Ash Wednesday flames hit the hills he was first on scene in Cockatoo trying to control the burn.

“The fire siren would go off and he would go, any time, day or night. It was a 24-hour a day, seven day a week commitment of his for a very long time,” Graham said.

With the Fleming surname a household name among the community, Don and his wife reached out to their networks and organised relief for Cockatoo locals after Ash Wednesday – rounding up dona-

The wider Monbulk community is mourning the loss of much-loved community man and nursery pioneer, Don Fleming.

Mr Fleming, born 8 May 1935, sadly passed away on Thursday 22 July 2021 after a short battle with cancer. He passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.

The well-known businessman and his wife, Dawn, took over Flemings Nurseries from Don’s father, Eric, in the 1980s and were quick to establish a name for themselves as leaders in the nursery industry.

The pair brought a professional edge to the business, growing only the very best of stock and supporting plant breeders rights which was instrumental in paving the way for the rest of the Australian horticulture industry.

Don’s son Graham said his father was “very passionate” about the family business while he was in it, having only taken a step back from his working life about 10 years ago.

“It was just his life, he didn’t have anything else. Apart from a few hobbies at the local CFA and sport, there was nothing else,” Graham Fleming said.

Although Don decided to “take it easy” later in life, he stayed living on the Monbulk farm and was a “constant visitor” to the workshop to see if everyone was still doing it right, son Graham says.

To this day, the family nursery remains the biggest deciduous tree nursery in Australia, supplying garden centres all over.

Business aside, Don Fleming was an avid community man, having captained the Monbulk Fire Brigade for over 20 years.

With the help of a hardworking committee, Don and wife Dawn are widely known for their work in establishing one of the best

“They knew everyone in Monbulk and everyone knew them,” Graham said.

For years, the Fleming family hosted an extravagant annual bonfire to raise money for the local brigade.

It all began in 1968 when brigade members and their families were invited to join the Flemings to celebrate Guy Fawkes Day. The family would ignite a large pile of trees left over after the lifting season and large crowds were entertained by firework displays, food stalls and archaic-style games.

From the small get-together, the idea of raising money for the CFA was born and a yearly fundraising event came to fruition.

Cars lined up bumper to bumper along Macclesfield Road well before starting time, with the Flemings opting to turn one of their paddocks into a makeshift car park to allow everyone to come along. The yearly bonfire grew to be an incredible fundraising event, raising over $120,000 for the brigade.

Don Fleming was also a competitive sportsman, heavily involved in the local footy and cricket club as coach, player and captain.

He coached the junior cricket teams and played in the seniors for many years at Monbulk Cricket Club and although a quiet man by nature, he was a staunch supporter of the local football club.

“Everyone loved him absolutely. He was very caring and giving to anyone who needed it,” Graham said.

Don is woven into the fabric of the Monbulk community and will be greatly missed. His memory lives on through his three children, 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family are still working out funeral arrangements given Covid-19 restrictions.

Rules test truckies

By Taylah Eastwell Throughout the pandemic, nurses and supermarket workers racing to fill empty shelves have been praised as the unsung heroes on the frontline of the coronavirus plight.

The silent heroes behind the scenes are easily overlooked, out of sight as they drive up and down highways fully loaded in order to keep the supply chain moving and shelves stacked.

While many industries shut completely, the road transport industry kept on trucking – drivers working tirelessly to keep up with unprecedented demand for groceries, masks, endless mounds of toilet paper and supplies to keep other essential industries afloat.

But with parts of the country in lockdown and new border-to-border testing regimes, the road transport industry now faces the risk of supply chain delays.

Drivers based in Victoria who travel interstate to deliver freight are now required to be tested at least once every three days and must obtain various permits to enter each state.

As authorised and essential workers, the freight industry is operating on Specified Worker (Low Workplace Interaction) Permits that allow for multiple entries into Victoria during a 14-day period, after which a new permit must be issued.

Pop-up testing sites have been set up along the main road from Melbourne to Sydney.

The sites are open from 6pm to 6am each night for drivers to pull into and take the required test. They are then free to go and informed within 24 hours of the result.

Director of interstate at Bayswater-based Cameron Group, Denis Blaney, said his drivers were required to have a test every three days if they are coming into Victoria.

“They have to keep all records to show proof that they had the test and got the clearance. It is a task that is a bit difficult because they’ve got to have a test and can do it at one of the pop up sites but if there is a queue it makes it really hard because everyone’s time is a bit short,” Mr Blaney said.

“It can make them run out of their driving hours. While the pop up sites are of benefit the risk that is associated with that is queuing and drivers being out of hours, and then they get booked or might have to stop 25km out of Yarra Glen coming into Melbourne because they’re out of time,” he said.

Mr Blaney said the time truckies spend queuing for tests is counted as driving time, with most drivers running on 12 or 14-hour time windows before being pulled off the road to comply with road laws.

“It’s not a burden, but another requirement they have to be on top of,” he said.

The owner of an interstate company in the Dandenong Ranges, who wished to remain anonymous, said the testing regime is “plagued with dumbness”.

“No one is being straightforward with the information. If you jump on the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator website it’s just a mixed jumble of words and you don’t know which way to roll with it,” he said.

Emerald speedster A 50-year-old man was caught allegedly breaking not one, not two, but three different road rules in Emerald last week and is set to pay the price for his actions.

Members of the Casey Highway Patrol spotted the man behind the wheel of a grey Nissan Navara utility allegedly doing 18km/h over the speed limit on the evening of Monday 19 July. The vehicle was travelling at an alleged speed of 78km/h on Belgrave-Gembrook Road at about 7.15pm and after police pulled the driver over, they discovered it wasn’t the only rule he was breaking.

The man was found to be unlicensed and recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.02. His car was immediately impounded for 30 days at a cost of $895 and the Ringwood East man is expected to attend court at a later date for these matters.

The trucking industry is facing supply chain delays as Covid-19 testing requirements take a toll. the same across the board. They should pick one day a week for drivers to have a Covid test and grab a permit for NSW, Victoria and Queensland. We could all understand that, but the problem is the permit system. Queensland wants a permit every 13 days, NSW you have to fill out a permit saying you’re travelling through but not in a red zone. It’s all just trying to determine what state wants what,” he said.

