Personal learning goals St Patrick’s Primary School is a child centred school where each child works towards their personal learning goals.

All teaching staff work collaboratively to assess student achievement and use this information to help the students set academic and social goals in their future learning.

As well as this, students, teachers and parents have the opportunity to discuss these goals during both term one and mid-year Family Learning conversations.

A real scoop for chickens The strong connection between the Crest colleges in Clyde North has continued recently with the practical assistance of Hillcrest Christian College VCAL students.

The VCAL students were invited by Rivercrest Christian College to assist in the refurbishment and upgrade of its much loved chicken coop.

“The coop was in need of a crisp new look, a vibrant feel and a strong foundation. The senior Hillcrest VCAL cohort took up the challenge of refreshing the coop and making it a place for a group of chickens to call home,” said VCAL teacher Johnny Rabahi.

The 21 VCAL students worked diligently in two groups over many weeks to ensure a safe and speedy return for the homeless chickens.

“These two groups made a guarantee to the Head of Rivercrest Primary, Jonathan Shrapnel, that they would be the ones to get the job done in a timely fashion,” added Mr Rabahi.

The two groups consisted of a landscaping team and a construction team. The first worked with the aim of revivifying the encompassing area, whereas the latter focused solely on the chicken coop structure itself.

The landscaping team, led by VCAL coordinator Deborah Rebello, cleared, reordered, replanted, mulched the entire surrounding area, and beautified the garden.

The team even went as far as removing the old compost bin in order to make room for additional garden beds and a potential new and improved chicken coop for future use.

The construction crew, lead by property manager, John Majoinen and Mr Rabahi, painstakingly ensured that the existing coop was clean, fox-proof, and functional for the big move in.

On Monday 24 May an official meet and greet was organised, with the VCAL and Year 3 Rivercrest students, to welcome and introduce eight excited chickens into their new home.

“Students and staff were extremely proud to have completed this project together and are looking forward to the future prospect of building a brand-new chicken coop from scratch; to give the chickens an even better home in the long term,” said Mr Rabahi.

“We hope to involve the Rivercrest students in this project and look forward to maintaining and enhancing the connections we have already made between the campuses.”

Flourishing at St Francis At St Francis Xavier College education seeks to invite all students to rise to the challenge of becoming young men and women of conscience, competence and compassion.

Recently St Francis Xavier College students and educators were recognised for their dedication, with the Catholic Diocese of Sale Catholic Education awards.

Student Gabriella Stipkovic received the Father James Wall Bursary – Leadership Achievement Award.

This bursary recognises the achievements of Catholic secondary school students who demonstrate outstanding leadership and service to others.

The recipients each receive $4,000 from the Catholic Development Fund to assist with school fees and other expenses incurred while undertaking studies in Years 11 and 12.

St Francis Xavier College Vice Principal Timothy Newcomb received the Spirit of Catholic Education Award for Inspiring Learning, awarded for his significant contribution to student learning.

While Lindsay Sant, Religious Education Leader, received the Spirit of Catholic Education Award for Inspiring Faith, awarded for his significant contribution to the development of students’ faith lives.

As part of this roll-out, the State Government is upgrading infrastructure through a $1.68 billion co-investment with the early childhood sector to build and expand kindergarten facilities across the state.

This investment includes the delivery of a number of new kindergartens on existing school sites – as at Heritage College – to support the roll-out of the program, providing benefits through co-location of facilities and convenience for families.

Speaking on the day, Mr Maas said the opening of the upgraded early learning centre would make things more convenient for busy parents dropping off multiple children at school and kinder.

He said the upgraded space was a testament to the school’s vision.

“I am rapt, completely rapt, that the State Government has invested to allow this school’s vision to be completed.

“I congratulate the school on its vision, on making this all happen,” he said.

Little learners at Heritage College have a new space in which to learn following the opening of an upgraded and expanded early learning centre at the school.

Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas visited Heritage College on Monday 17 May to open the centre in an event hosted by principal Sonny Aiono, with staff, students and families in attendance. $500,000 in funding for this important project was provided by the Victorian Government under the Children’s Facilities Capital Program Major Grant - Early Learning Facility Upgrade grant, with Seventhday Adventist Schools (Victoria) Limited providing $289,752.

This upgrade was delivered by Kneeler Design Architects and Chippa Constructions and will increase the kindergarten’s capacity at the school with two classrooms, a reception area, office, amenities, and landscaping works.

The centre will allow local families to have more choices with long day care, outside school hours care, and vacation care services.

the significance of the place by inserting a lot between the kiln and the former clay pit, on which a development would then be undertaken that disrupts the existing visual links between the two associated parts of the heritage place,” the ruling read.

“While the former clay pit’s association with the kiln may not be readily apparent to the casual observer, that is capable of being addressed using interpretative methods that form part of a conservation management plan for the heritage place.

“In conjunction with my concerns outlined above, the proposed smaller lot, considered in conjunction with any future development on the larger lot, will diminish the prominence of the kiln.”