The trucking figure said drivers have been turned away from testing sites due to the hubs running out of testing kits.

“Every state seems to be implementing the every three day testing requirement. I don’t know how we can get drivers into places every three days. They’ve been going places and turned away because they’ve run out of testing kits so they’ve got to try and do it on the road somewhere while driving, or the testers say they’re going to have lunch and drivers are kept waiting,” he said.

“They’re only open at night-time, 6pm until 6am. They’ve got it wrong. Our drivers aren’t on the road at night. It’s got to be open 24 hours a day,” he said.

The impact of queues at testing sites is being felt further down the supply line by delaying loading and unloading times for deliveries of supplies, the figure said.

“Anything more than half an hour makes a big impact on us. All we can do is give drivers extra time to complete trips and try to get our heads around every state’s different rules.”

An owner-operator from Mt Evelyn said “the Covid side of things is killing drivers”.

“Every time I go to South Australia I have to have a Covid test. Next week I’ve got to have two tests before I even get to the border. It does impact us, but only the testing, because we are essential we seem to be getting more and more work which is a plus,” the driver said.

Mr Blaney agreed and said the design of Cameron’s business model means it “hasn’t experienced any long term interruptions” to its service despite testing and the pandemic.

“Because of the different stages of lockdowns, when we were in lockdown but Sydney

wasn’t, the volume in Sydney increased and there were significant spikes but now we are both in lockdown it’s pretty balanced and the transfer of goods between Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide has equated itself. It’s increased across the board but there isn’t a spike from one centre at the moment,” Mr Blaney explained.

The workload back at the office has also increased, with support and office staff working around the clock to keep up with ever-changing demands from various government bodies.

“We have meetings three times a week and Zoom calls that we didn’t have to do previously. We now have a whole team of people that are dedicated to monitoring government policies and procedures so we are right up to date with all of the changes and all our team are getting the communication from one voice,” Mr Blaney said.

Mr Blaney said Cameron’s were monitoring drivers mental health given the stringent rules.

“We’ve not noticed at this stage that there has been any impact on mental health and a lot of that comes from the structure of the business, we do depot to depot drops so our drivers have been in the same pattern for years.

“That means it is easy for us to work out what permits are needed and they aren’t going all over the place like some of the smaller and medium operators. The stress at the moment would come from not knowing where you might be going at the end of the week and not having a repetitive route,” Mr Blaney said.

The new rules were introduced after furniture removalists entered Victoria while positive with Covid-19, resulting in an extended snap lockdown for the state. The Victorian Transport Association said the rule-flouters were not a representation of the broader transport industry.

“The majority of freight drivers have done a magnificent job during the pandemic of keeping supply chains moving. It is most unfortunate the irresponsible actions of these individuals have brought the transport industry into some disrepute,” VTA CEO Peter Anderson said.

Croydon Police are investigating following a fatal collision in Bayswater North on Tuesday 20 July.

A car travelling east on Canterbury Road hit the rear of another car stopped at traffic lights at the intersection of Dorset Road about 2.20am. Unfortunately, the driver died at the scene. The two occupants of the stationary car received minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Train line exposure sites The Lilydale and Belgrave train lines have been added to the growing list of Covid-19 exposure sites.

An infected case is said to have travelled on the Lilydale line between Blackburn Station and Southern Cross Station on Thursday 15 July between 6.59am and 7.27am.

An infected person is also said to have travelled on the Belgrave line on 15 July.

The case travelled from Southern Cross Station to Blackburn Station between 4.45pm and 5.13pm. It is not known whether this was the same person.

The exposure is listed as Tier 2, meaning anyone on the train line during this time must urgently get tested and isolate until receiving a negative result.

Weekend’s wild weather Local SES units geared up for another spate of wild weather over the weekend, with 100km/h winds forecast for the Dandenongs for the first time since the devastating superstorm on June 9.

Emerald SES units were called out early Saturday morning to a large tree down on a car. Luckily, no one was injured.

Crews were also called out on Friday to a sinkhole behind Emerald Medical Clinic, with unit controller Ben Owen describing the hole as “the size of a basketball”.

“We went and made it safe with SES take and wheelie bins to stop patients parking there,” Ben said. “They’ll (the property owners) need to get a contractor in and rip up some of the asphalt to work out what’s caused the dirt to disappear.”

THE LOWDOWN Q&A What is something people don’t know about you?

I have an unrestricted private pilot’s licence.

What was your most memorable moment and why?

The day I passed the test to get the private pilot licence. It was one of those magical days where everything went right. The licence test involved some very tricky situations, including a demonstration of instrument flying. My tester had me doing steep turns, on instruments at only 500 ft, flying into controlled airspace, micronavigation (finding and identifying a tiny village) and, of course, doing some good landings. To my great relief, I not only passed, but the testing officer came back with me to the flying school and sat the Chief Flying Instructor down and rabbited on about the standard being Commercial Pilot standard. It was completely embarrassing and gratifying all at the same time.

What do you love most about the Yarra Ranges?

The glorious nature. The smell of the bush on a hot day, when it rains. The calm tranquility.

Space.

What event, past, present or future would you like to witness?

This probably sounds ghoulish, but I would like to know what really happened at the crucifixion of Christ and the resurrection.

There is so much controversy from so many angles about this, it’s hard to try to sort out the fact from the fiction.

Nature’s soothing quality

By Taylah Eastwell A Ferntree Gully woman passionate about boosting mental health has taken to social media in hopes of helping others find clarity through nature.

Zoe Amber Preston, 24, runs a Facebook and Instagram page called Mindful Adventures Australia, a wellbeing page focused entirely on ecopsychology and the connection between nature and mental health.

As a mental health support worker and psychology graduate, Zoe started the page last April as an outlet and way for her to inspire others using her knowledge of ecopsychology.

“I’m really into a concept called ecopsychology which basically explores connection between humans and the natural world and how nature can improve our physical and mental health,” Zoe said.

“I was trying to find a page about that and had no luck, so I decided to make my own. I just started sharing posts and it gradually turned into a page where I share tips on mental health and how you can incorporate nature into everyday life,” she said.