As reported by the Gazette in November 2018, the heritage listed kiln was destroyed during a storm, which ripped off the tin roof and metal structure surrounding the chimney.

Officer’s historical kiln has been saved after VCAT upheld the ruling Cardinia Shire Council made about the future of the site back in September 2020.

Timbertop Estate had wanted to turn the James Hicks Pottery site on the Princes Highway Officer into two subdivisions, which Cardinia Shire councillors had unanimously voted against.

The site sits within a Heritage Overlay and contains a brick kiln, chimney and clay pit dating back to the 1880s.

In September 2020, the two-lot subdivision at Cotswold Crescent in Officer was rejected unanimously by councillors.

At the time, Ranges Ward councillor Brett Owen, now Mayor, described the application

as “trying to subdivide the site by basically carving off most of the land and leaving just the kiln”.

He said it was “so disappointing this application is before us”.

“We know this is one of the last remaining historic sites in Officer and it is so important that we see this kiln saved, restored and celebrated,” Cr Owen explained.

“This applicant is further dwindling the land around it, which will in my opinion, make it almost impossible to achieve that ultimate goal of protecting, preserving and celebrating.”

In a VCAT hearing held on 14 June 2021, the tribunal upheld the refusal.

“Rather than conserving the setting and the existing fabric of the heritage place, the proposed subdivision will adversely affect

Hopeworks wish grant-ed

By Gabriella Payne For years now, the team at Hopeworks Community Solutions have been giving back to the community by helping those in need, and the amazing work that they do has now been given a boost thanks to some much needed funding, in the form of their first ever government grant.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale stopped by the not-for-profit organisation’s Pakenham warehouse on Wednesday 16 June to announce the good news that Hopeworks had been chosen as one of six grant recipients in her electorate that would receive funding from VicHealth.

The managing director of Hopeworks, Cher Spratt, said that it was “very exciting” to receive their first ever grant, which will provide the organisation with $9,500 to purchase a forklift to assist them in their work as a food relief charity.

“This grant means we will be able to work more efficiently and do more things for the community,” Ms Spratt said.

“We had a second hand forklift in the past, but it was full of batteries that ended up dying, and I think it was about $6,000 - $7,000 to replace them.

“We just didn’t have that kind of money and didn’t feel it was practical for us [to replace], so we put in an application to get the money for a new one, and now we have!” she said.

“All of a sudden after all these years of being under the radar doing our thing, the Cardinia Shire have noticed us and asked us to help with a lot more relief,” Ms Spratt said, adding that the money for a new forklift would help them immensely moving forward.

Alongside Hopeworks, the five other organisations in the Bass electorate to receive a VicHealth ‘reimagining health grant’ include the Lang Lang United Soccer Club, Wonthaggi United Soccer Club, Bass Coast Ballet School,

Nicole Lee Qigong and the Bass Coast Landcare Network.

The grants were introduced in a bid to help communities across the state reconnect and improve their health following the impacts of coronavirus and the Victorian bushfires, and hope to increase community access to healthy, affordable food, provide greater opportunities for physical activity and help locals build better social connections within their communities.

Jordan Crugnale said that it was wonderful to recognise local social enterprises like Hopeworks in this way and help support their tireless efforts to help the wider community.

“We have amazing grassroots organisations with locally led solutions that at their heart is to support and improve the health and wellbeing of our residents,” Ms Crugnale said.

“Thank you to them and to VicHealth - the breadth of projects and initiatives is so ranging and says so much about these community focused local clubs, organisations, groups.”

Since 2015, Hopeworks Community Solutions have helped train “almost 500” senior high school students and helped them transition into tertiary education and employment, while collecting donations of all kinds to help those in need.

Ms Spratt thanked Ms Crugnale for going “above and beyond” to help them, and said that on top of the VicHealth grant, the organisation had also been the lucky recipient of a $20,000 grant from the Pakenham Race Club, which would help them buy a new van to make deliveries and collect donations into the future.

By Shelby Brooks The old John Street Woolworths will become the site of the new Pakenham Community Hospital.

The block of land at 67-69 Main Street, Pakenham has been identified as the preferred site for the new multi-million-dollar facility.

Woolworths John Street permanently shut down on 29 January 2019.

Bass MP Jordan Crugnale said the hospital would allow local communities to manage their everyday health needs, closer to home.

“The preferred location is in the heart of Pakenham meaning patients, visitors and staff can easily access the services, programs and

care that this new Community Hospital will deliver.”

The Victorian Government is investing $675 million to deliver 10 community hospitals in major growth areas.

The new Pakenham Community Hospital – operated by Monash Health – will provide a range of integrated community health and specialist services.

Strong links to specialists, community health providers and social support services will improve follow-up treatment and support for those requiring complex care.

The new hospital will help take pressure off nearby hospitals including Casey Hospital – allowing them to focus on critical care and acute

health issues, emergencies and more complex surgeries and procedures.

The preferred location is within walking distance of Pakenham town centre and train station and nearby shops and services.

Land for this important facility, which is currently commercially owned, is in the process of being acquired.

Delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority, construction is expected to start in 2022 and be completed in 2024.

Ex-councillor’s back

By Shelby Brooks Two candidates have nominated in the Cardinia Shire Council, Westernport Ward byelection, due to be held next month.

David Young and Kaye Cameron will run for the council seat, made vacant by Cr Ray Brown’s passing in April.

Candidate statements and responses to a questionnaire about their background and qualifications will be available online at vec. vic.gov.au later this week.

The Cardinia Shire Council by-election will be conducted entirely by post.

Voters who were correctly enrolled for Westernport Ward by 4 pm on Friday 28 May

will receive a ballot pack, which they must complete and return as soon as possible using the reply-paid envelope provided. Ballot packs will be mailed from Tuesday 6 July.

Voters can also hand-deliver their completed ballot material to the election office located at Kooweerup Tennis Club, Cochrane Park, 243 Rossiter Road, Kooweerup on weekdays from Wednesday 16 June to Friday 23 July.

Office hours are from 9am to 5pm, with extended hours on Thursday 22 July (9am to 8pm) and Friday 23 July (9am to 6pm).

More than meets the eye

By Shelby Brooks A Pakenham Springs Primary School teacher has gone viral for being “handsome” but has a message about positivity and mental health he says is more important than looks.

Grade 5 teacher Dylan Harris’s TikTok videos went viral last week, with the Daily Mail dubbing him “Australia’s hottest teacher”, earning him a live interview with Channel 9’s Today Show.

But Mr Harris is quick to laugh off any suggestion of good looks, saying is just focussed on spreading joy.

“I just wanted to spread positivity on social media,” he said.

“The article is a very one sided way of portraying me.

“People told me I didn’t want to be TikTok famous, but I wasn’t going for fame. If I can make someone smile by me dancing or telling a joke then that can only be a good thing.”

Mr Harris, 28, started making TikTok videos just before last year’s Covid-19 lockdown as a way of spreading positive messages about the importance of mental health.

“It started as a way for me to share tips and tricks about motivation, about anxiety and depression,” he said.

“I wanted to share a different vibe to the issue. Sometimes it can be very dark when people do different talk about it but I wanted to bring a bit of joy.”

Mr Harris said he had seen family and friends affected by mental health.

The past Emerald Football Club coach said he had seen people die by suicide.

“That really cemented the view that there needs to be more positively out there,” he said.

After the success of his TikTok videos, Mr Harris began the business DELTAR Motivations as a way to help kids in schools by holding talks and focus groups.

“Maybe kids can change one aspect of their life, one they have control over,” he said.

Mr Harris said the whole experience had been a “rewarding whirlwind,” but he was focussed on his students, who he teaches two

days a week.

“I love the moment when kids get it,” he said.

“That penny drop moment you can see and hear it when they say yes I get it.

“You know that’s going to be a lifelong learning moment they will be taking to the year after and after.”

And what do the kids think about their teacher being TikTok famous?

“I’m more than happy for the kids to follow me on TikTok,” Mr Harris said.

“It’s all positive messages. I love the conversations they have because of it.

“It’s a positive side of social media for them to see.”

OPINION Pick up your masks!

I live In Cranbourne East and walk my dog twice a day.

The amount of discarded litter and dog poo has always saddened me, but since the pandemic and use of masks I am really angry at the number of masks discarded on the footpaths and in the park.

I pick up any I see, usually between three and six each day, and dispose of in a litter bin.

I feel this would be the tip of the iceberg and there must be thousands finding their way into waterways and killing native birds and animals in horrendous ways.

By Danielle Kutchel Acting Premier James Merlino has announced a major easing of Covid restrictions for Victorians as the state recorded another donut day of no new local cases.

On the advice of the Chief Health Officer, restrictions in regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne will ease from 11.59pm Thursday 24 June.

Private visitors to the home will increase from two in Melbourne, and five in regional Victoria to 15 across the entire state – and up to 50 people can gather outside in a public place like a park.

Funerals and weddings will be capped at 300 people, and hospitality venues can serve up to 300 in Melbourne, but density limits still apply.

Masks must still be worn inside except at home, and are recommended when you’re unable to keep a 1.5 metre distance.

The work from home recommendation has been removed, however, metropolitan Melbourne offices can now work to a cap of 75 per cent capacity or 30 people in a workplace, whichever is greater.

Players, parents and spectators can attend outdoor community sport within the total cap of 1000 people.

Theatres will initially open at 50 per cent

capacity, with up to 1000 people.

From this weekend crowds can attend public events and outdoor stadiums with a limit of 50 per cent, or up to 25,000 people.

Dancefloors remain closed, including at weddings.

Subject to epidemiology and the advice of the Chief Health Officer, from 11.59pm on Thursday 1 July, venues will be able to host bigger numbers.

This would mean 100 per cent capacity at theatres and 85 per cent capacity at indoor and outdoor stadiums.

Those travelling to Victoria’s alpine region are still asked to get tested prior to departing metropolitan Melbourne, especially if they’re staying overnight.

The Acting Premier urged Victorians to explore their state and shop local, but warned them to stay away from storm and flood-affected areas where roads may still be unsafe.