Zoe now hopes to educate others on the healing powers of the great outdoors.

“I do a lot of adventuring, so a lot of the posts are recaps of my adventures and the lessons I’ve learnt through hiking, camping and immersing myself in the natural world,” she said.

With her Instagram account now sitting at just under 1000 follows, Zoe said the response has been “surreal”.

And with the state currently in and out of lockdowns, Zoe’s advice is to “make the most out of the two hours of exercise”.

“I know it can be really difficult, especially on rainy days, but it really does make a difference getting out amongst the community and releasing those endorphins,” she said.

“I know some people are nervous to leave the house, but I would 100 per cent recom-

It seems so simple, but opening the curtains lets natural light in and increases positivity. I’d also recommend cuddling a pet, or bird watching, because animals have been known to increase positivity,” she said.

“I personally like getting essential oils from eucalyptus and lavender plants and other nice plants in nature because sometimes the smell reminds you of nature and can help release those good hormones,” she said.

While Zoe feels privileged to live within 5km of the Dandenong Ranges National Park, she knows not everyone has that luxury, and has created a list of her favourite walks across the Yarra Ranges, Knox and outer-eastern areas in one of her posts.

“There are also a lot of parks just in the suburbs, I have been looking on council web-

sites and they have heaps of resources of parks available,” she said.

According to Zoe, the benefits of nature are endless and include getting a better nights sleep, with natural lighting great at regulating the body clock.

“Nature also reduces stress by lowering cortisol in the body, and can reduce rumination and depression and anxiety by lowering cortisol levels. When out in nature you also get increased serotonin and dopamine, which is associated with joy and pleasure,” she said.

Getting outdoors is also said to improve concentration and memory, with outdoor exercise and meditation helping to increase feelings of well-being and happiness through increasing serotonin, Zoe says.

Here’s a few things you can do in lockdown to boost mental wellbeing: Look outside at nature or bird watch.

Bring flowers or plants into your home - pick up a bunch of flowers or some indoor plants next time you’re at the supermarket.

Watching the sunset or the clouds outside.

Gardening - buy a bonsai kit or some vegetables and tend to them each day.

Head out for a walk with one friend (as allowed by the restrictions) - being around people releases oxytocin and feeling included is great for mental health.

Open the curtains - sunlight boosts positivity.

Make the most of the two hours allowed exercise.

More dirt roads across Cardina Shire set to be sealed

By Shelby Brooks More than 170 landowners living on dirt roads in Cardinia Shire are next on the list to be charged up to $7000 to seal them.

Ratepayers on Armstrong Road in Upper Beaconsfield, Station Road, Innes Road, Anzac Street and Heroes Avenue in Gembrook, Princess Avenue and Crichton Road in Emerald and Caroline Avenue, Boronia Crescent and Rouen Road in Cockatoo will be billed as part of a Special Charge Scheme, with the rest of the projects funded by the Federal Government.

The State Education Department will also be billed for a minimum of $35,000 to cover roads surrounding Gembrook Primary School, which backs onto Station Road Gembrook.

Station Road in Gembrook. 244203 The council believes due to the level of traffic generated by the school, the department should contribute five benefit units, which is based on a conservative estimate of

five times the traffic generation of a normal residential lot.

The department is not obligated to contribute.

A Department of Education spokesperson said traffic management beyond school boundaries, including the management of local roads, was a local authority issue.

“The Department has not been formally contacted by Cardinia Shire Council regarding a request to contribute to the Sealing the Hills program.”

Land owned by the Minister for Education does not incur rates and is exempt from levies and special charges for local council projects, including road projects.

Earlier this year, 89 landowners in Emerald and Cockatoo were flagged as needing to

participate in the scheme.

The roads are part of the Sealing the Hills project by Cardinia Council which aims to upgrade most of the 860km of dirt roads in the shire.

“This project as a whole will see a good portion of that sealed in the next 10 years,” Cr Springfield said.

“We have an issue with dirt and unsealed roads across our shire. We fall in this unique position as Cardina - we’re on the fringe.

“In Covid-19 we discovered we were a metro council but many of our residents do feel like we live in rural areas.”

Mayor Brett Owen said the wider community would also benefit.

“People’s lives will change as a result of sealing these roads,” he said.

Heenan highlights issue

But with the risk of the current Covid-19 situation being high and after having a spate of ill health, Cr Heenan won’t be sleeping out under the stars this year.

Every year since 2008, bar one or two, Cr Heenan has slept in a cardboard box in Melba Park in Lilydale for seven days straight during Homelessness Week to embody the experience of someone who is homeless and raise awareness around the ever increasing issue.

“After sleeping in a cardboard box for 10 years, I tell you in the last few years it has been terrible – minus two degrees. I put the plastic over the cardboard, I’ve learnt to cover the box in with a mattress bag but it’s just hard yakka to do it,” he said.

Having experienced some of the coldest nights in winter and understanding how someone who is sleeping rough may feel day in and day out, Cr Heenan said has given him great respect for people who are homeless.

“When you hear the stories and you see the people that have gone through that, it gives you a greater respect and understanding of what you’ve got to go through when you haven’t got a roof over your head,” Cr Heenan said.

“It’s because of my respect for people that haven’t got that thing in their life where they’ve got a roof over their head and have lost their way [that I do this].”

“It’s going to happen more and more in Australia, now particularly with women and women with children sleeping in cars, we have to recognise that as a society and I’ve been

SLEEPING ROUGH IN THE RANGES saying for the last couple of years, we can’t just palm it off.”

“Neal and I have been aware since 2013, 2014 that many more women were sleeping in cars.”

From previous Census data, it is known that 87 per cent of women were becoming homeless because of domestic violence and 17 per cent of homeless children, under the age of 10, were sleeping in cars.

Having experienced financial struggles himself as a teenager, Cr Heenan knows how sometimes it can be the simplest things that send someone into homelessness, whether that be divorce, health issues, rent costs or mortgages.

“I have enormous respect for anyone who has to rent, I’m well aware now that rental properties just don’t exist anymore for people who are on welfare, it’s about 0.05 per cent.”

Worried now about the effect Covid-19 will have on people, Cr Heenan said there will be a percentage of people who have lost their jobs in the last year and will be now sleeping in their cars.