Visitors must check in using the Service Victoria QR code at every business they visit, with the Acting Premier describing it as “the seatbelt we need as we open up the state”.

The changed restrictions will remain in place for the duration of the school holidays.

Dog owners have been put on notice with poisonous baits laid near a popular walking trail.

A number of 1080 baits have been laid at Cardinia Creek Parklands on Inglis Road in Beaconsfield.

The baits are targeting foxes which are killing native wildlife.

Warning signs at the site explain there are baits in the area.

More recently, a warning was spray-painted on the path leading into the park – apparently by a concerned walker – calling the poison “dog bait” that “will kill”.

Parks Victoria area chief ranger Darren Mitchell said the potential impact of the baits on wildlife other than foxes was “extremely low”, but added precautions had been taken to protect them such as burying the baits and spacing them at least 500 metres apart.

People living nearby were also warned about the upcoming baiting, which began on Tuesday 6 April.

Nevertheless, a photo of the spray-painted warning, posted on Facebook, attracted a number of concerned comments from walkers and residents worried that dogs and birds might inadvertently ingest the poison.

The 1080 pesticide is extremely toxic and the RSPCA notes there was no antidote.

One local walker, who wished to remain anonymous, said they did not notice the signs in the area before entering the park and only became aware of the baits when they saw the spray-painted message.

“I am now grateful to whoever wrote it on the concrete as it was very eye catching,” they said.

“I was very hesitant to walk my dog. I had him on a lead but was anxious the whole time as he is a very curious dog by nature.”

Removing the stigma

By Gabriella Payne Incontinence is a topic that’s shrouded in embarrassment and not often brought up in conversation - but the team at the Continence Foundation of Australia are working hard to change that and have launched a new campaign to get people, especially men, talking about this common health issue.

To mark the beginning of World Continence Week on Monday 21 June and kick start these important conversations, the foundation were excited to launch their new campaign, ‘BINS4Blokes’.

‘BINS4Blokes’ is a nationwide advocacy and awareness initiative that is pushing to see incontinence product disposal bins installed in male public toilet facilities - something that could help change the lives of many men around Australia according to the foundation’s CEO, Rowan Cockerell.

Ms Cockerell explained that 1 in 10 Australian males, or 1.34 million boys and men, were currently living with either urinary or faecal incontinence and due to the lack of disposal bins in male public toilets across the country, many of these men often limited their activities in public due to fear of embarrassment.

“There is so much stigma associated with incontinence and for many people living with it, it can lead them to withdraw from public and social activities resulting in depression and a reduced quality of life,” Ms Cockerell said. “I think we take for granted having bins made available in female toilets, and no one has actually taken notice that men sometimes require these kinds of products too.

“With 1 in 10 Australian males experiencing incontinence, our BINS4Blokes initiative aims to help them feel more supported in the community and be able to confidently participate in social situations outside of the home.”

A study of Australian men with urinary incontinence found that 57 percent intentionally kept accidents secret from those close to them, and 50 percent avoided situations where they could not easily access a toilet.

However, Ms Cockerell said that the Continence Foundation of Australia hoped that this campaign would help normalise the conversation around incontinence, provide support to those experiencing the condition and let men know that there was help out there, and they weren’t alone. “Sometimes people think they’re on their own, but we want them to know that they’re not,” she said. “There is help available.

Incontinence is not part of growing old, it’s not part of ageing.”

Better public toilets are on the horizon in Cardinia Residents throughout the Cardinia Shire can expect to see better public toilet facilities across the region over the next ten years, as the council’s “public toilet strategy 2020 2030” was passed unanimously at Monday night’s council meeting.

Councillor Tammy Radford spearheaded the strategy at the meeting on Monday 21 June and said that while toilets weren’t always a hot topic, it was vital to improve our public loos throughout the growing shire as they are a “critical” piece of infrastructure for the community.

“[This strategy] Is important and it ensures that public toilets are in the right places of need, maintained to a standard that residents and visitors to the Shire expect and user friendly for all abilities,” Cr Radford said.

“In addition, the strategy provides consideration to gender neutral toilets, accommodating changing community attitudes on gender.”

Cr Radford said that 149 residents had helped provide input on what they would like to see improved when it comes to public toilet facilities, and these comments had helped directly shape the new council policy.

By Gabriella Payne What started out as one woman’s little idea to lend a helping hand to those impacted by last week’s wild weather has quickly snowballed into an amazing community relief campaign, with organisations and community members coming together from across the Cardinia Shire to help those in need.

The ‘all hands on deck’ Victorian flood relief campaign came about last week thanks to a kind-hearted Longwarry mum, Shauna Evans, who reached out to the Pakenham SES asking what she could do to help those impacted by both the floods in Gippsland and the storm damage in the hills.

“I saw how quickly things were happening and how quickly people were being impacted and I figured if I can help someone out and make their day, I suppose give them something

positive out of a negative situation, then that’s better than doing nothing,” Ms Evans said.

“People are just trying to get back up on their feet [after Covid] and they’ve been knocked back down again, and yeah it just started with a small ambition and it’s just gotten bigger and bigger and evolved, which is just amazing.”

Shayne Honey from the Pakenham SES thought Ms Evans’ idea was a brilliant one, and they quickly went to work setting up a number of food collection stations across the shire, at both the Longwarry Football Club and the Officer Football Club.

The first collection was held in Longwarry on Wednesday 16 June and another was held at the Officer Football Club on Friday 18 June, with the final collections taking place on Tuesday 22 June at both clubs before all the supplies gathered will be sent off to help those in

either flood or storm affected areas.

“One big load is going up to the Dandenong Ranges and Emerald/ Cockatoo way and the other one is going down to the Gippsland area that’s been impacted by flooding, including Traralgon, Morwell and Sale,” Ms Evans explained.

Mr Honey said that it was “great to get everyone onboard” with Ms Evans’ idea and he thanked the community for all the donations that had been collected so far.

“It’s just great that it’s come about from Shauna asking a simple question and we’ve been able to pull it all together at this end using different community connections to actually get the boxes of stuff coming in,” Mr Honey said.

“If we can get a smile on their faces or a little stress off their shoulders with all the stress that they’d be going through at the moment, then that’s better than nothing,” Ms Evans said.

Beaconhills’ new principal

By Gabriella Payne There may be some very large shoes to fill at Beaconhills College as longtime executive principal Tony Sheumack steps down from the role, but the school is excited to turn over a new leaf as they welcome current deputy headmaster Stephen McGinley to the helm.

Mr McGinley has been a part of the Beaconhills College community since 2009 and it was announced on Thursday 17 June that he had been chosen as the school’s next leader, set to succeed Mr Sheumack from the start of the 2022 school year.

The college board chair, Dr David Moseley said that after an extensive national and international search of an “exceptional field of educators”, the board chose Mr McGinley for his “outstanding capabilities” and were thrilled that he would be leading the school into the future.

“We are so pleased to have selected an executive principal of such outstanding capabilities, to continue our vision and mission to be leaders in personalised holistic education and give each student an opportunity to let their light shine and be a beacon in the lives of others,” Dr Moseley said.

“Throughout his career, Stephen McGinley has developed wonderful relationships with students, staff and the broader school communities where he has worked.

He is passionate about working in a school that is committed to providing programs that support positive student outcomes.”

In his time so far at Beaconhills College, Mr McGinley has applied the latest research and developments in education to progress student developments with a focus on academic, pastoral, co-curricular and spiritual programs.

A highly qualified candidate who previously held a number of positions at St Catherine’s School in Melbourne, Mr McGinley said it was an honour to have been chosen as Beaconhills’

He said the community would have a number of opportunities to celebrate Mr Sheumack’s achievements before he steps down.

Stephen McGinley will be stepping into the role of executive principal at Beaconhills College at the beginning of 2022.

Casey Cardinia for Refugees is marking Refugee Week with a stall at Pakenham Library.

The stall features information about the situation that refugees face in Australia.

Members of Casey Cardinia for Refugees will be on hand to explain a bit about what they do.

A spokesperson for the group, Margaret, said the aim of Refugee Week was to “highlight all of the amazing contributions that refugees make all over Australia and also to raise awareness about the issues facing refugees and the growing difficulties refugees face in finding protection in countries like Australia.”

The group has been raising awareness of these problems for four years now, with weekly vigils in the Berwick High Street and regular letter-writing to La Trobe MP – and Assistant Minister for Customs, Community Safety and Multicultural Affairs – Jason Wood.

Members of the group also regularly attend rallies for refugee rights.

Meanwhile, for the month of June Casey Cardinia Libraries is partnering with the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to collect donations of groceries and other essential products to give to around 1000 people per week, most of whom have no income or work rights.

Items needed include tuna in oil, tinned vegetables and tomatoes, coconut cream, hand sanitiser and soap.

A spokesperson for Casey Cardinia Libraries encouraged anyone who is able, to donate items at their nearest library location.

Above and below line It’s amazing how some of the simplest things can bring amazing clarity to personal performance.

In particular, there are a whole raft of simple tools and models which illustrate key concepts and form simple, practical ways of improving business and personal performance.

I love using these in my work with business leaders as they are typically very easy to remember and apply.

One such tool is something called “Above and Below the Line” and although this term has particular meanings in advertising, marketing and corporate values, I would like to talk about it in terms of our own thinking and approach to our work.

Put simply, we can all operate according to one of two belief systems: 1. ‘Below the Line’: in which things typically happen to us over which we have little or no control; or 2. ‘Above the Line’: in which we create our own destiny and can actually influence how things turn out.

People operating from a ‘Below the Line’ perspective subscribe to a ‘victim’ mentality.

They believe that stuff happens to them and that they are powerless to control their future.

They literally become victims of circumstance, unable to materially affect outcomes.

You will often hear them say things like “see, this always happen to me” and “I told you I could not do it” and there is no shortage of excuses when things don’t get done or go wrong.