“There was one night there about a year ago, Neal [Holy Fools CEO] and I knew that there were three people in Lilydale sleeping under the shop fronts.”

There could be anywhere up to 700 people who are currently homeless in the Yarra Ranges, even though many of them cannot be seen, whether that be because they are sleeping in tents in bushland or couch surfing or living in boarding houses.

“When you get to know how a homeless

person thinks and where they go and I know Mt Evelyn and Lilydale like the back of my hand, you know where they’ll always be and where they move to because for a large part they don’t want to be seen but they are there.”

Cr Heenan said even though he is not taking part in the sleepout this year, he didn’t want that to draw attention away from the cause and wants to encourage people to get involved in National Homelessness Week.

There are planned events across the Yarra Ranges, from fireside chats in Seville to a launch event in Lilydale run by Holy Fools which Cr Heenan is hoping to attend.

Little people a reminder of how many without a home

Holy Fools founder and CEO Neal Taylor will be placing 1160 little cardboard cutout people at Box Hill TAFE, each painted a different colour to represent the different types of homelessness.

Nationally each night there are 116,000 people who are experiencing homelessness and even though this visual display will be just one per cent of that, Mr Taylor said he hopes it makes people aware of the situation.

“We wanted to come up with an idea that would have impact if you looked at it and would allow you to understand a bit more about the situation of homelessness in Australia,” he said.

By colour-coding the different ways someone can be homeless, Mr Taylor said he hopes this display changes the way people view homelessness and starts conversations about what it means to be without a home.

“I think it’s going to be an amazing visual piece to look at, once it’s done it should be quite an amazing thing to see and it should hopefully drive the point home that this is one per cent and nationally we need to be doing something about this as well. I hope that this starts conversations and people wanting to know more about it.”

The display won’t be the only thing happening during Homelessness Week, Holy Fools along with other key organisations in the Yarra Ranges will be hosting a launch event and expo on Monday 2 August.

tionally of how many people haven’t got a home overnight. It’s just a visual way of demonstrating the severity of the situation.”

The idea was started two years ago when Mr Taylor asked for help from the community to cut out the little people but due to bad weather the display had to be postponed.

“So we had I don’t know how many members in the community cutting cardboard figurines out a few years ago and they’ve just been sitting, waiting for the day to come out.”

Homelessness Week is held in the first week of August each year, raising awareness around what homelessness looks like and the challenges people face. This year’s theme is ‘everybody needs a home’.

In the Yarra Ranges alone it is estimated that there are 450 people experiencing homelessness right now and of that number, 50 are rough sleepers.

But that still leaves 400 people couch surfing, living in boarding houses, supportive

The first week of August marks National Homelessness Week, which aims to put the spotlight on the impact of homelessness in Australia through national and community events.

Welfare organisation Holy Fools will be taking part in events across the Yarra Ranges to highlight the issue at a local level.

The organisation’s founder and CEO Neal Taylor has long been advocating for better options for housing and crisis accommodation across the region. He said the recent lockdown only further exacerbates the difficulties by those struggling to make ends meet and those who are already sleeping rough.

“It puts a squeeze on services and then a number of other services are unavailable for people, who wouldn’t ordinarily rely on welfare and food,” he said. “It puts a strain on welfare services and the number of people who usually access them are now finding it difficult to get to because of the five kilometre limit and

they might struggle to adhere to regulations.

“The weather we’re having at the moment is absolutely abysmal and the lockdown means that they can’t go anywhere. The services out there like Anchor and the Salvos are working incredibly hard and are doing a great job to handle what they can, but we’re dealing with the same issues in that there’s nowhere for people to go once they need housing.

“Anchor might be able to put them up in hotels, but we’re desperately short of affordable accommodation. The Yarra Ranges is one of the few areas that has few affordable crisis housing that we’re desperate for. We’re hoping it’ll change in the near future, but until we start addressing those issues, we’re going to have the same problems and more as the need gets bigger.”

Mr Taylor said local councillors as well as state and federal MPs have been invited to Holy Fools’ National Homelessness Week events to learn firsthand the struggles expe-

rienced by those sleeping rough in the Yarra Ranges. Depending on Covid-19 restrictions, Holy Fools is looking forward to hosting a ‘Fireside Chat’ event on each day throughout the week. Seville’s Branded Burgers and Bar offered up their outdoor dining area, which will see conversations about homelesness take place around a fire drum.

“Gina (Branded co-owner) generously offered to open up the restaurant to allow us to buy coffees when the store wouldn’t usually be open,” Mr Taylor said. “They take place at night and everyone’s rugged up because it’s obviously cold, but it gives that sense of peace and it’s nice to be warm by the fire.

“The idea is that the speaker might talk for a few minutes about an issue and then open up a discussion and questions from people who are there and are very interested in the topic.

‘We are bleeding’

By Taylah Eastwell Olinda and Mt Dandenong shopkeepers have had a tumultuous start to 2021, plagued by two extended “snap” lockdowns and a devastating storm resulting in lengthy mountain road closures.

Just as roads into the village townships reopened almost a month after the 9 June storms, the state entered yet another lockdown, with businesses who were gearing up to reopen instead turning the shop sign to ’closed’ once again.

This time around, the mood has shifted.

The weight of the pandemic has businesses on the brink.

Owners of Dudley’s Restaurant in Olinda and King Henry’s in Sassafras, Ross and Mary Miller, said lockdown 5.0 has them “going backwards now”.

“This time it’s starting to get a lot harder. We are still waiting on insurance money, waiting on government money, lots of different things are making it more difficult this time around,” Ross said.

After losing food and being forced to close following the superstorm, the popular Hills restaurant has had a tough few months.

Business minister Martin Pakula announced on Wednesday 21 July that 90,000 businesses would be eligible for new grants.

Eligible hospitality venues will soon receive $4200 on top of $3000 announced at the beginning of the lockdown.

“The thing is, the government support really doesn’t cover our outgoings, it pretty much just covers rent. We’ve still got wages and one of the biggest challenges is we put a lot of people on to permanent part-time and full-time roles and committed them to training programs,” Ross said.