And unfortunately that’s what tends to happen, things don’t get done, but it is never their responsibility. These people see problems in opportunities and their conversation is characterized by BED (Blame, Excuses and Denial).

As a result, ‘Below the Line’ thinkers are pessimistic and typically more stressed since

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS IAN ASH stress is a symptom of feeling a lack of control.

There is a better place to be, namely ‘Above the Line’. By comparison, ‘Above the Line’ thinkers recognise that although things may go wrong or not pan out as expected, there are always choices.

These people have a ‘victor’ mentality in that they know they can win and achieve. They see opportunities in problems and are typically more relaxed and optimistic knowing that they can influence outcomes.

There is an acronym for the ‘victors’ as well – OAR (Ownership, Accountability and Responsibility). This means that even when things don’t work out, they own the result, learn from it (‘Growth Mindset’) and do it better next time.

The good news is that while we may all drop into ‘Below the Line’ thinking from time to time, we don’t need to stay there – we can actually choose which of the two paradigms to operate from.

It is not always easy being ‘Above the Line’ (how many of us are ready to admit it when we stuff up?), but in the long term not only does this bring better results, it will create respect amongst others and is hence an invaluable tool for leadership.

The ‘Dads Do Matter’ program has been facilitated by Jasbir since 2015 and dads have reported positive feedback about the program and indicated positive changes within their parenting.

ParentZone facilitates parenting groups (PBS) where everyone airs their concerns and explores strategies. The six weekly program gives time for parents to try out new strategies and share how they have worked.

Aspiring young entertainers can try their hand at performing, with the centre hosting a week packed with free circus skills workshops.

Entertainer Melinda King will be teaching the tricks of the trade out the front of Woolworths, under a sparkly Arena circus tent that will double as a snazzy photo backdrop.

On Monday 5 July, kids can learn to juggle, including making their own colourful juggling balls.

On 6 July, participants will learn the impressive art of spinning plates. The final workshop on 7 July is all about balancing and performing, and attendees can even enjoy free hot popcorn to cap off the week.

The workshops are appropriate for kids of any age, and participants don’t need any prior experience in performing or gymnastics.

Younger children can be occupied with craft and colouring activities.

Children can attend one or all of the workshops if they wish.

Ms King has been running the circus workshops all over Melbourne for several years, and says it’s rewarding watching kids walk away with new skills to keep them busy throughout the holidays.

“The kids love learning something new, physically learning and being present in themselves,” she said.

“A skill to bring home and practice is a powerful thing.”

Ms Cosentino said the cooler weather has also brought a renewed interest in comfort foods bringing people together.

“Food trends at the moment are centred around warming winter foods that you can share and enjoy with family and friends. Foods like a beautiful grazing board with gourmet cheeses, our fresh pasta made with a slow cooked Italian ragu, hearty soups, or Polish

Littlefield had Prince Alby in fine form last winter, scoring two wins and four placings from six starts, and the pair look set for another strong preparation this time around.

Prince Alby put the writing on the wall with a second placing at Sale, over 2232m, last start, and went one better after jockey Ben Melham timed his run to perfection.

“He’s a horse that has no tactical speed and he comes off the bridle but he really comes into his own on these wet tracks,” Melham said after the race.

“I was following the favourite and knew we had him covered shortly after straightening, he let down well and he’s a good strong stayer at this trip.

“Once I did get him through his gears he levelled out and he quickened up quite well.

“I think when he got to the front he had a bit of a look around and sort of waited a little bit, but he’s in at the right time of year and he’s a good wet tracker, particularly at this trip.”

A new treadmill might be just the beginning of renovations to the Pakenham stables of trainer Charlotte Littlefield after the popular local prepared two winners in three days last week.

Littlefield trained Merle The Pearl to victory in the $50,000 BM70 Three-Year-Old Fillies Handicap (1600m) at Sandown on Wednesday, before Prince Alby made it a great week for the stable with a narrow victory in Friday’s $35,000 BM64 Handicap (2418m) at Geelong.

Merle The Pearl made it back-to-back victories at Sandown, pleasing Littlefield after a four-week let up after a barnstorming fivelength victory on her home track at Pakenham on May 20.

Littlefield said the three-year-old filly had always shown promise and the timing of her winning streak was impeccable.

“We’ve always had a nice opinion of her and it’s just great that she’s built gradually through the grades,” Littlefield said.

“We own 50 per cent of her, which is fantastic, and I think I’m going to thank Luke (Currie) personally because we were getting a bit dire there.

“We just purchased a tread mill because things are really taking off with the move to Pakenham, so every little bit extra really helps at the moment.”

Littlefield said the daughter of Anacheeva/ Lovely You’re Here would continue to improve when she comes back from the paddock as a four-year-old mare.

“Her owner did get quite excited after her last start and said he could see her attacking a decent race at some point in the future,” she said.

“I think if we put her in the paddock after today and bring her back as a four year old I think she’ll come back much better as an older mare, but she certainly did a really great job today.”