While the pair are passionate about supporting local workers, the costs of paying staff when income isn’t being generated is taking its toll.

“The hardest thing is our casual staff. They are doing it hard emotionally,” Ross said.

The restaurant is open for take-away, which Mary and Ross said is “not paying its way, but at least it’s supporting the community”.

“During the major lockdown people had JobKeeper so they would still get takeaway, this time around everyone is pulling in the purse strings,” Mary said.

“The main thing we would like to see is some rental assistance. We keep going to our landlords but it’s embarrassing after the fourth time,” Ross said.

“The government says it is giving money to help businesses come out the other side, but that money goes to Energy Australia, our landlord, rates, insurance and all these other things we have to pay. We have to stand down

The streets of Olinda are empty as the latest lockdown hits businesses. our staff when we are not operating, and they still have rent to pay of their own. There is a few feeling down in the dumps who just want to be back working so they can be social and talk to somebody,” he said.

As for Mary and Ross, they are helping each other through.

“It’s a massive challenge and we are a big family with both our businesses and all the people we employ. It just seems like one thing after another with the storms, lockdown, roads closed, it’s quite draining,” Ross said.

Mary said King Henry’s had just been decorated with “beautiful” Christmas in July decorations when lockdown struck.

“Believe it or not it takes a lot of effort to change a menu and decorate a venue, and now of course we have missed half of July due to lockdown. The same happened last year, they keep taking Christmas off us. We are going to continue Christmas in July into August because I’m not taking it down again,” Mary said.

Mt Dandenong Tourist Road eatery, Montage Cafe, is also feeling the pinch.

Owner Remco said “every lockdown it gets progressively worse as far as trade is concerned”.

“It’s getting a bit harder to cope with it all mentally and financially, not just for us owners

but for staff as well because we have to keep them ticking over,” Remco said.

Remco said it is particularly hard for staff this time around without JobKeeper, with workers only eligible for payments if they have a certain amount of hours reduced.

“If you lose the job you’ve got you’ve got to use up what you’ve already saved before you are eligible for Centrelink, which is quite depressing,” he said.

According to Remco, the hardest part about lockdown is “everything being up in the air” and not knowing when we might be let out.

“It’s hard to plan around. We can’t be stocking up in hopes of opening on the trade we’ve got at the moment,” he said.

“Takeaway is all we have at the moment and what I’m hearing from other businesses that you wouldn’t normally associate as having takeaway is that it is getting progressively worse. Not many people get a chicken parmigiana as take away, people still think to get pizza or chinese and don’t think of us restaurants and cafes.

“We are a bit lucky because we are near IGA and people might come in and grab a coffee or a muffin, but that’s about it,” he said.

“We are bleeding, but we are trying to slow the bleed,” Remco said.

Carpark concerns From page 1 A VicTrack spokesperson said the carpark is expected to be at the site for around a year.

“The proposed parking will have 170 spaces and will be in place for approximately a year, to provide station users with a single alternative location to park while the new Belgrave Station car park is built,” the spokesperson said.

“This will help relieve pressure on the limited parking available in Belgrave for station users, local traders and residents while this important project is being delivered.

Ms Korcak said she is concerned about the future of the site.

“I’m concerned for safety, if its a 24hour carpark that is lit up anyone could be coming and going. There might be people doing burnouts in the middle of the night, they used to do that a lot in the smaller carpark there at the footy club,” she said.

“They are basically going to extend it an extra 145 spots in a residential area. It does seem an odd place,” she said.

The VicTrack spokesperson said the “upgrades will not only improve accessibility to the station but will increase the safety of passengers and the local community with new fenced pathways, CCTV cameras and lighting”.

Ms Korcak wonders whether the authorities have collected any statistics on how many people would be interested in parking at Upwey.

“People will go down to Upper Ferntree Gully. It makes more sense to improve the car park down at Upper Ferntree Gully because it is visible from Burwood Highway and the train often stops and starts there before coming up the hill. I think a lot of people who go to Belgrave will just find parking on the street rather than come down to Upwey,” she said.

“And with so many people working from home, I don’t think the demand for parking will be all that high,” Ms Korcak said.

VicTrack said investigations were carried out to determine suitable parking sites in Belgrave, however due to infrastructure and lack of open land, there was not sufficient space to accommodate the number of required parking spaces. Upwey High was considered an appropriate alternative given it is within walking distance of both Upwey and Belgrave stations.

Upwey High students will also benefit from a new school oval planned as part of the project, VicTrack confirmed.

VicTrack said it is working with the high school and primary school to ensure the impact of the proposed parking on the schools and community is kept to a minimum.

NEWS Emerald’s Sibel Kruithof has been busy during Covid-19 lockdowns photographing curious-looking fungi.

She rediscovered her childhood interest in mushrooms last year and has since become fully immersed in the fungi world and their unique properties. SHELBY BROOKS caught up with Sibel to learn more.

Foraging for fancy fungi Born and raised in Germany, Sibel was immersed in foraging practices from a young age.

“Mushrooms have been a big part of my life from the beginning,” she said.

“My mum grew up in the post-war area and she had to go to the forests before school and pick mushrooms to then deliver to customers to make money to pay for groceries for her family.

“When I grew up, my mum would strap me on her back and we’d go into the forest and pick mushrooms.”

But since moving to Australia when she was 24 and raising a family in Emerald, Sibel said she hadn’t found time to explore her passion for mushrooms until the first lockdown last year.

“It got a little bit forgotten until we went into the first lockdown in Victoria and I had a little bit of fine to go to certain areas I hadn’t been,” Sibel said.

“I saw all these mushrooms that I remembered from the time when I was a kid so we started collecting them and I got more and more into finding out more about them.”

She said a lot of the mushrooms in Europe and Australia are the same.

“There’s a lot of pine forests in Europe and a lot of monoculture and plenty of mushrooms around, the same species that we find here,” Sibel said.

“In Germany, you have mushrooms like saffron milk caps and parasols – a lot of same mushrooms as you can find here.

“Some of them have been brought over with plants, because a lot of mushrooms are mycorrhizal they live together in symbiosis so they were imported to the area or came with immigrants.”

Sibel went on to complete a mushroom cultivation course and is now growing a range of gourmet mushrooms out of her home.

“It kind of completely took over my life from then on,” Sibel said.

“I started growing different varieties, I’m still in the hobby stage at the moment but we are looking for a suitable place to actually extend it to a little mushroom farm business, Mycelium Wisdom, where we can hopefully provide mushrooms to different shops and restaurants.

“At the moment, I am still growing from a grow tent from one of my spare rooms.”

Sibel grows gourmet mushrooms for eating, as well as some medicinal ones.

“The medicinal ones usually aren’t that nice tasting,” she said.

“Reishi mushrooms are highly prized mushrooms in Chinese medicine now western medicine use a lot of those properties which are immune boosting and anti-inflammatory.”

In terms of gourmet mushrooms, Sibel grows oyster mushrooms which are easy and come in multiple varieties.

“If I can grow with the season, I don’t have to cool or heat the fruiting room,” she explained.

“It’s easier to utilise the actual temperature so I’ll grow King oyster mushrooms, lion’s mane and shiitake in cooler times and when it’s warmer, it’s better for reishi, pink and golden oyster.”

Pictures: SIBEL KRUITHOF Foraging is still something that Sibel is enjoys, though she warns a lot of time is spent learning about mushrooms before going.

“You have to be very careful when you go foraging. A lot of mushrooms might not kill you but make you really sick,” she said.

“You really have to do your research and study to know the ones you can pick.

“There’s only really one mushroom here in Australia that is really poisonous, the night cap one that gets confused with the store-bought field mushrooms “If you’re not 100 per cent certain, leave it, don’t eat it.”

Sibel said there are techniques to ascertain if a mushroom is safe to eat or not.

“When you cut a mushroom, it will stain a certain way, like a yellow stain usually means no good,” she said.

“Some mushrooms look like a field mushroom but stains yellow and that one will give you sore stomach.”

Sibel said heating a little piece of mushroom can also help identify if they are safe to eat.

“You can also tell from the smell. Heat exposure usually brings out a certain smell like

a phenolic, ink smell which means they are no good.”

Sibel has combined her love of photography with her newfound passion for mushrooms by documenting mushrooms she finds and grows.

“Photography has always been a really big part of my life,” Sibel said.

“With mushrooms it’s so much to do with the attention to detail, the magnification of certain aspects of fungi.

“The whole thing has taken me completely in. I love zooming into a mushroom or seeing certain parts and putting it into the foreground and into the spotlight, I just love doing it.”

But it did take a little while for Sibel’s three kids to come around to the idea of consuming so many mushrooms.

“My kids don’t like mushrooms that much, but mine are pretty willing to eat them now,” she said.

“I have put quite a bit of time into finding out recipes to put into meat dishes.

“Some mushrooms that taste almost like the real deal, like king oyster mushrooms are excellent to use as a meat dish.”

Sibel replaces pulled pork with pulled mushroom to make a burger that tastes like

the real thing or enchiladas are also a popular mushroom dish in her household.

“There were complaints at the beginning but they’re pretty used to it now,” she said, laughing.

But Sibel believes mushrooms can have even greater environmental benefits than just as a meat replacement.

“Mushrooms are really one of only the lifeforms that could really save this planet,” Sibel said.

“Oyster mushrooms in particular can decompose a nappy in two months instead of it being in landfill for years.

Earlier this year it was announced that the Federal Government would invest $15 million in grants to support Australian-led research into the use of magic mushrooms and other psychedelics into their use in treating mental illnesses.

Ikea also switched out Styrofoam packaging for mycelian based biodegradable packaging.

“People looking at mushrooms more and more,” Sibel said.

“Mushrooms don’t just taste good but have all these other amazing abilities.”

Council set to take back control of community assets

By Shelby Brooks Two community committees in the hills have been folded due to a lack of volunteers.

Cardinia Shire Council will take over the management of the Mountain Road Recreation Reserve and Clematis Hall after it was decided to dissolve the existing committees.

The president of the committee for the Clematis Hall was the only remaining member and wanted to resign.

Clematis Hall has been closed to the public for the last 12 months and currently has no regular hirer. mailcommunity.com.au

Therefore, the hall will remain closed to the public in the interim and the council will undertake a maintenance audit and determine the best management options going forward in consultation with the local community.

As for the Mountain Road Recreation Reserve, committee member Andrew Morris said it had been difficult to find more volunteers to take the burden off the few who were devoted.

“We’ve had enough basically,” he said.

“The council has come up with a really good plan to maintain it with input from the

user groups still so that works for everybody.”

The council has invested $26,000 to bring the oval surface back up to playing condition but has since been declared unfit for use.

It is Gembrook-Cockatoo Football Club’s secondary ground and is also used for Little Aths and junior cricket.

Mountain Road Reserve was Cardinia Council’s largest reserve (21.8 Hectares) managed by a Community Asset Committee.

Additional funds are required for the council to directly manage this reserve and have been allocated.

Gut feelings Every food has its own unique characteristic, foods are cooling, warming or neutral in thermal properties.

Eating foods that harmonise with the season will let you experience better wellbeing. I’d like to share with you a few points on how you maximise this so you can reap the benefits and feel fantastic in the wintertime.

Over the past 14 years as a clinician I have observed that many people eat too much cold and damp foods in winter time which affects their ability to experience health. These kinds of foods generate internal cold which is exacerbated by our climate which is wet, cold and humid. If your diet in winter is rich in warming foods and drink it will support the internal generation of warmth, balance and wellbeing.

Our digestion modulates immunity, energy production, brain chemistry and even the way we metabolise many medicines. When we eat in harmony with the season, these functions will be enhanced.

This will benefit the elderly, people who are immune compromised or convalescing after illness, picky eaters and those with sensitive digestion. If you’re a person who tends to internalise emotions, warming food that is easy to digest will sit better in your tummy. And if you’re a chilly type and feel the cold easily then eating a warming diet will keep you feeling more cosy.

Here’s how to begin to implement this way of eating.

Buy from your local organic farmers market or grocer. They will predominantly stock seasonal foods that will provide the right thermal temperament.