Gun Pakenham-trainer Phillip Stokes made it back-to-back victories for Pakenham trainers when his three-year-old gelding Bottom Line won over the 1412-metre journey at Geelong.

Bottom Line started a short $2.30 favourite and confirmed that quote with a strong win, his second from eight starts.

Jockey Ben Allen said the victory was even more meritorious than it appeared with Bottom Line not having the race run to suit.

“He’s a big horse and I really wanted to keep him one off and give him his own room but we didn’t have the luxury of that today so I had to go back to the fence and just bide our time and ride for luck,” Allen said.

“He’s a big horse and doesn’t like being crowded on the inside and coming down the hill it was quite cut up and was definitely the inferior ground. The second horse was able to come out and build into it where I just had to take the runs where I could.

“But once he got out to the better going he knuckled down and was tough.”

Stokes had a big say in proceedings at Flemington on Saturday as well with his three-yearold filly Unique Artist ($34) donkey-licking her rivals in the $135,000 Sir Henry Bolte Handicap (2000m).

Kiwi-jockey Michael Dee gave Unique Artist a dream run throughout and the pair bolted away down the famous Flemington straight to win by three lengths.

Unique Artist, who knocked many – including this punter – out of the first leg of the quaddie has now won back-to-back races after a five-length stroll at Pakenham Last start.

Pakenham’s next race meeting is set down for Monday, 28 June.

The good news is flowing

By Nick Creely The good news keeps on flowing at the Catani Cricket Club as the Cats prepare for one of the biggest seasons in the club’s history.

Off the back of unwavering momentum garnered from a massive first XI premiership in Division 2 last season, the Cats have finally been granted their wish - to be promoted to the top-flight of the Warragul and District Cricket Association.

It took a heap of hard work and dedication to bring the Cats into the top-flight, only a few years after departing the West Gippsland Cricket Association.

“It was a big undertaking, because the executive voted for us to stay in Division 2,” Catani president Brad ‘Snags’ McDonald explained.

“We appealed that - so we did a fair bit of campaigning. We rang the club presidents to get a few on our side, and we won the vote 104.

“We were worried we would lose a lot of our good players if we stayed in Division 2.”

McDonald explained that the excitement was palpable, and when the news came through that their wish was granted, it was a business-like approach - knowing exactly how much hard work was now required.

“The senior coach, Jim Vela is a young fella, and as soon as we found out, he sent a message to our group chat, and it was fairly long

winded about the real stuff starting now,” he said.

“We’ve got to train like never before, there’s no excuses for us this year - there’s no point going up and becoming a laughing stock.

“We’re really hungry (for success).”

McDonald said in promising news that the Division 2 premiership side is staying together after re-committing to the club, but hinted that the club was up to its eyeballs in a few prized recruits from neighbouring competitions as they look to build depth within the ranks and give some promising youngsters opportunities.

“We’ve got good young kids coming through - we’ve got experience and young guys so we’ll look to blend them in,” he said.

“If we recruit one or two, it’ll build depth through the grades.”

McDonald also confirmed another piece of good news for the club - that the Cats will be getting brand new, state-of-the-art nets for this season, with the old ones to be demolished.

“I can’t believe it to be honest,” he said.

“I’ve always said I was staying on as president until I got it done.

“It wouldn’t have happened without Jo Kennedy from the council, she’s managed to get us $100,000 from the council, and we’ve also got $92,000 government funded.

“It’s going to be going from one of the worst nets, to one of the best. We’re excited.”

Shooting star Sergei staring down the barrel of glory

By Tyler Lewis “It’s going to be so different, but I think these are the Olympics that are going to be remembered throughout time, and to be able to experience that – it will be incredible.”

Sergei Evglevski is about to embark on an enormous journey, his biggest to date – from Berwick to the Tokyo Olympics.

And the Olympic Pistol shooter believes it’s going to be one remembered for a long time.

It’s been a different year for the nations Olympians, Evglevski touched on the extra year of preparation, a year he feels has assisted in developing his maturity.

“It’s (the additional year) has had its ups and downs in all honesty,” he said.

“I know an upside to it is I have really matured, comparing to this time last year I have felt a lot more stable.

“Just have to live every day one day at a time and keep going forward.

“We had quite a bit of a break, it wasn’t long after selections that they announced covid and everything getting delayed.

“We lowered our intensity so we could build back up for the 2021 games,” Evglevski said.

Travelling internationally is uncommon in this current time, but it is going to be an uncommon games, where the competitors will have to undergo intense testing to maintain safety.

“I think it’s one of those situations where we have to be really cautious and really safe,” he said.

“I know we’re doing testing every day, we test 96 hours before we leave, 72 hours before we leave and then once we arrive, I think we either test as soon as we get off the pane or on the plane.

“We have to test negative every time and provide evidence that we’ve been vaccinated, it’s really serious but I think it’s the best thing

for the athletes.

“It’s probably just the safest thing they could for the athletes.”

Evglevski is born and raised in Olympic shooting royalty, with mum Lalita Yauhleuskaya competing at six games, two for Belarus in 1996 and 2000, and four for Australia in 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016.