Put away the cold pressed juicer and shelve the smoothies until Spring is really here. Make protein balls instead of shakes or grate the veggies and then bake into muffins or slices. Cook porridge for breakfast with cinnamon, honey

Plague movie fit for times Major Grom: Plague Doctor is a thrilling, wellproduced but somewhat confused Russian superhero film based on the comic book series

Maverick police officer Igor Grom (Tikhon Zhiznevsky) must track down a mysterious serial killer known as the Plague Doctor.

Zhiznevsky is compelling as a stolid, determined man who slowly comes out of his shell during the investigation. The core trio is better than the sum of its parts: Igor’s friends Yulia (Lyubov Aksyonova) and Dima (Aleksandr Seteykin) are very thinly-written but work together in clever ways against the Plague Doctor.

The film has stunning cinematography shot on-location in St Petersburg, and the tense, well-choreographed action scenes have dashes of humour and a fun motif of Igor repeatedly acting out his plans in his head before executing them, which is reminiscent of the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes films.

Major Grom is an exciting, creative film on the surface, but lacks self-awareness about Igor’s Dirty Harry demeanour. While Igor is

generally likeable and has solid development in terms of accepting his new friends, it feels hypocritical of the film to validate Igor for violently working outside of the law but condemn the Plague Doctor for the same. The film also has a well-acted but derivative twist lifted from Fight Club, yet with none of the subtlety.

Major Grom: Plague Doctor is an engaging action film with outstanding production and visuals, but doesn’t do enough to distinguish hero from villain, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

Celtic artists to entertain

By Jules Vines An afternoon of fine celtic musical entertainment with traditional tunes, songs, storytelling and exquisite dancing displays will be held at the Ferntree Gully Bowling Club on Sunday 15 August starting at 2pm and local fundraising on the day will all go to a very good cause.

Delighted to be performing in the Hills and Dandenongs for one afternoon only is celtic group Reiltin Collective. The group have are very excited to be performing live again and wanted to contribute their talents to fundraising efforts for the local Dandenong Ranges Emergency Relief Service.

Comprising of four well known local Mel-

bourne artists, the collective consists of violin-mandolin virtuoso Greg Hunt, well known Melbourne singer-songwriter Cyril Moran, internationally renowned singer songwriter Maria Forde and local personality 3MDR’s broadcast presenter Jules Vines, an accomplished local pianist and vocalist.

“We really are looking forward to our music being celebrated especially given what a difficult time it has been for everyone in the music industry over the past year and a half,” said Jules Vines, spokesperson for the group.

“Even more importantly, considering the added hardship caused to local residents with the recent storm damage, it seemed fitting to lend our music to raise funds for a local cause.

We thought supporting the services sup-

porting those doing it tough at the moment seemed to be the best way to do this. Dandenong Ranges Relief Service has been providing much needed provisions, assisting local residents and basically their volunteers have been working tirelessly around the clock,“ Ms Vines said.

“We feel our music has the added ability to really provide some healing in the community, so as we all try to get back to some sense of ‘normal living’ we are grateful for the opportunity to perform again and for such a wonderful local cause.

Local dance school, The Victorian Irish Dance Academy will also perform a display and the event will be opened with a stunning performance by local artist and harpist

Elizabeth Sutherland. There will be raffles, door prizes and CDs for sale on the day and a bar and snacks will be available through the FTG bowling club bistro.

A guide to change-making for activists of all ages In Jean Hinchliffe’s Lead the Way: How to change the world from a teen activist and school striker (Pantera Press, 2021), one sentence particularly stands out: “As long as politicians don’t feel under threat of losing their seat, they will continue to ignore those they’re supposedly working for.”

Indeed, we as Australians are not afraid of creating change to make our world a better place. As Hinchliffe stresses at the beginning of her book: “At the end of the day, if you don’t take action, then who will?”

Hinchliffe correctly recognises that it is not enough for individuals to do the right thing. Instead of relying and therefore putting pressure on individuals to change their lifestyles and worldviews, systemic change is almost always necessary.

Hinchliffe began her activism at the age of 13, volunteering with the Vote YES campaign for marriage equality. She has also volunteered with organisations such as GetUp and

For those of us as individuals and community groups who want to make a change but feel powerless – and especially for those of us voting in every election but still feeling hopelessly ignored by our politicians – it is time, and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, that we learn from our young people.

Paul Turnedge, the owner of Cockatoo’s Brunch on McBride, said the community spirit had been wonderful throughout Melbourne’s lockdowns.

Cafes keeping spirits up

By Gabriella Payne Victoria’s fifth lockdown may have most people down in the dumps, but various cafe owners across Cardinia Shire’s small towns are staying positive and “rolling with the punches“ thanks to the support from their local communities.

On Friday 16 July, the first day of lockdown 5.0, we stopped in at a number of local cafes and stores to see how small business owners were coping with yet another snap lockdown – and surprisingly, most of them still had a smile on their faces despite the trying times.

At the Emerald General Food Store, head chef Richard Johnston and barista Will Grogan said that it was disappointing to have gone into lockdown once again at such short notice, but they were grateful to at least be able to operate in some capacity.

“It’s good that we can still do something, but we’ve definitely noticed a huge drop in

turnover when we’re not able to operate properly,” Mr Johnston said. “It was hard because we’d already placed our orders for the weekend – but I think all hospitality feels that, and at least we’re not like the hairdresser’s next door that can’t operate at all.

“The local support for us is fantastic, people pop in and say hello, grab a coffee.

“I think when you’re out here [in Emerald] it’s harder with 5km, because 5km in Pakenham is so different to here,” he said.

“But for us, when we went to 10km last time we noticed that it got a lot busier, but yeah, what can you do, hey?” The community spirit was clear to see in Cockatoo as well, with Paul and Elise Turnedge, the owners of local cafe Brunch on McBride saying that it was amazing to see locals coming together to support one another through the lockdown.

“We’ve got a great little sense of community

here, everyone just pitches in and helps,” Mr Turnedge said.

“You could sort of see it coming, you know, all you needed was a truck down the highway, or a removalist from Sydney,” he laughed. “So yeah, we sort of thought it was going to happen, but you just get on with it don’t you?”

“That’s what you’ve got to do, you can’t dwell on these things.

“There’s no point getting angry, it’s not going to change anything, so we just keep ourselves bobbing along and doing what we do,” he said. Stephanie Davey and her husband Justin own and run the Upper Beaconsfield General Store, and the pair said that since everyone in the area was stuck at home and consciously choosing to shop local, they had found themselves fairly busy on the first day of lockdown.

“We’re an essential service in that we have

the gas, firewood, water, the cafe, pet feeds and everything in between, so generally we’re really busy because everyone is at home locally and they’re shopping locally,” Ms Davey said.

“We sell a lot of firewood because people are at home burning their fires and if it’s a nice day, we’ll get lots of families coming by for walks, and they’ll pop in as well.

“So it’s not a bad thing, but personally for us, we are more impacted with our children being here with us at the moment,” she said.

Trying to help their three school-aged kids with remote learning while running a busy general store and cafe was a challenge in itself, Ms Davey said, and they really hoped to see schools open up again soon, as they believe that the lockdowns were taking a huge toll on kids and their learning.

A huge honour for Huber Ferntree Gully raised Justin Huber was recently inducted into Baseball Australia’s Hall of Fame.

As general manager of the Melbourne Aces, Mr Huber was inducted to honour his excellence in the sport of baseball here in Australia and abroad.

“It’s wonderful to be recognised in this way, with such a high class in Australian baseball before me, it is without doubt an incredible honour,” Huber said.

“I am genuinely thankful to be contributing to the sport I love in a new way post my playing career. I can’t wait to see our sport grow and flourish for generations to come, as those who nurtured and supported me throughout my journey have before me.”

Huber played five seasons in Major League Baseball, along with one in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. After five seasons playing for the Aces, he has served as Melbourne’s GM since 2015.

At just 18 years old, Huber signed with the New York Mets and after being traded to the Kansas City Royals in 2004, made his Major League debut with the Royals in June 2005.

The 20th Australian Major Leaguer, he played in 72 games between 2005 and 2009 with the Royals, San Diego Padres and Minnesota Twins. After a trade from Kansas City to San Diego, Huber’s first MLB home run came in April 2008 off of future MLB Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson of the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.

Following a season in Japan with the Hiroshima Carp of Nippon Professional Baseball, Huber returned home to Melbourne and joined the Melbourne Aces for the relaunch of the Australian Baseball League in the summer of 2010.

Across five seasons with the Aces, Huber

His breakout 2011/12 season helped take the Aces to the ABL Championship Series for the first time in the modern ABL. Huber retired from playing after the 2014/15 season and assumed the helm of his hometown Aces, having served as the team’s General Manager for the past two seasons.

Under his guidance, the Claxton Shield returned to Victoria in February 2020, as the Aces swept the Adelaide Giants 2-0 in the ABL Championship Series before repeating as champions in 2021, keeping the Claxton Shield in Melbourne for a second year.

At the national level, Huber represented Team Australia at the 2011 world Cup, as well as

the 2006, 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classic and three junior events from 1998-2000.

Huber grew up playing for Upwey Ferntree Gully Baseball Club and joined Preston Pirates Baseball Club after concluding his professional career overseas. He also served as the CEO of Baseball Victoria from July 2017 to June 2019, leading BV through many positive changes, from VSBL competition to the development pathway and organisation as a whole.

“I am thrilled that Justin’s contribution to our sport is being recognized in this way, he has excelled in so many ways,” said Aces Chairman Brett Ralph.

Huber, alongside West Australian Neville Pratt, were endorsed last week as the latest inductees into the Hall of Fame.

Baseball Australia’s Hall of Fame launched in 2005 in order to recognise players, officials and administrators who have achieved excellence domestically or abroad.

“Congratulations to Neville also, who I am thrilled to be honoured alongside for his giant contribution and success in our sport,” Huber added.

Campbell to follow father’s footsteps to Melbourne

By Jed Lanyon Melbourne is set to draft Eastern Ranges player Georgia Campbell at the 2021 AFLW Draft after the dual-club father-daughter prospect nominated the Demons as her preferred destination.

The All-Australian ruck/key forward was eligible to be selected as a father-daughter candidate for the Western Bulldogs and Melbourne, where her father Adrian played 30 and two games respectively.

The minimum requirement for an AFLW father-daughter qualification is one game, meaning the Demons now have first access to the highly rated AFLW talent as the club’s first ever father-daughter selection.

The indicative AFLW draft order lists the Demons’ first selection coming all the way

back in round three at pick 42, while Campbell is expected to be picked up before that number.

At 182 centimetres tall, Campbell comes with great upside as her athleticism was on display regularly throughout the NAB League Girls season allowing her to compete against taller and stronger opponents.

A season highlight was a dominant three goal, 25 hitout performance in February against the Gippsland Power, while plucking contested marks in wet conditions.

The AFLW Academy member put in an impressive 2021 season averaging 20 hitouts and kicking eight goals across nine games to earn selection in the AFLW’s Under 19 AllAustralian team.

Draft Central’s AFLW Draft preview lists Campbell’s athleticism, versatility and work

at ground level as her strengths.

“At the AFL Women’s Under 19 Championships, Campbell played the majority of her time in the clash against Vic Country in the ruck, where she was challenged more than she usually was at NAB League level in the contests, but was unmatched in her follow up work and impact around the ground,” her draft profile reads.

“She spent the second game against Western Australia playing mostly in the forward line, causing headaches by leaping high every time the ball came in her area, and bobbing up with a goal on the run in the third term to demonstrate her impressive evasiveness and one-on-one ability.”

The AFLW Draft takes place on Tuesday 27 July.

Fresh funds for netball as applications open for grants Netball clubs and associations across Australia are set to receive a much needed funding boost, with Woolworths committing up to $250,000 in Pick Fresh Play Fresh Grants for 2021.

In partnership with Netball Australia, the Woolworths grants program has supported more than 200 netball clubs with close to a million dollars in funding support over the past two years.

This year, a further 85 grants of up to $10,000 are available, with a focus on helping clubs give young players healthy and fresh nutrition at training and on match days. Applicants are encouraged to nominate how they’ll use the money to help their clubs to pick fresh; from new fridges or juicers right up to a full canteen makeover.

Former Australian Diamonds captain Liz Ellis is helping to launch the program.