His family have helped him in many ways along his journey, but have also prepared him for something other than competing.

“With everything in my family, with what my mum has told me, I think the dining hall is going to be one of the best things there,” he joked.

“When I went to the dining hall at the Commonwealth Games it was awesome, with these Olympics it won’t be as busy, which is fair enough.

“I think the experience with the Olympic games is all I can ask for.

“They’ve been ridiculously supportive, anything I need they’ve been there to help.

“I have always been tought to fight my

own battles, I know I have their support 24/7, but I try to do it myself because that’s what they’ve taught me.

“They’ve lived it, they always know what to say.”

Some athletes are pleased with making the Olympic squad, others aren’t satisfied with anything but a podium finish.

Evglevski, however, has his sights = set on competing at the best he can.

“I don’t have anything specific like that, but for me, with the amount of time I have put in is get there and try my hardest,” he said.

“If I get there and get bottom ten, but I tried my hardest, I’ll be happy, if I know I gave 110%, I’ll be happy.

“But if I go and say, ‘oh I have made it, I’m happy’ and half ass everything, that’s when I will be the most disappointed.

“Going in there and giving it my full effort is all I can do,” Evlgevski said.

The 2021 summer Tokyo Olympic games are set to commence July 23.

Roos hit the road running

By Nick Creely and Dave Nagel It’s not uncommon knowledge that Officer has the ability to cut sides to ribbons when the game is played on its terms.

This is even more prevalent on their Starling Road ground, which the Kangaroos have made a fortress in recent years.

That’s what makes Saturday’s win on the road all the more important for Doug Koop’s group – a gritty eight-point victory against a dangerous Seville side up the hill, 8.3 (51) to 6.7 (43).

They’re the wins that the Kangaroos simply must get if they want to be taken as a serious contender in AFL Outer East Division One. While wins at home by 186 points against Healesville and 161 against Belgrave just prior to the lockdown showcased a ruthless nature to its game, there’s no doubt Doug Koop would be feeling a sense of satisfaction that his group could get down and dirty and grind out a win.

“Finals are often close affairs and won by the team that can maintain their quality and pressure for longer,” Koop explained.

“That’s what we did on the weekend, this was a great test for some of the games we expect to play later this year.”

The Kangaroos and Blues swapped leads throughout the contest in what was a highly contested slog.

At the final change, the Kangaroos held a narrow two-point lead, and despite the Blues throwing everything at the visitors, Koop’s side held its nerve – particularly defensively – to clinch an important four points.

Ben O’Loughlin was sublime in the conditions to be best afield, and will have a sneaky chance of leading the club’s best and fairest at this stage, while Lachlan Ward and Anthony Bernardo both snagged two goals and had some big moments.

The 4-2 Roos host Monbulk in a monster clash at home this Saturday.

In Outer East Premier Division, Cranbourne just got the edge over Pakenham, 7.12 (54) to 6.6 (42) in a scrappy affair.

The lead was traded on several occasions throughout the contest, and it took until the final moments for Steve O’Brien’s group to shake off the brave Lions, who continue to impress this season.

Jake Carosella was vital with two goals for the Eagles, Dillan Bass provided plenty of drive off half-back, while Jordan Bertrand was razor sharp by foot.

Jesse Longmuir hasn’t been short on goals this year, he has done plenty of celebrating with his teammates so far. 241243 For Ash Green’s side – who will take plenty of confidence out of the clash heading into this weekend’s bout with Woori Yallock at home – Stephen Morey was absolutely sublime in a stopping role on Marc Holt, while the ever consistent Liam Tyrrell was eye-catching.

Nar Nar Goon suffered just its second defeat in the West Gippsland league this season with the Goon taught a football lesson in an 84-point defeat at the hands of InverlochKongwak.

The Sea Eagles delivered a high-octane and entertaining second-half performance that led to a 23.14 (152) to 10.8 (68) triumph.

ROC rises to the occasion

By Nick Creely and Dave Nagel ROC is beginning to move away from the pack and into premiership favouritism in AFL Outer East Division One after knocking off Seville in a top-of-the-table affair on Saturday 50-40.

The undefeated Kangaroos clawed back from a four goal deficit at half-time to register a dominant second half performance, scoring 30-16 in that period to overwhelm the Blues who were more than up for the fight.

The fightback came from a vintage performance from Keeley Burgmann, who scored 38 goals, while Maddison Chamberlain was impressive in one of her best games for the season.

For the Blues, Clare Papavs, Alexis Tucker and Olivia Ray never stopped trying all day and thoroughly deserved their place on their team’s best players list.

The win now sees the Kangaroos move a game clear of the Blues, and Emerald, who registered a staggering 92-40 win against Belgrave.

Cranbourne, meanwhile, proved too strong for Pakenham in Outer East Premier Division.

The Eagles, with Tara Cecil and Alanah Hardy in their side, are a class outfit and gradually pulled away from the Lions in the second half.

Tristan Van Driel stood out like a beacon for the winners, booting eight goals in an unlikely scenario after he missed his first shot at goal from 20-metres out.
